Mississippi Gulf Coast Community College champions statewide AI collaboration

In a groundbreaking move that could set a precedent for the nation, the Mississippi Artificial Intelligence Network (MAIN) has emerged as a visionary collaboration, bringing together Mississippi community colleges, universities, and industry giants Intel Corporation and Dell Technologies. MGCCC is at the forefront of this initiative, playing a pivotal role in shaping the future of artificial intelligence (AI) education and workforce development in the state. MAIN, propelled by funding from AccelerateMS, signifies the first statewide coalition of higher education institutions in the nation dedicated to advancing AI awareness, training, and implementation. Spearheading the alliance is Ryan Miller, Executive Director of AccelerateMS, who emphasizes the critical need for Mississippi to address the burgeoning impact of AI on the workforce. “Acknowledging the inevitable job transformations predicted by AI adoption, MAIN is committed to positioning Mississippi as a leader in the AI industry, creating new job opportunities, and driving economic growth,” Miller said. Dr. Mary S. Graham, MGCCC president, underlines the transformative potential of AI, asserting that it revolutionizes various sectors from education to healthcare, becoming the driving force behind innovation and progress.

AccelerateMS funding will empower MAIN partners, including MGCCC, to establish AI labs, recruit students, and launch awareness campaigns. The coalition is currently in the process of hiring a project director to coordinate partnerships and implement AI curriculum statewide. Intel Corporation, a key industry partner, is at the forefront of this initiative. Through its AI for Workforce program, Intel provides initial AI curriculum and faculty training, ensuring relevance in the rapidly evolving AI landscape. Additionally, Dell Technologies has committed to providing AI-ready technology, bridging the gap between education and real-world jobs. This collaboration aims to equip students with the essential skills needed for the future workforce, contributing to Mississippi’s position as a hub for advanced technology learning. Mississippi’s commitment to a unified statewide strategy in AI education, workforce readiness, and ecosystem development is drawing national attention. MAIN’s partnership with industry leaders and educational institutions positions Mississippi to lead the charge in cultivating an AI talent pipeline, fostering economic diversification, and creating a legacy of prosperity for generations to come. MGCCC, as a vital participant in MAIN, is helping shape a future where AI innovation meets educational excellence, laying the foundation for a prosperous technological era in the heart of the South.

“Recognizing AI’s ability to imitate human decision-making and problem-solving, we envision limitless possibilities for the state,” For more information on MGCCC’s programs related Graham said. “Mississippi, strategically to articifial intelligence (AI) visit: positioned, is poised to embrace AI as a catalyst mgccc.edu/ engineering-mathematics-data-science-it for unprecedented growth and prosperity.” www.gcwmultimedia.com

'It's our time' 47 YEARS AFTER MEETING, KIM JUZANG AND PRESTON LOGAN TIE A KNOT ON THEIR LOVE STORY BY JENNIFER GENTILE

When 17-year-old Kim Juzang traveled to Natchez with her best friend, Wanda, she had no idea how profoundly her life was about to change. Now 64, Juzang remembers arriving at Wanda’s cousins’ house while everyone was sleeping — everyone except an attractive young man who came to the door and pulled back the curtain to see who was there. “I was in love the second he smiled at me,” she says of the boy, who turned out to be Wanda’s first cousin, Preston Logan. “He told me that he liked me right away.” Despite that immediate chemistry, a relationship proved hard to maintain when they could only meet sporadically. “When we were both 21 years old, we finally tried to start our relationship, but he couldn’t do the long-distance relationship,” Juzang says. “So, at that point, our lives happily went in two different directions.”

REKINDLING THEIR ROMANCE

Sadly, Logan lost his wife of 26 years to breast cancer in 2014. He did some dating — and then Wanda disclosed that his former flame, Juzang, had periodically asked about him. “Unbeknownst to me, Preston also kept the memory of me near,” Juzang says. “He asked permission to contact me, and he was pleased to hear that I was open to talking with him. The rest is history.” The couple was engaged within a few months and married by the end of 2023. Their Oct. 7 nuptials sealed a union several decades in the making. “I love Preston’s kind heart; he is always willing to help someone in need,” Juzang says of her spouse, who works as an independent contractor and owns a trucking company. “He is a

18

February 2024

great dad and papa. He is family-oriented, and he enjoys family gatherings. I have always known Preston to be a very hard worker, and he provides for the needs of his family.” The admiration is mutual, as Logan praises his wife’s warm, welcoming personality. “She is a beautiful and loving person inside and out,” he says of Juzang, who is an administrative assistant with CBF Partners LLC and works at NASA Stennis Space Center. “She never meets a stranger, and she is kind to everyone.”

TOGETHER AT LAST

To those who feel discouraged on the relationship front, Juzang urges them to keep the faith. They may not end up with the person they’ve crushed on for 47 years, she adds, but a special love story can happen for anyone. “We believe God made sure we were always connected to each other in some way, whether through dreams or through his family members or friends keeping us updated on each other’s lives,” Juzang says. “Once, we literally bumped into each other at a football game while we were both looking down trying to find our seats.” The two avid football fans now enjoy watching games together — especially Alabama — as well as gardening and spending time with family. Preston has five children and six grandchildren, and his new wife is excited for what the future holds with her longtime love at her side. “We get to be a part of living out the rest of our lives together, sharing family activities, watching our grandchildren grow up,” Juzang says. “We were brought together, finally, and will never let each other go. This is our time.”

humility

W

ith Liz Corso Joachim, what you see is what you get. Despite an office brimming with awards, certificates and commendations, the head of Corso, Inc., is more likely to compliment someone else than vice versa. Staying humble and transparent, in fact, is a hallmark of her leadership style. “You’ve got to not think about yourself. You’ve got to think about what can you do to help others,” says Joachim, leader of

the family owned-and-operated company located on Caillavet Street in Biloxi. “And that’s what my philosophy has been. I never meet a stranger.” As a boss, Joachim embodies the same can-do spirit that her father displayed when he founded the business in 1924. Frank P. Corso immigrated to the United States from Italy, and with a third-grade education and limited English skills, he made a living transporting and selling candy bars via his bicycle.

As head of Corso, Inc., Liz Joachim has built a legacy of success, philanthropy His venture grew into a successful wholesale operation, which distributed everything from cigars and candies to paper bags and castor oil. As Corso marks its 100th anniversary this year, the company’s future appears secure in the hands of Joachim’s three children and grandson. However, she is not one to take success or loyalty for granted. “Never put yourself so high or so above any of the employees or customers,” Joachim says, citing the most important

lesson the job has taught her. “And always treat everybody as you would want to be treated.”

EARNING RESPECT

When Joachim inherited the company upon the death of her parents and two brothers, she was reluctant to return. At the time, she hadn’t been involved in the family business since getting married, and she loved running a gift shop she’d opened down the road from Mary Mahoney’s. Soon after taking over, she faced her first challenge when a couple of her main employees quit because they refused to work for a woman. “I just told myself that, ‘OK, you’re coming into this business, and you’re going to have to be just like everybody here; you’re not above them,’” Joachim says. “You want them to respect you as the owner of this business, but you want them to realize that you’re not afraid of getting your hands dirty to help them. I loaded trucks. I delivered. I did everything when I came back. I never had a snooty nose — never believed in that.” No task was too menial, and the company’s workforce soon saw that their leader put service above self. She also was determined to learn about the products and be known to Corso’s clientele. “But one thing, though — we never lost any customers when I came back in,” Joachim says. “I think that was a blessing for the employees to see too, that the customers didn’t care who ran it; they just wanted their products.”

