A

lmost two years ago, when I first joined the Get it crew, the editorial team and I went on our first “revamp” shoot. With our goals set high, we knew we needed to come up with something fresh and exciting so, with our fingers crossed, we snapped away at the beautiful Kristy Hinze in a lavish 1950s-style spring fashion shoot.

As we viewed the first pictures, we got goosebumps – I had one of those “ah-hah” moments people talk about. Why am I telling you this? I had another one of those moments this month! When the images came back from our food-inspired shoot, I instantly got chills; then I laughed…a lot, and when I got to the cover shot I said, “That’s the one!” Our photographer, Nathan Duff, had perfectly captured the all fierce energy and wild emotion we felt running through our veins on the day. We knew then we needed to share more of these shots with our readers. See page 30 for all the behind-the-scenes mayhem.

Okay, moving on to more excitement. The Broadbeach Food Festival is on this month and I, for one, am eager to sink my teeth into all the action! It’s one of my favourite events on the Gold Coast calendar and each year, as I stroll through the food Mecca taking in the tantalising sights and smells, I literally have to stroll myself drooling! So what better time to do our hunger-busting food issue than now?

We chat to one of Australia’s leading health experts about the importance of eating good, wholesome foods to revitalise our minds and restore our bodies from the inside out.

This month also sees a huge spotlight on London as the City of Opportunity plays host to the highly anticipated Olympic Games. So, with eating and drinking being one of our beloved past times, we thought we’d share some delectable delights currently buzzing in Britain.

‘Love food + love yourself’ gives an insight into why we have such a strong, yet fickle, relationship with food and Biggest Loser slimming success Brenda Hunt takes time to chat about her weightloss journey and life lessons she learned along the way.

the mikado Opens July 7 Opera Queensland’s new production of Gilbert and Sullivan’s comic masterpiece The Mikado opens this July 7.

For director Stuart Maunder the possibilities to reinvent this timeless piece are endless.

“The show has a brilliant design by Simone Romaniuk which references all that Japan has generously bequeathed to modern pop culture: FRUiTS fashion, Hello Kitty, plastic, stuffed toys and micro technology. These are mixed with traditional elements to create a wonderfully eclectic look and feel,” he says.

This hilarious parody unfolds in the mythical town of Titipu, a place where flirting has become a capital crime, punishable by death.

A year before the action unfolds, Nanki-Poo, son of the Mikado (the Emperor of Japan), fled his father’s imperial court to escape certain marriage with the resident court cougar Katisha. Disguised as a travelling musician, Nanki-Poo falls in love with Yum-Yum, the young ward of the town’s tailor Ko-Ko, to whom she is betrothed. All seems lost for Nanki-Poo - until he hears that Ko-Ko has been condemned to death for flirting. Spurred on by hope, Nanki-Poo returns to Titipu to reclaim the heart of his beloved Yum-Yum. But, as in most British comedy, events take a turn toward the absurd and the saucy.

Flight Of The Conchords The wait is over. New Zealand’s much loved folk comedy duo Flight Of The Conchords are finally coming to Australia!

H

old on tight to your Hiphopopotamus and your mother flippin’ rhymenoceros, ‘cause Flight of the Conchords are on their way here! Our favourite Kiwis, Bret McKenzie and Jemaine Clement, have finally announced their long-awaited tour down Under. The Frontier Touring Company will be bringing the comedy duo to visit fans on the other side of the Tasman for their first ever australian headline tour this July.

“We are finally returning to australia. Mostly to apologise,” Jemaine quips.

In a buoyant career spanning almost 15 years, Flight Of The Conchords has become one of australia’s favourite comedy and musical acts, with the band gaining notoriety for their hilarious ditties including ‘Carol Brown’, ‘Foux da Fafa’, ‘Epileptic dogs’ and many more.

New Zealand’s self-proclaimed “fourth most popular folk-parody duo” make musical comedy an art form. Throughout their live performances the duo picks up multiple instruments, including the ukulele, toy piano, keytar, synth and a “1987 Casio dG-20 electric guitar set to mandolin” to create the sounds of some of the most bizarrely wonderful crowd sing-a-longs heard onstage. after getting their start in stand up comedy, Bret and Jemaine created a radio series for

BBC radio 2 before launching into acclaimed HBO comedy series Flight Of The Conchords which propelled the duo into the limelight on a global scale. The series spanned two seasons and earned them a massive 10 Emmy nominations and a WGa nomination for Best Comedy Series.

The musical musings of Flight Of The Conchords formed the backbone of their much loved, self titled series and were celebrated in two highly successful soundtracks; Flight Of The Conchords and I Told You I Was Freaky.

These albums earned the band six spots in the Triple J Hottest 100 over two years for hits like ‘Business Time’, ‘Hurt Feelings’ and ‘Too Many dicks on the dancefloor’.

“It’s safe to say this is the most endlessly playable comedy album of the new millennium,” reports the UK’s fabulously crass music magazine, Uncut.

Far from strangers to the spotlight, Flight Of The Conchords have come a long way from winning Best Newcomer at the Melbourne International Comedy Festival more than a decade ago.

Most recently, both performers have been pursuing the big screen. Bret took on the role of Music Supervisor for The Muppets movie and recently won the Best Original Song Oscar for his composition ‘Man Or Muppet’.

This track beat out its counterpart from the film Rio to win the award, a film that coincidentally featured Bret’s partner in crime and Men In Black III star Jemaine Clement.

It’s hard to pinpoint what has kept the duo from touring our shores all this time. Was it band manager Murray’s inability to get the guys a gig outside of an aquarium, Bret’s commitments to his sign holding job or Jemaine’s fear that his aussie ex-girlfriend, Keitha, would be waiting eagerly for his arrival? regardless, one thing’s for sure: it’s going to be one heck of a good time!

ho knows where Calypso Bay is? Sounds very exotic, doesn’t it? Calypso Bay is a fairly new waterfront housing estate about a half an hour drive, or two hours by boat, north of Sanctuary Cove. What a great place! The focal point of Calypso Bay is the marina and a fantastic watering hole called Harrigans. How has this place been kept secret for so long?

My best buddy Chris “The Piano Man” Young entered a Jazz/Blues competition and worked his way through the heats and into the Grand Final, which was held at Harrigans Irish Pub. Some of us drove up and some went by boat to cheer on our local muso. Even though the weather was atrocious, about 50 of Chris’ followers made their way up for what promised to be an entertaining night.

