PORTLAND, OR

MENDOZA | MALBEC | MOTHERHOOD| M eet Cr istina Gonzales of Gonzales Wine Company in Por tland, OR - whose passion for wine began while backpacking through South Amer ica in 2001 and landing in M endoza, Ar gentina, the epicenter of South Amer ican M albec. A per fect M albec paired with an Ar gentinian steak was the spar k that led her down the winemaking path that eventually led her to establishing her own wine br and. Adventures wor king har vests in Califor nia, Oregon, Tasmania and Austr alia, along with wor king numerous roles at sever al winer ies gave her the hands on exper ience to follow in her family's entrepreneur spir it to make a better life for her self and her son. This woman wants to live passionately, while encour aging ever yone, especially women to believe in themselves and their dreams. She's a single mom. She's a winemaker. She's an entrepreneur. She's a Woman in Wine that we think you should get to know.

Here's Cristina's thoughts on Entrepreneurship ....

What was your inspir ation for becoming an Entrepreneur and taking the twists and tur ns that come along on this road? Initially, I just really wanted to craft my own wine and see if I was any good at it! I had always had the desire to make a Malbec that was a homage to where my passion for wine came from which was Argentinian Malbec and something that was

different from the grape varietals that I had been working with. As time has gone on and I've gotten older/wiser, being an Entrepreneur has taken on a totally different meaning. Now, being an Entrepreneur means living a meaningful life where I decide my schedule and how to divide my time, while also pursuing my passion and producing a product that is made with intention and that I am proud to put out in the world. How do you j uggle per sonal life with business life? This is something I still struggle with but as time goes on, I am learning that it's important to dedicate time everyday to attend to business matters and self-care. Creating a morning ritual/routine is what I'm working on now. I try to keep work to just weekdays but as a business owner, everyday is a work day. So, if that just means answering back some emails or getting a wine order prepped on the weekend, that's what I have to do to keep my business running. But I try to balance that out by doing something for myself GIRLSGONEGRAPE.COM

SIPONLIFE.COM

everyday whether it be walking my dog, watering my garden, or just eating 3 meals a day! Self-care isn't just bubble baths and pedicures, it's simply doing something for your well-being. What spar ked Gonzales Wine Company? Gonzales Wine Company started pretty much the first year I made my own Malbec which was in 2009. It came out so damn good that I knew I could start my own wine brand. I've always been a very ambitious person, so immediately, I just began to talk to people who already had their own wine brand and began the process to create my own wine label. I really had a desire to make quality Malbec that was affordable and I come from a family of entrepreneurs, so it was just in my blood to start my own business!

What do you find is the most challenging for you in the wine business and where do you feel being a woman has its advantages

in this business? The most challenging thing that I find right now in the industry is that there are so many wine brands out there and how do I set myself apart from the thousands of other people making wine out there right now? The way that I am finding to do that, is to own my story of how I got into the wine industry and step into my power as a woman winemaker. This is also where I feel being a woman has it's advantages in the industry right now. Women have always been an integral part of this industry from day one but now we are getting the recognition that is long overdue and we now have a women's movement within the industry where women are empowering each other and working together to create change and equality within the industry. It's a great time to be a woman in wine! You wanted your business to give back and have chosen Gir ls I nc. to par tner with...can you share why this or ganization speaks to you and how your wines play a role? There are so many great things about this organization that I love! The biggest thing that speaks to me is that they teach girls to value themselves and develop their strengths. I think this is something that many women struggle with; our own self-worth and value. Honoring self-worth and building on their strengths gives these girls the power and confidence to pursue science-based careers and roles in leadership and we need to see more women in these roles. 5% of the profit from every bottle of my 2015 Cedar Lane Vineyard Syrah goes to support Girls, Inc.

