Take the dread out of holiday travel BY TAMMY SMITH

TRAVELING OVER THE HOLIDAYS ALWAYS CARRIES A CERTAIN AMOUNT OF STRESS, BUT SEVERAL FACTORS CAN UP THAT STRESS LEVEL THIS YEAR. HERE ARE SOME SUGGESTIONS THAT MIGHT MAKE THAT TRIP A LITTLE MORE ENJOYABLE.

recently, so getting through airport security is likely to take longer. The situation is similar for all facets of the travel and hospitality industry, so don’t be surprised to see long lines at hotels, rental car counters and elsewhere. Don’t be in a rush; leave yourself a time buffer.

DON’T STRESS

That’s easier said than done, but find ways to relax before and during the trip. Practice deep breathing and listen PLAN EARLY to uplifting music if you’re driving. Make a few stops for Book airfare and hotel rooms as soon as possible. You might stretches and fresh air. Think about the purpose of your trip: even find some deals by shopping around! Reserve your rental You’re getting away to a destination or going to visit loved car now if you plan to drive. Try to avoid the peak travel days. ones on a special day. For Christmas, that would be Dec. 23 and the day or two after Dec. 25. If you can, try leaving Dec. 22 and returning after Dec. 27. If you’re willing to travel on Christmas Day, that could be another way to save, although you’ll celebrate the holiday later.

HEALTH IN MIND

If you’re flying, be aware of the COVID-19 guidelines, both in your own state and in the state you’re visiting. If you are traveling internationally, a negative COVID-19 test may be required prior to arrival at your destination and upon your return to the U.S., even if you’re vaccinated. Remember, you will be required to wear a mask while in the airport and while in flight. Bring hand sanitizer, too.

ON THE ROAD

If you’re driving, be prepared for a variety of gas prices. A gallon of gas here on the Mississippi Coast could be much less expensive than in other parts of the country. Pack snacks for fewer stops along the way. Keep hand sanitizer in the car for when you do need to stop.

IN THE AIR

Consider signing up for a TSA PreCheck membership (https://www.tsa.gov/precheck/faq) to shorten your time in line, but still be prepared for a wait. Download your boarding pass to your phone before you arrive.

GIVE YOURSELF PLENTY OF TIME

Whether you are driving or flying, expect heavy traffic and plan accordingly. TSA has experienced staffing shortages

FOOD FOR THOUGHT

MGCCC food pantries provide STUDENTS security & opportunities for success

Student volunteers at the #DoMore Food Pantry on MGCCC’s Jackson County Campus shop for turkeys for a holiday meal giveaway offered through the campus food pantry. Food pantries also offer pop-up food pantries around campus, allowing students to grab healthy snacks and drinks on their way to and from class.

For more information about MGCCC food pantries and professional clothes closets & how to make donations, SCAN THE QR CODE or CALL 228.896.2536.

Mississippi Gulf Coast Community College is committed to providing an atmosphere that promotes academic and personal success for its students. One of the ways that mission is accomplished is through food pantries located at each campus and center, providing access to a variety of food items for students and their families, and many full-meal options as well. The food pantries also provide hygiene items, and some of them offer a professional closet where students can get access to clothing and accessories for job interviews and other professional events. “The food pantries are critical to our campuses because the poverty rate is so high in certain areas,” said Hannah Summerlin, a Jackson County Campus food pantry student volunteer. “If a student must worry about being hungry and where they will get their next meal, or about their children being hungry, they won’t be able to do their schoolwork at their full potential. The negative effects of hunger stack the odds against student success. The food pantries on our campus give students a more equitable opportunity to succeed in and out of the classroom.” Food insecurity on college campuses has become a nationally recognized issue. Students want to attend college and spend their limited funds on tuition, transportation and, at times, childcare. Very little is left over for meals. This often places an undue burden on students and prevents them from focusing on academics. To keep the pantries full, college clubs and organizations host food and clothing drives, and other events that raise awareness of the need for supplies. Just this year, the food pantries held a World’s Largest Jambalaya Fundraiser and won the Guinness World Record for the largest amount of jambalaya prepared and served in one seating. Carin Platt, #DoMore Food Pantry coordinator at the Jackson County Campus, said the pantries depend on students to make them work. “It is so awesome is that this is a studentled initiative to have food pantries on our campuses. They volunteer to work at the pantries, they host the food drives, and they get out and talk about why we need the pantries. They really get their fellow students involved. Without them 13 we could not offer allwww.gcwmultimedia.com of this to students in need.”

EMBRACING CHANGE With our ever-changing world, there comes a need to evolve in all aspects of life. 2020 accelerated change in many ways we live our lives on a day-to-day basis. Where we call “home” is one of them and it plays a huge role in these changes. People often wonder, “Why are house prices rising so quickly?” The simple answer is that inventory is low and demand is high. Although this is a true statement, there are many other factors at play. One of the most impactful is the increasing trend of home food deliveries and online shopping. Companies like Amazon and Waitr have made leaving your home and going to a store to shop for basic goods and items almost irrelevant, and because of this, society has started to invest even more in their homes. Having the convenience of getting almost anything delivered to our doorstep has increased the time Americans are spending at home. “Home” is more important than ever, which is driving more and more people into the housing market. One thing that is constant is change, and this definitely applies to the housing market. Having an experienced, full-time real estate professional to help guide you through these changes when you’re buying or selling is crucial. Please call or text if you would like help or have questions, I am here to help and guide you through this process when you’re ready.

MS Senior World crowns new royalty FROM MS SENIOR WORLD PAGEANTS

THEY ARE TRUE QUEENS —AND NOW THEY HAVE THE TIARAS TO PROVE IT. Jacqueline Elliott of Midlothian, Texas, Tammy Little Haynes of Section, Alabama, and Mary East of Oxford, Mississippi dazzled at the MS Senior World Pageant, held Nov. 6-11 in Ocean Springs, and earned the contest’s top national titles. Elliott of Midlothian, Texas won the title of MS Senior World 50s while Haynes was named MS Senior World 60s and East won the title of MS Senior World 70s. In all, 17 delegates representing states from Connecticut to Colorado participated in the pageant, which brings women aged 50-79 together to boost confidence, have fun, make new friends and provide an outlet to bring attention to important issues. which highlights the accomplishments of senior women, also sought online votes for the People’s Choice Award. The public was invited to vote for their favorite delegate by donating to the pageant, and the winner was guaranteed a spot in the semi-finals. Approximately $12,000 was raised during the month-long campaign, according to organizers, to buy cases of outreach bibles that will be shipped to various countries around the world. Delegates underwent a 10-minute scored interview with judges from throughout the country. They also competed on stage in active lifestyle wear, fashion vogue and evening gowns. Judges ranked finalists based on a tally of those scores, along with their interview score. According to the pageant website, MS. Senior World is “a way to show the world the value senior women bring to their communities and their states.” “These senior ladies are very active in serving others, and MS Senior World affords them a venue to share in a fabulous event where they are the center of attention,” the website states. “It is a wonderful way to educate and empower the delegates and the audience by showing the world what they can accomplish.” For updates on the pageant and other information, visit https://www.seniorworldpageants.com To participate in the 2022-2023 pageant, contact: MS Senior World Pageant organizers via email at info@seniorworldpageants.com

Teaching more than dance DONNA BURKE HAS BUILT DECADES-LONG LEGACY OF CHANGING LIVES BY JENNIFER GENTILE

