Please let our sponsors know you are a member of the Arizona Porsche club and that you appreciate their support. 2023 CALENDAR
What a first month!
In January, our Webmaster Marla McDermott informed us that she wanted to step away from managing the website. Cynthia Haag also resigned as Social Chair. We still need to fill the position of Flight #45 Chair/Coordinator. The good news is that we have two gentlemen with great backgrounds in tech and Web Design step up to serve as Webmaster and Assistant Webmaster. Thank you, Chuck Carpenter and Rob Moser.
I have been retired for many years. I started the month being a little down because I was thinking about all the work to be done. Then I reminded myself of my mantra in business: “Focus on Results not the work!”
I want to thank Mark Baker for helping me with the transition duties, especially the technology areas.
There are a couple of Chair positions that are time consuming and time sensitive. The Webmaster and GP Editor are just two. As I’m typing this Angela is working with Gregg and Ali Bull preparing them to step in as publishers of February’s Going Places newsletter. Thank you, Gregg, and Ali. AZPCA continues to grow in members. Every week we receive 4 to 6 new members transferring in to our region.
It is great we have dedicated people to step up and volunteer to fill open positions:
• Marty Ercoline volunteered to assume the Treasures role.
• Rook is Region Driving Tour and now National Driving Tour Chair.
• Kim Kemper temporarily volunteered to fill in for registrar duties while also serving as AX Chair.
• Gregg Bull serves as the club’s Secretary and GP Editor
• Dan Bouet is VP and DE chair.
• Jim Bultema plans our monthly meetings and served as a Director last year.
I am sure I’m forgetting some people. There are those volunteers that support AX, and DE, Andy Jorgensen with sponsors, Moe sending emails to welcome new members, Betsy with the Goodie store. Many are working full time jobs plus doing double duty with the club.
The more people we have, the more activities and the more volunteers the club needs! So if you have the time, and an inclination to help with driving tours, social scheduling/activities, and Flight Coordinator please contact me at: president@az.pca.org
I look forward to hearing from you and seeing you at one of our upcoming events.
In Memoriam
Robert Francis Blake, age 82, of Mesa, Arizona passed away on Wednesday, December 7, 2022. Dear Ginger, our membership is sending love, thoughts, and prayers to you and your family during this tough time. AZPCA member, Rook Younger, “Bob was a really great guy who didn’t let his medical issues affect his enthusiasm and friendly demeanor at club events”.
| 6 | PRESIDENT’S NOTE Mark Manente
From the EDITOR’s Gregg & Ali Bull
Sowhere do we start? The logical starting point would be to give our very big thanks to the person who made this newsletter so popular and so well received, Angela Manente. Angela has been the Editor for over 6 years and we can confidently say we have some very big boots to fill! Angela will continue to support us over the coming months to ensure a smooth transition and that we are set up for success!
In this issue, we have our new President, Mark Manente’s first club message that encourages our membership to engage and assist with various elements of the club. With expanded engagement we will achieve more variety and increase our appeal across our membership.
AZPCA continues to bring a wide variety of options to its members and February doesn’t disappoint.
We have a Porsche & Pancakes visit to an Arizona landmark, the Rock Springs Cafe, on Feb.18th and a visit to a wonderful private car collection the following day on Feb.19th at a ‘top secret’ location. Rook Younger, our driving tour organizer has a brilliant mid-week tour organized on February 22nd, where attendees will take in local lakes and geography - and may have to double check how many lakes they actually visit!
If you are a new member, or just new to participating in our club activities, there are many opportunities for you to meet new people and learn something new about our great state of Arizona! Please remember to sign up early when you see these fantastic opportunities as many of them sell out quickly.
If you like cars, culture and camaraderie then AZPCA is THE place to be!

Meet this month’s featured member, Steve Tate.
1. When did you join PCA?
I joined PCA in November 2022.
2. What Porsche(s) do you have?
I have a 2017 911 Carrera PDK, Graphite Blue Metallic.
3. Where are you from?
Doris is from Bisbee Arizona, and I am from Columbia, Missouri (right in the middle of the state). I moved to Arizona in 1996 to Tucson and then to Phoenix in 1998 and met Doris at the job in 1999 and we’ve been together ever since, getting married in 2006.
4. Family?
We do not have any children.
