Interview with Mark Tupling, head of course maintenance at Quinta do Lago Quinta do Lago is one of the best and most recognized golf venues in Europe. What was the motivation for the €7 million improvement project? Due to the consistently high demand to play the South Course, we have been unable to carry out significant renovation projects over the years. The mandatory closure gave the resort a great opportunity to invest in the course and improve the surfaces and playing experience that we offer. The South Course has played an integral part in the history of the resort and holds a special place in the hearts of so many of our residents and guests. As an eight-time host of the Portuguese Open, it is truly an iconic golfing venue and the enhancement programme that we’ve devised will help to ensure that it strengthens its position at the forefront of European golf. One part of the project is to enhance players’ experiences? What in particular are you planning and how shall this enhance the already existing high experience? Aside from the improved playing surfaces, we have been able to create space adjacent to fairways. This has created stunning views through the course and will also improve playability and speed of play. All 48 bunkers on the course have been trimmed to their original size, with new drainage and sand added and compacted, while several bunkers within the pine tree canopy have been adjusted to give access to the green and two bunkers
relocated to favour the modern game. In addition, the lakes on the third and 17th holes have been upgraded with new retaining walls to give a sharp, modern look consistent with the other lakes on the course, and the 16th hole has been improved by bringing the lake into play behind the green, adding drama to the closing holes. How do you measure your guests’ experience? Do you use a regular feedback process, e.g. based on questionnaires? If yes: which tool do you apply, how often do you contact your guests and members? Making sure that we offer a high-quality experience and excellent customer service is very important to everyone at Quinta do Lago and we have a very close and open relationship with our members. The club is a second home to them and we share our goals with open feedback. We also take more formal feedback through mystery shoppers, and working with The 59Club helps tailor our training platforms so that we can keep ahead of the market. You are cooperating with the GEO foundation: are you applying their on course program or are you aiming at an official certification? Which pros and cons do you see with either just participating in the on course program or becoming GEO certified? We are currently following the OnCourse programme with a goal to become certified.
The GEO Foundation has the widest range of targets from the various sustainability platforms covering all three pillars; Economy, Environment, Community. This places the focus on all areas of our business to improve in this area and ultimately be recognised for the excellent work golf offers in society. I am an advocate for environmentally-responsible approaches to life and this is something I also aspire to uphold in the way I manage

golf courses. Quinta do Lago is blessed to border the Ria Formosa – one of the world’s largest nature reserves – and working with environmental organisations is a focus of mine in promoting the benefits that golf courses offer in nature. GEO is a pan-European approach. Is there also a Portuguese program for golf courses regarding sustainability such as “Golf & Nature” in Germany? If yes: why have you chosen GEO instead of the local program? We are working closely with the local environment agencies; however, these policies focus solely on the environmental impacts of the golf courses. We wanted to have a broader approach and an international reach to our customers. Irrigation is an important factor. Which improvements are you planning, how will this be embedded into daily maintenance? Are there also constructional enhancements such as additional catch basins? And by how many percent are you planning to reduce water consumption per year? In 2020, we changed our irrigation practices to be based on evapotranspiration by taking information from our on-site weather stations. This method of irrigation gives the plant exactly what was lost from the previous 24 hours, plus enough water to grow and stay healthy. This winter, we have invested in a major upgrade of the irrigation pumps on the

