Gò0dNews from the Pastor’s Desk

Arrows and Arks n his book, The Last Christian Generation, Josh McDowell opened with the sentence, “I sincerely believe unless something is done now to change the spiritual state of our young people—you [parents] will become the last Christian generation!” Most might consider such a brash statement as hyperbole and fear-mongering, the kind of exaggeration broadcasted to sell a book. But McDowell’s concern may not be unwarranted. Pollster George Barna administered twenty-five separate surveys of more than 22,000 adults and 2,000 teenagers—Christian kids. Some of the results were as follows: 20% had maintained a level of spiritual activity consistent with their HS experience and 58% who attended church every week did not attend church at all by age twenty-nine. As I have spoken in churches around the country, I have asked a show of hands of how many in the congregation had prodigal children. My anecdotal observation was that, consistently, two-thirds of those parents in the pews raised their hands. Christian parents face a formidable challenge from a society and culture that has grown increasingly hostile to the faith. OneHope, a Christian research and resource ministry based in Miami, FL, conducted the largest worldwide study of Gen Z. Surprisingly, the responses remained consistent across national and cultural boundaries. It is well known that only 7% of Gen Z-ers attend church. OneHope uncovered other startling statistics like: one out of four in this generation have thought about having a same-sex relationship in the last three months and one out of fourteen have considered suicide in the last three months. A recent Gallup poll indicated that 16% of the Gen Z generation identify as something other than heterosexual. This is up from 2-3% in the previous generation. If you can do the math, that is one out of eight young people. However you measure or observe, this generation is in crisis and statistics are telling us that our children are being swept out of the church. In their book, Sticky Faith, Dr. Kara Powell and Dr. Chap Clark make this startling statement: “If you raise your kids the way you were raised, you’ll lose them in today’s world. They won’t survive with the belief system you and I were raised with.”

6 // August 2021

Earlier this year, as I was having my quiet time with the Lord, God arrested my attention with this verse in Hebrews 11:7, “By faith Noah, when warned about things not yet seen, in holy fear built an ark to save his family.” A still small voice in my heart asked me this question, “What kind of ark are you building for your family?” The ark was an instrument of preservation and salvation. My response to that question began a journey of prayer and research with my daughter and others who joined with me to develop a curriculum to equip parents to disciple their children. Somewhere along the road of Church history,

Christian parents outsourced the responsibility of discipling our children to the experts—children’s pastors, youth ministers, Sunday-school teachers, and a host of para-church organizations. They have tirelessly worked to accomplish a task they were not called or designed to fulfill. We applaud these efforts, but Christian families must come to grips with the crisis at hand. They must determine what kind of ark they will build for their families and step into their God-given role to disciple their children and prepare them to engage this decaying culture. An old leadership adage I have often quoted over the years applies well here: “It is easy to predict rain. It is harder to build arks.” It is time to build arks for our children.

David’s Adventures

T

by Sandra Gilmore

here once was a boy with some sheep, Some rams, and lambs, and ewes. He tended them tenderly night and day. He did all that he could do. Later, he was a boy with a basket, His father told him to carry, To take it to his brothers at the battle site “Go right away, don’t tarry.” With basket in hand, (full of cheese and bread) He was on a mission. He obeyed his dad and left right away, Even though he could have gone fishin’!

Now, he was a boy with a sling, Five smooth stones in his pouch. He remembered when he slayed the lion and the bear. He braced himself to give the giant a big ouch! He put the sling in motion, It whirled and twirled above his head, The giant kept on taunting, But he should have stood in dread! David’s stones launched airborne. Traveling with great speed, The troops and the crowd were motionless, For nobody believed: This boy with the sheep and the basket Could impact such a great scene, A standoff between a giant and a whole army But God intervened!

8 // August 2021

The stone met its target, right on time. It was forceful and it hurt. The giant stopped teasing and taunting, When his face timbered to meet the dirt! Are you just a boy (or girl) with a basket? A child without a mission? Obey the Lord, and do your tasks, Even if you would rather be fishin’! For as you go, the Lord will go with you. From sunrise to sunset He is your constant companion. The best friend you’ve ever met! You might think your days are boring, Bland, without treat or treasure. Remember David with his basket of cheese, And you, too, can find adventure!

About The Author

He delivered the basket and found a surprise. A giant was taunting the troops! The army was hiding and covering their ears. While the giant whistled and whooped!

