If 2020 was a difficult year for steel buyers then 2021 looks to have the potential to be very much worse. The shortage of material stems from when lockdown through Covid-19 meant mills closing and then, industry recovery was stronger than anticipated upping demand dramatically.

Glass News’ Editor, Chris Champion, talked with Emplas’ Managing Director, Ryan Johnson, about this issue and he was able to confirm that in costing out an unglazed side hung, next to a fixed, 1230mm x 1480mm Standard PAS24 test size window, showed metal cost at 16.87%. A top hung over fixed 1250mm x 1200mm had a metal content of

Anglo European, the UK galvanised frame reinforcement manufacturer, reassures customers with a guarantee of supply through to the end of July 2021 and with negotiations at an advanced stage for the 3rd quarter.

Indeed, demand is now higher than supply, the first time for many years. The 2nd and 3rd waves of Covid-19 has contributed to the problem as mill assets cannot be turned on and off quickly, resulting in a lack of supply. Is a steel shortage of particular significance to the fenestration industry, you may well ask? After all we are talking about reinforcement, locks, handles and screws but does that equate to a significant proportion of the cost of a window?

20.76% - not an inconsiderable proportion of the price. Iron ore costs are at a nine-year high with both planned and emergency steel mill outages also contributing. Against this backdrop, the World Steel Association (www.worldsteel.org) whose members represent 85% of global steel production, predicts demand for finished steel to increase by 4.1% in 2021. Underlining these issues are increases in the global price of raw steel that will amount to almost 80% between September 2020 and April 2021. Lead times from suppliers such as Mittal and Tata have increased with allocations reduced and subsequently mill orders have been reconfirmed at later dates and at prices linked to those new confirmed timings. Market prices have escalated significantly between summer and now, well into 3 digit increases, with further large upward moves expected into early 2021 and beyond. Continued on page 4...

GOOD NEWS, BAD NEWS, GOSSIP AND SOME STATS! If we thought 2021 would herald the start of a return to normality then we were, sadly, very wrong. It’s very much a continuation of where we were in 2020 although with mutant strains of Covid 19 threatening the return to normal working that we had very much hoped for. Work is, however, continuing including the ability to fit windows and doors at homes and businesses. The fact that manufacturers and fabricators have done so much to ensure safety at work for their employees is paying off as is the responsibility shown by installers, too. Let us hope that the great British public respect the restrictions that have been imposed upon us and thus prevent further lockdown measures. Do I hold my breath on that one? Well, it went to the wire but, as they say, we got Brexit done, and so far there hasn’t appeared to be any serious problems. Am I the only one who couldn’t believe that an airfield full of lorries and queues on the motorway and through Dover, disappeared almost instantaneously? Ferries must be a lot larger than I thought! Interestingly, those who regularly sell to customers in Europe are very relaxed about what Brexit means. A well known fabricator who sends a container of product to France each month commented that it just means a bit more paperwork…no big issue. Obviously the US of A is in the news and for all the wrong reasons but you can’t help admire the enterprise of the glass industry. No sooner had the windows in the Capitol building been breached before the USGNN™ spoke to an assortment of glass experts to assess whether the glass had performed as it should have done, given the smacking it took! The general consensus was that the windows were probably original with a bit of after market work but certainly not modern day IGUs. Saint-Gobain, never one to be backward in coming forward, stated on their website that more than 80,000 square feet of Solar Gard Armorcoat had been installed on government buildings, including the U.S. Capitol. Solar Gard Armorcoat safety window films are manufactured in thicknesses between 2-14 mm. The 14 mm film has a break strength of 420 pound-force inch, according to the

company. The Commercial Window Shield’s website states that the company was hired by the Architect of the Capitol to install safety and security film on the Capitol following September 11, 2001. A spokeperson at Eastman Chemical Co. said that it was clear that the glass became unattached from its frame and that in many cases old windows were glazed with points and putty. If the glass was simply retrofitted with a material to provide safety, that would not necessarily change the glazing detail, and the glass could be ‘pushed’ out of the frame. She went on to say that a hurricane-rated glazing is tested for a Cat 2 Hurricane speed, if it passes, it should be able to take the impact of a 9-pound object at 34 mph—but what if a Cat 5 hits? It will offer protection versus a non-enhanced system, but will it ‘pass’ at the end of the storm? These windows probably performed to the level they were designed to resist, but the actions that could be seen on TV may have well exceeded those threat and risk factors. In some good news Kingfisher, owner of B&Q and Screwfix has benefitted from the pandemic with sales up 16.9%. Additionally, they say 15% of tradespeople agree that their client demand is the highest ever with 18% of people saying that the threats of Covid persuaded them to get on with home improvements and 18% are planning to commence home improvements after the lockdown. And maybe surprisingly, but good news for our installers, 81% agreed that despite Coronavirus they won’t postpone work because of a reluctance to have other people in their homes. FENSA, too, has been talking to its installers and has some interesting statistics: • 74.6% of companies said that work levels have been good or very good since returning to work. • 81.7% of companies stated that they have seen an increase in demand from homeowners throughout H2 • 66.7% of companies say they expect to see the increased demand to continue for the foreseeable future • 94.4% of companies have had problems/delays with lead times for ordering products • 67.4% of companies said their workload was higher or much higher than the same period last year FENSA installers completed over 275k installations for the last six months of the 2020. Impressive! Now, if we can all get vaccinated we’ll be able to look forward to the FIT Show in September.

COLD CALLING

DANNY WILLIAMS

Continued from page 1... Estimated price rises from Q3 2020 to Q2 2021 could be between £250 to £300 per tonne. Reduced steelmaking on a global scale and with China becoming a nett importer of steel for the first time in around a decade, have also been key drivers. Additionally, the demand from the automotive industry has returned at higher levels than pre-Covid, and imports of steel into the UK have reduced due to a lagging UK price in June, July and August 2020. Many importers sold into China and the EU as opposed to the UK market. In addition, there is also the issue of new steel tariffs on imported material that came into place from January 2021. The effect being that once quotas are hit, the customer or importer has to pay a 25% tariff to release material. Interestingly, we understand that TATA Steel UK is the only manufacturer of galvanised coil in the UK who are not affected by these tariffs. As a result, European steelmakers are continuing to raise their prices for new transactions and buyers complain of offers being made and then withdrawn. In many cases orders placed in December 2020 are now no longer valid. The ever-changing market conditions are creating significant difficulties for buyers throughout the supply chain with lengthening delivery lead times for certain categories now being quoted for dates into the 2nd and 3rd quarters. There is also an issue over speculative purchasing which is adding to the normal order book with buyers trying to replenish depleted inventory. This, together with maintenance outages scheduled for January and longer lead times could result in shortages as well as higher prices. Although automotive and construction have out performed other industries, there are questions over whether this is sustainable and there is a danger of buyers finding they have overpriced inventory if the rapid rise in steel prices is followed by a similar fall when industries have stocked up and demand reduces. In could be a volatile 2021 in the steel market and Anglo European Group CEO, Paul Sullivan, says that he and his team have been extremely concerned about the volatility in the steel sector for some time and have put plans in place to protect the company’s fabricator customers: “We have been supplying steel reinforcement to the UK window and door industry for more than 30 years and the current market conditions are without doubt the most volatile that we have experienced in that time,” explained Sullivan. “Core material price increases are substantial and changing daily, and these will have to be passed on as they take place,” he continued. “However, the key issue is continuity of supply. To ensure that our customers do not experience potentially severe disruption to their production output caused by shortages of steel reinforcement, we have secured supplies at least until July 31st 2021, with negotiations at an advanced stage for the second half of the year.”

‘COLD CALLING’ Each month our special correspondent Danny Williams* replies to a reader’s letter...

“I run a small installation firm in the North East with a couple of lads. To be honest I can’t be arsed with all the messing around with the PPE and stuff and I’m thinking of packing it in for a couple of months, to keep me and the lads safe. Business has been pretty good so money is not an issue. What are your thoughts?” JS Co Durham My first thought is: shall I set up in Durham and come and take over your leads. My second thought was, until I checked, that you must be knocking on and are near to retirement so why take a chance? And how wrong was I….from our little text exchange it turns out you aren’t even 50 yet! Your suggestion is simply against every instinct in my body and soul JS and until recently I would have said you were in a minority of 1! But a look through some of the installer groups on Facebook and whathave-you, shows you are not alone. My instincts and those of pretty much everyone that I work with and supply, is to grab every opportunity that presents itself and, when those are looking a little thin on the ground, to get out there and drive business to the door. Which is exactly what we are doing now. Despite our output running at around 120% of budget and our installer customers all making hay, I have got my team working harder than they have ever worked because you simply don’t know what is round the next corner. These are tough times JS although to be honest our industry dodged a bullet last year when we emerged from lockdown in May to order books that, within a few

“Small is beautiful of course and you tell me that last year you put your lads on furlough when we locked down, but got stuck in again as soon as we were able to return to work. That is more the spirit that I expect from most of the people I have come across in this industry, who are characterised largely by being highly motivated and driven to succeed.” weeks, were bulging. Small is beautiful of course and you tell me that last year you put your lads on furlough when we locked down, but got stuck in again as soon as we were able to return to work. That is more the spirit that I expect from most of the people I have come across in this industry, who are characterised largely by being highly motivated and driven to succeed. ‘Messing around with the PPE and stuff ’ is hardly a chore JS, as you already take care of most of it if only to save your fingers and eyes. It’s a matter of fact for anyone involved in installation. So how much more difficult can it be to add masks and sanitiser to the vans? And communication with your customer can easily take place over the phone or a video call, with them making themselves scarce when you go to install. Our industry now has clear guidelines on

how to operate under the restrictions to ensure your lads and your customers are safe. So what else is going on? Truth is that I think you and the others I have seen joining in the chats simply can’t be bothered, and with the worst of the winter weather still to come (worse for you hardy Northern chaps currently, I accept) the desire to keep toasty is more of an issue than worrying about wearing face masks. You are lucky enough to have some degree of control over your own destiny. But your employees don’t and you have a responsibility to them, that goes way beyond tapping up the government (and the rest of us, ultimately) for a bit of furlough money. But you will also damage your reputation amongst your existing customers as well as gaining a negative one as the company that couldn’t be bothered, something that also does little to enamour people to the ‘double glazing’ industry. Lord knows we have come a long way since the old days when being called a cowboy was a step up for some. This behaviour does not help. So JS, I am not sure what you really expected me to say but my thoughts are that if your heart isn’t in it you should find something else to do. If I felt the way you do, I would pack it in completely. Although by the time you read this the chances are we will all be locked down anyway, with again Boris having followed his wee Scottish Nemesis, and banned home installations for England, Wales and Norther Ireland. In which case you will have your wishes answered.

* Danny Williams is managing director of Chelmsford based Pioneer Trading and has been involved with all aspects of the windows and doors industry for 35 years. His activities include manufacturing a full range of windows and doors in PVC-U and aluminium, an IGU facility, retailing and commercial contracting.

JOB MANAGEMENT SOFTWARE THAT’S DESIGNED FOR YOU Onsite 7 is the innovative new job management software designed for the trade by the trade. Rhys Hoddinott, CEO of Onsite 7 introduces the software and explains why every installer needs it.

It’s such a valuable tool because it was developed by people with solid experience as business owners in this sector. We’ve felt the pain points you’ve felt. We’ve heard all the excuses in the book about why a customer shouldn’t pay. We’ve had miscommunications from our teams about whether a job is complete or not. And most importantly of all, we know that a fast-paced business needs software that is quick and straightforward to set up and works the way you want it to. We combine this with strong ethics and values that cascade through our business to ensure we always deliver on expectations.

Here’s a worrying fact. According to the World Commerce & Contracting association, 20.7% of contracts in the construction sector result in claim or dispute. This leads to lost employee hours dealing with the claim, higher operating costs and lost sales revenue, not to mention potential reputational damage. For most businesses, a claim is all-too-often your word against theirs. And if there’s no way to prove who’s right and who’s wrong, there’s always the risk that your business will be found liable – even if it shouldn’t be. And even if a contract isn’t disputed, there’s always the frustration of costly callbacks for remedial works that shouldn’t be your responsibility because the damage occurred after you left. If this sounds like an all too familiar scenario, then installers need to take a closer look at Onsite 7. With Onsite 7 in your business, you mitigate all these risks. It’s an easy to use, cloud-based solution that allows you to capture all relevant information, documentation,

“Having the ability, by customer, and on a jobby-job basis to allocate and review every step of the customer journey was incredible. It is as if the software was designed specifically for my business. Using Onsite 7 I can see the ‘sales stage’, ‘survey stage’‘install stage’ and ‘any service calls attended’ against the jobs. This allows me to review previous visits and action visits either assigned to myself or my team members.” 8

instructions, photographs, videos and contract variations for every stage of every job in one place. Crucially, because everything’s agreed with the customer at each stage, there can be no dispute about what both parties agreed or how a job was left.

Michael Hollyer, Director of Clearstyle Windows, has brought Onsite 7 into his business. He says: “Having the ability, by customer, and on a job-by-job basis to allocate and review every step of the customer journey was incredible. It is as if the software was designed specifically for my business. Using Onsite 7 I can see the ‘sales stage’, ‘survey stage’ ‘install stage’ and ‘any service calls attended’ against the jobs. This allows me to review previous visits and action visits either assigned to myself or my team members.”

Quite simply, it’s peace of mind for your business and incredibly easy to use.

For all these reasons and more, Onsite 7 is attracting a great deal of industry attention.

I started with the scare story, but Onsite 7 is so much more than an insurance policy for your business.

It suits businesses of any size and can add value at every level.

It’s also a system that streamlines your business at every level. All the information connected with all your jobs is stored in one place that’s accessible whether you’re in the office, on the road or on site with a customer. That means you’ll never leave vital paperwork back in the office or not have all the information you need to hand. You can use it to manage jobs because you can assign tasks to teams to complete and see at a glance the stage every job has reached. It also acts as a customer relationship management (CRM) system so you can have a single system giving you all the information you need.

Onsite 7 costs just £20 + VAT per month per licence, so it’s an incredibly cost-effective investment. To get started with it in your business today, visit onsite7.co.uk and hit ‘Sign Up’.

It makes managing your business much easier, saving you time and money. In fact, it takes less than 14 days to start to drive more efficiency in your business with Onsite 7 on your side. It isn’t just efficiency either. It’s a system that gives your business a professional polish, enhancing your reputation with your customers and making it easier to build their trust.

MUST DASH!

DASHBOARD OFFERS SUPERB AT-A-GLANCE CONTROL FOR ADMINBASE USERS Although available as an option for some time on the original Cloud-based version of leading installer management system AdminBase, the web-based version launched last year, introduced to allow customers more convenient secure remote access to their company’s data via laptop, tablet or home computer, includes a very slick Dashboard facility at no additional cost. And just as a car ‘dashboard’ is an essential part of a vehicle, designed to present all key information ‘at-a-glance’ to the driver, so is the AdminBase version. The premise of the AdminBase Dashboard is simple enough: using what has become an intuitive understanding of what the colours red, amber and green indicate when used as a signal, users – who may be the Managing Director of the company through to the admin team - can summon up the Dashboard and gain a highly accurate view of as many distinct

operations within their organisation as they choose to set up. Green signifies the overall time allocated to complete a particular action, amber denotes that an action is still pending, and red indicates that it is overdue – as simple as that. With this information presented graphically in the form of pie charts, users can assess the status of active contracts quickly

Peter Wheeler Managing Director SEH BAC

Rhonda Ridge

and efficiently. This summarised view is then supported with more detailed contract information listed for each chart, highlighting both individual contract values and the collective values of contracts sitting at each stage of the process – from initial enquiry right through to installation and remedial work.

A strong advocate of AdminBase and especially the Dashboard feature, is Peter Wheeler, Managing Director of Ipswich based installer SEH BAC, which celebrates 50 years in business and operates 13 Show Centres in an area that includes Suffolk, Oxfordshire, Buckinghamshire, Hertfordshire and Essex.

“The whole point of AdminBase is to give installers what they need to ensure they have full control of their business,” said Ab Initio Managing Director Rhonda Ridge. “Dashboard is a simple, but highly effective tool that does just that. Rather than wasting time and effort manually keeping on top of how each part of a contract is progressing, the Dashboard does all the hard work for you, reducing the risk of bottlenecks and improving efficiency.”

