Dec 2013

Editor's Note Hello again ladies. I cannot believe 2013 is almost over. It has been an eventful year with Christmas just around the corner. The weather has cooled down a lot and playing golf is much more comfortable this time of year. So, what have we got installed for you this issue. We had a chat with a rising young star in the world of ladies golf, Shi Yu Ting, a promising 15 year old golfer from China with an incredible insight into golf at such a young age and Mission Hills invited Fore Girls to The Match between Tiger Woods and Rory McIllroy. I know this event is not strictly about ladies golf but it was a tournament that just had to be covered live by Fore Girls. Read all about what happened at the event from our Editors. They certainly had an interesting, eye opening and amusing time covering the event. Thank you for your continued support so far. On behalf of myself and the Fore Girls team, we would like to wish all our readers a very Merry Christmas and a Healthy and Prosperous 2014.

Sea, Sand AND Sun ... Not All on the Beach! ainan Island is fast emerging as a popular tourist destination with its tropical climate and pristine sandy beaches overlooking the South China Sea. Arriving at Sanya Airport located in the southernmost city on Hainan, less than an hour and a half’s drive from the city you will discover an oasis of tranquillity. The journey from Sanya city, boasting a population of under 700,000 people, you pass tropical coconut palm trees and quaint little village houses along the motorway with open fields and mountains making a very picturesque background. What is immediately apparent is that you do not feel like you are in China. Finally, after a pleasant drive, on arrival at The Dunes Golf Club, you are presented with a breathtaking view of a coastline you would only expect to see in Thailand or other exotic Asian resorts. For the demanding tourist, this destination not only caters for the consummate golfer but also for those who simply want to chill out, de-stress and do nothing more than lounging in the sun enjoying the beach or pool. It is difficult to talk about the golf course without mentioning the hotels, The Sheraton Shenzhou Peninsula Resort and Four Points by Sheratons Shenzhou Peninsula which together form a complete synergised complex catering to everyone not just avid golfers but also families.

So Much Sand The Dunes has two standard 18-holes par 72 golf courses simply called East and West. Designed by the legendary designer Tom Weiskopf who has transformed natural sandy beaches, coastline and feral land into a selection of incredible fairways and greens. As you would expect the golf club certainly lives up to its name “The Dunes”. There is an abundance of bunkers at every hole to test the very best golfers. Everywhere you look is sand and bunkers, this is no exaggeration! The East course is the more picturesque with hazards and rough areas in abundance and a lot of trees, as well as plenty of hazardous bunkers. The fairways and landing areas are relatively small, so without stating the obvious, as long as you can hit straight, it could be testing but not too difficult for the average golfer. The West course is not as picturesque as the East, plays like a links course but still has equally impressive views. The West course is played along the coastline

fronting the South China Sea where you can marvel at the sea views in between holes and feel the sea breeze making for a very comfortable round of golf. As you play through the course you will pass the magnificent rooms of the Sheraton Resort. As a guest of the resort you can sit on the balcony if you are overlooking the golf course and watch golfers try to par the holes with varying degrees of success. By the way, if the fairways are dry, the club will allow players to drive their golf carts on the fairways otherwise you must stay on the cart paths. Personally, I believe in walking a course to really enjoy the golf experience and impressive landscape in all its glory. That said, the golf carts were a joy to drive reminding me of the child that still exists within me.

A 23rd Century Academy In addition to the two championship courses, The Dunes also offers a 5-hole practice course designed specifically for training and coaching beginner golfers,

providing actual course experience before they graduate to the full 18-hole course. Resident Director of Instruction Stewart Kemp, a qualified Scottish PGA professional, was on hand to provide an insight into the Golf Training Academy. Stewart has visited many golf clubs in China but felt none had the qualities and facilities of The Dunes. In addition to the standard driving range and putting greens where you can practice your technique and swing, Stewart emphasised the importance of course experience. It is on a golf course that golfers really learn to play golf. The 5-hole practice course has been designed to give beginners a real feel and experience of playing all the different strokes you would normally play. On this custom course it is less daunting for a beginner who may feel uneasy on an 18hole course initially. The Golf Training Academy is fully supported by Taylormade providing the academy with a state-of-the-art 3D motion capture room that analyses an individual’s swing enabling a tailored set of golf clubs

to be fitted to their exact specifications. The technology as demonstrated by Stewart was quite an eye-opener providing you with full analysis of your swing speed, angle, path etc… with 360 degree views of your swing. Stewart stressed the importance of tailored clubs as every individual is different so it is best to have the clubs fit the person rather than the person fit the clubs which unfortunately is what happens when you purchase off the rack. With a gymnasium soon to be built allowing you to work on your fitness as well, Stewart really feels that the academy has all the necessary tools in place to develop would-be golfers and simply needs people to visit and see the academy for themselves. This is by far the greatest challenge rather than lack of facilities and on a personal level, Stewart explained that the language barrier can be a small hindrance in particular when explaining golfing terminology but did add that it is only a minor issue. The great atmosphere and incredible training facilities at the academy together with the championship courses are what sets The Dunes apart from other courses and Stewart hopes once people understand and see this first hand, they will come and experience all that The Dunes can offer.

