a cultura maya es considerada como una de las más importantes a nivel mundial por su extensa aportación y conocimiento sobre la astronomía, las matemáticas, la agricultura, la arquitectura y la medicina, entre otras ciencias. Asimismo se caracteriza por sus extraordinarias tradiciones y costumbres llenas de misticismo y valores simbólicos, que incluso algunas de ellas han logrado permanecer con el paso de los años. Esta civilización antigua dejó su legado a través de grandes ciudades mayas y edificios ceremoniales, políticos y sociales que hasta hoy permanecen en pie, y los cuales guardan una valiosa información en sus muros grabados con mensajes de diversos temas, así como profecías que han logrado influir en el acontecer. Incluso su sistema de escritura es considerado como uno de los más completos de todos los pueblos indígenas americanos. Su religión se basaba en diferentes y múltiples dioses a los cuales les pedían sobre la vida, la salud y el sustento a cambio de ofrendas, ceremonias y sacrificios arrojando a mujeres, niños y tesoros a los cenotes que consideraban sagrados. Por otro lado, su gran talento artístico se ve reflejado en cada objeto y pieza hallada en lo que ahora conocemos como los sitios arqueológicos; en donde podemos encontrar maravillosas obras de arte, desde artilugios de cocina hasta grandes murales. Actualmente, la civilización maya ha evolucionado a grandes rasgos pero logrando mantener esa esencia tan única y especial de su pasado, convirtiéndose en unos verdaderos defensores de su cultura y cosmovisión. aya Culture is regarded as one of the most important in the world because of its extensive contribution to and knowledge of astronomy, mathematics, agriculture, architecture, medicine, and other sciences. This ancient civilization left its legacy through great Maya cities and ceremonial centers, political and social structures that remain standing to the present day. These structures preserve valuable information engraved on their walls which record writings on various topics, as well as prophecies that have been able to influence current events. Even their writing system is considered one of the most complete one of all the First Peoples in the Americas. Their religion was based on different and multiple deities to which they prayed asking for life, health, and livelihoods in exchange for offerings, ceremonies which included human sacrifice.This consisted of throwing women, children and treasures into the cenotes, natural sink holes, which they considered sacred. On the other hand, their great artistic talent is reflected in each object and piece found in what are now known as the archaeological sites.These contain wonderful works of art, from kitchen gadgets to large murals. At present, the Maya civilization incorporates much of modern life but manages to keep its essence as unique and special in its past, becoming a society that lives in the present while defending its traditional culture and worldview.

Ateneo de Yucatán (MACAY), (antes Palacio Episcopal), edificio colonial que alberga la colección de arte contemporáneo más importante del sureste. Al este, el Palacio Municipal (1736) ostenta el más antiguo escudo de armas de Mérida. Actualmente es sede del H. Ayuntamiento y la Presidencia Municipal. En la esquina de Calle 62 con 61 se ubica el Centro Cultural de Mérida Olimpo (1988), recinto que juega un papel primordial en la vida cultural de la ciudad; alberga al Planetario Arcadio Poveda Ricalde y es sede de exposiciones a lo largo del año. Sobre la Calle 62, el Teatro Armando Manzanero (antes Mérida), es un importante foro cultural con iluminación, decoración y arquitectura de impecable belleza. Ya sobre la Calle 60, se pueden visitar el Parque Hidalgo, la Iglesia de Jesús con sus bellos retablos y tallados; el Teatro Peón Contreras, uno de los mejores del país; el edificio central de la Universidad Autónoma de Yucatan y más adelante, el Parque de Santa Lucía, con efigies de poetas yucatecos y escenario, los jueves, de la tradicional Serenata Yucateca. Finaliza el recorrido en el Parque de Santa Ana con su moderno mercado de comida regional y artesanías. he most popular way to tour the city on foot begins in the PLAZA GRANDE, also known as the ZOCALO, located in the heart of the Historic Center. To the north one finds the GOVERNOR’S PALACE, where the state´s executive offices are located, and where the spectacular

