This journey began for me on August 1,2017, I was 259 pounds, I wanted to make a change in my life. I joined FITlife studio and began personal training with Rebeca Gonzalez. My meal plan consisted of lean meats, veggies, fruits, and ViSalus shakes. My trainer Rebeca asked me to enter a 90 day transformation challenge and I agreed. In my first 90 days I lost 23.4 pounds. Then a second 90 challenge was presented and I decided to go for it again. In my second 90 day challenge I lost 39.6 pounds. In 6 months I have lost a total of 63 pounds! It has not been easy but so well worth the work. This would have not been possible without my trainer pushing me to be the best me I can be. I get overwhelmed with excellent and joy to think about how far I have come. I am looking forward to the next challenge. I will succeed in my weigh loss/Fitlife journey. As my other trainer Joe Barker always says “No excuses” and I live by that daily. If I can get up and go to work then I can get up and go workout. This has been the best decision I ever made, not only for myself but also my family. Shannon McNair | Total weight loss: 64 pounds My weight loss journey started in August 2016. One year after I had a motorcycle accident, which left me in severe knee pain. I was approached by one of my coworkers, who noticed I was having a difficult time walking due to the accident and excessive weight. She asked that I join her at Beauties and Beasts Fitness Camp. I finally decided to give it a try, I could not do a push up, sit up, run, but I never gave up. As part of changing my diet I was introduced to ViSalus and the Vi challenge groups (less strenuous program). At the end of August, I was diagnosed with hypertension and diabetes. So, I started focusing on just being a healthier me. I am determined to see my children grow up. I worked hard and in October 2016 I was taken off both my diabetes and hypertension medications. My total weight loss thus far is 60 pounds and counting! I owe it all to my family, my trainers Joe and Rebeca, and my motivator Nichelle. I changed my mindset and it changed my life. I love my trainers and my amazing fit family. Jacqui Harris | Total weight loss: 60 Pounds
Being a part of Fitlife Studio and the fit family has truly been a life changing experience. Not only am I getting healthier, but I am regaining my confidence. Since I started personal training with Rebeca Gonzalez, I am currently down 48 pounds and counting! My 16 year old daughter is also training with Rebeca and she has lost 20 pounds! This is a family affair. The best part is that we have an entire family of people who believe in you and are holding you accountable. Fitlife studio has been life changing. MEET ANDRIA ALLEN Controller, Allen Hyundai
Andria is a Gulfport native that has rediscovered her home and passion here on the Mississippi Gulf Coast while working alongside her husband, Scott Allen, after chasing her dreams of big city life for 10 years. Today, Andria shares an office with her husband, owner of Allen Hyundai, and together they handle all day-to-day decisions of the Gulfport based car dealership. After graduating with her Bachelor’s in Finance from USM she moved to Atlanta where she worked for American General Finance a division of AIG before taking a position as the Assistant Vice President at a large commercial janitorial business in D.C. After living the rat race of city life for nearly a decade as one of the youngest female executives in the business, Andria made the decision to be closer to her nieces and moved home to Gulfport. She met Scott shortly after moving home and the couple were married in 2014. In 2015, Andria was accepted into Tulane’s Executive MBA program and just a month after being accepted into the program she found out she was pregnant with their first child. She managed to graduate from Tulane’s eMBA program as the only woman to have ever had a baby while in the program and still finish on time. She came to work with Scott after graduating as he finished the process of purchasing Allen Hyundai last year. She passionately pushes for more women in the automotive industry. At Allen Hyundai, she mentors women to become leaders in a historically male dominated field. The National Automobile Dealers Association recently reported that women make up 19% of dealership employees and at Allen Hyundai women represent 28%. “We don’t typically see female applicants looking for a sales position, but we want women to know that it can be quite rewarding to help someone find a car that fits their needs in an industry that has had a notorious reputation” says Andria. “I think women have a misconception out there that you have to be a car enthusiast to do the job and really it’s like any other sales job, you just have to help someone find a solution to their problem and we have a car lot full of solutions.” At Allen Hyundai, they focus on a culture that encourages women to join a new era in Automotive Sales.

Is the blood supply shrinking? When the Red Cross held a blood drive honoring well-known business and community leader Kearn Cherry, many people asked, “Do we have a blood shortage? What’s going on.” Cherry experienced a scare when hospitalized. It took her health care team a few days to understand that the blood given to her during a blood transfusion did not have the rare RH factor she required and therefore her body was resisting the transfused blood. “My blood cells literally ate the blood
given during the first blood transfusion,” she says. IS THERE A SHORTAGE? Roughly 40 percent of the area’s blood supply comes from high school and college students and even though school is back in session, it wasn’t during the end of December and beginning of January. We prepare for this, and work to keep a healthy supply of blood available when hospitals and patients in our community need it. But then we add a handful of days in January when winter weather shut down travel and business in South Mississippi and a flu season where the CDC is now saying could be one of the worst on record and it’s a perfect storm for a shrinking blood supply. All these factors don’t just affect the blood supply though, it also increases the number of people needing blood and blood components at hospitals. WHAT ARE SOME THINGS PEOPLE ARE MISINFORMED ABOUT WHEN IT COMES TO DONATING BLOOD? Many people think they can’t give due to diabetes medications. In the ‘80s and ‘90s this may have been true but today the treatments for diabetes are synthetic and shouldn’t affect your ability to give blood. People also think that because they recently got a tattoo they can’t give blood. Today as long as your tattoo was from a licensed facility in Mississippi, Louisiana, Alabama or Texas, you can donate blood just 30 days afterward. WHAT PRECLUDES A PERSON FROM BEING A DONOR? Certain travel, medications, or activities can defer some-

one from donating blood. There’s a survey we’re going to give you before your donation to make sure your donation is going to be a positive one for you and the patients you’re trying to donate blood for. THE REVEAL
At home with ‘Home Town’ cast member Mallorie and husband, Jim, own Rasberry Financial Services and co-own The Laurel Mercantile. You can also find them behind the scenes and on the big screen as cast members in the HGTV hit show, “Home Town.” Mallorie recently shared about her life and work. TELL US ABOUT THE IMPORTANCE OF REVITALIZING YOUR HOMETOWN? Well this all started 10 years ago, really. That’s the part of the story that’s so amazing to me. Sure, having an HGTV show has absolutely helped, but the story of Laurel’s rebirth is 100 percent authentic to what was already happening here before the cameras started rolling. There was a core group of people that had invested in Laurel’s comeback, and we were all buying old buildings, renovating them, all while telling Laurel’s story to literally anyone that would listen. DESCRIBE WHAT IT FEELS LIKE TO BE ABLE TO IMPACT LIVES IN YOUR COMMUNITY? My favorite days during filming are the “reveal” days ... where the homeowners finally get to see their new home. There is so much excitement and anticipation that whole day from the entire crew it’s like a wedding day around the office. We are all just on pins and needles waiting for them to finally see it! TELL US ABOUT YOUR FAMILY. Well, I married Jim Rasberry. So that’s No. 1. He and his family are from here and have been very passionate about Laurel, even through the roughest of times. He went to Southern Miss, and I went to Ole Miss. He and Erin (Rasberry Napier) are first cousins — their dad’s are brothers. Erin was my roommate in Oxford and was doing her senior art exhibit on Jim and Danny’s First National Bank Building. She did all the ads, promos, and whole marketing package for the business opening so, naturally, Jim came up to Oxford that evening to see the exhibit. I met him at the exhibit and within two years, I had made Laurel my new hometown! (I’m from Tylertown, Miss., originally.) So it’s just one of those things that by marrying Jim, being best friends with Erin and Ben and moving to Laurel, I knew the family and downtown Laurel were a package deal. It turns out that their passion is infectious, and can even take deep hold of a girl from Tylertown. 18
March-April 2018
Mallorie Rasberry with daughter Lucy, 4
AS A MOMPRENEUR, WHAT NUGGETS HAVE YOU LEARNED ALONG THE WAY? We have a little girl, Lucy, 4, so it’s beyond difficult juggling everything, but I’ve just learned that I have to prioritize. The most important thing is that I’ve learned to say no to things that I’m not passionate about. Limiting myself to working on projects that I care about helps a lot. WHAT CAN YOU SHARE WITH READERS TO ENCOURAGE THEM TO TAKE THEIR NEXT STEP? Well, from a perspective of someone who isn’t from Laurel, what helped me most was getting involved. Whenever I moved here, I was working out of Hattiesburg. It wasn’t until I started working here and got on the board for Laurel Main Street that I truly felt vested. I wasn’t just Jim Rasberry’s wife anymore; I was Mallorie Rasberry. Being a part of the progress and change is a no-brainer for a successful business-person wanting to take the next step. TELL US ABOUT YOUR STORE, LAUREL MERCANTILE. We’ve been running an online store for several years now so as the announcement of Season One of HGTV’s “Home Town” became a reality, we decided that it was the perfect time to open the brick and mortar right here in downtown Laurel. Our hope is that people will see the show’s third main character, the city of Laurel, and want to come experience it for themselves. We hope that guests will not only visit the Mercantile, but also eat at our downtown restaurants, shop at the other merchants’ stores, visit the Lauren Rogers Museum of Art, but most importantly, see what Laurel really is the best-kept secret in Mississippi.