Donna Burke may be a dance teacher, but to students like 13-year-old Lennon Womble, she’s also a life coach. Womble, who started training with Burke at age 3, says her instructor has a knack for teaching life lessons along with choreography. “I consider her family; she’s really changed my life and made it better,” Womble says. “Honestly, just being around her makes me happy!” Since her daughter came under Burke’s tutelage, her mother, LeAnne WombleReilly, has watched a “painfully shy” child blossom into a confident teen. She gives Burke much of the credit for the transformation, calling her “one of the most giving and selfless people I have ever known.” “She gives of herself 200 percent — to her dancers, her friends, her family and her community,” Womble-Reilly says. “She has truly built a legacy over the past 40-plus years and remains the most humble person. I am honored to call her my friend.” At age 73, Burke still teaches ballet and jazz four days a week at her studio, Donna’s Visual and Performing Arts Center in Ocean Springs, and choreographs for the studio’s competition team, DKG. Several of her dancers have

gone on to Broadway, Disney and Las Vegas, as well as casinos and cruise lines. “My students are always amazing me, and if it weren’t for their inspiration, I believe I would not be where I am today,” Burke says. “Every time another student becomes a professional dancer and fulfills her dreams, you know you have had an impact on her life.” In her own life, Burke says the old adage applies: “You don’t choose dance; it chooses you.” She enjoyed dance but never intended to make it her career. “I started because that’s what little girls do,” Burke says. “When I learned that I was good at it, it was even better. I enjoyed the creativity of the different styles and assisting other teachers.” While attending the University of Southern Mississippi, Burke taught dance at a studio in Hattiesburg to earn extra money, and she’s been instructing ever since. She’s had studios in Richton, Leakesville and Sand Hill and was the first certified jazzercise teacher in the state. For a time, she also taught gymnastics. When she and her husband came to the Coast in the 1970s, Ocean Springs had no dance studio — so Burke opened one. Her passion for dance appears to run in the family, as both of her daughters and one of her granddaughters have turned professional. Her studio has grown to include eight teachers and around 350 students, and classes are offered in ballet, tap, jazz, contemporary, lyrical, pointe, hip-hop and street jazz. The quality of instruction is evident in the numerous regional and national awards the studio has amassed over the years. According to WombleReilly, Burke doesn’t let her students settle for mediocrity in dance or any other aspect of life. “She is tough, no doubt Lennon Womble and Donna Burke in the ocean about that — very tough — but I love that for my child,” she says. “You don’t

24

December 2021

get anywhere in life if you aren’t forced to work hard for what you want. “She wants her students to be their best, and she pushes hard for that. And she gets amazing results.”

Olivia Gilmore, Donna Burke, Lennon Womble and Mary Beth Geiser embrace after a private ballet lesson

Womble is in her seventh year with DKG and has won first- and secondplace honors with solos, as well as many placements with groups, including best in show. Burke putting her in a featured turn section with two older girls was a milestone in her life, Womble-Reilly says, and seeing that her teacher believed in her helped her daughter gain selfconfidence. “Donna pushes her every day to speak up and have pride and faith in herself,” she adds. “She talks to her about more than just dance, and that goes a long way with a 13-year-old-girl.” Each day brings something different, but Burke tries to set an example by meeting it with prayer and a positive attitude. She also doesn’t want her students to place too much value on trophies — especially since failure is often a better teacher than success. “Wins will come and go,” she says, “so store these in your heart and become a better person who can help others.” For the wins she’s experienced, which include receiving a key to the city and the respect of the community, Burke thanks “the great man upstairs.” “God has been with me all thru my dance years,” she says, “and I give him all the credit for my success.”

We’ve all been waiting patiently to show off our fiercest outfits, and it’s officially time to step out, sparkle and dip our toes in some of the season’s hottest trends. “Everyone is ready for fun in 2021,” says Wendy Figer, founder and CEO of Gabrielle’s boutique in Biloxi, who adds that this season “is all about the glam, festive and eye-catching styles.” As in-person holiday gatherings ramp up and we fill our calendars with parties and celebrations, it’s only fitting that our looks reflect the elevated mood. By popular decree, it’s time to recapture the joy of dressing up.

WHAT’S TRENDING

“Holiday collections are bringing vibrant jewel tones, leather looks and fur,” Figer says, adding, “I love jewel-toned colored fabrics in the winter months; they are rich and vibrant and bring out the beauty of your natural skin tone.” Women may have a certain idea in mind when they shop for fashion this time of year, but Figer says holiday attire can be anything from formalwear to themed or novelty pieces. “Within each category, there are numerous variations and options,” she says. “For example, cocktail can be a glitzy, off-theshoulder and above-the-knee dress or a wax-coated pair of designer denim paired back with a silk top and a stunning piece of jewelry.”

DRESS FOR THE OCCASION

Whether comfort is key or you’re looking to turn heads, Figer says always consider the venue and theme when selecting your ensemble. She has found that the Coast has a fun, flashy and sophisticated style of dressing for holiday parties that’s all its own. The main factor to consider when outfit planning this season, she says, is how you feel in what you’re wearing. “An outfit creates your mood; confidence comes from a level of comfort,” Figer says. “Allow your style to complement you!”

Festive fashion advice FROM THE EXPERTS

Figer likes to use a layering concept when building a winter wardrobe. “The basic bodysuit starts the building block, and from there, we create our own style — maybe a chucky, cable-knit cardigan with a pair of faux leather Spanx-leggings or a stunning sleek leather blazer with designer, dark straight-leg denim. Accessories pull it all together, creating your own signature look that is ‘on trend.’”

Wendy Figer, founder and CEO, Gabrielle’s

HER TOP TIPS:

1. When dressing for a holiday event, never forget the accessories; they make an outfit. Accessories are an investment that pay off for years to come. They are the final touch. 2. Your outfit should complement you. 3. Find a style you love and be you, feeling confident showing the world who you are. 4. Confidence is fueled by comfort. 5. It’s always better to be overdressed versus underdressed.

Walklet says “slinky silk slip dresses and super sparkle” also are on-trend for the 2021 holiday season. She expects camel to feature heavily in the color palette, along with burnt orange, deep green and, for a fresh, festive twist, lavender. “The holiday party is where festive meets fashion,” Walklet adds. “Soft velvets, flowing silk, fun feathers and dresses adorned with sequins are holiday party attire necessities.”

HER TOP TIPS:

Rachel Walklet, retail buyer, Scarlet Pearl Casino Resort

1. Don’t forget to accessorize! If you opt for a little black dress, add a pop of color with shoes, statement jewelry or even a bold lip color. 2. Do your research to understand where an event is, what the theme is and whether it’s inside or outside before planning your outfit. 3. Comfort is king! A fabulous outfit does not pair well with a pained expression. 4. Be bold! The holidays are a time for celebration, and your outfit should reflect that. 5. Coordinate! If you’re attending an event with your partner, take the time to coordinate your looks.

Festive fashion advice FROM THE EXPERTS

Maycee Scardino, wedding planner and stylist, The Wedding Collection

While she’s thrilled by the prospect of seeing feathers on everything from sleeves to dress hems, she’s even more excited about crushed velvet — one of her favorite trends this time of year. “It’s comfortable and dressy with the perfect amount of shine,” she says. Hunter green is a popular color for everyday outfits, Scardino adds, while gold is the go-to for some sparkle — or fuchsia to make a statement. “When it comes to the holiday season,” she says, “everyone loves attire that makes them shine from head to toe.”

HER TOP TIPS:

1. Don’t be afraid to stand out. Whether it’s a bold color or some extra sparkle, make everyone notice you when you walk in the room. 2. It’s always better to be overdressed than underdressed. 3. Accessorize with a statement piece, whether it’s a pair of earrings, a headband or a clutch. 4. Wear a pair of shoes that make you feel confident. 5. Remember to have fun in your outfit.

