NOTE FROM THE PUBLISHER
Hello! Gulf Coast Woman magazine is 21! We’re all grown up and have so many exciting things ahead of us. Age-wise, we sound young, but we’re actually the oldest of the Coast magazines still publishing. And we have the broadest magazine distribution across South Mississippi. Thanks to Dr. Angela Bruni for being inspired to start Gulf Coast Woman all those years ago! We work hard to connect with South Mississippi women wherever they are. We’re proud of our social engagement, where our reach averages 71,000-plus monthly. We also average an additional 3,120 page views on www.gcwmultimedia.com. Our 15,000 copies printed per edition are read by an estimated 64,500 people. Our e-zine newsletters land in 6,000-plus inboxes twice monthly. As we create a space for readers, viewers and businesses to share, grow and celebrate, women are empowered and informed and businesses are able to reach the most influential buyer — women (females make or lead in making 85 percent of purchasing decisions). Continuous improvement is part of who we are at Gulf Coast Woman, so we’ll keep doing things like producing a home TV show. 8

• My Coast Home, introduced online initially, now airs on WLOX at 4 p.m. on Sundays. • In January, look for Little Blue Guide 2 Coastal MS, a concierge, so to speak, that shares the inside story on the best places to eat and play in South Mississippi. • The GCW Home Pro Network connects those in the market for homes, remodeling, home services and products with leading home professionals in the market. • The Ocean Springs and Biloxi Walking Maps, coming soon, were created to serve both locals and visitors, making it easy for them to find great places to visit in these two cities. • The Bridal Experience … where happily ever after begins … is returning in March, and brides-to-be, look ahead for a really fun way to plan your big day when the Bride Ride bus tours top wedding professionals again in July. Thank you so much to the GCW team for their hard work and to you, our readers, viewers and advertisers, for your continued support. We’ve come a long way, baby, and we’re still growing.

TURNING HER LIFE AROUND AFTER SURGERY HEATHER ROBINSON IS WINNING THE LIFELONG BATTLE WITH HER WEIGHT In a mere seven months, Heather Robinson’s life has totally transformed. Since her gastric sleeve surgery at Garden Park Hospital in February, Robinson has lost 140 pounds. “I am so much more confident and loving the new me,” says Robinson, who has been a USPS mail carrier for seven years. “I work out four to six days a week and recently started training a few friends at the gym.” She’s also become more involved in family and church activities and is making healthier food choices — swapping sweet tea and sodas for water and protein shakes. Surgical weight loss proved to be the solution to Robinson’s lifelong struggle. She recalls that her problem started at an early age with food allergies, then at 22, she was diagnosed with polycystic ovarian syndrome. “Whatever I tried to do just made me gain more weight,” she says. “Due to my weight, I had issues with my knees and ankles (that) caused me to miss out on sports and other activities my friends wanted me to be a part of.”
Today
After a friend had remarkable results with South Mississippi Surgical Weight Loss, Robinson’s mom suggested she give it a try. “I highly recommend Dr. (Jason) Payne and his team because they are very knowledgeable and help teach their patients to cope after sleeve surgery,” Robinson says. “They provided me with all the tools necessary for a successful outcome.” She acknowledges that her greatest challenge has been avoiding foods she used to love, but the sacrifice is worth it when she sees the number on the scale dropping consistently. Robinson also has gained a new love for the gym and is working toward her goal of becoming a personal trainer. “I never thought I would get to the place I am now,” she says. “With this surgery, I feel like I have a second chance at life!” To learn more about South Mississippi Surgical Weight Loss, as well as its award-winning surgeons and staff, call (228) 872-7277 or visit smsurgicalweightloss.com.

A special tribute to
KIPP GREGGORY THE VOICE OF BY JENNIFER GENTILE
Carnival season on the Coast won’t be the same without Robert “Kipp” Greggory Knippers. The beloved radio host emceed eight Mardi Gras balls a year. As the host and manager of SuperTalk WOSM 103.1 FM, he was a consistent presence on the parade route each Fat Tuesday, followed by a remote broadcast on the Biloxi Town Green. “He never said, ‘no’, or that he didn’t have time …,” recalls Jo Knippers, his wife of 31 years. “I would just love for people to know what a generous and kind person he was.” The type of emcee Kipp was, according to his daughter, Stormi, depended on what the event called for. For the Belle Fleurs, of which she is the co-captain and Jo is captain, “he ad-libbed and had fun with it.” Even for the more formal Mardi Gras activities, she recalls, “He still managed to make everyone laugh and enjoy their time there.” “A lot of people tell us ‘those are some big shoes to fill,” Stormi says. “We don’t know who’s going to stand in (for Kipp) this year.” Kipp emceed for the Krewe of Gemini for 13 years, says Captain Shellie Moses, and in that time, he became like family. Since Kipp’s death on Sept. 14, “There’s not a day that goes by that I don’t think of him.” 14

LEGACY OF
love, generosity
“He was just amazing,” Moses says. “He was so professional, but so true to himself.” Being himself meant always recognizing those in the service, she explains, or sometimes tap-dancing to entertain his audience during a delay. The beloved radio host’s death left a void not only for Kipp’s nearest and dearest, but for a community that treasured his authoritative voice, larger-than-life personality and giving spirit. During and outside of the festive season, Kipp was the kind of man who remembered important dates and put others first. A fixture at his daughters’ sports matches and concerts, he was the kind of dad who once prepared a full Thanksgiving meal and delivered it to Stormi at USM Hattiesburg when she had to stay on campus for the holiday. “There were many Thanksgivings he would cook for us and another family,” she recalls. “He wanted to leave this world better than how he found it, and I think he did just that.” Although listeners enjoyed his snarky comments and his funny socks posts on social media, Jo says, her husband was serious about his work with SuperTalk. “He spent hours a day researching and making sure he was up to date on all topics,” she says. Longtime friend and colleague Rick Mize, general manager of WQLJ-WTNM in Oxford, says Kipp had all the attributes of a great radio personality: quick wit, outstanding storytelling skills, positive energy and a willingness to go out of his way for worthy causes. Kipp connected to his audience, he adds, like a close friend who happened to have a radio show. “Whether he was coaching soccer, suspended in the air in an RV over Highway 90 for Bikes for Kids, emceeing Mardi Gras balls or a part of the Real Men Wear Pink drive (for breast cancer awareness), he used the platform to touch people,” Mize says. Kipp also chaperoned two veteran Honor Flights, emceed the Gulf Coast Down Syndrome Society’s Buddy Walk for several years and supported the Make a Wish Foundation, among his numerous charitable acts. But Mize says what stood out most about his friend was how much he loved his family — Jo and their children, Stormi and India. Since Kipp’s death, Jo says, “The girls and I are taking one day at a time, but we have decided to do what we can to help others — to still stay involved in Make a Wish and the American Cancer Society.” “This will hopefully honor his legacy by doing what he loved,” she adds. Sometimes, Jo acknowledges, the loss doesn’t seem real, and she finds herself expecting a text or call from 18

At left, Kipp with his daughters, Stormi and India, and wife, Jo.
Kipp saying he’s coming home. He and his loved ones were blindsided by a heart defect that went undetected for 50 years and required replacement of his aortic valve in July. After surgery, Kipp posted a photo to social media from his hospital bed, urging his followers and friends to get a heart ultrasound, known as an echocardiogram. “Even (while) feeling bad himself, he wanted to make sure others found out before it was too late,” Jo says. By the time his defect was found, she adds, it had taken a toll on his heart, and “he passed doing what he loved — cooking for other people.” When he wasn’t working or volunteering his time, Kipp loved watching the Saints, enjoying a cigar and eating bacon. Stormi remembers her dad as smart, kind-hearted and silly, and his sense of humor also left a lasting impression on Mize. “Back in the day, he always had a signature icebreaker opening line: ‘Horse walks into a bar. Bartender says, ‘Why the long face?’” Kipp’s friend recalls. “At his memorial service, I figure he would have asked us the same thing.”

