Surrogacy
What is the law?
From the editor SARAH BLINCO
ith the recent media coverage about baby Gammy, the ethical and legal issues surrounding surrogacy have once again been brought to light. Whilst there has been a call for the legislation regarding surrogacy to be reviewed and overhauled, the legal position continues to be that commercial surrogacy arrangements, either in Australia, or overseas, are illegal. However, parents Zoe Adams LLB (Hons) are entering into overseas commercial Cassandra Pullos Lawyers surrogacy arrangements either in despite of the law, or lacking knowledge of the law. What has received little media coverage, is that in Queensland, entering a commercial surrogacy arrangement is an illegal act. It is punishable by up to three years imprisonment. As for a child born from a commercial surrogacy arrangements overseas, often the birth mother has relinquished parental rights in the child’s country of origin. In Australia, the child is not granted citizenship or a residency visa; as the definition of “child” of an Australian citizen excludes children born from surrogacy arrangements (other than those altruistic surrogacies approved in our states or territories). As a “loophole” parents are approaching the Family Court of Australia for Orders providing them with parental responsibility and for the child or children to live with them; and consequent practicalities for the child’s day to day life in Australia will follow – including enrolment in school, Medicare cover, obtaining a passport etc. However, there can be lengthy, uncertain and complicated processes to obtain these Orders and it is important that parents consider the legal ramifications of returning to Australia with their child born from surrogacy arrangements overseas; not only for themselves but also for their child. It is crucial that any intended parents wanting to enter into a surrogacy arrangement, whether overseas or in Australia, obtain legal advice before the arrangement is made; or at the very earliest opportunity. If parents have already made arrangements without legal advice, there will be greater difficulties in obtaining parentage or parenting orders and they will need legal advice to minimise any adverse consequences; both in the Family Court and with the DPP. If you require advice or representation in relation to surrogacy, Zoe Adams, an experienced family lawyer, at Cassandra Pullos Lawyers is able to assist you and your family. Working exclusively in Family Law for more than six years, Zoe has represented clients in resolving the major concerns of property division, spousal maintenance, child support, parenting disputes, child protection and divorce, giving her the practical skills and experience to adopt the most appropriate strategy for each client’s individual circumstances. Surrogacy is complex; it involves the interaction of many different aspects of Australian domestic law and international law. Solutions require specialist knowledge, and concentration on the individual needs of the parents and the p +61 7 5526 3646 children involved. Zoe Adams and the entire team at Cassandra Pullos Lawyers focus on designing strategic pathways and deliver client’s desired outcomes in all family law matters, in the most efficient way possible.
Spring carries with it such lovely connotations, don’t you think? Baby animals, flowers, warmth and an energy that fosters growth and new beginnings. It’s interesting that new beginnings can take so many forms. In fact, Get it is undergoing a transformation right now, for indeed I write this note − my last in this space for a while − from high in the sky on board a Cathay Pacific flight bound for the sunny shores of London. Obviously I’m embellishing on that front because while I am headed to the UK I highly doubt it will be sunny. Exciting nonetheless, and fortunately the city’s intoxicating energy makes up for its drizzly days. Taking the reins here alongside our gorgeous publisher, Leanne, is the equally lovely Elizabeth Campbell, whose name you’re likely to recognise because she is well known and liked here on the GC. As you can imagine, we’ve been well into “fresh start” mode in the Get it office this past month, and we have agreed this is a most productive mindset to maintain. For our September issue, the team has compiled a number of rousing stories designed to get you moving forward on your desired path sooner. From Luke Sheedy’s five point action plan on how to make-over your world − starting now, to Caroline Marquez’s enlightening coverage on volunteering and how you will gain more than you can imagine out of swapping a little of your time for the greater good; this issue is brimming with positive ideas on how you may embrace life and change this spring. As I step away from this post, I’d like to say how proud I am of this publication and its growth which has seen it become the Gold Coast’s most popular monthly lifestyle read. I, like the rest of the team, am especially grateful to you, our readers and supporters, for your constant stream of engagement, interaction and ideas. May your month also be full of fun and promising new beginnings! If I may, I’d encourage you to draw inspiration from the late, great Robin Williams in Dead Poets Society, where through his role as teacher, John Keating, he emphasises, “Carpe diem − seize the day... make your lives extraordinary!” Pertinent, I think, and true that there’s no better time than now to seize the day − make things happen, set goals, get healthy, mend fences and let go of grudges. It’s spring, after all, and time for new beginnings.

ENTERTAINMENT with Sarah Blinco
Popular Gold Coaster, DJ Brooklyn, shares with Sarah Blinco what it’s like to be a music star in the making... How long have you been a DJ for? Two years and three months! I’m very fortunate that things have moved as quickly as they have for me. And you’re a resident at Platinum here on the GC? My first resident set at Platinum was in April supporting Uberjakd and D.O.D. It is so amazing to be able to play alongside such big names. My manager, Joey Lamattina, owns Platinum and decided to give me the opportunity to perform there when I’m not playing somewhere else across the country. Knowing that successful DJs like The Stafford Brothers and Timmy Trumpet were once residents at Platinum makes me feel extremely blessed. When did you first realise you wanted to work in the music industry? I have always wanted to be in the music and entertainment industry in one way or another. From writing song lyrics as a teen to making music video clips with my sisters using our parents’ video camera; and I even used to pretend to host my own radio shows and record them on my cassette player. How would you describe your sound? At the moment, bounce and big room. I also love to play vocal tracks; you can often
Bring the beat back catch me singing along to them in them booth! Who do you look up to? Some of the DJs/ Producers I look up to are also friends of mine and DJs I’ve played alongside like Chardy, Kronic, Joel Fletcher and Will Sparks. Some of these guys are now making a name for themselves over in the States, which is great because it is opening doors for all Aussies who want to break into the industry over there. You’ve already attracted a massive following online − how valuable is social media to the growth of your profile? Social media it is extremely important. My followers are the ones that come to my shows and support me. I love being able
September 2014
to connect with them on such a personal level. Whenever I can, I reply to comments, private messages, tweets and so on. My followers are the first to know where I’ll be playing and when I’m coming to their region. Fave gig you’ve played at over the past year? I’d have to say the gig I did in May in Penang, Malaysia. I was lucky enough to be able to play in front of over 2000 people at the H-Artisty Globe Art Of Mixing event. It was a super clubbing experience with a massive stage, dancers and amazing light show. I felt very loved and welcomed there. 10
What are you most looking forward to over the coming year? Further touring across Australia and seeing different parts of the country, and I hope to go abroad more and experience the nightlife of different cultures overseas. I also can’t wait for the Aussie festival season and the Soak Luxury Pool Parties that will be hitting the Gold Coast in summer. What advice do you have for other aspiring DJs? Put yourself out there, set up a Facebook page, Soundcloud and Instagram profiles and start promoting yourself. You never know who might be watching or listening! LOCAL PROFILE with Sarah Blinco
