In a word

Hi...it’s a simple word. Two letters, one syllable, and it’s pretty easy to say, right? Wrong. Did you know almost 68 per cent of people admit they don’t feel confident introducing themselves to someone new?

What was once seen as a good neighbourly gesture (often breaking the ice with a delicious apple pie) has now turned into a game of Hide and not Seek as our society’s self-esteem diminishes. That’s where we step in. This issue is all about confidence. We’re here to put an end to the scary small talk and, with the help of a much-needed self-esteem booster, share our top tips on how to master the art of confidence.

Colour psychology also plays a big role in this month’s theme.

Colour affects our daily lives and emotions in more ways than one.

They can lift you up when you’re feeling down, can get your energy levels racing or bring your already hyped up mind back to a calm and relaxed state – sometimes all it takes is a change of a skirt and a bit of lippie to make you feel like a whole new girl! Just when we thought we’d heard the last of Paris Hilton’s so-called “musical talent”, a copy of what was billed as her new single surfaced online, only to be removed just two hours later. The song called ‘Drunk Text’ features Paris speaking in a monotone over a beat from electro duo Manufactured Superstars and was instantly panned by critics and fans alike. Lines like, “If you take the word ‘sex’ and mix it with ‘texting’, it’s called ‘sexting’,” and, “I went out to the club the other night to uh, you know, dance with my bitches,” have led critics to slam the song as “embarrassing” and “immature”.

However, in what may be a quick scramble to save face, a rep for the 31-year-old released the statement: “We can confirm that the video leaked today is not part of

Lindsay Lohan to host SNL March 3, 2012 Live from New York, it’s Lindsay Lohan! The embattled actress is set to host hit US TV program Saturday Night Live this month with NBC officials confirming, “That’s right: March 3rd, @lindsaylohan with musical guest Jack White!! See you then! #SNL #March3rd,” via Twitter.

This will be the fourth time LiLo takes the SNL stage, having presided in 2004, 2005 and 2006, before her career faltered.

Since her first appearance on SNL back in 2004 at the young age of 17, the actress has been through quite a lot, including multiple court appeals and several jail stints. The 25-year-old is currently on probation after pleading no contest in May 2011 to stealing a $2,500 necklace from a Los Angeles boutique. But her court-ordered community service is nearly complete and her restrictions are soon to be lifted, just in time for the show. “SNL! In the issue, the actress opened up about sayinfg, “Looking back, I probably would have listened to and taken more advice from the people whom I admire and would have followed through with it more. My stubbornness at 18 and 19 years old got in the way. During the past five years, I’ve learned that time flies faster than you think, and because you only live once, you have to learn from your mistakes, live your dreams and be accountable.”

Hazel Phillips is back

This month, we chat to multi-talented veteran entertainer Hazel Phillips to retrace the events that have shaped her fascinating life.

I

t was a brief stroll down memory lane on Seven’s Australia’s Got Talent when actress, performer and former TV host Hazel Phillips took centre stage. Her entrance into the familiar spotlight was met with warm affection, and after, her performance received a standing ovation. It was as if her career had come full circle – “I thought, well, as I started with a contest maybe I can go out with one!” she quips.

Hazel dates back to the earliest days of television, appearing in The Search for Miss TV talent quest before TV officially launched in Australia. She concedes she didn’t win the contest but the ones that did have not been heard of since!

She went on to appear in early variety programs including the Revue variety series and the original Beauty And The Beast, which is seen to be where Hazel made a name for herself. “It’s the one thing everyone mentions and I was only in it for nine months, isn’t that funny? Mind you, it was the first show of its type, I think.”

Of course everyone remembers that one famous episode when ‘censored’ was written across the screen. “I always tried to say something original and a bit different to the other girls. I never ever said, ‘oh, I agree with the girls’ because I think it’s boring,” Hazel says with a smirk on her face. “It was a question by a woman who was home-ridden or crippled, it was something awful, and I said, ‘If you’re really stuck in a position like that maybe you have to change how you think about it’ and I was going to say, ‘to find other interests’. But Eric [Baume] said, ‘Oh don’t March 2012

start giving us your stupid ideas’ because I’d given up red meat and I was talking about health foods. Everything went out of my head and I said, ‘Eric, this is my moment to talk and I’m just giving my opinion.’ He said, ‘Oh we don’t want to hear it. Anyway, I’m going to sack you.’ I said, “You can’t sack me, the management put me into this show’. It was like this to-and-fro, then the Producer (Graham McPherson) came down at the break and I said, ‘You can’t put that to air.’

We were going hammer and tongs! He said, ‘Leave it to me.’ They cut the sound and put ‘censored’ across the screen and it created a sensation all over the country.”

Sparking attention everywhere, Hazel was soon offered a contract with The Bramston Show. “Then the powers that be gave me an ultimatum, either The Bramston Show or Beauty and the Beast. So I was kind of forced to drop Beauty and the Beast,” Hazel recalls.

“The Mavis Bramston Show was huge! It was all comedy so it was right up my alley and really interesting because you got to play something different every week.”

Still, it was as the host of the 0-10 Network’s daytime variety show Girl Talk that really put Hazel on the map. “I was the first talk show host in this country - the first one who spoke naturally anyway,” she says.

Running daily for four years, Girl Talk even scored Hazel the TV Week Gold Logie for Most Popular Female Personality on Australian Television in 1967. It was the first time a female had ever won the Gold. In the same year she also won the Logie for Most Popular Female Personality in New South Wales.

In the years surrounding and following, Hazel also appeared in The Barry Crocker Show and dramas including Boney, Number 96, Ryan, Chopper Squad, Until Tomorrow, GP, Brides Of Christ and A Country Practice.