Peter says: “The Dashboard and checklist notifications within AdminBase allow us to track a customer’s order through our processes, providing each of our administrators with alerts to allow them to review progress. And as each stage is completed, at the click of a mouse button the system sends the customer an email or text update direct to their mobile device, to keep them informed of the progress of their order. “This happens throughout the process, also including remedial works and right through to the account being paid and all works completed. We also use the Dashboard and automated notifications features within AdminBase for all aspects of processing conservatory orders for example, which also assists us in dealing with planning applications and permissions. All warranty work, such as it is, is also managed through AdminBase. The dashboard lead times are set to your requirements and you can write your own scripts to personalise them to your business; set up is also very user friendly,” added Peter. Take up of the web-based version of AdminBase has been especially strong during the past year, as installers have sought efficiencies within their businesses to cope with the additional pressures imposed by the pandemic in addition to strong sales volumes: “AdminBase, and especially the Dashboard feature, has allowed installers to manage their businesses more efficiently, especially the additional imperative of protecting customers and staff, and sales volumes that have been as much as 150% of budget for some installers,” said Rhonda. The Dashboard update also includes the AdminBase data export service, Export Data Designer, and can integrate sales leads from an installer customer’s own website, directly into the AdminBase system. NEW GOOGLE MAPS FEATURE FOR ADMINBASE ALLOWS AT-A-GLANCE JOB PLANNING AdminBase is now available with the world’s favourite mapping application Google Maps, in the latest development of the industry leading installer management system. Available as an automatic upgrade at no additional charge, the Google Maps facility will now allow users to check details of the geographical locations for scheduled site functions at-aglance, to give immediate visual information on the locations for sales, survey, installation and service personnel.

The addition of Google maps will revolutionise planning for all site functions, says Rhonda Ridge, Managing Director of Ab Initio Systems and the originator of AdminBase: “In 2020 Google Maps was used by 1 billion people every month and for most of us using the app, it is intuitive. Adding this facility to AdminBase to allow users the ability to look at the map to see where all their site-based people are at any one time, is likely to become one of the most used features of AdminBase,” says Rhonda. “Google Maps will be added automatically to web-based versions of AdminBase, through a free update,” she added.

To learn where and when sales people will be at any one time for example, administrators can easily view appointments by each salesperson or for the whole company, especially useful when planning additional sales calls or checking the activities of any salesperson, or for the company overall. The location and identity of each representative is shown in clear detail on the map including the time of their appointment. When new prospects call asking to see a representative, the administrator can summon up the sales map and immediately determine when a rep is in the area to call upon the prospect. Another sales function is to extend a novel and unique existing feature that already exists within AdminBase, that records the types and location of products installed. Whenever a prospect expresses an interest in viewing a specific type of product and installation, demonstration calls can easily be planned for the prospect to visit the site closest and most convenient for them. Similarly, Survey, Fitting and Service calls can be planned easily by entering the address and, at the click of a mouse button, all other existing scheduled calls in the area, at a specific time and day, can be viewed. The new address can then be entered into the schedule when agreed, with the appointment automatically confirmed to the customer and added to the relevant AdminBase diary.

FIT SHOW & BUSINESS PILOT TEAM UP TO INCREASE INSTALLER PROFITABILITY FIT Show has teamed up with Business Pilot, the cloud-based ERP / CRM system for fitting and installation companies, to develop a series of guides to help installers increase profitability. The ‘WorkSmart’ series will focus on the data that installation businesses should be extracting to help them streamline operations, making them more profitable. ‘WorkSmart’ will run monthly in the lead up to FIT Show’s new 26 - 28 September 2021 dates, when the UK’s number one event for the glass and glazing industry will return to the NEC.

and analysing if they are actually more profitable, or just busy. Speaking about the campaign with Business Pilot, FIT Show event director, Nickie West said: “A key theme for FIT Show 2021 will be helping our audience to do better business and, ultimately, improve their bottom line. We recognise that to deliver true value, above and beyond the three physical days of the event, we have to look at new ways to deliver content to our audience. “We are always looking at new and innovative ways to work with our

exhibitors to extract the information that will add the most value to our audience. Whilst visitors will be able to see Business Pilot at FIT Show in September, we wanted to work with them to develop the cobranded ‘WorkSmart’ series to start adding value before visitors walk through the halls. We’re excited to announce the launch of this series.” Elton Boocock, Managing Director, Business Pilot, said: “We have seen how radically things can change in the last 12-months and it’s really important that as businesses, we remain agile, adapt to

The first in the series, ‘WorkSmart - Are you profitable?’, uses exclusive data and insight from the Business Pilot team to challenge installation companies into looking beyond the order book those challenges. The WorkSmart series is about understanding how the commercial landscape has shifted and how installers can adapt to those changes, ultimately making their businesses stronger and more profitable. We’re delighted to be able to partner with the FIT Show, which is itself a case in point of an organisation which is adapting to change, and we look forward to catching up with the industry in person in September.”

EXCLUSIVE INTERVIEW: FIT SHOW 2021

The UK’s Leading Glass & Glazing Newspaper

A GOOD MOVE. THE FIT SHOW IS NOW

26, 27 AND 28 SEPTEMBER 2021 We had planned for an update interview with The FIT Show’s Nickie West but didn’t expect it would be to talk about moving the date from May through to September. Glass News’ Editor, Chris Champion, talks to Nickie about that decision and the implications of moving the date. Glass News fully understands and applauds the decision as the rise in infection, accelerated by the new mutant strain of Covid-19, means a protracted period of lockdown and no guarantees of an easing of restrictions by the original due date for FIT in May. Is the September date safe? Will everyone have been vaccinated in time for a September FIT Show? Nickie West talks about the issues involved in making the decision to move the date and, importantly, the trade’s reaction to this decision. The FIT Show team has spent a lot of time talking with exhibitors and keeping them up to speed with developments. This is vital as committing to stand design and build, hotel reservations and the general work and preparation needed prior to exhibiting is an expensive investment. On the face of it, one might think that moving dates at the NEC would be easy, given the current circumstances, however it seems everyone else who had planned exhibitions are

also looking to move dates to a time when restrictions on social distancing will be relaxed, making reserving the Halls of choice and the preferred dates not an easy task. The team has succeeded in their negotiations with the NEC, reserving Halls 17, 18 and 19 and opening on a Sunday. In the days of Glassex, a Sunday was very successful, particularly for installers, giving them the chance to visit the FIT Show without giving up a day on the tools. Nickie gives us an insight into her thinking for the Sunday and how it could be part of a family weekend and we look forward to hearing what may be introduced to make the Show entertaining, with family packages in conjunction with hotels and entertainment venues. Nickie is very appreciative of the reaction from the exhibitors and the support everyone is showing for a September FIT Show. How are bookings going? Nickie and her team are helping to make transferring the show dates as easy as possible and it is clear that exhibitors are keen to make the switch. Indeed, immediately after the announcement a new booking was taken for a sizeable stand and from a completely new exhibitor to the FIT Show. Will Brexit make any difference to the Show? Nickie doesn’t believe so as it is a very UK centric show. Have you already registered for the FIT Show? With a move of date do you have to register all over again? No. FIT organisers are moving the registrations to the new dates so all you need to do is note those dates and turn up! Nickie believes that there will be a big appetite for holidays this summer, so get your welldeserved holiday and then look forward to the FIT Show on 26, 27 and 28 September! It’s your trade show. The message from Nickie to potential exhibitors is that you don’t have to have a huge and expensive stand, but you do need to be part of FIT.

The UK’s Leading Glass & Glazing Newspaper

EXCLUSIVE INTERVIEW: TOMMY TRINDER

FRAMEPOINT®:

SAVING TIME, MINIMISING ERROR AND WOWING CUSTOMERS While Tommy Trinder’s Framepoint® software is ideal for distance selling and has proved itself throughout the Covid-19 pandemic and the lockdowns that have prevented face-to-face selling of windows and doors in customer’s homes, it struck me that its application can be very much more. Talking to Tommy Trinder’s architect of the Framepoint® software, Chris Brunsdon, Glass News’ Editor Chris Champion finds out more about how the software can be used and the ease of use, both for setting up product and showing it to the customer – and pricing, too. Forgetting the restrictions on selling to the homeowner, can Framepoint® be used when we are back to normal and are there significant advantages to using it? Chris Brunsdon comments: “Whereas our sales staff were visiting potential customers and demonstrating the versatility of the software pre-pandemic and then training the customer on its use, we had to do our own distance selling just like everyone else since March 2020.” “The simple fact is that with Zoom and Teams, and other communication applications, our staff have been able to demonstrate and train people on the software. Now, with some light at the end of the tunnel, I think it will be hard to persuade them to go back on the road! If we think logically, using all the technology makes sense. Why would anyone want to be driving all over the country for, maybe, an hour or two hour meeting when that meeting or training session can be done efficiently with no travel cost or time spent driving up and down motorways? Of course there are advantages to face-to-face meetings but perhaps it will be a

matter of being selective in the future rather than automatically jumping in a car, with all the expense associated with that.” In this clip from our own Zoom meeting, Chris shows how Framepoint® is used to sell products to a homeowner, how it can show windows and doors of all types on a house and be changed for style and colour, and that includes different colours both inside and out. If it is the salesperson’s choice, pricing can be shown immediately. Equally, if the desire is to send on a quote later, then no problem. Chris talks about the three kinds of salesperson – the Closer, the Sender and the Processor, and explains each philosophy and how Framepoint® is used for each different method of selling. All well and good you may well say, but setting up the software with the different products and prices must be a mammoth job…that was certainly my reaction! But Chris shows that setting up the products and prices, as well as making changes whenever you want, is certainly not rocket science. Framepoint® is a powerful selling tool, whether during a pandemic or in normal working life. It’s easy to use and has a ‘wow’ factor that can’t help but impress a customer. Watching this video and listening to what Chris Brunsdon has to say may well make you think that Framepoint® will make your sales efforts easier and more efficient, and that applies to Closers, Senders or Processors! “We’ve invested over a year of dedicated product development in making sure we can make pricing quick and easy for installers – however they choose to sell,” says Chris. “Our primary mission is to help installers save time, minimise error and wow customers – having mechanisms to price efficiently is a big part of that,” said Chris. WHICH DOOR?

The UK’s Leading Glass & Glazing Newspaper

UNLOCKING LOCKDOWN During Lockdown #1, Apeer did spectacularly well with consumer response to its stylish videos. Then it was speculative; now it’s a known quantity and the Irish doormaker is turning up the gas. On May 23rd 2020 the UK shut up shop. Window and door factories – amongst many other industries - simply pulled the shutters down, almost in anticipation of the advice to close. It was as if the industry was ready for a collective holiday; we were all in the same boat, so suck it up and make the most of it. The rug was also pulled on marketing by most companies; whilst the furlough system was a life saver for most, cash had to be preserved…and they couldn’t deliver or install anything anyway. Hunker down and wait for the storm to pass. Asa McGillian, MD of composite door maker Apeer, decided not only to keep his consumer marketing in place as planned, but actually to increase it. But rather than making that decision based upon reams of extensive research data, he was largely following his instincts: “We were revising all of our marketing,” said Asa, “and whilst we kept our marketing department open, we were slowed down with everyone working remotely. But,” he added, “we had completed some beautiful new ‘lifestyle’ videos to be distributed through social media such as YouTube and Facebook. And whilst I would love to be able to say that we knew everyone would be glued to their laptops and iPads and smartphones throughout lockdown, we had no idea just how much so. We happened to have these beautiful videos ready, so we rolled them out as planned.” The Apeer boss is being modest to a degree: the production of seven brand new videos for Apeer doors in addition to three more for the sister window brand lumi, was driven by response to a dramatic ‘rock’ style video the firm had made and distributed for its Silka aluminium lookalike composite door: “Even before the lockdown our research showed that video produced 66%

“As we enter 2021 we are spending even more on promotion for our videos, with lead-generation for our installer partners throughout the UK and Ireland our absolute priority.” 16

Asa McGillian, Managing Director, Apeer

more qualified sales leads, whilst increasing purchases by 144%,” recalled Asa. We now know that homeowners, spending an extraordinary time with their families at home, decided to embark on an impressive drive to improve their homes, with the result that the window and door industry returned to unprecedented levels of enquiries and indeed sales when restrictions ended. Weekly leads generated through Apeer’s Doorbuilder online design facility, were consistently higher compared to prelockdown levels. “We had pushed out those seven videos at the start of lockdown and we wanted to promote them as much as possible, without being in peoples’ faces at the beginning when fear and panic about being infected and job security and finances were the most important things on peoples’ minds. But as time went on, we could see people starting to relax and doing research for doors and windows. And curiously we’ve found more of a male audience clicking through on our Lumi advertising where before it was predominantly female – perhaps because there are more bored males on furlough?” quipped Asa. Inspired by the success of the videos during March, April and May Apeer invested heavily in promotion during the autumn, to climb to a heady 300,000 plus viewings from a not-too-shabby 160,000 during May. And with that experience in mind, Apeer is further stepping up its onslaught: “As we enter 2021 we are spending even more on promotion for our videos, with lead-generation for our installer partners throughout the UK and Ireland our absolute priority,” confirmed Asa. “So we are now ideally placed to even step up our efforts, as once again we are all staring at our four walls. As despite the latest restrictions being endured rather than enjoyed, there are signs that homeowners are still committed to improving their homes. And this time we are more than ready for them.”

WHICH DOOR? PERSONALISED COVID-19 INSTALLATION POLICIES ARE A SUCCESS, SAYS ENDURANCE Over 100 personalised COVID-19 installation policies have been produced by Endurance Doors for their nationwide network of Installer Partners, while the remainder have benefitted from the generic version that was distributed back in April last year. Much was done last year by the solid and secure composite door pioneer to support Installer Partners through the unprecedented pandemic and both effective communication and the provision of dedicated marketing tools, did much to support and to re-assure their customers. There has also been a templated risk assessment produced, highlighting the risks and remedial actions that each installation business should consider when carrying out a door installation in the current climate. This important document not only provides guidelines at the point of fitting, but is a handy publication that can be given to consumers for complete reassurance and peace of mind, that all precautions and best practice will be adhered to throughout the installation process. Installer Partners have reported that it has helped cement more sales and ensured that there are no last-minute cancellations by concerned homeowners. Stephen Nadin, Managing Director of Endurance Doors commented: ‘As we remain fully operational as a business, it’s important that we continue to support our Installer Partners in every way possible. The COVID-19 installation policies have been a big success, allowing Installer Partners to add unique content, different colours and logos, prior to print. He continued: ‘While we can see a way out of this thanks to the vaccination programme, we must remain vigilant, cautious and meticulous in the way that we manage business processes from manufacture through to installation.’ For further information on the Endurance Solid and Secure composite door range please call the sales office on 01652 659259, visit https://endurancedoors.co.uk, or e-mail marketing@endurancedoors.co.uk. DESIGN FOR THE NEW NORMAL With the new normal and remote selling, the industry and the way we do things has change dramatically over the last twelve months. More and more services are moving online to keep up with the changes, and companies have to adapt to this new situation to survive.

“We wanted to create something different that would set Force 8 apart, but at the same time make it simple to use” “Including arched frames in the system was a major element for Force 8 and fills a large gap in the door market. Since it’s launch in 2018 we have continued adding to the system as we develop new designs, and acquire additional glazing cassettes. It’s now grown to be a major benefit, and

almost a necessity with customers no longer able to visit showrooms during the present restrictions, it’s an ideal solution to these strange times”. If installers want to add the system to their website, Force 8 are offering the Door Designer free of charge, just register with the company to obtain a link to their trade website. Register here: force8.uk/door-designer-registration/ For further information on all Force 8 products and service visit their website at www.force8.uk.

Force 8 has always had a strong digital presence and it has now been reinforced with the addition of an extensive range of glazing cassettes to their unique Door Designer. Launched in 2018, the Force 8 Door Designer is the only online design system that includes arched frames; ‘an important element missing from every other system’. Homeowners have the ability to design their own door from the comfort of their armchair and then view it digitally in their own home, whether it's a standard or arched frame. The simple no-nonsense step-by-step design process means that both the public and trade can use it with ease. “We wanted to create something different that would set Force 8 apart, but at the same time make it simple to use”, comments Dennis Sumner, Managing Director of force 8.

WHICH DOOR?