The venue is absolutely stunning!

Perched on the marina, Harrigans exudes that old-time pub atmosphere with lots of timber, an open fireplace, a great restaurant and a beer garden overlooking the water.

Those that came up by boat had an adventure to rival anything in Gilligan’s Island. Russell took his recently launched 55-foot catamaran houseboat with an allfemale crew. The boat is not quite finished yet so it was lacking a few minor things like a toilet, windscreen wipers, bilge pumps and heating but hey, it’s all good!

On the way up, one of the crew, who shall remain anonymous but is said to be

a seasoned yachtie, noticed the boat was listing to port (left, for all you landlubbers).

Seems the SS Minow was taking on water.

Though it was pelting rain, the water filling the boat wasn’t fresh but salty, so it meant a serious leak!

Just starting to get dark and not wanting to be late for Chris’ performance, Russell ran the boat up onto a small sand bar, rallied the crew into a bucket brigade and starting bailing. 45 minutes later and the boat was finally empty. Phew! Time to head off. Err, think again… The tide had gotten lower so the boat was refusing to reverse off the sand bar. Okay, new plan.

Get the all-female crew over the side and start pushing (you couldn’t write this script!).

They finally made it to the marina, tied up the boat and made a grand entrance into Harrigans looking like castaways.

I’d never laughed so hard in my life! The open log fire was a welcoming sight for the bedraggled Skipper (Russell) and Gilligan (Sammy).

The competition was now underway with 17 finalists each performing two numbers. We have some absolutely amazing talent here on the Gold Coast and every one of the contestants deserved to win, but unfortunately there was only one crown. The place was packed and a hush came over the crowd as the winner was being announced. By this time Gilligan, the Skipper, Mrs Howell (Ethel), Ginger (Debbie) and Maryanne

(Annie) had dried out and had partaken of a few beverages – needless to say, they were in fine form. Here we go: “And the winner is… Christopher Young!” What a deafening roar, as all Chris’ supporters tried in vain to raise the roof off Harrigans.

Party central from there on because first prize was $1000 cash, so guess whose shout it was? Not mine, woohoo! Party on the boat (if it’s still afloat).

Great night, great venue, great mates and copious amounts of fruit of the vine!

It really doesn’t get any better. If you get the chance, Harrigans Irish Pub at Calypso Bay is well worth the experience.

NB: Gilligan and the crew made it back safely to Sanctuary Cove late the following afternoon. The only drama was not enough buckets in the toilet!

When did you decide you would like to embark on this journey? While watching the Tour in 2007. i saw tour operators, Bikestyle (www.bikestyletours.com), and decided to take part in 2008.

How much training did you do leading up to the event? i rode five times a week on the Gold Coast, no more than 75 kilometres, with unfortunately, zero hill work.

What was the general itinerary? Bikestyle provided a comprehensive manual for the 18day trip. This included a local map for each day’s ride in case you got lost. The first page of each ride gave a detailed description of the ‘Tour’s’ ride for that day. Then what we were doing, when we were leaving and if it was from the hotel, or by bus with the bikes in the trailer. What time dinner was, or if we were free to sample the delights of the local restaurants. There was always an easy ride and a hard ride. Some days we did the same ride as the tour. for example, riding from our hotel in lourdes at 7.30am, with a two or three hour ride to the foot hills of the Col du Tourmalet. Then an hour or so over the foot hills to the Col du Tourmalet proper. A very steep 17 kilometres in length, with an elevation from 7.1 degrees to 10 degrees. The July 2012

easy ride was 55 kilometres and the hard one over the summit 130 kilometres. Meanwhile the tour had started around 11am or so from a different start point to ours. By the time i crossed the summit of the Col du Tourmalet the Gendarmes had closed off the road and a few of us holed up in a small village to enjoy buck wheat pancakes and a beer or two, while waiting for the tour to come through.

Sometimes we rode mountains the tour didn’t do; Mt Ventoux was one of these. or rode to the start or finish of a ride. The organisers were very flexible. one day six of us rode to the ancient roman Aqueduct at pont du Gard, instead of the gazetted ride.

Was there a highlight of the trip? So many highlights! Terrific adrenalin pumping rides, beautiful countryside, especially through provence and the Alps. riding to the Ancient roman Aqueduct. Wining and dining most nights in small french towns. riding the time trial the day before the tour.

Was the trip everything you had hoped it would be? Yes, absolutely! Well organised, good guides, great company along the way and beautiful scenery. Most of the guys and a few girls took their own bikes, but as i was meeting up with my wife and daughters in edinburgh for the festival and Tattoo, i hired and it was excellent.

What advice would you give to others who are keen to take part in this kind of adventure? Non-riding partners can ride on the bus and spend time in local markets and

sightseeing; an expensive option, but it adds flexibility. for riders there are easy and hard options, but if it’s preferable to take the hard rides, as most did, a great deal of training needs to be done to gain riding experience and master these climbs.

When did you get into cycling? i have cycled on and off for many years, but taking part in a ten day ride with Cycle Queensland (www.bq.org.au), from Goondiwindi to the Gold Coast about eight years ago, was a catalyst. They organise a ten day, mainly camping ride in Queensland every year. They are very well organised and all levels of cycling are catered for.

Do you think australians should be getting more into cycling and less into driving? Yes! The Brisbane City Council (along with others in Queensland) has provided lots of hire bikes in the CBD and around the city fringe. While they have been slow to take off, i do see more people using them ... There are innovative solutions being looked at in Australia and overseas, such as sometimes having parked cars a distance from the kerb to separate cyclists from traffic. There is still a lot of work to do, but i’d certainly like to see our towns and cities in the future looking more like some Dutch cities, with half the roadway devoted exclusively to cyclists.

Do you have any other adventures planned for the future? Going to Antarctica, by boat up the Amazon river and to Machu picchu in peru, will do for starters!

Getting adequate sleep but can’t function without your morning coffee fix or afternoon sugar hit? feeling continually exhausted should not be accepted as part and parcel of modern-day living, and yet it’s a common problem for many Australians.