2022 FASHION FORECAST

Get ready to

MOVE BY JASMINE BALL

I

’m so excited that 2022 is right around the corner! This means new clothes, new trends and lots of new opportunities to switch up your style. This new season of life should be all about dressing up and having fun. Last year, we experienced some challenging times, to say the least, and many of us lived in comfy loungewear as we worked and studied from home. Now that the world has largely reopened, we can go all out. When you are clothes shopping this season and beyond, find pieces that are fashionably you — or if you’re feeling bold, step out of your comfort zone and try something new. As restricted as the pandemic had us for many months, it’s only right that the latest trends evoke a feeling of movement. Expect to see a lot of clothing with fun, whimsical elements like tassels, trims and feathers that exude a sense of energy and give you a boost of confidence as you’re out and about. Take this fun, faux-fur-fringe trimmed coat from Macy’s for example. Not only does the color give pumpkin spice vibes, but it’s also super fashionable. I guarantee that heads will turn wherever you go. Seeing feathers enter the mix for the end of the year and beyond gives me all the best vibes. Feathers just scream fun! I love that I’m noticing them in ordinary, yet unexpected, places, like the edges of a blazer or the cuffs of a dress. Even if you love dabbling in trends, don’t forget that the key to a great wardrobe is to purchase clothing that will last you for years to come. I love outfits that you can transition for the next occasion or event with some subtle styling tweaks. Have fun with your wardrobe this holiday season and into the new year! ‘Tis the season to MAKE YOUR HOME MERRY AND BRIGHT FOR THE HOLIDAYS WITH THESE EXPERT TIPS BY JENNIFER MILLER

Expecting company over the holidays? This is the time to unleash your creativity and design a setting for memories that will be treasured for many years to come. IF YOU’RE INSPIRED TO MAKE YOUR HOME LOOK MAGICAL THIS SEASON BUT NEED SOME HELP GETTING STARTED, HERE ARE SOME TIPS: • The key to making your home warm and welcoming is a well-decorated entranceway. Drape your door with Christmas lights and festive garland to create an inviting and cozy atmosphere. Another useful tip is to create a “wow” factor in each room. Sparkling centerpieces, dazzling trees or glitzy garland is the perfect way to bring your space to life. • Decorative garland is a must have in every holiday home. Even if you do not have a mantle, it can be draped on a TV stand, a bookshelf, a staircase, above cabinetry or all the above. • When creating an eye-catching Christmas display, it’s all about size and pizazz! In interior design, things always look better in threes. Try using décor in different shapes and sizes; alternating the height and volume of your decorations is a simple yet effective way to mesmerize your guests. • When decorating this holiday season, don’t be afraid to mix silver and gold together. Also, it is okay to step away from the traditional Christmas reds and greens. Pink, teal, and lime green can be a fun pop of color to include your Christmas décor. • Additionally, consider how your color scheme meshes with the style of your room. While decorating your tree, use large ornaments, velvet flowers and an untraditional tree topper. Include holiday candles, fresh pinecones or cinnamon sticks to capture the entire Christmas experience in your home. Jennifer Miller is a certified interior designer, professional home stager and the president of Jennuwine Design, Sophisticated Staging. Reach her at jenn@jennuwinedesign.net.

BY ANDREA YEAGER

Making

cookies... and memories

F

ew activities are more fun than spending time in the kitchen with a child or grandchild, and it is certainly the season to do so now. Like my daughter did, my granddaughter loves cooking with me. It is a bonding time, just like it was years ago with my grandmother. She had the patience of Job and was an exceptional cook. She encouraged me to create my own recipes, and when I did, she would carefully write them down on recipe cards. Yes, she was the best.

Lilly, my 9-year-old granddaughter, likes cooking so much that she will ask if she can help. Like most youngsters, making cookies and cakes is her forte. She certainly has her specialties: Mexican wedding and ginger cookies. She does her own version of the wedding cookies, leaving out the nuts, but they still work well. If you like nuts, use them; if you don’t, don’t. The wedding cookies are quick to make, so that means she gets to eat them sooner. Her mom also likes to hang around to be the taste-tester. It becomes a productive family time for us. Ever since Lilly was about 3 or 4, she and I make the wedding cookies to give as gifts for teachers and friends, and, yes, to enjoy ourselves. One of Lilly’s past teachers offers to pay Lilly to make the cookies because her family likes them so much, and as a teacher, she has little free time. While Lilly does not make the cookies for money, she was thrilled that the

56

December 2021

cookies tasted so good. Something as small as baking cookies boosts her self-esteem, which is so important in kids. Since she is older, Lilly can do the whole recipe by herself, including using the stand mixer. I can supervise while she does all the work, a nice change for a grandmother. I enjoy watching her cook because she is so serious about it. She measures ingredients precisely, leveling off each cup or teaspoon, which is what one must do when baking; guessing or eyeballing amounts does not work. I love recipes that do triple- and double-duty. Our ginger cookies do just that. We can make gingerbread girls and boys, stars, Christmas trees and reindeer for Christmas. For Thanksgiving, the cookies become turkeys, pumpkins or even cornucopias. Halloween called for monsters made with green and brown candy melts and candy corn for earplugs. The ginger cookies are a rollout cookie. The dough, which features old-time molasses and spices, is shaped into two balls and put in the freezer to chill for about 15 minutes, which allows the dough to be firm enough to roll out and cut with cookie cutters. For Christmas, we sometimes paint skirts and faces on the ginger girls with candy melts or cake icing. Most craft stores and some grocery stores now sell containers of white bakery icing. I buy a large tub, stick it in the refrigerator and grab it when we make cookies. It makes for quick work of cookie baking. Another favorite that we like is the candy cane cookies, but these require practice for little hands. Lilly gets frustrated when hers do not turn out as uniform as she wants. I simply tell her that folks will enjoy eating them anyway. Cooking is not brain surgery, so let’s not stress. For your holiday season, here are Lilly’s favorite cookies to try with kids and grands. We hope you enjoy then as much as we do. Merry Christmas, Happy Hanukah and Happy Kwanza from our kitchen to yours.

Stir together 1 cup sugar, the butter, milk, vanilla, peppermint extract and egg in large bowl. Stir in flour, baking powder and salt. Divide dough in half. Stir in food coloring into one half. Cover and refrigerate at least four hours. Heat oven to 375 degrees. Stir together peppermint candy and two tablespoons sugar; set aside For each candy cane, shape one rounded teaspoon of dough from each half into four-inch rope by rolling back and forth on a floured surface. Place one red and white rope side by side; press together lightly and twist. Place on ungreased cookie sheet; curve top of cookies down to form handle of cane. Bake nine to 12 minutes or until set and very light brown. Immediately sprinkle candy mixture over cookies. Remove from cookie sheet to wire rack. Cool completely, about 30 minutes. -- Recipe from www.bettycrocker.com

What’s on your

beauty wish list THIS HOLIDAY SE A SON?

Message me to let me know what’s on your wish list this year! BY LAUREN RILEY Lauren Riley is a makeup artist and hairdresser on the Coast, specializing in on-location wedding and event makeup, blondes and hand-tied extensions. Contact her or learn more at www.laurenrileyhairmakeup.com or facebook.com/laurenrileyhairmakeup.

The holidays are my absolute favorite time of year; I find so much joy in giving! With that being said, I have some ideas to help you find the perfect gifts for the ladies on your list. Well — at least the perfect gift for those like me who love all things hair and makeup. This season is the perfect time to stock up on amazing goodies, as there are so many options available for everyone. HERE ARE SOME SUGGESTIONS THAT ANY BEAUTY AFFICIONADO WOULD BE HAPPY TO FIND UNDER THE TREE: • Everyone used to beg for a Chi blow dryer and, of course, the Chi black flat iron (because the pink one just didn’t do the job). However, in my opinion, Chi now has some competition. There are so many new blow dryers out, and my own Chi is at the end of its life. I am so excited to try the new Croc Crystalline One-Touch Infrared Dryer because I absolutely love the brand’s flat iron and the reviews are amazing. ($129.99 Ulta.com) • Too Faced makeup comes out with a new gift box every Christmas. Normally it has a few blushes, sometimes a contour and/or highlight and a several eye shadow shades. This year’s release is the Too Faced Christmas in London Makeup Set ($45, Ulta.com). It is the perfect on-the-go kit to take anywhere, and it’s always a hit when I buy it for someone I know. This present is definitely worth fighting for in your annual game of “Dirty Santa.”

