Memorial Leads the Fight Against
Lung Cancer. EARLY DETECTION SURVIVAL RATE AS HIGH AS 92%
Know the early warning signs of lung cancer? Symptoms of lung cancer may not appear until the disease
is advanced. Memorial is first in Mississippi to offer an exciting, early-diagnosis breakthrough. Using an innovative, robotic bronchoscope, Memorial pulmonologists can now search deep in the airways of the lungs to find small, difficultto-reach tumors and get a tissue sample for biopsy. The result is a more accurate diagnosis of lung cancer earlier, when treatment is most likely to be successful. Visit www.gulfportmemorial.com/pulmonology to learn more.

ADVERTORIAL
Memorial Leads Major Advancement in
LUNG CANCER DETECTION According to the American Cancer Society, up to 20 percent of people in the U.S. who die from lung cancer each year, amounting to roughly 30,000 individuals, never smoked. Even more alarming is that lung cancer is the most fatal form of cancer among both women and men in the country, causing more deaths than breast, colon and prostate cancer combined.
8 MILLION ARE HIGH RISK
As always, screening for high-risk patients can dramatically improve lung cancer survival rates, as finding trouble at an early stage makes it more likely to be curable. About 8 million Americans qualify as high risk for lung cancer and are recommended to receive an annual screening. Remember, if you are experiencing symptoms, it doesn’t necessarily mean you have lung cancer. Always pay attention to whether a symptom is a one-time occurrence or is persistent. Contact your health care provider when in doubt. That provider may refer you to a pulmonologist — a doctor specializing in the respiratory system.
GET CHECKED EARLY
Early detection is key for high-risk patients and can improve lung cancer survival rates. A chest X-ray usually is the first line of diagnosis, but low-dose CT screenings are the best way to recognize early stages of the disease. Depending on the results of your CT scan, your doctor may need a tissue sample to biopsy if a nodule or mass is detected.
MEDICAL ADVANCES
The last 10 to 15 years have brought many major advances in performing lung biopsies. The Auris Health’s Monarch Platform is a minimally invasive procedure used at Memorial Hospital. “We have had incredible success in diagnosing lung cancer using the Monarch,” says Memorial pulmonologist Dr. Summer Allen. “This platform allows physicians to view the inside of the lungs and obtain a tissue sample of small and hard-to-reach nodules on the edges of the lung.” The Monarch Platform combines the latest advancements in robotics, software and endoscopy (the use of small cameras and tools within the body). The physician uses a controller (like a gaming controller) to navigate a flexible, robotic endoscope to the outside of the lung with improved reach, vision and control.
Whether you are a smoker or never have smoked in your life, you need to be aware of the possible symptoms of lung cancer:
Specializing in pulmonology diseases, DR. SUMMER ALLEN and DR. JOSEPH BOSARGE are board certified in critical care medicine, internal medicine and pulmonology disease and utilize the Monarch Platform. To learn more, call Memorial Physician Clinics Gulf Coast Pulmonary Consultants at (228) 539-3356 or Memorial Pulmonary Interventional Clinic at (228) 575-1775 or visit www.WeAreMemorial.com.

“DON’T WORRY BE HAPPY” HIGHLIGHTS MENTAL HEALTH
The Mental Health Association of South Mississippi’s Don’t Worry Be Happy event may look different this year, but the gathering will go forward — raising awareness and championing the cause of mental health and wellness in the local community. The 13th annual celebration is set for 7 p.m. on July 17 at the Biloxi Civic Center and will be hosted by presenting sponsor Scarlet Pearl Casino Resort. “Mental health is such an important part of our lives that is often ignored,” says Kay Daneault, MHASM executive director. Many people got a glimpse into the world of someone experiencing a mental health challenge during the pandemic, she adds, bringing the issue to the forefront. The 2020 honorees are “a wonderful group of people,” Daneault says, adding that all are involved in some way with helping others, and several are mental health and wellness advocates. Each year the honorees compile a gift package to be auctioned off at Don’t Worry Be Happy. MHASM already was planning to host the silent auction virtually, and those unable to attend in person can participate from their homes through Event.Gives. Many organizations use this technology, which can be accessed from a mobile phone, laptop or tablet. Social distancing and other guidelines for Biloxi Civic Center will be observed and may change as the event approaches. For more information, call (228) 864-6274, email info@msmentalhealth.org or check the MHASM’s Facebook page for updates at www. facebook.com/MHASouthMS. MHASM provides a variety of services, including a day center and homeless outreach. The organization also offers workshops and virtual wellness and support groups that are open to anyone. Another program, Mental Health First Aid, is a national training opportunity that helps participants understand and respond to signs of mental illness. Those interested in learning more are encouraged to contact MHASM at (228) 864-6274 or info@msmentalhealth.org.

KELONDA TERRY
COMPETITION
KARAH LUNDY
& CONNECTION
Building student leaders through campus clubs & organizations The winning spirit is something both Kelonda Terry of Gulfport and Karah Lundy of Slidell embrace, especially when it comes to their chosen majors. Each won first-place awards in two categories at the Phi Beta Lambda (PBL) state competitions in February. They will compete in the business organization’s online national competitions this summer. Paul Johnson, accounting instructor and Phi Beta Lambda adviser on the Jefferson Davis Campus, said he and other members of the business department encourage students to get involved on campus, join professional organizations and be competitive. “We want our students to learn how to build networks in the business and education communities so that they have resources when looking for a job or advancing in their careers,” he said. “Involvement and competition build leadership skills and teach them to participate in teamwork, both vital in business careers.” Terry, a Business Management Technology major, said encouragement from instructors has opened her eyes about the importance of getting involved. “One of the most memorable accomplishments I have ever completed was winning first place in both Job Interview and Management Concepts at the 2020 Mississippi Phi Beta Lambda Leadership Conference,” she said. “It was quite an experience and an honor to represent MGCCC-Jefferson Davis Campus. I’m looking forward to competing at the national level.” Terry works as a certified veterinary technician, but her dream is to eventually own a business, which is why she decided to attend Gulf Coast. “The best thing about taking classes at MGCCC, for me, is the support and engagement I get from the business department. They are truly an awesome group of instructors,” she said. “There is one professor in particular, Dr. Joanna Alston, who has helped me reach a level of professionalism beyond the goals I set for myself. She has been the friendliest instructor and has mentored me in so many areas.”
Terry believes involvement in organizations on and off campus is important. “There is an abundance of student organizations that have piqued my interest at Gulf Coast because they provide a brilliant outlet to connect with individuals in similar majors and allow you to showcase your talents and participate in leadership roles. The Student Government Association and Campus Activities Board are also great organizations for students to join. Groups like these are beneficial if you plan to run your own business or even be a leader in a larger corporate environment because they give you the opportunity to find out what you are good at and to hone your skills.” Lundy is an accounting major, winning first place in Business Communication and in Future Business Executive at the Phi Beta Lambda state competitions in February. She will compete at the national event online this summer in both categories. “As for winning at nationals, I have high hopes for placing, but I also know there are so many other talented competitors I will be up against,” she said. “Either way, it is an exceptional experience and will help build my resume.” A member of the Band of Gold at MGCCC’s Perkinston Campus, Lundy is also a resident assistant in one of the campus residence halls. “Being involved in various campus activities and organizations is the best way to approach college,” she said. “Student organizations and the activities they host get you connected with people and places around campus, so if you happen to need something you already know people who can help you. It also helps to make the campus feel more at home, like a big family. Additionally, many organizations offer you the opportunity to participate in competitions like the one Kelonda and I are participating in this summer. The competitions help you develop and refine skills that you may need later in life.”

Debra “Debbie” Hess Denning “This woman is phenomenal, along with many of our other frontline heroes! She is a licensed practical nurse (LPN) and works at a Memorial clinic and at South Mississippi Regional Center. She puts the risk of her family’s lives and her own life aside daily to care for the public and sick people. She does it all with a smile and not one complaint. As I said, she is a phenomenal woman! I will forever look up to her.”

She is an awesome mother, grandmother great-grandmother and now a great-greatgrandmother. She has been through many trials and tribulations. She lost my father many years ago, plus two sons and two grandsons. She gets up every morning to help cook and serve hungry people at The King’s Kitchen. She has been there for many years. The pay is little in money, but great in blessings. Even through COVID-19, her faith in God keeps her helping others. If you go to the King’s Kitchen today, she will be there. She will be 83 in October and is still going strong. Love you, mom. You are my hero.”

astly different life paths led three exceptional women to the same destination: success. They are fighters, pursuing their goals with laser-like focus. They use their talents to empower and uplift others, earning their community’s respect and admiration. They are an example of what’s possible when women believe in themselves and don’t give up. Meet Shelia Rivers, Angelyn Treutel Zeringue and Erin Rosetti — three leaders who make the Coast a better place.

The Improver
Angelyn Treutel Zeringue strives to make things better Angelyn Treutel Zeringue doesn’t see her concerns and challenges as unique. She’s loved and lost — then learned to love again. She’s seen her children struggle and had to watch from the sidelines as they figured things out for themselves. She’s struggled with her weight and finding motivation to exercise. She’s poured her heart and soul into projects that didn’t pan out and had to start over after catastrophic weather events. But what sets the president of SouthGroup Insurance Services apart is her response to adversity. “I push myself to constantly network, learn more skills, communicate more effectively and become a better professional and a better person,” says Zeringue. For as long as she can recall, something inside was always driving Zeringue to work hard and go above and beyond. Spending several of her formative years on a pig farm in Louisiana led to many adventures and fostered a strong work ethic. After earning an accounting degree from The University of Mississippi, she worked in the oil industry as a computer systems analyst and financial analyst — climbing the corporate ladder and becoming a department manager. “Working in a major corporation was a great experience, and I learned much on hierarchies and protocols of navigating systems and processes,” Zeringue says. “I was also introduced to the concept of continuous improvement, and I have made that my life’s mission to keep making where I work and live better and better.” Thirteen years of commuting 120 miles each day to a high-stress, corporate job took their toll mentally and physically, so when Zeringue had children, she decided to join a small business in Bay St. Louis to start living a gentler, slower-paced life. “Was I ever wrong!” she says. “My life became even more filled with work, children, school support, community activities, family, homework, and more.” She became a Trusted Choice insurance agent and founded her own agency in 2012. She also got involved in almost every local organization “with the goal of making everything better.” “I feel that I have been very blessed throughout my life, and I strive to give back,” Zeringue says. Some of the entities she’s supported include local chambers of commerce, United Way, CASA, American Heart Association, Boys & Girls Club, Children’s Hospital and Rotary. She also invests time in mentoring others through women entrepreneur groups and youth STEM (science, technology, engineering and math) and leadership development programs. “It took many years, but I now recognize that I am unable to do everything on my own, and it is essential to develop the leaders of our future,” Zeringue says. “So, I work to educate, motivate, inspire and help others at every opportunity. I love going to work every day because I love helping people.” She’s also motivated by finding faster, better ways to do things, and she draws energy from improving processes. Some of her favorite reads reflect this mindset, including Steven Covey’s “7