In 1989, Hazel appeared alongside fellow female Gold Logie winners Lorrae Desmond, Pat McDonald, Denise Drysdale, Jeanne Little and Rowena Wallace in the opening number of the TV Week Logie Awards, and since then, she has appeared in every branch of the media - TV, films, theatre, cabaret, radio and journalism, has written, starred and appeared in three musicals of her own, as well as thirty other musicals and several movies.

In the year 2000 she wrote a one-woman show that ran for two hours, tracing the life and times of Marilyn Monroe, entitled Marilyn and Me, which she performed in numerous venues, and has since appeared in several plays for Queensland Theatre Company, including leads in The Circle, Pride and Prejudice, Shakespeare’s Henry V and The Merry Wives of Windsor directed by Geoffrey Rush. Hazel was awarded the OAM in the 2005 Queen’s Birthday Honours for her contribution to television and the entertainment industry and just three short years later she wrote the autobiography Black River Bright Star.

he Gold Coast Arts Centre is hosting a FREE family fun day on Sunday 25 March, 9.30am to 3pm.

And our friend Ash Palmero from Rebel FM is not one to shy away from a challenge.

Preparing himself from the ultimate test of courage and standing up for a well-deserved cause, Ash is set to have his head shaved clean to raise much-needed funds for the Leukaemia Foundation. But he can’t do it without our help!

World’s Greatest Shave is the greatest fun for the greatest cause. Any excuse to have fun is a great idea – and even better if it helps others! From March 15-18, thousands of people will get sponsored to shave, colour or wax their hair to help people with blood cancer.

Ash will shave and host in two locations over the weekend – Saturday, March 17 at Westfield Helensvale 10am – 1pm and Sunday, March 18 at Robina Town Centre March 2012

11am – 2pm – in hopes it will entice more people to follow in his footsteps.

The World’s Greatest Shave raises vital funds for the Leukaemia Foundation’s important work – providing free practical and emotional support to people with blood cancer and their families, as well as investing millions in research – and there are lots of ways you can take part, with family, friends and workmates.

Surfing’s supernova Sally Fitzgibbons reminisces on her days as a star-struck 16-year-old “grom” on the ASP World Tour, and her current status as a headstrong 21-year-old determined to continue her success at the Roxy Pro at Snapper Rocks.

A

gifted athlete from the word go, Australian surfing sensation Sally Fitzgibbons excelled in numerous sports but chose to focus her attention on her real passion, riding the waves. As a kid and throughout her teenage years, this eversmiling mega talent established herself as one of the world’s best up-and-comers, taking out the International Surfing Association (ISA) World Titles and the Association of Surfing Professionals (ASP) World Junior Championship. Surfing seemed like the obvious path for Sally but the decision wasn’t that easy. While her surfing was blowing minds she had also made a name for herself out of the water as a long distance running March 2012

prodigy, representing her state and country at a national and international level. “Surfing was always a part of my life. My three older brothers all surf and my dad. I guess, with the other sports, I just love being active,” Sally says. “[But] when you’re at that age you’re not really going, ‘I’m going to make this my profession, I’m going to be a professional surfer’, so I just kept going until one naturally picked me.”

Sally soon found the possibility of Olympic track medal glory wasn’t enough to lure her away from the ocean and at just 16 years old, she chose to pursue her competitive surfing aspirations. “I really wanted to solely focus on surfing and I never really looked back,” she

smiles.

With her days as a track star behind her, Sally was able to notch more time in the water and her surfing improved swiftly as a result.

In 2008 she hit the World Qualifying Series (WQS) hoping to secure a spot on the 2009 ASP World Tour to challenge for a World Title.

Sally dominated the WQS claiming a string of massive results in the first half of the year to win the series and earn her place on the 2009 ASP World Tour. It’s the fastest a surfer, male of female, has ever qualified for the following year’s competition. Sally’s first year, vying against the sport’s elite, had it’s ups and downs but she still managed a top five finish that included a runner up spot in the final

of the Gidget Pro at Sunset Beach. “I never enter an event to come in second or third, you just really put in all that hard work and effort into the number one spot. But if that doesn’t happen, you always take those losses as well as if you had won the event and you learn from that, and that’s why it’s so special when you do win,” she says.

In 2010 Sally finished runner up to Gold Coast surfing champ Stephanie Gilmore, putting together one of the most consistent campaigns ever, and making the final series of every event on the schedule. Speaking of her competing rival and friend, Stephanie says Sally is the “ultimate athlete”. “She’s got ability to burn, she’s smart and incredibly dedicated.”

It’s the attributes Steph highlights that have since taken Sally to greater heights. last year Sally topped the leader board in Nike US Open World Title event, and reined supreme in the Swatch Pro Hossegor, France 6 Star event, the New Zealand’s TSB Bank Pro World Title event and, back at home, the ASP Rip Curl Pro World Titles.

Now heading into her fourth year as a World Tour surfer, Sally says she’s set for the Roxy Pro at Snapper Rocks and is more than ready to take up the challenge of continuing last season’s winning streak. “It’s the first event of the year for the World Tour season and it was great to have a little warm up event down at the Australian Open and get a win there,

I think that’s great for the confidence,” she says. “I’ve grown up surfing this wave since I was eight, and I always travel up the coast to surf it, so it holds a special place in my heart. I’ve always wanted to win here so you just throw everything at it and try and get that good start.”

But Sally admits it’s not going to be an easy ride to the finish line as she goes up against some great competition. “The reining champ at the moment is Carissa Moore, she’s obviously still in form, and Steph Gilmore, this is her home break so she’s always one to watch.”

