CAREER UPGRADE

Adult students are finding opportunities and success at MGCCC Mississippi Gulf Coast Community College has a unique support system aimed at helping adult learners return to college or begin college classes for the first time. The college provides such services as a full-time veterans’ assistance staff, an intensive and personalized advising program, and learning support in the Learning Resources Center that includes access to faculty members knowledgeable in a wide range of subjects. For students who want to get involved on campus in professional or service organizations, Student Activities coordinators are available and actively seeking participants of all ages. Kathy Necaise of Lumberton is an Accounting and Business Management major at the Perkinston Campus. A widow, she decided to return to school after having medical problems that put her out of work for more than a year. “I decided it was time to revisit the idea of completing a degree, something I had initially put off because of marriage and having a child. I knew the area that I was interested in, which is business and office management and accounting.” Making the decision to return to school after such a long time, Necaise was trepidatious. “Was I even going to be able to pass the classes,” she said. “That was always on my mind.” Now she makes the President’s and Vice President’s list every semester and is considering transferring to a university after graduation in May. She recently won a state award in business through Phi Beta Lambda, a student professional organization. “Gulf Coast and all of the staff at the college have done so much for my confidence,” she said. “I couldn’t have done this without the immense support I have received since day one.” Mike Fix of Vancleave is a military veteran who spent years driving a truck across the country. After a tough divorce, he decided that he needed to make other changes in his life, including his career. He wanted to spend more time with his children, and he already felt a passion for health care. “I learned about life-saving techniques while serving in the Army, and they came in handy during my deployments, especially in Iraq,” he said. “I found I enjoyed it and that I had a knack for it. I didn’t want to be a nurse necessarily, and I ended up choosing to be an X-ray technician.” March 2021 12

Returning to school was not an easy choice. “I worried that I was out of touch with the skills needed to make it in an academic setting,” he said. “Maybe the hardest part about being a student has been balancing my home life and school life.” He said MGCCC’s support services have helped him manage the return. “The counselors and staff in the Financial Aid, Veterans Services and Business Office have helped me a great deal. The Learning Lab is a wonderful resource with instructors who help you make heads or tails of your classwork. My instructors have also been incredibly understanding.” On top of attending classes full time and staying involved with the Campus Activities Board, Fix is also devoted to his seven children, regularly serves up the perfect barbecue and operates a woodworking business. Somehow, he manages to squeeze a part-time job into the mix. “I still struggle with handling everything,” he said. “The great thing is that I know I have a good support system at MGCCC. Dealing with so much is still difficult for sure, and I don’t get much sleep, but in the end, it’s all worth it.” Queena Myles of Pascagoula is a Process Operations Technology student. She received a Siemens Scholarship through the Aspen Institute this year that helps her pay for college. The scholarship is one of many offered through the college that are geared toward diverse populations, including adult learners. “Getting a scholarship award like this for my hard work and dedication to getting the grade means a lot to me, especially as a nontraditional student,” Myles said. “Winning the scholarship has allowed me to continue my education.” She said that returning to college was the best decision she could have made. “I have learned so much, and I look forward to putting the knowledge I have obtained to great use in a new career,” she said. “I thank God each and every day for the opportunity to better myself. It is an absolute honor to be here at MGCCC and in the Process Operations Technology program.”

MARY BOWSER A native of Pass Christian, Mary received a bachelorof-arts degree in music education from Alcorn State University. PEGGY SPRABERY After graduating from Mississippi University for Women, she taught sixth grade in Jackson; and seventh-grade English in Long Beach. She taught English in the day and adult English in the evenings and sponsored the school yearbook and annual. She later opened a uniform business and a second business with her stepmother. When Peggy’s husband retired 20 years ago, she sold her businesses and retired with him to concentrate on being a mom, arts advocate and volunteer.

SHARE AN EXPERIENCE THAT HAS SHAPED YOU. The experience that shaped my life the most was losing my mom in a family car accident at the tender age of 13. The next morning, I “dusted off my bootstraps” when I realized I needed to bounce back to help my dad and three brothers. I learned that what happens to you in life doesn’t count as much as how you react and how high you bounce back. WHAT’S THE MAIN THING THAT MOTIVATES YOU? (My main motivation) is a passion to help and nourish others! If I see a need, I’ll do something about it, hopefully in an anonymous way. Food is my language of love and my joy is in serving and encouraging others. WHY DO YOU THINK OTHER WOMEN LOOK UP TO YOU? I hope that people would appreciate my absolute zest for life and sense of adventure! A favorite saying of mine is “A true elder is a little girl with

I do not know that other women do look up to me, but what I do know is that I try to display a Christian outlook in all that I do — to be honest, treat others like I want to be treated and always display love and compassion to all with whom I come in contact. WHAT’S YOUR ADVICE FOR OTHER WOMEN AND GIRLS WANTING TO MAKE AN IMPACT IN THE WORLD? • Put God first in all that you do. • Set goals and accomplish them. • If at once you don’t succeed, try and try again. • Maintain a humble and selfless spirit. • Accomplish your personal goals, but always remember to give back to your community and make time to serve others.

Team TOOTLE Couple fulfills clients’ new home dreams BY JENNIFER GENTILE

s Kyle and Stephanie Tootle can attest, home is more important than ever. And that has kept the couple, co-owners of Tootle Homes, very busy lately. With real estate inventory low during the pandemic, clients are turning to the couple to design and build their perfect home.

“From our client’s first Pinterest picture to walking in the front door after turning over the keys, we strive to ensure our client’s new home exceeds their expectations,” Kyle says. His foray into home design began in high school. While taking design classes, the aspiring entrepreneur learned how to put his ideas to paper. “I would design houses and present them to my girlfriend, who is now my wife, and she would critique my designs,” Kyle recalls. “While at Mississippi State University pursuing my degree in civil engineering, I would sketch homes on engineering paper when a lecture got uninteresting.”

Those doodles proved to be precursors to his future. The couple founded Tootle Homes in 2015 and started designing and building shortly after. They initially constructed only custom homes but expanded into spec homes in 2018. Tootle Homes is located in Tradition, a master planned community in Harrison County, which the couple chose for their business because it is where they call home. As a design build firm, it puts every aspect of the new home process under one roof. According to Kyle, the business specializes in “’new-old homes’ with classic Southern style and modern conveniences that are architecturally appropriate to the communities in which we build.” “It has been truly amazing to see how the Lord has taken a dream and turned it into a reality,” he adds. “In college, I told Stephanie that ‘I’m going to build things, and she’s going to make things look pretty.’”