murals by Fernando Castro Pacheco, depicting Yucatan’s history, are housed. To the south one finds CASA MONTEJO (1549), considered one of the most beautiful examples of Plateresque colonial architecture in Mexico. Today, the building houses the regional offices of Banamex Bank, and the MUSEO CASA MONTEJO, which is open to the public, and free of charge. To the west is the CATHEDRAL OF SAN ILDEFONSO (1561), which was the first Cathedral built on the mainland of the American continent. (Only the cathedral in Santo Domingo, Dominican Republic is older.) The Cathedral houses the Christ of the Blisters and the Christ of Unity. Immediately to the south of the Cathedral is the CONTEMPORARY MUSEUM OF MODERN ART (MACAY), which occupies the former Bishop’s Palace. The MACAY houses the most important collection of contemporary art in the region. Finally, to the east is City Hall (1736), which boasts the oldest Coat of Arms in Mérida. It is the current location of municipal mayor’s offices. On the corner of Calle 62 and Calle 61 one finds the OLIMPO CULTURAL CENTER OF MERIDA (1988), a contemporary complex that plays an important role in the city’s cultural life. It houses the ARCADIO POVEDA RICALDE PLANETARIUM and is the site for exhibitions throughout the year.

As you continue your walking tour, head north along Calle 62. The Armando Manzanero Theater (formerly the Mérida Theater), is an important cultural forum, renowned for its period lighting, décor and mid-20th century Art Deco architectural design. Make your way one block east to Calle 60, you will come upon Parque Hidalgo and the Church of Jesus, noted for its beautiful altar pieces and carvings. Head north and you will come upon the PEON CONTRERAS THEATER & OPERA HOUSE, considered one of the finest in the country. Opposite the theater is the main campus of the Autonomous University of Yucatan. One block north is the SANTA LUCIA PARK, decorated with statues commemorating Yucatecan literary figures. On Thursday evenings the traditional Yucatecan Serenade takes place in the park, free of charge. On Sundays, the park is the site of a traditional handicraft and antiques market, along with stalls featuring regional food. A few blocks north, turning right (east) on Calle 47, one finds the beginning of the grand boulevard, PASEO DE MONTEJO. This vast boulevard, modeled on the grand thoroughfares of Europe, always impresses visitors who delight in the splendid mansions, vast lawns and generous treecovered sidewalks. This is the case with CANTON PALACE, which now houses the REGIONAL MUSEUM OF ANTHROPOLOGY & HISTORY, showcasing a grand collection of Maya artifacts within the magnificent architecture of the mansion itself. As you continue to stroll along Paseo de Montejo, you will be able to admire the buildings, mansions and structures which include cafés, restaurants and various shops. At the northern end of the boulevard the MONUMENT TO THE FLAG, a spectacular sculpture carved in the pink stone from the nearby town of Ticul is found. Created by artist Rómulo Rozo, the sculpture tells the history of Mexico. A modern-day extension of the boulevard, called Prolongacion Montejo, or Montejo Extension, is lined with contemporary bars, restaurants and shopping centers, such as the Gran Plaza, the SIGLO XXI CONVENTION CENTER and the GREAT MUSEUM OF THE MAYA WORLD. The boulevard’s extension ends at Plaza Galleries, a shopping center filled with upscale stores, boutique shops and an ice rink, which delights young and old alike. ste festival marcó su inicio durante el año 2012 debido al calendario maya, el cual anunciaba ese año como el final e inicio de un nuevo Baktún, es decir, el inicio de una nueva era para los mayas. Motivo por el cual se realizaron diversos coloquios, simposios, conferencias, presentaciones de libros, conciertos e incluso observaciones astronómicas, con el fin de crear una mejor y más responsable convivencia entre los seres humanos y la naturaleza. De esta manera, el Festival Internacional de la Cultura Maya se convierte no sólo en un momento de celebración, sino en todo un camino de acciones que propician un verdadero

desarrollo de la sociedad y de las diferentes ciencias, como las artes visuales, la literatura, la música, la gastronomía y la ecología, entre otras. Para este 2013, el festival realizado del 17 de octubre al 3 de noviembre, incluirá como tema principal “El Paisaje”, con el firme objetivo de contribuir a la preservación, rescate y defensa de la naturaleza, evitando así el deterioro de cualquier ecosistema y dándonos la oportunidad de poder disfrutar por más tiempo de las maravillosas escenografías y beneficios de la madre tierra.