GIVING BACK

Joachim’s leadership wasn’t confined to Corso’s walls, as evidenced by the dozens of plaques and trophies she’s accumulated. Some of the distinctions she’s earned include Biloxi Outstanding Citizen, First Lady of Biloxi, Biloxi Mother of the Year, the Gulf Coast Chamber of Commerce’s Pat Santucci Sprit of the Gulf Coast Award, American Red Cross’s Humanitarian of the Year award and the MGCCC Sam Owen Award. She also served as the first-ever female commodore of the Biloxi Yacht Club and as president of the Biloxi Chamber, Biloxi Rotary Club, Mississippi Wholesale Distributors Association, the National

22

February 2024

Conference of State Housing Boards and several other organizations. The Salvation Army, Peoples Bank Board, Merit Health Biloxi, Biloxi First, the Gulf Coast Carnival Association, the Ohr O’Keefe Museum and the March of Dimes are just some of the organizations that have benefited from her time and talents. “It was just, you know, shocking to me and flattering — very flattering,” Joachim says of her many accolades. “And what’s been interesting, I think, (is) that just about every board that I’ve served on, from state boards to local boards, I’ve ended up not only just being on the board, but being elected chairman. I always feel like there’s got to be other people more deserving.”

A GENERATIONAL LEGACY

Whenever Joachim decides to throttle back, which doesn’t appear likely anytime soon, her family members realize they have large shoes to fill. “She is a ball of energy; she never stops,” says Joachim’s daughter, Elisa Radich, who works alongside her at Corso. “Even in her 80s, she could outrun you, or me or

probably any of us here. She’s fun, she’s loving, but she’s intense — and she gets stuff done.” Although all three of Joachim’s children are now involved in the business, Radich says that for a while, her mom was making it work with just herself and one of her sons. According to the proud daughter, the reputation and relationships Joachim built over the years have reinforced the good name her grandfather established. “She just shines and sparkles,” Radich says of her mom. “She doesn’t really love attention, but she appreciates it.” Joachim’s grandson, John Jack Joachim IV, grew up working in the business and is eager to carry forward his family’s legacy. While staying focused on the customer base is important to the budding leader, he also wants to follow in his grandmother’s charitable footsteps. “She’s been very philanthropic throughout my life,” he says, and the way she gives back to community has always been very admirable to me.” Corso has come a long way since its beginnings, now servicing from state line to state line and as far north as Columbus, Mississippi. Nonetheless, Joachim’s grandson sees plenty of potential for expansion and innovation. “I hope we continue to grow for another 100 years,” he says. “That’d be really cool, especially under my tenure, to see how far I can grow it and push it.” In the meantime, he couldn’t ask for a better mentor than his grandmother, who has set an example of selfless dedication. While not always pleasant or easy, she says, the journey is always worthwhile. “You just have to have a goal in mind of what you want to do with your life, what you want to be, and then you don’t walk over anybody or hurt anybody to get that position that you would like,” Joachim says. “Just be yourself, and always think of others. I think that’s how you get to be successful.”

Like Father, Like Daughter A Legacy Continues with Cynthia Joachim, REALTOR®

M

ost people agree that qualities like stability and reliability are important traits they want in people with whom they do business. Others will tell you that success breeds success — another reason for business loyalty. Such professional traits as these are the foundation of the legacy that Cynthia S. Joachim continues in her family’s name. A Biloxi native, Cynthia is a broker associate with Coldwell Banker Alfonso Realty, where she has been a $1 million producer. She concentrates in commercial property, as one might imagine when considering her upbringing in the family businesses — including three hardware stores, two hotels and a real estate brokerage. The real estate vein runs especially deep, considering her ancestors flourished in the post-Civil War New Orleans real estate market. Records show several commercial and residential rental properties owned by Joachim Brothers Real Estate. More recent ancestors did the same when they came to Ocean Springs, owning a boarding house for tourists, a building and supply company and the city’s first water works. For the last 60-some years, the Joachim legacy has added new chapters, written by the late Harry J. Joachim and now his daughter, Cynthia. Already a success in real estate, especially among the many professional associations for which he volunteered, Harry did as much to boost the profession as he did for consumer protection for those in the real estate market. With a studious and attentive Cynthia there to witness, and then share in, those efforts, the family name became synonymous with Gulf Coast real estate. Like her father, Cynthia served as president of the Biloxi-Ocean Springs Association of REALTORS®. Both served as president of the Mississippi Association of REALTORS® as well.

Legacy builders: Harry J. Joachim, father US Joachim and brother Mark G. Joachim welcoming new inventory to their hardware store, 1948.

Father Harry always maintained that the public would be better served by better trained real estate practitioners, so he opened the first real estate school in Mississippi and later taught for the Mississippi Association of REALTORS®. Following closely was Cynthia, who also teaches for the state association. Both were named Instructors of the Year, Cynthia four times over. Cynthia and her father both earned numerous professional designations in specific real estate fields, so both have dozens of letters after their names. Father and daughter alike are both inductees into the Mississippi REALTORS® Hall of Fame. There are many such similarities in offices, awards, stature and contribution between Cynthia and her renowned father. However, perhaps the starkest is the fact that they are both overachievers. Harry was also a highly respected real estate appraiser, while Cynthia cultivated her brokerage side especially in commercial and historic properties. Cynthia earned a law degree from the University of Mississippi School of Law and practiced law in both Mississippi and Florida. She was just recognized and celebrated for 50 years as a member of the Mississippi Bar. Later, she earned a master’s degree in business administration from Tulane

University. Harry served 18 years on the Mississippi Real Estate Commission, longer than anyone in the history of the state. During that time, Harry served as president of the Association of Real Estate License Law Officials (ARELLO), comprised of those who administer real estate license law in the U.S. and Canada. Additionally, Harry served on the U.S. Eminent Domain Commission, appointed by U.S. District Court Judge Walter L. Nixon, Jr. It’s obvious that Harry had a strong commitment to the law that Cynthia shares. Cynthia took the helm of the family brokerage in 1982 and piloted the company until she merged with longtime family friend Carlene Alfonso in 2010. Still, she continues with her love of teaching and sharing with other professionals. As a sought-after teacher and speaker, she still travels when called upon and finds time to contribute to the many organizations in which she holds an active membership. So, the Joachim legacy and family motto, Actions, not words, continues. To be certain, this chapter of this rich family legacy is being written by Cynthia Joachim.

Legacies OF THE COAST

Father and daughter also were named REALTOR® of the Year by both the local and state association, and both served on or chaired numerous committees for the National Association of REALTORS® (NAR), including the prestigious License Law Committee. Cynthia even chaired the convention committee for NAR, which is still the largest Trade Association in the United States, and at that time had 20,000+ attendees.

John continued working at French Drug during his college breaks until he graduated pharmacy school from Ole Miss in 2002 when he became a pharmacist at French Drug. While family loyalty is strong, French Drug also owes its success to a legacy of long-time employees. Sabrina Whitehead, a 42-year employee, is Jessica’s right hand! Crystal Fulford, a 26-year employee, is a pharmacy technician. French Drug stands by their motto of community service for over 70 years. It is the reason everyone loves it. French Drug never closed during Katrina, working tirelessly even without power to fill prescriptions and allowing customers to “I owe you” so they wouldn’t go without medicine. Personal curbside service is offered by our pharmacists to the elderly for immunizations and prescription delivery. Local delivery is a hallmark service that so many elderly and ill depend on. This is what separates us as a family-owned, independent pharmacy from big chains. Our community is at the heart of French Drug.

John & Jessica purchased the store from David Lawrence in 2014, and David stayed on as a part-time pharmacist until he retired in 2020. Shortly after purchasing French Drug Company, Jessica left her job as a registered nurse to work beside John to run the family pharmacy. Jessica has completely updated and merchandises the gift shop section and runs the business side of French Drug, helping with scheduling, payroll, etc. Together John and Jessica have 3 children and 1 grandchild, Tyler’s little girl, Naomi, who is 4. Duncan Feeding the Coast for 25 years!