Sally also says we should keep a good eye on the young up and comers. “There’s about five new rookies around 17, 18. They’re always hungry and wanting to win.”

Remembering her days starting out in the surfing sphere, Sally says she feels great being someone the youngsters can look up to and ask for advice. “As I get older, it’s always great when someone titles you as a role model especially for the up and coming groms. I still feel like a grom, I’ve just turned 21, so I just look back and go ‘wow, I’ve achieved so much seen so many places around the world’,” she marvels. “I don’t try to enforce anything on the young ones, I just provide opportunities like the Sally Fitzgibbons camp down at HPC, and just lending advice when I can. It’s tough to travel the world at such a young age, so it’s all about learning and hopefully the decisions I

make along the way is what they aspire to do if it’s a good one.”

Sally’s top tip for those seeking the challenge of surfing? Confidence. Having the strength to believe in yourself and not give up.

“That initial stage is always the toughest. If you get out there and it’s not working out, don’t be disheartened. I think starting on a long board is the way to go and as you get better you just shorten your board and shorten your board and you can start doing maneuvers and really just playing with the wave.”

As for us not so coordinated gals, there’s still hope for us after all. Sally may be a pro now, but she admits it wasn’t always the case. “No, I was definitely not a natural. I was pretty bad,” Sally laughs. “When you start anything, you’re just everywhere - your arms, your legs,” she explains, flailing her limbs like a bad rendition of the Hokey Pokey.

“At about [age] 11, my brothers, being brothers, were watching our first ever video footage of all of us surfing and they’re looking at me going, ‘Sal, you’re not really...you’re not very good.’ you suck pretty much!” she quips.

“Then I thought, well, I can either give this up and concentrate on another sport, or I could pick myself back up. I didn’t want to be that sister no one wanted to surf with, so I went, ‘right, I’m going to get good at this’, and I just didn’t stop. And I’m obviously still improving.

i everyone, I trust you’ve all had a great time since we last chatted.

For those of you that took the plunge and had a crack at the internet dating game, were you satisified with the result or was it a bummer? How many of you had your expectations shattered by inaccurate descriptions of the person you dated and how many shattered the expectations of their date for the same reason?

You know, it all boils down to self confidence! I have a very dear friend who was devastated by the break up of a long-term relationship and, for a long time, remained at home feeling sorry for herself. Then one day, she finally snapped out of it and her self-esteem began to skyrocket. Two years later she now has a motorbike licence, a jet ski licence, has done a road trip to Sydney in a convertible and holidayed solo in the Greek Isles.

Confidence personified!

To put it bluntly, she don’t take s#*t from anyone! Girls, dress the way you want to, not the way other people think you should.

I know we’re not all glamorous but we do have other qualities that endear us to our friends. For those of you who seem to take pleasure in putting people down, get a life! A reality check may also be in order because you don’t know how much you’re

hurting those around you and, more than likely, you’re just compensating for your own jealousies and inadequacies.

There’s no such thing as ‘can’t’. Give it a go, no matter what it is. That job you think you don’t have a chance of getting, the guy or girl in the club you think is way out of your league, it’s all up to you. Hey, I crash and burn on a regular basis but it won’t ever stop me from trying! I wasn’t blessed with George Clooney looks (as a matter of fact, i fell out of the ugly tree and hit every branch on the way down) but I do have some redeeming qualities. On the social scene I’ve been out and about and had the pleasure of going to the P.A. Bar at Jupiters Hotel and Casino to watch one of the most outstanding bands I’ve heard in a long time. They’re called Mission X and are fronted by a stunning beauty by the name of Abby Skye. Believe me, this girl can belt them out. You think a chick can’t do Metallica, Nirvana, Rage against the machine? Wrong, wrong, wrong! Not only the heavy stuff but all the latest hits.

Truly the voice of an angel! Remember the name as they play all over Brisbane and the Gold Coast. And if you get a chance, don’t miss them.

I guess we’re all sick of the rain and floods, I know I am because I’m living on a boat! Hopefully the last of it has gone, but

ignore flood signs and try to cross flooded roads. Wake up! It’s not worth risking your life, your loved ones’ lives, your vehicle and, more importantly, the lives of the people sent out to rescue you. You might think you’re 10 foot tall and bulletproof in your jacked up, pumped up, hotted up two and a half tonne Suv or 4x4, but in actual fact it only takes six inches of fast moving water to wash your vehicle away! If I had my way, those who ignore the warning signs should be forced to pay for their own rescue - which can easily cost thousands.

God forbid anyone should lose their life then I would slap manslaughter charges on them without a second thought! Wake up people, don’t risk it!

Make-up Make-up is sooooo important. the colours you use either accentuate or detract. When used in the wrong places: not so good. But in the right places: simply gorgeous! the colours you choose on the day also reflect how you’re feeling. think about it, you’re not going to put red lipstick on unless you feel good, you surely won’t wear pink if you’re not happy, and if you’re really just not feeling into anything (or anyone, for that matter) you’re probably not wear any makeup at all. Big mistake – huge! My point is, colour on your face reflects you, your style and how you portray yourself to the rest of the world.

What’s your choice of make-up? How do you define your vibe? Are you a trend make-up follower?

Winner takes it all The Biggest Loser is a handsdown success for Channel Ten – evidently we all love an underdog story, and to see contestants grow throughout the challenge into happier, healthier and indeed more confident people is truly inspiring. Host and one of Queensland’s favourite daughters, is Hayley Lewis.

