Happy Mother's Day

LEGACY

of LOVE

Judy Alliston, in green

jacket,

with her daughters: Ashleigh, Bridget and Paula

FAMILY-FOCUSED JUDY ALLISTON SETS EXAMPLE OF FAITH, MATERNAL DEVOTION

Often without her realizing it, Judy Alliston is being watched with a mixture of admiration and awe.

As a source of unconditional love and support for her family, the woman affectionately called “Mimi” by her grandchildren is reaping what she has sown. The mother of four, grandmother of 13 and great-grandmother of two serves as a model of maternal strength and grace for multiple generations of her clan.

“Parenting has taught me to rely on God and learn to be flexible,” says the Long Beach resident and active member of Northwood Church, where her son-in-law is the pastor. “Always leave room for mistakes and learn from them. I have poured my life into my children and grandchildren.”

Alliston’s own parents were her biggest role models, setting high standards for her and her siblings. Her mom taught her the basics of being a wife and mother, from making biscuits to cleaning a home.

Alliston passed on those lessons to her daughter, Ashleigh Butterfield, who also credits her “kind and gracious” mom with showing her how to love God through all of life’s ups and downs.

“I remember her taking me through an etiquette book as a young teenager; at the time, I didn’t see the value, but it’s actually come in handy throughout my life,” Butterfield says. “I also remember cleaning our church with her as a child for many years. As much as she likes the pretty things in life, she is also a hard worker and will always pitch in and volunteer.”

PUTTING FAMILY FIRST

Alliston’s excitement and zeal for life, as well as her commitment to God and her church, fill her daughter, Paula Alliston Rainey, with pride. The example her mother set of prioritizing family has left a powerful impression on her children and grandchildren alike.

“She has inspired me as a parent by always being there when I need her no matter what and always having my back,” Rainey says. “I am the same with my sons.”

Butterfield calls her mom her “biggest cheerleader” — someone who encourages her to step out in faith and “do the hard things.” The title also applies literally, as loved ones can count on Alliston to be present for moments in their lives large and small.

“I have vast memories of raising my children and having influence with my grandchildren,” Alliston says. “I have attended the majority of their school events. I have sat numerous times in the rain watching them play football (and compete in) track meets. Those are very exciting times for me.”

Those moments are equally meaningful to Judy's granddaughter, Emma Butterfield, who recognizes them as her grandmother's love in action.

“Mimi always comes to each event that her grandkids have and cheers them on,” Butterfield says. “She never fails to make me feel loved and cared for.”

MGCCC’S PROMISE:

College offers unparalleled support for military personnel, veterans, and their families

Mississippi Gulf Coast Community College stands as an educational champion for military personnel, veterans, and their families, offering a nurturing environment where dreams of education and career advancement can flourish. Atika Byrd, a military spouse, and U.S. Navy veteran Paul Blackman are shining examples of individuals whose lives have been positively impacted by MGCCC’s unwavering commitment to service members and their families.

Atika Byrd’s story

Atika’s journey with MGCCC began amidst the challenges of the COVID-19 pandemic, as she embraced a new life in Mississippi when her and her family left Indonesa to move here. Motivated to continue her education and with the encouragement of her husband, she turned to MGCCC for its outstanding reputation and affordability. Pursuing an Associate Degree in Nursing, Atika found herself in a supportive community that recognized her as part of the military family. MGCCC’s recognition as the No. 1 Military Friendly School and No. 1 Military Friendly Spouse School by G.I. Jobs underscored the institution’s dedication to serving those who have served their country.

Navigating the complexities of enrollment and tuition was made seamless by MGCCC’s ever-helpful student services and VA benefits office, ensuring Atika received the assistance she needed to pursue her academic goals. Several nursing scholarships helped alleviate the financial burdens, empowering her to focus on her studies. Beyond financial aid, Atika found support in a community of educators whose dedication went beyond the confines of the classroom, offering aid and encouragement where needed.

With graduation on the horizon, Atika’s dreams have soared higher. Embracing opportunities for personal and professional growth, she took an opportunity as a nurse intern in the ICU department at Memorial Hospital in Gulfport that she feels will lead to a permanent job after graduation.

“I cannot say enough about the excellent all-around education I have received at MGCCC,” Atika said. “From the VA benefits office to my instructors and club advisors, I have received help and guidance every step of the way. I appreciate all MGCCC has done for me.”

Paul Blackman’s story

Similarly, U.S. Navy veteran Paul Blackman found himself drawn to MGCCC’s exceptional support for veterans as he contemplated a career change. Utilizing the G.I. Bill, Paul navigated the enrollment process with ease. Paul began his educational journey at MGCCC last year, pursuing the first leg of his journey toward a law degree.

Attending classes at the Harrison County Campus in Gulfport, Paul immediately felt at home, forming connections with instructors like Brian Carriere, whose expertise in history and political science ignited Paul’s passion for politics. MGCCC’s consistent recognition as a top institution in Military Friendly and Military Spouse Friendly lists underscores its unwavering dedication to providing exceptional educational opportunities for militaryaffiliated students.

“I knew I’d made the right choice for schools when I got started in my first classes at the college,” he said. “The service in the VA office was excellent, and they helped me navigate the details like which boxes to check and where my signature was needed to get into college. They made the whole process very easy for me.”

Atika and Paul’s stories epitomize the positive impact of MGCCC’s commitment to serving military personnel, veterans, and their families. As a strong proponent of educational opportunity and student success, MGCCC continues to empower individuals like Atika and Paul to pursue their dreams and build brighter futures

‘THE PUREST SOUL’

While Emily Mauffray has heard plenty of words of wisdom from her grandmother, she says Alliston’s best advice wasn’t conveyed with words. Rather, it was the strength and resilience Alliston showed after losing her husband that most impressed and inspired her.

“My Mimi is the purest soul I have ever been blessed to know,” Mauffray says. “I always look up to her and her faith!”

Granddaughter Julia Starkey describes Alliston as “the humblest, most loving, supportive, funny redhead you’ve ever met!”

“Me and my Mimi love to do movie nights! I’ll admit, it has been too long since we have had one,” Starkey adds. “We have that special relationship where no matter how long you go without seeing each other, when you’re together, it’s like no time has passed.”

UNBREAKABLE BONDS

As Mother’s Day approaches, Alliston feels fortunate to have daughters with whom she is close and whom she describes as “women of integrity.” Their quality time together includes activities like camping, beach strolling and shopping.

One of her standout memories is walking 20 miles alongside two of her children for the MammothMarch in Memphis, Tennessee. Every year for her birthday, she looks forward to traveling for Fairhope with her daughters for an annual shopping trip.

“My daughters are older, and we are best friends,” Alliston says. “We love to hang out with each other.”

While her Mother’s Day plans aren’t definite, Alliston knows she will be celebrating with family. The devoted matriarch understands that her greatest legacy lies not in material possessions or worldly success, but in the

COLLECTOR The adventure

From drag racing to cage diving, Brittany Wilem Kahler lives life at full throttle

For a young girl fascinated by pirates, there are few better places to spend your childhood summers than the beaches and harbors of the Bahamas.

When Gulfport native Brittany Wilem Kahler wasn’t snorkeling, fishing or swimming, she was reading everything she could find about swashbuckling seafarers. One day, a lady who worked in a marina store handed her a weathered, stained piece of paper, which turned out to be a map. Kahler and her dad, Frank Wilem, set out on a boat to see where it led.

“The adventure would end with a box buried on the beach that had different toys I was interested in at the time or local currency,” she recalls. “I had no idea that my dad was the one behind the idea, but I had the best time ever on those treasure hunts.”

Now the CEO of Bloxx Building, Kahler has lost none of her penchant for daring deeds and exciting exploits. If anything, her boldness and appetite for adventure have grown. From drag racing and scuba diving to ziplining and cage diving with sharks, Kahler’s fearless approach to life has yielded a treasure trove of rich experiences.

“Being adventurous and being an entrepreneur share the same qualifications of needing to be willing to take risks,” she says. “There’s no right or wrong way to do either one, but you have to be willing to invoke that nervous feeling of taking on the challenge.”

NO BAIT, NO FISH

During those idyllic Bahamian summers, Kahler developed some character traits that would serve her well: patience, perseverance and self-sufficiency. Give someone a

Photography by Brandi Stage Portraiture Hair and makeup by Brooke Soto, Electric Lady Hair Studio

fish, so the saying goes, and she eats for a day; but teach her to fish, and she eats for a lifetime. Kahler quickly found that to entice a bite, she must be willing to bait her hook with a slimy squid.

“I grew up learning the lesson of, ‘Those who are willing to work for it will be rewarded’; that applied to several aspects of my life, from the outdoors to business,” Kahler recalls. “From a young age, I was taught that I needed to learn how to do things for myself and not be dependent on others to make things happen.”

Soon, she was independent and confident enough to start her first business: catching bait for the charter boat captains. Her employers typically rewarded her with hotdogs and popsicles rather than money.

“However, I earned my first-ever dollar on those docks in the Bahamas,” she recalls. “I still have that Bahamian dollar to this day, thanks to my dad keeping and framing it for me.”

Her dad also joined her on “daddydaughter dive trips” once Kahler became certified at age 10, which took them to Honduras, Belize, Mexico, Curacao, the

Florida Keys and several other spots known for their underwater beauty. The pair went on to co-host a popular show together, too, called “Find Your Outdoors,” which aired to 20 million households weekly. During the filming of one memorable episode, Kahler went diving in the shark tank at the Florida Aquarium.