THE BACK STORY In January of 2019, the Geoteses opened NextHome Simplicity in the city of Long Beach, MS, for one reason: To make the real-estate buying and selling experience better and simpler. They recently opened a completely remodeled, 2,300-square-foot office to further enhance clients’ experience with the company. The office boasts some of the coolest, cutting edge amenities in modern office space. It has a dedicated video room, soundproof “phone booth,” open concept, and paperless filing system.
GRAND
After years of working in real estate, closing hundreds of deals and winning multiple national sales awards, Andrew and Brittany Geotes realized there was a need for a different kind of real estate brokerage on the Gulf Coast — a brokerage that offered agents the training, tools, and proven real estate methods to provide their clients “top-tier” service; one that understood the importance of being extremely selective when choosing agents to represent their brand.
WHAT’S DIFFERENT ABOUT NEXTHOME NextHome Inc. is the fastest-growing real estate franchiser in America and has been jokingly called “a technology company with a real estate license.” The company’s impressive “tech toolbox” as well as its culture, which subscribes to a “people over numbers” philosophy, is exactly why thousands of people, including the Geoteses, have chosen NextHome to partner with. With the realestate industry becoming more and more techoriented, partnering with a national franchise offers huge branding and technological benefits to agents and their clients.
OVER 3500 NEXTHOME AGENTS IN 49 STATES

December 2019
The sound-resistant social media room was created for video production. “Facebook and other social media platforms will be 100% video-oriented in the next few years. We want to be prepared,” Brittany Geotes said.
The sound-resistant phone booth will allow agents without private office space to have a quiet place for phone calls away from the hustle and bustle of the office.
OPENING! BEFORE
AFTER
NextHome Inc. spared no expense when selecting companies to partner with in the development of their technology platform, or in hiring a company to help develop their branding. The unique, modern signage NextHome offers was developed by Pentagram, the same company who developed the branding for Apple, Tiffany’s and Gucci to name a few. You can’t miss “Luke” our mascot. The adorable, orange, French bulldog Luke is NextHome’s “apple”. Everyone loves him and the modern appeal the NextHome branding offers.
NextHome is the fastest-growing realestate franchise in America and is often called a tech company with a real estate license — it is modern, forwardthinking and unique.
TRUE REAL ESTATE PROFESSIONALS When working with a NextHome Simplicity agent, buyers and sellers can feel confident that they are working with a true real estate professional. NextHome Simplicity only hires full-time agents to work within the brokerage. If an agent does not have previous experience, he or she is placed within a mentor program alongside a top-producing real estate professional. They want to ensure that all their clients are working with a full time, experienced professional. Andrew, Brittany, and all the NextHome Simplicity agents look forward to the positive impact that our fresh, modern, real estate company will have, not only on the community of Long Beach, but on the greater Gulf Coast as well. The mission to drive a positive change in the local industry is at the forefront of Simplicity’s goals.

VALUES
Behind the scenes with a local award-winning advertising agency What’s it really like to work in the world of advertising? No, it’s not all about martini lunches, pitch wars and scandal. At least it hasn’t been for one Gulf Coast agency. In fact, the team at Christie Fountain Advertising (CFA) couldn’t be more different from the popular tv portrayals. Every member here supports each other and the ad life they have built in the Ocean Springs-based operation. “When you love what you do and do what you love, it shows,” said Principal and Creative Director Christie Fountain. “Our values, vision and mission drive us––and distinguish us––from the typical advertising agency.” Christie Fountain started her solo operation in 2006, but began inviting passionate people who shared the same vision to join her soon after. Debbie Feister, Creative Manager, has been with the team for seven years. “I love the projects we get to work on. One day we are designing donut boxes, the next we are launching a multi-media healthcare campaign,” said Debbie. “Each challenge is a new opportunity to help our partners make it happen.” The CFA team’s clients, referred to as marketing partners, include both small and large businesses to in-house marketing departments and even other advertising agencies if called upon. “We are positioned to help in any capacity needed,” explained Christie. “For some partners, we deliver strong creative strategy and execution, and for others it’s a multi-state broadcast media plan. No matter how we partner, we love collaborating with our coastal business community.”
• Integrity • Creativity
PageAnn Fletcher, Advertising Manager, is especially proud of the commitment the team has made to giving back. “We are so grateful for our partnerships, because they enable us to donate work and time to many public service projects too,” she said. From designing the Junior Auxiliary’s annual Gala for the Kids invitations and campaigns, to participating in the Habitat for Humanity’s Women’s Build project or assisting schools and other foundations with fundraising campaigns, the tight-knit team aims to produce big results on every project. The end results have been recognized with more than one hundred ADDY advertising awards of creative excellence over the years, including Best of Show, Creative Director of the Year, Art Director of the Year––and Christie Fountain has been named Copywriter of the Year five times by the Mississippi Gulf Coast Advertising Federation. “It really is about doing your best on every project,” said Christie. “When you find yourself somewhere and see a complete stranger make a real connection to something you put your heart and soul into, well––that’s a great day.” The celebration is short-lived, however; because the next opportunity is always waiting when the doors open at 7:00 a.m. the following workday. “But that’s why we love advertising,” added Debbie, “the deadlines––lots of coffee and chocolate––and loads of laughter. That’s really what a typical day at CFA looks like.”

W
ell, my life began in 1995; I can remember that day so well. The boys were becoming men. We still saw them often, and Deb’s eldest brother, Jack, had drawn up plans for my life. Her brother, Al, came for the birth, too. It was a hot Labor Day weekend, and love bugs were everywhere as boards were prepared and the work began. Board by board, my wooden legs were pounded into the marshy ground, then the walkway that would be the stage for memories came alive. That was the weekend I was born. What I have watched makes my heart full — or would if I had a heart. I’ve witnessed the most beautiful sunrise you could imagine. I’ve watched the grandkids, from number one to number seven, sit and ponder their next catch. I’ve watched them laugh and cry and rejoice in each victory catch. I’ve weathered many storms, even hurricanes, yet here I stand — maybe a little more distressed, but still strong. As I watch the years pass, I see Deb and Larry grow older, year by year, but still look at me with love. From my vantage point, I’ve watched them daily sitting on the porch, laughing and talking. I think that porch is their favorite room. I often would hear scriptures being read aloud and prayers being said from that old porch.
From time to time, the grandkids would come. Fishing often would occur, or maybe some minnow-catching with a net. Time passed, and the eldest son replaced my top boards. A platform area was built for a small boat; I think it just added to my beauty. My legs have remained sturdy and have carried the weight of many an adult. I watched Deb and Larry move a bit slower, especially when they came home with a paddle boat. What a sight seeing them get in and out of that! As time passed, I noticed a quiet fall over the porch and over me. The activity I once enjoyed became rare. I do have a faithful friend, Oliver, who stands guard over the small fish below, hoping for a meal. I’ve watched a little white dog come here as a small pup and sadly go away, but now a new, fatter little doggie is here. He visits me on occasion. But oh, the memories! Time goes so fast. Lives change. Every moment of my life, I have enjoyed — from watching the little ones play on me to seeing the guys catch some big ones. Sometimes, just being aware that I am a solid place for people to shed a tear, pray to a God that is real or share a story or two and a laugh is enough to make me, a simple pier, feel like I matter. Remember, I’m just a pier — but oh, what I’ve seen!
Im ’ just a pier – but oh, what I ’ve seen . . .

“Statement pieces are a must. If you would like to make the biggest impact, do a larger piece in a focal area of your event.” RACHEL BOND
“My eye for details has always been my forté. It’s the little things that can make an event over the top.” ANGIE MARIE DEARMAN
ANGIE MARIE DEARMAN Director of sales, Centennial Plaza Dearman has worked as a wedding and event planner on the Mississippi Gulf Coast for 17 years. She coordinated and decorated a wedding at the White House Hotel on Aug. 1, 2014, and exactly five years later, when the hotel ownership unveiled Centennial Plaza in Gulfport, she oversaw the grand opening.
Tips for planning the perfect event:
• (Ask,) “What will people remember? How can I make a lasting first impression?” • Have highlight times throughout the night. Not everyone likes the same thing, so switch up the event throughout the night with fun interactions. • Make sure the last part of the party is something fun to remember!
RACHEL BOND Owner, designer, Pine Hills Floral Designs Rachel Bond grew up working in her family’s garden center, Pine Hills Nursery, and decided to pursue her love of flowers by earning a degree in horticulture/floral management. Her passion is getting to know the couples she works with and turning their visions into reality.

ADRIAN HOLLAND Owner, Bridal and Formal Boutique & House of Tux Holland has been dressing men and women for over 22 years and strives to provide the same high level of service to everyone who walks through her door. Frequent client Roianne Gutierrez, who has turned to Holland to style her for 20-plus events, calls her the “go-to girl” for special event attire.
“I look forward to helping women find a gown that makes them feel confident for their special occasion. It's so rewarding to see their faces light up when the dress is PERFECT!” ADRIAN HOLLAND
Tips for finding the right look: • Try on things outside of your norm. You may be surprised at what fits your body type. • Accessories are key! The perfect jewelry will take your gown to the next level. • Never try on anything outside of your budget. You are sure to fall in love with it!
“Add a touch of glitter at the lash line or the inner corner of the eye and create a beautiful pop of interest.” MALLORY FITZGERALD
MALLORY FITZGERALD Freelance makeup artist After serving in the U.S. Army, Fitzgerald pursued her love of makeup as a career. She’s since created looks for TV and print advertising, bridal and much more and has become the makeup artist of choice for numerous photographers and businesses along the Coast. Recently she’s worked with clients such as HGTV and Food Network. Tips for getting glam for a holiday party: • Number one is always skincare. If you take good care of your skin, your makeup will do exactly what you intend for it to do. It also will boost staying power. • Use a setting spray like Urban Decay All-Nighter or Skindinavia makeup finishing spray to bump up your makeup’s lasting power.

