resilience

What

looks like

The aftermath is all too familiar to south Mississippians: downed trees and power lines, shingles and siding stripped from homes, debris littering the streets, days without electricity — to say nothing of the frayed nerves. When Hurricane Zeta barreled into the Gulf Coast on Oct.

RACHEL DANGERMOND Director, 100 Men Hall

The 100 Men Hall, a Bay St. Louis landmark, sustained severe roof damage in Zeta, and The Tin Shed, a structure that hosts an artist in residence, also required repairs. Dangermond worked to raise awareness of and funding for the project. “I’ve been through enough crisis in my life, so the first thing that went through my mind after seeing the damage was, ‘It could have been worse,’ she says. “I also look for silver linings because there are always silver linings. “The first silver lining was seeing the outpouring of support and love from friends and the community, and even from strangers in other countries. This was a gentle reminder that the 100 Men Hall, a

rare African-American landmark and one of the few physical buildings standing on the Mississippi Blues Trail, matters — and the work we are doing to preserve and maintain it is supported by many.” To donate to the 100 Men Hall roofraising fund, visit https://the100menhall. com/products/donate, contribute via PayPal (100MenHall@gmail.com), contribute via Venmo (Rachel-Dangermond) or mail a check to 100 Men Hall, 303 Union St., Bay Saint Louis, MS 39520. HEATHER EASON Founder, Comeback Coolers

Heather Eason established Comeback Coolers in Ocean Springs, but ironically, Zeta was its first mission in Mississippi. After the storm, the organization coordinated a

quick mission and delivered about 90 coolers, supplies for 100 linemen and about 75 kids’ coolers. Most of the supplies were delivered in Gulfport, Long Beach and Pass Christian. “It was nice to be able to help in a local way and the people were kind, hard-working, and appreciative,” Eason says. After seeing the damage, she adds, “we realized the true implications of the storm — and the resilience of our neighbors.” “One thing we noticed during this mission was the many children who were helping with cleanup,” she says. “Every child we saw got their own kids’ Comeback Cooler. One child even exclaimed, ‘Hard work really does pay off!’ That was one of the many highlights of the day.” Support or learn more about Comeback Coolers at https://www.comebackcoolers. com.

John Charles Robinson of Gulfport was an American aviator and activist who was hailed as the “Brown Condor” for his service in the Imperial Ethiopian Air Force against Fascist Italy.

REP. SONYA WILLIAMS BARNES Mississippi House of Representatives, 119th District

‘The first silver lining was seeing the outpouring of support and love from friends and the community”

Zeta hit days before a significant election, but that didn’t deter state Rep. Barnes from springing into action. She managed to feed a hot meal to her community, get people to vote on the last day of absentee voting and distribute tarps and water with her friend, U.S. Senate candidate Mike Espy. “I would not have it any other way other than serving House District 119,” she told her Facebook followers on Nov. 1. “A long, hot bath would have been how I would end a day like this, but without power, a quick, cold shower would suffice!”

KEN TIMS Retired from federal government (U.S. Department of Defense, Navy, Ingalls Shipbuilding), volunteer

Northwood Church has a number of SERVE volunteer groups, and Tims has led and participated in many efforts at the Women’s Resource Center and elsewhere. When Zeta blew shingles and siding off of a WRC storage building, Tims stepped forward to help repair and replace them. If you take the time to stop and ask, Tims says, it doesn’t take long to find someone seeking help. There are many needs out there, he adds — “and so I just go.” “I have prayed many times to have the eyes of compassion of our Lord and the hands and feet to do something about it,” Tims says. “If I sit in the easy chair, nothing gets done, and we miss out on a lot of blessings.”

JAMES EDWARD BATES Owner of James Edward Bates Photography, volunteer with The Giving BAK Foundation

Giving BAK’s primary mission is to partner with churches or other Christian organizations in the wake of disasters, according to Bates, and volunteers often start serving food less than 24 hours following an event. After Zeta, he says, the nonprofit provided hot meals for first responders from Feed My Sheep’s Gulfport location, including smoked chicken and pulled pork. The BAK in Giving BAK Foundation stands for “Build A Kingdom,” and Bates says for members, “It’s about loving our neighbors in the name of Jesus Christ in their greatest times of need.” “We want to be the hands and feet of Jesus and help churches in disaster zones help their local community,” he says. “God directs us to love our neighbors. We think providing delicious, hot meals is a pretty good way to do that. We could not have done this without local community support.” To support Giving BAK or learn more, visit www.GivingBAK.org.

‘THIS YEAR SHOULD BE DIFFERENT’’ FORGET RESOLUTIONS — FIND PURPOSE NEXT YEAR BY SHEENA MYLES

Five, four, three, two, one — Happy New Year! Very soon, we will count down to 2021 — and what a welcome it will receive. We’ve sent many bat signals awaiting its arrival, and it’s nearly here. Finally, we can live again and no longer be in a vegetative state of disgust, dismay, distrust and distance. This will be the year of reconciliation. At last, we will be able to relax, relate and release. We shall recover and heal — or so we hope. As I gather my notepad and planner and frantically search for a writing utensil, I can feel the anxiety build. Sweat starts to form just above my brow and on my hands. I can feel myself shiver and shake as I prepare to post my resolutions. What is there to resolve? How can I improve on what I was supposed to have done for the last nine months when I was mandated to be alone with me? I can promise to exercise more often, attend religious services, travel more or save money. However, this year should be different. I have learned enough to know that I will not be doing these things. Why? Because I didn’t do them when I had time, and I didn’t do them when I didn’t have time. I’m really disinterested in all of the New Year’s holiday hoopla. After 2020, I need recovery! I plan to rejuvenate. Let me remember to slow down daily. I overheard people talking about self-care in 2020. Maybe I can try some of that — who knows? The one thing I’m sure of is that 2021 absolutely will not hold me

22

hostage. Let’s be honest, 2020 was the equivalent of driving a muddy car with the windshield acting as your only window to the world. The windshield may have muddy streaks, but it let the sunshine and moonlight in. I want a different type of dirty, the kind that becomes the glue that holds my foundational bricks of elevation and progress together. I want to be so dirty that my dreams know they can grow safely in my new self-preservation garden. For 2021, I will not dry out and wilt away. I will choose to live. Every raindrop that hits my face will water my soul. Every breeze will blow my mind. Every ray of sunshine will brighten my day. I don’t need resolutions; I need purpose. 2021, you are old enough to eat, drink, and be merry. You won’t have to do it alone; I’ll be your plus one. Don’t just survive

Thrive

in 2021

If you’re in business, here’s what you need to be thinking about right now We asked some local leaders and experts how you can come out of the pandemic even better than you went in — and what you should be focusing on as the year ends. Read on for their words of wisdom:

allow you the opportunity to be proactive in your approach to the coming year.

DENISE HOWELL President, Howell CPA, PA

SHEILA FARR Owner, Gulf Coast Training & Education Services LLC

GENEVA DUMMER Owner/Operator, The Meeting Place

What’s your best advice for “leveling up,” not just surviving, in the wake of the pandemic? Challenging times provide opportunities for business owners to reinvent themselves. To remain relevant and maintain a viable business, it is important to develop a carefully planned and well-executed approach that’s innovative. Find new ways to meet the needs of your customers and build your network to share your new strategies!

What’s your best advice for “leveling up,” not just surviving, in the wake of the pandemic? Focus foremost on emotional health. Many ladies, including myself, have expressed a desire to “declutter.” I have cleaned out and redesigned my pantry and kitchen cabinets; I feel 50 pounds lighter. I plan to continue this throughout my apartment this fall. Tune into your inner spirit; tune into God and receive rest and restoration to enter the new year refreshed and hopeful.

What’s your best advice for “leveling up,” not just surviving, in the wake of the pandemic? Stay on top of your bookkeeping. I find that paying bills gives me a feeling of reassurance and empowerment that helps me be more resourceful and proactive when I’m up against a lean month because I know what to expect and how best to adapt. Also, get your collections under control. Make sure your terms are clearly outlined in your client agreement and that you stick to them when people make zero effort to bring their accounts current. On the flip side, don’t forget to be compassionate and sensitive to your clients’ needs. Sometimes they may need more or less of what you have to offer, and that’s OK. Waiving the late fee when someone really needs it goes a long way. What is the one thing business owners should be thinking about right now? Nonprofits need to be finalizing their annual reports for distribution to donors on or before the Dec. 15. For-profit enterprises should be reviewing their annual numbers and compiling their own annual report for in-house use. Not only will this put you in a great position for filing your taxes, but it also will

24

December 2020

What is the one thing business owners should be thinking about right now? Business growth opportunities often present themselves when you know the right people, and the one thing business owners need to be focusing on right now is collaboration. Finding the right person to help share information about your business and products or services can help grow your business by leaps and bounds. This is especially true during a global pandemic, when entrepreneurs are all trying to connect and help each other stay afloat. That’s why I recommend focusing on networking right now — not just building new, valuable connections, but keeping your existing contacts apprised of your goals and progress. Communicating across a strong network of customers and business associates can help you not only survive, but thrive, in challenging economic times.

What is the one thing business owners should be thinking about right now? They need to be thinking about year-end planning. We have no idea what Congress will do to alleviate financial burdens facing small businesses. The Small Business Administration has issued a new, “simple” form for requesting forgiveness from the Paycheck Protection Program (PPP) loans; we are still expecting more updates to the forgiveness filing procedures to make it even more “simple.” Congress will pass its final regulations and tax cuts for the year in the first two weeks of December. No one has any idea what, if any, tax breaks will be afforded to small businesses. Everyone agrees that state and local governments, medical facilities and small businesses need assistance. However, so far, they have been unable to agree on how to distribute assistance. I advise to be prepared for no tax breaks or financial assistance. Stay tuned for legislation issued in December.

cookie showcase Giving just got sweeter! We may not attend as many get-togethers this season, or have as much money for gifts, but here’s the good news: We don’t need to compromise safety or spend a lot of dough — at least the financial kind — to spread holiday cheer. Why not share some delicious holiday treats with the special people on your gift list? These cookies, provided by some of the Coast’s best bakers, are sure to put a sparkle in your loved ones’ eyes. Don’t forget to leave some out for Santa!