Right now, I'm reading The Essential Rumi, translated by Coleman Barks. I love poetry and his words and wisdom speak to me on some many different levels and have helped me understand my own heart and mind. I'm a huge foodie, so Bon Appetit is my "go-to" magazine that inspires me to make new dishes and gives me new ideas for food and wine pairings. There are so many good podcasts out here! Right now, I subscribe to Wine for Normal People. Tara Brach, Strong Babe Collective, TED Radio Hour and Inside Winemaking. How impor tant do you feel social media is in today's business plan? Social media has played a huge role in my business in the last 2 years. My business has grown exponentially due to my presence on social media and I am really grateful for that. That being said, it's also a matter of balance. Social media can be a serious time-suck and like anything, needs moderation but I do believe that businesses need to have a social media platform to engage new customers, especially those of younger generations.

What books, magazines or podcasts are cur rently inspir ing you? GIRLSGONEGRAPE.COM

What do you wish you had known at the beginning of this j our ney that you had to discover the har d way? Never let anyone control your money. Never be afraid to ask questions when it comes to finances. You always have a right to know how your money is being used and for what.

What is the most challenging for you as a business owner and what resources, if any, do you use to help with those challenges? The most challenging thing for me right now is being able to find the time to go out and make sales calls. I juggle three jobs and have a 5 year old. So between all of that, it doesn't leave me much time to get out and "hit the pavement". I'm lucky enough to have a wine broker in Southern California who represents my brand and I do have an online store on my website but that's not enough, like any business, you need to keep moving your product. So now, I'm looking into other resources available online and associations that focus on

small producers that I have recently been introduced to and will be utilizing. Many times, it comes down to talking to other producers and sharing ideas and resources. Give us a golden nugget of something you believe ever y woman should know when she takes a leap into her passions to design her life, on her ter ms? Where do you see your self and Gonzales Wine Company in say, the next five year s? In 5 years I will be producing 1500-2000 cases annually where the business is sustaining itself comfortably and I am able to pay myself an income that provides for my son and I. ?In California, where the wine industry is of comparatively recent growth (a mere 200 years), really thrilling changes are taking place.? ? Harry Waugh, 1969

On May 24, 1976, at the InterContinental Hotel in Paris, France, a blind wine tasting competition was held that included wines from France and California. Little did anyone know that this event would send shockwaves through the world of wine and propel the United States wine industry (specifically those wines from California) into the global market like a bottle rocket! This iconic event was a huge triumph for the United States wine industry and is one of the reasons that we are enjoying California wines today! The M an Behind the Vision Steven Spurrier was the owner of both the Caves de la Madeline wine shop and AcadĂŠmie du Vin wine school in Paris, France. In 1975, Spurrier had learned that the United States was planning exciting patriotic events in the upcoming year to celebrate the bicentennial of American independence. Spurrier and his colleague, Patricia Gallagher, thought it would be fun to host a tasting of California wines in Paris. But, this was not to be just any ?ole tasting. This event would be a blind tasting competition between the iconic and world-famous wines from France verses the unknown wines from California. Little did Spurrier know that this idea would rock the world of wine! ?No matter how fine an average American wine might be, the American snob does not praise it highly, for fear of being thought naĂŻve, or even, chauvinistic? There are two ways to cope with wine snobbery. One is to compare wines with their labels hidden? The other way is to send American wines to Europe and challenge the imports on their home ground.? -Leon D. Adams, The Wines of America, 1973 The L ine-Up This event brought together esteemed wine judges from France to judge the finest French wines against the best (yet unknown) California wines: White wines from Burgundy,

France vs. California Chardonnay and the Grand Cru?s from Bordeaux, France vs. California, Cabernet Sauvignon. The famous white wine roster included six California Chardonnay wines (Chalone Vineyard, Chateau Montelena, Freemark Abbey Winery, Veedercrest Vineyards, David Bruce Winery, and Spring Mountain Vineyard) and four white Burgundy wines (Bâtard-Montrachet Ramonet-Prudhon, Beaune Clos des Mouches Joseph Drouhin, Meursault Charmes Roulot, and Puligny-Montrachet Les Pucelles Domaine Leflaive.) The famous red wine roster included six California Cabernet Sauvignon wines (Stag?s Leap Wine Cellars, Ridge Vineyards Monte Bello, Heitz Cellars Martha?s Vineyard, Clos du Val Winery, Freemark Abbey Winery, and Mayacamas Vineyards.) The French roster included two First Growth wines, Château Mouton-Rothschild and Château Haut-Brion (see the March and April 2019 articles for further details) along with Château Montrose and Château Leoville-Las-Cases.