‘GO FOR IT HEADFIRST’

Now a wife to Stephen Kahler and a mother to 6-month-old Addilyn, Kahler

plans to teach her daughter the same thing she learned at an early age: You can achieve anything with the right mindset.

“Anything that you’ve never done before is scary,” she says, “but boy, is it worth it when you’ve done it and can tell the story about it.”

For instance, she was terrified to jump out of a perfectly good plane while attached to another person and a parachute — but she wouldn’t trade the rush of skydiving for anything. She’s also been nervous every time she’s climbed into a racecar or strapped on a scuba tank, knowing that anything can happen.

“But if I had never learned to push through those fears and nerves,” Kahler reasons, “I would’ve never accomplished a fraction of the things I can now look back on and tell the stories about.”

Some of those accomplishments include earning a black belt in taekwondo and breaking three world fishing records. There’s also the large dragster she and her husband, Stephen, bought and competed with soon after getting married, which they would

regularly run at 180-plus miles per hour.

“So, for any woman who wants to live an adventurous life, I say go for it headfirst!” Kahler says. “Don’t let the moment pass you by since the regrets aren’t worth it, but the feelings of accomplishment and fun spent doing those things by yourself or with loved ones are!”

PURSUING THE RUSH

Wanderlust has led Kahler to go ziplining and white-water rafting in Costa Rica, hunting in different parts of the world and cage diving with great whites in Africa — but there’s still no place like home. One of her favorite pastimes is gliding through the Mississippi Sound on a calm, sunny day, herself or her husband at the helm while they sing along to music and their dogs enjoy the wind in their fur.

“So, for any woman who wants to live an adventurous life, I say go for it headfirst! Don’t let the moment pass you by...”
BRITTANY WILEM KAHLER

Once Addilyn gets a little older, her parents would love to get her certified to dive, and perhaps take her to Africa to witness animal migration from a hot-air balloon. Flyfishing in Alaska, seeing the Northern Lights in Iceland and exploring more of Montana also rank high on their list.

Whatever adventure Kahler undertakes, her motivation is always the same.

“It’s the wind in your hair, the launch of the racecar from the starting line, the saltwater spraying as the boat moves effortlessly, the first jump off the dive boat in the morning … and that feeling of being able to accomplish whatever you truly set your mind to do,” she says. “Those are just feelings that I can’t fully describe but bring a smile to my face and make my heart beat a little faster every time I think about them.”

If you want a less rugged experience, this area has no shortage of RV and camper parks to choose from that offer many of the comforts of home.

WOMEN Adventure of MEET MORE WOMEN living life to the

fullest

The Coast is a magnet and a playground for adventure lovers. From sailing to hog hunting, these local ladies enjoy some extraordinary pastimes:

PIPER BARNEY

Coming of age on a self-sufficient farm gave Piper Barney a strong connection to nature, as well as an appetite for adventure.

“I would lead my brother and cousins on adventures before lunch, walking stick in hand, day pack hanging down my back filled with a notebook, a faded sharpie I wasn’t allowed to have and some broken binoculars,” the Poplarville native recalls. “It was no surprise to anyone in my life when I began traveling after college.”

Finally able to afford adventures farther afield, Barney saved her vacation days and paychecks to take small trips every 90 days to a mountain, forest or beach. As she said “yes” to every invitation and opportunity that arose, she became more and more encouraged with each new experience.

Before Barney knew it, she was hiking 14 miles on a mountain trail straddling the Continental Divide in the Mount Zirkel Wilderness and having to emergency land in someone’s backyard while skydiving in Cleveland, Ohio.

Even more memorable was her 30th birthday, which she rang in with a dozen friends in a treehouse village deep in the jungle-covered mountains

of Playa El Valle, Dominican Republic.

“On my birthday I danced around a fire the locals were hesitant to make so large. The house musician carried a guitar around him and provided background music for the occasion,” she says. “The locals, along with my boyfriend at the time (now husband), created beats and serenaded birthday songs to me late into the night as we all sat next to the rushing waterfall.”

The unconventional celebrations continued with her wedding, for which Barney flew in on a World War II aircraft before exchanging vows on the runway. She and her husband once built and lived in a tiny house together after Barney sold her possessions and spent seven weeks learning carpentry and plumbing.

Her words of wisdom: “Do all the things, without needing a reason to; wanting to is a good enough reason.” Someday, she hopes to secure a permit and hike the Havasupai Indian Reservation to Havasu Falls and experience the great monarch butterfly migration in central Mexico.

“Adventures in nature fill my soul with a nostalgic playfulness …” Barney says. “Like being a child fearless on that back road, exploring shows me that I have the entire world in front of me.”

PATTI JANE GOLDEN

For nearly a half-century, Patti Jane Golden has sought adventure on the high seas.

The Biloxi native, who now lives in D’Iberville, started her sailing career as young adult, volunteering to crew on other people’s boats. Fast forward to 2021, and she crossed the Atlantic Ocean on a 46-foot vessel with her husband and four other people.

“We followed Columbus’ route from Gran Canaria to Cape Verde and ended in Grenada,” Golden says. “Prior to that experience, I logged over 10,000 miles across the Gulf Coast and Gulf of Mexico, in the Caribbean, in the Mediterranean, in the Adriatic Sea and along U.S. coastlines.”

Her experience earned her membership in the global Ocean Cruising Club, and Golden also is active in the National Women’s Sailing Association, which will be meeting for the first time in New Orleans on June 8. Her insights have been deemed so valuable that Seaworthy Publications, known for its waterway guides, recently published “A Woman’s Guide to

NICOLETTE MURPHY

Whether she’s boating, fishing, crabbing or scuba diving, Nicolette Murphy loves being on and in the water. But the Bay St. Louis native is equally adventurous on land – especially when it comes to hunting.

She started by going after small game like doves and quails, and then about 13 years ago, she took up hog hunting — shooting her first one when she was with her uncle.

“Once he saw how much I loved it, he sent me to hunt with the Wounded Warrior in Action Foundation …,” Murphy says. “Now I take (the dogs) out every year for the first week of November for Veterans Day.”

While hog hunting is her “favorite game of cat and mouse,” and she’s also fond of alligator hunting, Murphy is most enthralled with scuba diving these days, which lets her explore the open ocean. Whatever activity she’s undertaking, bonding with family and friends

the World of Sailing” — in which Golden recounts her unique experiences and adventures.

In addition to sailing for the pure pleasure of it, the seasoned sailor also has crewed on races, both local and regional. She has owned many sailboats over the years, the most recent being the Gypsy Lady — a classic Hinckley Bermuda 40 vessel that she and her husband often charter for enjoyment.

Throughout her almost 50 years on the water, Golden has noticed that women tend to love sailing most when the engines are stopped.

“The quiet, along with the lapping of water as the boat moves through the water under large white sails, recharges them in a way only sailing can do,” she says.

“It is an experience that accounts for the large growth in women sailors over the last decade. My goal is to encourage local women to see the Gulf Coast as the optimum sailing experience — a place which makes it safe and accessible to everyone.”

in the great outdoors is what feeds Murphy’s soul.

“I enjoy the tactics and strategies of hunting and fishing,” she says. “I love the smell of a big boar barbecue, saltwater, firewood and the warmth of the sun on my skin, but also the challenge of staying warm during the winter.”

Although her track record of daring exploits is extensive, Murphy still has several items on her bucket list: noodling for catfish, skydiving, frogging with her hands, fishing in Alaska, crawfishing and scalloping. She urges other women to follow their own adventurous hearts, reminding them that safety is key and there’s no such thing as being overly prepared. Make sure to check the law, she advises, and always pack a sharp knife and a first aid kit — “you’re going to need both.”

“Knowledge is power — listen and learn,” Murphy says. “Don’t be intimidated by the boys; show ‘em how it’s done.”

No-sweat tips to keep your home cool, comfortable this summer

Summertime on the Coast is a vibrant season, full of life and warmth. But with the sun shining bright and the temperatures soaring, keeping your home cool and comfortable becomes a priority. Here are some innovative and stylish ways to incorporate cool designs to not only enhance your home’s aesthetic appeal, but also ensure it remains a refreshing retreat from the heat.

WINDOW TREATMENTS

Blending style and functionality, window treatments are not just decorative elements; they play a crucial role in controlling the amount of sunlight entering your home — thus affecting temperature and comfort. Window treatments can significantly reduce indoor temperatures, making your space more energy-efficient and comfortable during the sweltering summer months.

Here are some stylish yet practical options:

• Solar shades: This is a modern solution that filters out UV rays while maintaining your exterior view. Available in various opacities, they allow you to control the light intensity and protect your furniture from sun damage.

• Plantation shutters: Ideal for coastal homes, plantation shutters create a timeless look. Their adjustable louvers provide excellent ventilation and light control, making them perfect for the Coast climate.

• Light-colored curtains: Opt for curtains in light shades and breathable fabrics. They reflect sunlight and heat, keeping rooms cooler. Consider materials like linen or cotton for a breezy, coastal vibe.

• Roman shades or roller shades: These types of window treatments allow for natural light to filter in while still providing some protection from the sun’s harsh rays. Additionally, consider using sheer curtains or drapes to add a touch of elegance to your space while still providing some sun protection.