The Salt of the Earth Current General Manager Jimmy Luk describes the uniqueness of this course with the surrounding beaches and sea providing magnificent views with its natural rock formations shaped over hundreds of years and incredibly clean and clear waters. Also, the greens and fairways use Platinum TE Paspalum turf grass which thrives around a salt water environment, is exceptionally tolerant to shade and disease and recovers well from injury making the course very self-sustaining requiring less maintenance. Given its proximity to the sea, an ideal choice of grass. The panoramic views are really what sets the golf club apart from others and with such beautiful surroundings it is a shame that the golf club is not more popular. This is one of the main challenges at the moment for Jimmy. He explained

that Hainan is still very much a new tourist destination and requires a little more promotion but there are development plans for new hotels nearby and a yacht club so this should help to market the area and in turn bring more people to the club. The Dunes with The Sheraton and Four Points are certainly actively promoting the resort and hope to attract many more tourists from around the world. At the moment the majority of their clientele tend to be from Mainland China and Hong Kong as well as Malaysia and Singapore who have a large ex-Hainan community. In terms of attracting more female visitors, Jimmy indicated that the objective was to attract everyone rather than differentiate but for lady golfers looking for the whole experience, the golf courses are not too long and are very comfortable to play on and the hotel facilities offer all the pampering they could wish for after golf with wonderful spas, beaches, excellent seafood etc… Jimmy was delighted to have been offered the opportunity by CITIC Pacific Limited to manage The Dunes when first approached in 2007. He was General Manager at the Discovery Bay Golf Club in Hong Kong for many years and was offered a chance and felt it was time for a change

and an opportunity to take his vast years of experience and apply it elsewhere. He hopes to develop The Dunes into a premier golf destination and leave behind a place that people will return to again and again and hopes to achieve this before he retires. As a guest of The Sheraton and Four Points hotels, there is a regular transport service to and from The Dunes golf course so after a day playing golf, you have your own personal buggy to take you back to the hotels where you can then indulge in the spa facilities on offer, go for a swim in the pool or sea or simply head back to your room for some quiet time.

A One Stop Shop We also had the pleasure of interviewing Douglas Brennan, the General Manager of The Sheraton & Four Points Shenzhou Peninsula Resort to gather his views on the resort complex. The whole resort and why it is special as Douglas explained is that it is an integrated resort where upon arrival, everything you need is in one place. There is no need to travel elsewhere. With 308 rooms at The Sheraton and another 338 rooms at Four Points, it can cater for all levels of guests and the nearby golf course with the Dec 2013

fifth fairway running alongside the hotel provides you with a great view from your room. The spa and dining facilities are world class with professional masseuses and chefs. The beach fronting this bay is approximately 5.5 kilometres long and the warm breeze from the South China Sea make this a perfect place to relax and is easily accessible from Hong Kong. With The Dunes Golf Club just a short distance away, you can practice your game in a relaxed environment due to its different courses suitable for all levels. The challenge the resort faces at the moment is that it is a new resort opened only 2 years ago so the drive has been to market and promote the place as a new destination and certainly in the next 5 years, Douglas feels it will become more well known. The Dunes and the resort complex have been winning

awards for its excellence and no doubt will continue to do so in the future. For women, the spa and beauty salons are equal to any in the world. Located conveniently between The Sheraton and Four Points in a standalone location with transport to and from the hotels, you can experience 12 treatment rooms, open air loungers and Jacuzzis. The warm weather and décor is reminiscent of what you would expect in a Thailand resort except it is on the doorstep of Hong Kong and China. For Douglas who has been in China for 12 years, he has had a great deal of experience working in the hospitality industry having worked in Macau at the Westin Resort and then opening 3 other Sheraton hotels in Asia. He had the pleasure of working in Hainan some years ago and when the opportunity

arose once again, he seized the chance. As Douglas explained, “The temperature on the island is beautiful all year round with the breeze from the South China Sea providing comfortable conditions, the air quality is incredibly clean and refreshing and the environment is so relaxed that you will have a fantastic experience at this fully integrated and open resort. As for lifestyle, this is a great place to be”. Travelling to Hainan for the first time, the travelling time door to door from Hong Kong was just over 4 hours, much less time than going elsewhere in South East Asia. The cost for a 3 day stay plus flight was not high, comparable currently with a weekend in Macau. Having experienced the resort and golf first hand myself, I would have to ask this question, why did I not know about this place sooner?

Dunes

(Douglas

Dec 2013

A Promising Young Star In recent years, Chinese golfers have attracted a great deal of attention on the world stage. To further promote China golf internationally, the national team has been putting a lot of effort into the training of talented teenage golfers.