In 2013, the Festival will be held from October 17 through November 3, and will include as its main theme “The Landscape.”The stated mission is to contribute to the preservation, reclamation and defense of nature, thus preventing the deterioration of any ecosystem and giving us the opportunity to be able to enjoy more time in the wonderful habitats and gifts Mother Nature has bestowed upon us.

as tradiciones y costumbres de Yucatán siempre se han caracterizado por su clara presencia en el acontecer del estado sin importar la zona territorial de la cual se hable, pues la gente aun tiene muy arraigados ciertos ritos y prácticas del pasado. El Hanal Pixán o comida de las ánimas por su significado, es una de estas tradiciones considerada como las más importantes a nivel local e internacional, por a la gran

diversidad de aspectos y acciones que involucra en todo su proceso, desde la confección de los manteles, la limpieza de la casa, la preparación de la comida, hasta la instalación del altar. El propósito de esta costumbre maya es recordar a los amigos y parientes que ya no se encuentran de una manera física, sino que nos acompañan espiritualmente; pues se piensa que durante los días que abarca, es decir del 31 de octubre al 2 de noviembre, las ánimas reciben u n permiso divino para visitar a sus familiares. Lo que más caracteriza al Hanal Pixán, es la colocación del altar, el cual normalmente está constituido por una fotografía del difunto, flores, incienso, una cruz de madera, juguetes en caso de tratarse del alma de un niño, bebidas como el atole, el pozole, agua y el chocolate, así como alimentos típicos de la región y la temporada como el famoso mucbipollo que es una especie de tamal grande cocido bajo la tierra, los dulces de pepita, pan dulce y el xec (una combinación de frutas), entre otros. Sin duda esta es una de las tradiciones con mayor misticismo que muestran a la perfección la religiosidad de la cultura maya.

Hanal Pixán, which means “food from the souls” in Maya, is one of these traditions considered among the most important on a local and international level in Yucatán State. It is renowned for the great diversity in the aspects and rituals involved in all its observance, from the weaving design of the tablecloths, to house cleaning, to food preparation, and the setting up of an altar. The purpose of this Maya custom is to remember friends and relatives who are no longer with us physically, but who remain part of our lives spiritually.The holiday takes place from October 31 through November 2, during which time the souls are granted divine permission to return to earth and visit their relatives. Hanal Pixán, is characterized by the setting up of an altar, which is normally includes a photograph of the deceased, flowers, incense, a wooden cross, toys in the case of the soul of a child, drinks like the atole, pozole, water and chocolate, as well as other regional foods. In Yucatán State, this includes the famous mucbipollo, a seasonal dish that consists a kind of large tamale baked underground, wrapped in banana leaves, and contains sweet pepitas, sweet breads, and xec, among others offerings. Without a doubt, this is one of the traditions with great mysticism associated with it and is a perfect example of the religious beliefs still prevalent in Maya culture.

érida estará el próximo 31 de octubre de nuevo ante los ojos del mundo, al realizarse la edición 2013 del “Paseo de las Ánimas”, evento tradicional y turístico único, que en 2012 congregó a más de 12 mil personas y el cual es organizado por el Ayuntamiento de Mérida. Este año, para mayor disfrute de meridanos y visitantes, el “Paseo de las Ánimas” amplía su derrotero del Cementerio General al Arco de San Juan, éste último conocido como el Antiguo Camino Real que llevaba a Campeche, y contará con una gran variedad de atractivos para el turismo local, nacional e internacional, como ya es tradición, exaltando los valores y costumbres de los meridanos y yucatecos, a partir de las 6 de la tarde. Entre las actividades, además de la exposición de altares de difuntos, típicos de Yucatán, se podrá disfrutar de números musicales, una muestra gastronómica regional, una ceremonia maya, cuentos y leyendas, el ceremonial desfile y vaquería de las ánimas así como representaciones teatrales. Adicionalmente, se efectuarán recorridos guiados dentro del Cementerio General y se podrá disfrutar de los reconocidos músicos locales Los Juglares y Las Maya Internacional. “El Paseo o Corredor de las Ánimas”, se instituyó en 2008 por parte del Ayuntamiento de

