PARCO SEMPIONE FEATURES
THE PERFECT MIX OF OUTDOOR ACTIVITIES LIKE THE TRIUMPHAL ARCO DELLA PACE
AS WELL AS BEAUTIFUL HISTORIC ARCHITECTURE
Certainly, “il ragazzo della via Gluck” (he of the 60s song about the urbanization of Milan’s outskirts), lived in a completely different environment, but if he looked around now, he’d realize that Milan is a decidedly greener city than many others. Not only for its lovely internal courtyards, the rooftops and balconies lush with greenery, or iconic buildings such as the Vertical Forest, but also for the numerous parks and gardens with which it is studded. Here for you are the most beautiful.
PARCO SEMPIONE
The city centre’s green lung, situated between two of its symbols - Castello Sforzesco and the Arch of Peace. Restoration works completed in 2003 doubled its overall area to 386,000 square metres, 22 times the size of Piazza Duomo. It was originally the garden of the Sforza family, rulers of the Duchy of Milan. Located within the park are the Triennale Design Museum, Arena Civica, the Torre
Branca, designed by Gio Ponti, and the Aquarium.
INDRO MONTANELLI GARDENS
Named after Indro Montanelli in 2002, it was Milan’s first public park, created between 1782 and 1786 and designed by architect Giuseppe Piermarini (who also designed La Scala Theatre). In the mid-19th century, architect Giuseppe Balzaretto extended the layout of the gardens as far as Palazzo Dugnani. In addition to the latter, highlights of the park are the Natural History Museum and the Ulrico Hoepli Planetarium.
VILLA BELGIOJOSO BONAPARTE GARDEN
Across Via Palestro is the magnificent Villa Reale, also known as Villa Belgiojoso Bonaparte, the home of GAM (Milan Modern Art Gallery), overlooking a beautiful garden, one of the first examples of an English-style garden in Milan. 24,000 enchanting square metres, with bridges and a romantic pavilion surrounded an arti-

GUASTALLA GARDEN
Between the Polyclinic Hospital and University is this small Italianate garden, created at the request of Paola Ludovica Torelli, Countess Guastalla, in 1555. One of Milan’s oldest parks, it contains a delightful 18th-century fish pond populated by carp and goldfish, a neoclassical temple by Luigi Cagnola and a 17th century shrine depicting Mary Magdalene and angels.
BRERA BOTANICAL GARDENS
What was simply the garden of Palazzo Brera was transformed into a botanical garden intended for study in the second half of the 18th century by Empress Maria Theresa of
Austria. In the same period, the adjacent astronomical observatory was established. Among the many plants present are two of the oldest gingko bilobas in Europe, a 40-meter-tall lime tree and a Caucasian walnut.
PARCO BIBLIOTECA DEGLI ALBERI DI MILANO (BAM)
A public park and also a botanical garden in the Porta Nuova-Isola area. Inaugurated in 2018, it has been described as one of Europe’s most innovative parks, and compared to a library given the organization in ‘plant rooms’ with more than 100 different species, 500 trees arranged in 22 rings and 135,000 plants. The fountain, with spectacular water and light effects, is active from May
to September.
PARCO PAPA GIOVANNI PAOLO II
It is a sort of green corridor connecting the Basilica of San Lorenzo and the Basilica of Sant’Eustorgio, more suitable for relaxing and taking a break, as Milanese students often do, than to sporting activities such as jogging. The entrance is from behind the Basilica of San Lorenzo, with its spectacular apse that acts as a stunning backdrop. Designed by architects Bagatti Valsecchi and Grandi, it was conceived as an archaeological walk between the two basilicas, the columns of San Lorenzo and the ruins of the Roman amphitheatre on Corso di Porta Ticinese.

DISCOVERING MILANO
Fondazione Arnaldo Pomodoro, a fascinating experience for art lovers
Founded in 1995 by the sculptor Arnaldo Pomodoro, Fondazione Arnaldo Pomodoro is one of Milan’s most active foundations in terms of number of events. A place of exquisite culture that focuses on 20th-century art while leaving plenty of room for the work of young artists and creating the ideal shared space for all art lovers. In its mission to disseminate the heritage of contemporary art, over the years the Foundation has organised numerous shows and initiatives, including the Arnaldo Pomodoro Sculpture Prize and the Project Room series of exhibitions, as well as the digitalisation of an archive destined to make history. Until 9th June, Whisperers by Lito Kattou (Cyprus) kicks off Corpo Celeste, the new exhibition
cycle from Project Room, the Foundation’s observatory programme - focusing on the possibility of re-thinking and reimagining reality in an age of crisis - this year curated by Chiara Nuzzi. Alongside Whisperers, the next event is also presented, an exhibition by Paul Maheke (France) in September. In both shows, sculpture is the tool for the
construction of other bodies, which are crossed with materials, nature and the animal world to inhabit new realms. Within these visionary settings, Kattou and Maheke explore the potential of sculptural materials, creating environments and narratives that analyse the present by interrogating the future. It’s all done with impressive installations in aluminium, steel, acrylic, nickel-plated copper and biodegradable plastic, which invade the space with metaphysical sensations to represent the cultural evolution of humankind, reflect on our coexistence with other species and protect the planet. It’s also a great opportunity to visit the adjoining permanent section, containing the sculptures of Arnaldo Pomodoro, the most italian famous living artist (1926).

