Welcome readers to our 1st Anniversary edition of FORE GIRLS Magazine! It has been an eventful twelve months so far but we made it! The whole editorial team would like to extend our heartfelt thanks to all the professional lady golfers who found time to feature on our covers and share with us their golf experiences. Our thanks also to the many local professional ladies of golf and business, supporting organisations, sponsors and contributors. It has been an absolute delight these past twelve months seeing ladies and junior golf raising their profiles in Hong Kong and Asia. FORE GIRLS hopes to continue our good work in promoting ladies and junior golf in the coming year and we look forward to your continuing support for us and the youngsters as they venture forth into the world of golf. Who founded the first ladies golf club in the world? When? And what’s their history? 誰創立了世上第一所女子高爾夫俱樂部？甚麼時候創立的？ The first ladies golf club was founded in 1867 by the daughters of members of the Royal and Ancient Golf Club, named the St. Andrews Ladies’ Golf Club. They changed their club name to the Ladies’ Putting Club in 1948. They played on the Himalayas, a historic putting green alongside the Old Course. After taking the penalty, you will have to go back to the 'right' tee box and replay your shot. Bethan Cutler The Ladies European Tour (LET) was established in 1978 in the UK as a means to provide opportunities in tournament play and golf promotions for lady golf professionals. Currently its headquarters is based at the Buckinghamshire Golf Club, near London. Over the years it has developed into a respected organisation promoting major tournaments in Europe and around the world where it often co-sanctions events with other golf organisations such as the China LPGA. FORE GIRLS Magazine had the opportunity to speak with Media Manager Bethan Cutler to gain an insight into her role within the LET.

When did you start playing golf? I started playing with plastic golf clubs when I was one and half years old. My parents then took me to the driving range and arranged a coach for me. What was your most memorable local game? The Hong Kong Junior Open Championship 2011. I was playing against players from China and Thailand. I didn’t start the second day very well but I was tied for every single hole until I lost at the last hole and ended the tournament as first runner-up. I still think it was a good tournament. Midsummer Classic Tournament 17th-18th June, 2014

The Midsummer Classic organised by the Hong Kong Golf Association is perhaps almost as popular as the Midsummer Night’s Dream amongst Hong Kong players. The tournament has attracted over 280 players to compete at the New Course of The Hong Kong Golf Club. Taiga Iwasa, the 15-year-old HKGA elite squad member, won with an over par 73 throughout the 2-day event and beat his fellow squad member Leon D’Souza by one shot. The Stableford format, first formally used in England in 1932 is still proven to be a great and popular competition format amongst golfers. Jonathan Brock, a five-handicapper who suffered from two early bogeys was able to recover at The Clearwater Bay Golf & Country Club, producing a level par for the rest of his round to become champion of the June Stableford Tournament. Not long after Swiss luxury watchmaker OMEGA announced its continued partnership agreement with ‘golf in DUBAi’, organiser of the world-class Dubai Desert Classic and Dubai Ladies Masters for a further three years through to 2017, here in Hong Kong, a golf day was held under the wonderful June sunshine at The Clearwater Bay Golf and Country Club. University is certainly one of the most memorable and wonderful times of one’s life. For Hong Kong’s beloved Tiffany Chan, this is yet another victory to add to her life beating over 60 fellow players at the 15th World University Championship as she pulled of one of the greatest results in the history of Hong Kong golf. Going head to head with Madrilenian Marta Sanz until the second hole of a sudden-death play-off after the pair had tied at 10-under 278 through four rounds of regulation play, Chan calmly holed a 10ft birdie putt on the 18th at the picturesque Crans-sur-Sierre course in the heart of the Swiss Alps, seemingly undeterred by Sanz’s 85ft eagle putt at the 14th hole. Chan, who entered the International University Sports Federation (FISU) event in a rich vein of form having won the NJCAA women's title in May said her putting and short game had been 'really strong'. “But I had a good session with Brad [Schadewitz, the Hong Kong national coach] on the range before the final round and I played much better. It's been a great week,” said Chan. “Half the victory should go to win.” Chan will also be competing on the China LPGA Tour in July followed by the Asian Games and the World Amateur Championships in September. "After this win I can aim higher," said Chan. "I'm going to spend the next couple of months working hard on my weaknesses and will try to do my best." US Women’s Open 美國女子公開賽 19th-22nd June, 2014

