Bypassing GENETICS Stephanie Brown follows family members with life-changing weight loss surgery s an adolescent, Stephanie Brown admits she was an “emotional eater.” “[I] didn’t have a lot growing up, so food was my comfort for everything — whether I was sad [or] happy,” recalls the Walmart customer service manager. Consequently, at school and elsewhere, Brown endured cruel taunts and jokes about her size. Weight has been a struggle for most of Brown’s family, and three of her sisters —along with a brother, a brother-in-law, a sister-in-law and a niece — successfully addressed the issue with surgical weight loss procedures. Brown followed suit with a gastric bypass procedure on June 27, 2016, at Singing River Hospital, under the exceptional care of Dr. William Avara with South Mississippi Surgical Weight Loss Center. “The experience was wonderful,” Brown says. “Everyone at that office is the best; no one treats you any different. They have never looked down on me before I had surgery, and they take such
A
good care of you.” To date, Brown says she has lost 175 pounds, “and it has been wonderful.” Attaining a healthy weight was a goal she’s aspired to all her life, and now she is excited to step on the scale. Picking out clothes, once an unpleasant activity, no longer bothers Brown, who can shop at any store. “I don’t get embarrassed to go places and do things, get out and walk, mow the grass or go anywhere,” she says. “I wish I had been able to do it years and years ago.” Brown says she would recommend South Mississippi Surgical to anyone with a similar story. The center has performed more than 4,000 bariatric procedures since the year 2000 and has been awarded for patient safety and quality care. Beyond the surgery, doctors and staff build a relationship with patients, guiding them through lifestyle changes that will keep them healthy long term. “If anyone out there is overweight and wants to do this surgery, please go to a meeting and get started,” Brown says. “It will be the best life-changing experience you will ever have.”

A letter to a Future Home Buyer YOU HAV E A F R IE ND IN T H E R EA L ESTAT E BUS INESS .
Buying a home is different from buying a house. A home is where the heart is, and that means finding just the right place is important. This is not always so easy particularly if you are moving from a different city. Even if you are local, finding the right real estate company and agent that understands your needs and wants is crucial. But who can you trust? Not all agents and companies are equal. I found my special agent at Latter & Blum Shaw Properties. Today’s real estate market is extremely competitive, making the local knowledge and expertise of your agent that much more critical. Latter & Blum Shaw Properties has been in the business for over 40 years on the Gulf Coast. The company has a thorough knowledge of the area, and most of all it gave full backing to our agent in finding and closing on our home. I can truly say that with Latter & Blum Shaw Properties, you have a real friend in the real estate business. -John Cuevas

Special indeed Organization opens ‘beautiful game’ to special players Photography by John Fitzhugh 14
March-April 2019
Just as Patti and Kenny Wilson were looking for activities for their disabled children, Allen Pilcher was putting together the Mississippi Coast Special Needs Soccer Association.
The timing was perfect.
Pilcher, who used to coach his son in recreational soccer, realized there were few athletic outlets for disabled children and adults on the Coast. They were used to watching their siblings play but rarely got an opportunity to take the field themselves. For 12 years, Pilcher, with the help
of the Wilsons and a host of other volunteers, has provided an athletic and social activity for children who might not have one otherwise. Pilcher is a certified coaching instructor for US Youth Soccer’s TOPSoccer program. Their Outreach Program for Soccer was created by the national

organization to give children with physical and mental disabilities access to the sport. They spend eight months securing sponsors and recruiting volunteers and players for the 10-week season that runs from October through December. The league is open to children from the six southernmost counties age 3 and older. Players are divided based on their ability. Volunteer coaches, some

of whom are special education teachers and therapists, give the players lots of attention. Patti Wilson said she used to pay a physical therapist to help her children kick a ball. Now they are out playing the beautiful game. To learn more about the South Mississippi Special Needs Soccer Association, visit https://www. facebook.com/MCSNSA.ORG.

Hitting her target
Rhonda Waits always aims to succeed By Jennifer Gentile Archery may not be the quintessential “girl” activity, but for Rhonda Waits, it’s a passion. “Like any other hobby or pastime you engage in, it’s about finding that ‘something’ that fulfills you and drives the inner self to growth (and ultimately success),” says Waits, a married mother of two grown children. “Archery, to excel in it, requires you to be present in the moment.” Being focused and tenacious translates to other aspects of Waits’s life, namely her role as chief administrative officer at Tradition, a master-planned community in Harrison County. Previously, she’d worked in the legal profession for over 17 years, acting as a key organizer and first chairwoman of the Mississippi Bar Association Chapter of Paralegals and Legal Assistants in the early 90s. Along the way, several mentors imparted wisdom to Waits about leadership, confidence and success — which she has applied professionally and personally. At Tradition, besides working with senior management on land development in the master plan, she serves two homeowner associations (representing over 120 households) and on three architectural review committee boards. “I still come into the project some days looking around with wide, little-kid-in-a-candy-store eyes of amazement when I think about what one individual has accomplished with his vision to build a hometown,” Waits says, referring to Tradition founder Joe Canizaro. She marvels at the community’s mix of residential, commercial, educational and recreational features, putting everything residents need within a 15-minute walk of their front door. Meanwhile, Waits has been promoting and participating in archery at the local, state and national levels. In 2017, she was chosen as an inaugural ambassador for arcHER, an organization of professional women archers, and she has reprised that role for the 2018 and 2019 seasons. “It’s an honor and privilege to carry the arcHER banner to encourage, empower, educate and inspire arcHERs of all ages and competition levels,” Waits says. “This opens the opportunity to be involved with female and youth archers in particular.” Waits’s husband introduced her to archery early in their relationship, and they attended their first outdoor competition together. Waits has since gone on to win a slew of awards in the sport, most recently holding the title of 20
March-April 2019
2018 Archery Shooters Association Pro/ Am National Champion of the Women’s Hunter Elite amateur division. Whatever someone is trying to accomplish, Waits says, “success in any facet of life requires a lot of listening.” “Listen to God’s direction,” she advises. “Listen to yourself, listen to your peers and, of course, listen to your boss – even if that’s you.” While social media clichés usually elicit an eye roll from Waits, she sees truth in two particular hashtags: #joyinthejourney and #dowhatyouloveandlovewhatyoudo. Her understanding of joy is as an acronym – Jesus, Others, You. “If you approach your life and career perspective thinking on the attributes of Jesus first, others second and yourself last, you are setting up for success in every avenue of life,” she says. Women in general juggle numerous responsibilities at home and in the workplace, Waits says, which can leave them feeling overwrought. Rather than concentrating on the burdens of each role, she urges others to concentrate on the benefit it adds to their life. “Even when you can’t do what you love, have the perspective to love what you do,” she says. “You are fearfully and wonderfully made for His purpose, and remember — purpose fuels passion. Explore until you find yours.”

Their performance has been recognized nationally by the American Heart Association®, Blue Cross Blue Shield® and Carechex® for demonstrated excellence in cardiac care. No one knows that level of dedication better than Bill Speer, a retired United States Army Colonel and Vietnam War combat veteran. Having been injured in the war, Bill is no stranger to the value of expert emergency medical care.
Bill Speer
Quadruple Bypass Heart Surgery Patient & Retired United States Army Colonel Bill and his wife Pearl are “snowbirds” from Milford, Kansas and have made their home in Biloxi, Mississippi every September through April for the last several years. On December 2nd of last year, Bill suffered a heart attack and found himself in the care of Singing River Health System. Quadruple bypass surgery was scheduled with Dr. Johnson for the morning of December 7, 2018 – an infamous day he will always remember now in more ways than one. He credits the entire team for complete communication before, during and after surgery. “They were professional,” said Bill, “but compassionate. We were all treated first-class, including my wife.” “I left there completely informed, and the care team, from the nurses in ICU and recovery to the housekeeping staff – they were textbook on cleanliness and procedure. I was an Army hospital CEO when I retired. I have the credentials to know quality healthcare when I experience it firsthand.” Within three hours after surgery, he was on his feet and in four days was discharged. Today Bill continues to adhere to doctor’s orders, eating heart healthy foods and exercising more with his wife in the warm sunshine of the Mississippi Gulf Coast, the second home that will forever hold a very special place in his newly healed heart.

Fresh face of real estate
BRITTANY GEOTES doesn’t make deals — she builds relationships Becoming a Realtor, Brittany Geotes often tells people, only takes passing an exam. But becoming a respected, top-producing Realtor — that’s something else entirely. “It takes long nights, working weekends and a positive personality,” says the owner/Realtor with NextHome Simplicity, “but most of all, you have to really love people.” After graduating with honors from the University of Southern Mississippi in 2012, Geotes went back for a business/marketing degree — hoping to improve her odds of getting into a good master’s program for industrial organizational psychology. She changed direction — which she thought was temporary — after taking real estate classes with a friend. Although Geotes ultimately chose real estate, she says her psychology studies helped prepare her for the challenge of comforting, teaching and providing for a diverse real estate clientele. “I absolutely love helping people understand the real 32

estate process and helping them accomplish their goals,” Geotes says. “I also love how this career lets me develop long-term relationships with people from all over.” VISION BECOMING REALITY As a Realtor himself, Brittany’s husband, Andrew Geotes, understands the dedication needed to be successful in the industry. The husband-and-wife team are always on call — during dinner, on weekends and even on their honeymoon. The culmination of their hard work and sacrifices came in January, when they launched their NextHome Simplicity business. “We have been working from the moment we wake up to the moment we get into bed,” Brittany Geotes says. “We have a vision to build a brokerage of full-time, experienced professionals and provide them with tools and training to simplify the process and provide our clients with a consistently excellent real estate experience.”

HOME sponsored by The couple is operating out of a temporary location while their permanent office, on Klondyke Road in Long Beach, undergoes renovation. “(Brittany) has been instrumental in everything, from the design and layout of the office itself to the aesthetic — then we’re working together to put together policies and procedures for our agents,” her husband says. “She’s a workaholic who does great at everything she does.” OVERCOMING OBSTACLES Dyslexia was one of several challenges Geotes faced during her formative years, and she learned valuable coping skills from a young age. “I didn’t have the storybook childhood,” she acknowledges, adding that she moved out at age 16 and was engaged by 17. She survived an abusive relationship and put herself through college, she says, only to come out stronger. Clearing those hurdles helped her develop a fierce work ethic that has served her well, yielding opportunities by the age of 30 that she never thought possible. The Realtor also credits God for His guidance. “He has answered very specific prayers that have helped me accomplish many goals, Geotes says. “One of my favorite sayings is ‘get on your knees and pray, then get on your feet and work.’” EACH DAY IS DIFFERENT No day is the same for the busy Geotes, who sometimes shows properties from sunup to sundown. Other days are taken up with emails and talking to clients, or conducting research and counseling other agents. In the last few years alone, Geotes has witnessed a dramatic shift in the real estate industry, toward an ever greater emphasis on technology. Growing up in the information age, she can’t remember a time without computers and cell phones, and she was using social media as a marketing tool long before it’s potential was known. Fresh approaches are propelling Geotes and her young, ambitious female peers to the top of the local real estate pyramid. “I’ve created hundreds of social media marketing posts, and I regularly do short videos on my YouTube channel and other social media platforms,” Geotes says. “Nowadays, past clients are so happy to see how far I’ve come. The support they give me really warms my heart.” Emily Clemens, her former broker at REMAX Along the Way, is among those who are pleased — but not surprised — by Geotes’s accomplishments. Clemens says she been impressed by her “dear friend” since Geotes contacted her in 2014, looking for a broker to work under. “It’s been a blessing to watch her continue to grow and succeed as she recognizes and puts into action the gifts I saw in her from our first meeting,” Clemens adds. 34
March-April 2019
CHANGING WITH THE TIMES Like Geotes, Clemens has sought to keep pace with an ever-evolving business — “particularly technology, both what’s available to the consumer and the agent.” “While nothing replaces the personal connection with the public that’s vital to our industry, the ability to see the benefit of combining the two is proving to be an asset,” Clemens says. While agents generally have access to many of the same tools, Andrew Geotes says not all invest in them or use them to the same extent as he and Brittany. For instance, the couple recognizes the power of professional photography to show a home in the best light, and they also take advantage of Matterport — a 3-D platform that allows viewers to virtually walk through a property. “It’s like Google Earth inside your home,” he says. The technology also allows the Geotes to provide buyers with an accurate, printable floor plan, including room dimensions. According to the couple’s website, http://theorangedog.net/ seller/, marketing is now entering the “visual” phase, and nine out of 10 homebuyers are starting their search online. Video marketing is essential to reaching the largest audience, and Geotes strives to keep up with the trends. “Also, NextHome offers our buyers a personalized app for them to search for available properties,” she says. “Search engines like Zillow and Trulia do not always have up-to-date or accurate information, which is why buyers love using our app.” Geotes’s efforts to stay on the cutting edge have been rewarded with several top producer awards since she was just 25, including Platinum Top Producer recognition in 2017. In the same year, she and her husband were named the third top-producing team in the nation with $14 million in sales, beating teams of seven-plus agents in large states like Texas and California. Most recently, Geotes announced that she and Andrew will be headed to Las Vegas to accept their 2018 national NextHome award. In any client interaction, Geotes says her objective is not to close a deal, but to forge a relationship. Some want to enter real estate because they like houses, she says, “but it takes so much more than that.” “A good Realtor is someone who has knowledge and experience of the market they are working in, someone who cares about their clients’ needs and wants and someone who strives to be professional,” Geotes adds. In her husband’s eyes, Geotes’s enthusiasm and energy set her apart. He’s seen her lose sleep over situations where her clients’ interests were at risk, and no matter the size of the deal, she’s committed to caring for them like family. “She’s extremely passionate about what she does and helping people,” Andrew Geotes says. “That’s her whole mission — to provide service in the way she feels clients deserve.”