SHORTBREAD COOKIES AND ROYAL ICING Submitted by Brooke Rester, owner of Dolce Bakeshop, which has been a popular sweet spot in downtown Long Beach for nearly four years. “I chose to share this recipe because this is the recipe that we share with our students who take our cookiedecorating classes,” Rester says. “Plus, our decorated cookies are the most popular at Christmastime.”

SHORTBREAD:

• One pound of unsalted butter, room temperature • One cup of granulated sugar • One teaspoon vanilla extract • 4 1/2 cups all-purpose flour

• In a stand mixer, beat butter and sugar on medium speed together until fluffy and pale in color. Add vanilla. • With mixer on low, slowly add in flour. Only mix until incorporated; do not overmix. If dough feels soft and sticky, wrap in plastic wrap and chill for an hour. • Roll dough out onto lightly floured surface to one-fourth-inch thick. Stamp out shapes using your favorite cookie cutters and place onto parchment-lined pan. • Chill again for 20 minutes. Bake at 350 degrees for 10-12 minutes or until the edges are golden brown and the center is cooked through. Once cooled, decorate with royal icing or any icing of your choice.

ROYAL ICING:

• Four tablespoons meringue powder • 1/2 cup water • Four cups powdered sugar • Flavoring of your choice

• Mix meringue powder and water until frothy. Slowly add in powdered sugar. • Beat on high for about five minutes. Use this consistency for piping and decorating. You may also add more water a little at a time to make a thinner consistency to use for filling in larger designs.

MEXICAN WEDDING COOKIE

Submitted by Renee Loranger, an experienced master pastry chef and cake designer. The Bay St. Louis-based baker recently competed on the Food Network’s “Halloween Baking Championship.” “This is my favorite cookie for the holidays,” she says. “It melts in your mouth. Super popular, everyone really seems to love them. It is also a really easy recipe with only five ingredients, so it comes together really fast.” • 16 ounces shortening • Eight ounces powdered sugar — more for finishing • 1 1/2 teaspoons salt • 14 ounces cake flour • 10 ounces pecans

• Cream the shortening, salt, and powdered sugar together; scrape the bowl. • Add the flour and mix just till it comes together. Add pecans, and fold in • Scoop onto parchment-lined cookie sheet • Bake at 350 degrees for eight to 10 minutes, just until slightly golden on the bottom edges and the top is not shiny. • Let cool, roll in powdered sugar and enjoy!

GINGERBREAD COOKIES

Submitted by Jennifer Noble, owner of Cheeky Monkey Cake Company — a family-owned Biloxi bakery known for wedding cakes, specialty cakes and all kinds of baked goods. “I chose this recipe as it is a classic gingerbread recipe and one that is very popular in my own family,” Noble says. “It reminds me of walking home from school as a child and stopping by the hometown bakery on the way to my grandmother’s, and we would have warm gingerbread and milk after school.” • 12 tablespoons (170g) unsalted butter • 3/4 cup (159g) brown sugar, packed • 3/4 cup (255g) molasses • One teaspoon salt • Two teaspoons cinnamon • Two teaspoons ginger • 1/4 teaspoon allspice or cloves • One large egg • One teaspoon baking powder • 1/2 teaspoon baking soda • 3 3/4 cups (447g) unbleached, all-purpose flour

• In a saucepan set over low heat, or in the microwave, melt butter, then stir in the brown sugar, molasses, salt and spices. • Transfer the mixture to a medium-sized mixing bowl, let it cool to lukewarm and beat in the egg. • Whisk the baking powder and soda into the flour, then stir the dry ingredients into the molasses mixture. The dough will be very soft and sticky, but don’t be tempted to add more flour; it’ll firm up once it’s chilled. • Divide the dough in half and pat each half into a thick rectangle. Wrap well and refrigerate for an hour or longer. The

dough may be sticky and hard to roll if not thoroughly chilled, so make sure it’s cold before continuing. • Preheat your oven to 350 degrees. Get out several baking sheets and line with parchment paper. • Once the dough has chilled, take one piece of dough from the refrigerator and flour a clean work surface. Roll the dough one-eighth- to one-fourth-inch thick; the thinner the dough, the crispier the cookies. Flour both the top and bottom of the dough if it starts to stick. Alternatively, place the dough on parchment, and put a sheet of plastic wrap over it as you roll, pulling the plastic to eliminate wrinkles as necessary when rolling; this will keep dough from sticking without the need for additional flour. • Cut out shapes with a floured cookie cutter, cutting them as close to one another as possible to minimize waste. • Transfer the cookies to the parchment-lined cookie sheets (or, if you’ve rolled right onto the parchment, remove the dough scraps between the cookies). Bake the cookies until they’re slightly brown around the edges, eight to 12 minutes, or until they feel firm. Let the cookies cool on the baking sheets for several minutes, or until they’re set. Transfer them to a rack to cool completely. Repeat with the remaining dough. • Decorate the cookies with a royal icing if desired, or just enjoy as they are.

Merry memories Sutton family spreads Christmas joy at Gulfport home BY JENNIFER GENTILE

Step into the Sutton family’s den this time of year, and a striking Christmas tree is sure to put you in the holiday spirit. “(The tree) stands 10 feet tall with gold ornaments along with touches of black and white to show our love for the Saints,” says homeowner Christie Butts Sutton. “Each present wrapped under the Christmas tree is wrapped in gold and platinum as well.” Sutton, a stay-at-home mom, lives in the 3,905 square-foot Gulfport home with her husband, Dr. Trey Sutton; her

34

December 2020

12-year-old daughter, Sadie; and her 3-year-old Lhasa Apso, Lexie. The Suttons bought the home on Stanton Circle a decade ago. “We were thrilled when we found this home on the market because we were looking for a neighborhood for Sadie to grow up in with plenty of children for her to have bike rides and lemonade stands,” Sutton says. “Stanton Place has been the perfect neighborhood for us!” The family has made many holiday memories in their home, and some of Sutton’s favorites include building gingerbread houses with Sadie, baking cookies for Santa and leaving “reindeer

food” in the front yard on Christmas Eve night. A group of children also go caroling throughout the neighborhood, she says, “which is always a delight.” The family goes out of town for Thanksgiving, which Sutton deems the “perfect excuse” to start decorating early. “Since we moved into our home, we have always had a Saints-themed Christmas tree and a collection of manger scenes,” she says, “and we have angels throughout our home in memory of loved ones we have lost too soon.” Sutton credits Sadie Jane’s in Gulfport with making the property gorgeous inside and out for the holidays. Last December, the house was featured in the Gulfport Civic League’s Tour of Homes — “Christmas on the Island.” It takes Sadie Jane’s several days to decorate, according to Sutton, because they don’t miss a thing. “They added beautiful platinums, golds with white and touches of black to compliment every detail of our home,” she says. 2020 is the second year the Suttons have entrusted their home’s holiday aesthetic to the mother-daughter team at Sadie Jane’s — Jeanne Brackin and Ashley Fillingame. With every detail, Brackin says, “we try to make their vision come to life.” “The look we were going for (at the Suttons’ home) was classically elegant,” says Brackin, “with a touch of whimsy that we added with pops of black and white.” The pair use both faux and fresh flowers and greenery to achieve a jaw-dropping result. They also like to incorporate the homeowners’ own heirlooms and keepsakes to make the design unique and special. A favorite feature of both the Suttons and the Sadie Jane’s team is a platinum-colored Christmas tree in Sadie’s room, which stands 5 feet tall and is adorned with sparkling lights, hanging crystals and pink accents.

While Christmastime certainly will look different this year due to Covid-19, Sutton says she intends to stay positive — and to focus on what really matters. “This year has definitely been a year to remember, but this Christmas, we will truly cherish the time we spend together with our family and close friends,” she says. “Most importantly, my family never forgets the true reason for the season.”

ith more than 100 places to shop, eat and play, Edgewater Mall has “something for everyone.” If fact, that’s the Biloxi shopping center’s new slogan, and Alyssa Rose, administrative assistant and event coordinator, encourages those who haven’t visited in a while to stop by. Patrons can complete their Christmas shopping in one fell swoop at popular stores like Dillard’s, Belk, JC Penney’s, Victoria's Secret, Bath and Body Works, Bella Rose Boutique, Buckle, American Eagle, Sunglass World and many more. Ronahi Embroidery & Mosaic opened shortly after the shutdown, which offers custom embroidery, mosaic lamps all varying sizes and shapes and more, Rose says, and Peek-a-boo’s, a children’s clothing store, will open soon. For the Holidays, the mall has partnered with WXXV-TV to host a “25 Days of Christmas” scavenger hunt. QR Codes are hidden in common areas throughout the mall for visitors to find, and each is connected to a prize from an Edgewater tenant. Each participant has the opportunity to be in a drawing, and a winner will be chosen every weekday through Dec. 18. Additionally, “we are excited to welcome Santa back this year,” Rose says. The mall has taken extra precautions, she adds — placing a 4-by-6-foot plexi shield in front of Santa so guests can interact with him safely.

Sharon Weeks takes Coast style to the next level

S

haron Weeks realizes that even in the digital age, nothing beats tried-and-true sales techniques, especially during the Christmas shopping season. That’s why the large windows at Grant’s for Her, which she’s owned since 2018, are her favorite feature of the store — and the perfect place to display the store’s festive attire and hottest gift items this time of year. For the 2020 holiday season, she’s aiming for a “simple and clean” aesthetic with green trees, snowflakes and white lights. “We take great pride in keeping our window displays as fresh and attentiongrabbing as possible,” Weeks says. “We know that visuals and branding are the main elements that get people to walk into our shop; our windows provide us with the perfect setup to do just that.” Those displays showcase the high-end designer pieces available at Grant’s — an

upscale women’s boutique located in The Shops at Mary Mahoney’s. Weeks says the iconic location draws customers from near and far who appreciate the unique apparel and accessories Grant’s carries. “We pride ourselves on having the best customer service while also having a variety of the best brands and styles to choose from that aren’t offered anywhere else on the Gulf Coast,” she adds.