Her delicious, scratch-made menu features favorites like red beans and rice, fried chicken, oxtails, catfish, shrimp, gumbo, macaroni and cheese and much more. While it’s nearly impossible to name a most-popular dish, Duncan says the favorite would have to be a tie between the homemade baked macaroni and cheese and the seafood gumbo. “The mac and cheese is a secret recipe that has a thick, creamy and decadent texture, with a secret spice combination that provides a punch of flavor,” she says. “Our seafood gumbo spotlights local seafood and regional

spices. It is a meticulous layering of flavors and creole essences that come together harmoniously to provide your taste buds with a culinary experience unlike anything you’ve ever had in your life.” Each dish is crafted with love and care using farm-fresh produce and seafood. Duncan’s talent for satisfying appetites has made Ms. Audrey’s one of the most beloved restaurants on the Coast. Its commitment to treating every guest like family has earned high praise from locals and out-of-town visitors alike, as well as inclusion in Gulf Coast Woman’s Best Places to Eat and other accolades. In addition to its exemplary Southern cuisine, Ms. Audrey’s is also constantly mindful about giving back. “We are located in the heart of the city to dedicate our time and resources to the community we serve,” Duncan says. Ms. Audrey’s not only is a dream come true for Duncan, but an enduring legacy of which she and the community can be proud.

Jack & Jeannie

Beattie J

ack and Jeannie Beattie opened their shop in Gulfport in December 1970. Jack was a natural in all that he did, and Jeannie loves color and design, so they decided to make the coast homes and businesses more beautiful. Their love for the Coast has been evident from the beginning as they entered each project with the desire to, not just sell a product, but to assume ownership of the project and have the customer and their home become a real part of their lives. Jeannie’s goal is to create a space for clients to create special memories that will last a lifetime – a space to live and to love. A legacy business, Jeannie and her son Jeff are doing projects for some of the same people she started with in the ‘70s and doing projects for the children of the first customers. In addition to home design, Jack Beattie’s House of Carpet has been fortunate to have the opportunity to work on many commercial projects, too. Yet Jeannie says one of her favorite places to work is in houses of worship for all faiths. She considers design for a place of worship a “project of love” as she attributes her special skills to a gift from God. A family business works very well if you love what you do, and Jeannie says she is very lucky to have a son, Jeff, to fall into the giant footsteps of his father. In 1987 at the age of 12, son Jeff began “running the trucks” with the workers

- meaning, he started going to job sites and helping out. When his father, Jack, got sick around 1995, Jack and Jeannie depended on him more and more to run the family business, and when Jack passed away several years later, Jeff stepped in to fill his father’s shoes. He and Jeannie have a wonderful working relationship, and Jeff has been able to expand the business. Jeff’s specialty is bathroom design and redesign, especially taking older homes’ existing bath layout and reworking them into modern and sleek areas with the latest materials and design. For over 50 years, Jack Beattie’s House of Carpet has offered high-quality, top-brand flooring of all types, window treatments and wall coverings, but believes service is their best product. The company provides installation for everything they sell, brings decades of experience to every project, and finishes the job professionally and on time.

Investing in HOPE

CADENCE BANK, OPERATION HOPE PARTNER TO BOOST FINANCIAL LITERACY, WELLBEING Here Walt Pannell, president, Gulf Coast Division at Cadence Bank, and Derrick Jackson, a certified financial coach, reflect on the origins and impact of the bank’s partnership with Operation HOPE. WHAT IS OPERATION HOPE?

Operation HOPE is the largest, on-theground financial literacy organization in the U.S., with offices in over 250 cities serving over 900 locations. Since 1992, Operation HOPE has been moving America from civil rights to “silver rights” with the mission of making free enterprise and capitalism work for the underserved, disrupting poverty for millions of low-and moderate-income youth and adults across the nation. Operation HOPE has served millions of individuals and directed billions in economic activity into disenfranchised communities — turning check-cashing customers into banking customers, renters into homeowners, small business dreamers into small business owners, minimum wage workers into living-wage consumers and uncertain disaster victims into financially empowered survivors.

HOW DID THE PARTNERSHIP FORM WITH CADENCE BANK?

Cadence Bank has been working with Operation HOPE since 2017 when Cadence launched its first pilot HOPE Inside location at one of its Memphis, Tennessee, branches. Cadence has added six additional HOPE Inside locations since July 2021, including one in Gulfport, and has committed nearly $1.5 million to support Operation HOPE’s financial literacy programs. Some Cadence Bank customers need to raise their credit score before they can qualify for a mortgage or personal loan. That’s where Operation HOPE comes in. Because the HOPE Inside team collaborates within Cadence’s branches, customers and community members may speak with a banker and a HOPE financial counselor in one location. The goal is to boost their qualifications and eligibility, giving them access to better products and pricing.

34

February 2024

The services provided at HOPE Inside locations are tailored to the community’s needs and available at no cost. These include credit counseling, money management education, homeownership counseling and small-business coaching. Importantly, there are no specific qualifications customers need to meet to participate.

WHY IS FINANCIAL LITERACY ESSENTIAL FOR WOMEN IN PARTICULAR?

Financial literacy is crucial for women, as it empowers them to make informed decisions about their finances, fostering independence and security. According to a study conducted by the Global Financial Literacy Excellence Center in March 2021, nearly two-thirds of working women are behind on their retirement savings, compared to just 48 percent of men. And while about half of women are confident about their finances, only 28 percent feel empowered to act. With a strong understanding of budgeting, investing and financial planning, women can navigate economic challenges, plan for the future and build a solid financial foundation. Additionally, financial literacy allows women to break down traditional gender barriers, promoting equality in both personal and professional spheres.

WHAT HAVE BEEN THE RESULTS OF THE PARTNERSHIP THUS FAR?

By getting a better grasp on their personal finances, customers can maintain economic stability going forward. They can teach others, including friends, family and neighbors, what they’ve learned and promote a more financially empowered community. In fact, after a six-month timeframe, the average individual who goes through the Operation HOPE program may see a net savings increase of about $1,000 and a credit score increase of up to 50 points. This is critically important when you consider that financial wellbeing is among the lowest levels observed since 2016, according to the Federal Reserve’s Economic Well-Being of U.S. Households in 2022 survey. Cadence’s Gulfport location has reported (January 2023 through midNovember 2023) a total of 382 clients who have been assisted. Of this number, 77 percent, or 294 women (100 percent African American) have received services from this location. Selling starfish How Amy Hudson built her business

I

’m in the starfish-tree business, which proves that with inspiration, faith, vision, passion and perseverance, anyone can build a business around just about anything. Before I ventured into my retail, wholesale and online business of today, starfish always found a place in my home and former retail store, Flair Gifts in Bay St. Louis, which I closed in 2018 after a neck injury left me unable to work and benched me as a business owner. I swore I would never build another business to lose it again. God had other plans for me. In 2020, Flair Gifts 2.0 was founded almost by happenstance when I began making starfish trees for family and friends in the garage using leftover starfish from a project. While working in our garage that faces a well-trafficked street, I noticed ongoing wide eyes and drive-bys. People stopped to ask, “What are those? I’ve never seen one. Can I buy one?” The unbelievable interest led to artist Cissy Quinn and me hosting a 2020 Covid-friendly, pop-up art show in our front yard filled with starfish tree buyers. I then realized how inspirational the trees were to people, largely because of their symbolism of love and renewal. If a starfish arm is broken, it grows back new and whole again — a fitting metaphor for Flair’s rebirth. You can turn a hobby into a business, but you can’t turn a business into a hobby. Perks like flexibility certainly are advantageous, but the time clock never really stops as a

business owner. You must love what you do and dig in with blood, sweat and tears for years. Business ownership is like a box of chocolates; you never know what you’ll get. But it’s also much like gumbo, with different ingredients that must meld together to be good: planning, budgeting, financing, marketing, foresight, problem-solving, strong partnerships, patience, mentors, committed employees and a very supportive spouse who accepts you working at 9 p.m. during his nail-biting football game. There will be failure and many risks, hopefully calculated — like buying 10,000 starfish to ensure readily available materials throughout the global pandemic. Thankfully, that was a good call. Although I’m no Steve Jobs, who built Apple’s empire, we share the commonalities of a garage business and a dream. I’m testament to the fact that you can do it if you dream it, even if it takes a couple of tries. Amy Hudson is owner of Flair Gifts, a retail, wholesale and online starfish business featuring hand-crafted items. She may be reached at amy@shoppingwithflair. com or (228) 617-0498.

