Doug Thompson, Baseball Thompson attended the Perkinston Campus in 1994-1996. During his freshman year, he was the MVP for the MACJC South Division, All-State, AllRegion XXIII and NJCAA All-American. He was drafted by the Baltimore Orioles but instead returned to MGCCC. Jerika’s

creating her own fashion lane

ou may catch a glimpse of the fashion-conscious Jerika Vincent on “Let’s Make a Deal,” “2 Broke Girls,” or the popular teen mystery drama, “Pretty Little Liars.” Those are just a few of the programs this D’Iberville native has appeared on. But after five years in the fastpaced Los Angeles television scene, Vincent has returned to her roots — and created her own fashion lane on the Coast. Vincent is pursuing her dream of producing and hosting her own show in her own hometown. She’s also checked off a couple of other big moves: Graduated from University of Southern Mississippi with a marketing degree and found and married the love of her life, Cory Vincent. Gulf Coast Woman asked Vincent’s show producer, Elaine Stevens, a veteran in television and seasoned writer, to get Vincent to open up about her new life. Stevens is not just the producer of “Jerika’s Fashion Showcase,” she is a mentor, role model and “motherly” figure to the young talent. STEVENS: Jerika, I must admit when I first met you, I thought you were joking, bored, or completely uninformed when it came to producing a television show. Boy, was I wrong! I have described you to many people, but how would you describe yourself? VINCENT: I am a hard worker, first and foremost, and very passionate about television. I enjoy being around people who inspire me. I love the camera and I truly connect with people on and off camera. I seem to have a different interaction with people than most; I immediately become their go-to person. Maybe it’s because I am dedicated and loyal, especially to my family. STEVENS: So where did this passion for performance come from and how did you manage to develop it over the years?

VINCENT: I started performing on stage and in front of the camera as a very young child with my sister, Kelli — who is now a top model in Los Angeles, Miami and New York — and my cousins. They were my first role models. If they took dance lessons, I took dance lessons; if they played sports, I played sports. If they went out for cheerleading, I did too. We even went so far as to put on talent shows for our very big family and charged admission. That’s where my people and selling skills started. I remember going from dance recitals to softball in full make-up. Back in the day, I remember changing costumes, dancing, performing, and my family would say, ‘Jerika, you are made for TV! TV is you!’

STEVENS: Would you describe yourself as selfcompeting, keeping score on yourself to do just one more thing to the “nth” degree? VINCENT: I do compete with myself in every way. That’s what keeps me moving. But I believe in others succeeding, and I look for ways to help them succeed. That’s why “Jerika’s Fashion Showcase” is so important to me. I have always had a lot going on in my life. My friends keep asking, ‘Jerika, do you ever slow down?’ In the spring I was in the middle of final exams, planning my wedding at the White House Hotel, along with a final trip to Los Angeles to say good-bye to my friends at Paramount, and going into pre-production on my show!”

STEVENS: Where does that ‘I can do it all’ sense of confidence come from? VINCENT: I have always been a multi-tasker. With the show, I am the account executive, executive producer, public relations and marketing manager, accountant, and host. I’ve never been shy. Living and working in Los Angeles built my confidence even more. I attribute the fantastic group of professionals on “The Doctors,” where I interned, for being my industry mentors and instilling in me more confidence, most especially the female producers I met and worked with. I knew if they did it, I could do it, too. Of course, my sister, Kelli, is my true inspiration and role model and always will be. She is the reason I went to Los Angeles in the first place for a vacation of two weeks that lasted over five years. STEVENS: I know your sister, Kelli, and the Los Angeles fashion scene influenced your own personal fashion style. How did that translate into “Jerika’s Fashion Showcase”? VINCENT: Yes, I learned a lot living in Los Angeles. But my grandmother, Ellie Warren, is actually the one who taught me about buying local, which is the show’s key message. Grandma took Kelli and me on shopping sprees and I learned about buying smart. Kelli would come out with one bag and I would come out with four! My grandmother is 76-years-old and looking fine; she has even modeled on my show. As a result of her influence, I was awarded best dressed in middle and high school several times.

his has been a year filled with long, quiet thinking. I am not proud to admit that I recently fell off the gratitude wagon for a short time. I have been reminded that, in times of joy and sorrow and all moments in between, there is always something to evoke gratitude. Like happiness, love and kindness, gratefulness is a choice. So this year, I choose to give thanks for strength. Often my strength is borrowed — through words of encouragement, simple kindness or grace I do not deserve. As I kneel down to pray, my request is for strength — to recognize the right path, to honor my family and my God, to cherish and serve this Coast I so love. Family, community and faith are the essence of who I am; from each I draw strength. Forever will I appreciate the strength of character, importance of integrity and core values my parents instilled. My brother and I have returned to the Coast as the third generation in our family construction business, and I am thankful for his dedication to our employees and to continuing a legacy of loyalty and craftsmanship. His efforts now provide the framework and resources that allow me to be engaged in our community. As a new parent, I only can strive to be half the mother I have been blessed to know. For my husband and our wonderful new adventure of parenting, I am grateful.