CREATING JOYFUL, COMFORTABLE SPACES

Alongside Tootle Homes, Stephanie has launched her own

interior design and event-planning business, Design Social. Through Design Social, she can work with homeowners during construction on finish selections, kitchen and bath designs and more. She’s also developing business relationships beyond Tootle Homes, providing interior design services for residential and small commercial clients. When it comes to color, whites, creams and light gray color palettes have been popular for a while, and Stephanie believes they are here to stay. “The classic, neutral canvas we create during construction enables our homeowners to add their personal style when they move in,” she adds, “although I am not afraid of a little color.” As for design trends, Kyle says outdoor entertaining space and front porches are popular right now. Open floor plans are still sought after, he adds, but people seem to want a little more separation between spaces to define each area of the home. Painted brick homes are trending too, he says, “which fits well within our ‘new-old-house’ Southern style.” While tastes may vary and change, the Tootles don’t deviate from their mission. “We want our clients to be happy in their homes,” Stephanie says, “and we strive to create spaces where they can find joy and comfort.”

FOCUSING ON FAMILY

Through personality tests and studies with their church’s Sunday school life group, the Tootles have found that their strengths and weaknesses are completely opposite — yet they complement each other. Each spouse brings balance to the other’s life, and they encourage one another in ways that help grow their businesses. “Stephanie is one of the few people who tells me exactly what I need to hear versus what I want to hear,” Kyle says. While working with the Tootles, clients are likely to meet Lillie Bell the couple’s maltipoo, who serves as their greeter and housing critic, and Ellie Davis; their infant daughter and Stephanie’s “design assistant.” Each day spent working together brings the couple a lot of laughter. “We literally drive each other crazy with our antics, but we truly believe that we were meant to work together and build something bigger than ourselves,” Stephanie says. “The days when we are planning the interior finish selections for a new project while Ellie Davis plays on the floor of the office are some of our favorite working memories.”

BUILT ON A FIRM FOUNDATION

Despite their dedication to the business, the Tootles make a conscious effort to spend time together as a family without “talking shop.” Their faith is central to their lives, and everything they’ve accomplished personally and professionally, they attribute to God’s love, mercy and grace. “We are built on a firm foundation,” Kyle says, “and make sure we listen to the Lord’s guidance in every step we take in our businesses.” The high school sweethearts view the future with excitement and look forward to serving the community by continuing to provide quality housing. Seeing how excited their clients are to start creating memories in their new homes, Kyle says, makes all the hard work worth it. “When you are doing what you love and what you feel the Lord is leading you to do,” he adds, “your work seems very rewarding.”

DARING to be different Brittany and Andrew Geotes take fresh, modern approach to real estate BY JENNIFER GENTILE

Brittany Geotes got into real estate thinking it would be a temporary job. Fast-forward to 2021, and she is co-owner and broker associate with NextHome Simplicity, the venture she started in 2019 with her husband, Andrew. Before its freshly remodeled Long Beach offices had even opened, the business earned second-place honors in the People’s Choice Awards for real estate companies on the Coast. Today, NextHome Simplicity is quickly growing — with nearly 20 full-time agents and employees. “Our number-one goal when opening this company was to make things better in this industry, and it doesn’t come without hard work,” Brittany says, “but we feel that what we are doing is making a difference.” The word “simplicity” is in the company’s name for a reason, she adds. “We opened to create an easier, simpler way for the local consumer to find a reputable local Realtor,” Brittany says, “and we use a modern approach with cutting-edge technologies to improve and simplify our client’s experience.” NextHome Simplicity only hires full-time real estate professionals and has strict minimum listing standards. Brittany and her husband also own a real estate photography company called UZZI Media, ensuring clients get dozens of high-quality shots along with Matterport 3D virtual tours of their listings. “We like to say it is basically Google Earth inside your home; clients can virtually walk through a home with Matterport,” Brittany says. “They can look out the windows, look at the baseboards, walk into the closets, etc. It’s the next best thing to actually being in the home.”

That capability has proved invaluable during the pandemic, during which the Geotes’ business has flourished as homebuyers took advantage of low interest rates. The emphasis on technology was one of the factors that attracted the couple to the NextHome brand. Andrew, who was a certified real estate appraiser for eight years before becoming a real estate agent, had long wanted to open his own brokerage, having led a successful team of agents at multiple firms as a broker associate. After graduating with honors from the University of Southern Mississippi in 2012, Brittany went back for a business/marketing degree — hoping to improve her odds of getting into a good master’s program for industrial organizational psychology. After taking real estate classes with a friend, she changed direction. “Once Andrew and I found NextHome, he and I both had that ‘aha’ moment; we knew this was the brand we could agree on and finally merge our business together …,” she says. “They have done a great job of marrying technology and the human connection, creating balance between automation, local agent knowledge and guidance.” Now the owners of the largest real estate brokerage in Long Beach, where they have lived for four years, the couple hopes to open a second location in the near future. The biggest challenges, she says, are the limited number of hours in each day and the sheer amount of work required to build and grow a successful business. “Balancing our time and trying not to burn ourselves out is probably one of the top issues discussed in the Geotes household,” Brittany says. “Luckily, we have found some great employees who are helping us slowly but surely turn this business into a well-oiled, smooth-running machine.”

After remodeling her almost 100-year-old home— which was a two-year project — Ginny Milstead Conn turned her sights to landscaping. “There were no trees, so that was the first priority,” says Conn, who won a $1,000 “outstanding renovation” prize from the Ocean Springs Historic Society in 2017. She used that money to buy new trees, she says, “as a way of giving back to the community forever,” and planted oaks, sweet bays and Japanese magnolias. Any plant she picked had to be able to withstand full sun for up to 10 hours per day. She chose white agapanthus, Ligustrum, white mandevilla, Distylium, vintage jade, dianella and white verbena. The white

theme was purposeful, she explains, as her yard is a long way from the street and she thinks the color shows up the best. “I like raised beds, so I brought in huge trucks with 10 loads of soil and fertilizer mixture,” she says of the initial landscaping work. “The yard was planted by myself and one helper.” Conn’s skills have been honored with Ocean Springs Garden Club awards, and she has enjoyed hosting garden enthusiasts on her property. She personally maintains her yard, including mowing nearly an acre of property. “It is very rewarding when my community friends stroll or drive by and they comment on how much they enjoy my efforts,” she says.

