Perhaps it happened during a quiet moment between just the two of you. Maybe he tipped off your friends and family, so your nearest and dearest got to witness your happy tears. However the proposal happened, congratulations on your engagement! The wedding journey is just beginning, and as any bride can attest, the to-do list can get overwhelming in a hurry. Our advice: Take the process step by step, and make the most important decisions first. Now that you have the ring, here’s what to do next:

S HARE THE NEWS

Tell your VIPs, either by phone or in person, before posting the news to social media.

SET BOUNDARIES

Be prepared for a deluge of opinions about when, where and how you should get married, and accept that you can’t please everyone. Avoid committing or agreeing to anything for the first few weeks while you and your fiancé hone your vision. In the meantime, receive suggestions gratefully, but don’t feel obligated to say “yes.”

SET A DATE

You can’t make many other decisions until you know when the big day will be, so first things first. You may immediately have a season in mind, or even dates that are meaningful to you and your significant other, so you can start there. Take care to avoid any scheduling conflicts for your VIP guests, and make sure you give yourself plenty of time to plan — bearing in mind that many popular vendors are booked a year or more in advance.

SET A BUDGET

Like your date, you need a budget before you can do much else. Be clear on who is contributing what, and communicate early and often, to prevent misunderstandings later. Head count greatly affects the bottom line (not to mention the size venue you’ll need), so tailor your guest list to what you can reasonably afford.

START RESEARCHING VENUES

This step may well determine your wedding date, as it may depend on when your preferred venue is available. When choosing where to hold your wedding, make sure the venue aligns with your vision, fits your budget and can accommodate your guest list comfortably.

MOST IMPORTANTLY — SAVOR THE MOMENT

Coordinating a wedding can get overwhelming quickly. This is a once-in-a-lifetime occasion, so pause to enjoy it before launching into planning mode.

Without a doubt, the COVID-19 pandemic impacted wedding plans across the globe. Whether having to postpone their nuptials, reduce their guest lists, or incorporate virtual options, couples certainly faced tough decisions. But despite the challenging time, many couples decided to get creative and keep love alive.

With the roll out of vaccines, there may be light at the end of 2021 for hopeful brides. In the meantime, here are five tips to consider when planning during the pandemic:

STAY UP TO DATE ON THE LATEST COVID-19 GUIDELINES

Gathering capacities, guidelines and restrictions fluctuate from state to state and can change often. So be sure to visit your state’s government website for the most up to date information. For Mississippi, visit https://msdh.ms.gov.

CREATE A PLAN B

Choose what’s best for you and your future spouse. Though you may not have the big wedding you dreamed of, there are several options available to make the day special. • Elopement is on the rise and has even become an Instagram-worthy trend. • Throw an outdoor soiree. Open-air and space allows for social distancing, reducing your risk. • Scale back your guest count for an intimate affair. • Celebrate virtually with a live stream. (Because what’s not on Zoom these days.) • Postpone or reschedule your date.

PRACTICE OPEN COMMUNICATION WITH YOUR VENDORS AND WEDDING PROS

During a pandemic, things can change in an instance. Be sure to know your vendors’ reschedule policy in the event of a COVID-19 exposure. And immediately convey any concerns or changes.

SAFETY FIRST

Let your guests know you care about their safety as they celebrate your big day. Make masks and hand sanitizers readily available. You can even have temperature checks at the door.

BREATHE

Know you are not alone, as we are all making adjustments during this unique period. Focus on the love and take everything one step at a time.

Proclaiming love during a pandemic

Coast couple marries in simple, elegant outdoor ceremony Like so many 21st century love stories, Alicia and Matt Compton’s romance began when they both swiped right. After meeting on the dating app Bumble, the couple had their first date in September 2017 — which consisted of dinner, drinks and a spontaneous drag show in downtown Gulfport. A night of laughter laid the foundation for a lasting love. For their second anniversary, Matt had a special weekend arranged at Centennial Plaza. “He booked us a room and made dinner reservations, but I ended up with a stomach bug our first evening there and asked him to please just take me home,” Alicia recalls. “He was so sweet. He brought me soup, Gatorade, and flowers to make me feel better.” Despite the setback, Matt pressed forward with his plans the following weekend, taking Alicia to dinner at the Blue Marlin. Afterward, during a romantic walk on the beach, he popped the question and got a resounding “yes!” from his bride-to-be. “I admire my husband’s strong character and positive outlook on life,” Alicia says. “He always knows when and