South Course which will improve efficiency and save water and power. We plan on making the same upgrades on the North Course this coming winter. Rather than aiming for an unrealistic saving year-on-year, it’s our aim to keep consumption below the past five years’ average consumption. This will remove the irregularities of rainfall and heatwaves as well as providing more accurate targets to be set. Sustainability also includes a social approach. How will stakeholders and the local community around Algarve profit from the ongoing project? This is an investment. Saving water and saving electricity is a duty that everyone has worldwide. As a resort, we have a responsibility to reduce our carbon footprint. These are the expectations of our board members and Quinta do Lago wants to be seen as leaders in this field worldwide. We have always been a resort driven by nature with an environmental focus. We are a destination which lends itself to outdoor living and Covid enabled us to reflect on what is important and launch an enhanced ecostrategy. Creating new habitat for endangered species is another important approach within sustainability programs. Which activities are you planning in this context?
www.thegolfguide.co.uk
We currently work very closely with a local non-profit organisation who regularly map and audit our golf courses. One of the early driving forces behind the creation of open areas adjacent to the fairways was the removal of non-native plant species which are slowly replacing the native flora and fauna that live there. We are now monitoring these areas closely and will take action should we see change to the ecosystem. We have also installed more than100 bird boxes in the estate along with bug hotels, with the aim of increasing the species numbers as natural deterrents against processionary caterpillars and mosquitoes. What benchmarks and KPIs have you set-up to monitor the ongoing project and its future application in daily business? Economical benchmarks have been created as a key component to the sustainability of the business. We have then complemented that with reduction of resource use, increase in player ratings and an increase in market position. To what extent do legal restrictions and given laws (local, regional and/or nationwide) support or hinder your current project? How did you overcome given obstacles? During the summer of 2020, due to the pandemic, the local authorities made it
an exception for large projects and the construction industry to stay active. This gave the region a lifeline and also allowed for the improvement work to take place. Does the current project also include the use of new seedings or overseeding concepts for fairways and/or greens? If yes: which? The fairways and tees have been replaced with Hybrid Bermudagrass Tifway 419. The maintained rough will be transitioned to Kikuyugrass, which is now endemic in the region and will continually lower our irrigation and resource consumption. The project requires a huge investment. What is the estimated pay-back duration, how much (in percent) of the pay-back shall be achieved by savings in maintenance costs, how much by additional golf-related revenue (which additional revenue shall be created, e.g. higher greenfees?) and how much by other revenue, e.g. from real estate? With the low-density nature, green belt and, most importantly, because the shareholders continue to invest, our pay back on this will be to remain Europe’s number one destination and beyond. And we remain committed to continuing to improve our offers and our products so that we can offer the best customer experience possible to our resident, members and guests.

Quinta da Marinha prepares for tourism trends with €1.5m villa renovation Quinta da Marinha is offering golfers the perfect balance of privacy, Portuguese authenticity and contemporary décor after investing €1.5m into the refurbishment of its 27 villas. With self-contained accommodation set to be the trend this summer and beyond as people ease themselves back into international travel and busy hotels following the Covid-19 pandemic, the Lisbon resort has refurbished and expanded all its existing villas to entice groups of friends and families. As well as renovating each villa to give them a fresh new look, they have also been adapted to create more space. Previously offering one-bedroom (Th1) and two-bedroom (Th2) options, each villa has been reconfigured to fit an extra single bedroom, so can now accommodate either one more adult or child each.
The Th1 villa can now accommodate two adults and two children or three adults and one child, while the Th2 now sleeps four adults and two children or five adults and one child. Other than the spacious, comfortable rooms, each villa is also fully air-conditioned and features a living room with fireplace and flatscreen TV showing satellite channels, free WiFi, fully-equipped kitchenette, in addition to a garden and large outdoor terrace. Under an hour’s drive from Lisbon in stunning Cascais, the five-star Quinta da Marinha resort is part of the ‘Great Hotels of the World’ portfolio and boasts an esteemed Robert Trent Jones-designed par-71 golf course with outstanding views over the Atlantic Ocean and the Sintra Mountains. Quinta da Marinha’s idyllic location in the heart of the Portuguese countryside is perfect for holidaymakers looking to escape and disconnect from the stresses of the past 18 months, while also having the option to keep space from other travellers. For those who would like to stay in their own ‘bubble’, picnic baskets and meals can be ordered as a takeaway from the resort’s Rocca restaurant or even delivered to the villa’s door. There is also a concierge service so that guests can purchase goods without the need to leave their accommodation. Quinta da Marinha sales director, João Pinto Coelho, said: “Our villa renovation programme
has been completed just as the right time as we start to welcome back international visitors again. “We feel that this type of accommodation will be extremely popular for the remainder of the year with people desperate to get away, but may still want to distance themselves from the hustle and bustle and limit their social contact. Our villas are the perfect solution – as our guests will still be able to escape to the spectacular Portuguese sunshine and enjoy everything our resort has to offer.” Guests can combine rounds of golf with visits to the resort’s outdoor pool, the heated indoor pool, as well as the sauna, Turkish bath and sensory showers. There is also an abundance of other activities available at an extra cost, including bike tours, horse riding, tennis and padel courts, surfing lessons and private guided tours to Sintra and Lisbon. A stunning stretch of coastline is just a few minutes away, while there is much more to the enticing region with wine-tasting, historic landmarks, outstanding beaches – including the famous Guincho Beach – and the breathtaking natural beauty of the SintraCascais Natural Park to explore. 5. Focus Breathing awareness is the number one element in the practice of yoga. The quality of breath has a direct relationship to the quality of the pose and the mind. When the body is over-stressed, either in a yoga pose or in the golf swing, erratic, short breathing is the first sign. By providing tools for incorporating breathing into the pre-shot routine, the golfer practices rhythm and tempo through breath. Focus, meditation, and visualization are indispensable tools on the golf course.