Local IT and business consultant, Lianne Connor, shares her extraordinary tale of life in Indonesia and how she came to write a book that has made a positive impact on countless lives How did you initially end up living in Lombok? I didn’t know much about Indonesia or how far it spread until I was based there as a pilot. In my downtime I explored the outer reaches of Indonesia. It is an amazing location that certainly expands beyond the Bali posters and media representations. I found and fell in love with Lombok. I discovered this whole new world with a unique culture, food, language and lifestyle. What did you do to pass your time? Surfing lessons in Lombok are heaven for beginners; great teachers, long slow breaking waves. During the first year I lived there, the people I surfed with would ask me to teach them English which I did over sugary coffee, steamed chili fish or a beer. During this time a new airport was opening in central Lombok and people were beginning to realise the implications of the development. While there would be more paid work available, the local people would be competing with workers from other islands like Java and Bali. I started teaching one or two but realised rather than just teaching one person I needed to establish a program or option that would result in more people learning and be self-sustaining on an ongoing basis, regardless of whether I was there or not. One of the first things I did was to help a local guy start an internet café for tourists. By helping one person I knew they in turn would provide the resources (computers, internet etc.) so locals could themselves learn to use computers and practice tasks like typing and continue to develop their English. From there I posted a message on Facebook to ask people to donate money to the project and some wonderfully generous people responded. We charged tourists for internet usage while providing local people free access and helped the locals set up things like email and Facebook. The local guy I started the business with earned enough to build his parents a house. It was so heartwarming and inspiring to know we achieved all that, with very little initial capital. What inspired you to compile your children’s book, Surfing Sam and Mr Turtle? I wrote the book two years ago on the plane on the way home to the Gold Coast. I used to find it so hard leaving Indonesia and coming back to Australia. I thought I would write something in English then translate it during my Bahasa Indonesian lessons. I would write each section and my teachers corrected it during our lessons. Indonesian language is relatively new which I believe was proclaimed September 2014
Making waves and a
difference
as the national language in around 1928. There are 300 native languages in Indonesia and many e t h n i c groups. In Lombok m a n y people only speak their indigenous language, Sasak. I wanted to be able to communicate with these people as well as them speak and learn to read their own language. The book is in three languages: Bahasa Indonesia, Sasak (local Lombok language) and English. The format allows the reader to compare the words and grammar of the three languages. Can you give us the premise behind it? The story is based on an experience when I was on a surf trip. On this day the waves were particularly large and a local surf guide’s board leash snapped and his board disappeared beneath the waves. The guide, Rudy, tried to swim to the beach but was dragged by the 12
current back into the waves over again. Exhausted he believed his time was up. For tunately another surfer saw him in distress and managed to paddle back out to drag him to safety. When everyone returned to the boat safely and we were discussing Rudy’s frightening experience, we saw a fishermen pull in a huge, old turtle. Rudy turned to us with a look of alarm and said,“My life was saved today. We have to save this turtle too, it cannot die today!” For two hours we negotiated with the fishermen to let the turtle go. Eventually they agreed to a sum and the turtle was released. The story also highlights the implications of litter and how it is disposed. These islanders have not had the education we have had regarding recycling and correct disposal of refuse. The story follows a day of Surfing Sam
and his friend Andrea, the fisherman. They are on their way to a secret spot to surf and fish when they come across a turtle that has swallowed a plastic bag. They help to rescue the turtle. Later while having a rest, the surfer eats a chocolate bar and throws the wrapper into the ocean. When Sam surfs again the ocean gets angry and creates huge rough waves. Sam almost drowns then the turtle then comes to his rescue. The turtle asks the ocean why she is angry and the ocean explains that Sam had littered the sacred ocean. Sam and Andrea learn the impact of rubbish on the environment and they promise to return to their village and share the message to dispose of plastics and rubbish in a more effective manner. The book uses a much loved local song which describes sandy beaches, white waves, green fields and the homesickness you feel when you leave the islands to emphasise their personal responsibility to litter disposal for the protection of their beloved environment. How and where are the books distributed? I am supporting a local couple, Ambih and Fitri, to manage printing, sales and distribution of the book. I assist them with edits and reproduction at the local printer in Lombok then Ambih distributes the books to resellers and takes copies for donation to the schools. Fitri, Ambih’s wife, and her friends take the book to schools and read it to classes. Local children sell to tourists and in turn, the tourists read to the children. There are also some wonderful
people in Lombok who have businesses and have been supporting the community for a long time. They were quick to add this to their list of initiatives. They buy books for their local schools and help us to promote and distribute the books. Often they organise special trips for backpackers and other tourists to read to classes. Mahamaya Resort, Kies Villas and Sempiak Villas are local resorts to date who have purchased then sent staff to local schools to read the book in the three languages. Can you recall a moment where you realised you’d made a difference to these kids by creating something like Surfing Sam and Mr Turtle? I do but it isn’t just the kids. When the guy that printed the book gave me the first copies he had a tear in his eye. He explained it was the first story book he had seen in the Sasak language. The second time was when I was able to talk with older people in the village in Sasak. It was so funny. They laughed a lot when I read the Sasak version of the book. There are very few Westerners that can speak Sasak. It was such a joy interacting with them. Probably the moment that gave me goose bumps was when I realised another purpose for the book. I knew that many people only speak Sasak, not Indonesian, but it never occurred to me that many people cannot read. It wasn’t until I gave the book to some friends – some in their thirties. They looked at me with their gentle smiles and thanked me and quietly explained they cannot read. So the book has become even more precious to me − the thought that the book can be used as a resource for not only school kids, but their parents and relatives too. How has this entire experience changed your life? I assumed charity was something where you had to sacrifice time and effort and often we’re all short of a spare dose of both. I now realise it is a lifestyle choice. Projects like this 13
give us a means of interacting with people in a way that is much deeper and very enriching. We can perform life changing actions from the relative comfort of our homes/offices/transit lounges. Often, with just a mouse click. You can help more than you realise and for me it was as simple as putting pen to paper in a language that was not yet written. What advice do you have for others who spend (or are planning to) time in different regions of the world? We don’t need to approach everything with a view to changing and fixing things. I thought helping these people start businesses, learn new skills and the like would make their world a better place. But I have seen that many Westerners start businesses with locals then use an authoritarian method of running them. It is more about interacting with a local culture, sharing a common purpose, delighting in each other’s differences and learning. They can tell the time by the sun, they know the tides without looking on the internet, they gather food and provide for their happy families, they integrate work with life in a way where they don’t suffer from stress and associated illnesses. The likes of Surfing Sam doesn’t negatively impact on their way of life but may enhance it with a small understanding of the environmental impacts of their lives coupled with a thirst for learning and a recording of their language. Find Surfing Sam on Facebook and Amazon books. Purchasing one book ($15) provides five books for children and families. Or, pool resources for a box of 30 (an average Australian class size, ($360)), which provides books for an entire school. To donate for publication, visit Surfing Sam’s Facebook page for details or email lianneconnor@hotmail.com.