• Sun block filters: Invisible shield sun block filters, or window films, are an excellent addition to any home

to combat the intense Gulf Coast sun. These films are applied directly to your windows and offer numerous benefits,

NATURAL ELEMENTS

Consider adding plants, such as succulents or ferns, to your space to help purify the air and add a touch of greenery. Additionally, use natural materials such as wood, bamboo or wicker in your furniture and decor to keep the atmosphere light and airy.

including heat reduction, UV protection and glare reduction.

• These filters can be applied to windows, doors or even entire walls to block out the sun’s rays and keep your space feeling cool and comfortable. You can choose from a variety of sun block filters, including fabric roller shades, cellular shades and solar screens. Each of these options provides different levels of sun protection, so it’s important to choose the one that best fits your needs and budget.

LIGHTING

During the summer months, it’s important to use lighting that not only provides ambiance, but also helps to keep your space cool. Consider using LED lightbulbs, which are energy-efficient and produce less heat than traditional incandescent bulbs. Additionally, incorporate task lighting into your design plan, such as under-cabinet lighting in the kitchen or bathroom, to help illuminate specific areas without creating a hot, stuffy atmosphere.

COLOR SCHEME

Opt for light, airy colors such as whites, creams, and pastels to create a bright and airy feel. Avoid dark, heavy colors like blacks, navy blues and reds, which can absorb heat.

When integrating these cool design elements, consider the following tips:

• Evaluate which rooms receive the most sunlight and prioritize them for window treatments and sun block filters.

• Opt for a light and airy color palette throughout your home. Light colors reflect heat, contributing to a cooler interior atmosphere.

• Enhance natural ventilation by strategically placing fans and ensuring your window treatments allow for airflow.

• Incorporate various textures to add depth and interest. Natural materials like jute or sisal rugs can complement your cool design theme while adding warmth.

Adapting your interior design for the summertime is crucial in our coastal climate, where the season’s beauty brings a generous dose of warmth. Embrace the summer with interior design that’s as cool as it is beautiful.

Let’s hear it for

mom!

“I’m thankful to be a mother because I get to experience a love like no other. Despite how crazy and chaotic motherhood can be, it is the most beautiful and worthwhile journey I’ve ever been on! My biggest accomplishment by far has been bringing my baby boy into this world.”

“Motherhood is the most rewarding hat to wear. It has its challenges, but it’s the greatest blessing given to me.”

On May 12, we recognize that not all heroes wear capes. Many of them answer to “Mom,” and their amazingness isn’t always honored as it should be. Mother’s Day is the perfect opportunity to celebrate motherhood and the special bond between moms and their children. In that spirit, we asked you to share some of your favorite mom-centric photos, and we were deeply touched by all the sweet snapshots. Here are some of our favorites:

What’s that

plant?

Technology makes it easy to tell

With the warmer weather and an abundance of flowers blooming, most of us are enjoying getting outside to work in our gardens, stroll the neighborhood or hike in one of the many parks along the Coast. It’s not unusual to spot an unfamiliar plant growing along the trail or popping up unannounced in the flower bed.

YOUR MAY GARDENING CHECKLIST:

❑ Prune spring flowering trees and shrubs after they finish flowering. If you wait until summer, you may remove next spring’s flowers.

❑ Mow your lawn to the proper height based on grass variety.

❑ Brown patch disease may be active this time of year. Look for brown circular or irregular areas with a dark purplish ring on the outer edge. The grass blades in these areas will easily pull out of the sheath. Spray with fungicide labeled to treat this disease.

❑ Continue to deadhead spent blooms on annuals and roses.

❑ Harvest crops daily, and continue planting warm weather seeds and transplants to extend harvest. Shield transplants until they recover from transplant shock.

❑ Roses require at least 3 inches of water a week in the hot summer.

❑ Daylilies will be at their peak this month. Check out any daylily shows for new varieties for sale.

❑ Be sure to provide adequate moisture to tomato plants as they set fruit; this helps avoid blossomend rot.

Many times, I have my cellphone with me. With new technology, it’s quite easy to use our mobile phones to identify the flower or plant. Is it a native, an invasive species or an exotic specimen planted by a passing bird?

There are many mobile apps for plant identification; most are excellent, and some are free platforms that reward us with almost instantaneous results. If you have an iPhone, here’s a simple process to use if you notice a new plant you want to identify:

Take a photo: Capture a photo of the plant using your iPhone camera.

View the photo: Find the image you just took of the plant or any saved plant photo.

Access visual lookup: Swipe up on the image, or alternatively, tap the encircled “i” icon in the toolbar.

Tap “look up”: This will trigger visual lookup, which will provide information about the plant.

Visual lookup works well for common plants or those with limited varieties. It can identify various objects, including landmarks, animals, and more. Remember that while it’s handy, it’s not a substitute for professional advice, especially when it comes to edible plants or berries.

A few platforms you might like to try are:

• FlowerChecker

• LeafSnap Premium by Appixi

• PlantID by Control

• PlantNet: This platform was named the top overall pick due to its level of accuracy, which made identifying test plants a breeze.

• PlantSnap Pro: PlantSnap can now recognize 90% of all known species of plants and trees.

To the parent at the award ceremony

Spring is a-springing — bringing with it all the joys of beautiful weather and blooming flowers that beckon you outside (unless you have a pollen allergy, and then maybe don’t). It’s a time of rebirth, a truly magical season. But for moms, spring also brings chaos: spring sports, end-of-the-year parties to plan, awards ceremonies to attend and graduations to accept with bittersweet joy and pride.

As the school year ends, I always find myself a bit reflective. Where did we get it right this year? Where could we have done better? How did these kids get so much older so suddenly? And there is no place that this reflection tears through my heart more than end-of-the-year awards ceremonies.

Ah, the awards ceremonies. They’re lovely if your child is showered with accolades, but somewhat harrowing for those of us who might not see our child walk across that stage. So please accept this as my letter to you, the anxious parent in the audience.

• To the parent of the child who accumulates awards, congratulations! We know those scholars didn’t get there alone. We know you stayed up late practicing spelling words or relearning algebra. We know you sacrificed sleep and sanity for this moment. We see you, and we celebrate you!

• To the parent of the perfectionist child who got his or her first B and must accept the A-B honor-roll certificate: Take a deep breath. Rough seas make great sailors, and Bs make well-adjusted kids. If you’re like me, and your child couldn’t care less about his first B while your own perfectionist heart is breaking, Bs also can make humbler parents. Humble parents are better parents.

“learning-things-the-hard-way” years. Growth is happening even if it’s hard

To the parent of the child whose future feels uncertain, you’re not alone. Lots of us are out here trying to determine whether our child has a learning disability and what strategies will work to help him or her. Your child is not broken, and you are not failing.

The world is not full of cookie-cutter people. It’s full of unique, interesting individuals who have myriad strengths and purposes. As you dream of straight As and citizenship awards (or not), know that you are this child’s parent for a reason. You are his or her cheerleader and see every precious quirk that makes this child special. We see you, and we

celebrate your bravery, courage and commitment. If we could pass out parent awards, many would be coming to you.

• To the parent of the child who doesn’t make it on stage, please know that this is not a reflection on who you are. Maybe life handed you so many lemons that you were swimming in lemonade instead of sipping it while studying vocabulary words. Sometimes when we are in survival mode, we must be proud of making it through another year. Congratulations on making it!

Maybe your little artist was more interested in drawing detailed whales than circling the right answers on her multiplechoice test (or was that just mine?). Maybe no matter how many times you begged, pleaded and bribed your teen to write down his homework in a planner, he instead chose to relinquish all obligations in favor of important things like mastering the “Free Bird” guitar solo (or was that just mine, too?).

Kids have off years; they are not robots — just little people trying to figure it out. Don’t be so hard on yourself for the

As a mom of four, I’ve been all these parents at one time or another. Most likely, so have you. Hold your heads high this year, moms. No one knows your kids quite like you. Kids didn’t get to walk the stage this year? Make your own awards to hand out at dinner: Best at cleaning up the playroom if promised an ice cream sandwich. Best at delivering a joke flawlessly. Best at eating an entire bag of chips without leaving any evidence. Best at creating smiles and joy. Best at reminding us to bless the food. Our kids shine in a million ways that have nothing to do with their report cards. Let’s celebrate those, and let’s celebrate you, mom, for everything you do to make it possible. Here’s to another year survived. Now let’s get outside and smell the flowers!

CASA of of South Mississippi:

GIVING A VOICE TO THOSE WHO NEED IT MOST

At CASA of South Mississippi, compassionate community members have volunteered and stepped forward to advocate for the region’s most vulnerable children. CASA, or Court Appointed Special Advocates, plays a critical role in ensuring that abused and neglected children have a voice in the courtroom. Led by Executive Director Cynthia Chauvin, CASA’s mission is to provide unwavering support to these children during their time of need.

Formerly, this CASA program served Hancock County alone and was able to provide a CASA volunteer advocate for 100% of the children in foster care. Since the end of last year, CASA has grown into a new name, CASA of South Mississippi, and has expanded to also provide advocacy for children in Harrison and Stone Counties. With almost 400 children in foster care in the three counties, there is a greater need than ever to support these children in difficult circumstances.

WHO ARE CASA VOLUNTEERS?

CASA volunteers are trusted adults who remain consistent in the life of their assigned children--from case assignment to case closure. These volunteers reduce the negative effects of trauma when children must be removed from their families, and they advocate for the best interests of those children to achieve safe

and permanent homes.