Flu season: It’s not over yet
This season has been a record influenza (also known as Flu) season with flu activity expected to remain high possibly through early April. Influenza is a respiratory illness caused by flu viruses. It can cause mild to severe illness, and at times can possibly even lead to death. Already, there have been more than 60 pediatric deaths reported secondary to Influenza. SYMPTOMS OF FLU The flu is different from a simple cold, although it can be hard to differentiate symptoms. Flu usually comes on suddenly with some or all of these symptoms: Abrupt onset of fever or feeling feverish/chills, cough, sore throat, runny or stuffy nose, muscle or body aches, headaches, fatigue or increased tiredness/sleeping in infants or toddlers. In addition, children with the flu also may experience vomiting and diarrhea as symptoms, typically less common in adults. While these symptoms are common with a simple cold, the symptoms are milder and usually have a more gradual onset as opposed to the flu with rare to low grade fever, typically not spiking over 101.
do not require medical care or antiviral drugs. However, it is advised that those in a high risk group (as listed above), or those that are very sick, contact a health-care provider for treatment and care, as it is advised that those in the high-risk groups should receive antiviral treatment as early as possible. Benefit is greatest if treatment is started within two days of illness onset. Emergency room visits are ONLY recommended for those who are very sick, exhibiting emergency warning signs of flu sickness. Emergency signs in children include: fast breathing or increased work of breathing, bluish or pale skin color, concerns for dehydration with minimal fluid intake or fewer wet diapers than normal, not waking up or not interacting, being so irritable that the child does not even want to be held, flu-like symptoms that seemed to temporarily improve but then return with fever and worsening cough. Whereas emergency symptoms in adults may include: pain or pressure in chest or abdomen, sudden dizziness, confusion, severe and/or persistent vomiting, or again feeling better followed by feeling much worse.
PEOPLE AT HIGH RISK While most who get the flu will recover in a few days, some are more at risk to develop complications as a result of the flu. Such complications include pneumonia, bronchiolitis, sinusitis and ear infections. In addition, flu can possibly make chronic health problems worse, such as asthma, chronic lung disease, sickle cell disease, diabetes and heart disease. Those at highest risk for developing complications include children younger than age 5 years old with increased concerns for those younger than 2 years old, as well as adults 65 years of age and older, pregnant women and those up to two weeks postpartum.
PREVENTION OF FLU Vaccination remains the best available protection against influenza. Annual seasonal influenza immunization is recommended for everyone 6 months and older. While it may have been true that this year’s vaccine has had lower than expected effectiveness against some of the more aggressive strains of flu, some protection is better than none! The good news remains that those who are vaccinated who get the flu usually get a milder form of the disease with decreased risk of complications. It’s not too late, as it has been predicted that we will have an active flu season for several more weeks.
TREATMENT OF FLU In most cases, people with the flu have mild illness and

When asked what made her get into the construction world she said was born into it. Lesley said she has had a passion for business her whole life & loves the construction world because it’s all about team work and building. Lesley said she feels that the most important thing we can do in this life is build because when we are gone what we have left is what we contributed to this world. Lesley is single mother who brings her daughter to work on a regular basis rather than using child care because she said she thinks it’s good for children to understand that work is a part of life & it is important to learn to be comfortable in a work atmosphere from a young age & not intimidated. She said she wants to instill in her daughter that she can be whatever she wants to be even if it’s being a female in a male dominated industry like herself.

HOME SELLING TIPS 2018
Ready to sell? 7 tips from a pro
These great tips can help you get the results you want: Sell your home for the most money in the least amount of time.
by Sherry Owen
QUICK TIP How to keep your house ready for showing: • Clean your home after every meal and between laundry days. Don’t leave for work, or even a quick trip to the store, without making sure your home could be toured before you return.
36
1: STAGE YOUR HOME SO BUYERS ARE READY TO MOVE IN Buyers will have an emotional response of some kind when they see your home for the first time. The feeling you want to leave them with is, “This could be my home.” Achieve this by making your home’s exterior stand out, and by staging the interior. 2: PRICE IT RIGHT If you’re planning to price your property high and bring down your price gradually, think again. Homes receive four times the traffic in the first two weeks after listing, so a property lagging on the market can be a red flag to today’s buyers. The feeling of getting early showings or an offer will far outweigh the feeling of an offer that comes after you’ve lowered your price a month later. To make sure you price your home right, obtain a comparative market analysis of recently sold properties relevant to your home’s size, location and condition. Together, you and your agent will work to find a price that matches the local norm, while taking into account your home’s individual features and upgrades. 3: DON’T OVER-UPGRADE Many large, expensive remodeling projects simply don’t
March-April 2018
pay off when you sell your home, so remodeling a whole room is just not worth the time and money. Instead, complete small, inexpensive updates that will help you get top dollar for your home. Repaint boldly colored walls to a more neutral palette, and paint over any scuff marks on white walls. Instead of buying new kitchen appliances, consider painting the cabinets white, and add modern cabinet hardware and light fixtures. Rather than replacing your avocado green toilet and sink, go stark white on all walls and add a funky vintage vibe with your shower curtain and bathroom artwork. 4: BE READY FOR A SHOWING AT ANY TIME Today’s buyers are excited and competitive. They may be willing to drop everything in order to see your home the minute it comes across their screen. 5: DON’T FORGET YOUR NEIGHBORS Your neighbors want good neighbors — and they also may know someone who wants to live in the neighborhood. By getting your neighbors involved in your sale, you may save time. Make sure you or your agent invites your neighbors to any open houses you hold, and use social media posts to mention that your home is being listed. Every time you mention your home
sale to a neighbor, whether it be online or offline, remember to ask if they know anyone who may be interested. You’ll be amazed at how quickly the word spreads! 6: BE READY TO SWEETEN THE DEAL Across the country, most sellers are at an advantage in the market. But if your home isn’t quite modern enough, or isn’t as nice as the one down the road, you may have to sweeten the pot by paying closing costs, a buyer’s home warranty, or even just getting a pre-sale home inspection so buyers are confident in your home’s ability to sell as-is. 7: MAKE SURE YOU TRUST YOUR AGENT Selecting the right agent is extremely important. You should hire an agent who has not only had great success in working with local sellers, but who also matches your style of communication. Ask your agent what makes them the right fit for selling your home and have them walk you through the process of pricing your home before signing a listing agreement. Once you sign the contract, trust your agent to advocate for you in themarket and to negotiate on your behalf with potential buyers and their agent representatives Owen is broker/owner of Owen & Co. hen you meet Holly Lemoine-Raymond, you feel her vibrant personality even before she greets you. Her energetic presence is contagious, and it’s no wonder why she’s highly successful and widely known. As owner and operator of HL Raymond Properties, a boutique real estate brokerage representing buyers and sellers along the Coast, Lemoine-Raymond is no stranger to hard work and tenacity. “You get out of life (business), what you put in to it. The old saying of, ‘If you build it, they will come,’ is great, but you can’t build it and wait for it to happen. You have to work hard to get people to notice.” Real estate is something Lemoine-Raymond always knew she wanted to do. She recalls her mother encouraging her to get her real estate license, just as she had. However, it was not until her mother passed away that she followed in her footsteps and pursued this career, opening her own brokerage. “It was kind of neat to be able to finally do something that she always wanted me to do.” Before choosing real estate, she was an assistant marketing director and operated a restaurant. She started the brokerage in 2016 with two agents and has grown it to 19 agents/employees. Lemoine-Raymond has experienced many setbacks and knows that with success comes many obstacles. Her biggest challenge was actually her

business growing too fast. “It’s a great problem to have, but success has come much faster than I ever thought it would. I am humbled by this business every day and I am so thankful for all of our clients, who allow us to help them with the process of buying or selling.” When faced with obstacles, Lemoine-Raymond pulls from the wisdom of her late mother. “My mom always told me to follow my dreams. So, I would (also) tell others not to give up. Keep pursuing your dreams.” It is this very relentless pursuit that has aided Lemoine-Raymond in building a business she loves doing and showing up for “130 percent” each day. Family not only lends itself as a legacy in Lemoine-Raymond’s career, she also draws much support from them. “I have a great family. My husband, Leo, is always there by my side, encouraging and supporting me no matter how crazy he thinks my ideas may be. He is patient and loving. My son, Landry, is my biggest inspiration. This kid never ceases to amaze me.” Her son was born with major foot issues, and doctors told his parents he would not be able to participate in many sports because of this. Now he is running in track meets for St. Stanislaus and placing in the top 10 percentile in the state, Lemoine-Raymond says. “When I look at him run, it encourages me to keep pushing forward.” Her support system also includes her dad, an accomplished musician, who works alongside her, lending a hand in day-to-day operations. Holly is very excited about what’s to come for her and her business, and continues to urge other women to work hard toward their dreams. HER BEST HOME TIP! “Keep it simple!” Don’t overcomplicate things in your home. If it isn't something you’ve used in a year, have a garage sale and get rid of it. KEEP UP WITH HER You can find Holly Lemoine-Raymond featured on HGTV and Great American Country Network (or GAC) on the shows, such as, “Beach Front Bargain Hunt” and “YOU LIVE IN WHAT?”