DAVID DELK President, ABC Rental For 27 years, Delk brought joy to south Mississippi with the Christmas extravaganza, “Sounds of the Holidays.” A staple of the area’s celebration scene, he still delights party-goers by providing high-quality rental items for their special occasions.
“Glassware costs just a little more than high-end plastic — and it will make your event so elegant.” DAVID DELK
Tips for throwing the perfect party: • If you need rentals, reserve early! Items go quickly. • People still like white linens. Punch it up a bit and use color! It’s the same price. MICHAEL BRUNSON Owner, Flowers Forever and Gifts At 65 years old with 40 years’ floral experience, Michael Brunson says his turning point was working in Fort Lauderdale, Florida, with a wholesale and retail floral company, which “added to the twists and turns of looking (at) floral design differently.” Tips for making a party space magical: • I like unusual containers that anchor floral designs. • Make sure your design flows easily for your guests. • Have the area done with your favorite lighting and sounds and topped off with great florals, making sure it is clean and party ready. SUSIE DAVIS Owner, A Plan to Remember Susie Davis has been leading the wedding and event industry for 12 years. Her company A Plan to Remember works with the best, most reputable vendors on the Coast to create a memorable, perfect event — whether it’s a birthday party, shower, wedding or other special occasion. Tips for making your party pop: • Don’t be afraid to be different; we love out of the box! • Book the professionals you want to work with well ahead of time. • Create a fun signature drink that not only goes with your event, but is tasty as well.

She has 12 years of experience and specializes in color corrections, balayage and all coloring services, cutting, special occasion styling and makeup. Tips for party-perfect hair: • Pick hairstyles you are comfortable with. You don’t want to chance feeling self-conscious about a style you’re not used to. • If you get color services done, make sure you have your appointments set to coordinate with your events so your color is fresh and fab. • Hair always styles better with texture, so having a good texture spray or powder will help your hair have body and hold for your event. Finish off with a medium-hold hairspray. You don’t want to overdo it with a firm-hold hairspray because it will weigh (your hair) down.

“We love this time of year because families and friends gather to celebrate, and they want to look and feel special.” SHARON WEEKS Owner/Manager, Grant's for Her Sharon Weeks always has had a passion for fashion but didn’t work in the industry until about 10 years ago. After working part time for several boutiques, she bought Grants for Her and began selling clothes and accessories that quickly gave her a reputation for offering high-end, elegant ladies’ apparel.
Models: Ann Marie Walley, Kerri Paul, Tessy Lambert, Lilian Perez-Gollott and Sue Nguyen-Torjusen
Tips for looking party perfect: • To stand out at a holiday event or a party, wear something that makes a statement, something that will make you stand out. You could pair a glitter bootie with denim, layer a statement necklace on a monochromatic look, or even wear a classic leather jacket with a little peplum flare. • Don’t overdo it! Less is more. If you want to mix elegant with a trend, make sure to try just one at a time. • Add a pop of color. Everyone loves a little black dress or jumpsuit, but don’t stop there. Metallics are perfect for the festive season; try them with your accessories. And we love a great clutch or handbag to take your simple outfit to the next level.

“Any excuse to wear a ball gown, I’m there."
These businesswomen love celebrations BY JENNIFER GENTILE
Lilian Perez-Gollott and Sue NguyenTorjusen love food and fun — both serving it up and being a part of it all. Perez-Gollott looks forward to Mardi Gras season, especially attending the parades and seeing the kids’ faces when they catch the “good” throws. “Any excuse to wear a ball gown, I’m there,” she says. “The hair, makeup, gowns, shoes — it’s my favorite. Everyone has a good time, and, of course, there is good food everywhere.” A carnival season devotee, NguyenTorjusen once was involved in three krewes at once and is the 2019 Queen of Bon Vivantes. “What I find special is the culture and heritage of the Gulf Coast,” she says. “No other region can compare. ...” A LIFE FULL OF CELEBRATIONS
“Some days, life is tough; we want you to find comfort in your favorite meal,” says Perez-Gollott, co-owner of Pepe’s Bosque Mexican Restaurant and Gollott’s Fresh Catch, who also is part owner of Brantley Ellison Fitness. “Life is also full of celebrations, (and) on those days, we want to come celebrate with us!” Hailing from Mexico, Perez-Gollott’s family has been in the restaurant business for generations. Similarly, self-taught NguyenTorjusen is the daughter of Vietnamese immigrants who once owned a local Asian market. Although ravaged by Hurricane Katrina, her Biloxi business, Le Bakery, survived and was one of the first establishments to reopen. People from all walks of life lined up en masse for sustenance and a taste of normalcy. “We operated with what we had and did what we could to help feed the Gulf Coast,” Nguyen-Torjusen says. “We had volunteers living in makeshift tents/housing. We did the best we could to provide fresh-baked breads, pastries and our signature banh mi (French Vietnamese po’ boys).” Amid the chaos, she took a can of black spray paint and scrawled a message on

plywood: “Bread will rise again. It kneeds time.” A photo that a customer took of the sign still hangs in the store. LET THE GOOD TIMES ROLL
Several area restaurants serve Le Bakery’s popular breads, and the eatery’s custom cakes are staples at special occasions. When Mardi Gras rolls around, NguyenTorjusen says, “we have an amazing following for our king cakes.” “Being a bakery, we are pretty much ‘at’ every celebration,” Nguyen-Torjusen says, “from birthdays, showers (and) weddings (to) every holiday — even celebrations of life.” Food brings people together, adds PerezGollott, and she wants every customer to feel like family — which means sharing life’s best moments. “We love a good celebration!” she says. “For starters, there’s always tequila. We love to decorate for holidays.” Pepe’s Cinco De Mayo observance gets bigger and more fun every year, she adds, while Gollott’s hosts the Croaker Classic and Cruisin’ the Coast events. WORDS OF ADVICE
Although her breads, pastries and sandwiches are a delicious, complex blend of both ingredients and cultures, NguyenTorjusen’s recipe for the perfect party is as simple as it gets. “Great food, great family, great friends — as long as that’s the basis of your celebration, you can’t go wrong,” she says. To anyone planning a holiday gathering, Perez-Gollott offers the following advice: Have a theme. Know your guests and their preferences/requirements. Have a schedule for everything that needs done before people arrive — then start an hour earlier because “something always comes up.” And finally, “Enjoy. Don’t sweat the little things.” “Sometimes the tamales will burn; don’t hide in a closet to cry,” she says. “Instead, pop the bottle of champagne and cheers your sister as you vow that next year is the year you will get everything right!” www.gcwmultimedia.com

Tammy Lee of Ocean Springs doesn’t go all out decorating for Christmas to please herself. In fact, she’d be happy just trimming her small metal tree. “Mostly, I decorate and make our home festive for family and friends,” says the wife, mom and office administrator. “I want to give them the joy and excitement of Christmas and create magical memories.” Lee shares her home at 14109 El Camino Real with her husband, Scott, a mechanical engineer; and daughter, Sydney Harris, owner of Magnolia Rae Boutique. When getting her home holiday ready, she tries not to stress about the details or meeting a deadline. “Instead, I roll with the punches and enjoy the season with family, friends and a nice bottle of wine,” says Lee, who also is mom to Brandon Lee, a Nashville-based engineer, and Brittany Lee McElhaney, a nurse practitioner living in Ocean Springs. Lee starts stowing fall decorations the weekend after Thanksgiving, and then she evaluates which furniture must be moved, where decorations will go and what she’d like to change from years past. “Last but certainly not least, I think about family gatherings and parties that we will host,” Lee says. “I want to make sure our home isn’t so overwhelming with décor that there isn’t room to mingle.” To help execute her vision, Lee trusts Ray Ebberman, owner of Ray’s Interior Design Co./ Ray’s on the Avenue. While her holiday look incorporates a traditional red-and-green color scheme, she likes to add some whimsy and play with shades like lime green. “Tammy and I have been brainstorming the Christmas décor for several months,” says Ebberman, who collaborated with the couple on their home for two years — from concept to construction. “The Lees and I enjoyed the creative sides of working together to create their dream home.” An avid cook, Lee says she is especially fond of the kitchen. “For me, a beautiful centerpiece on our kitchen island makes me happy,” she says. “This is the hub of our home and where family and friends gather around making those cherished memories. I also love to see our dining table decorated with an elegant centerpiece and a beautiful place setting.” When guests arrive, they are greeted with a wreath on the front door — an element Lee says offers a warm welcome to those stopping or driving by. Each year, the Lees host several Christmas parties and impromptu get-togethers for family and friends. “Planned or not, there is always plenty of food, drinks and laughs to be shared,” she says. 44

So he never knows what to gift you? (FORGET SUBTLETY! THIS PAGE IS FOR HIM) BY JENNIFER GENTILE
Husbands and boyfriends, we hear you. The pressure of finding the right gift for the woman in your life is enough to drive any man to the brink. The options are overwhelming — and the temptation too great to fall into a trap of an ugly sweater or tacky nick nack bought at the last minute (seriously … don’t). If you’re desperate to avoid that familiar, disappointed look on your significant other’s face come Christmas, we have the ultimate gift guide guaranteed to keep you out of the doghouse … at least until Valentine’s Day. JEWELRY
A shiny, sparkly bauble is a surefire way to make most women smile. A word of caution: don’t run off to the nearest jewelry store without a plan. Pay attention to what she already wears; what type of metal or gems does she favor? Does she prefer studs or larger earrings? Does she make a bold statement with her pieces or opt for something more delicate? When you’re ready to buy, use your best judgment. Expensive does not always equal better, so focus on design and craftsmanship over cost. You don’t have to blow your budget to get something elegant and tasteful. P.S.: You may deem one watch sufficient, but your significant other probably sees it differently. A chic timepiece, like this Fossil rose gold watch with a leather band and buckle enclosure, can make a lovely addition to her collection. TECH
Yep, plenty of women love to find the latest gadgets under the tree. Consider a sleek, stylish smart watch, a portable Bluetooth speaker or even a fun mini instant camera. While she’s working out or relaxing after a busy day, your lady probably is eager to tune out the rest of the world; that makes noise-cancelling headphones, like this Libratone pair, a thoughtful choice.