COVER STORY

ifteen year old Shi Yu Ting is a member of the China Golf National Team. She started playing golf at seven and half years old. Her parents discovered that she had a talent for golf and subsequently employed a coach to train her. She took part in and won third place in her age group in the Zhang Lianwei Cup, the first international junior golf invitational. In 2007, she attended a training academy in Huangshan as her father wanted her to receive a better education. After which, she headed back to Shanghai to continue her studies. Shi Yu Ting is currently studying in school and spends her time on the golf course after school and during weekends. Sometimes, she has to ask for time off from school for competitions. However, she will take her textbooks and selfstudy during these competitions. Although golf takes up most of her time, Yu Ting is disciplined enough to still perform well in school. In the last few years, Yu Ting has achieved many accolades in golf and her aim is to be a professional golfer and represent China in international golf events. Fore Girls had the pleasure of meeting Shi Yu Ting recently to gather her views and thoughts about her career so far. Q : How did you first become interested in golf? A : My father likes playing golf and always plays with friends and colleagues. When I was seven years old, I went to the driving range with my father during the summer holidays. At the beginning, I was just playing for fun, then, later as I became more interested in this sport, my father employed a coach and we practiced together at the same driving range. I started to participate in some junior events where my parents discovered that I had a talent for golf and so golf became my future career path. Q : What would you say is the most difficult aspect of playing golf? A : Everyone comes across difficulties and the most important part is how you overcome it. I believe real golf-lovers will not be easily discouraged by little setbacks. They will tackle the problems optimistically. Every time I have problems, the national team, my coach and parents will help me find the solutions. I think I am playing well right now. Q : What motivates you to play golf i.e. why do you enjoy playing golf; what does it give you that other things cannot? A : I think it’s a game where I get to meet a lot of friends who are also playing the game. Sometimes, we join the same competitions and watch each other growing up which means a lot to me as we can learn from each other and develop our friendship at the same time. Also, I think the power of role models is also important. More and more high profile international events are coming to China and China is gaining higher recognition in the world. It’s enjoyable to watch the changes in China’s world ranking while playing. Q : What advice would you give to young players coming into the game? A : Nowadays, there are many golfers younger than me who are playing in amateur or junior events because we are in the same training team. We will share our experiences and encourage each other.

Q : Where do you see China golf in the future for both the boys and girls game? A : I think China’s golf development will continue to grow in the future. China has state-of-art technology for training young golfers today. Many Chinese golfers are competing at international levels and have achieved remarkable results. It’s really encouraging for the development of China golf and seniors always share their experiences with us. Nowadays, teenagers and professional athletes doing sports in China are receiving more support from the people. Therefore, I think China golf will develop really well in the future. Many other teenagers in my generation are also talented golfers and we may soon become professional golfers and step onto the world stage within the next five years. I think we will do better when we are older and more mature. Q : Who do you admire the most in golf and why? A : I admire a lot of golfers. It’s hard to say who I admire the most. (Why do you admire them?) I think playing golf is not only about technique. You are not guaranteed to be the best player even if you spend a lot of time training compared to others. You have to use your mind and think of the best strategies. Golfers who are competing at an international level are more or less at the same level, the only thing that separates them is their mindset. In my view, a golfer with a good mindset can achieve better results. Q : What has been your proudest moment in golf so far? A : I think the proudest moment is when I joined the national team wearing the team shirt. I am proud of being a part of the national team representing China and playing in international competitions. I am proud of myself for being able to represent my country. Q : What would you like to achieve as a golf player? A : My wish is to represent China in the Olympic Games in the future. The qualifying players are those who have outstanding skills and remarkable results in the world ranking. So, I think I will have achieved most of my goals when I am on the Olympic stage. I know it takes time to achieve success. I am now working on this step by step. I would say competing at the Olympic games is my biggest ambition at the moment. Q : Are you planning to participate in any future competitions? A : Maybe my focus could be to participate in the China Ladies Open in the future. There are quite a lot of important events coming up next year like the Youth Olympic Games and Asian Games which I am preparing for right now. Fore Girls wishes Shi Yu Ting all the best and will keep a watchful eye on her career.

Why do golf balls have dimples?

Without going into technological detail, essentially, the dimples on a golf ball helps to make the ball travel further in the air by inducing turbulence in the air next to the ball. This design materialised after it was realised that old balls with scratches and wear and tear would travel further than new smooth balls.

What is the difference between links courses and other courses? Links course

Links courses are generally located in areas of coastal sand dunes and sometimes open parkland. They tend to be windier than your normal course and have very few if any trees. In addition, they are generally categorised by few water hazards, uneven fairways and thick rough.

I was recently playing golf and hit the ball into a bunker. After hitting the ball out, I followed etiquette and raked the bunker. It then dawned on me, where does the rake actually go. I simply put it back where I found it, just on the edge of the bunker. Is this the correct place?

Actually, there is no right or wrong answer here as there are no specific rules governing where a rake should be placed. Generally you will find rakes outside of the bunker near the edge.

If I break a club during play can I replace the broken club?

This depends on how the club was broken. If you break the club in a fit of anger, hitting it against a tree or slamming it to the ground then no. However, if it breaks during the normal course of play then yes.

How long do I look for a ball until it is deemed lost?

The ruling is that if you cannot find your ball in five minutes then it is deemed lost and you incur a one shot penalty and must play your next shot from its original spot.

Dec 2013

A Captain of Golf Current Discovery Bay Ladies Golf Captain Wendy Cho is a former businesswoman now turned consultant who has become very active in the golf arena spending her predominant time on her great passion. Fore Girls had the pleasure of meeting with Wendy at the Craigengower Cricket Club where she was able to share her experiences and insight into the development of ladies golf in Hong Kong, China and Asia.

endy Cho spent her early years living and studying in Hong Kong. At the age of 16 she moved to Canada for 6 months to study at Alma College in St Thomas, near London Ontario, Canada, then to a boarding school in Hightstown, New Jersey, U.S. Through her high school years, Wendy was always very active in racket sports, like table tennis, tennis, badminton and squash. She was also a member of the school softball team. After high school, Wendy secured an undergraduate place at the famous New York University studying Economics and East Asian Studies. After graduating, Wendy would return to Hong Kong to make her mark in the business world.