Habits of Highly Effective People” and W. Edwards Deming’s writings on total quality management. “I am an organizational dynamo,” Zeringue says. “I love trying new ways and techniques and finding methods to get more done in less time. I am in my glory when I have too much to do!” In all her endeavors, even those that haven’t turned out as planned, Zeringue says she feels God has led her every step. When her marriage ended in 2010, she was determined not to become bitter and took solace in her faith, family and friends. She eventually found an ideal partner and adventure companion in her husband, Mickey, who she calls “the wind beneath my wings.” For anyone going through difficult times, she recommends taking a step back and devoting a day to doing something special just for you. Remember that you are loved, and you are special, she adds, and that you are not alone. “I always look for the good, the bright side (and) the learning (opportunity) from each situation,” she says, “and that is the winning combination for me.”
The Survivor
Despite trauma, therapist believes in happily ever after Dr. Shelia Rivers finds hope in situations where many others would despair. To start, she’s a domestic violence survivor. She had three children by the age of 15. She dropped out in the ninth grade, completing high school with a GED. As a divorced single mother, she once worked for wages of $7.50 an hour. “Every semester, I would register for another class and would promise my children that life would be better soon,” recalls Rivers, CEO and chief therapist of Rivers Psychotherapy Services. “With a lot of hard work and determination, (my) ultimate goal of higher education and never wanting to break my promise, I continued to pursue my education with a vengeance.” She pressed on with her studies while at times maintaining three jobs. Today, the mother of five and grandmother of seven holds a bachelor’s degree in psychology and master’s degrees in social work and public health – executive administration from the University of Southern Mississippi and a doctorate in social work from Tulane University. She’s also completed special training in trauma-focused interventions. “Remember everything in your life has a purpose,” says the seasoned therapist. “The good, the bad and the ugly all serve a purpose in developing your higher self.” The key to progress, she advises, is simply getting started and not looking back. Completing her undergraduate degree took Rivers 10 years of enrolling in classes as she was able. A social work internship at a women’s shelter proved to be a moment of truth, prompting a “total transformation of my personal story.” She began to see how trauma had affected her physical, emotional and mental health and embarked on a healing journey with a psychologist. She was diagnosed with depression and prescribed medication. “Therapy taught me holistic wellness, adaptive coping skills, (how to) improve my self–esteem, implementation of healthy

boundaries and how to heal from trauma,” she says. “Overcoming this tragic part of my life has been one of my greatest triumphs.” To promote peace and wellness, Rivers purposefully has made her environment an oasis, with a signature scent (eucalyptus spearmint), comforting colors and soft throws and pillows on chairs and couches throughout her home and office. These surroundings are conducive to her constant self-reflection and search for ways to improve herself and the lives she touches. Rivers’s greatest passion is encouraging other women to love who they are and reach their goals. Through her own trials, she found comfort in repeating an affirmation: “God is within her. She will not fail.” “I see myself as a survivor, and that is powerful within itself,” she says. “Surviving traumatic adversity and discovering who you are in the midst of wearing numerous titles speaks volumes (about) being a powerful woman.” Going into business for herself required a leap of faith — and Rivers now deems it “the best decision I had ever tried to talk myself out of.” Her Gulfport practice aims to help people with a host of issues live healthier, more productive lives. Outside of her therapy work, Rivers is a You Night advisory board member, adjunct professor at Tulane University, member of the National Association of Social Workers, founder of the Girl Get Your Life Together Holistic Wellness Program and author of “She Is” and “Power of Hope.” Her days consistently stay busy, and her mind never stops. “I’m always thinking about ‘the plan’ and the steps of ‘the plan’ and what’s next after ‘that plan,’” Rivers says. “I’m constantly making a list, and a list for the list, then crossing accomplishments off the list.” In every obstacle, she sees a lesson to be learned. To those who are struggling, she offers a reminder: “Your wings already exist; all you have to do is fly.” “Dreams come true,” she insists. “Ask me, I know.”
The Leader
Erin Rosetti uses her voice to advocate for the Coast One of Erin Rosetti’s favorite high school teachers once told her that when she speaks, people listen. That comment had lasting resonance. “Being heard is powerful,” says Rosetti, director of communications and engagement at Coastal Mississippi, “and I aim to use that power in a positive and meaningful way.” In her role, she showcases the region’s unique character and imparts its economic impact. “We have our own unique set of challenges in Mississippi,” she acknowledges, “but that has always made me more passionate to learn as much as I can about its history and to help change its narrative.” Hailing from St. Martin, Rosetti earned a degree in mass communication, with a concentration in public relations, from Louisiana State University. She applied for and won the Ruth

Edelman and Public Relations Student Society of America national award, recognizing achievement in women’s leadership, women’s studies and/or contributions in the field to promote women’s issues. The award included an internship that took Rosetti to Chicago — where she learned from some of the industry’s best. The outdoor-loving Coast native found it hard to adapt to the Windy City — especially the unforgiving winters. “As much as I loved discovering a new city, especially Chicago’s comedy and music scenes, testing every deep-dish option available and cheering on the Cubs, I felt as though something was missing in my professional journey,” Rosetti says. “Around the same time, I began noticing the amount of change and development in coastal Mississippi.” A position as public relations manager with Visit Mississippi Gulf Coast brought her back to the region, and after two years, she accepted a job as director of public relations and advancement at St. Patrick Catholic High School. While that role forced her to “flex new muscles and increase my skillsets,” Rosetti reminisced about her work in the hospitality industry. In 2019, she joined the Coastal Mississippi team. Recognizing that she’d developed some unhealthy habits after graduating college, she decided to address her physical wellbeing. She’s now a certified personal trainer at Brantley Ellison Fitness, where she teaches group classes, offers personal training and instructs boot camps. She also participates in various endurance events through Ainsley’s Angels of America, an organization that aims to build awareness about America’s special needs community. Wanting to further her education as well, Rosetti completed her master-of-business-administration program through LSU Shreveport in May. “Obtaining my MBA while working full time and maintaining side hustles was a huge triumph for me,” she says. “Many early mornings and late nights were dedicated to learning new skills and analyzing cases.” Simultaneously addressing the trials the Coast has faced in recent years, including the algal bloom and coronavirus, made finishing the program “that much sweeter” for Rosetti. But that doesn’t mean she’s ready to rest on her laurels; she has a running list of personal and professional aspirations, which range from learning American Sign Language to running a marathon. With her husband, Nick, she hopes to travel more and have a family. “The only way I know how to overcome difficulties is to stay consistent and disciplined …,” she says. “Goals keep me grounded and hungry to always work harder.” Rosetti is inspired by the tenacious women in her life, both family and friends. She considers a powerful woman one who maintains her integrity in spite of hardships, will not stand for inequality or injustice and uses her platform to uplift those around her. “I grew up learning that women are capable, talented, and determined,” she says, “and I’m fortunate to be surrounded by friends who have these attributes, always holding me accountable.” Nonetheless, Rosetti sometimes wonders if she deserves a seat at the table, and she knows she’s not alone in that feeling. “My coping strategy is to remind myself that I have talents and expertise, and that my counsel is valuable,” she says. Rosetti has contributed to numerous groups and causes in the community, serving as the Coast Young Professionals 2020 board chair and as a board member for the Boys and Girls Clubs of the Gulf Coast East Harrison Unit. She’s never been told that she couldn’t do something, which directly influenced her drive and determination. Hearing “no” is often the worst that can happen, she adds, so don’t be afraid to take risks. If it doesn’t work, try again. “Failure is part of the process,” she says. “Success never comes without sacrifice and moments of self-doubt.”

“Much of success has to do with our ability to grow and own our failures. We have to move through them, face our fears, and be developed by them. It is like a refining fire. Once we face our fears and allow our failures to shape us rather than defame us, we can conquer what was meant to hold us back! Then, we can move forward towards what was truly meant for us all along with more wisdom and grace” I feel like the key to success is being able to conquer one’s fear of failure and others expectations. So often, when we are successful, it has been proved to us through faith, trial, and error. If I hadn’t had the injuries or set backs I had in dance, business, fitness and LIFE, I never would have pursued more focused training opportunities. I wouldn’t have been able to serve my clients in more fulfilling ways that rejuvenate me as well! Hearing a client tell me “My back doesn’t ache anymore!“ or “I am so peaceful now!” after taking mindfulness, Pilates or yoga with me - is SO much more rewarding than “I feel hot now!” Though, they may have both and that’s great! The aesthetic benefits should always come after the total wellness benefits. It nourishes me when I know I am helping others at a mind, body, and spirit level!

Perfect partners: Mark and Mary Cracchiolo Spain
When he spotted Mary Cracchiolo at Jazzeppi’s Italian restaurant, Mark Spain requested a second champagne flute. Handing her the glass of bubbly, “I said, ‘Here’s to life,’ and from there, we started talking,” he recalls. “It was love at first sight pretty much.” At the time, Mark says he was looking for a woman who not only was beautiful, but intelligent — and Mary turned out to be all of that and more. A seasoned public relations and tourism professional, she oversees communications for MGM Mississippi resorts, which includes the Beau Rivage Resort and Casino in Biloxi and Gold Strike in Tunica. When she’s not working or keeping up with her son, Logan’s, activities (he recently earned his black belt in Taekwondo), she’s serving on organizations that include the Southeast Mississippi Chapter of the American Red Cross, the ARC Biloxi community advisory board and the Moontree Foundation board of directors. She’s also a former member of the Gulfport Planning Commission and past president of the Public Relations Association of Mississippi (PRAM) and PRAM-Mississippi Beach chapter. In May, she was elected president of Coastal Mississippi tourism. In addition to her drive, Mark found himself drawn to Mary’s sweetness and loving nature, Plus, he learned they have plenty in common — including birthdays 12 hours apart. The couple married in 2007, and despite demanding careers, they maintain a strong partnership as spouses and parents to Logan. “We share everything we do, from keeping (up) the home to job-related events, (which) are many,” says Mark, owner of Technical Dynamics. “We also have a great group of friends who are an encouragement as well.” Mary’s many positive attributes have made her well-liked and respected on the Coast, he adds, and as a fellow professional, “I’m extremely proud of everything she has accomplished.” “What makes her great is she always wants to make things better for everyone,” Mark says. “She’s loyal to a fault, and she’s the best wife and mother a husband and child could ask for. There are too many things she has done to count to make life better for herself and others.”

