In a productive system where it seems so hard to move on long-awaited improvements

and solutions that would lead to a break with the past, laspola.com proposes a new issue of Showcase, the magazine that introduces to

the textile and clothing reality the first international trade events on schedule: Pitti Filati, Milano Unica and Première Vision. These three fairs are still of the greatest importance for those who work in this sector, even though there are actually some other new trade shows that are trying to become ever more important in the international trade fair calendar: beside the fairs of Milano Unica and Premièr Vision- also held for some time in countries that are new to this reality, like China, Brazil and in the U.S.- we now have other trade events outside Florence, in emerging countries (like Turkey) or in some States that have never been reference places for trade fairs (like some African States).

A world tour with many new stops always being added to it, as a reflection of the constant and undismayed dynamism in the textile/ clothing sector, which has been fighting crisis with all its might over the last decade .

Pitti Uomo is the stimulating trade show that preceeds these three international events, and for this reason it is a reliable starting point to get a detailed analysis of the market and the econmomic situation, thanks to the research carried out by Sistema Moda Italia and the words spoken by fashion designers, entrepreneurs and all those working in this sector, here quoted as they were spoken.

And who knows whether some companies that have always been dedicated to the production can find a positive new start in the Stock Market: here we will look at those brands that will maybe find themselves to directly have to do with stocks and quotations in a next future . And finally, for the third time in a row, a section, really appreciated by people who work in this sector, dedicated to some food suggestions. The choice of this verb is in line with the fact that the places to eat named here in Showcase are some of the places more appreciated by those who often travel abroad for work of pleasure. And, sweetness will be this issue’s theme to accompany our wish that 2014 will finally see a recovery in the sector. Enjoy your reading.

In un sistema produttivo che stenta a dare l’accelerata tanto attesa e proporre novità di netta ‘rottura’ col passato laspola.com propone un nuovo numero di Showcase, la rivista che accompagna il mondo del tessile abbigliamento nei primi tre importanti appuntamenti fieristici internazionali: Pitti Filati, Milano Unica e Première Vision. Un trittico di saloni tuttora imperdibile per chi lavora nel settore ma al quale si stanno aggiungendo nuove fiere in cerca di un posizionamento sempre più rilevante nel calendario internazionale: non solo le fiere ‘fuori sede’ di Milano Unica e Première Vision, da tempo alla scoperta di nuove realtà in Cina piuttosto che in Brasile o negli Stati Uniti, ma anche manifestazioni in paesi emergenti (la Turchia ad esempio) o in Stati da poco attivi nel campo fieristico (come alcune nazioni africane). Un tour mondiale che si arricchisce di tappe sempre nuove e che dimostra, in ogni caso, la vivacità costante e imperterrita del tessile-abbigliamento, da ormai un decennio impegnato in una lotta senza quartiere contro la crisi. Pitti Uomo è l’antipasto gustoso del trittico fieristico e per questo diventa per ogni numero di Showcase un approdo sicuro per trovare un’analisi dettagliata della situazione di economie e mercati, sia grazie agli studi di Sistema Moda Italia sia per le parole di stilisti, imprenditori e addetti ai lavori, che fedelmente riportiamo.

E chissà che il futuro per una svolta positiva anche per aziende finora limitate alla produzione non sia in Borsa: vediamo quindi quali sono i marchi che potrebbero avere tra poco un rapporto diretto con azioni e quotazioni.

Torna infine per la terza volta consecutiva una rubrica che è piaciuta agli addetti ai lavori, quella dei consigli gastronomici. ‘Piaciuta’ è il termine adatto visto che i locali consigliati da Showcase sono alcuni di quelli che hanno riscosso i maggiori apprezzamenti da parte di chi viaggia spesso, anche per lavoro. Per fare una sorta di augurio per un 2014 finalmente di ripresa abbiamo scelto il tema della dolcezza. Buona lettura.

A “sold out” Un 2014 da ‘tutto esaurito’ 2014 season di Matteo Grazzini As the February and September Showcase issues have become closely associated with the trade fair calendar, we have taken the habit of introducing the three trade fairs which, more than others, attract the attention of those working at the top end of the clothing-textile chain. We are talking about Pitti Filati, Milano Unica and Première Vision, the three not-to-be-missed events for those dealing with textile production.

However, in the past few years, other trade shows have come to the limelight and we will be introducing them to show how deeply trade fairs have changed in recent years, as far as organization, horizons and timing are concerned: Munich Fabric Start which, at the turn of the new millennium, has carved out a niche for itself in the heart of Europe; Texbridge, which has directed world attention to the emerging Turkish market; Texworld, automatically associated with PV because of the scheduling but not in terms of products and markets; last June’s Techtextil in Frankfurt, CPM in Moscow, along with Milano Unica and Première Vision. And more closely connected to the Italian market is Filo which, once again in 2014, will be showcasing the best of yarns in the historic Palazzo delle Stelline in Milan. Thus, a more global understanding of the trade fair season, which opens in Florence with Pitti Immagine Filati, a “fort” inside which Italy’s and the world’s leading yarn manufacturers barricade themselves, offering a gallant resistance against the crisis, the drop in demand and consumption and the rise in raw material prices.

There is no better place than Fortezza da Basso for this event that will be showcasing, in its 74th edition, nearly one hundred brands, 95 to be precise, 18 of which from abroad (UK, Japan, Turkey, China, Germany and Rumania), and 20 within the Fashion at Work area. In January 2013, 3.700 buyers and visitors landed in Florence, 1500 of which (40,5% of total number) from abroad. Many regular exhibitors and two companies coming back at the fair after some years of absence, Filartex and Monticolor, to secure or even reinforce their position in major markets (Germany, UK, France, US, Spain, Japan, Turkey, Switzerland, The Netherlands, Hong Kong, Russia, Sweden).

The stands will be showing the world preview of spring/summer 2015 knitwear yarn collections. Following the successful results of the pilot edition in July, KnitClub, the area devoted to top-quality knitwear manufacturers, is back too, while Play is the name and theme of the Research Space, which branches out into the fields of theatre and sport, but also mime and

Da quando gli Showcase di febbraio e settembre hanno preso una connotazione legata a doppio filo al calendario fieristico è consuetudine presentare il trittico di saloni che, più di altri, catalizzano l’attenzione di chi lavora a monte della filiera del tessile-abbigliamento.

Quindi Pitti Filati, Milano Unica e Première Vision, tre appuntamenti impedibili per chi lavora nel mondo della produzione tessile. Ma negli ultimi anni si sono affacciate alla ribalta anche altre manifestazioni che, a margine, presentiamo per far capire quanto siano cambiati i modi, gli orizzonti e le tempistiche per fare le fiere: Munich Fabric Start, che nel nuovo secolo si è ritagliata uno spazio sempre più importante nel cuore dell’Europa, Texbridge, che ha portato l’attenzione sul nuovo mercato turco, Texworld, abbinato automaticamente a PV per il calendario ma non certo per tipologia di prodotti e mercati di riferimento, Techtextil del giugno scorso a Francoforte, CPM a Mosca o più semplicemente anche gli appuntamenti internazionali delle stesse Milano Unica e Première Vision.

Più ristretto al mercato italiano, almeno nella sua connotazione fieristica, Filo, che anche nel 2014 sarà presente come ‘baluardo’ milanese per i filati, nella sede storica del Palazzo delle Stelline.

Un panorama quindi più vasto che comunque ha una sua prima delimitazione a Firenze, con Pitti Immagine Filati, un ‘fortino’ nel quale rimangono asserragliate le aziende leader della produzione in Italia e quindi nel mondo: una resistenza strenua alla crisi, al calo della domanda e dei consumi e alla crescita dei costi delle materie prime. Quale posto più adatto quindi che la Fortezza da Basso per questa manifestazione che nella sua edizione numero 74 sfiora i 100 marchi presenti: 95 il numero esatto con 18 arrivi dall’estero (Gran Bretagna, Giappone, Turchia, Cina, Germania e Romania), mentre sono 20 gli espositori all’interno dell’area Fashion At Work. Nel gennaio di un anno fa furono 3.700 i buyer ed i visitatori arrivati a Firenze, 1.500 dei quali (40,5% del totale) stranieri.