The Parallels of Golf and Life Wendy started a furniture company and as the business grew, she eventually listed the company in 2003 and 4 years later sold the company. Since then, Wendy has been in a consultancy role which has allowed her more time to pursue her love of golf. She started playing golf in 1998 becoming interested in this particular sport because she felt it was a great method to train both her physical and mental strength and appreciated the parallels between golf and life. As with life, golf has more depth than other sports and in many ways provides a metaphor when dealing with life’s challenges. She would use golf as an example for her staff to understand that through focus and calmness, two important aspects to your game, you could achieve better results in business and life. As with most beginners, a coach is all important and Wendy stressed the importance of having a coach who can

identify problems in your game. The coach helped her to co-ordinate her upper and lower body to avoid back injuries and she did suffer from hand injuries some time ago resulting in difficulty with her grip. Naturally, one’s game will always have moments where your swing is not as you would like but as Wendy explained “As long as you can move the ball forward, that is what counts even if the ball rolls along the fairway. It is still possible to achieve a par or a bogey”. In terms of the most difficult aspect of golf, rather than technique, it was confidence and commitment to the swing that Wendy citied as the factor defining difficulty. As mentioned before, the depth of the game, the emotional focus and confidence required to truly excel in golf was paramount. Every time you play, the experience is different and all one needs is that unforgettable shot or hole to motivate you to keep coming back for more. These are all aspects that also present themselves as you take that journey through life. Naturally, the scenery and weather when playing does its part as well. Her advice to young players coming into the game is to train their patience and focus, use tactics and play smart and above all, practice. Wendy’s involvement with Discovery Bay Golf Club emerged because of her passion for golf and the fact that she had more free time than her fellow golfers so was in an ideal position to take over as Ladies Captain. In addition to the usual tasks required of a Ladies Captain such as organising weekly competitions, interclub competitions and attending committee meetings at the HKGA, Wendy also runs educational seminars on golf rules and etiquette. Her challenge in the role has been to gain a better understanding of her

members’ needs and expectations so as to manage the different requirements of her members effectively. She hopes to set a good platform for all to enjoy golf in a relaxed and fun atmosphere.

The Challenges of Golf Wendy’s view on golf in Hong Kong echoes that of many in that there has been a slowdown in golf compared to 10 years ago. The premium on space has led to less and less places available to play golf, the cost of playing is also high compared to Western countries and there is little support from the government. Golf in Hong Kong is perceived as an elitist sport whereas in the U.S. it is more casual, meaning accessibility is much greater although casual does not mean you can dispense with etiquette. In terms of the growth of the game in Asia, Wendy does feel that the LPGA can develop further in this region and indeed Asia needs the support of the LPGA. Sponsorship is a major concern for the ladies game, those on the tour or trying to compete on the tour are most in need of long term sponsorship if they are to have a chance of turning golf into a career. Even those who choose professional coaching rather than compete professionally, there simply are not enough places in Hong Kong to teach, most are having to travel to China. So it would seem that the demand for golf is in Asia but obstacles exist that prevent the sport from flourishing in Hong Kong. Challenge is the one word that Wendy would use to describe golf but in a positive context since without a challenge, one cannot excel or improve. She did think about the word frustration but felt it was a little negative. As a golfer myself, these two words certainly hold true. Dec 2013

Chip off the Old block 切擊球 Usually, we are referring to 30-40 yard chipping.

Address: Turn your front shoulder to a 9 o’clock position and do cocking (i.e. turn 90 ° adjusting your cocking depending on the distance). Transfer the power to your hip at the point of impact turning the shoulder downwards. Follow through after impact and form a triangle with hands and shoulder. The range of chipping depends on the distance.

30

Dec 2013

TIPS & TECHNIQUES

For example: To hit a 30-yard chip, the arc of the swing can only reach a 9 o’clock position or you maintain cocking at 9 o’clock position. The longer the distance, the larger the arc of swing.

The picture displays a 20-yard green-side chip. Turn the shoulder to an 8 o’clock position. Then, turn the shoulder downwards at the point of impact. Follow through after impact keeping your left hand and the club in a straight line. The power tends to be on the left side. Maintain a triangle with hands and shoulder after following through. Send the ball forward in a straight line. There are three types of chipping: 1. Low shot Allow the ball to roll reaching the hole where the ball should spend a third of the distance in the air and two-thirds rolling towards the hole. 2. Middle shot Chip the ball to a landing point and allow it to roll towards the hole where the ball should spend half the distance in the air and then roll towards the hole. 3. High shot Allow the ball to roll reaching the hole where the ball should spend a two-thirds of the distance in the air and a third rolling towards the hole.