LIFE STYLING
How to:Braid bun Braids are still very much on trend this coming spring/summer. They’ve been seen internationally on the catwalk and are a major hair inspiration for contemporary brides. I have come up with a simple yet beautiful braided bun for you to try...
STEPS: 1 Divide your hair into three even sections and secure with sectioning clips. 2 Starting with the middle section, create a three strand plait, securing at the end with a grip. 3 Repeat with the left and right sections of hair. 4 Gently loosen up the plait by massaging the hair. 5 Do this to all three plaits like in the previous image. 6 Starting with the middle plait, twist in the shape of a bun, and pin with bobby pins to secure. 7 Repeat this step with the left plait, securing in place with a bobby pins. 8 Repeat again with the last plait. Secure in place with bobby pins hiding the ends. Aleesha (aleeshadarke.com) is an experienced hairdresser based on the Gold Coast. Spring clean your gut pring is the ideal time to consider a detox program. It is the season associated with renewal and rejuvenation – new life starts to break through the ground, flowers bloom, birds begin to nest, and we ourselves are coming out of a dormant winter of heavier foods and inactivity. We are constantly being exposed to toxins on a daily basis, and although we have a very sophisticated detoxification process within our bodies, it can become overwhelmed. Toxins are in the foods we eat, the air we breathe, the water we drink and materials with which we surround ourselves. In addition, bodily functions such as digestion, elimination, physical activity, combating illnesses and dealing with stress produce a number of toxic by-products which the body needs to process. There are several signs/symptoms the body gives us that let us know it is not coping with this toxic load. Some of these include: • Headaches, muscle aches and pains, digestive issues such as bloating, constipation, irritable bowel. • Feeling stressed, tired, overwhelmed, poor concentration, depression, anxiety. • Poor immunity, recurrent infections, adverse reactions (e.g. food intolerances). • Weight gain. • Poor skin, hormonal imbalances, infertility. • Lacking the energy not only to exercise, but to do day-to-day activities. • Insomnia, brain fog. What is a detox? Detoxification is designed to take the burden off your digestive organs,
whilst providing essential nutrients for the body to repair and heal itself, improving wellbeing and vitality. It is based on natural, unprocessed, fresh foods which are rich in vitamins, enzymes, minerals, essential fatty acids, proteins and complex carbohydrates. This helps to increase gastric secretions and restore your body’s ability to digest more efficiently and eliminate quickly. It is important to ensure sufficient nutrients are consumed while cleansing in order to help maintain high energy levels throughout the day. There are several forms of detox programs, and depending upon your health, it may be best done under the guidance of a qualified health practitioner. One I recommend I call “Back to Basics” – avoiding caffeine, alcohol, smoking, gluten, dairy, artificial colours / flavours / additives, refined sugar, deli meats, processed and packaged foods. It is not hard, although you need to get organised and remove “temptations” out of the house, but you can really feel marvelous by making the simplest changes. This should be for about four weeks – the longer the better! Another option is detox fasting – using fermented foods, probiotics and amino acids
15
and restricting calories. It is recommended for 10 days only, and can be extremely beneficial in cases of high toxicity and inflammation. It helps “reset” the gut and can be a great tool for making major health changes quickly. If you are tired of feeling BLAH! and have been for a while, consider a spring clean for your gut. It may be worthwhile seeing a qualified health practitioner to assess your health and see what other factors may be contributing.

How to make over
Spring is the perfect time to freshen up your life. Luke Sheedy shares five practical strategies on how to get started on your own unique spring clean
your life
pring’s arrival is heralded by longer sunny days, balmy nights and nature in all its blooming glory. Put away your winter woollies, swap your knee highs for strappy sandals and embrace the change in season. There’s no better time to look towards a fresh start than spring time. It’s the perfect time to spring clean your house, your mind and your life. De-clutter your home Let’s start this journey by focusing on the space that you wake up to each morning – your home. How long has it been since you gave your home a good cleaning out? A household that is messy and in disarray can cause added stress to your life. Clear out your wardrobes and cupboards. Wash your blinds and curtains, wipe the dust from walls and surfaces and clean out the pantry. Make your space beautiful – a new rug, cushions, candle or even fresh flowers can dramatically change the energy of a room. The chi (energy) within your home will flow better. Create an environment that uplifts your spirits. To do list: Allocate 30 minutes each week for the next month or two to spring clean. Go through a room at a time and clear items that are no longer needed by donating them to charity (including clothes you’ve
September 2014
in 5 steps been waiting for the ‘right time’ to wear). Install shelving to help with organisation. Don’t forget to the clear the pantry of winter comfort food and re-stock it with healthy choices. Clear your mind Your mental health is also boosted when you de-clutter. When your environment is full of clutter, your headspace can mimic the same. De-cluttering your headspace involves dealing with anxiety, stress, worry and other negative emotions. Many of us hold onto negative emotions such as jealousy, anger, hatred, worry or fear. These emotions don’t add anything to your life and are detrimental to your health and wellbeing. They hold you back from living life to its fullest potential. Stop giving your energy away to someone else and focus on giving it back to you. With a clearer head space you can start to listen to what your inner heart is telling you. Focus on what you really want out of your life. Maybe it’s time to start a new career, your own online business or take that overseas trip. When our visions open, our horizons expand. To accomplish anything in life, it’s vital to focus on what you want and dream big. Don’t let your future happen to you, meet it half way. Be committed to living your dreams awake. Live your life according to you and not the expectations of others. To do list: For at least 15 minutes each day for the next month, or for this lifetime, find a quiet place where you can be alone with no distractions. It could be a special spot in your home or garden, where you can just be still to clear your mind. It could be going for a walk along the beach, or taking a yoga or meditation class. Choose whatever works for you. It will not only help deal with anxiety and stress, but when you’re in a state of silence and stillness, insights, hunches or a gut feeling will be revealed to you. By having the courage to follow these instructions you will locate your treasure, putting you on your 16
path to live the life you want. Clear your schedule When the cobwebs are cleared, your mind becomes clearer and you’ll soon start reassessing your priorities. This is when time becomes precious. It’s time to clear your diary and make time for priorities. Focus on the life you want to live. Don’t complain about not having enough time. To follow your dreams and live the life you want, you need to make time for things that are important to you. Push beyond your comfort zone, the easier path isn’t always the right way for our higher learning and growth. Maybe it’s time to take the road less travelled. Throw away your security blanket and stretch out and risk. Challenge yourself. Engage in activities you’ve never done before, are passionate about, or that fulfil a purpose or dream. Start a business plan for your online business, enrol in that makeup course, learn a foreign language, or get the visa application rolling for that overseas working holiday. Volunteer time to a charity. If you want to get fit prioritise time to exercise. Make time to do something that you’ve always wanted to do or something that you enjoy doing. You might just learn something new about yourself and create the life that you want to live.
