Welcome to the September edition of FORE GIRLS! Yes, you did see four boys instead of a female golfer on our cover this month. Having seen Hong Kong’s emerging local golf starlets win in several international championships recently, C AllStar, a local vocal quartet have come together to encourage more youths to start playing golf. As you read their story, you will perhaps hear angelic tunes ‘off the paper’! We also had a chat with HKPGA professional coach Jackie Johnson, an advocate of women’s golf who shares her experience in coaching lady golfers. As the early autumn breeze blows through the golf course, it is time for our readers to go and try new golf courses and enjoy the tail end of summer. We, on the other hand, will follow closely to see how Team Hong Kong is preparing for the Asian Games after the Nanjing Youth Olympics! Best of luck, Team Hong Kong. FORE GIRLS will be hosting a golf day to celebrate our first anniversary shortly after the Moon Festival and on a side note, I wonder what it is like playing 18 holes under the moonlight. As Hong Kongâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s only public golf course, Kau Sai Chau has been operational since midDecember 1995 and is a joint venture between the Hong Kong Government and the Hong Kong Jockey Club. The former providing the land on loan and the latter providing financing of HK$500 million to build the golfing complex. Managed by the Hong Kong Jockey Club on behalf of the Government, this non-profit organisation has been able to promote and provide access to golf for the Hong Kong public.

社區高爾夫

作為香港唯一一個公眾高爾夫球場，滘西洲自 1995 年 12 月起正式投入運作。當時由香港政府租出地段；香港賽馬會撥款五億興建場內設施。現時球場由香港賽馬會代表政府管理，屬於非牟利機構，旨在為香港大眾提供機會接觸高爾夫球。只需由西貢碼頭乘坐短程渡輪，你便可以盡情享用此公眾高爾夫球場所提供的服務設施。位處於滘西洲崎嶇不平的海岸，西迎牛尾灣怡人景色，這裏共有三個 18 洞球場。南、北場由著名高球好手及設計師 Gary Player 設計，北場是有名的高難度球場，原因地勢險要，也是許多球手失球的地方；東場則由 Nelson and Haworth 設計，以球場四周景色見稱，令打球成為賞心悅目的事。無論是偶爾揮捍或是高球常客，都可一邊挑戰三個不同難度的球場，一邊將西頁市及南中國海的景致盡收眼底。

We have all wanted to catch a star at some point in our lives, yet few have succeeded. Some of us have attempted but failed, while others do not even dare try. From their humble beginnings five years ago, C AllStar, a local home grown vocal quartet have been working their way up to the stars becoming widely recognised for their a cappella style of singing and of course a string of touching Canto-pop chart hits. Today, however, the quartet are not here to perform, but to share the consonance of music and golf with the younger generation.

每個人在生命裏或曾想過把天上的星星摘下來，可是成功的總不多。有人嘗試、失敗，繼而放棄；有人始終沒有勇氣去伸出手來。然而，本地男子歌唱組合 C AllStar 從數年前只被稱為「天梯」到今天為人所認識，一步一步的踏上了星途，而在音樂表演及為觀眾帶來膾炙人口的作品以外，這四位大男孩更與青少年人大談音樂與高爾夫球的共鳴之處。

f the four individuals that make up C AllStar, there is articulate Andy. Intense, outgoing and cheerful, Andy Leung tells us why music and golf can both provide a positive impact on the youth of today. Fore Girls asked Andy why he thought playing golf is important for the younger generation. “Everyone has a period in their lives when they rely on their parents, just as I did when I was younger. My parents, however, would enrol me into many extra-curricular activities like boot camps where I can learn to be independent in those circumstances. For golf, it is a great way of developing independence and to handle different aspects at the same time as you are essentially your own coach on the green, and this is where young people need training.” And how does Andy relate a musician to a golfer? “Playing golf and performing both require you to be in different places, so for a singer, you have to adapt to a new location and its surroundings. Similarly, a golfer has to make adjustments using different clubs, postures and strategies from the fairways to the greens. You also have to instil your own character into your swing or when holding a microphone.” Remarking that he had only been to a driving range, Andy imagined a golf course to be a place where people can enjoy the outdoors and hear birds chirping. “We are all used to working indoors, so we should try a sport that also brings us closer to nature.”