Mi Casa Su Casa Having a drink after work is a common routine for many people. However, bars in Hong Kong are so crowded. When you find somewhere nice and quiet, it can be pricey. Recently, I’ve discovered a new bar in Sai Kung selling a variety of alcoholic beverages. More importantly, the price is reasonable, an ideal place for happy hour drinks.

asa is the Spanish word for “home”. When I first heard of the name, I thought of home furnishing stores and home restaurants. In fact, Casa is the name of a traditional western-style tapas bar in Sai Kung where you can grab some drinks and tapas. James, a Brit and one of the owners of the bar encourages an eco-friendly and natural lifestyle. The bar is simple and neat. The image of a house on the shop sign allows people around the world to know the name of the bar regardless of language. The bar is selective about the drinks they sell but do sell a variety of alcoholic beverages such as lager, wine and I.P.A. (an ale). James has been living in Hong Kong for eight years. In Hong Kong, usually, bars are either overpriced or lack in choice when it comes to drinks. He wanted to introduce the real western concept to Hong Kong and therefore opened a bar offering reasonably priced drinks with a comfortable drinking atmosphere. Unlike many other bars, Casa sells handcrafted beer rather than the top brands. Not everybody drinks to get drunk, some people drink for the enjoyment and therefore Casa is the right place. Everything is simple here. There are only a few wooden tables and benches, as

well as an open kitchen. You can clearly see the ingredients, cooking processes and hygiene in the kitchen. Moreover, it is a truly eco-friendly bar. The French doors let in adequate amounts of sunlight and the air is used as a natural thermostat. You feel comfortable sitting inside during the hot summer even without the airconditioning. The menu is written on huge blackboards on the walls to reduce the usage of paper. When they need to modify the menu, they simply erase the words and rewrite it on the boards. The reusable ceramic coasters can be used again and again. Technology can also play a role in environmental protection. Casa uses smart phones and tablets to control light effects and music by changing bulb colours and songs to create a distinctive atmosphere. They also use it for ordering. When customers order food or drinks, the orders are sent to the screen in kitchen directly from the devices. The measures in place improve the efficiency of work and put an eco-friendly concept into effect at the same time. Tapas are similar to Izakaya, meaning food for drinking. The food served here is simple but not boring. They provide diverse styles of dishes from English,

Spanish, Italian to Japanese tapas to match the different alcoholic drinks. They use natural good quality ingredients like cheeses from around the world, French mussels and Japanese scallops to make healthy and light tapas. Stuffed Chili Peppers with Feta Cheese is one of the recommendations of the bar. It looks like stuffed cherry tomatoes and tastes sweet at the first followed by a spicy zing. James also recommends meatballs, mussels, as well as bacon and figs. These are all worth trying. If you are a teetotaler and bored with orange juice and soft drinks, you could try Sparkling Juice instead. It is imported from Spain and made of 100% fresh juice. The cost of soft drinks is definitely lower and selling soft drinks at $30 is more profitable. However, James simply wants customers to have really good quality drinks at reasonable prices. Customers are always their top priority here. Casa is a café in the morning and a bar at night. It opens as early as 8am serving customers coffee and breakfast. There are sockets underneath the tables around the kitchen bar for your modern convenience. You can prepare for work while enjoying breakfast and charge your batteries for the day ahead. Dec 2013

ith its simple fittings and décor set in a typical village environment, it is one of Hong Kong’s best kept secrets. Sitting in the outdoor garden area you have views of mountains and trees with the gentle sounds of birds and running water in the background. It is in the evening after sunset that you truly appreciate the beauty of this eatery. The ambience is a perfect location for a romantic meal with that special someone. The seclusion and quietness of this place becomes very apparent as you sit and enjoy the surroundings before the food arrives. In an extended patio adjacent to the garden sits a grand piano, the centre piece of the restaurant representing the owner’s love for this form of music. With the harmonic tones of the piano playing in the background echoing through the restaurant, you truly experience a sense of peace and traquillity that is difficult to find in Hong Kong. Whilst the ambience of a place adds to the eating experience, as a diner, the food will always be the main ingredient that will be the deciding factor on whether you will come again. Despite its very Chinese rural location, the menu boasts a very Western style cuisine more typical of what you might find at restaurants in the Central district of Hong Kong. The cost is actually quite reasonable particularly when considering the quality of the dishes available. The portion sizes do not disappoint hence it is advisable to share the dishes unless of course, you have a large stomach. Please heed these words, “your eyes may be bigger than your stomach”, you have been warned! Fore Girls were treated to a selection of their signature dishes showcasing the broad choices available. It has to be said, for non-vegetarians, the Lotus Courtyard certainly caters for their appetite.

The Beauty of

The Giorgetti name has been synonymous with fine Italian furniture design and manufacture for over 100 years. Started by Luigi Giorgetti in 1898 in Meda, a small city located in the Brianza province of Italy, the company has developed a reputation for its exquisite use of wood to create modern and contemporary furniture with an artistic and traditional quality. The company has expanded internationally with its brand reaching many countries across the world. While the company has grown significantly it is still managed today with a Giorgetti at its helm. “It is very difficult to say one Unique Selling Point because we have a lot of characteristics that help us to stand out from the crowd. If we have to mention the most important, it is the sophisticated cabinet making. The common fil rouge to all Giorgetti collections is wood which, over the years, has been worked and fashioned, initially into a classical piece of furniture, and then evolving into a product which satisfies the requirements of contemporary living, while at the same time keeping the cabinet making tradition alive. In addition to this we have to mention the exclusive design, manufactured in Italy production and the long lasting quality materials.”

