Class Objective Certification

This training program will provide participants with basic technical skills and knowledge that will prepare them for an entry level IT support position, as well as a better understanding and higher confidence when using common computer applications.

Delivery Method

Virtual Coursera training course including a weekly virtual peer learning session that includes job preparation, resume and interview workshops, and other work readiness skills (job readiness classes start every 4 weeks and occur on Tuesdays and Wednesdays). Also included are extra in-person lab activities and classes that are supplemental to the Coursera content.

Duration

12-18 weeks, minimum 16-20 hours a week ideally

The extra lab sessions occur once a month (in Lifsey and in Clarksville) and last around 2 hours

Prerequisites & Assessments

Have an interest and familiarity with computers, fixing household IT issues and or have professional or informal experience working in IT. Pass Northstars assessments: Computer Basics with an 85% or higher, Internet Basics with an 85% or higher, and Windows 10 with a 75% or higher. Participants must be at least 18 years old, have a high school diploma or equivalent, pass basic computer, reading and math assessments, and develop a service plan with a career coach. Has internet access and a computer or laptop (if not, this will be addressed during enrollment)

Curriculum

This program contains 5 courses that include topics on technical support fundamentals, the binary system, building a computer, computer networking, operating systems, configuring hardware, managing software, system administration, IT infrastructure services, and IT security. There are also 3 lab sessions that coincide with the Coursera curriculum. These labs include hands-on training in disassembling a desktop computer (Lab I), a laptop (Lab II), and installing Linux (Lab III). These lab sessions occur once a month (in order) and there is one class at the Lifsey building and another in Clarksville.
