eptiembre no sólo es importante para nuestro estado sino que también lo es para toda la República Mexicana; el espíritu de las fiestas patrias contagian el ánimo de millones de mexicanos y eso se hace sentir en todos los rincones del territorio nacional. Fue hace más de 200 años cuando México logró su independencia, por ello, en diversas partes del país durante este mes las calles se pintan de los colores de la bandera nacional en representación de la Independencia Mexicana, acontecida desde el grito de Dolores realizado por el Padre Miguel Hidalgo el 16 de septiembre de 1810 para dar inicio a una revolución en contra del gobierno español, hasta la entrada del Ejército Trigarante de la Ciudad de México el 27 de septiembre de 1821. Yucatán siendo un estado lleno de tradiciones y cultura no se queda atrás con esta gran celebración, en donde muchos establecimientos como hoteles, antros, bares y restaurantes se unen a los festejos ofreciendo llamativas promociones para disfrutar en grande en compañía de familiares y/o amigos. Y como tradición de cada año, nadie debe perderse de la gran fiesta del 15 de septiembre realizado en la Plaza Grande del Centro Histórico de Mérida, en donde la gente se reúne al comienzo de la noche para disfrutar desde primera fila esta celebración que da inicio cuando el Gobernador del Estado sube al balcón del Palacio de Gobierno y realiza el famoso discurso de la Independencia, el cual termina con la emocionante y contagiosa frase ¡Viva México!, que tanto el gobernador como los asistentes sin importar su procedencia gritan al unísono.

the Fiestas Patrias, or Patr iotic Fiestas, convey the enthusiasm of millions of Mexicans and this pride is felt in all corners of the nation’s lands. It was more than 200 years ago when Mexico achieved its independence, as such, in various parts of the country during this month the streets are painted in the colors of the national flag in honor of Mexican Independence, which began with the Grito de Dolores, or the “Cry of Dolores” made by Father Miguel Hidalgo on September 16, 1810. That event rallied the nation to revolt against the Spanish rule, which led to the entrance of the Ejército Trigarante, or the Army of the Three Guarantees, into Mexico City on September 27, 1821. Yucatán, a state full of traditions and culture, does not shy away from commemorating this great celebration. Many businesses, such as hotels, clubs, bars, and restaurants participate in the festivities, offering attractive promotions for big-time entertainment in the company of family and friends. And as is traditional every year, no one should miss out on the great public fiesta on September 15 that takes place in the Main Square, or Zócalo, of the historical center of downtown Mérida. The public assembles at dusk to enjoy from “front row” view of this celebration which starts off with the Governor of the State appearing on the balcony of the Palace of Government and reenacting the famous call for independence, which ends with the exciting and contagious phrase ¡Viva Mexico!, or Long Live Mexico!, being proclaimed. The governor and the public regardless of their social class, and united as one, shout in unison.

sta casona del siglo VXIII ubicada en el corazón de la ciudad, guarda un gran valor histórico que muy pocos conocen; pues en ella, según investigaciones realizadas, se dice que nació Don Andrés Quintana Roo (1787), una importante figura del México insurgente, embajador, diputado, periodista, poeta y esposo de la reconocida revolucionaria, Leona Vicario. La arquitectura de esta magnífica residencia conserva un estilo colonial característico de su época, algo que sin duda le aporta una belleza inigualable a cada uno de sus rincones. Se dice que a mediados del siglo XX, esta residencia fungía como casa, carpintería y bodega de un hombre apellidado Urcelay, cuya esposa, después de haber quedado viuda, dividió la propiedad en cinco secciones; perteneciendo la parte más representativa de la casa, al ahora restaurante “Amaro”, en el cual se puede apreciar un patio flanqueado por arcadas y corredores, además de un gran árbol de orquídea de casi 120 años, que convive en armonía con el ambiente en este espacio cultural.