Mérida, para que, más allá de sólo la exposición de altares que ya se realizaba de manera tradicional en diversos espacios de Mérida, denominado “Hanal Pixán”, se efectuara un recorrido entre la Iglesia de la Ermita y el Cementerio General, recreando el derrotero que las almas habrían de transitar en esos días. La procesión de las ánimas está conformada por jóvenes y niños ataviados con el traje típico yucateco y caracterizados como difuntos. Así el público disfruta en familia este ceremonial desfile al tiempo que aprecia la exposición de altares tradicionales montados con los elementos básicos que la cultura maya utiliza, como las velas negras o de colores, dulces y bebidas de la región, así como flores y cruces representativas de Yucatán. El derrotero también contará con música ambiental prehispánica y tendrá tres escenarios ubicados en el Cementerio General, la Ermita de Santa Isabel y el Arco de San Juan, en un ambiente donde el colorido se mezclará con la tradición y el respeto hacia las costumbres locales. No pierdas la oportunidad de disfrutar un evento único en el mundo, que se realiza una sola vez al año y el cual, además de mostrar cómo se viven en Mérida las fechas de fieles difuntos, conjugará atractivos eventos artísticos para chicos y grandes.

he eyes of the world will once again be on Mérida on October 31 when the city celebrates the 2013 annual “Paseo of the Souls,” a traditional and unique spectacle that, in 2012, brought more than 12,000 people to this event sponsored by Mérida city government. This year, for greater enjoyment of Meridians and visitors alike, the “Paseo of the Souls” with expand its route to include the General Cemetery at the Arch of San Juan, the latter known as the former Royal Road, or “Camino Real,” that extended the Campeche City. This time the event will include a great variety of attractions for visitors, local, domestic and foreign alike and will, as is tradition, exalting the values and customs of the Meridians and Yucatecans.The event begins at 6 PM. Among the activities included are: Visiting various Day of the Dead altars typical of Yucatán State; and additionally, there will be musical performances, food vendors will offer regional gastronomic dishes, a Maya ceremony will be performed, there will be a recitation of tales and legends, a ceremonial parade including a traditional “Vaquería of the Souls,” or “Rodeo of the Souls,” and, finally, there will be theatrical performances. In addition, there will be guided tours of the General Cemetery and you will enjoy the recognized local musical groups: “Los Juglares” and “Los Maya Internacional.” “The Paseo, or Tour, of the Souls” was launched in 2008 by the City Council of Mérida.The mission is

to, in addition to showcasing the Day of the Dear altars that are raised in several places throughout Mérida consistent with traditions, which are called “Hanal Pixán” in Maya language, is to have a procession from the Church of La Ermita to the General Cemetery, recreating the route that the souls travel during these days. The procession of the Souls is comprised of young people and children dressed in the typical Yucatecan costume that represent the “faithful departed,” meaning the deceased. In consequence, the public, in a familial setting, can enjoy this ceremonial parade that appreciates the opportunity to view traditional altars mounted consistent with the basic elements of Maya culture. This includes the use of candles, black colors, sweets and beverages of the region, as well as flowers and crosses representing Yucatán. The route will also feature traditional pre-Hispanic musical performances and there will be three musical sets located in the General Cemetery, the Ermita de Santa Isabel (“Hermitage of Santa Isabel”), and the Arch of San Juan.This will contribute to the mood, combining a colorful mix of tradition and respect toward the local customs. Do not miss the opportunity to enjoy a unique event in the world, which is performed only once a year and which, in addition to showcasing how life is lived in Mérida during the dates of the commemorating the Days of the Dead, including attractive artistic activities for children and adults.

ste barrio le debe su nombre al templo de Santiago, una de las iglesias más importantes de Mérida edificada en el siglo XVII sobre uno de los primeros pueblos indígenas que los conquistadores encontraron al llegar a Yucatán y que posteriormente lo nombraron como se le conoce hoy en día en honor a un apóstol de España.