Want Accountability? Tell Everybody MONEY MATTERS

WITH DR. ANDREW LEE Dr. Andrew Lee is professor of English at Lee University. He also serves as a coordinator for Dave Ramsey’s Financial Peace University. He and his wife Esmerelda have three children.

I

’ll tell you a secret: I’ve been using the Noom weight loss system for a few months now and have dropped nearly twenty pounds so far (glory to God). Countless experts say it’s critical to share your goals with others to keep yourself accountable and to stay motivated, so here’s hoping they’re right! No matter your goals, by sharing them online or in person with friends and family, you are more likely to be held accountable and to meet your goals. The psychology behind this should be obvious. Once you speak (or type) your goals and intentions into existence, they instantly become “real” by being heard and acknowledged by others who will usually offer encouragement and support to spur you on toward fulfilling your goals and following through on your intentions. More importantly, we now feel the pressure much more intensely to continue moving toward success in order not to look like a failure or quitter in the eyes of those who are watching to see whether we were determined and disciplined enough to do what we said we would do. Let’s apply these ideas to financial goals. If one of your goals is to reduce debts and save money for emergencies, you would be wise to share these goals with people whom you believe would support you in your efforts. Use wisdom here, and perhaps avoid sharing your goals with those whose financial habits are worse than yours since they may end up trying to discourage or mock your plans. Furthermore, get comfortable telling family and friends so they can expect to see changes in your spending and saving habits. For example, if you’re invited to dinner at an expensive restaurant that will jeopardize your monthly financial goals, you might instead offer to meet up with your

10 // August 2021

friend group later that evening after dinner for board games or karaoke. If these people are really your friends, they will respect your financial discipline and understand that your goals are a priority. By sharing your goals aloud, your friends can encourage you and be understanding in these types of situations. Sharing goals with others can also lead to pleasant surprises. For instance, most of us are aware of the “hot” real estate market we are currently experiencing. If you are trying to buy or sell a home right now, it would certainly help to share your goals with numerous people. You never know whether someone may know someone who is looking to buy or sell a home, which may lead to you realizing your goal. But if you keep your goals to yourself, people can’t help you. So, what stops us from telling others about our goals and plans and dreams? I think it usually comes down to fear—fear of being told our goals are unachievable and unrealistic or unimportant; fear of failing to reach our goals and having everyone think of us as a loser or a quitter or a hopeless dreamer. Ironically, one of the reasons we might choose to keep our goals to ourselves is precisely because we fear some of our friends and family might actually encourage us and offer to help us, which means we now must get “serious” and actually put forth extra effort and dedication to reach these goals (when in reality, we may have been planning subconsciously to quit pursuing this goal after yet another half-hearted effort). Proverbs 13:12 tells us, “Hope deferred makes the heart sick, but a longing fulfilled is a tree of life.” Start sharing your goals and dreams with others. The longer you wait, the longer your hope may be deferred.

to pick a side. Jesus warns us not to judge one another and to “love one another.” In John 13:34, Jesus said, “A new commandment I give to you, that is to love one another as I have loved you.” Jesus also said, “the world will know you are my disciples by the love you show one for another” (John 13:35). Jesus was speaking at a time when there was tremendous judgement of people because of their heritage. Jesus shares with us the story of the Good Samaritan. To some in that day, the term “Good Samaritan” would have been heresy. Samaritans were considered ritually unclean. They had intermarried with non-Jews and some had honored foreign gods. Jesus used examples of the day to demonstrate love, forgiveness and restoration. It is

Finding The Truth here is a new trendy saying that is going around these days, dropped into conversations when people are trying to give what they think is good advice. It goes something like this: “You just need to find and speak your own truth.” I am not sure who started this saying, or what religion it comes out of, but it is not the Holy Word of God. The fact is that none of our truth is the truth. All human beings have their own perspectives, born out of their life experiences and varied personalities. We rationalize our situations to make us feel better about ourselves, whether it be overspending, overeating, or overindulging in…you fill in the blank. Let’s face it, we do not like to feel guilty. If we do feel guilty, chances are our actions are in the wrong. The Bible says wrong doing is called sin. God says, “Be holy, for I am Holy” (1 Peter 1:16). My husband has had many jobs in his life—one being a builder. Builders know how to make something straight or plumb, especially when it comes to laying a foundation for a house. It must be plumb or the whole house will be crooked. In Isaiah 28:17, God says, “And I will make justice the measuring line and righteousness the plumb line.” 18 // August 2021