?In five or ten years, when the wines have been properly matured, I?m sure the French red wines will do much better.? ? Michel Dovaz On June 7, 1976, George Tabor, the lone journalist in attendance, published his account of the tasting in a four paragraph Time Magazine article entitled, ?Judgment of Paris.? The perfect summation of the event was the last sentence of the first paragraph, ?Last week in Paris, at a formal wine tasting organized by Spurrier, the unthinkable happened: California defeated all Gaul.? The After math Why was this event significant to the world of wine? Stay tuned for next month?s article? !

And They?re Off The tasting was blind, thus the labels were covered. Of course, there was no doubt that the French wines would easily win. Only one journalist bothered to show up that day, George Tabor with Time Magazine. Mr. Tabor knew he was witnessing something special when the French judges couldn?t discern which wines were from France and which were from California. ?We though we were recognizing French wines, when they were California and vice versa. At times, we?d say that a wine would be thin and therefore California, when it wasn?t. Our confusion showed how good California wines have become.? ? Dubois-Millot (Wine Judge)

The Shockwave Felt Around the World The ballots were collected and the scores were calculated. What happened next was equivaent to the finale of a fireworks show. Both the winning white wine and red wine were from (gasp)? California! First place in the white wine competition was awarded to Chateau Montelena, 1973. The winner of the red competition was awarded to Stag?s Leap Wine Cellars, 1973. According to Tabor, ?When he finished, Spurrier look at the judges, who reaction ranged from shock to horror. No one had expected this, and soon the whole room was abuzz.? The French judges were aghast and some even began making excuses, ?French wines develop slower than California wines because of the climate, so the test was not completely correct.? ? Pierre Tari ?It was a false test because California wines are trying to become too much like French wines. ? ? Odette Kahn GIRLSGONEGRAPE.COM

What?s I n M y Glass? In keeping with the patriotic theme, I decided to choose a sparkling wine from Napa Valley, California, USA! Tonight, I am enjoying the crisp, beautiful & elegant Domaine Carneros, Brut, 2014. Domaine Carneros identifies itself as, ?Noble French Heritage with Pure Carneros Verve.? The Chateau in Napa Valley was founded by the Tattinger Champagne Family, coincidently one of my favorite producers of Champagne in France. This sparkling wine is produced in the traditional method, meaning that the wine has undergone a second fermentation in the bottle.

Zin ke Gr en ach e Paso Robles 2016 | Sipped at Or igin s Win e Bar & Wood Fir ed Pizza, Lovelan d, CO | Produced by Zinke Wine CO. CA

Almost entirely Paso Robles fruit, this wine sales back the raciness and in your face style that Paso is so known for. It's still full bodied and elegant with soft red fruit, rose petals on the nose and a mouthful of rounded silkiness. It's 80% Grenache and 20% Syrah. It's delightful!

Zin ke Syr ah Cen t r al Coast 2016 | Sipped at Or igin s Win e Bar & Wood FIr ed Pizza Lovelan d, CO | Produced by Zinke Wine CO, CA

A rich, opaque purple colored wine with aromas of blue berries, cocoa nibs and green pepper. The palete notes ripe blackberry that integrate with Northern Rhone Syrah characterisitics of tar and licorice. Medium bodied wine that should age nicely over the next 5-10 years. Would pair great with BBQ.

2016 Gypsy Cen t r al Coast | Sipped at Or igin s WIn e Bar & Wood Fir ed Pizza, Lovelan d, CO | Produced by Zinke WIne CO, CA

Rich and meaty on the nose, yet refined and balanced on the palate. It's an old world style blend of Grenache, Syrah and Mourvedre that gives plummy fruit flavors with notes of game, leather and subtle herbs. We paired this with steak medallions and it was my favorite sip of the dinner that evening.