PASSION FOR FASHION

Although she’s always loved beautiful

clothing and accessories, Weeks didn’t always have a career in fashion. The eldest of eight children started working when she was 15 at The Daily Herald newspaper — where she stayed a part-time employee throughout high school and college. Afterward, she worked at the newspaper for over 20 years in the busines, marketing and administration departments. She joined the Beau Rivage hotel

management team in 1999, contributing to the launch of the 1,800-room resort. “This was one of my life’s biggest work challenges,” she recalls, “but also a very rewarding learning experience.” She remained with the Beau Rivage for a year before spending several years volunteering in several community organizations, including serving as board president for the Mental Health Association of South Mississippi for a decade, president of the Biloxi-Ocean Springs Junior Auxiliary and board member for the National Association of Junior Auxiliaries. It was only within the last 10 years, when she worked at several boutiques in Biloxi and Ocean Springs, that she became “keenly interested” in the retail side of the fashion industry. “I wouldn’t say I always dreamed of being an entrepreneur,” she says. “However, I did always have a dream of being able to make a living while doing something I truly love.”

Weeks started working at Grant’s in 2013 and ultimately purchased the boutique with her daughter, Shelby Brune. Owning her own business has been hard work, time consuming and stressful at times, she admits — yet extremely rewarding. “The reality of owning your own business is you must love, and I mean love, the business you go into,” Weeks advises, “and you must dedicate yourself, your time and your passion to make it successful.”

Meet the

your new outerwear obsession

MOTHER-DAUGHTER TEAM

No accomplishment has meant as much to Weeks as raising her daughter as a single mother. Brune, who lives in Los Angeles, recently opened her own fashion public relations firm, Allure PR Group, which represents a number of fashion and beauty brands, and Weeks says she and her business partner are constantly bouncing ideas off of each other to ensure the success of both businesses. “(Brune) is my inspiration, my motivator, my consultant, my counselor and my cheerleader — always has been,” Weeks says. “She was born a mentor to me and has led me throughout life with her positive, loving attitude.” She also considers her customers some of her best mentors — depending on them for information and advice that helps her decide how and where to shop for merchandise. The store’s luxe stock includes high-end clothing, leather handbags, jewelry, Italian scarves and linens, vintage jewelry, shoes, sunglasses and more — items women across the Coast and beyond will be hoping to find under the Christmas tree.

WEARABLE ART

In Weeks’s view, what people choose to wear is a form of art and expression. It has the power to affect how someone feels, to inspire and to create an atmosphere. “I believe fashion is important and meaningful because it can bring out positive energy …,” she says. “The way you dress shows everyone your personality and your mood without having to say a word.” Besides helping patrons hone their personal style, Grant’s has forged relationships with many of its designers and holds special events where they visit the store to meet customers and talk about their creations. The boutique also hosts fashion shows to benefit local organizations and contributes to fundraising efforts throughout the year.

GRATEFUL AND HOPEFUL

The boutique has weathered the challenges of 2020 by following all of the COVID-19 protocols and continuing its advertising and marketing efforts, according to Weeks. Now the holiday season is here, which she says is a special time at Grant’s. The store does everything possible to make shopping a pleasure — from offering beautiful gift wrap and refreshments to events and personal shopping. “It’s always fun, festive and relaxing,” Weeks says. “I just want everyone to de-stress when they come shop.” In 2021 and beyond, Weeks sees a long and successful road ahead for Grant’s, filled with the newest and greatest designers, broadened horizons and potential expansion into the home and beauty realm. “It’s tough to think too far ahead during these challenging times,” she says, “but we are so thankful for the support and loyalty of our customers.”

H

ave you ever heard of a shacket? If not, you will. Think of it like this: It’s a shirt and a jacket mixed together to create a wonderful blend of coziness. Outside, it looks like a relaxed shirt, but inside, it’s just as thick and warm as a heavy coat. This trend has been around since at least 2019, but it’s made a major splash in retail stores for the fall/winter season. I predict it will become a staple piece in your closet that will take you through every season — well, except summer. I love the shacket because it’s effortless while still providing a clean, styled look. Shackets now come in many styles and prints. The most popular print I’ve seen is plaid, which I love because it fits with the holiday season. But there are many other fabrics, colors, lengths and types to choose from — like faux leather, plaid, quilted, wool blend, shimmery metallic, long, short, oversized and even fitted. For styling, I went with something super simple. The shacket is a statement piece in itself, so I paired it with cute denim and a simple top and accessorized with a thick brimmed hat and a bold lip. If you love to layer, this trend is for you! One of the best things about the shacket is that it looks great on all body types, and it’s stylish without trying too hard. In fact, it may just be the new jean jacket. Jasmine Ball is a Mississippi fashion, beauty and lifestyle blogger. Best beauty buys FOR THE HOLIDAY SE A SON

It’s the time of year when we get to spoil all of our favorite people — and ourselves! Here are my favorite beauty splurges that anyone on your holiday gift list would be thrilled to receive:

BY CRISSY COX Crissy Cox is a freelance makeup artist on the Mississippi Gulf Coast, specializing in on-location wedding and special event makeup. Contact her or learn more at facebook.com/ CrissyCoxMUA.

HOURGLASS AMBIENT LIGHTING FACE PALETTE ($80, HOURGLASSCOSMETICS.COM)

Hourglass Cosmetics is famous for its immaculate complexion products and sell-out holiday collections. As we move into dryer winter weather, we need to focus on bringing life back to our skin. This palette includes a lightly luminous array of powder, blush and bronzer products, leaving your face with a soft-focus glow that’s flattering on any skin type or texture. If this price point is a little intimidating, there’s a more affordable mini edit as well.

THE ORIGINAL BEAUTYBLENDER ($20, ULTA.COM)

So, this is nothing new to the beauty world — but I can guarantee you that no beauty junkie would ever be upset about receiving a fresh, new BeautyBlender! For those who aren’t familiar with this product, it’s a small, egg-shaped sponge that expands when wet and delivers a smooth, airbrushed finish with your favorite face products by bouncing it over your skin. I have tried just about every beauty sponge on the market, and there are definitely some convincing dupes. However, I cannot deny the softness and full, flawless finish that the BeautyBlender provides every time. Just don’t forget to give yours a quick wash after each use to prevent buildup of mold or bacteria on your sponge.

BELIF AQUA BOMB DEEP HYDRATION SET (SEPHORA.COM, $38)

Let’s face it, many of us don’t want to splurge on good skincare — especially when so much of finding what jives well with our skin is trial and error. But I say it all the time: Nice skin is the canvas for nice makeup, so it’s important to pamper it when we can. Value sets like this are a great way to test a variety of luxury skincare products at an affordable price. This is the kind of thing we don’t always want to splurge on for ourselves, so it’s always nice to receive as a gift! Tip: when testing new skincare, introduce new products once every three days. This will allow you to pinpoint any products that don’t agree with your skin.

NATASHA DENONA GLAM PALETTE ($65, SEPHORA.COM)

It’s no secret that warm-toned eyeshadows have been all the rage for the last several years. I can’t tell you how many rich caramel and ruddy red shades I have in my collection. This palette is refreshing because it leans on the much cooler side of the spectrum, with sparkling champagnes, tarnished taupes and chocolate browns. Natasha Denona is known for her buttery and easily blendable eyeshadow formulas, so this is a great addition to any makeup lover’s collection.

Carnival in the Covid era Mardi Gras may be different in 2021, but expect the good times to still roll BY JENNIFER GENTILE

F

un in defiance of disaster is one of the Coast’s defining traits. So, it’s no surprise that with a pandemic throwing Mardi Gras plans into flux, groups like the Krewe of Gemini are taking the situation in stride — showing the stoicism of a community that has weathered its share of catastrophe and come back stronger. “We are proceeding and moving forward,” says Gemini’s ball captain Shellie Moses, “but we will face whatever challenges we are dealt with in 2021 with an adult beverage in one hand and a blinged-out mask on our face.” With its Gulfport parades approved and logistics progressing for a ball on Jan. 30, The Krewe of Gemini considers its plans “secure” — but some groups have made the difficult decision to cancel their 2021 activities. Several others are watching and waiting or have chosen to scale back their celebrations. For instance, The Ocean Springs Carnival Association will be limiting the number of tickets sold to its “Arabian Nights - A Whole New World” ball on Jan. 29 to comply with the half-capacity restriction at the Ocean Springs Civic Center. “We wanted to play on the fact that this year has been a whole new world for all of us,” says OSCA board member Eva Pund, “and since our ball has always been a ‘mask-required’ ball, we thought it would be fun incorporating the mask mandate into the theme with a little twist.” The Gulf Coast Carnival Association, the Coast’s oldest Mardi Gras group, has been rolling through the streets of Biloxi since 1908 — but the pandemic has forced some changes to its festivities. Planning for Mardi Gras takes a full year, says GCCA Board Chairman Kenny Holloway, and 2020 preparations have been difficult while state and local attendance limits remained in question. Mardi Gras is, after all, a “huge social gathering,” Holloway adds, which is problematic in the COVID-19 era

60

December 2020

— especially when the group’s annual parade typically is attended by 80,000plus revelers. The GCCA has chosen to defer the presentation of its incoming royal court to 2022. However, plans for the annual 5K run, a virtual silent auction, a Mardi Gras ball on Feb. 13, a parade and the possibile addition of a golf tournament are advancing. “GCCA is proceeding with Mardi Gras 2021, but in a different fashion,” Holloway and Jeff Elder, captain of carnival, explained in a letter to sponsors. “We are going to do everything within our ability to continue to let the show go on and are modifying events as necessary.” Similarly, The Revelers have set their 71st Annual Carnival Ball for Feb. 13, but according to treasurer John Heath, it only will happen if the city of Biloxi allows full capacity at the Biloxi Civic Center — which is over 1,000 attendees. “If they continue to limit the attendance to 500, the ball will be postponed until 2022,” he says. “We have 345 members, and with spouses and guests, we need the full capacity to accommodate all participants.” Citing a “need to put the health and wellbeing of our participants, guests, families and club members first and foremost, ahead of everything else,” The Southernettes are among the groups that postponed their annual ball until 2022. Others include Les Cavaliers, Le Belle Femme and Order of Billikins. The Southernettes’ decision to cancel was met with nothing but praise, according to president Valerie Moore. “This was not easy for us, as we have been ‘rolling’ for over 50 years,” Moore says, “but we cannot control this pandemic, and our court and participants were totally supportive and appreciative. We have an excellent group of members and participants who love this organization and truly support our success.” While the situation is unique,