his manse, dating to the 18th century, is located in the heart of the city. It preserves a great history about which very few people know. According to research carried out, it is now believed that Don Andrés Quintana Roo was born here in 1787. He is an important figure of the Insurgent Mexico (the Mexican independence movement from Spain), who also served as ambassador, congressman, journalist, poet, and husband of the renowned revolutionary, Leona Vicario. The architecture of this magnificent residence preserves a colonial style characteristic of his time, something that definitely offers visitors a glimpse into the unique beauty to each one of its corners. It is said that in the mid-20th century this house served as residence, carpentry, and cellar of a man surnamed Urcelay, whose wife, after having been widowed, divided the property into five sections.The part of the home that is the most representative part of the original structure today houses the, “Amaro” restaurant, in which you can dine in an open courtyard flanked by arcades and corridors. In addition the great orchid tree in the courtyard believed to be almost 120 years old, which thrives in harmony with the environment in this cultural space.

XX, las haciendas de Yucatán vuelven a recobrar un gran auge y esplendor, ahora como lugares de perfecta armonía para el descanso, la reflexión, la meditación, pero sobre todo, para ofrecer a los visitantes experiencias únicas. comida yucateca contemporánea; antes establos y corrales, ahora albercas y spas; antiguas estancias señoriales, ahora propiedades de encanto peculiar de Yucatán para el mundo. En el estado, son varias las haciendas que pueden visitarse y afortunadamente el número va en aumento. Unas como Temozón Sur, San José Cholul, Santa Rosa, Xcanatún, Hacienda Misné han sido rescatadas y transformadas en hoteles de lujo, sus restaurantes abren sus puertas a todo público. Otras han sido restauradas y adaptadas como paradores turísticos. Sotuta de Peón ha recuperado el antiguo estilo de las haciendas henequeneras hasta el extremo de reconstruir las vías del ferrocarril Decauville de vía angosta y poner en funcionamiento los viejos trucks, sus visitas guiadas son excelentes. En San Pedro Ochil, aparte de rescatar el edificio se han agregado talleres de artesanías, un plantío de henequén y un restaurante. Yaxcopoil, permite el acceso a modo de castillo europeo o museo.

At its peak in the late 19th and early 20th centuries, henequen covered over two thirds of the state. Also known as sisal after the port from where it was shipped out, it generated immense wealth in the state. By 1845, over one thousand plantations were reaping incredible profits from the henequen boom, and the state produced 90% of the rope and sacks used worldwide. The advent of synthetic fibers, among other causes, eventually brought the fall of this “green gold”. Almost a hundred years later, the plantations ofYucatan have begun to recover their splendor and beauty as retreats offering harmony, relaxation, meditation, and above all a unique experience. What were once machine rooms have been transformed into restaurants

serving contemporary Yucatecan cuisine, what were once stables and corrals are now pools and spas.The state’s old lordly mansions have become peculiarly enchanting attractions for visitors and locals alike. There are currently a number of plantations open to the public, and more are being restored every year. Temozón Sur, San José Cholul, Santa Rosa, Xcanatún and Hacienda Misné have been restored and converted into luxury hotels with excellent restaurants open to everyone. Sotuta de Peón is a fantastic journey back in time to the old plantation life style, complete with truck cars running on fully rebuilt narrow-gauge railroads and excellent guided tours. San Pedro Ochil was restored, a restaurant added, handcrafts workshops built nearby and even a henequen field planted.Yaxcopoil is a plantation time capsule on a par with European manor house museums.

Most of the plantations were built on or near ancient Mayan sites and kept a Mayan name.

Cuando regresaban tenían como misión civilizar su tierra a la europea, lo cual fue visible en la arquitectura de las haciendas. Plantation owners sent their sons to Europe (preferably Paris) for their education, with the hope that they would return and help civilize Yucatan a la Europe. This is why many plantations have an obviously European architectural style.