Zin ke Kim sey Syr ah 2015| Sipped at Pr ivat e even t , Lovelan d, CO | Produced by ZInke Wine CO, CA Sourced from a premier parcel in the southwestern most corner of Ballard Canyon, Kimsey Vineyard is an ideal site for Syrah and is grown using meticulous viticulture practices that adhere to the strict standards of Organic certification. This Syrah is a beautiful representation of the terroir with aromas of ripe blue berry, saddle leather and a touch of Valrhona chocolate. The aromas translate almost seamlessly to the palate and finish with a slight smokiness, and a structure that keeps the party going even after its gone.

Zin ke Blan ca 2016 Paso Robles | Sipped at Or igin s WIn e Bar & Wood Fir ed Pizza, Lovelan d, CO | Produced by Zinke WIne CO, CA

A blend of Viognier, Marsanne, Genache Blanc and Roussanne this wine delights all the senses. White stone fruit dominates the bouquest and is contrasted by straw, Meyer lemon and jasmine. Then Kiwi and honeydew melon jump up front with a big finish that brings pear to mind. A few people thought they picked up hints of gouda, which I can't say I noted, but this was fabulous wtih a potatoe & Zucchini fritter with spicy garlic aioli sauce.

2017 Color adeau x | sipped at Pr ivat e even t , Joh n st ow n , CO | Produced by Colterris Wines, Palisade, CO

Tag us or email us at info@girlsgonegrape.com! This wine from Colorado's Grand Valley AVA really shares the expression of the winemaker 's and the Colorado Terrior. A blend of Cabernet Sauvignon, Merlot, Petit Verdot, Malbec and Cabernet Franc. It's a nice introduction to Colorado wines and is great for going into the fall weather paired with warmer dishes.

that builds character as it ages that could explain why I'm such a character?

SHE SAYS WINE. H E SAYS BEER.

SHE SAYS: I give up! Let's just stick to sharing a few of our favorite reds for Fall. I did just discover the winery Zinke Wine CO that has amazing Syrah, Grenache and a white blend called Blanca that would be fabulous with fall dishes.

Twenty Two years, two kids and seven pups later this couple keeps laughing through life. Yes, even when they don't agree. By David and Robin Salls Here's our thoughts on our favor ite Fall sips..... SHE SAYS: I love the Fall colors and the season in general, but I love that it makes my red wine obsession easier with cooler days and nights. I love big reds, but they do warm me up a bit too much during hot summer days. Fall means I can break out a few heavy hitters like my Brunellos, Barolos and Chiantis. HE SAYS: I don't have the heat issue like the wifey, so anytime is good for a Cabernet Sauvignon, my favorite red. But, since our trip to Italy those Brunellos are on the top of my list for this time of year too. The Brunello di Montalcino from Nostra Vita especially. I think we need to order more from them while I'm thinking about it. SHE SAYS: I think we've got one left from Nostra Vita, but I agree....we need more! Of note, we're partial to this winery after a day spent with winemaker/artist owner and his amazing

family. Everything about this winery just spells love. As for my heating issues...I'm like a fabulous bottle of red, heat makes things harder for me to enjoy. HE SAYS: Sure, that's it. Blame it on the heat. Or, maybe it's because Eve ate from the apple and Adam didn't. SHE SAYS: Did you really just go there? Really? You're an idiot. It's a wine driven fact that women and wine are a lot alike when it comes to many things. HE SAYS: Yeah? SHE SAYS: Yes, women need to tenderly nurtured and age gracefully when under the right circumstances. We just get better with time, just like my favorite Brunellos! HE SAYS: And I'm the idiot? So, let me see if I get you...you're saying women age gracefully because wine does. So, I could say that like a good Cab Sauv that GIRLSGONEGRAPE.COM/