An Offer You Can’t Refuse oberta Giorgetti is the fourth generation of the Giorgetti family to manage the family business and is poised to take the company into the next chapter of its legacy. Roberta was raised very much in the family business and as she describes “wood is in my blood”. She learnt from an early age the beauty of wood and the process of turning the raw material into works of art from her father. Having knowledge of the full life cycle of this process is a must in order to understand the Giorgetti product. She did not enter the family business at first but branched out into other business areas. Roberta worked with her husband for over 20 years in the beauty cosmetic industry before receiving a phone call from her father Carlo, who persuaded her to return to the family business. As a devoted daughter, when her father asked for help, how could she refuse? As General Manager and a member of the board, Roberta is driving the business

forward particularly in Asia where she is strengthening the Giorgetti brand of excellence. She has been busy meeting new designers who share the same vision and philosophy as the company and has worked with some of the most renowned designers including Carlo Colombo, Massimo Scolari, Laura Silverstini and Chinese French designer MVW.

Living with the Family Name Recently in Hong Kong to launch the 2013 New Collection, Roberta was available to share her thoughts about herself, the company and the future of Giorgetti. Her motivation comes from a need to strive for perfection and a pride in achieving the best results possible. Roberta explained that life is a constant learning curve and one must continually learn to improve. You must also be intelligent enough to understand your own limitations and surround yourself with very good staff. Her

father has been by far her most significant teacher in all aspects of her life, not just business and even today, she still learns a great deal from her father. In terms of balancing her work and life, it is not easy given her hectic schedule and travelling but Roberta does make time particularly at weekends to spend more time at home with the family in Milan where she now resides. Roberta jokingly said that even her daughter has to arrange an appointment to see her. Despite coming from a family with such a prestigious and long history, Roberta does not feel there is any pressure to live up to the family name. She likes to live a simple life and although the name is famous, Roberta still enjoys a great deal of anonymity.

The Future of the Business As General Manager, Roberta cites the selection of designers and the collections as the most difficult aspect of management. The most important factor is to understand

the designer and ensure they understand the vision and philosophy of the company. The collection is critical towards their success in the future and getting it right cannot be emphasised enough. Also critical is maintaining the position of the company in the market. It is so important to understand the dealers and working with the right dealers who you not only trust but also share the same focus and ideas. Only then can you ensure a strong and continuing presence in the market. “Giorgetti collections are the result of an extraordinary blend of tradition and modernity. The Giorgetti style is timeless and not subject to changes of seasonable taste: our pieces achieve the best placing in every contest. Giorgetti is well known mostly for its experience in wood carving and respect for the tradition of cabinet making: our strength comes from attention and care for every detail. Our production is intended for those who want objects that have substance, something different and not easily copied.”

Certainly, challenges exist for Roberta and the company but she feels that Giorgetti is in a unique position with their expertise and experience of using wood that no other company can compare to. However, it is important to change with the times whilst maintaining the traditions of the past. “We believe Giorgetti has the characteristics to expand more and more all around the world. Despite the global crisis, the forecasts for this year are good. Even in a period of crisis, an entrepreneur has to be an entrepreneur. Crisis is something that should drive you to find new and different solutions. It requires you to make self-examinations to understand whether what you did is valid or not and to find new paths, new strategies; it does not mean for you to remain firm and wait without doing anything. An entrepreneur should be able to anticipate trends and that’s why travelling is important: if you travel with open eyes, you will see the signs that indicate something is changing and when you understand that

something is changing, you are lead to deep thoughts.”

What does the future hold for Giorgetti? “Internationalization is an integral part of the strategy of the company: the objective is to increase the presence of the brand Giorgetti in foreign markets through a selected sales network of local dealers. This new opening in Hong Kong at ViA is part of the important strategy, highlighting the willingness to increase the visibility of Giorgetti in this area, with the aim to develop and strengthen the Giorgetti brand in the Asian market.” With more than 100 years of history it is evident that the traditions of the old country are still very much alive and no doubt Roberta shall continue to maintain the vision and philosophy of the Giorgetti name and take the company forward for another 100 years.

Dec 2013

Blocking Out The Sun 隔絕陽光侵害 wenty years ago when the concept of sunscreen was introduced, many thought of it as a marketing hype. With time and general broadening knowledge, uv isolation has become very much a part of everyday life. Most TV and radio stations in developed countries list UV index for the day as an important piece of information, reminding parents to take measures against sunburn for their children, as a means to guard against the possibility of skin-related pathological changes. There are many with an outdoor lifestyle or an outdoor work environment. Yet, the use of UV isolation products seems to be restricted to ladies only. Men would consider it too much bother, and unless faced with the prospect of prolonged exposure to the sun (swimming,

mountaineering, golf), would not consider putting on sunscreen. Even when engaged in these outdoor activities, when it is cloudy, most people tend to neglect UV protection. In fact, a tan is considered chic. Be that as it may, when exposed to strong sunlight for more than 150 minutes, when skin turns red and feels irritated, sunburn has reared its ugly head. This is not to be taken lightly—serious sunburn is no less harmful than an injury by fire. So what should we look for when choosing a sunscreen? First of all, it must offer protection against UVA/UVB/ UVC, harmful radiation from ultraviolet rays which causes skin damage. Dermatological experts advise the use of sunscreens with a SPF (Sun Protection Factor) of 15 or higher. With SPF 15 on, skin will only begin to burn after 150

minutes. SPF 15 offers 88% protection and isolation against harmful rays, SPF 25 95%. Is it then true that the higher the SPF the better? Depending on the mode of action, sunscreens can be classified into physical sunscreens (i.e., those that reflect the sunlight) or chemical sunscreens (i.e., those that absorb the UV light). With physical sunscreens, the higher its SPF, the higher its mineral content, and the texture will be proportionally thicker. Prolonged use may lead to dehydration and closed-up pores. On the other hand, most chemical sunscreens are botanically based and thus more compatible with human skin. Consumers are therefore well-advised to browse the ingredients of any sunscreen before making a purchase.