58

December 2021

• Last, but certainly not least, on my wish list this year is lashes — specifically Ardell Lash Demi Wispies ($11.99, Ulta). They come in packs of five and are easy to apply while accentuating your eyes in the

most natural, yet glamorous, way. You can use them multiple times if you clean them between wears. (Pro tip: look down while applying lashes instead of closing your eyes, and always wait until the glue is tacky before application.)

MAKING COOKIES CONTINUED FROM PAGE 56

MEXICAN WEDDING COOKIES • 1 cup butter • 1/2 cup white sugar • 2 teaspoons vanilla extract • 2 teaspoons water • 2 cups all-purpose flour • 1 cup chopped almonds or pecans, if using • 1/2 cup confectioners’ sugar

In a medium bowl, cream the butter and sugar. Stir in vanilla and water. Add the flour and almonds; mix until blended. Cover and chill for three hours. Preheat oven to 325 degrees. Shape dough into balls or crescents. Place on an ungreased cookie sheet and bake for 15 to 20 minutes in the preheated oven. Remove from pan to cool on wire racks. When cookies are cool, roll in confectioners’ sugar. Store at room temperature in an airtight container. – Recipe from www.allrecipes.com

GINGER CUTOUT COOKIES • 1 1/2 cups sugar • 1 cup butter or margarine, softened (I use butter) • 3 tablespoons mild-flavor (light) molasses • 1 egg • 2 tablespoons milk • 3 1/4 cups all-purpose flour • 2 teaspoons baking soda • 2 teaspoons cinnamon • 1 1/2 teaspoons ground ginger • 1/2 teaspoon ground cloves • 1/2 teaspoon nutmeg

In a large bowl, beat sugar, butter and molasses with an electric mixer on medium speed until well blended. Beat in egg and milk. Stir in flour, baking soda, cinnamon, ginger, cloves and nutmeg until dough forms. Divide dough into two balls; flatten each ball to make a 4-inch disk. Wrap each disk in plastic wrap; refrigerate for about an hour or until firm or freeze for 15 minutes. Heat oven to 350 degrees. On a floured surface, roll each dough disk into 12-by-9-inch rectangle. Cut with cookie cutters of your choice. Place an inch apart on ungreased cookie sheet. Bake six to eight minutes or until set. Do not overbake. These harden as they cool. Immediately remove from cookie sheet to cooling rack. Cool completely, 15 to 20 minutes. In a small bowl, melt candy melts in microwave for 10 seconds and repeat until melted. Place melted candy into decorating bag with end snipped to begin decorating, or use food coloring to tint bakery icing. Sprinkles can be added along with icing outlines. Chocolate chips can be used for eyes and multi-colored candies for cheeks, buttons and noses. – Recipe from www.bettycrocker.com

Members of the Krewe of Aurora pose for a group photo during their fall cocktail party at the Biloxi Visitors Center.

A new krewe dawns with the creation of Aurora BY TAMMY SMITH

T

here’s a new krewe on the Mississippi Gulf Coast, and it’s all about the ladies. The Krewe of Aurora was established in April 2021 and now has about 100 members. Aurora was designed to give women an opportunity to enjoy the fun and festivities of Carnival season. “A bunch of us wanted something different,” explains Aurora Captain Farris Freeman. “We wanted to give everyone a chance to join, an opportunity to be part of a krewe.” For many female krewes, joining depends on being added to a long wait list or receiving an invitation from a current member. For Aurora, “You just have to be over the age of 21,” Freeman says. In addition to having members from across the Coast, she adds, “We have members in Panama City (Florida), Tennessee and Louisiana.” Aurora’s ball lines also offer something for everyone. “We have non-dancing and dancing lines. So, if you want to do the dance moves, you can, and if you don’t, you can still be out there in costume,” Freeman says. The krewe’s costumes are being made in Kenner, Louisiana. This newest member of the Mississippi Coast Mardi

Gras krewes is named for the goddess of dawn in Roman mythology; ancient Greeks knew her as Eos. The krewe’s logo shows Aurora holding a golden sun. Krewe colors are purple (royal majesty, sovereignty and justice), pink (love, kindness and femininity) and orange (enthusiasm, creativity, encouragement and determination). During their first year, the Krewe of Aurora has been having fun with events such as a fall cocktail party, a drag brunch and a $1,000 drawdown and silent auction at The Cannery. The ball will be held New Year’s Eve, with the theme “Aurora Takes Reign,” and entertainment will be provided by Atlanta band Party Nation. The ladies of Aurora also will get to parade their first year. “We’ll be in the Neptune parade,” scheduled for 5:30 p.m. on Saturday, Feb. 26, in downtown Biloxi, Freeman says. To learn more about the Krewe of Aurora, including membership details, visit www.kreweofaurora.com, or visit their Facebook page.

health

THIS HOLIDAY SEASON, GIVE YOURSELF

the gift of health BY DR. PAM TULI

Regular exercise, as well as maintaining a healthy diet and body weight, are key factors to staying healthy. However, amid the festive gatherings, the abundance of goodies and the hustle and bustle of the holidays, it is very easy for these aspects of our health to get off track. Most adults gain weight over the holiday season, and although the average magnitude of weight gain is small (usually only 1 to 2 pounds), the majority of people never lose what they gained. Over the years, that holiday weight gain adds up! Here are some tips to keep your health on track this holiday season. PRIORITIZE EXERCISE 1.

Build exercise into your schedule. If you schedule exercise into your routine, you are more likely to stick with it. 2. Plan to exercise early in the morning, before work and other activities. In the morning, your will power is stronger than it is later in the day. Also, later in the day, you are more likely to get distracted by holiday parties, to-dos, etc. 3. Be flexible. Don’t have an all-or-nothing attitude. If something comes up, modify your workout. Can’t go to the gym? Do something at home like pushups, squats or a brisk walk around the neighborhood. Don’t have a full 30 minutes? Do 15 minutes. Any workout is better than none. If you missed your workout today, forgive yourself and get back on track tomorrow.

BE MINDFUL OF CALORIC INTAKE 1.

Don’t go to holiday parties on an empty stomach. Eat a protein-rich snack prior to the party. You will feel satisfied and be less likely to overindulge. 2. Drink plenty of water. We can confuse thirst with hunger. Drinking water helps us feel full and consume fewer calories as a result. 3. When not at holiday parties or gatherings, try to stick your normal diet and eat plenty of fruits and vegetables. 4. Focus on portion size. You don’t need to sacrifice your favorite holiday dishes; just be mindful of your portions. 5. Eat slowly. The quicker we eat, the less time our body has to register fullness. It takes our brains about 20 minutes to recognize that we are full! So, wait a bit before getting the second serving.

72

December 2021

6. Limit liquid calories. Alcoholic beverages and other calorie-rich beverages can contribute a significant number of calories to your holiday diet. In addition to the calories, overindulging in alcohol can increase your appetite, causing you to eat more. Alternate a glass of water or non-caloric beverage with alcoholic beverages.

GET PLENTY OF SLEEP

Adequate sleep is essential to good health. Sleep deprivation, which is quite common during the holidays, can contribute to weight gain. When we don’t get enough sleep, we tend to be hungrier, consume more calories and exercise less. Additionally, lack of sleep has been linked to slower metabolism. Make it a priority to get adequate sleep — about eight hours per night for most adults. During this holiday season, be mindful of your diet, exercise habits and get plenty of sleep to give yourself the gift of health.