Your mental health is also boosted when you declutter. When your environment is full of clutter, your headspace can mimic the same. De-cluttering your headspace involves dealing with anxiety, stress, worry and other negative emotions. Have you ever noticed the more you think about, examine and analyse an issue, the more irritated, upset and downright miserable you become? As they say, the devil is in the detail. These emotions can then set the mood for the rest of the day. A calmer presence can be found when you stop over-analysing everything, become less rigid and ‘go with the flow’. Picture yourself swimming downstream, not upstream against the current. Let go, and lighten up. Smile yourself out of a bad mood. Your brain cannot tell the difference between a posed smile and a genuine one – they have the same result. By becoming more positive and less wary of others’ actions, the happier you will be throughout your day. Don’t focus on insignificant troubles, it’s too exhausting. Keep your energy for the more important things in your life, you. To do list: Each day for the next month if you find yourself weighed down with trivial matters to do with work, family or relationships, let it go. When you do, your life lightens up. Don’t allow your mind to think about things you are unable to control or influence. Say to yourself, “This is beyond my control, like water off a duck’s back, I am not allowing this to upset me, I am letting go.” Don’t allow negative emotions to set the tone for the day. Time is precious and valuable, make every minute count by making time work for you. Plant the seeds today for a better tomorrow. To do list: Clear your diary and schedule an appointment for what’s really important to you. We all get the same amount of time each day, how are you spending your allocation? Work out how you spend your time by keeping a tally of everything you do and the amount of time it takes. Once your week is written out, look at where you can make time for your personal growth. Don’t sweat the small stuff Spring is often associated with change, new beginnings and growth. It’s also the perfect time to take stock of your emotional, mental and spiritual wellbeing. With our busy lifestyles, we are too stressed to deal with the things that make us feel stressed! It could be our overwhelming to-do list, or the constant mind chatter that preoccupies our thoughts.
Detox your relationships Moods are infectious, and are not only
affected by our own emotions and inner conflicts, but also by those whose company we keep. Toxic relationships zap your energy (in my clinic, the term I use is energy vampires). Don’t underestimate how much energy vampires can affect not only your mood, but your self-esteem. As Epictetus, the Greek sage said, “The key is to keep company only with people who uplift you, whose presence calls forth your best.” We all know of a ‘friend’ that has a negative thought pattern which can influence our own lives when we hang around them. If they are holding you back from being happy, healthy or fulfilled you need to stop giving your energy away to them. Energy vampires tend to affect your drive, vitality and your zest for life. To do list: It’s time to hang around the beautiful people. Spend more time with the positive people who make you laugh, smile and encourage you to be the best version of yourself. Pay close attention to friends who deplete you and those that uplift you. Avoid anyone who brings you down with their negativity. Be honest with yourself and identify relationships that are no longer right for you. By embracing change and letting go of the stagnant energy in your life, you create space and invite possibility, fulfilment, adventure and the opportunity to follow your dreams. This is your life, it’s time for a spring clean, make the all-important decision to detoxify and de-clutter in all aspects of your life. There’s no better time than spring time.

REAL LIFE with Sonia St Claire
New release book, The Girl in the Locker, tells of the inspirational true journey of survival by Gold Coast-based author, Sonia St Claire. The book follows Sonia and her twin sister, Sarah, as they are sent to several orphanages from just three months of age. Suffering unimaginable abuse including physical violence, sexual slavery, neglect and emotional abuse, Sonia shares her story of strength, survival and fight for freedom. An emotional, insightful and engaging read... --book extract, chapter 18-Closure: On Monday 10 February 2014, I fronted the Australian Royal Commission into child sexual abuse against children in institutional care. I gave my statement, which I read out to them. It was easier for me that way. I still broke down and cried. The memories will always be with me forever. I just live with them as best I can. I was treated so well, with such respect and reverence, understanding and caring. They were so gracious and compassionate toward me. I felt their empathy. They made it as easy as possible for me to get through the reading of my statement. I will always be grateful for their treatment of me. When I gave my testimony, they asked me for the full names of my children’s fathers, the two men who violently abused me as an adult, and they also have been documented on my file for the federal government. On Friday 14 February 2014, I fronted Towards Healing, a meeting with three orders of the nuns who had abused me. They were the, Good Samaritan nuns, the St Joseph nuns. It was also a very positive experience for me. I broke down and cried, which I hoped I wouldn’t, but I just couldn’t contain myself. As I told the Sisters who represented each order of the nuns the life that ensued for me as an adult, and the negative decisions that I had made because of what happened to me in the orphanages for fourteen years. They listened intently, and were so gracious. I have never met nuns like them before. They made me feel special, and worthy. One even told me I was beautiful. My heart went out to them as their hearts went out to me. It was all so wonderful and dignified. Each one of them apologised to me on behalf of the nuns who abused me. They each said, ‘Sonia, I would like to apologise to you on behalf of the Sisters September 2014
Sarah (left) and Sonia (right)
The Girlin the locker
that abused you, and say how sorry I am that you had to go through that’. I could see that they were sincere. I waited sixty-three years to hear those words. When the meeting was over, I asked the Sisters if I could give them a hug. They said yes. They held onto me with such adoration, kindness and consideration, I knew I was in the arms of love. I didn’t want to let them go. I wished they had looked after me when I was young. It would have been a whole different experience. They asked me to pray for them. I send them love each and every day, and have them in my daily prayers. The most important thing for me on the day was the fact that they said, ‘I’m sorry’. Thank you, Sisters, from the bottom of my heart. Your kindness will never be forgotten. I now have some kind of closure. It won’t take away my memories, but they will be easier to bear. I forgive all my perpetrators.True healing begins. Postscript I was one of many children who suffered at the hands of churches and government bodies throughout Australia and the world from the fifties through to the seventies. I was just one lonely number who never had a voice.Things are very different now with the Royal Commission, which is investigating the historic sexual abuse of children in institutional care. The dirty little secrets are all coming out. There is nowhere for the perpetrators to hide any more. They are now hanging their heads, but whether in shame or guilt I will never know. They are being named and numbered, and there are many. For me, most of my tormentors are now dead. Before the Royal Commission, which is currently being held in Australia and has been ongoing since 2013, there was a senate inquiry into the abuse of children in institutional care back in August 2004. I have a copy of that 410-page report sent to me by the Australian government. My submission number is 374, on page 354. The stories in the senate committee report are horrifying. One woman tells of how her three-year-old brother had a brain tumour. The 18
Sarah (left) and Sonia (right)
nuns beat him so badly around the head, the tumour burst and he died. Some child migrants that were murdered in these homes were never seen or heard of again. It was assumed that these children were transferred to hospital or another home and there was no information to confirm or deny the lies of the carers. The police and the authorities always accepted, without question, the lies of the brothers, nuns and priests. I almost lost my own life at the age of fourteen. The nuns lied about that too. These nuns, brothers, caregivers and priests were accountable to no one. They were looked upon as deities to be revered. They literally got away with murder. According to CLAN there were at least half a million children who were in these institutions in Australia alone. Not all of these people have come forward to give evidence to the Royal Commission as they are still, to this day, too traumatised to do so. I have personally spoken to a woman who was in St Martha’s children’s home, the home in which I lived for five years. She and her younger sister were in there for two years, and the abuse they suffered was so horrendous that the younger sister ending up taking her own life as she couldn’t cope with her memories. Her mother also took her own life due to the guilt she suffered for putting them both in the home. I am happy to have the ability to be able to put pen to paper and fingers to the keyboard, to be a voice for millions around the world who are still too traumatised to speak for themselves. It is my pleasure, my honour, to do this on behalf of those people. The Girl in the Locker is available in all good bookstores, published by New Holland, RRP $26.95. After overcoming great adversity, author Sonia St Claire is now a qualified clinical hypnotherapist, nutritional counselor, iridologist and Reiki Master. Sonia is passionate about the power of physical and mental health and their role in overcoming life’s great obstacles.