Diamond in the rough Couple transforms neglected Biloxi home
I was in the staffing industry for 24 years and always had dreamed of remodeling houses once I retired. This dream was fueled by my love of decorating and home improvement television series like Extreme Makeover: Home Edition, Trading Spaces and so on. In 2010, my place of employment was sold, and two years later, my position was eliminated — thus creating the perfect opportunity for me to fulfill my vision. I set out to rescue neglected houses — once dream homes that the owners, for whatever reason, couldn’t retain. My goal was to transform these houses and pre36

pare them for a new family, making them beautiful dream homes once again while strategically placing scripture passages and positive messages on the foundations. Before purchasing a property, I always pray for wisdom and make sure I get the green light before moving forward. I started acquiring more and more old properties that needed rescuing, remodeling them and continuing to live my dream over the next few years. In 2015, a Realtor friend called me and recommended I see this house in Biloxi that had been vacant for 13 years. He said the listing stated it needed foundation repairs at an

estimated cost of up to $25,000. I was not familiar with foundation issues or other problems it could cause. I probably should have said no. Pulling up to this house, I determined it was in a safe area and loved the neighborhood, which is one of my major deciding factors in purchasing a property. The exterior was beautiful, and I was eager to view the interior. As I entered, it was very evident that the foundation was very unstable. I called my contractor friend, who recommended I pass on this house. He said you never know what you will get into with a foundation problem, especially when you aren’t sure what caused this issue. I called my Realtor and told him this house was like a funhouse, those unstable houses at amusement parks. I also told him, and I quote, “No one in their right mind is ever going to buy this house.” I added that it should be condemned and torn down. One year passed, and I couldn’t get this house out of my mind. Even while I was sleeping, I would see it in my dreams. I decided to do a drive-by and 38

HOME sponsored by see if anyone had bought it. No one had. I called my Realtor and told him I wanted my husband to look at it — not as a possible flip project, but as a potential personal home. Remember as I mentioned earlier — I pray for wisdom before purchasing a property. I felt as though God was leading me to rescue this house, but I needed to confirm that it was God-led; my husband was in agreement. Fast forward to late 2016 — we purchased the house and began our journey of transforming this diamond in the rough. The project went from a home makeover to an extreme home makeover in a short time. Our excitement rapidly turned to doubt and had us questioning whether we’d missed God’s direction. The foundation was worse than we thought. It was sinking 12 inches on one end and required installation of 53 concrete pilings under the concrete slab. We initially were told that an oak tree and its root system were more than likely the culprit for the foundation issue. However, we found out later that this neighborhood has an aquifer that runs underground. We went through three contractors, and after thousands of dollars spent and months wasted, we were back at square one. The statement I had made to the Realtor, “No one is ever
going to buy this house,” rang loudly in my ears. Therefore, we decided the best action would be to demo and start over. While getting prices for that process, out of nowhere a contractor we previously had spoken with by phone contacted us. He said he had been to our house many times with other investors who had decided not to take this project on. He presented his plan, along with a lifetime warranty, to reassure us he would make it right. Once again, we chose to rescue this house and move forward. After this two-year-long, arduous journey, our house has been completely transformed from the ground up — starting with a solid foundation. This reminds me of the Bible story in Matthew 7, the parable of the two builders; one house is built on solid rock, and the other on sand. We all know how that story ended. I am so glad we didn’t say no. Our home certainly is not perfect, but it is perfectly imperfect, and we are so thankful we rescued this rough-cut diamond that we now call home.

Real Estate, has established a stellar reputation during her three decades in the industry. Starting as a Realtor in 1985, she stayed with Alfonso Realty 44

for 18 years, which became part of the Coldwell Banker franchise. She was a multi-million-dollar producer for the company, headed by Tommie and Carl Alfonso. “(Carl) would always say. ‘Sherry listings are like having money in the bank!’” she recalls. “In my opinion, they were the matriarch and patriarch of the real estate profession on the Mississippi Gulf Coast in the 1980s.” Her husband’s family has long been a trusted name in the industry, and she proved to be a natural fit for the business. “My decision to join the real estate
profession has (led to) a very rewarding career,” Owen says, “and I have no doubt God directed my path.” A MENTOR Now with her wealth of experience and accomplishments, Sherry has assumed the role of mentor to both her daughter and daughter-in-law, Danielle Owen, with whom she works at Owen and Co. “She has a way of making her clients feel at ease about anything and everything,” says Danielle, a broker associate with the company. “She has also taught me that you can never stop learning.”

HOME sponsored by Sherry says being the best means never stagnating. When she entered the business, she didn’t have the advantage of a smartphone, and computer technology was just catching up with the multiple listing service, or MLS. SUCCESS “The way to succeed in this market is to constantly remain abreast of changes, and with the advent of social media, marketing techniques are unlimited,” Sherry explains. “Similarly, it is essential to remain informed of the general real estate activities on the Gulf Coast — including but not limited to changes in financing, insurance, real estate rules, legal issues and the latest trends in marketing.” When she first became licensed, Danielle says she would pick her mother-in-law’s brain often, wanting to glean all the knowledge she could. She also would ride around with Sherry to observe how she interacted with clients and peers. “The part I loved most was going to showings, listing appointments and closings with her,” Danielle recalls. “I was in awe; she did it all so effortlessly.” Tiffany, a dual-licensed Realtor and certified real estate appraiser, had the benefit of being raised in the family business, watching her mother negotiate deals and counsel clients. As an adult, her admiration has only increased. FAMILY FOCUSED “From a family standpoint, she is selfless and graceful with her husband, mother, siblings, five children and 16 grandchildren,” Tiffany says. “From a business standpoint, she works endlessly and diligently to ensure everyone is receiving the best possible outcome.” MUTUAL ADMIRATION The respect is mutual, Sherry says, noting that Tiffany and Danielle are award-winning sellers in their own right. Tiffany, who is raising five children as a single mother, is working on her broker’s license and, as an appraiser, has an advantage staying abreast of the market, Sherry says. “Tiffany is very reliable and can do it all,” her mother raves, noting that she also holds a nursing degree. “She’s a 46

very organized, hard worker.” Danielle, who earned her broker’s license last year, has a master’s degree in business. “Danielle has successfully covered the real estate spectrum by sales involving commercial land (and) homes, (and) leased commercial property,” Sherry says. “(She) is married to my son, Mitch, and I know he is very supportive as she builds her clientele and business.” Most importantly, the proud matriarch says of her protégés, “Their character, dedication and honesty are virtues that I am deeply proud of. They both enjoy an impeccable character.” All three women share a passion for helping others find their dream home, and they remain close inside and outside of the office. They have dinner together, gather for family events and, of course, talk shop. AGENT-CLIENT RELATIONSHIP Sherry emphasizes that the Golden Rule for life applies in real estate: Treat clients as you would like to be treated. “It is essential that a Realtor remains in touch with clients — past and present,” she says. “The needed tools for success include the very important virtue of listening to your clients and participating in seminars and other current events geared toward educating yourself so that you can assist and educate your clients.” WHAT’S NEXT Going forward, Tiffany says she plans to excel in real estate herself by working hard, expanding her client base and following in Sherry’s footsteps as a broker. “Whether it be something new from my mother, a real estate convention in San Francisco, continuing education hours, a difficult appraisal order or the stateSHERRY'S WISDOM wide broker course,” she says, “I am always learning.” Sherry Owen is known for Danielle says she inher commitment to her tends to continue growing clients, professionalism the Owen and Co. name, and knowledge of the building on the legacy that Coast. A
s the personal computer has revolutionized our lives over the past three decades, smart home technology is seeking to revolutionize our homes. But what exactly is a smart home? A smart home is one in which appliances, utilities, televisions, HVAC systems, lighting, garage doors, swimming pools, computers, audio systems and security systems can communicate with each other — and with you. These systems can be monitored and controlled remotely using almost any device that can connect to the Internet (e.g. your laptop, tablet or phone). ENTERTAINMENT Entertainment systems are the gateway into the smart home. Many homeowners have installed a smart TV to connect to streaming services like Netflix, Hulu or Amazon Prime. Your favorite TV shows and movies can be streamed to any room in the house. Audio systems such as Sonos make it easy to wirelessly stream music to any area. In fact, you can listen to jazz in your kitchen while your spouse listens to country music in the garage and your kids stream their favorite cartoon from Netflix in the living room. Want to add speakers or a television outside or in a remote location? No problem. Almost all newer systems are wireless. CONVENIENCE You just arrived at your office, but you think you may have left the garage door open at home. If you have a smart garage door, you can check it (and close/open it) remotely. Wireless systems from Nest allow you to control your heating and air remotely while smart doorbells from Ring allow you to see who is at your front door (and hold a conversation with them) from almost anywhere in the world. Are you at the grocery store but don’t remember if you have milk at home? Login to your smart refrigerator to see exactly what you have inside. In fact, in many urban areas, you can place the grocery order directly from your fridge (and have it delivered to your door). Would you like to keep your lawn nice and green? on lawn sprinklers to keep the grass watered. These controllers also can regulate landscape lighting and swimming pools. PEACE OF MIND Integrated home alarms, camera systems and door locks make it easy to check on your property when you’re away — or simply add an extra layer of security when you’re at home. Does your child keep losing her door key? Install a smart lock that uses her fingerprint (or can be unlocked remotely with your cell phone). Today’s systems use wireless technology with cellular backups to make it more difficult for a would-be thief to compromise the system. Some smart home systems include water sensors to monitor for leaks behind refrigerators or in your attic. If water is detected, your plumbing automatically is turned off to avoid water damage or a flood. In addition to smart thermostats, smart smoke alarms and carbon monoxide sensors can be added to keep your family safe. GO GREEN Are you interested in saving money or reducing your carbon footprint? A smart blind controller can automatically raise or lower your window blinds based on the time of day and the position of the sun to keep your home at the right temperature. Smart thermostats can sense when you move and automatically adjust the temperature in the house if you’re at home or away. Ready to take your house to school? Most of today’s systems are extremely user-friendly and can be installed by the average homeowner in almost no time. If you need additional help, many brands also offer concierge installation services for a fee. What to expect when buying a home
Buying a home is one of the biggest investment decisions you will ever make, and it can be very stressful. Here are some quick tips to help you navigate the purchase process: • Make sure you have enough cash available for earnest money, a home inspection, an appraisal and a down payment. • Choose your lender wisely. Find a lender you trust who has your best interest at heart. • Get a pre-approval/qualification letter before starting the process. It’s important to know your limits. • Find a real estate professional who makes you feel comfortable. A great Realtor will be your partner throughout the process. • List your “must haves” and “have nots.” Be realistic with your wish list, and be prepared to compromise. It’s important to understand that no house is perfect. Include the neighborhood(s)/school district you want to live in. • Once you find the home that meets your criteria, do a bit of homework with your Realtor. Shop insurance rates, understand the possible appreciation of the home if you plan to sell in the future and consider the annual taxes. All of that will figure into your mortgage costs. • Read the property disclosures carefully, and be prepared to ask questions. • Make your offer. If you are serious about the home, make sure the offer is a good one that March-April 2019 52

is appealing to the seller. This is also where you will need to give your Realtor an earnest money check. Once you’ve submitted the offer, be prepared for a counter. Once the offer is accepted, you will need to schedule a home inspection. Throughout the inspection process, you should look for any major issues that may prevent you from moving forward. Next, your lender will order an appraisal to determine the value of the home. If the home appraises lower than your offer, it’s time to go back to the seller to negotiate price. Order the “WDIR,” or “Wood Destroying Insect Report,” if one was not provided during the home inspection. When all is clear and closing time comes, be sure to do a walkthrough and be prepared for your move. Once those keys are in your hands, congratulations! You are a home owner! I always make sure to tell my clients that they will need to change over the utilities and get a professional housekeeper to do
a deep cleaning before moving in. Also, be sure to change the locks. You never know how many people had keys to the home before you bought it.
I hope this will help guide you through the home-buying process. Good luck! Lemoine-Raymond is owner/broker with HL Raymond Properties and executive producer of Inside Out with HL Raymond Properties (TV series). She can be reached at (228) 466-6643 or hlraymondproperties@gmail.com.