IS IT A COLD, THE FLU, OR COVID-19? FROM MEMORIAL HOSPITAL

Feeling under the weather but unsure what ails you? Common illnesses often can act alike, and as we enter the season of mass gatherings, it’s important to be able to distinguish among a cold, the flu and COVID-19. Read on to learn the sometimes hard-to-miss differences, and be sure to follow tips for safe gathering during the holidays!

COLD SYMPTOMS

The Common Cold is usually mild for most and should run its course quickly. Symptoms include: • Itchy throat • Runny or stuffy nose • Sneezing • Slight fever

Flu Symptoms:

The flu can also be mild, but typically you will feel worse with the flu than with a cold. Symptoms can include: • Sudden fever • Chills • Headache • Body ache • Sore throat • Runny nose

• • • •

Cough Lethargy/Tiredness Lack of appetite You may even experience stomach pain, nausea, vomiting and diarrhea Your primary care provider can perform a test that identifies the flu virus. Most people who have the flu get better with rest, plenty of fluids and comfort. Sometimes medicine is prescribed to ease symptoms and shorten the illness. Memorial offers flu vaccines at walk-in clinics. Learn more by visiting wearememorial.com.

If you think you may have COVID-19, call (228) 867-5000 to find the nearest testing location. Centers for Disease Control and Prevention offer the following tips for safely gathering during the holidays: • Protect those not yet eligible for vaccination, such as young children, by getting yourself and other eligible people around them vaccinated. To find a vaccination location, visit wearememorial.com/coronavirus. • Wear well-fitting masks over your nose and mouth if you are in public indoor settings if you are not fully vaccinated. • Even those who are fully vaccinated should wear a mask in public indoor settings in communities with substantial to high transmission. Outdoors is safer than indoors.

74

December 2021

COVID-19 SYMPTOMS

COVID-19 symptoms can vary by person, as some can be mild while others have more severe, flu-like symptoms. The most obvious sign of COVID-19 is loss of taste or smell. Symptoms include: • Fever or chills • Cough • Shortness of breath or difficulty breathing • New loss of taste or smell • Sore throat • Congestion or runny nose • Nausea or vomiting • Diarrhea • Muscle or body aches • Headache

• Avoid crowded, poorly ventilated spaces. • If you are sick or have symptoms, don’t host or attend a gathering. • Get tested if you have COVID-19 symptoms or have had close contact with someone who has COVID-19. Memorial is a multi-specialty medical complex located in Gulfport. Learn more at http://www.wearememorial.com/.

MY TRANSFORMATION STORY:

APRIL ROGERS

BEFORE MY TRANSFORMATION

Before staring on my journey, I was at a low point in my life. I had no motivation at all. I really just gave up on myself. When I decided to join a local fitness studio, I knew I needed to change. I hated everything about myself, the way I looked in the mirror and the way I looked in clothes, and I knew getting my health and fitness back on track was what I needed for my self-love.

WHAT I DID

I set goals for myself, and once I joined the studio, I worked out one to two times a day, tracked my meals, drank water and stayed consistent on my meal plan.

THE MOST DIFFICULT PART

Although none of the process was easy, the most difficult part of my weight loss journey was finding the motivation within myself not to give up. Now, I finally can say I did it!

HOW I FEEL ABOUT MYSELF TODAY

I feel confident and happier, and I am 48 pounds lighter. I now recognize the girl in the mirror.

MY ADVICE TO OTHERS

My advice to others is to never give up. Take it day by day, and remember that nothing happens overnight. Stay dedicated, focused, and work hard. All things are possible; you just have to keep moving forward. I send a big shoutout to the trainers at the fitness studio and my fit family, who kept me on track and motivated and encouraged and pushed me to be great. Stay committed, trust the process and you can do it too!

HAVE FIVE MINUTES?

NEW RESOURCE CAN HELP YOU UNDERSTAND ADDICTION One in three people is affected by addiction or mental health issues, and a new, free resource is now available to those who are struggling and their loved ones. Caesars Foundation and Harrah’s Gulf Coast have gifted Mental Health Association of South Mississippi with a user-friendly website: justfive.org/ mentalhealthassocsms/. People of all ages can benefit from the site, which contains general education on topics like signs and symptoms and the dangers of opioids. PREVENTATIVE CARE MEDICINE

IT RUNS IN THE FAMILY Little did Tim and Tracy Sanford know that when they left the Mississippi Gulf Coast years ago, they would find their way back to our shores, this time with their children. Tim, Tracy, Laura and Mitchell Sanford are part of a tight-knit family, but one unique quality stands out most. Each are board-certified family medicine providers who have relocated to the Mississippi Gulf Coast to meet an increased demand for primary care services. Learn more about this dynamic family from physician and dad, Dr. Tim Sanford. When asked what the family’s philosophy of care is, Dr. Tim Sanford says, “We are all focused on preventive care. When possible, it is better to prevent disease and problems than to have to respond to them.” He continues, “We try to engage each patient in their wellness, realizing that working as a team with the patient (and at times with their family and with other specialists) is usually the most effective approach for the patient’s healthcare.” All family members received their Doctor of Osteopathic Medicine from Oklahoma State University. “We consciously take a ‘whole patient’ approach to healthcare. Our medical education focused on this from literally the first day of medical school (and honestly even before we started medical school, as this is a known focus of where we did our training), and we have fully integrated this into our practices,” says Dr. Sanford.

Tim and Tracy were raised on the Mississippi Gulf Coast and met while playing in band together at Harrison Central High School. They have been married for 33 years, and although they have spent most of their adulthood in Oklahoma, Mississippi always called to them. “By moving back to Mississippi, we intend to stay here for the rest of our careers. This is home and this is where we should be. We are looking forward to working with Memorial in the ongoing efforts to improve the health of Coastal Mississippians, and we are excited about being a part of the upcoming changes in healthcare access,” says Dr. Sanford. When the Sanfords are not practicing family medicine, they are usually enjoying the beach and outdoors, visiting Disney, scuba diving (each person has scuba dived for more than 15 years), reading voraciously and enjoying theater. “Our life focus is on family, so it is a natural extension of our personalities to apply this to patient care as well,” says Dr. Sanford. The Sanfords are based in D’Iberville and Gulfport. If you are searching for a primary care provider, call 228-822-6456 to schedule an appointment or visit wearememorial.com to learn more.

Do you have a thyroid problem? HERE’S HOW TO TELL

BY DR. PHILIP LEVIN

E

veryone has his or her own energy level. We’ve all known people who eat a lot and never gain weight, or, conversely, eat little but easily put on pounds. Perhaps you’ve known those who seem to jitter around and others who move like sloths. While a myriad of factors influence how we act, from genetics to psychology, the hormones that regulate our metabolism come from our thyroid. Sitting in your neck, just below the bony bump (the hyoid bone), you can feel the thyroid gland as a soft, symmetrical swelling along your windpipe. When it gets diseased, it might swell, which is called a goiter, or develop lumps. Approximately 20 million people in the U.S. have thyroid disease, which is eight times more common in women than in men. The thyroid gland regulates your metabolic rate with two hormones, named T3 and T4. Through instructions from your pituitary, the gland produces just the right amount of these hormones to regulate how much energy your cells burn. Too much, and it causes hyperthyroidism; too little, and the disease is termed hypothyroidism. Either one can be deadly, although in general, these