LA VAQUERÍA: Nace en las haciendas. Se celebraban en honor al santo o patrón de la hacienda o pueblo, fiesta que tardaba tres días y cuatro noches. Llegaba la orquesta tocando una alegre jarana, en tanto los “voladores” invadían el espacio. This is a traditional festival born at the plantations and held in honor of the patron saint of the plantation or a village.These celebrations last three days and four nights, and begin with a local orchestra playing a “jarana” tune and dancers taking over the grounds.

SITUACIÓN ECONÓMICA / FINANCIAL BOOM: La bonanza permitió que la ciudad de Mérida tuviese alumbrado público eléctrico y tranvías antes que la Ciudad de México. A principios del siglo XX, Mérida contaba con el mayor número de millonarios per cápita que en cualquier otra parte de América Latina. The henequen boom was such that the state capital Merida had street lighting and trams before Mexico City, and that by the early 20th Century there more millionaires in this city than in any other in Latin America.

his park, whose original purpose was to be a botanical garden, was created as part of the celebration of Mexico’s Independence Centennial, which is why it was first named “Independence Park.” Days later, however, García Rejón, Secretary of the Private Commission, planted a zapote (Manilkara zapota) tree for the Centenario, or “Centennial,” hence, the source of the zoo’s name today. The transformation of the park into a zoo occurred 1962 under the supervision of the Chapultepec Zoo, where animals that already were housed there and at other zoos were transferred to this park, where they had greater space to live and thrive. Since then, the Centenario Zoological Park has undergone several remodelings, which have included additions such as the aviary and the serpentarium, as well as public areas including the section for composers, the train station, and the area for a children’s playground, among others.

DZIBILCHALTÚN. (Lugar de Escrituras sobre Piedras Planas) (500 a.C.) Resplandece entre 600 y 1000 d.C. La respetuosa y sabia relación con la naturaleza hizo de los mayas grandes astrónomos que hasta nuestros días observamos en el edificio denominado “TEMPLO DE LAS 7 MUÑECAS” ya que en su interior encontraron 7 ofrendas de muñecas. El edificio, perfectamente alineado con los puntos cardinales y cuyas fachadas anterior y posterior tienen 1 puerta y 2 ventanas, a través de las cuales se genera un extraordinario fenómeno de luz durante los EQUINOCCIOS DE PRIMAVERA y DE OTOÑO: “Kin (El Sol) se posesiona del Templo a través del espacio hueco de sus puertas, cuyos marcos le dan un reverencial abrazo”. Suba las escalinatas y goce la belleza del templo y sienta además su energía. Contemple “LA CAPILLA ABIERTA” de la época colonial con su santuario de bóveda corrida. Recorra sus edificios, admire la Pirámide más larga del Mundo Maya. El Cenote “XLAKÁH” (Poblado Viejo), proveía de agua a la población y era el centro de ritos religiosos. No sólo admire, ¡Sumérjase en sus Frescas DZIBILCHALTÚN. which in Maya means, “the