how to make me laugh.” Matt also has taught her the importance of forgiveness, she adds. “I love him not only for his good looks,” she says, “but because he is driven, passionate and loves me unconditionally.” The couple sealed their union on Sept. 12, 2020, at the bride’s parents’ home in Gulfport — having made the difficult decision to delay their nuptials due to COVID-19. They originally were set to wed in April and, given the state of the pandemic, they considered cancelling their postponed date, too. “I cried — a lot!” Alicia acknowledges. “It was very stressful but worked out just right with our new wedding date ironically falling on our third-year anniversary weekend.” The affair was simple, with no wedding party, minimal decorations, string lights and six acres of beautiful oak trees. The bride’s father, Charlie Kranz, escorted her down the aisle, and a good friend, Marcio Borguezan, officiated the ceremony.

“Our moms and dads worked so hard, and we will forever be grateful,” Alicia says. “We are truly blessed to have so many friends who were also willing to help.” Matt, vice president at Compton & Son Appliance LLC and Outdoor Living Center, and Alicia, appraiser analyst at Valbridge Property Advisors, reside in Woolmarket. He came as a “package deal” with daughters Blakeleigh, 8, and Adelynne, 5, she says, “who I have come to love as my own and absolutely adore.” She and Matt may have done things “a little backwards” the bride adds — having a family and a home before getting married — but she wouldn’t have it any other way. “Our love story is special simply because it is ours.”

am not the typical bridesmaid from tv shows, movies, and books, you know the one, the one that scoffs and eye rolls at every request made by the bride. The one that always has a follow up question to her follow up question. I am a bridesmaid that I feel every bride needs, the type to agree with and go with the flow of almost any reasonable request she makes. No pushback from me whatsoever. The goal is to get the girl down the aisle, and I take my job very seriously. A bride has a thousand things on her list to get done before the, BIG DAY, so what type of friend would I be to add another item to that list. Now I do give my opinion, but only when it is asked for, unless of course she is requesting something like yellow dresses with purple polka dots, then I insist on sharing my thoughts. A brides special day is just that, hers! If you ever feel that you cannot commit to the request of being a part

of that, it is best to be up front with that information to the bride at the beginning of the process, if you all are truly friends, she will understand. Nobody wants to ruin a lifetime of friendship over someone’s refusal to choose satin over chiffon, the request to wear white shoes after Labor day, or if you should serve egg salad instead of pimento cheese. As a young girl, I dreamed of not only my wedding day, but also being a part of the weddings of all my closest friends and family… that is until I became an adult with responsibilities. The cost of dresses, hair, make-up, and shoes, Oh my! Of course, I would NEVER tell the brides these things, I would grin and agree, and soon within the process of getting the bride ready for her, oh so special day, I would be reminded of the reasons she chose me to be a part of such an important milestone in her life. Hollywood would have you believe

You have grown up with, graduated with, caught each other’s tears, listened to hopes, dreams, and fears, seen each other at the lowest and highest points of your lives, why wouldn’t she want you to be a part of that? Southern boho bliss Couple designed special day to feel like ‘a comfortable Sunday afternoon’

Morgan Busbea, 33, met Ken Faucher, 36, in 2015 when both were working for a casino in Bay St. Louis. “Ken would regularly end his evenings with a stop by my area to catch up and laugh about the day’s events with his friend Denise, my coworker,” Morgan recalls. It wasn’t long, though, before Denise noticed that Morgan had captured Ken’s attentions. He asked for Morgan’s number, and the two began dating. They enjoyed each other’s company, but as sometimes happens with love stories, their path had its twists. In 2016, Morgan left the casino to manage a retail chain. She moved to Harrison County, and the two decided to take a break. But when love has a hold, separations don’t last long. “By 2018, we had decided that being apart was impossible and committed to starting a new life together in Bay St. Louis,” Morgan says. She was drawn to her beau’s outlook on life, saying, “There is no dream of mine that he would not give his very last to help me achieve.” And he built a loving bond with Morgan’s son, Layne. So, it was an easy decision when Ken proposed on Dec. 19, 2019. He’d invited her to have brunch with him and his mother, who was visiting from Florida. Afterward, he suggested a walk through Bay St. Louis’s Old Town to show his mom the sights, particularly Morgan’s family’s business, McDonald’s Lumber. “I was telling the story of how we had the business in the family for over 100 years when I looked in the window and saw a huge sign that read, ‘Morgan, I love you so much. You are my world. Will you marry me?’” Morgan