The UK’s Leading Glass & Glazing Newspaper

WHY ALUMINIUM BIFOLDS AND PATIOS ARE AN ESSENTIAL ELEMENT OF EVERY INSTALLER’S PORTFOLIO Many homeowners are investing in home improvements and with the trend for light-filled spaces showing no sign of slowing down, aluminium bifolds and patios having never been more popular. Steve Cross, Director of specialist trade fabricator Mercury Glazing, discusses the importance of choosing the right products and the right supplier if you want to capitalise on the market opportunities. It’s fair to say there’s a home improvement boom going on at the moment!. The statistics are astonishing – according to a survey by money.co.uk, between March and July last year, homeowners spent £55 billion on improvements – that’s an average of £4,035.70. There are several reasons for the boom. Firstly, many homeowners are stuck at home and want to create a property that works better for them. Secondly, more than half of people (53%) said they would rather improve than move over the next year. And thirdly, they’ve got the funds to be making the improvements. The Office for National Statistics estimates that UK households spend an average of £182 per week on activities such as holidays and meals out –

activities that have been in short supply in the past year, making it easier to save. The good news is that the boom looks set to continue with a recent report confirming that British households are planning to spend an average of £6,531 on transforming their homes in 2021. When it comes to this upturn, the question for our industry is simple: how do we capitalise on it? The answer is to make sure we have the products that fit the bill for the improvements that homeowners are making. In many ways, not much has changed. Homeowners are still seeking to create more space. The drivers have changed slightly, though. The aim now is to create living spaces that enable home working. This means that garden studios are growing in popularity as well as new build extensions. For our industry, key products are aluminium bifolds and patios – doors that create inspirational spaces that make the most of natural light and bring a sophisticated edge to home life. Both options have their advantages. Bifold doors are the aspirational choice with consumers, the doors that feature in nearly every Grand Designs project you’ve ever seen and as such, they have become a staple part of most installers’ portfolios for some time. Equally patio doors are always popular and offer numerous benefits. They can have larger panes, which means fewer glazing bars interrupting the view and they take up less space than a bifold. And in the great British climate, they may actually be a more practical choice for consumers.

22

The one thing that’s surely a given is both bifold doors and patio doors have to be aluminium. Only aluminium has the dramatic aesthetics as well as the lightweight but robust credentials that these types of door need. Most importantly they present a great upsell for the installer as often command a higher pricing point. We can see that aluminium bifold and patio doors are growing in popularity since the first lockdown by looking at our order book. We’ve witnessed a huge upturn in sales in the past year and hear from our customers how important these must-have products have become. As a trade supplier that focuses on specialist products, our customers return to us time and again to help them keep up with demand and maximise sales. In the first instance, we have the capacity to keep lead times to a minimum – we opened our second aluminium factory last year as part of our strategic growth plans, so we have the capacity to cope. We have the experience too – we’ve been in business for over 15 years’ and we pride ourselves on our quality and service. And of course, we have the products that homeowners want and installers need. We fabricate two aluminium systems. Smart Aluminium Systems is the UK’s leading supplier of aluminium glazing systems and Alutech is a world-leading supplier. The Smart Visofold Bifold series of doors has all the design, thermal efficiency and security benefits you would expect. Add in impressive opening apertures and low threshold options and you have a package that’s hard to beat.

The Alutech Aluminium Bifolding Door has up to seven leaves each way (14 in total), comes in a wealth of options and has all the durability and reliability bifold doors need. It offers an exciting solution for timesensitive or budget-conscious projects too: there’s a short lead time and it costs from £350 per leaf, including cill. Finally, we have the Visoglide Plus Aluminium Patio Door, which offers contemporary styling, robust performance and superior thermal performance. It’s fair to say that there is a sense of unreality at the moment. Our industry is booming but there’s also concern about what the longer term looks like. It probably means you’re keen to capitalise on as many opportunities as you can at the moment. This means savvy installers need the right products from the right supplier more than ever before with the added assurance that they are working with a business that offers longevity and financial stability. And with our capacity, experience and commitment to quality, Mercury Glazing ticks all the boxes. To find out more visit www.mercuryglazing.co.uk

WINDOWS

The UK’s Leading Glass & Glazing Newspaper

SPECTUS FLUSH TILT & TURN WINDOWS SPECIFIED FOR NEW BUILD EXTRA CARE DEVELOPMENT 200 Spectus Flush Tilt & Turn Windows were specified for a 60-home extra care development in Grimsby. The three-storey building, Burchester Court, comprises of 60 one and two-bedroom apartments, all with accessible and open plan living space. Designed for people who are aged 55 and over, the development enables residents to live independently in their own contemporary apartments with the reassurance of on-site care and support facilities. With contemporary design a key feature of the new development, the window contractor choices were critical. The contract was awarded to experienced Spectus Approved Window Contractor, Jade Windows (Brighouse) Ltd. Spectus Flush Tilt & Turn Windows are an ideal solution for both medium- and highrise buildings such as residential housing, offices, hospitals and universities. It has been specifically designed to prevent the framework from overlapping to give a more ‘flush’ appearance. A high-performance centre seal system with optional third weather seal means the window can achieve a Window Energy Rating of A++ with double glazing and a U Value of 0.8 W/ (m2K) with triple glazing. The Spectus Flush Tilt & Turn is suitable for large window apertures and can accommodate opening sizes of 1464mm x 2314mm with a sash weight load of 150kg. A triple seal is also available for improved weather and thermal performance. In this project, the sleek look of the windows, combined with a grey on white

colour, created the contemporary look required. The safety specifications for the contract were particularly demanding, as befits a project of this nature. Jade Windows worked closely with the in-house Spectus Commercial Team to conduct load bearing tests on the specified window restrictors to BS EN 14351-1, load-bearing capacity of safety devices (350N), to ensure they delivered the level of safety required.

MERCURY GLAZING SUPPLIES INTRODUCES THEIR NEW RETAIL BROCHURE Mercury Glazing Supplies has just published a new retail brochure to help promote their sash windows into the consumer. Steve Cross, Director at Mercury, said “Our latest highend consumer brochure showcases our range of quality sash windows to help inspire homeowners. This new brochure helps our customers sell to end users and provides all the information they require to make an informed choice and help them close the sale.” The Sash Window Collection, as it’s known, has a stunning lifestyle feel, with high quality images throughout that show exactly why the Mercury sash window is a popular choice. The photography is supported with information to help homeowners choose

the windows that are right for them, including a choice of standard or mechanical jointed options, colours, security and energy efficiency. Steve said: “The demand for sash windows has grown dramatically over the last few years as the windows are suitable for all housing styles. The focus on images in our new brochure reinforces the importance of the lifestyle element in choosing our sash windows.” The 16-page brochure was commissioned by Spectus Systems, Mercury’s system provider. Carmen Velilla, Brand Manager at Spectus Systems, said: “The brochure showcases our market-leading sash windows perfectly. It covers all aspects of the window’s unique styling and product options and has already proved to be a

valuable marketing asset for Mercury’s trade customers. Part of our tailored support to our customers is creating bespoke marketing solutions and this brochure is the latest example of the high-end design work we continue to deliver.” Following the 2020 lockdown, there has been a considerable upturn in demand for sash windows. Consumers have had time to research their replacement windows and are looking for featurerich products more than ever. Steve said: “What was once considered the default product for heritage style projects only, has now become the product of choice for high-end properties and modern homes alike.”

Burchester Court was constructed in 2020 during the Coronavirus pandemic, which meant site safety protocols were more stringent than ever. Jade Windows worked closely with project contractors and all trades on site to protect the health and safety of all personnel involved as well as delivering the project on time.

Since 2002 Mercury have been manufacturing the Spectus vertical sliding window and the Gloucesterbased business continues to go from strength to strength. The company has an ambitious growth strategy in place and has recently opened its second manufacturing plant.

The new development has greatly benefitted Grimsby, bringing new homes and creating jobs.

SPECTUS FLUSH TILT & TURN WINDOWS SPECIFIED FOR NEW BUILD SOCIAL HOUSE DEVELOPMENT 300 Spectus Flush Tilt & Turn Windows were specified in the development of 22 onebedroom and 16 two-bedroom flats in Cricket Hill Road, Sheffield. Formerly the site of a social club, the site was secured for a development of a social housing apartment block. The development required 300 windows, all with demanding specifications due to the hilltop location. The contract for the work was awarded to Spectus Approved Window Contractor Jade Windows, thanks to their exceptional track record of working on previous projects with the development’s main contractor.

24

The Spectus Flush Tilt & Turn Window is an ideal solution for both medium-rise and high-rise buildings, such as residential housing, offices, hospitals and universities. It has been specifically designed to prevent the framework from overlapping to give a more ‘flush’ appearance for superior aesthetics. In this project, the sleek look of the windows, combined with a slate grey on smooth colour, created the appearance of an aluminium window but at a more sympathetic price point. The window offers exceptional performance, which was important on this project because of the hilltop location. It features a high-performance centre

seal system with optional third weather seal and can achieve a Window Energy Rating of A++ with double glazing and a U Value of 0.8 W/(m2K) with

triple glazing. Finally, 6mm toughened glass was specified to ensure maximum safety for the residents.

With 300 windows needing to be installed on a busy construction site, effective project management was essential. Jade Windows liaised with the project contractors and all trades on site to ensure window fabrication and installation ran as smoothly as possible. Now the project is complete, Sheffield has 38 much-needed apartments. Ryan Fozard, Sales Manager at Jade Windows commented: “The site occupies a prominent position in Sheffield, so we were delighted to be invited to work on it and we are proud of the quality of the end result.” Tel: 0808 178 3370 www.spectus.co.uk

OPEN, BUT AT WHAT COST? Dear Chris, In the simplest terms, our business is measuring an aperture, ordering a window or door and fitting it. Add on selling it and getting paid to the beginning and the end of that, and you’ve got most of the picture. Over more than a decade, we’ve honed every single one of those elements and become one of the most efficient commercial installation businesses in the industry. But Covid is currently putting paid to all of that. Like every business working at the sharp end of this industry, it is affecting every single stage of our operation and, despite sustained demand, our margins are under intense pressure. We’re determined to stay open, but at what cost? Surveys are often cancelled, fabricators are unable to offer timely supply, and illness, shielding and general anxiety amongst residents are drastically affecting the number of installations we can complete. We are constantly having to track changes in delivery dates, and cancel and reschedule installations, sometimes at the last minute when a resident or even one of our own fitters is ill or self-isolating - and it’s proving to be a costly and time-consuming business. And that’s before we even get to the right and wrong of it. Yes, we need to fit to survive and the government has clearly said that in England and Wales, tradespeople can still work in other people’s homes, but we also need to survive to fit. Since the start of the second wave, every business has surely had to question whether we are asking our staff to take an unacceptable risk with their health, while there is such an increased risk of infection?

WHAT’S YOUR OPINION?

I know that the carefully written Covid-19 secure protocols penned by eminent people inside and outside the industry should, in theory, protect everyone, but the fact is that they can’t unless they are scrupulously followed – not just during the installation itself but on the journey there and back as well. And the reality is that it’s not always happening.

Feel free to get in touch with your views on the industry, legislation, government, or even the newspaper.

There is a light at the end of our tunnel of course in the form of the mass vaccination programme but, for installers, it can’t come soon enough. I don’t think any of us wants to see the signs going up which say ‘Closed, but with fixed costs’.

CHANGE TO THE COVID-19 GUIDANCE AS REGARDS SALES WITHIN THE HOME Dear Chris, Yesterday evening (Wednesday 20 January), following numerous discussions with Government departments, we had confirmation on an amendment to the position around selling in the home. This amendment confirms that sales appointments may take place in the home, as long as they are undertaken in a COVIDsecure way. Sales appointments should still take place remotely if possible, but this is not mandatory. If an installer receives a request for a quote from a homeowner, which requires a visit to survey the property and explain the options available, this can be done by an appointment in the home. These appointments must be carried out in a way that is COVID-19 secure and installers should be vigilant with following social distancing, face covering and hand washing in order to protect themselves, their teams and customers. There are no changes to cold sales activity and door-to-door selling, as per the doorto-door sales regulations which were issued on Christmas Eve. This is positive news for installers, many of whom have found it difficult to follow up leads remotely, experiencing a lack of online engagement with homeowners. However, digital is still playing an important part in bringing in warm leads from homeowners so that these sales appointments can take place. Unfortunately, the information on the Government websites will not be altered but the interpretation by bodies such as Certass and the guidance we produce has already been amended and is available now for Certass members to download. Such a change in policy, at a time when the death rate from COVID-19 is at a record high point, I’m sure will lead to concern from many in our industry, but as the largest glazing trade association, it is our responsibility to make sure that glazing companies understand what options are available to them and how any change in regulation affects their working practices.

GET SMART WITH

Q-SMART

Hardware expert VBH has added the Q-Smart electronic smart handle to its range of premium quality window and door hardware and furniture.

It’s a keyless product which gives the homeowner 3 methods of gaining access. The first is a proximity fob that communicates with a reader built into the handle unit; the second is via the Blusafe app that allows the user to use their mobile phone as a key, and the third is finger print recognition. The large reader pad is concealed under a hinged tab to keep it dry. The app enables the main user to send permanent or temporary timed keys to people’s phones VBH say that this eliminates any need to lose control of physical keys by leaving them with neighbours or in a ‘safe’ place’. The app has the added benefit of keeping

a log of operations, thus providing visitor management records

VBH Head of Sales, Dan Powell, advises “Everyone who has seen Q-Smart has been very positive and they all remark on the fact that, by having no less than 3 means of operation, every member of the family’s personal preference should be covered.” No mains wiring is required as Q-Smart is battery powered. The handle warns when the batteries start to run low, but if the user does allow them to go flat, enough temporary power can be provided by plugging in a micro USB power source. VBH supply one with each unit. Dan concludes, “Q-Smart is a great way for fabricators and installers to get new business and more profit by offering a simple step onto the smart ladder. “From a fabrication and installation point of view Q-Smart is very simple to fit and from the salesperson’s perspective it’s easy to sell. This is due to its compact size, its choice of colours and the fact that it is feature-packed but simple for the end user to understand and use.” Q-Smart is fully tested at BSI and certified to ETSI TS103 645 (CYBER; Cyber Security for Consumer Internet of Things). To find out more about Q-Smart, visit www.vbhgb.com, email sales@vbhgb.com, or call 01634 263263.

I urge members to check in to the Certass TA Members Forum on Facebook for the very latest information. Best wishes, Jon Vanstone Chair, Certass Trade Association

ALULOCK... THE NEW SECURITYENHANCED LOCK FOR ALUMINIUM BIFOLDS FROM ALUTECH SYSTEMS Yorkshire-based aluminium systems supplier, Alutech, are offering their fabricator customers the ultimate security kit for aluminium bifolding doors, with the exciting launch of their new AluLock. THE KIT Alutech MD, Steve Hudson, explains, “AluLock is available exclusively for Alutech customers, providing a top security solution for their bifold doors in one easy to order kit, which combines a 1-star barrel, with the option to upgrade to the Ultion 3-star barrel, along with the Brisant Sweet Handle and an exclusively designed Duplex Double Hook Lock.” “The AluLock kit has been designed to remove the headache for our fabricators of sourcing locking hardware separately and provides premium security and aesthetics to help them differentiate their product above that of their competitors.”

THE BARREL The Ultion 3-star barrel provides double the sacrificial protection, made from materials 25% denser than iron and with twice the number of pins than the average lock available on the market (including an antipick pin) and 20-point drill protection as standard. If attacked, the barrel enters ‘lockdown mode’, meaning the lock is practically impossible to penetrate without heavy and noisy power tools. Brisant are so confident of this that they will pay £1000 direct to the homeowner should a burglary take place within 10 years from the

28

point of installation and entry was achieved by snapping an Ultion lock. The guarantee can be activated by the homeowner via the online claim form within 28 days of installation.

THE LOCK The Duplex Double Hook Lock has been designed by UK-based Ingenious’ highly experienced and dynamic design team, providing a 6-point locking system, instead of 3-hook, for additional security. It comes with a dual follower to allow twin spindle function, which prevents unauthorised entry when the lock is in a latched position. Extremely robust with effortless operation, ideal for any modern, security conscious home.

THE HANDLE Safe and stylish, the Sweet Handle is impressively durable, carrying multiple coatings of brass and nickel ensuring robust performance against the elements, with Brisant offering a 10-year direct to homeowner anti-corrosion guarantee for peace of mind. The sleek curved design is not only pleasing to the eye, but is an impressive security feature - stopping gripping tools designed to snap off handles during break ins. Available in black, white, grey, chrome and stainless steel. Gold and rose gold also available. ACHIEVING A COVID-SECURE CULTURE:

DHF PUBLISHES ‘BIOSAFE HARDWARE’ BEST PRACTICE GUIDE Tamworth-based trade association, DHF (Door & Hardware Federation), has published a new best practice guide named Biosafe Hardware. The guidance document targets architects, facilities managers and building managers/ owners, and offers information and support on how they might effectively balance health, safety and security, especially during the current COVID-19 pandemic.

support and guidance to the wider community.

“Very often, there will be a number of potential options for achieving door safety and these need to be balanced against budget, practicality, door type and frequency of use,” adds Patricia. “The flow chart of questions, for example, is an excellent tool for enabling the reader to locate the sections of the document relevant to them.”

“The doors in our buildings are the one thing we all touch on a daily basis and serve as a physical barrier to keep us safe and help control temperature. However, now more than ever, touching a door can pose a greater risk to health,” concludes Patricia. “The new best practice guide is a further example of our continuing commitment to the health and safety of those who have a responsibility towards the well-being of others. The document will hopefully provide clarity and enable the reader to seek further specialist advice with regards to their requirements.”