5. Work background or trade?
I’m an IT Director for Pioneer Title Agency. I’ve been here for 12 year snow and worked in IT for over 25 years.
6. What makes your car special?
The 911 is special because of the color and the APR Stage 3 GTS Turbo upgrade/tune, upgraded intercoolers and the APR PDK tune.
7. Next upgrade?
IPD plenum, High flow Cats and new diverter valves.
8. Have you personalized your car?
Yes, I vinyl wrapped the roof and mirrors and powder coated the wheels and brake calipers.
MEET A MEMBER
9. Favorite memory with a car?
Favorite memory right now is that 1 day after I got it, we went on a drive with a local Audi club with a friend of mine. The drive was Phoenix to Cottonwood by way of Wickenburg/Yarnell Hill. We got separated from our group on the other side of Cottonwood and in trying to catch up, we both got pulled over for speeding. I think we were both doing more than 80 mph. During my explanation to the officer we were just trying to catch our group of cars, the car club passed us sitting on the side of the road. They were all honking and waving at us as they drove by. Evidently, they had all pulled over and we missed them and drove past them. The officer let us go with warnings and at the next stop, we were the talk of the group.
10. Why did you buy your Porsche?
I bought my 911 because I worked hard and earned it. It’s been a childhood dream to own one. I had posters on my walls when I was a kid and never thought I’d be able to own one. Now I’m grown up and life just positioned itself at the right time and the opportunity came up, so I jumped on it. I have owned A LOT of other cars in my lifetime and some I regret letting go, but this 911 will be with me for a very long time.
11. High school nickname?
None given
12. Top 3 cars you would own?
Porsche 911 Turbo S, Lambo and a Ferrari

Don Murray has extended a gracious invitation to host AZPCA members for a private viewing of his remarkable collection.
The collection includes several extremely rare and historic Porsches.
We will view Don's collection of Ferraris, including a 1950 166 that was the 22nd road Ferrari ever built. Also Don's first Ferrari, the 400 Superamerica, which was on display at the Peterson museum twice. Don’s collection showcases a 1955 RS Spyder that won a Formula 2 race and his 1970 911 is in practically new condition with only 700 original miles. Some notable race cars in the collection are the Sebring Sprint that was raced by legendary driver Bruce McLaren.
This is a unique opportunity don't miss it.

3 Lakes Driving Tour
Wednesday, February 22, 2023
8:00 am – 3:00 pm
This mid-week drive will commence in Chandler and will run through East Mesa and Apache Junction toward Canyon Lake. After a brief stop at Tortilla Flat we will re-trace the route along the lake back to Mesa then on to the scenic and winding route following Usery Pass and Bush Highway to Saguaro Lake. After a stop at lake #2 we will make our way onto the Beeline Highway toward Fountains Hills. From Fountain Lake, home of the famous fountain, we’ll continue on to Rio Verde and North Scottsdale to our final destination, Bartlett Lake, where a great Italian buffet lunch awaits us at The Cove restaurant.
So if you’re keeping track, yeah, that’s four lakes. But there are lakes, then there are lakes! The big ones are formed by dams erected on the Salt and Verde Rivers in the ’20s and ’30s, for water storage and hydroelectric power production. Fountain Lake is an “attraction” that surrounds the iconic fountain from which the Fountain HIlls community got its name when development began in the early ’70s.
The cost for the lunch buffet is $32 per person. Those who were on the drive last time we went to The Cove will tell you it was delicious!

Come out with your friends and enjoy a day of displaying your Porsche, seeing other great Porsches, and visiting with friends. VOLUNTEER'S NEEDED TO ORGANIZE SOCIAL EVENTS FOR AZPCA MEMBERS
Your club is seeking a person or persons to function as our AZPCA Social Committee Chair and co-chairs for major events and create new events. Please give it some thought. It’s a great way to participate in the region and get to know about our members.
We are looking for a few people to share the responsibilities organized under the Social Chair role. FYI - If you are considering applying for or have someone to suggest, drop me a note at president@az.pca.org alternatively you can also reach out to any of the Board of Directors.
Social Chair responsibilities associated with this position:
•Coordinating and hosting all of the social events of the Region, excluding recurring membership meetings which are the responsibility of the Monthly Meeting Coordinator.