SCENTS
Take a whiff as you walk through your door. If you live with a woman, you likely are greeted with an inviting aroma like French vanilla or lavender. Is your wife or girlfriend crazy about candles or deathly serious about air fresheners? She’s not alone — and she probably would enjoy a gift that will keep her sanctuary smelling sweet. This Everlasting Comfort diffuser for essential oils (400ml) releases a relaxing scent for over 13 hours. P.S.: Gifting perfume is a bold move — and one that can go horribly awry. Women tend to be particular about the scents they wear, so learn what she likes and stick with the tried and true. PAMPERING
The gift of relaxation and stress relief is a godsend, as women tend to focus on others’ needs and neglect selfcare. A voucher for a facial, massage, pedicure or other service at her favorite spa is sure to be appreciated. Another option: Turn her own home into a spa retreat with a pampering present like this Knack “A Restful Pause” kit, which includes all-natural, cruelty-free cleansing products.

Single at New Year’s?
Resolve to have fun!
BY SHEENA MYLES
Picture this: a blanket neatly laid out on cool sand, facing the soothing waves of the dark Gulf of Mexico. Now envision the person you are certain is the love of your life holding you close. You silently sigh and mentally smile ear to ear as barely audible voices around you count down in unison to the brand new year — five, four, three, two, one … silence. There are no fireworks, no chemistry and no kiss on the cheek, hand or lips — at least not from your “forever” person. It’s just pajamas, popcorn, pigtails and puppies. Happy New Year, single lady; you have done it again. You have singled and survived. You made it through the entire holiday season single. Open that bathrobe and bust a move 58
December 2019
to Beyoncé’s “Single Ladies.” Go ahead — you know every lyric, ad lib and dance move. When you finish 3 minutes and 18 seconds later, let’s plan for next year. The pressure of being single on New Year’s Eve is as heavy as it is for Valentine’s Day. However, just like the previous years, your mantra and plans do not change. You are one step closer to not being single on annual holidays. Decking the halls with holly will make you jolly. Staying home for a spa-cation, party of one, complete with champagne, will be a thing of the past. There is no pressure at all for the coming year. This year’s resolution will be fulfilled! At least, that is the goal: to be kissed at midnight, to declare love and to be half of a duo.

Secondclub Liners turns Group parades into 2020 with plans for more fun, philanthropy
BY JENNIFER GENTILE
Like many great things, the Biloxi Second Liners Mardi Gras Club started with a modest idea. “One of our members was watching a kids' parade on television and thought it would be a great idea for the (East Biloxi) neighborhood,” says club president Anthony C. Mitchell. At the beginning, children circled the block with their wagons — cheered and supported by people in the neighborhood. Twenty-five years later, the Second Liners parade has grown to 80-plus units — and the club is known for sponsoring wholesome activities and supporting charitable causes. To mark its quarter-century milestone, this year’s theme is “A 25-year Legacy of Black and Gold,” and the group will celebrate at a Mardi Gras Ball, an annual parade, a community funfest, a champagne brunch, brunch after party and Lundi Gras bus trip. “At these events, (people) will get to witness the members and partygoers take out their umbrella (and) handkerchief and … strut their stuff doing the ‘second line,’” Mitchell says — referring to the lively New Orleans parade style that inspired the group’s name. Although the club is based in East Biloxi, the president says it unites people across the Coast — as well as Alabama, Florida, Louisiana, Maryland, Tennessee, Texas and Virginia. Many of its 63 members are retirees and military veterans while others work locally in various professions. 62

Led by a strong sense of social responsibility, Mitchell says the Second Liners are dedicated to making a difference — and feeling good doing it. “Our mission is to serve youth and families, as well as support other organizations for the benefit of the Mississippi Gulf Coast community,” Mitchell explains. He adds that the club is a “double nickel” nonprofit — inside slang for a civic organization that also has a Carnival/Mardi Gras component and is registered with both the state and the IRS. “We are one of just eight organizations of this type on the entire Gulf Coast,” Mitchell says. Even after the floats and ball gowns are stowed away, the Second Liners fulfill their purpose through activities like a kids’ Easter eggstravaganza, a Boys and Girls Club family Thanksgiving dinner and a visitation/donation opportunity at the Greenbriar Nursing Center. In the future, Mitchell said they’d like to do more in regard to granting scholarships, adopting best practices, developing a social media strategy and establishing an associate membership program. “We offer a faithful presence among the less fortunate and suffering in our community by providing compassionate service, programs and activities throughout the year,” he adds. “We create inspiration and as a mandate of our faith show love for our community with the many acts of compassion and services we provide.”

How to avoid holiday BY DR. PAMELA TULI
WEIGHT GAIN
The holidays are upon us, and ‘tis the season to enjoy family and friends — which often involves food and drink. Research shows that as much as 75 percent of someone’s annual weight gain occurs between Thanksgiving and New Year’s. The average person gains one to two pounds during this time, and the majority of people do not lose this weight. While that amount may seem insignificant, one to two pounds adds up to 10 to 20 pounds over the course of 10 years. Experts refer to this gradual gaining of small amounts of weight as creeping obesity. Being overweight leads to many health problems, including heart disease, diabetes and cancer. Gaining weight during the holidays does not have to happen! Here are a few tips to help you avoid the creep of added pounds: LIMIT INDULGING
Enjoy and indulge on special days during the season while maintaining your healthy eating habits otherwise. PRIORITIZE EXERCISE
Make time for exercise. Exercising in the morning, before you get sidetracked, can help you keep this commitment. If you exercise three times per week, add an extra workout for days you indulge. EAT BEFORE YOU GO
Don’t go to a party hungry. Have a small meal beforehand that includes protein. Protein helps us
feel full and balance blood sugar, which will decrease cravings. STAY HYDRATED
Drinking water helps us feel full, and as a result, consume fewer calories. EAT SLOWLY
The quicker that we consume, the less time our bodies have to register fullness. It takes our brain about 20 minutes to realize we are full. Wait a bit before getting the second serving — or better yet, skip it. LIMIT ALCOHOL
Choose your beverages carefully, as caloric intake can increase quickly with sugary, alcoholic drinks. Too much alcohol also can increase our appetite, leading to overeating. WEAR FORM-FITTING CLOTHES
It can be hard to notice small amounts of weight gain, especially if you are wearing sweatpants or loose clothing. If your form-fitting pants become a bit tight, you’ll know you need to add an extra workout or decrease your caloric intake. The holiday season is six weeks long. Maintain healthy habits during this period each year, and you could maintain your weight for life! Dr. Pamela Tuli is a hematologist/oncologist who has been practicing on the Mississippi Gulf Coast since 2007, and she currently is with Memorial Hospital in Gulfport. Her medical school and residency training was at Temple University in Philadelphia, and she completed her hematology and oncology fellowship while serving in the United States Air Force. She can be contacted at (228)-575-1234.

Finding your
WHY
What’s inside your head and your heart truly determine the outcome of your life. I know that to change the body, you first must change the mind; there must be a paradigm BY KAROL BRANDT shift. You must dig deep and find your “why.” This means peeling back the onion, shedding some layers, and yes, maybe some tears, to reach the heart and understand your reason for change. Everyone makes choices, and the choices we’ve made have led us to this point. Our choices can bring unhealthy consequences, like being overworked, stressed, lacking sleep and exercise, eating poorly and suffering from low self-esteem, which brings on negative self-talk and a negative self-image. Sound familiar? The decision-making process, especially committing to change and finding the reason you want to change, is very hard. But with focus, willpower and positive affirmations and actions, it is doable. Today, you can choose to find your “why” — to become the healthiest, happiest version of yourself. “How do I find my ‘why?’” you ask. Your “why” is the reason, the true reason, you want to change. Stare it down, face to face, and then write down your “why” and read and work on it every day. A health and fitness transformation involves every aspect of your life, so the decision-making process must become more intentional than subconscious. Your “why” will guide your decision making, and you’ll be focusing on getting to it every day. That means you will have to actively engage yourself in every decision you make. This is often difficult because of the pace at which most of us live our lives. We are always in non-stop mode, with work, family and other obligations leading us to a lot of bad decisions in terms of food choices and exercise. They fall to the bottom of the

