THE TEAM

Welcome FROM KATE

During lockdown, I, like many others, had time to look around and evaluate what my life was about and how to go about achieving the things that were really worthwhile. One of those was re-launching a magazine that had always been close to my heart – Gold Coast Panache Magazine. Speaking to my good friend Jenni Purdy, who was the original founder over 20 years ago, she was thrilled and delighted about the idea. So here we are, loud and proud about this new direction. For those who don’t know me I have lived on the Gold Coast for nearly 35 years. I finished my schooling here, went to university here and then lived in Japan for two years. (Yes, I was the only blonde living there at the time which was a lot of fun.) After that adventure I moved back home and started a sales and marketing career with Sea FM and Gold FM where I worked for 17 years. There was a valuable lesson I learned when I first applied for a position in radio. Kim Bending, who would become my first boss, remembered that I had called to see if I got the job, (I didn’t). However he was blown away that I had cold-called him to check and not long after I was fortunate enough to join the team. I am putting it out there - I love the Gold Coast with a passion. It is impossible to imagine living anywhere else and with my family, husband Simon and children Bailey and Zoe, we are here forever. We are great believers in giving back and to that end I have started a group called Gold Coast Wonder Women. It is a forum to help women connect and help each other in our city. There are very successful events being held consistently with the proceeds going to our charity of choice, The Gold Coast Community Fund. Over the past 10 years, events that I have staged have been the largest contributor of funds year in year out to this uniquely local charity. My father John, who sadly passed away a year ago, once said to me “Success will kill the haters, go and do what you are great at and that’s everything”. It is advice I have lived by ever since. I am particularly proud of what has been achieved with the launch of the new Gold Coast Panache Magazine. It has something for everyone. A wonderful fashion spread, social photos from all the major functions, and a dazzling spread on the new JW Marriott Gold Coast Resort & Spa. Queensland Sotheby’s International Realty have a wide range of the best properties for sale plus there are an array of recipes, books, health advice and so many other delights to enjoy. I hope you enjoy the read – it is a magazine designed for you. Finally a quote from the legendary Michael Jordan - “You never know what you can accomplish until you try.”

JENNI PURDY Nothing has pleased Jenni Purdy more than seeing her good friend Kate Bennett take over ownership of the Gold Coast Panache Magazine. For close to 16 years it was her ‘baby’ and she can watch as Kate and her team take the publication to new heights.

“It’s impossible” said my pride. “It’s risky” said my experience. “It’s impossible” said my reasoning. “Give it a try” whispered my heart. Those words describe exactly how I felt with every issue I put together of my former Magazine the ‘GOLD COAST Panache’ magazine. And what a glorious, wonderful, amazing ride it was. We became Australia’s longest running monthly regional publication during the fifteen and a half years I owned and operated the magazine. My job description was simply - “THE BOSS”. During this time due to my passion for the Gold Coast and its people, I

formed so many wonderful business relationships. When I sold the publication in 2009 I continued to do some work for Channel 9’s Sixty Minutes, News Limited’s Sunday Mail and also for good friends of 36 years Kate Bennett and Elizabeth Austin who publish SLIM and Label Magazines. With that long association and history, I was absolutely thrilled to receive a phone call from Kate Bennett informing me that due to the fact it was not being produced anymore and the name was available, would I have an issue if Kate registered the name and produced it? “Not at all,” said I.

Today I have a wonderful, new life in a completely different field and give Kate my total support and blessing, because I know she will put her heart and soul into creating a wonderful new product. Words can’t express how thrilled I am about the relaunch of the magazine I loved so much. So to Kate and the Gold Coast Panache magazine I say, ‘Je lève un verre à ton succès’. Or to translate into English, ‘I raise a glass to your success’… Champagne of course.

FROM SOMERSET COLLEGE SCHOOLGIRL TO WORLD STAR If you wrote a script detailing the stratospheric rise of Margot Robbie and submitted it to a producer as a plot line, it would be passed over as simply too far-fetched. Born in Dalby on Queensland’s Darling Downs she spent her formative years on the Gold Coast attending Somerset College. Her first foray into making movies was when she was cast by Aash Aaron in the low budget thriller ‘Vigilante’ in 2008 and another role in ‘I.C.U’. Before then she had limited knowledge of acting, her main performance highlights were at a circus school she attended at the urging of her mother.

Ovidiu Hrubaru / Shutterstock.com

With limited experience she made the bold step, at the urging of friends and her then agent, to apply for a role in ‘Neighbours’. She was accepted and starred in the popular soap until 2011 where she learnt about her craft and the discipline required to be a hardworking actor. Her naiveté was revealed in an interview years later when she was surprised to discover that some of her co-stars were married with children and that it was possible to have a successful career and life as an actor. She also confessed that getting that role on ‘Neighbours’ was probably going to be the biggest thing in her career.

GOLDEN GIRL

COVER FEATURE

That attitude changed when some of her cast mates went to Los Angeles to try their luck and after weighing up her options she also took the plunge. Impatient for success she harangued her agent to help her and his advice was be patient, save money and learn the ropes during pilot season. There were of course other hurdles to overcome. First and foremost was that as a born and bred Queenslander her strong Aussie accent, while considered cute by Americans, was not going to cut it in the industry. She went to a dialect coach who helped her lose that ‘bush twang’ and trained her to sound like an American. Her talent and drive helped because very quickly she was shooting a pilot in New York City. For a young woman who thought the Gold Coast was a ‘big’ city when compared with Dalby, the culture shock must have been enormous. The big break came when she was cast in TV series ‘Pan Am’, a fictional portrayal of the lives of a flight crew

based on the popular American airline. While it didn’t last as a series it did give her prominence which in turn had her cast in her breakthrough role as Naomi Lapaglia, the wife of Leonardo DiCaprio in Martin Scorsese’s ‘The Wolf of Wall Street’. Her screen stealing role and the sight of her purring towards Leonardo electrified audiences and suddenly she was the name on everybody’s lips. If there is one year that would have to rank as the moment it all started happening both professionally and privately it would be 2016. She appeared in ‘The Legend of Tarzan’ and lit up the screen as the bubble gum popping, baseball bat wielding mischief maker Harley Quinn in ‘Suicide Squad’. It was also 2016 that she married Tom Ackerly, a British assistant director she had met on the set of ‘Suite Francaise’ in 2013. Their relationship had blossomed away from the flash lights and gossip magazines until they held a surprise wedding surrounded by close friends and family in Byron Bay.

That union was also the start of Lucky Chap Productions, they formed with Josey McNamara and Sophia Kerr, which had as its main focus promoting female stories featuring female writers, producers and directors. The movie ‘I, Tonya’ was one of those productions with Margot in the lead role of Tonya Harding and for which she received the first of her two Academy Award nominations. Other projects by Lucky Chap have included the TV series ‘Dollface’ and the 2020 release ‘Birds of Prey’, a $75 million project with Margot reprising her role of Harley Quinn. Besides the Oscar nominations Margot has also been nominated for four Golden Globe Awards and five BAFTA Awards. To show how far she has come in such a short time she listed as being one of the world’s highest-paid actresses in 2019 by Forbes Magazine. If you are a believer that thoughts or wishes can manifest into reality, then Margot’s role as Sharon Tate in Quentin Tarantino’s ‘Once Upon a Time in Hollywood’ will emphasise that belief. The iconic director has long stated that he only intends to do 10 movies and this was to be his ninth. She famously wrote him a letter asking to be considered for any part in the upcoming shoot. In an interview with Quentin in Vogue she outlined part of the reason for the unconventional approach. “I had wanted to write the letter for years and years and years. Because I’d heard you were going to do 10 movies and I couldn’t bear the thought I would miss the boat and never see what one of your film sets was like: I needed to figure out a way to get on to set. Maybe LAUNCH ISSUE • 2021 17

I could even hold a door in the back of a scene,” she laughed. “But at the same time I wasn’t really in the right position to reach out to Quentin Tarantino and say: ‘Hello, my name is Margot and can I come visit your sets?” For his part, there was never any doubt as to who would play the role. “I’m not thinking about who is going to play Sharon at all, because for me there was no number two – it was you,” said Quentin. “You suggested her in so many different ways and you can more than hold your weight in this gigantic triangle that I’m trying to carry with three leads to tell the story. But this was the year you exploded and were now the most popular actress in town. It was something like within two weeks of me finishing the script, having it typed up, and out of the blue I get a letter sent to my house and it’s from you. I’m like, ‘What?!’ One minute I’m thinking about you and then I get this letter. In it you expressed that you’ve been a fan of my work for a long time – you and your whole family – and you say: ‘I just want you to know if there’s something you’d like me for, just let me know.’ It was damn near romantic the way the letter was written because it was so great. It was exactly what I wanted to hear. I couldn’t believe the happenstance of it all. Within a week we got together and were talking.” That was validation in the industry on an epic level – one of the most admired directors in Hollywood had nominated her as someone he really wanted to 18 GOLD COAST • PANACHE Magazine

work with in his penultimate film. The level of fame and control she had in all aspects of her life both professionally and personally was at an all-time high. During her rapid rise to the top she had worked with and more than held her own with some of Hollywood’s biggest names. In 2015 she had appeared alongside Will Smith in ‘Focus’ as a grifter learning the high stakes hustle. Then ‘Suite Francaise’ with Michelle Williams and Kristin Scott, ‘Z for Zachariah’ starring Chris Pyne and then a cameo role in ‘The Big Short’ about the GFC and the subsequent stock market crash. She received great reviews for all her roles and was as ever pushing forward to garner further experience and widen her choice in parts. ‘Whiskey Foxtrot Tango’ about life as a war correspondent in Afghanistan and the historical role of Jane in ‘The Legend of Tarzan’ soon followed. Her choice of characters and how she portrayed them were important to her and she explained about playing Tarzan’s sidekick.

she impressed all by the way she conducted herself on set and managed to steal the film in many respects by her wrenching portrayal. If any one project showed exactly how she had come since her first foray onto a film set on the Gold Coast it was ‘Birds of Prey’. She wanted to make an all-female, action film and approached Warner Bros. and then spent three years developing the project. This quote sums up her attitude. “I’d been thinking for quite some time how there was a real gap in the market for a female ensemble action film. And I love action films, and I think there’s a misconception perhaps subconsciously for people: action films are for dudes, girls don’t really like them. Which is just not true. So I knew I wanted to find that, and help put that on screen somewhere.”