In other words, God and His Word is our plumb line, or the standard of measurement that we must align ourselves with. The plumb line never changes, just as He never changes. “He is the same yesterday, today, and forever” (Hebrews 13:8). God does not change His nature or go back on His Word because of circumstances or passing trends. When we step away from that standard, we disobey His Word. “For all have sinned and fall short of the glory of God” (Romans 3:23). Thankfully, His grace covers us as Christians. He paid the penalty for our sins and He gives us His grace freely— we only have to ask. John 14:6 sums it up for us, “Jesus answered, I am the way and the truth and the life. No one comes to the Father except through me.” While we may want to make our truth the truth by rationalizing the situation we are in, we must realize that His truth is untainted and does not change over time or according to circumstances. His truth is the whole truth and nothing but the truth!

desires, failures and accomplishments. One cluttered shed!” There were books stacked on top of themselves on one shelf. There were thirty to forty of them. I found this amazing because Grandpa could not read. So, why so many books? He replied, “Even though I cannot read writing, I can read pictures. They give me an ideal of how to do my work.” “The memory of the just is blessed: but the name of the wicked shall rot” (Proverbs 10:7). Sitting nearby was an old 1930s tube radio that no longer worked. I asked him why he kept it. He replied that it was to remind him of what he had heard. By listening to old farm radio shows, it provided him with ideas of how to work the fields better. “A wise man will hear, and will increase learning; and a man of understanding shall attain unto wise counsels” (Psalm 1:5). There were about twenty-five old empty candy dishes on a secluded shelf. I had to know why he kept them. He said it was to remind him of the sweet words spoken in his life. “How sweet are thy words unto my taste! Yea, sweeter than honey to my mouth!” (Psalms 119:103) There was an old water bucket nearby the shelves. It was full, not of water, but of digging tools—shovels, hoes, picks, and even a post hole digger. All in one bucket. Nearby the bucket was a full set of canning jars full of nuts, bolts, washers, and screws. The rest of the shed was full of farming

is right, only to find out later that they were confusing and nothing but clutter to our joy and happiness. Without God at the center of one’s life, it can become confused and cluttered. “And he said to them, take care, and be on your guard against all covetousness, for one's life does not consist in the abundance of his possessions” (Luke 12:15). Grandpa and I spent all day cleaning and rearranging that old shed. Now everything had a place and was in its place—neat and orderly. Life's walk is not to be in clutter and confusion. “The steps of a good man are ordered by the LORD: and he delighteth in his way” (Psalms 37:23). Is it time to clean out your shed?

is not easy or very popular in this day and age. We get ridiculed and belittled for any reason, yet we are still lucky to live in American where at least we are not killed for our faith. A lot of times, the devil uses this sense of unbelonging to tempt us into sin—simply to fit in. That sin does not always have to be an action, but even by believing the lies this world tries to present as “truth,” we are against our Lord. It can be hard to see and to trust the Lord’s plans in these times, but we have to remember that His plan for us is not to fit in. We are to be a peculiar people (1 Peter 2:9), the salt of the Earth (Matthew 5:13), and are called to “…not be conformed to this world but to be transformed by the renewing of our minds…” (Romans 12:2).

sick and then died. When Jesus arrived at Judea, Lazarus had been in the tomb for four days. Jesus talked to Lazarus’ sisters, Martha and Mary, and He was greatly moved. “When Jesus saw her weeping, and the Jews who had come along with her also weeping, he was deeply moved in spirit and troubled. ‘Where have you laid him?’ he asked. ‘Come and see, Lord,’ they replied. Jesus wept” (John 11:33-35). While there is a lot that we could learn about in this story, there are a couple of things that I want to specifically focus on. First of all, in this passage we read that Jesus was greatly moved by the death of his dear friend and in Verse 35, it says that “Jesus wept.” What this tells me is that Jesus felt the pain, sorrow, and sadness that Mary and Martha felt. Just in Bradley County we have seen average sales price increase from $159,573 in 2015 to $226,760 in 2020. 2021 has brought incredible price increases in every market. That is where Tonya comes in to make sure that you are taken care of properly. With the exponential growth that Tonya has seen in her business, it was necessary that she expand and hire an assistant. In 2018, she hired Josh Brewer, a licensed Realtor with the State of Tennessee, to be her Licensed Real Estate grandmother—one morning and she suggested that Tonya should get her real estate license, since she was wanting to sell her house. Her grandmother believed Tonya would truly be successful at helping other people because that was always her heart from a young age. When Tonya called the