Former foster youth Haley Wing, who now serves on CASA’s board of directors, says, “My relationship with my CASA was the closest thing I had to a mother. My CASA taught me to use my voice.”

MAKING A DIFFERENCE FOR CHILDREN

In 2024, CASA has set a goal of recruiting and training 35 new volunteers with a focus on serving Harrison and Stone counties. These volunteers play a vital role in the lives of these children, committing about eight to 10 hours per month to writing reports, attending court hearings and providing invaluable support.

But the biggest part of being an advocate is knowing the difference you can make in a child’s life. Advocate Julie

Cannon, who has served 44 children over the past 14 years, says, “It is the most rewarding job you will ever do in your life--ever. It’s amazing.”

Advocate Brooke Bourgeois adds, “Our work is never going to be complete as long as there is a wait list.”

If you’re interested in making a difference in the lives of abused and neglected children, we invite you to join CASA as a volunteer. You must be at least 21 years old, pass a background check and be willing to dedicate your time to this important cause. To learn more about becoming a volunteer or supporting our efforts in other ways, please call (228) 344-0419 or visit casasouthms.org Together, we can be the voice for those who need it most.

Feeling burnt out, caregivers?

In their noble pursuit of serving others, caregivers often find themselves neglecting their own needs and wellbeing. The demands of their role can be allconsuming, leaving little time or energy for self-care. But to be at their best, caregivers must carve out moments for themselves, particularly spending time in nature. Outdoor activities not only offer relief from the stresses of caregiving, but they also provide physical, mental and emotional benefits that can revitalize the spirit and enhance wellness.

MENTAL AND EMOTIONAL BENEFITS

Constantly tending to others’ needs can leave someone feeling drained and depleted, and the tranquility and beauty of the natural world can be a powerful antidote, helping to alleviate stress and promote relaxation. Whether it’s a leisurely walk in the park, a hike through the woods or watching a sunset, connecting with nature provides much-needed solace and rejuvenation.

Getting outdoors also offers caregivers a welcome respite from the demands of their roles, allowing them to temporarily disconnect and focus on themselves. In nature’s embrace, caregivers can find a sense of freedom and liberation, unencumbered by the responsibilities that often weigh on them. Getting outdoors also can provide opportunities for selfreflection and introspection while allowing caregivers to recharge their batteries and return to their roles with a renewed sense of purpose and energy.

PHYSICAL BENEFITS

Besides the emotional boost it gives, regular exposure to nature has been shown to lower blood pressure, reduce inflammation and improve immune function. Outdoor activities like hiking, gardening and swimming let caregivers get physical exercise, helping to improve their cardiovascular health, strengthen muscles and enhance overall fitness. By prioritizing nature activities, caregivers not only can

improve their physical health, but also increase their resilience and capacity to cope with caregiving’s demands.

FOSTERING DEEPER CONNECTIONS

If the person you care for can join you outdoors, spending time together in nature creates opportunities for meaningful interactions and shared experiences. Strengthen your bond by planting a garden, birdwatching or enjoying a picnic in the park, and see how these memorable moments enhance their quality of life and yours.

By connecting with nature, caregivers can give themselves the gifts of calm, peace and renewal, which, in turn, benefits those in their care. If the daily demands of caregiving are feeling especially heavy lately, take it as a sign to get outdoors. Where should you go? Here are some local nature trails to expore: www. gulfcoasttrails.org.

THE REAL COST OF INSURANCE FRAUD

— and why you need coverage

The prevalence of fraud ends up costing all of us more money. Insurance fraud is intentionally deceiving an insurance company for financial gain. It could involve falsifying information, inflating the value of damages or other deceptive behavior. Those who submit bogus claims will have coverage denied and likely canceled. Fraud is illegal and will result in criminal and financial penalties, but even worse, it places a large financial burden on the whole insurance industry that leads to higher costs for you and me.

next five years. Be sure you understand all the provisions of your policy contract before filing.

REDUCING THE RISK

We all hope that we never have to use our insurance, because each loss is a painful experience, but insurance is used to help you recover financially. Every part of our lives involves risk, and insurance serves to reduce the risk of losing everything you have worked for, and it will help your family and your business when the unexpected occurs.

INSURANCE PROVIDES ESSENTIAL PROTECTION

Nonetheless, insurance is a necessary expense, and you should not expect to get back all that you paid in. Insurance serves as financial protection against unexpected catastrophes like illness, accidents, weather or peoplerelated damages, broken pipes, liability issues and more. Peace of mind comes with having insurance because you will have financial help to put your life back together following a loss.

For valid claims, you would contact your agent or company and provide relevant and accurate information, such as photos and other documentation of the extent of the damage you have suffered. For a property claim, it is best to ensure that the repair cost will exceed your deductible. Otherwise, you will not be paid in a settlement, but the cost of processing the claim will be attributed to your insurance premium for the

In addition to property protection, insurance can provide legal defense from lawsuits and pay for legal representation, court fees and judgment amounts, which can be substantial. Many policies also include provisions to help preserve your reputation and assist with compliance with your contractual requirements. The cost of insurance is directly related to the level of the risk and exposure, and the insurance company’s assessment of the risk profile of the individual or business, based on factors such as claims records and credit history. Claims frequency and severity are major influences on the cost of coverage. The more attractive your home or business is to the insurance marketplace, the lower your rate will be.

CHRISTINA GRIFFITH

Outrunning cancer

MY HEALTH CHALLENGE: In October of 2021, I found a lump in my left breast via a self-examination. I was 38 and had been diligent about my yearly gynecological exams, but I was two years shy of the recommended age to begin mammograms. By November of 2021, I had my first mammogram, and I was diagnosed with stage IIB breast cancer.

WHAT I DID

My initial approach to the diagnosis was fear and stubbornness, honestly -- fear of the impacts to my children and fear of the unknown. A cancer diagnosis, despite the stage, comes with many unknown variables. There was stubbornness in that I don’t like labels and hate predictive indexing even more.

Once the dust had settled and the results were confirmed, I began researching. I read anything I could find to prepare my mindand more importantly, my body - for the challenges ahead.

At the time of the diagnosis, I was an avid runner, so my mind was set on moving forward physically and mentally. I wanted to set the example for my children so they didn’t see their mom stop living because of this.

From March through July of 2022, I received 14 rounds of chemo, along with 30 rounds of radiation from September to October of 2022.

I’ve also gone through six surgeries between 2022 and 2023. My breast cancer was fueled by estrogen, so I will be on medication for the foreseeable future to help decrease the chances of a recurrence. I’m two years from diagnosis and, so far, disease free. I pray not to have a recurrence but want to keep my body in a healthy enough state to ensure if it must fight again, it can do so.

THE HARDEST AND MOST REWARDING PARTS

The fear of the unknown has been the hardest part. At the beginning, I was afraid the chemo would prevent me from running or being present for my children. This ended up being an

unnecessary fear, I ran 300-plus miles during chemo and 100-plus during radiation. My oncologist supported my every step and encouraged me to continue doing things that made me feel like myself. I would wear a baseball hat (to hide my obviously bald head) and run as far as my body would allow. I was there for my children and worked during treatment.

The most rewarding part was watching how resilient my children were through this journey; they and my husband were my biggest cheerleaders.

MY ADVICE TO OTHERS

Be open and honest with your medical team. If you are struggling with any aspect of your treatment or diagnosis, speak to them. I had an amazing medical team that helped me through each phase of this journey.

The one thing I regret is not finding a support group. Enduring this alone, even with a supportive tribe of people, is difficult and lonely. Having someone there who knows what the experience is like makes a difference. I inadvertently found this group of women during radiation, but not during chemo, and it made going through radiation a bit less scary.

WHAT LIFE IS LIKE NOW

This experience made me realize just how fast life can change with one scan or lab result. I don’t allow the “small stuff” to stress me out as much anymore. I don’t want to spend my time worrying about insignificant things.

My proudest moments are my post-treatment races. While in chemo, I planned race-cations and I ran two half marathons: one in Guntersville, Alabama, and one in Panama City Beach, Florida. I trained throughout treatment, and I wanted to show my family and myself that I could persevere. The memory of seeing my kids and my husband at the finish lines will forever hold a special place in my heart.

I won’t lie; you don’t come back from two years of difficult and life-changing decisions the same person. I’ve adapted, to some degree, to the ebb and flow of this journey. The longer my hair grows and the further I get from active treatment, the more I feel the memory loosen its grip. But the fear is ever present and something you learn to live with. When I feel that fear, I remind myself that I can cope, I can pivot and I can fight because my family is worth fighting for.

THE TINIEST OF SMILES NEED TLC TOO!

Did you know that May 2 is National Baby Day? Keep the tiny, growing smiles of your babies healthy with these tricks, tips and things you may not know from South Mississippi Smiles!

BABY TEETH: Baby teeth are temporary, but important. They help your child chew, speak and smile until their “big teeth” arrive and help permanent teeth grow in the correct position. Cavities are a threat as soon as a baby’s first teeth appear, and almost one in four children (ages 2 to 5) have cavities in their baby teeth. Cavities can hurt and cause problems with eating, playing, learning and even sleeping. So where do you start with dental and oral care for infants?

BOTTLE FEEDINGS: Bottles should be filled with milk or formula, and not with sugary drinks or juices. Be sure to finish feedings before bedtime, and do not let your child fall asleep with a bottle in his or her mouth.