84

December 2021

diseases take months to years to evolve. Symptoms of hyperthyroidism include a fast heartbeat, unintended weight loss, heat intolerance and anxiety. Most patients will report trouble sleeping, changes in libido, fatigue and loose bowels. Physically, the eyes tend to “bug out,” hands tremble and sweating increases. You might notice swelling in your neck, the goiter developing, as the thyroid enlarges while producing too much hormone. In contrast, hypothyroidism slows you down. Weight gain, thinning hair, slower heart rates, depression, fatigue and constipation are common symptoms. The condition may present with dry skin, a puffy face and impaired memory. Again, the thyroid can enlarge, this time as it unsuccessfully tries to make more hormone. Although thyroid disease most commonly occurs without risk factors, in many cases, other family members have had it, too. Some medical conditions predispose someone for thyroid problems, such as diabetes, lupus and rheumatoid arthritis. Those who’ve had radiation in their neck for cancer, or as children for thymus swelling, also are at higher risk. One in 4,000 infants are born with nonfunctioning thyroids. Your thyroid requires iodine to

make its hormones. Most of the iodine in our diets comes from fish. The other main source in America is iodized salt. I strongly recommend that when you buy salt for your home, be sure and get iodized; it costs and tastes the same. It’s rare to get too much iodine, but possible — especially in certain medications. While checking thyroid function is easy with a simple blood test, it’s not one of the usual screening tests and must be specially ordered. If the blood levels show abnormalities, follow up tests include a thyroid scan or ultrasound. Hyperthyroid patients are treated with anti-thyroid drugs, radioactive iodine or surgical removal of the thyroid. In cases of low thyroid function, patients must take thyroid replacement pills for the rest of their lives. Fortunately, they’re quite inexpensive. If you’re worried about your thyroid, ask your health care provider to check your levels. A properly functioning thyroid will give you the right amount of energy while keeping your mind sharp and your body trim. Dr. Philip L. Levin is a retired emergency medicine specialist in Gulfport. Be your own best health advocate W

here my heart was concerned, I thought I’d held up my end of the bargain. I’ve always been aware that my faulty aortic valve needed regular monitoring. When I was 8, I’d undergone balloon valvuloplasty to widen my stiff, narrowing valve, and while I had only a vague grasp of what was done and why, I understood its importance. So even in adulthood, I didn’t skip cardiologist visits. As a military spouse, who was sometimes stationed in unfamiliar places for six months or fewer, I still underwent the required tests every year or two. For more than 15 years, the doctors I saw didn’t volunteer much information, and I didn’t ask many questions. After all, no news must be good news, right? My assumptions seemed validated by a cardiologist visit in 2017, while my husband and I were living in Charlotte. I went through all the familiar rigamarole, along with some tests that were new to me, and the doctor had me feeling positive about the state of my heart.

When we moved to the Coast in 2018, it was time for another checkup. The same tests were ordered, and I’d expected the same result. But about a week later, a call came alerting me that my aortic stenosis probably would require surgery.

86

December 2021

BY JENNIFER GENTILE

I’m ashamed to admit that the next thing I did was Google aortic stenosis. I knew my valve didn’t function properly, but embarrassingly little about why. A catheter procedure was ordered in advance of openheart surgery. When I awoke afterward, I learned that my valve was in such sorry shape that the surgeon didn’t feel comfortable sending me home. My mind reeled; how could I not know this? Had I not done what I was supposed to? My main takeaway from the experience was to be a more engaged patient. Pay attention to your body, and don’t dismiss things that seem off. If you aren’t satisfied with a diagnosis or treatment plan, get a second opinion. I’m no longer shy about asking for further explanation or for something to be checked. Ultimately, you must be your own best health advocate. If you have been diagnosed with a condition, make sure you understand it, its implications and your role in managing it. Understand how your health insurance works. Take advantage of preventative care, which is offered for free under many plans. Don’t assume that showing up for appointments is where your responsibility ends. If you got tested and don’t hear anything within a reasonable timeframe, follow up. The same goes for your loved ones. Chances are, if it hasn’t happened already, you’ll need to speak on another’s behalf in a medical capacity. Don’t hesitate to voice your thoughts or observations. Something that may seem trivial may be illuminating — or indeed, life-saving — when shared with a medical professional. And definitely keep an eye on your heart. I feel fortunate that mine has been under such scrutiny. If everyone’s heart were watched as closely, we would lose far fewer people to cardiac-related conditions, which often go undetected. As it stands, someone dies every 36 seconds from cardiovascular disease. It remains the leading cause of death across demographics. If you experience symptoms such as shortness of breath, chest pain or numbness or weakness in your extremities, don’t delay in discussing them with your doctor. Taking care of your physical wellbeing, while inconvenient at times, is the ultimate act of self-care. Empower yourself with knowledge, and be your own biggest champion. You and your health are worth it. Jennifer Gentile is contributing writer and editor with Gulf Coast Woman Magazine. Reach her at jen@gulfcoastwomanmagazine.com.

Maintain your health,

good cheer this holiday Staying healthy during the holidays — oh, the struggle! Everyone feels overwhelmed by the pressure to be a social butterfly and purchase the perfect gifts for their loved ones. Sound familiar? The holidays are the busiest time of year for most people, which can make it hard to stick to your health and wellness goals. The holidays are considered the season of giving and thinking of others, so it can be way too easy to lose yourself in the fray. Stress can easily get you down, and ruin what’s supposed to be the most wonderful time of the year, but you don’t have to let it overpower your holiday cheer. Here are some tips and ideas to help you maintain good health and wellness during the holiday season.

CREATE A YOGA OR MEDIATION RETREAT DAY

Take a true break from the hectic rush of the holidays, gather some of your friends and family and choose a day that you have nothing else on your calendar. Dedicate some space in your home for your retreat; it can be as a simple as a corner in room. Include fresh flowers, serene music, essential oils and candles and dedicate yourselves to getting grounded.

PRACTICE SELF-CONTROL WITH FOOD

The holidays are filled with cookies,

88

December 2021

muffins, cakes and countless other temptations. A lot of people pull out their elastic-waisted stretchy pants from the back of their closets so they can eat sweets and delicious foods to their hearts’ content. However, leading a healthy lifestyle is only effective if you stick to it all the time — even during the holidays. Eating healthy during the holidays and practicing self-control, especially when you’re constantly surrounded by an assortment of your favorite treats, can be difficult. My favorite tip: Don’t let a holi-day turn into a holi-week or holi-month. Having said that, there’s nothing wrong with mindfully having a treat or two in moderation.

GET PLENTY OF SLEEP

Like “final exam” anxiety, “holiday” anxiety is real, and it can be worsened by a lack of proper sleep. Sleep deprivation is a major cause for concern during the hustle and bustle of the holiday season. Most adults require an average of seven to nine hours of sleep for their brains to function normally. Of course, the amount of sleep required varies from person to person. Getting a good night’s sleep is key to staying healthy all year round, and during the holiday season, it ensures you have enough energy for all of the social events and activities that fill up your calendar. Otherwise, that holiday burnout just might hit you like a ton of bricks—and fast. Enjoy quality time with loved ones Making time to visit friends and relatives is exactly what the holiday

BY KAROL BRANDT

season is all about. While it can be exhausting to try to make time for every single person in your life, even a simple phone call or Christmas greeting is enough to brighten up another person’s mood and let them know that you’re thinking of them. You might even notice that the more you do this, the more others will return the favor.

PLAN AHEAD

One of the most important holiday wellness tips you can follow is to plan ahead so you can stay on top of your errands and your to-do list. Planning ahead and getting your holiday shopping done early can help you avoid the stress of having to brave the hordes of last-minute shoppers. You can feel satisfied knowing that all your holiday shopping and preparations are done well ahead of schedule and you can just sit back, relax and enjoy the season. I wish you all a very happy, healthy holiday season filled with family, friends, love and cheer.