Delta Sigma Theta:

Making history through service, sisterhood BY JENNIFER GENTILE

The Coast will be awash in crimson and cream this month as more than 1,000 Delta Sigma Theta members gather in the spirit of sisterhood. The sorority’s two local alumni chapters are preparing to host the 2024 Mississippi State Cluster of the Dynamic Southern Region, which will be held Feb. 23-25 at the Mississippi Gulf Coast Coliseum and Convention Center. “State Cluster is an opportunity the learn and grow in our commitment to the sorority’s ideals,” says Angela Haynes, president of the Moss Point Alumnae Chapter. “And it’s a wonderful way to meet new sisters and spend time with sisters we have not seen in a while.” Established at Howard University on Jan. 13, 1913, Delta Sigma Theta Inc. was founded on the principles of sisterhood, scholarship, service and social action. A network of more than 1,000 chapters worldwide encompasses more than 350,000 college-educated women, who are committed to personal development and public service — primarily focused on the Black community. Although composed of predominantly Black women, the group is not exclusive to any demographic. “From voter registration to youth scholarships to county service projects across the Coast — remarkably, there isn’t a month that goes by without a Delta making a positive impact in her community,” says Cece Shabazz, communications colead with the Mississippi Gulf Coast Alumnae Chapter. “Many influential local African American women, including community and business leaders, proudly call Delta Sigma Theta Inc. their sorority. We are an army of women dedicated to a life of giving back.” At the Cluster, attendees will be treated to educational, cultural and social experiences — including business sessions, professional development opportunities, workshops and entertainment. The throwback ‘80s and ‘90s theme will add a fun element to an impactful event. “I am most looking forward to that good ole’ Delta spirit and the opportunity to learn, grow and fellowship!” says Searcy

Jamison Taylor, president of the Mississippi Gulf Coast Alumnae Chapter. “This will be the second State Cluster post-COVID, and we are excited to host the ladies of crimson and cream!” in collaboration with C.R.O.S.S. Inc. (Community Resource Organization for Service and Support), The Mississippi State Cluster service project focuses on helping Moss Point tornado victims. Attendees are invited to contribute items and funds to support ongoing local relief efforts. “But that’s not all – our presence transcends mere volunteering,” Shabazz says. “We’re set to make a substantial economic impact on the local community during our gathering.” At the local level, the sorority’s work can take many forms — for instance, donations and volunteer services to help local food kitchens and other outreaches, or even seminars to teach an underserved community about topics like life insurance, investing and home ownership. Some of the MGCAC chapter’s recurring activities include youth development and enrichment programs for young women ages 11-18, the DSTee Gulf Tournament fundraiser (the only female-sponsored tournament on the Gulf Coast), the Adopta-School Reading Program, a community health fair, monthly support of black-owned businesses via Paint the Business RED and the Natalie Hamlar Mason scholarship awards for high school students. The Moss Point Chapter is also making a difference with projects such as providing supplies and donations to AIDS House, the Bras Across the River event, mentoring programs for middle- and high-school girls aimed at academic, social and character development, and scholarships for local high school graduates. Easy ways to infuse love, functionality, and design

Turning your home into a warm, inviting retreat that also functions well doesn’t require an overhaul. With some simple tweaks, you can infuse character, comfort and style into your living space. Here are some hacks to help you make your home feel more loved and lived-in while keeping things practical. EMBRACE PERSONAL TOUCHES

collections or meaningful items on shelves or in glass cabinets. These small details reflect your personality and give the space character.

UTILIZE TEXTILES AND SOFT FURNISHINGS

Rugs: Layering rugs can instantly add warmth and depth to a room. Choose various textures and sizes to create visual interest without making permanent changes. Cushions and throws: Add throw pillows and cozy blankets to sofas and chairs. These accessories not only add comfort, but also serve as easy ways to introduce color and patterns.

NATURAL ELEMENTS

Indoor plants: Incorporate low-

maintenance plants to bring life and freshness into your home. Use a mix of planters, hanging pots or wall-mounted planters to add greenery to various corners. Natural light: Maximize natural light by keeping curtains or blinds open during the day. Natural light not only elevates the ambiance, but also helps create a cozy atmosphere.

FUNCTIONAL SOLUTIONS

Multifunctional furniture: Invest in pieces that serve multiple purposes, such as storage ottomans, nesting tables or sofa beds. These items maximize space and functionality. Now that you’ve made your home welcoming and functional, here are some easy-to-follow tips for maintaining it: 1.

Declutter regularly: Make decluttering a habit. Set aside a few minutes each day to clean up and put things back where they belong. This keeps your space orderly and prevents mess from accumulating. 2. Make functional zones: Set aside special places for certain activities. This could be a reading nook, an office or a relaxing spot. Having specified zones helps to maintain order and structure. 3. Implement storage alternatives: To keep items neatly stowed away, invest in versatile furniture with built-in storage, or add beautiful baskets and shelves. Also make sure to utilize vertical space. 4. Have a cleaning routine: Incorporate small cleaning tasks into your daily routine. Wipe down surfaces, do a load of laundry or sweep/ vacuum high-traffic areas. These small efforts prevent messes from piling up. 5. Keep a “drop zone”: Make a specific area near the entry for keys and other commonplace items. This keeps clutter from spreading and makes it simple to locate items before leaving. 6. Use labels and containers: Labeling containers and shelves keeps things organized. To readily identify what you need, use clear containers for products like spices, pantry goods or craft supplies. 7. Make checklists: Make a daily checklist for fast jobs like making the bed, doing the dishes and picking up the living room. Checking off these items gives you a sense of satisfaction and keeps your home neat. 8. Brighten up your decor: Choose simple or carefully placed decorations. Too much stuff can make a room appear cluttered. Choose a few statement pieces that add to the aesthetic without overpowering the space. 9. Conduct regular maintenance checks: Schedule regular checks for appliances, HVAC systems and other household necessities. Preventative maintenance ensures that everything operates well and avoids unexpected problems. 10. Adapt as needed: Life can be hectic, so adjust your routines accordingly. Don’t be too hard on yourself if you skip a day; consistency is the key.

Five ways for moms to have fun

while moving their bodies here on the Coast that are intentional about making exercise enjoyable. I’ll be trying as many as possible and sharing my experience on Instagram (@ gathergulfcoast). BY ALEXA HARRISON

If the only workout routine you started in January was carrying babies or hauling king cakes to and from the office, I see you. I’m not a fan of working out and never have been. I devised every excuse to sit out during gym class and instead scribbled daydreams in my notebook, convening on the bleachers with my fellow conspirators to plot our next entrepreneurial venture. Since becoming a mom (yes, I found the baby in the king cake) and toting around a toddler on my hip, I’ve noticed myself becoming stronger. But then my son makes a mad dash into oncoming traffic, and I realize my sprints aren’t what they used to be. (They were never good). Propelled by this need to keep up with my darling little boy, I’ve decided to try every workout I can until I find one that genuinely brings me joy and feels good (or at least doesn’t feel like pure torture). We have so many great gyms, classes and alternative workout options

If you’re looking to try something new in the physical fitness department, here are some options:

SUP YOGA

Doing yoga on a stand-up paddle board (SUP) is a great way to experience nature while increasing balance and focus.

BARRE AND PILATES

These intensely personalized sessions utilize controlled micro-movements that target your body’s muscle fibers to lengthen, strengthen and stretch. The Pilates machines may look like torture devices, but they’re amazing at getting you big results.

HOT EXERCISE

Infrared sauna fitness studios offer many sweaty class options, including hot yoga, hot barre, hot stretch, hot core and more. One of the best things we’ve heard about sauna workouts is that they help you sleep great.

POLE DANCE

This dynamic form of exercise not only will decrease fat, but it will increase your overall body confidence and self-esteem.