L

iving in Brisbane and a mother of two sons, Jacob and Kai, Hayley Lewis is remembered as the 15-year-old ‘girl next door’ who swept to fame in 1990 by winning five gold medals at the Auckland Commonwealth Games. Most recently she’s been back on our living room TV screens as host of The Biggest Loser (TBL), an experience which she says has changed her life. “There are too many positive things to list about being involved with a show like TBL. I never imagined that hosting a reality TV show would impact my life the way it has. I love the fact that I witness people transforming their lives for the better before my eyes. Their confidence and self-esteem increases by the day and to see the majority of them begin on day one with no goals and no dreams for the future and then leave with new intentions and a bright future is amazing.”

Hayley herself has of course come from a history of ‘amazing’ – her 1990 Commonwealth Games win placed her into the hearts and minds of all Australians. Twelve months later, March 2012

Hayley went on to great fame by winning the 200m freestyle World Championship in front of an ecstatic Perth crowd. In 1998 after the birth of her first child, Jacob, Hayley joined forces with Jenny Craig Weight Loss Centres as a key spokesperson, helping her to get back in shape and encouraging other young mothers to do the same in an effort to lead happier and healthier lives.

Following dedicated hard work to get back in top shape, Hayley surprised herself by powering into her third Olympic team with emphatic victory in the 800m freestyle at the Olympic trials in 2000. She competed in the World Swimming Championships in Japan in 2001 in three events – 1500m in the pool, and 5km and 10km in the Open Water, winning a Bronze in the 5km race. Out of the water though, Hayley has embarked on several successful business ventures including her own swim school, she owns and runs a beautiful homewares store, Coming Up Roses, has a range of fitness equipment, was part of the XVII Commonwealth Games television

commentary, has hosted consecutive series’ of The Biggest Loser, and is highly sought after for speaking engagement. In April 2011 she launched her first book, Dream Believe Create. A Woman’s Guide to Small Business. Hayley says of the future: “I still want to fulfil my goal of participating in a marathon every year until I can no longer run. This year will be my third one so that is the immediate sporting and fitness goal.

Commando Steve has set me a goal of achieving 100 sit-ups (starting at one a day through to 100). On a personal note, I want to renovate my homewares store in Brisbane, continue to promote the MySpecialK website and continue to support the Daniel Morcombe Foundation and Missing Persons Week.”

Hayley is the epitome of a hard-working Queensland ‘go getter’ and we look forward to seeing what’s in store next.

Master the Art of How to understand confidence and blend in... in any situation.

i

recently watched the film Crazy Stupid Love – an entertaining (and relatable) flick starring Steve carell as cal, a newly-separated single guy who had no idea how to work a social situation because his confidence levels had completely diminished. thanks to some coaching and encouragement from the very “photoshopped” Jacob (Ryan Gosling), cal did eventually overcome his self-confidence issues which resulted in more enjoyable, positive personal and social interactions. it got me thinking about times in my life where i have struggled to adjust or fit in. to be honest, i was always pretty shy growing up, and even now i much prefer to work a room – at a party or networking event – with a friend. you know, one of those people who seemingly never struggle to find something interesting to say, a question to ask or a joke to tell. Sometimes it’s necessary to forge ahead alone though, and in those situations i am armed with my own set of secret skills and tactics – talk about the other person, ask questions, be interested and engaged. What really affects how we navigate these situations though? What is ‘self confidence’, and is it possible to better develop it, or are we doomed to follow what behaviour we learned as a child from our parents or peers at school?

Peter Richard-Herbert is a registered consultant Psychoanalyst / Psychotherapist with 28-years experience dealing in general anxiety symptoms such as phobias, relationships, depression and sexuality issues. He has counselled thousands of people across the world on a wide range of ‘confidence issues’, including many professionals working their way up the corporate ladder. taking the concept ‘back to basics’, Peter defines confidence as “being comfortable with something - whether it be interacting with people, performing a task such as work, playing a musical instrument or driving a car... that ‘comfortable feeling’ reduces anxiety... if you’re mentally calm and physically relaxed about something, that’s when you’re confident.”

He continues, “confidence in people comes from this process of being mentally calm and physically relaxed about something. this develops in our life from when we’re small – from our parents, and from our environment - where something [a behaviour or practice] is continually around us, and our mind, by the process of ‘reciprocal inhibition’ gets used to it. then we feel mentally calm and physically relaxed about it – we feel comfortable confident - which allows us to do many other things. confidence comes from doing something over and over again, which might be riding a bicycle or being around people, until we’re totally comfortable with the whole thing. once comfortable that is when you’re confident. Developing confidence is all about practicing in situations where you’re not confident.” there are many different theories on what affects confidence as we grow, but most psychological schools of thought argue that we are a mixture of ‘nature’ and ‘nurture’.

Peter explains, “i was taught at college that nervous mothers have nervous children. you have two parts to someone growing up. their ‘character’ – innate DNA, inherited family mannerisms, and i believe to a point, inner thinking as well. then you have the ‘environment’ – that’s how our personality develops. For example, if you’re someone who has had lots of experiences with different countries and cultures, your personality has taken on all those aspects. you’ve learned many different ways of dealing with things, different ways of thinking – you could say someone like that is ‘worldly’ or open minded. if you haven’t had a lot of cultural input then your mental capacity is restricted to your environment and inherited belief systems of family. the influences of your friends when you’re small and when you’re a teenager do have a lot of effect on confidence. if you’re part of a group that is continually reinforcing the idea that you’re inferior – that you don’t have this or that that’s culturally required at that time, then that will affect your confidence. if you have parents who aren’t really confident, who don’t get out there or they’re nervy around new people, then that behaviour is seen, repeated and inherited as ‘normal’... the negative issues people should be aware of are unquestioned devotion to other people’s ideas. What often happens is reality comes in and people realise that their Grandparents’ views were appropriate for 1880, or 1960 or 1990. they’re not appropriate for now because the world is continually changing therefore each individual’s reality is changing all the time. Start to rely on your own thinking – do small things that you know are going to be right and extend from there. Form your own opinions and talk about them... practice and develop your own confidence.”