C AllStar 四員之中，梁釗峰 ( 釗峰 ) 情感豐富、開朗外向，他認為音樂及高爾夫球同樣能為年青一代起着正面積極的效用。當問到為甚麼高爾夫球對下一代如此重要時，他說：「每個人總有倚賴父母的時期，而我也是這樣的人。自小父母雖疼惜我，但也會鼓勵我參加課外活動及軍訓等，讓我一個人學習在外生活。高爾夫講求球員的自立和同一時間要處理不同的事情，在高爾夫球場上，你的教練就是自己。我覺得這正正是年青人需要鍛鍊的。」至於音樂人和高爾夫球員有何相似之處？釗峰認為打球和音樂同樣需要到不同場地。歌手要要適應該地方和周邊環境，同樣球員也需要面對球場裏的不同地方，如果嶺、長草區等，這些地方的用桿、姿勢及戰術也各有不同，故要因而作出調整。另外，他覺得打球和唱歌時，手中如何拿着麥克風和球桿也要擁有自己的個性。他又坦言自己只到過練習場而未親身到標準球場，但可想像高爾夫球埸應該和大自然貼近得聽到雀鳥聲，故要鼓勵年青人開始接觸高爾夫球：「都市人通常在室內工作或活動，應該嘗試接觸這項運動之餘亦藉此親近大自然。」

Then there is creative Kenny Chan a former professional footballer who also writes songs for the group and enjoys his singing career just as much as sports. Kenny, what changes did you notice in yourself over the past five years? “The way I see it, I was a student then but now singing has become my life so I have set a much higher standard in everything I do. From recording to musical arrangements, I am taking these a lot more seriously.” Kenny, what do you think is the key to great music and great golf? “Not being nervous, if you are nervous while singing the throat gets tight and will affect your voice, the same applies to golf. If your muscles are tense due to nervousness, this will affect your swing and you could risk pulling your muscles. So you have to trust the clubs will give you the distance with a good swing, just as a singer has to trust themselves when they sing.” We also asked Kenny what he thought about golf. “I used to think golf was for seniors and more mature individuals but I have come to know recently that children as young as three or four can start learning and they are very competitive in large scale golf events. I also believe that golf is beneficial to personal development, since players have to make their own decisions from selecting the right clubs to adjusting body movements, so in the long run the children will become more confident.”

陳健安 (On 仔 ) 曾作職業足球員，現時會為組合創作歌曲，對他來說，歌唱和運動都是他所享受的人生樂趣。過去五年，On 仔看見自己最大的轉變在於心態之上：「初出道時仍是學生，現在已成為職業歌手，我也視它為終生職業，所以現在對錄音和編曲會更加執着。」被問到唱出好歌和打好高爾夫球的秘訣，On 仔認為最重要的是不要緊張。因為當唱歌緊張時，喉嚨會收緊，也會傷及聲帶。打球亦如是，當球員緊張時，肌肉拉緊，不但未必能做出心目中的揮桿，而且有可能會拉傷肌肉。所以，打球時要相信那支桿能為你打出一記好球；正如歌手唱歌時也要相信自己一樣。不問不知，原來高爾夫球對 On 仔來說本是較年長或成熟的人的玩意，但後來他得知原來年紀小至三、四歲也可開始學打高爾夫球，而且現今青少年賽事也發展蓬勃，他說：「我也相信打高爾夫球對個人發展有很大幫助，因為一個球員在球場上由選桿到發力都是要靠自己做的選擇，故長遠來說可提高少年人的自信。」 Sep 2014

Jase Ho, the third member of the quartet is the bespectacled bass singer who reveals his understanding of the philosophy of golf as he unfolds the mystery of the game, and calls the sport ‘outstanding’. We asked Jase what his interpretation of golf and music was. “For me golf requires a lot of patience, and so does singing. During performances, some audiences may be more enthusiastic, whereas some are less so. Instead of rushing we take our time allowing the audience to sync with us creating a more intensive atmosphere during the show.” Jase also believes golf is a special sport because unlike many other ball games such as basketball, golf is a sport with progression in that the player does not always shoot a hole-in-one, it takes time, effort and concentration to slowly hit the ball into the cup, and no two golf games are alike. Whimsical as it may sound Jase remarked that if they could change microphones for different styles of songs like golfers changing clubs in a game, this might bring about a totally new and exotic experience. “How would I encourage youngsters today to start golf? Can you imagine, if your schoolmates ask how you normally spend your time and you said, ‘I play golf.’ How outstanding would that be? This is a whole different world.”