PASSIONATE FOR THE MILANESE VEAL CUTLET!
The best locations to try this typical food Milan
The authentic Milanese cutlet ofValentinoLegend
TEXT Martina Olivieri
LET’S DISCOVER THE MOST RENOWNED RESTAURANTS WHERE YOU CAN TRY THIS ESSENTIAL DISH
Each time the tourist arrives in Milan for the first time, they always ask this question: “Where can I eat the best Milanese veal cutlet in Milan?”. The cutlet is one of the symbols of Lombard cuisine. Called cutelèta in the local dialect. It probably takes its name from the French côtelette which refers to the cut chosen for this recipe: the veal sirloin. It is a delicious dish that you really must try during your stay in the city. Available in two different versions – thick with the bone or very thin without it – it needs to be
cooked to perfection using quality veal cuts and clarified butter. To achieve the perfect degree of crispness and fragrance, the breading must be golden and crunchy. Every step of the preparation, from the choice of ingredients and the softness of the meat to the temperature of the flame, it is important to cook this simple dish to perfection. But where can you eat the best cutlets in town? Check out our list below to discover the most renowned restaurants where you can try this essential dish of the culinary culture of Milan.

TRATTORIA DE LA TREBIA
The best words to describe the Trattoria De La Trebia are tradition and simplicity. It is the ideal location for any special occasion, whether you go with your partner, family or friends. The positive energy of the Masciullo family can be felt in every part of the restaurant and especially in its cuisine. Their Milanese veal cutlet is a real delicacy, prepared according to tradition using a thin cut without the bone and extra-crunchy breading (Via Trebbia, 32).
VALENTINO LEGEND
Located just steps away from the Duomo, the Valentino Legend is one of Milan’s historic restaurants. A must-go place for traditional food lovers who want a refined and elegant ambience. At the Valentino Legend you can discover the most authentic Milanese recipes such as saffron risotto with osso buco, the typical mondeghili meatballs and the unmissable cutlet (Via Agnello, 8
SOLFERINO
Established in 1909, the Solferino delights its customers with its traditional Milanese cuisine including both fish and meat dishes, as well as excellent vegetarian ones. It was recently renovated, but it still maintains its elegance of the past. Here you can try the Milanese veal cutlet served with rocket and cherry tomatoes for an unforgettable experience (Via Castelfidardo, 2).
FOOD 43
RIGOLO
Located in the heart of the Brera district, the Rigolo will delight you with its refined Milanese and Tuscan cuisine. You can try iconic dishes such as the Milanese veal cutlet but also pappa al pomodoro and castagnaccio. Each day of the week is dedicated to a different traditional dish and there are always plenty of delicious seafood dishes to choose from on the menu (Via Solferino, 11).
ROSSO DI BRERA
Since its opening, the Rosso Brera managed with elegance and simplicity, presents itself as an intimate place, almost the living room of a private house. Its offers traditional dishes prepared with creativity and well-balanced flavours. For a delicious main course, order the veal cutlet, well breaded and fried, strictly served without cherry tomatoes or rocket. A real must-try dish (Via Marco Formentini, 7).
CANTINA DELLA VETRA
The Cantina della Vetra offers a beautiful view of the ancient Basilica of San Lorenzo alle Colonne from its large windows. The restaurant is also a wine cellar and offers typical products and Emilian specialities. Its décor includes late 19th-century furnishings and counter, and typical peasant objects and utensils. Its cuisine is a delicious blend of traditional and international which will delight you with every dish (Via della Spiga, 26).