hen speaking to Billie Comeaux, you can quickly sense that the standards she holds in her business are also ones she aims to uphold in all that she does. Her elegant posture and thoughtfulness in her words frame a woman of flowing in wisdom. Billie Comeaux is the CEO and corporate designer of American Factory Direct, a third- generation family owned and operated furniture store. As Comeaux often remarks, she married into the furniture business, considering her husband, Robert, grew up in the business. Her father-inlaw began selling small appliances and furniture in 1937 and operated the business for 54 years. A few years later, in 1996, Billie and Robert started their own endeavor, opening American Factory Direct Furniture Outlet in Mandeville, La. The concept was simple. “A designer look, affordably priced.” What started out as a 10,000-square-foot showroom has been expanded into three locations, with a new addition just being completed at the Covington, La., location. Comeaux attributes all of her business’ growth and opportunity to God. “In the spirit of service and caring, our mission will contribute to the economic well-being of our employees, our customers and community and will honor GOD in all we do,” she says.
March-April 2018
With such an established legacy and brand, one would think success was inevitable. However, Comeaux recalls potential setbacks early on. Billie and Robert were rejected multiple times when applying for financing. Through faith, the couple applied once again for a loan. This divine meeting with the banker that approved their loan is what Billie describes as “God’s business ... . He has been the source of the growth and where we’ve grown.” Turning the corner on 22 years in the furniture business, Comeaux shares what she’s learned. “I have been in the design field and trends come and go so quickly. Stay focused on timeless designs and use the trends for the frills.” Staying focused on core design and core values is undoubtedly what has kept American Factory Direct successful for so long. Comeaux views the business mission as a team that serves. “We are in a service business, and that is what we try to encourage to our staff. No matter what area of the business you are in, we are there to help the clients.” When it comes to setting up a plan for success, Comeaux’s key practices are simple: Put God first always, lead by example, never expect others to do everything you are not willing to do yourself, and build upon a foundation of reliability and integrity.

hen you think of hand-painted, gold-rimmed wine glasses and personalized celebration box gift sets, you might naturally think, “Nella!” But, do you know the creative, business beauty behind the unique home-interiors decor and gift shop? One of the important things you quickly learn about Nella owner Katie Cusick is that family is at the heart of what she does. This family focus can be seen and felt throughout her business, and Cusick strives to extend this same feeling to her customers. Many of the items sold at Nella are handmade, and her mother’s (Kathy Allen) original paintings are available at the stop. “If you go in my shop, you’ll see at least one member of my family. They are very involved, very supportive. They are the reason why I do all of this.” Cusick says even the name of her boutique speaks of her family’s importance to her. Katie Cusick’s maiden name is "Allen," which is Nella spelled backward. “I could not think of a more fitting name for this business than this. Without these special folks, Nel-

la would not be here today. I am not successful; WE are successful. I am loved more than I could ever imagine and will never be alone in this crazy life!” A sweet moment in getting to know Katie Cusick happened when her daughter joined her on the set of the cover shoot. You could tell she was very proud of her mother. When asked about the moment and their relationship, she replied, “I love it! She gets a chance to participate and see everything that’s going around. Most importantly, she gets to see that goals can be accomplished and you can do anything you want be.” Cusick’s personal mission statement is, “Do what you love, and do it often” and she’s doing just that through Nella. She always wanted to open her own boutique; something original and a fun place to shop. “In life, you have to follow your heart and do what you think is right. Business is no different, we have to focus on the positive and let go of the negative.” When handling obstacles, Cusick says doing something you love is essential to finding courage to keep going. She adds that having a strong support system is a key element in business. And, lastly, she encourages women pursuing their dreams to stop and celebrate your successes and accomplishments. “Be proud of who you are and the company you have built.”

The best thing anyone can do is start with a good foundation. By choosing classic, neutral foundation furniture, it is easy to freshen up or restyle a room over time. For example, my client, the Weibmers, already had a beautiful home. By choosing pieces that will stand the test of time, we were able to add style and sparkle to the room with metallics and jewel-toned accessories.

5 MINUTES TASHIA MCGINN
In hindsight I’ve learned that strength is built through adversity. My strength was never giving up on my dream of some day owning and operating my own real estate brokerage. A silver lining I picked up through all the trials and tribulations was successfully diversifying myself and my talents. I credit a lot of my success over the years to finding my niche in condominiums. I’ve leased, listed, decorated and sold condominiums all along the Mississippi Gulf Coast. In addition, I proudly worked for 10 years as the HOA property manager for the Beau View Condominiums.
Principal broker/owner, EXIT Prestige Luxury Realty; interior designer, Trendsetting Designs and More How did you get started in your current business? I grew up surrounded by entrepreneurs who were driven and passionate about their company's and career paths. I knew early on that I wanted to cultivate a company of my own with the same drive and passion that I was exposed to growing up. Real estate was always a career field that interested me. One of the most appealing aspects of real estate was the fact that agents worked as independent contractors, free to make their own schedules, and work as little or as much as they wanted to. This to me, was the fundamental catalyst that I needed to become an entrepreneur. In 2005, with the guidance of a dear friend ,already licensed in real estate, I took the steps necessary to obtain my real estate license.
What is a challenge or obstacle that you had to overcome to achieve the success you have today? Initially, I was very discouraged by my new career path in real estate. The same year I became licensed, Hurricane Katrina hit. This was followed up by a crashing economy and real estate collapse and topped off with the Deep Horizon Oil Spill. 54

Which tools have helped you grow your business so rapidly? I was told once that 80 percent of success was had simply by showing up every day. To me, the most valuable tools one can poses is desire, determination, passion, faith, imagination and definitive goals. I believe that possessing these tools afforded me the ability to think bigger, work harder and to server others.
I have a passion for helping others. I may not be able to make a difference for everyone, but if I make a difference for someone that is everything to me.
What message would you like to give a woman reading your article that wants to take the next step in growing in her business or career? Never give up on your dreams and never loose faith! Try, fail, adjust. She who can think it and believe it, shall achieve it. If you can see it in your head, you can hold it in your hand. HOME EDITION sponsored by

HAPPY HOME 7 GREAT TIPS Many parents say if they’d known how quickly their children would grow and leave the nest, they would have done more together. For parents of young children, try these tips to maximize quality time together. by Sheryl Egan-Olaivar, OTR/L
GET ORGANIZED! How much time is lost looking for the same items every day? “Where are my shoes?” “Where are the car keys?” Create a place for everything and put everything in its place! This saves time and reduces clutter to make your home more relaxing. Label a tote box for each family member to put their everyday items in as they arrive home, to easily find them next time. Store toys, hair bows and frequently used items in pocket shoe organizers on the back of closet doors and separate socks, underwear, make up etc. with small baskets in drawers. LAUNDRY DAY Speed up laundry day with hampers labeled for each family member and a hanging rack with lots of hangers beside the dryer, to sort and hang clothes as soon as they come out of the dryer. MAKE A LIST Devote an hour weekly to plan the menu and grocery list. Include your children to teach them