"I know that to change the body, you must first change the mind; There must be a paradigm shift" priority list sometimes. But when you find your why — the reason you want to change and evolve into the healthiest, happiest, version of yourself — you will begin to be mindful and think through your daily decisions. Gulfport rehab hospital puts patients on path to recovery BY JENNIFER GENTILE
For those who have suffered a serious illness or injury, the hardest part often is getting back to normal. As the only inpatient rehabilitation facility in Harrison and Hancock counties, Encompass Health Rehabilitation Hospital, a partner of Memorial Hospital of Gulfport, accepts patients from throughout the Coast and as far north as Hattiesburg. The hospital’s programs help them recover after debilitating events like stroke, amputation and hip fracture. “Our goal is for our patients to be able to return home as close to their prior level of independence as possible,” says CEO Amber Hester. According to Hester, Encompass Health became a partner of Memorial Hospital after acquiring Memorial’s 33-bed inpatient rehabilitation unit. Encompass Health Rehabilitation Hospital opened in 2017 and is located inside Memorial on the second floor of the east tower. “Encompass Health is the largest post-acute care provider for inpatient rehabilitation hospitals in the country,” Hester says. “There are over 130 Inpatient rehab hospitals across the country like ours.”
Patients usually remain in the hospital 10-14 days, she adds, and undergo intensive therapy during their stay. When patients arrive, staff assesses how much help they need to perform basic functions. A rehabilitation team then works with patients to set attainable goals and design a treatment plan. Encompass Health’s care regimen, according to Hester, includes frequent visits by a rehabilitation doctor; an interdisciplinary, collaborative team approach; specialty nursing training; leading-edge rehabilitation expertise; a weekly team conference; exceptionally trained therapists providing intensive

therapy three hours per day, five days per week; and state-of-the-art therapy gyms and rehabilitation technology. “It is amazing to watch patients overcome the challenges many of these illnesses and injuries bring,” Hester says. “Seeing the progress that can be made when a patient isn’t walking when being admitted to our hospital, and seeing them discharge home with the ability to independently care for themselves in a short timeframe, is a testament to what our level of care can do.” By complying with national standards for quality and safety, the hospital has earned accreditation from The Joint Commission on Accreditation of Rehabilitation Facilities. In 2018, Hester adds, the facility discharged over 80 percent of its patients back to the community and is on track to the same in 2019. She explains that in the future, the facility aims to reach and help more patients in the community and to grow its scope of services. “We always strive for the very best in high quality patient care on the Gulf Coast and to continue to raise the bar higher,” Hester says.

‘Tis the season for
FOOD POISONING During the holiday season, everyone celebrates with parties and family gatherings — and what’s a party without food? Becky’s potato salad, Marjorie’s deviled eggs and Suzanne’s chicken casserole disappear in a flurry of heaping servings. All goes well until a few hours later, when a dozen party goers find themselves hugging their toilets and ejecting the sustenance from both ends. The Centers for Disease Control and Prevention estimates that Americans suffer over 3 million cases of food poisoning per year. Foods contaminated by bacteria or their toxins create an upset stomach, which can progress to nausea, vomiting and diarrhea. Fortunately, most cases last only a few hours, leaving the victim with a mildly sore belly and a sense of being washed out. However, some types of food poisoning can be serious, leading to symptoms like brain damage, kidney failure or even death. Emergency rooms now have a laboratory test that, with a sample, can identify within two hours which of the 30 most common bugs might be causing the diarrhea. The most serious organisms causing food poisoning are salmonella, Norwalk virus, campylobacter, E. coli, listeria, and clostridium perfringens. All but one of these is a bacteria and may require antibiotic treatment. Symptoms suggesting that a person should seek medical help include blood in the stool, high fever or feeling dehydrated. Most food poisoning symptoms occur soon after eating contaminated food. Staphylococcus, found in raw foods like sliced meats, puddings and sandwiches, may cause symptoms as soon as a half an hour after eating. In contrast, Norovirus, found mainly in shellfish, fruits and green leafy vegetables, takes at least 12 hours to appear and may not cause symptoms for up to 48 hours after consumption. E. coli infections come from undercooked beef, particularly hamburger, and also from unpasteurized milk, raw vegetables and contaminated water. These infections take three to four days to manifest symptoms, which often includes bloody diarrhea. About 5 percent of people with E. coli food poisoning develop life-threatening complications. Listeria, found in soft cheeses, unpasteurized milk and deli meats, takes one to four weeks to cause 82

WHEN TO SEE A DOCTOR • Bloody stools • Fever over 101 • Inability to keep fluids down • Signs of dehydration, such as no urine output, dry mouth and rapid pulse • Diarrhea lasting more than three days symptoms. Infected people may have fever and flu-like symptoms and may suffer miscarriage or seizures. Most food poisoning symptoms are mild and will resolve without seeking medical help. For mild vomiting with diarrhea, doctors recommend taking in plenty of fluids, primarily water while supplementing with electrolyte solutions such as sports drinks. Most food poisoning is not contagious, although good hand washing after cleaning up is important. To ensure a fun and safe holiday season, take care when preparing food. Wash your hands and your food well, and clean your knives and cutting boards thoroughly — especially when working with raw meats and vegetables. Dr. Philip L. Levin is based in Gulfport and has been practicing for 40 years. He graduated from the University of Texas Medical School at San Antonio in 1978 and specializes in emergency medicine. Terra Griffin: MY TRANSFORMATION STORY WHY I DID THIS Before my transformation, I saw a picture of myself when I was at a football game with my friends from college on Sept. 9, 2017. I was absolutely mortified, as I did not realize how big I was. I knew I’d gained weight, but I was unaware of the magnitude of my weight gain. I immediately reached out to my friend Alisha Rushing, who had been encouraging me to come to the gym. Like so many other times, I had an excuse and blamed everything and everybody except myself. But after seeing the picture, I knew I had to do something immediately. Initially, my goal was to go to the gym and lose 30 to 40 pounds, as I was contemplating weight loss surgery. If anyone knows me, they know I am the queen of the quick fix. At my initial meeting with my gym trainers, I received my first reality check from one of them, who told me that this was not the place for me if I wanted a quick fix. He further explained this would be a process, and I needed to realize I did not gain weight overnight and would not lose it overnight. While this was the last thing I wanted to hear, I joined anyway. Today, I know not having the surgery was one of the best decisions of my life. MY GOAL My goal quickly changed from losing 30 to 40 pounds to 61 pounds, as that would take me from 261 pounds to 200. I felt that if I reached my goal, I would be at the perfect weight and could maintain it. However, I hadn't bought into or focused on the lifestyle change. My goal was merely to change how I looked physically and my weight on the scale. After a year working out, I still was stuck in the mindset of just losing weight. My focus was purely on the scale and how many pounds I had lost. After having worked out for over a year, I was at a birthday party for one of my gym sisters, and two of my other gym sisters, who recently had made tremendous transformations, walked in and sat at the table. I became disappointed in myself, as I knew I had received the same tools and opportunities to be successful but did not put in the work. Again, I was disappointed that I had not attained my goals. On Monday when I entered camp, I spoke with one of my trainers and asked her why wasn't I seeing results like the others. I was hit with my second reality check when she clearly stated I was not putting in the work and I had not committed to change. After camp, my focus changed from weight to health and wellness. WHAT I DID My commitment changed, and I increased my focus during the workouts and incorporated walking after every session, 86
December 2019
as well as off days. My supportive, unwavering and committed BEFORE friends Cynthia Champion and Marty & AFTER Washington Moffett started walking with me and have not left my side. Initially, my goal was to walk 20 miles per week, and as of last week, I completed my all-time best of 42 miles. My gym sisters won’t accept anything but my best. Refocusing my mind and goals helped me accelerate my transformation, and I went from 261 pounds to 168 pounds. I no longer focused on the weight, but on health and wellness. I also changed my food intake and totally stopped drinking alcohol. Now I realize being healthy and looking healthy are two different things. THE MOST DIFFICULT PART The most difficult part of my wellness journey was changing my eating habits. I knew I needed to make healthy choices, but it was difficult, as I was accustomed to eating on the go. I thought if I purchased a salad, that was a good choice. However, I had to refocus my thoughts and actions. One of my gym sisters told me meal prep was the key to success. I explained that I didn’t have the time to meal prep, and my trainers and gym friends quickly reminded me that you make time for what’s important to you. To date, I struggle with always making healthy choices, but I quickly remind myself of where I came from and what going back to my old eating habits would mean. I now am conscious of my decisions and disciplined in my actions. I know it sounds cliché’, but now I eat to live — not live to eat. HOW I FEEL ABOUT MYSELF TODAY Today, I feel amazed, blessed and honored — not because I lost weight, but because I got a second chance at life. It gives me great pleasure to say I am totally changed mentally, emotionally and physically. What started as a health and wellness journey is now my lifestyle, and I will not quit. MY ADVICE TO OTHERS My advice to others is to simply start moving. You don't have to be the fastest or the strongest, but you must be consistent.