“I definitely didn’t want her to be a damsel in distress, I just wanted her to be actively finding a way out of the situation. I didn’t want her to be sitting around waiting for someone to come save her but also to be, in the meantime, fixing the problem herself.”

Now 31, she has come a long, long way in 10 years but with that global success she has managed to maintain that Australian laid back, unruffled approach to life. No histrionics or diva insecurities – do your job, make sure everyone is moving forward with you and get it done as efficiently as possible.

For someone who sees herself as anything but a bombshell, she closed out the decade in a depiction of sexual harassment at Fox News ironically titled ‘Bombshell’. Starring alongside Charlize Theron and Nicole Kidman,

As one of her co-workers said, “She is more than happy to share a trailer if it means someone else will be more comfortable.” Margot Robbie may be a genuine superstar, but she has both feet planted firmly on the ground.

NOW & THEN

skool DAZE Suzanna Costello Where did you go to school? Somerset College, Class of 2003 Favourite subject? Drama/Theatre Arts Favourite teacher? Mrs Priest, my pastoral care teacher. She was more like a school mum. Did you get any awards? I got the International Baccalaureate Award for Theatre Arts Higher Level. My classmates voted me “most likely to become a roadie.” It’s been almost 18 years and I am still not sure what to do with that. Sports or academic? Neither, Arts. Did you love school and why? I adored school. Not just the education process, but my actual school. I was fortunate enough to have a wonderful group of friends, who are still my closest friends to this day and most of our children are now at Somerset College together. Somerset was a very high achieving school which supported me to step up my game, they started me on a lifelong pursuit of achievement and education. Best friend? Can I be greedy and have a few? Cara Tamandl, Ashley Phillips (nee, Harrison) Amanda Appel (nee, Freeman) and Anya Robbie. What did you want to be when you left school? My first degree was a Bachelor of Arts (Double Theatre Major) - I had my sights set on the stage. Being a litigation lawyer is not that different, right? Is life how you thought it would be or better? It is certainly different. My career obviously went on a major detour into the law from being a theatre kid. The people that I met at Somerset (as a student and now as a parent) were and remain to be the reason my life is better than I thought it would be when I was 16.

Attending school and getting an education is an all-important part of shaping us for life’s journey. We asked some prominent women for their memories from their time in class during those formative years.

Olivia Scott Where Did You Attend School? I am from Sydney so Ravenswood School for Girls up to Year 9 and then my last two years were at St Ives High School for Years 10 – 12. Favourite subject? Home Science - I still can’t cook, but I love eating so that was a bonus. I can sew on a button, but that’s about it. Favourite teacher? Mr Carragher and Mr Ramsay - both Maths teachers (my worst subject) and Stan Heuston (English), we were allowed to call him “Stan”, unheard of in the 80’s. We studied ‘Hotel California’ and learnt every word to the song. We all thought he was the coolest. I’m Facebook friends with all of them. Best memory at school? I really loved school. I had some great friends and most of the teachers were pretty good. My friendship group was a mixed bag of crazy, amazing people and I’m still in touch with a lot of them. Academic or sporting achievement? I won “The Sunshine Award” at the end of Year 12 (a made-up award of course, but I didn’t care, I still was very proud). I also won a running race when I was about 8 years old, but that was a bit of a Steven Bradbury moment. I was ridiculously proud of my blue ribbon. What did you want to be when you grew up? I’ve always had a love for radio so I’m glad I followed that path, even though I detoured a few times. Is your life now what you expected it to be? Life is pretty good!!! I have great family and friends and a job I love. LAUNCH ISSUE • 2021 19

Courtney Hancock Katrina Sanguigno Where Did You Attend School? Mansfield State High School In Brisbane. Favourite subject? My favourite subjects were Catering and Home Economics. I absolutely loved cooking and sewing. I enjoyed being involved in some of the events at school with my catering class. Favourite teacher? Mrs Box who was my Catering and Home Economics teacher. She was the best and a few years after graduating, when I was working in Events at Movie World, she contacted me to ask me to come back and do a talk to her current catering students. Best memory at school? Being involved in the High School Musicals – BATS & Man of Steel. I also loved being able to do roller skating as a sport at Mt Gravatt Skateway. Academic or sporting achievement? I was awarded the Year 12 Catering Award. What did you want to be when you grew up? I wanted to work in 5 star Hotel management. I did my work experience in Year 11 at the Gold Coast International Hotel (now QT Gold Coast). I managed to get a job there from that work experience at the end of Year 12. I worked my way into food and beverage management through the hotel training programs. I remember seeing the marketing/P.R. women at the time and realised that I wanted their job. That began my interest in all things marketing/P.R. Is your life now what you expected it to be? The last few years have been very difficult and challenging both physically and emotionally, but overall my life now is more than I ever expected it to be. I have always been very driven and goal oriented and I have ticked off many of the professional and personal goals I set myself in high school.

20 GOLD COAST • PANACHE Magazine

What schools did you attend? For primary school I went to Mary Help of Christians in Sawtell and then switched to John Paul College in Coffs Harbour for High School. Your favourite subject? Physical Education and anything to do with sport. Favourite teacher? Mr Larkins Best memory at school? Making so many beautiful friends most of whom I still have as friends today. Academic or sporting achievements? Sportsperson of the Year in High School. Did you love school and why? I loved seeing my beautiful friends every day. Also the teachers I had each year were extremely supportive of my Ironwoman dream. Plus I absolutely loved the school dress-up socials each month. What did you want to be when you left school? I am so lucky to be able say that I am doing exactly what I wanted to be doing when I left school - an Ironwoman. I actually became a professional athlete when I was 17 and still finishing my last year at school. Is life how you thought it would be or better? My life right now is what I had always dreamed it would be, so I feel blessed to be living my childhood dream every day.

Where did you go to school? I attended Southport State School until year 5 then St. Hilda’s from grades 6-12.

Where did you go to school? Lauriston Girls School in Armadale, Victoria.

Favourite subject? I loved Speech and Drama.

Favourite subject? Drama was something I loved followed by English.

Favourite teacher? Mrs Wilson who taught me art. Did you get any awards? Nothing outstanding. I was Form Captain of my class most years and was a prefect in my final year. I loved speech and drama and performing in the school plays. I was middle of the range academically and in sport. I enjoyed them both but wasn’t a shining star in either arena. Did you love school and why? I really did love school because of the friendships, the classes and hanging out there. In fact the lines became blurred as to whether I was a day girl or boarder. I was lucky I suppose that they were a fantastic group of girls, who are still my friends and I still treasure them to this day. What did you want to be when you left school? A school teacher. Is life how you thought it would be or better? I never really thought out how life would be but it has turned out to be great. I just turned 50 and after a few health concerns, I am just happy to be alive to enjoy it. I have a doting husband, a gorgeous family, and a beautiful group of friends. What more do you need?

Favourite teacher? Mrs Cheeseman who taught me in Grade 5. Did you get any awards? I won piano competitions and also some awards for drama and debating. Sports or academic? Academic. Did you love school? I did; especially the great friends I made and the many opportunities that occurred. I was also fortunate enough to go to boarding school overseas when I was 14 years of age. It was a great experience. Best friend? Caroline Marshall What did you want to be when you left school? An actress or journalist. Is life how you thought it would be or better? Life is nothing like what I had expected. I could never have written this script. We are all shaped by our life experiences and the connections with the people we encounter along the way. The twists and turns and rollercoaster ride of life has been extreme in many situations and moments of my life. I have learnt to always grow from the experience; good; bad; horrific or indifferent. I’m grateful for where I live for; having the courage to pursue my dreams and blessed to have my two incredible children.

Rebecca Baird Where did you go to school? I went to a high school in Toronto, Canada called AY Jackson. Favourite teacher? My favourite teacher was Bella Kovarsky who taught dance. Favourite subject? My favourite subject was science, especially chemistry. Did you receive any awards? Not that I can recall. How did you get to school? I literally walked 20 minutes in snow up to my knees, in minus 20c temperatures, to get to school. What did you want to be growing up? I spent most of my childhood training in classical ballet by the same teacher that taught Mikhail Baryshnikov, and dreamt about becoming a ballet dancer in the National Ballet School of Canada. I became a lawyer instead. Is life how you expected to be? No, it’s so much better than I expected!! I can’t believe that I got lucky enough to be stranded on this paradise island called Australia! I have personally curated my collection of dresses and accessories which I am proud to say sets me apart from other hire companies. Every dress, every accessory look is chosen by me and usually with a beautiful friend or muse in mind. My own personal style is what drives my decisions, but also I strive to create a style that flatters a women’s shape and enhances her femininity so that the dress makes a statement when you enter a room. Every women has a different body shape and personality so the key is to find what suits them and create a unique look for them that will make then the ‘belle of the ball’ no matter the occasion. It’s a wonderful journey, from the first appointment to the final fitting, that will take them through to an event and beyond.