these valuable skills. Meal planning saves time, money, is often healthier and removes the stress of “what’s for dinner?” DINE TOGETHER Eat together as a family several times a week and ask your children “What was the best part of your day?” Place phones out of sight. After the meal, read a book or play a favorite game together. Since the onset of social media, child experts have noticed a decline in children’s speech and social skills development. Make time to chat and listen to your children. SEIZE THE MOMENT Enjoy the moment! Celebrate milestones and take lots of photos. Be generous with compliments and communicate acceptable behavior; children feel more secure with clear and consistent rules. Children treated with love and respect will treat others the same and expect to be treated this way, helping to decrease bullying. SLEEP! Nurture yourself as you do others by getting enough sleep, exercise and relaxation. Have trusted friends to confide problems and when angry or frustrated, pause and ask yourself “How will this really matter in 10 years from now?" MAKE MEMORIES Research shows that experiences rather than things make people happier. Chances are the house will never really be clean or tidy enough to invite friends over, but just do it! The memories you’ll make are far more important than how the house looks! Creating family traditions and celebrating the holidays together can make people happier. So, go ahead and invite your friends and your children’s friends over to create fun, lasting memories! HOME REFRESH 6 OIL HACKS We all know that dreaded feeling when an unexpected guest knocks on the door and the house isn’t prepared. It’s one thing to have to toss a few clothes in a basket or tuck toys under the beds. But it’s another thing when your house has that stale odor smell that settles in between cleanings. To keep your home smelling great and naturally purified, try these 6 essential oil hacks. 1. DIFFUSE YOUR VENTS The next time you replace air filters in your home, add a few drops of your favorite essential oil scent onto the new air filters. Try Frankincense essential oil! If you have floor vents, dab a few drops onto wooden clothespins and clip them to the underside your vents. The wood will soak up the oil. When your a/c runs, air will flow over the clothespins and through your filters, circulating the delightful scent throughout your entire house! Refresh with more drops of essential oil as needed. This works great for your car air vents, too!
not for tiny pests. To keep spiders and ants from moving in, use this peppermint oil mixture! Combine 15 drops of peppermint essential oil and a cup of water in a spray bottle. Shake, then spray! That’s it! You can spray around your doors, baseboards, windows, and in the corners of each room. Spiders and ants hate the smell of peppermint, so this repellent works great! Be careful! The goal is to get the smell of peppermint into the areas that you spray. Be aware of oversaturating your surfaces. You don’t want them to be wet. A sheer mist is just fine.
2. FRESHEN WHILE YOU VACUUM Does your vacuum cleaner smell when you are running it? Here’s a simple tip. Add 2-3 droplets of lavender oil to a cotton ball. Place the cotton ball in the clean canister or fresh vacuum cleaner bag. If your vacuum has a washable filter, put some essential oil on the filter. As you vacuum each space of your home, the fresh scent will spread along with you!
5. DIY MOTHBALLS Speaking of repellents, you can prevent your clothes from becoming moth chow with these DIY natural mothballs. Just place a few drops of cedarwood oil on a few cotton balls and put them in your closets, drawers and any other areas around your clothes. If you’re not a fan of cedarwood, an alternative method is to use 2-3 drops of rosemary and clove bud essential oils. Bye bye, moths, and tops full of holes! Bonus: This will also keep your clothes smelling fresh!
3. NO MORE TRASH CAN FUNK Add two droplets of tea tree and lemon essential oil to a cotton ball and place it at the bottom of any wastebasket. The lemon and tea tree oils will work as a disinfectant and deodorize trashcan odor, keeping your bins fresh and clean! 4. WARD OFF CREEPY CRAWLIES You want your house to be inviting to your guests, but

6. TOILET PAPER DIFFUSER Add a few drops of your favorite fragrance of essential oil on the cardboard tube of your toilet paper roll. Each time the paper is used, the scent of the oil will disperse into the air. It’s simple, yet effective! Now everyone in the house can participate in refreshing your home.

DECOR CREATE A SANCTUARY
by Billie Comeaux
Creating your own private oasis is not as difficult as you might think. Your sanctuary begins with selecting a palette to help create the calm, serene atmosphere you desire. Suggested colors to work with: • Icy blue. Feel soothed and relax to the color of the sky. • Sage or pistachio green, taken from nature. • Soft grey works great to tone down harsh whites. Use many shades of soft grey or off whites to help create a restful escape. Your bedroom should appeal to your senses. Add scented candles, mood lighting, fine fabrics and luxurious bed linens. Lamps on a bedside table should be tall enough to read without showing the light bulb when you’re lying in bed. If you love reading, place a floor-to-ceiling shelf near your seating area and make sure it’s well lit. Your heirlooms, pictures, and treasures will help make your sanctuary more personal. Comeaux is co-owner of American Factory Direct Furniture.

WHAT IS ONE OF YOUR BEST PROJECTS? My favorite project is the exterior of my home. We live in a great subdivision and we love our neighbors, but our curb appeal was far from great. I decided that I wanted to lime-wash my brick to give it an updated, elegant look. The end result has been amazing. I've had so many compliments and inquires on how to DIY your brick. WHERE DO YOU DRAW INSPIRATION FROM IN YOUR DIY WORK? I love, love, love Pinterest. I have so many Pinterest boards, which most are secret. Another reason I started making things was because I would see something I'd want to bless someone with and it would be out of my price range so I would figure out how to do it myself. Some other inspirations have come from a close friend, Gingerlyn Wallace, who owns G booth in Hattiesburg. HOW DO YOU MAINTAIN A WORK/LIFE BALANCE? I believe in being flexible. Being a mom, wife, teacher, volunteer, and home maker takes a lot of time. I believe that we should live life to the fullest and enjoy each day. I try and prioritize my time by most important, family and friends, to DIY projects, just for fun.

Daniels, I was married to someone who abused me verbally and physically. I never thought that I could love or be loved by someone just for being me. After I left my ex-husband, I was in the hospital for five weeks. Part of my rehabilitation was art. I remember sitting under a chestnut tree painting and wondering how I had gotten myself into such a bad place. While I was painting, God spoke to me and told me to trust Him and that He was in control. I eventually healed from my bruises and scars and God made me a new person. A few years later, I met my now husband of almost 10 years and we couldn't be happier. I think that a lot of my projects help me de-stress and feel refreshed. Even though it's work I always love my DIY projects. I don't think I'll ever stop making things new. I always look at something that's outdated, dirty and broken and think what if I cleaned it, painted it and made it beautiful again. I think sometimes that God views us the way I view old furniture. He looks at the potential at what we could be instead of the mess that we actually are.

Spring clean your makeup by Jackie Merlau | jmerlaumakeup.com We all know the ever-popular slogan, “Spring cleaning” but have you ever considered it for your makeup? I have put together a few suggestions for organization and sanitation. HEALTHY & HYGIENIC One word: Bacteria! It grows in your creams, liquids and within those little bristles on your brush. It can be the reason your skin keeps breaking out or that you have had a sty in your eye. • Did you know that your makeup has an expiration date? On the back of the package, you will find a small symbol on the container, which has a number and an “M” beside it, representing the number of months your product will be good for use. Start being more aware of this and definitely toss your existing products if you know it is in fact overdue. For instance, your mascara will be good for three to six months, while your powders can last up to three years. • If you’re using disposable sponges, be sure to toss these after each use, while beauty blenders need to be washed daily. Sponges are a breeding ground for bacteria. • Deep clean your brushes at least once a month, but use a brush cleaner more often to keep the brushes sanitized and fresh. I love to use MAC Brush Cleaner ($15) for a quick clean. It breaks down the product while sanitizing and conditioning your brushes and it dries quickly. To deep clean, you can use Dawn dish soap and cold water. Be sure to lay your brushes flat while they dry and then buff them through a brush cleaner to ensure they are also getting sanitized.
MAC Brush Cleaner
ORGANIZE & DECLUTTER The biggest way to stay sanitary and clean is to organize and keep everything in its place. You don’t want brushes lying on a bathroom counter or old expired makeup in a drawer mixed in with the new. • Magnetic boards are a great way to clear up counter space. You can get a piece of metal and add a cute frame to it. Then hot glue small magnets to the back of your makeup, to attach them to the board. • Create a cute brush holder out of a jar or canister. Add beads or marbles into the container, so the brushes will stand up straight. • Acrylic organizers are gracing the shelves of many department stores and are fairly inexpensive. You can get some that sit on your vanity or others that are specific to organize your drawers.
WHAT I CAN'T LIVE WITHOUT
Skindinavia Setting Spray ($39) This spray sets and holds your makeup for 16 hours and controls shine. After moisturizing, I like to spritz it on my face as a primer, before I apply my makeup. I then use it as a final product to set the look and ensure a stronger hold on the hot humid days!

FASHION WATCH
Stay cozy, yet classy!
by Jerika Vincent
Shopping for spring fashions can be confusing for Coast residents because of the dramatic temperature changes here. Waking up each morning can be a constant struggle for finding that perfect wardrobe, because of it feeling like summer one day and the next day like winter. There are many ways to dress during these weather conditions and still be able to rock the spring fashions. Carrying a lightweight sweater with you would be ideal to stay warm, and by wrapping it around your waist, you can create that new stylish look. You can’t go wrong when adding layers to your outfit, which will give it a more casual vibe. It's great to shop for new fashion additions, but sometimes you can mix and match those items from your own closet. It can be a great way to create new outfits from the items that already have been purchased. It is completely OK to wear something carry a lightweight more than one time. I believe in wearing your sweater wardrobe multiple times, because of this mix and match theory. For example, you can wear the same leather jacket every day if you change up the dress or mix and outfit underneath. Also, you can change the shoes or match fun layers jewelry to any outfit to create a whole new look!