"...we will face whatever challenges we are dealt with in 2021 with an adult beverage in one hand and a blinged-out mask on our face." according to Coastal Mississippi Mardi Gras Museum Executive Director Anna Harris, it’s not entirely without precedent. The Gulf Coast Carnival Association suspended parades during World War I and II and the Korean War. Two of the area’s oldest krewes, Les Masquees (established 1922) and Mithras (established 1923) paused balls during World War II, and most krewes did not hold balls in the years following hurricanes Camille and Katrina. The heart of Mardi Gras is merriment and revelry with friends and family, so Harris suggests keeping the spirit alive by sharing a king cake and a toast with friends. “Like the Mississippi Gulf Coast, Mardi Gras always comes back bigger and better than before,” Harris says. “Mardi Gras 2022 is guaranteed to be a memorable season!” Moore agrees and emphasizes that no matter what, the good times will always roll on the Coast. “Will Mardi Gras feel the same without all the events and parades? No,” she acknowledges. “But we are confident in our Gulf Coast residents that it will be evident one way or another through decorations, Zoom parties or even neighborhood outdoor events throughout the Lenten season! It’s just how we ‘roll!’”

INTRODUCING THE

COAST'S

Best Small Businesses SPONSORED BY MISSISSIPPI POWER CO.

Great small businesses have several things in common: personal attention and superior customer service, high-quality products and services, a positive impact in the surrounding community, an attitude of service and a knowledgeable team. Based on these criteria, we asked you to nominate your favorite local companies — and we received nearly 3,000 votes. Here are your choices for the Coast’s best small businesses:

OVERALL WINNER:

THE SCRATCH KITCHEN Food truck delights diners with fresh, unique cuisine BY JENNIFER GENTILE

On their summer road trip last year, during a stop in Denver, Brittany Cruso Alexander and her husband fell in love with food trucks. Brittany remembers sitting in a brewery, watching throngs of diners enjoy food from the trucks parked outside, when she had a revelation. “I can only remember thinking how great this would be back home,” the Biloxi native recalls. “Before we left, my mind was made up; I could do this. I WOULD do this!”

66

December 2020

By the time she’d reached the next state, Brittany had even picked a name for her business: The Scratch Kitchen. Her grandmother, who drew people to her table with homemade fare, was her inspiration. “With everything I’ve ever learned from her suddenly running through the mind, I somehow gained a sense of faith that I was no longer just talking — but planning The Scratch Kitchen in my mind from that very moment,” Brittany recalls. Since opening on May 21, the Ocean Springs-based food truck has earned rave reviews for its fresh, creative cuisine. With 210 votes, The Scratch Kitchen was chosen the Best Small Business in South Mississippi by Gulf Coast Woman readers. Neither Brittany nor her husband, Billy Alexander Jr., has formal culinary training, but both have an affinity for people and great food. Billy’s experience in transportation management and food service has benefitted the business greatly,

‘Come with your taste buds ready!’ Brittany says, while her background in public health and marketing ensures everything is done to high standards. “We are TSK,” she says, “and when people come to the truck and see us, they know they’re getting our all!” The food truck’s menu changes often, Brittany says, and she advises customers to “come with your taste buds ready.” Some fan favorites include loaded street corn, bang bang shrimp, smashed potatoes, loaded nachos and fruit cocktails. For the colder weather, homemade stews, soups and chilis will be added, Brittany says — with peaches and cream fruit nachos for dessert. Patrons can savor their meals in Food Truck Square, a revamped outdoor dining area that has been furnished with picnic tables, new pavement, lighting, and umbrellas for shade. “The vibe in downtown Ocean Springs can’t be found anywhere else on the Coast,” Brittany says. “The people have welcomed us into their city with open arms.” She estimates that on an average day, The Scratch Kitchen serves 300 items to customers looking for delicious food and good vibes. One notable visitor was Professional Eater Randy Santel, who devoured a seven-pound heavenly fruit nacho plate in just over 15 minutes — earning a spot on the TSK Wall of Fame. “We never imagined that our food would be bringing so many people together,” Brittany says. “There may be a small wait, but it will definitely be worth it!”

WHAT YOU C AN LE ARN FROM

Legacy Businesses Entrepreneurship always involves risk. According to the U.S. Bureau of Labor Statistics, only 25 percent of new businesses survive for 15 years or more. So, when a company has endured for decades, what’s their secret? We asked the leaders of some of the Coast’s most well-respected, longest-operating businesses what it takes to go the distance. Here’s what the women at the helm had to say: THE AD GROUP - BILOXI

Laura Hasty, president; Robin Stephens Lund, vice president, senior art director

According to Hasty and Lund, The Ad Group is a team of creative, hard-working and fun-loving individuals who all have one thing in common — a love of advertising. Their team expresses this passion, they add, through innovative design, strategic planning, media placement that ensures maximum exposure, research and production — all coming together to help clients reach their advertising goals. Hasty and Lund say the team also takes tremendous pride in saving their clients’ money so they can put it back into their advertising The Ad Group celebrated its 25th anniversary this year; Hasty and Lund founded the business and opened their doors on Jan. 16, 1995. To what do you attribute your business’s longevity and success?: We have a reputation of producing great creative (material) to fit our clients’ needs while working at our clients’

pace. We’re always available to our clients. We are not just a 9-to-5 business. What advice would you give other women for building a legacy business?: Work hard seven days a week and ALWAYS be honest with your clients. If you mess up, fess up, own it and make it right.

D. BATIA INTERIORS LLC Debbie Batia, owner

This Biloxi-based firm specializes in residential and commercial interior design and offers over 200 lines of furnishings, accessories, rugs, lighting and gift items. The business, founded in 1947 as Merchiston Hall Galleries, has been owned and managed by members of the Crapo Family since 1957 — starting with Leo K. Crapo, who bought the store and business from the Napier Family. Debbie Batia took over the business completely after her mother, Dottie Crapo, retired in 2005. Many of Batia’s closest relatives worked in the business at one time, including her

father; her mother; her sister, Pam Bozeman; her brother, Greg Crapo; and her aunt and uncle. “I grew up in the business,” Batia says, “and have been working here full time since January of 1977.” To what do you attribute your business’s longevity and success?: (I attribute it to) our reputation for quality, selection and good service — which has always been the most important factor in making our business successful and enduring through all of the recessions, the BP oil spill, hurricanes, etc. We just keep doing our best for our clients and the local community, and they continue to support us! What advice would you give other women for building a legacy business?: You have to understand that your business will always be a major part of your life and your family’s lives. You have to believe in what your business does, and the main thing is you have to love what you do, or it will not be successful. I have always lived and breathed my passion for fine furnishings and interiors, and I can’t imagine living without this business!

CORSO INC.

Liz Corso Joachim, president

Corso Inc. is a 97-year-old family wholesale and vending business located in downtown Biloxi. Frank P. Corso started the business in 1924 by selling candy on a bicycle to students after they were dismissed from school. The business grew to supply every item found in a convenience store except liquor. Corso’s daughter, Liz, is running the company with her three children, who have retired from other businesses in the community. Todd Joachim is the chief financial officer; Elisa Radich is the vending manager, and John Joachim is the general manager who oversees the buying of products and distributing the products to customers. To what do you attribute your business’s longevity and success?: We contribute to the loyalty of our customers, and

our service to them has kept the business operating for 97 years. What advice would you give other women for building a legacy business?: Do not be afraid to inherit a family business and keep it going. We are capable of handling many obstacles that are handed to us.

W.P. SHELTON JEWELERS

Family-owned for 75 years, William Paul (W.P.) Shelton established his jewelry business in 1945 on Howard Avenue in Biloxi after learning how to repair airplane instrument panels during World War II. In 1972, he relocated to Highway 90 in Ocean Springs, and after retiring in 1986, he sold the company to his daughter and son-in-law, Cathy and Terry Reed. Today, the family tradition continues and includes Shelton’s granddaughter, Dianne Murray, a knowledgeable sales staff, two expert bench jewelers and an experienced appraiser. According to Reed and Murray, high quality, trust and experience are the foundation of the business. Murray has said the company’s multi-generational legacy “is something we are very proud of.” To what do you attribute your business’s longevity and success?: Mainly trust — we’re dealing with people’s valuables, and people trust and value our opinions. And obviously, (there’s) the quality of our products. We will work with anyone’s budget, and we sell a quality product even if it’s a minimal budget. What advice would you give other women for building a legacy business?: Be honest with your customers; be open with your customers. You’ve got to put in the hours also. You don’t just start a business and run with it. You’ve got to build your clientele and put in the hours. It can be trying, but it’s worth it.

