Muestra de altares de Hanal Pixán | Displays of the Hanal Pixán Altars

omo cada año, se llevará a cabo la tradicional Gran Muestra Estatal de Altares en la Plaza Grande, organizada por la Secretaria de Cultura. Donde se podrán apreciar altares de Hanal pixán, elaborados por los diversos municipios de Yucatán e instituciones educativas. La muestra estará abierta únicamente el 27 de octubre de 10am a 2pm. Una gran opción para conocer más acerca de la cultura y tradiciones del Estado.

ucatán es una tierra llena de cultura y tradición, donde continua el legado de la civilización maya. Gran ejemplo de ello son las diversas leyendas de la mitología maya que han pasado de generación en generación entre sus habitantes, historias fantásticas que rescatan la memoria y tradiciones de una civilización que sigue vigente en algunas zonas de la península. A continuación, presentamos algunas de las leyendas mayas más populares:

EL ENANO DE UXMAL | THE DWARF OF UXMAL Hace mucho tiempo, en la época del imperio de Uxmal, en la ciudad cercana de Kabah vivía una anciana hechicera, quien cuidaba un misterioso huevo que había encontrado, de éste salió un niño, al cual ella cuidó como suyo. Al pasar los años a aquel niño se convirtió en adulto, pero su cuerpo nunca creció. Un día el enano encontró el tunkul, un instrumento musical,

que había guardado su madre, y lo tocó tan fuerte que se escuchó hasta la ciudad de Uxmal. El rey al escuchar esto se enfadó, ya que ese sonido era la profecía de que se acercaba el fin de su reinado, así que fue a hablar con el enano para preguntarle si no habría alguna forma de evitarlo. Éste le dijo que le diría, pero primero debía construir un camino que uniera las dos ciudades. El rey aceptó y al terminar el camino el enano respondió a su petición con una prueba que consistía en romper con la cabeza el fruto más duro de la zona, un cocoyol; éste acepto con la condición de que el enano fuera primero. El enano superó la prueba sin problemas, pero cuando fue el turno del rey éste murió en el intento. Así el enano fue proclamado el nuevo rey de Uxmal. Al principio fue un buen rey, pero al pasar los años su malicia y soberbia causó disgusto a los dioses supremos, lo que destruyó la ciudad y acabó con el gran imperio de Uxmal.

A long time ago, at the time when Uxmal was an Empire, in the nearby city of Kabah there lived an old sorceress. She was looking after a mysterious egg that she had found and, when it hatched, an infant came fell out of it. She cared for the child as her own. As the years passed, that child became an adult, but his body never grew in size. One day the Dwarf found the tunkul, a musical instrument, which his mother had kept hidden away. He reached for it and played it so loudly that it was heard all the way to the city of Uxmal. The king, upon hearing this noise, grew furious: he knew that sound was the prophecy that the end of his reign was approaching. He went to speak with the dwarf to ask him if there was any way to avoid the end of his reign. The dwarf told him he would tell him, but first he had to build a road to connect the two cities. The king accepted the demand and ordered the road constructed. With his request fulfilled, the dwarf said there was a test, one that consisted in breaking the hardest fruit of the area, a cocoyol, with the head. The king accepted on the condition that the dwarf go first. The dwarf passed the test without a problem, but when it was the king's turn he broke his skull and died. Thus the dwarf was proclaimed the new king of Uxmal. At first he was a good king, but over the years his malice and arrogance caused displeasure to the supreme gods, who then destroyed the city and ended the great empire of Uxmal.

LOS ALUXES | THE ALUXES Pequeños seres hechos de barro, que cobraban vida por medio oraciones y ofrendas, creados para proteger las tierras de los pueblos mayas. Los aluxes son fieles a sus dueños y traviesos con desconocidos, por lo cual eran colocados en lugares ocultos del cultivo para evitar que entrasen ladrones o extraños por las noches. Se dice que cuando la propiedad pasaba a un nuevo dueño, éste debía ofrecerles a los aluxes comida, miel, pozol o cigarros para que éstos no los asustasen. No muchas personas pueden verlos ya que son hábiles y ligeros como el viento. Actualmente aun cuidan las tierras de los pueblos mayas.

These are small creatures made of clay. They came to life through the prayers and offerings of humans, created by the gods to protect the lands of the Maya peoples. The Aluxes are faithful to their owners and mischievous with strangers, tricksters, if you will. As such, they are kept in hidden places in the farm fields in order to prevent thieves or strangers from entering at night. It is said that when a property passed to a new owner, he has to offer the Aluxes food, honey, pozol or cigars so that they will not be frightened by the new owner. Not many people can see them because they are skillful and light as the wind. At present, many believe, they still take care of the lands of the Maya peoples.