Imagine you’re a buyer, and your real estate agent has 10 houses to show you today. When you drive up to what could be your dream home, you see a broken railing and children’s toys strewn across a weed-filled lawn. You’re probably going to say, “Let’s move on,” skipping the showing appointment entirely. Curb appeal not only attracts potential buyers who happen to be passing by; it also draws agents to book a showing for their clients. When a property looks unkempt, it scares off potential buyers (unless they’re looking for a tear-down at a rock-bottom price). To enhance curb appeal: • Cut the lawn and ensure fallen leaves and weeds are removed. Keep walkways and driveways freshly swept. • Add planted urns or hanging plants to the entrance area. • Repair or replace any obvious defects to the front door/hardware, mailboxes, railings, address sign or lights. • Move garbage and recycling containers from the front of the house or 54
March-April 2019
tuck them neatly in a garage or shed. • Pressure wash the exterior and decks. 2. STASH YOUR KEEPSAKES AND KEEP YOUR HOME CLUTTER FREE De-cluttering is essential, especially when you remember that many people move because they feel too crowded in their current homes. You’ll probably have to go through each closet more than once to get its contents down to the absolute essentials, but it’s worth the effort. Consider that any time you spend now on this task will make packing and moving that much easier. Rent a storage locker to hold your belongings. 3. AVOID SCARING BUYERS AWAY WITH A TO-DO LIST You don’t want potential buyers focusing on one flaw after another during a showing. You want them to fall in love with your home and imagine themselves living there — not thinking about how much less they should offer you because of everything they’ll have to do.
4. COLOR IS YOUR FRIEND WHEN IT’S TIME TO SELL A HOUSE White walls often look cold and sterile, unless you warm the room up with accent colors and patterns. If you have to repaint a home’s interior, choose a pleasing color palette that allows each room to flow nicely into the next. All colors should go together. 5. Make a big impact with a little art By strategically using art, you can enhance a home’s perceived value and draw the eye away from tiny flaws. These are just a few of the many things that can be done to improve your home’s appearance and to make it more appealing to homebuyers. While the steps can be time consuming, the results are worth it! Holly Gibbs is a Standard Real Estate Principles (SREP)-certified broker associate and Realtor with Century 21 J. Chalk Paint Y I D
Chalk paint has a plaster-of-Paris medium mixed in the paint to make a self-grabbing product. This allows for less prep work in the beginning. Vintage Flamingo in Gulfport sells Dixie Bell products exclusively at the store for your start-to-finish project. Visit a yard sale, church sale or your favorite resale shop. Find a piece of wood furniture that whispers your name when you stroll by. That is the perfect piece for your DIY project. I always sit the piece of furniture in the room where I want it before painting it. I walk by it several times a day and see what color comes to mind within the space. You don’t want to have to repaint your room around one piece of furniture. Hopefully it will speak to you like my coastal end tables. HERE IS THE PROCESS I USED FOR MY PROJECT: • To prepare for whitewashing the tabletops, I sanded off the old finish using a belt sander to make the process quicker; a palm sander works fine. Wear glasses and goggles while sanding, and sand in the same direction as the wood grain. Sand outside or in a well-ventilated room. I have a furry friend as an audience. • After sanding, dust the table with a clean, dry paintbrush. Wipe down any remaining residue with a damp cloth. Spread out a tarp or drop cloth when you bring the tables inside to paint. A workspace or garage is ideal to avoid painting in the house. • I start with the feet or base of a project. I flip the tables upside down to ensure I have paint coverage on all legs. Drying time should be considered during a DIY project. Chalk paint is thick, and depending on the original wood color, often only requires one-coat coverage. I like to add two tablespoons of water and put two coats on the surface. If you don’t like brushstrokes in your paint, lightly sand between coats of paint with a fine grit sand paper and a block sander. I started painting the handles during my drying time. I used metallic gold base and top coat on the handles. Once I was satisfied with my paint coverage and color, I flipped the tables over to whitewash. • For whitewash, you need to water down your paint generously. I use a plastic cup, fill it half full of water and dip my paintbrush in the paint once. Then I stir the brush in the water. You can test the color on the back of the piece if you are unsure. If you want it

more transparent, add water. To make it less transparent, add more paint. I whitewashed with two coats of the watereddown paint. • Feel free to add the element of surprise by painting the inside of the drawer with a bold color or a stencil. Use chalk paint and dab the color over the stencil. Sand it lightly after it dries to create a weathered affect, or just seal it. • I sealed the tabletop, base and handles with Gator Hide. It’s a water barrier sealant that protects the surface from glass rings, pets and most kids. You can sit your champagne glass right on top of the surface, and it won’t leave a mark. Yes, it is acceptable to toast yourself to celebrate how awesome you are for completing your first DIY project.

DIY
Pallet or Deck Board Wall/Island By Holly Lemoine-Raymond | BSLShoofly.com
BEFORE
TO MAKE A PALLET WALL OR ISLAND, YOU WILL NEED THE FOLLOWING: • Dark paint • Fence boards or pallets • Safety glasses • Sawzall • Circular or compound saw (compound saw is a little faster) • Gloves • Tape measure (always measure twice and cut once!) • Nails • Hammer — or, for faster results, a nail gun • Carpenter’s pencil • Paint brush • 220-grit sandpaper to smooth out some of the rough edges
Transforming a room with a little paint and some salvaged pallet or fence boards is easier than you think. DIY diva Holly Lemoine Raymond — broker, owner and designer of HL Raymond Properties LLC in Bay St. Louis — shares her secrets. When our clients and visitors come in, one of the first things they notice is the pallet wall with our logo on it. It’s a great focal piece and makes a great conversation starter. When I tell them that using recycled and repurposed wood created the pallet wall, island and other features around the office, they are amazed. One of my favorite things about recycling wood is that the wood is never flawless. It’s a great reminder that nothing and no one is perfect. I’m an imperfect person who likes to take old, worn-out items and turn them into beautiful things. Step 1: Pick the area to be updated and remove any existing trim or outlets. Prep the area by wiping it down and removing any excess dust. S tep 2: Measure the area you will be working with so you can be sure to have enough paint and boards. Step 3: Using a dark color, paint the area and allow it to dry. Remember, this does not have to be perfect. The purpose of the paint is to hide the small
imperfections of the boards. The color I used was gauntlet gray. Step 4: While your painted area is drying, use this time to deconstruct your pallets, deck or fence boards. Depending on the look you are trying to achieve, you can stain or whitewash your boards. I prefer to leave the boards in their natural color. This gives more of a rustic or industrial look, which is the style I prefer. S tep 5: Let’s cut our boards down to size! I like cutting the boards in random sizes. Some boards I trim off a little on the end, and others I cut in half or three quarters. Step 6: Start putting your puzzle together. Stagger your pieces and vary the shades of wood. Again, the more imperfect, the better! Step 7: Stand back and enjoy the view! I hope you enjoyed this project. It is fun to bring things new life. If you’d like to see how we used recycled wood in our office, please stop by for a visit. Our team would love to see you and have you sign our chalkboard wall!

ABUNDANT LIVING Along with its striking beauty, The Mississippi Gulf Coast offers a wealth of top-tier neighborhoods that offer convenience, comradery, exceptional amenities and much more. If you’re looking for a place to settle, we’ve compiled some of the most desirable, livable communities in the region — all of which are waiting to welcome you home.
FLORENCE GARDENS
58
March-April 2019
Florence Gardens was designed to be timeless. Located in Gulfport, three miles east of Highway 49 or 1.7 miles west of Highway 605, the community is steeped in “rich Southern traditions,” according to www.florencegardens. com, “which have informed our residential and commercial growth … .” “Seemingly at odds with our modern, hectic, cookie-cutter world, perhaps that’s why our ‘old’ way of life feels so new and fresh for those who make Florence Gardens their hometown,” the website states. Within Florence Gardens’ 420 acres are a wealth of amenities and conveniences, including a pool, a natural lake, a post office, a community garden, woodland preserves and even an independent school — Hope Academy. Residents Andrew and Teckie Hinkebein especially enjoy biking on the boardwalks and to the pool, as well as walking around Lake Florence. They also like to cook, so venturing to the community garden is a preferred way to spend an afternoon. The garden serves as a place to
socialize and share tips, and the Hinkebeins note that residents also gather for farmer’s markets, Easter egg hunts, Halloween and holiday parties and more. The diverse mix of neighbors includes transplants and Coast natives, all of varied ages and backgrounds. Having lived in several places along the Gulf Coast, the pair was seeking plenty of green space and ample walkability when they came to the neighborhood last March. “We wanted the ability to walk our dogs in a low-traffic area, surrounded by beautiful, well-kept homes and amenities,” they say. “We found that with Florence Gardens.” Overall, the Hinkebeins credit Florence Gardens with enhancing their quality of life. Besides being peaceful and centrally located, the couple say homes in Florence Gardens “are built to a very high standard.” “It was important to us to buy in a neighborhood where we felt our investment would hold its value,” they add. “We absolutely recommend Florence Gardens to others.” Learn more about the neighborhood at www. florencegardens.com.
TRADITION Tradition — a 4,000-acreplus, master-planned community, just had the right atmosphere and aesthetic for resident Rosemary Raines. “I feel like I’m in my little corner of Mayberry up here,” says Raines, who has lived in the community for eight years. “It’s just so nice.” Raines calls the neighborhood, located north of Biloxi and Gulfport at the intersection of highways 605 and 67, “pretty” and “appealing.” Tradition bills itself as “your new hometown on the Mississippi Gulf Coast,” with features that include neighborhood parks, a lake, walking trails, a neighborhood YMCA and pool, and much more in the planning. At full build out, according to the Tradition website, the community will have 15,000 residential units, 2 million square feet of commercial development and 35,000 residents. Raines says her neighbors so far include people of all ages, from retirees to younger families with children. “People are not in your business here, but they are friendly and neighborly,” Raines says. A range of options can accommodate residents in any stage of life, including cottages, estates, apartments, townhomes and retirement community-style housing. Regular activities like a bunko group, a Bible study and a book club help residents get acquainted, Raines says, and the gym also serves as a “social spot.” Safety was a prime factor when she came to Tradition, and Raines says the community meets all of her criteria in that area. With its “high and dry” location, she adds, severe storms are less of a concern. Resident Laurie Tidwell says she chose Tradition for
several reasons, but primarily, “The minute we drove into the entrance, it just felt like home.” Besides the YMCA, easy access to health care, movie nights and other aspects that make Tradition livable, Tidwell says it offers peace of mind and “a sense of nostalgia.” With its many amenities and advantages, she adds, there’s nowhere else she’d rather live. “Whether it is a nice lazy day inside my house, a breezy day relaxing in the hammock, a trip to the playground with my grandchildren or an afternoon on the front porch visiting with neighbors as they walk by, life at Tradition is the best,” Tidwell says. “In a society where people are often so busy with everyday life that they never have time to know their neighbors, all of us at Tradition take great pride in the fact that we not only know our neighbors, but often our neighbors become like family to us.”