HE SAYS: I agree about those wines. I was surprised by how much i enjoyed the Blanca. I could see if pairing nicely with a couple of dishes for our Thanksgiving table this year. Plus, he's a guys guy, so I like that. He delivered on his no bullshit motto. I beleive what we saw if what you get with him and his wines. I wasn't as big a fan of the Gypsy blend as you were, which is weird, but his Grenache and Blanca I could sip regularly.. SHE SAYS: I think most heartier reds are good for this time of year as I think soups and stews and getting cozy up on the couch with the pups. I also love food and wine this time of year because I'm always hungrier in the colder months! HE SAYS: That's why we all see some gains in the cooler months - food, wine & spirits. Maybe they're good gains, maybe not, depending on your mindset , but it sure is easy to eat and stay inside on a cold day then to go out and play. SHE SAYS: Not everyone in Colorado snow ski's and we're the household sitting around the lodge sipping wine & spirits! No Pain, No Gain or is that no pain, no champagne? House bound sips, right?

Now, I assure you there will be someone who might get offended by the analogies that are drawn, but before you decide to reply or email me, I encourage you to read your Bible, and have a glass of wine or two just like Jesus used to do and I am sure still does...Selah

Th e Win e Lady ?s 1st Com m an dm en t " Th ou Sh alt n ot exalt an y ot h er dr in k above w in e" Usually, we are born with 5 senses: sound, sight, smell, taste

and touch. Wine is the ONLY drink that engages ALL 5 senses. Now, before you posture against me on this please continue to read why no other drink shall be exalted over wine. Sou n d According to one of the legends regarding the origin of clinking your glass for the famous words ?CHEERS?, it is believed it was done to seal some form of deal. The motivation behind clinking your glass with another person you are making a deal with, derives from a symbolic gesture of trust. If one was to deceive the other by backing out of the deal by killing them by poisoning their wine, the idea was by clinking the glasses together, some of the wine each person had would splash into the others. Thus, the clinking of your glass with another person was viewed as a the sign of trust, because who wants to poison and kill themselves? Not me! The proper way to ?cheers? your wine glass is to look the other person in the eye simultaneously clinking your glass together at the lip of the GIRLSGONEGRAPE.COM

glass and saying, ?CHEERS?. Sigh t Your eyes provide clues on what to expect from a wine based on its color and clarity. A cloudy wine may be flawed, or it might simply be unfiltered, like some natural wines. Also, your eyes allow you to determine what the alcohol content may be based on the tears/legs of the wine, looking at the wine is a imperative step in assessing, enjoying and drinking wine, because there is so much to me gleaned from by simply looking at a wine.

Sm ell Smell IS the most important sense in wine tasting! Allow yourself to be focused and open to interpret the various messages and discern the individual notes of what the smell of the wine reminds you of. Yes, sometimes this might lead you down a Cousin Gabe tasting note, but even that is okay. I guess. LOL! The reality is, this is a step that is just as

important as it is subjective, therefore there are no wrong answers. Unless you are Cousin Gabe and in which case you are WRONG on every level! LOL! Tou ch When the wine touches your tongue, you are able to assess fizziness, temperature, viscosity (light/full), alcohol content, as well as the presence of high or low tannins. Tast e This is when your nose impression is confirmed and sometimes even enhanced with new notes and messages. Tasting wine detects sweetness, acidity, and bitterness of a wine.

Disclaimer: The team at Uncorked Wine Bar is waiting for Dionysus to sober up so they can be approved. The Wine Lady Ten Commandments are to be used for entertainment and learning purposes only.

Absolutely NOT. These are wineries, distilleries and breweries that we've invited into our membership and we take that very seriously. They do not pay us to be a part of the cellar partners. We've enjoyed them and

WHY IS THAT? Our goal is to never be "bought" to share about what wines we love. You won't find us sharing a wine unless we love it. We're not trading dollars for high ratings. Adventure is defined as an unusual and exciting, possibly hazardous, experience or activity calling for enterprise and enthusiasm; it is the exploration of unknown territory. Its origins are in the Latin ?adventurus?(i.e., about to happen) from ?advendire?(i.e., to arrive). Adventure is rooted in something happening that helps us arrive at a destination. Anytime we want to try something new or make a change, we step into a daring, exciting activity. Living our lives often requires the exploration of unknown territory; it requires adventure.