CATHERINE LYON CHERNECKY Sauvolle Court, Ocean Springs

Both her mother and maternal grandmother were gardeners, so Catherine Lyon Chernecky supposes it’s in her blood. “I look forward to searching the garden centers for my plants two times a year,” she says. “Then, designing and planting day is a thrill!” What you’ll see growing around Chernecky’s Ocean Springs home largely depends on the season. In the fall, she favors pansies, winter snapdragons, colorful Swiss chard, cyclamen and herbs. In April, she plants vinca, sweet potato vine, sun-tolerant begonias, coleus (particularly electric lime), sunpatiens, lantana and purple fountain grass. After moving to the Coast from Atlanta, Chernecky says she was amazed by the area’s soaring temperatures. “I had to experiment over the first few summers to find plants that can tolerate that intense heat,” she says. “Some of the plants you’ll find in the garden centers actually will not tolerate our summers, so be sure before you purchase or plant to do your research.” Chernecky plans and designs the layout of all the flowers and plants, but professional landscapers from Lawns, Etc. do the installation. The result has earned Chernecky the Yard of the Month award for the neighborhood numerous times, and her yard also has been featured on the Southern Gardening Show with Dr. Gary Bachman. “My husband and I so enjoy driving up to our house and being greeted by all that color!” Chernecky says. “It’s certainly not for others, although we hope our neighbors enjoy it, too; but it really gives us joy!”

Paul Titus of Cretin Townsend Homes attributes the company’s success to one simple fact: “We care.” “We believe that every customer should be able to build an exceptional home, at a great value, while having an awesome experience,” says Titus, sales director. “The reason we have been able to continue to grow is because we have proven over the course of years that we do put our customers first.” Since 1976, the company has been building custom homes throughout southeast Louisiana and southern Mississippi. Over the course of the last year, the business determined that a second office was needed — which will open this month on West Dedeaux Road in Gulfport. Titus says the planning stagefor a new home typically takes 60-90 days before construction begins, which lasts about six months. “We have always embraced and used technology to make the home building process easier and more efficient,” Titus says. When choosing a firm to build your new home, Titus recommends looking for someone who can devote the time and energy to the process that it deserves. When conducting interviews, he suggests asking questions like: • Does the company have enough resources to handle the work they have?

• Do they have people who specialize in all the different aspects of operating a homebuilding company? • Does the company have a way to handle warranty issues in a timely manner? • How long has the company been around, and what is their historical performance? The biggest mistake Titus sees some customers make is not getting a builder involved early on. “Typically, your builder can help guide you through the design, budgeting, finance, and permitting process,” he says. “A builder will have relationships with all these different people who are needed to work together to make your dream come true.” From his experience building his own home, Titus also advises clients to determine everything they want before they start, as trying to decide on details like colors and products while a home is being built can cause unnecessary stress and delays. Potential pitfalls aside, Titus says building your own house has several advantages over buying an existing one — primarily getting a home as unique as you are. Plus, a new build generally will be more energy-efficient and less costly to maintain due to its up-to-date materials and features.

A little over a year ago, I was in the process of scouting out modern homes in south Mississippi for season two of our TV series, “Inside Out with HL Raymond Properties.” A mutual friend and builder Jason Thornhill, who ironically built the home, introduced me to the owner, Tim McNeely. Growing up, Tim McNeely’s family had a summer home in Waveland named the Beehive. Years later, he wanted to create his own home. This name represented people going in and out of it all the time. It had been a dream of Tim’s to create a modern-day Beehive.

Driving up to the house from the beach is amazing. The moment I walked into this modern tree house, I was in love. The views of the magnificent oak trees and the stunning beach combined are unlike anything I have experienced thus far.

How have you put your personal stamp/touch on the house? What are some of your favorite décor items?

We decided to keep the tradition with the name of the home “The Beehive.” We even acquired the large bee painting (created by artist Cindi Guillot). We love it! It’s located in the foyer, where it came be seen from the road at night. What feedback do you get from guests?

Most who enter comment that they have not seen this type of architecture in this area. They mention that it is refreshing to see something new and modern.

he excitement of a home renovation can quickly be diminished by strained budgets and other unexpected circumstances. The good news is that most of the time, these problems can be avoided by planning properly, setting a realistic budget and always padding your budget for unforeseen issues. When I rehab homes in my flipping business, I add at least 10 percent to my budget for any unexpected overages. I call that my “oops budget.” This overage will give you peace of mind, as it does for me when problems arise — and they most certainly will. According to a report from Houzz, an online interior design, landscape design and home improvement platform, almost half of homeowners go over budget when doing a remodel. Here’s an even more alarming statistic: only one in five people come in under budget. One key to a successful renovation is knowing what not to skimp on. It is imperative to decide ahead of time which items you are not willing to spend less on in order to economize, as this goes hand in hand with setting a realistic budget and determining your scope of work. Every homeowner has different priorities, but there are two rooms in your house that carry the most weight, especially if you plan on selling in the future: kitchens and master bathrooms. Also consider how long you’ll likely live in your home and personally enjoy the upgrades to make sure they’re worth the investment of your time and money. If you plan to sell, you don’t want to over-customize or overspend, possibly pricing your home out of proportion to the rest of your neighborhood. That said, your remodeling choices should take future homebuyers into account and how much of your

‘Time to get it done’ Gulfport couple take part in pandemic home-improvement boom BY JENNIFER GENTILE

Calvin and Misty Stevenson had considered adding a structure to their Gulfport property for a while. And like so many who found themselves homebound during the pandemic, the couple tackled the home-improvement project in 2020. “With limited places to go and limited things to do, we figured now would be the time to get it done,” says Misty — a registered nurse and co-owner of Stevenson Elite Renovations. The Stevensons were in good — and abundant — company. Houzz, an online home remodeling platform, reported a 58 percent annual increase in project leads for home professionals as of last June — with outdoor spaces representing the biggest jump in demand. During a threemonth period last year, Porch.com logged 330 million U.S. Google searches for home improvement work — an increase of almost 50 percent from the same period the previous year. As owners of a professional home renovation company, specializing in home repairs, floor installations, remodeling and more, the Stevensons had a distinct advantage in constructing their 600-square-foot addition — a work garage with an office for Calvin. The new structure provides extra space for tool storage and other purposes at the couple’s home in the Northwood Hills subdivision— which they purchased in 2017 and share with their two toy poodles. “Ninety-five percent of the work, we did ourselves,” Misty says. The process, which began in September and took about a month, involved pulling a permit, laying the concrete foundation and lastly building the structure. The Stevensons managed to stay in their $14,000 budget and didn’t run into any unforeseen complications. In fact, Misty notes, “We actually finished sooner than expected.” A project of this size and scope takes a lot of know-how, so Misty advises those who are considering something similar to hire a professional. As usual, she says, she’s very impressed with her husband’s talent and the outcome achieved. “We wanted a modern look that went with the home, and not necessarily a barn style that most people have,” she adds. “We got exactly what we were looking for.”