Designing

WOMAN

From a rural upbringing on a sheep station near Geelong, Liz Clift moved to the Gold Coast as a young girl and became a fashion force in her new home town.

WHAT IS YOUR FIRST BIG FASHION MEMORY? My formal introduction to the world of fashion was at the age of 17 when I was accepted to enter the Gold Coast Fashion Awards. I won every section including the prestigious Gown of the Year award. Sir Bruce Small made the presentation and invited me to not only join the promotion team of the Gold Coast Visitors Bureau, but to design a collection of resort wear for his interstate promotional tours. This proved to be beneficial as one of the garments was “slightly” see through and made the front pages of major newspapers. Sir Bruce was ecstatic and invited me to open a boutique at his exclusive Isle of Capri shopping Centre. 36 GOLD COAST • PANACHE Magazine

YOU HAVE SPENT MOST OF YOUR LIFE ON THE GOLD COAST. WHAT WAS LIFE LIKE BACK THEN? I was born in Geelong and grew up on a sheep property in Lovely Banks. I moved to Surfers Paradise when I was 12. My parents Harry and Lorna Brough owned Surfside 6 Holiday Apartments on the beachfront in the heart of Surfers. I missed my tomboy lifestyle on the farm but soon adapted to throwing on a bikini and surfing. I finished my schooling at St Hilda’s and was a regular at Saturday morning detention….for a number of reasons but mostly playing hooky to be a bikini girl extra in all of the movies being shot in and around the Gold Coast at the time. Growing up on the Gold Coast in

the late 60’s early 70’s was heaven on a stick. We all knew each other and it was so safe. There were great venues, cabarets and home grown entertainers. The Bee Gees attended the Surfers Paradise State School for a short time. The town had a heart and there was a real sense of community. DID OUR LAID BACK, BEACH LIFESTYLE AFFECT YOUR DESIGN AND RETAIL PHILOSOPHY? I fell into design simply due to the climate. You needed very little fabric and could run up a bikini or dress and wear out to the beach or a party an hour later. My clothes were quite Avantgarde - Mary Quant meets Woodstock. I was inundated with orders and at the age of 19 was wholesaling to local boutiques. DID YOU HAVE ANY FASHION MENTORS? My mentors then were three wonderful women - Ivy Hassard, Helene Walder and Paula Stafford.

FASHION

was hilarious. Of all the celebrities we met through JT, the stand out was definitely George Ross who was Donald Trump’s real estate advisor. George was 93 years of age and what an encyclopedia of business knowledge!

YOU STUDIED IN PARIS – HOW MANY YEARS, HOW DID THAT COME ABOUT AND WHAT WAS THE MOST IMPORTANT LESSON YOU LEARNED IN THAT TIME? I sold my Liz Brough Design Boutique on the Isle of Capri when I was 22. My first husband Peter Speirs and I opened a courtyard restaurant in Orchid Avenue in the heart of Surfers Paradise. We were known as one of the leading eateries. I catered for hundreds of clients each day and managed my wholesale design business but still wanted so much more. I talked Peter into sub-leasing our restaurant and joining me in Paris while I studied at The Paris American Academy Ecole de Beaux Arts. I felt like I was really coming alive - some of my tutors where Karl Lagerfeld, Sonia Rykiel and Chantal Thomass. Karl encouraged me to follow my passion for fashion and to hand over my role in the restaurant and focus on designing full time. One thing I remember him saying is to always retain a sense of humour in my work. My time there has proved to be quite successful as they have invited me to come on board as a guest lecturer. I am now their Global Ambassador. After Paris I had two children, Andrew and Michelle. We sold the restaurant, Peter and I divorced and I then concentrated on designing uniforms for International Hotels, Luxury Resorts, costumes for stage shows, wardrobes for movies. I married Bill Clift from Chattanooga Tennessee in 1990 and had another son Brandon. We travelled regularly to USA. I sold my Couture and Ready-to-wear ranges in Beverly Hills, West Palm Beach and Honolulu. Our fashion shows were spectacular, and complete sell outs. Fabrics were from Paris and Zurich with many of them televised.

My son Brandon and I spent a full day with him at JT’s home in Florida. One of my great joys is being able to include my daughter Michelle Massey and son Brandon Clift in my journey with JT Foxx. He and his team are coaching us all. If only I had this opportunity when I was at their age. YOU ‘RETIRED’ FOR A VERY BRIEF TIME AND THEN FOUND THE JT FOXX ORGANISATION. WHAT IS THE MAIN FOCUS AND HOW HAS THAT CHANGED YOUR OUTLOOK ON BUSINESS AND LIFE? Four years ago I semi-retired, I closed my Boutique, Liz Clift International, and opened an exclusive showroom in Bundall to showcase my European imported designer labels. By chance I came across JT Foxx at a Robert Kiyosaki sales event in 2018 and he blew me away. I have worked for myself since I was 17 and listening to JT I realised how much more I had to learn. Since then he has invited me to speak on stage in South Africa to over 1,000 young entrepreneurs, and I’ve also done testimonials in Istanbul, Dubai, Sydney and Brisbane. He invited me to interview Brooke Shields on her fashion line and also Hollywood star Vince Vaughn - both events were in L.A. in front of 2,500 people. If someone had told me four years ago what my life would be like now I wouldn’t have believed it. Brooke was a sweetheart and Vince turned the interview back on me, which he thought

ANY ADVICE FOR A YOUNG PERSON STARTING OUT AS A FASHION DESIGNER? I mentor young fashion designers and always say fashion is more than a drawing. Start at the bottom and learn from the cutting room floor. It is easy to sit back and design and pay someone else to make the pattern but you must know the industry inside and out. Passion is the key, you simply have to have it. Study all great designers past and present. Live and breathe fashion. Be aware of what people are wearing in the streets. Follow fashion bloggers. Create your own style. DO YOU HAVE PLANS FOR THE FUTURE? Hopefully travelling again soon with my husband Bill and family. To resume my fashion shoots on the Turkish Riviera and to continue my work as Global Ambassador for The Paris American Academy. I was honoured to be invited to join the Fashion Council Queensland by Liz Golding. I am part of an amazing team of Fashion Professionals with a focus of putting Queensland on the map with all things fashion. LAUNCH ISSUE • 2021 37

PEOPLE

PASSIONATE PEOPLE

Passion is a powerful driving force. When you’re a passionate person, you wear your heart on your sleeve. Being passionate person is challenging, sometimes heartbreakingly so. It means you lead with your heart, and you put it on the line more often than most. JOHN-PAUL LANGBROEK MP Member for Surfers Paradise, Shadow Minister for Seniors, Communities and Disability Services, Shadow Minister for Multiculturalism and Aboriginal & Torres Strait Islander Partnerships

I would love to shout this from the rooftops - I love where we live! I was born in The Netherlands and the family came to the Gold Coast when it was a small, disjointed town of 30,000 people. We lived in Nobby Beach and Southport (what is known as Chirn Park now before it became very trendy). My sister Kate, who has a high profile radio career and is also a regular on The Project and The Panel, and I went to Burleigh Heads State School. My father was a teacher there whilst Mum was an Avon lady. After completing my dentistry degree at the University of Queensland, I went to London where I met my wife Stacey. After spending three years in the UK, we decided to return and our three children were born here. We set up dental practices in Surfers Paradise and

Ashmore which we ran until 2014. I was always interested in politics and in 2004, I was elected as the Member for Surfers Paradise in the Queensland Parliament. It’s been a great privilege to represent the local community, to work on behalf of all Gold Coasters, and to make it the best place to live, work, play and raise a family. Having travelled extensively around Queensland, Australia and the rest of the world, I proudly never miss a chance to spread the word wherever I go about about the best place on earth -‘The Fabulous Goldie’. Ours is a New World city filled with great people who live and work in a beautiful and safe environment. We are a true melting pot of migrants and locals welcoming all who come here and are prepared to ‘have a go’.

CATHERINE FITZSIMMONS Territory Business Development & Relationships Manager, Currumbin Clinic

I am currently the Territory Business Development and Relationships Manager for the Currumbin Clinic. It is a long way from my first job at Sanity Music when I was 15. (There are still some songs I can’t listen to that were played on repeat.) It did teach me about customer service and being organised for work. That was fun as a teenager but the best job I had before working for Currumbin Clinic was as an Area Manager at Aldi. I loved having the autonomy to discover my skills and capabilities and I worked with some great people from around the world too. My career to here has taken a few different paths but I became a registered nurse (RN). That was inspired by my Nan who was also a RN. She had such a caring nature while being so strong and independent in everything she did. She passed on some great advice to me that I still think of everyday.

I have been asked for my best life and business advice and it is twofold. Try and find something to be grateful for in difficult times and in business if you can create a great work culture, staff will always go above and beyond. (I am tempted to say ‘Fake it ‘til you make it’ as a joke!) My move to the Gold Coast was in 2004 from Melbourne when my then boyfriend was here. That relationship didn’t last but I loved it so much I stayed here and ended up meeting my husband. I have made so many great friends and really love what I do at Currumbin Clinic so my life is good. I do have an unfulfilled ambition which is to write a non-fiction book but that will have to wait until my children are a bit older. I was asked to finish this sentence for this article. Life is …. And my answer is ‘Always manageable with amazing girlfriends and champagne!’ LAUNCH ISSUE • 2021 41

BREAST CARE CENTRE A ONE STOP CARE SPOT FOR BREAST CANCER Gold Coast Private Hospital launched a dedicated Breast Care Centre in June this year to offer woman with breast cancer a range of services under one roof.