Eric Guess feels ‘blessed’ to have wife, Natalie
When Eric Guess tries to control the uncontrollable, his wife, Natalie, keeps him grounded and level-headed. “Natalie is a dreamer, and I love that about her,” Guess says. “She’s always thinking how to make things better, while I am trying to fix everything.” From the time the 3M Industrial customer rep met his spouse at the sushi restaurant where she worked at the time, he knew she was destined to be great — “greater than I will ever be.” The next day, he called his mom and told her he’d met the woman he would marry. “If you have ever met Natalie, you would know within one minute she is something special,” Guess says. In her professional life, Natalie is the executive director of Unmanned Coast and the Enterprise for Innovative Geospatial Solutions under the Magnolia Business Alliance. She is also a health and wellness coach and speaker. In 2018, Gov. Phil Bryant appointed her to the state Commission on Marine Resources, representing nonprofit environmental organizations. At home, Natalie is not only a wife, but a mom to 8-yearold son, Kai. Although they may be “polar opposites in personality,” Guess says he and his spouse enjoy many of the same activities, including fishing, farm life and baseball. The couple have been together since 2007, and Guess says his wife’s positive nature brings needed balance to his life. Her success, he adds, builds security for their family. “Natalie knows that she can be and do anything she wants,” he says. “On the flip side, Natalie has so many new ideas that it’s hard to see them all through. “The ones we decide are a great decision for our family seem to always work in our favor.” As a person, according to her husband, Natalie is the total package. What makes her truly great? Talk to her, he adds, and you will understand. “She is amazing at making things happen for my son and myself,” Guess says. “We are blessed.”

“Make your first impression permanent” Helen Cao, 33, is a young, successful entrepreneur who owned her first nail salon business at age 23. After opening her second salon a year later, she got into permanent makeup tattoo. “Beauty and fashion were always my passions,” Helen says. “I woke up one day and decided to get my eyebrows tattooed due to ‘hype.’ Disgusted with the results, I made several attempts to fix it, went through sessions of laser removals and even tried other artists, but I was still very unhappy. So, I decided to go to school to learn and fix it myself.” Three years into doing permanent makeup, Helen attended an extra class for microblading, which is now the most popular natural eyebrow enhancement technique. This also brought Helen’s success to another level. Six years into business, Helen has built quite a large clientele base. Being very passionate about helping women look and feel beautiful, Helen makes all efforts to continue her education in the beauty industry and offer the greatest, most up-to-date services for her clients, especially eyebrows. “It frames the face,” she says.” Having nice, pretty eyebrows definitely can boost a woman’s confidence. Being successful at such a young age has taught Helen that anything is possible if you’re dedicated, focused and don’t give up. Success is not measured by profit, but by happiness and the smiles on clients’ faces. It’s very rewarding, and that to Helen is an accomplishment. Helen also expanded into different areas because she enjoys networking and meeting new people. For your convenience, there are now four active locations in four cities. “I am very honored to be nominated by several people for Gulf Coast Woman’s ‘100 Successful Women to Know’ showcase,” she says. “I look forward to making more women’s brows beautiful. It is definitely a life-changing experience!”

“It takes as much energy to wish as it does to plan.” - Eleanor Roosevelt Lori Massey is the Coordinator for Mississippi Coast Crime Stoppers, a program that processes information anonymously from the community to law enforcement. She is also the Regional Director for Crime Stoppers USA, the national organization, where she advises programs in Mississippi, Louisiana and Alabama. Lori owes much of her success to her mother for her sense of community and a drive to achieve the most out of life, no matter what it hands you. A seventh generation Jackson County resident, she always knew she wanted to help her community and the state she loves. Mississippi Coast Crime Stoppers has been the perfect fit. Under Lori’s direction, the non-profit program increased tips by 104% and arrests by 600% in a 5-year span. The program has won many national and state awards including 2019’s Highest Tip Success Award in Mississippi. Lori implemented several new initiatives to aid in the organization’s success, including #9PMRoutine, where each night residents are reminded via Facebook to lock their doors and turn on their lights. She also started a training program for law enforcement on indicators of human trafficking and the University Cold Case Project, where Criminal Justice students rework cold case files from local law enforcement agencies. Her newest project may be her favorite, the Community and Crime Fighting Kiosk which will be stationed in Biloxi and will be the first of its kind in the state. She enjoys walking, gardening, cooking and spending time with her husband and three children.

“It made me even more determined to make a difference.” Domestic violence is an issue that is close to my heart. As a survivor, I have seen far too many accounts of women, and some men, being maimed, scarred and dying due to domestic violence. Last fall, during October, which is Domestic Violence Month, I decided to try and make a major impact by sharing some important statistics about domestic violence with others. One day, I received a notice from Facebook that one of my posts had been removed because someone had reported it as offensive. I was furious. I felt like someone was trying to silence the reality of domestic violence and attempting to keep the truth from being spoken. So I decided to take a stand. I recruited a group of about 10 women and men who were in my circle on social media and I invited them to join me for a “Stop Domestic Violence” Awareness Takeover Campaign. During the week of Oct. 7, all of them joined me in changing their social media profiles to a special image I had designed in honor of Domestic Violence Awareness. The campaign began with bold pops of the purple logo popping up on everyone’s pages at the same time. We also had sample social media posts that gave facts about domestic violence and hashtags “#stopthesilence, #IwillNotBemuted, #IamAVoice, #StopDomesticViolence. Soon, it began to spread as more people, moved by our efforts and encouraged by what we were seeking to accomplish, joined us in changing their profile images. By the end of the week, hundreds of people had joined in our social media takeover, including people in other states and those who I did not know personally, but who had been impacted by domestic violence and supported what we were doing. It was amazing and I will always be grateful for that anonymous person who tried to silence my voice as an advocate against domestic violence because it made me even more determined to make a difference.

I moved to the Gulf Coast 6 years ago not knowing a soul and opened up my business alone in one room in the back of a gym. I was determined to build a team with likeminded professionals who share a passion for bringing alternative, holistic healthcare to our local community. 6 years later we are doing just that, and we are only getting started. Recipero offers high standard, non-invasive therapies with minimal to no side effects for a variety of ailments. Our clients are invested in seeking natural solutions for their health and motivated to nurture their overall wellness. We strongly believe in offering clients a place of peace, health and healing where they can find an answer to their whole-body needs. We have grown our team to include over 25 years of experience in our field with four licensed massage therapists, a certified yoga instructor, a fat reduction specialist and we continue to thrive. We are passionate about what we do and strive to bring a sense of wellbeing and balance to our community. It is our goal that clients will be able to look to our center as an answer to natural self-care through empowerment and education. We believe it is our responsibility to grow with the ever-changing field of healthcare and we are dedicated to continuous learning in order to bring only the best to our clients. I am currently enrolled in school and in the next few months will be offering holistic health and wellness coaching to our list of services in order to deepen our client’s journey to being the best version of themselves.

“Helping to eliminate the stress” I have practiced law for over 20 years by initially working as a litigator in larger law firms handling defense of insurance claims; however, after my father developed Parkinson’s Disease, I became involved in the developing “Elder Law” area. My personal experiences as a daughter, professional, wife, and mother made me very aware of all the stressful issues that families face, which inspired me to form Coastwide Law, LLC. My boutique legal practice allows me to follow my passion by helping to eliminate the stress on individuals, families, and small businesses in the areas of elder law, trusts, estates and successions, business law, and general civil litigation by defending or bringing claims on behalf of my clients in Alabama, Mississippi, and Louisiana.

“Dream big! Leave the rest to me!” I’m extremely passionate about real estate and helping others realize that their dreams of home ownership are indeed possible! I believe that knowledge is power and that you must first become educated about the process. There are many people that don’t know where to begin when buying or selling a home. When working with a client, that’s always the first step – to have a conversation about the process to make sure they completely understand everything from beginning to end! There’s nothing more rewarding than helping someone purchase their dream home… especially when they never dreamed it could be possible! I have been a multi-million-dollar top producing Realtor for the past 4 years with Busch Realty Group and have maintained a position as one of the top 5 agents in the company. I work with both buyers and sellers. My goal is to help you find that perfect place to call home!

“Success isn’t about how much money you make, it’s about the difference you make in people’s lives.” Success, for me, will always be about making a difference in other’s lives. I have been fortunate to take my life story of unfortunate circumstances and overcome adversity. I use my story as a single mother, as a student, as a minority, as a business owner, as a colleague to inspire the lives of women I touch. As a Mental Health professional, it is an absolute honor to be an instrument in assisting women to transform their lives. Success is the fire that drives my passion to purposefully seek the opportunity in inspiring lives, personally and professionally. I am “Empowered to Make a Difference.”