Según la leyenda que se encuentra grabada en uno de los arcos de la entrada principal, este tempo se terminó de construir en el año 1637. Asimismo se dice que en su interior fue enterrado el corazón de uno de los primeros Obispos de Yucatán, Fray Luis de Piña y Mazo, quien murió en 1795. Por otra parte en el costado sur del presbítero, donde se supone que estuvo la capilla abierta o conocida también como la capilla de indios, se encuentra una placa de piedra que indica que en ese recinto se celebró la primera misa de la ciudad; por lo que cada año, del 26 de julio al 8 de agosto se celebran los gremios en honor al Santo Cristo de la Transfiguración y en recuerdo a los primeros evangelizadores. Fue con el paso del tiempo que este pueblo fue integrándose como barrio a la ciudad; desde el principio el parque de Santiago ha tenido un am-

biente muy animado, pues a inicios del siglo XX en este lugar se encontraba el Circo Teatro Yucateco; tiempo después fue cuando esta explanada sufrió algunos cambios hasta quedar como la conocemos hoy en día. Actualmente este rincón de la ciudad guarda un gran número de recuerdos que lo dotan de una gran personalidad y ambiente en donde toda la familia puede disfrutar de un gran día, ya sea en las salas del famoso cine Rex (Cinemex), en el tradicional Mercado Santos Degollado, el parque zoológico Centenario, el Museo de Historia Natural, en los comercios tradicionales o en el programa cultural Remembranzas Musicales en donde cada martes turistas y residentes se reúnen para disfrutar de grandes melodías de los viejos tiempos.

his neighborhood owes its name to the Church of Santiago. It is one of the most important churches in Mérida was built in the seventeenth century on the site of one of the first settlements built by Maya that the Spanish encountered when they reached Yucatán. The Church was subsequently christened in honor an apostle of Spain. According to the legend that is inscribed under one of the arches of the main entrance, this temple was completed in the year 1637. It is also said that the heart of one of the first Bishops of Yucatán, Fray Luis de Piña y Mazo, who died in 1795, was buried in the interior of the church. It was with the passage of time that this district was integrated as a suburb to the city: from its inception the park of Santiago has had a very animated atmosphere. In the beginning of the twentieth century it was the seat of the Yucatecan Theater Circus. Subsequently the esplanade was subject to modifications that are what we see today. Currently this corner of the city harbors a large number of histories that give it tremendous character and an atmosphere where the whole family can enjoy a fun day, either in the chambers of the famous cinema Rex (Cinemex), in the traditional Saint Degollado Market with in traditional food stalls and vendors, or in the cultural program “Musical Remembrances” each Tuesday night when tourists and residents alike gather to enjoy great tunes from the old times.

This monument created by the Colombian master Rómulo Rozo was inaugurated by the president of the Republic Adolfo Ruiz Cortines on April 23, 1956. It narrates the history of Mexico and alludes to the maritime origin of the people of the Itzáes. Its 31 columns represent the 28 states of the Republic, 2 territories and the Federal District (that existed at the time; the territories now being states). urante varios siglos testigos han oído la voz de una mujer a lo largo de la Calle 60 en el centro de Mérida, a una cuadra al norte de la catedral. Los mayas atribuyen estas voces y perturbaciones a los seres conocidos como Aloxob, embaucadores o espíritus, que los mayas creen traviesos. La voz es a menudo descrita como muy melodiosa, seductora y encantadora. Se cuenta que Katharine Hepburn oyó esta voz cuando ella estuvo en Mérida en mayo de 1939. En su diario, Hepburn notó que habían oído una melodía de una mujer joven que no recitaba ni en español, ni en inglés, cerca del parque Hidalgo.