BREAST CARE NURSE SHARRA ARTZ

The beauty of this new initiative is that women living with the disease are guided through the different stages of their treatment by a dedicated breast care nurse. The centre offers on-site breast surgeons, nurses, radiographers, psychologists, physiotherapists, oncologists (medical and radiational), pathologists and a geneticist to ensure everything for the betterment of the patients.

It is not uncommon for women to experience discomfort after their procedures so the hospital created a nurturing take home care pack. Partnering with local businesses, the pack includes deodorant paste from Beautiful Batches, lip balm from A Bit Hippy, healing balms and wound care from Great Health Company, and breast pillows from St James Church sewing group.

Breast Care Nurse Sharra Artz, who has over 20 years’ experience in oncology nursing, has been fundamental in setting up the service and is essential in the patient’s breast cancer journey. “I feel very blessed in my role of being able to offer support, education, guidance, comfort and a friendly face for what must be one of the most challenging and overwhelming times in someone’s life, said Sharra. “My role is to be by the patient’s side from the beginning, gently guiding and answering questions, and working to ensure all the patients’ needs are being met – right into survivorship where women need a different type of emotional support.”

Breast Cancer Patient Tani Nokes has experienced the love and care at the Breast Care Centre and spoke of her gratitude. “I feel really blessed with the support l got from the hospital. I was fortunate to get an early diagnosis, and am always telling everyone I know to book in immediately for an ultrasound. It may sound strange, but it was a wonderful experience at what could have been a very stressful time. I had no idea what to expect but I was able to contact Nurse Sharra at any time of the day or night - I didn’t have to worry about a thing”.

RECIPES

RIGATONI MOZZARELLA BAKE This is not so much a recipe, but more a set of instructions on what to do with left-over ragù or tomato sauce. The quantities are easy to reduce or increase, so use this as a guide. Really, this works with anything that’s going to hold up well when covered in cheese and re-baked. In other words, avoid oil and seafood based pasta sauces. There is a method to my madness in asking you to play with your food and make the rigatoni stand up – it gives the cheese hollow gaps to melt into, which just means an even distribution of cheese.

Serves 2 250ml (1 cup) left-over pasta sauce 125g grated regular or buffalo mozzarella 80g (1 cup) grated Parmigiano Reggiano Extra-virgin olive oil, for drizzling Not applicable for fresh pasta use dried Rigatoni pasta for two. Preheat the oven to 200°C fan-forced. Bring a large saucepan of water to a lively boil and season as salty as the sea. Add the pasta and cook until molto al dente. You want it to be underdone, as the pasta will continue to cook in the oven. Drain the pasta and toss it through your chosen sauce – it helps to heat up the sauce here, too. Tip the pasta into a 20 cm x 14 cm or 1.2 litre baking dish and, using your hands, turn the rigatoni so they are standing upright, with the hollow rounds facing upwards. Scatter over the mozzarella and Parmigiano Reggiano and drizzle with olive oil, then bake in the oven for 20–30 minutes, until golden.

MUSSELS, ROASTED CHERRY TOMATOES, FENNEL Mussel shells are the perfect vessel to catch fregola or other small pasta shapes. Here, I’ve cooked them alongside a zesty, sticky sauce of cherry tomatoes, fennel, preserved lemon and harissa. At the end, I toss through the cooked fregola, which plump up in the mussel sauce with a succulence that only pasta can do. Serves 2 2 tbsp extra-virgin olive oil 2 garlic cloves, finely chopped 250g cherry tomatoes 1 small fennel, chopped, fronds reserved 1 tsp harissa 2 preserved lemon quarters, skin only, finely sliced 125ml (½ cup) dry white wine 1kg mussels, scrubbed and debearded (if you have any mussels that are open, give them a tap; discard any that do not close) Zest of 1 lemon Crusty bread, to serve FRESH PASTA FOR 2 fregola or DRIED PASTA FOR 2 ditalini, fregola, risoni

Place a large deep frying pan with a lid over medium heat. Add the olive oil and garlic and sauté for 30 seconds, then add the tomatoes, fennel, harissa and preserved lemon. Give everything a stir and cook for 5 minutes. Add the wine and let it bubble away for about a minute. Reduce the heat to medium-low, then cover and leave to cook, stirring occasionally, for 15–20 minutes. Bring a large saucepan of water to a lively boil and season as salty as the sea. Add the pasta and cook until molto al dente Back to the sauce. Increase the heat to medium, arrange the mussels over the top of the sauce and cover. Cook for 5–10 minutes, until the mussels open. Some might take slightly longer and if this is the case, remove the opened mussels so they don’t overcook. Discard any unopened mussels. Drain the pasta and add it to the pan, along with any open mussels you took out. Give everything a big stir and remove from the heat, then scatter over the lemon zest and reserved fennel fronds. Serve straight from the pan, with bread on the side to mop up the juice.

BUFFALO MOZZARELLA CREAM, SLOW-ROASTED CHERRY TOMATOES Serves 2 250g cherry tomatoes, halved 2 garlic cloves, finely sliced 2 tbsp extra-virgin olive oil, plus extra for drizzling Sea salt and freshly ground black pepper 125g buffalo mozzarella, roughly chopped, plus the brine from the bag 100ml pouring cream 1 tbsp salted butter Handful of grated Parmigiano Reggiano, plus extra to serve FRESH PASTA FOR 2 farfalle, garganelli or DRIED PASTA FOR 2 farfalle, fusilli, penne, rigatoni Preheat the oven to 130°C fan-forced. Place the tomato and garlic on a large baking tray, drizzle over the olive oil and season with salt and pepper. Give everything a good toss around to coat, then arrange the tomato in a single layer, cut-side up. Roast for 1 ½–2 hours or until starting to dehydrate. You’re looking for a tomato chip. Place a saucepan over medium heat and add the mozzarella, 2 ½ tablespoons of the brine from the bag, the cream and butter and stir to melt. Be patient, as the mozzarella takes 15–20 minutes to melt and you’ll still be left with a good chunk of the stretched skin. Persevere, stirring frequently, to encourage it to melt through the cream. Discard the residue of cheese that hasn’t melted by this stage (there will be some), as it will be rubbery and the flavour will have been sucked into your now creamy and seductive sauce. Meanwhile, bring a large saucepan of water to a lively boil and season as salty as the sea. Add the pasta and cook until al dente. Using a slotted spoon, add the pasta directly to the sauce, along with 60 ml (¼ cup) of the cooking water and the Parmigiano Reggiano. Stir vigorously to ensure the pasta is well coated. Divide the pasta between bowls and scatter over the tomato. Drizzle with olive oil and finish with a very light dusting of extra Parmigiano Reggiano and pepper. Eat straight away.

PRAWNS, TOMATO, PISTACHIO Clean the prawns by chopping off their heads and removing the shells – keep everything, as this will be the base of your prawn stock, which will enrich the sauce. Devein the prawns – I use a toothpick to help with this. Heat a large saucepan over medium heat. Add 1 tablespoon of the olive oil, along with the carrot, celery and onion, and cook for 5 minutes or until soft. Throw in the prawn shells and heads. Using the back of a wooden spoon, crush the heads to draw out all the flavour, then cook for 3–5 minutes, until the prawn shells change colour. Add the wine and leave it to boil and bubble for 2 minutes. Add the tomato paste and a pinch of salt, along with 1 litre of water. Reduce the heat to low and leave it to simmer away for 15 minutes. Strain the prawn stock into a jug, discarding the prawn shells and heads and vegetables. This is now a lovely, flavourpacked stock that’s ready to boost your pasta sauce. Keep warm. Place a frying pan over medium heat. Add the remaining 2 tablespoons of olive oil, the garlic, oregano and chilli (if using) and cook for about 30 seconds, until fragrant. Add the tomato and season with salt and pepper.

Serves 4 500g unpeeled raw prawns 3 tbsp extra-virgin olive oil, plus extra for drizzling 1 small carrot, roughly chopped 1 celery stalk, roughly chopped 1 small onion, roughly chopped 100ml dry white wine 1 tbs tomato paste sea salt and freshly ground black pepper 1 garlic clove, finely chopped 2 tsp chopped oregano leaves, plus extra to serve Pinch of chilli flakes (optional) 300g cherry tomatoes, halved, or roma tomatoes chopped Zest of 1 lemon Unsalted chopped pistachios, lightly toasted, to serve

RECIPE EXTRACT FROM SATURDAY NIGHT PASTA

Give everything a good toss around and leave to cook for 15 minutes or until the tomato is soft and has released its juice. Add 125 ml (½ cup) of your prawn stock, then leave to cook for another 5 minutes to allow the flavours to come together. The remaining stock will keep in the fridge for 3 days or in the freezer for up to 3 months (just remember to label it in the freezer; if you’re anything like me, you’ll forget what it is). Throw the prawns into the pan and cook for 3–5 minutes, until their little blue bodies blush pink. Meanwhile, bring a large saucepan of water to a lively boil and season as salty as the sea. Add the pasta and cook until al dente. Using tongs, add the pasta directly to the sauce, along with the lemon zest. Give the pan a really big shake and stir to bring everything together. Divide the pasta among bowls, ensuring there is even prawn distribution (people get very upset) and scatter over the pistachios. Drizzle over a little olive oil and finish with a few oregano leaves for prettiness.