Per confermare e, magari, migliorare i numeri sui mercati (quelli principali di riferimento sono Germania, Gran Bretagna, Francia, Stati Uniti, Spagna, Giappone, Turchia Svizzera, Olanda, Hong Kong, Russia e Svezia) tante le conferme e due le novità-rientri: Filartex e Monticolor.

Negli stand l’anteprima mondiale primavera/estate 2015 delle collezioni di filati per maglieria. Torna anche, dopo il successo dell’edizione pilota di luglio, KnitClub, l’area riservata ai maglifici di qualità, mentre è ‘Play’ il titolo e il tema dello Spazio Ricerca e che tocca settori come teatro e sport, ma anche il mimo e il gioco delle ombre.

Stesso tema ma declinato al passato per Retrogaming, ovvero l’edizione numero 23 di Vintage Selection alla Stazione Leopolda, in scena dal 22 al 26 gennaio: la manifestazione è un inno alla passione per i videogiochi di vecchia data e ai nostalgici di Atari 2600 o Commodore 64.

Same theme but different background for Retrogaming, that is, the 23rd Vintage Selection fair held at Stazione Leopolda from January 22 through 26: the show is the celebration of the passion and nostalgia for retro computer games and video game consoles, such as Atari 2600 and Commodore 64.

Milano Unica is the first major event of the February trade fair season, probably the most important one of the past few decades for the whole textile-clothing industry: it is a taste of what is to be expected in 2014, described as the year bringing the economic winds of change. New markets opening up, new agreements aimed at relaunching the home market and making Italian products more and more desirable and accessible abroad.

This is also going to be the first edition of Milano Unica marked by the absence of Sergio Loro Piana, the Italian entrepreneur whose name as always been closely associated with the Milanese trade fair, at the head of which his brother Pier Luigi has distinguished himself too.

Appearing on the horizon is also the 2015 Expo, which will certainly contribute to the highlighting of Milano Unica, the model of “multicentrality” and great teamwork mentioned by Marenzi and Calenda (see our Showcase interviews): different textile districts working together for a common goal. Representing the “Made in Italy” in Milan as well as in China is the main target of Milano Unica, which has seen all the Pratese companies coming back and has definitely won the challenge taken up ten years ago, when the fear of the economic crisis had not come true yet. With Milano Unica China, the Milanese trade fair Milano Unica apre il febbraio più importante degli ultimi decenni per tutto il settore del tessile-abbigliamento: proprio da Milano infatti arriveranno le indicazioni su un 2014 che si presenta come (l’ennesimo) anno di svolta verso la ripresa. Nuovi mercati da seguire, nuovi accordi per rilanciare il mercato interno e una produzione italiana sempre più appetite all’estero. Sarà la prima edizione di Milano Unica senza Sergio Loro Piana, uno degli imprenditori più legati alla fiera milanese, guidata nel precedente mandato dal fratello Pier Luigi.

E all’orizzonte c’è anche l’Expo del 2015, che sicuramente contribuirà a dare risalto anche ad una fiera di settore come Milano Unica che, di fatto, rappresenta quell’esempio di multicentralità unita in squadra citata da Marenzi e Calenda (vedi interviste all’interno di Showcase): tanti distretti insieme per un unico obiettivo. Rappresentare il made in Italy tanto al Portello quanto nell’edizione cinese del salone è il caposaldo di Milano Unica che, recuperate ormai a tutti gli effetti anche le aziende pratesi, ha ricreato il modello di fiera unica in Italia lanciato come sfida ormai dieci anni fa, quando la crisi ancora era un timore non concretizzato.

Con Milano Unica Cina il salone milanese ha trovato un’altra nuova dimensione nella quale confrontarsi con un mercato ormai non più vergine ma ancora molto vasto: i primi riscontri sembrano decisamente positivi.

Con ModAmont ormai parte integrante della famiglia di PV Pluriel anche Première Vision arriva a questa edizione invernale con qualche novità e tanta voglia di confermare le ottime indicazioni degli ultimi due anni. I sei saloni dislocati al Parc des Expositions di Parigi attendono i più di 60.000 visitatori attesi (previsione minima dopo i 63.000 di settembre 2013) per vedere da vicino e toccare con mano le collezioni primavera/ estate 2015 di filatori, tessitori, produttori di accessori, uffici studi di disegno, conciatori e confezionisti.

Première Vision

has the chance to deal with a market not completely unexplored but still very wide: the first results are definitely encouraging.

With ModAmont now well-established as an integral part of the PV Pluriel family, even Première Vision sounds promising and more than ready to match the excellent results of the past two years. The six trade shows held at Parc des Expositions in Paris are expecting over 60.000 visitors( at the very least, considering that 63.000 visitors attended the September 2013 fair), who will see and touch the spring/summer 2015 collections by spinners, weavers, accessory manufacturers, designers, tanners and garment makers.

According to the official data, 73% of visitors come from outside of France, that is, from 130 countries, in spite of the fact that the French trade show has been the first to be staged in foreign countries such as Brazil, United States, China and Russia.

They will be welcomed by nearly 2.000 exhibitors covering all aspects of the textile industry, from Expofil’s yarns to Zoom’s finished products. The selection committee, made up of experts who choose the exhibitors based on the criteria of creativity, savoir-faire, service quality and sound financial situation, have opened the fair’s doors to a few new companies and, following the increase of February 2013 (a total of 1492 exhibitors, that is, + 12% as compared to February 2012), the number of exhibitors attending this fair is stable, despite the usual turnover. So, Première Vision, the main trade fair, welcomes 25 new exhibitors: 15 weavers coming from Italy, France, Turkey, South Korea, Japan and Portugal; 4 spinning and knitwear factories specializing in creative rectilinear knitting on show in the Knitwear Solutions area; and 6 extraordinarily skilled ateliers exhibiting at Maison d’Exceptions.

Dati alla mano il 73% dei visitatori arriva da fuori Francia, ovvero da 130 paesi, nonostante sia stata proprio la fiera francese la prima ad andare “a domicilio” in Paesi come il Brasile, gli Stati Uniti, la Cina e la Russia: ad attenderli poco meno di 2.000 espositori, ognuno con le proprie specificità ma tutti uniti in un percorso espositivo che inizia dal filato di Expofil e arriva al prodotto finito di Zoom. Per il 2014 il comitato di selezione composto dai professionisti del settore, secondo dei criteri di creatività, savoir-faire, di qualità di servizio e di solidità finanziaria ha aperto le porte a poche nuove aziende e, dopo l’aumento del febbraio 2013 (1492 espositori / +12% rispetto a febbraio 2012), il numero di partecipanti per l’edizione attuale rimane stabile, ma con un turn over fisiologico. Per questo a Première Vision, salone principale, saranno 25 i nuovi espositori. 15 tessitori provenienti da: Italia, Francia, Turchia, Corea del Sud, Giappone e Portogallo; 4 filatori e maglifici esperti della maglieria rettilinea creativa, presentati presso la piattaforma Knitwear Solutions; e 6 atelier dai savoir-faire e dalle tecniche eccezionali presenti a Maison d’Exceptions.

Ultima ora - Proprio nei giorni in cui Showcase stava andando in tipografia per la stampa è arrivata da Parigi una notizia inattesa: Première Vision ha infatti firmato un accordo di partnership con CNR Holding Inc., l'organizzatore delle principali fiere in Turchia e gestore del centro espositivo CNR Expo di Istanbul, sospendendo l'roganizzazione di Première Vision Moscow per far partire da ottobre 2014 a Première Vision Istanbul. Il salone sarà rivolto ai professionisti della moda provenienti da tutta Europa dell'Est e dal Medio Oriente: per organizzarlo sarà creata una società ad hoc controllata al 51% da Première Vision SA , e al 49 % dal CNR Holding.

Da un lato l'esperienza e la reputazione di Première Vision, dall'altro la rete e la competenza di CNR, organizzatrice anche di Texbridge.

The greatest gap is between the domestic and the foreign market.