By the next day, she had signed up for the real estate school and it felt like a whirlwind. After passing the Tennessee State Exam, she called her friend, Julie Merriman, who was the Market Center Administrator at Keller Williams Cleveland. Julie guided her every step of the way. Keller Williams Cleveland always ranks #1 in the River Counties Multiple Listing Service and Tonya wanted to make sure she surrounded herself with lots of training by true professionals. When she was told their motto was God, Family, and Business, she knew she had found the business model of success. She had a meeting with their Team Leader and signed up. In her first year at Keller Williams Cleveland, Tonya was awarded Rookie of the Year. By 2018, she was invited to join the Agent Leadership Council as part of the top 20% of the office. In the last four years, Tonya has been blessed to have successfully served over 265 families, totaling over $66 million dollars in transaction volume—these have ranged from small lots of land, to luxury and commercial properties. With these great achievements, Tonya earned a spot in the Top 100 Agents for Keller Williams Southeast Region, which has over 14,000 individual agents. Jesus showed the disciples that He has the power to calm the raging seas. The disciples were scared out of their wits and thought they were going to die. At first, they thought Jesus did not care for them because he was resting in the front of the boat. They came to Him, and with just three words, the storm was gone. Following this, Jesus talked to them about their lack of faith. They did not do well on this test, but Jesus took care of it and kept working on them. Although James did not see this miracle, he and the other apostles, would witness the Resurrection and Ascension which helped them have unwavering faith. The environment is cursed, tension-filled, and food more challenging to come by. In the end, death will take them to their graves. If only they had listened. Life now is less than God's garden design. Echoing the judgments and characterizing human existence is pain (hard work, regardless of industry; 3:17), power (relationship tensions, reaching international levels; 3:16), and the insatiable pursuit of greed (distorting use of gold & precious resources; 2:12). Esteeming commodities (“...gold that is good”) of greater import than God's Word cheapens them. Adding to God’s Word

I

by Eddie Turner

n the very last chapter of the Bible, God warns us of the severe consequences associated with “adding” to His Word. “I testify to everyone who hears the words of the prophecy of this book: if anyone adds to them, God will add to him the plagues that are written in this book” (Revelation 22:18). This is a warning that has been heeded over and over during the extremely delicate process of producing new Bible translations. The production of the New International Version (NIV) translation, for example, involved over 100 biblical scholars—each dedicated to maintaining the highest degree of accuracy in their revisions. The text was then meticulously reviewed by the Committee on Bible Translation (CBT), a team of fifteen biblical scholars whose approval ensured that the work was free from agenda, bias, and outside influences. Further updates to the text required the partnership of these same groups of scholars. Needless to say, the malicious adding of text to the Bible just does not happen. So, how are we able to add to God’s Word? We do this when we purposefully skew the teaching of the Bible to suit our own desires. While the text does not change, the context in which we share God’s Word gets twisted quite frequently. For instance, concerning the topic of homosexuality, God’s regard to this lifestyle was made very clear in the Old Testament. Jesus, however, is often labeled as having progressed from that mindset and is believed to have been more accepting of the practice. While there are indeed many passages in the New Testament that assure us that this is not the case, omitting them to demonstrate how the Bible actually embraces homosexuality, or any sin for that matter, represents an effort to add to the Bible. My usage of homosexuality in this example is not to set it apart as some mega-sin. In fact, it is looked upon by God with the same aversion as the lies that you and I have told. Here is another example. During my research for this article, I came across a column written by an individual who taught that Jesus was prone to making the same mistakes we do. The author’s argument included Jesus being fully human as well as his “confession of ignorance” (per the author) about when he would be returning to the earth. So,

32 // August 2021

why was it so important that the author make this case? After reading the entire article, I concluded that this person wanted others to adopt the belief that the Bible carries no weight in its defining of right and wrong. As Christians, we are given the task of painting an accurate picture of God for others. You might even say that we serve as book covers for the Bible, which proves itself over and over to be His perfect and flawless instruction for our lives.

Bear in mind that a simple claim contrary to the Bible’s teaching is not necessarily adding to God’s Word. It is when we put our words in God’s mouth that we are adding to His. As we progress toward our day of redemption, we can only expect to see more and more false teaching with the potential to lead God’s precious children astray. Until that day comes, may we continue to focus upon adding to the number of those who will join us into eternity. This number has already been set, of course. It simply has not been reached. How do we know this? Because we are still here.