BUNGEE FITNESS

Squats, burpees, and pushups made easier? Count me in. With this workout, you’re wearing a harness and bungee cord attached to the ceiling. This makes for a low-impact and seriously fun workout where you feel weightless. CAREGIVER CORNER

DR. TRACY DANIEL-HARDY

It’s OK to leave the dishes Yesterday, I left my parents’ house without washing the dishes. It bothered me, but I walked out and tried not to look back. Although this chore was the last one to complete, I was exhausted. As I began filling the sink, I wiped sweat from my forehead, sighed deeply and turned off the water. I paused before switching off the kitchen light and walking out the door to go home. I felt guilty as I drove the short distance to my house, but I didn’t turn back and tried not to think about the sink full of dishes. I’ve noticed that I often place undue pressure on myself in my caregiving, like making sure I do the dishes, wash, fold and put clothes away, clean the bathroom, vacuum, etc. I want everything to be just right at my parents’ home while I regularly leave things undone or incomplete at my own. My husband has tried to tell me gently that sometimes, I do too much. “You are acting like your daddy!” he jokes, who often does “too much,” especially when we are in a rush to get somewhere. Because I recognize my husband has a point, I’ve started sitting in the car during our quick trips to my parents’ home to avoid getting sucked into the vortex of cleaning and shifting things around. I’m also trying to relieve some of the pressure to do it all in one visit. On this particular visit, before making it home, I decided that I would wash the dishes later that evening. Having a plan to complete the task made it easier for me to sit and relax. Some of you may be struggling similarly with stressors and undue pressure in your caregiving journey, so, let’s try some things to give ourselves some grace.

ACCEPT THAT SOME THINGS CAN WAIT

Can the dishes wait? Probably. Instead of huffing through the chore, sit down to listen to an audible book of your choice, mindlessly scroll social media or rewatch your favorite television show. When I need to declutter my mind, I find it helpful to rewatch episodes of one of my favorite shows. When I do that, I don’t have to pay close attention to keep up. And if I fall asleep or go down a social media rabbit hole while I watch, it’s no big deal because I haven’t missed anything.

GET SOMEONE ELSE TO DO IT

Hire or barter services with someone to do those chores that you don’t enjoy or struggle with. This will help reduce stress and allow you to be more present for those to whom you provide care. We have someone who helps with house cleaning twice a month. Although I’d like to schedule her more often, I appreciate the deeper cleaning she does during those visits.

48

February 2024

SET A SCHEDULE

Create a task schedule that works for you. For instance, I typically schedule linen changes, manicures/pedicures and bath scrubs for my parents on weekends when I am less constrained by time.

DIVIDE AND CONQUER

Decide who does what, and fill in the gaps as needed. My husband takes out the trash, and I wash and fold clothes. He may jump in to do the laundry but leave the clothes for me to fold and put away. We both wash the dishes. This division of duties organically happened and works well for us. My cousin, who assists during the week, helps where she sees a need.

GIVE YOURSELF GRACE

Know that as hard as you try, you will miss something. There will be times when you won’t always get it “right” in your caregiving. That’s OK. Holding yourself to unrealistic expectations can negatively impact the care you provide. Make time to rest to prevent exhaustion, health issues, and mistakes. Tracy Daniel-Hardy, Ph.D, is the author of “The Adventures of Butch and Ruby: Chronicles of a Caregiver” and director of technology for Gulfport School District. Valentine’s gift ideas for him Helpful tips and picks he’s sure to love

David Donahue trim fit dress shirt, $155

If you’re buying for a guy this Valentine’s Day, you know that finding just the right gift can be mission impossible. Peter Grant, buyer and owner of Grant’s Menswear in Biloxi, is here to make shopping for him simple with these stylish suggestions: PETER GRANT’S TIPS FOR PICKING THE PERFECT GUY GIFT 1. Trust your first instinct on what to purchase; it’s usually the best choice. 2. Purchase high-quality, timeless pieces that will last many years. Solid black, charcoal and gray are staples of my wardrobe that I can match with anything. 3. Pay attention to his style and color preferences. There may be a specific color or colors that he simply doesn’t like. 4. Know his exact size in various categories. Casual shirts run S-XXL. Dress shirts require neck and sleeve measurements like 16-4/5. Also be sure to know his waist and inseam, 34/32 for instance. 5. When it comes to putting shirts, suits and ties together, keep it simple and understated. I always use a contrast of color and texture, but avoid combining stripes, prints and plaids. 6. Shop at a reputable store that makes exchanges seamless and painless.

THE EFFECTS OF TANNING BEDS

If you can’t resist the urge to look tan, the Skin Cancer Foundation recommends using a light pink blush for pale skin tones, or a deeper blush or bronzer if you have a darker skin tone, to brighten your complexion and give yourself a radiant glow. You also can try a sunless self-tanner. Be sure to also use sunscreen with SPF 30, as most self-tanners do not provide any sun protection. To keep your skin as healthy as possible, avoid sun tanning and UV indoor tanning altogether; use a broad-spectrum (UVA/UVB) sunscreen with an SPF of 30 or higher every day and examine your skin head to toe every month. It is also important to see a dermatologist every year for a professional skin exam.

Indoor tanning equipment, which includes all artificial light sources, including beds, lamps, bulbs, booths, etc., emits UVA and UVB radiation. Ultraviolet A (UVA) rays are the cause of visible signs of aging, such as wrinkles, hyperpigmentation (sun spots) and loss of elasticity. More importantly, UVA rays penetrate deeper, to the dermalepidermal junction of the skin, where they can damage your cells’ DNA, causing abnormal cells to begin to grow that can cause melanoma. Tanning beds also emit ultraviolet B (UVB) rays, which penetrate the upper layers of the skin, known as the epidermis. Evidence from multiple studies has shown that exposure to UV radiation from indoor tanning devices is associated with an increased risk of melanoma and nonmelanoma skin cancer, including squamous cell carcinoma and basal cell carcinoma.

FASHION FORECAST:

just peachy! BY CARLA BIASI

The Pantone Color Institute has released its color of the year for 2024, and I’m delighted to share that it’s peach fuzz. Don’t worry if you don’t like orangey tones because this hue is soft and muted. The shade is reminiscent of something sweet, maybe warmer months and happiness. How does this affect your life? Well, you’ll be seeing this color not only in apparel, but across many industries like entertainment, marketing and interior design. My favorite ways to wear it are with beige or white, a neutral like navy or, my personal pick, monochromatic. Whether you wear it or incorporate it into your home, get some of this shade in your life. It’ll leave you feeling peachy keen. • Showcase your peach fuzz-colored top by adding interest like a cutout.

That’s the best description for the Lume natural deodorant I’ve clung to. Lume has invented this whole-body deodorant lotion, and I truly feel and smell better. Skin safe ingredients are IN!

5. GO AHEAD AND WEAR RED

I don’t care who you are — every woman needs a signature red lip in her arsenal, and nothing beats a classic. I’m incredibly fair, almost pink if you ask my mother, and my go-to red lip is Fenty Beauty uncensored. Uncensored is fitting if you ask anyone who knows me. As the well-known saying states, well-behaved women seldom make history.

6. NOT YOUR MOTHER’S DRY SHAMPOO I happen to be the CEO of two companies: The Mermaid Dive Bar, and my family. Not Your Mother’s Overnight Clean Freak dry shampoo has saved the day or night in this busy life. This product has riskfree ingredients and is made without harmful silicone or sulfate. Again — ingredient safe products are IN!

7. IONIC IS ICONIC

The EZBASICS ionic facial steamer can turn my day right around. In addition to its hydrating and moisturizing benefits, this is so relaxing. Self-care is self-love. I use a 100 percent natural essential oil breath blend.

8. LAVENDER LOVER

For years, I have been using Dr. Bronner’s 18-1 hemp lavender pure Castille soap. If this soap didn’t already have my heart with its luxurious lavender lather, it’s certified fair trade and contains organic oils. Absolute cleanliness is godliness.