Adventure gets you out of your comfort zone. It is a catalyst for growth. Because it stretches you, it moves you forward personally and professionally. Adventure has been shown to have numerous positive outcomes. It can change how you perceive obstacles in your path, give you more courage, help you feel more empowered, make you appreciate more in your life, increase your leadership skills, improve your relationships, and help heal wounds and change beliefs you may have. Adventure is a means to achieving success in your personal life and in your business. So more adventure will bring more success! Here are 4 ways to increase adventure in your life.

~1~ Adopt an adventure mindset. It?s easy to get trapped into the grind of everyday happenings in the workplace; after all we see the same people, spend time putting out fires, attend meetings, etc. How would you perform differently if you shifted your mindset to one of an adventurer? Being bold, exploring unique solutions, engaging your clients and co-workers with new energy and enthusiasm? .if your mindset changes, outcomes will too!

~2~ Try something for the first time. Remember that you ARE on your grand adventure! This is your life, and every day has new potential for discovery and new experiences. What do you shy away from because it?s not in your wheelhouse? Get curious and stay open to learning AND to making mistakes! The key is to get moving on it even if you don?t have a plan ? there are bound to be obstacles but you?ll figure them out.

GIRLSGONEGRAPE>COM

54

SIPONLIFE>COM

~3~ Get an adventure buddy. We all need a support system. Bonnie had Clyde, Crockett had Tubbs, Thelma had Louis, Agent J had Agent K, and Rocket had Groot. A friend can give you courage to stretch your boundaries. Having a ?partner in crime? can add fuel to the creative fires that may take you way outside the box which is where the real progress can happen!

~4~ Travel somewhere. Get outta dodge! Use your vacation time; it?s there for a reason! Taking a trip ? even if short and relatively close by ? can give you a monumental shift in your perspective which is sometimes the greatest aid to finding new and amazing ways of doing business and living in a manner that inspires your daily adventure back home. So put down this magazine and do something new! Step out of your comfort zone and accelerate the achievement of a goal. If you need a nudge with this, contact us ? we?re experts in adventure and how it can impact your life. We can point you to adventure! GIRLSGONEGRAPE.com

GONZALES WINE COMPANY Por t land, Or egon

winemaker to know.ut.

G

onzales Wine CO

You met this Latina-Owned, one - woman winemaker Cristina Gonzales in our earlier pages. She shared her take on what it's like being an entrepreneur in her wine world surrounded by her passion and family. Now, we're going to introduce you to her wines that she's been producing in California and Oregon for some time. Her heart is in producing quality wines that everyone has access too. Wines that are elegant, old world style that are delicious enough to enjoy on their own, yet dynamic enough to pair with foods. Since 2006, she's been hands on experiencing working harvests in California, Oregon, Tasmania and Australia. After working as an intern at Willakenzie Estate in 2007, she fell in love with Oregon. In 2009 she started working for A to Z Wineworks/REX HILL and took on many roles as cellar hand, lab assistant, warehouse manager and finally bottling manager until 2013 when she decided to leap into her personal label. Wines are made naturally, with no added yeasts and minimal sulfur. Cristina works closely with organic, sustainable vineyards to be sure the grapes are meeting her vision and specifications. She's extremely hands on from start to finish bringing you wines that speak to her passion for the land, the people, and the experience. It's important for your wine to be enjoyable, but even more so for the wine to be enjoyed with family and friends. Wine isn't just a beverage, it's an expression of life that can be scene throughout history. She loves the wines of Argentina, so she aims to bring you wines that you might not get to experience otherwise. Her focus is quality verses quantity, a lot more in lines with the old world ways of winemaking, yet she brings a youthful playfulness to her style.