HOME sponsored by THE OAKS With it’s homes situated on tree-lined streets, The Oaks development in Pass Christian lives up to its name. Community residents enjoy an idyllic setting while also having the benefit of convenience. “It’s close to I-10, so there’s easy access to really anywhere along the Coast,” says Shawna Dunaway, marketing director for Elliott Homes. The highly-rated Oaks Golf Club (the course is rated among the top 10 in the state), is surrounded by the community, which boasts an appealing list of amenities that includes a clubhouse, pool and tennis courts. Parents will appreciate the community’s location within the highly rated Pass Christian School District. Restrictive covenants preserve the community’s aesthetics while a part-time security guard monitors the single access point into the subdivision. TOSCANA A brand-new community in Ocean Springs, Toscana promises its residents a beautiful lifestyle. A main draw for the desirable subdivision, Dunaway says, is living in the community of Ocean Springs.
62
March-April 2019
“For growing families, it’s being in a top-rated school district,” Dunaway says, noting that the community is mere minutes from downtown. The homes themselves, she adds, “are a bit more high-end.” Prospective residents work with an online sales counselor to choose a home design that fits within the community’s covenant, which they can tweak with numerous customization options. “Our mission is to improve the quality of life along the Coast,” Elliott Homes’ website states about Toscana, “and this community offers luxury living at its finest.” DESTINY PLANTATION Cobblestone-paved roadways, mature landscaping and brick fencing lend an air of stateliness and serenity to Destiny Plantation, located on Brodie Road in Biloxi. The property features 61 large, single-family lots, with 31 waterfront properties. Twenty-seven island lots can only be accessed via a picturesque 450-foot bridge. Explaining what makes Destiny Plantation special, Ron Carr, the original broker for the development,
says, “It’s the whole atmosphere of where it’s located, and the beauty of the development itself.” “The clubhouse is very nicely done,” he says, “with great views of the back bay of Biloxi.” While residents may feel far removed from the activity of the city, they’re only 15 minutes from casinos, restaurants and other attractions. TIMBER RIDGE Given its proximity to the semi-private, 18-hole Pass Christian Isles Golf Course, as well as Bay St. Louis, Timber Ridge residents have no shortage of recreational activities to choose from. “There’s a variety; we have a lot of different interests,” says Cathy Eagan, president of the Timber Ridge Property Owners Association. The community, comprised of 1,400 residential
lots, is covenant restrictive, “which ensures that property owners benefit from architectural control and lot maintenance standards,” according to the POA website. Among Timber Ridge’s attractions are a private community saltwater swimming pool and bathhouse, tennis court, boat launch and picnic area. Residents also enjoy landscaped entrance areas and private security, the website states — all of which make Timber Ridge “one of the most desirable communities on the Gulf Coast.” “Because we’re a bit smaller, it’s more of a family community,” Eagan says of living at Timber Ridge. “In a larger [community], you may not know the people around you.” Activities throughout the year, including a golf cart Mardi Gras parade, allow neighbors to get to know each other, she adds.

Are you willing to pay the price to get
top dollar?
Understanding market conditions is always the first obstacle in selling a home. Realtors® do not set the price of By Stephanie Shaw a home. Real estate professionals, agents and appraisers share a database of information that only they can access. From this information, they can create a comparative market analysis or an appraisal that demonstrates what the housing market will tolerate. The databases consist of homes that are currently on the market and the historical data of past sales. Along with this information, an experienced agent will be able to discuss other events that may have an 64
March-April 2019
impact on the value and the length of time it takes your home to sell. Keep in mind that elections and interest rates, as well as local, state and federal policy, can impact value and days on the market. Living on the Mississippi Gulf Coast, we are all too familiar with Mother Nature; she, too, can be an important variable. Emotional detachment is the next most important place to focus. Buyers do not care that your home is a story of who you are and a collection of the things you love. Buyers are looking to start a story of their own. Instead of trying to sell someone your story, focus on getting the home ready so they can see themselves living there. When getting your home show ready, the three most important steps are
to de-clutter, depersonalize and deep clean. While it is important to disclose any repairs and upgrades you have made to the property, remember the value of a home is not determined by the dollar value of the upgrades you have completed. Nobody likes to stand out from the crowd more than I do, but remember — neutral sells. We tend to customize with paint color, flooring choices and architectural style, which can create obstacles for consumers and narrow the pool of interested, qualified buyers. Think long and hard before customizing for the sake of customizing. Finally, lets talk about inconvenience. Selling a home is like making sausage — it can get messy, but the
end result is amazing! You must keep the end in mind when someone calls you at the last minute to show or cancels a showing. Life and people are unpredictable. However, I honestly can say it has been my experience that it is rare for someone to intentionally stand someone up. Remember we live in a world of instant gratification, and people want what they want when they want it. Buyers could have been shopping online for months before venturing out. They have set their criteria, looked at everything available to them and chosen your home to walk through. Here is your chance! Be ready to show at a moments notice, and learn to breathe through the challenges that may arise. Top dollar is possible in any market if you are willing to pay the price. For more information regarding what to expect when selling your home, contact Latter & Blum Shaw Properties. We will be happy to email you a checklist.

Rose Cottage for location, comfort By Jennifer Gentile Although more than 80 years have passed, the bloom hasn’t left Rose Cottage. IF YOU GO Located in Bay St. Louis’ Rose Cottage historic district, the popu135 DeMontluzin lar vacation rental attracts St., Bay St. Louis 40 to 60 guests each year, Vrbo.com, promising comfort and reference convenience. #497992 “It is popular among For booking tourists, travelers and snow assistance, call birds who want to get out (888) 640-7927 of the colder, northern parts of the country,” says Joey Manieri of Manieri Real Estate, which has been managing the property since 2013. Visitors come from throughout the United States, he adds, and as far afield as Canada and Europe. Since it was built in 1935, the cottage largely has been owned by one family, according to current owner Ann Hager. When the family’s plans changed, she bought the property in 2012 and completed extensive renovations before welcoming renters the following year. The 1,100-square-foot cottage can sleep six people, with two bedrooms and two futons as well as a kitchen, living room, dining room and utility room. Despite the property’s quaint qualities, guests don’t sacrifice any modern luxuries, such as a washer and dryer, cable, wireless Internet, a coffee maker and cooking utensils. Outside, guests can find plenty 66
March-April 2019
of useful features for relaxation and recreation. Hager says she plans to add retractable canvas awnings for the front deck, as “some of our snowbirds do love to soak in the sun on the deck.” “The deck is convenient for barbecues,” Hager adds. “The carport affords a great covered place to play or entertain.” Boat owners will appreciate a second gate in the front fence that allows parking access. Perhaps most importantly, the cottage is within easy walking distance to the beach, harbor, restaurants, and shopping. Bicycles and golf carts also are available to rent. “The aspects that guests enjoy the most, as stated in the guest VRBO reviews, are location, homey atmosphere, convenience, comfort, cleanliness, porches, pet friendliness and, yes, management,” Manieri says. Visitors stay anywhere from two nights to two weeks, he adds, but some have remained as long as three months in the winter. The property has earned dozens of five-star reviews from past renters, with one praising the cottage as “extremely well maintained and immaculately clean.” Another raved, “This was a great place to stay and enjoy the local hot spots.” Many reviewers said they look forward to a return visit.

Home sweet home starts with
Southern Charm By Jennifer Gentile Not all furniture is created equal, and Rachel Powell wants customers to know what they’re buying. “You can get a piece that lasts, or you could be getting into something that will break way before [your] financing is over,” says Powell, who owns Southern Charm Furniture and Design with her husband, Matthew. “We know this is not a topic everyone studies, so we just want to take the time to teach them the difference.” As they shop Southern Charm’s 15,000 square feet of showroom space, Powell promises her guests guidance in a “relaxed and inviting atmosphere.” A coffee bar and calming Christian music from K-Love set the tone for a positive experience, she says. “Our award-winning design team will take the time with our clients to listen to their needs and their vision…,” the owner adds. “Southern Charm wants to take the time to learn about the family to make sure we make it not only beautiful, but functional for them.” Although the business recently celebrated its one-year anniversary, Powell says it was years in the making. Both she and her husband grew up in the furniture and design industry, with Powell starting to work with her mother in a furniture store at age 15. “She is my role model, and I loved taking every chance I could learning things and watching her,” Powell says. “I knew I wanted to be just like her and make her proud of me one day.” Both members of the husband-and-wife team once ran multi-million dollar enterprises, she adds, but “it was always a dream to own our own business.” “We truly thought it was out of reach,” Powell says, “but after a long time and a lot of praying, it seemed like it all started falling into place.” Discussions began about three years ago, then an opportunity arose at the Gulfport building Southern Charm now occupies. Having started with just themselves, the Powells now employ five team members with plans to grow. Within its first year, Southern Charm already has started collecting awards: First place in interior design and second place in best furniture store in the Sun Herald People’s Choice Awards and best furniture store honors from WXXV. In addition, the business has partnered with Elliott 68

Teen drug abuse: Know the signs By Jennifer Gentile
In the war on teen drug abuse, there’s good news and bad news. First, the good: The annual Monitoring the Future survey, released in December, found that use of some illicit drugs had either plateaued or declined. The survey, which polled 44,482 students from nearly 400 public and private schools nationwide, also showed a drop in binge drinking, along with lessened abuse of prescription opioids — a class of painkillers that includes morphine, OxyContin and Percocet to name a few. Now for the bad news: The battle against this ongoing scourge is far from won, particularly in Mississippi and the local area. “In this region, teenage drug use is a huge problem — one that many have not yet addressed,” says Shelbi Lewis, a substance abuse counselor at New Season Biloxi Treatment Center. Lewis cites statistics from the Office of Adolescent Health, within the U.S. Department of Health and Human Services, which show marijuana use among high school students in Mississippi stood at 35 percent — compared to the national average of 39 percent. Inhalant use in the state was at 12 percent, with the national average at 7 percent. Cocaine use also was slightly higher in Mississippi — 7 percent compared to 5 percent nationally. “These numbers are alarming and scary,” Lewis says. “This shows that, on average, the amount of substance use is higher in this state than the national average.” Lewis also stresses that all teens are targets for drug use — not just those from impoverished or abusive backgrounds. “I think that teens are susceptible to this problem because it is readily available in many places and it is glorified in music, TV shows and social media,” she says. “Rappers, comedians, and actors all portray ‘the good life of getting high.’ Nothing today is censored for our children.” Statistics show that once teens develop a drug abuse habit, they are far more likely to battle addiction as adults. Lewis reports speaking to over 30 people per day who admit that they started using illicit substances at age 12 or earlier.
A parent’s best defense is remaining vigilant, she says, and recognizing the signs that their child could be in trouble. Some indicators to look for include behavioral changes, such as poor academic performance, skipping school or defiant actions; psychological changes, like mood swings, lower motivation or slurred/rapid speech; health issues, such as sleep disturbances, constant headaches, appetite changes or profuse sweating; and changes in personal appearance, like poor hygiene, burns or the smell of illicit substances. “Parents should always check to see if they find things such as paraphernalia, large or hidden amounts of cash or any kinds of residue from drugs or alcohol,” Lewis says. If a teen has an addiction issue, Lewis says parents should seek out a medical professional, who can help through periods of withdrawal or intoxication. Next, they should enlist a mental health professional to address the underlying cause of the substance abuse. Finally, she advises finding a mentor or a mentorship program, which offers the teen “an outlet and a safe place.” “Parents should also strive to be more engaged with their child, even if it is 30 minutes to one hour per week, spending more time talking and doing activities,” Lewis says. While her facility only accepts adults over 18, Lewis says, staff usually can refer parents to other agencies and resources depending on their needs. New Season Biloxi Treatment Center can be reached at (228) 207-1248. LaBella’s Salon owner strives to make every woman feel beautiful In 2007, Julia Shivonna Green launched LaBella’s Salon in Gulfport with a hope and a prayer. “Initially my ex-coworkers and neighbors were my only clientele,” recalls Shivonna Green – who found herself at a disadvantage not being from the area. “Oftentimes, I provided free services for advertising purposes, which did generate clientele.” Shivonna Green graduated from cosmetology school in Tuscaloosa, Ala., in 1995, and after several years of working in the insurance industry, she left the corporate world to pursue her calling as a stylist. “My oldest sister, who is deceased, introduced me to this industry when she was a cosmetology student,” says the Demopolis, Ala., native. “I was a model and began to take an interest in it as a teen.” At the time, with two young children to raise, Shivonna Green sought a workplace www.gcwmultimedia.com

near their schools with a family-friendly atmosphere. “Unfortunately, finding a salon that fit my personality and allowed my kids to drop in every so often wasn’t as obtainable as I hoped,” Shivonna Green says — so she chose to go solo. After vetting several spots, she chose Norwood Village Shopping Center “because of its diverse community and being close to my home.” The salon name, which Shivonna Green picked with help from friends from Cincinnati, means “beautiful woman.” To spread the word about LaBella’s, she walked neighborhoods, sent letters to churches to read in their announcements, placed signs and mailed postcards. The salon opened with very little capital, Shivonna Green says — preventing her from hiring contractors and necessitating long hours. “We pretty much endured some very long days and nights to meet our opening date,” she says. Given her own experience of relocation, Shivonna Green found she could relate to military women and spouses, who became her focus and helped her business grow. “The beautiful thing about military personnel is that, whenever they were scheduled to relocate, they would replace themselves as a client with a friend or new coworker,” she says. “Eventually, my business started to increase due to opportunities that were presented by discharged, retiring veterans, spouses and civilians.”
Today, LaBella’s is two doors down from its original location and serves a largely African-American clientele. The salon specializes in healthy hair, precision-tapered short styles, vibrant color and natural-looking extensions. Besides services, customers can buy professional beauty products, such as shampoos, conditioners, holding sprays, oils, natural hair products, hair extensions, satin head wraps, and satin bonnets. Chi oil sheen, Chi holding spray and Design Essentials edge control are among its best-selling items. After working alone for the first year, Shivonna Green stared hiring contract stylists – with three employed there 78