DHF prides itself on keeping its members - and the industry informed of changes in the sector, and despite the turbulence of 2020, has been as proactive as ever in its provision of vital advice,

Kubu, the smart-sensor technology for doors from Avantis International, has a fresh new website at kubu-home.com boasting several added features and improved functionality. With smart-sensor technology for windows and doors set to become the big thing in the industry for 2021, this new website has been designed with the consumer in mind. The Kubu Kit calculator helps consumers and installer partners through the purchase process ensuring that they buy the right smart-sensor package for their home. Once they’ve purchased the Kubu Kit, activating the Kubu hub couldn’t be easier, download the Kubu app, plug in the Kubu hub, insert the sensor, much in the same way as inserting a SIM card into a mobile phone, and then follow the activation process through the app. But if installer partners or consumers have any queries, then the new website contains support pages within a dedicated help centre. For all other queries there’s direct access to Kubu and their team of specialist support engineers. A new marketing portal contains a wide range of support materials, but these can be customised for installer partners and here they can also request a showroom set-up, to ensure that they are perfectly presented when it comes to proven smart-sensor technology. Within the website there’s also an installer search facility, so as homeowners become increasing smart-led, they can find their local Kubu Pro Installer online. We're also investing heavily in marketing spend to drive homeowner leads directly to Kubu Pro Installers, all homeowners must do is insert their postcode and their nearest Kubu Pro Door Installer will be highlighted for them to request a call back. The purpose of this investment is to help ensure that homeowners ask for a Kubu smartsensor equipped door as standard. Lauren Bromley, head of brand for Kubu commented: ‘The new website fully supports our position as the pioneer in the sector with daily activations and a development programme that will help make us a major player in the smart home sector in the years to come. We have a substantial marketing programme behind us, to help make Kubu the trusted smart-sensor default in the window and door industry.’

“The objective of this document is to guide the reader towards the best solutions for making the doors in their buildings as biosafe as possible,” explains DHF’s Head of Commercial Operations, Patricia Sowsbery-Stevens. “Building managers and owners need to balance the requirements of security and safety, whilst at the same time, minimising the transference of infectious diseases through ‘touch’, such as Coronavirus, SARS and MERS.” The document is broken into four sections: powered pedestrian doors, doors which can be held open, doors which have to be touched, and solutions suitable for lever handles, knobs and similar, and provides the reader with a succinct guide including a summary of sections from the relevant European product standards. A helpful ‘door flow chart’ is also included offering multiple options on selecting the

MACHINERY

The UK’s Leading Glass & Glazing Newspaper

3D ALUMINIUM CHOOSES D&I WINDOW SOLUTIONS EMMEGI MACHINES AGAIN SCALES UP PRODUCTION WITH For Oxfordshire based 3D Aluminium, investment in the latest, most advanced fabrication machinery is part of its commitment to providing an exceptional service to its commercial clients. 3D is involved in flagship fenestration projects across London and the Home Counties, with a real emphasis on education, healthcare and both the new build and refurbishment sectors. It prides itself on the quality and precision of its windows, doors and curtain walling in Comar, Aluprof, Technal and Wicona profiles and on the efficiency of its operation. It makes sense then for 3D to choose a machinery partner like Emmegi (UK) which can guarantee a continually updated product range, with an emphasis on minimising cutting and machining tolerances and maximising productivity. 3D Aluminium has been an Emmegi (UK) customer since the machinery supplier was established in the UK 10 years ago and has equipped its factory with a comprehensive mix of Emmegi saws and machining centres. Now, 3D has upgraded its original Emmegi Phantomatic T3A 3-axes machining centre to a brand new Phantomatic X4 4-axes

model to add to the X4 it already owns, in order to expand capacity and increase its versatility. The fourth axis on the X4 model allows it to machine profile at any angle from 0 to 180°, in comparison with the T3A which can machine from above and from 90º to right and left from the vertical. This gives 3D more flexibility for machining on profile edges and on more complex profile shapes. Alongside the new machining centre, 3D has also invested in a new Emmegi Precision TS2 twin-head electronic saw, complete with a patented profile clamping device which, as the name suggests, achieves extremely precise cuts. Paul Batts, 3D’s Production Manager, says Emmegi’s quality and service meant 3D didn’t need to go anywhere else when it was looking to invest in new machinery. He explained: “We’ve always been impressed with the machines and with the service from the whole team. What’s particularly useful for us is the fact that Emmegi’s range is so broad that we know they will always have a machine available which exactly suits our needs.” More details at: www.emmegi.com and www.3daluminium.co.uk.

HAFFNER MURAT MACHINERY

Established domestic fabricator D&I Window Solutions is scaling up its operation with investment in numerous aluminium fabrication machines from industry specialists Haffner Murat. The largescale investment is a result of D&I Window Solutions’ strategic expansion into trade manufacture. David Saxon, Director of D&I Window Solutions, said: “We’ve seen a considerable increase in demand for aluminium bifolds in recent months and we spotted an opportunity to capitalise on the growth by expanding into the trade market. When it came to investing in the machinery we needed, Haffner Murat was the only choice for us.” David was already in discussions with Matt Thomas, Area Sales Manager at Haffner Murat about replacing some of D&I Window Solutions’ current PVC-U machinery when the decision was made to move into trade aluminium. David explains: “Matt prepared a full machinery package that would enable us to get up to volume quickly and easily. The advice and attention to detail from Matt and his team was invaluable and we

appreciated his knowledge, honesty and integrity throughout the buying process.” D&I Window Solutions will be investing in six new machines in total to set up their new trade production: an Adir C Fom Industrie CNC Machining Centre, a Panda Echo 300 Fom Industrie Pneumatic Saw, a Quota Base Fom Industrie 3m Discharge Roller Table, a Porter Fom Industrie 3m Infeed Roller Table, a Crab XL Fom Industrie Corner Crimper & Roller Table and a TT 405 Haffner Murat Double Mitre Saw. All machines deliver superior automation, high quality production and exceptional efficiencies. They will be installed in February 2021, following Covid-19 guidelines throughout. D&I Window Solutions is based in Barnsley,

South Yorkshire. Since it was founded in 2010, the company has grown in size and reputation to become one of the go-to fabricators when it comes to windows and doors in the region. With its commitment to exceptional standards – and use of Haffner Murat machines – it seems it is only a matter of time before it gains the same reputation for high-quality trade products too. Haffner Murat was recently crowned joint winners of the Machinery Supplier of the Year at the National Fenestration Awards 2020. The honesty and expertise of the Haffner Murat team and testimonials from people such as David Saxon show why it was such a worthy winner. Tel: 01785 222421 www.haffnermurat.com

MODPLAN INVESTS FOR ITS NEXT STAGE OF GROWTH Trade fabricator Modplan has just completed a largescale investment in 12 new fabrication machines from Avantek to support its next stage of growth. The machines have been installed across Modplan’s multiple production facilities enabling the company to continue to deliver the outstanding quality and efficiencies that support its customers businesses. Heidi Sachs, Managing Director of Modplan, said: “There were two reasons for the investment. Firstly, we wanted to update machines that were reaching their end of life and replace them with more technologically advanced models. Secondly, we wanted to expand our operations. Our overall goal was to ensure that we could continue to offer

32

the best in product quality with exceptional manufacturing efficiencies.” The machines include quad welders and corner cleaner, 5 head fully automatic welder, 4 headed fully automatic welders, two-head uni welders, bead saws and corner transom cleaners. The machinery is part of a wider programme of investment for Newport-based Modplan, which has included setting up a dedicated factory for its popular Flush Sash Windows and an internal Control Hub that gives realtime information on the status of every order in all its manufacturing sites. The investment across the business reflects Modplan’s ongoing commitment to its customers. Heidi commented: “Quite

simply, we are nothing without our customers and everything we do is driven by what they need. It’s why we planned the

investment and installation meticulously for a seamless integration into the business. We continue to set stringent KPIs across the business and monitor them to ensure they are met. And it’s also why we rolled out the internal Control Hub to maintain our schedules for improved customer communications.” It all means Modplan offers a reassuring level of reliability that its customers appreciate. Modplan’s customer focus is refreshing and is one of the many reasons that it has been in business for nearly 50 years. And despite the Covid-19 pandemic, the company is gearing up for its next phase of growth. Tel: 01495 246844 – www.modplan.co.uk

CONSERVATORY OUTLET COMPLETES FACTORY EXPANSION Leading UK manufacturer, Conservatory Outlet Ltd, has officially completed a 10,000 sq ft factory expansion as part of a four-stage manufacturing investment. The Wakefield-based company, which produces cutting-edge home improvement products to a UK-wide network of retail partners, began the factory expansion in October 2020 and has used the additional space to implement a new state-of-the-art, £100,000 Distribution Centre. In response to record-breaking order figures over the past 12 months, the introduction of the Distribution Centre will allow for a higher volume of products to be stored and organised on site in a secure, weatherproof environment. As it continues to carry out over 200 monthly deliveries to home improvement companies across the UK, the expansion will see Conservatory Outlet increase its capacity and output by up to 20% in response to continued high demand. News of the completed factory expansion comes hot off the heels of a series of new machinery investments in late 2020, including the addition of a new ACT

Schirmer Cutting & Routing Machine, which has dramatically improved the precision levels and edge quality of Conservatory Outlet’s window profile. The coming months will see further investments made in the company’s Wakefield manufacturing hub, specifically with the addition of a new production line which is set to be installed before the end of April. Michael Giscombe, Managing Director at Conservatory Outlet, said: “When we unveiled our staged manufacturing investment back in September, we knew that the factory expansion would prove pivotal in ensuring we were able to meet the growing needs of our customers as they continue to see unprecedented levels of success. The new Distribution Centre will ensure that our teams are not only able to produce a higher volume of products, but crucially will provide the capacity needed to meet our increased delivery targets each week. “We fully intend to continue investing heavily in our manufacturing base as our customers continue to grow and flourish. As ever, we will continue to explore ways in which we can increase capacity and maintain lead times, and we’re supremely confident that the new production line we’re implementing later this spring will tick both of these boxes.”

CONSERVATORY OUTLET LAUNCH ONLINE DIGITAL SALES TRAINING A series of online sales training forums, designed to explore and share best practice within the home improvement industry, has been officially launched by Conservatory Outlet Ltd. The forums, which have been made available to sales professionals from across the Conservatory Outlet Network, were launched in direct response to the latest COVID-19 lockdown. With participants in excess of 100 across a number of sessions, all keen to discuss the latest tools and techniques to further improve their approach, the training has specifically outlined the Network’s approach to maximising sales potential online and harnessing the continued high demand for home improvement solutions across the UK. The launch of the sales training forums follows a similarly swift response to the initial lockdown in March 2020. Within days of the initial government announcement, Conservatory Outlet had unveiled a ‘stay at home’ online sales campaign which generated in excess of £4m in sales revenue. Andy Miller, Business Development Director at Conservatory Outlet, explains: “Having shifted towards a more onlinedriven sales approach across most of the past year, our sales teams are primed and ready to deliver exceptional results once again during this lockdown. Given the work we’ve done since last March, the latest

digital sales training has been much more about refining our sales strategy, rather than revolutionising it. We have some exceptional talent across the Network who will thrive on having the ability to spark ideas and discuss concepts through the forums, with the ultimate goal of driving sales revenue and conversions.” Nathan Price, Retail Sales Manager at Hazlemere Window Company, concludes: “Speaking on behalf of our sales team, I know the guys are feeling incredibly upbeat and motivated following the initial forums. In fact, on the same day as our first session, one of our sales professionals sold a large £10k order, citing the online training as a key determining factor. The conversations we’ve been part of have been really inspiring and, given everything we’ve learnt over the past 12 months, I’m confident we’ll be able to take our sales performance to an even higher level during this lockdown.”

TUFFX LAUNCHES ‘FRAMELESS’ INFINITY ALL GLASS ROOFLIGHTS

Designed and manufactured from startto-finish by Everglade Windows, MOD Series was launched in June 2019 and won the 2020 top prize after being named as a finalist in the latest awards. Jay Patel, aïr Brand Ambassador, says: “We’re delighted that aïr MOD Series has won Best Windows at the 2020 Build It Awards. The collection was launched in June 2019 and brings five unique products into one integrated system, allowing for easier installation, surveying and selling. “The win comes as great news to us as we prepare to launch new suited door options in 2021, which we hope will follow the success of the award-winning MOD Series windows. “Throughout the design and production process we managed to combine the highperformance engineering of aïr’s original products with the sleek and captivating design which allows homeowners to stay on trend, whilst maintaining outstanding energy efficiency.” All of the products in the collection feature a 70mm frame depth and are available in double and triple glazing options, with the polyamide thermal break technology delivering fantastic energy efficiency with U-values as low as 1.0 W/m2K – one of the lowest on the market for flush and heritage windows. aïr MOD Series consists of: MOD Contemporary, MOD Heritage, MOD Heritage Flush, MOD Flush, and MOD Tilt & Turn and is exclusively designed and manufactured by Everglade Windows. TuffX is starting 2021 with a bang – with the launch of a new All Glass rooflight in its popular Infinity range.

ON TREND COLOUR CHOICE FOR ALUK WINDOWS AND DOORS The owners of a stunning refurbishment in Whitstable Kent were right on trend when they chose the colours for the AluK windows and doors which have been installed throughout. Ultimate Grey and Illuminating Yellow have been declared as the Pantone Colours of the Year for 2021and that grey and yellow combination was used to create a striking contrast with the contemporary cladding and render. The owners had installed AluK products in their previous property and had been impressed with the quality, style and durability, particularly for a coastal location. They had no hesitation in choosing them again this time around; and worked with AluK fabricator Rhino Aluminium and installer SG Installations to complete the design and installation. The house had been standing empty for two years before work started and had been water damaged during that time, so all but a couple of walls were demolished as part of a complete, nine-month refurbishment. The aim was to make the most of the sizeable plot without having too much impact on the surrounding properties. Using the architect’s drawings, Rhino Aluminium recommended windows in AluK’s slim sightline 58BW system throughout, four tested, tried and trusted BSF70 bi-folding doors and a structurally bonded aluminium panel front door in a suited AluK 58BD frame. This specification enabled the owners to optimise the light coming into the house and garden room and open up the rear as much as possible to make the most of the garden.