CLEANING GUMS AND TEETH: After every bottle feeding, remember to gently wipe your baby’s gums with a clean washcloth that is soft and damp or wet gauze. After your child’s first tooth appears, brush his or her teeth every morning and night with a baby toothbrush and a smear of fluoride toothpaste (the size of a grain of rice).

FIRST DENTAL VISIT: You should schedule your baby’s first dental visit by his or her first birthday or after the first tooth appears, whichever happens first. Dr. Cameron Larson, owner and managing partner of South Mississippi Smiles, says, “We encourage parents to bring their children in as early as 6 months, even if a child hasn’t gotten his or her first teeth. It’s important for parents to start that routine visit and for us to provide education, especially to first-time parents.”

EARLY EDUCATION: South Mississippi Smiles cares about good dental health care beyond their offices and make visits to elementary schools, head starts, maternity events and health fairs throughout the year. They provide demonstrations to children on how to brush and floss, with puppet story times to promote healthy habits early. To schedule a visit from South Mississippi Smiles for a fun dental presentation for kids, email GingerChristian@KidsDentalBrands.com.

WHERE SHOULD I MAKE MY APPOINTMENT?: South Mississippi Smiles is a just-for-kids dental office that provides a fun, family-friendly environment, with offices in Gulfport and Pascagoula. Televisions play children’s movies in every patient area, and parents always are welcome in treatment rooms. Most insurance plans are accepted. Both offices offer conscious sedation, which is provided at no charge to military families on the Gulf Coast.

GULF COAST NEUROSPA

Breaking boundaries, offering hope

If you or someone you love has fought a mental health battle, you know medications don’t always bring relief.

But for those who are struggling with serious depression, obsessive compulsive disorder and other conditions, Gulf Coast NeuroSpa offers hope. With locations in Gulfport and Ocean Springs, the mental health clinic opened in 2020 and is the first interventional psychiatry clinic on the Coast.

The founders, Dr. Bryan Vyverberg and Scott Turner, saw an unmet need for patients who seem to not respond to standard depression treatments.

“They shared a vision to bring the latest and most effective depression treatments to the Coast,” says CEO Stephanie Dicharry. “Our mission is truly rooted in love for our community.”

TMS THERAPY AND SPRAVATO

The clinic began by offering a therapy called transcranial magnetic stimulation. The outpatient procedure targets the area of the brain believed to regulate mood.

“At the time, there were no TMS therapy providers on the Coast,” Dicharry says.

Later, Gulf Coast NeuroSpa became the region’s first Spravato treatment center. The nasal spray, which is a ketamine derivative, has shown great promise for helping those with treatment-resistant depression.

“Spravato is the first anti-depressant that is FDA approved as a safe treatment for adult patients with suicidal ideations,” Dicharry says. “This is groundbreaking in psychiatry.”

Both TMS therapy and Spravato have received gamechanging clearances in recent years, according to Dicharry.

TMS was FDA approved for obsessive compulsive disorder in 2017, and just weeks ago, TMS therapy was FDA approved for adolescents ages 15 and older.

“It is important to understand what FDA approved means to truly appreciate how exciting the last year has been for our field,” Dicharry says. “FDA approved means that the treatment or medicine has enough peer reviewed, significant data to support that the treatment is both effective and safe for use.”

Another service, massage therapy, has been available at Gulf Coast NeuroSpa since 2021 for patients with chronic muscle tension and pain. Dicharry points out that insurance coverage for massage therapy is available for veterans — and hopefully others in the future.

LOOKING AHEAD, CHANGING LIVES

In a field where collaboration is key, Gulf Coast NeuroSpa maintains strong ties with fellow mental health providers, recognizing the collective effort needed to bridge gaps in care. The clinic’s evidence-based approach has earned rave reviews, with patients calling the treatment they received there “lifechanging,” “amazing” and “my saving grace.”

Looking ahead, Dicharry is excited and encouraged by the advances she’s seeing, and whatever breakthroughs come next, it’s safe to say Gulf Coast NeuroSpa will remain at the forefront of innovation.

“We look forward to the future of interventional psychiatry,” Dicharry says, “and we are committed to continue pioneering these cutting-edge services and making them available to our community.”

Triumphing over trigeminal neuralgia

FROM MEMORIAL HEALTH SYSTEM

Sherri has a bubbly and nurturing personality, but these qualities were dimmed for years due to a crippling pain for which she was continually misdiagnosed. After a decade of discomfort, she finally received the correct diagnosis for what was keeping her from sleeping, eating, drinking and even hugging her grandkids comfortably: trigeminal neuralgia.

WHAT IS TRIGEMINAL NEURALGIA?

Dr. Miguel Melgar, a board-certified neurological surgeon, explains that trigeminal neuralgia is a condition characterized by excruciating pain on one side of the face. Typically, this condition impacts the elderly population. It strikes unexpectedly, like a lightning bolt in an otherwise ordinary day, leaving the sufferer reeling from its intensity.

"Patients may be doing normal things," Dr. Melgar says, "but then a severe pain comes, followed by a continuous burning sensation that lingers for hours or even days."

THE ROOT OF THE PAIN

The cause of this relentless pain lies deep within the intricate network of facial nerves. Dr. Melgar explains.

"The trigeminal nerve, responsible for transmitting sensations on the face to the brain, is impacted,” he says.

“A blood vessel surrounding the nerve at its origin in the brainstem triggers a response with every heartbeat, leading to the debilitating pain experienced by patients."

Sherri says many doctors didn’t take the time to listen to her symptoms. But then, by chance, she met family medicine specialist Dr. Kerry Scott. Dr. Scott, familiar with trigeminal neuralgia, recommended that she consult with a neurologist after considering her symptoms.

FINDING RELIEF

With a surgical procedure tailored to address the root cause of her pain, Sherri found herself on the path to relief.

"Just about instant relief," she says. Surgery for trigeminal neuralgia requires significant expertise in microsurgery around the brainstem and other vital brain structures.

A REMARKABLE RECOVERY

Dr. Melgar emphasizes the importance of offering such procedures to the community.

"I'm relieved that I'm not in so much pain anymore. I would wake up screaming and praying for pain relief."

"Living with agonizing pain all day long is unbearable," he says. The transformation achieved through surgery restores not just physical comfort, but also the joy of living.

"I'm relieved that I'm not in so much pain anymore,” Sherri says. “I would wake up screaming and praying for pain relief."

For Sherri, the surgery was not just a medical procedure, but a catalyst for profound change.

"I feel rested. I feel more energized,” she says. “It's been a hard journey, but now I have answers to my prayers."

Prevention is the best medicine

GET SCREENED TO CATCH CANCER IN EARLIEST, MOST TREATABLE STAGES

As the saying goes, prevention is better than a cure. Regular checkups and screenings are important parts of everyone’s preventive care. They are key for maintaining good health and reducing your risk of serious health conditions.

Two of the most important screenings for women are for breast cancer and colorectal cancer. Excluding skin cancer, breast cancer is the most common cancer found in women in the United States. Colorectal cancer is not far behind in fourth place, according to the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention.

This is why screening is so vital. The tests can find cancer early, in its most treatable stages, which in turn helps save lives. Screenings for some types of cancer even can detect cells that are precancerous, and doctors can remove them before tumors form.

It’s also important to know when you should be screened and the types of screening options available.

BREAST CANCER SCREENING

Many breast cancers don’t come with symptoms. They only are detected on a mammogram screening, which is why we encourage annual mammograms for most women age 40 and older regardless of family history.

Women at a high risk of breast cancer may need to start screening before age 40. They also may need a breast MRI to

provide more details about their breast tissue.

The most advanced form of breast cancer screening is a 3D mammogram. Multiple images of the breast are captured from different angles using X-ray. Then, they are merged into a three-dimensional view of the breast. This allows a radiologist to carefully look through different layers of the image, making it easier to spot any areas of concern.

COLORECTAL SCREENING

Starting at age 45, women at average risk should talk with a healthcare provider about testing options. Women with a high risk of colorectal cancer may need to start screening earlier. You are considered average risk if you have none of the following factors:

• Personal history of polyps or colorectal cancer

• Inflammatory bowel disease

• Hereditary colorectal cancer syndrome

• Previous abdominal or pelvic radiation treatment

• Family history of colorectal cancer

The gold standard of colon-cancer screening is a colonoscopy. This is a procedure that looks inside of your colon for possible signs of disease. Patients who have normal results can go 10 years between colonoscopies, which end for most people at age 75.

Other test options for colorectal cancer screening include stool-based tests and other types of visual exams. Stool testing is required every one to three years, depending on the type of test used. The two visual exam alternatives to a colonoscopy are CT colonography or sigmoidoscopy. Both options require testing every five years.

Keep your health on the right track with regular checkups and screenings. If you develop any symptoms that cause concern, see your doctor for early detection.

Low-impact exercise:

GENTLE ON JOINTS, BIG ON BENEFITS

With summer nearly here, it's a great time to try some low-impact exercises. They're gentle, yet effective, and perfect if you're recovering from an injury, want a more mindful workout or are just looking for a change.

Let’s delve into all the great benefits of these routines, like helping your joints and boosting your mood. You may find that low-impact exercises are your new favorite way to stay active and feel great!

PILATES

Pilates is awesome for your joints! It's a low-impact exercise that focuses on controlled movements and good alignment. This helps make your muscles stronger and more flexible without overworking your joints. It's especially great if you've got joint problems or are recovering from an injury. Plus, Pilates works your core muscles, which can make you more stable and less likely to get joint injuries. If you want a gentle but supereffective way to keep your joints in top shape, Pilates might be just what you need.