• Work with Region officers and the Board of Directors to host New Member Social, Concours Reception, Concours Award Luncheon, Holiday Party, and ad-hoc social events such as Region anniversary parties.
•For social events which may require an overnight stay such as Concours, work with an onsite or nearby hotel to reserve discounted room blocks for members.
•Ensure all social events are conducted in accordance with the General Event Guidelines set by PCA National.
• Select a mix of social events that are responsive to the needs and interests of the Region’s membership.
• Be available to the general Region membership to answer questions and provide information regarding social events, such as cost, location, registration, and annual events.

• Provide the Region Newsletter Editor and Webmaster with a description of the event including dates, times, location, and cost per attendee for publication in Going Places and posted on our website.
General event guidelines:
Social events should be scheduled as far in advance as possible, generally 4 months or greater.
•The Social Chair should use their best judgement to estimate the number of attendees by using attendance numbers from past events of a similar nature and guidance from the Board of Directors.
•Event venues should be selected based on food and beverage minimum cost, ease of access to the location for the majority of the membership, ample parking, and event flexibility with venue management (e.g. flexible cancellation policy, ability to accommodate special dietary needs of members, ability to move outdoor events indoors in case of inclement weather).
• Ensure that Audio/Visual equipment is available if a presentation is planned.
• Alcoholic beverages, if provided, will be on a “cash bar” basis and not hosted by the Club.

SHELBY AMERICAN 60 YEARS OF HIGH PERFORMANCE, by Colin Comer with Rick Kopec, published January 3, 2023 by Motorbooks, Beverly MA.
TheForeword of this book indicates that a young James D. Farley Jr., once used ‘pull’ to land a job as a janitor at Phil Hill’s restoration shop. Now he is CEO of Ford Motor Company. Interesting !
There are eight chapters covering the Shelby’s evolution from an experimental hot rod race car to an automotive empire. Chapter one summarizes the history, mostly focusing on the early years and how Shelby exploded from a single prototype/ demonstrator to a manufacturer of thousands of vehicles in a multitude of models, and almost incidentally also a race team capable of a onetwo-three at Le Mans. This book provides a very comprehensive treatment of all manner of ‘Shelbys’, past, present, and possibly future.
Chapter four may be the meat of the book for many readers It gives brief biographies with pictures of the many assorted drivers and mechanics, well known and unknown, and the cars that contributed to the Shelby legend. It puts faces and stories to many names that were continually poping up in the motoring press during the ‘s60s through ‘80s, The many references to Shelby Cobras, Shelby Mustangs, etc. are based on the corporate name, not personal involvement by Carrol Shelby himself. This chapter highlights what is implicit in other chapters – a great number of different people played key roles in the success of the Shelby vehicles.
SHELBY AMERICAN is very well illustrated with comprehensive captions for each picture. Indeed, there may be more words in picture captions than in all the text blocks. The casual observer who picks this up off a coffee table must be excused if they
consider it a picture book, not a book telling a story. The snap-shot nature of these pictures collected from multiple sources, can give the viewer a palpable, you-are-there, in the scene of the action, feeling. The cover of the book proper, not the stylistic dust jacket, gives one the feeling they can almost reach out and touch Shelby, Bob Holbert and Ken Miles, arguably the hottest sports-car racers in the ‘60s. The back cover photo puts you in the action for an Elkart Lake pitstop. There is no Porsche content, but the index does list six entries for Bob Holbert and one for Roger Penske, the premier Porsche racers of the ‘60s and ‘70s..
Hardcover, with 224 9-1/2 x 12 inch pages, with 250 color photos and innumerable B&Ws from the early years. There is a four page index mostly of people’s names and Shelby model numbers. This reviewer’s per-production copy has some unfortunate publishing lapses of the wrong selection in spellcheck variety, and misplaced caption blocks. Hopefully these will be fixed by the time you buy a copy. With or without these glitches, any enthusiast of old time, ‘grass roots’ sportscar racing will love this book, even if they don’t have there own memories of that era. SHELBY AMERICAN is a fascinating story well told in a fast paced narrative appropriate to the frenetic nature of Shelby operations over the years. By the time you read this it should be available for $60.00 from your favorite bookseller (ask for it), or from Quartoknows.com

All The Best
STORY BY DANIELLE BADLER
Allthe best. We use the expression all the time, don’t we. It’s especially handy as a sign-off in correspondence. Where we sometimes condense it into simply “Best.” Which is nice and neat. But it begs a simple question. What do we mean? Have the best day ever? Be the best that we can be? Just what are we doing?