FOOD NETWORK CHAMPION RENEE LORANGER REALIZES DREAM OF OPENING OWN BUSINESS BY JENNIFER GENTILE

A

fter reaching the finals in the Food Network’s Halloween Baking Championship last year, Renee Loranger knew she could get at least that far again. In 2020, the Waveland resident finished in the top three, and she returned to the show, which aired Sept. 13 to Oct. 25, to face eight other contestants. The last challenge was to create a 24-inch tiered cake based on the “camp killer” theme, and Loranger created a devil’s food confection with sour cherry filling, hazelnut buttercream and hazelnut fuillutine crunch. Contestants raced against the clock to finish their masterpieces, and Loranger never entered any challenge overly confident. “Anything can happen,” she says, “and it just takes one mistake to send you home.” But Loranger withstood the pressure, and the season finale saw her shed happy tears as she won a $25,000 prize and the title of Halloween Baking Champion. “To get picked the first time was amazing, but to get to come back was beyond” she says. “My first thought when I won was that my family and friends would be so proud of me and that my town that was so supportive the first time around would be so excited.” The California native always wanted to be an actress, but to pay the bills, she

90

December 2021

took a job in baking and loved how creative it could be. She learned on the job and decided to stick with it, teaching herself and acquiring skills by trial and error. “I bake things I would want to eat,” Loranger says. “If I don’t think it tastes good, I won’t serve it. I bake with my heart.” She admits to being insecure at times because she wasn’t classically trained. However, feedback she received on the show last year has helped Loranger overcome any negative thinking. “(Judge) Zac Young said I was an excellent pastry chef, and I should not doubt myself,” she says. “It stuck with me and gave me more confidence.” For 20 years, Loranger worked for a casino, and in 2012, she was promoted to executive pastry chef. When the pandemic hit and business slowed, she was let go from her job — but the setback allowed her to pursue her dream of opening her own bakery. “I decided that it was a sign of something bigger that was meant to be and that it was time to take a plunge because I had nothing to lose,” she says. “I didn’t give up, and I kept moving forward every day, reaching for my goals.” Due to that persistence, Loranger is now the proud owner of Sugar Pop Baking Co. in Waveland, which

opened on Oct. 26 inside the Ground Zero Museum. The shop specializes in customorder cakes and wedding cakes but offers pastries, cupcakes, breakfast pastries and more. “I would love for this little business on Coleman to bring back Coleman Avenue,” she says. “I would love to do more competitions on Food Network, and, if I’m really dreaming big, to have my own show or host a show. And I would love to see many Sugar Pops across the country!”

HOW I BUILT MY BUSINESS: SHARON WEEKS Success requires dedication, hard work and so much more. I have been manager of Grant's for Her for almost nine years and owner/manager since July of 2018. In the beginning, I depended heavily on dedication and hard work, and at night and on days off, I searched for ways to do more. I quickly began advertising in magazines and online, producing ads that displayed my high-end clothing, jewelry and accessories, and I began using Facebook and Instagram to reach my growing list of customers. I offer free shipping to my out-of-town clients and my local clients if they can’t make it into the shop. Grants for Her occupies a building that is part of Mary Mahoney’s Restaurant. I recognize the importance of displaying my wares attractively and creatively in windows, and I try to appeal to men and women. We have become one of the premier places where husbands and boyfriends shop, knowing that gifts from our boutique will make their loved ones happy. My daughter, Shelby, is part owner of Grants for Her. She lives in Los Angeles and runs a fashion company that she owns, but we confer on many decisions. She travels with me to New York to carefully select our merchandise. This has been one of our lifelong dreams, owning a ladies’ boutique together where we can be creative and innovative while dressing the ladies of the Gulf Coast and beyond in the best brands and styles we can find. We love what we do, and I think that shows in the way we present ourselves — from the window displays to the shopping experience we offer our customers daily. Special events and trunk shows are our bread and butter, making us who we are. We love inviting some of our favorite designers to the shop to meet our customers and share their stories and inspiration for their latest collections. Our designers come to Biloxi from New York, Italy, California, Texas and Tennessee to help Grants for Her present their unique, high-end clothing and jewelry to our Mississippi Gulf Coast customers. Special events are a special way to mingle with our customers and offer a little something extra — refreshments, entertainment and a special gift. These events also allow us to support other local small businesses that supply catering, sweets, florals, etc. I strive to make my customer’s shopping experience a very personal one, keeping in mind it’s the little things that make a big difference. Today, I rely on all of these strategies, but dedication

and hard work — and a passion for fashion — are the fundamentals that enabled me to launch a small business nine years ago and succeed. Sharon Weeks is owner/manager of Grant's for Her in Biloxi. Reach her at sbweeks@aol.com.

The follies of flood insurance HERE’S WHY YOU SHOULD READ THE FINE PRINT

BY ANGELYN TREUTEL ZERINGUE

People often ask me what flood insurance does and does not cover. Flood Insurance is a very valuable coverage in our area because even a small flood in your home can cause over $50,000 in damage. A flood is water that rises from overflow, rain runoff or erosion. If your hot water heater drains water throughout your home, this is not considered flooding, and you would need to file your claim on your home insurance. But if the water enters your home from outside, there is generally coverage under a flood insurance policy. Areas that are prone to flooding require that homes and commercial buildings be raised for protection. If your home or commercial building is raised, you will save money on the cost of your flood insurance. Most items in the raised section are covered, including the building and foundation, the electrical and plumbing, the HVAC system and the appliances. Coverage also is available

98

December 2021

for debris removal and flood damage cleanup. Personal belongings in your home are covered separately on a flood policy, and you will need to verify that your policy includes the coverage. Contents are settled at actual cash value at the time of a claim, so depreciation will be applied during the claim for your personal belongings. Unfortunately, for a raised structure, items located below the raised floor generally are not protected by your flood insurance policy. So, anything stored in a crawlspace or any enclosure below the elevated floor would not be covered. Other exclusions for flood insurance include: • Any items stored outside of a building, such as plants, trees, fencing or pools • Mold or mildew damage that could have been mitigated • Damage below ground, including septic or drains • Temporary housing following a flood loss • Expenses associated with loss of business income • Vehicles (coverage may be

available under your auto insurance) Most flood policies include coverage for cost of compliance up to $30,000, to be used for flood mitigation or debris removal. You will need to check with your agent and review your policy to verify if you have this coverage available and the process for making a claim. Many private flood markets are becoming available in our area and are offering enhanced coverages, including replacement cost on contents, temporary housing and lost business income. Check with your insurance agent for your options. Anywhere it rains, it can flood. Please investigate this valuable coverage even if your area has never flooded before. Indexed universal life insurance — What it is, and why you should consider it

Most people have heard of term and whole life insurance but are unfamiliar with indexed universal life insurance (IUL). Here are some key points about an IUL and why I often recommend them to my clients. • Like whole life, an IUL is a type of permanent life insurance. • Unlike whole life, policy expenses are fully disclosed. • A typical IUL policy is overfunded, meaning you pay more into the The Hancock Chamber Business Women’s Leadership Roundtable policy than is required with the goal of growing your money. was founded in 2006 to offer professional women in Hancock • An IUL is funded with after-tax dollars. home & family

Your how-to for a stress-free holiday It’s the most wonderful time of the year; unfortunately, it also can be the most stressful. There’s family and friends to visit, parties to host and gifts to purchase. Before you know it, the season you looked forward to has become more of a chore than a joyous occasion. Don’t let the pressures of the holidays stop you from enjoying this special time. Here are five tips to help get you through the holiday season stress-free: DON’T EXPECT PERFECTION.

The bulk of your anxiety can be eliminated if you understand that the unexpected will happen. I get it; you were hoping to send out a beautiful family Christmas card to everyone, but your child won’t stop making silly faces. It’s okay. That gives your family card character.

REMEMBER TO TAKE A BREAK.

Your calendar may fill up fast with all things holiday, but don’t forget to schedule some time out for yourself to rest. Doing so will allow you to be more relaxed and in better spirits.

KEEP YOUR DAILY ROUTINE.

If you usually take time in the morning for a workout, stick with it. Don’t skip on your healthy habits just because you have guests in town or additional obligations. Maintaining your fitness, mental and physical, will help you handle the holiday stress better — and balance out that extra piece of pie.

DON’T HESITATE TO ASK FOR HELP.

Instead of trying to do everything by yourself, ask for help. Your guests usually will be happy to pitch in, and it helps them feel included.