Another obstacle for many homebuyers is past credit issues or not meeting the credit needed to buy your dream home. There are two programs that offer down payment/closing cost assistance: Smart Solution and MRB7 (Mortgage Revenue Bond). To qualify for Smart Solution, you don’t have to be first-time buyer, but you must have a minimum 640 credit score and a max household income of $95,000. To use MHC programs, you must work with a participating lender. I always recommend taking the program information with you when you meet with your lender so they know you are interested in these programs. They will help you decide which program is best for you. The first thing you need to do is talk with a lender. Your lender will look at your income and a multitude of other things to determine how much house you can afford. To find an MHC participating lender, simply visit www.mshomecorp.com. Before contacting, be sure to check your eligibility with income limits. Buying your home is a big deal, and you want to make sure you will be able to afford it and maintain a mortgage. Now the fun part begins — house shopping! Contact a real estate professional or search on your own for a home that fits within your pre-approved limits and MHC’s purchase-price limits. Your real estate professional will obtain a sales contract that your lender must have before they can reserve assistance with MHC for your loan. Return to your lender, who will review your complete credit history, verify your income and guide you through the rest of the loan process. Your lender will contact MHC for you and be your contact throughout the closing process. Buying a home can be overwhelming, but having the right tools can help it go smoothly. HERE’S HOW TO RECLAIM YOUR KITCHEN FROM CLUTTER: 1) PREPARE FOR IT

Allow at least two full days in a row to finish. Tidying kitchen items thoroughly takes some time; you don’t want to stop midway! And don’t plan to cook. Counters and tabletops are completely taken over during a tidying event. It’s a great time to order in.

2) TIDY BY CATEGORY

Stay focused and avoid overwhelm by gathering and sorting items according to the following categories: • Tools used to prepare food — pots and pans, appliances like blenders and crockpots, utensils like spatulas and whisks, vessels like mixing bowls, etc. • Items used to serve food — dishware, drinkware, cutlery, etc. • Miscellaneous kitchen items — food storage containers, dishtowels, table linens and accessories, cleaning supplies, paper products, etc. • Pantry items — nonperishable foods and supplements • Refrigerator items — after all the rest

Examine each piece and determine if you really enjoy using it. If you have repeats or extras, choose the ones that make you happiest, and donate the rest with a thank you.

4) CHECK PANTRY ITEMS FOR EXPIRATION, THEN DESIRABILITY

Take time to read labels — and use your nose when possible. If you have unwanted nonperishables that are unopened and still safe to consume, consider donating them to a local food pantry.

5) STORE WHAT REMAINS BY CATEGORY Store like items together. Stack or nest items of similar shapes and materials; store vertically whenever possible (such as cooking utensils upright in a canister); and keep your most frequently used items easily accessible. And my favorite tip…

6) AIM FOR CLEAR COUNTERTOPS

I urge you to try it for a week. Find another home in the cupboards or drawers for any items currently parked on these surfaces. Not only are clear countertops much easier to keep clean, they invite us to come in, relax and create something delicious and nutritious for ourselves and those we love.

If you’re like me, you see potential in grandma’s house but aren’t sure how to make it happen financially. Here are some key steps to buying your fixer-upper. First, it’s important to talk with your lender about a homeimprovement loan. This type of loan requires extra time within the contract so you can enlist a licensed contractor to help navigate necessary permits, building codes and cost estimates. Like humans, when you change the layout of the bones, it is a serious matter. Secondly, by providing the proposed renovations to your lender, you are ensuring the appraiser will have the best understanding to value the improvements. Typically, this type of loan has an interestonly payment and then converts to a traditional mortgage loan within a certain time frame. The loan amount would provide up to a certain percentage of the appraisal, hopefully covering the cost of

purchase plus renovations. Finally, know your numbers. If you decide to borrow for any home purchase, it is wise to know your credit standing. Reports from TransUnion, Experian and Equifax are available yearly from www.annualcreditreport.com. Another number to know is your debt-to-income ratio. This is the amount of monthly scheduled debt payments divided by the total amount of monthly income. Also important to consider is the expected value of the asyet-completed appraisal based on the proposed purchase and renovations. By having a thorough discussion with your Realtor about recent sales in the area, you can be mindful of the renovation budget — therefore having a good understanding of the maximum amount the lender may approve. No one goes into homeownership wanting to overpay for their potentially most valuable asset. Remember, every home has potential — and a story. rebirth Yoga studio rebrands with focus on Pilates BY JENNIFER GENTILE

After surviving a pandemic shutdown, Leah Rogers’s business has emerged transformed. Rogers founded her yoga studio in Pass Christian in 2017 and has rebranded the business as Selah Pilates & Wellness — relocating to her hometown of Ocean Springs. The health crisis forced the studio to shut down from March to mid-July, Rogers explains, and it became too difficult to maintain the brick-and-mortar location while competing with free online yoga offerings — so some tough choices became necessary. “COVID forced me to really level up as an owner and an instructor,” Rogers says, “but it also opened up new opportunities. You know what they say: When one door closes, another opens!” In January, the doors officially opened to her new Pilates studio, located at The Inlet Shops and Residences off of Highway 90. The revamped Selah features a different class schedule and flow, high-end Pilates equipment and instructors who are certified and degreed in multiple movement fields. Amid all the changes, mindful movement remains the business’s guiding principle. “Our core philosophy is ‘breathe, align, refine,’ and (we focus) on moving from the breath, aligning properly and refining our movements over time,” Rogers says. “The Pilates method works from the inside out, and true wellness is an inside job.” Selah, the owner adds, is ideal for those who value movement as a way to invest in their wellbeing and want fitness to feel like self-care. Rogers became familiar with mat Pilates as a dancer, and after becoming injured, she was introduced to apparatus equipment as a way to rehabilitate. She is especially excited to offer Selah clients reformer, Cadillac and tower equipment, allowing them to experience an array of styles and reap the associated rewards — including greater strength, flexibility and endurance. “I know firsthand the blessings and benefits of the Pilates method as Joseph Pilates himself intended it,” Rogers says. “The apparatus equipment is part of that, but it is very expensive. I have to balance the growth of my business, having limited space with COVID restrictions, and business

expenses with adding to our apparatus collection to fulfill my studio vision.” Patrons can participate in small group classes or opt for private or semi-private instruction. Services primarily are centered on Pilates apparatus and mat work, but Selah also offers some anatomy-informed yoga and barre classes. Rogers emphasizes that the Founder, Leah Rogers studio’s instructors have trained for years and continue their education regularly to stay current in their knowledge and techniques. “I am always looking to grow and improve as an instructor, and my staff is like that too,” Rogers says. “I know we all plan to keep training and learning to better serve our Selah community.”