Both in their upstream and downstream phases all the three quarters of the year have showed fluctuations, though there is a significant decrease in the drop rate (from -10% in the period between January and March to -3.2% in July-September), while the foreign market has been characterized by positive trends in the first nine months of the years: +1.1% in the first quarter, +8.5% in the second quarter and +3.1 in the third one.

For the data related to the production, the estimates are not so good, showing a downward trend for the whole year 2013 with a slow decrease in the drop rate in the last period of the year coming as a cold comfort. This can be a reason for us to build a climate of hope and positivity in the sector on the eve of the most important trade fairs in Europe (and at an international level, as well).

Nevertheless, world trade growth in 2013 is a cold comfort for us, and it even downgraded the forecasts made by international analysts: according to the WTO, indeed, world trade volume registered a growth trend estimated at 1% in the first and at 0.5% in the second quarter of the year.

As a consequence of this, the textile/fashion sector in Italy, after the recovery in the world demand for textiles and clothing in 2010 and 2011, found some difficulties both in 2012 and in the first half of 2013.

According to the data provided towards the half of November 2013 related to the months between January and July 2013, the sales volume of textiles and clothing abroad remained at the same level of the previous year in the same period.

Pitti Immagine Uomo è per tradizione l’appuntamento che dà il via all’anno fieristico ma è Pitti Filati che, a gennaio ormai inoltrato può fare un ulteriore punto sulla “salute” del tessile-abbigliamento italiano.

In ogni caso i saloni fiorentini, compreso Pitti Bimbo, sono il punto di svolta tra un anno che si chiude e un altro che si apre dovendo fare tesoro di quanto successo nei dodici mesi precedenti. Così la nota del Centro Studi di Sistema Moda Italia che fotografa il settore nei primi nove mesi del 2013 è il vademecum necessario per capire dove sta andando l’economia tessile italiana e, soprattutto, capire chi sta meglio e chi invece soffre ancora la crisi.

Il 2013, anno che per qualcuno doveva essere quello della ripresa decisa, in realtà ha lasciato indicazioni controverse, frutto di un saliscendi sull’ottovolante dell’economia mondiale: bene nel primo trimestre, ancora meglio nel secondo, così così il terzo, ancora da definire in modo chiaro l’ultimo periodo.

In molti, tra settembre e dicembre, hanno ringraziato l’export, che ha tenuto in linea i fatturati, ma in tanti si sono anche lamentati per un ulteriore rallentamento della produzione. I dati forniti da Sistema Moda Italia a Pitti Immagine evidenziano l’importanza del mercato estero nel “compensare le perdite sul fronte interno quanto meno a partire da aprile”.

Per quanto riguarda il fatturato totale infatti per le oltre cento aziende prese a campione il primo trimestre ha visto cedere il -4,6% (con il Tessile in calo del -5% e l’Abbigliamento-Moda del -4,3%), ma nel secondo trimestre si è notata un’inversione di tendenza che ha portato il fatturato ad un aumento del +1,9% (sintesi di un +0,7% per il Tessile e di un +2,6% per l’Abbigliamento-Moda). Idem le stime del periodo luglio-settembre, con una dinamica positiva delle vendite, anche se affievolita rispetto al trimestre precedente: per il complesso delle aziende monitorate la crescita frena infatti al +0,9%.

La frattura netta è tra mercato interno e estero. Nel primo caso sia a ‘monte’ che a ‘valle’ ci sono state flessioni in tutti e tre i trimestri dell’anno, anche se il ritmo di caduta decelera significativamente (dal -10% del gennaio-marzo si passa al -3,2% del luglio-settembre), mentre fuori dai confini sono state rilevate dinamiche positive per tutti i primi nove mesi: +1,1% il primo trimestre, +8,5% nel secondo e +3,1% nel terzo.

A stare peggio è la produzione, sia per il Tessile sia per l’Abbigliamento-Moda: dato negativo in tutto l’anno ma, magra consolazione, con una caduta

In particular there was a modest growth of 0.2% in the exports in the textile /clothing sector to something more than 16.1 billions of euros.

In fact, if we look at macro sectors, the negative trend in the “upstream phase” (with some improvements, though) resulted in a decrease in exports during the period examined by 3.7% from the one side, while from the other side, the “downstream phase” continued to show a positive trend, with 2.4% increase in the turnover related to total exports.

Concerning the imports, instead, those of yarns decreased by 1.7% and those of fabrics by 0.5%: knitwear imports fell by 5.3%, those related to textile clothing by 8.6% while the decrease of hosiery imports reached 13.5 %. As a reverse trend in comparison with the average data obtained, we see an increase (by 1.9%) in imports related to home textile. Concerning the EU market, France was confirmed as the first export market for Italian companies in the textile/fashion industry with revenues of about 1.7 billions of euro –and a further decrease by 1.7% - while Germany, appearing in the second position, showed the same levels of 2012. Spain dropped down to the seventh position, instead, while the United Kingdom improved its position to the fifth end market for Italy.

Outside Europe, the exports towards the U.S. increased (by 1.2%), and Russia showed good results as well, with an increase by 4.6% for a total of 830 billions of euro. The sales volume.

The sales volume in China was once more characterized by a two-figure increase by 10.4% (473 billion of euro) and there was also an increase in the sales volume in Japan (by 3.7%). rallentata via via che ci sia avvicinava a fine anno. Secondo i dati disponibili a metà novembre 2013 relativamente al periodo gennaio-luglio 2013, le vendite estere di Tessile-Moda si sono mantenute sui livelli raggiunti nel medesimo periodo del 2012. In particolare, l’export di Tessile-Moda ha fatto registrare un modesto +0,2%, assestandosi a poco più di 16,1 miliardi di euro. Con riferimento ai macro-comparti, infatti, da un lato per il “monte” ha visto proseguire il trend negativo (pur in miglioramento), facendo registrare nel periodo monitorato un calo dell’export pari al -3,7%; dall’altro, il “valle” si è mantenuto in crescita, evidenziando un incremento del fatturato estero del +2,4%. Per quanto riguarda l’import invece i filati arretrano del -1,7%, mentre i tessuti scendono dello 0,5%: per la maglieria la flessione è stata pari al -5,3%, per l’abbigliamento in tessuto al -8,6%, mentre raggiunge il -13,5% nel caso della calzetteria. In controtendenza rispetto al dato medio, si assiste ad un incremento delle importazioni del tessile-casa (+1,9%).

Nell’ambito del mercato comunitario è la Francia a confermarsi primo partner delle imprese italiane di Tessile-Moda a quota 1,7 miliardi di euro circa, ha perso ancora un -1,7%, mentre la Germania, in seconda posizione, mantiene i livelli del 2012. Male la Spagna, scivolata al settimo posto, mentre migliora il Regno Unito, quinto mercato di sbocco.

Fuori dall’Europa cresce l’export verso gli Stati Uniti (+1,2%), regge bene la Russia, cresciuta del +4,6% per un totale di oltre 830 milioni di euro. Le vendite in Cina sperimentano ancora una crescita a due cifre, pari al +10,4% (472 milioni di euro) e risalgono anche quelle in Giappone (+3,7%).

Which Italian companies might soon make a successful debut on the Stock Exchange? The answer is provided by Le Quotabili 2013 work, the eighth edition of the annual study carried out by Pambianco Strategie di impresa, which selected 50 companies in the Fashion and Luxury industry and 15 in the Home and Design field having the technical and objective requirements to be quoted on the Stock Exchange within a period of three to five years. If all these companies were to be quoted, Piazza Affari would enjoy an additional capitalization of € 26 billion, an approximate doubling of the current value of the sector’s companies quoted on the Stock Exchange.

The listing may prove to be a positive step forward given the current economic situation. The recent listings of Salvatore Ferragamo, Brunello Cucinelli, Italia Independent Group and Moncler have shown that financial markets reward creativity and passion, typical of Italian brands, even at a time of macroeconomic uncertainty, and testify to the increasingly important role played by the Milanese Stock Exchange in both the industrial and financial field.

The process may be given another push forward through the opportunities offered by foreign markets, especially the emerging ones.