2019 COLOR TREND: By Brenda Blount
Shades of yellow You know a color trend is happening when not one, but 20, designers at New York Fashion Week confirm yellow as the shade of Spring 2019. Before color authority Pantone called Aspen gold the yellow of the season, design houses from Kate Spade to Brandon Maxwell and Monse were sending models down their runways in hues from bright marigold to sunny mustard. According to color psychology, yellow can grab attention quickly; it can be warm and bright. The color yellow can lift your mood and elicit positive feelings. As Vincent Van Gogh once said, “How wonderful yellow is. It stands for the sun.”
“How wonderful yellow is. It stands for the sun.” - Vincent Van Gogh Here are a few of my favorite looks. Don’t just wear the trend — make yellow your own. Brenda Blount, of A Better You Image Transformation, is a seasoned retail and fashion merchandising executive, image consultant, pageant coach and former model with more than 30 years of experience in the retail industry. From crystal to candles,
Heritage House has it all By Jennifer Gentile
Whatever the occasion, shoppers will find just what they’re looking for at Heritage House. Stacy Pair, who owns the store with her sister, Julie Gainey, says Heritage House prides itself on meeting every customer’s unique needs. The store, located at 738 East Pass Road in Gulfport, carries a wide variety of pottery, candles, jewelry, china and other fine inventory, as well as hosting an extensive bridal registry.
“Julie and I come from a family of female entrepreneurs,” Pair says. “We love working with brides and custom86

ers to find the perfect gift for someone — or for themselves.” The sisters purchased the popular store in 2018 from Deeann Stafford, who established it about 15 years ago. “Bringing in new items, while keeping the most popular lines established by Deeann, the staff of Heritage House Gifts is thrilled to still be working with brides and the general public all along the Gulf Coast,” Pair says. Heritage House caters to locals and visitors alike, Pair adds — offering brands such as Peter’s Pottery, Le Creuset, Tamara Childs, Waterford, PJ Harlow and Beekman 1802 — along with gourmet foods, Lolly Blossom and Laura McClendon jewelry, and more. “This is my go-to for gifts, pottery and candles!” one reviewer raves on Facebook. “The staff is always so helpful and sweet!” “Very friendly, and they have such cute gifts!” another poster exclaims. “You will not be disappointed!” On one side of the store, patrons can indulge in treats like silky lounge-
wear, infused olive oil and fragrant lotions. On the other, exquisite china pieces are displayed alongside all sizes and styles of stemware. Handmade metal pieces by Beatriz Ball delight the eyes in the form of pitchers, serving dishes and even ornaments. If shopping in person is not convenient, Heritage House offers an online store and gift registry at https://heritagehouse.bridgecatalog.com/. Customers can visit the site to learn what’s new, create or access registries, search different departments and browse best sellers. IF YOU GO 738 E. Jerika’s picks
by Jerika Vincent
Spring is almost here, which means it’s about time to hit the beach! Take some time out from your busy schedule and enjoy the beautiful views along the Gulf Coast. I am a business owner who is always working, but I have noticed the importance of taking time for yourself. Recharging your batteries is always the best way to become more successful and reach your goals faster. My advice for other business owners is to slow down and ensure the things you are doing now are being done correctly and not rushed. Aside from getting swimsuit ready, here are more things that I love:
FASHION FORWARD Keep up with the hottest fashions and fashionable people on my television show “Jerika’s Showcase!”
“I enjoy being around people who inspire me. I love the camera and I truly connect with people on and off camera … . I do compete with myself in every way. That’s what keeps me moving. But I believe in others succeeding, and I look for ways to help them succeed.” Watch “Jerika’s Showcase” WLOX ABC - SUNDAYS 4:30 P.M.

It starts with the
skin
Our skin is constantly changing with the weather, stress and pollution of everyday life. When you apply makeup, it is important to know what your skin is doing and how to properly prep it for makeup application. The ultimate goal is to make the face a smooth and even canvas, which will improve the look and longevity of your makeup. OIL CONTROL I am an avid fan of the Skin Refine Zone by MAC cosmetics. This product will work as a treatment overtime and also has an immediate effect once applied. It will shrink large pores and help absorb excess oil. You put it on right after you wash your face and focus it on your oiliest areas. SERUM Serums are meant to absorb deep into your skin and can help repair sun damage or reduce fine lines
94

and wrinkles. There are a multitude of serums out there for all different skin types and textures, so be sure to research which one is best for you. During the humid months, serums can sometimes take the place of your moisturizer. FACE OILS Face oils have made quite an impression in the beauty industry. These oils ideally are meant for those who have extremely dry skin. However, Sonia Roselli makes a product called Water Oil that is also great for oily skin. Face oils are meant to be applied after your serums but before your moisturizer. The oils absorb into your skin quickly, which prevents water loss and keeps the skin plump and hydrated. MOISTURIZER This is a must for everyone. There are moisturizers for oily skin,
by Jackie Merlau Jmerlaumakeup.com which help control the sebum level throughout the day. Other moisturizers help keep dry skin hydrated and healthy. Consider a moisturizer with an SPF for your daily wear. ROSEWATER Rosewater and mineralized sprays are meant to calm the redness in your skin prior to makeup application and also can help oxidize and hydrate your makeup after it has been applied. Feel free to spritz this on before, during or after makeup application, but take note — this is not a setting spray.

HEALTH By Bridget Suire
My loved one’s behavior has changed –
A
WHAT TO DO NEXT
s our loved ones age, we will witness many changes. Some of these are expected for people of a certain age, and some are surprising. Some may be subtle and occur over time; others come on very quickly. The changes that can be most concerning are those dealing with mental health. Some are minor, something as simple as remembering a name, losing track of keys or missing a doctor’s appointment. Our senior loved ones may remember a word, but not the meaning. (They might recognize the word “key,” for example, but they have forgotten what a “key” does.) It could be that their memory is delayed and they need a little more time to remember. They may repeat a story or information over and over. They may cry more easily watching a movie or a commercial. Other changes can be more severe. Memory may become more difficult.
They may not remember their name, the day of the week or even the year. They may stop attending to their hygiene and regularly taking a shower, combing their hair or brushing their teeth. They may start to hear or see things that are not there. They may start to think about or take actions to hurt themselves or others. When these behaviors occur, they can be frightening. We sometimes don’t know what to do, so we don’t do anything — but these behaviors warrant action.
If you see worrying signs of behavioral change, bring your loved one to his or her primary care doctor. If you see worrying signs of behavioral change, bring your loved one to his or her primary care doctor. Have the doctor check for a medical reason behind the behavior, such as urinary
tract infection, hypothyroid or hyperthyroid conditions, Parkinson’s disease or medication interactions. The primary care physician also would need to rule out alcohol or drug abuse, as such substances could be causing or contributing to these behaviors. Once medical reasons are eliminated, ask the primary care physician to refer the senior to a psychiatrist. If their conduct is such that something must be done right away (if they are exhibiting aggressive behavior or they are disoriented, for example), a trip to a hospital emergency department may be in order. The senior also may be referred to a behavioral health hospital for an inpatient stay, either by a primary care physician or an ER provider. Be sure to talk to your loved ones now about what they want in the future. Do they want to be able to stay at home with a personal caregiver? Do they want to live with one of their www.gcwmultimedia.com
99
children or relatives? Do they want to live in an assisted living facility? Do they want to give someone power of attorney and have a contract signed in the event they are no longer able to make decisions for themselves? It is helpful to put the plan in writing and review it from time to time because sometimes loved ones change their minds. Remember, too, to take time for yourself. The care that you give to your loved one is only as good as the care you give to yourself. We are used to putting others before ourselves, but you can’t give what you don’t have. Women are like Mother Earth’s soup kitchens. We keep dishing out soup until the pot is bone dry. You have to take time for yourselves to replenish the pot. Otherwise, we are emptying our pots and have nothing left to give. Bridget Suire is a licensed social worker and director of behavioral health at Garden Park Medical Center. Due to its anti-inflammatory properties, CBD can reduce swelling in joints that often causes pain, which can solve a pain problem before it even starts. It also offers an analgesic effect that makes CBD topicals particularly popular for muscle and joint aches. Emerging research has targeted a few chronic pain conditions that CBD would be most effective to target. These conditions include: fibromyalgia, chronic migraine headaches, and pain related to autoimmune diseases. With a holistic approach that targets pain and inflammation CBD is sure to be a big player in the medical field for years to come.

March-April 2019
I started the keto diet in May of 2018, and that’s when the weight really started coming off. I felt so much better, I had great energy and mental clarity. Then I started intermittent fasting a couple of months later, and I have never felt better. I weigh less now than I ever have as an adult. I continue to work out and build muscle while also losing excess fat. My joint pain is practically gone, my sinus issues have cleared up and I have an incredible amount of energy. My friends started to notice how well keto was working for me, and I began coaching them after I finished my degree at Tulane. I have since lost, I would guess, over 30 pounds and have helped four people lose almost 90 pounds combined. HOW IT WORKED I know there’s a lot of skepticism surrounding keto, but it truly is sustainable and works for a lot of people when done correctly. I would say the most difficult part is the meal prep. However, you really have to meal prep with most healthy lifestyles. I do all my cooking for myself and the kids on Sunday. I don’t have them on strict keto, but they are on a low-carb lifestyle. There are plenty of times where I make a conscious decision to veer from the plan, but it isn’t that often. Temptation is not that hard to resist once you really see the benefits (both physically and mentally) of a healthy lifestyle. HOW I FEEL ABOUT MYSELF TODAY I am an entirely different person today than I was two years ago. My confidence and self-esteem are leaps and bounds better. That’s not just in terms of how I look, but how I think of myself. I started health coaching last year (which was on my five-year plan two years ago). I have goals this year that I never would have allowed myself to think I could accomplish before. I truly believe that once you see that you can reach your health goals, your mind opens up opportunities for a plethora of growth. MY ADVICE TO OTHERS My advice to others is always #StartToday and don’t let fear keep you from succeeding. So often people don’t want to start because they don’t have faith in themselves that they will succeed. Failure isn’t the end. Regroup, plan, move forward and remember — I have faith in you! You certainly will never succeed if you don’t try.

Turn back time for
There’s a famous song about a wish to turn back time — and now you can. If you’re among those wishing for more youthful skin, several products and services on the market today may give you the results you seek. For instance, the DefenAge line offers a new 3-D Eye Radiance cream formulated to rejuvenate the skin around the eyes with a technology-loaded formula. Scientific and clinical data shows that defensins, small peptides unusually rich in the amino acid cysteine, reprogram skin to turn younger every day — reversing aging. Basically, whenever you need to refresh or normalize your skin, you just need activate the skin’s reprograming mechanism. The Eye Radiance cream is designed to improve the visible health of the skin around the eyes and cause numerous improvements, including visible lifting, firming and smoothing of the upper eyelids, fading of dark circles and puffiness and reduced appearance of crow’s feet and fine lines. The holy grail of skincare in years past, and for years to come, is Retin-A. This product is sold under many labels; Tretinoin or Refissa are common names women recognize. People who are aging or wish to correct sun damage, skin texture or tone, reduce pore size, lighten or remove discoloration and reduce wrinkles or acne go straight to Retin-A. Why? Because it stimulates collagen and is proven to eliminate fine lines and wrinkles, clear pores to reduce acne outbreaks and correct scaring. The longer the use, the more youthful your skin will appear. I personally suffered with cystic acne as a young adult into my 30s. Fearing permanent scarring, I sought the guidance of a dermatologist who changed my world. He put me on glycolic products, Retin-A and facial sunscreen. I still use these today but combine them with ZO-line products, especially Vitamin C and Growth Factor serums to bring new, healthy skin to the surface and add defensins to wake up dormant skin cells. I know what it is like to take care of skin through all the decades of life — teens, 20s, 30s, 40s, 50s and soon-to-be 60s. This year, I turned 58 on Valentine's Day! Each stage is unique and different. We must be willing to change and 112