Don’t strain your spine as you deck the halls
The holiday season is approaching quickly, and with it lots of excitement. It’s an opportunity to buy fun presents personal and professional BY DR. JOSEPH T. COX experience that we lift, push, pull and climb things over the holidays that are not typical during the rest of the year. People also tend to eat and imbibe more, which can lead to weight gain and greater pressure on the spine. Hopefully, these tips will keep you and your back healthy throughout the holidays:
1. Lifting decorations and groceries
When lifting a heavy object like a box of decorations or a full sack of groceries, there are several ways to decrease the risk of developing low back pain. Always pick up objects using a good squat form, bending at the hips and knees and keeping your back straight. Your back should stay relatively vertical when using proper form. Once the object is firmly in your grasp, hold it close to your body to keep the object’s center of gravity near your center of gravity.
2. Decorating safely
It’s hard to outdo Clark Griswold without getting on a ladder and maybe even the roof. Unfortunately, extravagant rooftop decorating is very dangerous. Falls from rooftops and ladders can cause devastating injuries. I would advise strongly against long ladders and walking on the roof. When using a short ladder, minimize trips up and down. Always make sure the ladder feet are set firmly in place and that a spotter is present to stabilize the ladder and retrieve anything you forgot to grab before climbing to the top.
3. Eating healthy
With all the extra food platters and candy, it’s hard to avoid unneeded calories. For every pound gained, your lower back feels an additional 4 pounds of pressure. The opposite is also true, so for every pound lost, your spine 88
December 2019
feels that you’ve lost 4 pounds. Drinking 16 ounces of water 10 minutes before meals, using a small plate and waiting five to 10 minutes before going back for seconds are a few simple ways to avoid overeating.
4. Exercise and stretching
With the extra demands during the holidays, make sure to take time for yourself. Devoting 20 minutes per day to some form of exercise will release endorphins to help you tackle your next holiday challenge. It also will burn some of those holiday calories should you accidentally eat too much. For your back, I recommend core-strengthening exercises like crunches, horizontal and side planks and back extensions. These exercises are simple but can help with both neck and low back pain and are found easily online. Dr. Joseph T. Cox is a surgeon and physician with Bienville Orthopaedic Specialists. He sees patients at the practice’s Gulfport and Biloxi offices. Reach him at (228) 230-BONE (2663).

As the owner of Antionian Salon, Ann Marie Walley is continuing a family legacy. Walley, who has been a professional hairdresser and makeup artist for 10 years, is following in the footsteps of her late mother, Anna Maria G. Sukmann, who founded the salon in 1996. “Growing up in the

industry, making women feel and look beautiful is second nature and truly what I’m meant to do,” Walley says. “Before I became a licensed stylist, I used to assist my mother doing makeup for Mardi Gras groups and other events.” Walley credits her mother with making Antonian what it is today — a successful salon that caters to women and men of all ages. Before she passed in 2017, Sukmann saw the business grow into a new location on Three Rivers Road. The salon remains a family affair, with a team that includes Walley’s husband, Kiowa, a master colorist with

The team’s collective talent in hair, skin and nails, Walley says, makes Antonian the triple threat of the beauty industry. “We can do your hair and makeup, and (we) offer easyto-book, on-location services,” she adds. “Our modern, clean space creates a unique and friendly experience, while (also) offering the Gulf Coast’s first premier Goldwell color bar.” Although Antonian’s staff is highly skilled and trained, Walley says, the team takes pride in honing their craft through advanced techniques and continuing education. After serving the Coast for over 20 years, she adds, the Antonian family loves showing people how beautiful they really are. “We have so may rewards in our industry, from seeing the smile on a bride’s face after doing her hair and makeup to a child’s first haircut …,” Walley says. “If I had to pick a favorite, it would be being able to make a difference in our clients’ lives every day.”

REJUVENATION STATION BENEFITS BODY, MIND AND SOUL BY JENNIFER GENTILE
Everyone can relate to the feeling of being worn out, stressed or just needing a break from the outside world. Locals looking to practice some self-care can find respite at Rejuvenation Station, which specializes in all aspects of health and wellness. Upon entering the downtown Biloxi business, says owner Stacy Ely, customers are immersed in a calming environment. Soothing scents permeate the spa, and the relaxing atmosphere invites patrons to leave their cares at the door. “We have had people walk in and say they have never felt such amazing, loving energy in a place,” Ely says. “I wish we could take credit for that, but in all honesty, it is God’s love that people feel when they come in; this is his business, and we are just honored and blessed to be part of it.” Ely is a licensed respiratory care practitioner with a degree in psychology. She has a 26-year background in the medical field and sales. “I have a passion for helping people and have always thought outside the box,” she says. “I have always been health conscious and studied alternative ways of living a healthy life, so having a wellness spa was perfect.” Stacy and her partner, Mark Garriga, established Rejuvenation Station in 2014, originally opening in the Stacy Ely and her partner, Mark Garriga Vieux Marche (Howard Avenue). After outgrowing that location, they moved to Jackson Street in 2015. Festive face BY CHRISSY COX
GET IN THE SPIRIT WITH A GLAM MAKEUP LOOK
It’s officially the holiday season, and that means it’s time to spice up more than just your lattes. Here’s a few fun ways to amp up your everyday makeup look and feel more festive:
Glitter and Glow Liquid Eyeshadow ($24, ulta.com). Tap it out with your ring finger for an easy, effortless way to take your look from day to night (or office to party). Trust me, you WILL get compliments.
STAY SUN-KISSED WITH BRONZER
Crissy Cox is a freelance makeup artist on the Mississippi Gulf Coast, specializing in on-location wedding and special event makeup. Contact her or learn more at facebook.com/CrissyCoxMUA.
If you want to keep your summer glow just a little longer, try dusting the perimeters of your face with a bit of bronzer. Using a big, fluffy brush, sweep your bronzer around your hairline; put a little on the contours of your cheeks and down your nose, and add a pop on your chin. My favorite is Hourglass Ambient Lighting Bronzer ($52, sephora.com) for a sheer wash of golden goodness. FLIRT IT UP WITH FALSE LASHES
False lashes are the cherry on top of a beautiful (and glam) makeup look. Start by measuring the false lash to your eye before applying glue. If it’s poking your tear duct, or hanging off the outer edge, it should be trimmed. Only apply a small amount of glue, allowing it to get tacky before placing it on your lid. Remember, practice makes perfect. Ardell Demi Wispies ($5.49, walgreens. com) are always a fan favorite, and Duo Quick-Set Striplash Adhesive ($6.99, walgreens.com) pairs perfectly. GET YOUR SHINE ON
Please don’t run for the hills when I say the word “glitter.” If there’s ever a time to incorporate some sparkle into your life, it’s during the holiday season. Apply your makeup as usual; then, on the very center of your lid, on top of your eye shadow, pop on a little pressed glitter — or try my personal favorite, Stila

UNBOX YOUR GIFT-GIVING FOR A TIDY, JOYFUL HOLIDAY BY HEATHER YOUNG
When helping people declutter their homes, I often hear, "I don't really like this, but it was a gift from (fill in the blank), and it would hurt their feelings if I let it go." The last thing we want to do is create disappointment and stress for those receiving our gifts this holiday season. It helps to remember that not all gifts must be material. In his book “The Five Love Languages,” Gary Chapman lists five distinct ways of understanding and expressing love and affection: • Acts of service • Words of affirmation • Quality time • Physical touch • Receiving gifts
“Don't forget to deliver it with a warm, sincere hug.”
If you don't know which of these ranks highest for your friends and loved ones, it's a great conversation to have. Here are a few gift-giving ideas to get you inspired: • A busy mom who most appreciates acts of service would be delighted with the gift of an afternoon of babysitting or delivery of a homemade meal.
• A certificate for a spa treatment might be perfect for a relative who most values physical touch, and don't forget to deliver it with a warm, sincere hug. • And for friends and family who love receiving gifts above all else, ask for specifics, and do your very best to honor those requests. Much disappointment has come from well-intentioned substitutions!
• A son who prizes words of affirmation might be very touched to receive a gift card with a handwritten note, spelling out how proud of him you are.
As they say, "It's the thought that counts," but let's include in that thought an understanding of what is truly meaningful and brings joy to those on our gift lists this holiday. Cheers to keeping your gift-giving clutter free!
• Gifts of quality time could include a coffee date with your girlfriend or a mother-daughter road trip in the spring.

CHRISTMAS DECOR:
My must-haves
Snow to sand? Yes, that would be our little BY ADRIENNE ELLIOTT tribe of five’s weather story. My husband, Brandon, and I spent our childhood winters in snow-filled streets, sipping hot chocolate and bundled up from head to toe. I’m not going to lie — when it snows on Christmas Eve or Christmas Day, there is nothing more magical. Fast forward to 2019, and here we are in south Mississippi. As our climate has changed, our family holiday traditions have just begun. Our Christmas decor is always evolving, but like many of you, I have signature pieces I always incorporate. THE TREE
I will always and forever love flocked Christmas trees. I think this comes from my Canadian heart because it feels like there are little bits of snow surrounding us. It’s the best kind of snow, though, because we still have the amazing Gulf Coast weather. I can’t say “snow without the mess” because if you’ve ever set up a flocked tree, you know it’s not the cleanest. How I switch it up: Tree skirt, changing the pop of color, changing the tree topper. THE MANTEL
I absolutely love to decorate my mantel every year. It brings back the childhood glee of expecting Santa to come down the chimney, even if our fireplace is electric. Truth be told, wood-burning fireplaces are my favorite. Our mantel decor every year includes garland, oversized ornaments and, of course, stockings and stocking hooks.I also love a large signature piece or two on the mantel. In years past, I have displayed my two favorite reindeer on the mantel, and believe it or not, I found them at Sam’s Club. However, this year, they may move to a new location for a fun change. How I switch it up: Add a new pop of color and shift my statement pieces.
104
December 2019
THE FRONT DOOR
I have so many amazing childhood memories of Christmas light tours with my mom and best friends. I remember looking at the seasonal décor on the front doors and always smiling. I love to make a statement when I decorate our front door. It is where friends and family join us on such a magical holiday. We have two giant nutcrackers that I am obsessed with — also from Sam’s Club. Christmas wreaths, garland and oversized ornaments are a must. How I switch it up: Change out my wreaths or add to existing wreath.