Offering a sleek, contemporary take on the traditional rooflight, the new frameless-look All Glass Infinity rooflight is designed to give the appearance of a simple pane of glass resting on the roof ’s upstand. The outer pane has a black screen-printed ‘frame’ as standard, although any RAL colour can be requested on bespoke orders. This pane sits 20mm wider than the upstand it rests on, giving an elegant impression of the glass ‘floating’ in place. The new All Glass rooflights can be ordered in both standard and bespoke sizes, manufactured using 6mm clear toughened safety glass and with a high-class polished edge finish as standard. Blue-tinted toughened safety glass can also be requested for bespoke orders. All units are available in either double or triple-glazed options, are argon gas filled and benefit from thermal super spacer technology. Best of all for installers, as with all the rooflights in TuffX’s Infinity range, installation is fast and straightforward. The unit is ready outof-the-box and is simply slotted on to the upstand, sealed and then finished off internally. TuffX customers will be able to order the All Glass Infinity rooflight from January, with standard stock size rooflights available for dispatch within three to four working days. “We’re always looking for innovative ways to bring customers the newest, most elegant glass solutions for their homes,” said TuffX’s Managing Director Graham Price. “And we’re really proud to be adding frameless-look, All Glass rooflights to our popular, hasslefree Infinity range.” “Our Infinity rooflights range includes everything from framed fixed rooflights and walk-on glass floors to – now – a frameless ‘floating’ glass rooflight. All delivered quickly and ready to drop into place easily.” “We’re constantly thinking up new and exciting ways to offer our customers the best in modern aesthetic design and quality. We can’t wait to see the first All Glass Infinity rooflights in place, changing the way rooflights look and bringing them bang up to date with a new look for the New Year.” www.tuffxglass.co.uk

The large expanses of glass meant the thermal efficiency of the AluK windows and doors was paramount to ensure that the house could comply with Part L1A of the Building Regs. Double glazed, the BRE Green Guide A rated 58BW windows and BSF70 bi-folds achieved U-Values of 1.4W/m2K. Andrew McCann from Rhino Aluminium commented: “We worked with the owners from a very early stage in the project so that they could manage the project and the budget as effectively as possible. One key recommendation we made was to upgrade the entrance door powder coating to a textured finish. The entrance to any property is the focal point of the exterior and particularly in this stunning yellow, so a textured finish Rhino door added a touch of distinctive elegance." ANGLO EUROPEAN CONFIRMS STRONG REINFORCEMENT STOCKS AS GLOBAL STEEL SHORTAGE REACHES CRISIS POINT Anglo European Group, the UK’s foremost supplier of galvanised frame reinforcement for window and door fabricators, has responded to mounting reports of a global crisis in the supply of steel, by assuring its customers that the company has taken significant steps to guarantee stocks for at least 6 months, with negotiations continuing for the third quarter of 2021. Global shortages and consequent price increases have been caused by what has been called a ‘perfect storm’ in market conditions that include fluctuations caused by Covid-19 as well as international politics, a return to pre-pandemic automotive production volumes; and China becoming a nett importer of steel for the first time in a decade. Further, iron ore costs are at a nine-year high with both planned and emergency steel mill outages also contributing. Against this backdrop, the World Steel Association (www.worldsteel.org) whose members represent 85% of global steel production, predicts demand for finished steel to increase by 4.1% in 2021. Underlining these issues are increases in the global price of

raw steel that will amount to almost 80% between September 2020 and April 2021. Anglo European Group CEO Paul Sullivan says that he and his team have been extremely concerned about the volatility in the steel sector for some time and have put plans in place to protect the company’s fabricator customers: “We have been supplying steel reinforcement to the UK window and door industry for more than 30 years and the current market conditions are without doubt the most volatile that we have experienced in that time,” explained Sullivan. “Core material price increases are substantial and changing daily, and these will have to be passed on as they take place,” he continued. “However, the key issue is continuity of supply. To ensure that our customers do not experience potentially severe disruption to their production output caused by shortages of steel reinforcement, we have secured supplies at least until July 31st 2021, with negotiations at an advanced stage for the second half of the year.” Anglo European Group continues to manufacture all of its own products, including reinforcements, couplers and bay poles for all leading PVC-U systems, at

the company’s two-acre site in Manchester. “We manufacture all of our own products to ensure that they enjoy consistently high quality at least in line with systems companies’ own standards, backed by a 10year guarantee,” added Sullivan. A BEAUTIFUL BLACK TUDOR RESIDENCE Sussex-based Nuglaze Home Services recently completed a replacement window and door project with Residence 9, in a period home with true Tudor detailing, including leaded top lights, structural corner posts and two oriel bay windows, all in the No.10 Black finish. In years gone by such installations were the domain of timber only and it is only with the introduction of R9, part of The Residence Collection, that this traditional material has been challenged. R9 remains the only true timber casement alternative window as this project shows and all the windows, doors and ancillaries were supplied by locally based manufacturer,

Tradesmith. The unique corner property featured two oriel bay windows, an upstairs balcony and door and other unique glazing features, which had to be completely sympathetic to the fabric of the building. Authentic butt joints, the use of black monkey tail handles and peg stays, also added to the period nature of this unique property. Sarah Hitchings, sales and marketing director of The Residence Collection commented: ‘This unique Tudor type property is the perfect showcase for R9, with the dual colour option of No.10 Black and Grained White featured throughout. It also proves that we are more than a credible

alternative to timber, yet with the longevity, green credentials, and energy efficiency properties of PVCu. She continued: ‘With consumers looking to enrich their homes with a better living space, there’s never been a better time in which to look at our valued added systems and outstanding marketing assets to help close more sales with better margins.’ For further information please visit www.residencecollection.co.uk and www.residencecollectiontrade.co.uk. STUDENT HALLS – BUT NOT AS YOU KNOW THEM: EDGETECH EXCELS ON STUNNING DANISH PROJECT From a bird’s eye view, it looks like a meandering path through a leafy city park. But get a bit closer, and you realise it’s actually a building – one of the most ambitious, spectacular and sustainable buildings Scandinavia has ever produced. BaseCamp Lyngby is a 415,000 square-foot student accommodation block in Copenhagen, Denmark. It’s a winding, undulating structure with an 800-metre running and walking track, grass, plants and trees covering the entirety of its roof. Made of glass and facades in three different shades of oak, the building itself contains a total of 786 apartments, 639 of them for students, 48 for retired residents. Completed to serve Copenhagen’s Lyngby University of Technology, the project took just two and a half years. The structure is made out of trapezoidal modules stacked to different heights, allowing for the sloping walkway on its roof. But it’s not just impressive to look at it – it’s also been designed to put cost-effectiveness and sustainability at the forefront. The building’s ventilated curtain wall was insulated with rock wool and clad with slabs made of pressed volcanic basalt rock from Rockpanel, while its green roof is covered in solar panels to generate electricity. Any rain that falls on the structure is disposed of via evaporation, reducing the ambient temperature and strain on the sewer system. It required more than 4,000 IGUs, which had to conform to the irregular shape of the building – and that, combined with the need for outstanding thermal performance, made Super Spacer® T-Spacer™ Premium Plus the obvious choice. Danish IGU manufacturer Glaseksperten, who were contracted to work on the project, operate a fully-automated, state-of-the-art Super Spacer line. “Super Spacer is of key importance to Glaseksperten in supplying quality products which also ensure we are a leading company in economical and ecological terms”, comments Sales Manager Jesper Hønning. “The fully automated continuous application of spacer from the reel saves time and money, while guaranteeing top-class product quality.” Chris Alderson, Edgetech Managing Director, comments: “We’re absolutely delighted to see Edgetech products used in such a stunning building. “Scandinavia is a global pioneer in sustainable construction, and a major growth market for warm-edge technology. “We’re confident that Super Spacer® T-Spacer™ Premium Plus will offer the building’s residents outstanding performance for many decades to come.” For more information, please call + 44 (0) 2476 639931 or visit www.edgetechig.co.uk.

NEW BFRC VIDEO EXPLAINS WHY NOISE REDUCTION IS SOMETHING TO SHOUT ABOUT The British Fenestration Rating Council (BFRC) has launched a new video, aimed at the trade, to highlight the benefits of its recently launched window and door Noise Reduction Rating Scheme. With the acoustic performance of fenestration a rising priority for homeowners and specifiers, the video, which can be found at www.bfrc.org/noise-reduction, explains how the new BFRC labelling scheme can help systems houses, manufacturers and installers illustrate the proven noise-reducing credentials of their products, ensuring that they stand out from the competition. Lis Clarke, BFRC Operations Director, said: “The new video highlights how verifying acoustic product performance with the BFRC Noise Reduction Rating Scheme can benefit those in the trade. “Reducing noise pollution created by roads, railways and air traffic can greatly increase our sense of wellbeing and the correct specification of windows and doors can reduce the impact of noise significantly. As a result, acoustic performance is front of mind for homeowners, specifiers and installers and as the video states: ‘If you’re not proving the acoustic performance of your products, you could be missing out’.” Best-known as the trusted provider of the energy ratings labelling system for windows and doors, BFRC unveiled the independently verified Noise Reduction Rating Scheme in August 2020. Launched in response to homeowner-demand for higher levels of quality assurance, the scheme provides evidence, via the simple and highly recognised ‘rainbow’ scale, that windows and doors not only ‘look the part’ but can also offer proven noise reduction performance. With leading systems supplier, Deceuninck, the first major industry brand to sign-up and other companies currently undergoing the certification process, BFRC believes the Noise Reduction Rating Scheme can significantly boost sales for product manufacturers and installers. Lis Clarke added: “The ability to prove the acoustic performance of windows and doors, as well as their energy performance with BFRC ratings, is an invaluable selling tool for the industry. We hope the new video makes it clear that this is really something to shout about.” www.bfrc.org

The move follows a sustained period of growth for the agency, which specialises in the fenestration and construction industries. The brand-new office facility will aid Purplex’s rapid expansion plans and can accommodate 150 plus additional employees. It will also feature a TV/ recording studio and dedicated training centre – and it will become the first net-zero carbon office in the South West. “Purplex has grown exponentially in recent years, producing fantastic results for customers, and this investment is testament to the demand for our services,” said Andrew Scott, Purplex’s MD. “The new office will give us the space to continue our upward trajectory and grow each area of our operation – from PR and digital marketing to web design and video production. “But we also want to secure the future of the business too, which is why we will provide the next generation with training and are committed to climate change, sustainability and bio-diversity.” Currently based at the headquarters of parent company the Ascot Group, which also includes award- specialist data supplier Insight Data and Business Leader, the UK’s leading B2B media company, Purplex plans to expand to 200 staff in the next three years. “This is now the third building in the Ascot Group’s office estate and the additional office was vital to Purplex’s future growth,” added Andrew. “The close proximity to the rest of the Ascot Group also means we can maintain strategic partnerships with fellow group businesses, and provide a world class marketing, media and technology company.” For more information, visit www.purplexmarketing.com or call 01934 808132.

YOUGOV SURVEY REVEALS PARENTS’ FENESTRATION INDUSTRY INSIGHTS

GQA, GGF AND FENSA GIVE THEIR ASSESSMENT Hot on the heels of news that the Universities Minister believes the education system is too geared to directing young people onto courses that do nothing to prepare them for later life, a YouGov survey* commissioned by GQA Qualifications has revealed that parents tend to agree. The nationwide survey of just over 1,000 parents with school-age children has brought to light some fascinating insights into their current attitudes towards university attendance, vocational training, careers and qualifications, alongside their wider perception of the fenestration industry. Over 60% of respondents agreed that for decades we have been recruiting too many young people onto university courses that do nothing to improve their life chances or help with their career goals. In addition, over 75% agreed that vocational training, careers and/or vocational qualifications could be beneficial to young people as an alternative career path to going to university. For GQA, the fenestration industry’s leading awarding body, what the survey reveals about parents' perceptions of the availability of advice about the vocational routes is particularly interesting. Only 24% believe there is sufficient advice readily available: a direct challenge for those who want to raise awareness of alternatives to further education.

for whom this country seems to be creating the 'perfect storm'. On the one hand we have an explosion in university courses from which neither young people nor society benefit. And on the other hand is a commonly held belief that advice concerning vocational routes is not readily available. We need to be doing more to tackle this situation. In the fenestration industry, business leaders need to get the message out there that help is at hand for young people, and that vocational training, careers and qualifications are viable alternatives to university for them. This is one of the key roles for the Building Our Skills – Making Fenestration a Career of Choice campaign, and I would urge as many industry employers and other bodies as possible to support the work it is doing. "I am, however, heartened by the survey revelation regarding how the fenestration industry is perceived by the parents questioned. Over half of respondents were not averse to their children one day entering this industry. I would hope that as the reputation of the industry continues to improve year on year, more and more parents would encourage their children down this route when they are of employable age. More parents taking part in the survey agreed with the idea of the fenestration industry being a potential career path for their child than those who did not. This is certainly welcome news."

Commenting on this point, Mick Clayton, GQA's Chief Executive Officer said: "I am concerned for young people

During a recent presentation of the YouGov survey results with Mick Clayton, representatives of the GGF and FENSA also gave their feedback. John Agnew, GGF Managing Director said: "There is a perceived lack of value in the notion of ‘apprenticeships’ in modern society, compared with years gone by. In the past an apprenticeship was a gateway to a successful career with progression and the appropriate rewards. Today, it is often looked on

as a means to access cheap labour, and is undervalued. If we could address this and change the perception of apprenticeships then this would help us to attract more people to the industry as a career choice. Ultimately it would be great to have more legislation to improve standards in the industry." Chris Beedel, FENSA's Director of Membership added: "The need for a far-reaching careers service is demonstrated clearly by this survey. Parents clearly support the vocational careers route, but do not have anywhere near enough information available to them to make informed decisions. This is something we as an industry need to do more to support. We can all do more to raise awareness of the industry. It is why FENSA is so fully behind the BOS's ‘Inspiring the Future' campaign to send glass and glazing staff into schools to talk about the industry. It is a positive move and one in which we encourage as many people as possible to get involved." Anda Gregory Managing Director, GGF Commercial who also sits on the GQA board as a FENSA representative said: "There has been an issue since polytechnics started to become university campuses. Parents clearly understand that not all children are academic and they value the vocational route. The results of this survey demonstrate that clearly." More information on GQA is available at www.gqaqualifications.com. * All figures, unless otherwise stated, are from YouGov Plc. Total sample size was 4677 adults, of which 1,011 were parents with children 18+ or younger. Fieldwork was undertaken between 5th - 7th August 2020. The survey was carried out online. The figures have been weighted and are representative of all UK adults (aged 18+).

RIGHT TO REGENERATE PROPOSALS COULD FAVOUR CUSTOM BUILDERS Empty garages, council houses and land could be a thing of the past under new proposals launched by the government this week. The proposals would allow individuals or communities to challenge councils to release land and empty buildings for development. Housing secretary Robert Jenrick said new ‘right to regenerate' proposals would make it easier for councils, or any public body, to call for the release of land for redevelopment. "We are cutting through red tape so that communities can make better use of available land and derelict buildings, which means more new homes, businesses and community assets. Millions of people will now be able to buy that empty property, unused garage or parcel of land and turn it into something good for them and their community."

Under the proposals, public bodies would need to have clear plans for land in the near term. If the land is kept for too long without being used, they would be required to sell it. The National Federation of Builders said the proposals were positive but stressed strong primary legislation would be needed to ensure councils adhered to any new rules. Mr Jenrick said the new process would be fast and simple and that he would act as an arbiter to ensure fairness and speedy outcomes in all cases. NFB housing and planning head Rico Wojtulewicz added: "The government needs to find a mechanism for setting the price for public land to give local communities the chance to bid and one which would give weight to the social value of a project." National Community Land Trust Network chief executive Tom Chance described the new proposals as a "gamechanger". But

ODL EUROPE INVESTS FOR FURTHER GROWTH ODL Europe has just announced two large scale investments in its business that will support its ambitious growth strategy in 2021 and beyond. Nathan Barr, Managing Director of ODL Europe, said: “As a business, we focus on being a valuable partner for our customers. The investments we are making now will enhance our ability to do this.” The first investment is a new 1,200 tonne injection moulding machine. The machine will come online during quarter two of this year and will enable the company to run its 764 contemporary door frames in-house. The machine will also increase its capacity

to run larger tools that are currently located in other ODL facilities, which will further enhance manufacturing efficiencies. The business has also invested in a new order processing system from Oracle that will improve efficiencies for customers and the business itself by enhancing visibility and communication at every level. The system will be live from February this year. These investments are part of a wider strategy of growth for ODL Europe which has resulted in the appointment of four new senior personnel to further enhance the customer experience. 2021 will also

see ODL Europe launch three new composite doors into the market too. The first is the Guardsman Fire Door, which is the result of a six-figure investment in research and development. It looks set to revolutionise the fire door sector because it eliminates the unknown elements of a composite fire door’s performance and delivers tried and tested, consistent test results. Then there is the Moderne door, which taps into the trend for contemporary door design and offers elegant modern detailing throughout. Finally, the Deco door is a cottage door design that gives the sophisticated heritage styling that is so popular at the moment.

agreed with Mr Wojtulewicz that getting hold of land at an affordable price had been a huge barrier for community groups wanting to build affordable housing. The National Custom and Self Build Association said the new proposals should increase housing diversity. NCSBA spokesperson Duncan Hayes said: "This represents the opportunity of developing small sites for housing and boosting the local economy through using local SME housebuilders who tend to have the highest level of apprenticeships." He called for joined-up thinking where last month's brownfield development fund initiative could be harnessed by community groups and custom builders to support their regeneration plans. Fast bridging loan brokers Hank Zarihs Associates, said property development

lenders would back any measure which made it easier for independent builders to construct projects on small sites. Latest government figures show there were more than 25,000 vacant council-owned homes and over 100,000 empty council-owned garages in 2020. Current ‘right to contest' powers give the public the ability to request the sale of underused public land. However, since its introduction six years ago only one out of the 192 requests made were granted due to the owners' future plans for the land. The consultation opened on 16th January and closes on 13th March.

STEEL WINDOW ASSOCIATION MEMBERS ARE FULLY OPERATIONAL AND WE ARE HERE TO HELP AS ALWAYS The New Year has got off to a start no one expected – so it does not seem right to holler Happy New Year as we always like to do. Yet, we do need to look forward with positivity and hope; and things will get better!

Throughout the past few months, SWA has been the source of independent, comprehensive advice when members were busy trying to optimise and amend operations. We are still here to help so please do get in touch.

The architectural and building world is still moving fast and efficiently despite the challenges; and we are pleased to see all Steel Window Association manufacturing members and associate organisations continuing to be fully up and running. Sites are open and homeowners’ plans are coming to fruition.