Additionally, our reliance on caffeine and sugar is a dangerous blanket solution and further aggravates the downward spiral of exhaustion. if you eat healthily and feel tired, you may find you suffer from associated symptoms such as bloating, constipation, diarrhoea and bad breath. A major cause of these symptoms is a poorly functioning digestive system. Poor digestion and absorption of nutrients can leave you lacking energy as your body becomes deficient in energy-producing B vitamins and minerals such as magnesium and iron. if there’s a problem; there’s a solution, and the healthiest option involves natural treatment - here are ten steps to get you back on your feet and raring to go.

1. Get tested. How long is it since you have had a check-up with your doctor? A standard blood test may reveal deficiencies in key vitamins and minerals such as iron and B12. symptoms of these include exhaustion, cold hands and feet, dizziness and shortness of breath. these deficiencies can have a negative spiralling effect: when we are tired we crave more sugar and don’t feel like exercising, making us even more tired – and the pattern continues.

2. Do you have allergies? Have an allergy and intolerances check with your naturopath – often allergies will make you feel tired without you even knowing it. Allergic reactions are brought on by a variety of factors – environmental, food and drink – but mostly they are brought on by an overactive immune system. identify the triggers of the allergies, and limit contact.

3. Restore your digestive system. Our digestive system is like an ecosystem - if there is a build-up of bad micro-organisms we’re unlikely to be absorbing the full nutrients and energy from our meals. some simple ways to restore balance are to chew food properly to ensure break down and maximum absorption. eat foods rich in good bacteria like natural yoghurt, miso, sauerkraut and kim chee; take probiotics, digestive enzyme supplements or apple cider vinegar in water in the mornings.

4. Rehydrate. When we are dehydrated our blood becomes sticky and thick, which affects the transportation of oxygen around our bodies, in turn impacting the vital oxygen transport to our brains and affecting our mental alertness. sticky blood also puts greater stress on our heart, making it work harder. We will likely crave more sugar and stimulants to give us the energy we lack.

We need roughly 0.33ml of water per 1kg of bodyweight. that’s around 2.15 litres per day for a 65kg person.

5. avoid flat batteries. Adrenal exhaustion may occur as a result of chronic stress. We often associate stress with things like loss, moving house and financial pressure. in reality, stress comes from all areas of our lives.

Dragging ourselves out of bed in the morning and lacking stamina are classic symptoms of stress, but more subtle symptoms can include difficulty in completing tasks and craving sugar or salt. the limbic system in our brain is responsible for telling us if we are under threat or if we need a stress response, the good news is that it can be trained. Often our perception of events can greatly affect our stress response. By developing positive attitudes we can go a long way to reduce stress and gain more energy.

6. Get adequate sleep. Have the lights out by 10pm, get eight hours of undisturbed sleep.

Disturbed sleep results in tiredness, and while we may be able to push through, the more tired we get the more we will crave caffeine,

starchy and sugary foods. Unfortunately from here it’s almost inevitable that the weight will creep on.

7. Decrease sugar and starchy foods. Do you find yourself falling asleep at your desk in the afternoon or unable to concentrate? You may have unstable blood sugar levels. take a look at what you’ve eaten during the morning and chances are you haven’t had enough to eat or you’ve relied on too much sugar.

Although sugar can easily satisfy cravings and re-energise, it diminishes quickly, leaving you stuck on a blood-sugar rollercoaster.

8. Get moving. if you don’t exercise, start.

Getting the blood pumping around the body will get the oxygen moving. this can be difficult when we have digestive issues, but exercise helps digestion – even if it’s a gentle walk. Our muscles are packed with mitochondria, which are the energy powerhouses of our cells.

Building lean muscle will help with energy production – and will also keep us younger!

9. Practice calmness. Often we are in a state of stress without being aware of it. Adrenalin – one of our stress hormones – can put us in a state of constant hyper-stimulation and can trigger feelings of anxiety and panic, making it difficult to maintain a relaxed composure.

Calming practices like meditation, yoga and breathing exercises calm the stress response, in turn helping the flow of energy.

10. Supplement your diet. Many of us eat on the go and miss key vitamins and minerals. supplements, in particular B-vitamins and minerals such as zinc, iron, and magnesium, help to replace the missing nutrients and sources of energy that many of us lack in our diets. if you are struggling with low energy on a daily basis your body may be giving you a clue that it’s time to assess your health and lifestyle.

In today’s modern society, we pride ourselves on cleanliness. We bathe regularly, wash our hands after using the bathroom and cover our mouths when we sneeze or cough. But are these hygienic habits causing us more harm than good?

wenty-first century citizens like to believe we can inoculate ourselves against any illness. And if a shot isn’t available to protect us, we scrub, sterilise, wrap, and deodorise until we believe we’re beyond harm’s reach. But our meticulous attention to cleanliness may not be helping us as much as we think it is. In fact, our squeaky-clean lifestyles just might be contributing to a host of diseases we can’t wash away.

Health care experts for years have been debating the “hygiene hypothesis”, which asks whether we modern-day people are too clean for our own good. In the 1980s, researchers sought to explain why asthma and allergies were growing at striking rates in some parts of the world while only pottering along in others.

The most obvious explanation was that pollutants in industrial societies were making people sick. But then a string of studies found an unexpected pattern: more highly polluted cities in places like the former East Germany and industrial China actually had lower rates of asthma than their cleaner counterparts in West Germany or Hong Kong. The explanation, clearly, lay elsewhere.

Recently researchers asked the same question, and found that our ultra-hygienic ways are actually causing us, and our children, to become ill. But how could this be? Does this mean that we shouldn’t wash our hands? Nor should we cover our mouths when we cough or sneeze? Naturally, this study doesn’t suggest that, however it does call into question the way in which we keep clean.

Society has come a long way in battling deadly diseases and plagues that once had the potential to devastate entire countries.

However, with the emergence of better sanitation, antibiotics, and vaccinations, our latest obsession with sterilising everything in sight has been made easier than ever.

Now, a handful of studies indicate that our recent crusade for cleanliness may have gone too far. Though the evidence is still preliminary, researchers believe our progress in domestic hygiene may be at least partly responsible for increased rates of asthma, eczema, hay fever and allergies, and that it may open the avenue for the emergence of new germs.

There are millions of bacteria, viruses, harmless parasites, and microbes that act as “exercise” to the immune system to help it learn how to fight off diseases and infections.