MIXED TOMATO, GOUDA & PESTO TART Serves 6 375g sheet of ready-rolled puff pastry 3 tbsp tomato purée 125g Gouda, sliced 50g sundried tomatoes 2 large tomatoes, sliced 80g cherry tomatoes, quartered 1 egg, beaten 3 tbsp pesto Fresh basil leaves, to garnish Salt and freshly ground black pepper 1. If you are using frozen puff pastry, defrost it overnight in the fridge or at room temperature 1–2 hours before you start cooking, but don’t unroll it until you’re ready to use it. Preheat the oven to 220°C/200°C fan. 2. Unroll the puff pastry on to a large, flat oven tray lined with a non-stick baking sheet. Use a sharp knife to gently score a two fingerwidths, border around the edge of the pastry. This will puff up into a beautiful, flaky crust. 3. Spread the tomato purée over the base of the pastry, keeping within the scored border. Top with the Gouda, followed by the mixed tomatoes and season with salt and pepper. 4. Use a pastry brush or your fingers to paint the beaten egg all over the pastry border; this gives it a shiny, golden finish. Season with salt and pepper and bake for 20–25 minutes, or until the pastry is crisp and golden and the base is cooked. 5. Once baked and still warm, dot the pesto over the top and scatter with fresh basil leaves. Serve with a simple side salad such as rocket with a balsamic dressing.

GRIDDLED MAPLE & BROWN SUGAR PINEAPPLE with vanilla ice cream Serves 4 1 medium ripe pineapple 2 tbsp maple syrup 1 tbsp soft light brown sugar Pinch of ground ginger Zest and juice of 2 limes, plus lime wedges to serve 1 tbsp butter Small handful of fresh basil and mint leaves, to decorate Vanilla ice cream, to serve 1. Prepare the pineapple by removing the top and tail with a sharp knife and then cutting away the tough skin on the sides so you’re just left with the pineapple flesh. Use a pineapple corer and then cut into circles, or cut the pineapple in half lengthways and then into wedges, removing the core from each wedge. 2. Make the marinade by mixing the maple syrup, brown sugar, ground ginger, lime zest and juice together in a bowl. Pour into a zip lock bag, add the pineapple flesh and leave to marinate for at least 20 minutes and up to 4 hours. 3. Place a griddle pan over a high heat. Lightly brush the pan with the butter to stop the pineapple sticking. Add the pineapple, reserving the marinade, and griddle for 2 minutes on each side until golden and charred. 4. Scatter over a few torn basil and mint leaves. Serve with vanilla ice cream, lime wedges and a drizzle of the reserved marinade. NOTE: Save any leftovers to have for breakfast the next day – It’s delicious on top of yoghurt or granola, or thrown into fruit salads. Store the cooked pineapple in an airtight container for up to 2 days. To make this vegan and dairy free, use coconut oil to griddle the pineapple and serve with coconut ice cream.

SUPPORT IS AT HAND

Recovery is about progression, not perfection. Addiction and the problematic use of drugs and alcohol is widely accepted to be associated with trauma and attachment difficulties. Self-medication can be understandable or even seen as normal or expected in some circumstances. These problems can also begin simply by the chance combination of genetics and exposure to a substance, such as a prescribed sleeping tablet or pain killer. Abnormal or unnatural rewards from substances can co-opt the brain circuitry usually employed to promote social interaction and natural reward processing, in order to shift attachment towards the addiction. These conditions don’t tend to occur in a vacuum; mental health problems co-aggregate and families are often affected. People with addictions often hide their problems and can 82 GOLD COAST • PANACHE Magazine

be unreasonably morally blamed by others and themselves. A substance use disorder is an impaired control over any substance (chemical) or non-substance (behavioural/ process), which can cause major social problems, risky behaviour, and tolerance or withdrawal symptoms. Substance use disorders cloud a person’s regular judgement, which affects their decision making, memory, learning, and control over certain behaviours. Substance use disorders are widespread across all sociodemographics — often bearing severe consequences for sufferers, whose symptoms are often chronic and relapsing in nature. Risk factors for substance use disorders include cultural and social triggers, as well as genetic predispositions. The Addictive Disorders program at Currumbin Clinic is designed for people diagnosed with substance relative and addictive disorders who want to learn and expand their knowledge and skills towards abstinence based recovery in a supportive atmosphere. While it

is abstinence based it also includes a more psychodynamic approach. It covers many areas including communication and assertiveness training, managing thoughts and feelings, building trust in relationships, relaxation and recreation, relapse triggers and coping mechanisms plus relapse prevention. The program is designed to provide the resources, education and clinical support to enhance the ability to change the way to think, feel and behave. The program is DVA approved and runs every Friday for eight weeks. Patients interested in attending this program will need a referral to a Psychiatrist with admission rights to Currumbin Clinic. HABIT FORMING HOW TO GET MOTIVATED AND START HEALTHY HABITS.

Nowadays, the focus on wellness and becoming healthier through making positive changes in life - i.e., new gym memberships to lose weight, eating healthier foods, going to sleep earlier, quit smoking, and so on – is at the forefront of most peoples’ minds. Although setting the intention to change behaviors is a great first step, oftentimes this leads to failed attempts, as the pressures of everyday life interfere with the ability to maintain changes. Therefore, this article looks to promote behavior changes by providing you with a deeper understanding of behaviors and cultivate mindful awareness of what drives our daily choices. In order to promote sustainable change, it is important to focus on the automatic habits and patterns that are involved in your routine. Habits form out of a necessity and this is commonly referred to as a “Habit Loop”. Let us take the simple goal of wanting to develop an early morning exercise routine. In this example, a common habit loop involves the following pattern: 84 GOLD COAST • PANACHE Magazine

• THE CUE: You wake early to an alarm and still feel tired. • THE ROUTINE: You hit the snooze button to quiet the alarm and roll back over to sleep more. • THE REWARD: As a result, you satisfy the necessity to save energy and rest more, missing your morning workout. The “cue” is set by whatever leads to the tired feeling upon waking. This could be your stressful lifestyle, lack of sleep, poor dietary habits, and nutrient deficiencies, etc., and induces the “craving” sensation to roll over and sleep again. If you are not mindful about the craving to hit the snooze button on the alarm, and thus satisfying the necessity for more sleep, you will mindlessly follow through with the same routine.

ADDRESSING THE SELFDEFEATING CYCLE First, you must identify the underlying causes of the cue. In our example, this would mean looking at those factors that could be affecting your energy

levels each morning, as previously mentioned. A few minor corrections in energy-draining behaviors may be enough to give you the motivation to get out of bed in the early morning. These simple lifestyle modifications may have additional unintended health benefits as well. Along with identifying the causes of the cue, you can help break the habit cycle by introducing new, health-promoting routines to be used when the craving sensation sets the cycle in motion. These routines should be easy to employ whenever the necessity triggers the demand for the routine. In our example, a simple routine change may mean putting the alarm clock across the room so that you must stand up and cross the room to hit the snooze button. Although not foolproof, you are more likely to stay awake if you have already left the bed. With a deeper understanding of the cues, routines, and rewards that direct your daily life, you can adapt a simple change to any habit and make a positive routine. The reported time

ACT YOUR AGE The AIA Vitality Age Calculator is an easy way to check your health and age. A new health and wellbeing calculator reveals Australians are ageing up to nine years faster than they should be. Some Women ageing better than men; Gen X are the worst-off generation for real health age. A new health and wellbeing age calculator unveiled by AIA has revealed the troubling insight that some age groups have an average health age of up to nine years older than their chronological age. The AIA Vitality Age Calculator, launched by leading health and life insurer AIA Australia and its science-backed health and wellness program AIA Vitality, asks participants a range of questions based on their demographics, as well as their key health and wellbeing habits and behaviours. The calculator takes into consideration exercise habits, diet, smoking status, alcohol consumption and mental wellbeing; to then produce an average “health and wellbeing” age, which compares against the user’s chronological age. Using national data,

AIA Vitality has generated an average health age profile of the nation which shows that females are faring better than their male counterparts when it comes to their average health age. When comparing how the generations are ageing, Gen X (40-54 years) was the worst performing, with a health age that is up to nine years older than their chronological age. Millennials (18-39 years) were the best performing group; however, their health age is still up to three years older than their actual age. AIA Australia is encouraging Australians to use the AIA Vitality Age Calculator to learn their AIA Vitality Age. The launch will coincide with the ‘Battle of the Ages’ campaign on AIA Vitality’s social media platforms, which will provide support to each generation to reduce the gap between their chronological age and AIA Vitality Age. • Team Millennials will be led by AIA Vitality Ambassadors Bec Judd and Laura Henshaw • Team Gen X will be led by AIA Vitality Ambassadors Shane Crawford and Hamish McLachlan • Team Boomers will be led by Richard Wilkins. Keep it Cleaner co-founder and AIA Vitality Ambassador Laura Henshaw said, “The AIA Vitality Age Calculator

provides valuable insights into our state of our health and wellbeing. I can’t wait to lead Team Millennials to improve their AIA Vitality Age in the Battle of the Ages challenge!” The AIA Vitality Age Calculator also reveals the following generational insights when it comes to the real health age of Australians: • Millennials have the healthiest Body Mass Index (BMI) range, while Baby Boomers (55-74 years) were the worst performing when it comes to their BMI. • Millennials are doing the most exercise, while Baby Boomers are doing the least. • Baby Boomers eat the most fruit and vegetables, while Millennials trail behind the other generations. • Gen X drink the most alcohol per week, while Millennials drink the least. • Millennials had the highest distress score when it comes to their mental health, while Baby Boomers had the best mental health score. CEO and Managing Director of AIA Australia and New Zealand, Damien Mu, said: “While the results may show a concerning picture about the state of the nation’s health and wellbeing, it is also an opportunity for Australians to make healthier lifestyle choices every day. It does not need to be big things, which can sometimes feel overwhelming and unachievable. Instead, start with simple and small changes, which in turn can lead to a significant longterm improvement. “With health at the forefront of everyone’s minds at the moment, we have found ourselves in the midst of a global fight for healthier, longer, better lives,” said Mu. “As a health and life insurer with the goal of championing Australia and New Zealand to be the healthiest nations in the world, we have a crucial role to play in educating Australians about how they can improve their health every day – which is why we’re excited to launch the AIA Vitality Age Calculator to the public. We want Australians to use the calculator so that they can be empowered to understand how their health is faring, and the steps they can take to make changes for the better,” he added. The AIA Vitality Age Calculator is free for all Australians to use at www.aiavitalityage.com.au. LAUNCH ISSUE • 2021 85

PEOPLE

GOLD STARS We asked local stars to tell us about their talented careers and reveal where it all started and their career highlights..