I started to think about this while procrastinating on-line, which is a favorite time-killer of mine. I was skimming YouTube videos and ran into a clip of Secretariat winning the Belmont Stakes in 1973, to win the Triple Crown by obliterating the field.
The call by Chick Anderson is worth the time, in and of itself. “Secretariat is widening now. He’s moving like a tremendous machine!” The horse goes on to win by 31 lengths … 31 lengths! At the finish, the second-place horse is hardly in the frame of the camera. “Secretariat is all alone!” This is widely considered the greatest race of all time. And Big Red is generally acknowledged as the greatest horse of all time.
Watch the Belmont video. It’s spine-tingling. Like Tiger Woods’ putt at The Masters. The one that went curling up, almost perfectly diagonal to the cup, and then began turning, slowly, toward the hole. It went rolling, rolling, rolling, until … it … went … in. And the call, remember? “Better than most, better than most, better than most….”
In my denial of work to do, I ran across another YouTube video. A speech by a retired SR-71 Blackbird pilot. “Know what kind of radar we had? We didn’t have any radar. Know what kind of computers we had? We didn’t have computers. Know what kind of flaps, spoilers, speed brakes? We didn’t have flaps, spoilers, speed brakes. The airplane was your basic ‘60s street rod, go fast, burn gas airplane, and I loved it,” says Air Force Major (ret) Brian Shul.
He goes on, “Only 93 men in history flew this jet … we’re doing a mile every two seconds … over 4,500 missiles were fired at this jet in 25 years. Not one was ever hit.”
Then you have the stories about Stirling Moss and Denis Jenkinson in the 300 SLR, Number 722, winner of the 1955 Mille Miglia. This was before intercoms, remember, and the SLR was a roadster. So conversation was impossible. Jenkinson mapped the entire route, 1,000 miles, on a paper roller. He’d scroll forward as they progressed, and give Moss hand-signals for what was ahead.
The quote I like most from Moss, and I’m paraphrasing, is that the straights are the boring parts between the corners.
My Formula 1 idol, growing up, was Jim Clark. Jackie Stewart was quoted as saying, and again I’m paraphrasing, that a group of drivers in that era were fast. But they all knew that Clark was the fastest.
Clark was asked how he does it, and he shrugged and said he just brakes a little later.
When it comes to Porsches, my favorite stories revolve around the 917/30. The Sunoco 917, run by Penske and driven by Mark Donohue, which so overwhelmed the competition that it killed the Can Am series as it had been. And was the death knell for “run what you brung,” never to be seen again, at least in highlevel motor sports.
“You can never have too much horsepower,” Donohue said about the car. And, with upwards of 1,500 hp in qualifying trim, he wasn’t kidding. To prove it, he’d leave the pits with a few quick twitches of the wheel, sending the car into a controlled left, right, left, right slide. Just because.
The stories go on and on. Ruth, Aaron, Jordan, Pele, Messi, Brady, Orr, Gretzky, Woods, Nicklaus, Hogan, Fangio, Schumacher, Rossi. Williams, King, Vonn, Schifrin. No, this is not an all-inclusive list. But it is a list of some of the most extraordinary. The very best that ever lived. As chronicled by their achievements.
Achievements we idolize. The best. Do we really believe that, by wishing the best for someone, that the gesture will actually enable them to become the best at whatever they want to be the best at? Hardly. But it’s the thought, the encouragement, that counts. Because, otherwise, it will never happen. Otherwise, they may never even take that first step. There’s a Yiddish word for a person who makes this gesture. It’s “mensch.” Which loosely translates to a good person, and it’s about as fine a compliment as one can bestow on someone.
Yes, that’s what “all the best” should mean. And, in that spirit, we should all keep using it.

AZPCA AUTOCROSS
Season EVENT #4
February is the month of LOVE
February is the month of LOVE and being sweet to the person you love the most has been an American past-time tradition. The German valentine traditions are essentially the same as in the AZPCA Regionland. The Germans provide red roses to the women they love along with the cards and the sweet treats, just as the AZPCA Regionlanders do.