says. He then took her hand and walked her up the front steps, where he got on one knee and gave her the ring as his mom captured the moment in pictures. “Nothing could have been more special to me than having my proposal happen where so many of my happiest memories from childhood happened,” she says. The two were married on Oct. 4, 2020, at The Balcony, which has since closed. They both wanted a small, intimate wedding, which worked well since the ceremony was taking place amid the pandemic. “Every part of our wedding day was planned with little touches that were personal and focused on making the day precious to us as a couple and as a newly blended family,” Morgan recalls. “We agreed as people of faith that we wanted the person who married us to not only have a relationship with us, but also a relationship with the Lord. We agreed that my father, Dennis Lundberg, was the only choice.” They directed her father to include some things in the ceremony, then asked him to conduct some parts from his heart. “This made the ceremony one of kind and endlessly special,” Morgan says. She also holds dear the memory of her son walking 59

her down the aisle and giving her hand to Ken. After the vows, a soloist, Kaitlin Jewell, sang the hymn “Come Thou Fount,” while Morgan’s dad led them in a private prayer. “For the prayer, we joined hands with our parents, siblings and the bridal party,” Morgan recalls. “As I heard my father’s words, praying for our future, and Katlyn singing ‘I am bound for the Kingdom, won’t you come with me?’ I was overtaken with emotion.” Other meaningful memories include paying tribute to her late grandmother by wearing her grandmother’s earrings, and the attendance of Ken’s 91-year-old grandmother. Morgan describes her ceremony style as Southern boho. “I tried to make our day feel like a comfortable Sunday afternoon,” recalls Morgan. “We took the idea of a normal, Sunday brunch in the South and added some extra flair. We served brunch favorites like crab meat biscuits and gravy, shrimp and grits, ham and asparagus frittata, fruit-andyogurt parfaits and salmon-filled deviled eggs — and we even a giant charcuterie table.” They forwent a wedding cake and instead served different flavors of petit fours. She also incorporated a 60

custom floral backdrop that she designed with her florist. She and Ken were whisked away afterward via a golf cart amid a sparkler send-off. Today, the couple lives in Bay St. Louis with their teenage son, Layne. Ken works offshore, and Morgan left retail to earn a degree in human services, focusing on addiction. She plans to open a woman’s recovery home. “The home will be called Higher Ground Recovery Center,” she says. “Higher Ground was the name my grandmother had given to her dream home, and it holds deep sentimental and biblical meaning to me.” Speaking of the future, Morgan says, “We still have so many wonderful years left in our relationship, but we also had some great time to develop as individuals. I believe our bond is so special because we love freely like teenagers and have all the hope and ambition of a new couple in their 20s, so we are just excited to keep embracing the future together.”

'You never know what life has in store' After losing touch for nearly 40 years, couple reconnects and makes their love permanent

Although they didn’t see each other for 37 years, Larina Gayle Parker Long and Kevin Todd Woods were fated to rekindle their romance. The pair dated when they were teenagers at Harrison Central High School in Lyman, and decades later, in May of 2018, they reconnected at a high school reunion. “When we met again, it was like time had stood still,” Gayle recalls. “We picked up where we left off.” Now both 56, the couple decided to make their love official. On the night before Valentine’s Day last year, Kevin got down on one knee, presented a ring and asked Gayle to be his wife. “The thing I love the most about him is his thoughtfulness and kindness,” she says of her would-be husband, who owns Woods Pump and Well Services LLC. The pandemic complicated the couple’s wedding plans, like most pairs who planned to marry in 2020, and they were forced to delay and scale back their nuptials.