NATHAN HEDGER

My name is Nathan Hedger and I have been performing magic for about 15 years. I have been doing it as a profession since 2014 and full time for about five years. I perform both roving magic and stage shows however I get the most joy performing close up magic in a roving environment. When you first want to become a magician you see all these tricks and illusions and want to know how it’s done. With some of them, when you become a professional, you know the secret so you don’t get that same amazement as easily as you used to. For me I had to find another way to enjoy it, and that’s when I began to love the audience reactions. That is what I love and strive for. Being part of making someone smile, or laugh or go ‘what the... that’s not possible!’ is an incredible feeling. I still remember the moment I really thought I wanted to do this, I was on a lunch break back when I was working for Supercheap Auto, went to get some food and walked past a couple sitting at a bar table. I had some of my early magic on me at the time and decided to ask if I could show them a trick. They agreed, I performed some tricks, thanked them, got my food and went back to work. About 30 minutes later, they came to find me at work to thank me. It turned out the woman had just lost her job, a few difficult things were going on and it was quite a rough day, yet that little bit of magic really turned things around and made her day so much better. To me, I didn’t do anything super special, but I realised being able to make someone’s day or make them smile, laugh or have their mind blown, (in a positive way), with magic, that is pretty special and I want to keep doing it.

After a challenging time in the world, especially for those in the performing arts, Riely Saville is back and she’s ready to sparkle. She has performed at many of our iconic venues including Movie World, Sea World, The Star, Dracula’s Cabaret and Pink Flamingo but her history as a performer started with the training and discipline of classical ballet. Her baby steps, literally, started at the age of three when she began dance classes with Dawn and Joy Ransley before joining the Gold Coast City Ballet. That in turn led to an invitation to join the prestigious Australian Ballet School in Melbourne, before dancing with The Melbourne Ballet Company. The Ajkun Ballet Theatre in New York City was the next to call, where she danced the role of Juliet in “Romeo & Juliet” and received a standing ovation for her performance. Staying in the one dance lane was never going to be enough for Riely who returned to the Gold Coast and

set about expanding her range of talents. So much more than a ’triple threat’, she soon could add the following skills to her resume besides dance she also, acts, sings, stilt walks, roller skates, martial arts and aerial arts. That unique skill set has paid dividends because over her career she has worked for some of the biggest names in showbiz, including Kanye West, Disney, Universal Studios, Royal Caribbean International, and MAC Makeup. She also is about to star in a yet-tobe released feature film but cannot as yet reveal more details. After a stint with Universal Studios in Singapore and then performing throughout Asia, Riely returned home again and set up her own entertainment business, EPIC Creations. BUSINESS

SEVEN WAYS TO GROW YOUR BUSINESS

At Element we work with you to help grow your business. We’ve all been through a lot recently and it’s likely you know you need to make some changes in your business. Change won’t just happen on its own. You have to make the choice to change. The first action is being aware you need to change. It’s unlikely your business has been able to continue as normal and changes need to be made. The next step is to accept that you need to change. It may not be easy. But the alternative of not changing won’t be easy either. Once you’ve accepted change is needed, you need to take action. What steps do you need to take to enable the change? Most people get stuck here. They may respond to immediate actions while in crisis mode but fail to take the action required. To make sure you do take action, accountability is required. Being held accountable by someone independent really does make things happen. And finally, take time to acknowledge the change you’ve actioned. Take your team on the journey and give positive reinforcement. 94 GOLD COAST • PANACHE Magazine

We have outlined below seven ways for you to grow your business whilst you embrace this change:

1

Increase your customer retention rate. It’s much cheaper to make sales to existing customers, in fact statistics show that it’s six times easier and cheaper to make sales to existing customers than it is to new customers.

2

Generate more leads. The best way to generate more leads is to delight your customers so they become promoters and provide you with more leads.

3

Increase your conversion rate. Do you measure how successful you are at converting leads, quotes and proposals into sales? Do you regularly review why you aren’t converting more?

4

Increase transaction frequency encourage your customers to buy from you more often.

5

Increase the transaction value. This doesn’t necessarily mean increasing your prices. Think about how you could add more value to your customers.

6

Reduce your variable costs. These are the costs which increase as sales increase, such as direct labour, cost of materials and sales commissions.

7

Reduce your overheads. These are your fixed costs like phone, power, rent, office supplies. As Albert Einstein famously said, “Insanity is doing the same thing, over and over again, but expecting different results”. We all know this, right? So, what do we have to do differently this year? You have four choices:

• Do nothing. • Retreat. • Take normal amounts of action. • Take massive amounts of action.

How we can help Firstly, if you don’t already have a Business Plan, we can work with you to develop yours over a half-day session. If you need a bit of accountability to ensure you’re on track to achieving your goals, we can meet with you regularly to review and reset the goals and actions in your Business Plan. And finally, if you’re not a client, we offer a one hour complimentary meeting to establish if we’re the right fit for you. LEGAL

NAVIGATING YOUR SEPARATION…

How to swim and not sink A MARRIAGE OR RELATIONSHIP ENDING IS COMMONLY UNDERSTOOD TO BE ONE OF THE TOP THREE MOST TRAUMATIC EVENTS THAT A PERSON CAN EXPERIENCE. THE EXPERIENCE CAN BE LIKENED TO BEING CAUGHT IN A RIP IN THE OCEAN. Unsure as to direction, uncertainty of your thoughts and capacity to move, combined with periods of treading water and calm stillness. Just as you cannot control the movement of the ocean, there are aspects of your separation or divorce which cannot be controlled. Those aspects are the processes and procedures put in place by the various pieces of law and rules of court as well as the conduct, responses and reactions of the other party involved in the separation. What you can control however, is knowledge. Obtaining advice as early in the separation process as possible is the key to being able to make sensible and logical decisions about how to wade into that deep water and make it out safely. 96 GOLD COAST • PANACHE Magazine

Advice should be sought from an experienced family lawyer, not from trusted friends and loved ones who, whilst well intentioned, are not legally trained or experienced in the practice and procedure of Family law. A good family lawyer is one who is armed with both book smarts and street smarts to ensure that decisions are made in line with the law, but also the most practical and sensible solution for your circumstances. In this article we will touch on the very basics of the division of assets after separation including how the Court determines property settlement disputes if you cannot reach an agreement. In Australia after separation there is an entitlement to a “fair” or “just and equitable” division of assets of the relationship. It is the question of what is

ABBI GOLIGHTLY Partner OMB Solicitors Abbi has been named a “Recommended Family Lawyer” and “Leading Parenting Lawyer” from 2016 - 2021 commendation by the independent Doyles Guide.

LEGAL “fair” that causes the most dispute. Sometimes it is fair to not divide the assets at all, meaning that they “lie where they lie” and each party simply keeps what they have in their own name. This is more common in short relationships and where there are no children. However, if a division of assets is necessary, then the following steps are used by lawyers and the Court to determine what is a “fair” division of assets:

WHAT IS THERE TO DIVIDE? First things first we need to identify what there is to divide. Assets can include real estate, bank accounts, cars, superannuation, shares, investments, cash, furniture, jewellery and the like. Liabilities are also considered including mortgages, tax debts, personal loans, credit cards amongst other things. It is the net assets of the parties that are considered for division.

WHAT DID EACH PARTY PUT IN OR CONTRIBUTE TO THE RELATIONSHIP? These contributions are not just monetary contributions. Non-financial contributions toward the care of children and the home are equally as relevant to the division of assets, particularly in longer relationships. Financial contributions are assessed across the entire relationship including any periods post separation.

WHAT ARE THE NEEDS OF EACH OF THE PARTIES LOOKING INTO THE FUTURE? At this stage we look at matters such as the health of each party, their income and earning capacity as well as whether either of the parties have the care of children of the relationship who are under the age of 18. If one party has higher “needs” because of any or all of these factors, then there may be an “adjustment” away from their contributions based entitlement to ensure that they are able to move forward into the future on a level playing field with the higher earning spouse.