LA XTABAY | THE XTABAY Existían dos hermanas dotadas de gran belleza: Xkeban, despreciada por el pueblo porque se entregaba al amor, y amada por los enfermos y desprotegidos; y Utz-Colel, amada por el pueblo, pero con incapaz de amar sus semejantes. Cuando murió Xkeban, los enfermos fueron a verla, su tumba estaba rodeada de flores, y de ella se desprendía un aroma agradable como perfume. Allí brotó la flor de xtabentun, una flor que embriaga dulcemente. Después murió su hermana Utz-Colel, nadie fue a verla, las flores de su tumba se marchitaron, ya que de ésta comenzó a emitir un olor fétido. En ella brotó la flor tzacam, un cactus con espinas. Esto la enfureció y regresó de la eternidad para vengarse, así que decidió imitar a su hermana en vida; el espíritu de Utz-Colel aparece en el árbol de ceiba, peinando su larga cabellera ofreciendo amor a los hombres, y llevando a un destino mortal a los que caen en sus encantos.

There were two sisters endowed with great beauty: Xkeban, despised by her people because she gave herself to lust, and was loved by the ill and outliers; and Utz-Colel, loved by the people, but unable to return their love for her. When Xkeban died, the ill went to see her; her grave was surrounded by flowers, and a pleasant aroma like perfume emanated from her mortal remains. From her resting place, the flower of xtabentun bloomed, a flower that intoxicates us with its sweet scent. After her sister Utz-Colel died, no one went to pay their respect, the flowers of her grave withered; her corpse began to emit a foul odor. The tzacam flower, a cactus with thorns, sprouted from her tomb. This infuriated her and she returned from the hereafter to take revenge. Thus she decided to emulate her sister in life; the spirit of Utz-Colel is found in the ceiba tree, combing her long hair as an offering to entice the love of men. Es la más amplia y bella avenida de Mérida y una de las más hermosas de México. / (Calle 58 and Calle 47): Its construction began in 1897 and concluded in the early years of the twentieth century. It is the largest and most beautiful boulevard in Mérida and one of the most beautiful in Mexico. 2. PALACIO CANTÓN: (año 1911) –Paseo Montejo y calle 43- Museo Regional de Antropología. Este palacio construido por el arquitecto italiano Enrico Deserti, también constructor del teatro “Peón Contreras”, es de los más admirables de Mérida. l ayuntamiento de Mérida se prepara para llevar a cabo el 31 de octubre, el ya tradicional Paseo de las Ánimas, con el objetivo de preservar nuestras tradiciones y costumbres, como parte de las celebraciones del Hanal Pixán. Con una muestra de altares que abarca 13 cuadras de la ciudad pasando por zonas emblemáticas, partiendo el Cementerio General, pasando por la Ermita de Santa Isabel y la esquina del Diamante y concluye en el barrio de San Juan. Las actividades inician a las 6 de la tarde, en la puerta del Panteón Florido; disfruta de música prehispánica, leyendas mayas, el teatro regional, la vaquería de ánimas y mucho más.

ocated to the east of the State of Yucatán, Uh Najil, is a rural and ecotourism destination within the indigenous Maya community of Ek Balam. It is a community from which one can walk to the archaeological site of the same name, which is today still subject to archaeological excavation and which served as a regional Maya capital during pre-Hispanic times. Characterized by having a warm and humid climate, Uh Najil boasts 12 cabins designed in a rustic Maya style. Each is properly equipped to accommodate a family of five. Each has access to a camping area and a view for the archaeological site, which can all be reached either by mountain bike, or by walking. To reach Uh Najil, one can take a bus at the main bus station bound for the city of Mérida which is approximately a two-hour ride. Once you reach Valladolid, you can hire a taxi to take you to the community, approximately 30 minutes away. Don't miss this unique experience filled with activities that lead to one of the most beautiful archeological sites of Yucatán. This ceremonial center is an acropolis that boasts a height of 29 meters (95 feet), the site where the Mayas played ball, erected a stele depicting a ruler of Ek Balam, and constructed a beautiful arch serving as entrance or door to the Maya city.

The respectful and wise relationship of the structures with nature is one reason Maya astronomers continue to use these buildings, particularly the structure known as ‘THE TEMPLE OF THE SEVEN DOLLS,” so named because seven dolls were found inside its chamber. The building, perfectly aligned with the cardinal points. The ancient Maya in this region developed a distinct culture with an architecture highlighted by simple forms, long planes, ornamental columns and stone mosaics with an almost total absence of the human figure. LOLTÚN. (Stone flower) Caves. At the Nah-cab (bee hive) entrance a bas-relief of the “Warrior of Loltun” greets you as he emerges from the underworld. XLAPAK. (old walls). A true Puuc gem, the PALACE has a very geometric facade with stone mosaics. Chaac masks at the corners seem to want to jump off the facade. Each structure has a different façade each decorated with latticework, images of Mayan huts with feather roofs, birds, monkeys, intertwined serpents and the omnipresent Chaac. These mosaics were stuccoed and painted with brilliant colors. One of the great monuments of ancient America is the harmoniously proportioned Governor’s Palace. The over 20,000 stones in its facade form a detailed decorative scenario with repeated Chaac figures enveloped in latticework rattle-snakes (a solar symbol).