Tie up your style with a bow Dainty detail continues to take center stage in 2024 At the end of 2023, we saw bows blow up in popularity — and I don’t see that changing in early 2024. Although some people aren’t fans of this fad, there’s no doubt that bows are trending; for proof, look no further than the Golden Globes red carpet. From tying them around glass décor to wearing them for special occasions, bows are having a moment in fashion, and even interior design. Of course, they have been a statement piece since the '20s, but now they are bigger and better than ever.

THE HAIR BOW TREND IS IN

I’ve seen so many people use the bow in such creative ways to amplify their hairstyles. From small bows to large, these accessories make your slickedback style sleeker and more chic. The virtually limitless options for colors and textures make this trend even more fun and customizable. For instance, The Hair Edit website features a knotted tie with double bows to create a one-of-a-kind look ($5.85, thehairedit.com). Epona Valley also has come up with a fashionable way to wear a bow: the Madeline circlet, ($198, eponavalley.com).

THE BIGGER, THE BETTER

In fashion bows are being added to garments in the most imaginative ways. From coats and dresses to shirts and socks, they are becoming standout design elements. I’m in love with dresses that accentuate the shoulders, especially when a bow is involved. For outerwear, I’m loving the coat by Lirika Matoshi ($600, lirikamatoshi. com). It’s the cutest piece and has so much personality. I also love bow details on dresses that create a 3D effect, like the Natalie and Alanna Brandy Brown Mini Dress ($375, natalieandalanna.com). Love it or loathe it, the bow trend is here to stay for a while. Are you willing to give it a try? Jasmine Ball is a Mississippi fashion, beauty and lifestyle blogger. weddings

Let the dress inspire your

wedding jewelry You said “yes” to the dress, and Gail Pav of Pav & Broome Fine Jewelry suggests making this the basis of your wedding jewelry decisions. “Make sure the style complements the dress,” she advises. Here are Pav’s other tips:

METAL COLOR

Is the dress a creamy, off-white color? If so, the bride can lean toward yellow gold. If it is classic, stark white, then go with clean, neutral metals like white gold or platinum. Rose or pink gold can go well with both in some cases.

DRESS STYLE

• If the dress is classic and simple, then the jewelry should flow with that theme. Less is more. But when choosing “less,” it needs to really be a classic statement piece. If the bride’s hair is up, choose some Mikimoto classic drop pearl and diamond earrings. If her hair is down, then pick a straight-line diamond necklace or a big, juicy South Sea Mikimoto pearl and diamond drop pendant. But then keep the earrings very simple or go without. • If the dress is over the top and flowingly romantic, then by all means go all out with the jewelry.

• Is the dress vintage style? Choose actual heirloom jewelry or pieces that look like they were passed down from your grandmother Scalloped edges and milgrain looks would be appropriate. • Is the dress nontraditional? If so, let the jewelry be as well. For instance, Simon G’s right-hand ring is a great wedding gift. However, it doesn’t always have to be newly purchased jewelry. Sometimes the most special items have a family story behind them. • Is the dress edgy and modern? Then Gabriel & Co.’s diamond collar necklace with small vertical drop accents would be a nice contrast. • Is it a barefoot beach wedding with a bohostyle dress? Then keep the jewelry casual. Gabriel & Co.’s double-layered diamond station necklace and diamond anklet would be just what the occasion calls for. Stacking bracelets also round out the look. See Gabriel & Co.’s Bujukan bracelet line.

NATIONAL CHILDREN’S DENTAL HEALTH MONTH

HEALTHY HABITS FOR HEALTHY SMILES BY GINGER CHRISTIAN

February is National Children’s Dental Health Month, and this year’s theme from the American Dental Association is “Healthy Habits for Healthy Smiles!” This annual observance reminds families of the importance of good oral health, specifically for children. Establishing healthy attitudes toward dental care and routines is as important as any other life skill, as much as cooking and counting. So how do we put children on the path to healthy smiles? A healthy smile starts with the basics: brushing teeth for two minutes, twice daily, and flossing daily. This applies to anyone with a grin, but say your child is not a fan of the activity. Make teeth time more fun with colorful timers, sticker charts that reward consistency or songs that are at least two minutes long to brush along with. Make it a family affair by brushing teeth together, or even letting your child brush your teeth first! Just be sure to brush thoroughly after. National Children’s Dental Health Month also serves as a reminder to schedule your child’s cleanings. Most dental plans provide two annual cleanings. While tooth decay is avoidable, it is the most common childhood disease. So even if your child is the best at brushing for the full two minutes, twice a day, and flossing daily, a visit to the dentist is still necessary. Sometimes there are problems only a dentist or hygienist can diagnose. Dr. Cameron Larson, owner and managing partner of South Mississippi Smiles, says, “We encourage parents to bring their children in as early as 6 months, even if a child hasn’t gotten their first teeth. It’s important for parents to start that routine visit and for us to provide education, especially to first time parents.” “But my child hates going to the dentist!” South Mississippi Smiles is a kids-only dental office that provides a fun, familyfriendly environment to help alleviate those fears. Their offices in Gulfport and Pascagoula have televisions playing movies in every patient area. Parents are always welcome in treatment rooms, and most insurance plans are accepted. If your child has severe dentist anxiety, you can schedule a “Happy Visit” prior to your child’s actual appointment to familiarize him or her with the clinic and staff. The Pascagoula location has a Sensory Sensitive room, and both offices offer conscious sedation. Conscious sedation is offered at no charge to military families on the Gulf Coast. South Mississippi Smiles cares about good dental health care beyond their offices, with visits to elementary schools, head starts and health fairs throughout the year. They provide demonstrations to children on how to brush and floss, with puppet shows and story times to promote healthy habits early. To schedule a visit from South Mississippi Smiles for a fun dental presentation for kids, email GingerChristian@KidsDentalBrands.com. A heart healed

Olan Dunn is a U.S. Navy veteran, a decades-long retiree of Ingalls Shipbuilding, a devoted grandfather and the first Memorial patient to receive a transcatheter valve replacement (TAVR). This procedure is recommended for patients suffering from severe aortic stenosis, or the narrowing of the heart’s aortic valve. SEEING STARS

Symptoms of aortic stenosis include heart murmurs, chest pain, tiredness, shortness of breath and heart palpitations. Dunn was “seeing stars” when he was experiencing the most severe symptoms and was diagnosed with a heart murmur. It wasn’t until April 2023 that he started to worry. “I got up one morning and knew something was wrong,” he recalls. “My daughter called the paramedics. Had I been five minutes later arriving at the hospital, I wouldn’t be here.” From there, Dunn was referred to Dr. Umair Malik, who sat down with Dunn to review his options, including TAVR. Rather than replacing the failing valve via openheart surgery, this less-invasive procedure replaces the valve via a catheter inserted into a blood vessel. “Dr. Malik used heart models and explained everything,” Dunn says, “showing me where they were going to put the stent and what was going to come next.”

CLOSE TO HOME

Dr. Malik says he believes strongly that local patients need this service. “I have seen patients, who can't walk from the parking lot to the exam room, travel for several appointments to different locations over an hour away — only to get a procedure that we should be able to offer,” he says. “After working for three years to get the program off the ground, I felt like we were able to address a major unmet need of our community.” Dunn was “a little apprehensive” about the procedure, especially being the first. However, as he was waiting to go into the surgery, he saw a familiar face – his at-home nurse. He realized once he entered the operating room that the Memorial cardiology team was there to observe the procedure. One thing Dunn is most grateful for is not having to travel elsewhere to get the care he needs and being able to continue his treatment plan, including cardiac rehabilitation, close to home. He’s also grateful for his care team.

‘LUCKY AND WONDERFUL’

a

As part of his recovery and treatment plan, Dunn attends cardiac rehabilitation several times week. “I can’t run the 100-yard dash like I used to,” he laughs when asked how he’s feeling a few months post-surgery. “But I am ready to teach my grandkids how to swim.” As of mid-December, he was down more than 60 pounds. His cholesterol and high blood pressure also are under control, and he’s feeling “lucky and wonderful”. To learn more about this procedure, visit wearememorial.com/tavr. Memorial offers both primary care services and virtual visits. Learn more by visiting wearememorial.com or by calling (228) 867-5000.