OFTEN OVERLOOKED ARE SIMPLE STEPS THAT CAN BE TAKEN TO ENSURE MAXIMUM BENEFIT FROM YOUR LEGAL ADVICE AND TO ENSURE PERSONAL AND ASSET SAFETY. SOME KEY THINGS TO REMEMBER ARE: 1. Ensure that you have appropriate supports in place in relation to managing your emotional health during your separation. Counselling or psychological assistance is nothing to be ashamed of and will ensure you are able to be clear and focused in your decision making through out your legal proceedings. 2. Whilst your lawyer can provide assistance, they are not trained to provide therapeutic support and to be frank, are considerably more expensive than a therapist! 3. Keep a diary or journal of events and discussions. This will help you remember if you are asked by your lawyer about historical events. 4. Keep receipts for any significant purchases and ensure that you transact through your bank accounts rather than cash, in order to prove contributions. 5. Ensure that any physical mail that you may receive is redirected to a safe postal address (get a PO Box if needs be). 6. Consider your accommodation needs – including for the children. If you are concerned about safety, then the Police should be contacted, and steps taken to ensure your safety as a priority. 7. Consider your financial position and establish separate bank accounts, make sure you are aware of your financial obligations, when bills are due, whose name bills and accounts are in and if needs be ensure that you are authorized on these accounts. 8. Ensure your technology is safe by changing passwords and disabling any shared Cloud based storage. 9. Collate copies of important financial records such as tax returns, bank statements, business financial records, trust deeds and superannuation records (including for selfmanaged funds). 10. Consider instructing your bank to insist on “two to sign” on joint accounts with significant balances such as mortgage redraw facilities and overdrafts.

FINALLY, IS THE OUTCOME (A) PRACTICAL AND (B) FAIR AND REASONABLE? This is the last and most important step in property settlement as we need to ensure that the outcome either being ordered or agreed upon is capable of being given effect to and will ensure both parties are able to move on financially. If you can seek advice prior to separation, it is a great idea. When you are armed with knowledge about what information is needed and the processes involved, then you can make informed decisions. These processes are not just legal but practical also. LAUNCH ISSUE • 2021 97

Established in 1972, The BONZ Group proudly manufactures and retails luxury New Zealand made apparel, accessories, homewares and furniture. In the early 1980’s, Bonnie Rodwell (the company’s founder) was standing at a domestic New Zealand airport. It was here that an American tourist commented on her hand knitted jumper, asking where she purchased it as they would like to buy one also. Bonnie had knitted the garment herself and was unaware of anyone selling a similar product in New Zealand at that time. While unable to help that tourist, the question got Bonnie thinking – was there a business here? After research, Bonnie confirmed her assumptions - there was no-one supplying handmade woollen garments on any scale in New Zealand. It was not long after that Bonz, ‘Best of New Zealand’, was born, aimed at providing high quality, sustainably produced, New Zealand designed and made fashion (primarily knitted) to the global market. Now close to 40 years later Bonz has expanded dramatically to have stores in Australia and New Zealand and is recognised as a truly global brand.

ASTROLOGY

The

ASTROLOGICAL PATHWAY IS UNFOLDING The dynamic events of 2020 have now led us into a new chapter on all fronts, including politically, healthwise and the global economic picture. Lessons are unfolding. We are now in a transformative era, like we have never seen before in our lifetimes, or indeed in the history of the modern world. I think most astrologers would agree, we are in the Age of Aquarius which embodies the egalitarian, the equality, the humanitarian, and the freethought characteristics. Now, and it is a BIG now, we are in the mode of choosing our own reality. The dismantling of structures and hierarchies that we have witnessed globally, and in Australia have been oppressive and dictatorial. We can now align ourselves with our own truths and beliefs and creates a wonderful opportunity to free ourselves from past constraints. Already the Aquarian energy has seen a change in our working environments where we have moved from working in the traditional office to home based environments. This has created greater flexibility, and has improved our performance, output, productivity and really is the opportunity for a personal awakening like never before. The significant astrological players for the next couple of years will be Saturn and Uranus. Saturn has to do with structure, order and systems and Uranus wants to bring down the old and bring in the new. The defining aspect of Uranus and Saturn, an event which only occurs every 22 years will see cracks in our

foundations with the inclusions of more technological advancements and breakthroughs. This can also herald a time of real awakening. The challenge is to find the balance of what to keep what supports us and jettison the systems that are no longer personally useful. Most of us will be desirous of change and want to break free from what was felt as one of the most oppressive years in recent history. During the great depression of 1929, we also had similar planetary aspects, so it would be important to look back at history and reflect on how we could do better. Uranus desires progress but needs to tear down old structures first therein lies the conflict with Saturn who is bound by tradition and limitations. Planetary cycles assist us in navigating our lives with hopefully the best outcomes. What is important is to remember that it is up to us individually to create an authentic and meaningful change for our futures. Our astrological transits are actually only signposts which guide us – it is up to us individually to create the best possible outcome for ourselves to navigate the ups and downs of life. As the famous playwright and thinker William Shakespeare once said, “The fault dear Brutus, is not in our stars, but in ourselves that we are underlings”. Ultimately the outcome of our lives is based on our own actions with the guidance of our astrological cycles.

We are honoured to be the exclusive real estate partner, providing content for the discerning Gold Coast market. Each edition we will bring you a summary market update, a showcase of incredible Gold Coast properties on offer – and from time to time outstanding estates from other Queensland lifestyle locations such as Noosa, Whitsundays, and the Tropical North. It’s been an intense 12 months in property with a burgeoning market unseen for a decade or more. Queensland was ranked one of the fastest rising luxury housing markets in the world, despite the COVID-19 pandemic. Here on the Gold Coast the luxury market is bullish, mirroring global trends and trends throughout Australia & New Zealand. Population movement from interstate, intrastate [locals], and Australians returning to Queensland [specifically the Gold Coast] resulted in record breaking results for FY20/21, with the road ahead looking equally strong. With the continuum of low interest rates

and tremendous value for dollar - our property market across the Gold Coast bodes well as we enter the second half of 2021, and our traditionally strong spring/summer season... albeit those lines are a little blurred these days.

REWARDING RELENTLESS PURSUIT OF EXCELLENCE I’d like to take this opportunity to share with our readers that Queensland Sothebys’ International Realty was recently awarded the highest achievement in the prestigious International Property Awards, winning in three categories for Australia: - Best Real Estate Agency - Best Real Estate Marketing - Best Real Estate website An outstanding achievement for our dedicated team and a testament to our clients.

WHEN - 24TH APRIL, 2021 WHERE - CEREMONY AND RECEPTION AT HAMILTON

ISLAND YACHT CLUB ON THE DAY AFTER HELENE’S 50TH BIRTHDAY.

112 GOLD COAST • PANACHE Magazine

WEDDING

FIRST MEETING

– Charles and Helene met at Domani’s Restaurant in Main Beach on Melbourne Cup Day in 2015 on the insistence of their mutual friend, Jenni Purdy, who thought they would be good together.

FIRST IMPRESSIONS – Helene –

“I remember thinking how tall he was and I also liked his cheeky smile and bright blue eyes.” Charles – “I was struck by her big smile and beautiful looks.”

WHAT YOU LOVE MOST ABOUT EACH OTHER – Helene – “We have such fun

together and laugh all the time plus he is very loyal and gives me his unwavering support at all times.” Charles – “Beside the laughs and fun times, I love her family values and great loyalty to her friends and family.”

THE PROPOSAL

– Charles proposed when the couple was in Dubai on the way home from a European trip. On the pretence of looking at jewellery, Charles managed to get Helene into a store where he had secretly organised an engagement ring. He had the ring brought out with other items she was looking at and then when she saw it, he popped the question. Helene had no idea it was going to happen and everyone in the store clapped and applauded when she said ‘Yes’.

THE BRIDE – Helene’s gown was an ivory crepe

and lace gown by Grace Loves Lace in Burleigh Heads with Aquazzura shoes.

THE GROOM

– Charles was dressed in a Hugo Boss navy jacket, long sleeve shirt and MMX light blue chinos, all from John Forsyth for Men.

THE WALTZ – The bridal waltz was the Donna Summer song ‘The Last Dance’.

HONEYMOON – Qualia for 4 fabulous nights of

relaxation. We were planning to take the girls (Hannah and Charlie) to Europe if we eloped but due to COVID-19 we kept it local, this way we could invite all our family and closest friends.

WITNESSES

– Helene’s daughter Hannah and Charles’s daughter Charlie.

MOTORING

When it was first launched in 2016, the first generation F-Pace was a game changer for the famous Jaguar brand. It has been lauded by critics as one of most rewarding and stylish SUVs on the market today and the latest release has not dampened the enthusiasm. With an assertive new exterior, beautifully crafted all-new interior, latest generation Pivi Pro infotainment and the choice of in-line four and six-cylinder engines, the new Jaguar F-PACE is more luxurious, connected and efficient than ever. The new exterior design gives a cleaner, more assured presence, featuring a new sculpted bonnet with a wider power bulge and smoother, more precisely defined surfaces. The new bonnet also contributes to a more striking finish by reducing the number of shut lines on the front of the car. An enlarged grille features Jaguar’s heritage logoinspired ‘diamond’ detailing, while the side fender vents now feature the iconic Leaper emblem, demonstrating the exceptional attention to detail found right across the vehicle. A new front bumper with redesigned air intakes and dark mesh details visually widen the new F-PACE for a more assured dynamic presence.

New super slim all-LED quad headlights with ‘Double J’ Daytime Running Light (DRL) signatures, which are available with optional Pixel LED technology, deliver increased resolution and brightness. With Adaptive Driving Beam capability, which evaluates the road ahead and automatically adapts the high beam light to mask oncoming traffic or traffic signs, the system can create varying light beam patterns by selecting different LED segments to optimise visibility and minimise risk

of distracting other drivers. Premium LED technology is fitted as standard across the range and is available with Auto High Beam Assist on SE and HSE models. Animated Directional Indicators are also available on all models when fitted as part of additional linked options, and provide heightened sophistication. At the rear, new slimline lights feature Jaguar’s double chicane graphic – first previewed on the all-electric I-PACE – to accentuate the width of the vehicle.