“Create something new!” Let’s turn this into a time of opportunity! I am passionate about helping others become more visible. So many individuals are doing wonderful things in the community and around the nation, but no one knows about it. Many people have chosen to take a break. They are waiting for things to return to “normal”. Why not make this your time? Why not increase your brand awareness. We don’t have to be conquered or defeated by these uncertain times. It’s time to create the business you have been dreaming of doing for many years. Write one of those books you have inside of you. Start your own blog. Don’t let this moment in time pass you by without creating something new. We have God-given talents that are sometimes stifled and wasted. Even business owners sometimes find it challenging to take time to develop another business idea. Now is the time! How am I using this time to my advantage? I am using this downtime to increase my visibility and help others increase theirs. My co-authors, in my new book collaboration, “Trailblazers Who Lead” have enjoyed this new exposure and visibility. They also will enjoy more exposure with our book signing at my new conference, Power Up Summit. Some of these authors will share the stage with national speakers. uilding a business is a dream for many of us. It’s ideal to be your own boss, to have freedom and endless creative control; the benefits are appealing. But it’s also a very challenging endeavor with plenty of obstacles to navigate. Though I haven’t always envisioned myself on this particular career path, I honestly can’t imagine my life any other way. I purchased The Paper Moon in March 2018. While the existing store was known for gifts and event invitations, I wanted to use my degree in graphic design and passion for art to expand the services available to our clients. In the last two years, The Paper Moon has changed locations and grown to include a retail storefront, curated event design

and branding services, customized invitations, stationery and favors. I’ve found one of the main components to building a successful business is being mindful of the company you keep. It’s so important to surround yourself with people who are well rounded and have good energy and talents that compliment your own. Owning a business means multi-tasking, putting in long hours and constant problem solving, so it’s also important to prioritize health, family time, breaks and self-care. This solid foundation enables me to have some much-needed flexibility. Whether it means having my 1-year-old daughter, Caroline, at the store with me or taking a kickboxing class with my dad, I know I have employees I can depend on to keep the store and our ongoing projects intact. For me, finding a solid team of employees, who I feel good around and who can inspire each other with their differing strengths has been such an important part of maintaining and growing my business. We work hard to build trust and exceed the expectations of all our clients, but we also make sure to refuel with coffee, laughter or eating lunch together. It’s important to keep challenging your team and yourself to grow and work smarter, not harder. If you love what you’re creating every day and who you’re creating it with, your business will be a place both you and your clients want to be. HOW I BUILT MY BUSINESS
iBi Marketing Solutions
Rachel Hester, owner of iBi Marketing Solutions
76
July-August 2020
When I started my marketing agency, iBi Marketing Solutions, in April of 2017, I was so excited about what I was doing that I never once doubted myself or had any negative thoughts. I devoted 100 percent of myself to the business. I had “my blinders on,” as my mother, Laurie Hartley, always told me. My husband, Matt Hester, was the one who suggested I start my own marketing business. I think he knew me better than I did. It’s funny how we gravitate to certain things in life subconsciously. I’ve never been afraid of doing something new. Actually, I enjoy it a lot. I believe being an entrepreneur runs deep to the core of who we are. When I started my first business, then my second (RH Health & Wellness in September 2017), I wouldn’t say I did them the “correct way.” I just did it the way I knew best. There is a lot of “figuring out” when it comes to starting a business. Looking back, there definitely are things I would improve and spend more time on than others, but that's what it’s all about — learning and adapting as you go. Based on my experience, starting a business has several steps. The first — not because it’s the most important, but it will make or break you — is discovering whether you have what it takes to become a business owner. “Entrepreneur” sounds sexy, but a lot more goes into it than I ever knew. I am a stronger woman, wife and mother because of what I’ve accomplished on my own. The most important traits for

an entrepreneur are passion and work ethic. Work ethic will help you grind out the long hours, and your passion will be the motivating factor to keep you focused. If you can talk about it all day long, it’s a passion, and I truly believe work ethic is an attitude; you either practice it, or you don’t. On Sept. 21, 2018, I delivered our daughter, Lexi Hester. I could have abandoned my entrepreneurial dreams then, but I didn’t. Two weeks after her birth, I was back at it. My competitiveness, passion and work ethic (and a lot of support from my husband) kept me going. I was now a stay-at-home, working mom. Having positive and supportive people around you can help you reconnect to your inner drive. I completely believe in having a support team to lean on and confide in. My favorite quote, shared by my father Jim Hartley, is, “You will become what you think about.” Keep thinking about who you want to become, and it will happen. Rachel Hester is owner of iBi Marketing Solutions, a full-service marketing agency located on the Gulf Coast, as well as RH Health & Wellness, which provides solutions for weight loss and other health-related goals. Today, I lead a team of remote workers who are experts in helping other business owners reclaim some of their valuable time.” Twenty years ago, Comcepts was born from my interest in emerging remote network and telecommunications technologies, coupled with my desire to be more present for my family. Comcepts, initially a medical transcription company, developed a reputation for efficiency and accuracy that quickly led to the development of additional services. At our clients’ request, we designed an answering service and full-service call center scalable to their needs. This evolution was a testament to the services we provide and my personal values. Not only could I grow the business, I could help others regain something I sought passionately: time. The importance of family has shaped Comcepts’ past, present, and future. My late husband and all four of our children have worked alongside me, bringing their talents and leaving their mark. Most recently, my daughter, Meg, joined our team as business manager. Together we launched a sister company, WorkWise. We value time — our clients’, our team members’, and our own— which has translated into a successful strategy. I envisioned a remote work environment with flexible hours, and today, I lead a team who are experts in helping other business owners reclaim some of their valuable time. “Giving you the luxurious experience you deserve before, during and after the transaction” Real estate is not just a hobby but rather a passion for me. Being able to guide someone through the home buying process and close on their home is very rewarding. When I first became a licensed real estate agent I knew that one day I wanted to own my own company. Five years later I opened CLM Realty Group. When thinking of a name I wanted the name to be meaningful to me and who means more to me than my children; Cameron, Laurynn and Maddisyn. Success — do you remember how old you were when you first heard the word? Felt pressure to attain it? Actually bothered to look up the definition? Success is a noun defined as attainment of an aim or goal, popularity or profit. Did anyone ever tell you about the path to success? I can’t say I recall ever being a part of the conversation. I know it was never an assignment presented in class. As we were thrown into adulthood, we began to chase the proverbial success — each goal more and more lofty. Examples are all around of us of what success is supposed to look like, and rarely do we attain what society has taught us to obtain. The verb attain means to achieve, accomplish or succeed in reaching a goal (usually through some effort). The verb obtain means to acquire or get possession of something. However, sometimes we actually reach the top shelf without the ladder. How exciting is that? Goals achieved make us happy. They bring a certain joy that is unmistakable to our psyche. It makes us never stop trying; it’s what keeps us going. The innate drive to bargain time for a wish list is the basic construct of business. Being a woman in business is its own special endeavor. We have to make it; failure is not an option. We must evolve and grow. Businesses become like family, and we are charged with ensuring their success. Their success is a reflection of us and our dedication. The greatest achievement is when our baby grows into an adult or we have the chance to leave corporate America and the rat race to focus solely on the science experiment that is entrepreneurship. We figure out what is important in life, who we are and what our strengths are. We get to live on our terms. Every setback becomes an opportunity to learn something about ourselves and bring something new into the world. We get to follow our bliss. Successful businesswomen are poster children for the difficulty of having faith, no matter how much we are told seeing is believing. We keep going. We go until we see what we have been believing. We speak to our mountains, and we weather the storms. We grin and bear it. We continue to show up. We face each day, monitor every dollar and never miss a practice, birthday or girls’ night out. We are the keepers of the economy. Congratulations to us!

Pivoting in a pandemic Tresse Sumrall feeds, heals people through COVID-19 crisis BY JENNIFER GENTILE
As a nurse, Tresse Sumrall’s most formative experience was working in a level-one trauma emergency department at the University of Alabama at Birmingham Hospital. She started there less than a year out of nursing school and found herself dealing with the “sickest-of-the-sick” patients. “Gunshot wounds, stabbings, high-speed car and motorcycle accidents and burns were all in a normal day’s work,” Sumrall says. “I saw a lot of things I will never forget and learned a tremendous amount about emergency nursing during my time there.” Those skills and knowledge have served the wife, mother, health care professional and restaurateur well through the challenges of the COVID-19 pandemic. Like many women, Sumrall was forced to switch gears quickly in response to the crisis. On the Coast, several female entrepreneurs and leaders demonstrated resilience and out-of-the-box thinking to meet the community’s needs. Alexis Williams, founder of Aloha Glamour boutique, started selling reversible, reusable masks. Leslie Henderson, co-owner of Lazy Magnolia, started brewing up hand sanitizer instead of flavored seltzers.

For Sumrall, a registered trauma nurse in Gulfport Memorial Hospital’s emergency department, the pandemic required a new routine. She and her husband, Austin, had to arrange care for their 5-year-old son, Ollie, during her three-day work stretches, which usually involved her parents. Coming home, she’d strip down in the garage, take her scrubs straight to the washing machine and jump in the shower. When she and Austin started offering takeout at their Biloxi restaurant, White Pillars, she would help with that on the weekends while also managing Ollie and his schoolwork. “I’ve tried through all of this to keep myself as safe as possible while at work and take proper precautions to ‘decontaminate’ myself responsibly once at home so I don’t have to worry so much about my family — restaurant family included,” she says. White Pillars has since reopened for dine-in, and Sumrall has maintained her decontamination ritual. She’s still spending considerably less time at the restaurant on her off days because Ollie is still out of school. “He is set to start summer camp …, and I’m hoping we can start getting back to normal,” she says. As a nurse fighting on the front lines against a deadly virus, Sumrall says what stands out most are all the unknowns. “You’re in a constant state of overthinking symptoms and being super cautious just in case they may have it — even if, by their symptoms, you know they probably don’t,” she says. “It’s pretty anxiety producing, honestly. “You don’t want to be cavalier about something and end up exposing yourself or your coworkers, and on the other side of the coin, you are trying to be a good steward of your PPE (personal protective equipment) and not use it when it’s unnecessary.” In Sumrall’s other role as co-owner of a small business, she and her husband faced the challenge of keeping the doors open and employees paid while navigating ever-changing circumstances and protocols. In what should have been the start of their “busy season,” they found themselves having to adapt and innovate. They’re far from alone in a business that sustained huge revenue drops when margins were already slim.
“Not only can we walk into the bank and know everyone’s name, they all know my name. Like everything else Hancock Whitney is also community.” Kait S. At Hancock Whitney, we help our clients achieve their dreams by providing financial solutions delivered with expertise and warm 5-star service. Each day, we reaffirm our mission to help people achieve their financial goals and dreams. We work hard to create opportunities for people and the communities we serve—our purpose for doing what we do.
“Now that we have been allowed to reopen our dining rooms, we have pivoted to ensure we are following all the rules,” Sumrall says. “But maybe even more importantly, (we’re) displaying to our guests that we are taking this seriously and creating an environment where they feel safe and comfortable to dine in with their families.” Restrictions may have lifted, but Sumrall urges people to keep a healthy respect for COVID-19 and stay educated and aware. One good outcome of the illness, she says, is widespread education about good health practices like handwashing and staying home while sick. “I have no idea what the future holds any more than the next guy,” she acknowledges, “but I do think this has forced us to adapt, and we will be stronger and more prepared as a result.”