5 ways yoga can help you improve your golf game Yoga for golfers incorporates flexibility, strength, balance, core conditioning, and breathing awareness. Yoga for golfers also teaches focus, relaxation, and visualization techniques. The sequence of postures is carefully designed to meet a golfer’s specific needs. Yoga for Golfers program slightly modifies certain aspects of the traditional yoga practice. We offer simplified breathing techniques to enhance concentration and increase endurance on the golf course. Meditation is practiced to calm the mind, increase focus, and visualize the desired golfspecific outcomes. 1. Flexibility Flexibility, the most obvious physical benefit for golf that can be achieved through yoga, is a core component of the YFG program.
Flexibility increases the range of motion in the golf swing, reduces swing faults caused by short, tight muscles. 2. Better balance In golf, balance in the stance and throughout the entire swing plane is vital for a repeatable and reliable golf swing. 3.Strengths Strength is achieved in yoga by flexing or engaging the muscles. We use the force of gravity and bodyweight to build strength. 4.Core conditioning Core conditioning, which involves strengthening the centrally important abdominal and back muscles are one of the most important aspects of golf performance and a critical element for longevity in the sport.
Regardless of age, physical challenge, or flexibility, Yoga for golfers offers the tools to begin, maintain, and advance one’s yoga practice to achieving results both on and off the golf course. Palheiro Golf to flower with new Autumn tournament
Golfers across the UK and Europe have added incentive to head to Palheiro Golf in Madeira this autumn with the launch of a new event that showcases some of the finest experiences that the award-winning resort has to offer on and away from the fairways. Taking place from October 1-5, the inaugural ‘Palheiro Gardens Golf Classic’ combines world-class golf with the opportunity to sample a slice of the islands’ famous culture and history – including Madeira’s globally acclaimed annual ‘Festa da Flor’ Flower Festival. Costing just €110 per person to enter or free when purchasing a three or five-day Madeira Golf Passport beforehand, the event features a pre-tournament sunset welcome party before players compete in an 18-hole individual Stableford competition on Palheiro Golf’s acclaimed championship course, with unique giveaways and a prize-giving ceremony with cocktail included at the famous Palheiro Gardens. A trip to the island’s capital of Funchal to the Madeira Flower Festival follows the day after the tournament with free golf also included in the event package, while on Monday, October 4, there will be a special visit to the famous Blandy’s Madeira Wine Lodge in Funchal including wine tasting. Regularly ranked among the top 100 resorts in Europe, Palheiro Golf is one of three outstanding golf venues in the archipelago of Madeira. Designed by Cabell B. Robinson, the venue’s par-72, 6,656-yard (6,086m) course is situated within the magnificent Palheiro Estate, which is more than 200 years old. At nearly 1,640ft above sea level, the location enjoys dramatic views of Madeira’s mountainous skyline and the ocean, as well
as – nestling below, just 10 minutes away – the island’s capital, Funchal. Taking place this year from October 1-24, the Madeira Flower Festival offers visitors the unforgettable chance to experience a kaleidoscope of colour and the magic that runs through the municipalities of the Madeira archipelago with an array of unique exhibits made totally from flowers. Palheiro Golf and the other two-18 hole courses in Madeira and her islands, Clube de Golfe Santo da Serra and Porto Santo Golf have enjoyed a steady increase in overseas bookings in the last 12 months with growing numbers of European golfers eager to experience the many benefits of playing firstclass golf in a safe and secure environment. Located approximately 1,000km from the European mainland – and just 500km from the African continent – the island destination, named as the world and Europe’s leading island destination at the 2020 World Travel Awards, enjoys an amazingly mild climate, ranging from 25°c in the summer to 17°c in the winter, with very mild average temperatures and moderate humidity, making it the perfect year-round location for a golf break. Visiting the islands has never been easier, with a wide range of flights operating on a daily basis from all over the UK and Europe, and Madeira. Belongs to all – the consumer-facing brand of the Madeira Promotion Bureau – has taken every step to ensure the safety of every resident and visitor. Since the start of the pandemic, the archipelago has been considered one of the safest destinations in Europe and has been widely praised for its handling of the Covid-19 crisis. Madeira has recently been named as one of the safest destinations for 2021 by European Best Destinations and has
worked closely with SGS, the world’s leading certification company, to ensure safe practice across the destination and minimise risk in regard to Covid-19. Under the umbrella brand “Madeira Safe to Discover”, Madeira. Belongs to all has published updated guidelines for all incoming visitors, including for people who have been vaccinated or have recovered from Covid-19. The green corridor already exists at Madeira airport for those who arrive with a vaccination certificate or with proof of a negative PCR test done within 72 hours. Alternatively, visitors can take a free test at the airport on arrival. One free PCR test per visitor is offered, to be taken on arrival or departure, with results in 12 hours. There are also discounts on offer for any further tests required, with PCR tests from €90 and antigen tests from €18. In addition, a tourist or individual who has tested positive in the last 90 days may be excused, if they are provided with a medical document that proves and certifies that this carrier is recovered from the disease Covid-19 and that it has occurred in the last three months. Incoming visitors will also be subject to thermal screening, even if they carry a negative test for Covid-19. The best way to enjoy the archipelago’s golf is with a Madeira Golf Passport which, providing holders with an unrivalled golf experience, is available to both individuals and groups and can be booked on a three or five-round basis. GOLF SANTO ANTÓNIO Surrounded by lush gardens, nestling in the hillsides bordering the Costa Vicentina Natural Reserve sits Santo António Golf and Leisure Resorts.
Two kilometres north of the small fishing village of Salema and situated close to the rural village of Budens, the centerpiece of the resort is the spectacular 18 hole golf course designed by Pepe Gancedo, one of Spain’s´s most renown architects. Opened in 1987, the course offers a challenge, which tempts golfers back time after time. With no 2 holes remotely similar, the variety and appeals is endless. From the stunning dog-legged 1st , to the majestic elevated green of the 18th, set in a natural amphitheatre bellow the clubhouse terrace, it is one of those rare courses that stretches your skills to the limit. The famous `postage stamp´ short par three 5th, played from an elevated tee to a green which sits on top of a hillock, is a great favourite. The picturesque par three 11th, guarded on two sides by water, is followed by a par five which leads the player up the “Valley of the Wells” to another elevated green on the 12th.