The Fashion & Luxury sectors being considered for listing are Clothing, Shoes, Leather Goods, Jewelry/Wristwatches, Perfumes/Beauty Products, Eyeglasses. The Home & Design sectors are Furniture, Sofas, Kitchens, Lighting, Bath Furnishing. Among the Fashion & Luxury companies likely to be quoted are, in the following order: Giorgio Armani, Gruppo Ermenegildo Zegna and Dolce&Gabbana. They were on the podium last year too, although in a different order. Among the “new entrants” are Fabiana Filippi (11th), Santoni (30th ), Marcolin (33rd ).

On the Home & Design podium are, in the following order, Kartell, Flos and B&B Italia.

Quali sono le società italiane che potrebbero debuttare con successo in Borsa?

Lo ha svelato la ricerca ‘Le Quotabili 2013’, ottava edizione dello studio annuale realizzato da Pambianco Strategie di impresa, che ha selezionato 50 possibili aziende settore Moda e Lusso e 15 di quello Casa e design, che hanno i requisiti tecnici e oggettivi per essere quotate in Borsa in un orizzonte temporale di 3/5 anni. Se tutti queste aziende si quotassero effettivamente, potrebbe arrivare per Piazza Affari una capitalizzazione aggiuntiva di 26 miliardi di euro, quasi un raddoppio del valore attuale delle società del settore quotate in Borsa.

La quotazione potrebbe essere un passo positivo in questo momento economico, del resto le recenti quotazioni di Salvatore Ferragamo, Brunello Cucinelli, Italia Independent Group e l’annunciata quotazione di Moncler dimostrano come la creatività e la passione tipica dei brand italiani siano premiati dai mercati finanziari, pur in presenza di condizioni di incertezza macroeconomica, e testimoniano il ruolo sempre più imponente della piazza milanese non solo in ambito industriale ma anche finanziario.

Ulteriore spinta in questo senso potrebbero essere le nuove opportunità offerte dai mercati esteri, soprattutto emergenti.

He is not yet 41, but Carlo Calenda has already the authority and the courage to strongly face the political world, opposing it and supportino, in quality of Deputy Minister for Economic Development, the entrepreneurial reality, which he already knows very well.

This politician and entrepreneur has managed to enter the control rooms in Rome after a career as a prodigy of finance working for banks (San Paolo Invest, Prudential Sim and Southern Star), international value Italian brands (Ferrari), communication giants (Sky), the Confindustria confederation of Italian industries (International Affairs and Strategic division Director at the time of the Presidence of Luca Cordero di Montezemolo) and public authorities (CEO at Interporto Campano and President of Interporto Servizi Cargo).

Since he works as Deputy Minister, he found himself to do many times with the textile/clothing reality -in occasion of official meetings, trade shows and various events, acknowledging this way the value and quality of this sector of the Italian economy. But it was when he made his speech at the opening ceremony of Pitti Immagine Uomo that Mr. Calenda convinced, as nobody had done in the previous years, all those working in his sector: very long and convinced applauses when compared to those done out of politeness or sense of obligation to the other relators, and a lot of people talking about it in the corridors of the Fortezza da Basso.

The support to Mr. Calenda was primarily favored by his supportive interest to the sector showed through the project “Firenze Hometown of Fashion”, that next June will turn Florence into the center of International fashion in celebration of the 60th year of the Center of Florence for the Italian Fashion: “We are going to keep on working on even after june this project –said Mr. Calenda- that has resulted from a collaboration between all people in this sector, as the first example here of co-operative work. On this iniziative the government will invest more this year, that is two millions euro, we don’t have many financial resources at disposal, in fact, but we are happy to invest what we have in projects like this”. But why a project on fashion has been chosen as the first investment of the Ministry for Economic Development?

We are really indebted to the Italian Fashion System, since it has always driven Italian economy, while during these years the politics has been supporting the globalisation, which has destroyed Italian factories over the last twenty years, withouth doing anything to help enterprises.

Something really silly. Manufacturing is considered of a primary value everywhere in the world, all governments want to protect it. We must finally understand that there is no “curse” on Italy and its economy; on the contrary, there is a great “need of Italy” in the world. In the meanwhile we are starting to settle with the Italian Fashion System by financially supporting this project in Florence.

Therefore, what we need is to change globalization.

We will change the way it presents itself. For the moment, through the settlement of the Free Trade Agreement between Europe and the United

A 41 anni da compiere Carlo Calenda ha già l’autorità e il coraggio per affrontare di petto il mondo della politica attaccandolo frontalmente e schierandosi, da Viceministro allo Sviluppo Economico, a fianco del mondo dell’imprenditoria, che peraltro conosce molto bene.

Questo politico-manager è arrivato nelle stanze dei bottoni di Roma con un percorso da enfant prodige della finanza attraverso banche (San Paolo Invest, Prudential Sim e Suothern Star), brand italiani di valore mondiale (Ferrari), colossi della comunicazione (Sky), Confindustria (è stato direttore dell’Area strategica e Affari Internazionali durante la presidenza di Luca Cordero di Montezemolo) e infine enti pubblici (direttore generale di Interporto Campano e presidente di Interporto Servizi Cargo). Da quando è al Ministero ha incrociato più e più volte il mondo del tessileabbigliamento sia in incontri istituzionali che in saloni, fiere e manifestazioni, dando così a questo settore dell’economia italiana un riconoscimento di valore e qualità. Ma è stato a Pitti Immagine Uomo che Calenda ha convinto come nessuno faceva da anni parlando alla cerimonia di apertura tutti gli addetti ai lavori: applausi ben più lunghi e convinti di quelli riservati per cortesia e ‘dovere’ ai vari relatori e vasta eco anche nei corridoi della Fortezza da Basso.

A portare consenso a Calenda è stato fin da subito l’appoggio dichiarato al settore, a iniziare da ‘Firenze Hometown of Fashion’, il progetto che a giugno farà della città toscana il centro della moda internazionale, per festeggiare i 60 anni del Centro di Firenze per la Moda Italiana: “E’ un progetto che continuerà anche dopo giugno – ha detto Calenda – e che è stato concordato con tutti i soggetti, nel primo vero esempio di lavoro di squadra. E’ questa l’iniziativa sulla quale il Governo investirà di più nel 2014, ovvero due milioni; non abbiamo molte risorse ma quelle poche che abbiamo le convogliamo volentieri in questo tipo di progetti”.

Ma perché proprio un progetto sulla moda come primo investimento del Ministero dello Sviluppo Economico?

Abbiamo una cambiale aperta con il sistema moda italiano perché da sempre traina l’economia italiana mentre la politica, in questi anni, ha fatto di tutto per la globalizzazione che in venti anni ha distrutto l’industria italiana e niente per aiutare le imprese. Vna vera cretinaggine. In tutto il mondo la manifattura ha un valore primario e gli Stati la difendono e la tutelano. Bisogna cominciare a capire che non c’è nessuna maledizione che grava sull’Italia e che condiziona l’economia, anzi, c’è molta fame di Italia nel mondo. Intanto con l’aiuto che diamo al progetto fiorentino iniziamo a pagare il debito di questa cambiale.

Quindi c’è bisogno di cambiare la globalizzazione.

Like seller does, we wanted to ask customers what they want, so we came to speak with the Americans.

Come ogni venditore abbiamo voluto chiedere ai clienti cosa volevano o cercavano e così abbiamo parlato con gli americani.

States, which will be a good thing for the textile/clothing sector. And the United States are also going to stipulate a Free Trade ASgrement with the Pacific Rim Nations, as well, thus creating an economic triangle with Europe which will count for 70% of the Gross World Product.

Why is this agreement with the United States so important?

It is crucial, indie. We have discussed together with Sistema Moda Italia and the representatives of the various unions and associations to find out a strategy to enter the American market again. Like any seller does, we wanted to ask customers what they want, look or ask for, so we came to speak with the Americans, who told us about two possible solutions.