ver the past year, I’ve noticed a shift in fashion; it’s gotten very casual. With many of us working from home, we understandably don’t want to wear full work attire when we aren’t going to the office. And that’s fine, because you have an easy, cozy alternative. In case you haven’t noticed, loungewear is here, there and everywhere! I’m not saying you should ditch your jeans — but then again, maybe you should. Loungewear is the ideal solution for everyone who wants to stay stylish while also being super comfy. If you’re just starting to dive into this look, try to find pieces that you love — whether you pick up a neutral set or something in a bold print. The style of a loungewear you choose is very important, too. If you’re like me and prefer a flared hem, I’d highly recommend a wide-leg lounge set. However, others might prefer a relaxed-fit pant, jogger-style pieces or knit shorts. Whatever direction you take this trend, nothing is better than putting on something you don’t have to think about. Not only that — you can dress loungewear up or down. One of my favorite ways to dress it up is to accessorize, making you perfectly styled for those Zoom calls. If you’re going out and about in your loungewear, you can pair it with your favorite set of sneakers. If you’re staying in, fuzzy slippers are the perfect complement to this relaxed style. Loungewear shows personality while being made for comfort. HOW TO PREVENT A

shoulder injury In the travel industry, March kicks off “shoulder season,” a time of year when you can get great deals for off-season travel during the spring. In the healthcare field, however, shoulder season is year-round, as it’s actually the most injured joint of the body. If you’re not careful, even a healthy shoulder can get injured. Overuse and repetitive motion, such as working overhead, reaching and sports activity are the most common ways the shoulder can get injured, but it can get hurt in other ways too — including natural wear and tear over time that comes with age. The good news is you can avoid surgery for shoulder problems by not having an issue in the first place. One way to head off issues is a proper warm up for your workouts, increasing weight gradually. Also, listen to your body. If something persistently hurts, stop the activity, ice it and take over-the-counter nonsteroidal anti-inflammatory drugs (NSAIDs) if approved by your doctor. If possible, avoid repetitive activity. If reaching overhead exacerbates your pain, use a step stool or put frequently used items on the lower shelves. Another way to stay well and avoid injury is to keep your body in good physical shape with exercise and a

healthy diet. At work, use proper posture when lifting. Take a break for a couple minutes every hour to move around and stretch, and if you work at a desk, make sure your workstation is set up properly to not cause discomfort. If you get injured, some ways to speed up the healing process include icing the area three to four times a day for about 20 minutes. If you feel it’s a muscle strain, you may alternate ice and heat, take over-the-counter antiinflammatories if approved by your doctor and/or attend physical therapy if prescribed by your doctor. Finally, do not wear a sling for more than one to two weeks, as it may result in a frozen shoulder — which is a much harder problem to overcome. Colon cancer can

be deadly

— but is largely preventable

arch is Colorectal Cancer Awareness Month. Colorectal cancer is one of the most common cancers in the United States and the second leading cause of cancer death. But more importantly, did you know that colorectal cancer is detectable and largely preventable through screening and lifestyle choices? SCREENING

Sometimes the colon produces an abnormal growth of tissue called a polyp. These can be precancerous and eventually transform into cancer. It is thought to take about 10 years for most polyps to grow into cancer. If appropriate colorectal cancer screening is performed, most of these polyps can be removed before they turn into cancer, effectively preventing the development of colon cancer.

Traditionally, 50 was the recommended age to start colonoscopies because most colon cancers occurred in people over age 50. However, there has been a recent increase in colon cancer in younger individuals, particularly those in their 40s. Consequently, the American Cancer Society has changed its screening guidelines to recommend starting colonoscopies at age 45. It is not entirely clear why the rate of colorectal cancer is increasing in younger individuals, but it may be due to sedentary lifestyle, lack of exercise, obesity and diet.

WEIGHT

Being overweight increases the risk of colorectal cancer (and other cancers and chronic diseases). Having more belly fat or a larger waist circumference also has been linked to colorectal cancer. Weight loss has been shown to reduce colon cancer risk.

PHYSICAL ACTIVITY

Regular moderate physical activity can lower your risk of colon cancer and other diseases as well. Studies have found that people who exercise regularly have a 40-50 percent lower

risk of colon cancer compared to those who do not exercise regularly.

DIET

Research continues to analyze the link between diet and colon cancer. There is overwhelming evidence that diet drives colon cancer risk. In fact, it is estimated that a healthy diet could prevent 70 to 90 percent of colorectal cancers! This would be a diet high in fruits, vegetables and fiber. Fiber, in fact, is incredibly important, and most people do not consume enough. Fiber can be found in fruits, vegetables, nuts, beans and whole grains like brown rice. Red meats (beef, lamb, pork), processed meats (hot dogs, lunch meats, bacon) and processed food increase our risk and should be limited. If you are over the age of 45, and have not had your colon cancer screening, do not wait to talk to your doctor.

In 1973, my grandmother slipped on a loose rug in her hallway and fell. Due to osteoporosis, what would have been a bruise for her a decade earlier resulted in a broken hip. At the time, minimal activity was recommended to allow healing. This resulted in her developing bed sores and pneumonia, and within a month, she passed. Because we see skeletons as dead structures, we may not realize that bone actually lives. Throughout our lives, old bone is absorbed, and new bone is laid down in replacement. As we age, more is removed than formed, resulting in weaker bones that are more susceptible to fractures.

Over time, the weakening can become extreme. One in three women and one in five men over the age of 50 will suffer a broken bone due to osteoporosis. Although all bones can be affected by the disease, the bones of the spine, hip and wrist are most likely to break. One in four women who have a new spine fracture will have another bone fracture within one year. In women over age 45, osteoporosis-related fractures result in more days spent in the hospital than diabetes, heart attacks and breast cancer. Although children usually heal quickly, broken bones in older adults result in long-term issues. Bone fractures reduce quality of life and place physical, emotional and financial strain on patients and their families. and weight control can help sustain bone density. Having adequate calcium in your diet is essential, with 1000 to 1200 milligrams recommended based on age. Supplements may not be the best source, as some studies suggest they may not help preserve bone and might lead to heart disease. Instead, concentrate on calcium-rich foods, such as milk products, leafy green vegetables, beans, nuts, egg yolks and fish, like sardines and tuna. Other bonefriendly nutrients include magnesium and potassium. The body requires vitamin D to absorb calcium and phosphorous from food. Oily fish, red meat, liver, and egg yolks have vitamin D, while other foods have it supplemented, including milk and breakfast cereals. The best source of vitamin D is sunlight. Doctors recommend 10-30 minutes of direct sun exposure several times a week. When doctors find that their patients have low vitamin D levels, they often recommend oral supplements, which unlike calcium supplements are safe and effective. Until the 1990s, female hormones were prescribed to prevent bone loss. However, due to their many side effects they’re no longer considered appropriate therapy. The most widely prescribed osteoporosis medications are called bisphosphonates, such as Fosamax, Boniva, or Reclast. These can be taken orally once weekly or monthly. Some are available for intravenous infusion once every three months or even once yearly. Although these medications will curb osteoporosis and help build bone strength, they won’t cure the disease. There also are bone-building drugs, Forteo, Tymlos and Evenity, which require injections and are reserved for people at very high fracture risk. Aging-induced bone loss occurs in everyone. Regular exercise and proper diet will help limit the development of osteoporosis. Ask your doctor if you need a bone density test. Diagnosis of osteoporosis and initiation of medication may prevent fractures and their complications.