Place of Scriptures on Flat stones,” dates back 500 B.C.E. Its apogee is between 600 C.E. and 1000 C.E. CUZAMÁ (cenotes): (water of the swallows) At Hacienda Chunkanán, climb on a narrow gauge, horse-drawn railcar for one of the most unforgettable experiences of your life. While passing through henequen (sisal) plantations you will be transported back to the 19th Century with every click and clack of the rails. Then you jump back millions of years when visiting the CENOTES, or Dzonot (cavity with water), along the route. Vital freshwater sources sacred to the Maya, they were believed to be accesses to the underworld. CHELENTÚN, has easy access and a maximum depth of 18 m (60 ft). Take a swim in this beautiful covered pool roofed with stalactites. CHACSICNICHE (red ant tree), is difficult to enter and better for scuba diving. BOLONCHOHOL (nine rat holes) has nine holes in its vault, and at certain hours the sun beams through them, painting the crystalline waters a vibrant turquoise blue. English guided “Truck” MAYAPÁN: (a Mayan standard or flag) Mayan nobility concentrated here in the last great capital of the Maya region. Protecting the city is a huge wall of giant stone blocks. In its center is the PYRAMID OF KUKULCAN, a small-scale imitation of El Castillo at Chichen. On the winter solstice, Kin (the sun) descends down a staircase in an impressive Light and Shadow phenomenon. The OBSERVATORY has 2 stelae, one showing a warrior and the other months of the year. Among the infinity of other ruins is the Temple of Warriors. CENOTE CHUMUL, now dry, was the city’s water supply. Though perhaps not as stunning as Uxmal or Chichen, Mayapan has its own captivating majesty. Open 8a. to 5p. Mon. to Sun. CONVENTS: These sacred buildings of the New Evangelism brought by the Spanish to Yucatan had to rival the magnificent Mayan Temples. Those at ACANCEH and TECOH were built on a pyramid base, and in TEKIT the convent resembles a museum with images in niches. Other convents are located at MAMA, with a proud bell tower and a closed atrium, CHUMAYEL, an example of Medieval Spanish architecture and origin of the Mayan sacred book the Chilam Balam, and TEABO, which has a Franciscan shield in front and a small baroque altar. All are fine examples of Spanish religious architecture built with Mayan know-how and hard work! MANÍ: (It is over – all the best) Dedicated to San Miguel, the church here functioned as an exclusive school for the children of Mayan chiefs and nobility. Its elegant facade, flanked by two bell towers, has beautiful 17th Century altarpieces dedicated to San Antonio, the Assumption, and the Virgin of Light. The OPEN CHAPEL was the first in Yucatan and was as large as the church itself. In front of this church is where Friar Diego de Landa, blinded by his evangelical zeal, had valuable Mayan codices and images destroyed and burned. Realizing his error, he later began writing his “Account of Things of Yucatan”. Open 6a to 12a and 5p to 7p. Both in Mani and nearby Ticul, the Yucatecan cuisine is exquisite.