The Match at Mission Hills and More

DAY 1 Beyond the Mission he recent match between golfing legends Tiger Woods and Rory McIllroy at Mission Hills in Haikou was a momentous occasion as it was the first time Tiger Woods returned to China since 2001 to participate in an event held by Mission Hills. Fore Girls was invited to cover the tournament but in addition to golf, we had the opportunity to gain an insight into future developments at Mission Hills not only as a leader in international golf but also in junior golf development, leisure and tourism. Mission Hills has begun to establish themselves as an organisation that is going beyond golf with a diversity that is the envy of many similar organisations. Before we report on the match itself, let us digress and talk about yet another major development of Mission Hills.

Dec 2013

After a rather long delay at Hong Kong International Airport before boarding the flight to Haikou on a familiar airline who shall remain nameless, we finally arrived at our destination. The day before the main event we were taken on a tour of a new project between Mission Hills and Dr Allan Zeman, the founder of the world famous Lan Kwai Fong. The two parties have entered into a joint partnership to develop a major tourist attraction next to the existing golf complex scheduled for a grand opening next year that will essentially recreate the Hong Kong Lan Kwai Fong experience in Haikou. Already under construction, the sheer pace and scale of this development is mindboggling. Dr Ken Chu, Chairman and CEO of Mission Hills and Dr Allan Zeman provided the press media with a personal tour showcasing the future of Haikou tourism. The 240,000 square metre site

will be home to hotels, restaurants, bars, an IMAX theatre, a shopping complex with 250 famous brands and private accommodation, you name it, they will have it. As always Mission Hills do not do things by halves. Conveniently located, only 15 mins from Haikou airport, you will be able to travel along the newly built motorway, to reach this mecca of entertainment. Tourists will find the ease of accessibility a most attractive prospect. It will be interesting to see the finished product next year and hopefully Fore Girls will be invited to the opening ceremony.

A Sit Down with Dr Ken Chu Back to golf. After the tour, we managed to sit down for a brief chat with Dr Ken Chu to gather his view and thoughts. The future of Mission Hills from Ken’s prospective is about the promotion of

what he calls the VMV (Vision, Mission and Value). The VISION, of creating a Chinese made international brand for leisure and tourism that promotes the Chinese dream in much the same way that Disney has been promoting the American dream. It is something that will take a lifetime to achieve. The MISSION, that relates to the things one must do day to day to achieve one’s goals and finally the VALUE, sharing the same beliefs and drive to succeed together. In terms of maintaining their number one position in China and indeed Asia, Ken feels that at this moment they are doing the right things in promoting golf but not just restricting themselves to this area. Mission Hills is looking beyond this by building a brand that will make them synonymous with leisure and tourism to become the resort destination of choice. Always

looking to be the first and progressing with the times. Responding to our question about his greatest achievement, Ken cites the importance of their junior golf development in providing youngsters with an opportunity to take up the sport and also the encouragement of golf as a family activity. He stressed the importance of each family member needing a strong relationship with one another and golf can provide this medium to strengthen the family connection. Ken Chu hopes that he can be remembered as a good son and in turn a good father to his son. For Ken, his father instilled core values in how one should live one’s life and he hopes that he can make his father proud and make the family name proud. It is not about the material wealth that you can provide that makes you a good father or son, it is

about making time for the people you care for. Will Ken be remembered as he hopes, time will tell.

Enter the Tigers After a break for dinner, we waited for the arrival of the tigers, Tiger and Rory (also known as the Celtic Tiger). When the time came for Tiger to arrive, there was a buzz in the air. Gradually the press and fans gathered at the main entrance of the hotel, trying to gain an advantageous spot for photos was anything but easy. In the end, I took what photos I could with great difficulty. An hour later it was the arrival of Rory and you guessed it, the same hustle and bustle ensued, yet another battle to take photos. After a long first day, it was time to retire to my room for a hot shower and a good night’s sleep. Dec 2013

Where is Tiger and Rory?

DAY 2 Match Day So, the alarm breaks the tranquillity of sleep in the early hours of the morning. After a light buffet breakfast, we meet with the Mission Hills organisers who gets us ready for the pre-match ceremony before the match tees off. After the customary press activities and photo opportunities, Tiger and Rory engage in a short golfing session with a group of junior golfers. Again, taking photos with other press members and the public all vying for a good spot was a challenge. I managed to strategically position myself to finally acquire some decent shots. Promotion of junior golf in China is a major initiative at the moment particularly for Mission Hills and as part of this, they arranged a Skills Challenge between Ti g e r, R o r y a n d C h i n a ’s u p c o m i n g young 15 year old star Guan Tianlong to see who could hit the longest drive. As it happened, Guan Tianlong won to the delight of the local crowd. Finally, the time came for the match between these two giants of golf. This tournament was open to the public and my word did the turn out exceed my expectations. An estimated 20,000 spectators descended on the signature Blackstone course. When I say descended, I literally mean just that. The stewards had the most difficult time trying to keep the