Peter also points out that in his experience he has found there are two types of ‘confidence’ –‘internally’ based as opposed

to ‘externally’ based. “internally is where confidence comes from your own beliefs, and belief in yourself. For example, for me with my work, i’ve seen so many people over so many years that i’m very confident with my work and the outcomes. My own experiences tell me it’s going to be successful... When you meet someone who has that internal confidence it comes from within and emanates outwards... external confidence is when someone’s confidence is reliant on external factors such as the house they live in, the car they drive, the Armani suit they wear – all the trinkets and toys people accumulate becomes an outward signal to society that ‘i’m successful’. this doesn’t necessarily mean the person is confident inside, just that their confidence is reinforced by the branded trinkets they’ve collected. you can sense this in people.”

With all this in mind then, Peter emphasises that as with anything we want to be good at – or confident doing, practice actually does make perfect. “Practice as much as you can being around people. confidence comes from a feeling of mental calmness and physical relaxedness in any situation. the only way you can build confidence is to actually know something so well that you’re comfortable with it. A lot of people aren’t comfortable in social settings because they’ve actually learned from, perhaps peers in their teenage years, that being around a lot of people can be a bit threatening. For example, you might encounter someone who is a mild verbal bully who will tend to be sarcastic or attack and some people don’t feel confident in those settings. Whereas if they’ve been around people a lot, or read a lot of self help books where they know some techniques to be around [a wide variety of] people – they actually have a repertoire of techniques to deal with people who are criticising or being sarcastic, then people can feel a lot more

relaxed in that situation. Because they’re more relaxed, they’re comfortable, and because they’re comfortable, their confidence will develop because they actually know they can handle those situations when they occur.”

Sarah Blinco meets Amanda Rose - popular Australian radio presenter and commentator on women in business - to discuss whether it really is still a ‘man’s world’ out there in the workforce, and what she thinks we should do about it...

W

hy do you perceive it’s still a ‘man’s world’? Men are often the ones who sign on the dotted line.

They fill boardrooms and take a lot of the risk in both business and in life. Most women still look to or ask a ‘man’ for his advice or guidance in life – that is because it is natural to do so. We shouldn’t change that.

What in your opinion are the main challenges we as women face in the workplace? There are a few challenges for women, the first is a woman’s lack of understanding on how to deal/work with men. Men are simple creatures that like women to ‘help’ them. If we take this approach then we can help men all the way up our corporate ladder. It is smarter to make the males in the workforce your ally and not your enemy. As women like men to be masculine, men like women to be feminine. I am not saying women should be weak creatures, on the contrary they should be firm although still remain a woman. Too many women feel the need to act like a man to succeed in business.

Another issue is that women go off and have children and on their return find they are still in middle management. This is reality. If a man took 5-10 years off it would be a similar story. Women need to either keep their finger on the pulse (with other men in the industry) and contract whilst having children or realise that it will take 5-10 years longer for them to reach the top than a man who hasn’t taken the time off.

Have you ever experienced issues of inequality or challenges as a ‘woman in a man’s world’? Yes. Inequality occurs all the time and in a range of circumstances. There is a definite wall that men have in business and at first this can be frustrating until you master the art to work with them rather than against them. You will always have men that want nothing to do with you, just remember,

there is more than one way to skin a cat. If that particular path (man) doesn’t work (listen or give you a chance) then try another. I have had just as much resistance from women also. Work often being such a competitive environment, I find that women can be harder

Another great tip is to stand there and listen.

You can learn a great deal in a men’s club type scenario from listening. You may find their passion; they may have something in common with yourself or someone you know. Above all, always remember that men want people to do something FOR them.

What’s in it for him? What do you have as a women, knowledge wise or expertise wise, that would make his life easier?

How would you suggest ‘women can help women’ in this man’s world?

Be realistic. Women’s groups are great to share ideas and to learn although it won’t help break through into the ‘man’s world’ so to speak. Stop competing with other women. Look at the males in your life and how their networks could help other women in your life and vice versa.

We all have a male in our lives in one way or the other – we should be sharing their networks, skills and knowledge. Buddy up and go to business events/functions that are male dominated and work the room together if you aren’t confident enough to go alone.

What advice would you give to the aspiring young 20-something girl who is yet to experience these issues? Be professional, be a woman. Find someone you admire in business and watch them/ follow them in the news etc. Know what you are good at and then don’t be afraid to approach men at functions or just in general and ask them to give you a go.

he influence of colour affects our daily lives and emotions, more than we realise on a day to day basis. We all react to colour in various personal ways. What can be a calming colour for one, may be a stressful colour for another. to colour. I for one am not a ‘red’ person - I am more likely to pick a blue or green of any shade because I react better to these colours within my home.

The success of a colour scheme relies upon colours that are in complete harmony with one another. The design of a room that complements its colour choice is purely an interpretation that is inspired by many

It is instinctive for us to identify with our surroundings and feel comfortable within our own space. Therefore our home is a place where we are most likely to allow ourselves to express personal style and colour. It becomes a space where the only limits are that of your own personal tastes.