Want to avoid the flu? Get the shot No one likes being sick. With its typical symptoms of fever, chills, nausea, body aches, runny nose and fatigue, influenza makes most sufferers snuggle under the covers and hope the world survives without them. Antibiotics won’t help, so BY DR. PHILIP L. those infected must rely on over-theLEVIN counter medications like acetaminophen, ibuprofen and cough syrup. The one drug approved for use, Tamiflu (oseltamivir), if taken within 48 hours of symptoms, reduces the intensity of symptoms and may shorten their duration. According to the CDC, influenza caused the deaths of 34,200 Americans in 2019, statistically 0.1 percent of those who contracted it. While this pales in comparison to the coronavirus death rate, which is probably about 30 times that, prevention definitely is in everyone’s best interest. In this case, that means getting the flu shot. Anyone can get the flu. Those at higher risk of having a serious course include infants, those over 65, pregnant women and those with weakened immune systems due to conditions like heart disease, cancer, diabetes or due to taking suppressants such as steroids. Preventing the illness with the vaccine dramatically reduces the risk of catching influenza, or if the flu is contracted, the vaccine usually reduces the intensity of symptoms. Unlike some vaccines that last a lifetime, such as those against measles or polio, the flu vaccine must be taken every year. Influenza viruses mutate frequently, creating new “novel” varieties with previously unseen configurations. So even if you were vaccinated last year, it’s necessary to do it again. There are two types of influenza vaccines — a live, attenuated influenza vaccine, and one called a recombinant influenza vaccine (the latter is for those with egg allergies). The most commonly available vaccine offers protection against two A strains and two B strains, based on what the developers predict might be the most likely culprits from the hundreds of different A and B strains out there. Sometimes, they’re right on target, and the vaccine offers great protection. Other times, not so much, and the vaccine is less effective. Although there’s variety in the available vaccines, there’s little difference in their protective qualities. Children aged 6 months to 8 years may need two doses of vaccine while everyone else only needs one. It’s worth mentioning that for those who hate needles, there’s now a nasal spray that’s as effective as the shot. After the vaccine is administered, it takes about two weeks for the body to develop protection. Nothing’s completely safe. Because the vaccine consists of a modified virus, there’s a low risk of actually getting the flu from the shot. Even more rarely, the vaccine sometimes causes a strange neurological problem called Guillain Barré disease. Overall, however, the complications and suffering associated with catching the flu greatly outweigh the risks of taking the vaccine. Now let’s bust a few myths. Influenza vaccines do not cause autism. While some multiple-dose vaccine supplies use a miniscule amount of a mercury compound as a preservative, there is no toxic risk associated with its use, nor from any of the other preservatives. Also, the influenza and COVID viruses are

'Overall, however, the complications and suffering associated with catching the flu greatly outweigh the risks of taking the vaccine.' totally different, so taking the flu shot won’t increase or decrease a person’s susceptibility or reaction to COVID. Flu shots are available without a prescription and offered in many pharmacies, workplaces and walk-in clinics. For most people, these are excellent options. However, if you’re having your young child vaccinated, have experienced problems with flu shots in the past, are over 65 or have other serious illnesses, it’s best to check with your doctor beforehand. TRANSFORMATION STORY

BEFORE MY TRANSFORMATION

As an obese adult, I had several weight-generated diagnoses that came with accompanying medications: diabetes, high blood pressure and high cholesterol. I’d also had one round of knee injections. When the knee pain started interfering with my work at the hospital, I became acutely aware that something needed to change.

MY GOAL

My first goal was to see whether I could reduce the dosage of prescription medication I was taking, as well as ease some of my knee pain. I wanted to come out from under a body mass index of 40, which gave me an “obese” classification for medical and insurance purposes. It was a label I was sick of seeing.

BEFORE

WHAT I DID

I sought out a program that had a medical director, a registered dietitian and maintenance. I deemed these the three attributes of a sustainable program. I was looking for a way to lose weight and keep it off, and I wanted to see the statistics for sustained success. At age 65, I needed this to be the “last stop" on my weightloss journey. I also was looking for a program that didn’t have exercise at the forefront due to my knee issues. I found a health coach and a program that met all the criteria I sought. Ten different programs were available, one of which did not require exercise. Bingo! There was no contract to sign, so I told the health coach I would try this for one month to see if it was what I was looking for. I was on a program for one week and lost 4.4 lbs. This was the simplest thing I had ever done. I called my health coach to ask whether I could become a coach although I was not at my goal weight.

HOW IT WORKED

The program has four components: coaching, community, education and nutrition. I eat five small meals and one “leanand-green” meal each day. I was not hungry, and my energy level was unbelievable. I felt so good — and this was only the first week.

90

December 2020

AFTER THE MOST DIFFICULT PART

Through the education provided as part of my program, I’ve had to face some hard truths about myself to grow past some of the mindsets I had about food. I’ve learned that fighting for my health is not a "won-and-done" process, but rather a lifelong journey that I must continue each day.

HOW I FEEL ABOUT MYSELF TODAY

My energy level is better than good; it is absolutely wonderful. I am so much more comfortable in my own skin. You could say that I am the better version of myself. Physically, I’m 91 pounds lighter. I am off all medication and pain free with no more knee injections. Mentally, I’m in a much better place. I take pictures with family and friends, and there is no more retreating to the back row or hiding behind the kids. There is no physical activity I shy away from; I can do anything I desire to do. Now that is true freedom!

MY ADVICE TO OTHERS

If you are thinking about losing weight and getting healthy, act on that thought. I have not once coached a client that said, "I wish I had waited to lose weight and get healthy."

ONE OF THE LUCKIEST THINGS THAT HAS HAPPENED TO ME ENCOMPASS HEALTH SET DANNY CANTRELL ON PATH TO RECOVERY FROM COVID-19 Upon arriving at Memorial Hospital in July with a 103-degree fever, the last thing Danny Cantrell remembers is seeing the emergency room sign. “For the next four to five weeks, I have no memory,” says the Pass Christian resident and former electrician, who contracted COVID-19. His ordeal started with a headache, and within days, his high fever became a medical emergency. Cantrell was placed on a ventilator, and during the first weeks, he suffered nightmares that continue to haunt him. However, he says he also received a message of hope from his mother and his late wife. “They told me it was not my time,” Cantrell says, “and that I had to go back and try to recover as soon as I can.” When he awoke, he could not talk, walk or use his hands to feed himself. However, he improved enough to be moved to a rehabilitation facility. The father of seven and grandfather of 10 remained at Encompass Health Rehabilitation Hospital in Gulfport for 19 days. A partner of Memorial Hospital, Encompass Health specializes in helping patients like Cantrell regain their independence after a life-changing illness or injury, such as stroke, hip fracture and other neurological and orthopedic conditions. The inpatient hospital tailors a care plan to each patient’s needs and uses advanced technology and an interdisciplinary team approach to reach recovery goals.

Although his first days of rehabilitation were difficult, given his lack of ability to care for himself and perform basic functions, Cantrell has nothing but praise for the Encompass Health staff. “The people who worked there had the patience of a saint,” Cantrell says. “They never lost their temper, even when I messed up or turned over my drink. They would always say ‘That’s OK’ and clean it up.” The Encompass Health therapists, he adds, were “the best of the best.” “No matter what, they always helped me and encouraged me to do better,” Cantrell says. “They never said a discouraging thing to me. (They only said) things to build me up.” Today, Cantrell is working to get stronger physically by doing pushups, sit-ups and lifting weights. He says he is closer than ever to God, as well as his family — who helped him without expecting anything in return. Life is mostly back to normal, according to Cantrell, which would not be possible without Encompass Health. He would recommend the hospital to anyone in need of rehabilitation. “Being there was one of the luckiest things that has happened to me,” he says. DO YOU HAVE A THYROID PROBLEM? Here's how to tell and what you can do Feeling tired, gaining or losing weight inexplicably or experiencing BY DR. MARK BORCHELT muscle weakness? There may be something wrong with your thyroid. The thyroid gland is a butterfly-shaped endocrine gland in the lower front of the neck. It makes thyroid hormone and secretes it into the bloodstream, where it is carried to all tissues of the body. Thyroid hormone is necessary for life and helps keep the body warm, in addition to many other functions. Other organs need it to work properly. If the thyroid starts to fail, symptoms often gradually appear, thus they are sometimes hard to recognize — especially early on. Other symptoms that many indicate something may be wrong with your thyroid include the development of increased sensitivity to cold temperatures, hoarseness of the voice, constipation, dry skin and/or depression. Prolonged signs should trigger an evaluation for hypothyroidism. Hashimoto’s disease, otherwise known as lymphocytic thyroiditis, is the most common cause of an underactive thyroid (hypothyroidism) in the United States. It is an autoimmune disease, meaning the body’s own immune system attacks the thyroid, causing it to eventually fail to make thyroid hormone. The tendency to develop an autoimmune disease is inherited, but something (perhaps a virus) activates the genes that cause the disease. As with other autoimmune diseases, Hashimoto’s disease is six to eight times more common in women than in men. Typically, it occurs in middle-aged women, but it can occur in children and in men, too. Often there is a family history of thyroid disease or other autoimmune disease. Other autoimmune diseases include pernicious anemia, type 1 diabetes, adrenal insufficiency, premature ovarian failure/ menopause, vitiligo and others. There are no symptoms unique to Hashimoto’s disease. Commonly, an enlargement of the thyroid gland, sometimes referred to as a goiter, will be noted. The diagnosis usually is made with blood samples sent to the lab. A pituitary hormone known as TSH (thyroid-stimulating hormone) usually will be elevated, and the thyroid hormone (free T4) will be low. There is really no need to check a free T3 level (another thyroid hormone usually best for evaluating an overactive thyroid). Similarly, a reverse T3 level is not helpful. A thyroid peroxidase level (TPO) is a diagnostic of Hashimoto’s disease. Thyroid hormone replacement is the only treatment for Hashimoto's disease, but it is not always necessary. There are several different types of thyroid hormone replacement therapies available, and your endocrinologist can help

94

you choose what is best for you. The condition also can be monitored with blood work, including a Thyroid Stimulating Hormone (TSH). This should be done six weeks after starting thyroid hormone or after each dose adjustment. In addition, surgery is not necessary for Hashimoto's disease. Your thyroid is a vital hormone gland and plays a major role in your metabolism. Do not hesitate to take control of your health and partner with your doctor so you can feel better faster. Mark D. Borchelt is a Memorial Physician Clinic endocrinologist. Call (228) 867-5000 for an appointment or visit WeAreMemorial.com for a physician directory.