crowds at a distance to allow the players space to play. Spectators were literally everywhere, on the fairway, in the sand bunkers, in the rough, on the green, trying to get a glimpse of the two stars. I do feel sorry for the stewards for the monumental task they had to deal with. Even Tiger and Rory’s personal teams were beside themselves. As a member of the press, I have to say, this experience was an eye opener. After following Tiger and Rory for the first 4 holes, it was like guerilla warfare. A new strategy was needed, so accepting that it may be a lost cause, we retreated back to the main clubhouse for a short lunch and then made our way to the final hole in good time to gain a strategic position for one last ditched attempt to get the photos we needed. Finally, the crowds were brought to heel and we were able to do our job as the press. On this occasion Rory got the better of Tiger winning by one shot with a six under par 67 score and lifting a rather large and heavy trophy presented by Dr Ken Chu and Tenniel Chu. This match certainly lived up to expectations and was a great occasion and opportunity to promote golf in China. I hope that as golf becomes more prominent in China that conservative efforts are made to educate not just players but also spectators in the rules and etiquette of golf which are the building blocks of golf as without them the

whole essence of golf is lost. In summary, an eventful day of golf and most definitely an experience but the day is not finished, not yet.

The Rising Tiger After the match, we attended a short press interview with rising star Guan Tianlong who has shown great promise for the future. An ambitious youngster, he would like to achieve a grand slam of 4 majors in one year and when asked if he was confident of doing this in the next ten years, his answer was a resounding yes. In terms of being coached by a Chinese or Western coach, Tianlong explained that nationality was not an issue, what was important was having good communication and understanding of one another. Known for his short game, his advice to improving your game is ultimately practice. He hopes that in China more children will take up the sport as it is so readily accessible and so far for him, he has not had a moment where he wanted to give up the game and do something different. For the game of golf and particularly China golf, this is good news. With the tournament finished and press responsibilities completed, it brought an eventful two days to its conclusion.

The wait is over for Amy Yang as she outlasted a one-hole playoff with Hee Kyung Seo at the LPGA KEB·HanaBank Championship to become the fourth Rolex First-Time Winner this season. Both South Koreans fired 9-under three-day totals in regulation but Yang prevailed with a birdie on the first playoff hole at the par-5 18th. A member of the LPGA Tour since 2009, Yang has knocked on the door of her first-ever LPGA Tour victory several times including the 2011 Walmart NW Arkansas Championship Presented by P&G where she lost in a playoff to Yani Tseng and the 2012 U.S. Women’s Open where she finished runner-up. Playing in front of a large gallery consisting of several close friends and family, Yang fought back tears as she became the eighth Korean to win the LPGA KEB·HanaBank Championship since 2002.

Suzann Pettersen fired a final-round 3-under 69 to claim her 14th career LPGA Tour victory and successfully defend her title at the Sunrise LPGA Taiwan Championship. It was a head-to-head battle with Spaniard Azahara Munoz throughout the day but Pettersen pulled away late in the round to secure a five-stroke victory and clinch her fourth win of the season. With the win, Pettersen crossed the $2 million mark in season earnings with $2,241,847 and moves within $93,613 of Inbee Park on the LPGA Official Money List.

The Floridian fired rounds of 72-64-67-69 to claim a one-stroke victory over Stacy Lewis. While Lewis quickly made her way to the top of the leaderboard, she saw her lead dwindle with a bogey at the par-3 17th to drop into a tie with Thompson. Both players headed into the par-5 18th at 15-under par and left themselves with knee knocking birdie putts for the victory. First to play, Thompson calmly rolled in her birdie putt while Lewis’ putt skimmed the edge giving the young 18-year-old her third career LPGA Tour win.

FOREUM

Dressed for the Right Occasion Hello Fore Girls readers,

Fore Girls

Let's discuss a question dear to the hearts of all Lady Golfers ... Dress and let's start with dress code. Golf is known for being a rather conservative sport in this matter. Shirts with collars and always tucked in, shorts to be at least knee length and so on! Indeed there is nothing worse than being told prior to the start of your round at an unfamiliar club that you are in fact NOT suitably attired! A situation which invariably involves a frantic scramble around an under stocked and overpriced pro shop for something 'suitable to wear'!! I have seen this happen to golfers many times at clubs all over the world. For us ladies it's a complicated matter and I personally feel that the rule of thumb is 'if in doubt' when playing at an unfamiliar golf club in this region and particularly abroad then do give the club a telephone call and check their particular dress code. Dress rules can vary widely at individual golf clubs, I've seen people playing in flip flops (thongs as the Australians call them) and beach shorts at the Peter Thompson designed oldest public course in Melbourne and also was with a US professional when he was presented with a pair of long white socks to wear with his golf shorts for our round at Royal West Norfolk GC in England. Long shorts and knee length socks are compulsory there!! As you can see the discrepancies between individual clubs are HUGE!! We ladies should be particularly aware of club rules in non-Christian countries in the region such as Malaysia where sleeveless shirts (with or without a collar) are a NO GO zone! Have you ever fallen foul of dress code rules and/or think rules regarding golf attire are now simply 'outdated' in the 22st Century!! ??? As to the clothes themselves ... I am repeatedly asked where is the best place to buy golf attire for ladies at reasonable prices ...!!?? Especially for those of us who don't actually fit into a US size 0!!!?? Please do write in with any suggestions or places you've been to that seem to be where Fore Girls ladies should be shopping! Any tips or recommendations will be much appreciated!! Christmas is now closing in on us very soon and it's time to think about golfing presents too!!