The first would be to start an “incoming” project, that is to invite and bring here American buyers and mass medias rather than investing so much in conferences or workshops abroad. The second and consequent solution would be to make everything in our power to let them know about the way how and where our products are made, because our quality, manufacturing and artisan work need to be valued, in fact. Everybody knows that some great Italian brands have been purchased by foreign investors with consequent increase in the turnovers and occupation, but we have to let people know that the skills and the ideas have remained in Italy.

The next edition of Pitti Uomo will be a first step in this direction. Indeed, there was a risk that other countries were going to create initiatives like Pitti. Our Government made the best to ensure that Pitti would come out stronger from this competition, revealing itself as the simboli trade event for the Made-in –Italy production.

And what will be the role played by politics?

The politics in Italy is centuries behind with this themes. For the moment, it would better get a move on.

Perché è così importante questo accordo con gli Stati Uniti?

E’ cruciale. Con Sistema Moda Italia, consorzi e associazioni varie ci siamo messi intorno ad un tavolo e ci siamo chiesti cosa fare per tornare sul mercato americano. Come ogni venditore abbiamo voluto chiedere ai clienti cosa volevano, cercavano o chiedevano e così abbiamo parlato con gli americani, che ci hanno indicato due vie da seguire. La prima è avviare un progetto di incoming, ovvero fare qualche missione o workshop in meno dalle loro parti e invitare e portare qui in Italia buyers e mass media statunitensi. La seconda e seguente è sviluppare tutto quanto possibile per far vedere come e dove nascono i prodotti, perché la nostra qualità, manualità e artigianalità deve essere valorizzata. Tutti sanno che alcuni grandi marchi italiani sono stati acquistati da gruppi stranieri, con aumento di fatturato e dell’occupazione, ma oltre a questo bisogna far sapere che la testa, le idee, sono rimaste in Italia. La prossima edizione di Pitti Uomo sarà un primo passo di questo percorso. Pitti infatti correva il rischio di essere stata messa sotto competizione da parte di iniziative di altri Paesi. Il governo prese l'impegno di fare il necessario per garantire che Pitti uscisse rafforzato da questa competizione, nella capacità di far vedere di essere la manifestazione simbolo del made in Italy.

Il ruolo della politica quale sarà?

La politica su questi temi è in ritardo di secoli. Intanto è bene che ricominci a guadagnare terreno.

Some quiet Un po’ di quiete dopo la tempesta after the storm di Matteo Grazzini

Last July, Michele Tronconi passed the baton to Claudio Marenzi , who became the new President of Sistema Moda Italia when things were not that easy, at a time of a crises that seemed to be global but that it was not global, in fact, characterized by political instability in Italy and political disorders abroad, with a number of companies closing down that is less alarming in comparison with a couple of years ago -but which still needs to be looked at- and with international markets in continuous development and therefore under continuous control.

But this context is not entirely worrisome, in fact.

The data related to the beginning of 2014 have made un thinking of a first squaring of the circle, since 2013 closed with a positive, though modest, Net Result for the first time after five years of positive signals related to the exclusive competence in the clothing sector only. Then people started to speculate about an understanding with professional associations concerning the renewal of the national collective agreement for the textile/fashion industry, which was going to be applicable to about 500,000 workers in those sectors.

And it is at these positive notes that the Marenzi, who is about 50 and comes from Piedmont, CEO of the Herno family fashion label, looks to carry on his analysis of the sector.

“2014 starts with an inherited increase in the turnovers by 1.2% in the textile/clothing industry, and for the first time after a long period it is not only the downstream supply chain to take advantage of it, but also the upstream supply chain”.

Is this a sign that the next strategies for the future will have more solid bases?

It is clear that market indicators suggest that the markets we should focus on in the next two years are once more Eastern markets with about 1 billion of new potential customers.

So it is all about chasing the new rich again?

No, this billion of people are not the new rich. They have lifted themselves out of poverty and have a new spending power for the first time in their lives. They have benefited from the global distribution of wealth, because it is not true that the world has become poorer: the money is the same as before, the only thing is that it is to be found in different places, though, that is why we can neither look nor hope for a comeback to the past, when Europe and America were rich and other countries were poor.

Can something rescue Italy and the “old” rich?

Claudio Marenzi ha raccolto nello scorso luglio da Michele Tronconi il testimone alla guida di Sistema Moda Italia in un momento non certo facile, condizionato dalla crisi che sembra globale ma che in realtà globale non è, caratterizzato da instabilità politica in Italia e da effervescenze politiche all’estero, con un’emorragia di aziende meno grave di qualche biennio fa ma ancora da curare e con i mercati mondiali in continua evoluzione e di conseguenza in continua analisi.

Un quadro da paura? Non del tutto, anzi.

I numeri di inizio 2014 fanno infatti pensare ad una prima quadratura del cerchio, con il tessile che ha chiuso il 2013 con un dato positivo, sia pure minimo, per la prima volta dopo cinque anni, nei quali i segnali positivi erano stati competenza esclusiva del comparto abbigliamento. Poi è arrivata l’ipotesi di accordo con le organizzazioni sindacali di categoria per il rinnovo del contratto collettivo nazionale del settore tessile moda, che interessa circa 500.000 addetti.

Ed è da queste note di fiducia che può partire l’analisi di Marenzi, poco più che cinquantenne, piemontese, presidente della Herno, l’azienda abbigliamento di famiglia.

“Il 2014 porta in dote un +1,2% di crescita dei fatturati del tessile-abbigliamento e per la prima volta dopo tanto tempo a giovarsene è anche la filiera a monte, non solo quella a valle”.

E’ un segno che le strategie per il futuro hanno basi più solide?

E’ chiaro che le indicazioni dei mercati dicono che quelli da aggredire nel prossimo biennio sono ancora quelli ad Oriente, dove gravita quasi tutto il miliardo di nuovi potenziali clienti.

Quindi si tratta di dare ancora la caccia ai nuovi ricchi?

No, questo miliardo di persone non è composto da nuovi ricchi. Sono persone che si sono affrancate dalla povertà ed hanno capacità di spesa nuove per la

Since global economy is not suffering from crisis, what we need is a new strategic position in the markets, but we also have to focus on quality, creating an Italy system characterized by new synergies. France is just Paris, Great Britain is just London. This is the Italy of districts and crafts, Prato, Biella, Como…a multi-centric universe, where everybody should work together, every company with its characteristics and skills, planning together a strategic appointment schedule both for the trade exhibition in Florence and for the fairs in Milan, for example. So we will protect ourselves from foreign competition, also as far as our appointment schedules are concerned Nevertheless, there are discouraging signals in Europe regarding the application of excise duty rates for goods imported from outside the EU, like Pakistan…

That of the duty rates in Pakistan is undoubtedly a very negative issue, originated from a political decision taken at an European level and Italy couldn’t or maybe didn’t want to do something to oppose it. Now it is the cotton reality to be at stake in Italy with uncertainty related to jobs.

Should we expect some troubles like that in 2014 or can we look at the relationships with other countries with hope?

This 2014 should be mainly characterized by really favorable agreements, in fact, like the free trade with the U.S., as well as an internal agreement aimed at protecting our companies and based on quality and collaboration.

One last forecast for 2014. Will the purchase of well known Italian brands in the textile/clothing sector by foreign investors continue?

Has the year 2013 left “an open door” for great foreign groups?

The door was already open before 2013, since foreign investors have purchased Italian brands for quite some time. But we do not have to necessarily take this like something negative, given the fact that investments in this sense have led to an increase in the turnovers and employment, and to a more visibility in the markets. So the possibility that other brands could be purchased abroad doesn’t worry me that much. prima volta nella vita. Hanno goduto della ridistribuzione della ricchezza su scala mondiale, perchè non è vero che il mondo è più povero, ma è vero che girano gli stessi soldi di prima solo in posti diversi e per questo non è ipotizzabile nè sperabile un ritorno al passato, quando Europa e America erano ricche e altri paesi poveri.

Cosa può salvare l’Italia ed i “vecchi” benestanti?