After Budens turn right at the next roundabout. GPS Coordinates Having played along the “Lost Valley” of the new par four 14th, with its incredible views of the village of Figueira and the sea beyond, you are faced with the dramatic tee shot of the par three 15th. On the tee, the player is presented with an imposing view of a fabulous lake, which has to be carried in order to reach the wide but shallow green. Water again comes into play on the 16th and 17th, where bold yet accurate tee shots will reap dividends for the brave, though both holes will also prove rewarding to the higher handicap golfer. One round is not enough to fully appreciate the imaginative design, or the magnificent views. “Floresta Parque Golf Clube” was officially federated by the Portuguese Golf Federation in 1994 and has already earned a reputation for world-class golf, stating major events including the Expresso BPI Corporate
Challenge, Finibanco Corporate Challenge, and the Europro Tour Championship Finals. The resort holds regular golf festivals, twice weekly competitions and boasts a busy social calendar for residents and visitors alike. Of course, the resort is not just a golf course. Relax and unwind in Santo Antonio SPA, take a invigorating sports massage to help loosen up overworked muscles, or ease those aches and pains in the Jacuzzi, sauna or steam room, ready for another 18 holes or perhaps a game of tennis the following day. When the sun goes down, what better way to enjoy the perfect end to the perfect day than to visit the”19th hole where a welcoming clubhouse with à la carte restaurant awaits you, or if your preference is the Italian menu, then you can try our “Vicentino’s Trattoria” restaurant, offering a choice of traditional Italian dishes.

ESPICHE GOLF Respect for the traditions of golf and the natural environment were the inspiration behind the layout of the Espiche Golf course in Lagos, Algarve, and the result has been one that offers a true challenge for golfers of all levels
Set within unspoilt undulating countryside, the greens and fairways of Espiche Golf course have been carefully placed to balance the dual demands of the golfer and the environment, with indigenous planting throughout creating a beautiful backdrop and some challenging obstacles. The golf course requires careful thought along the 5862 metres (6411) yards from the back tees and requires a deft touch on the short game. Bunkers guard most greens while the greens themselves are large and undulating, demanding a soft hand with the putter. Espiche Golf course in Lagos is a shotmaker’s course, where each hole poses a new challenge thanks to the variety of the layout. The par five 1st, dropping some 80 feet from the tee before rising back to the same height at the green, gives golfers an insight into the style of golf at Espiche Golf course. The 3rd