However, the big difference between the Germans and the AZPCA Regionlanders is the German men give their women “BIG” ginger cookies made in a shape of a heart decorated with a frosting, and usually with words expressing the feelings of their heart, that is very sweet (no pun intended).
The AZPCA Region autocross men have very little time from now to get their significant others the “BIG” gingerbread cookie, the sweet treats, and the roses so they can get a free pass to attend the upcoming Saturday, February 4, 2023, autocross event at the Arizona Motorsports Park (AMP) in Litchfield Park. This could be a double jeopardy situation for the autocross men because there are two events this month (February).
The second event is scheduled for Saturday the 25th. Maybe this would be a great time to invite your soulmate to come along to participate (watch or co-drive your Porsche or drive their own Porsche) and have just as much fun anyone could have at an AZPCA Region event.
As of this writing there are several grid positions left to fill up but, I would not procrastinate and wait until the last minute. It appears that all the AZPCA Region events, not just the autocross events, have been very popular and fill up fast. All you need to do is peek at the various AZPCA Region events listed on Motorsportreg.com (MSR) and see all the “yellow” waitlist flags next to the numerous names of the members waiting for cancellations to happen so they can join in on all the fun. Don’t be one of those members with a “yellow” waitlist flag next to your name.
Event #4 was held on January 14, 2023, at AMP in Litchfield Park. The weather for the past event was a bit chilly all day with rain in the forecast for later in the day. The days are getting longer thus the warmer temperatures are just a few weeks away. Although, it is still a tad early to unpack your complimentary AZPCA Region Cooling Towel.
Forty-five drivers took to the course, that was designed by the AZPCA Renown Course Design Team, in a counter-clockwise direction with a loop. After traversing through a three-cone gate and two-cone slalom elements, you enter a right-hand loop, and continue across the course to a couple of sweepers.
STORY BY Kenneth Mitchell PHOTOS BY Jennifer Reinhardt
The first sweeper was a left-hand sweeper then you enter a right-hand sweeper and a couple left-hand turns, and you cross the start/finish. The drivers drove three timed laps each in the morning and afternoon sessions.
The Porsche contingent consisted of twenty Porsches, elevenCaymans (with the usual variants), one-GT4, three-Carreras, one-968, one-Boxster, and three-GT3 RS’s. One of the GT3 RS’s is a newly acquired 2016 GT3 RS by Brian M., who formally competed in a Cayman S.
There were four AZPCA Region members attending their first autocross event. Rita P. brought out her 2019 Porsche GT3 RS to carve some corners at her first autocross event. Rita was also showing her mother, Ginger W., how much fun could be had at an autocross event with a Porsche car. Rita’s best lap time was 55.317 seconds from her second afternoon lap run.
Ginger wasn’t just standing around watching her daughter negotiate the autocross course. Ginger was patiently waiting with her helmet in hand for her turn to take the course in her 2016 Cayman. Ginger had a ton of fun and was a quick study. Her best lap time was 84.142 seconds on her last lap run in the afternoon session.
Ginger has been attending several AZPCA Region activities. In her member profile, she stated that “she is 74 and having fun with her Porsche car”. Ginger was true to her word and in addition to the fun had the greatest improvement during the day with almost a 30 % reduction (34 Seconds) in her times between the morning and afternoon sessions.
Rita and Ginger are another multi-generation AZPCA Region family partaking in family fun-packed AZPCA Region activities. The autocross event is one of many AZPCA Region events for a family to have fun with their Porsche cars and the Rook Y’s. Driving Tours, and Dan B’s Driving Events (DEs), are the other AZPCA Region activities to have fun with your Porsche cars.
Jonathan B., the new member Jonathan, not the Jonathan B., that has been an AZPCA Region member for several years, a.k.a. “Riky Bobby”, drove a 2022 Porsche Cayman 718 GTS and his best lap time was 61.172 seconds which he accomplished in his last lap run in the afternoon session.
David S., is also a PCA member and he joins us autocrossing for the first time driving his 2020 Porsche 718 Cayman and his best time was 62.632 seconds that he obtained from his first lap run in the afternoon session. His last lap run was in the afternoon session was only two-thousandths of a second slower than his first afternoon lap run.
| 38 |
John D., aka the AZPCA Region Driving Instructor for the Region’s D.E. program decided to come out and join in the fun of autocrossing. John has been involved with both the DE and Autocross programs for many years. John drove his 2012 Porsche Carrera “S” and his best lap time was 60.592 seconds which he drove on his last lap run in the morning session. John was not used to seeing a sea of cones in from of him on a track/ course, but he did manage not to run over them.