Visto che l’economia globale non è in crisi bisogna trovare una nuova collocazione sui mercati puntando sulla qualità e creando un sistema Italia con nuove sinergie. La Francia è Parigi e basta, l’Inghilterra è Londra e stop. Noi siamo l’Italia dei distretti, Prato, Biella, Como... siamo una realtà multicentrica, dobbiamo lavorare insieme ognuno con le proprie caratteristiche e capacità, magari concordando calendari sinergici per le fiere di Firenze unite alle sfilate di Milano. Così ci difendiamo dalla concorrenza estera, anche sulla questione dei calendari.

Però intanto dall’Europa arrivano segnali per nulla incoraggianti sul fronte dei dazi extra-UE, vedi il Pakistan...

Quella dei dazi pakistani è una vicenda sicuramente negativa che nasce da una volontà politica europea contro la quale l’Italia non ha potuto o voluto far niente per tentare di stoppare la decisione. Adesso abbiamo la realtà cotoniera a rischio, con posti di lavoro vacillanti.

Nel 2014 dobbiamo aspettarci altri scherzetti del genere o possiamo guardare con fiducia ai rapporti con gli altri Stati?

In realtà il 2014 dovrebbe portare soprattutto ottime intese, come il libero scambio con gli Stati Uniti, oltre alle già ricordate alleanze interne per fare fronte comune nel nome della qualità e della collaborazione.

Infine un’altra previsione per il 2014. Continueranno le cessioni all’estero di grandi brand del tessile-abbigliamento italiano? Il 2013 ha lasciato la porta aperta ai gradi gruppi stranieri?

La porta era già aperta prima del 2013 perchè è da tempo che i marchi vengono ceduti all’estero. Ma è una cosa che non va vista per forza con negatività, anche perchè per ora le cessioni hanno portato una crescita in termini di fatturati, di assunzione di personale e di visibilità sui mercati. Quindi la possibilità che possano esserci altre cessioni non è per me causa di timore.

Ma l’eleganza trapela anche dalle camicie sartoriali, di taglio rigoroso e proposte in colori decisi. A fare da testimonial per questa collezione, a Firenze, Morgan, reduce dal successo di X Factor, personaggio che si ama o si odia e che può diventare un’arma a doppio taglio. “Morgan è un testimonial di energia – afferma Massimo Rebecchi – assolutamente alternativo, difficilmente inquadrabile, interpreta i capi in maniera personale. Ma al tempo stesso intelligente e corretto nell’utilizzo degli abiti”.

Ha ancora senso allora un testimonial?

Assolutamente sì, se è in grado di valorizzare gli abiti che indossa, pur non subendoli pedissequamente: è giusto che chi lo indossa faccio suo l’abito, solo così l’abito esprime tutte le sue potenzialità.

Anche il cliente ‘comune’ ha questa maturità?

Oggi penso di sì. Da alcuni anni il cliente è molto attento, non è più supinamente fedele a un marchio, è aggiornato sulle novità e le tendenze e compra ovunque: quando viaggia fisicamente e quando naviga sulla rete web.

C’è ancora una differenza tra il cliente dei Paesi emergenti e quello dei cosiddetti mercati maturi?

Forse sì, ma devo dire che negli ultimi anni anche i clienti dei paesi emergenti sono cresciuti, hanno più conoscenze e più pretese di informazione. E questo ovviamente aumenterà ancora.

markets?

There probably are, but I have to admit that, in the past few years, customers from emerging markets have grown up, they are more knowledgeable and expect to be informed. And all this is but the beginning.

If customers expect to be informed, product traceability becomes crucial. Some of your fellow entrepreneurs, however, are afraid of this transparency, which might show products not entirely made in Italy in a bad light.

It is not my case, I believe that traceability is very important but also that the “made- somewhere-else” should not be demonized: there are processing techniques that form a strong part of a country’s culture and are carried out there with masterly skill. Nonetheless, complete and clear information is absolutely necessary.

What market intrigues you the most?

China, no doubt. Chinese customers are very different from the Europeans: they often have kitsch taste. They love being over-the-top.

I wonder if, apart from the language barrier, there is any true understanding between them and us.

After having attended Pitti Uomo in Florence, what can you say about today’s propensity to consume? Can we be optimistic about it?

It’s too soon to say, but the fair registered a high attendance of buyers and visitors, who proved to be very interested in the collections.

Yes, I think we can be optimistic.

Se il cliente è informato e pretende di essere consapevole, diventa essenziale la tracciabilità del prodotto.

Alcuni suoi colleghi che producono in Paesi a basso costo di manodopera, però, temono un po’ questa trasparenza, che potrebbe gettare una cattiva luce su prodotti non interamente Made in Italy.

Non è il mio caso, credo che la tracciabilità sia molto importante e credo anche che non vada demonizzato il ‘made in altrove’: ci sono lavorazioni che fanno parte della cultura di certi popoli e certi paesi e qui sono fatte magistralmente. Certo sono necessarie la chiarezza e l’informazione.

Qual è il mercato che la incuriosisce di più?

Sicuramente la Cina. Il cliente cinese è così diverso da quello europeo: a volte vengono da loro richieste assolutamente kitch. Amano gli eccessi. Mi chiedo se, al di là della lingua, ci sia un’effettiva comprensione tra noi e loro.

Infine, dopo avere vissuto Pitti Uomo a Firenze, come le pare che evolva la propensione al consumo dei compratori di oggi? Si può pensare in maniera ottimistica?

E’ presto per dirlo, ma devo dire che in fiera c’è stata una buona affluenza, accompagnata anche un concreto interesse. Sì, direi che possiamo essere ottimisti.

The good La Prato che vale Prato di Elisa Signorini

The trade fair season is kicking off: two months of tension over feedback on new collections, orders and monitoring of the market’s state of health. Among the various textile districts, Prato is standing out for liveliness, spirit of enterprise and commitment: the public institutions and associations by investing in new projects and the private companies by investing in innovation and research.

In the pages that follow, the opinions of two personalities active in Prato’s textile industry on both the public and private level: Francesco Marini, the newly-elected president of the Youth Group of Prato’s Industrialist Association and owner of Gruppo Marini Industrie, and Sandro Ciardi, president of Pratotrade Consortium, founder of the Ultra e Dinamo company and currently working at Emmetex for the Masterloom brand.

“We are under the impression- says Marini- that our companies have developed a product specialization approach. Prato’s textile companies have finally realized that it is necessary to provide consumers with an easily recognizable image: although we make semifinished products, it is important to have a well-known brand”. Such a strategy has been embraced some years ago by the Biellese district, where textile manufacturers have their name added to the label placed on the garments, which is an added value itself, besides showing that garment makers make a well-pondered choice when it comes to textile manufactures and allow consumers to know exactly what they are wearing.

Does this involve a closer relationship between textile manufacturers and fashion designers?

“I think so- says Marini- I believe that the latest trend followed by textile entrepreneurs is that of looking for customers who are similar to us, who share our industrial vision. We have always had a close relationship and cooperation with customers and the willingness to improve our knowledge of the market and its needs, but today even more so.

How is Marini Industrie dealing with such difficult times?

We are quite satisfied with the results, we have been growing in the past three years owing to our business with foreign countries, in the proportion of 70 to 30%. Now, considering the US dollar and yen trend, we have decided to invest in our repositioning on the European and Italian market. The good news is that the great fashion brands are now buying in Italy again. After having run away towards new markets, they realized that true innovation and quality live here.

Do you work only with the great names of fashion design or also with up-and-coming designers?

Of course, the great designer names are a guarantee of success and I’m talking about the top names, from Armani to Max Mara.

These are big companies that sell their products all over the world and maintain a leading position on the home market too, despite Si apre la stagione delle fiere: due mesi in cui la tensione è al massimo per i feedback che arrivano circa le collezioni, per gli ordini, per la valutazione dello stato di salute del mercato. Tra i vari distretti tessili, Prato si sta facendo notare per vitalità, per iniziative e impegno. Una vitalità a livello istituzionale con progetti e investimenti da parte delle associazioni, ma anche a livello industriale con aziende che spendono per innovazione e ricerca.