provides the sternest test on the front nine at 409 meters uphill all the way, before the short 7th and 8th offer birdie opportunities. The par five 10th is one of the finest in all the Algarve golf courses, and challenges golfers to negotiate the progressively tighter fairway as they approach the green. Golfers are pushed to take risks with their game at Espiche Golf course, with rich rewards for those who make the most of their golfing skills and who best judge the course. The three founding members were visionary entrepreneurs who visited the Algarve over 20 years ago to look at investment opportunities. When they saw the site at Bago de Uva
they instantly envisaged the opportunity to create a course that would be one of its kind in Portugal, a naturally landscaped course nestled into the landscape. They took their concept to South African golf course architect Peter Sauerman who designed the course and with the backing and support of a small group of investors and a devoted handful of builders, their lovingly built and landscaped the design to sympathetically integrate into the surrounding scenery. Today, Espiche Golf is a sustainable golf course in Faro District, and this place is a reference of golf in Portugal for many tourists and locals. Their dream is now a reality for you to enjoy.
From Lagos, follow the signs to Vila do Bispo/Sagres. At the next roundabout, turn right into Espiche. PALMARES GOLF Many keen golfers will have found memories of the ‘old’ Palmares, one of the first golf courses to be built in the Algarve in the 1970’s by Frank Pennink. But come and play the new Palmares Golf and you will be blown away by the transformation.
Whereas the old course had wonderful sea views from just the first and seventeenth tees, the new Palmares Golf has stunning sea views from 90 per cent of the tees! The course has been totally transformed by the leasing American golf course designer, Robert Trent Jones Jr and no hole from the old course remains as it was. Now the course is a mixture of parkland and authentic links - something unique in the Algarve. The higher part of the course features unforgettable views of the Ocean and Alvor estuary. The lower holes near the beach incorporate links dunes and long grasses and the sound of the sea. Few other courses in the Algarve offer you the chance to get so close to the ocean with your golf clubs! Palmares Golf was recently considered the 23rd golf course in Continental Europe, and for 7 consecutive years was elected the best golf course in Portugal

PALMARES OCEAN LIVING & GOLF 8600-250 Odiaxere, Lagos, Portugal Contact Telephone: +351 282 790 500 golf@palmaresresort.com www.palmaresliving.com Social Media The Alvor Course (Holes 1-9) Located primarily on the northern part of the site, the Alvor Course has a parkland character with mature trees and lovely views of the Monchique hills. Changes in elevation are integral to the design of this nine as a majority of the golf holes ascend hillsides or descend through intimate valleys. The parkland setting disappears briefly with a series of holes with more expansive views. A preview of the dunes and links holes to come is provided in the sixth and seventh holes. As the round concludes, the course again assumes the parkland character. The Lagos Course (Holes 10-18) The Lagos Course begins with the same parkland character. This course incorporates the only two lakes found on the entire site at the short par-3 third hole and the long par-4 sixth hole. Holes seven and eight immerse golfers into the expansive dune lands on the southwestern portion of the site. The round concludes with a climb to the clubhouse and back into a more parkland setting. The Praia Course (Holes 19-27) The third nine at Palmares presents the golf experience every great designer dreams of having the privilege to create: a seaside landscape with dunes exposed to the elements. The four seaside holes are between the beach and the railway line. The course opens by descending from a parkland setting. The second hole then whisks golfers into the true links part of the course. This dunes character is continued through the remainder of the Praia Golf Course with the closing hole, a strong uphill par-5, rising up out of the dunes through a deep valley to an amphitheatre just below the clubhouse.
Clubhouse After the redesign of the golf course, Palmares Ocean Living & Golf has seen a truly significant addition to its already prestigious resort, with a new and amazing Clubhouse designed by RCR Arquitectes, winners of the prestigious Pritzker Architecture Award. The new state-of-the-art Clubhouse embraces the ocean, providing stunning, more than 180º ocean views from the Alvor Estuary, the Meia-Praia and Ponta da Piedade in Lagos. Combining exceptional design with comfort and high-quality finishes, the attention to detail is present throughout the facilities. F&B Facilities Lounge Bar & Restaurant area: Modern yet cosy atmosphere that invites you to enjoy the views whilst enjoying a meal or simply a drink. Fine dining area: The vision, from the start, included the possibility to offer a unique gastronomy experience using local products and promoting what the Algarve has to offer, and even more special is to enjoy that overlooking the ocean. The fine dining will be up and running from early 2021. Groups and events area: We know it is important to welcome larger groups, but we wanted them to have the same experience, the same breathtaking views, the same standard of service. It will host up to 140 pax and will make your event (golfers or nongolfers) even more special. Terrace: With more than 300 sunny days per year, it would not be logical if the project did not include a proper space to welcome vitamin D. That is why the clubhouse terrace follows the width of the facilities, more than 50m wide, leaving you with the choice to enjoy the east or west views, all of them stunning.