ELEVATED STANDARDS at Bleu Med Spa TIFFANY BURGESS has brought cutting-edge technology and superior standards of European med spas to the Gulfport area with the opening of Bleu Med Spa. A truly organic and full-luxury medical spa, the Bleu Med Spa Franchise separates itself from others by offering only products that adhere to strict European standards. Explains Tiffany, “European regulation is extremely rigorous, and we exceed even their criteria by offering biodynamic skincare which is higher-grade than organic to ensure natural and immediate results.” Tiffany is most excited about Fibroblast non-surgical skin tightening. “Fibroblast is new in North America but has proven extremely successful and popular across Europe over the last several years. We’re the only seasoned business offering these services across the Gulf South Region, so clients in the know across the USA seek us out and come from all over.” Tiffany explains that Fibroblast Skin Tightening is “soft surgery” meaning it delivers results similar to surgery but with minimal downtime and no scalpel, stitches or bandages. “The results are immediate and permanent. It can take the place of Botox and fillers for some, there is no anesthesia, and it’s much lower-risk and more affordable than actual surgery. Our clients absolutely love it and have immediate and permanent results.”

The procedure eliminates excess skin using a handheld device that creates a tiny arc. When the arc touches the skin, it causes sublimation, eliminating excess skin and leaving the surrounding area untouched. A tiny carbon dot is left behind which sheds in about four to seven days. As healing activates collagen production, skin becomes firm and tight. More than one treatment can be done for better results, but Tiffany says it’s uncommon to require more than one to two treatments in the same area. Along with treating the face, Bleu’s certified and licensed practitioners can perform breast lifts and tummy makeovers and even tighten knees and biceps. Although any body area can be treated, Tiffany says that treating the face is most popular. “The thinnest skin is around the eyes, so treating those areas gives the most impactful results. Under the eye usually requires only one treatment and can help someone look 10 to 15 years younger. There are some contraindications and we’re candid about that on our website. We want our clients to be educated and have the best possible experience at a great value.” For a full menu of services, booking and scheduling availability visit bleubeautyco.com

Hearts Unimaginable. The thought of losing a child is just that for many parents. However, for thousands of mothers each year, the death of a baby becomes a reality. Mississippi has one of the highest infant mortality rates in the nation with nearly 9 infant deaths for every 1,000 born. It is a life-event for parents that could take a lifetime to overcome. The Birthplace at Memorial staff delivers babies every day, and the staff shares in the joy of parents welcoming new additions to their families. Nonetheless, our nursing and social services teams must be prepared when parents experience a loss, whether it is a miscarriage, a stillbirth, or an infant death. Once a month, Memorial hosts Healing Hearts, a bereavement support group maintained by chaplains, Maternal Child Health Nurses and grief counselors who understand the mental and emotional toll loss takes on parents. They want to assist in easing the parent’s pain by hosting a place that is safe to share experiences.

HEALING HEARTS GRIEF COUNSELOR, KRISTEN SCHMITZ, EXPERIENCED THE LOSS OF HER BABY AND SHARES WHY SHE SEEKS TO HELP OTHERS: When I lost my son, I lost more than just my son. I lost my friends, closeness with my husband, security in my faith, and I lost so much of myself. I needed someone to listen to me cry, ramble and someone that understood what it felt like to leave the hospital without your baby. I remember going to work one day, and it was like any normal day. I came home and did my nightly routine. I was 39 weeks pregnant with my second child. Later that evening, I realized I did not and had not felt my son moving for some time. After many calls to my mom, to the nurse and the doctor on-call, my husband and I headed to the hospital. After an examination, the doctor on-call told us, “I don’t hear or see a heartbeat on the ultrasound.” You never expect to hear those words, and never as abruptly as the doctor told us. We were in shock. We were

My C-section was planned in 6 days. I wanted to know what happened. How did this happen? Our personal doctor soon arrived and decided he would do a C-section and he would determine the cause of my son’s death. It was a cord accident. How did I not know something was wrong? And now, how do I move forward knowing there was nothing I could have done; yet, feeling so guilty. I had so many questions and emotions. I needed help. My friends did not know what to say so they said nothing. My husband did not know how to help me as he was grieving himself. I was so angry, lost and felt so alone. My friends and I searched, but we found no resources or support groups for families after losing a child. I knew then I needed to try to help. It took time, but I have been able to share my story and be there for families that experienced the same kind of event. I was so thrilled when I was asked to join the Healing Hearts Support Group. Moms need moms. Families need families. Anyone can sympathize for families that have lost a child, but only if you have walked that journey are you able to understand and can empathize with them.

Be merry this season without blowing your goals Fast-forward a few weeks — it’s Jan. 1, and you’re lying on the couch surrounded by a few empty champagne bottles, cookie tins and Happy New Year hats. You’re feeling bloated, defeated and angry with yourself BY KAROL BRANDT for ditching your health and fitness priorities for a holiday-induced bender that destroyed all your hard work in the gym and the kitchen. You already feel defeated, and it’s only the first day of the year. Oh yes, Jan. 1 is fast approaching — the moment when we will pay for all the heavy meals, late nights, holiday parties, Netflix binges and over-celebration (goodbye, 2020!). But you don’t have to board the struggle bus this time. You can enjoy the holidays, spend quality time with family and friends and indulge in some delicious foods without dreading the aftermath. Instead of engaging in the same pattern of self-destructive behavior, why not do specific things differently this year? If you go into the holiday season with a resolution, a written intention for moderation, thoughtful planning and realistic expectations, you can and will enjoy the festivities without blowing your goals. Here are some helpful tips for staying on track:

STAY HYDRATED

We often confuse thirst for hunger and go for the hors d’oeuvre platter when what we really need is a tall drink of water. If you’re still hungry after hydrating, go for the healthiest snack available — fruit, veggies or protein. Try to avoid black hole treats that pile on the calories and leave you with no selfcontrol. For me, that’s sweets — oh, the sweets! If you are drinking, space out your adult beverages and have a glass of water in between.

BUILD A BALANCED PLATE; EAT IT SLOWLY AND MINDFULLY

Let’s face it: Most of us only need one plate of food. Whether

100

December 2020

a family member is pushing seconds or it’s just too tasty to stop eating, going back for more is always unnecessary. Get yourself one plate, and make sure 50 percent of it is filled with veggies and fruit. Add a big serving of protein and a moderate amount of starches. Then, mindfully enjoy the food. Taste it. Chew it. Experience it. Put down your cell phone and turn off the TV. Try not to graze, and find a spot to stop, sit and eat. Practice being present and savoring the moment. Mindful eating really works.

BEFORE YOU GO, EAT A WELL-BALANCED SNACK If you want to avoid overeating, don’t show up to the party hungry. Make sure you have eaten a healthy snack, maybe a smoothie or protein bar, beforehand.

GET MOVING

It’s the day before your holiday work gathering; set the alarm, get up earlier than normal and move. Yes, exercise. Get a great workout in before you head to the calorie carnival. I log my calories in My Fitness Pal so I know how many extra I’ve worked off, letting me enjoy that dessert with no guilt.

WRITE IT DOWN

There’s something magical about putting a plan in writing versus just keeping it in your head. Write it, see it, say it — and will it into existence. Studies show that people who write down their game plan for enjoying the holidays while staying true to their fitness intentions almost always succeed. I use My Fitness Pal, where I can log all my food via my phone (it’s free!), or a sticky note or memo in your phone is fine. Try implementing these tips to keep you on your healthy journey. I wish you a very healthy, happy and blessed holiday season.

More than just memorable deliveries... FOR OVER 20 YEARS WE HAVE HAD THE PRIVILEGE OF WELCOMING SO MANY BEAUTIFUL BUNDLES INTO THE WORLD. WE BELIEVE EVERY BIRTH IS UNIQUE AND SPECIAL!

WHAT TO DO: Falls are very common among the elderly. Many falls cause only minor injuries, but they are scary and can cause older adults to restrict their activities. Most falls in older adults are a result of a combination of underlying risk factors or health problems. Insufficient strength or balance is usually one of the problems — which can be addressed with the right exercises. But it’s good to check for other factors, such as medication side-effects or even a new illness. Don’t assume the fall is a result of frailty.

WHETHER YOU NEED PRE-CONCEPTUAL COUNSELING, INFERTILITY TREATMENT, ROUTINE PREGNANCY CARE, OR HIGH RISK CARE...

DOMESTIC VIOLENCE AND COVID 19

Trapped with your abuser? Here's what to do The COVID-19 crisis has been a stressful time for us all, but for those living with domestic violence, quarantine BY RENE' DAVIS at home can feel like being caught in a very dangerous trap. If you’re living with abuse in the midst of the pandemic, here are some things you can do to maximize your safety:

PLAN AND STAY PREPARED

Think ahead to what you'd do if things escalated and you had to leave immediately. Where would you go first? How would you get there? Hide an extra car key, house key, change of clothes and shoes and a bit of money or credit card somewhere your abuser won't find them. You may want to leave these items with a family member, neighbor or trusted friend. If you can, also stash copies of your ID, any prescriptions, insurance cards and other vital papers. Also, keep your cell phone charged. Add the Gulf Coast Center for Nonviolence crisis line (800-800-1396) to your contacts under a fictitious name that won't raise suspicions. Emergency shelter is available if you don’t have another safe space to go where you can’t be found. Think about the physical layout of your home. Are there any guns or other weapons in the house? Where are they? Where are the exits? Does your home have more than one floor? As much as you can, try not to get trapped alone with your abuser in a vehicle or in a room without access to a safe exit. Mentally rehearse what you'd do if you needed to escape; you won't be able to think clearly to make these decisions once you’re in danger.

PACIFY AND PLACATE

Staying safe may mean taking care to avoid escalating any arguments with your abuser. This may mean letting them rant without arguing or defending yourself verbally. It may mean letting them believe whatever they want about you without correcting them. It may mean outwardly smiling when you'd rather scream. This isn't fair; it's very difficult, and it absolutely does NOT mean that you deserve abuse or are causing it. Abuse is never the victim's fault, but if keeps you safe, just try to pacify. Practice self-care to cope with the stress. Meditate, take a walk, take a hot bath, listen to music, garden or read books — whatever helps you to relax and recharge.