2019 CHRISTMAS TRENDS 2019 CHRISTMAS DECOR TRENDS
HERE’S WHAT I’M LOVING AS WE ENTER THE HOLIDAY SEASON: • Wood accents like wooden bead garland or a birch angel tree topper • Antique-style ornaments • Brass reindeer • Flocked trees/wreaths/ garland • Textured stockings • Mercury glass trees, in a grouping • Emerald green and antique brass accents • Feather wreaths • Acrylic details • Trays — add a statement tray under your mercury trees or blessing beads with a simple green plant or gorgeous fresh flowers. Remember, Christmas decor sells out early, so don’t wait! Adrienne Elliott is an interior designer, fashion enthusiast, wife and mom to three girls. Learn more about her at adrienneelliott.com.

GCW AFFILIATE
Givers
Teaching kids to be As parents, we all want our children to grow up to be successful. We also want them to be grateful for what they have and compassionate to those in need. Teaching children the spirit of giving, showing them the importance of thinking of others and modeling kindness are impactful ways to help them grow into productive and loving members of our community.
MODEL GENEROSITY
Children learn by observing their parents. They notice when you serve others and express thankfulness. As your child watches you generously give your time and energy to charitable causes, they will be more apt to become givers themselves. Show appreciation for all that you have, including the small things. EXPECTATION TO SERVE
Children thrive when parents have clear expectations for behavior and enforce those standards consistently. They need to know their contribution to serving others is valuable and very much part of your family's mission. YOUR WORDS MATTER
When you see your child being generous, thank them. This gives them confidence and reinforces positive behavior. ENCOURAGE
Encourage your child from an early age to help others. Everyday moments offer children a chance to make a difference, whether it be a random act of kindness or a sincere gesture. 106
December 2019
OPPORTUNITIES TO SERVE
As they grow up, give your child opportunities to serve. Generosity includes being generous with our time and skills.
HOSPITALITY
Teach your child how to make others feel welcome. It could be a new friend at school or a new family in the neighborhood. Show care and concern, and ask if they need anything to get settled into their new life. Some examples of hospitality in action, in which children can be involved, are baking cookies, helping unpack or making a list of local places to eat/play/ worship. MAKE IT A TRADITION
Family traditions hold a special place in our hearts. Add a new tradition to serve your community together. As a family, pick a cause or charity with a meaningful mission you want to support. THE JOY OF GIVING
In time, with your guidance and example, your child can find true happiness in giving rather than receiving. Giving can expand their understanding, develop their skills and provide them with a sense of purpose. MAKE IT THEIR OWN
Ask your children if there is a cause close to their heart. Help them find ways to contribute by serving, volunteering or fundraising.

SHUTTER DESK
BY HOLLY LEMOINE-RAYMOND
HERE’S WHAT YOU’LL NEED: • One shutter (length depends on space you are filling) • Circular saw (to cut the shutter) • Saw horses • Sandpaper • Paint or stain • Glass or Plexiglas (To put on top of Shutter) • Tape measure • Speed square • Safety Glasses • Drill • Screws • Wood Pencil • Wire Cutters • Palette board or scrap wood • Bracket/corbel (make or buy) STEP ONE:
STEP FOUR:
Clean and sand the shutter. This will be the time you could paint or stain the shutter. I left mine natural because I liked the look it gave to the She-Shed. While you have your paint or stain handy, you may want to paint the bracket/corbels to prepare them for a step later. STEP FIVE:
Obtain the glass or Plexiglas to place on top of the desk. Since you’ve already measured the shutter for proper size, you will not have to measure. STEP SIX:
Use the wire cutters to remove the handle/lever that opens and close the shutters (Some may not have one).
Measure the space where the desk will be permanently installed. It can be in a nook, a shed, or a space with three STEP SEVEN: walls. Find the studs in the wall then secure the bracket/ corbel to the wall. The normal height of a desk is 28 STEP TWO: to 30 inches. Be sure to measure the wall for proper Obtain a shutter. I used one I got from a friend of mine placement of the bracket/corbel. who has a house on the beach. I knew I could bring new life to it. STEP THREE:
Measure, mark, and cut the shutter using the circular saw.
STEP EIGHT:
If you’d like to make the desk look a bit thicker, you can add fence boards to the front side of the shutter. STEP NINE:
Place the shutter on top of the bracket/corbel. For extra support we added screws under the desk into the wall as well. 110

Choose
love, gratitude
My father passed away unexpectedly in 2008, and my mother in 2016. I have to admit that the “first” holidays and events after the loss of my father were not as difficult for me as they were BY KATHY ROGERS after my mother passed. There could be many reasons for that. My father, though I loved him dearly, was much more difficult to deal with and take care of. Perhaps it is because my mother suffered a stroke in 2011 and lived with me for five years before her death. Since she liked to have the door to her room closed, I kept it open after her death; it helped to remind me she was in heaven. I remember how purposeful my sisters and I were those first few years in honoring my mother at Christmas after she passed. She loved her grandchildren, and she loved to give them gifts. We selected some of her treasured things and gave those items to them in her name. We went around the room and shared stories about her — what precious memories! We talked about tricks played on her, the times she and my father took the grandchildren on vacations without their parents. We remembered how they thought they should spend the night with her on Friday because she didn’t work on Saturday, and how hard she would make you work. There were many laughs mingled with our tears. While I have a heritage of family celebrations and fond memories of the holidays, many others unfortunately don’t. Maybe you have good memories but are far from home and it’s not possible for you to return for the holidays. How can you avoid or overcome the holiday blues? First, I encourage you to choose what you think about. When you find yourself going down the path of painful memories, turn your thoughts around and think of something positive. My family is far from perfect. We have struggled through job loss, infidelity, divorce, suicide, accidents and health crises; I could continue the list, but you get my point. In all of these situations I have always, though not necessarily immediately, been able to find something to be thankful for. Try it with me, you will find there is something to be thankful for if you choose to look for it. 114
December 2019
Perhaps like my family, yours was touched by suicide. You, like me, can choose to be thankful that your loved ones lived. I chose to talk about my niece, Nancy. I treasure a handwritten note she gave me telling me I was the best aunt, and I remember how she liked me to take her clothes shopping. Although I mourn her, I choose to celebrate that she lived. Second, choose not to sit home in depression or isolation. I founded a nonprofit called Adopt a Grandparent Day specifically to bring awareness to the plight of the residents of local nursing homes. Did you know that 60 percent of residents have no visitors? Contact a nursing home nearby and schedule a visit. Perhaps you will meet a new friend who will become like a sibling, aunt, uncle, parent or grandparent. How about volunteering at a local soup kitchen like Feed My Sheep? Serving those less fortunate than yourself can generate thankfulness. Have your children moved away and won’t be home for the holidays? Perhaps you have no children or lost your children? Reach out to the young parents in your local church, civic groups or at work and invite them over. The actions of others can cause us to believe they don’t deserve love; maybe they don’t. Maybe we haven’t always deserved love, either. Perhaps you must love them from afar; nonetheless, choose love. START THE NEW YEAR WITH A
coverage checkup
It’s hard to believe we are in the final days of 2019! With so many changes during the year, it’s a good time to review your insurance coverage. COMBAT RISING RATES
Did your home insurance rates increase in 2019? Weather-related catastrophes have been steadily increasing, and the expense to repair a home also has increased; both issues have caused rate hikes. A few things you may consider to keep your rates as low as possible: • Check around with other insurance companies, and be sure to verify the financial rating for the new company you are considering. • Ensure your coverage levels are appropriate. Replacement cost at the correct value is your best protection. • Keep your home well maintained and update any outdated electrical, plumbing, roofing and A/C or heating. Home updates help lower the policy rate. • Be sure your mortgage clause is up to date to avoid problems at policy renewal time.
change, your policies may need to be updated. • If you begin renting out your home, you may need to change the type of policy used to cover it. A long-term renter will need their own renter or tenant occupancy insurance. Failure to advise your insurer of residency changes can result in voiding of insurance contracts. Short-term rentals may require a commercial insurance policy for your protection. • If you have purchased new cars, boats or toys, make sure you have all of your assets protected. • If you work from home, discuss your home-based business with your agent to ensure your business liability and assets are protected. REVIEW YOUR ASSETS
COMMUNICATE WITH YOUR AGENT
How much do YOU have to lose? In today’s litigious society, how do you know if you have enough insurance coverage to protect you and your assets in the event of a lawsuit? Umbrella policies provide additional liability coverage above the limits of your home, auto and boat insurance policies and sometimes may be used to provide coverage for claims excluded from your primary policies.
Tell your insurance agent about any major changes during the year, such as: • If your marital status or household members