There are always good reasons why a manufacturer or associate should become a member of The Steel Window Association (SWA). As well as having access to the latest product developments within the industry, members also receive information from organisations such as The Glass & Glazing Federation (GGF)

BUSINESS AS USUAL AFTER BREXIT SAYS APEER Apeer, which manufacturers Apeer composite doors and Lumi windows and doors at its Ballymena, Northern Ireland factory, says that despite coverage in the national press advising that the suppliers of fresh goods, especially, are facing difficulties in delivering produce to Irish retailers and caterers, deliveries of the firm’s Apeer doors and lumi windows to the UK mainland, are unaffected by Britain’s final exit from the European Union.

its market share during 2021: “Despite the best efforts of the pandemic sales of Apeer doors were ahead of target last year though of course, in a market that was turned on its head for everyone,” says Asa. “We grew sales, margin and market share by making a huge range of great doors but also in providing what we believe is the best marketing support in the industry. And we are increasing this further for 2021 to generate even more solid, qualified leads for our customers.”

Asa McGillian, Apeer’s Managing Director, says that whilst there are minor changes to administrative details in transporting doors and windows to its customers in England, Scotland and Wales, they have had no effect on its UK customers: “We have had plenty of time to think about and prepare for any changes that Brexit might make,” says Asa, “and I have always maintained that whatever problems that were created would be dealt with as a matter of course. The changes, ultimately, are relatively small and have no effect on our customers whatsoever. So much of what appears in the press is exaggerated.”

The firm is also launching an aluminium version of lumi, the window and door system distinguished by its edge-toedge glazing: “We have developed an aluminium version of lumi, which is what I believe aluminium has been waiting for,” quips Asa. “We believe that aluminium lumi is key to tapping into the demand for aluminium windows and doors and actually, the unique styling of lumi is perfect for homeowners and designers looking for a strong architectural bias,’ adds Asa.

The announcement comes as Apeer embarks upon a campaign to emphasise the company’s dominance in Britain and Ireland’s composite door market, and the launch of an aluminium version of its unique lumi window and doors system. Apeer is one of the UK and Ireland’s top composite door brands, with the company investing heavily to strengthen

MORLEY GLASS & GLAZING INCREASES VOLUME BY 50% Integral blinds manufacturer Morley Glass & Glazing has started the New Year with a 50% increase in volume compared with last year. Increased demand from existing customers and an influx of new customers has seen manufacturing capacity rise from an average of 2,500 to 3,500 integral blinds a week. Our five-year plan was to reach 3,500 blinds a week and it’s amazing that we’ve reached that figure despite the Government lockdowns and a six-week shutdown last year.

’TOUGH YEAR AHEAD - HOW MEMBERSHIP HELPS’ In these uncertain times why would you consider joining an Association such as Council for Aluminium in Building in 2021, What possible benefit would it offer your business? The Council for Aluminium in Building (CAB) was formed in 1994 by the bringing together of three existing Trade Associations; the Architectural Aluminium Association, the Patent Glazing Contractors Association and the Aluminium Window Association. Its members include consultants, fabricators, installers, systems companies and many specialist product supply and manufacturing companies. CAB became a company limited by guarantee in January 2006. CAB is the only UK and Ireland Aluminium in Building Trade Association with over 130 Members across the supply chain, offering support in both the commercial and home improvement supply chains. Carrying the badge of such a well established and well respected Association in the Construction Industry certainly helps when pitching for business but membership of CAB goes much deeper than this. For a business looking to join CAB or any Association that represents their part of any supply chain there are possibly three main key considerations: Recognition For your company to be placed in a membership listing alongside larger and well recognised industry players immediately boosts your status within the Industry and adds credibility. With this comes the pride of being a member of a team and the ability to ‘Wear the badge with pride’.

Advocacy. Important for the member that they have the ability to voice concerns about the Industry and, with their input with other Members, bring about change. An ‘All for One and One for All’ call which is a cornerstone of why associations are forming in the first place. The power to change an environment is stronger than at the individual level. Associations, such as CAB, are the hub where individuals organise their resources, plan their strategy, and assign action plans. Networking. Associations are the original social media network. Meet with likeminded professionals interested in the same issues as you, access content that enlightens and discover new connections that support your business. These are often not tangible reasons for joining an association, but by engaging within an associations’ network of members alliances can be achieved which could have tangible outcomes. The old adage rings true ‘You only get out what you put in’ when it comes to networking. Very powerful reasons to join an Association like CAB who recognise these cornerstones of inclusivity for its Membership, but, membership goes much deeper still: Access to Resources. CAB has long been recognised for its technical support within the Industry, the CAB Technical Team sit on many of the Industry decision-making committees and represent the Membership position on everything that influences the supply chain. These positions are gained within CAB Member Committees and Working Groups set up within the Association Membership and are open for any Member to attend. With CAB’s close involvement with UK standards and legislation comes the ability to be a single point of call for any Members questions when it comes to quotations or specifications. Benefits. Being a Member does offer tangible benefits was well such as access to free support lines for HR and tax issues, free marketing opportunities with your PR copy appearing in the Association ezine ‘A Window Into Aluminium’, also access to a Members Webinar Resource which keeps abreast of contractural and economic issues in the Industry. These are just a few of the benefits and key for CAB at the moment is to build more tangible resources for

Members as the Association continues to grow.

BETTER DATA, SAFER BUILDING: CPA LAUNCHES CONSULTATION ON NEW PRODUCT INFORMATION CODE

Initiatives A further benefit of being a Member of an Association like CAB is to be able to become involved in leading edge initiatives such as CABs’ very own ‘Closed Loop Recycling’ initiative. Open for any member who handles both pre consumer and post consumer scrap to join, the initiative encourages more aluminium ‘grade’ awareness so that a window extrusion that could have a life of fifty years or more, can be recycled back into a further window extrusion with no loss in characteristics and virtually no waste. The initiative also aims to keep more used aluminium in the UK and encourages a cyclical product life cycle. Likely to become legislation at some point in the future, the initiative offers members a strong negotiating base when pitching for new business within the industry. Training Stepping beyond Membership and reaching out to the thousands of Curtain Wall Installers across the UK, CAB have just launched a route to obtain a CSCS Skills card which is seen by main contractors as a recognised measure of professional competency on site. Members of CAB benefit from receiving some of this training at reduced costs. It is important to recognise that any Association belongs to its Members and the more influence that Members can bring into the Association, the further the Association will grow. The CAB Board of Directors is committed to grow the Association and continue to increase value for membership. With a new CAB Chief Executive shortly to be appointed to head up the dedicated CAB Team in Gloucestershire, 2021 will be a challenge but one the Association will rise to and ensure membership value continues to increase. Despite the pandemic, it is business as usual at CAB and staff are on hand at the offices to answer any aluminium fenestration related questions. Information is regularly updated on the CAB website at www.c-a-b.org.uk. For Association Membership enquires please contact Jessica Dean at the CAB offices by email jessica.dean@c-a-b.org.uk or telephone 01453 828851. By Adrian Toon - CAB Board Director

The Construction Products Association (CPA) is launching an industry-wide consultation into a new proposed Code for Construction Product Information (CCPI), to gather the views on the Code before it is formally launched later this year. The Code has been developed by the CPA’s Marketing Integrity Group (MIG), which was tasked with responding to the issues raised in Dame Judith Hackitt’s report ‘Building A Safer Future’, and the credibility challenge facing our industry following the Grenfell Tower fire. The report confirmed radical change was needed for construction products, particularly in the areas of testing, information and marketing. The Code, made up of 11 clauses, aims to set the benchmark for how product information is presented and marketed by manufacturers. A new microsite dedicated to this consultation - www.buildingsafely. co.uk - explains the background, and includes a specially written report on the new Code. It’s presented in an easy-to-read, digestible format for the industry to review and respond. The MIG’s work tackles shortcomings in ‘Product Information’ identified in Chapter 7 of the ‘Building A Safer Future’ report. Its work represents two years of open debate and discussion, and of engagement with various parts of the supply chain. It follows detailed analysis of the Call For Evidence survey in 2019, which attracted over 500 responses from across the industry. The survey confirmed that for product and performance information to be trusted, it must be Clear, Accurate, Up-to-date, Accessible and Unambiguous. These five points are the acid tests that now stand behind the 11 Clauses in the new Code. Download the Code for Construction Products Information at www.buildingsafely.co.uk and register to have your say. The consultation will open on 1st February and run until 31st March.

Speaking about the decision to postpone FIT Show until later in the industry calendar, event director Nickie West said: “It will come as little surprise to many that we have been in constant communication with the NEC to ensure

58

a safe event which delivers the best possible ROI for our exhibitors, and the best experience for our visitors. “The decision to postpone FIT Show 2021 from May until September is a proactive step that we have made in order to create a safer timeline for the industry to work towards. We know that there is an insatiable appetite to get back to faceto-face business. “We have taken many factors into consideration as part of this process, including the likely surge in demand for summer holidays and the 2022 Fensterbau timeline. We believe that FIT Show in the Autumn of 2021 will come at just the right time for the industry, steering the ship to reflect the industry’s V-shaped recovery. “The new dateline will see us open the show on a Sunday for the first time. This will create an ideal opportunity for busy installers to visit over the weekend if they are unable to attend during the week. This is something we have been asked to consider by our stakeholders in the past and an initiative we believe to be right for 2021”

Organisers have confirmed that FIT Show will revert to its usual May slot in 2023, following a biennial pattern thereafter. Nickie concluded: “The additional time that we now have before the show provides an opportunity to explore new content and feature ideas to enhance our proposition. We are already exploring new product focuses, such as our outdoor living feature, and will be implementing new hybrid event features that will extend the value of the show above and beyond the three physical days of the event. We are excited to announce these plans over the coming months. “I cannot wait to get back to FIT, reconnect with the industry, face-to-face, and see all of the latest products up close and in the flesh. FIT Show really is the main event where people come to see the best in the industry, to allow them to be the best in the business.” FIT Show is the UK’s number one, award-winning showcase for the glass, glazing, window, door, hardware and components industry. FIT Show will return to the NEC 26 - 28 September 2021, Halls 17, 18 & 19.

ULTION DELIVERS WEEKEND ORDERS ON MONDAYS

UAP INVESTS FOR EXPANSION IN 2021 Leading door hardware and locking systems specialist, UAP, is set to start 2021 with a schedule of new product launches, international expansion and more stockholding than ever before thanks to strategic planning and investment to ensure the company can meet demand in the year ahead. A leader in the sector celebrating 25 years in ironmongery and locking systems in 2021, UAP was quick to recognise the threat posed by COVID-19 and had begun to put measures in place to protect people and ensure operational continuity long before the start of the first lockdown. Thanks to the company’s agile response, it has achieved record sales since September and has a clear growth strategy in place for 2021. David Jennings, CEO of UAP explains: “We work closely with supply chain partners in China so we knew right at the beginning of the year that we needed to get ready for an extinction-level event. When I presented our business plan to staff in February it said one word: ‘survive’. “We’ve achieved the plan, in terms of both protecting our team and maintaining our commercial health, but we’ve also done much more than that. By responding quickly to changing public health and commercial conditions, leveraging our assets and focusing on continued innovation, we have put ourselves in the strongest possible position to drive growth in 2021 and offer the best possible service to our customers.” UAP began the process of enabling its team to work from home in February and revised its operations to allow uninterrupted dispatch of products on time, while introducing PPE, social distancing and team bubbles. The company procured its own PPE supplies to ensure all items meet high safety standards, and has been able to add the UAP Health Care Range to its existing door hardware, locking systems and locksmith machinery brands. “Like most companies, we had no experience of running a business in a pandemic,” David continues, “but, by putting people first and investing in adapting our operations we were able to remain a step ahead. Not only has there been high demand for our PPE supplies

Ultion orders placed over a weekend will now be delivered to customers on Monday. All telephone and on-line orders placed up until 1pm on a Sunday will be with locksmiths and installers ready for the working week. This also includes bespoke orders for keyed alike requirements. Brisant Secure, the hardware house behind Ultion, has a reputation in the industry for smashing standards and a series of firsts. Providing homeowners with extreme security needs to be 24/7, but until now locksmiths can wait days for a bespoke requirement, ordering on a Friday David Jennings

Nick Dutton, Brisant Secure CEO, comments: “One of the things we learned from 2020 was that even though businesses may be closed, burglars still burgle so locksmiths still need locks, and they need them quickly. We’re delighted to offer this new service to customers. If homeowners don’t have it, security becomes extremely important to them. That’s why we’ve created an extreme service to deliver extreme Ultion security. With many locksmiths featuring the term 24/7 in their business title, current service standards can make this impossible to achieve. We’re changing that.” As one of Britain’s fastest growing businesses, Brisant Secure recently appeared in the annual Sunday Times Virgin Atlantic Fast Track 100 for the second consecutive year. Brisant Secure has grown by providing homeowners with the extreme security they’ve always wanted. The Ultion family of locks was expanded this year to provide an Ultion secure solution for all situations. With a focus on extreme security and innovation, Brisant is launching two new locks: the Ultion 1* cylinder, and a new Ultion 3* product which will be available in the new year.

but we’ve been advising a number of our customers on Covid safety throughout 2020.” Tackling the safety, operational and commercial challenges of the pandemic was not UAP’s only focus in 2020. With the business adapted to continue serving customers while keeping everyone safe, attention turned to new product development and security of supply. David continues: “UAP has weathered two serious recessions before so we know that preparing for the recovery is critical and the only way to do that effectively is through investment. We also know that the pandemic, changes to the plating industry in China and Brexit are likely to affect supply chains as we begin 2021, so a key part of our investment has been in placing orders well ahead of time and increasing both our stockholding and warehouse capacity.”

ONE TOWN ONE TEAM! QUICKSLIDE EXTENDS ITS SUPPORT FOR BRIGHOUSE TOWN FOR TWO MORE YEARS

The company has already created an additional 25,000 sq ft of warehousing space on site at its Greater Manchester HQ, with an additional 35,000 fq ft due to be added to its assets in early 2021. It will begin the year with £8million of stock in the UK and its additional stock requirements for the first half of 2021 are already in production or en-route.

Northern Premier League side Brighouse Town AFC’s bold motto ‘One Town One Team’ confirms its commitment to the town whose name it bears. Similarly, Quickslide Windows believes that the sentiment also communicates its relationship with both the club and the town that is home to its head office and factory.

UAP will launch two new major product lines in Q1 2021, announce international expansion plans and extend its sales channels. It will also continue to grow by acquisition, with advanced talks already underway with two potential brands. The company predicts high demand across its Fullex, Firemongery, Intelligent Hardware, Locking Systems and Trade Locks brands and, with stockholding and supply chain certainty in place, it is ready to meet demand.

Which is why the firm has renewed its support as official partner and kit sponsor for the club for a further two years. After agreeing the deal, Quickslide Chairman Adrian Barraclough spoke of the close relationship that the firm and its employees

have with the club: “Brighouse is only a small place and supporting Brighouse Town has really helped us connect with the wider community,” says Adrian. “And that relationship manifests itself in very direct ways: When we were looking for fabricators to join us we made an announcement at one of the games and had applications coming through right after the full time whistle had blown.” The factory, offices and showroom of the Bradford Road, Brighouse window and door fabricator and VS specialist, are located just two miles from the club’s St Giles Road Stadium, where many Quickslide employees and local customers regularly turn out to show their support. Several Quickslide employees have also played for the club.

David adds: “Like everyone, we have been on a journey through the unknown in 2020 but, by leveraging our strengths, applying our knowledge and putting people first we’re entering 2021 stronger than ever.”

“We’re one of the largest employers in the area,” continued Adrian. “As we mainly sell to trade clients nationwide, having a close relationship with the local football club is an ideal way for us to maintain a good relationship with the town and its people, allowing us to communicate our values and commitment to them.”

BFRC CUTS THROUGH THE NOISE WITH NEW ACOUSTIC PERFORMANCE RATINGS Window and door manufacturers can now offer customers increased confidence in the acoustic performance of their windows and doors, thanks to a new, independently verified noise reduction rating scheme set to launch in August. BFRC, Europe’s leading ratings system for windows and doors, is launching the brand new noise reduction rating scheme, in response to homeowners who are increasingly demanding higher levels of quality assurance for their new windows and doors. Not only must new windows and doors look the part, homeowners also want full confidence that new products will meet their expectations, including proven noise reduction performance. Windows can play a vital part in reducing the level of noise entering the home, particularly for homes close to roads, railways or impacted by air traffic noise. With homes increasingly becoming peaceful retreats from a hectic outside world, making them quieter, more pleasant places to be can also improve wellbeing. The independently verified BFRC Noise Reduction Scheme will be a huge selling point for manufacturers, who will be able to show their customers how their windows and doors compare to the competition. The labels provide an easy

to understand system for homeowners, and in turn show a commitment to customer satisfaction, guaranteeing the quality of their product and ensuring they stand out from competitors. New labels have been designed for the scheme, using the BFRC’s highly recognised and trusted label system, giving an instantly recognisable comparison against another product’s acoustic performance, and providing installers and homeowners with evidence that window and door products will deliver as promised. Marketing materials have also been designed and will be made available for customers. “We’re delighted to launch our new Noise Reduction Scheme,” said Lis Clarke, BFRC’s Operations Director. “There’s been a huge amount of work involved in getting to this stage and it’s very exciting to see how the industry will take advantage of a new product coming to market. “It’s important that as a market leader we continue to innovate and provide new solutions to our customers that will help them increase sales. Being able to prove the acoustic performance of their windows and doors as well as proving energy performance with BFRC ratings is a huge boost for them and provides a genuine USP as to why their products should be used over those who make unsubstantiated claims. “We hope that as the industry comes out of lockdown they, like us, see the need to respond to ever changing consumer demands and stand out from the crowd. This is just the latest in a series of exciting new developments we have planned and we can’t wait to see the new scheme being used across the supply chain.”

