Certainly, “il ragazzo della via Gluck” (he of the 60s song about the urbanization of Milan’s outskirts), lived in a completely different environment, but if he looked around now, he’d realize that Milan is a decidedly greener city than many others. Not only for its lovely internal courtyards, the rooftops and balconies lush with greenery, or iconic buildings such as the Vertical Forest, but also for the numerous parks and gardens with which it is studded. Here for you are the most beautiful.

PARCO SEMPIONE

The city centre’s green lung, situated between two of its symbols - Castello Sforzesco and the Arch of Peace. Restoration works completed in 2003 doubled its overall area to 386,000 square metres, 22 times the size of Piazza Duomo. It was originally the garden of the Sforza family, rulers of the Duchy of Milan. Located within the park are the Triennale Design Museum, Arena Civica, the Torre

Branca, designed by Gio Ponti, and the Aquarium.

INDRO MONTANELLI GARDENS

Named after Indro Montanelli in 2002, it was Milan’s first public park, created between 1782 and 1786 and designed by architect Giuseppe Piermarini (who also designed La Scala Theatre). In the mid-19th century, architect Giuseppe Balzaretto extended the layout of the gardens as far as Palazzo Dugnani. In addition to the latter, highlights of the park are the Natural History Museum and the Ulrico Hoepli Planetarium.

Between the Polyclinic Hospital and University is this small Italianate garden, created at the request of Paola Ludovica Torelli, Countess Guastalla, in 1555. One of Milan’s oldest parks, it contains a delightful 18th-century fish pond populated by carp and goldfish, a neoclassical temple by Luigi Cagnola and a 17th century shrine depicting Mary Magdalene and angels.

BRERA BOTANICAL GARDENS

What was simply the garden of Palazzo Brera was transformed into a botanical garden intended for study in the second half of the 18th century by Empress Maria Theresa of

Austria. In the same period, the adjacent astronomical observatory was established. Among the many plants present are two of the oldest gingko bilobas in Europe, a 40-meter-tall lime tree and a Caucasian walnut.

PARCO BIBLIOTECA DEGLI ALBERI DI MILANO (BAM)

A public park and also a botanical garden in the Porta Nuova-Isola area. Inaugurated in 2018, it has been described as one of Europe’s most innovative parks, and compared to a library given the organization in ‘plant rooms’ with more than 100 different species, 500 trees arranged in 22 rings and 135,000 plants. The fountain, with spectacular water and light effects, is active from May

to September.

PARCO PAPA GIOVANNI PAOLO II

It is a sort of green corridor connecting the Basilica of San Lorenzo and the Basilica of Sant’Eustorgio, more suitable for relaxing and taking a break, as Milanese students often do, than to sporting activities such as jogging. The entrance is from behind the Basilica of San Lorenzo, with its spectacular apse that acts as a stunning backdrop. Designed by architects Bagatti Valsecchi and Grandi, it was conceived as an archaeological walk between the two basilicas, the columns of San Lorenzo and the ruins of the Roman amphitheatre on Corso di Porta Ticinese.

Fondazione Arnaldo Pomodoro, a fascinating experience for art lovers

Founded in 1995 by the sculptor Arnaldo Pomodoro, Fondazione Arnaldo Pomodoro is one of Milan’s most active foundations in terms of number of events. A place of exquisite culture that focuses on 20th-century art while leaving plenty of room for the work of young artists and creating the ideal shared space for all art lovers. In its mission to disseminate the heritage of contemporary art, over the years the Foundation has organised numerous shows and initiatives, including the Arnaldo Pomodoro Sculpture Prize and the Project Room series of exhibitions, as well as the digitalisation of an archive destined to make history. Until 9th June, Whisperers by Lito Kattou (Cyprus) kicks off Corpo Celeste, the new exhibition

cycle from Project Room, the Foundation’s observatory programme - focusing on the possibility of re-thinking and reimagining reality in an age of crisis - this year curated by Chiara Nuzzi. Alongside Whisperers, the next event is also presented, an exhibition by Paul Maheke (France) in September. In both shows, sculpture is the tool for the

construction of other bodies, which are crossed with materials, nature and the animal world to inhabit new realms. Within these visionary settings, Kattou and Maheke explore the potential of sculptural materials, creating environments and narratives that analyse the present by interrogating the future. It’s all done with impressive installations in aluminium, steel, acrylic, nickel-plated copper and biodegradable plastic, which invade the space with metaphysical sensations to represent the cultural evolution of humankind, reflect on our coexistence with other species and protect the planet. It’s also a great opportunity to visit the adjoining permanent section, containing the sculptures of Arnaldo Pomodoro, the most italian famous living artist (1926).