EL BRELLIN
Lombard tradition is kept alive in the beautiful setting of Vicolo dei Lavandai, where an old grocery shop once stood. Today, it is the location of the El Brellin café and restaurant which still maintains the atmosphere of that old place and era. Among the must-try dishes, we recommend its cutlet, strictly prepared with veal served on the bone and cooked in clarified butter (Vicolo dei Lavandai, Alzaia Naviglio Grande, 14).
DELICIOUS AND TRADITIONAL
LA LIBERA
La Libera is a typical restaurant of old Milan located in the Brera district, the perfect place if you want to try traditional Milanese dishes. A JEWEL SET IN THE WATER
Sirmione, pearl of Lake Garda, and the beauty of an ancient past
TEXT Virginia Mammoli
They call it the pearl of Lake Garda, and its castle in the water is like nothing else in the world. This is beautiful Sirmione, which occupies a delightful peninsula on the Lombardy side of Italy’s largest lake.
SCALIGER CASTLE
Watching over the ancient town centre is the magnificent Scaliger Castle, its position originally defensive and today extraordinarily picturesque. It’s one of Italy’s best-preserved 14th-century castles, built on the ruins of a Roman fortress. There are many legends surrounding this enchanted castle surrounded by water; the most famous concerns the ghost of the marquess Elaberto, who wanders the rooms on stormy nights in search of his beloved, whom he was unable to save.
There are three crenellated towers and a keep rising over forty metres. The nearly 150 stairs to the

wall walk allow visitors to enjoy one of the most stunning views of the lake. The castle’s wet dock was built about a century later, alongside a defensive wall around the town, one of whose corner towers can still be seen near the church of Santa Maria Maggiore.
In the shade of the castle walls, protected from the summer sun, is the lovely Spiaggia delle Muse, starting point for a panoramic pedestrian walkway; perhaps to enjoy while sipping a fresh juice made from the celebrated Garda lemons
GROTTOES OF CATULLUS
At the very tip of the Sirmione peninsula lie the famous Grottoes of Catullus, which are actually not caves at all, but the ruins of a wealthy Roman villa. The curious name is a hangover from the Renaissance, when it was custo-

OLD TOWN
Between the castle and the Grottoes of Catullus lies the charming town with its tangle of narrow streets, where we find more evidence of the Roman past; the villa of Maria Callas - who fell in love with Sirmione to the point that her husband Giovanni Battista Meneghini bought a house so she could spend her holidays here - and the fascinating church of San Pietro in Mavino, Sirmione’s most ancient, built in the Lombard period of the 8th century and containing 14th-century frescoes.
Sirmione has also been known, since at least Roman times, for its wonderful sulphur, bromide and iodide thermal springs, still used today for their preventive, therapeutic and rehabilitative properties. Hence the town’s stunning and exclusive spa centres, whose warm water also reaches one of the island’s prettiest beaches, Spiaggia delle Bionde (from ‘biunda’, meaning ‘enclosed place’), with its romantic natural pool.
ON THE WATER AROUND SIRMIONE
If you want to see all Sirmione’s historical and natural attractions, don’t miss the opportunity for a boat - or canoe - trip, to collect breathtaking views and wonderful glimpses of all the places we’ve mentioned - the Scaliger Castle, the Grottoes of Catullus, the thermal baths, Villa Callas - from a unique angle.

THE VILLAGE OF LOVE
A guide to Varenna, a hidden gem on Lake Como with spectacular scenery for unforgettable moments
TEXT Martina Olivieri
With its many colourful houses overlooking the lake, the mountains creating a spectacular backdrop, the picturesque alleys, the panoramic restaurants where you can enjoy a memorable dinner and the wonderful historic villas, Varenna is the perfect place for a dream holiday. This beautiful and picturesque location attracts tourists from all over the world every year who fall in love with the village. It is engulfed in a magical atmosphere, especially at sunset when the warm colours of the lake illuminate the colourful façades of the houses built alongside the shoreline.
THINGS TO DO
Most certainly, one of the nicest ways to reach Varenna is to walk along the Path
of Love, a walkway alongside the lake which connects the pier to the village’s historic centre. Only a few hundred metres away for an endless romantic experience. From here, you can admire the lake, the mountains, the little colourful houses at the
COLOURFUL HOUSES OVERLOOKING THE LAKE, PICTURESQUE ALLEYS, PANORAMIC RESTAURANTS AND WONDERFUL HISTORIC VILLAS
edge of the rocky wall and the Castle of Vezio, which dates back to the 12th-13th century and features a majestic tower dominating the village. Walking along this walkway, you can reach the village with its steep alleys and picturesque spots. The heart of the village is its main square with the beautiful Church of San Giorgio, a great example of 14th-century Lombard architecture. Just a stone’s throw away at the opposite side of the square, you can admire the 11th-century Church of San Giovanni Battista, which features well-preserved 16th-century frescoes in the apse and on the triumphal arch. After walking through its most picturesque streets, you will reach Lake Como where you can admire Villa Monastero. It was once a convent of Cistercian nuns and today, it is one of the most popular attractions with its house museum and a beautiful botanical garden