GOLFING

Golfing isn't just a fun way to spend time outdoors; it's also a fantastic low-impact exercise that's easy on the joints. Unlike high-impact activities that can be tough on your body, golfing offers a gentle workout that can help improve flexibility, balance and endurance without excessive joint strain. The swinging motion involved in golfing engages multiple muscle groups, including those around the hips, back and shoulders, which can help strengthen these areas and reduce the risk of joint injuries. Additionally, walking the course provides a great cardiovascular workout without the jarring impact of running or jumping. So, if you're looking for a relaxing, yet beneficial, way to stay active and keep your joints healthy, consider hitting the green.

Kaisha Colston is a content creator and fitness blogger. Connect with her on Instagram (@kaishacolston) and at fabfitfeminine.com.

Kayaking offers a wonderful opportunity to explore nature while providing a low-impact workout that's easy on the joints. Paddling gently through calm waters engages the muscles without subjecting the joints to high levels of stress, making it an ideal exercise for those with joint issues or who are recovering from injuries. The rhythmic motion of paddling helps improve flexibility and strength in the upper body, especially in the arms, shoulders and back, while also providing a good

Want happy legs? It starts with vein health

May is National Women’s Health Awareness Month — an opportunity to encourage women to prioritize their wellbeing. Often overlooked, proper vein health can contribute to the satisfaction women feel with their overall health. Studies estimate that 40% of the U.S. population has chronic venous insufficiency, which occurs more frequently over the age of 50 and more often in women than men. Why, you may ask? While vein disease is common, it’s not normal, so let’s look at its causes and, most importantly, how to combat it.

WHAT CAUSES VEIN DISEASE?

A normal, healthy vein functions to pump blood back toward the heart. When a vein valve fails, blood begins to pool, creating venous reflux. This abnormal reversal of blood flow is known as venous insufficiency and creates those often painful and unsightly leg veins women (and men) despise.

While aging, heredity, and prolonged sitting and standing are three of the leading causes of venous insufficiency, and shared equally by both men and women, certain factors affect women more:

• Hormone changes resulting from puberty, birth control pills, pregnancy, menopause and hormone replacement therapy all can contribute to vein disease in women.

• High-heeled shoes, with which women have a love-hate relationship, limit the “pump” action of the foot and calf that

promotes healthy circulation.

• Wearing spandex or tight-fitting clothes for prolonged periods can have adverse effects on leg veins by disrupting blood flow, increasing pressure on the veins, impairing circulation and hindering lymphatic drainage.

• Pregnancy increases venous disease symptoms and often becomes more prominent with each pregnancy.

HOW CAN YOU REDUCE RISK OF VEIN DISEASE?

Many of the causes of venous insufficiency are unavoidable, but women (and men) can employ these measures to reduce the risk of vein disease and maintain overall good health:

• Stay hydrated: When adequately hydrated, blood is less likely to thicken, reducing the risk of blood clots and supporting healthy

blood flow throughout the body. Hydration also helps to maintain optimal blood volume and viscosity.

• Focus on fitness: Exercising frequently and maintaining a normal body mass index play a key role in fighting vein disease.

• Give the heels a rest: Enjoy high-heeled shoes occasionally, but choose a more leg- and footfriendly shoe for daily wear.

• Wear compression stockings: No one loves compression stockings, but wearing them for prolonged periods of sitting (for work, while flying or driving), standing and during pregnancy can offer significant vein health benefits.

• Seek early intervention: When signs of leg swelling, achiness, fatigue, skin color changes and/or visible veins appear, get evaluated by a vein specialist. Venous issues will not resolve on their own or with a “magic cream.” Today’s vein

treatments are quick, easy, safe and effective.

If leg veins are causing your legs to be unhealthy and taking a toll on your confidence, reach out to a board-certified vein specialist for the care you need. Treatments are minimally invasive, typically require no downtime and are mostly covered by insurance and Medicare. Healthy, happy legs are waiting for you!

Behind a brave smile, many of us wage a constant battle against negative thoughts and emotions. Although we may put up a good front and seem “normal” to the outside world, some find it hard to get out of bed and function from day to day. Not only can this struggle be hard to articulate, but those living with mental illness also face the stigma society places on their condition, causing many to stay silent.

But as isolated as those with mental health problems might feel, they are far from alone. With our annual May Day section, we strive to bring this important issue out of the shadows and remove the shame from seeking help.

Breaking the mental illness silence and bringing hope

Studies show 26.4 percent of U.S. women had some type of mental illness in the past year. Research also shows that some mental health conditions, like depression, anxiety disorders and eating disorders, disproportionately affect women.

Preserving your mental health in a fast-paced world

We live in a rapidly changing world that can be complex to navigate. About half of Americans can remember a time when we were not constantly connected and could more easily tune out the noise of the world, while the younger half can’t imagine life without the internet.

Modern life can significantly impact our mental health — for better or worse. The disturbing imagery we are exposed to in the media can be deeply unsettling. At the same time, our current technology also allows us to mobilize and provide collective support more efficiently in times of natural disasters or injustice.

While our devices make us more connected than ever, loneliness is an increasingly serious public health concern. We can have conversations with friends and family on the other side of the world in real time. However, we also may know that we were not invited to a friend’s party down the street.

Finding a sense of calm and focusing on wellbeing when you are having mental health concerns can be daunting in our fastpaced, tech-driven society. It can be especially challenging to know where to start.

May is Mental Health Month, and the Mental Health Association is raising awareness of the significant role mental health plays in our lives. We are encouraging members of the community to act now to protect their mental health and overall wellbeing.

This May, the Mental Health Association will focus its efforts on helping members of the community to:

While our devices make us more connected than ever, LONELINESS is an increasingly serious public health concern.

• LEARN how modern life affects mental health, with new resources to navigate our changing world.

• ACT by building a coping toolbox to manage stress, difficult emotions and challenging situations.

• ADVOCATE to improve mental health for themselves, their loved ones and their community.

Mental Health America has created a toolkit to help individuals determine where to start. The toolkit provides free, practical resources for addressing mental health. Visit mhanational.org/may to learn more.

If you think you may be experiencing symptoms of a mental health condition, you can take a free, private mental health test at msmentalhealth.org (click the big green button) to determine the next steps.

It’s important to remember that working on your mental health takes time. Change won’t happen overnight. By focusing on small changes, you can move through the stressors of modern life and develop long-term strategies to support yourself on an ongoing basis. For more information, call (228) 864-6274.

WEAR GREEN AND SUPPORT MENTAL HEALTH AWARENESS!

Did you know that 1 in 5 Americans will experience a diagnosable mental health condition this year?

By joining the “Be Seen in Green” challenge during Mental Health Month this May, you’re not just wearing a color, you’re shining a light of hope and support on mental health for millions.

Aiming to educate Americans about mental health and mental health conditions, Mental Health Month was started in 1949 by Mental Health America. Over the years, we’ve engaged millions in our mission through media, events, resources, and screenings. This tradition continues with a vibrant display of solidarity: wearing green to symbolize our collective commitment to mental well-being.

WHY WEAR GREEN?

As the official color for mental health awareness, green represents renewal, hope, and vitality. Wearing green, whether it’s a complete outfit, a simple green awareness bracelet, or lighting up your building, symbolizes unwavering support for mental health. Participating in this challenge sends a powerful message: Mental health is important, and by joining together, we are advocating for and supporting mental health.

FROM BUSY TO BALANCED

A Mental health and wellness journey

I laid my head on my desk and began to weep as tears streamed down my face.

I was strong and fearless — but extremely tired. I was signed up to do just about everything, putting in 14-plus hour days on top of being a full-time single mom. However, this year, I have a new motto: Busy to balanced.

I understand that other factors can contribute to tiredness, but those who say “yes to everyone else and don’t take care of themselves are my focus.

I am not saying balance happens overnight, but sometimes you must make hard choices. Other aspects such as self-care, coping and stress relief play a role in becoming more balanced, but reducing obligations is extremely beneficial for your mental health and wellness.

This new season did not come without opposition, even internally, because I was used to always saying “yes.” One of the questions I ask myself now is, “Are you able to take on anything else, and can you let something go?” One of the pitfalls about lacking balance is that you suffer physically, emotionally and spiritually.

My new mantra this year: “I don’t have the capacity.” It’s short, sweet, honest and to the point. Here are some helpful reminders that support a more balanced life.

1. You matter. Take care of yourself because there is only one you.

2. It’s okay to say “no,” and it doesn't make you a bad person.

3. Boundaries are essential for establishing what is acceptable in relationships and crucial for your wellbeing.

4. Do the inner work. Healing is a process that begins with you.

5. Rest — your body, mind and spirit need a break.

6. Clear vision and established goals help with better attention and a more focused lifestyle.

7. Meditation — being able to quiet my mind and spirit has helped me be more at peace.

8. Pursue peaceful encounters. Position yourself naturally and emotionally in places that aid wellness.

9. Good company is key. Surround yourself with positive people who enhance your wellbeing.

10. Make a point to set aside time for yourself. Empty cups pour no juice!

This is all new for me, but I prefer balance over busyness any day.