A January 2009 article in the New York Times explored this topic and the instinctive behaviors babies exhibit when they eat dirt, suggesting this act has helped us evolve and survive as a species. Ingesting the parasites, bacteria, and worms found in dirt reportedly helps children develop appropriate immune regulatory circuits.

Studies point out that not letting children

play in the dirt, and not allowing them to eat food that fell on the floor can contribute to ill health later in life. However, more and more parents seem to be (figuratively speaking) wrapping their children in bubble wrap for fear they may injure, infect or inhale something that may potentially be harmful to their health.

Thomas McDade of Northwestern University in Illinois, US recently lead one such study stating, “Our research suggests that ultra-clean, ultra-hygienic environments early in life may contribute to higher levels of inflammation as an adult, which in turn increases risks for a wide range of diseases.”

The New England Journal of Medicine suggests that children who were exposed early to common household germs and infections were less likely to develop asthma

high levels of toxins, and their immune systems developed the right defensive responses; in cleaner cities, those growing up in meticulously tidy homes were less likely to develop defenses against the toxins - and by extension, more likely to develop asthma.

Dr Liu and his team of researchers found that early exposure to ordinary house dust appears to reduce young children’s chances of developing asthma. The researchers surmised that the children developed an immune response to common bacterial components called endotoxins, which are found in dust and around many animals. “The immune system learns much like our brain learns,” Dr Liu says.

“There’s a tremendous amount of learning in the early years. It’s also possible that there’s a critical period for learning an immune response, and that you may have difficulty catching up later.”

He cautioned, however, that if someone already has asthma, dust would only make it worse.

Some researchers further speculate that, with too few germs or allergens to attack, the immune system turns on the body’s own cells.

But the studies of this autoimmune response have been mixed, says Dr Liu. Even more risky than the overzealous broom are the armies of antibacterial products waiting to invade the kitchen. A recent survey found that nearly half of all soaps on the market now contain antibacterial agents.

Ask yourself: why does Windex need an antibacterial in it? It already has alcohol. At best these products are ineffective, but even if one did work when first applied, as its level of concentration dropped, bacteria could produce strains that resist it.

The war against mess, like other passions of the home, has long had a social and moral dimension. In Australia, after all, “the great unwashed” bear a deep social stigma. As a shower is deeply ingrained into our daily habits, most people would no sooner disclose they had not showered in days than admit infidelity.

In the end, the struggle for a clean lifestyle is a quest not just for hygiene, but also for control – over our homes, families, communities and ourselves. If we cannot control the decline of civilisation in global politics, or even what age our kids decide they don’t like brussels sprouts, at least we can oppress the dirt in the foyer. In this battle, the control freaks may have pushed their advantage a little too far, opening the door for new levels of chaos and squalor. The sloth may appear lazy now, but it never stays down that long.

Forget about protecting kids from germs: those who had older siblings or attended day care before the age of 6 months - both prime sources of filth and infection - were healthier than the ones who didn’t.

Just like our muscles and our brain, our immune system needs to be challenged early in life in order for it to work effectively throughout our lives. The small challenges of being exposed to sick siblings, eating dirt and food off the floor (within reason, of course) all contribute to a child’s healthy immune system.

But with these “helicopter parents” hovering over their kids and raising them in an ultra-clean environment, many scientists have been forced to support the notion that antibacterial agents commonly used in soaps and household cleaners are also killing off more than one-third of the good bacteria that are essential in bolstering immune systems.

According to the National Heart, Lung, and Blood Institute (NHLBI), some scientists believe that this has caused the occurrence of asthma and allergies to increase noticeably in children over the past three decades, with nearly 5 million kids under the age of 18 now suffering from this illness. Estimates from the NHLBI show this is a 75 per cent increase overall since 1980, and a 74 per cent increase in children between the ages of 5 and 14.

Pediatric asthma specialist Dr Andrew Liu says: “What we’re finding is that childhood exposure to infections and certain environmental toxins seems to have a protective effect.”

Faux fringe Immaculate grooming never goes out of fashion and style has everything to do with it. A great way to look sophisticated and on trend this season is to fake the fringe and get out the eyeliner.

The BIGGEST winner Popular Biggest Loser series seven contestant, Brenda Hunt, takes time out to chat to Sarah Blinco about her weight loss journey and life lessons she’s learned along the way.

W

hen i began to research more about the lovely Brenda Hunt, i of course discovered many titbits online images, articles, videos. i paused for a few minutes to watch her story as part of some behind-the-scenes Biggest Loser series seven coverage and i shed a few tears. Here was this extraordinarily nice, relatable, beautiful woman, relaying to the world how she had lost the love of her life - and her chance to have children with him - because she couldn’t get her weight loss issues under control. fast-forward to present day, and Brenda is bubbly, happy and, most importantly, excited about the future. We even joked about the fact that she really is living the contemporary adage, ‘40 is the new 20’!

Brenda grew up in northern New South Wales but has spent the best part of the past decade on the Gold Coast. Her life has changed quite dramatically in recent times, not only because of her stint on The Biggest Loser, but because, as she tells it, when she turned 40 something just tweaked. “it certainly was very confronting being on the show, baring my soul and everything else on national television. i had watched the show for many years and thought, ‘i’d love to do that [the weight loss and exercise overhaul], but not on television with everyone judging me’. it hit me when i was 40 last year, after i’d been through July 2012

so much negative and emotional stuff - who cares at the end of the journey? Who cares at end of journey! No one is going to remember how many times you cried or were in your underwear, they only remember how much you achieve. i told myself, ‘get over yourself and go for it’. it is a maturity that comes with age though. i don’t think i could have done it five years ago, but it was a decision that was all about me; no one else.” effectively the show aims to arm contestants (and viewers, for that matter) with tools that will help them lose weight, maintain fitness and happiness levels by way of education and goal setting. Brenda enthuses that she got everything out of the experience she could have hoped for. “i definitely got to where i wanted to get to with the journey of being on the show. i got my life and confidence back! ... i’m healthier and i’ve continued my training. i’ve lost another 2kg and i’m at my happy and healthy size now. i used to struggle and ache getting out of bed, but now i don’t have any health complaints.”