STAY CLASSY If you are going out for a business meeting, then make sure to wear a skirt that stays below the knees. Choosing the correct wardrobe can make a big difference on scoring that interview and getting the position of your dreams. How to make an impression on a date? It would be best to wear something classy, but also flirty. There is nothing wrong with showing a little skin during the spring, but make sure it showcases the right areas. Wearing an off-the-shoulder dress or blouse would be something that can be an attention grabber, but not send the wrong message to the other party. Spring is when everyone becomes more active. Whether you’re headed out shopping or simply going to brunch with friends, make sure to dress appropriately. Wearing athleisure wear is a popular thing on the West Coast and is making its way to the Gulf Coast this spring. More people are starting to shop and have brunch in their designer workout clothes or leggings with a pair of running shoes. Staying comfortable, but sill stylish is the new look for spring 2018.

hair
spotlight on Krystal Ben
visionary More than just a hairstylist, Krystal Ben sees herself as true "hair visionary." Ben, better known as "Krissy," has always believed that all women are naturally beautiful. Just as she knew that some people were blessed with the gift of enhancing that beauty, and she happened to be one of them. From a very young age, she discovered her talent for making women feel and look more beautiful, almost like a doll (in the words of her longtime clients). It was the lack of viable opportunities for women of color in her home state of Flint, Mich., that drove her to become the change she wanted to see in her community. Ben committed herself to developing and pursuing her true passion for beautiful hair. She began creating her own styles and techniques to help each client embrace their unique and natural beauty while promoting healthy and natural hair growth. Ben specializes in developing healthier hair, but she is known for her celebrity style wigs. Her readymade wigs wigs started a buzz after they were featured on WLOX as a breast cancer giveaway. Her glam-overs are a full package deal that include a wig install a glamorous make-up application to complete the look.

GCW: How did you get started? KB: I studied here on the Coast at Chris’
Beauty College and started my career as a stylist at JC Penney salon.
GCW: What motivates you? KB: Most of my motivation comes from
my family. I’m so grateful to have that extra push from them as well as their Krystal Ben, owner support. I can’t forget my awesome dolls; of Hair Fetish they help keep me on my toes with the lasted trends.
GCW: What do you specialize in? KB: I specialize in giving women their
confidence back when it comes to their hair. Whether it’s healthy hair, natural hair, or a protective style I offer it, but I am known for weaves and wigs.
GCW: What are your top beauty favorites? KB: I would have to say my top three
beauty favorites are: • Heat protection spray: It’s a musthave. I used it on each and every one of my clients. • Strip lashes: Nothing complements a full face like a good pair of lashes. The natural wispies are my go-to lashes. • Last but not least, my curling wand; from big waves to tight curls, I absolutely love wands curls and the overall look.
GCW: What are some hair trends for 2018? KB: I will be doing more wigs in all Model: Shavon Banks Photographer: Brian Pearse Wig by: Krystal Ben
different styles. From the short Toni Braxton cuts to the long locks like Beyoncé. I plan on doing it all with no limits.
Tip: ALWAYS BE GENTLE
No matter how you choose to style your virgin hair extensions, I suggest that you care for it like your very own. Avoid damaging hair with excessive tugging, pulling, and twisting while combing and styling hair. I recommend using a paddle brush, wide-tooth comb or just your fingers to separate hair strands on a daily basis. Starting from the ends of the hair, simply slide fingers or comb down and through the hair gently until you reach the top.

The art of transition By Denise Jacobs | Shoofly.com Photos by Lisa Loth
Mosaic artist Elizabeth Veglia is best known for her award-winning public mosaic projects — extraordinary pieces of public art. Now she's focusing her artistic energies on smaller scale works of art-to-wear. Like many of us of a certain age, Veglia has been transitioning and downsizing. She is best known for her mosaic installations on the Gulf Coast, and her work can be seen at Stennis Space Center’s museum, in the lobby at Hancock Medical Center, alongside the Ocean Springs’ bridge, at the entrance to the Bay St. Louis Library, and at the Waveland City Hall complex. She has numerous other mosaics in schools, churches, and public buildings throughout Mississippi and in New Orleans and has worked with an international group of artists on installations in New York City and in Barcelona, Spain. About five years ago, Veglia decided to transition into a creative genre more lightweight than mosaics. “Mosaics make for heavy work,” she explains. “And they require cement, tiles, saws — things that weigh a lot and require a lot of space.” In the past, Veglia stood to assemble the mosaics for a project, then in the installation phase, she worked in the hot sun, on her knees, elbow deep in a bucket of mortar. In the present, she sits in her studio, a spare bedroom shared as an office area with Billy, her long-term life partner. And in this small space, the magic happens. Here Veglia meticulously designs unique hand wrought jewelry using semi-precious stones, silver, and bronze— small materials, small storage space and small tools. “At this time, all my mosaic supplies and tools are in storage,” she says, “And making jewelry is a welcome and lightweight creative counterpart to making mosaics—wonderful for now! And painting, I have always painted, and it doesn’t have to take up a lot of room.” Most recently, Veglia has been spinning and twisting silver and bronze wire around semi-precious stones like labradorite, apatite, agate and amethyst in the process of creating necklaces, bracelets, and earrings. Listening to the stones and feeling their energies results in a blending of her creativity and the stone’s attributes. One collection is heavily influenced by the fluid, watery Caribbean blues of aquamarine, amazonite, Chalcedony, lapis lazuli and jade. At the other end of the spectrum, the Primal Collection features contrasting blacks and whites. Veglia also works with crystals. “I am so glad that crystals are popular now,” she says. “I love the sparkle.” As to the transition in art forms, Veglia possessed many “transferable skills to work with.” She taught herself what she needed to know, beginning with beading, and moving on to wire creations. She plans to eventually learn to solder and set stones. At this time, her creative space has transitioned from the 700-square-feet studio in a Bay St. Louis property she and Billy sold in June, to a small house. Earlier in the year, the couple sold a home on Rotten Bayou that they had lived in for 13 years, a place that included a 1,600-square-foot studio.

Veglia says that downsizing feels good. “We have a living room, a kitchen, one bathroom and two bedrooms. My part of our shared space is perhaps 50 square feet.” She laughs and says the move has been a test of their long-standing relationship. “Could we share a bathroom? Yes, we could.” “Could we work together in one room, this jeweler and her contractor/realtor partner? Yes, we could. Sharing a small space is a testament to our relationship.” And, as to the art, life in transition has offered Veglia the opportunity to focus on the solitary artistic mode of a jeweler and sometimes painter. It suits her. Veglia’s collections went on sale at Bay Life Gifts in celebration of its grand opening at The Shops of Century Hall in February. Plan to be dazzled.

Callie's Boutique
A dream for my children's future Amanda Hooper said she had always dreamed of owning her own business, but those dreams took a backseat to her top priority of being a mother to her four small children. “My dreams were not about my wants but were about my children’s future,” Hooper said. “But that’s when it hit me. I wanted to build something for them to have one day. My favorite quote is, ‘If you don't build your dream, someone will hire you to build theirs.’” So, she shared her dream with her husband, Jason, who she said is her No. 1 supporter, and together they developed a business plan. “He encouraged me,” she said, “and gave me the financial support I needed to open up Callie’s Boutique.” After praying about it, Hooper said, the couple decided on the right location. “We wanted to be part of the Ocean Springs Community, and we were willing to wait until we found exactly what we wanted,” she said. They finally found the perfect place and opened Callie’s Boutique at 1306 Government St., Suite 3, in Ocean Springs, in August 2016. Callie's Boutique offers trendy affordable clothing and accessories, including a variety of items for Juniors, Misses and Curvy Sizes, as well as special gifts for special occasions. “We have been extremely blessed by the warm welcoming we have received since opening,” she said. “God has opened doors we never thought possible.” She said she loves being a part of the Ocean Springs community and that the community has welcomed her and her business with open arms. “Being open for such a short time we are blessed that our shop as taken off so quickly,” Hooper said. “But I truly believe it’s because we don’t have just customers and sales, we have lasting relationships with those who walk into Callie’s.” She said having a business has enabled her to help others in the community. “I make it a priority to help others, because I feel we are not deserving of our blessings if we don’t help others in return,” she said. Every other month Callie’s Boutique hosts a benefit or a fundraiser to help a family who has a child going through a serious illness, she said. 88

Amanda Hooper, owner of Callie's Boutique
“I believe you reap what you sow,” Hooper said. “I have been very ill this past year and a half and the Lord has blessed my family with helping us through this difficult year. I am no more deserving than anyone else. And I am so incredibly thankful every day I am here to see my children grow and continue to pray I will continue to get well.” The Hoopers said they hope to expand the business within the next five years. “We are blessed and thankful for your support,” Hooper said, “for all the friendships, and for shopping at Callie’s Boutique and helping us help those in our community. We are proud to be part of the Ocean Springs Community.”