Some Tips on Colour & Design 1. Don’t be influenced You need to feel comfortable about the decisions being made. Don’t follow trends if you don’t want to, try to find what you love and let that be what influences your design.

2. Try before you Buy Light does affect how a colour appears on walls. Light changes through out the day, thus changing the appearance of a colour. Buy a sample pot first and see if you can live with the colour you’ve selected. The best way to see a colours true undertone is to paint it out on an A4 sheet of paper and place it on the wall you want to paint, then during the day see how you react. The same applies to fabric and flooring, bring a sample home and see how it looks in natural light and evening light.

3. Paint or Furnish First Have a colour in mind, but remember, paint comes in all shades of the rainbow. So by choosing your flooring, upholstery, fabrics and textiles first, you then can set the mood for what paint colours will compliment the atmosphere you are creating.

4. White or White?

Not all whites are white, look for dark and light shading, undertones and light responses.

Remember too much stark white can be damaging to the pupil. Again get a sample pot and test the colour on the wall.

5. Does everything have to match?

No! The only rule you need is to follow the “Colour Family” and stay within the texture guidelines. Decide on your favorite pieces work around them and remove the rest.

6. Strong colours & where to use them Strong colours bounce off walls, often creating a non-relaxing feeling. Entrances, hallways, landings or areas where rooms are being linked together, do well with strong colours, as they are rooms we pass through. Keep to your cooler calming colours in rooms where you relax.

7. How to find your Style?

Remember the times in your life when you did something special, like a trip that had beautiful views, smells etc or think of things that make you happy, comfortable, anything that had an effect on you. Use those elements to create that same feeling in your home.

Start a collection of things that appeal, inspire or move you. Think of how you like things placed; Symmetrical or Aymmetrical?

8. What to do once you found your style?

I’ts time to shop! Have fun when you are looking for particular pieces or colours.

Sarah Blinco explores the true benefits of positive thinking and the resultant impact self- -confidence.

W

e’ve heard it all before – ‘think positive’, ‘don’t be negative’, ‘things will look up’... but what does it really mean to adjust your thought pattern so that (within reason) most of the time you do, as the song goes, look on the bright side of life?

Further to this, does thinking in a positive manner actually boost self-esteem and confidence levels?

The difference between consistently thinking ‘it will never happen’ and ‘it will happen’ has a huge impact on individual happiness and subsequent self-confidence levels as you move through life.

If you’re constantly: • Thinking down a negative thought line on a daily basis • Doubting yourself • Finding yourself involved in negative conversations about ‘how bad things are’ • Feeling down, bored or unhappy with what you’re doing at work or within your daily routine...

It’s possibly time to assess whether a change in ‘thinking practices’ is required. Healthy self -esteem is quite reliant on positive thinking, and while it’s not necessarily advocated that Jim Carrey’s version of Yes Man is ultimately ideal for changing your life and luck, there are ways to gradually manoeuvre the mind towards more successful, happier and at the risk of overusing the word in this feature... positive outcomes .

Adele Spurgin is a Neuro Linguistic Practitioner and owner of Backintodating.com (“a home study system that gets prospective March 2012

daters high on confidence”). She works to improve confidence levels for a wide range of clients on a daily basis, and emphasises, “What we think (our thoughts), becomes our words (say), and what we say defines our actions or outcomes”.

She explains a little more on ‘positive thinking’: “Imagine you need to cross the road, and you have high heels on. As you start crossing the road you notice a bus coming towards you, at the same time your heel snaps or gets stuck and you face the oncoming bus.

• Negative thinking = ‘The bus is going to hit me and I am going to die’.

• Positive thinking = ‘Oh, a bus, I will be okay, nothing will happen to me’.

• Optimistic thinking = ‘Hummm, I’ll be good, once I get going and move out the way’.

It’s all perception Positive vs. Negative perception = Two kids grow up with an abusive, alcoholic father who ultimately ends up in prison for heinous crimes.

Years later the eldest son goes on to become a very wealthy successful businessman, and he mentions, ‘well with a father like mine, what else do you expect?’

The other brother, with the same upbringing, years later goes the same route as his father.

He ultimately says to the other brother from prison, ‘well with a dad like ours what else did you expect?’

Adele’s ‘think positive’ strategies...

1) Start saying it the way you want it instead of the way you don’t want it. e.g. I don’t want to be sad anymore. Brain hears – be sad.

Instead start to say, ‘I want to feel happy’ (brain hears ‘be happy’).

2) Notice the type of questions you ask yourself – ‘why’ questions tend to be quite unhelpful. Instead start asking ‘how’ questions, such as instead of ‘why is this happening to me?’ try ‘how have I overcome such a scenario before?’

3) Come from a physiology and psychology of excellence – slump over and put your head down and sulk… can you even try and feel upbeat? Now stand tall, shoulders back and breathe deeply. Feel the difference.

4) Start with the end in mind – always know what it is you are working towards. What is your end goal? Remember to say it the way you want it and your mind will then activate its Reticular Activation System and start showing you the way to achieve that which is your ‘end in mind’.

5) Change your deletions, distortions and generalisations – we are all guilty of doing the first three every day, and virtually all the time.

It is how we make sense of the world around us. Two million bits of information are thrown at us every minute, of which we filter out a handful of stimuli down to 136 pieces. Then our brains filter out (via beliefs, time, space, matter, values and past experiences) a further

chunk of information and we process only about + - seven pieces of data. Therefore that which we experience is only a fraction of the information available to us. Through various NLP methods we broaden our experiences to allow other chunks of information through, thus shaping a different reality for ourselves.