Here's a peak at her wines, but you really need to try them for yourself. Also, I love when you can drink for a good cause and 5% of sales from the 2015 Ar royo Seco Syr ah will directly benefit GIRLS, INC of the Pacific Northwest. A group that knows Girls are our future. A fabulous winemaker who leads with her passion and purpose and needs to be known. Share her story. GIRLSGONEGRAPE.COM

2016 Scar face Rose of M albec

2015 Ar royo Seco Syr ah

Fans of natural wine will adore the meyer lemon brightness and spunky acidity. Think of pairing seafood, funky cheese, and salads. Or, you could use it their fun Scarface Sangria recipe that you can find online.

A bright and brilliant ruby color that shares the richness of this Syrah. Opens with notes of black cherry, boysenberry, anisee and vanilla. It rolls smoothly over the palate with a shining acidity, followed by flavors of blackberry, plum, tobacco, smoke and dried fruit. The lengthly finish pairs with nutty, salty cheeses or try a hearty mole and marinated flank steak.

2016 Ar royo Seco Syr ah-Grenache A garnet-hued red blend is refined yet, easy to love. The body is between light to medium, and with notes of black pepper and leather to balance a mixed berry compote-like fruit.

ZINKE WINES DINNER DI NNER with a Winemaker ? If given the opportunity you should never pass on a chance to sip and learn about the wine from the winemaker themselves. It's a rare glimpse behind the scenes into the stories behind the wine. It's the wine in your glass suddenly going from a syrah blend out of California to the wine named after the winemakers mother because she has the soul of a gypsy. It's wine that is 100% bullshit free because Michael's passion for wine stems from the vine itself, the earth it comes from, and the fruit it produces. He doesn't muddy up the fruit with additives, colorings, or general bullshit. His wines are small lot, whole cluster fermentations, co-ferments, and finding the proper balance of oak and time are part of his formula. It's his passion, love, authenticity, and pursuit of the impossible - perfection, that make his wines stand out. It's meeting a winemaker who shies away from any notion that he's a celebrity of sorts. He's just a man who play s in the soil and turns grapes into wine. He's a hard working man,, husband and new father. Oh yeah, and he makes wine. Damn good wine. I know this as I had the pleasure of sharing a day and dinner with Michael Zinke, out of Grand Crus of California's Centtral Coast which is a stones throw away from his winery in Santa Ynez. A winery that 's been voted for having one of the best experiences in the area overall. We had an amazing three course dinner hosted by Brava Wine Company, Girls Gone Grape and Origins Wine Bar & Wood Fired Pizza in Loveland, Colorado.

Blanc and Roussanne. Delightful to the nose with strong stone fruit and hints of straw, meyer lemon zest and jasmine. Honeydew melon and kiwi really pop out with a finish of asian pear. I love that Zinke says "it's a lascivious white blend favored amongst the ladies and may lead to lapses in judgement, questionable decisions and forgotten morals." It is that good! 2nd Course - 2016 Paso Robles Grenache paired with a seared duck salad - arugula and mixed greens, charred apricot vinaigretter, orange supremes, shaved percorino, candied pecans. Wine - 80% Grenache, 20% Syrah. Zinke's description fits perfectly - scales back the raciness and overly in your face style that Paso is so known for. While still full bodied, she's also elegant and feminine. Think Scarlet Johannsen at a black tie affair. Soft red fruit, delicate rose petals and a mouthful that is silky and round. 3rd Course - Central Coast Gypsy paired with grilled steak medallions, saffron tomatoe risotto, blistered sugar snap peas. Wine - Personally my favorite of the night. It's 40% Syrah, 35% Grenache, 25% Mourvedre. Gorgeous ruby color with dark notes of cocoa and fig. It's full bodied with chalky tannins, roasted game, charred tomatoes and raaspberry compote. Gypsy will age gracefully for the next 5 - 10 years. I love when I find a wine that is amazing and is the full package. The wine. The winemaker. The family. It's a complete win for this winery and one that should be on your lists to try and visit when in California. And, I didn't even mention him sharing his lovely wife and 6 week old little girl with me! I'm going to enjoy watching them all grow over the upcoming years! Salute!

1st Course - 2016 Pasa Robles Blanca paired with a potato and zucchini fritter with spicy garlic aioli. Wine - A blend of Viognier, Marsanne, Grenache