PENINA The first 18 hole course of its kind to be built in the Algarve, the Sir Henry Cotton Championship Course started a golfing movement that is, today, famous the world over. Designed and completed in 1966 by the great Sir Henry Cotton, the course stands as a shining example to golfing architecture and one man’s passion for the great game of golf.
Whether the former championship golfer had any inkling of the mark he was laying down when he first began implementing his vision upon the Algarve paddy fields from which his course sprung, we don’t know... what we do know is the staggering extent of the legacy that he created. A Stunning Transformation in the Southern Algarve First he introduced thousands of trees and shrubs, completely transforming the landscape into a vegetation rich, lush land, perfect for playing the game of golf. From this initial build, there quickly sprang another 30 courses across the region... with plenty more to come. As the towering pines and eucalyptus trees reached maturity, the course was given a definitive character that remains unmatched across the entire penipnsular of the Algarve.

Sir Henry Cotton: The Man Behind the Vision Sir Henry Cotton was a three times British Open Champion, even winning the competition with an extraordinary 65 in 1934 - which resulted in Dunlop honouring him with his own ball... the ‘65’. Most at home in the Algarve, with the great all year round climate - particularly during Autumn and Winter when many of the UK courses were slightly inclement to say the least, Sir Henry was determined to follow his vision of creating a world of year-round golf... and golfers the world over are mighty pleased that he did. The Course Today A major revitalisation project has recently completely transformed both the hotel and the golf course. Prestigious events such as the Daily Telegraph Seniors’ Match Play event (2001), the National Finals of the Audi Corp, together with major international and charity competitions - such as the Sir Henry Cotton Charity Classic - together with the Portuguese Open (1998 / 1999/ 2000 / 2004 / 2006) have all been hosted at the course. Unusual Characteristics of a World Famous Course The course itself is characterised by an unusual grouping of Par 5s, with four of the
five arranged together in pairs in the beginning and end of the back nine - producing a Par 38 as opposed to 35. As you turn home towards the 18th, the magnificent building of the hotel acts as a backdrop to the green and is framed by an amphitheatre of trees - a superb spectator setting. Drive short of the drainage ditch, position the second shot to avoid the bunkers guarding the putting surface... and take into account the pin position on one of the three tiers - and you could well finish with a highly commendable par. Of the Par 3s, the most memorable is the 13th - voted one of the best 500 holes in the world. A lake borders the right-hand side, coming into play off the back tee, whilst the sloping green is guarded to the front and left by a pair of dangerous bunkers... great fun and a great challenge.

“The land at Amendoeira is dramatic and the project has the potential to be a real talking point in the Algarve. With so many courses in the region, that’s no mean feat”, pointed out Nick Faldo, during his visit in 2007. In a modern twist of a traditional recipe, cacti and wild herbs replace the role of Sunningdale’s heather, spartan Holm oaks
and ancient olive trees take the place of a lush English woodland, and desert scrub bunkers of crushed limestone replace Berkshire’s sandy tracts in a golf course that revels in the classic principles of strategic play. Faldo Course won, in 2016, the title of Portugal’s Best Golf Course, given by World Golf Awards.

Its various water features, both lakes and watercourses that are spread throughout the entire course, demand accuracy and test from all golfers, and the rich topsoil has been skillfully landscaped and planted with mature palm trees, affording a lush, ornamental setting like an extensive oasis.
This course has tees that are generally connected to the fairways, but its greater overall distance, the water hazards and big greens provide its challenge. Golfers must also be prepared to read the subtly contoured putting surfaces that are strong features.