Brenda adds she has taken her life back, and is loving every minute. “i’m definitely going out more, widened my circle of friends and i’m dating which is very nice. i’m not ready to get serious, i’ve just found myself and am enjoying myself.” on a serious note, today Brenda reminded me of something critical. for many people, obesity has come about because of depression and consequent comfort eating. food (usually the wrong types) is like a drug, and becomes an addiction. like all addictions, users feel negative and worse about themselves and the cycle continues to spiral. exercise and diet are important in overcoming these obstacles, but emotional support is the third key component. “it’s really important to get emotional support as well as fitness. if you can start with the food and also the emotional support, that’s the road to recovery. The thing for me is that i, like a lot of people in the same situation, was in such a negative headspace.

You wake up every day, look in the mirror

and think, ‘how revolting are you?’. This kind of negativity is all day - constant. You walk around angry and bitter at the world - there’s lots of negative stuff in your head ... You need emotional support especially because a lot of people who are overweight are emotional eaters. i overate because i was using food like an alcoholic uses alcohol - to stop me stressing. Carbohydrates in particular make you feel better - they raise serotonin levels in the brain like antidepressants; they calm and soothe you but as soon as those levels drop, you drop again too, and that’s food addiction.”

Brenda’s best advice for those following the same path to a happier life? “remember it is one day at a time. Just live in the day, don’t look too far ahead. if you slip up get back on the horse. Keep moving forward.

Keep living a healthy lifestyle - 80 per cent is diet. exercise accelerates weight loss but you can lose weight by just diet alone. Keep it low calorie, but i still use The Biggest Loser online club (biggestloserclub.com.au). it’s excellent ... it’s like an online food diary that not only adds up calories, but different sections show where you are lacking in vitamins or minerals required for energy, immunity, health ... it’s a really good tool to know where you’re going and that you have the right balance.”

The revitalised Brenda recently scored a new job which meant a move to Sydney, but she affectionately refers to the Gold Coast as one of her favourite destinations and is always excited to visit friends and family here. She’s working hard to save up money to take the trip she dreamed of to Greece or somewhere tropical where she can “actually wear a bikini in public” (according to her profile on The Biggest Loser series seven website), but concludes by telling me that life is good no, great in 2012! “Now i walk around with a spring in my step and i’m happy in my head. i don’t have to try to be positive, it’s there. i tell people to stick with their goals, one day at a time, because the fog does slowly lift and you see life with different eyes. it’s an amazing feeling.”

Love food + love yourself

Negative relationships with food are common, and for individuals dealing with issues such as comfort eating, obesity, anorexia or bulimia, food can cause isolation, depression and at worst, death. How does our relationship with food develop? And if in some sense we’ve lost our way, how do we get back on track so food is something that is not only used to supply the body with fundamental nutrients, but so the fun social aspect might be enjoyed too? Sarah Blinco investigates.

L

ike most, I’ve had to learn over the years how to manage my relationship with food. Fortunately I grew up in a household where we enjoyed good, decent basics for each meal. I was also pretty lucky all along, and up until about the age of 27, my metabolism seemed to be doing its job well, and I pretty much ate whatever rubbish I felt like. Alas, that all changed, but probably for the better, because consequently I had to learn about foods (and exercise) - what I need more or less of to not only maintain a happy, healthy weight (which again, as for everyone, fluctuates all the time) but to maintain overall health and wellbeing.

My partner and I were once very fortunate to experience a few days at Gwinganna July 2012

Lifestyle Retreat. We expected to learn the usual - fitness tips, yoga positions, meditation techniques; what we hadn’t anticipated however was what we gained from their food and nutrition experts. Each meal was a learning experience (as well as a culinary delight), and the sessions spent with experts who explained the psychology of food were so interesting that everyone wanted to grab a pen and take notes! It’s for this reason I decided to consult Caroline Scott BHSc(N&D), one of Gwinganna’s esteemed nutritionists, to provide a little more insight into food and our relationships with it. Caroline explains that our habits - good and bad - are developed when we’re young. “Like any behaviour patterns, we begin to form habits at a very early age.

Early childhood research has suggested many of our behavioural patterns form between 0-3 years of age. Eating, diet and nutrition form an important part of our early learning and are as much at risk of neglect or poor habit forming as any other area of our early learning.

Habits and patterns are generally formed, as the description implies, through repeated episodes. For example, a child quickly associates established routines: bed time is preceded by story reading or a bottle of warm milk. If a food is always introduced to a child with negative associations or if the child is punished with particular foods or rewarded with a certain food type, it will not take long for the association to build in the child’s mind and then be exhibited in behaviour around food.

Children are fabulous mimics at that early age and they will pick up habits from what they see around them on a daily basis.”

With all this in mind, evidently parents need to consider the long-term consequences of their own food choices. Caroline says, “parents/ care givers have the primary responsibility for helping guide children in their care to making great food choices and developing an understanding of their body’s needs regarding good foods for long term health care. this may seem a massive undertaking for many. there is a raft of information available to parents but it is not always easy to follow and there is much conflicting information which can create unnecessary frustration and confusion. I suggest parents keep things as simple as possible and always revert to traditional ways of eating and cooking. Only use foods your grandparents would recognise as food! A couple of great books to read on this include, Michael Pollan’s Food Rules, and Patrick Holford’s Optimum Nutrition for Your Child’s Mind. Showing children where real food comes from by growing some fresh produce in the back yard, or pots of herbs on the back verandah, sprouting seeds on the windowsill, all will help to connect children with real food and its origins, so they do not grow up believing food is purchased only from

a supermarket. Understanding our own habits and behaviours around food can help us recognise the areas we may have inadvertently passed onto our children. Do we consistently count calories, do we restrict certain foods for our fear of how they might change our weight? Do we often comment in a negative fashion around food, for example, “I’m having a naughty treat”, “I know I shouldn’t eat this, but I want to”? If we can attend to these in ourselves first, we will be able to help repair any negative messages children may have picked up on.”

With so much press on ‘foodie issues’ over the past couple of decades, it’s impossible to not know that Westerners in particular struggle with a number of key problems and disorders including (but not limited to) obesity, Anorexia nervosa, Bulimia, Diabetes and heart complications. Caroline advises that there are signifiers individuals (and friends/ carers) should consider when warding off a relationship with food that has become so negative that potential disaster is imminent: “Loss of appetite without any other signs of illness, reluctance to eat with other family members, general social withdrawal or secretive behaviour, general fussiness around food choices and creating rigid rules around the types of food that are acceptable, eating

secretly and disposing of food wrappings to hide food eaten, not telling the truth or being evasive about food consumed, irregular patterns of eating, having excessive attachments or addictions to particular foods.”