It’s not surprising we worry about our eyebrows, because they actually help to define a face. So much so, that a recent study has shown if eyebrows are removed from an image, facial recognition technology is only successful in identifying an individual in 46 per cent of cases! Historically too, eyebrows have been the focal point on a face, and have often been highlighted (bleached or blackened) and complemented by strong, stunning hair styles and wigs (think Cleopatra and Elizabeth Taylor). Essentially, our eyebrows play a critical role in defining our look and identity. 3D Brow Building was developed in 2013 by a partnership of talented businessminded women who could see a gap not
BEFORE
issues AFTER
only in this important beauty market, but also gaps in many of their distressed clients’ eyebrows. The treatment was two years in the making with some of London’s leading chemists working with the team to produce what they call a “super” grade adhesive that conforms to all manufacturing standards for 2015, and in some cases the European Union standards for 2018. The clients this treatment is targeting are those who consider themselves “challenged” when it comes to showing off bold brows. With the rise in Chemotherapy patients, over-plucked and under styled brows, 3D Brow Building has understandably attracted a lot of interest and is in hot demand. Today we aim for symmetry in order to achieve beauty goals. That is, healthy-looking twin eyebrows with arches that are in proportion to the face shape. Growth serums and eyebrow transplants are emerging as contemporary options to solve eyebrow issues, but these procedures are essentially reserved for the rich and famous. But, here
on the GC, you simply need to enquire at Lella Hammam who indeed offer the new and extensively-researched 3D Brow Building method, which allows clients to “beef up” their brows, mask scarring and non-existent brow lines all at once.

SUCCESS
with Sarah Blinco
Local
innovation goStandby promises to be the next big thing in travel apps, and it’s been developed right here on the Gold Coast. Sarah Blinco meets Nathan Challen and his team behind the tech ho is involved in the development of goStandby? We are Nathan Challen (CEO), Britney Marsden (Graphic and UI / UX designer), Jacob Turner (marketing/ branding and finance) and Justin McPherson (iOS developer). What’s goStandby all about? It’s an innovative mobile app targeting the last minute tours and activities market. The app offers tourists and locals the ability to instantly book quality tours and activities departing today or tomorrow directly from their iPhone. Gone are the days of calling around tour desks and checking availability on websites to see if you can get on a tour at the last minute. Simply look, book and go! What initially inspired the idea? With a background in the Inbound Tourism Industry, I identified an opportunity in the day tours and activities space. Similar to the well-known hotel booking app HotelTonight, goStandby app only offers committed tour departures in the next 48 hours, we offer genuine ‘last minute’ availability and pricing for the convenience of mobile travelers in the area to book. How’s it all going so far? It is rewarding to hear all the compliments about the app and the problem we are solving for both consumers and the industry. We have had travel suppliers as far as Broome WA wanting to list their product and industry experts as far as the USA complimenting us on the solution we have designed. Closer to home, we were just last month ranked 7th in Anthill Magazines’ September 2014
(a business /entrepreneur publication) annual SMART 100 competition which was a great honour. What are your aims for developing it this year? We would like to see goStandby become the new way of finding things to do in Australia. We also have our sights set on selected markets internationally. Here on the Gold Coast there are so many great tours and attractions in our own backyard. goStandby is a platform where local operators can release an offer depending on the weather and demand. We would love to see this dynamic pricing enable Gold Coast families and day trippers to enjoy more of what is on offer in this great place. How did your team all end up together working on this project? goStandby were the winners of the first Gold Coast Startup Weekend in 2013, a startup event run in cities right across the globe, and have since knuckled down to turn the winning concept into a reality. What’s your view of the future when it comes to app technology? The beauty of apps is in their simplicity. They generally solve a single, simple problem for the user but do it really well. What makes the best apps remarkable is how they seamlessly integrate technology into our daily lives. The turning point for the mass appeal of apps was when smartphones became aware of our surroundings and linking our physical world into the connected online world.Geo location awareness, the camera, maps, scanning, integration with social networks 30
technology are just a few examples of how we integrate the traveller through the goStandby app. The next wave for apps is potentially around sensor and beacon technology where we further integrate with our environments such as our homes, shopping centres, streets, car and airports. We are already experiencing that wave and the next will be around our interaction with devices, a smartwatch, Google glass, mind reading − only the future will tell! How we interact with apps and further extending the connections into the cloud is the future. What’s your success mantra? Build or create something you are passionate about, solve a problem or provide a service that you yourself would use. It is far more rewarding when you invest your time and energy into a product or service that genuinely interests you. It wasn’t hard for our team to get excited about being in the travel industry. When you’re not working, where would we find you hanging out on the GC? Startup events and co-working spaces are a great place to hang out and meet new and interesting people, and you will often find our team attending many local events. Check out the Silicon Lakes website or the Meetup app for Silicon Beach events. We all enjoy getting out to many of the Gold Coast’s cafes, as well as the beaches, and with families; Hinterland and parks are always great because it’s a chance to get away from our desks and computer screens. Stay up to date with the latest on goStandby on Facebook.com/gostandby

New term starts with new facilities and digital technology partner aint Stephen’s College students started the new school term with new science learning enhancement and project facilities – billed among the best in Australia in setting learning standards. In addition, Headmaster Jamie Dorrington says the College is working on a partnership with Microsoft that will enhance the Year 6 programme. The new Science-in-Action, Team Projects and Learning Enhancement faculties complement the Arts and Applied Technology precinct completed and opened early this year. “The College has developed a number of technology-rich learning spaces over the last few years including a purposebuilt Language Centre, iCentre and a special facility for Year 7 Maths and Humanities. We are also currently working on a Year 6 programme in partnership with Microsoft. These new facilities are
designed to promote the personalisation of learning, as well as collaboration and communication. The physical changes at the school are coordinated with changes in the way teachers and other staff facilitate learning. This includes the use of analytics, the purposeful employment of laptops and the development of a rich Learning Management System. There is no doubt we have amongst the best educational facilities in the country and I believe we are continuing to set new standards for student engagement, collaboration and personalisation of learning,” says Mr Dorrington. He adds that the new facilities are designed to encourage students to reach