As you can imagine ‘positive thinking’ when and where possible in life, is obviously good for self-confidence as all of the points above influence thought, which in turn influences our words, which influence our actions.

nnette Sym was a chubby child, cuddly teenager, buxom bride, and an obese adult with the embarrassing high school nickname "Porky". She was a self-proclaimed “jolly fatty” but often found herself crying on the inside, desperately seeking to be like everyone else. “I did lose weight occasionally but was never able to keep it off,” says Annette. “Weight always seemed to find me.”

On her wedding day, Annette weighed 85kg but after falling pregnant the baby weight never seemed to diminish. “I got bigger and bigger, and more insecure about my size,” she admits. “Looking in the mirror would reduce me to tears. I didn't recognise the fat, round, unhappy face staring back at me.”

Then one day, Annette received a real wakeup call in the form of a photo in the mail.

“This was the turning point for me. My best friend had been visiting and had sent me her holiday snaps. In amongst them was a photo of me at Mooloolaba Beach, Australia, walking out of the water. It was horrendous! I weighed 100kg, all squeezed into my bulging swimming costume,” Annette explains.

Staring at the photo, she sat down and wept. “I was only 37 years old!”

In an attempt to find support, Annette joined a weight-loss group. “I knew that all the quick fixes I had tried in the past, such as pills, salons, meal replacements, pre-packaged foods, hypnosis etc. were a waste of time.

I needed a new approach,” says Annette.

“I decided to forget dieting and looked into March 2012

the health aspect of food. I came to the conclusion that if I was healthy, the weight would come off by itself.”

Annette immediately cut salt, caffeine and alcohol out of her diet, replacing them with healthy meals and snacks more frequently.

She also started walking and drinking lots of water. “That's how my love affair with low-fat recipes began,” she says. “It took me about 20 months to lose 35kg and, to be honest, there were a couple of times I felt like giving up.”

Seven weeks into the program, the novelty had started to fade and hunger was taking over. “I remember saying to myself, ‘well, if people don't like me as I am then that's their problem’. But then I wasn't being honest with myself. I knew this wasn't about other people and what they thought, it was about me and I didn't want to be fat anymore.”

At one point, Annette was 10kg from her goal weight. “I came into a time of complaisance which lead to lost motivation and desire to lose weight. What I did to overcome this was a bit strange, but it really worked and I would suggest to anyone struggling with weight loss to give this a go.”

Annette found a picture in a magazine of a slim, toned woman wearing jeans. “I so wanted to be able to wear jeans, as I hadn't had a pair for many years,” she says.

After rummaging around for a photo of herself, Annette cut out her face in the photo and stuck it over the picture of the woman

wearing jeans. “Instantly, I had a positive visual that made me feel like I wanted to keep going and lose those last few kilos. I wrote under the picture: ‘Just do it, Annette’, and on another piece of paper I put 10 strikes.”

Each time Annette lost a kilo, she crossed one strike out. “As you know, I did reach my goal weight and 19 years on I am still there,” she smiles. “Believe me, it wasn't as hard as I thought it would be and I now think and act like a healthy person. My new healthy lifestyle has taken me from size 24 clothes into size 12s.”

Now, as Australia's most successful selfpublished low-fat cookbook author, Annette has kindly shared a few recipes from her range of Symply Too Good To Be True cookbooks to set us on our own journey to looking and feeling better than we ever have before. “The concept really works, which is why I decided to share my recipes with others,” she says.

“The reason I'm sharing my story with you is to show that we all have good and bad moments and with the right attitude you can achieve anything. Don't give up on yourself, just remember we all have times when we feel down and want to give up but whatever you do, don't. If I had given up I wouldn't have my several pairs of jeans that I love to wear and a life filled with so much joy and abundant health. My advice is to give it a go! What have you got to lose but those kilos?”

Fish Alaska

from Symply Too Good To Be True Book 6

Ingredients: 1 tablespoon (15g) Flora Light® margarine 1 heaped tablespoon plain flour ½ cup skim milk ¼ cup white wine ½ cup shallots chopped 1 tablespoon fresh parsley chopped 1 x (170g) can crabmeat drained Pepper 4 x 120g boneless fish fillets Cooking spray 1 cup 25% reduced-fat grated tasty cheese Method: To make sauce: Melt margarine in medium size saucepan, stir in flour with a whisk. Slowly add milk to saucepan, stirring constantly to avoid lumps. Add wine, shallots, parsley and drained crabmeat.

Mix well. Add pepper to taste.

Cook fish fillets in a non-stick frypan that has been coated generously with cooking spray turning once. Once cooked, place fish on a flat baking tray that has been coated with cooking spray, spoon sauce evenly over each fillet. Sprinkle ¼ cup cheese over each piece of fish. Grill until golden brown.

Indian Tikka Chicken from Symply Too Good To Be True Book 6

“Indian food is traditionally very high in saturated fat so you will rarely see me in an Indian restaurant. Having said this, I love the flavours of Indian cuisine and instead enjoy recipes like this at home. I serve this curry with Basmati rice and a side salad. It is one of my top 10 favourite meals,” Annette Sym. Ingredients: 500g skinless chicken breasts 1 onion cooking spray 1 teaspoon crushed ginger (in jar) 1 teaspoon crushed garlic (in jar) 4 tablespoons Tikka Masala curry paste 1 teaspoon salt-reduced chicken stock powder 1 x 400g can no-added-salt chopped tomatoes 1 x 375ml can evaporated light milk 1 teaspoon cornflour 1 teaspoon imitation coconut essence ½ cup (10g) fresh coriander leaves Method: Cut chicken into bite sized pieces. Peel and cut onion into quarters then slice. Generously spray a non-stick frypan with cooking spray and sauté chicken, ginger and garlic for 3 minutes.