Urinary tract infections: COMMON, AND USUALLY EASY TO TREAT Frequency, urgency, hesitancy, small voids and painful urination are the typical symptoms of urinary tract infections. Costly in terms of time and money, UTIs result in an estimated 7 million office visits, 1 million emergency department visits and over 100,000 hospitalizations annually, with an associated annual cost of $1.6 billion, according to the National InstiBY DR. PHILIP L. tute of Health. LEVIN

WHAT CAUSES UTIS?

Our kidneys filter one-third of the blood pumped with each beat of our hearts. They kick out contaminants and regulate our electrolytes and fluid balance. A normal breakdown product of our proteins (muscles and enzymes) is a small molecule named urea, which the kidneys filter into the urine, causing its distinctive smell. The urine produced by the kidneys goes down tubes (ureters) and sits in the bladder until we urinate. Normally, urine is sterile — that is, free of bacteria. Although it can become infected from above, such as when the body is septic, bacteria more commonly access the bladder from below. Women have a very short tube from the bladder to the outside, the urethra, and with age, this tube becomes flabby — allowing bacteria to enter it more easily. It’s also susceptible to leaking in bacteria when irritated, such as with sexual intercourse or bubble baths. Other physical activities, such as horseback or motorcycle riding, do not seem to be causes.

HOW ARE UTIS TREATED?

Fortunately, bladder infections are easily treated. Because the urine sits in the bladder’s smooth-walled container, as little as a single pill or three days of antibiotics cures over

66

February 2024

90 percent of infections. About a third of bladder infections will heal without any treatment or with holistic care, such as increased fluid intake. However, if the infection works its way up to the kidneys, more serious symptoms of fever and vomiting result, and a more vigorous and extensive intervention of antibiotics and IV fluids may be necessary.

WHAT CAUSES RECURRENT INFECTIONS?

Anomalies of the bladder, like polyps or stones, can cause recurrent infections. Uncommonly, a kidney stone can obstruct the output from a kidney and cause infection, in which case the kidney may die — putting the patient at serious health risk. Usually, though, once an infection is treated, the patient has no significant aftereffects. Some women suffer frequent urinary infections. For them, a workup that includes a cystoscope (a device used to examine the bladder) and ultrasound is warranted to ascertain if there’s a structural cause, such as a polyp or stone. Treatment with a single, low-dose antibiotic daily has been found markedly effective at preventing these recurrent infections, while some patients prefer to keep a supply of full-strength antibiotics on hand if symptoms start. Urine infections are common, with one in three women requiring treatment by age 24. Fortunately, most can be easily cured. Common recommendations of emptying the bladder after coitus, limiting spermicide use and drinking cranberry juice have not been found effective, but they seem harmless and may help certain individuals. Disability insurance: BENEFITS, HOW IT WORKS

BY ANGELYN TREUTEL ZERINGUE

Life insurance helps protect those you leave behind. But what if you are severely injured and unable to work? Insurance protection is available to help you.

SHORT-TERM DISABILITY INSURANCE

Short-term disability insurance is designed to provide income replacement for individuals who are unable to work due to a temporary illness, injury or disability. There is usually a waiting period, known as the elimination period, before you can start receiving benefits. Short-term disability insurance typically provides a percentage of your pre-disability income, usually around 60-70 percent of your regular salary. Short-term disability benefits are meant to cover temporary disabilities, usually for a period of up to six months. To qualify, you must provide medical documentation from a qualified healthcare professional that certifies your disability and inability to work.

LONG-TERM DISABILITY INSURANCE

Long-term disability insurance is designed to provide income replacement to individuals who are unable to work for an extended period due to a disabling illness or injury. After a disability occurs, there is usually an elimination period during which no benefits are paid. This period can range from 30 to 180 days. Typically, the benefit amount is a percentage of the individual's pre-disability income, such as

50-70 percent. Some policies may consider individuals disabled if they can’t perform the duties of their own occupation, while others may require the inability to perform any gainful occupation. Some policies provide benefits until the policyholder reaches retirement age, and others may have a limited benefit period, such as two to 10 years.

TIPS FOR SHOPPING FOR DISABILITY COVERAGE

When shopping for disability insurance, consider the following: • Start by evaluating your financial situation, including your income, expenses and savings, to determine how much income you would need in the event of a disability. • Look for reputable companies with a strong track record of providing disability insurance. Consider their financial stability, customer reviews and ratings from independent agencies. This information can help you gauge the company’s reliability and trustworthiness. Ensure you fully understand the terms and conditions before deciding. • Remember, disability insurance is a long-term commitment, so take your time to thoroughly research and compare options. By following these steps and seeking professional advice, you can find the disability insurance policy that best suits your needs and offers financial protection in the event of a disability. Pulsing is power Have you ever bounced up and down during a workout and wondered if you were doing anything worthwhile? Pilates, yoga, barre and cycling all feature amazing pulsing exercises, and research has shown that pulsating movements have different, but similarly beneficial, effects to full-range movements. Pulsing activates the target muscle you're working out and quickly fatigues it. There’s been much said about pulsing versus full-range workouts, and both have amazing advantages. Pulsing can really target the area you want to work out — making it stronger to help you gain mobility and increase circulation. The enhanced blood flow helps increase muscle mass. Pulsing also helps stabilize the muscles you are trying to build. The most important thing about all the pulsing exercises I’m about to share is that they are great for beginners, experts or anyone in between, and you don’t need any equipment. However, this doesn’t mean you should quit your full-range workouts. To get even better results, combine both types of exercise routines. Here are some pulsing exercises you can add to your fitness regimen:

PULSING LUNGES

Pulse lunges target your abdominals, back muscles, glutes, hamstrings and calves simultaneously. You'll feel these the next day, but your legs will thank you later. Pulsing lunges help improve your balance while also stabilizing your muscles. Lunging in general is a great bilateral workout that makes your body more symmetrical while correcting imbalances.

PULSING CRUNCHES

Take the basic crunch to the next level. Stabilizing your upper and lower body is key, and this workout will give you the balance you need for your core. Plus, this workout is a great way to get a flat tummy and tone your abs. This workout is very similar to pulse ups. If you love feeling the burn after a good workout, this is the exercise for you.

70

February 2024

BY KAISHA COLSTON

BRIDGE PULSE

This move is great for stabilizing your posture and working out your glutes. Bridge pulsing also does wonders for your hip abductors and hamstrings. If you try these, make sure you are doing them correctly to avoid causing lower back pain. What I love about this exercise is how you can really feel the muscle activation. First, you will feel your core and glutes, followed by your hamstrings, as you tone those areas. Building your core will improve your posture, too, and you'll also add power and strength to your glutes and hamstrings.

PULSE UPS

Pulse-ups engage your glutes and abs simultaneously. Focusing on your breathing while doing this exercise can help prevent back injury, so when you’re lifting your hips, breathe in and out as you lower them. Start slow and steady if you need to work on balance. Don't feel bad if you can’t fully lift up. Just keep practicing, and you'll get there.

LEG RAISE PULSE

Many of these exercises so far have been about the glutes and core, but we can’t forget about our thighs. This move can be modified to ensure beginners are getting the maximum benefit. You can start with one leg on the floor, or you can go in a plank position, holding out one leg and pulsing that leg for 30 seconds. Either way, you will get an effective workout with great results.

7 > ½ Heart harmony: A GUIDE TO CARING FOR EVERY BEAT FROM SINGING RIVER HEALTH SYSTEM

The human heart is a very complex, intricate organ that plays a pivotal role in sustaining life. The heart is comprised of a variety of structures, each with a specific function and purpose. As the orchestrator of the body’s circulatory system, a healthy heart is critical for overall wellbeing. Appreciating and understanding the role each structure plays can motivate us to adopt heart-healthy habits. Here’s a comprehensive guide for caring for each heart component:

some sort of physical activity regularly, and keep your body moving to improve overall cardiovascular health.