Caroline goes on to explain. “Recognising and identifying bad habits is the first step to changing and improving them. Seek professional help early on to gain strategies and tools to quickly and easily create healthier patterns and behaviours. Enjoying a strong and positive relationship with food is a cornerstone to good health and good long term health outcomes. Having a clear understanding of where real food comes from will help with making positive food choices and help to achieve good health outcomes, good weight management and so on. Where to source such information? Liaise with an integrative health practitioner: doctor, naturopath, nutritionist, health retreats, health blogs and websites such as [those run by] Dr Joseph Mercola, Dr Libby Weaver and Patrick Holford.”

Education is power, and to understand how and why your body reacts and craves the way it does can make all the difference between making positive or negative choices that not only affect you (now and long term) but those who are being influenced around you.

It seems so simple on paper, but how can you adopt a healthier relationship with food for you and your family today? Popular Aussie nutritionist and blogger, Dayne Crocker (FromEarthtoPlate.blogspot.com.au) offers these easy solutions:

Having breakfast is the best thing you can do for your health as this essential meal starts your engines for the day and keeps you vital. Add your own fresh fruit (banana, Goji berries, Chia Bran and fresh or frozen berries).

Other great options are smoothies and a scrambled egg with some added spinach, mushrooms and tomato.

Keep it simple with lots of fresh wholefoods - snacks like dehydrated fruit (eg. mango and banana) instead of Roll-Ups, all natural yoghurt with agave nectar for a sweet kick, and veggie sticks with mashed avocado.

Lunch can consist of little stir frys and frittata which can also be from the night before to save time. Healthy mountain bread wraps with lots of fresh salad are also great, remembering to keep it simple with, say, four of their favourite salad ingredients. Get the kids involved with the ‘making lunch’ process so it’s fun, and they can have some input into what goes on.

Convenient options for adults - breakfast time, lunch?

Keep it fresh with an abundance of salads with a lean protein source as this will not only feed your vital force but give you all your daily nutritional needs sustaining you right through to dinner. Change it up daily with different vegetables and salad ingredients so your diet

What’s good to eat at dinner time and what types of food should we avoid so late in the day?

Go for fresh abundant foods like salads, stirfrys, soups and lean protein sources with fresh herbs, spices and lemon, limes and a good quality olive oil for flavour. Avoid highly refined carbohydrates, refined sugars, dairy products like cream and foods with a high GI. Avoid using and drowning your meals in packaged sauces as they contain high amounts of sugars and simple carbohydrates together with artificial colourings, preservatives and flavour enhancers.

What are some great alternatives if you 29

Going for an all-natural dark chocolate that is naturally sweetened and having a square or two is beneficial along with a small bowl of fresh fruit with a dollop of natural yoghurt. If the urge is there for ice cream try an all-natural sorbet, great instead of commercial chocolate bars and full-cream milk ice cream varieties.

What are some healthy alternatives to savoury snacks like chips?

Raw nuts and seeds, dehydrated fruit, wholegrain crisp breads and kale chips from my favourite brand, Loving Earth; Veggie sticks with mashed avocado, hummus, nut butters like almond, brazil nut or peanut butter. these snacks are quick, easy, sustaining wholefoods and will keep you charging through your busy day.

What’s your take on alcohol intake?

When consuming alcohol be aware that it is a toxin and does put pressure on your liver and kidneys. If you are going to consume alcohol, go for organic preservative-free wines, and if drinking a spirit use springwater and fresh lime as a mixer instead of carbonated beverages which contain high amounts or sugar and artificial sweeteners.

Thai Fish Cakes on Quinoa ingredients:

8 160g snapper fillet, bones and skin removed 160g salmon fillet, bones and skin removed 160g peeled raw prawns (shrimp) 2 teaspoons chopped fresh coriander (cilantro) 3 tsp fish sauce 2 tsp sweet chilli sauce 3 egg whites 1 garlic clove, finely chopped 2 makrut (kaffir lime) leaves, shredded Zest and juice of 1 1/2 lemons 1 tbs avocado oil 100g quinoa small handful fresh coriander (cilantro) leaves, chopped

Method:

Finely chop the snapper, salmon and prawns in a food processor. Add the coriander, fish sauce, chilli sauce, egg whites, garlic, lime leaves, zest and juice of 1 lemon and avocado oil. Mix together briefly then shape into 8 patties. Lightly oil a non-stick frying pan and cook the patties in batches for 3 minutes on each side. Meanwhile, wash the quinoa in plenty of cold water and drain. Put in a saucepan with 250ml of water. Bring to the boil and then reduce the heat, cover the pan and simmer for 1012 minutes until all the water has been absorbed. Leave to stand for 5 minutes, and then mix with the remaining zest and juice of the 1/2 lemon and coriander. Serve the fish cakes on a bed of quinoa.

Chef’s tiP: Quinoa is an old South American grain with the best amino acid profile of all the grains. It’s available from health food stores.

Linguine

with roasted pumpkin & avocado pesto ingredients:

150g pumpkin (squash), diced 1/2 tsp trocomare (herb salt) 300g linguine 200g baby spinach 1 red capsicum, roasted, peeled and cut into strips 175g asparagus, blanched and slice diagonally 100g baby button mushrooms 2 tbs lemon juice 1 tbs white balsamic vinegar 4 tbs avocado pesto

Method:

Preheat the oven to 200 degrees. Put the pumpkin on a paper lined baking tray, sprinkle with trocomare and roast for 25 minutes. Cook the pasta in a large pan of boiling water until al dente. Drain and place in a large bowl with the spinach, capsicum and asparagus. Pan fry the button mushrooms with the lemon juice, balsamic vinegar and a pinch of salt and pepper for about 1 minute, constantly stirring until the mushrooms are just tender.