Year-end tax tips
BY TINA PERKINS
Close out 2019 with smart money moves Merry Christmas to all! My gift to you is a dozen tips that will help make you tax efficient for 2019.
1
COMPLETE A MOCK RETURN
Know your 2019 tax position and tax bracket now so you can determine which tax strategies will work best for you. High-income taxpayers need strategies to remove income from the top income tax brackets, and low-income taxpayers need to maximize the tax-saving strategies available at the lower brackets.
2
SELL LOSER STOCKS
Sell loser investments and offset your gains. You can use up to $3,000 of any excess losses to reduce other income. Losses greater than $3,000 will carry forward to next year. Be aware of the wash sale rules so you don’t lose the tax deduction.
118
December 2019
3
SELL APPRECIATED STOCKS
Consider selling appreciated stock if you have capital losses and are in a high tax bracket. Your gain will be reduced or eliminated by your capital loss. For those in the lower tax brackets, your net gain will not be taxed. You can repurchase the stock, thereby effectively increasing your stock basis.
4
PAY OUT “REASONABLE COMPENSATION”
Make sure your s-corporation shareholder-employee’s salary meets the “reasonable compensation” standard. If a salary has not been taken, take one now.
5
PAY YOUR PROPERTY TAXES IN THE YEAR YOU GET THE BETTER TAX BENEFIT
If you itemize or have rental
property, decide which year (2019 or 2020) you pay your property taxes will yield you the better benefit. You have until Feb. 1, 2020, to pay your taxes and not incur a penalty.
6
DONATE TO YOUR FAVORITE CHARITY
Consider making your 2020 charitable gifts in 2019 if you itemize. Over the holidays, clean out your closets and donate household goods or even a vehicle to a charity. For those subject to the required minimum distribution, have your IRA distribution sent directly to the charitable organization. You forego the charitable deduction, but your distribution won’t be taxable.
7
MAKE A MORTGAGE PAYMENT
A last-minute mortgage payment will increase your mortgage interest expense.
8
MAKE YOUR HOME MORE ENERGY-EFFICIENT
This non-refundable credit is worth 30 percent of the cost of the energy-efficient equipment plus installation. Any unused portion of the credit can be carried forward to next year’s tax return. Qualify by purchasing energy-efficient exterior doors or windows, heating and air conditioning systems, water heaters and biomass stoves for new construction or home improvements.
9
BUY A FUEL-EFFICIENT VEHICLE
Get a tax credit up to $7,500 for purchasing a qualified plug-in electric drive motor vehicle (including a passenger vehicle or a light trucks). The amount of the credit is based on the kilowatt hours of capacity. Take caution in making your purchase because the credit begins to phase out when a manufacturer has sold at least 200,000 qualifying vehicles.

SPEND YOUR FSA MONEY
Flexible Spending Arrangement accounts are generally “use-it-or-lose-it” plans. If your FSA employer has not adopted a grace period, then make last-minute dental check-ups, eye exams and prescription eyeglass purchases.
11
CONTRIBUTE TO YOUR RETIREMENT
Contributing to a retirement account is a great way to not only defer income tax, but also to grow your investment through compounding. You also should maximize your company-sponsored 401(k) contribution to take advantage of the employer’s matching. Those in the lower tax bracket should consider contributing to a Roth IRA. Contributions to an IRA, ABLE account or employer-sponsored retirement plan could make you eligible for the retirement savers credit.
12
GIFT UP TO THE ANNUAL LIMIT
The annual limit is $15,000 per person, so mom and dad effectively could pass on $60,000 to their married child and their spouse. (This is less income tax related and more estate planning related.)

THE OTHER DRIVERS OF
'gray divorce' THIS IS THE PART 2 OF A 2-PART SERIES EXPLORING THE PHENOMENON OF DIVORCE AMONG THE OLDER POPULATION.
Previously, I’ve discussed the role money and sex can have in driving “gray divorce” — the growing trend of older couples going their separate ways. Here are some other causes that appear to be at play: INCOMPATIBILITY

December 2019
Most states have adopted some basis for getting a divorce so one spouse doesn’t have to make nasty allegations against the other in court. Some refer to this as a “no-fault” divorce. There’s typically a requirement that the couple have lived separate and apart long enough for the law to conclude they have no intention of continuing to be husband and wife. In general, the basis for this divorce is that the couple can’t continue to live in peace and happiness together because they are incompatible and can’t reconcile their differences. About 80 percent of divorces are filed upon such “no-fault” grounds, but in reality, deeper reasons probably are at play, and such allegations are just a convenient way to end the relationship. GROWING APART
Some couples simply grow apart. It may be because one person wants to live it up while the other is a couch potato or interested in living in a different way. One may want to travel the world while the other wants a weekly, established routine. There may not be infidelity or a major blowup, but some other change has caused one or both parties to no longer focus on children or career — causing them to discover they have grown further apart with each passing year. Now that the couple has more time, they realize they no longer know their spouse or feel compatible. Also, with older couples, they may have felt regret and unhappiness for a long time but didn’t decide to leave until triggered by an opportunity, such as retirement or
One in five men who remarry wed a woman at least 10 years their junior an empty nest. For some, it is a sense that they do not want to spend their remaining years in an unhappy marriage and want the opportunity to seek greater fulfillment. No matter the reason, many find that their middle-age years bring an opportunity to break up. TRYING TO STALL OR REVERSE AGING
Perhaps the classic situation that people think about in a “gray divorce” is that a spouse is trying to stall or reverse aging. After so many years of looking, dressing or feeling the same way, the person wants to change the way he looks or lives his life. He may want to lose weight, improve his appearance, feel younger and trade in his spouse for someone younger. According to a 2016 Pew Research Center analysis of Census data, one in five men who remarry wed a woman at least 10 years their junior. By contrast, only one in 20 men on their first marriage pair up with someone that young. While 80 percent of men in their first marriages have spouses within five years of their age, that share drops to 57 percent by the second marriage. For women, the numbers are essentially the reverse.
Seven percent of women have spouses more than 10 years their senior in their first marriages, a share that nearly doubles to 13 percent by the second marriage. Interestingly, though, some women also are more likely to marry younger men on their second trip to the altar. Only 3 percent of women in their first marriages walk down the aisle with men more than five years younger than them. By the second marriage, that share rises to 11 percent. So for at least 11 percent of the women in their second marriage, marrying a younger man also has an appeal. Needless to say, regardless of the reason, those contemplating a divorce should discuss it with an attorney to ensure they do not face an unintended financial crisis. If someone over the age of 50 is contemplating a divorce, it is even more critical to look at the financial impact before making the leap. Kathy Brown van Zutphen is an attorney licensed to practice law in Alabama and Mississippi. She focuses on the “elder law” areas of trusts, estates and conservatorships. Additionally, she litigates lawsuits and represents small business owners as part of her legal practice. Visit her website to learn more: www. al-mscoastallaw.com. Don’t just plan,
execute
“Vision without execution is a hallucination.” - Albert Einstein
I love my job. I get to help leadership teams create visions for their companies’ futures and the plans to make them happen. After we do the hard work of creating the plans and assigning specific goals and tasks, the team members go back and execute … or at least they’re supposed to. Often, new teams have a problem with execution. If we can’t execute, it doesn’t matter how grand our plans are; we’ll never achieve them. So how can we improve our execution?
recommend that leaders share their goals with their team (or with your entire company). In addition to the extra accountability, it also allows team members to create supporting goals or help with the primary goal when needed.
BY RYAN GILES
1. GET CRYSTAL CLEAR ON THE GOAL
Make your goals SMART (specific, measurable, attainable, relevant and timely). This ensures you know what to do and when to do it. 2. LESS, BUT BETTER
5. BLOCK YOUR TIME
Have you ever reached 5 p.m. and wondered what you did all day? Have you been stuck fighting fires and reacting? Block time on your calendar to proactively work on your goals. Hold this time as sacred, and make it a priority. Managing your time is really managing your priorities and managing your energy. 6. REPORT REGULARLY
I recommend that all team members report on the progress of their goals each week during their team meeting. Your team is meeting each week, right? 7. BE IN PEAK SHAPE
It’s no secret that you will have more physical and mental energy if you exercise, get plenty of sleep and eat right. You know you need to, so just do it!
Focus on fewer, but more important, things to make a bigger impact. Don’t confuse activity with progress (quality over quantity).
8. CELEBRATE YOUR WIN
3. JUST SAY “NO.”
Once you’ve executed your plan and achieved your goal, take a minute to celebrate. You deserve it.
When other things try to steal your focus, just say “no.” 4. SHARE
Share with the company for extra accountability. I

Jeanfreau named Karen Sock Woman of the Year Amid a standing ovation, Dr. Michelle Jeanfreau recently offered some words of encouragement to dozens of other accomplished women. “You determine your worth,” said Jeanfreau, an assistant professor in the School of Child and Family Sciences at the University of Southern Mississippi, as well as a licensed marriage and family therapist. “And you can accomplish anything you set your mind to.” Jeanfreau was named the 2019 Karen Sock Woman of the Year at the Lighthouse Business & Professional Women Women of Achievement Awards, held at the Scarlett Pearl Casino Resort. In all, 39 women were recognized as Women of Achievement during the October luncheon. A winner was announced in seven categories, and Jeanfreau triumphed in the education category.