En la década de 1950 se celebraron varias ceremonias de purificación en el parque. Un chamán afirma que se contacto con el alma. Ella le contó que, siendo una virgen, había sido sacrificada en lo que corresponde al año 584 C. E. Esta relación siendo publicada en 2013, indica que murió hace aprox. 1,428 años. Es por supuesto fácil descartar esas creencias como algo ridículo. La mayoría de las personas así lo decía hasta diciembre de 2011. or centuries people have heard the voice of a woman along Calle 60 in downtown Mérida, a block north of the cathedral. The Maya attributed the noises and disturbances to the Aloxob trickster sprites or spirits they believe are mischievous. The voice is often described as being melodious, seductive, and enchanting. Katharine Hepburn heard her when she was in Mérida in May 1939. In her journal Miss Hepburn reported hearing a melody coming from a young woman reciting neither Spanish, nor English, in the vicinity of the Park where we strolled through enjoying ice cones. In the 1950s several purification ceremonies were held in the park. One shaman claimed to have made contact with her. She told him she had been a virgin sacrificed in what corresponds to 584 C.E. in our calendar.This account being published in 2013, that would place her death approximately 1,428 years ago. It is, of course, easy to dismiss these claims as ridiculous. Most people have.That is, until December 2011. That was when municipal workers stumbled upon a burial site that predates the arrival of the Spanish. Until then, no one knew that this was the location of an ancient Maya burial site. Had they uncovered the human remains of the Maya Sacrificial Virgin? The discovery of these human remains made news throughout México when it was revealed that human bones were buried beneath the very spot where the seductive incantations of a Maya maiden have called out to the living for hundreds of years. No one has established contact with her. What is known is that the Soul of the Sacrificial Virgin has fallen silent since the burial site was uncovered. Has the desecration of her resting place changed the dynamics of her existence? The respectful and wise relationship of the structures with nature is one reason Maya astronomers continue to use these buildings, particularly the structure known as ‘THE TEMPLE OF THE SEVEN DOLLS,” so named because seven dolls were found inside its chamber. The building, perfectly aligned with the cardinal points. Legend has it that Kin, Maya for the Sun, took possession of the temple through the hollow space of its doors, whose frames give a reverential embrace to the celestial orb. IZAMAL. (city of hills) (500 BC) the priest ZAMNÁ (dew from heaven), founder of the Itza kingdom, invented writing and the oldest Mayan institutions, and founded Izamal, SACRED CITY OF THE MAYA of Yucatan. MANÍ. (Pasó todo lo mejor): Fungió como exclusiva escuela para educar hijos de caciques y principales indígenas. La iglesia de San Miguel con elegante fachada, flanqueada por campanarios, conserva bellos retablos, El Mayor, San Antonio, La Asunción, la Virgen de la Luz, del siglo XVII. Su CAPILLA ABIERTA, primera en Yucatán, tiene dimensiones semejantes al templo. En este lugar, Fray Diego de Landa, cegado por su celo evangelizador, manda destruir y quemar valiosos códices mayas y estatuas; el mismo Fray Diego, aquí comienza a escribir el “Relato de las Cosas de Yucatán”, tratando de corregir su error. CUZAMÁ (cenotes): (water of the swallows) At Hacienda Chunkanán, climb on a narrow gauge, horse-drawn railcar for one of the most unforgettable experiences of your life. While passing through henequen (sisal) plantations you will be transported back to the 19th Century with every click and clack of the rails. Then you jump back millions of years when visiting the CENOTES, or Dzonot (cavity with water), along the route. Vital freshwater sources sacred to the Maya, they were believed to be accesses to the underworld. CHELENTÚN, has easy access and a maximum depth of 18 m (60 ft). Take a swim in this beautiful covered pool roofed with stalactites. CHACSICNICHE (red ant tree), is difficult to enter and better for scuba diving. BOLONCHOHOL (nine rat holes) has nine holes in its vault, and at certain hours the sun beams through them, painting the crystalline waters a vibrant turquoise blue. Those at ACANCEH and TECOH were built on a pyramid base, and in TEKIT the convent resembles a museum with images in niches. Other convents are located at MAMA, with a proud bell tower and a closed atrium, CHUMAYEL, an example of Medieval Spanish architecture and origin of the Mayan sacred book the Chilam Balam, and TEABO, which has a Franciscan shield in front and a small baroque altar. All are fine examples of Spanish religious architecture built with Mayan know-how and hard work! MANÍ: (It is over – all the best) Dedicated to San Miguel, the church here functioned as an exclusive school for the children of Mayan chiefs and nobility. Its elegant facade, flanked by two bell towers, has beautiful 17th Century altarpieces dedicated to San Antonio, the Assumption, and the Virgin of Light. The OPEN CHAPEL was the first in Yucatan and was as large as the church itself. In front of this church is where Friar Diego de Landa, blinded by his evangelical zeal, had valuable Mayan codices and images destroyed and burned. Realizing his error, he later began writing his “Account of Things of Yucatan”. Open 6a to 12a and 5p to 7p. Both in Mani and nearby Ticul, the Yucatecan cuisine is exquisite.