Add to the pasta with the pumpkin and mix together. Add the pesto and stir through until the pasta is coated. Serve with more pesto on top if you like

Tom Yum Soup with Chilli

and Lemongrass Crab Dumplings ingredients:

1 3 litres water 2 corn cobs 1 onion halved 1 lemon halved 4 large tomatoes quartered 2 sticks lemon grass 2cm square galangal 2 cloves roasted garlic

Method:

10 kaffir lime leaves 1 bunch (6) coriander roots and stems 2 tbs chopped chilli 2 tsps coconut nectar 3 tbs tamari 1 tbs fish sauce 1 tbs yellow curry paste 4 sliced Shitake mushrooms 1 tsp tamarind paste

duMPling ingredients:

Combine water, corn, onion, lemon and tomatoes in a pot to create your base stock. Bring to the boil and then reduce the heat to a simmer. In a blender combine lemongrass (tender inner part only, use outer layers in stock if desired), galangal, garlic, kaffir lime leaves and coriander roots. Process until it becomes a fine paste and add to your stock. Add the remainder of the ingredients to the pot and simmer for at least 30 minutes. Remove the corn, onion and lemon from the pot before serving and add finely sliced shitake mushrooms to garnish.

Chef’s tiP: To create a more substantial meal simply add udon noodles to the pot for 5 minutes and serve.

150g fresh crab meat 1/4 tsp chopped chilli Zest of 1 lime finely chopped 1 coriander root finely chopped 1/4 tsp finely chopped galangal 1/2 tsp finely chopped lemongrass (tender part only) 12 Gow Gee wraps

Method:

Combine all ingredients (except the Gow Gee wraps) into a large bowl and mix together well.

Separate your Gow Gee wraps and place individually on a cutting board. Place 1 tsp of mix into a single wrap and press together edges firmly to form a parcel. Continue until all ingredients are used.

Place dumplings into the hot soup for approx. 5 minutes then serve with a garnish of coriander leaves.

London Calling

Eating and drinking is her favourite past time, so this month we thought it only fitting that Sarah Blinco (along with one of her foodie blogging mates, Kristie Welsh) reflect and share some delights of Olympic host city, London.

yes of the world will be on London this month as the highly anticipated Games of the XXX Olympiad officially commence. Around 200 nations from around the globe will be competing in over 300 sporting events throughout the competition; and while the athletes compete, travellers and revellers will be doing what they always do best in the UK - eating, drinking - indulging.

For a long while the region has dealt with a negative reputation when it comes to food, but culinary connoisseurs have been rethinking their stance on British cuisine recently, and I’d have to agree that it’s actually really easy to find delicious fare - and it won’t even break the bank! If you have ever been to London I’m sure you have a favourite find, whether it be a curry house in the back alleys of Brick Lane, a restaurant discovered while shopping up a storm at Westfield Shepherd’s Bush, or a little family owned Italian joint stumbled across near a Tube station somewhere. would be impossible for me to name all of our favourites, but as a nod to the Olympics and our special food issue, I’ve compiled a few of the coolest precincts worth a visit if you’re lucky enough to be heading to this fascinating city in the future.

Meander around Borough Market and you’ll wander over cobbled streets, past delightful old churches, down narrow laneways and within just minutes you’ll be walking by the Thames.

If you want to live like a local, away from the craziness of one of the other larger (although fabulous) markets like Camden, Borough or Portobello Road, add the gorgeous Broadway Market to your Saturday itinerary. Situated in a lovely local neighbourhood in east London, between London Fields (park) and pretty canals, Broadway is brimming with the ‘cool set’ each Saturday. Fresh fare ranges from cheeses, pies, desserts, meat, fish, curries, vegetarian options and confectionary. The

atmosphere is what is really great here too.

On a sunny day it’s easy to spend hours wandering the street market, followed by more hours eating and drinking under the huge old trees of the park or watching the tide carry small crafts along the surrounding waterways.

It’s uniquely London, and if you’re there early enough try the breakfast at Turkish-inspired Ephesus Restaurant - delicious!

Tube stops: Old Street, Barbican or Moorgate Kristie Welsh is a popular personality from our south-east corner, and she was also recently chosen as the coveted The Good Guy’s Home Chef Blogger. She fills us in on the uber-trendy Shoreditch neighbourhood. “Winning a Jamie Oliver inspired trip to London as part of The Good Guys Home Chef Blogger competition was a foodie’s dream come true! Not only did I have the gastronomical pleasure of visiting four of his restaurants - the retro-style Union Jacks, Fifteen, Jamie’s Italian and the stunning Barbecoa (which he co-owns with American chef Adam Perry Lang) – but I also had the pleasure of touring his headquarters.

Jamie Oliver HQ is home to over 200 staff and is situated in the Shoreditch / Hoxton area - an increasingly popular and trendy part of London. His offices are not open to the public (so you will just have to read my blog to find out what goes on there - homechefblogger. thegoodguys.com.au/blog/the-good-guyshome-chef-bloggers-jamie-oliver-inspired-

foodie-trip-of-a-lifetime-to-london/),but you can pose for a photo by the front door and pop around the corner to Fifteen for a delicious meal. Fifteen is well known for its apprenticeship program, set up by Jamie to help the unemployed youth of London to find a better future in the food industry, but there is nothing amateur about it. Stylish, modern decor, impressive wine and cocktail lists and professional, friendly wait staff set the scene.

The food is, of course, top notch. If you’re looking for something more low key though, around the corner from Jamie’s Fifteen is Whitecross Street Market – an open air, smaller version of the very popular Borough Markets. Open Monday - Friday from 11am – 4pm, it’s street food heaven and cheap!

Fresh, tasty food from every corner of the world beckons. There are around 30-40 stalls serving up Thai and Indian curries, pasta, spit roasts, vegetarian fare, Turkish pizza, ‘manwiches’... and then there’s my favourite - Luardos burrito van. There are also plenty of delicious desserts on offer so be sure to pick yourself up a sweet treat afterwards.”

Tube: Covent Garden, Leicester Square, Embankment, Piccadilly Circus There is so much to see, do and love in London... I should have devised a ‘top 20’ list instead. Still, this is a simple, central option because you can easily shop, explore the key tourist meccas and eat! Everything is close by and the choice is almost overwhelming. One gem in particular is Gordon’s Wine Bar (www. gordonswinebar.com). Located just near Embankment tube, head down some steep narrow stairs to a cosy space lit by candles.

It’s almost ‘tunnel’ like - probably not for the claustrophobic - but definitely for those who tend towards old and interesting. The walls are lined with historical newspaper clippings and evidently Gordon’s is the oldest wine bar in London (est. 1890) - well worth a stop for a meal and a glass of wine.