WHERE TO STAY
In the romantic village of Varenna, there are two hotels of the R Collection Hotels Group, the Royal Victoria Hotel and the Villa Cipressi, two of the town’s landmarks and a perfect example of the typical architecture of Lake Como with a sophisticated, private and pleasant ambience. The Royal Victoria Hotel is an ancient patrician residence which has been turned into a very charming and elegant 4star hotel. Its historic furnishings help to create a fairytale atmosphere, also thanks to the lake view admired from its many rooms and suites, as well as the enchanting view of the old village’s square offered by some rooms. The Villa Cipressi hotel is a historic 19th-century residence which features pre-exist-
ing 15th- and 17th-century elements, perfectly integrated into the building. The renovation project was able to enhance the rooms and their features from the precious chandeliers to the carved wood furniture in the style of Lake Como to the 15th-century frescoes painted in vivid and deep local colours. A feature which characterises and makes these two hotels unique is their magnificent Botanical Garden, which can also be visited from outside. Hospitality here is an added value, as Lorenzo Pacifico, director of the hotels, explained: ‘Our objective is to guarantee our guests special and personalised stays, as well as a wide choice of dishes. Starting from this year, we have also the new Visteria fine dining restaurant with a spectacular view, which has expanded our gastronomic offer with excellent fine dining cuisine. The season has just begun, but it seems almost as if we are already in the summer; tourists are showing a lot of interest in our hotels and restaurants’.

RISORGIMENTO MUSEUM
Established in 1885, the museum has been located in the 18th -century Palazzo Morrigia, designed in 1775 by Giuseppe Piermarini close to the vast Brera complex, since 1951. In 1900, the Palazzo- which during Napoleon’s age housed the Ministry of Foreign Affairs and, later on, the Ministry of War- became the property of the De Marchi family and then donated to the City of Milan
by the wife of the famous naturalist Marco De Marchi and converted into a museum. The collections illustrate the period of Italian history from Napoleon’s first Italian campaign (1796) to Rome’s annexation to the Kingdom of Italy (1870).

PALAZZO INA
There are many entrances with a recognisable appearance scattered throughout Milan, all designed by some of the most famous architects of the 20th century. But the most instagrammed? The entrance hall of Palazzo Ina by modernist architect Piero Bottoni, who also designed Monte Stella and Qt8. An atrium with Palladian Carrara marble flooring, while the walls are covered with powder pink and cobalt blue tiles: a perfect mix for Instagram.
Corso Sempione, 33
VIA LINCOLN
Low-rise houses, pastel shades, small balconies and flower gardens. The houses in Via Lincoln, a former working-class district now known as the Rainbow district are all painted in different colours. Some even gave it the nickname of Milanese Burano, and it is a sought-after place by those who, in addition to the monuments, want to discover the city’s secret and unusual places.
FONDAZIONE PRADA
The architecture of the museum offers a varied choice of views and panoramas to take a good photo. For example, the Upside Down Mushroom Room: a dreamlike installation by Carsten Höller that enriches the Atlas, the permanent collection of the Fondazione Prada, and attracts the curiosity of many visitors. But also the Bar Luce, designed by film director Wes Anderson: pastel tones, jukebox, pinball machines and a refined vintage atmosphere to feel like being in a film while sipping a cup of coffee.

THE COURTYARD OF CASA ROSSI
This building is a great example of eclectic architecture. It was built by Giuseppe Pestagalli in the 1860s and features a Neo-Renaissance façade on the outside. If you stand in the middle of the courtyard open to the public and you look up, you will see how its structure frames a portion of the blue sky in a perfect octagon.
Corso Magenta, 12
ARTLINE
Eggs that stretch out towards the sky, a gigantic hand, and stars on the square floor. These are just three of the art installations found at Artline, the park in the shadow of the skyscrapers of the City Life district, that is enriched every year with new installations. A new life for the old headquarters of the army in Piazza delle Armi, that was used for military exercises until 1923.
Piazza Elsa Morante
VICOLO DEI LAVANDAI
Located along the Navigli, Vicolo dei Lavandai offers a picturesque view of the old Milan. You can see the stream, the canopy still supported by small wooden beams and the old lavoir. The people who came here in the past to wash their clothes were not women, but men, members of a trade association active in Milan since the 18th century.

It is one of the first examples of a building with a new style architecture based on biodiversity, which pays attention to the relationship between man and other living species. The façade changes its appearance every season: full of flowers in spring, bright green in summer, and with the warm colours of the foliage in autumn.