Ruta sur South route Región “PUUC”. (cerro o serranía): Sus habitantes asentados en tierra roja y fértil, desarrollaron cultura muy propia. Su arquitectura destaca por su forma simple, planos alargados, columnas sólo ornamentales, rica y elaborada decoración de piedras formando mosaicos; casi excluye la figura humana, sobresale casi con obsesión Chaac (dios de la lluvia) con visión Estético-Religiosa del que dependían sus cosechas y su agua potable, almacenada en Chultunes (cisternas) creados por ellos. Entre en íntimo contacto con ellos y la naturaleza. LOLTÚN. (Flor de piedra): Grutas. En el acceso Nahcab (colmena) lo recibirá bajorrelieve de “El Guerrero de Loltún”, dios que emerge del inframundo. En visita guiada asómbrese con formaciones abovedadas, estalactitas y estalagmitas; bóvedas como “La Catedral”, impresionante, “La Mazorca”, “El Cañón” de gigantescas rocas. “Las Columnas Musicales” destacan el sonido “loltún” al ser golpeadas; “Los Haltunes” (sartenes) con agua fresca y rebosante. Pinturas rupestres de manos, animales, rostros. Fue refugio durante la Guerra de Castas. Otras galerías y cámaras, completan un recorrido en el espléndido conjunto de Loltún. TEMPLO DEL SOL, destacando el Palacio “CODZ POP” (alfombra de palma enro-llada) cuya fachada presume mosaicos de piedra y mascarones de Chaac; el acceso a los cuartos ostenta peldaños, que no son más que mascarones de Chaac, cuya trompa tiene tallado de alfombra de palma ¡Imagínese qué lujo de escalera! Su decoración nos evoca el más puro estilo barroco. EL ARCO, majestuoso, era punto de partida del Sacbé (camino banco) que la unía a Uxmal. Abierto de lunes a domingo. UXMAL. (la 3 veces construida): Una de las zonas arqueológicas más importantes de México y el mundo, Patrimonio de la Humanidad… La más pura joya de arte PUUC. De más de 150 edificios, algunos, los más bellos y restaurados son: desafiante a la entrada después del CHULTÚN (cisterna), LA PIRÁMIDE DEL ADIVINO o del enano, de esquinas redondeadas, piedra cortada y sendas escalinatas, las paredes de la fachada con celosías de piedra, fauces de Chaac