Taste Catering Gulf Coast Weddings recently chatted with Chef Patrick Heim, owner of Taste Catering and Personal Chef Services, a family-oriented business that not only serves some delicious fare, but also loves to serve the coastal wedding market with excellence.
GCW: Please tell us about Taste Catering and Personal Chef Services.
TC: We are a full-service catering business that opened in 2012 and is geared toward all your catering needs. We have experience with weddings, business catering, small or large private parties, and private dinners. We take pride in our attention to detail and are able to provide a large selection of foods to cater to any need.
GCW: Before opening your catering business, what was your background in the food industry?
TC: I have been cooking all of my adult life. I first found my love of cooking while serving in the United States Marine Corps. After serving in the USMC, I continued my love and passion of creating great food. I have worked for other catering businesses and restaurants in the area, including Memphis Q, La Cucina and Beau Rivage banquets. After many years of being able to perfect my skills, I was determined to start my own catering company. It was shortly after Hurricane Katrina when I was given an opportunity to start to create a name for myself on the Gulf Coast.
Chef Patrick Heim
GCW: What are some signature items on your menu?
TC: Gulf Coast Crab Cakes, Shrimp and Grits, and Southern Fried Chicken and Waffles, to name a few.

Bye, bye toxins! by Andrea Yeager
104
March-April 2018
The holidays, followed by Mardi Gras and Valentine’s Day, pack on the pounds or even a best cause belly bloat from all the sugary and starchy foods. That sluggish, heavy feeling can cause digestive issues as well as slowing down organs such as the liver, which must work much harder. Lightening the load with cleansing fruits, vegetables and drinks can help the body run more efficiently and help organs do their own regular cleanse. Detoxing is not torture. The word detox sounds drastic, but really isn’t. It simply means adding foods such as citrus, raw vegetables and beverages to daily meals. This is a way of cleansing the body and possibly losing a few pounds along the way. Neither of those sound bad. A grapefruit half before each meal can rev the metabolism. According to “Eat This, Not That,” researchers say grapefruit switches on the fatburning cells and can even whittle the middle in about six weeks. Just a word of caution, grapefruit does not work with some medications; so, check with the doctor before trying this detox. Citrus of all varieties helps purify the body. Citrus fruits are high in the antioxidant de-limonene, which stimulates liver enzymes and causes the liver to rid the body of toxins like it was made to do. Eight glasses of lemon water throughout the day can
do the trick. Real Southern foods such as collard greens, sweet potatoes and beets are good for detoxing, too. Steamed collards, according to the journal “Nutrition Research,” can help lower cholesterol. Sweet potatoes add that glow to the complexion. Beets help detox the liver, too. Here are just some other foods that help rid the body of toxins, and they don’t taste bad either. • Hibiscus tea/white tea/green tea. • Wild salmon • Turmeric; note: this adds a strong spice, not unlike curry, to smoothies. • Spinach • Bananas • Avocados • Tomatoes • Kiwi • Nuts • Garlic • Broccoli sprouts • Greens of any kind, not just kale These foods can be eaten raw, in smoothies and simply steamed or eaten out of hand. A healthy smoothie at breakfast can jumpstart the body. In a check of Coast bookstores, dozens of books on body detox are helpful, while some are extreme others focus on detoxing naturally with foods.

ELDER LAW | BUSINESS LAW | REAL ESTATE LITIGATION
The “Social Security” program in the United States refers to the governmental program providing payments to supplement income for disabled people and Americans of “retirement age.”1 Due to the massive baby boom generation and people living longer since the program was implemented, it has been projected that, by 2034, Social Security may not be able to pay the full promised benefits.2 Therefore, although most politicians have promised to “not cut Social Security,” most recognize that something must be done to ensure its longevity and changes to the program are being implemented in 2018. One change being made to cut costs to the program is to delay the “full retirement age” used by Social Security to calculate the benefits.
ALTERING FULL RETIREMENT AGE Social Security’s version of retirement age, known as the “full retirement age,” when you will get 100% of your payout, is currently 66. In 2018, newly eligible retirees, who were born in 1956, will have to wait until they are 66 years and four months old before they will be considered at “full retirement age” and be able to receive 100% of their monthly retirement benefit. If you claim your Social Security benefits at any point between 62 and a month before your “full retirement age,” your benefits will be permanently reduced because benefits claimed prior to “full retirement age” are hit with early retirement or survivor reductions. Studies have proposed that millions of dollars can be saved by the government if the formal retirement dates for Social Security and Medicare are extended by two or perhaps even three years. Therefore, you can expect the “full retirement age” to continue to rise. Right now, the earliest you can apply for Social Security benefits is age 62; however, a person who begins claiming their retirement benefit at age 62 will receive only seventy-five percent as much money each month as if they had

waited until their “full retirement age” to begin claiming benefits. A person claiming a spousal benefit at age 62 would receive only seventy percent as much each month as if they had waited until “full retirement age” to claim benefits. If you wait until you’re 70, your monthly benefit will be higher. “Full retirement age” already is set to continue rising in the coming years for people born in 1955 and later; for instance, if you were born in 1960 or later, your full retirement age is 67. By simply raising full retirement ages, without adjustments to the percentage of benefits available, the government could experience savings but it will greatly impact Americans’ retirement plans. You must take this into consideration when you are doing your Estate Planning. A good Estate Plan should address any potential disability and your retirement years, not just plan for distributing your assets after your death. Should you RENT or BUY a house?
Provided by Benjamin F. Edwards & Co. and Angela Wolfe
For generations of Americans buying a house was seen as a financial no-brainer. You’d save enough for a down payment, find the house of your dreams and make steady mortgage payments until the house was yours. Today it’s not always so obvious whether it’s better to buy or rent. The simple rules of thumb aren’t so simple anymore. Whether you’re better off buying or renting will depend on your circumstances, but here are a few things to keep in mind: In the short run, rent. In the long run, buy. Buying a home by definition means incurring a lot upfront costs that will take time to recoup. Besides all the fees that are associated with closing on a house, the first few years mean that your payments are going toward your loan’s interest, not principle. If you sell during that time for the same price as you paid, you probably won’t generate a return on your money. In the long run, though, you do build equity in your house and your payments become a form of an investment. The question is figuring out how long it will take to get to that point. There are several free online applications that will help you calculate how quickly you’ll recoup your investment. Try them out before you hand over a down payment. Don’t assume that your house will skyrocket in value. Part of what drove the housing market in the mid-2000s was the way home values jumped dramatically from year to year. Combined with low interest rates, it was an easy investment decision. Now it’s not clear that homes will appreciate at the same rate in the foreseeable future. The home you buy could go up in value — or it could go down. So while in the long run your home is likely to be an investment, it may not produce as great a return as you’d expected in the past. Don’t overlook other costs associated with home ownership. New homebuyers are often shocked at how much money the need to spend to maintain a house. Lawnmowers, snow blowers, drills — the costs add up. And when the water heater goes out or the air conditioning unit is on the fritz, there’s no landlord to come to the rescue. You’ll need to not only buy the replacements, but also arrange a time to meet the repairperson. Compute the actual tax benefit. The federal tax code encourages home ownership, but it may be less of a benefit than you realize. For instance, the deduction available to you for your mortgage interest payments and property taxes along with your other itemized deductions has to exceed the standard deduction for it to be an economic benefit. That standard deduction typically rises year to year, so it may