adapt to our skin’s needs. Is skin care and maintenance expensive? Honestly, an experienced aesthetician, dermatologist or plastic surgeon will have options for patients at several budget levels. Begin with medical-grade skin care to truly see change; give it a minimum of 90 days, or three skin cycles. Become sun safe. Wear wide-brim hats, sunglasses, UPF 50-plus clothing, and SPF 50 daily. Start slow if you’re new to skin care treatment products and treatment. Seek out treatments that fit your budget. You may want to begin with mild treatments like facials, microdermabrasion, dermaplaning or microneedling. Gradually move up to chemical peels, laser treatments and, if needed, injectables like Xeomin, Botox and fillers. Start looking years younger with healthy skin. Be patient — your skin did not age overnight or become damaged last week. It took time for many of the irregularities to show. Being consistent and choosing the right products for your skin type and lifestyle are extremely important. Be sure to follow the instructions provided by your aesthetician, physician and the product labels. I recommend doing a 24-to-48-hour patch test when adding a new product(s). You easily will be able to identify the product causing sensitivity or an allergic reaction. Eliminate a tired look by taking care of your skin, especially around your eyes, where skin often shows the effects of the environment, stress, tiredness and aging. I am a firm believer that corrective and protective products for the face should continue to the neck/décolleté — and do not forget your lips and hands. Begin today turning back the hands of time. The compliments will follow. DefenAge, ZO and Glyderm products and corrective treatments are available at physician and aesthetic offices. Deborah Meza is a licensed aesthetician, as well as a massage therapist, medical skin care and laser technician and Ideal Protein coach with the Woman’s Clinic P.A. in Gulfport. HEART ATTACK SYMPTOMS? DIAL 911 Heart Disease is the Number 1 Killer of Women in the US Women frequently discount the signs of a heart attack to the flu, indigestion or just being tired. It is important for women to know their list of heart attack symptoms*:
n Uncomfortable pressure, squeezing, fullness or pain in the center of your chest. It lasts more than a few minutes, or goes away and comes back.
n Pain or discomfort in one or both arms, the back, neck, jaw or stomach. n Shortness of breath with or without chest discomfort. n Other signs such as breaking out in a cold sweat, nausea or lightheadedness. n As with men, women’s most common heart attack symptom is chest pain or discomfort. But women are somewhat more likely than men to experience some of the other common symptoms, particularly shortness of breath, nausea/ vomiting and back or jaw pain. If you have any of these signs, call 911 and get to a hospital right away.

Is your house cluttered? What about your work desk? Your tool shed or garage? Is your car a disgusting pigsty? Do you procrastinate when it comes to organization or cleaning? Do you get derogatory comments from your spouse or your boss in these areas? If these comments fit you, were you diagnosed with attention deficit disorder (ADD) in school? You don’t outgrow the condition. Did you struggle to stay on task with homework? Did you drop out or not finish your degree? Have you jumped from job to job or been fired for lack of follow through with tasks requiring follow through? If any of the above rings true, you might have a treatable condition. Successful treatment changes lives — so how do you know? You can take the master questionnaire at www.addclinics.com, developed by Dr. Daniel Amen — a world leader in ADD. It allows self-scoring of the seven different types of ADD: classic (hyperactive), inattentive (sluggish), over-focused (impulsive), limbic (moody), temporal lobe (angry, unpredictable), ring of fire (bipolar) and anxious (anxiety). The questions were developed following 100,000 brain scans looking at the function of different brain segments,
like the frontal or temporal lobes. Abnormal scans correlate with abnormal behavior or cognition. If you score positive, your next move should be to consider treatment, including diet, exercise, supplements and medications. The good news is measurable results are usually fast, within 12 weeks. How would you score yourself, from zero to 10, on the following spectrums: Never focused to perfect focus, never complete task on time to perfect tasking, never organized to perfect organizer? These are the scores I use to assess treatment. Most patients with ADD score around three. Most can achieve seven to eight or higher with treatment. When they do, the clutter resolves, work is completed and spouses and bosses are happy — or at least happier! Dr. Stanford A. Owen practices in Gulfport, Mississippi. He is board certified in internal medicine and nutrition. He is certified as a master psycho-pharmacologist by the Neuroscience Education Institute. He may be contacted at (228) 864-9669 or drowenmd@drdiet.com.

Preeclampsia among biggest threats to pregnant women The condition called preeclampsia ranks as the second-leading cause of maternal deaths behind excessive bleeding. Preeclampsia is a complicated syndrome of uncertain cause, affecting up to 10 percent of all pregnancies. If not treated urgently, the condition can progress to eclampsia, with severe hypertension that can lead to seizures, stroke or death. The condition affects the baby as well, sometimes resulting in such devastating complications as prematurity, cerebral palsy or brain damage. Symptoms and signs of preeclampsia may become evident at home or during routine prenatal visits. An affected pregnant woman might notice rapid weight gain, severe headaches, blurred vision or dizziness. Swelling, called edema, occurs on the face, hands and feet. She might feel pain in her right upper belly near the liver. Sometimes she will notice a decrease in urine output due to kidney effects. A urine test might show protein leakage. The doctor might find that the mother has markedly increased reflexes. A test for this, called clonus, involves a rapid push upward on the top of the foot sole, which will result in several reflex vibrations at the ankle. The hallmark sign, though, is high blood pressure in a woman who did not have it before pregnancy. 120
March-April 2019
Normally, a woman’s blood pressure drops with pregnancy. Any pressure over 130/80 during pregnancy is worrisome. Sometimes with preeclampsia, blood pressure will top 200. Preeclampsia can happen in any pregnancy, although doctors have found several factors that make a potential mother more likely to develop the condition. First pregnancies hold the highest risk for developing preeclampsia. Other risk factors include high blood pressure preceding pregnancy, obesity, pregnancy in very young women or those over age 40 and those carrying twins. There tends to be a family history — that is, daughters of women with preeclampsia are more likely to develop it, too. There’s also a slightly increased rate in those of African descent. Those who’ve had preeclampsia with one pregnancy are seven times more likely to develop it again with a later pregnancy. The only cure for preeclampsia is delivery, and if the baby is close enough to term, the obstetrician may recommend early delivery. For mild preeclampsia, strict bedrest and medications to control the elevated blood pressure might control the symptoms long enough for the baby to mature sufficiently for safe delivery. If the doctor recommends
hospitalization, the mother will be placed on a monitor to track the baby’s heartbeat. Even up to six weeks after delivery, the risk for preeclampsia lingers While there’s no way to prevent preeclampsia, it’s important to be aware of the symptoms. The greatest joy of humanity might be pregnancy and a healthy baby. Make sure your pregnancy yields this gift by maintaining a healthy weight and lifestyle and regular prenatal checkups. What's in a home insurance policy? How do I get the best rate? Most standard homeowners’ insurance policies include four essential types of coverage:

STRUCTURE Your homeowners’ policy pays to repair or rebuild your home if it is damaged or destroyed by fire, hurricane, hail, lightning or other disasters listed in your policy. It will not pay for damage caused by excluded perils like flood, earthquake or routine wear and tear. Always purchase a replacement cost policy so you have enough coverage to rebuild your home. PERSONAL BELONGINGS Your furniture, clothes, sports equipment and other personal items are covered if they are stolen or destroyed by fire, hurricane or other insured disasters. The best way to determine if this is enough coverage is to conduct a home inventory. there due to damage from an insured disaster. It covers hotel bills, restaurant meals and other costs over and above your usual living expenses incurred while your home is being rebuilt. Your home itself is a major factor in determining the cost of insurance. Better-built homes that are elevated to the current requirements are easier to insure and safer in a hurricane-prone area. A newer home is less costly to insure, and there are large credits for a home that has been built with additional fortification. The homeowner also is an important variable influencing the cost of coverage – from an actuarial perspective. Statistics reveal that owners who have better credit history and fewer claims on their record are better risks for the insurance company that is making an investment in their home. You may be paying $1,000 for your policy, but the insurance company is promising to pay $100,000 if your home burns. They need assurances that you are a good risk. A homeowner who has a well-maintained property is a better risk because fewer liability exposures will exist. The insurance carrier also is a consideration. There are national, regional and surplus lines carriers. Consumer Reports recently shared a story on the high cost of advertising used by many major carriers, which in the end results in higher cost to you as a consumer. Should you adjust your income tax withholding? Ideally you should break even with the IRS at tax time. You should neither owe the government nor receive a refund. Is breaking even what you typically experience at tax time? In my career, I have come across only one person whose tax liability and tax withholding were the exact same amount. His tax return was simple. He was single, had wages from one employer, took the standard deduction and had no dependents. Most returns, even students’ returns as simple as they are, do not break even. Why would this be? What should you do about it? TYPICAL WAYS PEOPLE WITHHOLD Some people like to receive refunds and actually plan it that way. Basically, they are over-withholding during the year to create this refund at the end of the year. They use this tax refund windfall as a form of savings. Although there is nothing wrong with doing this, they lose the opportunity of having their money working for them during the year. There are better uses of their money, like paying down debt or investing to create additional earnings. Otherwise, overpaying the IRS is giving the government an interest-free use of their money. There are people on the opposite side of the spectrum who underpay the government and always owe at tax time. When their underpayment is too large, the government penalizes them and seeks to collect penalties and interest. This is a costly approach to paying their taxes. So, unless they are using their money where they are getting a larger return than the penalty and interest they will pay, they should at least pay their taxes up to the amount that they can owe the government without incurring any penalties and interest.
124
March-April 2019
Other people use what I call the roulette approach. These people blindly withhold at a single’s rate with zero allowances or one allowance. They hope they are erring on the safe side because the fewer the allowances claimed, the more tax withholding there is. At tax time, these individuals learn their fate. It is a pleasing experience if they are due a refund and not so pleasing if they owe. In either case, this is an inefficient approach. THE W-4 FORM The W-4 form is the government document used by your employer to withhold the proper amount of federal income tax from your paycheck. This form is short but confusing. It is accompanied by worksheets to assist completing the W-4; however, the worksheets are more confusing. Most of us understand dollars and cents, but the W-4 uses allowances that are supposed to equate to dollars and cents. Therein lies the confusion. In lieu of using the worksheet, the IRS has a withholding calculator at irs.gov/withholding. Although I have not actually used it, it does appear to be user friendly. You max out your withholding by claiming single with zero allowances on your W-4. If this is still not enough to satisfy your tax liability, you can request an additional, specific dollar amount to withhold. If your federal income tax withholdings are too much because you have carry-over losses, credits and itemized deductions that lower your tax liability, then you will want to increase your allowances in order to have less income tax withheld. CIRCUMSTANCES FOR A NEW W-4 You can fill out a new W-4 as often as needed, or as often as your company’s human resource department will handle. You should complete a new W-4 when certain circumstances in your life change because these types of changes
If you did not complete a new W-4 since the Tax Cuts and Jobs Act's passage, your withholdings decreased automatically — giving you larger net paychecks. have tax consequences — meaning your income tax will increase or decrease depending on the circumstance. CIRCUMSTANCES FOR A NEW W-4: • Marriage • Divorce • Birth of child • Adoption • Death of spouse or child • Occasional side income • Non-wage income (e.g. interest, dividends, rental income and capital gains) • Non-wage losses (e.g. rental losses and capital losses) • Paying college tuition • Adult children leaving home • Estate or trust income TAX CUTS AND JOBS ACT The revisions to the tax code in the Tax Cuts and Jobs Act lowered the federal income tax rates. This then lowered the income tax withholdings. Therefore, if you did not complete a new W-4 since the act’s passage, your withholdings decreased automatically — giving you larger net paychecks. This gave you the benefit of using your money during the 2018 year instead of waiting for your tax refund this 2019 tax filing season. SUMMARY If you find yourself encountering one of the circumstances, if you are tired of always paying additional taxes at tax time or if you would prefer to have more of your money during the year, then it is time to submit a new W-4. Many variables impact your tax return, and everyone’s tax situation is different. You should talk with your tax advisor to determine what is right for you. Also, do not forget your state tax withholding. Tina Perkins is a CPA at Tina Perkins, CPA, P.A., 4048 Popps Ferry Road, D’Iberville. Reach her at (228) 392-2991.