TRY TO MAINTAIN BRIDGES TO SAFETY

One effect of domestic violence is that victims often become

108

December 2020

socially isolated. Quarantined at home, you may feel as if you've been cut off completely from the outside world. If you can, try to remain in contact with a few people you trust. Ask trusted friends and family to check in on you regularly in case you lose access to your phone or computer. Discuss code words with them to signal that you need help. For example: "If I ever ask you about 'Susan,' that's the code word to call 911." If you have children and they’re old enough to understand, discuss the code word with them as well, but only if you can be certain they won’t share this information with your abuser.

IF YOU MUST ESCAPE

If you make the decision to leave, never tell your abuser where you’re going. Get to safety, and then stay there. Do not take calls from your abuser or get pulled into a text conversation. Don’t agree to meet “for the sake of the children.” The most dangerous time for victims of abuse is the first few days after leaving, so don’t give your abuser any opportunity to be near you. If you absolutely must return to your home, contact police to assist you with an escort. Stay safe and reach out to the Gulf Coast Center for Nonviolence for shelter, counseling, legal services, case management and housing assistance.

Rene' Davis is communications manager for the Gulf Coast Center for Nonviolence. Reach her at rdavis@gccfn.org or (228) 436-3809.

COASTAL FAMILY HEALTH ANNOUNCES PARTNERSHIP WITH NIMMA

Coastal Family Health Center has joined forces with the National Institute for Medical Assistant Advancement — an educational institution created to transform the way medical assistants are educated, trained, and prepared for practice in primary care and other health care settings. Founded by two community health centers, NIMAA is designed to provide educational opportunities in the communities health centers serve and to address a critical workforce shortage. NIMAA’s programming provides hands-on education in externship clinics like Coastal Family Health Center. This is the first year Coastal will serve as an externship organization. This March, Coastal Family Health Center will host five students with NIMAA. According to the U.S. Bureau of Labor Statistics, employment of medical assistants is expected to grow 23 percent from 2018-2028, much faster than the average for all occupations. “Partnering with NIMMA in the medical assistant program is forward thinking in developing highly trained health care workers, giving them the opportunity for employment following graduation,” says Karen Clarke, director of Nursing for Coastal Family Health Center. Applications for the March cohort are open through Jan. 31. To learn more or submit an application, visit www. nimaa.org.

home & family

holiday-break learning activities to do with your child

BY DR. RAYMOND J. HUNTINGTON

For most families, holiday break is symbolic — you’ve reached the midway point of the school year, and it’s time for a breather. However, that doesn’t mean your child should spend the next two weeks scrolling social media. Here are eight holiday activities for kids you can try over the break that will boost your child’s brain power:

1. READING

5. COLLEGE RESEARCH

If you have a high school student, holiday break is a great time to do some college research and/or preparation. That might include browsing college websites to start gathering information, reading up on financial aid or fine-tuning that admissions essay if you have a senior who is working on applications.

6. COOKING

Don’t force your child to crack those textbooks, but do encourage him or her to choose a book (or several) to enjoy over break. Head to the library for an afternoon at the start of break to stock up. Consider reading something together to make it a fun family activity.

Many families do a lot of entertaining and hosting over the holidays, which means lots of food. And guess what? Cooking involves practical math skills such as measuring and shopping, as well as time management skills for the planning and preparation. Hand your child a cookbook and put him or her in charge of your holiday menu.

2. CLASSES FOR FUN

7. FAMILY HISTORY DOCUMENTATION

Look around, and you’ll discover many fun holiday learning activities and classes for children over break. Your nearby recreation center, library or bookstore are good places to look for winter break classes and workshops on things like cooking, holiday crafts, writing, art or even sports.

3. MUSEUM HOPPING

Art galleries, history museums, and nature and science museums make ideal day trips for children of all ages. Check out those in your town for any special exhibits for the holidays. Holiday break is a chance to explore some of those lesser-known museums too, like a heritage museum or sports museum.

4. EDUCATIONAL MOVIES/TV

Who doesn’t love curling up on the couch around the holidays to enjoy some entertainment on screen? When you visit the library, look for interesting documentaries or based-on-trueevents movies that might pique your child’s interest. Perhaps there’s a thought-provoking TV series (think science, animal and history channels) that your family could watch together.

Your child could devote some time to creating a cherished book of family history. Have your child call or visit family members to ask about their childhoods or favorite holiday memories.

8. SCIENCE PROJECTS

What is your child curious about? What’s going on around you? Have your child come up with a few things to track or measure over break (e.g. snow accumulation or hourly temperature). Have him or her research easy science experiments online that he or she can do with household materials and try a few a day. Holiday break is the perfect chance for your child to explore something new and relish learning for the fun of it. Get creative. There are all kinds of ways for your child to keep her mind engaged over break while having fun at the same time. Huntington is co-founder and chairman of Huntington Learning Center. The Gulfport location is at 8950 Lorraine Road, Suite E, Gulfport, and can be contacted at (228) 832-1226. Visit huntingtonhelps.com/center/Gulfport to learn more.

The Mississippi Aquarium

NEW THINGS TO DO IN SOUTH MISSISSIPPI Even the huge speed bump that was 2020 didn’t break the Coast’s momentum. Projects advanced. Construction continued. Businesses opened. Attractions launched or expanded. Looking for somewhere new to eat or play — whether for a date night, girls’ night or family outing? We all could use a change of scenery post-lockdown, and these local hotspots are ready for your visit.

the enjoyment of model trains; it is fun for all ages!” The museum is free, but donations of $5 per adult and $2 per child to help offset costs are recommended. The annual Christmas light show, featuring trains, Santa and over a million lights, starts the day after Thanksgiving. Watch the museum’s Facebook page and website for current information.

RAILROAD MUSEUM EXPANSION

HOTEL LEGENDS

With the new South Station, The Mississippi Coast Model Railroad Museum in Gulfport has added over 22,000 square feet of model train displays to include one of the state’s largest O-gauge displays that was featured in Classic Toy Trains Magazine. Guests can also check out the restored Orange Grove Hobby Shop Mountain display, along with a large prewar tinplate layout and American Flyer S-gauge layout. The expansion has been in the works for over a year, with plans for the museum to be open each weekend long term. “This is a huge tourism draw, as there are model train enthusiasts worldwide, as shown by our Trip Advisor Award placing our museum in the top 10 percent worldwide,” says Marketing Director Katherine Sutton. “Don’t underestimate

A former retirement housing complex devastated by Hurricane Katrina has been reborn as Biloxi’s newest hotspot. The 132-room full-service hotel is home to the Sapphire Supper Club, modeled after the popular supper clubs of the 1930s and 40s. Promising a hip dining experience with exceptional attention to detail, the restaurant boasts a menu of fresh seafood, steaks and much more. Guests are immersed in old Hollywood glamour, as photos of timeless stars like Marilyn Monroe, Audrey Hepburn and Roger Moore are displayed throughout the property. The sapphire-colored hotel may celebrate the past, but it’s also thoroughly modern — offering an exercise room, a luxury pool area and a host of amenities in each room. “Whatever you do, don’t forget to take in the evening views of our dancing fountain, choreographed to songs like

Frank Sinatra’s ‘Luck Be A Lady’ and Dean Martin’s ‘Ain’t That a Kick in the Head,’” advises Tessy Lambert, director of public relations. “With top-tier service and a nostalgic quality like no other, Hotel Legends will undoubtedly leave a wonderful memory with every guest.”

THE MISSISSIPPI AVIATION HERITAGE MUSEUM

Adjacent to the Gulfport-Biloxi International Airport, the John C. Robinson Mississippi Aviation Heritage Museum is housed in a 52,000 squarefoot building and features life-size exhibits honoring many of Mississippi’s iconic aviators, including its namesake, John C. Robinson. The museum features plenty of display halls to explore, including a main aircraft hall, a Mississippi bases gallery, a control tower, a parachute exhibit, a flight simulator exhibit, a NASA and rocket exhibit, an aviation art exhibit, a Hurricane Hunters exhibit, a Tuskegee Airmen exhibit and much more. On Oct. 3, “we had a fabulous ribbon cutting with around 200 people present,” says project manager Francisco Gonzalez. “The mayor spoke, and we had a flyby show with eight antique aircraft. The comments are great — all positive.”

THE ORCHID ROOM

In September, the Scarlet Pearl Casino Resort unveiled its sumptuous high-limit room — in which every detail conveys over-the-top luxury. The 5,800-square-foot space — limited to members of Pearl Rewards, Scarlet Pearl’s loyalty program, features eight blackjack and mini-baccarat table games, 53 slot and video poker machines and its own dedicated cashier and player services counter. Gaming pods are equipped with amenities like personal 24-inch flatscreen TVs, charging stations, food trays and storage compartments. Feeling parched while you play? Specially selected staff will serve you cocktails like blackberry margaritas and Orchid Room cosmos. Players also can unwind with slippers, shoulder massagers and cashmere shawls. So far, says Ben Koff, president of marketing, the room has received “nothing but rave reviews” — even from competitors. “Everybody loves it because it’s just such a different gaming experience,” Koff adds.

THE MISSISSIPPI AQUARIUM

After being under construction for almost two years, The Mississippi Aquarium opened on Aug. 29 — and more than 4,000 people came out to celebrate the opening weekend. The 5.8-acre campus in Gulfport features over 80,000

square feet of indoor and outdoor exhibits, including a crocodilian habitat, an aviary, an upper and lower river, a three-story Aquatic Wonders building, a river otter habitat, a dolphin habitat and more. Visitors can spot turtles in the river, touch hermit crabs and stingrays and learn all about Mississippi’s aquatic animals and resources. An engaging design means that the aquarium makes the most of every drop of its 1 million gallons of fresh and salt water. By all measures, the attraction is poised to be a regional — and even national — draw. “The Aquarium has received an overwhelmingly positive welcome from the community,” says Meredith Horn, vice president of guest experience and education. “We continue to roll out programs like Aquarium in Motion. This program allows the Aquarium team to travel throughout the state to visit and educate students about the importance of our three pillars; education, conservation and community. We are excited to share the story of the Aquarium for years to come.”