“The most successful event is the one that achieves your goals and exceeds your expectations.” In 2014, my dreams finally became a reality when I opened up my own event planning company, Tenesha & Company. I love the joy I see on my clients faces when they can walk into the event they are hosting and know that every single detail has been taken care of for them. I love that I get to do a variety of events from weddings, birthday parties for adults or children, retirement parties, bridal or baby showers, you name it they all excite me! My gift is serving people and understanding in times of event planning their stress level can be high, so I am thankful that they trust me to relieve the stress so they can enjoy their beautiful day. “Take my seat at the table.” Insecurity is a thief. It robs you of joy, peace, and purpose in life. About a year ago I embarked on a journey to walk in courage. I had to be ready to take my seat at the table when opportunity presented itself. I had to believe that through God I had everything that I needed already on the inside of me. Once I began to defeat my own self-limited thinking, I began to embrace courage. Hence, my blog, Uncommon Courage, was birthed. Uncommon Courage is a platform that encourages women to let go of self-doubt while leaning in toward the promptings of their hearts that is calling them to live lives of greater purpose, service, and success. “Embrace where you’ve been.” When I think about where I am today and the road it took to get here with its many twists and turns, it makes me proud to know that I never gave up. Life happened with unexpected bumps and detours along the way: divorce, a working single parent, and a child with some health issues, to name a few. Yet, I have always been goal-oriented. In any job I did, I networked, sought mentors, made connections and got involved in my community. I wasn’t always where I wanted to be in my career, but I made the best of it. I’m ecstatic to be in the role I am in today at Memorial Hospital. It’s the perfect fit for me, as I’m thrilled to be able to assist others in their career growth. These days, my personal and professional life have truly blossomed, and I love to help others’ do the same.

THE BASICS OF BREAST CANCER
what you should know T
he curves of femininity include full lips, rounded hips and, most notably, a woman’s breasts. Packed with milk ducts, breasts serve to feed a newborn, yet style BY DR. PHILIP L. tends to supersede function. LEVIN Cancer developing in this part of the body can be particularly devastating, as it can be so impactful to a woman’s self-image, but unfortunately, it’s not uncommon. On average, one in eight women will develop breast cancer in her lifetime. Three main types of tissue compose a breast. Lobules are glands that produce milk. The milk is then carried through ducts to the nipple. Finally, there is connective tissue that holds everything together. Most breast cancers begin in the ducts or lobules. Although constituting only about 1 percent of a woman’s body mass, the breast is the most common site for cancer to appear in a woman (excluding skin). In 2016, the incidence of new breast cancer diagnosed in Mississippi was 121 per 100,000. In comparison, the next two most common, lung and colo-rectal, clocked in at 58 and 40, meaning breast cancer was more common than the next three types of cancer combined. The key to treatment is early detection. Tumors found when less than a centimeter, about one-third of an inch, have a 7 percent mortality rate. If treatment isn’t started before the tumor reaches 3 inches, mortality is about 60 percent. Thus, it’s important for a woman to conduct self-examination frequently and keep regular appointments with her doctor. The most important sign of breast cancer is a lump in the breast. Other signs include a change in the size or shape of the breast, notably dimpling, an inverted nipple or skin changes such as redness or pitting. Not all lumps are cancer, in fact, most will be benign, such as cysts or scar tissue. If a lump is found, a doctor likely will order a mammogram and perhaps a needle biopsy. Once breast cancer has been found, treatment will depend on how far it has advanced. Small, self-contained lumps, so called cancer-in-situ, might be cured with simple surgical excision. Because breast cancer tends to spread through the lymphatic system, the surgeon may biopsy or remove some of the lymph nodes on the upper chest and into the armpit to have those checked

for cancer. Once the cancer has spread, two other modalities come into play; radiation and chemotherapy. Radiation might be localized to the chest to try to kill any stray cells missed with surgery, or it might be administered to other parts of the body where the cancer has metastasized. Chemotherapy involves taking poisons that kill multiplying cells, typical of cancers. In breast cancer, certain hormonal treatments have proven successful. Multiple risk factors affect the likelihood of a woman developing breast cancer. It strikes women older than 55 twice as often as those who are younger. A family history, particularly a first-degree relative like a mother, sister, or daughter having had breast cancer, doubles a woman’s risk. Certain genes have been linked with cancer. Having had cancer in one breast greatly increases the chances of developing it in the other. Other risk factors include having been exposed to large doses of radiation, which may apply to those treated for other cancers. Female hormones increase the risks, too, so women who are obese, take hormonal supplements, began having periods at a young age or continued having periods late into life all are at increased risk. Having a child at a younger age and having breast fed statistically reduces the risk, while never having had a child increases that risk. Alcohol consumption has also been found to increase the risk of breast cancer. Breast cancer is one of the slower-growing cancers, so although breast cancer is more common in women than lung cancer, more women die of the faster-growing lung cancer, and die sooner. The most important factor in mortality is the size of the tumor on diagnosis and whether it has spread. Improved screening tests and treatment options mean about eight out of 10 women with breast cancer will survive at least 10 years after initial diagnosis. To prevent the terrible consequences of breast cancer, all women should be diligent about selfexamination and having annual mammograms. Keep a healthy weight, avoid excessive alcohol and see your doctor for regular checkups. Dr. Philip L. Levin is an emergency medicine specialist in Gulfport. He can be contacted at (228) 867-4000.
RISK FACTORS FOR BREAST CANCER
• Age greater than 55 • First-degree family history (mother, sister, daughter) • Certain gene types • Prior breast cancer • Radiation exposure • Hormonal supplementation • Never having a child, or having the first one late in life • Early onset of periods and late onset of menopause • Obesity • High alcohol consumption

THE COMMON CAUSES OF
back pain
Nearly 90 percent of people will have at least one episode of back pain in their lifetime. Most of these episodes will resolve within six weeks, and far less than 1 percent will require surgery. As a spine surgeon, I try to educate people every day on the best methods for reducing back pain and minimizing long-term recurrence. Sometimes, this is as simple as home exercise, but on occasion, it may involve medications, interventional pain procedures and/or surgery. Below are the most common diagnoses associated with back pain and various treatment methods for them.
LUMBAR STRAIN
This is by far the most common diagnosis and often is characterized by diffuse tightness in the middle of the back that radiates outward. This is due to muscle spasm and inflammation. Utilizing intermittent ice or heat, overthe-counter anti-inflammatories and maintaining a normal activity level all can contribute to resolution. Contrary to popular belief, rest sometimes can make this problem worse. This is usually self-limiting but occasionally may require prescription medications and a course of formal physical therapy.
98
July-August 2020
DEGENERATIVE DISC DISEASE Unfortunately, as we age, the intervertebral discs in our backs will begin to break down. This is a normal process of aging. Sometimes, however, this can lead to central back pain that usually is made worse when bending forward. Maintaining an active lifestyle and good posture and core strength can greatly reduce longterm pain and dysfunction from this condition. In rare cases, this can lead to problems that may be addressed with surgery.
SACROILIAC JOINT DYSFUNCTION
This is caused by irritation or abnormal motion in the joint that connects the end of the spine to the pelvis. Usually this will be one sided, made worse with changing positions and possibly associated with pain down the back of the leg to the knee. It is more common in middle-aged women. This can be a challenging problem to treat, and I favor a multi-factorial approach involving medication, physical therapy and sometimes bracing and/or injections.
BY DR. CHRISTOPHER A. BURKS
LUMBAR DISC HERNIATION
This can occur at any age and be associated with back pain. When the disc pushes on the nerve roots in the spinal canal, this can lead to radiating leg pain. This may require pain injections and/or surgery if it persists despite conservative treatment. While back pain certainly can be debilitating, it often will improve on its own with over-the-counter medications and maintaining an active lifestyle. If your symptoms persist or are associated with fevers, chills, difficulty with bowel or bladder function or pain and weakness in your legs, you should seek the care of an orthopedist or your primary care physician, as it could be something more serious.

Lori Roney's
TRANSFORMATION STORY BEFORE MY TRANSFORMATION I recently had relocated to the Gulf Coast area and was hired for a new position as an office administrator. I was excited about the new job but just really had lost my selfconfidence. I was not comfortable with the weight that I had gained, especially around my midsection. I was wearing clothes to hide my ‘belly.’ WHAT I DID I had heard belly fat was related to menopause, stress and other contributing factors. I discovered a weight loss and wellness program, which integrates lifestyle coaching along with a dieticianapproved eating plan. I signed up for the program, and now after only two months, I have lost 22 pounds and feel better than I have in years. HOW IT WORKED The coaching and structure of the program guides you to success. I have a weekly check-in with my lifestyle coach to guide me on how to continue to customize an eating plan that works for my body and guides me to maintaining weight loss for a lifetime. HOW I FEEL ABOUT MYSELF TODAY I am so excited to have lost 22 pounds and decreased my pants size, but the best part is regaining my self-confidence. I feel better and have more energy to enjoy time with my family and my sweet 9-month-old granddaughter. MY ADVICE TO OTHERS
My advice to others who have struggled with low self-esteem and weight they couldn’t seem to lose, or just generally don’t feel as well as they have in the past, is to take action. The program I chose is not a diet; it’s a journey to a healthy lifestyle. You can take back your health.

SET GOALS TO
BY KAROL BRANDT
make the most of summer
Summertime is officially here along our beautiful Gulf Coast, and I am so excited! Can you feel it? Can you breathe it in? Do you see the beaches bustling, days getting longer and the all the stores stocked up with beach umbrellas, boogie boards and pool toys? One of the best ways to ensure you have a great summer and stay on your healthy, active wellness journey is to set goals. I haven’t yet, so let’s do this together! Here are some fun goals to make the most of the season:
READ A CLASSIC
Summer is for reading juicy novels while lying on a beach towel. Try to squeeze at least one classic into your summer reading list, and a good self-
SWIM IN A NATURAL BODY OF WATER
This summer, make sure to swim in a natural body of water, whether it’s the ocean, a lake or a river. Not only is swimming great exercise, but contact with natural water stimulates the immune system. In addition, some people compare floating in a lake or in the ocean when the water is calm to a meditative experience. Go make a splash!
MEDITATE OUTDOORS
One of the great things about summer is you can take your meditation routine outside. Try walking meditation; go out for a walk, feet in the sand or in the grass, and cultivate mindfulness by focusing all your awareness on walking. Imagine you’re kissing the earth with your feet with each step. You can also try yoga at the beach or paddleboard yoga.
PLANT SOMETHING
TRY A NEW HOBBY
Many hobbies are perfect for the summer months. One of these is photography. A great way to improve your photography skills is by tackling a project, such as taking a photo of something that represents the season every day throughout the summer. Here are some ideas: • beach bonfire • birds on the beach or in trees • summer plants and flowers • sunrise or sunsets • family time on the Coast Another hobby you can try is therapy coloring, one of my beach-time favorites. All you need is a box of colored pencils and some fun adult coloring books, then head outside to sit under a tree or take it to the beach and color your heart out.