In R-Dynamic specification, the new F-PACE features a series of distinct design elements for a more performance focused look, while all models are available with the additional Black Exterior Pack, which delivers an even more dynamic appearance with bespoke elements finished in Gloss Black. It is inside that things get seriously sumptuous. An all-new interior with heightened luxury, enhanced connectivity and greater serenity and refinement for driver and passengers. The new cockpit design is bolder, more dynamic and with greater focus on the driver. A new sporty centre console, faster in profile, sweeps up to the instrument panel and incorporates an optional wireless charger and greater console stowage. At the heart of the new interior is a seamlessly integrated centrallymounted 11.4-inch curved-glass HD touchscreen in an elegant magnesium alloy casing, which controls the new Pivi Pro infotainment system. Authentic finishes, including open pore wood veneers and aluminium, feature in beautifully formed shapes such as the upper door insert and full width ‘Piano lid’ that is formed across the width of 118 GOLD COAST • PANACHE Magazine

the instrument panel. Laser-etched mid-line speaker frets and the metallic rotary dial of the JaguarDrive Control epitomise the attention to detail. The new Drive Selector features an upper section finished with ‘cricketball’ stitching, the lower part being made of precision engineered metal for enhanced tactility. New door casings, featuring a new 360-degree grab handle, provide easier access and increased storage for drinks bottles and other items, while the electric window switches are moved down from the top of the door roll, putting them within easier reach of occupants. New seats feature wider cushioning, new massage functions and enhanced coverage of the heated and cooling areas. An embossed Jaguar Leaper features on the headrests on selected models, while a set of ‘Est.1935 Jaguar Coventry’ upholstery tags highlight the brand’s heritage. A series of advanced technologies ensure the health and wellbeing of all occupants. Cabin Air Ionisation improves interior air quality through NanoeTM technology, which removes allergens and unpleasant odours. The system now also features PM2.5 filtration, which captures

ultra-fine particles – including PM2.5 particulates – to improve occupant health and wellbeing. The customer activates the system simply by pushing the purify button. Advanced MHEV technology, available on the six-cylinder diesel engines and featured on the six-cylinder petrol powertrains, uses a Belt integrated Starter Generator (BiSG) to harvest energy usually lost when slowing and braking. This energy is then stored in a separate 48V lithium-ion battery before being intelligently redeployed to assist the engine when accelerating away, as well as delivering a more refined stop/ start system. The new F-PACE features Jaguar’s advanced Electronic Vehicle Architecture, dubbed EVA 2.0, which supports a range of new technologies to ensure the future ready vehicle is always connected and always up to date. The latest Pivi Pro infotainment technology is accessed through the all-new 11.4-inch curved glass HD touchscreen. Key benefits include enhanced clarity, the screen is three times brighter and 48 percent larger than the previous 10-inch screen, and the simplified menu structures allow drivers to access or view up to

MOTORING

90 percent of common tasks from the home screen in two taps or less. It also features a new 12.3-inch HD Interactive Driver Display with enhanced graphics and a configurable layout which can show full-screen navigation mapping with turn-by-turn instructions, digital dials, media, contact list or infotainment details. Working in conjunction with the optional Heads Up Display technology, new F-PACE gives drivers all the information they need with the least distraction. The intuitive new infotainment system features Apple CarPlay® as standard and allows customers to connect two phones simultaneously via Bluetooth. Android Auto™ and Baidu CarLife are also available as standard depending on market applicability. Optional wireless device charging with phone signal booster allows occupants to fast charge their smartphone. The system also provides clearer calls through the help of an external aerial. To enable instantaneous start-up, Pivi Pro has a dedicated power source, so is ready to use as soon as customers get behind the wheel. The collection of new convenience technologies includes Software-Over The-Air (SOTA) capability, which ensures the performance SUV is always using the latest software. The technology means that owners don’t have to visit retailers to receive software updates for the vehicle. Pivi Pro connectivity is provided by the latest embedded dual-sim technology with two LTE

modems enabling the system to carry out multiple functions at the same time, such as streaming media and downloading SOTA updates, without compromising performance. The cutting-edge connectivity also ensures minimal interruptions caused by coverage blackspots as it roams across network providers for the strongest signal. Segment-first Active Road Noise Cancellation technology constantly monitors vibrations from the road surface and calculates the opposite phase sound wave needed to remove the noise heard by the occupants. This means quieter levels within the cabin and improved refinement that helps to reduce fatigue, commonly associated with prolonged exposure to low frequency noise. Cabin occupancy is monitored, with the system continuously optimising performance to deliver the best possible experience for everyone. The lightweight technology ensures that vehicle weight and handling characteristics remain unaffected. Engine Noise Cancellation isolates the cabin from unwanted engine noise to further enhance the sense of tranquillity. For enhanced convenience, the second generation wearable Activity Key can be used to lock, unlock and start the vehicle without the need for the conventional key fob to be present in the vehicle. The rechargeable device incorporates a watch and has a battery life of up to seven days between charges. The new F-PACE

also benefits from a selection of advanced driver assistance technology. This includes Clear Exit Monitor, which alerts both front and rear occupants to the presence of an approaching car or cyclist when exiting the vehicle. Adaptive Cruise Control automatically maintains a set distance from the vehicle in front. Jaguar’s latest 3D Surround Camera technology delivers advanced 3D functionality using the latest camera technology to deliver more detail and a choice of realtime viewing when manoeuvring the vehicle. The selection of settings include Junction View, 3D Perspective View, and ClearSight Plan View. Jaguar’s commitment to creating strong and lightweight vehicles continues to forge ahead. The aluminium-intensive architecture uses recycled aluminium from closed loop manufacturing for greater sustainability and is an important contribution towards Jaguar’s journey to Destination Zero, a world of zero emissions, zero accidents and zero congestion. Customers can choose from S, SE and HSE specification packs, all are available in R-Dynamic specification. Also optional on all models is the Black Exterior Pack. In summary this is an exceptional vehicle. The F-Pace is perfect addition to the rapidly growing SUV market and with its canny balance of luxurious interior and smooth as silk ride, it is an impeccable choice for Australian conditions.

BELL ***************************

ARE YOU A BORN AND BRED GOLD COASTER? Yes. I spent the first 21 years of my life living in the same family home in Sorrento. WHAT SCHOOL DID YOU GO TO? All Saints Anglican School. WHERE DO YOU WORK? I recently started as the Group Marketing Manager for Prestige Cars Group - Gold Coast Jaguar Land Rover, Porsche Centre Gold Coast and Gold Coast Car Clearance.. HOW LONG HAVE YOU BEEN IN THIS POSITION AND WHAT’S THE BEST THING YOU HAVE DONE TO PROMOTE THE BRAND SO FAR? My highlight so far has been our Sportscar Together Day event at Porsche Centre Gold Coast, which was held on Saturday 5th June. I’m currently working on our marketing strategy to further showcase our team through our digital marketing. There is something special about working at Prestige Cars Group, and the people here are a big part of that. From the great leadership of Damien and Amanda Holley, to the passion and care that all of our sales and service team have for our customers. WHAT BRAND OF CAR DO YOU LIKE THE MOST? That’s like picking your favourite child! But if I had to choose, I would say my favourite car is the new Porsche Taycan Turbo S. Not only are electric vehicles the way of the future, but Porsche has done a superb job creating the first ever electric sports car. DID YOU EVER THINK THAT YOU WOULD BE DOING WHAT YOU ARE NOW? I’ve always had a passion for marketing, and have always aspired to work for a luxury brand. I never imagined though, that I would be fortunate enough to market some of the most luxurious car brands on the Gold Coast. I count myself very lucky to be able to work with such incredible brands, while enjoying the amazing Gold Coast lifestyle. 130 GOLD COAST • PANACHE Magazine

THE PEOPLE IMPORTANT TO YOU ARE? My friends and family. THE KEY TO HAPPINESS? Self-love and self-responsibility. When you take responsibility for yourself, you become the most powerful. We are all responsible for our reactions, moods and thoughts, and when you have self-responsibility you realise that whatever happens in your life, you have the power to make changes to get a different outcome. PEOPLE WHO KNOW YOU, KNOW THAT I LOVE….? My cat Cosmo who is a Ragdoll/Himalayan cross. She’s a big girl with a big personality. THE BEST ADVICE YOU EVER RECEIVED? Fly with the eagles, or swim with the ducks. The people you surround yourself with will affect the way you think, act and grow. If you want to be successful, surround yourself with other passionate and successful people. THOUGHTS ON SOCIAL MEDIA? Social Media plays a crucial role in connecting people and developing relationships. Gone are the days of posting pretty pictures, social media is so much more than that. It not only allows businesses to sell products, connect with customers, and grow relationships, but it also allows everyday users a voice, a way to access information and communicate with our friends and family. THE MEANING OF LIFE IS… To find your purpose/passion and live in the present. Do what you’re passionate about and make the most of everyday! WHAT DO YOU LOVE ABOUT LIVING AND WORKING ON THE GOLD COAST? What’s not to love about living on the Gold Coast? I am a true advocate for the Gold Coast, I believe it’s the best place to work, live and study. You’ve got the beach to the east, the hinterland to the west, Brisbane City to the north and Byron Bay to the south, all within an hour or so drive. Not to mention we have about 300 days of sunshine per year, allowing us to make the most of our weekends.