Su queste pagine le opinioni di due personaggi impegnati nell’industria tessile pratese a livello personale e istituzionale: Francesco Marini, da poco presidente del Gruppo giovani dell’Unione degli Industriali di Prato e attivo nell’azienda di famiglia Gruppo Marini Industrie, e Sandro Ciardi, presidente del consorzio Pratotrade, fondatore anche se non più socio di Ultra e Dinamo attualmente impegnato nella Emmetex per il marchio Masterloom.

“La sensazione è che le nostre aziende si stiano specializzando – commenta Marini – per prodotto e per target. Finalmente anche a Prato si è capito che è necessario dare un’immagine riconoscibile: anche se produciamo semilavorati il fatto di avere un marchio riconosciuto è importante”. Strategia intrapresa da tempo nel distretto biellese, del resto, dove i produttori di tessuti da tempo sono visibilmente presenti all’interno dei capi con la loro etichetta e questo dà un valore aggiunto al capo stesso.

Segnale che chi produce capi di abbigliamento fa una scelta ben precisa circa il produttore di tessuto e possibilità per il consumatore di conoscere bene cosa sta indossando.

Questo comporta, in qualche modo, un rapporto più stretto tra i tessutai e gli stilisti?

“Penso di sì – continua Marini – credo che l’ultima tendenza anche per noi sia quella di cercare clienti che ci somigliano, che condividono le nostre scelte industriali.

Il rapporto e la collaborazione coi clienti e l’impegno per una precisa conoscenza del mercato e di tutte le sue esigenze ci sono sempre stati, ma oggi sono amplificati”.

Dal punto di vista aziendale, Marini Industrie come sta vivendo questi anni non semplici?

Siamo contenti e siamo riusciti a crescere negli ultimi tre anni grazie al fatto che vendiamo soprattutto all’estero, in una proporzione del 70-30%. Ora, anche alla luce dell’andamento di dollaro e yen, abbiamo deciso di investire anche per un riposizionamento in Europa e ovviamente in Italia. La cosa che ci pare positiva è che le grandi griffe stanno iniziando a ricomprare in Italia, dopo un periodo di ‘fuga’ verso nuovi mercati, molti hanno capito che la vera innovazione, la vera qualità è qui.

Vi relazionate solo con grandi marchi o puntate anche sui giovani designer?

Ovviamente le grandi griffe sono una sicurezza e intendo nomi di primissimo livello: da Armani a Max Mara. Si tratta di aziende che hanno strutture importanti che consentono loro di vendere in ogni parte del mondo e questo le rafforza anche sul mercato domestico o comunque consente loro di rimanerci presenti nonostante la scarsa propensione all’acquisto che qui è stata manifestata negli ultimi anni. Ovviamente però ci sono anche gli stilisti emergenti che non possono essere ignorati: talvolta non è facile fare affari con loro perché non hanno una struttura solida alle spalle, non sempre ci sono garanzie sufficienti oppure le quantità richieste sono davvero esigue. the country’s little propensity to consume in the past few years. However, there are some up-and-coming designers that cannot be ignored, but it is not always easy to do business with them, as they have no sound structure behind them, they offer no guarantees and place very small orders. Anyway, I believe that young designers are an investment that any textile company should not hesitate to make, budget permitting, thinking about not tomorrow, but in the long term, let’s say five to ten years. We work with some young talented designers - Damier Doma, Massimo Giorgetti, Andrea Incontri- who are beginning to make big figures, investments that are now bearing fruit.

In short, a lot of reasoning and very few improvised solutions behind corporate strategy compared with a few decades ago.

Certainly. Today there must be an overall vision covering all aspects of the industrial field, including communication and marketing, which does not necessarily require a lot of money for investments. A bit of synergy is enough, as well as not being too small-sized: today small is dangerous.

Are you optimistic about the future?

Yes I am, we are finally beginning to see the light at the end of the tunnel: there might be a few more shaky seasons, but now is the time to invest and get ready for the real economic recovery.

Also Sandro Ciardi, president of Pratotrade and one of Prato’s most dynamic and innovative entrepreneurs, is confident in the Pratese district’s potential.

Do the well-known designer names still love Prato?

Yes they do. The world’s leading fashion brands search for niche products for their signature lines and they find them in Prato.

Luckily, Prato produces also second-line and pre-collection products: quality items but more commercial-like, the ones that help making big volumes, that keep the companies going. Prato’s textile companies are still very winter season-oriented but they are increasingly diversifying, which is very good news.

Do the young designers come to Prato?

Yes, of course, it is a fixed route, although in the past three or four years very few promising names have appeared on the horizon.

Building a career is very difficult for young designers, and creating a structure that supports them is economically hard to sustain, no matter how talented you are. It is no chance that the young designers who have recently risen to fame work for some big designer brands that believed in them. I’m referring to Kenzo or Valentino, which welcomed some young people lately. Speaking about spaces and opportunities for young people, I have to say that Florence does much better than Milan: just take a look at those participating in the fashion shows, the usual people.

In what market is Prato growing the most?

Prato is doing very well with the big French and British designer names, owing to the top-level research work it offers, in addition to innovation and product quality. All the more the reason for Italian fashion houses, among the best in the world, to take advantage of local manufactures. Unfortunately, that is not always the case. tratta insomma, in molti casi, di un investimento che un’azienda credo debba fare, compatibilmente col proprio budget, guardando non a domani ma a un periodo più lungo che può essere di cinque o dieci anni. Penso ad alcuni nomi emergenti con cui collaboriamo che ora cominciano a fare numeri interessanti: Damier Doma, Massimo Giorgetti, Andrea Incontri, investimenti che stanno dando i loro frutti.

Molto ragionamento, insomma, dietro alla strategia aziendale, poca improvvisazione rispetto a qualche decennio fa.

Sicuramente. Oggi deve esserci una vision completa che tocca tutti i settori dell’attività industriale, comprese la comunicazione e la promozione. E questo non significa necessariamente cifre enormi da investire, talvolta basta fare un po’ di sinergia e soprattutto raggiungere una dimensione minima che non è troppo piccola: oggi essere piccoli è pericoloso.

Ritiene di poter essere positivo per il futuro?

Sì, mi pare che davvero si intraveda la fine del tunnel: probabilmente ci saranno ancora un paio di stagioni traballanti, ma questo è il momento di prepararsi, di investire, per essere pronti alla vera ripresa.

Fiducia sulle potenzialità del distretto pratese vengono manifestate anche da Sandro Ciardi, presidente di Pratotrade, ma anche uno dei più dinamici e innovativi operatori del tessile pratese e non solo.

Le griffe amano ancora Prato?

Assolutamente sì. Le grandi griffe mondiali cercano articoli di nicchia per le loro prime linee e li trovano a Prato. Per fortuna però oggi Prato produce anche articoli adatti alle seconde linee e alle precollezioni: articoli assolutamente di qualità ma più commerciali, quelli che danno anche numeri più importanti. In sostanza quegli articoli che fanno andare avanti le aziende. Ovviamente ci resta una forte vocazione per la stagione invernale, ma sempre più le aziende del distretto si stanno diversificando e credo che questo sia molto positivo.

E i giovani stilisti si stanno avvicinando a Prato?

Ovviamente sì, è un passaggio obbligato, anche se devo dire che gli ultimi tre o quattro anni sono stati aridi di nuovi nomi che possono far pensare ad un futuro radioso. Del resto va detto che per i giovani stilisti la strada è molto difficile, è difficile ed economicamente molto oneroso creare una struttura che consenta di emergere ed affermarsi, nonostante le capacità. Non a caso ultimamente i nomi nuovi hanno acquistato fama e visibilità soprattutto quando sono entrati nell’orbita di qualche grande griffe che ha creduto in loro. Penso a Kenzo o a Valentino che hanno accolto dei giovani. A proposito di spazi e opportunità dati ai giovani, devo dire che Firenze fa molto di più che Milano: basta guardare i nomi che sfilano a Milano,per lo più i soliti noti.

Quali sono i mercati nei quali Prato sta avendo maggiori riscontri?

Prato si sta inserendo molto bene anche nei circuiti delle griffe francesi e inglesi, sempre per l’altissimo livello di ricerca che garantiscono, oltre che per l’innovazione e la qualità del prodotto. Certo verrebbe da pensare che le maison italiane, tra le maggiori al mondo, attingessero a questo bacino di produzione eccellente che hanno in casa, purtroppo non è sempre così.