Add onion and toss with chicken cooking for a further 2 minutes.

Coat chicken with Tikka Masala paste then add stock powder and canned tomatoes. Combine well. Once boiled, reduce to a slow boil until chicken is cooked through. Mix evaporated milk with cornflour and essence. Add to pan with coriander leaves and mix well. Once sauce has boiled, serve.

Baked Cheesecake

from Symply Too Good To Be True Book 3

Ingredients: BASE 15 arrowroot biscuits 3 tablespoons skim milk Cooking spray

1 tablespoon lemon rind 3 tablespoons fresh lemon juice 1 teaspoon vanilla essence ¾ cup sugar 2 egg whites 1 whole egg 3 tablespoons plain flour

FILLING 1 x 500g tub low-fat cottage BERRY SAUCE cheese 1 x 425g can mixed berries 1 x 125g packet Light 1 tablespoon cornflour Philadelphia® reduced-fat cream cheese Method: Preheat oven to 160ºC fan forced.

To make base: In a food processor crumble biscuits, add milk and blend together. Coat a 22cm spring-based cake tin with cooking spray and press biscuit mix onto base using the palm of your hand.

Refrigerate whilst making the filling.

To make filling: Clean food processor bowl and add cottage cheese, blend until very smooth, add cream cheese and blend. Put in rind, lemon juice and essence blending ingredients. Slowly add in sugar until dissolved. Add egg whites and egg and combine with mixture, add flour. Once combined pour mixture over biscuit base. Bake for 1 hour. Gently release edge of tin to loosen cake away from edge, this may help stop cracking as it cools.

To make sauce: Place both ingredients into a small saucepan and bring to boil, stirring continuously. Leave to cool. Pour sauce over each slice of cheesecake.

Kev gets a voice K

evin Rudd’s fiery outburst that was caught on camera and has since gone viral has become the centrepiece of an iconic Gold Coast attraction.

The Haunted House in the heart of Surfers Paradise has kept pace with the current tumultuous political climate, by adding an updated voice recording to its giant Kevin Rudd installation.

The Big Kev was first installed when Kevin Rudd was Prime Minster and features a three-meter tall caricature face of the country’s former leader.

Visitors to the spooky attraction can crawl through Kevin Rudd’s mouth, inside the lungs past the beating heart, squeeze through the stomach and around the organs and continue out of the body. With the added background vocals of Kevin throwing his now infamous dummy-spit, you get a light-hearted taste of Australian politics.

Haunted House CEO Alfie Schmid says, “We like to keep the attraction topical and eccentric. We don’t think Kev will be offended, let’s face it, Australian politics has been wetter than the Queensland summer. You have to have a laugh at the lighter side of it all.”

The Haunted House was opened in Surfers Paradise on Halloween in 2007 and is owned and operated by Dracula’s on the Gold Coast.

Why we love her, and what she can teach us about how to achieve self-confidence.

I

’m going to be honest with you – I love Oprah. I think she has built such a clever, inspiring media empire but also attempts to use her power for good. Sure, her top rating talk show, magazine, new television network (OWN) and spin-offs in every industry imaginable rake in the moolah; but it’s her charm I love – her inspiring words and ability to engage.

Where did she hail from, and how did she come to be the epitome of confidence we’d all love to exude? Oprah was born in 1954, the same year that the US Supreme Court’s Brown v Board of Education of Topeka decision ended racial segregation in American public schools – perhaps indicative of Oprah’s future impact on culture and change? She worked tirelessly through the ranks in regional media roles before eventually making her way to the major media hub of Chicago where she had the opportunity to host her own morning show in 1976. Ten years on she had indeed begun to make her mark on society and the international entertainment scene, having already received Golden Globe and Academy Award nominations for her performance in The Colour Purple (1986). Just two years later Oprah was named People’s Choice Awards’ Favourite Talk Show Host and was by then already a household name in the Western world.

She has had years of highly publicised personal, professional and philanthropic success, but it wasn’t always smooth sailing

for Oprah. Her background was difficult: sexual abuse as a child, and even a long lost half sister who she never knew existed until around a year ago. Discussing ‘self help’ tools that assist in developing confidence is something Oprah has covered many times because ‘confidence’ critically impacts on how we relate to others, how we fit in at work, social networks and family interactions. On her site, oprah.com, the woman herself says: “It is confidence in our bodies, minds, and spirits that allows us to keep looking for new adventures, new directions to grow in, and new lessons to learn.

What I Know for Sure: Find the flow and follow it. You can’t go wrong… Moving with the flow of life has given me supreme confidence because I know there’s a Power greater than I, a natural rhythm to things that is a force beyond my own. I trust it and believe that no matter what, I will be okay. I know for sure that this is the ultimate in confidence. I know that I am more than my personality, my body, and my body image.

Life is huge, more expansive than we can feel or imagine. Even in my deepest meditation or moments of profound awareness, I can only connect with a fraction of all that is alive.

Whenever I find myself in a difficult situation, I’m reminded of a line from a Maya Angelou poem called Our Grandmothers: ‘I go forth / alone, and stand as ten thousand’.

I think of all who’ve come before me and had to endure trials that would level most of

us in our urban comfort zones, and I realize I’m not the first person to face big challenges.

This has been done before. I can do it again, maybe even better.”

While most of us can probably not expect to accumulate this kind of wealth or influence, perhaps we can at least try to take a leaf out of Oprah’s book – be yourself, smile, go out into the world proactive and confident about what you would like to achieve.