SALGADOS GOLF COURSE Salgados Golf Course, situated in one of the best-known regions of the Algarve, between Albufeira and Armação de Pêra, is already a ‘postcard’ of Portugual golf courses. At the first lights, turn right. The course is about 1 Km further on the left side. Salgados Golf course opened in September 1994 and is situated near the extensive Galé Beach between Pera and albufeira. The low lying wetlands of the landscape have been skilfully used in the layout wich incorporates 14 water hazards. To compensate for the dauting water hazards, Salgados has been designed to have only semi-rough for general play and the overall lenght has been restricted to 6140 metres from the championship tees. It is a conventional par 72 course wich four par 3 holes and four par 5 holes. The first nine are laid out in a roughly anti-clokwise loop starting and ending close to the clubhouse. One of the toughest holes is the 415 metre par 4 7th, which runs along the sea-side of the
course with a narrow Fairway between large dunes. Among the back nine, only yhe 180 metre par 3 17th is devoid of water hazards, but on five of the remaining holes players will be able to sacrífice distance for accuracy off the tee and still have opportunities to score pars. The exceptions are the 390 metre par 4 10th, and the unusual sequence of two links-type par 5s – the 14th which measures 490 metres and the 15th at 545 metres. These presente a tough testo f golfing ability before the relatively benign three hole home stretch. Traditional Bermuda Tifton 419 grass has been used for the fairways, Rye grass for the semirough, Pencross for the greens and Penneagle for the Tees.

While many modern-day developments tend to focus on length, Welling and McGinley were keen to design a golfing experience where accuracy and course management are the key factors, and a course that is playable and fun for golfers of all abilities. All the greens, tees, bunkers, irrigation and drainage systems and cart paths have been re-built using innovative technology. Four sets of tees have been introduced on each hole to accommodate players of all levels. Golfers are challenged by a combination of undulating
greens, well-positioned bunkers and water hazards. A low-cut Bermuda grass approach has been introduced around greens to create recovery shot options, therefore encouraging all levels of play. Through the introduction of seasonal rough grass and the planting of specimen trees, the aesthetics and environmental impact of the par-72 course has significantly improved. The renovation has allowed for water recycling, solar energy while the grassy areas will encourage new ecosystems.

SAN LORENZO The San Lorenzo Golf Course was opened in 1988 and takes advantage of wonderful topography on the Quinta do Lago estate, winding its way gently over undulating pine woodland. The 18 holes lie in the unspoilt South east corner of Quinta do Lago, bordering the Ria Formosa Estuary and salt water lagoons.
The course was designed by the American golf architect Joseph Lee and the beautiful Bermuda grass fairways provide perfect playing conditions. The San Lorenzo Golf Course is laid out in a figure of eight and at the heart lies the San Lorenzo Clubhouse with a golf pro shop; comfortable changing facilities; welcoming bar and restaurant. The fifth, the shortest hole on the San Lorenzo Golf Course, open up a magnificent vista with the backdrop of golden beaches and the Atlantic Ocean. Drama begins to unfold at the sixth hole where the San Lorenzo Golf Course borders the estuary and great demands are put on accuracy. The eighth hole turns inland and is without a doubt one of the most spectacular par 5s, bordering the largest of the inland lakes and forcing the third shot to carry water to a tight

It is difficult to describe the breathtaking finale that awaits you at the eighteenth hole. BENAMOR GOLF Benamor Golf is a superb 18 hole Golf Course located on the South of Portugal, Algarve, just a few kilometres east of the ancient city of Tavira. In the nearby foothills of Barrocal, you will enjoy some of the best mountain and sea views the Algarve has to offer. But maybe most enjoyable of all, are the peaceful surroundings of a construction free resort. Possibly the only one on the Algarve.
The decision to build a golf course, on the land of Quinta de Benamor, in Tavira, Algarve, was made in 1986. The Owning Martins Dias family invited the late Sir Henry Cotton to make a concept design for an 18-hole course. Sir Henry Cotton was inspired by the beautiful old church next to the site of the Clubhouse and by the spectacular location. The final result is a delightful par 71 golf course of 5,500 metres (6,100 yards), which offers a pleasant playing experience, to players of all standards. The course is undulating but not hilly. The views of the mountains to the North and the Atlantic Ocean to the South are stunning. The indigenous olive, cork, carob, fig and almond trees, many centuries old, feature aesthetically and in playing terms. Water hazards and sand bunkers are located to test the strategy and striking ability of the player.

Right from the start of the round, you will be able to recognize the work and design of a world renowned Golf Course Architect – Rocky Roquemore. The idea of the architect was to create a challenging golf course, yet maintaining the original natural landscape with thousands of ancient olive and carob trees.
Boasting five lakes dotted within flat terrain, the two sets of 9 holes contain a mixture of par’s trees, fours and fives. One of the most iconic points at Quinta da Ria is the 17th hole, which has a small island on the lake, now a sanctuary of endangered rare birds. Designed by the well-known American Architect – Rocky Roquemore, Quinta de Cima was conceived as the championship course of the golf resort. The opening PAR 5 is a gentle start to the round, but the course will become tougher as the round progresses, with dog-legs to the right and left and undulating greens which are well protected by large sandy bunkers and lakes. There are also several natural creeks running through the course that will also increase its difficulty.
Throughout the course you will find many ancient carob and olive trees, which adds a certain character to the layout. The natural beauty and the challenging features of this golf course will make you return time and time again.