personal bests. “In less than 20 years the College grounds, facilities and technology have undergone major developments that rival any school and most universities. More importantly the people who occupy these impressive spaces have remained our most valuable assets.” Modern technology is part of the College in-class and training programmes for staff and students. It includes state-ofthe-art computers and latest generation wireless networks, ‘Bring your own laptop’ programme, a virtual learning environment and extensive interactive whiteboard programme. GETOUTTHERE
with Caroline Marquez
Lending a
hand
Caroline Marquez meets some inspiring volunteers who want to remind us all that giving time to help others will not only benefit the community, but you might discover you’ll gain a whole lot out of the experience too iving the privileged life of a ‘typical Gold Coaster’, it is hard to associate and sometimes even reflect on the hardship and atrocities that happen in Australia and around the globe. We are so consumed by our everyday lives that occasionally, we forget to be grateful for the life we have and this can be a reflection of how our society operates at times. However, the amount of times we’re overjoyed to see people commit random acts of kindness are countless and, the thousands of unpaid volunteers that through commitment, dedication and passion have done so much for our community are our true heroes. They provide humanitarian assistance not only when emergencies occur but offer an enormous array of services that without reading this, you probably didn’t know existed. Australia has a long and proud tradition of volunteering and it’s without a doubt that we are strong believers in the power of people. Organisations like the Red Cross offer many programs supporting communities in Australia and overseas by immediately responding to emergencies such as natural disasters and even war. SES (State Emergency Service) is on call 24/7 and their national organisation of volunteers is referred to as “ordinary people doing extraordinary things”. They become involved in storms, landslides, search for missing persons and animal disease outbreaks. Other remarkable volunteering work is seen through the tremendous support given to thousands of sick children and their families by the Starlight Children’s Foundation. September 2014
They pride themselves on making sure a sick child’s hospital stay isn’t about sadness and fear. The stress of multiple hospital visits can put immense pressure on children and their families but thanks to Starlight volunteers, children can still smile, have the opportunity to be a regular kid and sometimes, even forget they are sick. Without forgetting our amazing animal shelter volunteers from the Animal Welfare League and the RSPCA, who brighten the lives of thousands of animals that come into their care each year, another newly established organisation, the Siberian Husky & Alaskan Malamute Rescue of QLD (SHAMROQ) are doing outstanding work too. They specialise in and rescue these magnificent dog breeds from neglectful owners. Marnie Gray, rescue and adoption co-ordinator of SHAMROQ says many times people buy a Husky or Malamute without doing any research on their needs and what to expect. “So many people say they’ve ‘always wanted a Husky’− and after movies like Snow Dogs and Eight Below, we can understand why. What movies don’t show is the reality, and there’s only one way to work out whether a Husky is the dog for you and that is to live with one.” SHAMROQ offers hands-on experience for people considering welcoming one into their family − a ‘try before you buy’ through facilitating foster homes. By spreading awareness about the rescue, de-sexing pets (so as to address the problem that sees 250,000 healthy companions killed in Australian pounds each year), as well as 36
education about ethical and responsible breeders, SHAMROQ is making a difference each day. Marnie is a true believer that through volunteering and helping to make a difference, our children learn compassion, empathy and responsibility. She says the most important part of the organisation are the amazing volunteers she works with. “Without them we would not be able to help as many dogs as we do… everyone in our little organisation donates their valuable time and talents, fitting our rescue work around day jobs and/ or families and our own dog commitments. However, we’re all very passionate about what we do and the literal life-and-death difference that we are making. Our goal for the future is to continue saving as many dogs as possible and finding them responsible, committed and loving owners who will treasure them forever.” Julie Boucher, 35, who is a very active volunteer for SES and Red Cross Australia shares the same dedicated enthusiasm and passion for her work. She volunteered proactively during the 2010/2011 Queensland floods that affected over 200,000 people forcing many to evacuate their homes. Julie says people who miss out on volunteering are missing out on an important component of humanity.“We as a society have completely lost what volunteering can put back into our lives, and it’s not just a feeling of accomplishment. Your feet are firmly planted on the ground and you’re there for a real cause. You’re reminded of what it means to be a human being; there is no sense of materialism or worrying about
what you’re going to wear the next day when you’re surrounded by people who have lost so much.” During her volunteer missions Julie has worked 18-20 hour days and even slept on concrete floors but she explains that it’s the hardest things that are the most rewarding. “It’s an incredible sense of satisfaction and the team of people I’ve met and worked with have changed my life, some have even become my best friends since we’ve been thrown into situations together that no one else understands.” While Julie and Marnie’s contributions are nothing short of outstanding, there are less hard-core options for people wanting to be part of something amazing and the great thing is, anyone can do it. The diversity of organisations and the abundant volunteering options available means there’s a place for everyone, no matter what your skills and interests are. Environmental and educational, marketing and graphics, events, sports and even music and entertaining surely make connecting and supporting our community easy for everyone. Some have even made successful careers out of the valuable experience they’ve obtained and, the portfolio they’ve created while volunteering. We all have busy schedules and between work and family commitments (to name but a couple) the idea of doing something extra seems next to impossible. Most organisations however, are flexible with people who want to lend a hand but who have busy lives, and you can show your support with as little as an hour a week of your time. In some instances you can even help from home by checking and replying to emails or letters and answering phone calls − so give it a go, you never know who you’re going to meet or what positive change you will make. Not only that, until you step up, you’ll never know what the change could do for you too.

10 Surprising Dog Details
1 2 3 4 5 6 7
If your dog is behaving particularly crazy or erratic, it might be because a storm is on the way. Dogs have a sixth sense, of sorts, and can hear, smell and feel a change in the weather (among many other things) long before us. Your pooch’s earliest ancestor is a small weasel-like creature called a Miacis, which lived 40 million years ago. Dogs share this ancestor with wolves, raccoons and bears. Puppies are actually born deaf, blind and toothless, and the first sense a puppy develops is touch. “Dog’s breath”, if persistent, signifies dental disease or illness − it’s not normal so have it checked out. Puppies and dogs don’t really enjoy hugging! In the canine world, putting your limb over another animal’s body part signifies dominance. Dogs dream like we do, and studies have found they are probably dreaming about familiar activities such as playing with a ball or running at the beach. Tail wagging has its own language, and excited wagging doesn’t necessarily mean excitement. Apparently dogs wag their tails to the right when they’re happy and to the left when they’re apprehensive. Low wagging means they feel insecure and rapid tail wagging with tensed muscles can mean aggression.