IT’S OK TO SAY “NO.”

Don’t feel obligated to say “yes” to everything and everyone. While you want to accept every invitation, it’s unrealistic to think you can do it all. Be selective with your time, and recognize that it’s fine to say “no” when you can’t attend. The holidays should be fun and festive — not stressful. Remember to take time to celebrate and enjoy your loved ones. Ultimately, nothing else matters.

Make Christmas merrier BY STAYING ORGANIZED

December is by far the busiest month of the year for most of us, with so many extra things to do — extra cooking, BY MELANIE JONES extra shopping and extra socializing to name a few. All the “extras” can quickly make your home and your calendar feel out of control. My Christmas gift to you is some tips for managing all these “extras” — making your Christmas merrier and less stressful. • Purchase a planner and schedule out your entire month as early as possible. You can go online and find a large number of Christmas planners that cover everything you need to have a stressfree month. If you don’t want to order a special planner, a regular planner will work just fine. Remember that the sooner you begin, the easier it will be. The first thing you should put on your calendar is a day to do your Christmas cards, so make sure you have addresses and stamps!

102

December 2021

• Next, let’s schedule some shopping. Like many people, you may love hitting multiple stores in search of the perfect gifts. There’s definitely something special about the experience, so if this is how you shop, make sure to create a checklist of people to buy for. Write their gift next to their name and schedule a day and time to shop, along with where you will go and the amount you will spend. This will save you lots of time and make your shopping a bit easier. If you don’t have time to go shopping, and want to do it all online, make your list of people to buy for and knock out a few each night while in bed. • Another option for online shopping is using gift apps. My family is very large and spread out, so we like using Giftser. It allows each person to make a wish list, and it even gives you the link to the store, making shopping super simple! • Make sure you have plenty of wrapping paper and accessories, along with a wrapping paper organizer. You can find these at Walmart, Target, or even online. Set up a wrapping station

in your home and wrap each present the day it arrives so you don’t have so many gifts to wrap at once. I promise when Christmas comes, you will be glad you did this. • When you schedule parties, potlucks and other event in your calendar, write down what you will wear and what you will bring for each occasion. If your schedule doesn’t allow time for making a dish, order some favorite items from a popular local restaurant. You’ll certainly be the star of the party! I hope these tips help you have a happier, less chaotic holiday. From my family to yours, we wish you a very Merry Christmas and a Happy New Year! tips for avoiding caregiver stress this season

Even under the best of circumstances, the holidays can be frantic. When you multiply it with the added stress of having to be caregiver for a family member with special needs, such as dementia, this time of year can be overwhelming. Here are some tips to help you avoid hitting your maximum stress level during the holidays. 1. HAVE REALISTIC EXPECTATIONS

It is important to be realistic in your expectations and make helpful adjustments to your plans. Realize that the perfection that you see in your favorite holiday movie or soap opera had a whole production staff to create it. If you are a full-time caregiver, you may not even have time to decorate the house or prepare food, and that is OK. Maybe just a small, pre-decorated tree or plant is enough to make you feel festive. Also, it is helpful for your family to realize that it’s unrealistic to expect a caregiver to prepare or host a major feast for the family, even if that is how your family always has celebrated. That brings us to the next point: If the family still wants the feast and festivities, you should ask another family member to step up and provide it.

2. DELEGATE AS MANY RESPONSIBILITIES AS POSSIBLE

Do not be shy about telling your family, including children, that you have caregiving responsibilities and need their help, especially during the holidays. Get over any feelings that you may have about not wanting to bother other family members or your children. It would be helpful if one of your family members took over the hosting duties, which would allow you and your special-needs family member an opportunity to just visit. Another option could be to allow the family to come to your house, but be sure to make the meal a potluck and specify up front what time would be best for the guests to come and to go so you can have minimal schedule disruption. Do not think that you must do everything yourself anymore, and do not let guilty feelings trick you into thinking you are letting your loved ones down if you cannot provide the same experience of past holidays. It is time to

106

December 2021

BY KATHY BROWN VAN ZUTPHEN

consider the quality of the time spent together, even if it is limited, and not the quantity of the people or experience.

3. LIMIT YOUR SOCIAL COMMITMENTS

It is helpful, especially as a family members’ dementia increases, to limit social commitments to help reduce confusion and stress. While church members may be helpful with providing meals or respite care, you may need to limit participation with the holiday activities you enjoyed in the past. Reducing your commitments will help alleviate unnecessary additional stress. It may mean you must limit activities to only the immediate family, and if the immediate family can provide you with short-term respite care, that would probably be the best holiday gift you could receive.

4. REDUCE YOUR GIFTS OR SHOPPING

Some people love shopping for gifts in a big crowd, but that may be unrealistic if you have extensive caregiver duties. Certainly, family members with limited mobility have additional challenges navigating crowds. If you can get respite care to help you, perhaps getting out of the house and enjoying a little holiday spirit would be good for your soul. However you accomplish your shopping, you may have to minimize it or ask friends and family for help.

5. TREAT THE CAREGIVER

Your family and friends must consider that your attention and free time may be limited, and the perfect gift for you may be something that will make you comfortable and your life a little easier. Prepared foods, services like cleaning or baskets of necessities may be the best presents. Certainly, any gift that can take a task off your plate would be appreciated.

SIX TIPS FOR NAVIGATING HOMEWORK TIME

BY ERIN GIBSON

As students move throughout elementary school and toward middle school, the role of the parent evolves — especially when it comes to homework. It’s critical that parents limit their involvement in homework but don’t back away completely. One of the most common questions we receive from parents at Huntington is how much or how little parents should be helping with homework. While much depends on the student and his or her specific challenges and needs, we advise parents to encourage independence.

HERE ARE SOME TIPS TO HELP YOU DETERMINE THE ROLE YOU SHOULD PLAY DURING HOMEWORK TIME: 1. Put your child in charge. Ask which assignments your child wants to work on first, but let your child take the lead. Make sure your child is clear on what he or she needs to do (by reading directions together if needed or having your child describe assignments to you), but do not get overly involved. Instead, be on standby for help. As your child moves through elementary school, make sure they begin to take full ownership of their school work and grades. 2. Build time management skills. At a young age, children have a harder time using their time effectively and wisely, so it’s important for parents to establish a homework routine that involves planning out all work sessions carefully and prioritizing homework assignments from hardest to easiest, from most to least involved. Time management is one of the keys to homework success, especially as

assignments become more involved and difficult. 3. Help your child develop a solid organizational system. Good organization goes hand in hand with time management, and students who are both organized and good managers of time perform better in school. Help your child adopt a system of organization that is easy to maintain. Keep inbox trays or folders in a central place where your child can drop papers for you and file graded homework that’s no longer needed. Being organized will help your child avoid distractions that can cause issues during homework time. 4. Empower your child to do things his or her way. Your child might not always do things the way you would, and that’s okay. If your child prefers to study with music and snacks and his or her sessions seem to be productive, that is fine. Some children might need a break after school before diving into homework while others might want to get right to it. 5. Get an idea from your child’s teachers how much homework is reasonable. They can guide you on what to expect as far as amount of homework and time it should take. They also can share signs to watch for that your child is

spinning his or her wheels. Not all work time is productive, after all. Monitor how your child works and how productive his or her time is. 6. Teach your child to ask for help. As you build homework independence and hold yourself back from stepping in and making homework your responsibility, it’s important to remind your child to be his or her own advocate. Your child needs to be self-aware enough to identify when help is needed. When he or she doesn’t understand homework, tell your child to ask questions in class and reach out to the teacher. If homework is a daily stressor that causes your child significant anxiety, there may be something else going on behind the scenes. As subjects become more difficult and school becomes more challenging, these problems are likely to grow. Take appropriate action to pinpoint the problem and develop a targeted program to help your child develop homework independence and become the best student possible.