A different kind of CPA
Consider how likely it is that you’ll want to stay put for many years. Previous generations of Americans expected to live in their same community for decades. Workers stayed at the same company until retirement, and their children were likely to remain in their hometown. Today, mobility is commonplace and social norms about housing are evolving as well. One factor you should consider when buying a home is whether you’ll stay where you are for years to come. This article is provided by Angel Wolfe, a financial consultant at Benjamin F. The of computer rainbow pinwheel thingys
As a writer and coach, my computer is an extension of my brain. I use it incessantly and I have created hundreds of documents—scripts, manuscripts, coaching records, PowerPoints, handouts, articles, blogs, etc.—you get the picture. In addition to creating 50 million documents, I have also created images for my social media posts and marketing materials. Needless to say, my computer is chock full of stuff and its storage is bulging. Running a virtual coaching practice means that I am always on the Internet! At any given moment, there are at least 10 tabs open on my browser. I open and send 50 million emails and open, download, and send another 50 million attachments. My efficiency is as good as my computer’s speed processor thing-a-ma-doochie. To no surprise, one day my computer was running a little sluggishly. The poor thing was taking forever to open documents and I was spending way too much time watching the little rainbow pinwheel thingy instead of getting anything done. Finally, I recognized that the sluggish response time could be easily fixed. I needed to close out unused browsers, apps, and open documents, clean out my downloads, and empty my trash. Once I did that, my computer began to perform at optimal speed and my efficiency returned. Wow! My computer taught me a great lesson!
my purse to avoid the temptation of looking at my social media feed or some other worthless pursuit of knowing more!
SOMETIMES YOU NEED TO CLOSE OUT UNNECESSARY STUFF THAT IS DRAINING YOUR ENERGY!
My computer was also sluggish because its memory was overloaded. We “download” millions of megabytes of data in our heads each day. We are inundated with information from all kinds of digital places—emails, social media feeds, text messages—whatever information you want, there’s an app for that! It is the best of times and the worst of times for getting information. You can literally be notified 24/7 about the latest happening in entertainment, sports, news, work, your friends, and the list goes on and on. As information is downloaded, it must be processed. What do you do with all of that information? Where does it go? How does it help you? How does it add value? Not only do we download the information, but we also download the message. Sometimes it is a good message and other times, it is a message that
One reason that my computer was resorting to the dreadful pinwheel of waiting was because it was trying to do too much at one time! How many times are we multitasking, overbooked, overworked, and under-rested? We think that we need to pile more onto our plates in the endless pursuit of productivity. Adding more does not really add more. It takes more away. We are doing more and missing out on the chance to connect with people who really matter. We are getting more done at the cost of losing relationships and missing out on meaningful experiences. What would happen if you put your phone down during dinner or lunch with your loved one or friend and really paid attention to them? I am talking to myself here. It’s sad, but I have to put my phone in
The other danger of doing too much is simply overtaxing your brain. You really do need to relax, rest, and renew. How many times do we pack our day “off ” with a to do list that rivals any work day task list? Certainly, we should carpe diem , but we also need to take care of ourselves before we end up requiescat in pace ! If you overwork a hard drive, you can replace it or buy another computer. If you overwork your hard drive, you cannot just buy another you! There is a big difference in working smart and working hard. Sometimes you need to power down in order to power up! Sometimes the less you do at one time, the more focused and impactful you can be. You may have a list of 100 things to do, but do you really need to try and do them all today? Be reasonable about what you want to do and what you can do. Your mind and body will protect themselves from your zealous desires. When you don’t have sense enough to sit down and rest, your body will shut down. You take a huge risk that the shut down will be RIP for real! SOMETIMES YOU NEED TO CLEAN OUT YOUR DOWNLOADS!

Spring Renewal
5 ways to renew your mind by Crystal Scretching
It's the season for spring cleaning! That time of year where you pull out furniture, remove dishes from cupboards and get to the deepest crevices of your home. But, have you ever taken the time to have a spring renewal to reset your mind? Here are 5 ways to give yourself a much-needed mental refresher. 1. THE SOCIAL MEDIA CLEANSE We can all find ourselves becoming consumed with scrolling social media feeds. But how do these behaviors affect us? Have you ever found yourself flipping through someone else’s highlight reel, only to step away and feel worse about your own life? Social media has great benefits, but just like anything else in life, it’s good to sometimes take a step back. I saw an Instagram post that read: “Self-Care Tip: Unfollow every account that makes you feel like you need to be someone else.” (Amen to that!) The beauty of social media is that we have complete control over what we want our feed to be. So, take time and follow accounts that help inspire, educate or entertain you. Anything else that doesn’t add value to your life, mute or unfollow it. Need a deeper cleanse? Take 3-5 days of complete detox from using social media altogether. 2. TAKE TIME OUT FOR SLEEP This may be one of the most simple, yet, easily neglected steps in mental renewal. Sleep is vital. We are a society that is rushing and busy and multitasking in every hour of our day. We prioritize our tasks but how often do we bump up sleep on the list? Many times we mistake hard work with what are actually unhealthy habits that deplete us more in the long run than replenish us. Schedule in time for yourself to rest. Remove distractions from your space. This time is for you to completely shut down. 3. CHECK IN ON YOURSELF Awareness is key. For us to even know what we need, we must give attention to ourselves, and check in. Set aside moments to ask yourself questions, such as, “What am I feeling right now? What do I need? What is calling me in this moment?” Allow yourself to go down a question and answer session to give you this insight. Answer honestly. 114 114
March-April 2018
This is just for you. You’d be surprised how many times you don’t even know you are in crisis or are yearning for something. These answers will reveal what self-care steps you may need to take next. 4. VISION BOARD UPGRADE Vision boards are when you write your dreams and goals, cut out images and words that support those dreams and paste them into a collage on a poster board. I personally love vision boards! Now, let's take this creative project to the next level. When imagining your future and what you want for yourself, connect with the feelings of what accomplishing those goals will bring. Ask yourself, “What would it feel like to land that job?” or “If I was living my best life, how would I feel when I woke up?” Now, find ways right now to cultivate these feelings as much as possible. Doing this will lead you quicker to realizing each vision. 5. A POSITIVE AFFIRMATION A DAY Much of the clutter in our minds comes from the thoughts we have about our lives and ourselves. What words come to mind when you speak about yourself? Are you uplifting yourself or criticizing yourself endlessly? The words and thoughts we feed ourselves eventually play out in our lives. So, let’s replace these negative words with ones that support who we are or who we strive to be. • Follow social media accounts that post positive quotes or affirmations • Hang up art that encourages you in a place where you’ll see it each day (T.J. Maxx has tons of cute options!) • In a journal, list things that you value about yourself. (Add this to your bedtime routine!) • Say positive affirmations out loud to yourself. Put some music on and be your own hype man!

Always a

A spotlight on Jessica Shular Chevalier compiled by Andrea Yeager Jessica Shular Chevalier

“Always be a stiletto in a room full of heels” is a bit of grandmotherly wisdom that has led one Coast hotelier to a successful career. “My grandmother, Helen Shular, baby-sat me a lot, and would keep me with her behind the front desk,” says Jessica Shular Chevalier, general manager at the Clarion Inn, located off Highway 49 in Gulfport. “I have pictures of me in my playpen behind the front desk.” Her grandparents and parents operated hotels and restaurants, and Chevalier grew up loving the business. “I would love to help the housekeepers clean when I was little, too. We also had restaurants and I loved taking each table a basket full of crackers and taking drink orders,” says Chevalier, who started taking reservations over the phone when she was 10 years old. “The people would always laugh when a child was taking their reservation and credit card information. Before we had electronic keys, my grandmother would let me grab the keys and hand them to the guest.” But it was her father, Michael L. Shular, who made her start work from the bottom up so she would know how to work and eventually manage each department in a hotel. When she was in high school and received her first car, her father had her driving to the hotels to clean guest rooms every day. “I love meeting new people, and you meet people from all over the world in the hotel business, says Chevalier, who at one time wanted to be an architect or interior designer. “I also enjoy the challenges of each day: You never know if a staff member will have March-April 2018 116

What’s your plan?
Randall was 35 years old and ran a successful technology company. His business was growing, he bought a new car, and he was settling into his new house. Life seemed great for Randall, especially when he asked his long-time girlfriend to marry him, and she said yes. Unfortunately, everything ended abruptly when Randall died a short time later on his honeymoon. This is a true story, but sadly, the story doesn’t end here. Because Randall was recently married, his will was not current. His mother and aunt inherited the business and soon went bankrupt. His new wife was left with almost nothing and lost the car and house. Thinking of Randall reminds me that we all need plans. At a minimum, we need a plan for our business and a separate plan for our lives. If you’re married, consider a third plan for the family.
BUSINESS PLAN
LIFE PLAN
My first business plan was a beautifully-written, well-formatted, 66-page masterpiece…which was absolutely useless. It sat on my shelf for over a decade collecting dust. Your business plan should be concise and should include: 1. Who you are – The core values of the business. The business DNA. 2. What you do – Your sweet spot. Use this as a guiding light and a filter. A successful business is more likely to die of indigestion than starvation, so you must learn when to say no. 3. Long Range Target – Where are you going? This should energize you, excite you, and scare you a little. It may also include a business legacy plan. 4. Marketing Plan – How are you going to hit your long range target? 5. Intermediate Target – 1-3 year plan to help you move towards your long range target. 6. Short Term Goals – 90-day goals to help you achieve your intermediate target. These should be SMART (specific, measurable, attainable, realistic, and timely), and each should be “owned” by someone in your organization. This plan should be short (mine fits on two pages), and it should be reviewed and updated every quarter. Personally, I like to print this plan and hang it on my wall.
While your business plan is usually created with the help of your leadership team (at your office), your life plan may be created with the help of your spouse or significant other. It should include: 1. A will: Your will is a legal document that expresses your wishes concerning the distribution of your property and the care of your minor children in the event of your death. It may also address your final wishes regarding your funeral. Talk to your attorney about creating a will or about updating it if it’s not current. Visit www.mywonderfullife.com for help in planning your funeral arrangements. 2. Big goals: I like to segment goals into multiple life areas (e.g. personal development, spiritual, family and friends, financial, recreation/lifestyle, service/contribution, retirement, etc…). Attaching timelines to each area is also helpful (e.g. list oneyear, 3-year, and 10-year financial goals). It may be helpful to list execution and accountability steps. 3. Personal Values and Mission Statement: It’s helpful to put some thought into what you stand for and why you get out of bed in the morning. A plan with a purpose is much more likely to succeed than a plan without a purpose.
FAMILY PLAN
If you have a family, consider creating a family plan which could cover family goals (including timelines) and family values.
Good luck, and remember that someone with a written plan is 70% more likely to reach their goals than someone without a written plan. www.gcwmultimedia.com