Rick A, Autocross Co-Chair, kept very busy at this event providing valuable driving instruction to the four first-time autocrossers in addition to managing the event operations. Rick was hopping in and out of four cars all day long and he definitely deserved a rest because he was plumb-tuckered-tired.
In Group “P” the 991/997 contenders were Kim K. in his 2016 Porsche GT3 RS with the best Group “P” time of day of 50.131 seconds that he drove on his third lap run in the morning session. Kim did not take any afternoon session runs. Eric S., in his 997 Outlaw, best lap run was 50.889 seconds that he achieved from his second lap run in the afternoon session. Don’t forget to view Eric’s video he posted on the Region’s Facebook page.
The Cayman contingent consisted of Martin and his wife Jennifer R., in the family 2007 Cayman “S”, Kenny M, in his 2015 Cayman GTS, and Kathi V., in her 2021 Porsche GT4, all vying for being the top Cayman driver in Group “P”. Martin led the way all day long with his best lap time of 50.973 seconds. Kenny M’s best lap time was 51.735 seconds with Jennifer just behind Kenny with her best lap time of 52.086 seconds. Kathi V. was wheeling her GT4 with a couple of competitive times and her best was 52.414 seconds.
Kathi actually had a better lap time run but unfortunately, she snagged three cones along the way on just one run. She also had a cone on another run and she laid claim to the title of being the top “Lady Cone Killer” for this event.
The Group “X” drivers were among the fastest drivers for this event. AZPCA Region member Jonathan B (Riky Bobby) laid down two killer runs (50.037 and 50.199 seconds) in the afternoon session that put the icing on the cake, so-to-speak but, those two killer runs were not clean, they were dirty with one cone on each run. Johnathan’s best clean lap time was 50.582 seconds which he drove on his last lap run from the morning session, however, he still earns the honors of being the fastest Group “X” driver for the event.
Ealing J. was second with his best lap run of 51.084 seconds from his last lap run from the morning session. Ealing was actually forty-four thousandths of a second quicker on one lap from the afternoon session unfortunately, he was dirty with one cone. Mathias A. was flying and trying to keep up in his non-Porsche Grocery Getter and his best lap time was 52.196 seconds from his second lap run in the afternoon session.
Scott K. is a high school student and he was sharing the driving with his dad in his dad’s, 2009 Cayman “S”, and he was on a mission to beat his dad, Eric K. At the end of the morning
session, Scott was a half second ahead of his dad. Eric was the first driver to go out in the afternoon session and his best lap time was 54.410 seconds from his first lap run which places him fourteen-thousandths of a second behind his son. Scott finally achieves his goal in besting his dad’s time for the first time.
When Scott took to the course in the afternoon session it was already a done deal and he drove the course like he stole the car or he was driving his dad’s car for the first time after he got his driver’s license, wait, he was driving his dad’s car and he was doing like every kid does when they drive their dad’s car. Scott shaved off some more time with a best lap run of 54.093 seconds. Scott’s wild run also collected a couple cones along the way that added to his overall cone kill of six for the day which he earns the title of being the top “Cone Killer” for the event along with the “Lady Cone Killer” (Kathi V.) right behind him with four kills.
This event was murderous on the little plastic cylindrical objects for this event. This event had a total of twenty-nine cone kills. That is seven more cone kills than any other event since records have been kept going way back to year 2021.
This event also had another wayward driving Porsche driver candidate that was added to the count of wayward driving drivers. That brings a total of three wayward driving Porsche drivers vying for that distinguished “Wayward Porsche Driving” title of the year.
There are only two events left after this month, March 18, 2023, and April 8, 2023, remaining for the 2022-2023 AZPCA Region Autocross Season. The autocross program will be on hiatus from May through September and will commence with the first event of the 2023-2024 AZPCA Region Autocross Season on Saturday, October 7, 2023.
If you have any questions, please do not hesitate to contact the Autocross Co-Chairs, Rick A. and Kim K., at autocross @ az.pca.org.
Don’t forget about Valentine’s Day, it’ll be here in no-time.