Are you feeling overwhelmed during these challenging times, trying to make some time for you? Consider joining me in meditation. While meditation isn’t a cure-all, it certainly can provide some much-needed peace in your life — especially during this pandemic. Sometimes, that’s all we need to make better choices. “How do I mediate?” you ask. It’s easy, and the most important tools you can bring to your meditation practice are a little patience, some kindness for yourself, a comfortable place to sit and YOU — just as you are.

HOW TO MEDIATE:

1) Take a seat. Find a place to plant yourself that feels calm and quiet. 2) Set a time limit. If you’re just starting, it can help to choose a short time, such as five or 10 minutes. I use the CALM app that has varied times for meditation. 3) Notice your body. You can sit in a chair with your feet on the floor, sit loosely cross-legged or kneel—all are fine. Just make sure you are stable and in a position that you can stay in for a while. 4) Feel your breath. Follow the sensation of your breath as it goes in and out. 5) Notice when your mind has wandered. Inevitably, your attention will leave your breath and wander elsewhere. When you notice that your mind has drifted, simply return your attention to your breath. 6) Be kind to your wandering mind. Don’t judge yourself or obsess over the content of the thoughts in which you find yourself lost. Just come back.

7) Close with kindness. When you’re ready, gently lift your gaze. If your eyes are closed, open them. Take a moment to notice any sounds in the environment. Also notice how your body feels right now, as well as your thoughts and emotions. Welcome back. What happened? How long was it before your mind wandered away from your breath? Did you notice how busy your mind was even without consciously directing it to think about anything in particular? Did you notice yourself getting caught up in thoughts? We often have little narratives running in our minds that we didn’t choose to put there, like, “Why does my boss want to meet with me tomorrow?” or “I should have gone to the gym yesterday.” Maybe your mind was on your bills or the many things you need to accomplish in a given day. We practice mindfulness so we can learn how to recognize when our minds are doing their normal, everyday acrobatics and perhaps take a brief pause to choose what we’d like to focus on. That’s it! That’s the practice. You go away, come back, and try to do it as kindly as possible. In a nutshell, meditation helps us have a much healthier relationship with ourselves and, by extension, with others. Be kind and take time for you in 2021.

SUPERHERO SALUTE Window company employees boost morale at Memorial Hospital BY JENNIFER GENTILE

Superheroes scaling the sides of tall buildings typically only happens in movies. But recently, the likes of Spiderman, Batman and Mr. Incredible were seen rappelling down the main tower of Memorial Hospital at Gulfport. The characters, portrayed by employees from Wallace Window Cleaning, brought muchneeded smiles to the faces of hospital staff and patients alike. The special presentation on Jan. 22 was a show of thanks to Memorial health care heroes and a display of solidarity with pediatric patients in particular — many of whom gathered to catch glimpses of the superheroes. Memorial Hospital Corporate and Community Relations Manager Lauren Clark Santa Cruz calls the event “a welcomed distraction during a continually challenging time.”

“Our Memorial team is very dedicated to our mission of building a healthier community, and outside of work and family, there is not much time for anything else,” she says. “This gave people an opportunity to step away and smile.” According to Santa Cruz, the idea came to fruition when the hospital’s community and corporate relations team spoke to the window cleaning company about the possibility of partnering for such an event, and everyone involved in the conversation got excited. “The employees were energized and purchased their own costumes to rappel in,” she says. “In fact, we were told that employees were debating over who would be which superhero!” The superheroes visited with staff who gathered to watch outside, and they met and took photos with Memorial team members. They also were spotted playing tic-tac-toe on the windows with pediatric patients as they made their way down the building. “It was a breath of fresh air and very uplifting,” Santa Cruz says. “We still have staff talking about it and how unique it was.” Clarice Wallace, president of Wallace Window Cleaning, says the company’s team was delighted to take part in something that brightened people’s day. “To be able to add some humor and fun for the kids having to be in the hospital was really thrilling,” Wallace says, “and I think it brought a lot of joy to the workers as well because they were excited to come out and watch.” The event was such a success that the hospital already is looking ahead to the next one. “We hope to celebrate our healthcare heroes and patients with this experience again next year,” says Santa Cruz.

Chances are that you or someone you know suffers from back pain, which can become more chronic over time. Although back pain is not always an indicator of a more serious disorder of the brain, spine, spinal cord or peripheral nerves, certain signs can signal a need for corrective surgery. Obvious signs of these disorders include headaches, visual changes, confusion, lethargy, upper extremity or lower extremity pain with numbness and tingling, neuropathic pain and lower back pain. Nearly 65 million Americans report a recent episode of back pain to their doctors, leading to decreased productivity and physical limitations. Although men are more likely to incur traumatic spine injury, women typically seek treatment for neuropathic pain, often described as a shooting or burning sensation. When a patient is finding that these symptoms interfere with normal daily activities, surgery is recommended. Since the technology was introduced to Memorial in 2018, neurosurgeons at Memorial Hospital have performed nearly 100 robotic-guidance spine surgeries. The robotic navigation system of the Mazor X platform provides a level of precision that is especially critical in operating around the delicate and intricate regions of the spine. Working with special software, cameras and detailed 3D scanned images, the neurosurgeons plan and verify every aspect of the procedure. The neurosurgeon then guides the robotic arm to position each tool and implant with millimeter accuracy. I have performed more than 90 robotic spine surgeries using the powerful 3D surgical planning software and pre-operative CT scans of the patient. With the Mazor X

HOW I BUILT MY BUSINESS:

When my children (Mary Nelson, 6, and Gates, 3) were born, I worked as a regional human resources and recruiting director for a national restaurant chain. I traveled a lot and worked some weekends and all holidays. The job was stable and paid well, but I wasn’t passionate about it. It was a great job for 10 years, but my priorities had changed. I decided that if I was going to continue to be a working mom, I wanted to be passionate and driven in my career. I also wanted to be able to teach my children the value of hard work while maintaining a nice family life. I taught fitness classes on the side for several years, something I enjoyed that brought in a little extra money, which is always nice. I also realized that after becoming a mother, I really looked forward to workouts. I needed that hour every day to forget about work, meals, kids’ projects, housework and everything else that comes with being a working mom. For those moments, I could focus on myself. I knew that other moms must feel the same, and I wanted to help. In August of 2018, I opened Seaside Fitness. My goal was to provide an environment for clients to get that hour of “me-time” in their day. I wanted to cultivate a unique place where workouts are challenging, effective and creative (no two classes at Seaside Fitness are the same). Our members can completely let go of their daily burdens and stressors. I also wanted Seaside Fitness to have a social aspect and be a place where friendships are made and fostered. Another important element of Seaside Fitness is, of course, my family. My children are staples at the studio. In fact, my daughter recently has taken a huge interest in our 5 a.m. class! She wakes up when she hears my alarm at 4:15 a.m. and begs to come with me. Usually, I let her. Our members know their children are always welcome. New moms are always excited to return to classes, often with their newborn beside them. I love that my children will grow up witnessing so many hard-working, motivated women making time in their busy schedules to take care of themselves. All our trainers are mothers and understand how important that “me-time” can be. It’s not unusual for a trainer to gently rock a fussy baby to sleep in a stroller while leading mom through a

rigorous workout. I love that these children will grow up thinking that working out is a normal and natural part of life. I’m also quite proud of the work ethic being instilled in my children. Get debt-free — or plan for retirement? One of the most debated financial questions of modern times is whether you should prioritize paying off your home mortgage over planning for your retirement. Emotion embraces the dream of a retirement with no debt, great health and doing whatever you want whenever you want. However, for the vast majority of Americans, this will not be their reality. Sound financial wisdom says that before blindly adhering to the mantra of paying off your home mortgage as quickly as possible, you should examine your situation to see if it really makes financial sense for you. Here are some things for you to consider before choosing to put your extra money into paying off your mortgage early instead of setting it aside for retirement.

FLEXIBILITY

If 2020 has taught us anything, it’s that we never know what tomorrow holds. I am not encouraging you to live in fear or paranoia. I am encouraging you to live in wisdom. Consider what your older self might say to you about how the decisions you make today determine your future. INSURANCE COVERAGE Lessons learned from 2020

2020 was a catastrophic year on so many levels. We saw many awful events, including a record number of hurricanes. Many people who were impacted by the storms discovered they didn’t understand their insurance policy or the claims process.

AS WITH ALL DISASTERS, WE CAN TAKE AWAY SOME LESSONS FROM THESE EXPERIENCES:

1. If you are impacted by a hurricane and sustain damage, your insurance provider may respond depending on what caused the damage: wind or flood. Your policy must include these coverages before you can consider making a claim, and you may need separate policies. 2. You are responsible for paying your deductible. Your insurance will only pay to repair damages that exceed your deductible. If you have a high deductible, you should save up the amount of your deductible in case needed or consider a deductible buy-back option to reduce your expense at the time of a loss. 3. Filing a claim impacts your “claims-free record” for five years and will cause your insurance rates to be higher during that time period. Be certain your repair costs will exceed your deductible. 4. Your insurance policy requires you to make immediate temporary repairs to prevent any damage from getting worse. These costs for temporary repairs are eligible to be included in your total claim settlement. 5. Always get a repair estimate to compare to your claim settlement. Most adjusters use a standard program

that is mostly accurate, but it is always good to have a second opinion. You should not have to reveal the amount of your settlement to your contractor. Their estimate should be independent from the estimate your adjuster derives. 6. Report any price gouging or unethical vendors to the attorney general. No one should be taken advantage of during a catastrophe. 7. If your neighbor’s tree falls on your home or fence, or if their trampoline blows into your car, your insurance will be called upon to handle the repairs, unless you can prove your neighbor was negligent. 8. Policies may not cover outbuildings or fences or provide only limited coverage. Be sure you understand your policy and verify that your coverage levels are adequate for your property and contents. 9. Only damage caused by the storm or flood will be considered in your claim settlement. While it would be nice to get a new roof, your settlement will be calculated by the actual area of the roof damaged by the storm. If your roof is over 15 years old, some policies may not cover the replacement cost. 10. The claims process always takes longer than we would like because there are thousands of claims being filed. Six steps to take after an Even a fender-bender can leave you shaken; so, in the excitement of an automobile crash, it is hard to remember what you should do. As a way to document the details while they are still fresh, you should TRAP IT in your memory by taking these steps to record the facts.

T - TAG INFORMATION

Occasionally, a vehicle will try to flee the scene of an accident, so it’s helpful to get the tag information — in addition to the color, make, and model of the vehicle. These days, almost everyone has a cell phone with a built-in camera, so it is easy to identify the vehicle by simply snapping a picture of the license plate and its overall appearance for identification purposes and to show any damage. It often is true that a picture is worth a thousand words.

R - RECORD WITNESS INFORMATION

People at the scene who saw the accident can provide crucial details. You can jot a note on your phone of the names, phone numbers and addresses of anyone who witnessed the accident and, if they agree, even get them to let you record a brief statement of what they saw while it is fresh in their minds. If anyone states conflicting information, do not argue about the incongruent details. However, it is helpful to note where the witnesses were located and whether they had a clear view or any distractions or obstructions.

A - ASSESS YOUR INJURIES AND DAMAGES

Of course, your first thought will be assessing your injuries and damages; but before you refuse medical assistance or an ambulance, keep in mind that adrenaline immediately after an accident may keep you from feeling aches and pains that you will feel later. Make an honest assessment and do not refuse to be checked out by medical personnel unless you are absolutely certain you have not suffered any injuries. Many individuals have left a scene of a serious accident, stating that they were not injured, and later die from internal bleeding or other non-obvious injuries.

P - PHOTOS OF THE SCENE

While you are snapping pictures, remember to take a few of the general accident scene. Details may become important later, such

as where the vehicles came to rest afterward, road conditions, whether there was anything blocking the view of the drivers, whether anyone left skid marks on the road and exactly what type of traffic control devices, such BY KATHY as yield signs or stop signs, were in BROWN VAN ZUTPHEN the area. Having a picture that was taken at the time of the accident can be helpful evidence later in determining the accident’s cause.

I - INSURANCE

Determining the insurance of all parties involved will be important. The police will need to record it, so it is helpful to go ahead and locate the information after the accident. Again, you can jot it down in the notes section of your phone or just take a picture.