projects they'll love! VOLCANO EGGS Materials needed Hard-boiled eggs Food coloring Vinegar Baking soda Disposable cups 1 cup of water
My granddaughter, Lilly's, favorite are the volcano eggs.
Directions for dying Create baking soda paint using a tablespoon or so of baking soda, couple of teaspoons of water and some food coloring. Mix it up and experiment until you have the consistency you want. Grab a paint brush or stencil brush and start painting the eggs. Drop some food coloring splashes onto your eggs using a dropped. Pour vinegar on top of the egg and watch the “volcanic eruption all around your egg. Every time is different based on the colorful combinations. Repeat steps 2, 3 and 4 again and again until the kids get bored and are ready to move on to another egg. Pat off the excess vinegar lightly or just let them air dry. From toddlerapproved.com
NATURAL DYES
Add dyeing agent and 1-quart water and 2 tablespoons white vinegar to pot. Bring to a boil, then lower heat. Allow the ingredients to simmer for 30 minutes. Strain dye into a pot. Set raw eggs in a pot of strained dye; bring to a boil for about 30 minutes. Remove and dry eggs. These eggs are edible. Amounts of each dyeing agent needed: - Red-cabbage dye: 4 cups chopped cabbage - Turmeric dye: 3 tablespoons turmeric - Onion-skin dye: 4 cups onion skins (skins of about 12 onions) - Beet dye: 4 cups chopped beets - Coffee dye: 1 quart strong black coffee (instead of water)
* With beet and coffee dying, boil eggs first in separate pot. Boil beets and coffee separately. Cool. Drop hard-boiled egg in dye for 30 minutes.

EGGS DYED WITH SILK TIES
Ingredients 100 percent silk ties Stretchy white cotton, like a clean, old T-shirt Baking sheet Scissors Rubber bands Slotted spoon Uncooked eggs 1/4 cup distilled vinegar Lidded pot Instructions Cut the ties down the seam and remove the wool on the inside. Cut the extra fabric from the bottom of the ties to ensure a squarish shape. Next cut the white fabric into squares large enough to wrap around an egg and set aside. Holding a cut silk tie, color side up, place an egg, pointy side down onto the silk. Wrap the silk tightly around the egg, twist the top, and secure it with a rubber band. Next, take a white cotton piece and wrap the egg the same way you did with the silk. Twist the top tightly again, and secure with another rubber band. When the eggs are all wrapped, fill the pot with enough water to cover the eggs and add the distilled white vinegar. Cover and bring to a low boil for 15 to 20 minutes. Remove the eggs with a slotted spoon to a baking sheet and let sit until cool. Unwrap the eggs and see the beautiful shapes. From funnyisfamily.com

Tips to motivate children with ADHD
For parents of children with attention deficit hyperactivity disorder (ADHD), it can be very challenging to figure out exactly what motivates their students to study and complete homework. Erin Gibson of the Gulfport Huntington Learning Center says that parents should help their children get to know themselves as students and embrace techniques that work for them. “While parents will find it difficult, if not impossible, to change their children’s behavior, modifications to their study habits and learning environment are far more likely to be helpful,” says Gibson.
To motivate children to strive toward academic success, she suggests these five tips: 1. Establish good organizational habits. Nothing will hamper an ADHD child’s ability to succeed like weak organizational skills. At a minimum, children must maintain an orderly desk and backpack and create a reliable system for keeping track of papers and making sure they hand in all work. Parents should keep an eye on their children’s organizational skills and work with them to make adjustments whenever needed. 2. Follow a schedule. Time management can be hard for the ADHD student. A student planner with all test and project due dates is a must, but more important are the habits of using such a tool. Parents should help their children get used to estimating how long tasks will take and planning their time accordingly. They should also teach their children to pull out the planner at the beginning and ending of every class and record all assignments, due dates and other reminders. 3. Write it down. Whether an ADHD student has a smartphone or a paper planner, it’s critical that he or she gets into the habit of writing down important things the moment the student hears them. Parents can teach their children to keep a pad of sticky notes on them at all times, make good use of the reminder function on their phone or use some other method. Having a master to-do list (in addition to a more structured schedule in the day planner) is a good starting point when students set out to create a daily action plan.

4. Break tasks down. Learning to prioritize homework can be difficult for ADHD students. It’s best to divide longer, harder assignments into smaller steps that students can assign themselves and check off one at a time. This type of approach gives students manageable to-dos, which discourages procrastination and is less daunting.

5. Adopt the right study habits. Parents must help their children recognize the way they study and learn best and stick to those habits. It’s important to remember that an ADHD student’s preferred study methods are likely different than those of his or her parents. This is fine and to be expected. The point is that children need to do what is most effective for them. ADHD students with strong impulsive/hyperactive tendencies might work best when pacing or sitting on a balance ball. Those with mainly inattentive type ADHD likely focus best in a distraction-free room. It’s wise to test out different approaches and pay attention to what does and doesn’t work. It can be a challenge to find ways to successfully motivate children with ADHD, but Gibson reminds parents that establishing good routines is key. “It takes practice for children with ADHD to stay on top of established habits, but with diligence, these students will be successful,” she says. “With each small accomplishment, they feel good about what they have achieved and motivated to sustain those positive feelings.”

brings us down. There are days when my social media feed is just downright depressing! News of tragedy. News of discord. News of hatred. And then there is the drama. One thing that I have learned is that I have the power to decide what I download and what I don’t. Literally. Most of the information what we get, we must first subscribe to. This means we have the power to unsubscribe. Some of the information is not necessarily harmful, but it makes life noisy. Here’s another revelation, you are not required to open everything that is sent to you. 90% of my personal email list is deleted unread! Just junk in your feed! There is a freedom in controlling what gets your attention. I am easily distracted without electronic intervention. I call it my insatiable curiosity, but I am really just nosey. I love knowing what’s going on! But if I am undisciplined in my need to know, I will be up on all the latest information and behind in what really matters. So I have to turn off my notifications. I find that I really don’t miss anything. We also need to unsubscribe to social media, people and groups that don’t add value. And you can unfriend without dramatic announcements, by the way. If you have to announce how lucky your friends are to make the cut, they really aren’t that lucky. Finally, there are some people and apps that 126

you just need to block. Don’t even allow them to be a part of your life. SOMETIMES YOU NEED TO EMPTY YOUR TRASH! The last reason that my computer was slow as Methuselah was my overflowing trash file. Once I “deleted” unnecessary downloads, all of those files went into my trash. As a result, I had duplicates of large files and other unnecessary files taking up space on my hard drive. How many times are we harboring memories, grudges, pain, hurt, and relationships that are taking up space in our psyche and slowing us down? When you hold on to trash, it pollutes your thinking, contaminates your spirit, corrupts your mindset, and prevents your healing. In order to be truly free from your past, you must literally empty out your trash. Forgive so that you can release yourself from the bondage of decay. You may not forget what happened, but you can remove the negative association and empower yourself with a vision of the victory not a focus on the defeat. In every defeat, there is a victory—the survival thrival. OK, that’s not a real word, but you get the point. Thriving is the powerful moment beyond just existing, and the emergence into blooming where you were buried. Instead of a sad story, you have a great testimony. So empty the waste and make room
for the new! The biggest lesson learned from my computer that day was the fact that most of the issues that hold us back or slow us down are self-generated or totally within our control. You have absolute power to determine what and who you allow to influence you. You have absolute power to determine how present you are by removing distractions. You have absolute power over your past to move beyond surviving disappointment, defeat, and derailments to thriving. You have absolute power to remove negative thoughts from your head and release toxicity. You have absolute power to decide how you are going to seize the day without being crushed by unreasonable expectations or pursuit for perfection or meaningless experiences that don’t add value to your life or anyone else’s. Computers have a power button for a reason. Maybe yours is trying to remind you of a power that you have abdicated and one that you need to fully embrace. You've got the power! Stephanie D.