a water sport, such as paddleboarding, kayaking, sailing or kitesurfing, I am going to try kitesurfing this year along our beautiful coastline. It can be a land activity, too, like bike riding or beach yoga.
improvement book is the perfect read while on vacay.
ENJOY SIMPLE SUMMER PLEASURES
Make a long list of simple seasonal pleasures to appreciate this summer. Your list can include walking barefoot on the grass, filling vases with brightly colored flowers and placing them around the house, lounging in a hammock, trying a new ice cream flavor or watching the sunset.
TRY A NEW ACTIVITY
One of the great things about summer is getting to spend lots of time in nature and the great outdoors. Set a goal of trying a new sport or activity. It can be
Feel immediately reconnected to the earth by planting and growing something. Try these: Create a fairy garden — a miniature garden complete with tiny structures and small plants. Grow a vertical vegetable garden — you can create one using shelves, hanging baskets or trellises.
Remember to make time for wellness, staying active, eating healthy and achieving some of these goals to achieve your optimal state. See you on the beach! BE SMART ABOUT
BY DR. ASHLEY EMERSON
sunscreen
With summer in full swing, it is important to incorporate good sun safety practices into your daily routine so you and your family can enjoy warmweather outdoor activities without concern. The foundation of sun protection begins with sunscreen; here are some important points to consider when choosing the right type.
KNOW WHAT YOU NEED
For optimal protection, a sunscreen should provide broad-spectrum coverage, have an SPF of 30 or higher and be water resistant, all of which should be clearly marked on the label. Bottom line: If you don’t see it on your product, chances are it doesn’t meet these standards.
THERE IS A SUNSCREEN FOR EVERYONE
If you have experienced irritation or sensitivity to sunscreen in the past, consider switching to a “sensitive skin” version or to a “physical” sunscreen that uses zinc or titanium as the primary ingredient. New formulations go on clear, just like traditional “chemical” agents. Bottom line: Everyone can use some type of sunscreen.
106
July-August 2020
MAKE IT COUNT
The biggest mistake most people make is incorrect use of sunscreen. Sunscreen takes time to take effect, so it should be applied approximately 30 minutes before going outdoors. It takes approximately one ounce (about a shot-glass amount) to adequately cover the average adult. Sunscreen also wears off, so it should be reapplied at least every two hours, or sooner after swimming or sweating. Bottom line: If you’re applying sunscreen and still getting a tan (or, even worse, a sunburn), you aren’t doing it right. We know one in five Americans will develop skin cancer in his or her lifetime, and the damaging UV rays from the sun are by far the biggest risk factor. Since sun exposure causes cumulative damage over time, the younger this damaging process begins, the higher your risk. Bottom line: You can decrease your risk of skin cancer by implementing proper sunscreen practices into your daily routine now.

CARING DURING COVID Throughout the pandemic, Coastal Family Health Center has tested 1,153 people for COVID-19, with 39 positive cases, says CEO Angel Greer. Curbside testing has been offered at all locations, she adds, and a mobile unit has provided access to testing in outlying areas.
Coastal Family Health Center provides care for all BY JENNIFER GENTILE
Regardless of their economic or insurance status, patients can find help and hope through Coastal Family Health Center. “We provide care for everyone, from infants to the elderly, expectant mothers, students and those with unique challenges such as homelessness, substance use disorder and chronic diseases,” says CEO Angel Greer. “We care for anyone and everyone who walks through our door.” Coastal Family Health Center started in Biloxi over 40 years ago as a ministry of a faith-based community organization, Back Bay Mission. The Center was founded as a single outpatient site offering medical and dental services to Biloxi residents. Today, Coastal Family Health operates 25 locations across six counties, according to Greer — serving more than 36,000 people annually. Besides an administrative office, it has two pharmacies, 12 clinics, nine school-based sites and a mobile unit. “Coastal Family Health Center is one of the largest health centers in the state,” Greer points out, “leading the way in health information technology, improved clinical outcomes, evidence-based medicine and innovation.”
108
July-August 2020
While its target demographic is uninsured, under-insured and lowincome patients, Greer says Coastal Family Health is committed to serving the entire community. “Our governing board is comprised of local residents and community leaders, and 51 percent of our board members are patients,” according to the CEO. “We are patient-centered, patient-focused, and patient-led.” Coastal Family Health caters to those needing a range of care — including medical, dental, behavioral health, psychiatry and optometry, plus pharmacy, laboratory, radiology, ultrasound, mammography and WIC. Special programs are available for residents affected by circumstances like homelessness and HIV. Household size and income may qualify patients for discounts, and the center’s pharmacy offers name-brand and generic prescriptions at significantly reduced rates. The center also partners with over 30 local pharmacies to offer similar savings. Greer, who embarked on a nursing career in 1993, says the most fulfilling aspect of her work is improving health for patients, who realize they aren’t doomed to have a stroke or heart attack due to
their family history and can take control of conditions like diabetes and high blood pressure. “We are rewarded when we get to care for the third and fourth generation of families; we are rewarded when our team achieves goals that seem impossible,” she says. “We are rewarded to celebrate the retirement of our team members after serving the community for decades. The rewards are too numerous to tell it all.”

COLOR BY JASMINE BALL
T he power that you wear
Clothing is a huge part of how we express ourselves without saying a word. Through fashion and style, we can connect with others and evoke emotion. While we can connect with clothing pieces for many reasons, color is a huge part of why we buy many of the items we have in our closet and why we pick a garment off the clothing rack. Color sets the tone — showing who you want to be and how you want others to perceive you. Color allows us to be expressive, bold, and influential to others around us. It affects our mood and those of the people we interact with — even causing changes in heart rate, blood pressure and respiration. Just imagine if every item you chose lacked color; how would you feel wearing it? Would it truly express who you are? That is why color and its power are so important in fashion. Color tells a story. If I were to wear a shade of yellow, it would set a tone of happiness and cheerfulness. Colors like black and navy blue make you feel empowered, slim, and so confident you could tackle anything. Red is intense and represents passion, determination and

energy. I encourage you to try something new. Maybe you’re not a fan of wearing color, but I promise that after you add some new hues to your wardrobe, you’ll notice a shift in your attitude and your confidence. The best part is others will start to notice, too. As designer Coco Chanel once said, “The best color in the whole world is the one that looks good on you.” Now that we’re pressing our way into summer, I hope to see people trying colors that are out of their comfort zone. Summer is about being bold and courageous! This season, you’re sure to spot reds, saffron, cobalt blues, minty greens, coral pinks, and plum purples. I hope you come to embrace color as the power that you wear. Jasmine Ball is a Mississippi fashion, beauty and lifestyle blogger. PAV & BROOME A jeweler for every generation
BY JENNIFER GENTILE
For many Coast families, shopping at Pav & Broome Fine Jewelry has become a tradition. Dr. John Kelly, city of Gulfport chief administrative officer, bought a strand of pearls for his wife for their wedding anniversary — and later one for his granddaughter upon her graduation. Tony Swigris, of Tony’s Brick Oven Pizzeria, has purchased special items from the business over 25 years — including a “past, present and future” ring for his spouse. “Our tag, ‘Where the Coast gets engaged,’ is appropriate because many of our customers’ first purchases are engagement and wedding rings, and they continue to celebrate life’s momentous occasions with Pav & Broome for generations to come,” says manager Gail Pav. “We had a longtime customer in (recently) with their child, who is shopping for an engagement ring and hisand-her wedding rings.” The Gulfport jeweler has built a reputation over 45-plus years of serving the local community. John Pav started as a watchmaker in downtown Gulfport, founding the business in 1973. After partnering with his brother-in-law, Melton Broome, he decided to expand and provide a full range of products and services.
112
July-August 2020
“From the time I was a little girl, I loved to play dress up and put on my mother’s jewelry,” says Pav — who is married to the founder’s son, Matt, and entered the Gail Pav, manager of business in 1985. “I Pav & Broome still get excited to see the new designs our master jewelers create in the store.” Pav & Broome was located on 14th Street in downtown Gulfport until 2002, when the business moved to a new 4,000 square-foot building on Highway 49 in downtown Gulfport. A $2 million expansion and remodel was unveiled in 2018. Besides growing its space, Pav & Broome has added several designer lines to its inventory over the years, including Forevermark, Mikimoto, Gabriel & Co., Simon G. and TAG Heuer. As an official Rolex jeweler, Pav & Broome has been chosen to sell, service and maintain the brand’s luxury timepieces — which Pav calls “an honor and achievement jewelers strive for, and very few receive.” Customers planning to wed can choose from a large selection of engagement and bridal options, and if they want something one of a kind, artisans will work with
them to craft a custom piece. The recent explosion of rose gold and contemporary, free-form designs, Pav says, is especially exciting. “You have to see them in person to realize the beauty of each,” she adds. “The younger generation is bringing back yellow gold with a vengeance.” Trends and tastes may change, but Pav & Broome’s relationship with its customers only seems to grow stronger. For more than five years, the business has won the Coast’s “Favorite Local Jeweler” title in the People’s Choice Awards. “Three generations of the Pav & Broome families are in the business,” Pav says. “Our customers are our friends and neighbors, and we have been here for them for generations and will continue (to be) for generations to come.”

Summer-proof your makeup
BY CRISSY COX
Summer is here, and whether we’re putting in long hours at work or soaking up some extra sun before school resumes, you need a melt-proof makeup routine that will help get you through these hot Mississippi days. A 24-HOUR FOUNDATION Esteé Lauder Double Wear Stay-in-Place foundation (from $43) or Revlon Colorstay makeup for oily/ combo skin ($13.99, ulta. com) Both of these foundations are longtime cult favorites, with thousands of five-star reviews across the web. Each boasts flawless, buildable coverage and a long-lasting matte finish. Both are oil free and promise up to 24 hours of wear. Double Wear has a wider shade range while Colorstay is fragrance free and contains SPF 15. If you’re anything like me and you break a sweat just by walking from your house to your car, you should give these a try.
THE BEST EYELINER EVER — AT LEAST, IN MY OPINION KVD Vegan Beauty Tattoo eyeliner (from $21) If I could only use one eyeliner for the rest of my life, it would be this one, and that’s saying a lot for a makeup junkie. This long-wearing eyeliner is everything I need it to be — super black and smudge-resistant. It’s even cruelty free, which is always a bonus. This liner is also great for those of you with hooded or oily eyelids. Once it dries completely, you don’t have any pesky transferring onto your upper lid.