架上眼鏡的何建曦 (Jase) 在團隊裏包辦低音，沉穩的他向大家揭示高爾夫球的哲學，並稱高球為一項「突出」的運動。他將高爾夫球解讀為一項極需要耐性的運動，又說其實唱歌亦如是，因為在不同的表演場合中，有些台下觀眾的情緒氣氛較高漲，有些則非然，故不能操之過急，要與他們同步，進而帶起氣氛。他明白高爾夫球之特別之處在於它是一項循序漸進的運動，不像籃球等運動，很快便可將球射中進網而得分；反之需要要慢慢打到洞口。酷愛音樂的他想把高爾夫球的甚麼特性帶進音樂表演之中？他說若唱歌也可和打高爾夫球會換桿一樣，每唱到不同的歌曲便換麥克風，也許會是嶄新的體驗。「我會如何鼓勵年青人開始接觸高爾夫球？試想像一下，當同學問到你平常玩甚麼活動的時候，你說：我平常多打高爾夫的。這令你有多突出？這簡直是兩個世界。」

Last but not least is beatboxer King Wu, who is thrilled by the group’s new trouvaille, golf and tells us why it is the season’s ‘musttry’ activity. “Kenny is a footballer and the rest of us are huge fans of basketball, and we have been able to play both sports together during our leisure time. However, our recent interest is golf, and I am eager to share with everyone what it feels like playing on a golf course later on.” King remarked that there are some similar elements needed in both golf and music. “I believe golf requires a lot of accuracy in terms of mechanics and hitting the ball to your desired spot, and being pitchperfect is also fundamental in singing.” “There are of course a lot of benefits that our youngsters can learn from playing golf. Some eminent examples are learning etiquette, improving patience and the Emotional Quotient (EQ) of a player. Golf is also an outdoor sport and involves the full body, so it is a healthy game and possesses all the criteria that is needed to consider when selecting a new sport.”

團隊最近發現了高爾夫球這項新玩意，beatbox 口技了得的吳崇銘 (King) 為你解答為何高爾夫球是本季的必試運動：「On 仔曾是足球員，我和其餘幾位成員最喜歡的就是籃球，當然我們現在也會互相影響，兩種運動也是常玩。可是我們最近發現了一項對我們來說很新穎的運動，這就是高爾夫球，我也很期待在真正下標準球場後和大家分享箇中感受。」 King 發現準繩度是在高爾夫球和音樂之中的必要元素，高爾夫球中所用到力學，甚至要將球打到你想它到達的地方時，其實需要很高的準確度；當然在歌唱之中，音準也是最基本的元素。他又認為打高爾夫球的好處有很多，其中包括學懂比賽的禮儀、訓練耐性和情緒商數 (EQ)。而且高爾夫球基本上是在戶外進行，是有益健康的全身運動，作為一種新嘗試去接觸的運動，它具備了各項條件，年青人不妨接觸高爾夫球。

CLINIC In a tournament, can a player place a golf club on the ground to help line them up for a putt? 比賽時，球員可否將球桿放在地上幫助瞄準推桿方向？ No. The player, their partner or either of their caddies are allowed to point out the putting line prior to - but not during - the stroke. However, they are not allowed to touch the green. Golfers can move a golf ball to improve its lie. Those areas are usually limited to the fairway. However, winter rules are something that a player cannot declare in effect. Originally from Bromley, Kent in the UK, Jackie Johnson is a professional golf coach currently based in Hong Kong. Jackie has been a keen sports person since a young age and was encouraged by her parents to participate in a wide range of sports. Squash would become her primary sport where she represented England at international level. However, both her parents were avid golfers and at the age of seven her father gave her a set of cut down clubs and she would practice in the back garden until an errant ball into a neighbourâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s greenhouse indicated it was time to tread the links. The key to a wide arc is the SHOULDER TURN. As you turn, you want your hands as far from your head as possible. Feel your shoulders turn with your arms as an extension of your shoulders, working together, not independently. 要達到上桿時擁有大的弧度，重點在於肩膀的轉動，同時手要放在距離頭部最遠的位置。轉動肩膀時，緊記手臂要和肩膀一起轉動，而不是逐部份分開轉動。

The golf swing travels on an arc. A bigger arc equals more distance. If your left arm breaks down on the backswing, you are shortening the swing radius, thus killing any chance for good distance. My Turn?