Michelle Wie has been in the public eye since the age of 13 after she became the youngest ever player to win the prestigious US Women’s Public Links Championship 11 years ago. Michelle went through a career slump missing the cut in 10 out of 23 events in 2012 and missed three cuts and finished no better than 45th in 2013. However, in 2014 she had 10, top 10 finishes in 14 events. This is the first major win for the Stanford graduate where she finished with two under 278 (68-68-72-70). World No.1, Stacy Lewis finished second with a score of 67-73-74-66 (280). “I can’t even think straight,” as Wie stated at the press conference. “I’m so happy right now. I’m just unbelievably happy. I’m so honored to have my name on the trophy. Just so grateful for everything. After coming up short at the US Women’s Open, Stacy held a one stroke lead over Cristie Kerr, Angela Stanford and Lydia Ko, and finished first at the Walmart NW Arkansas Championship by P&G. Stacy Lewis, a former University of Arkansas graduate said she had a mix of emotions all week playing at her adopted home. Pasadena native, Melissa (Mo) Martin made history at the British Open with a one-under 287 after four rounds, beating China favourite Feng Shanshan and former World No.2 Suzann Pettersen. After years of struggling on the LPGA Symetra Tour, the 31-year-old finished first at the RICOH British Open. The fact that Martin got to this point in her career is a testament to her determination. She credited her grandfather who support her both financially and emotionally for her success. Martin acknowledged there were times during her six years playing on the Symetra Tour that she had doubts about continuing on, but she always found a reason to continue. “Three things were my criteria to keep playing: I thought if I still woke up and I was happy in the morning; if I was still contributing to the women’s game and growing it; and three, if I was paying my own bills. So as long as I was accomplishing those, then I was going to keep playing,” said Martin, who was doused by many of her fellow LPGA players after her win. “This is just unbelievable. I'm just going to have fun. I'm excited for the rest of the season.” Fifteen-year LPGA Tour veteran Laura Diaz shot her career-low round of 62 on Thursday to take the first-round lead. She had a bogey-free round with nine birdies and started the day on the back nine with a streak of five consecutive birdies. Diaz credited her mental strength and staying in the moment for keeping her composure after a red-hot start with five straight birdies. Laura had thought of retiring, being a mum isn’t an easy task on the tour. Despite the stormy conditions at Orient Shanghai, China national team player Li Jiayun captured her third professional win at the tournament with 12-under for 204 (67-69-68), a five stroke victory from distant second Pan Yan Hong (69-6872). “It is a great win because it is such a strong field, including many top international players. The last two wins were just local events so I’m delighted. This is awesome,” said 25-year-old Li. I was far behind entering the final round so the win was unreachable for me. Monday is my birthday, so this is some kind of gift to me. My goal is two or three wins this year, but you should start with the first win.” “One under today, I didn’t consider it a bad score. There were many pins on the slope, it was hard to hit close and make birdies. It was my first time here and I know the course now. The Clearwater Bay Executive Nine Junior Open Summer Tournament 清水灣行政九洞青少年公開賽 21st June, 2014

The recent junior event held at the Clearwater Bay Golf Club and sponsored by Poodle Golf started with a hiccup owing to the heavy downpour in the early hours of the morning. Delayed by a few hours, the event eventually teed off as the skies cleared. All the kids who competed had a wonderful time playing some remarkable golf showing great promise for the future. With four age categories for both the boys and girls, the winners were as follows for the girls, Selina Li (13-14 years), Tiffany Wu (11-12 years), Jolie Jing Hin Wong (9-10 years) and Arianna Lau (8 years and under). The winners for the boys were Charles Chung (13-14 years), Timothy Chan (11-12 years), Michael Yuen (9-10 years) and Leo Wong (8 years and under). Additionally, Poodle Golf also sponsored a luck draw handing out several prizes, offering those who were not in the trophy contention an opportunity to walk home with at least a prize.