BULLETPROOF BROWS Anastasia Beverly Hills Dipbrow pomade (from $21) There’s nothing more frustrating than perfecting your brows, sweating a little (or a lot) and then having one smudge. Powders and pencils definitely have their place in this world, but if you’re looking for something waterproof and perfectly ideal for Mississippi’s humid climate, look no further. Using an angled brush and a very light hand, you can get perfectly sculpted brows in minutes. I have been working on the same jar of pomade for longer than I’d like to admit, so it just goes to show that a little goes a long way.
SET IT AND FORGET IT Skindinavia bridal setting spray ($20.65) This setting spray has been a staple in my makeup kit for years. Perfect for brides (or nurses or students or restaurant workers) with long, 10-to-12-hour days ahead of you, this finishing spray claims to be sweatproof, cry-proof, and kiss-proof. Give yourself a few generous sprays at the end of your makeup routine to seal it all in, and your makeup will stay looking fresher for longer while resisting fading and transferring. At Brushes, creativity reigns BY JENNIFER GENTILE
W
hen clients come to Brushes, says salon owner Erin Glisson, she wants the experience to be the highlight of their day. “We embrace every client and give our best,” Glisson says, “whether it’s a simple trim or a wild makeover.” For her team, Glisson adds, “Our work is more than just a beauty service. It’s an expression of our own creativity.” That made a forced shutdown due to the coronavirus all the more difficult for the Brushes crew, which is based on Creosote Road in Gulfport. While the doors were closed, the owner says, the effect was felt not only financially, but mentally by a team that deeply values their relationships with clients. Now that the salon has reopened, she says the staff is taking all necessary precautions and prioritizing safety. No matter the circumstances, Glisson adds, guests can count on Brushes being a clean, professional and creative space with a relaxing atmosphere. “Our crew truly supports each other’s work and growth; we get along really well and are always there for each other,” Glisson says. “This has allowed us to create such an incredible vibe in the salon that clients can feel immediately when they come in.” Besides cutting, coloring and styling hair, Brushes offers nail, massage, and spray-tan services. The salon has been steadily growing its roster of talented professionals, Glisson says, and continues to do so with aesthetics. “The addition of these skincare services will make us a one-stop shop for health and beauty,” the owner adds.
120
July-August 2020
Being a colorist and updo artist indulges Glisson’s creative bent, allowing her to experiment with mixtures and designs. She has long been intrigued by math and chemistry, and she’s wanted to own her own salon since she was a little girl. “I was also born with a cleft lip and was teased a lot growing up,” the south Florida native recalls. “I promised myself that I would make it my life’s work to make people feel beautiful inside and out.” Brushes now has been operating for two years, serving men, women and children and doing large events like Mardi Gras balls and weddings. Glisson decided after a long stint of booth renting that it was time to branch out, and the salon started with half of its current space and stylists. The most rewarding part of Brushes has been watching the growth in people, Glisson says, and while the team didn’t all start on the Coast, it’s where they all call home. “I take my role as a leader very seriously and do everything possible to ensure our stylists are able to succeed, she says. “I believe that people are a product of their environment, and watching Brushes stylists grow in their abilities and careers has been amazing.”

Owning the room
Wear color to make a statement First of all, how are you? Sheltering in place has been an experience for everyone. I miss my stylist. Lord knows I need hair color, a manicure and pedicure. Those are the little things we have taken for granted. Even celebrities have been criticized BY BRENDA for letting their roots show. Women on Zoom BLOUNT calls have been criticized for not wearing makeup. We could go on and on. The bad news is it may take a little longer before we achieve normalcy — but we will get back. Being a super-extrovert myself, sheltering in place has been a particularly different time for me. Wow — what an adjustment! When I look back at my calendar before shelter-in-place, I say to myself, “Girl you should be tired!” So, I am using this time specifically to reconnect with the people I love and with friends I’ve been too busy to call. This is time well-spent. Now that many of us are returning to a more public life, let’s talk about owning the room. It’s about being comfortable with who you are as you enter the room in the first place. Here are a few tips to get you there:
HOURS: Monday - Friday 10 - 6 | Saturday 10 - 3
• I love color, and you should too. Audiences respond to color. Find your signature color and wear it. I’m not saying give up on black, but think about it. Look around. Everyone wears black. If you do wear it, add some color with bold accessories. According to color psychology research, the best colors are cool blues, purple, and natural hues. You can start small, using a red or hot-pink tank, blouse or button-down under your black suit. You can own a room with the passion and confidence you exude and, of course, the right outfit. Remember — when you look good, you feel good. Great books for kids BY JENNIFER GENTILE
Run out of reading material for your little ones during lockdown? Here are some popular selections to add to your library:
“I’VE LOVED YOU SINCE FOREVER” “Today” Show anchor Hoda Kotb created this book in tribute to her adopted daughter, Haley Joy, and as a testament to the unbreakable bond between parent and child. Little ones will love the renderings of rabbits, owls and other animals beautifully illustrated by Suzie Mason. “THE GIVING TREE” Now 50 years old, this Shel Silverstein classic about the relationship between a boy and an apple tree is perhaps more poignant and relevant than ever. The story teaches fundamental lessons about gratitude, give and take and unconditional love.

“HOW TO CATCH A MERMAID” Part of the bestselling “How to Catch” series by Adam Wallace, “How to Catch a Mermaid” is about a little girl who yearns to meet and befriend a mermaid — and the schemes she hatches to make her wish come true. If this tale doesn’t interest your child, Wallace’s other stories featuring a dinosaur, dragon, monster and unicorn may do the trick.
“DRAGONS LOVE TACOS” Want to attract dragons to your next gathering? Serve tacos — all kinds, all sizes and plenty of them. But if the dragons happen to eat spicy salsa, watch out! Kids are sure to find this silly story by Adam Rubin delicious — and there’s even a sequel.
“JUDY MOODY WAS IN A MOOD” She has loads of spirit and sass, but as third grade begins, Judy Moody is feeling out of sorts. The aspiring doctor dreads the end of summer and struggles with changes at school — but the perfect project lets her express herself. If your young reader likes this story, there’s plenty more where that came from. Megan McDonald has penned 13 books about Judy Moody, and there’s also a series about her brother, Stink. “THE BALLAD OF SONGBIRDS AND SNAKES” (YOUNG ADULT) A highly anticipated new offering from “Hunger Games” author Suzanne Collins, this prequel takes readers back to Panem over 60 years before the exploits of Katniss Everdeen. The story chronicles an early revolt known as “the Dark Days” and follows an unexpected main character: Panem’s villainous president Coriolanus Snow as a young man.

The great board game
comeback BY JENNIFER GENTILE
Suddenly, most of us found ourselves confined at home with lots of free time on our hands — and after a while, even a Netflix binge loses its appeal. So how do you entertain yourself indoors during a lockdown order? Families are re-discovering the joy of some friendly competition mixed with nostalgia. Board games are officially back — but they never really left. In fact, board games were holding their own well before the pandemic. A study by Euromonitor International found that board games and puzzles grew in revenue from $9.3 billion in 2013 to $9.6 billion by 2016. Their popularity was only expected to increase, yielding a 1 percent sales growth rate year-overyear. This is a good thing for lots of reasons. Board games promote human interaction. They teach strategy, goal setting and patience. They lower stress. They encourage teamwork and cooperation. They provide fodder for great memories. They can help develop academic skills like language and math. In an age of technology overload, we crave activities that don’t
128
July-August 2020
involve a computer, smartphone or TV screen. Not sure what to play? There’s nothing like a classic. Take inspiration from some of the most popular board games of all time:
MONOPOLY
Admit it, you get giddy when your loved ones land on your property and have to pay you — even better if you’ve just built a hotel. Monopoly dates back to 1903 and is arguably the most iconic American board game of all time.
RISK
What other game allows you to conquer entire continents? While you’re defending and acquiring territory, you’re also getting an education in geography, world history and more.
CLUE
It’s time to release your inner Sherlock Holmes. Was it Col. Mustard in the library with a candlestick, or Mrs. Peacock in the conservatory with a dagger? Prove yourself the best detective by solving the murder.
THE GAME OF LIFE
Will you wind up a married millionaire or single in a shack? Luck and decision-making determine your fate in this game — not unlike life itself.
CANDY LAND
Beloved by children for generations, Candy Land is the ultimate escape for little ones and adults alike. Follow the rainbow path to sweet destinations like Licorice Lagoon and Lollypop Woods. Players race to find King Kandy, the lost king of Candy Land. Beyond these time-honored choices, the options are infinite. Fans of Scrabble and Dominoes probably will like Quirkle, in which players organize wooden tiles into rows and columns based on color and shape. Ticket to Ride lets you connect cities across America by claiming railway routes on the map board. Cranium and Trivial Pursuit put talents and knowledge to use. Whatever your family’s interests and abilities, there’s sure to be a game you’ll enjoy. Before you play, be sure to check ratings and age recommendations.

Let the waters renew you A PERSPEC TIVE ON LIFE FROM
BY MARIAH JOHNSON Gulf Coast Moms Blog contributor
As mothers, our planners tell us GCW AFFILIATE there is no time to stop and smell the roses, so sometimes life must gently remind us of the beauty in our midst when we feel overwhelmed. LIFE LESSONS AND THE SEA
In my case, life’s lessons came via the sea. Anyone who knows me knows I must live near the water. Yet, I drive down by the beach and have never stopped and appreciated the beauty of the Mississippi Gulf Coast. I have never answered my inner calling to pull over and drag my feet through the sand while staring out at the endless waters. My to-do lists and alarms and tasks have kept me too preoccupied to answer the call of nature and enjoy a sunset on the beach. It took me traveling 1,238 miles to sit by the seaside on the beach of a tiny island while nursing my youngest son to truly appreciate the beauty of
132
July-August 2020
motherhood. Usually with feedings, I’m checking my email, scrolling social media and mentally urging my son to hurry up. Yet on this day, it was different. I sat on the sand peacefully as the waves came and lapped my feet — in no hurry to end his feeding. I enjoyed the beauty of nurturing my youngest while watching my eldest splash around in the waves. It was like an epiphany that led me to realize that I had been tackling motherhood completely wrong these last few months. Today’s version of life will constantly give us too many tasks and roles to play, but even the most put together and organized moms have to stop, breathe, refresh ourselves and then carry on.
NATURE NEVER HURRIES, SO WHY SHOULD WE?
We juggle school projects, soccer practice, another work meeting, school conferences, birthday parties, the hubby’s to-do’s and so much more that we sometimes may not appreciate the beauty of our children and the role we play in their development. As moms, we forget about ourselves sometimes and
we are always hurrying. You, too, may need to find the time to slow down and interact with the life around you. Find your calling in nature. Use this time to find clarity with what is not working in your life. In my case, I never realized how agitated my soul was until I sat on this little beach many miles from home. I recognized how many of my issues were insignificant and that my main priorities were skewed. While still young at life but slightly experienced in motherhood, I finally have started to understand the beauty of it. As I travel down this path again, I have realized from time to time I may need to stop and be renewed by the life around me during this journey. Sometimes we need to wander away from the hustle and bustle of our lives and recharge — to get some sun on your head, so to speak, be it under the shade of the magnolia trees, snoozing on a beach, trekking through the forest or setting up a retreat in the backyard. As mothers, we are the soothers of other’s souls, but what about our own? Our children will grow so beautifully when they have a mother who understands she has to nurture her soul, and then theirs.