ack in 2006, when I returned from Australia to begin my training programme in Hong Kong, my target students were children between the ages of 4 and 18 as well as junior golfers. I could recall hesitant voices asking, “At the age of 4? Would that be too early for them? Will they be able to learn it? They wouldn’t even have the strength to hold the clubs, would they?” In the end, I still had a good number of 4-year-old students. In recent years, many parents have instead brought their 2- and 3-year-olds to the academy, hoping they could start learning golf at such a tender age. So, is it really the earlier the better? My answer is both a ‘yes’ and a ‘no’. I say ‘yes’, because people of any age should develop a habit of exercising in some form, and since the level of control for their bodies and the sport itself is higher when the player is younger, it will be easier for the person to acquire the sporting skill at a younger age. Let’s take cycling as an example. If a person has successfully learnt how to cycle when they were young, even though they had spent 30 years without cycling, a cycling day out 30 years later with friends and families is not a problem for them. However, golf can be a strenuous sport since it involves a lot of muscle groups, hence making it harder for children to master. Perhaps you will see quicker progress when you sign them up for golf classes just a little later.

Hong Kong Junior Open Championship 香港青少年錦標賽 14th-15th August, 2014 Attracting players from as far afield as India, Singapore, Thailand, China and Chinese Taipei, the Hong Kong Junior Open Championship was held at The Clearwater Bay Golf & Country Club over two days. 14-year-old Max Ting, after he was qualified for the Hong Kong Open last December, appeared to have been a regular on the leaderboard. A member of the host venue, he finished with 144, four ahead from Thailand’s Tripop Sirisambandh to claim the title for the first time. China’s Yin Yan-ru in the girls’ division ended her two rounds with 143, easing to a fivestroke win over compatriot Zhu Qen-qi. “I was actually pretty impressed on my scores for those two days. On the first day, I was a little nervous because it was my first time playing white tees in a competition in Clearwater Bay, and for my distance, it was a little challenging and far. My short game was really good that day and I saved many pars. On the second day, I was also a little nervous after the first hole which I got a double par with 4 putts. I tried to calm myself down which took a few holes and started playing better on the fourth hole. For me, the most challenging parts of this course are the long par 4s and two of the par 3s (1st and 6th). On long par 4s, I try to think of it as a short par 5 where I can try to make 'birdie' which is actually a par. Another challenging thing is the strong wind, where choosing the right club and direction is really important. And, it was really hot and humid, so it was not easy pushing our trolleys up the steep hills. My competitors did really well. Even though some of them didn't play as well as they usually do, I feel they still did a really good job and it was probably because they weren't as familiar with the course. This tournament has the history, and it has all the memories with us,” Park said. “So being able to put my name on this trophy twice and being able to do it here in Rochester is such a great honour, and yeah, we’ll be missing Rochester. Fall/Winter Women’s Golf Preview

女子秋冬賽事前瞻 11th September will see the Ladies European Tour and LPGA team up again for the last major of the season for The Evian Championship with all the top players returning including defending champion Suzann Pettersen, China’s amateur Yan Jing and France’s own rookie Ariane Provot. With three Americans having won three majors this year, we shall see if they can continue their dominance. Over in Asia, with a short hiatus in the CLPGA schedule, we look forward to the upcoming Reignwood LPGA Classic, a co-sanctioned event with the LPGA. The Beijing Pine Valley International Golf Club plays host once again attracting the top stars of ladies golf to the capital of China. Feng Shanshan delighted the home crowd at last year’s inaugural event as she won her second LPGA title. Let us see if she can repeat the victory in October. This tournament is the start of what will surely be the LPGA’s initiative to expand into Asia as golf continues to grow in this new market.

This year’s Sime Darby LPGA Malaysia tournament (9th-12th October) is certainly promising to make an even bigger mark in the world of ladies golf. With defending champion Lexi Thompson returning to defend her title, she is also joined by recent winner of the Marathon Classic and World No. 2 Lydia Ko. Both players are just two of the many top players to be joining the 75-player field at the Kuala Lumpur Golf and Country Club (KLGCC). Malaysia’s top event will also feature six homegrown talents affectionately known as the ‘Malaysian Angels’. This stellar event will provide a great opportunity for these local golfers to pit their skills against the world’s best. Organisers have really opened up this tournament to the public and Steven Thielke, General Manager of KLGCC expressed his delight in Lydia Ko’s participation citing her as one of the new generation of golfers who are taking golf to a new level. Additionally, Steven was most pleased with the access to the tournament for fans where they hope to create a celebration on and off the course.