CASTRO MARIM Castro Marim occupies an elevated position, with magnificent views to the north, towards the ridge of hills which separates the Algarve from the province of the Alentejo. To the east, the mighty Guadiana forms the border with neighboring Spain, while the shimmering Atlantic may be seen to the south.
Three nine hole loops - designed by Terry Murray - ‘The Grouse’, ‘The Atlantic’ and ‘The Guadiana’ - comprise this attractive Golf & Country Club resort in the eastern Algarve, providing golfers with the enviable choice of playing either of two,18-hole combinations. In all three nine hole loops the Tees are in bermuda & cool season mixture, fairways in bermuda and the greens in Penn A4. All three nine’s share the same, basic characteristics, dictated by the terrain they occupy, epitomizing the often-quoted description “following the contours of the land”... While the holes of the original course wind their way through pine-clad hillsides, where ball placement is paramount, those of the subsequent nine ‘The Grouse’ - bring with them a greater sense of space, since the land is somewhat less wooded.

RIBAGOLFE OAKS A shorter test than its sibling Ribagolfe I, but still measuring more than 6,800 yards, Ribagolfe II was designed by former Ryder Cup player Michael King in collaboration with European Tour Design and opened in 2004. Blessed with the same indigenous cork oak canvas, King has crafted a more forgiving but equally appealing golf course with wider fairways and landing areas.
The huge, moderately contoured greens, however, provide a stiff test if you’re to score well here. Both Ribagolfe courses are set within a forest of cork oak trees and the design makes full use of the sweeping undulations of the site, providing many spectacular golf holes across valleys and lakes. Since its opening, Troia has established itself among Europe’s elite courses and hosted a number of prestigious national and international tournaments, including the Portuguese Open in 1983. with its variety of challenging and enjoyable holes, make it one of Portugal’s finest courses. Surrounded by wildlife and nature in the heart of Sado Estuary Nature Reserve, the course plays to 6,908 yards along the coast and requires a multitude of shots, making it a stern test for golfers of all abilities. Two holes that stand out are the third and 18th, with the par-four third hole being considered by Trent Jones Senior as one of the best he’s ever designed - including it in his ideal 18-hole golf course. The hole blends seamlessly with the landscape and has breathtaking views throughout. Hole 18 is a par-five left dogleg with an elevated green protected by three front bunkers.

ESTELA GOLF CLUB Founded in 1988, the exclusive Estela Golf Course is a true links and one of the most beautiful and great golf challenges in Europe.
Located in a magnificent area along 3 km of beaches facing the Atlantic Ocean, just 20 minutes north of Porto, it has the honor of being host of the Portuguese Open as well as numerous international Amateur Championships. Elected for two times Club of the year, it has first class commodities and a climate cooled by the Atlantic breeze in summer and warmed by the Gulf Stream in winter. Notwithstanding its magnificent beauty and unique ocean views, playing in Estela Golf can, however, be more than just a simple round of golf: its fairways are surrounded by untouched and virgin dunes which contribute to the constant presence of the nature. The 19th hole gives a warm welcome to the players with its outstanding ocean view from the bar and restaurant.

Take the A3 highway towards Braga, A7 towards Guimarães, enter in the A24 highway toward Chaves. The Vidago Palace Hotel Golf Course is a course of striking contrasts, all with a particular respect for the natural surroundings. Distinctive features of this course include the support walls of all the tees, which are made of local stone, and the century-old trees, almost all of which have been preserved. The first four holes, played within the Centenary Park of the Vidago Palace Hotel, anticipate the next 11, newly built in the Oura valley. The last three are played in the upper part of the Centenary Park, and afford
magnificent views to the neighboring hills and villages. Every hole is a challenge and each of the last nine is completely different from the one before, giving golfers the opportunity to deploy their full range of shots. The comprehensive nature of the Vidago Palace offering has been demonstrated by it hosting the Portuguese Senior Open in 2014 – part of the European Senior Tour – as well the Bonallack and Patsy Hankins Trophies in 2016, the international amateur match between Europe and Asia- Pacific.