Leaving a financial
legacy
I
f you are like me when you think or talk about your grandchildren, your words and thoughts express how much you love By Kathy Rogers them and what you are leaving them as a legacy. I have a wonderful legacy of love, faith, family and time spent with my Mamaw. My mother continued it with my children, and I strive to continue it with my grandchildren. The legacy they left was what they deposited into my life; this legacy is one of great value, and it is irreplaceable. There is another type of legacy of love we can leave our grandchildren — a financial legacy. Although many people are purposeful in their legacy of time and love, they fail to recognize how easy it is to leave a financial legacy for their grandchildren. They wrongly believe that because they do not have a lot of money, they will never be able to leave a financial legacy. A financial legacy is about much more than a dollar amount and can be achieved numerous ways. Just as physical and emotional stability are great legacies, financial stability is as well.
126
March-April 2019
Never underestimate the strength of your life example, of demonstrating what life can be when you make wise financial decisions and live within your means. No matter where our grandchildren go or what they do in life, this type of legacy will travel with them. Another way we leave a financial legacy is with our dollars. There are as many opinions for this as there are are bankers, financial advisors and CPAs. Some common options are savings accounts, 529 college savings plans, stocks and Uniform Gift to Minor accounts, just to name a few. However, there is another option to leave a financial legacy that often is overlooked and scorned — the legacy of life insurance. When we talk about life insurance, you may think about your own life insurance — a benefit for your spouse or children in the event of your death. That is important. However, what I am talking about is investing in life insurance for your children. I can hear your indignation now — “I would never want to benefit off the death of my child or grandchild!” I’m with you on that. However, that is not the point of purchasing life insurance on your children or grandchildren. How many people do you know who wish they had life insurance but are not able to purchase it due to health problems? I could give you real-life examples from my own business. There is a great website that has video stories from real people talking about how much having life insurance or the lack of life insurance has meant to their families: https://lifehappens.org/videos. I encourage you to check it out and listen to some of the stories. Life insurance for children is about securing their future insurability, for their own good and the good of their future family. Life insurance is about legacy. What a great way to demonstrate your love by starting something that can turn into a legacy for great grandchildren you may never get to see, hold or love on. What kind of legacy do you want to leave? Kathy Rogers is the VP of Marston Rogers Group and specializes in business transitions and retirement plans. Spring brings flowers – and divorce It seems like every year after the holidays, you read about the latest celebrity filing for By Kathy Brown divorce. This year is no exception, van Zutphen with Jeff Bezos, CEO and founder of Amazon with a reported net worth of $137 billion (according to Bloomberg Billionaires’ Index), announcing an end to his 25year marriage to MacKenzie Bezos. Statistically, divorce filings spike in January after couples make it through the holidays, then they peak in March and August. Of course, it is common sense to seek an attorney’s advice before and during the divorce process to maximize your post-divorce net worth. There are three things, however, that you should do immediately after you read your newly issued divorce decree and either pop the champagne or dry the tears off of the paper:
marital assets, including investments, insurance and retirement benefits. You should not delay, however, in contacting the necessary advisors, agents or brokers to fill out the forms or take the steps necessary to change your beneficiaries. As shown in a 2009 Supreme Court case, your divorce decree will not necessarily prevent your ex-spouse from getting your benefits when you die if you never bother to make the appropriate changes.

3. CHECK YOUR ESTATE PLAN Check your estate plan to see if it should be changed, meaning double check your last will and testament

2. CHECK YOUR HEALTH INSURANCE Hopefully, the divorce decree has addressed who will be responsible for providing insurance for you and the children, but you should check for deadlines and whether forms must be completed for the changes to be effective. or trust. Review the documents to see if changes are needed. If you ignore these legal documents and don’t make necessary changes before your death, it can lead to unintended results. Note that if you do not have an estate plan after your death, your estate will be handled according to the laws of intestacy — which may provide no inheritance for stepchildren. Make sure to review or complete the necessary legal documents so that your wishes will be followed. During and after a divorce, conflict and emotional issues inevitably spring up. So remember, despite the turmoil and your desire to leave it in the past, you should make these changes or it could compound your grief. Many regional carriers and surplus lines companies are available to provide coverages tailored to your specific geographic zone. These companies may be able to combine coverage for multiple perils, such as fire and wind together, instead of having to obtain one of the coverages from a state risk pool. Being insured properly and having a good insurance agent also are key factors. A good insurance agent can assist you with understanding your specific needs and offering you the best value for your dollar. Insurance is a contractual promise to pay in the event of a loss. Be certain you understand the provisions in your policy contract to avoid unpleasant surprises at the time of a claim. No policy covers “everything.” You need to use your insurance for the major losses and fix the small problems yourself. After Spring comes hurricane season, so keep in mind what you can do to protect your home from wind and water damage. Ensure that you have protection for any openings to your home – doors and windows. It’s a good idea to make an annual home inventory; you can just use your cell phone camera and video the items in each room. Your spring checklist should include checking and cleaning gutters. Fill any low areas in your yard to avoid insect invasions. Analyze your roof for any missing or damaged shingles, and repair any problems. Check for leaks in your roof lines. Tree limbs should be cut back at least three feet. Obtain a termite inspection. Have your air conditioner checked. Last but not least, verify that all of your home, wind and flood insurance coverages are adequate and in force. Angelyn Treutel Zeringue is president of SouthGroup Insurance Services. She previously chaired the Agents Council for Technology (ACT) for the national Independent Insurance Agents and Brokers of America (IIABA) and has spearheaded numerous programs fostering the use of technology to enhance and improve the independent agency system.

DELEGATE TO GROW
By Ryan Giles In a startup business or small company, it’s not unusual to wear many hats. In my early days in business, I would work with clients during the day, spend time on the finances at night, then devote as much time to sales and marketing as I could squeeze in. However, you’ll hit the ceiling and never grow beyond a certain point unless you learn to delegate so you can spend time on your highest and best use (HABU). HABU Think about your business today. There’s likely some aspect of it you excel at and love. This is your HABU. In fact, if you can have every employee working in their HABU, there’s no end to what you can achieve. But to spend more time in your HABU, what are you going to give up? When I see someone who regularly says, “I don’t have time to teach someone, so I’ll just do it myself,” I know this person may never get to their HABU. DECIDE You only have as much 132

If you can’t stop or automate the task, it may be time to hire someone. This can be an internal hire or an outsourced person.
time as you have. This means you must give something up to spend more time in your HABU. Begin by making a list of everything you do in your business. I recommend keeping a simple notebook or timesheet for a few weeks to make sure you’ve captured every task that you perform around the office. Once completed, divide this list into tasks you enjoy and excel at versus those you dislike and aren’t good at. The don’t like/not good section of the list is a prime place to start delegating. STOP/AUTOMATE/HIRE Now that you have your list of tasks to delegate, what’s next? First, take a hard look at the list and determine whether any of the tasks can be stopped altogether.
We do many things because “we’ve always done it that way” — even if they aren’t delivering the results we need. I once realized I was spending a substantial amount of time on marketing efforts that yielded zero benefit. These are the things you stop. If you can’t stop the task, can you automate it? It’s 2019. Software tools exist to help us automate a significant number of sales and marketing tasks, inventory control, accounting functions and even operational duties. For a jumpstart on automation, check out www.zapier.com. If you can’t stop or automate the task, it may be time to hire someone. This can be an internal hire or an outsourced person. If you can find someone who can perform the task 70 percent as well as you
can, outsource it. Chances are the new hire will be able to focus on fewer tasks than you and, with the proper training, ultimately perform the task better than you can. TRAINING You’ve decided to hire someone, and you’ve found the perfect person. Don’t pull a “dump and run.” This is where you’re so excited to have help that you dump tasks on the new person without spending time to document and train the person properly. With any new hire, expect to spend a considerable amount of time working with the new person while they learn how to perform the new task. Don’t worry, this investment will pay dividends in the long run. FEEDBACK Your new employee can’t read your mind. Remember to provide regular feedback as your new employee is getting their feet under them. Be open — they just might find a better way to do the job! Need help with your marketing strategy? Duchess Club marks 70 years of helping Ocean Springs children, families By Jennifer Gentile
A
fter seven decades of continually serving the community, The Duchess Club of Ocean Springs still holds to its founders’ vision. “To be a part of something that has withstood various political and financial climates, without losing sight of or determination toward the goal of helping children in Ocean Springs, is inspiring,” says club president Natalia Diaz. “Having been a charitable organization for 70 years makes everyone feel proud to carry the torch that was lit by a completely different generation of caring women and is still going strong.” In 1949, Diaz explains, the club creators wanted to help the hardworking and underprivileged families of Ocean Springs. They focused their efforts on getting Christmas toys for kids who attended school with their own children and whose families couldn’t afford gifts. Today, according to Diaz, “The main purpose of the organization is to provide children and families in need with short-term assistance or to help find adequate services for long term sustainability.” The club partners with counselors from each school within the Ocean Springs School District, identifying children and families in need and providing aid in the form of financial help, clothing or other necessities. Each year, The Duchess Club also awards scholarships for college and summer camp to deserving students. Especially during the holiday season, the organization presents or participates in several charitable campaigns. The club partners with The Bacot McCarty Foundation annually for its Jolly Gala, helping run the silent auction and securing items from donors and sponsors. Each November after Thanksgiving marks the start of the club’s Doll and Toy Drive, which provides Christmas joy for local children and families who are struggling. “We place ‘Angel Trees’ in various locations throughout Ocean Springs, where donors can ‘adopt’ a child and fill each child’s specific wish list,” Diaz says, “and we also receive monetary donations and various toys and gifts for children of all ages from individual donors, businesses and churches.” Coinciding with the drive is the club’s sale of commemorative ornaments, representing beloved Ocean Springs landmarks. Shearwater Pottery created the ornament this past year in celebration of its 90-year anniversary. According to Diaz, the “very successful” Doll and Toy Drive, supported by businesses, school organizations, athletics teams, individuals and others, made Christmas possible for over 200 kids in the Ocean Springs School District this year. For the first time, the club also was involved in the
Ocean Springs Carnival Association’s “Imagine Christmas” parade, with a significant amount of the profits going to the Doll and Toy campaign. “We look forward to this partnership for years to come!” Diaz says. Besides honoring the founders’ legacy, Diaz says, “We hope to serve as an example that philanthropy is something that everyone can do, if even just a little bit.” While all of the original Duchess members were housewives, she says, the club now is a mixture of mothers, executives and professionals who are balancing the demands of work, family and volunteering. “The twenty-five women that represent The Duchess Club come from a variety of backgrounds,” Diaz says, “and it is a profound privilege to be a part of something so impactful right here in our community.”

Rome By Dr. Stephanie Barnes
is where the heart is
I had hoped to go back to Rome last year, but life had other plans. The trip was even on my 2018 vision board! To say that last year was not what I wanted for myself is an understatement. I have learned that while life does not always go as planned, it always goes as it should. When life hands you lemons, it is a great time to make lemonade with vodka! Making the best of things makes life better. I could not go to Rome, so I took an afternoon excursion to the High Museum of Art just down the street. I envisioned myself on a grand adventure, packing up the same backpack I had taken to Europe the year before, and set out like Marco Polo. Instead of exploring museums in London, Rome and Florence, I had a beautiful experience in my own backyard. We are only one adventure away from living our best life. We don’t have to be Dora the Explorer to discover greatness in our lives. All it takes is a little courage, a little imagination and the freedom to create beauty wherever we are. Thanks to the fearless spirit of my Granny Ethel, I have never been afraid to take adventures alone. In a time when few women traveled solo, Granny would drive anywhere. I often was her faithful companion. She taught me if you want to do something, do it — even if you’re the only one. My first big adventure alone was an internship in New York City in the summer of 1994. I was fresh out of Greenville, Mississippi, and exploring the Big Apple all by myself. This was before cell phones and GPS, so I traversed New York with a paper map and the spirit of “let’s see where this street takes me.” If we are not mindful, we can become dependent on the paths made by others and fail to set our own. Robert Frost captured the beauty of the road not taken. We can be so busy traipsing down the path everyone else is on that we choose the monotony of the norm rather than the variety of something new. The well-worn path is comfortable. It’s safe. It’s easy. It leads to the same place every time. It leads to the same place every time. That’s kinda crazy isn’t it? Yes. Insanity is doing the same thing over and over and expecting different results. We are driving ourselves crazy living a life that is not what we want because we are unwilling to be a little adventurous and try something else. Stop living “la vida loca” and start living the life you deserve. Pioneers often are lauded for their discoveries. It would March-April 2019 134
be insane to gloss over the great risk at which these discoveries come. Trying something new is not without the possibility of failure. In addition to my real doctorate, I have earned a Ph.D. in failure. I have taken leaps that did not go as planned — and that has made my life more beautiful. While I was on my Roman holiday in Atlanta, I was struck by the beauty of a marble statue on display. I marveled at the intricately chiseled details in the stone. It was a statue of a woman draped in a shawl. You could see the details of the fabric texture and the beautifully braided designs in her hair. She was as lifelike as a woman sitting for a portrait. The artistry of this statue reminded me that from the hardest of circumstances, beauty can emerge. The artist started with a block of hard stone. He had a vision in his mind. He chiseled the hard stone, stroke by stroke, until the ugly block of hard stone revealed the beauty he saw in his mind. The beauty of your life begins in your mind. Each thought creates a future. If you see your life as hopeless, it will be. If you see any failure as an indictment of your worth, you will be cast in a prison of regret. When you don’t think you can, you will act like you cannot. You will procrastinate in self-doubt. You will be paralyzed in fear. You will cling to the path well worn when you don’t truly believe the path not taken is the course for you. Every action leads to an outcome. This means that you get to choose your outcome — regardless of what life hands you. Rome is where your heart is. Wherever you want to go in life begins with wherever you believe you are. If you believe you’ve been handed a bunch of sour lemons, you will eat sour grapes. If you believe the lemon is the path not taken, you will find sugar and make a nectar that stirs your soul. Perspective is powerful! Ingenuity is like nuclear energy — it will fuel you to forge new paths, take new adventures and create beauty wherever you decide to go. What is the Rome of your life? What is the thing you’ve always wanted to do but did not “get a chance” to do? Your life will not happen by chance; it will happen by decisions you make and risks you take. Get your backpack and get moving!
Making the best of things makes life better.