I have to say it — so many children’s toys are so bright and colorful that it can ruin a playroom vibe. Of course, many people love bright colors, so that works for them. For those of us who prefer a neutral playroom, I want to share some inspiration. So many toy-storage options are available. Having three children, I know we parents want to give them access to certain toys without help, which hopefully means our name will be called fewer times each day. So, where do we start?! FIRST Organize your toys in storage bins by type. Remember that small, sticky hands will be touching these baskets constantly, so stay away from materials you can’t wipe down. Also don’t forget to measure before you commit to the storage bin. I chose bins you can’t see into because it makes my OCD tendencies feel calmer.
inspiration SECOND Put the toys they’re allowed to play with on their own on the bottom shelves. THIRD Add some cute labels. This also is a great way for them to work on sounds and letter recognition. FOURTH We are huge advocates for reading, so we always have books around and like to keep them at their level. I always suggest keeping books in the playroom. Side note for us neutral nursery mamas: The sides of books are actually really pretty — and generally still neutral. FIFTH Sit back and enjoy a calming playroom for endless hours of creativity and imagination to begin.

FROM HUNTINGTON LEARNING CENTER
HOW TO DEAL WITH DIFFERENT TYPES OF
learning problems
For some students, school doesn’t come easy. Some struggle with broad learning difficulties while others lack important skills, making it challenging for them to achieve grade-level expectations and get good grades. Here are a few common types of learning troubles and ways to address them at home:
ATTENTION DEFICIT HYPERACTIVITY DISORDER (ADHD) There are different types of ADHD, and children can exhibit some or all of the typical symptoms, including difficulty learning, struggles with focus, hyperactivity and impulsivity. Having ADHD can make it difficult for children to complete tasks, stay organized with time and homework, keep themselves on track while working and pay attention.
A few things parents can do to help: • Use a timer to help children stay aware of time and manage it better. • Stick to a routine so children know what to expect in the mornings and evenings. • Communicate regularly with the teacher about strategies that work in the classroom that parents can mimic at home. • Implement a reward system to keep children working toward continuous improvement.
DISORGANIZATION
At a young age, being disorganized might seem like a small thing, but this can become very problematic when children reach junior high school. Disorganized students lose important things regularly, including homework and papers intended to come home to parents. They spin their wheels at homework time because they’re busy trying to find things they have misplaced, and they do not write down homework assignments in their planners.
136
July-August 2020
A few ways parents can help: • Set goals and expectations and hold children to them. • Insist on daily use of a planner to record homework assignments and check off nightly tasks. • Get children into a nightly routine of cleaning out binders and getting their backpacks ready for school the next day.
READING PROBLEMS
Reading problems can range from missing basic skills to learning disorders like dyslexia. Because school gets progressively more challenging every year, it is essential that parents address reading issues, even if they seem minor. While it is important to have an expert assess children who may be suffering from more than just typical reading challenges, here are a few things parents can do to help: • Read nightly with children and pay attention to what causes them the most difficulty learning. • Reach out to teachers to get their observations on what might be happening in the classroom. • Get individualized tutoring help. The above is certainly not a comprehensive list of the types of learning troubles your child might have, and keep in mind that every child is different. The point is this: struggles are unique for each student. No single solution works for everyone. No matter what your child is dealing with, it can be overcome.

FOUR STEPS TO CREATING
a tidy, joyful workspace Want to reduce stress, increase productivity and set yourself up for more joy and success in your career and personal life? Tidying your work environment will do just that. Here’s how to do it: COMMIT, CARVE OUT TIME, AVOID DISTRACTIONS
To achieve permanent results, finish tidying as rapidly as possible. Decide what support you need to make this happen and arrange for an initial, uninterrupted block of three to five hours to totally focus. Quickly schedule additional sessions if needed. You busy, work-fromhome moms definitely will want some backup childcare.
FOCUS ON JOY
For each item in your work environment, choose what to keep by asking: • Does it bring me personal joy? (e.g., your favorite pen) • Does it bring me functional joy? (e.g., a stapler that really works) • Will it bring me future joy? (e.g., tax-deductible expense receipts)
TIDY BY CATEGORY
Following this order can be helpful: clothing (if uniforms or accessories are involved), books, papers, miscellaneous items and lastly, sentimental items. While everyone’s workspace is
unique, miscellaneous items typically are subcategorized into office supplies (pens, scissors, tape, etc.), electrical items (like cords and digital devices), job-specific items (product samples, art supplies and such), personal-care products (cosmetics, medicines, etc.) and food (snacks). Gather everything in a BY HEATHER YOUNG given category or subcategory, ask the three joy questions above, keep what serves and delights and proceed to the next category.
CREATE EFFICIENT STORAGE
Combat future clutter by deciding on a storage place for every single item you keep. Whenever possible, store items of the same category together in one place and use boxes of various sizes within desk drawers to organize office supplies, electrical cords, personal care products and snacks. Papers can be filed traditionally in drawers or stored vertically on shelves in labeled magazine holders. My favorite tip: Aim to completely clear your desk surface, then add inspiration with a favorite photo or vase of fresh flowers. Cheers to your success!

Business insurance
Consider the worst-case scenario Starting your business gives you plenty to do and think about. You must develop a legal corporate structure, set up your tax ID, register with the state, determine a location, hire staff, set up your accounting system and buy BY ANGELYN insurance. TREUTEL ZERINGUE Each industry is different, but the best way to start is to understand the specific risk exposures you may encounter. Consider the worst-case scenario, then decide how to address each situation. If the risk is too great for you to handle alone, you should look into insurance coverage for your protection.
COVERAGES YOU SHOULD CONSIDER FOR YOUR OPERATIONS:
• Commercial auto: protects a company’s vehicles and vehicles that carry employees, products or equipment. • Property insurance: covers building and business personal property, including office equipment, computers, inventory or tools for protection from fire, vandalism, theft, smoke damage, etc. • Liability insurance: provides both defense and damages if you, your employees or your products or services cause — or are alleged to have caused — bodily injury or property damage to a third party. • Cyber liability insurance: protects from emerging risks related to technology; provides coverage in the event of data loss of sensitive or non-public information and all of the compliance requirements and legal action necessary following a breach. • Business interruption coverage: provides for payment if your business can’t operate due to a covered loss.
COVERAGES FOR PROTECTING YOUR STAFF:
• Workers’ compensation: provides wage replacement and medical benefits payments to employees who are injured on the job. • Group health insurance: Plans can cover hospital visits, doctor visits, surgeries, prescriptions and possibly vision and dental. • Disability Insurance: provides compensation for employees unable to work in the event your employee is injured or has a lengthy illness. • Group life insurance: provides for the families of employees and also can be used as a method of perpetuating your business.

GIVE THE GIFT OF
life insurance We make saving easy. Financial planning without life insurance is like rearranging the deck chairs on the Titanic.
Meet our team!
BY KATHY ROGERS
For life insurance to make a difference in your financial plan, you must buy it and keep it. One of the first things you should do is go to lifehappens.org and click on the “calculators” tab. This tab has options to help you determine how much life or disability insurance you need, as well as an option called “human life value calculator.” This calculator helps you assess the financial loss your family would incur if you were to die today. I recommend you review all three options, then click over to the “videos” tab to see and hear real-life stories of how people’s lives were impacted by the gift of life insurance or the lack thereof. Once you have taken the time to determine how much life insurance you need, I recommend you contact a local life insurance professional. I say local because life insurance is not a once-and-done purchase. Life doesn’t stay static. Things change, and insurance should be reviewed annually. Life insurance needs change for many reasons, including when you marry, have children, buy a house, open your own business or take on debt. Reviewing life changes and the needs generated by those changes is much easier when you review them with a person you know, like and trust instead of with someone you’ve never met on the other end of a 1-800 number. If you think life insurance costs too much, have you considered the cost to your loved ones of not having life insurance? Have you ever taken the time to sit and think about how different life would be financially for your family if you died? Life insurance is a gift. For children and younger people, it guarantees insurability — meaning buy it now while their health is good, and if the unforeseen happens and their health prevents them from purchasing coverage later, their family will be covered by the purchase their parents or grandparents make today. “IF”
What
The unexpected happens… You have a stroke or dementia… Your child has special needs… You have the death of a loved one… You have an unexpected injury…
For families, life insurance can mean grief is not compounded by financial worries like how to pay for a funeral, keep a roof over their heads, pay day-to-day bills or send their children to college. Life insurance for business partners can provide the funds to buy out a partner’s spouse and keep the business going while they find a replacement.
HERE ARE A FEW OTHER GREAT THINGS ABOUT LIFE INSURANCE:
Some companies offer what we call living benefits. Living benefits means a portion of the death benefit can be accessed to cover chronic, critical or terminal illness while you are still living, subject to policy requirements. These additional funds can make it possible for you to stay at home. Term life insurance is a great way to obtain coverage to fill a temporary need at a fraction of the cost of permanent coverage. Within certain time limits, term life polices often can be converted to permanent polices, and this guarantees insurability. When properly designed, indexed universal life insurance can be used to help build tax-free income at retirement. The Secure Act, effective as of Jan. 1, 2020, made multiple changes in the taxation of assets transferred to heirs. Life insurance is a tool to help transfer these assets, with the potential for significant reduction of the taxes. In most cases, life insurance proceeds are not taxable to the beneficiary. As my husband, Lee, likes to tell people, don’t die for free.