HIGH PRAISE FOR STELLAR Stellar, the triple award-winning aluminium window and door system from Epwin Window Systems continues to prove a hit with installers due to its fastfit properties. The ease of installation is down to its unique pre-gasketed, knock-in beads that make fitting rapid and provides a high-level finish. The benefits of quick-fitting Stellar were reiterated by installer R Bell Construction who recently completed their first Stellar installation at a large domestic property in Surrey. Owner, Roy Bell said: “We’ve installed aluminium windows and doors for many years but Stellar is the first aluminium system we have fitted with knock-in beads. The products were so easy to fit and the level of finish was excellent.” He adds: “On other aluminium windows and doors, fitting the gasket and seal can be both cumbersome and fiddly to get an effective, tight seal. But with Stellar the knock-in pre-gasketed beads make the job quick, easy and accurate. It eliminates gaskets getting overstretched too, which can often happen on other products. After fitting Stellar, it’s fair to say I won’t be fitting anything else.” R Bell Construction purchased their Stellar windows and bifold doors through The Window Store in Swansea. The Window Store is a national trade counter network which offers an extensive range of window and door products direct to the trade and public. Richard Payne, Regional Manager at The Window Store, said: “We are delighted to have received another positive review on Stellar. Our customers appreciate how quick and easy Stellar is to fit, and it offers a unique proposition for installing aluminium windows and doors.” The flush aesthetics and slimline design of Stellar make for an easy sell into the consumer, something that Roy echoed having gained a further two jobs in the pipeline too. He said: “We have two more Stellar projects that we are confident in securing and look forward to fitting the product again.” The retail aluminium sector is resurgent and in Stellar, installers can give themselves a competitive edge due to its easy sell, fast fitting properties. It’s something more and more installers are realising. Tel: 0845 300 9356 www.stellaraluminium.co.uk

NEW QUICKSLIDE VEHICLES DELIVER GREATER EFFICIENCY AND QUALITY OF SERVICE Quickslide has bolstered the capacity of its nationwide fleet with the addition of four, brand new DAF 290CF 18-ton boxed vehicles, the latest in a series of investments by the West Yorkshire fabricator as it looks to continually improve the quality of its service and infrastructure. The new vehicles, which are linked to Quickslide’s EvoNET business management system, will introduce an even greater level of customer service to the fabricator’s nationwide customer base. EvoNET communicates directly with the vehicles’ TomTom satellite navigation system to provide the most efficient delivery route for the day and allows customers to keep track of their orders through automatic text message and email alerts, allowing them to plan their daily workloads more effectively. Representing a combined outlay of almost half a million pounds, the vehicles feature built in glass racks, 6-way cameras – including cameras located internally to monitor cargo – upgraded lighting and sign writing and the latest tail lifts that are designed to be tucked neatly away when not in use. Ben Weber, Quickslide’s managing director, commented: “The addition of the new DAF vehicles to our fleet will allow us to increase output with modern vehicles that are not just more reliable but also more aerodynamic and fuel efficient. “Thanks to full air conditioning, and mod cons that include a fridge and microwave, they will also provide a comfortable working environment for our drivers, who spend hours upon hours on the road delivering to our nationwide customer base, allowing them to relax in comfort during their well-earned rest periods. “And when they are on the road, the journey is much more efficient due to the fact that our new EvoNET management system – which integrates into our logistics department – can automatically arrange delivery drops into the most efficient order and plan a route accordingly with the vehicle’s TomTom device. “EvoNET has also paved the way for barcode scanning, not just on the factory floor but prior to despatch and at each delivery,” Ben continued. “It means that drivers are alerted if anything has been left off the vehicle before setting off on their journey, and if something is left on by mistake between stops. “Ultimately, it reduces the pressure on our drivers by helping to eliminate mistakes and when combined with our latest order tracking and SMS/email update services, provides an even greater level of service to our customers.” www.quickslide.co.uk

SURGE IN JOB OPPORTUNITIES WELCOMED BY GQA GQA welcomes news of a surge in job opportunities for glaziers, window fabricators and installers. Reported at www.fenews.co.uk, it is understood that total job posts in these categories were up by just over 111% between June and September.

in activity in the fenestration sector that we began to have once the restrictions of lock-down were lifted in June. There has been plenty of hearsay about the rise in work, and it is very encouraging that this report bears out what is being surmised generally. The growth in demand for glaziers, window fabricators and installers is great news. It also underlines the need we have to bring more people into the fenestration industry and to upskill existing industry employees in order to raise standards and support career development.

Commenting on the rise in opportunities in the fenestration sector, Shaun McAllister Director for GQA Qualifications, the industry’s leading awarding body said: “This independent report provides evidence to support the impression of a resurgence

“The timing could not be better for our partners, the Building Our Skills - Making Fenestration a Career of Choice campaign. Building Our Skills has just announced the launch of a practical training programme. The programme includes

ALUPROF UPGRADES WINDOW PERFORMANCE Aluminium has the benefit of being lightweight, strong, resistant to corrosion and easy to form into complex shapes, so perfect for production into windows and doors. Over the decades, as thermal insulation of our building infrastructure has increased through regulation, we have seen resin thermal breaks move to ‘roll-in’ polyamide strips amongst other developments. Aluprof was the first systems company in the world to incorporate ‘aerogel’, a material with exceptional thermal insulation, into the polyamide insulated ‘MB-86’ aluminium window system, which offers specifiers frame insulation down to a staggering frame value, Uf, of just 0.5 W/m2K. A premium product, the ‘MB-86 Aero’ has been specified on a wide range of projects, and now Aluprof have used their design expertise to look at a value added proposition on one of their most popular window systems, the ‘MB-70’. One of the main driving forces in the fenestration industry today is the ability to reach a net zero carbon target by 2050. In fact in June 2019 the UK became the first major economy in the world to pass a net zero emissions law. The aim is to be carbon neutral in our energy needs in our building stock as well as ensuring that 100% of all building processes will also operate at net zero by 2050. Aluprof continues to stay ahead of the game by offering not only their established range of passive house products, but also through increasing the energy performance of their most popular systems like the ‘MB-70’ aluminium window and door system.

“For anyone considering entering the fenestration industry or wondering about whether they should seek out training to further enhance their skills I would say now is a great time to go for it. They are welcome to talk to the team here at GQA Qualifications who will be more than happy to provide advice and answer any questions on the best route forwards or directly to the team at Building Our Skills.” Further information: www.buildingourskills.co.uk www.gqaqualifications.com

REHAU MOURNS THE LOSS OF COMPANY FOUNDER HELMUT WAGNER

Hardware specialist VBH have announced the sad news that Des Turnbull, until recently the Area Sales Manager for the Northern Counties, passed away in hospital on the morning of Saturday 16th January. “Des was an integral part of the VBH team for the best part of 2 decades before retiring last February. He was very well respected and much liked by his customers, suppliers, and all at VBH.

REHAU is mourning the loss of company founder and honorary president Helmut Wagner. He sadly passed away last Sunday at the age of 95 in Switzerland surrounded by his family. The news of the death of the popular founding father, who was highly committed to the end, has moved REHAU employees around the globe. "The great sympathy for the passing of our father comes from many regions of the world. We are very touched by this as a family," says Jobst Wagner, President of the Supervisory Board. It shows how great the legacy will be that Helmut Wagner has left behind "as one of the pioneers of modern industry, as a courageous creator and unwavering visionary", says Wagner. "We will honour the memory of Helmut Wagner by resolutely continuing his impressive work. His entrepreneurial spirit will continue to guide us in the future," says the President of the Supervisory Board. Helmut Wagner has been shaping the world of plastics since 1948 and has thus given important stimuli to an entire industry. The founding of the company in the city of Rehau, Upper Franconia, Germany, marked the beginning of the manufacture of products made of polymer materials and thus the success story of a family-owned company that is still strongly characterised by the pioneering spirit of the company founder. After five decades of successful development of the company, Helmut

Wagner handed over the management of the corporation to his sons in 2000: Jobst Wagner became Chairman of the Supervisory Board and Dr. Veit Wagner Vice Chairman. The third generation are already active in shaping the family business. In 2015, Rehau city council paid a special tribute to the founder of REHAU: Helmut Wagner was appointed the first honorary citizen since the end of the Second World War.

“Des was very knowledgeable, and enjoyed passing on his expertise. He was particularly helpful to newcomers to our industry, helping them understand some of the vagaries of window and door hardware. He was always quick with a joke and will be well missed by his friends across the whole of VBH. “Des and his wife, Cath, often combined their holidays with charity work, frequently taking much needed equipment to under-funded schools. “Our sympathies are with Cath and their family and friends at this very sad time. We will miss our friend Des dearly.”

Today, REHAU is an internationally operating family business with 20,000 employees at more than 170 locations worldwide. “We owe this in particular to the vision and courage of Helmut Wagner," says William Christensen, CEO of the REHAU Group. "In deep mourning and sincere gratitude for the achievements of the company's founder, the REHAU family is especially united in these days," Christensen said.

To do this Freefoam are announcing a photo competition, to find the best Transformations using Freefoam fascia, soffit or cladding. With a huge variety of projects happening across the UK, from using Fortex cladding to replace old tired wall coverings, installing smart new grey fascia to replace standard white PVC and refurbishing old summer houses to create warm and comfortable home offices – the list is endless! We want to see how homes have been transformed, with before and after photos to illustrate the dramatic changes. It’s a simple idea, and we just want to showcase peoples aspirations and ideas for their homes, and working with our installers together can create tremendous transformations. And it’s something they should be proud of. We’ll be promoting details on social media, and be offering a prize each month ranging from vouchers for Screwfix and Tool Station, to money off Freefoam products. To enter go to our Facebook page https://www.facebook.com/FreefoamUK/ or email ukmarketing@freefoam.com. We believe 2021 will be the year of the Transformation, and we want to share how vision, ambition and aspiration can come together.

There is no doubt that underlying market conditions are contributing to Fentrade’s sales growth. There is also no doubt its reputation for reliability, service and quality is also playing a critical part. Tel: 01633 547787 www.fentradealuminium.co.uk

LINIAR RECEIVES BPF RECOGNITION FOR PPE SUPPORT The COVID-19 pandemic has impacted our communities, our industry and the entire world, presenting challenges which have not been experienced before. In March 2020, whilst shutters were down and showrooms darkened, industry-leading PVCu systems company Liniar turned its downtime into an opportunity to make a difference with the provision of personal protective equipment (PPE) to key workers.

Now, almost a year since the pandemic began, Liniar has been recognised by the British Plastics Federation (‘the BPF’) in conjunction with The Worshipful Company of Horners (‘the Horners’) for its work during these challenging times.

INSULBAR RE-LI SCORES DOUBLE CLIMATE POINTS New insulating bar from foamed recycled polyamide: Ensinger combines superior insulating effect with an outstanding environmental footprint. With insulbar RE-LI, Ensinger is presenting its greenest insulating bar for thermal

breaks in aluminium systems for windows, doors and façades. Thanks to the use of unmixed, recycled polyamide, 92 percent fewer fossil fuels are used during manufacture compared with a conventional bar, the CO2 emissions drop by 91 percent, and water consumption drops by 78 percent*. “In addition, foaming of the recycled polyamide improves the insulating effect of the glass fibre reinforced material. The lambda value is a mere 0.21 W/(m⋅K)**”,

With insulbar RE-LI, Ensinger optimises the insulating bar in two respects: It consists of 100 % unmixed recycled polyamide, which is foamed in a special manufacturing process and thereby significantly improves the lambda value. Picture courtesy of: Ensinger GmbH.

says Matthias Rink, Sales Director for insulbar at Ensinger. “So thanks to the low thermal conduction capacity, insulbar RELI also reduces energy consumption and CO2 emissions during its entire service life.”

CO2 reduction in a window with insulbar RE-Li compared with a window with a conventional insulating bar: Even during manufacture, CO2 emissions are reduced by 91 percent. Thanks to the foaming of the recycled polyamide, the insulating effect also increases, which pays off throughout its service life – both for the environment and financially – through the conservation of energy and reduction in CO2. Manufacturers can thereby enhance the ecological and climate-friendly properties of their aluminium systems by switching to insulbar RE-LI. The recycled polyamide, which is foamed uniformly during its extrusion, has high stability thanks to glass fibre reinforcement. The unbroken, smooth outer shell permits perfect anodizing and powder coating. Processing is similar to that for insulating profiles made from solid polyamide 66.

For several decades now, the material polyamide has proven itself in sustainable thermal breaks in the metal frames of windows, doors and façades. insulbar RE-LI combines double the climate benefits with high cost-effectiveness. CREATE YOUR OWN INSTALLER NETWORK SUPPORT PACKAGE

WITH UBOOM

The launch of UBoom to the Fenestration Industry late last year has given those who manage networks of installers an opportunity to create their own tailored support packages. Network managers can choose from a range of products in the UBoom marketplace and have them incorporated into their own branded affiliate site to support the needs of those who buy their products. Incorporating products and services chosen specifically for the sector, UBoom offers a vast range of business support tools, toolkits and free to download advice and information to help smaller businesses in the industry. From business management tools, employment contracts, training schemes,

marketing, sales, social media, telephone answering services, photography, website review audits, feedback programmes, showroom support and much much more, UBoom pulls together the most appropriate and affordable support and presents it all in one place. Whether it’s creating a virtual showroom or sourcing the right software for selling windows and doors online, or getting hold of an easy invoicing system UBoom has done all the hard work and identified the ideal solutions for installers from a range of innovative independent suppliers.

“MANAGERS CAN CREATE BESPOKE SUPPORT PROGRAMMES FOR THEIR CUSTOMERS IN AN INSTANT.” Installer network managers can choose from this range of products to create dedicated and specific support programmes for their customers in an instant, and with

new suppliers and new products being added all the time, the range of support tools available is going to continue to grow. UBoom is the latest initiative from Inside the Box Marketing. Commenting on the launch of UBoom, Director Chris Globe says: "Over the years it has become clear when talking to installers and SMEs in the fenestration industry that they have all the same business needs and challenges as large-scale companies. However, so many of the business systems and support tools in the market are often too expensive and not necessarily appropriate for them. We believe that solutions that are specifically tailored to the sector, hand-picked, affordable are something that installers and SMEs will truly benefit from”.