CARDIAC MUSCLE

CHAMBERS AND VALVES

Role: The heart consists of four chambers: right atria, right ventricle, left atria and left ventricle, each playing a vital role in blood circulation. Valves, including the tricuspid, pulmonic, mitral and aortic, act as gatekeepers, ensuring blood flows in the right direction. This orchestrated process involves receiving deoxygenated blood, oxygenating it through the lungs and then distributing oxygenated blood throughout the body with each heartbeat. Care tips: Adopting a healthy lifestyle, including proper diet and exercise, and avoiding smoking contribute significantly to the overall wellbeing of the heart chambers and valves, promoting a healthier cardiovascular system.

Are Vaccines Safe?

• The United States long-standing vaccine safety system ensures that vaccines are as safe as possible. • For example, hundreds of millions of Americans have safely received seasonal flu and COVID-19 vaccines.

Do Vaccinations Cause Side Effects?

• Vaccines can have side effects, but most people experience only mild side effects—if any—after vaccination. • The most common side effects are fever, tiredness, body aches, or redness, swelling and tenderness where the shot was given. • Mild reactions usually go away on their own within a few days. Serious or long-lasting side effects are extremely rare, and vaccine safety is continually monitored.

Why Should I Get Vaccinated?

• Getting vaccinated is the best way to reduce your risk of getting these diseases. • Vaccines reduce your risk of getting very sick if you do get these diseases. • The people most at risk for getting very sick from these diseases are people over age 65, people with disabilities and people who have compromised immune systems or health conditions like asthma, diabetes or heart and lung disease.

What is the Cost?

• Vaccines are covered by insurance. Not insured? We can help.

There are more important things in life than worrying about wearing shorts or showing off your legs due to spider veins. While it’s true these nuisances can make you self-conscious, there is good news; you don’t have to live with spider veins. BY DR. J KEITH THOMPSON Let’s delve deeper into all things sclerotherapy so you can love your legs again. Sclerotherapy is a medical procedure commonly used to treat some varicose veins and spider veins. This office-based, quick treatment involves injecting the affected veins with a medication that causes the damaged veins to collapse and ultimately disappear. While it’s primarily a medical intervention aimed at improving vein health, it has the added benefit of improving your legs’ appearance. Here are some frequently asked questions regarding sclerotherapy: How long is each sclerotherapy session, and does it hurt? Treatment sessions typically are done in 20-to-30-minutes, and most patients find the procedures very tolerable with no pain. Do my spider veins disappear immediately? Unfortunately, not typically. The smaller veins may disappear quickly while they are being injected. However, the medication causes inflammation inside the vein, which typically turns red and looks irritated for a few days. It’s important to understand that sclerotherapy often requires multiple sessions. We caution our patients that not all information on social media is accurate, and it is important to have realistic expectations when starting this process. Some veins may look worse before they begin to heal and fade, which is why we typically don’t recommend doing sclerotherapy within days of going on a planned beach trip or somewhere you expect to be showing off your legs. Post treatment, do I have to limit any activities? Yes and No. It is recommended to avoid strenuous exercises, such as lifting heavy weights or vigorous hiking, and to avoid soaking in a hot tub for at least a week. However, normal day-to-day activities and walking are encouraged. While compression stockings are not required, they will help speed up the recovery time and make it more comfortable. Can my spider veins return after treatment? Once a vein is treated and has time to heal, it will fade for good. However, sclerotherapy does not prevent new spider veins from developing. Since 80 percent of the population ultimately develop spider veins, treatments can be ongoing. Fortunately, the results of sclerotherapy are good, and the difference between the before and after is impressive. How will I feel after sclerotherapy? Common symptoms after a treatment may involve some mild itching and redness at the injection sites. Most patients find the post-treatment symptoms very minimal. What should I do if I am bothered by my spider veins? For the best results, patients should seek an evaluation by a board-certified vein specialist who can evaluate the problematic veins and recommend a personalized course of treatment. Spider veins don’t have to be an ongoing source of selfconsciousness. Take advantage of the treatment options available, and let a vein specialist help you regain the legs of your youth, improve your vein health and love your legs again. Dr. J. Keith Thompson is a board-certified vein surgeon and the medical director of the Vein Institute in D’Iberville and Hattiesburg. Dr. Thompson also serves on committees of the American Venous Forum, a leading organization for shaping vein policy and training vascular surgeons across the country. Ultimately, we want to provide the guests with food they may not find on the Coast while also keeping it approachable.” On the breakfast menu, you can get items such as a breakfast plate, biscuit sandwich omelet, pancakes, pastries and bread. The lunch menu consists of three sections: tartines, starters and mains. I kicked off my dining experience with the beets and honey from the starters section. This dish showcased a trio of salt-roasted beets, grapefruit supremes, shaped radishes and goat cheese and pistachio croquettes sitting atop a fermented honey-pistachio spread sprinkled with toasted pistachios. It not only looked exquisite but also delighted my taste buds. For the next course, I indulged in the croque madame, a delicious creation featuring house-made brioche. It featured layers of succulent Black Forest ham, generously coated in a rich gruyere cheese mornay sauce and topped with a perfectly cooked sunny-side-up egg. I also had the pleasure of trying the house-made corned beef hash. Brew Paddle prepares its brisket with a 10-to-12-day brining process, then roasts and expertly cuts the meat before combining it with crispy potatoes, caramelized onions, creamy bearnaise sauce, sweet peppers and yet another perfectly cooked sunny-side-up egg. The result was a thoroughly satisfying addition to my meal, both hearty and bursting with flavor. Ending on a sweet note, I was treated to a blueberry and lavender pop tart. Except for the sprinkles, every component is made from scratch, including the pastry, icing and jam. It was a whimsical way to end a delightful meal. Brew Paddle Café is open Tuesday through Thursday 8 a.m. to 2 p.m., and Friday and Saturday 7 a.m. to 3 p.m. for breakfast and lunch.

Food, fun, fabulousness YOU DON’T HAVE TO BE A FOOTBALL FAN TO ENJOY THE BIG GAME BY JENNIFER GENTILE

Forget everything you think you know about the “typical” football fan. When Super Bowl Sunday arrives on Feb. 11, women will be watching in huge numbers. In fact, Nielson reports that females comprise 46 percent of the Super Bowl viewing audience. To put that in perspective, that's higher viewership than the Oscars, Grammys and Emmys combined. Whether or not you’re a fan of the teams or care about what’s happening on the field, you still can have plenty of fun watching the big game.

EDIBLE ENJOYMENT

What’s the Super Bowl without something tasty (and decidedly unhealthy) to nosh on? Why not get creative and make a snack spread worthy of an endzone dance? If you need ideas, check out some delicious recommendations from Caroline Davis — a cookbook author and social media content creator known as @ MississippiKween.

THE COMMERCIALS

The Super Bowl is the one mass-viewing event where no one’s fast-forwarding through the ads. In 2023, a 30-second Super Bowl commercial cost an average of $7 million, according to Forbes — and the best ads get at least as much attention as the most crucial plays. It’s worth tuning in just so you know what everyone’s talking about on Monday. During the game, poll your party

80

February 2024

guests to see which ads are the favorites, from the hilarious to the heartwarming.

THE HALFTIME SHOW

There’s an argument to be made that the halftime show has become as big as the game itself. It’s the ultimate combination of sports and pop culture. This year’s headline act is Usher, so you know we’re going to be busting some moves in our living rooms.

SOCIAL MEDIA

The Super Bowl is a shared experience tailor made for social media. According to a report from Influence Central, 78 percent of consumers engage in social media while watching the Super Bowl. Approximately 38 percent want to share their thoughts on the commercials, and 32 percent want to react to the game. Following the commentary can be the most entertaining part of the night. Not sure what to serve at your watch party? Check out recipes from Caroline Davis (@MississippiKween).