EL BRELLIN

Lombard tradition is kept alive in the beautiful setting of Vicolo dei Lavandai, where an old grocery shop once stood. Today, it is the location of the El Brellin café and restaurant which still maintains the atmosphere of that old place and era. Among the must-try dishes, we recommend its cutlet, strictly prepared with veal served on the bone and cooked in clarified butter (Vicolo dei Lavandai, Alzaia Naviglio Grande, 14).

La Libera is a typical restaurant of old Milan located in the Brera district, the perfect place if you want to try traditional Milanese dishes. They call it the pearl of Lake Garda, and its castle in the water is like nothing else in the world. This is beautiful Sirmione, which occupies a delightful peninsula on the Lombardy side of Italy’s largest lake.

SCALIGER CASTLE

Watching over the ancient town centre is the magnificent Scaliger Castle, its position originally defensive and today extraordinarily picturesque. It’s one of Italy’s best-preserved 14th-century castles, built on the ruins of a Roman fortress. There are many legends surrounding this enchanted castle surrounded by water; the most famous concerns the ghost of the marquess Elaberto, who wanders the rooms on stormy nights in search of his beloved, whom he was unable to save.

Sirmione has also been known, since at least Roman times, for its wonderful sulphur, bromide and iodide thermal springs, still used today for their preventive, therapeutic and rehabilitative properties. CASTELLO SFORZESCO

It was originally a fortress built by Gian Galeazzo Visconti in the 15th century. One hundred years later, Francesco Sforza made it his noble residence after taking possession of Milan. Ludovico Sforza founded one of the most sophisticated courts in Europe and called the best artists of the time to embellish the castle, including Leonardo da Vinci and Filarete. The imposing building today is a unique museum complex divided into the Civic Museums, which house permanent exhibitions and a rich program of temporary art shows and events. Located in the square that shares its name, the Duomo is dedicated to Santa Maria Nascente and is Italy’s largest church. Symbol and protector of the Milanese people, the Madonnina is made in beaten and gilded copper plates, today supported by a framework of stainless steel. Designed by Giuseppe Mengoni, this shopping center’s foundation stone was laid in 1865 by Vittorio Emanuele II, hence its name. From its inception, the Galleria was a meeting place for the Milanese bourgeois, earning it the nickname Milan’s living room. It has a cross plan with an octagonal iron and glass roof, 47 metres high. The visitor’s gaze is drawn toward the floor mosaics, which represent the coats of arms of Rome, Flor-

NECCHI CAMPIGLIO HOUSE MUSEUM

Nestled in a large private garden with swimming pool and tennis court downtown Milan, Villa Necchi Campiglio was completed in 1935. It was designed by architect Piero Portaluppi for the Necchi Campiglio family, members of Milan’s wealthy and elegant upper middle class in the 1930s. THE COURTYARD OF CASA ROSSI

This building is a great example of eclectic architecture. It was built by Giuseppe Pestagalli in the 1860s and features a Neo-Renaissance façade on the outside. If you stand in the middle of the courtyard open to the public and you look up, you will see how its structure frames a portion of the blue sky in a perfect octagon.

The bicycle is a green and convenient way of getting around in the city. Bike Sharing is available, either from fixed collection and drop-off stations, or with free-flow bikes. The BikeMi service operated by ATM and the Municipali-

You can also choose a daily ticket (€7), a three-day ticket (€12) and other options.

METRO

With five lines, 111 stations and 94.5 kilometres of rails, Milan’s metro system is the largest in Italy. It operates every day from 6:00 to 00:30 (7:00 to 19:30 on 25 December and 1 May). The frequency of trains at major stations varies from 2 to 4 minutes, depending on the month and the timetable.

TRAIN

Milano Centrale station is the main hub connecting Milan to major Italian and European cities, and Cadorna station offers links to destinations in Lombardy. Other state-run railway stations are Garibaldi, Lambrate, Milano Rogoredo and Porta Genova. The

main overland stations correspond with the metro lines, making travel in the area easy and quick.