SYMPTOMS FOR TREATMENT

• Depression • Affective disorder

• Schizophrenia • Anxiety

• Grief and loss

• Difficulty coping

• Behavioral illness related to substance abuse

• Bipolar disorder

• Obsessive or compulsive thoughts

I always say, “I didn’t just choose social work; it also chose me!” The love I have for mental health was inspired by my son and his continual struggles. He was diagnosed with attentiondeficit/hyperactivity disorder (ADHD) and oppositional defiance disorder (ODD) at age 5, and this was challenging for me. Not only did I have to be his mother, but also his therapist and advocate. Undoubtedly, this fueled my desire to better understand him and my passion for helping other parents, guardians and children/adolescents. My primary areas of focus are children and adolescent disorders like ADHD, ODD, autism spectrum disorder (ASD), behavior/conduct disorder, mood disorders and trauma.

As a mental health professional, my mission is not only to help people develop a better vision and see their lives through a wider lens, but to also create the same opportunity for others to see them from a broader perspective. Life can become blurry when you’re struggling with variations in mental functioning.

WHAT IS NEURODIVERISTY?

Neurodiversity is a term characterizing variation in brain function. Neurodivergent individuals have diverse perspectives and responses to the world, which substantiates the premise that there’s no particular "right" way for the brain to work. Neurological or developmental disorders like ADHD and ASD are included under the term neurodivergent.

Some symptoms of ASD include difficulties in social

communication and restricted and repetitious behaviors. ADHD symptoms include inattention, impulsivity and hyperactivity, while ODD symptoms include angry moods, defiance, and struggles with authority. Many times, symptoms can overlap with one another, causing complexity for diagnosing.

Those diagnosed with neurodivergent conditions often are misunderstood and misconceived by their parents, teachers and peers. It is time to respect and celebrate the differences in the neurodivergent community instead of automatically concluding that “something is wrong.”

WHAT IS PATHOLOGICAL DEMAND AVOIDANCE?

Which brings me to the mention of pathological demand avoidance (PDA), an intricate and rare neurodiverse profile that can overlap and interact with other neurodiverse conditions. Although PDA is not formally identified as a mental illness by the Diagnostic and Statistical Manual of Mental Disorders, it nonetheless can have a negative impact on a person's quality of life and ability to function. PDA has characteristics like demand avoidance and challenges with social cues and creating/maintaining relationships that overlap with ASD and ODD.

Accepting neurodiversity and promoting understanding can create a more inclusive world where everyone can lead a successful life, regardless of his or her neurological profile

Discover your best shades with color

analysis

Do you have a closet bursting at the seams yet feel like you have nothing to wear? Is coordinating outfits challenging? Do you love a certain item in your wardrobe but find that it never seems to work on you?

If you answered “yes” to these questions, you, my friend, probably are buying clothes outside of your best color palette.

WHAT IS COLOR ANALYSIS?

Seasonal color analysis is not new. It grew in popularity back in the 1980s with Carole Jackson’s book “Color Me Beautiful.” I remember my mother having her colors done as part of a professional training class back then. The color craze rebounded again in recent years, with new social media filters and phone apps helping people find their “season.”

The theory is simple: Each of us has a certain palette that best harmonizes with our natural skin, eye and hair colors. If we wear colors in that palette, we will effortlessly look our best. If we shop only from our palette, then our clothing will effortlessly match.

THE FABRIC DOESN’T LIE

The next question naturally becomes, “What’s my palette?” There are plenty of ways you can answer this question. Online tools and free tests abound, as well as books on the subject. I offer a technique called “draping,” where I physically drape my clients with fabrics of various shades in natural light in a white room. Together we witness how each color brightens, dulls or discolors the skin. Some shades enhance wrinkles and blemishes; others minimize them. It’s a fascinating process because the fabric doesn’t lie. You can see the results in the mirror!

Jaimee Dorris offers seasonal coloranalysis draping sessions at her studio in Bay St Louis. Learn more at JaimeeDorris.com.

The good news is most of us are naturally attracted to the colors in our seasonal palette. The bad news is most of us also are easily influenced by trends and colors that we love on other people. The goal, then, of a coloranalysis session is to help you discern between the two and shop with confidence. When you know your palette, you can ignore everything else that’s not.

YOUR PALETTE DOESN’T CHANGE

The best thing about seasonal color analysis is that it doesn’t change. Sure, you can dye your hair or adjust your skin with a spray tan or makeup, but your natural palette will be the same throughout your life. The colors that look great on you as a teenager also will harmonize well when you’re older. It’s an investment of an hour or two that ultimately will save you time, energy and money over the course of your life. Let 2024 be the year you discover your best colors!

“The business has grown substantially over the years,” she says, “just as I have grown professionally.”

Virtually any aesthetic service a client could want, from facials and massages to hair removal and lash extensions, is on Bridges’ menu. A move last year to a larger location on Pass Road allowed the spa to start offering nail services, including several types of manicures, pedicures and enhancements.

BROW LAMINATION

Brow lamination straightens and lifts eyebrow hairs, creating fuller, styled brows lasting four to six weeks. It’s popular because it creates thick, groomed brows with a quick application, immediate results and low maintenance. It suits various eyebrow shapes and offers convenience in beauty routines.

Social media and influencers have boosted the popularity of brow lamination by sharing dramatic transformations online. The trend offers a semipermanent solution and caters to those seeking groomed brows with minimal effort.

Create the perfect skincare routine

It all starts with knowing your skin type

Here are some tips for starting a skincare routine that keeps your complexion looking its best:

PICK THE RIGHT PRODUCTS

It is important to use products that are appropriate for your skin type.

• Dry skin is tight, cracked and sometimes flaky and craves hydration and moisture.

• Normal skin is in the middle, neither dry nor oily, and its condition often depends on the season.

• Combination-to-oily skin has a shine in the t-zone (forehead and nose). Clogged pores lead to breakouts.

MAKE SKINCARE A HABIT

Here are the five essential steps in a skincare regimen:

1. Cleanse to remove impurities, oil, sweat and makeup.

2. Exfoliate to remove dead and dull skin.

3. Tone to clarify your pores.

4. Moisturize to make your face soft and supple.

5. Protect with sunscreen and/or foundation.

Keep up your routine twice a day (morning and night) to ensure a healthy complexion. Remember — makeup doesn’t cover up bad skin.

tips for finding your dream wedding dress 8

GOWNS BY THE WEDDING COLLECTION

BY

With all eyes on the bride on the big day, the gown is a focal point of any wedding. If you’re about to get married, you’ve probably heard that finding the dress is like finding your soulmate; When you know, you know.

And while some brides have sketched out what they want down to the last detail, others are undecided and have no idea where, when or how to start looking. Whichever category you fall into, take advantage of these practical tips for picking the perfect gown:

1. START EARLY

Begin your search for a wedding gown early enough to allow time for fittings and alterations. Ideally, start looking at least six to nine months ahead of your big day. The more time, the better.

2. SET A BUDGET

We know, talking about money is deeply unromantic. Nonetheless, you still must decide how much you are comfortable spending on your wedding gown, including alterations and accessories, and stick to it. If your budget isn’t as big as you’d like, don’t fret; beautiful dresses are available at a variety of price points.

3. RESEARCH STYLES

No matter where you shop, the first question from the sales associate is likely to be the same: “What are you looking for?” Before you hit the stores, peruse bridal magazines, websites and social media platforms to gather inspiration and get an idea of what styles and silhouettes you like. Consider factors like neckline, fabric and embellishments. Ultimately, choose a dress that reflects your personal style and makes you feel confident and beautiful. Don’t feel pressured to conform to trends if they don’t align with your taste.

4. CONSIDER THE THEME AND VENUE

What’s your wedding vibe? Your answer can go a long way toward helping you choose the right dress. Is your celebration laidback and beachy, or upscale and elegant? Whatever feel you’re going for, your gown should complement the venue and theme of your big day. For instance, a beach wedding might call for something lightweight and flowy, while a formal affair may warrant a more structured, ornate gown.

5. WHEN IN DOUBT, TRY IT ON

Don’t dismiss any option out of hand; you don’t know until you try it. Keep an open mind, and give any style a shot, even ones you haven’t considered or are convinced you won’t like. What do you have to lose? You might be surprised by what flatters you.

6. COMFORT IS KEY

Remember that you’ll be wearing your gown for several hours, so choose accordingly — and wisely. Ensure that you can move, sit and dance comfortably.

7. BRING SUPPORTIVE COMPANIONS

Trusted friends or family members, whose judgment you value, can be a huge asset in your dress search. However, be mindful not to bring too many people, as excessive opinions can be overwhelming.

8. GO WITH YOUR GUT

When you find the dress that feels right, trust your instincts. If you can’t stop thinking about it and can imagine walking down the aisle in it, then it’s probably the one.

Above all, remember to have fun! Enjoy the process and trust that in the end, you’ll find the dress of your dreams.

Embark on a culinary journey at Indian Delight

Ocean Springs restaurant infuses each dish with passion, authenticity

For those seeking an authentic culinary experience with a unique flair, I encourage you to visit Indian Delight in Ocean Springs, where you will embark on an immersive voyage through the diverse and vibrant flavors of India.

Gautam Nautiyal, the driving force behind Indian Delight, began his culinary career by earning a degree in hotel management in Mumbai. After spending time at the prestigious Hyatt Regency in New Orleans, he branched out on his own with a commitment to preserving Indian flavors launching Indian Delight in 2021 in Hattiesburg.

MORE THAN A MEAL

Following his success upstate, Nautiyal brought his concept to the Coast in November 2023, where it has been embraced by the Ocean Springs community and quickly become a mustvisit destination.