EL CUADRÁNGULO DE LAS MONJAS: 4 edificios a cuyo imponente patio central se accesa por un arco; los muros con elaboradas celosías, tableros, figuras de chozas con techos de plumas, pájaros, monos, serpientes entrelazadas y la omnipresente figura de Chaac; estas fachadas estuvieron estucadas y pintadas con colores brillantes. El Juego de Pelota, deporte y culto, el “Palacio del Gobernador”, uno de los más bellos monumentos de América, en cuya rica y fina decoración se tallaron más de 20,000 piedras, majestuoso, de armónicas proporciones; figuras de Chaac, abrazadas por celosías que forman víboras de cascabel, símbolo solar; en la parte superior de la puerta un trono, el rey con magnífico penacho y mucho más. Sus ojos brillarán con su belleza. TEMPLO DE LAS TORTUGAS, símbolo de longevidad. TEMPLO DE LOS FALOS, no de carácter erótico, sino de fertilidad. GRAN PIRÁMIDE, majestuosa e ideal en su altura para admirar el paisaje, PALOMAR y más y más. LOLTÚN. (Stone flower) Caves. At the Nah-cab (bee hive) entrance a bas-relief of the “Warrior of Loltun” greets you as he emerges from the underworld. You will be amazed by the vault, stalactite and stalagmite formations, including the Cathedral, the Ear of Corn, the gigantic rocks forming the Canon, the Musical Columns that say “loltun” when hit, and the Haltuns, brimming with fresh water. Cave paintings of hands, animals and faces can also been seen. The cave served as refuge during the Caste War. Guided tours of the Loltun caves are available from Mon. to Sun. LABNÁ. (old house): Many of the structures here are partially restored, like the Palace and El Mirador. The center of attention, though, is the world-famous ARCH OF LABNA. One of its facades is decorated with Greek motifs and columns, while the other has latticework and Mayan huts. This is known as a Mayan or false arch and takes its inspiration from palm-roofed Mayan huts. Open Mon. to Sun. XLAPAK. (old walls). A true Puuc gem, the PALACE has a very geometric facade with stone mosaics. Chaac masks at the corners seem to want to jump off the facade. Open Mon. to Sun. SAYIL. (place of ants). The site’s three areas marked socioeconomic and religious divisions. Many of the structures are still under restoration,

KABAH. (artist’s hand) Kabah’s structures, like the TEMPLE OF THE SUN, were built on artificial platforms. The CODZ POP (rolled up palm mat) is pure Mayan baroque, with a facade of stone Chaac masks. Even the doors are Chaac masks, with his trunk serving as the step. What a luxury! At the end of the sac-be (white road) linking the site to Uxmal is the ARCH. Open Mon. to Sun. UXMAL. (built 3 times) Recognized as a World Heritage Site, Uxmal is one of the most important archaeological sites in Mexico and the world... The most pure gemstone of the PUCC art. Its over 150 structures are a pure expression of Puuc architecture. Among the most beautiful of the restored structures is THE PYRAMID OF THE MAGICIAN or Dwarf, a round-sided, cut-stone pyramid with steep staircases, stone latticework on the facades and the fangs of Chaac marking the doors. THE NUNNERY QUADRANGLE consists of 4 buildings around an immense central patio. Each structure has a different façade each decorated with latticework, images of Mayan huts with feather roofs, birds, monkeys, intertwined serpents and the omnipresent Chaac. These mosaics were stuccoed and painted with brilliant colors. One of the great monuments of ancient America is the harmoniously proportioned Governor’s Palace. The over 20,000 stones in its facade form a detailed decorative scenario with repeated Chaac figures enveloped in latticework rattle-snakes (a solar symbol). Seated on a throne above the main door is a king with a magnificent headdress. It is truly overwhelming. Ruta poniente West route YAXCOPOIL. (Place of the green poplars): This ex-hacienda is now a tourist stop and private museum. A double Moorish arch marks the entrance. Admire how the haciendas were built, with open rooms, high ceilings, long, breezy corridors, the ornate antique European-style furniture and oil paintings. The hacienda has a MAIN HOUSE, a MACHINE ROOM, with a 1913 Körtins motor, a DEFIBERING PLANT, a POOL, and WORKERS QUARTERS, which have a room with Mayan figures.