“A BESPOKE SUPPORT PROGRAMME FROM UBOOM IS A GREAT WAY TO HELP CUSTOMERS BECOME STRONGER AND MORE PROFITABLE.” "I'm thrilled that we have already had so much interest expressed by managers of fenestration industry membership groups and installer networks. They see UBoom as a great way to help their customers become stronger and more profitable by accessing the toolkits on the platform. The way the software is designed enables us to create a bespoke marketplace for them tailored specifically to the needs of their members. No two network managers will choose the same group of products”. "At a time when supporting customers is even more important than ever, the team

GGF ISSUES REVISED GUIDANCE ON IN HOUSE SELLING DURING LOCKDOWN IN ENGLAND The Glass and Glazing Federation (GGF) has issued revised guidance for Home Improvement companies and sub-contractors operating in England during the current National Lockdown, following confirmation from Government officials of a new interpretation of the guidance for in-house selling during the pandemic. The general Guidance on the subject of sales, published on the Government’s website, as detailed below remains the same and is unlikely to change for the next few weeks. “Door-to-door sales should not take place, and sales activities should be conducted remotely (such as by phone, online, or mail).” The slightly more relaxed interpretation of the rules around the restrictions may allow for sales people to enter the home, if necessary but it is vital for all individuals who are entering a property to ensure they are following the Safe Guidance and social distancing guidelines. John Agnew, GGF Managing Director commented on the change, “Government officials have recently confirmed directly to the GGF that if selling and surveying in England cannot be done remotely, then companies and their sub-contractors can conduct pre-booked in-house sales and surveys, if carried out within the Safe Guidance.” The GGF recommends that consumers are offered a remote appointment in the first instance and that advises companies, who cannot sell or survey remotely to ensure they do so, in a controlled and measured manner. John Agnew added, “The GGF recommends that any in-house selling activity should start in February to ensure a responsible and gradual industry approach.” The GGF also advises that all individuals entering a home to carry out work should use the NHS Test and Trace App which can be downloaded from the NHIS website

FENSA SURVEY REVEALS ATTITUDES OF UK’S LEADING INSTALLERS

A NEW SURVEY UNDERTAKEN BY FENSA ADDS SUBSTANCE TO ANECDOTAL EVIDENCE REGARDING MARKETPLACE TRENDS

John Agnew ,GGF Managing Director

https://covid19.nhs.uk/. On the subject of door to door canvassing, the Government is clear that this activity should not be undertaken at present and this has been underlined by the GGF. In a statement issued to its Membership, the GGF highlights that local authorities in England can issue a prohibition notice on businesses. The GGF’s Primary Authority Partnership confirmed “the (current) level of risk to public health met the requirements for local authorities to be able to issue prohibition notices to businesses as allowed by the regulations”. Companies should be mindful of this possible sanction if they ignore the advice and continue to canvass. The Health and Safety Executive (HSE) is responsible for enforcing COVID secure guidance in terms of how you are working. The HSE has the power to issue an enforcement notice on any business that is not operating in accordance with COVID secure guidance creating a potential risk to public health and safety. With the restriction on in-house selling slightly relaxed, and if the pandemic health statistics show the situation is improving, the GGF expects the Government to ease the restrictions gradually over the coming weeks and months. In the meantime, the GGF has urged companies who can continue to operate, to do so responsibly and within the spirit of the guidance. John Agnew summarised, “The published GGF and Government Safe Guidance has not changed, all companies who can continue to operate should ensure they follow the safe guidance to safeguard their employees and customers, and to protect the NHS and save lives.” The GGF constantly updates its news page on https://www.ggf.org.uk/news/

As part of a commitment to measure business levels, opinions, and prospects from the front line, FENSA has completed a survey amongst more than 6200 Approved Installers, located throughout England and Wales. Carried out in November and December 2020, the exercise sought to take a snapshot of the market from the installers’ perspective following the end of the first lockdown in May, and to compare the results against anecdotal information carried in the press and online. Supporting the view that business has been very good in that period, 74.6% of companies responding said that work levels have been good or very good since returning to work. This rose to 81.7% when companies were questioned about demand from homeowners throughout the second half of the year. And whilst a significant number appear to have not enjoyed the increase in business, the number of FENSA installations registered for the last 6 months of the year clearly supports the positive response reported by the majority.

The strong market performance was however mitigated by severe issues with the supply chain, with 94.4% of installers saying that they had experienced problems and delays with supplies. Despite this, 66.7% of respondents were optimistic that demand would continue for the foreseeable future. “The industry is incredibly busy and FENSA Approved Installers are winning a huge amount of work,” said Chris Beedel, FENSA Director of Membership, concluding that “seeing workloads higher than the same period for 2019 and with the majority of companies expecting current work levels to continue in 2021, is very encouraging for the industry. Although this information is very encouraging and we remain cautiously optimistic, there are a number of factors outside of our control at the moment but FENSA is here to support our Approved Installers” Managing Director, GGF Commercial Group, Anda Gregory, believes that installers have shown remarkable resilience throughout the pandemic: “Installers have been severely tested. From having their businesses closed almost overnight, followed by welcome but unexpected strong demand, they have risen to the occasion,” she commented. “Lead levels being generated through the FENSA website remain strong and this, coupled with Approved Installers’ performance throughout last year, suggest that the buoyant market conditions will continue, despite the difficulties imposed by the pandemic.” For more information on FENSA, including details of how to join, please visit: www.fensa.org.uk.

BUILDING OUR SKILLS APPOINTED AS GREEN HOMES GRANT TRAINING PROVIDER Following a rigorous vetting process, Building Our Skills has been appointed as a specialist fenestration training provider as part of the Green Homes Grant scheme. The offer of fully funded training for the fenestration industry is a part of the initiative devised by BEIS and the Midlands Energy Hub to help train the next generation of tradespeople to deliver home improvement measures through the Green Homes voucher scheme in England. John Ogilvie, Director of Building Our Skills is now calling on fenestration industry employers to make the most of the timelimited, fully funded practical training that Building Our Skills can offer under the scheme. "We are delighted to have been appointed to be a part of this project. Like all the industry we would of course all prefer that in

the fullness of time Fenestration becomes a primary measure on these kinds of schemes, designed to update and upgrade the thermal properties of older buildings, but for Building Our Skills to be appointed by BEIS as a specialist training provider is recognition even now that our industry has a significant role to play.

The training scheme officially launched on the 4th January and we have 100% fully funded

practical training courses available to the industry until the end of May. If I were an employer in the industry that has been appointed as a part of the delivery of the voucher scheme, I’d certainly be very keen to make the most of the opportunity the scheme is providing. The fact that our practical training courses are formally accredited by the fenestration industry’s leading awarding body GQA Qualifications, not only contributed to our winning a place on this training framework but gives learners something tangible to take away from their training. It is a further endorsement of the importance of setting a standard for training that learners can aspire to and take pride in their achievement. It is also a great confidence boost for them, their employers and the people in whose homes they will be working in. Attendees to the training programme at our academy building in Sheffield will undergo three days of training, at the end of which they will have the knowledge and skills to be able fit windows and doors, glaze and reglaze existing windows and doors, and have a full understanding of the site requirements and building regulations that impact the trade. On successful completion of the

74

training and on achieving a set standard they will be formally accredited and receive a skills card containing their achievements. The 100% funded course is available for employees of any industry company who is a part of the delivery programme for the Green Homes voucher scheme, or for anyone they may wish to employ as newcomers to the industry who will then be involved in the delivery programme. The Green Homes Grant scheme funds up to two-thirds of the cost of green home improvements, up to £5,000 or 100% of the cost for homeowners on low incomes, up to a maximum of £10,000. The Green Homes Grant skills training scheme is designed to help deliver the Green Homes Grant Voucher Scheme. AWARDS

LINIAR BRINGS HOME A DOUBLE AT THE NFAS! This year's annual National Fenestration Awards announcement brought a smile to the team at Liniar this past November, as they discovered they'd won two of the coveted awards. With everyone keeping a keen eye on their Twitter feeds, the Liniar team was delighted to see Alumina and Liniar pop up as winners in two categories of awards: Aluminium System of the Year and more meaningfully, the COVID Heroes Award. The latter was shared with industry Morley Glass and Masterframe, both of whom also invested in helping others throughout the pandemic. Liniar's Group Sales Director Nigel Bishop comments on what these awards mean to the Liniar team: "We're always delighted to win awards, and good news helps to inject positivity into our teams – which, this year, has been more important than ever.

ever since. The flexible bead means no wedge gaskets and an extremely fast fitting time, and the feedback we get from installers has now been translated into the NFA win, which is extremely gratifying. There are some more exciting Alumina developments coming in 2021, so watch this space! "While both awards mean a lot to us, the one that really got the team cheering was the new COVID Heroes awards. We've always been active members in our local community, but the ongoing pandemic has helped to highlight the vital role that both Liniar and our sister company Avantek Machinery play in supporting the families, charities and businesses around us.

"It's humbling to be recognised for the work we put into the PPE project we've been running since April to manufacture protective visors. When the project began, everyone throughout the business wanted to be a part of making a difference in the lives of healthcare and frontline workers and their families, by providing critical PPE items when they needed them most. "We’d like to thank everyone that voted for us in this year's National Fenestration Awards and offer congratulations to the rest of the winners!" concludes Nigel. Discover Alumina at www.alumina.liniar.co.uk and read about Liniar's PPE project by visiting www.liniar.co.uk/ppe.

Managing Director Martin Nettleton has challenged Euroglaze’s bankers Barclays to a virtual 1000km bike ride, with Barclays matching the sponsorship money raised. Having completed 5000 virtual miles during 2020 on his turbo trainer at home, Martin is confident that he can set an impressive pace for his friendly bank manager Daniel Firth to match.

It is all part of Euroglaze’s 40th anniversary charity campaign supporting Retina UK, which helps to fund research for all eye diseases like the one that caused both Martin and his brother Simon to gradually lose their sight.

THERMOSEAL GROUP WINS SPACER BAR MANUFACTURER OF THE YEAR 2020

The National Fenestration Awards are the industry’s fastest growing independent awards which are run and decided completely by the participation of the industry. At the start of each year, there is a nominations phase where anyone can put forward the names of people and companies in over two dozen categories who they believe deserve to be recognised. The industry then votes on a shortlist in each category based on the nominations submitted.

Lockdown may have put the brakes on Euroglaze’s fundraising campaign for Retina UK initially, but the team at the Barnsley based Rehau fabricator are now on a roll once again.

This virtual challenge replaces the Prudential Ride100 which Martin and his tandem ride partner Andrew Oates were scheduled to take part in during August, following much of the 2012 Olympic road race course.

“The Alumina door was launched in 2017 as the first aluminium bifold to be foiled or powder coated, and we’ve continued to develop it

Thermoseal Group, the UK’s leading manufacturer of warm edge spacer systems and distributor of over 2,500 insulated glass (IG) components, has been named ‘Spacer Bar Manufacturer of the Year’ in the National Fenestration Awards for the second time.

judges to state why we should win the awards. Whilst these methods have led to prestigious awards such as The Queen’s Award for Excellence: International Trade and Amazon’s Growing Business Award: Export Champion of the Year, we are also extremely proud and honoured to win an award which is voted for by those directly related to Thermoseal Group’s business – our customers, suppliers and industry contacts. It is a true reflection that the products and service we strive to provide are meeting the expectations of those we are doing our best impress. “Thermoseal Group won the award with the highest percentage of the open-platform votes and we were announced winners at the

beginning of the Winners’ Week 7th – 11th December 2020. “A big thank you to Jason and Lee for running the awards, which are now in their 8th year of operation. I’d also like to thank all of those people who took the time to vote for Thermoseal Group. We will continue to strive to offer the best UK-manufactured products whilst aiming to always achieve excellence in the service we provide. In the face of the Covid-19 pandemic and the issues caused by BREXIT, I’m sure you’ll agree that right now this is difficult a job for us all.”

With a mix of raffles, fun days, cake sales and even a virtual John O’Groats to Land’s End challenge, the Euroglaze team had already raised more than £6000 when the first lockdown hit, but now they are more focused than ever on trying to reach their original £10,000 target. Martin Nettleton explained: “These lockdowns have hit all charities hard, but particularly the smaller, lesser known ones like Retina UK, which rely so much on fundraising from cancelled events like bike rides and marathons. Obviously, Retina UK is close to my heart, but there’s an extra urgency around their work at the moment because a brand-new gene therapy has just been approved for use on the NHS which finally offers hope to patients with one particular kind of Retinitis pigmentosa which causes inherited sight loss. “In terms of treatment, this is the most significant breakthrough that has taken place in my lifetime and Retina UK is hopeful that it will lead to further pioneering therapies being discovered which will also benefit people like me. I’m doing my bit to help and am incredibly grateful to everyone – and especially our bank manager Daniel who is supporting these fundraising efforts.” To sponsor Martin and maximise the amount Barclays has to pay out in matched funding, go to: https://www.justgiving.com/fundraising/daniel-firth4 More details at: www.euroglaze.co.uk.

Head of Marketing and Communications, Samantha Hill, tells us: “We have won a number of awards in recent years to which we have had to meet a wide range of strict criteria to even submit our entry. In many cases, we have then had to follow this up with face-toface pitches in front of panels of

CHARITY NEWS

The UK’s Leading Glass & Glazing Newspaper

UAP MD BECOMES INTERNATIONAL CHARITY VICE PRESIDENT David Jennings, managing director of door and window security and fire safety specialist, UAP Limited, has been appointed as Vice President of the Encephalitis Society*; an international charity that aims to provide support and information for patients and families affected by this often devastating neurological condition. It is a cause very close to David’s heart, following the loss of his brother, Phillip, to encephalitis aged just 17. After contracting measles, Phillip developed encephalitis because the virus infected his brain. The loss of his brother has made David passionate about ensuring others understand the risk factors of encephalitis and learn more about the condition, so he has become an active supporter of the charity and its efforts to provide support and hope for patients as well as work on a global scale raising awareness and supporting research endeavours. David explains: “When we lost Phillip in 1975, there was very little information about encephalitis and limited support or resources. The condition is complex and has a variety of causes, affecting people of all ages and demographics, with around 6,000 cases in the UK alone every year. “I have worked with a number of charities over the years and UAP has supported many charity projects, but I only came across

the Encephalitis Society a couple of years ago. I am delighted to work with the team at the charity to help further its goals of awareness, support and research and very honoured to be appointed Vice President.” David’s role as Vice President and involvement with the Encephalitis Society builds on UAP’s long history of support for charities. The company has funded construction of five village schools in remote regions of Nepal during its 25-year history and helped to raise the funds needed to build a community hospital in the Himalayas. The company has also enabled 50,000 trees to be planted in Thailand and has been involved in providing meals for homeless people in its local community. David adds: “As a successful business, we have always believed that we have an obligation to ‘give something back’ and enable others to benefit from our success. It’s a philosophy that’s embedded in our DNA as a business; from the charities we’ve supported through to the decision to become a co-operative to enable every employee to benefit from working towards our continuing success. “My new role as Vice President of the Encephalitis Society is an opportunity for me to make a tangible difference for a cause that is very personal and important to me and I am proud to take on the role while continuing to lead the UAP business.” Dr Ava Easton, Chief Executive at the Encephalitis Society adds: “We are a charity with ambitious goals for what we want to achieve over the next few years and David’s passion, drive and creativity will have an important part to play in achieving those objectives in his new role as Vice President. We’re delighted to welcome him to the post and are certain his fund raising experience and his commercial background will be extremely valuable.” UAP will be supporting World Encephalitis Day on 22nd February, as global landmarks and iconic buildings around the world, such as Niagara Falls, light up red to mark the day. Look out of #Red4WED and #WorldEncephalitisDay posts on the company’s social media channels. *Encephalitis is an inflammation of the brain caused by an infection or through the immune system attacking the brain in error (https://www.encephalitis.info/).

EDGETECH CONTINUES TO SUPPORT WORTHY CAUSES DESPITE THE CHALLENGES OF 2020 Coronavirus has affected every part of society in one way or another – but the charity sector has been especially hard hit. With charity shops around the country ordered to close, and hundreds of critical fundraising events forced to cancel, groups offering vital support to millions of vulnerable people are struggling to survive. But one of the most heartening things to come out of the long and difficult pandemic is the spirit of generosity that’s seen thousands of businesses and members of the public step up and help charities in need. At warm-edge experts Edgetech, and parent company Quanex, this is seen as so important that they’ve identified the community as one of four key stakeholders they place special emphasis on caring for, along with their customers, employees and shareholders. Mindful of this, during this difficult period the employees of the Coventry-based firm have donated hundreds of urgently needed food and cleaning products to their local foodbank, whose services have been more in demand than ever in recent months. Quanex matched the physical donation with an £800 financial contribution.

“With staff members giving up alcohol, losing weight, or in the case of Head of Technical Development Gary Shoesmith, walking the equivalent of the distance from his house to the Coventry office, the company managed to raise £410 for Macmillan during the month.”

Edgetech have also raised money for Myton Hospice, a local charity supporting people with terminal illnesses. Among other fundraising activities, staff took part in a ‘Wear it festive’ day, dressing up in garish Christmas clothing in return for donations. Some of the company’s usual charitable activities were disrupted by the pandemic, but they found other ways of continuing to support the same important causes. Edgetech would normally support the coffee morning held by Macmillan Cancer Research each year, but in order to encourage social distancing the company encouraged individuals to take on sponsored challenges during the month instead. With staff members giving up alcohol, losing weight, or in the case of Head of Technical Development Gary Shoesmith, walking the equivalent of the distance from his house to the Coventry office, the company managed to raise £410 for Macmillan during the month. In previous years, Edgetech has also purchased holiday cards from respected glazing sector charity GM Fundraising. This year, since so many people are working from home, the company opted to send digital messages instead – but made a financial donation and purchased a special rainbow print to make sure GM, and Hope House Children’s Hospice, didn’t lose out on their usual support. “At Edgetech, we’re all very aware that we’re in a relatively fortunate position,” comments Managing Director Chris Alderson. “Many sectors of the economy have been devastated by the pandemic, with thousands of businesses in leisure, travel, tourism, hospitality and retail forced to close entirely. “That meant that this year, we felt it was more important than ever to support the vital causes and organisations who do so much to help millions of vulnerable people throughout the UK. “We want to thank all the local charities who’ve continued to do fantastic work in extremely difficult circumstances this year, and we look forward to continuing to support them in 2021”.