T - TELL AUTHORITIES

It is wise to call the police, no matter the extent of the damage. If it is such a minor bump that there is no damage and no injuries, the parties may agree to just move the vehicles. However, if one party determines that they have damage, even minor damage, and the other driver has left, a police officer may consider that party as fleeing the scene. If you have an automobile accident with injuries, contact an attorney. Often, having an attorney to help you talk with insurance adjusters can help, even if you do not want to bring a lawsuit, because you may be entitled to more money than the first offer the insurance company makes. HOOK GULF COAST CUISINE With outstanding cuisine and a cozy atmosphere, Hook Gulf Coast Cuisine is the perfect place to enjoy delightful, fresh Gulf seafood prepared to perfection. Opened nine years ago by Chef Corry Hudson and his wife, Laura, Hook Gulf Coast Cuisine has been building a reputation ever since for quality seafood dishes, as well as chicken, steaks and appetizers. Having worked in restaurants most of his adult life, Chef Corry jumped at the opportunity to open his own restaurant down the street from the Gulf in Pass Christian. “It’s really all I know,” he says. “It’s in my blood. I’ve done everything from washing dishes to busing tables to serving food to being a fry cook — and then deciding to go to culinary school. Opening a restaurant was the next step.” After operating for a couple of years, Corry and Laura decided to start a family, allowing his best friend, Tanya McClellan, to come on board as manager. A year later, she became a fifty-fifty partner when Laura stepped away to raise two children. Previously a teacher, Tanya loves the choice she made to change career paths, finding the perfect home at Hook Gulf Coast Cuisine. “We are real people,” Tanya says. “It’s a fun, family-friendly atmosphere. Our employees provide great service and fabulous food. I mean, they know what they are doing in the kitchen. Having that, and a fantastic staff, makes my job so much easier.” When you visit Hook Gulf Coast Cuisine, you will want to start with an appetizer or two, with choices such as fish tacos, gumbo and the guest-favorite phares fries, which are French fries tossed with truffle oil, parsley and Parmesan cheese. On my visit, I had a sampler of New Orleans-style barbecue shrimp, oysters Rockefeller and the restaurant’s specialty THAI-ger shrimp, which are tossed in a Thai chili sauce with pickled jalapeños. It would be hard to choose which I liked best, as all three provided big bursts with flavor with each bite. Hook also has a nice selection of salads, such as a fried shrimp, Caesar, wedge and the beloved goat cheese croquette

summer salad. Comprised of mixed greens, grilled chicken, pickled red onions, bacon and goat cheese croquette, mandarin oranges and toasted almonds, then finished with a lemon garlic vinaigrette, it is one of the most popular items on the menu. After engaging your palate with an appetizer or salad, it’s time to choose an entrée. Hook’s lunch menu features something for everyone, with a burger, California wrap, fish tacos, unique chicken and tuna sandwiches and oysters Rockefeller or New Orleansstyle shrimp po’boys. The dinner menu offers the popular option of building your own dinner market catch. You choose a protein from the fresh catch, salmon, tuna or soft-shell crab options, then decide how it is prepared; you can choose blackened, fried, grilled or sautéed. Next, you pick a sauce from a selection that includes beurre blanc, crawfish cream, escabeche, a shrimp-and-cream Pass Christian sauce or Rockefeller. All sauces are homemade, and you can’t go wrong. The meal also comes with a house salad, ciabatta bread and a choice from sides such as angel hair pasta bordelaise, risotto, vegetables or potatoes. On my visit, I tried fresh, grilled yellowfin tuna with a fantastic beurre blanc sauce and grilled asparagus. It was meltin-your-mouth goodness. Besides the build-your-own options, Hook has an excellent variety of specialty seafood, pasta and steak dishes. I went with the seafood pasta, which included sautéed shrimp, crab, mushrooms, tomatoes, green onions and a citrus seafood broth served over angel hair pasta bordelaise. It was the perfect combination of texture and flavor. The special for the evening was a honey-garlic glazed salmon over asparagus puree with flash-fried potatoes. I’m not a huge fan of salmon, but this dish definitely will have me coming back. Be sure to save room for one of Hook’s deserts, which are homemade by Chef Corry’s mother-in-law, “Momma” Joan Therrien. Her key lime pie was perfectly made, not too sweet, and the fried apple dumplings with vanilla ice cream were an absolute delight.

Hook Gulf Coast Cuisine is open Tuesday through Saturday from 11 a.m.-2:30 p.m. for lunch, and 5-9 p.m. for dinner and 11 a.m.-2 p.m. for Sunday brunch. A $5 fish taco special is available on Tuesdays, and Wednesdays feature $5 burgers. A full bar offers specialty cocktails and plenty of outdoor seating.

COAST HERITAGE INFORMATION CENTER CELEBRATES, EDUCATES BY JENNIFER GENTILE

Those wanting to explore coastal Mississippi’s rich history and cultural diversity now have a convenient — and comprehensive — place to start. The MS Coast Heritage Information Center, accessed at www.DisabilityConnection.org, is meant to preserve, promote and celebrate the heritage of south Mississippi. Site visitors will find three 25-minute documentaries, 41 mini-films, professional photos, detailed maps, downloadable brochures and over 160 pages of heritage information. The four-year project was made possible by an MS Coast National Heritage Area grant from the state Department of Marine Resources and the National Park Service. “This Heritage Center is designed to educate and encourage the public to be active in exploring the many heritage locations and cultures of our coast,” says Janie O’Keefe, executive director of Disability Connection. “Whether the information is used to plan your travels or just to virtually explore all of the wonderful places the coast has to offer, visitors will learn about the wonderful travel opportunities available and enjoy the beautiful films that highlight our beautiful area and our wonderful people.” The documentaries were produced in partnership with Walt Grayson, host of “Look Around Mississippi” and “Mississippi Roads.” “Gulf Coast Heritage Tours” celebrates local heritage with volumes of information on the Coast’s architecture, museums, history and art. “Celebrate our Waterways” highlights the recreational activities available on local waterways. “Gulf Coast Culture Tours” focuses on the cultural and ethnic heritages of Coast inhabitants. Dozens of short films on the site feature interviews from fifth-generation coast families, according to O’Keefe. For the 20 percent of the population with a disability, including those who are blind, deaf or have mobility impairments, the site helps them plan their travels by identifying any obstacles or accommodations available at local heritage sites they may want to visit. The Heritage Information Center ties into the mission of Disability Connection, which provides services to thousands of people annually who are struggling with physical, mental and financial barriers. “For people who want to begin exploring, the Gulf Coast Heritage Information Center is a wonderful way to help you plan your adventures,” O’Keefe says. “For those who still cannot venture out, they can enjoy a virtual trip by exploring the website.”