GREAT INDOORS We all know play is so important for kids — not only for fun, but also for learning, development and socialization. It builds curiosity, challenges perspectives and sets your child up for a lifetime of learning. As a family, we try to get outside and enjoy where we live as much as possible. I love to see my kids playing in nature, but when the weather isn’t ideal, or their interest in at-home activities is dwindling, we take them to an indoor play area. It’s so fun to see them get excited about a change in setting, about different toys or games, and watch their little neurons fire with excitement navigating the newness. The Coast has so much to offer in terms of indoor play areas. I recommend calling or checking websites before planning a trip to verify hours and any COVID-19 restrictions.

What to ask yourself before you organize If you look around your home and decide the time has come to tidy up, answering these crucial questions will set you on the path to success.

WHY TIDY NOW?

Perhaps clutter is causing you physical stress, or you avoid having guests because the chaos embarrasses you. You might be downsizing, prepping for a move BY HEATHER YOUNG or preparing for a new addition to the family. Whatever the reason, identifying your specific goal in tidying up will bring meaning, purpose and motivation as you proceed.

HOW MUCH TIME DO YOU HAVE?

Are you willing and able to devote half a day, a week, a month or even several months to your project? In being realistic about your schedule, you can see if your decluttering and organizing aspirations line up with your availability. Pro tip: Schedule twice (yes, twice!) the time you think you will need to achieve your tidying goals. If you finish early, all the better.

WHICH METHOD WILL YOU USE?

Will you be addressing your clutter by category (such as clothing, books, sentimental items) or by location (like

122

December 2020

a desk drawer, pantry, garage)? If you are tidying up your entire home, I highly recommend doing so by category. If you have only a small space within a room to address, you will be content to tidy by location.

WHAT WILL YOU DO WITH YOUR DISCARDS?

Decide how you will handle items you wish to donate or sell. Research your options and call ahead for donation or consignment locations and hours of operation. Pro tip: Plan to get discards out of your space as quickly as possible.

WILL YOU DIY?

Once you’ve answered the first four questions, you’ll have a better idea whether you are up to the task on your own or need help. Please don’t get overwhelmed and deterred from achieving your tidying goals. Request the help you need!

FOR ACTIVE MOMS, KROC CENTER CAN BE A

lifesaver

Wondering how to maintain a fitness routine while caring for your little ones? The Salvation Army Kroc Center offers a solution. While moms work out, attend a class or participate in programs at the Biloxi facility, their children can enjoy structured, supervised fun in the Kroc Center’s Play Care program. “We normally have at least two Play Care staff members to watch the children in the Play Care area, which features an indoor treehouse with a slide,” says Morgan Shiyou, marketing and public relations manager for the Salvation Army. The staff members are well-qualified employees and volunteers, she adds, who are properly trained in first aid, CPR/AED and child safety. Play Care is free to children with a membership for the first two hours. For others, the fee is $3 per hour. Members can purchase additional time for $3 per hour per child. Children must have a membership or a day pass and be checked in by a parent or guardian.

PLAY CARE GUIDELINES ARE AS FOLLOWS: • Parent or guardian must remain in the facility. • Availability is on a first-come, first-served basis for children ages 2 months to 12 years. • Parents must diaper and discipline their own children and will be paged/called to Play Care as needed. • Snacks and drinks are allowed, except those containing peanuts (due to allergy concerns). • Children who appear sick will not be admitted. This policy is strictly enforced to protect the 126

health and safety of all children and staff. • Play Care hours are subject to change with reasonable notice. Adults and kids alike can find plenty to keep them occupied at the Kroc Center, according to Shiyou. The 52,000-square-foot community center has an indoor pool, two-story water slide, fitness center, track and field, gym, arts and more. While the center is membership based, it offers scholarships to those who may not be able to afford to join and hosts free events that are open to the public. “Year after year, the Kroc Center remains committed to meeting the needs of the community and finding innovate new ways to become an inclusive space for all,” Shiyou says. “During the COVID-19 pandemic, we ensured our members received the necessary tools to get through difficult times, such as virtual fitness programs, drive-thru food pickups and children-centered social media events.” For the holiday season, the center has planned a virtual Santa visit, Holiday Shape Up weight-loss contest and an eight-week membership opportunity for $20. The $50 membership fee will be waived for the month of January, Shiyou says, adding, “Let’s get 2021 off to a good start!”

What Be proactive about

estate planning

The last thing a family wants to do during the holidays is think about or discuss estate planning. But families usually are together during this time, including elderly relatives, so it’s an ideal opportunity to address this BY KATHY BROWN VAN ZUTPHEN subject. Estate planning is not just about what happens when someone dies. It also includes plans while family members are alive. In an emergency, it’s important to know what is in place and where important documents are located. Therefore, it is helpful to ask your family members, especially any aging family members, in advance if they have made plans or have preferences if they become incapacitated. At a minimum, it is good to know such wishes, whether they have executed any of the following legal documents and where to find them.

The unexpected happens… You have a stroke or dementia… Your child has special needs… You have the death of a loved one… You have an unexpected injury…

ADVANCED HEALTHCARE DIRECTIVES This document informs health care professionals about a patient’s wishes regarding end-of-life medical decisions — or it can allow someone else to make such decisions if the individual is unconscious or unable to state such preferences. The purpose of this document is to include a healthcare power of attorney and/or advance directive so another person may become your agent and voice if you become unable to speak for yourself. This document can be flexible, and specific instructions may be added to include any particular wishes in the event of incapacitation.

YOU HAVE QUESTIONS? WE CAN HELP.

TRUST OR LAST WILL AND TESTAMENT A trust is a legal document stating directions for how the trustee — who could be you, your loved one or another named individual — should hold and handle certain assets, including how and when the assets should be spent and who benefits from them. This includes the use or allocation of the assets during the life and after the death of the trust creator. A last will and testament states what happens to assets upon the death of the person who owned them and created the will. After a loved one develops dementia, it is too late to create these documents. They must be made and signed before he or she loses the mental ability, or legal capacity, to sign them. The documents always can be amended later as long as the individual has the mental capacity to do so. Therefore, it’s in everyone’s best interest to ensure these documents are in place so a person’s wishes are known and her voice is always heard. Gift giving doesn't have to cause

money stress What comes to mind when you recall holidays gone by? Do you have sweet memories of time spent with friends and family, or unpleasant memories of family and gift-buying stress — along with debt to start the new year? I can’t eliminate the stress caused by 2020 or relatives, but I can provide a few financial tips to help prevent debt remorse in 2021. Review the list of people for whom you purchase gifts. If you have not set aside the funds, is buying presents really worth going into debt? Would you want others going into debt to buy for you? Do they really need or want the item you plan to give them? My two sons have a tradition, which exemplifies what gift giving sometimes becomes; one of them hands the other a $100 bill, which the recipient in turn hands back to his brother. Nothing is accomplished but the expected exchange. How often do you buy for someone because you think they will buy for you? Gift giving has become an obligation instead of a joy. If you find yourself feeling obligated, the people on your list may feel the same. Perhaps their financial situation is even tighter than yours. Be bold, be brave and be real. Have a conversation and explain you're stepping back from spending on gifts to allow more joy in your holidays; remove some stress from yourself and from them. For the gifts you do purchase, set a budget or spending cap. In my immediate family, we draw names for the adults and set a limit for the items we plan to buy. This helps eliminate negative feelings on both sides when one person spends more than the other. Instead of focusing on cost, be creative. Something handmade often means more than any store-bought item ever could. Do you have special cookies or jelly everyone loves? Do you have artistic talents — the ability to draw, write poetry or make a craft? As my mother aged, we printed some of the poems she had written and framed them as gifts for the family. Those types of items usually cost much less and have more value. My sister, Liz, started a wonderful tradition with her children when they were young. She helped them create handmade gifts and baked items, and before they received any gifts, they gave their gifts to family members. They had so much joy as they saw how excited we were to receive their gifts; it was a special time for them and for us. It's important to teach children the value of time and 128

money. How often have you purchased an expensive item to see it soon discarded? How many times do children play with the box instead of the toy? Just because something is on their gift list does not mean you must buy it. Requiring them to earn and save their money to buy the item they think they can’t live without will help teach them patience, diligence and self-control. These things will help them as they grow into adults while laying the foundation of financial wisdom. After all, isn’t financial wisdom one of the things we desire for ourselves and our families? December 2020

In our current climate, more people are working from home to avoid Covid-19. Unfortunately, that puts all of us at greater risk for a computer virus. Almost every week, headlines frighten us with news about data breaches, cyber attacks and identity theft. Innocentlooking emails entice us to click thorough to unprotected sites that download a computer infection or scams to steal our money and information. Whether you’re a worker or a business owner, we’re all at risk. Cyber attacks are a daily occurrence, and they impact small and large businesses alike. Being knowledgeable and prepared are good defenses, along with the use of firewalls, strong passwords, updated software and a strong home network. Your home insurance policy also may offer identity theft protection to help you with the lengthy restoration process of regaining your credit reputation and associated legal expenses if you are the victim of a scam. Most businesses use computers and collect their customers’ credit card information and personal data. A security breach could destroy or corrupt critical databases and leak confidential information. Your business reputation will be damaged as clients lose trust. Depending on the severity, a data breach could result in a loss of important data, which requires time and expense to recover. Operations may cease while the breach source is determined. Long shutdowns could lead to loss of customers and more lost revenue. Regulatory fines may be imposed, along with costly required notifications to customers regarding the breach. Your business may sustain a huge financial loss due to a data breach, and a cyber attack may disable your computers. Over 60 percent of small businesses will go out of businesses after experiencing a cyber attack. The average data breach costs over $200,000 to rectify, so it is prudent to consider a good cyber insurance policy that will help you to provide funds to cover business interruption, legal defense, customer notification and credit monitoring after a data breach. Be alert to potential problems and implement strong security for your network, applications and information. Be prepared for the worst with solid disaster recovery and business continuation plans.