Quirky conversation starters about your best friends
8 9 10 1 2 3 4
Border Collies (or “working dogs”) and Poodles are thought to be the most intelligent dogs, and it’s been estimated dogs are as smart as a toddler (two-year-old) child. Dogs can count and understand over 150 words. Dogs can smell thousands of times better than us − their brain’s smell centre is 40 times larger than in a human brain. No two dog noses are the same. A dog’s nose print is as unique as a human’s fingerprint, and can be used to determine identity.
10 Cool Cat Facts
The ancient Egyptians believed cats had magical powers and that they protected homes and children from danger. Sometimes cats were even mummified after death because they were considered so important. Cats love to groom themselves and indeed spend almost one third of their life doing so. Only domestic cats are able to hold their tail proudly vertical while walking! All wild cats hold their tails horizontally or tucked between their legs while wandering along. You won’t win a race against your cat, for it is fast (like its cousin, the tiger) and can
run about 48 km/ph (we can run on average around 24 to 28 km/ph). Your cat’s whiskers are utilised for all sorts of stealth missions, including assisting it to locate prey while hunting in the dark. Cats also use their whiskers to help them discover small openings. While your cat’s whiskers will grow back if you cut them, you may cause them to work less effectively by cutting (so best to leave them alone). Cats are the sleepiest of all mammals and in fact nap for around 16 hours a day. So, a seven year old cat is only awake for two years of its life! How old is your cat? If he/she is three, they are 21 in human years. Eight is 40 in human years and 14 is 70. Watch the colour shift in your kitten’s eyes. Is it yellow or green? It actually changes as the kitten grows, so no, you’re not delusional. As for dogs, a cat’s nose pad’s pattern is unique, just like human fingerprints. How much does your cat love you? Watch your cat’s tail quivering when it is near − this is the greatest show of affection your cat will lavish upon you. A thrashing tail indicates the opposite though, so look out...

How do I choose a
pet stylist?
First impressions are lasting, so the initial vibe you pick up from your pet salon is important. s the salon clean and well presented? Are the staff friendly and professional? Finding the right salon for your pet is essential for their safety and your peace of mind. Don’t be misled by false advertisers. As an unregulated industry, anyone can call themselves a “professional pet groomer”, whether they are or they just bought a pair of clippers on eBay. Be mindful there are two basic recognised qualifications in the pet grooming industry which are a Cert III in Companion Animal Studies and Cert IV Senior Stylist. Don’t be fooled by salons that advertise themselves as “cage free” because according to the Queensland State Veterinary Award Code of Practice, all animals must be caged for their own protection. Ensure your pet is 100 per cent safe by only using trusted pet grooming salons. Louise from Petz with Pizazz is one of only 20 international certified master groomers in Australia. DINING with Chris Mcleay
Meet me atDragon Cove
anctuary Cove Marine Village is home to one of my new favourite restaurants,Dragon Cove Chinese Cuisine. The restaurant was jam packed with diners on a Wednesday night, which made me thankful I had booked ahead. We were greeted warmly by the smiling waitress, and ushered to our table. After speaking with manager, Jackie Cheng, I learned the main dining room can hold up to 150 guests, plus a further 50 people on the alfresco terrace boasting stunning views of the Sanctuary Cove Marina. The menu was offered with a brief explanation of the weekly specials. I was pleased to see the menu was extensive, but not difficult to read, and was laid out in Cantonese and English, with a detailed description of each dish. I have a ritual when I visit a Chinese eatery; I must order the spring rolls! Within minutes our entrees had arrived and the Homemade Spring Rolls with Pork and Vegetables ($8) were possibly the best I have experienced. The pastry was delicately crisp and encased a tender strip of seasoned pork loin. As I bit into the roll, a cloud of steam poured out with rich aromas of the sauteed vegetables. I was about to order another round until my partner suggested I try some other items on the menu. Next was the Pork and Prawn Gum Lo Wontons with Sweet & Tangy Sauce ($12). Again a well executed dish. The Pork mince was not fighting with the subtle flavour of the prawn, and the crisp wonton pastry was crunchy until the very last bite. For main course the question was, do we try the house specialty Peking Duck? Or do we try a September 2014

dish from the extensive a la carte menu? The Peking Duck is prepared daily and can be included as part of a three course set menu ($48). First course is Peking Duck carved in front of the guest, direct from the Peking oven. The carved meat is then rolled into 10 pieces of Peking Duck Pancake. Second course is Duck San Choi Boi followed by the third course; a steaming hot bowl of Duck Fried Rice. After much debate, we opted for a few selections off the menu and decided on the Braised Pork Belly with Preserved Vegetables ($22), plus the lightly battered Honey Chicken ($19). The Yanghzou Fried Rice that includes Prawns and BBQ Pork ($16) was our side dish. The Honey Chicken and Yanghzou Fried Rice arrived first. The portion sizes were generous which is great for people wishing to share. The Honey Chicken was glazed with a thick honey, which miraculously did not interfere with the crispness of the battered chicken. From start to finish the parcels remained crisp and crunchy. The rice was enough for four people and had a robust flavour from being tossed in the wok. I would have liked more vegetables in the rice, but that is only my personal preference. The Braised Pork Belly ($22) arrived in a lidcovered clay pot, and when presented, exuded a 40
deep haze of soy and aromatic flavours that must be experienced to appreciate. The pork was pullapart tender, with the layer of customary pork fat still in tact. The broth of pork and preserved vegetables had absorbed into the pork fat and taken on a mushroom flavour, making it a pleasure to eat. As I let my stomach settle, I watched the dining floor. Table after table ordered items from the Teppan menu. The protein is cooked on a hot plate in front of the guest to enhance flavour. The menu states the Teppan style of cookery was believed to be inspired by Conqueror Genghis Khan himself. Prices for the Teppan range from $20 for Pepper Chicken to $38 for the Wagyu Beef. I had to decline dessert, as I was completely full, and completely satisfied. Dragon Cove is Cantonese cuisine at its finest. Dragon Cove Chinese Cuisine is open six days a week, closed on Tuesday. Yum Cha Lunch starts from 11:30 till 3pm and dinner service 5:30 till 10pm. Take away is available with a similar menu from the a la carte. Function space is available, with a welldecorated private function room that can hold up to 24 people in luxury. What do you know about vinaceous

wines?