“We rescheduled our wedding twice and finally decided to just do it and invite immediate family,” Gayle says. “We changed from a buffet to a plated meal and kept the number of people at each table to four.” The couple initially had planned and paid for 120 friends and family to attend, but due to COVID, they reduced their guest list to 36. Nonetheless, the celebration — held on Aug. 29, 2020 — achieved the feel the pair was after. “We were going for romantic and intimate,” Gayle says. The wedding was held at Amour Danzar School of Ballroom Dance in Gulfport, and Gayle credits owner Barbara Watts with helping make the celebration successful — as well as safe. They were married by the Rev. Wayne Flurry of McHenry First Baptist Church, who they met taking ballroom dancing lessons. The pair practiced their steps for months leading up to their big day and performed a waltz at their wedding. The dance was one of the most special parts of the celebration for Gayle — as was seeing her groom cry during the ceremony.

The pair haven’t taken a honeymoon yet, but they plan to go to Hawaii when travel is safer. In the meantime, they have settled into married life at their home in Long Beach and serve as a testament to the enduring power of love. “You never know what life has in store for you!” Gayle says.

Wedding Planning checklist

10 - 12 MONTHS This timeframe is the most critical when it comes to planning your wedding. From a practical perspective if you are not an organized person, you should immediately hire a planner or a consultant to help guide you through the process. Many planners on the Coast also do fullservice design so you can have your cake and eat it too by telling the designer what you want and letting them assist you with all of the details. In some cases, a caterer or reception venue coordinator can help you with some details (linen choices, rental items, room layouts or seating plans). But generally, you want your chosen vendors to focus on what they are good at. These are the items you should deal with immediately because in most cases, there are limited options depending on the size of your wedding. During this time period you should: Book your ceremony and reception venues. Select and inform your attendants. Begin developing your budget. Start your guest list. Interview and book the following: • Planner • Band/DJ • Caterer • Photographer • Videographer • Officiant

7 - 10 MONTHS Purchase your dress. S elect your wedding party’s attire. Dress availability and alterations can take up to six months, so start this item as soon as possible. Have your guys fitted for their tuxedos as soon as possible as well. S et up your wedding website, hashtag and handles. R egister at a minimum of three major retailers with online offerings and at least one local gift registry store. P lan for your out-of-town guests. Reserve a block of hotel rooms at several different hotels with varying price points. These hotels should be as close to reception location as possible. S ettle on an invitation design and begin the proofing process. Your invitation may go through several renditions before it’s just right, so give yourself plenty of time. If you are planning on having your invitations hand addressed, hire a calligrapher now. S tart planning the honeymoon. Make sure your passport and any necessary shots are up to date if you will be traveling out of the country.

5 - 6 MONTHS M eet with the officiant and then plan your ceremony. If you are required to attend counseling or attend classes related to your particular faith, begin these as soon as your officiant says to. A rrange transportation for yourself and any guests. O rder your cakes. S tart your day-of timeline. Work with your planner and other vendors (DJ, photographer) to schedule any special moments you want to be sure are documented.

4 MONTHS B uy the shoes you will wearing and bring them to your first dress fitting. P urchase your veil. P lan a hair and make-up rehearsal with your stylist. Make sure they are available for your big day. V isit your DJ’s website and peruse his or her playlist. Be sure to let him or her know what songs you definitely want (especially your first dances) and more importantly, those you don’t want to hear at all. If you are planning on live entertainment, make sure they can perform your first dances or have the availability to play them digitally. P lan the rehearsal dinner. Settle on the guest list and reserve the venue. F inalize invitations and place the order. Some processes can take up to four weeks to print, so give yourself plenty of time to mail.

3 MONTHS D on’t leave your toasts to chance. Ask a select list of people to give toasts or speak at the wedding or rehearsal dinner so they have time to craft a wellconsidered speech. P lan the program and readings so your readers will have time to rehearse. S econd dress fitting. Plan to purchase your undergarments this same day. F inalize the order of the ceremony and reception. P rint programs. P urchase wedding rings. M eet with your planner or other wedding pros and finalize your day-of schedule. Type up the timeline and send it to all of your vendors (this includes photographer, caterer, baker, decorator and church coordinator). The more you plan, the less stress and drama there is on the day of. F inalize the menu and flowers. I f you are having a number of out-of-town guests, plan welcome gift bags. These need be as simple as a bottle of water, a few snacks and a list of some of the more popular tourist sites where you live.