Spirit Declared We speak exclusively to Porsche Centre Gold Coast’s technical expert and face of the Service Department Reuben Roberts about the new Porsche Boxster.

orsche offers five different high performance models, from coupe to roadster and sedan to sport utility, none of which are easily dismissed, as each is capable of shattering the 100 kph benchmark in under five seconds and topping out at over 270 kph.

On one hand, determining the quickest is easy – the newly released 911 Carrera S. the model with the greatest cargo capacity has to be the Cayenne, and the sports car for four, the Panamera makes the utmost sense for the driving enthusiast who requires the room! But on the other hand, how does one determine the company’s purest sports car – the least distilled embodiment of performance motoring and maneuverability? to help answer this question, we spoke to Porsche, Gold Coast’s Service Manager, Reuben Roberts about the company’s allnew third-generation Boxster. after nine years working with Porsche, Reuben says he’s come to love the precision and proud family heritage that has created such a unique motor vehicle. “From the day I started with Porsche the Boxster has been the favourite. there is nothing better than driving and enjoying the open road on a sunny day with the top down and feeling the Gs as you take the winding corners,” he adds. almost two decades ago, Porsche had the world at its feet when it introduced the Boxster Concept. the small silver roadster, with a mid-mounted flat-six and a soft top,

was a big departure from the automaker’s current lineup of the meaty 911, 928 and 968 models.

Hot on the heels of the all-new 2012 Porsche 911, the company has introduced the 2013 Boxster. the all-new and completely redesigned third-generation model is so significantly different from its predecessors that it makes the previous generation upgrades appear rather frivolous. aesthetically speaking, Reuben explains how every panel on the new Boxster has been reshaped; yet the outer shell remains instantly recognisable for what it is. the all-new Boxster does full justice to its predecessors the 356 No. 1 and the 550 Spyder blending style with functionality, tradition with innovation.

Reuben adds the new look is undoubtedly much more masculine too. “there’s an added aggression in the body with the door cut outs and sharper lines through the front bumper air guides,” he says adding, “Enthusiasts will also note the new shape of the headlights, the door-mounted mirrors and integrated rear lip spoiler.”

Meanwhile signature Boxster traits, including the electrically operated pop-up rear spoiler and central exhaust outlets, remain true to their form.

Physically speaking, he notes the Boxster is now “35kg lighter with an increase in overall track of 36mm, wider front and a wheel base increase of 60mm.”

Porsche’s classic flat-six Boxer engines. the new model arrives with a direct-injected 2.7 litre motor producing 195 kW of power in the standard Boxster while the 3.4 litre Boxster S engine is pushing over 232 kW of pure rubberburning gusto. “Both Boxster and Boxster S motors are DFI (Direct Fuel Injected) too, which ultimately means increased horsepower and better fuel efficiency,” says Reuben. a traditional six-speed manual gearbox comes standard, with Porsche’s seven-speed dual-clutch transmission PDk optional. and like the original roadster, Reuben says the Boxster remains rear-wheel-drive for that “true sports car feel”.

“It’s amazing how Porsche can make the handling characteristics this much better “Just when you thought they were at their limits. the electromechanical steering removes all of the unnecessary vibration while still giving you all the feedback that is needed for it to be the sports car we’ve all come to love.”

was one of those people who was never satisfied when I achieved something. I was always looking to achieve the next thing ... These internal goals kept me going, continually challenging myself to go beyond and do something special. Even when people said, ‘You must be happy with your performance’, my response was, ‘no, I made errors in that game’. I’m not exactly what you’d call ‘sporty’.

This was concluded during my very first ‘run’ around the oval in grade one and my athleticism certainly didn’t improve as I grew older. I’m, as my fiancé says, ‘a spectator by nature’. This is actually true - I’m a very enthusiastic, vocal (sometimes loud) spectator! I’m hopeless athletically but excited for others who are gifted in all things active.

Further to this, some of the most inspiring people I’ve witnessed presenting at speaking engagements or writing as columnists have been sports orientated - athletes and coaches.

To be the best, elite sportsmen, women and their coaches are obviously driven, but it’s particularly intriguing when they’re able to transcend the boundaries of their field and motivate others personally or professionally.

Nikki Hudson is one such example, and I’m excited to reflect on her achievements this month because she’s not only an excellent role model, but she calls the Gold Coast home, she’s an Olympic medal winner (timely for July) and she’s been featured in a brand new book, Secrets of Inspirational Captains Revealed.

As you may recall, Nikki is a pretty darn great hockey player. She has enjoyed a world number one hockey player ranking, many medals including a gold for the Sydney 2000 Olympics, and she’s a 16-year veteran July 2012

of the Hockeyroos, one of Australia’s alltime favourite sporting teams. Secrets of Inspirational Captains Revealed says Nikki is “one of the most successful players in the game’s history, she was captain of the national team at the 2008 Beijing Olympic Games, where she became the first person to play 300 games for Australia. In total, she played 303 games for her country and scored 99 goals, before retiring in 2009.”

I won’t spoil too much of the book for you, because my fiancé and I have found it to be an interesting, motivational read brimming with helpful advice applicable to many of life’s challenges. Nikki’s particular story tells of her journey into the world of hockey, the pressures and personal sacrifices she had to endure in order to succeed at the elite level, and how she credits her parents and other strong supporters for guiding her on her path to the top.

Nikki’s story really made me appreciate how much ‘inspirational captains’ (both literally and metaphorically) sacrifice to be the very best in their league. Inevitably they make choices that their friends haven’t made. When they’re training or working at crazy hours of the day, others are in front of the television, at a coffee shop or pub. When injury or barriers cause defeat, instead of retreating they work harder, faster, more determined than ever. When lost for motivation, great captains and leaders visualise goals and seek inspiration from their own mentors. Success is a mindset.

Reading about Nikki made me think of all our athletes over in London right now who have worked so hard to get there - in a physical, mental and financial sense - how excited they must be at this point about the possibilities! It also made me realise that these lessons are important for all of us. What are we hoping to achieve before the end of the

year? What are our goals for the coming few years? How do we reach them? What should we do to motivate ourselves if we are set back along the way? As ‘athletically challenged’ as I may be physically, I’m beginning to see that success requires a universal positive attitude.

Thanks to Nikki I’m inspired to reassess my goals now, rather than waiting until January 1.