The packaging of the wines are both unique and ornate with a theme turning back to the turn of the19th Century
inaceous Wines is the brainchild of wine marketer, Nick Stacy (West Cape Howe), Michael Kerrigan (winemaker/ partner Hay Shed Hill) and Gavin Berry (winemaker/partner West Cape Howe). The marketing of these wines is somewhat genius! The packaging of the wines are both unique and ornate with a theme turning back to the turn of the19th Century embellishing extremely striking images and titles. How to describe them − let’s start with a dictionary reference:
that are grown from parcels of fruit that are dominant and successful in their particular region. Vinaceous wines not only stand out dramatically on the shelf but are usually exceptionally good quality and will leave a lasting memory on the palate. These wines are much deeper and serious than their fun image may portray, and are gently framed to provide good drinking in their youth. Sample these captivating wines at Corkers cellars in September at Sanctuary Cove. Vinaceous Wines will also be featured at the Brisbane Festival, 6 to 27 September.
vinaceous (vai’neifas) adj 1. (Brewing) of, relating to, or containing wine 2. (Colours) having a colour suggestive of red wine [C17: from Late Latin vínáceus, from Latin vínum wine] It’s not just smoke and mirrors, the wines do back up their glamorous packaging and the plan is to emphasise varietals of grapes

H Virgo Aug 23 - Sept 22 With the Sun making its passage through Virgo this month, you should be home and hosed. Perfection is already the case. To try to impose a version of perfection that has been manufactured in your madcap brain over what is already exquisite, is counter-intuitive. Start with ‘what is’. H Libra Sept 22 – Oct 23 Work on setting your foundations. Life might look like it is favouring others. It is actually giving you time to get your act together. The Sun will arrive later in the month, bringing light. As will Venus, bringing delight. Prepare the ground so you can fully receive their gifts. Trust life. H Scorpio Oct 23 – Nov 22 The month begins with the Moon, Mars and Saturn in Scorpio. This makes for energy, emotion and potential frustration. It will take a significant amount of awareness to make this creative. Impulse and reactivity need to turn into drive and response. Stop signs are ‘wake up’ signs. H Sagittarius Nov 22 – Dec 22 Though Jupiter is in Leo, fuelling your confidence, bravado and fire, he is operating behind the scenes. These changes may be happening, even though you are likely to notice them long after your friends have. Trust the undercurrents. The benefits will be on the surface soon enough.
H Capricorn Dec 22 – Jan 20 With Saturn in Scorpio and Pluto in Capricorn, you are getting a double dose of transformation. Perhaps you are becoming more and more aware of the fragility of this mortal existence, and hence learning to value it more consciously and wholeheartedly. Let life touch and change you. H Aquarius Jan 21 – Feb 19 Uranus is retrograde in Aries. It looks like it’s going backwards, though it’s not. The astrological effect is that your desire for freedom is taking an inward turn. Certain things can’t be changed. Life is asking you to respond to those things, rather than react to them.Wake up to this.
H Gemini May 21 – June 21 Most of this month is to be spent trying to find balance. There are many types of balance. There’s the balance of someone sitting still doing nothing – and there’s the balance of the tightrope walker. One is static. One is dynamic. Experiment. Find the type that is right for you.
H Pisces Febr 19 – March 20 Neptune and Chiron are both retrograde. They appear to be going backwards. Add this to the fact that the Sun is in your opposite sign, Virgo, and it would appear that you are being offered a unique set of possibilities. Integrate all that you react to into your being. Stop pushing away.
H Cancer June 21 – July 22 The general tendency over the next few weeks will be to move from the comfort of your own emotional refuge, into adventures that will take you out and about in the world. Life is asking you to expand your horizons. Consider the distant, the different and the exotic. Let limits go.
H Aries March 20 –April 19 From the depths of emotion, to the heights of expansion and possibility. This is the nature of your September trajectory. When in the thrall of feelings, it will be very wise to remember that this too shall pass. How you handle your feelings will determine the creativity of your next step.
H LEO July 22 – Aug 23 For most of September, the Sun is travelling through Virgo. Virgo is a symbol for the order of nature. If you can tune into this, then your essence will grow. If you become either pedantic or chaotic, you will have missed the boat. Relax and nurture your most natural strengths.

H Taurus April 20 – May 21 Before you get to equanimity there are going to be a lot of details to be taken care of. Get ready to put in the time required to prepare yourself for success. Success meaning; having a satisfied feeling in your heart. Fortunately you are filled with confidence at the start of your journey.

Dealing with
change
Could your comfort zone be making you uncomfortable?
’m not sure if change is the enemy or comfort is? We have all been there, we lose our job, our partner leaves us, you move to another town and of course the fact that nothing ever is NOT changing. What is it about change that makes us so fearful? Is it that we are so protective of our comfort or is it that comfort has made us soft to the wonders of change − why can’t change be comfortable and comfort changeable? I have often pondered this dilemma, if you will, and I have some conclusions and ideas around the notion of change. What is it that comfort, also referred to as certainty, gives us? For starters it gives us certainty; certainty means we have control and aren’t likely to be thrown into a situation where we might not know what to do. Comfort is familiar, it’s secure and we know every nook and cranny of our comfort zone, which gives us some relief and reduced stress or difficulty. How comfortable can we be if we are at the mercy of our comfort, and the minute something shatters this comfort we go to bits? Wasn’t our comfort once an uncertainty, an unknown too? Change, even when it feels excruciating, I believe, is life’s way of saying, “have a pit stop and think about how you would like things September 2014
to be now; what changes and amendments would you like to make?” Sometimes change is unwanted, but we must deal with it.The truth is,even when change is unwanted, it’s an opportunity to evolve into something better. Coping with change, I think, is a shift in mindset. We can see it as something scary, unknown, full of uncertainty or not; we could see it as opportunity and a breather. Change may feel uncomfortable, but if you are here reading this, have you not survived it? Have you not learned and grown from it? And just maybe you are in a better place than before the change occurred.
8
PRACTICAL TIPS FOR DEALING WITH CHANGE
Don’t over think it, understand why it has occurred but don’t let your imagination take over. It’s very easy for the mind to over embellish things. Consider the positives to have come from this change. There will always be positives, you may just have to look a little harder sometimes. Start making a list of things that are in your control that you can start putting into action to regain your stability. Consider how you would like things to be and what you would like to be doing
1 2 3 4
50
5 6 7 8
moving forward. What are some of the mistakes that have occurred previously that you can learn from and make positive adjustments with? Make time for some learning and meditation and journal your thoughts. Make time to hang out with trusted friends and get out of your head for a bit. Move, move, move, take action and do not procrastinate; make your to-do list, your action plan and run with it. I can’t promise you that change will never be painless. Sometimes it will be, sometimes it will hurt, but how much it does or doesn’t depends on whether we seek to latch onto the certainty of a comfort no longer in our lives or surrender to the certainty of change and all the good it can bring us.