“Tourists and locals alike should experience Indian Delight for an unparalleled culinary journey,” Nautiyal says. “With a

commitment to infusing freshness into every aspect of the dining experience, it stands as the highest-rated Indian restaurant in Mississippi, promising exceptional quality and authenticity. We offer more than just a meal; we provide a cultural immersion — allowing patrons to savor the flavors of India without leaving the state.”

The restaurant’s interior design whisks diners away to India, as every detail has been meticulously crafted to honor the country’s rich heritage. Most notably the chairs, which were sourced from the royal city of Rajasthan, add an elegant touch.

The ambiance is a wonderful complement to a wide variety of dining options. From chicken, lamb, goat, fish and shrimp for meat lovers to a substantial selection catering to vegetarian preferences, there’s something to satisfy every taste. The menu features more than 30 vegetarian dishes, as well as vegan and gluten-free options for those with

dietary restrictions.

“In our culinary philosophy, diversity is key,” Nautiyal says. “We take pride in offering a menu that caters to all palates and preferences. Whether you savor the subtle flavors of our mild dishes like korma or crave the fiery kick of our vindaloo, we have something to tantalize your tastebuds.”

BURSTS OF DIVERSE FLAVORS

Eager to sample a variety of flavors, my fiancé, Lauryn, and I started our culinary adventure with the assorted non-veg platter. The platter boasted a playful assortment that included crispy chicken pakora, which features chicken strips dipped in a chickpea batter and Indian spice; an aromatic fish amritsari, which are strips of fish fried in chickpea flour with Indian spices; a spicy shrimp chili; and the whimsical tossed chicken lollipops, which are fried, bone-in chicken wings

flavored with ginger and soy and tossed in a chili sauce.

The platter was accompanied by a duo of chutney dipping sauces: a refreshing mint and a spicy tamarind. Each bite was a burst of Indian spices and textures. While I found myself particularly drawn to the shrimp chili and the delectable chicken lollipops, Lauryn enjoyed the flavorful chicken pakora. Already planning our return, we’re eager to explore the assorted veg platter next time.

During our meal, we enjoyed a drink called mango lassi. Similar to a smoothie, it is crafted from mango puree, yogurt, milk and a touch of sweetener. It serves as a great way to temper the heat of spicier dishes.

For our main course, we indulged in a flavorful array of dishes. The shrimp tikka, which we were told is like Indian barbecue, is marinated for 12 hours, then cooked in a traditional clay oven called a tandoor. This results in tender bites bursting with flavor.

& Sat 11:00am - 9:00pm Sun, Mon, Wed, & Thur 11:00am - 8:00pm Brunch (Sunday’s 10-2)

We also delighted in the mix biryani, a rice dish combining chicken, lamb and shrimp, that was described to us as an Indian rendition of jambalaya or fried rice. The bowl was accompanied by raita, a cooling yogurt sauce with shredded cucumber, carrots and freshly chopped mint leaves, that proved perfect for balancing the spices.

Our feast continued with the chicken achaari, a north Indian curry served with Basmati rice. We used our plate of cheese naan, freshly baked Indian bread stuffed with mozzarella cheese, to sop up the spicy mixture.

ALREADY PLANNING A RETURN

Finally, we indulged in the dessert plate that showcased four distinct treats. My top picks were the kheer, a sumptuous Indian rice pudding slow-cooked with almonds and raisins, and the gajar halwa, a traditional dessert of carrots simmered in sweetened milk and butter. Lauryn particularly enjoyed the galub jamun –cheese curds deep fried and topped with honey and sugar syrup.

The fourth item, called rasmalai, takes cheese curds and steeps them in clotted cream infused with cardamom and saffron for 24 hours, which made for an interesting treat. The sampler provided a sweet and satisfying conclusion to our dining experience, and we can’t wait to return to try new dishes.

“Indian Delight is more than just a restaurant; it’s a culinary journey that transports diners to the vibrant streets and regal palaces of India right in the heart of Mississippi,” Nautiyal says. “From our commitment to infusing freshness into every dish to our dedication to preserving the authenticity of Indian cuisine, every aspect of our establishment reflects our passion for providing an unforgettable dining experience.”

Indian Delight is open Sunday through Thursday from 11 a.m.-9 p.m. (closed Tuesdays), and Friday and Saturday from 11 a.m.-10 p.m. Every six months, the restaurant introduces new dishes, and there are plans to offer Indian-style cocktails and wine pairings soon.

‘We are better together’

HOW STEPHEN CARLSON BUILT COASTAL CONTRACTING LLC

So, you want to build a business? That’s a great idea! First, I want to inspire you, encourage you and bring clarity to the process.

GETTING STARTED

First, let’s define who your market is. Your market is a critical piece of the business because you must know and appeal to your audience. What is the need you intend to fill? I would suggest finding a hole in the market — a spot that no one else is serving. For example, in the homebuilding business, market analysis may be done by networking with a Realtor and determining the price point at which no other company is building. Next, your new Realtor friend should be able to provide a market analysis showing a price point where most buyers are concentrated. Information about your target buyer will help you develop a structure and find the right market and price point.

Alright, great work; now how does our business function?

MANAGING A BUSINESS

As an entrepreneur, you can’t know it all; it takes a team. I have a personal belief: “We are better together.” We need to surround ourselves with people who are smarter than us and develop a culture. We need to share our vision and ideas and listen to others’ thoughts. Don’t forget, everyone has a voice; be humble and learn to listen. As a business owner or manager, you must be quiet where appropriate but unapologetic when it comes time for implementation or action.

Speaking of action, let’s discuss running a business for more clarity.

RUNNING A BUSINESS

Remember none of us can do it without the right team. I spoke with someone years back and asked about the hardest part of running a business. This person responded by saying “employees.” Yes, employees. They all have different motivators, opinions, ideas, etc. Oh, and these can change daily.

Don’t get cold feet on me now; after all, opening a business is not for the faint of heart.

Owning a business is not for everyone. Just because someone is great at a certain level doesn’t mean he or she will be great at the next. Owning a business also is scary; there will be times when everything seems like it’s caving in.

But I have good news: Owning a business has many benefits. You may feel a certain pleasure or momentum when you see the happiness on a client’s face. You can have a flexible schedule and attend more of your family’s events. Most importantly for me, you can grow a team and have an extended family. The most rewarding part for me is watching people rise to a level they never thought possible and realizing that I had a positive impact on someone’s life.

OK — enough talk, let’s get to work. After all, you have a business to build.

you should consider a TFRA:

1. TAXES

Right now in America, taxes are at an all-time low. The Tax Cuts and Jobs Act (TCJA) tax decreases expire on Dec. 31, 2025, meaning unless Congress acts, tax rates will revert to pre-TCJA levels. Based on our current national debt, I believe taxes will increase.

In a 401k or an IRA, you receive a tax break now with no way of knowing what your taxes will be when you get ready to retire. When you put your money into a TFRA, you know how much your tax bill will be because you already have paid the taxes on your contribution. You also can rest easier knowing you won’t owe any taxes on the earnings inside your TFRA.

2. VOLATILITY

One lesson the past few years have taught us is that the stock market is volatile. One minute, it is soaring, and the next, it crashes and takes our hardearned money with it. One of the great features of a TFRA is that it has what I call a “floor”; in other words, it allows you to take advantage of the upside of the market while locking in your money to prevent loss. Your money is not actually in the market, but indexed to the market;

5 reasons why you should consider a tax-free retirement account

As a financial professional, I like to present information and ask questions that cause people to think outside the box. With this in mind, and because you may not know what a tax-free retirement account (TFRA) is, let’s delve into this topic.

A TFRA is a retirement savings plan that works similarly to a ROTH Individual Retirement Account (IRA); you pay taxes on the money going into the plan, and the growth on your money is not taxed. However, unlike a ROTH, a TFRA does not have IRS-regulated restrictions on how or when you take money from your account.

when it goes up, you are credited with a gain, and when the market goes down, you do not suffer a loss.

3. LIQUIDITY

Under current law, qualified retirement accounts such as 410k, IRA and ROTH IRA plans have very limited liquidity. While some of these plans may contain a maximum $50,000 loan provision, depending on your account balance, many do not. Again, depending on the plan, you may not be able to access your money without penalty. A TFRA allows access to your money without the IRSmandated restrictions.

4. LIVING BENEFITS

Similar to a long-term care plan, a TFRA includes benefits for chronic, critical and terminal illness.

5. PERMANENT DEATH BENEFIT

Because the chassis upon which a TFRA is built is a specifically designed indexed universal life (IUL) insurance plan that takes advantage of the tax laws, there is a permanent death benefit beginning on day one.

According to the U.S. Census Bureau data, 50% of women and 47% of men between the ages of 55 and 66 have no

retirement savings. Other statistics tell us that 22 percent of Americans with a retirement savings plan have not contributed within the past year. What about you?

For those who have yet to begin planning for retirement, the contributions limit for qualified plans makes it hard to compensate for any planning failures in past years while allowing time for your money to grow. Unlike qualified plans, there are no limits on how much money you can put into a TFRA; however, it must adhere to the rules and laws of life insurance.

A TFRA could be the right option for you. A TFRA works great for businesses and their employees, no matter the business size. No annual reports are required, and there is no administrative cost for the employer. A recent survey revealed the number-one thing employees want from their employers: a retirement plan. About 75% of small businesses don’t offer any type of savings benefit. Individually or as a business. A TFRA can help you and your employees plan for a retirement to look forward to.