COAST EPISCOPAL ANNOUNCES NEW MIDDLE SCHOOL, ‘MAKERSPACE’
Significant growth is coming to Coast Episcopal School. In January, officials announced plans to add a middle school (seventh and eighth grades) and the construction of Mississippi Gulf Coast’s first ‘Makerspace.’ “Because I am a product of an Episcopal school, and a parent of two former Episcopal school students, the education that can happen within this umbrella is amazing, and the creativity that takes place within our schools cannot be compared,” says the Rev. Brian Seage. The move to add a middle school, approved with a December board of trustees vote, makes Coast Episcopal a full toddler-through eighth-grade program. Besides the middle school expansion, the school also will be adding a “Makerspace,” a learning environment where theory and practice are intertwined. “The maker movement at Coast Episcopal School is and will be about teaching and learning that is focused on student-centered inquiry,” said Head of School Daren M. Houck. For admissions questions, please contact Admissions Director Ann Betz at (228) 452-9442 or admissions@myces.org.

Words to deeds
Northwood Church offers a day to Serve
With a mix of tools and teamwork, a group of volunteers put their Christian beliefs into practice recently to benefit local schools. On Dec. 15, members of Northwood Church gathered Long Beach Middle School, Stone Middle School and North Gulfport Middle School to put in service hours painting and repairing items that needed some attention. At Long Beach, for instance, service workers repainted the Bearcat paws that lead into the middle school, repaired and painted the fencing around the dumpster area, replaced mulch before working on the landscaping and pressure-washed the exterior. At Stone, service members painted bathroom stalls with inspirational messages, pressure-washed the exterior and repainted the hallways. Gulfport Middle School service members cleaned up along the fence line, tearing out weeds and other brush that had sprung up. Other groups also worked at Rebekah’s House — a nonprofit in Harrison County that serves those without shelter due to loss of a job, injury, disaster, healthcare costs or inability to find affordable housing. And at Gulf Coast Community Ministries, Serve members made repairs inside the building and repainted the exterior. Rob Mims, missions and marketing director at Northwood Church, says the projects were part of roughly 138

five such major initiatives in which Northwood members could participate. Northwood designates certain Saturdays of the year as Serve Days — opportunities to make an impact in the surrounding community and meet the many needs of cities in South Mississippi. All of the projects had a singular purpose, according to Mims: “Showing
people that we love them.” “It teaches us the importance of being the hands and feet of Jesus,” Mims says, “and serving those closest to us.”
FRAME
your destiny When God created the world, his method or mode of operation was simply this: And God said. He used words to speak everything into existence. “And God SAID, ‘Let there be light’ … and there was light.” (Genesis 1:3) “And God SAID, ‘Let the waters under the heavens be gathered together unto one place’ … and it was so.” (Genesis 1:9) “And God SAID, ‘Let the earth bring forth grass … and it was so.” (Genesis 1:11) Have you ever had a project to do and said, “I can’t do this?” God said, “You can do all things.” (Philippians 4:13) Have you ever said, “I’m so afraid?” God said, “I have not given you a spirit of fear.” (2 Timothy 1:7) Have you ever said, “God, I am not smart enough to accomplish this task?” God said, “I will give you wisdom.” (1 Cor. 1:30) This communicates to us that our words are powerful. Words have the power to elevate our thinking and frame our destiny. Our self-talk and the words we speak will determine whether we think positive or negative thoughts. Therefore, this means we have to be intentional with what we say. In Matthew 4:4, God said, “Man shall not live by bread alone, but by every word that comes from the mouth.” Our words have the power to release God’s promises over our circumstances. Even though we may not see our circumstances change right away,
By Robin Killeen
the words we speak have been sent out on a mission to accomplish God’s promises. He watches over it to make sure what we’ve spoken doesn’t come back void. We can’t just dream it, visualize it or sit back and wait for things to happen. It’s our responsibility to speak God’s word over every situation and circumstance, framing our destiny. Since we have established that our words are powerful, let us make it a habit to consciously speak life, watching our words at all times. God intends for us to pull inspiration and use His word as our guideline to a successful life, to frame our destiny. The sum of what we say in life literally frames our destiny, so we must choose our words wisely. Killeen is founder of W.O.W. (Women of Wisdom). W.O.W. meets every second Wednesday of the month at noon at the Knight Nonprofit Center in Gulfport.

FOOD & ENTERTAINMENT
Food, entertainment shine at Satchmo's
By Chris Dearman
The mission of Satchmo's Jazz Café is to become the best choice in dining and live music experiences on the Mississippi Gulf Coast. Based on my recent visit to the elegant venue, replete with Southern charm, I can attest they are making a strong push toward this goal. Satchmo's is located a bit off the beaten path, tucked away in downtown D'Iberville. Housed in a two-story brick building with an impressive mansion-style entrance and warm porch, this hidden gem will keep you coming back once you’ve found it. Featuring a first-class, romantic atmosphere, every seat is carefully placed for diners to enjoy views of the performing jazz and blues artists. It's the perfect place to spend an intimate evening with someone special or celebrate with a gathering of friends. Owners Walter and Lavonne Shah opened Satchmo’s in June of 2017. Vacationing to the area often while working as a pilot and nurse, the couple decided to pursue their dream of opening a jazz café as 140

they neared retirement. Moving from Atlanta to their now permanent home on the Mississippi Gulf Coast, they took the knowledge of what they enjoyed from numerous jazz establishments over the years, along with artwork collected from their travels, and incorporated it into their own venue. “One of the reasons that we wanted to open up something like this down here was after visiting for many years, we knew that there weren’t a lot of adult places to go besides the casinos,” Walter said. “I used to play trumpet when I was younger in school, and Louis Armstrong has always been a great influence on me, along with a lot of other great jazz artists. So when I started coming up with a name, I thought of something that would be applicable to the area, especially being so close to New Orléans.” After doing some research, they reached out to the Louis Armstrong Foundation, and they were granted the rights to use the name for a small fee. Satchmo's Jazz Café was born, and now you can indulge in
steaks, seafood, and one-of-a-kind house specialties cooked to perfection while enjoying a mixture of artists that rotate to provide fantastic live entertainment. Satchmo’s offers a streamlined menu to highlight Southern-influenced options that are sure to please any palate. Appetizers such as fried okra, sweet potato fries served with a cinnamon dipping sauce and macaroni and cheese angles topped with a jalapeño queso sauce are just a few of the tasty starters. On my visit, I started with Satchmo’s garlic Parmesan wings, which were cooked in a light batter with big bursts of flavor. You also can get a barbecue bourbon version as well. You can’t go wrong with any of Satchmo’s four main entrées. Blackened chicken in a white bourbon sauce, pan-seared salmon with mint cranberry rice and a white wine lemon sauce and shrimp and grits served blackened in a creole sauce atop fried green tomatoes are all highly popular. They also feature steak on Thursdays.

It was Satchmo’s mouth-watering signature entrée, the grilled lamb chops with shrimp, that I had the pleasure to try on my visit. The dish is their play on surf and turf, and it was perfectly cooked with a smother of teriyaki then plated over a bed of garlic mashed potatoes and zucchini. The surprisingly inexpensive dish was one of the best I’ve had on the Coast. All the entrées come with your choice of sides like sautéed corn or broccoli, stir-fried cabbage or collard greens. Be sure to save room for dessert, as Satchmo’s offers an
impressive slice of delicious red velvet cake that you will be taking about later. Satchmo's Jazz Café is open for dinner with live entertainment Thursday through Saturday nights starting at 6 p.m., and they are open for Sunday brunch featuring unlimited orange, pineapple, or cranberry mimosas from 11 a.m-3 p.m. Walk-ins are welcome, but they strongly recommend purchasing show tickets in advance for guaranteed seating. Satchmo’s also is available as a private venue for parties, weddings, luncheons and meetings.

Prepare an Easter
By Andrea Yeager
egg-stravaganza
Easter makes for the most egg-cellent holiday. Beyond being colored or dyed, eggs are a protein-packed power food that perform triple, or even quadruple, duty for Easter Sunday. They go from brunch to appetizers, entrees to desserts. The Easter season is a time of rebirth, renewal and newness. Arriving on the heels of Lent, which is a somber, penitent time, Easter is a joyful day. For Christians, it is Resurrection Sunday. For non-believers, it represents the joy of spring. Spring comes with bright, colorful foods from the garden, adding new life and energy to an Easter meal. Pair those veggies with the versatile egg. A sumptuous brunch after sunrise church services makes for a perfect Easter meal, which is a little out of the ordinary for the holiday. Eggs are center stage, from omelets to eggs Benedict — or even huevos rancheros that kick the meal up a notch or two. You can go on the light side as well with some Mediterranean Diet recipes that take eggs to another level. Picnics are perfect for Easter, and eggs are perfect for picnics if kept at the proper temperature. How about hummus-stuffed eggs, colored boiled eggs or avocado-and-egg salad? Be sure to pack plastic eggs to hide for the children. Preschoolers and younger, elementary-age children rarely tire of hunting Easter eggs. If a sit-down Easter meal at home is a tradition, don’t forget the egg. A braided Easter egg bread creates a pretty, edible centerpiece. They are easier than they look, so don’t be afraid. Of course, any Easter meal would not be complete without deviled eggs featuring a variety of fillings. A favorite dessert after a heavy Easter lunch or dinner is a simple egg custard. Skip the pie crust and prepare the 142 inMarch-April custard baking cups. 2019 What a sweet,
light way to end the meal! Here are some recipes to put those eggs to tasty use. Try captain’s eggs neptune for brunch or avocado-egg crostini for an appetizer. Captain’s eggs neptune takes only 30 minutes to prepare. How easy is that?

"SACRED REST" Genre: Non-fiction Author: Saundra Dalton-Smith Publisher: FaithWords Cost: $14.99 “Our very first full day was a day of rest. God didn’t tell us to do all of the work to accomplish it and get it done. He told us to spend time in His presence, rest and understand where the work should originate from.” This quote from author, Dr. Saundra Dalton-Smith sums up what Sacred Rest is all about. It’s in that place with God when we rest that He speaks and moves on our behalf. If you find yourself busy and still unfilled, take time out of your hectic lifestyle and spend some sacred time with your Creator so that you can be recharged for the journey. COAST CARES
Gulf Coast Community Ministries lends helping hand in crisis Driven by the need to show compassion to a hurting community, Gulf Coast Community Ministries works to alleviate some of the burden of poverty. Even today, we are working to help families cope with house fires, evictions, unplanned pregnancies and the day-to-day effects of poverty. Many families today live on the edge; one crisis is all it takes to turn their world upside down. Imagine waking up one day with no shelter and no job. Where would you turn? Gulf Coast Community Ministries can’t solve all of the problems in our community. However, we can lend a helping hand in an hour of crisis. We can be an ongoing support to aid a family through a time of need. We are able to supply food to a hungry family, clothing and supplies to a homeless individual and a compassionate listening ear to those in distress. As you think about this evening’s dinner, will you wonder whether you have food for your family? Will everyone be able to eat and be satisfied? Not only are we here in times of crisis, but many families have ongoing food security needs. We are a consistent provider to their family dinner table. We are more than just a food pantry and homeless outreach. We also have one of the few free

medical clinics on the Coast. We are able to assist uninsured individuals with their ongoing health needs. We have an excellent team of doctors, nurses and others working to improve the health of our community. Through the years, we have helped thousands of individuals through our multi-faceted ministry. In addition to the food pantry, homeless outreach and medical clinic, we are first and foremost a ministry. We offer prayer and spiritual guidance to all who need it. Gulf Coast Community Ministries has been a part of the Gulf Coast since 2003 and will continue to be with the support of our community and local churches. If you would like to know more about Gulf Coast Community Ministries, please contact us through our Facebook page or our website (www.gulfcoastministry. net). If you would be interested in having a speaker for an event, we would be delighted to share our story. Gulf Coast Community Ministries prides itself on ministering at the crossroads of human need and Christian compassion. Natalie Atkins is executive director of Gulf Coast Community Ministries.