Since the 2014 fair trade calendar starts, as never before, very close to Christmas festivities, let us indulge ourselves in the sweet side of Christmas and Epiphany, discovering the Paradise of sweets and cakes in Florence, Milan and Paris.

Let’s start by introducing the places that connect, like an imaginary chocolate “fil rouge”, the various parts of Florence. At the Caffé Giacosa -10r, via della Spada- the choice is really wide: handmade traditional Pandoro or Panettone, soft nougat, Panforte, macarons, cinnamon cookies. And you can also find a cake on sale in a Cavalli designer box. At Caffè Florian -28, via del Parione- you will find the best from the Venetian tradition: coffee, chocolates, perfumes, porcelain items and art objects. At 1r, via Roma, is Caffè Gilli, which is a must in Florence: both a café and a pastry and chocolate shop, it boasts a history of over 250 years. Some not-to-miss specialties at Caffè Rainer -97r, via Zanobi: Sacher Torte, Strudel, coffee flavored Cardinal Cake, Stollen Cake and hand-made French macarons.

The Mama’s Bakery -34r, via della Chiesa- produces international specialties like muffins, cupcakes and traditional American cookies.

And don’t forget to stop at the Pazkowski Caffè Concerto at 6r in Piazza della Repubblica, a historic pastry shop and café in Florence.

The Torta Pistocchi -20, via del Ponte di Mezzo- is the reign of intense flavors and chocolate, with for example its Torta Pistocchi dark chocolate cake made with bitter cocoa powder and just a little cream, without preservatives or thickeners. Then the flavors from Piedmont Visto che il calendario fieristico 2014 inizia come mai in precedenza così vicino alle festività natalizie non lasciamo che la Befana porti via la dolcezza e scopriamo dove, a Firenze, Milano e Parigi, zuccheri e delizie hanno il loro paradiso. Con un immaginario fil rouge di cioccolato che unisce le città iniziamo da Firenze. Al Caffè Giacosa, in via della Spada 10r, c’è l’imbarazzo della scelta tra pandoro e panettone di produzione propria, torrone morbido, panforte, macarons, biscotti alla cannella. E c’è anche la torta racchiusa nella scatola griffata Cavalli.

Al Caffè Florian, in via del Parione 28, la tradizione arriva da Venezia, tra caffè, cioccolato profumi, porcellane e oggetti d’arte. Il Caffè Gilli, in via Roma 1r è un must della città con caffetteria, pasticceria e cioccolateria con oltre 250 anni di storia. Al Caffè Rainer, in via San Zanobi 97r, da non perdere Sacher, Strudel, torta Cardinale al caffé, Stollen e macarons francesi artigianali. Gusti più internazionali al Mama’s Bakery, in via della Chiesa 34r, dove si producono muffins, cupcakes e biscotti tipici americani. Da non dimenticare una sosta al Paszkowski Caffè Concerto, in piazza della Repubblica 6r, una pasticceria e caffetteria storica di Firenze. Sapori intensi al Torta Pistocchi, in via del Ponte di Mezzo 20, dove il cioccolato la fa da padrone, con ad esempio la torta omonima a base di solo cru di cioccolato fondente, cacao amaro in polvere e poca crema di latte senza conservanti nè addensanti. When the doors of Milano Unica will open in Milan, the traditional Christmas cakes will definitely be a memory, but this is not a good reason to give up eating sweets between one day at the fair and the next, because if we talk about “sweet” places in Milan, you really have an embarrassing wealth of options. At 14, via Cagliero, Martesana offers above all small pastries: small fruit tarts, Krumiri cookies and mousses served in small glasses. Then the soft Martesana paradise cake filled with custard. While at the famous Giacomo fish restaurant -5, via Pasquale Sottocorno- you can end your dinner with desserts like the Cannoncini (Puff Pastry Horns), the small chocolate cakes or the Millefoglie.

Still following the chocolate “fil rouge” from Florence to Milan, we can find here the best chocolate cakes at Ernst Kram -10, via Alfonsiwhose owner is famous for his Three-Chocolate- Mousse and desserts like the African cakes, the Singapore Mousse with tropical fruits and the Chocolate Bricks. But another reign of chocolate is Le Dolci Tradizioni at 122 of via Ampere: suffice it to say that its owner, Marcello Martinangeli, has been Official Pastry Chef at the Olympiads in London for the Italian team. Here the Colomba (Easter Dove) is amazing.

And the last chocolate place we suggest is Massimo-5, via Ripamonti- which is famous for its hot chocolate, which can turn any long and tiring workday into a day of good. And if you want to add more calories you can try the “Mousse Francesca”.

Those who have time to have a good breakfast before entering the fair, the reference address is 6, Piazza Risorgimento, at Sissi, whose very good pastries and chocolate and coffee mousses compensate for the staff, said to be the most unfriendly of Milan. While the best croissant in piazza del Mercato Nuovo 6: la boutique della storica azienda di cioccolato, offre gli imperdibili il Chocaviar, i diablotin alla vaniglia e la crema spalmabile. Chiusura di dolcezze in riva all’Arno con Vestri, in Borgo degli Albizi 11: cioccolateria, gelateria e pasticceria, tra le specialità il panforte, i cantuccini e i ricciarelli.

Quando si apriranno le porte di Milano Unica il ricordo del panettone sarà ormai lontano ma non è questo un buon motivo per rinunciare ai dolci tra una giornata e l’altra di fiera. Anche perché all’ombra della Madunina in tema di prelibatezze “zuccherose” c’è l’imbarazzo della scelta.

Da Martesana, in via Cagliero 14, domina la piccola pasticceria: crostatine, crumiri e mousse concentrate in bicchierini. E poi c’è la Martesana, soffice torta paradiso farcita di crema pasticcera. Da Giacomo, in via Pasquale Sottocorno 5, già rinomato ristorante di pesce, si può finire la cena con cannoncini, tortini al cioccolato e millefoglie. Il cioccolato, trai t d’union con Firenze, si trova al suo massimo livello da Ernst Knam, in via Anfossi 10, visto che il proprietario è noto per la sua mousse ai tre cioccolati, alla quale si aggiungono torte africane, mousse Singapore con i frutti tropicali e i lingotti di cioccolato. Cacao al potere anche da Le dolci tradizioni, in via Ampere 122: basti dire che il proprietario, Marcello Martinangeli, è stato il pasticcere ufficiale della squadra italiana alle Olimpiadi di Londra. Ottima la colomba.

Chiusura al gusto di cioccolato da Massimo, in via Ripamonti 5, famoso per la cioccolata in tazza che, a febbraio, può capovolgere da sola l’andazzo di una lunga e snervante gionata lavorativa. Per chi vuol aggiungere calorie c’è la “mousse Francesca”. Chi ha tempo di regalarsi una buona colazione prima di entrare in fiera l’indirizzo di riferimento è Sissi, in piazza Risorgimento 6,doveal la fama di commessi più scorbutici della città fa da contraltare la bontà delle paste e delle mousse al cioccolato e al caffè. Forse qualche concessione deve essere fatta anche al budget, perché a Parigi la qualità attrae gli euro in modo proporzionale ma una tantum ci si può concedere un lusso non legato alla moda o alla gioielleria. Non c’è quindi da stupirsi se in qualche chocolaterie i prodotti vengono presentati come se fossero dei veri e propri gioielli. E’ il caso della suggestiva, per bellezza del negozio e locazione, Un Dimanche à Paris, al numero 4 del Cour du Commerce Saint Andrè, una splendida galleria che unisce il Boulevard Saint-Germain con rue Saint-Andrè des Arts in un susseguirsi di eccellenze gastronomiche, a iniziare da Le Procope, uno dei più vecchi ristoranti della capitale francese.

Da Un Dimanche à Paris il cioccolato è declinato in tutte le sue versioni: cioccolatini mignon, crema spalmabile e addirittura il foie gras al cacao. Spazio a parte per i macarons, esposti in tanti colori pastello sugli scaffali.