Región “PUUC”. (cerro o serranía): Sus habitantes asentados en tierra roja y fértil, desarrollaron cultura muy propia. Su arquitectura destaca por su forma simple, planos alargados, columnas sólo ornamentales, rica y elaborada decoración de piedras formando mosaicos; casi excluye la figura humana, sobresale casi con obsesión Chaac (dios de la lluvia) con visión Estético-Religiosa del que dependían sus cosechas y su agua potable, almacenada en Chultunes (cisternas) creados por ellos. Entre en íntimo contacto con ellos y la naturaleza. LOLTÚN. (Flor de piedra): Grutas. En el acceso Nahcab (colmena) lo recibirá bajorrelieve de “El Guerrero de Loltún”, dios que emerge del inframundo. En visita guiada asómbrese con formaciones abovedadas, estalactitas y estalagmitas; bóvedas como “La Catedral”, impresionante, “La Mazorca”, “El Cañón” de gigantescas rocas. “Las Columnas Musicales” destacan el sonido “loltún” al ser golpeadas; “Los Haltunes” (sartenes) con agua fresca y rebosante. Pinturas rupestres de manos, animales, rostros. Fue refugio durante la Guerra de Castas. Otras galerías y cámaras, completan un recorrido en el espléndido conjunto de Loltún. Visitas guiadas de lunes a domingo. Horario de 9:30,11,12:30,14,15 y 16 hrs. LABNÁ. (casa vieja): Además de hermosos aunque poco restaurados edificios como “El Palacio” y “El Mirador”, centre su atención en el mundialmente famoso “ARCO DE LABNÁ”: una fachada ornamentada con grecas y columnillas y otra con celosías y chozas mayas; la creación arquitectónica del “arco maya” o “arco falso”, toma magistralmente “PUUC”. (hill or ridge) region. The ancient Maya in this region developed a distinct culture with an architecture highlighted by simple forms, long planes, ornamental columns and stone mosaics with an almost total absence of the human figure. The rain god Chaac is almost an obsession, not surprising in this waterless region where harvests and drinking water, depended exclusively on rain water. Immerse yourself in nature and begin to understand the Puuc Maya. LOLTÚN. (Stone flower) Caves. At the Nah-cab (bee hive) entrance a bas-relief of the “Warrior of Loltun” greets you as he emerges from the underworld. You will be amazed by the vault, stalactite and stalagmite formations, including the Cathedral, the Ear of Corn, the gigantic rocks forming the Canon, the Musical Columns that say “loltun” when hit, and the Haltuns, brimming with fresh water. Cave paintings of hands, animals and faces can also been seen. The cave served as refuge during the Caste War. Guided tours of the Loltun caves are available from Mon. to Sun. LABNÁ. (old house): Many of the structures here are partially restored, like the Palace and El Mirador. The center of attention, though, is the world-famous ARCH OF LABNA. One of its facades is decorated with Greek motifs and columns, while the other has latticework and Mayan huts. This is known as a Mayan or false arch and takes its inspiration from palm-roofed Mayan huts. Open Mon. to Sun. XLAPAK. (old walls). A true Puuc gem, the PALACE has a very geometric facade with stone mosaics. Chaac masks at the corners seem to want to jump off the facade. Open Mon. to Sun. SAYIL. (place of ants). The site’s three areas marked socioeconomic and religious divisions. Many of the structures are still under restoration, like the BALL COURT, and EL MIRADOR, from which beautiful stelae were rescued (on display at the entrance). Abierto de lunes a domingo. KABAH. (mano de artista): Sólo Uxmal la superaba. Sus construcciones levantan de plataformas artificiales. TEMPLO DEL SOL, destacando el Palacio “CODZ POP” (alfombra de palma enro-llada) cuya fachada presume mosaicos de piedra y mascarones de Chaac; el acceso a los cuartos ostenta peldaños, que no son más que mascarones de Chaac, cuya trompa tiene tallado de alfombra de palma ¡Imagínese qué lujo de escalera! Su decoración nos evoca el más puro estilo barroco. EL ARCO, majestuoso, era punto de partida del Sacbé (camino banco) que la unía a Uxmal. Abierto de lunes a domingo. UXMAL. (la 3 veces construida): Una de las zonas arqueológicas más importantes de México y el mundo, Patrimonio de la Humanidad… La más pura joya de arte PUUC. De más de 150 edificios, algunos, los más bellos y restaurados son: desafiante a la entrada después del CHULTÚN (cisterna), LA PIRÁMIDE DEL ADIVINO o del enano, de esquinas redondeadas, piedra cortada y sendas escalinatas, las paredes de floors above. Its over 150 structures are a pure expression of Puuc architecture. Among the most beautiful of the restored structures is THE PYRAMID OF THE MAGICIAN or Dwarf, a round-sided, cut-stone pyramid with steep staircases, stone latticework on the facades and the fangs of Chaac marking the doors. THE NUNNERY QUADRANGLE consists of 4 buildings around an immense central patio. Each structure has a different façade each decorated with latticework, images of Mayan huts with feather roofs, birds, monkeys, intertwined serpents and the omnipresent Chaac. These mosaics were stuccoed and painted with brilliant colors. One of the great monuments of ancient America is the harmoniously proportioned Governor’s Palace. The over 20,000 stones in its facade form a detailed decorative scenario with repeated Chaac figures enveloped in latticework rattle-snakes (a solar symbol). Seated on a throne above the main door is a king with a magnificent headdress. It is truly overwhelming. Other important structures are the TEMPLE OF TURTLES, a symbol of longevity, the TEMPLE OF PHALLI, more about fertility than eroticism, the GREAT PYRAMID, a prime spot for a site overview, EL PALOMAR, etc. etc. There’s no better way to end your visit than to see the spectacular Light and Sound show in the evenings, with seating right in the Nunnery Quadrangle.