have so many reasons to be thankful! First and foremost, I thank God for so many blessings. With His guidance, I have faced life’s biggest challenges, made it through and even learned a thing or two along the way. I am thankful for a happy married life to my husband, Roland, my best friend and my soulmate, who always brings out the best in me. I thank God for giving me a wonderful daughter, Shelby. She is my world! I am thankful for my family: my parents, seven brothers and sisters, and their many beautiful children. I have lived on the Mississippi Gulf Coast my entire life; I wouldn’t live anywhere else. The Coast is a wonderful community of people who are ready and willing to help you when you need help. And often, even when you don’t ask for help, good people see your need and offer to help. I love my community, especially Ocean Springs where I grew up in the 1960s and 1970s. It is a part of my life, and I will always treasure growing up in that beautiful, small town. I am thankful for the simple things that make life truly amazing. Happiness is key! Whatever makes you happy, do that — whether it’s a cupcake and an ice cream cone or a bike ride down the beach. I’m thankful to share my happiness with others. Even small gestures make a big

Exhausted, but grateful. I am thankful for Chris’ strength as a faith leader for our family. Louisa and I agree he’s pretty special. He pushes me to be my best self and loves me in spite of myself. Sometimes I wonder why. He probably does, too — but it’s too late to run! Louisa would chase him. So I choose to be grateful (most of the time). Communicating that gratitude effectively is still a work in progress. This Coast community always will be my first great love — the kind of lifelong love that is part of who I am. Our spirit of resilience continues to astound me, and I am strengthened and renewed by this place we are so fortunate to call home. Most importantly, I am grateful for faith, for the strength that comes in knowing that I never walk alone, particularly when the path is darkest. It is knowing that God has it together for me when I clearly do not. As I rise from the kneeler at Mass this Sunday and walk out to see the shimmering waters of our coastline, my prayer will be as it always is — that I have the strength to recognize God’s path and never lose sight of how truly blessed I am.

After graduation from high school, I attended Mississippi Gulf Coast community college working towards prerequisites for a nursing degree. It was at this point in my life that I had reached a crossroads and decided to enter the medical field to gain experience. One of the realizations I came to during this experience was that while patients would receive excellent medical care while in the office, their social situation at home and support network was often lacking. This was very frustrating to me, because while I wanted to help them, I realized I was unable to help improve their social and support network situations. I felt helpless. Out of this frustration of not being able to help solve social problems for the elderly population, grew a vision. The vision grew into research, which led me down the pathway of becoming a franchise owner with Visiting Angels. Visiting Angels is nationally recognized as Americaâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s first choice in home care. They are the market share leader nationally for in-home senior care. I felt that this was a perfect fit, to bring a much-needed service to the geriatric population of south Mississippi. During my research into Visiting Angels, I also discovered that it was not only the elderly population that needed help, but sometimes younger patients who were either disabled or had medical conditions which required extended social services also were in need of assistance. The model that Visiting Angels has developed over the last 18 years is a one-on-one caregiver situation. With Visiting Angels, the client is able to select their own personal caregiver. The services are provided in the privacy of the patientâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s own home, assisted living facility, or long-term care facility. The services provided by Visiting Angels include, in home senior care, assistance with mobility, light house keeping, assistance with dressing grooming and bathing, medication reminders, errands including doctors appointments, shopping and meal preparation. The flexibility of hourly care, daily care or live-in care is provided. by Lauren Joffrion As the year comes to an end, we look forward to those two major holidays and their traditional fare. You know — turkey, dressing, ham, green bean casserole, and festive, decorated Christmas cookies cut into a myriad of shapes. Now, don’t get me wrong, I love the traditional cuisine of the holidays, but what’s wrong with a little variation? Sometimes you just need a break from the classics, but we don’t have to completely break tradition. Instead, be creative and think outside of the traditional borders. If you love turkey, a garlic-herb stuffed turkey roulade (wrapped in bacon) could be a real game changer. It’s similar enough to feel familiar, but bold and sophisticated enough to satisfy even the most jaded palate. Sometimes the holiday table is more intimate and seats fewer guests. Instead of roasting a large turkey, roasting a turkey breast can satisfy your guests without putting a dent in the pocketbook. While cost is a huge factor during the holidays, “time” is another. For example, many of us spend the majority of the holiday in the kitchen, which limits our time visiting with loved ones. Well, you might ask, “How can I impress my guests AND still visit with them?” Prep ahead of time is the answer. Desserts and sides can be prepped early and served when the guests arrive. One of my alltime favorites is Stuffed Acorn Squash. You can easily prep the filling, early, and partially cook the squash. When the guests arrive, just simply 38

CORNBREAD AND SAUSAGE STUFFED TURKEY ROULADE (Serves 8) 2 boneless, skinless turkey breasts (about 3 1/2 - 4 lbs. each) 3 cups of crumbled cornbread (preferable slightly sweet) 2 Italian sausage links (casings removed) 1 shallot, finely minced ½ cup of unsalted chicken stock ¼ tsp. sage 1 Tbsp. of fresh, or dried thyme (stems removed) 2 Tbsp. of olive oil 2 Tbsp. of bacon fat Kosher salt and black pepper to taste Butcher’s twine 1. Preheat oven to 425 degrees. Fit a baking sheet with a wire rack to elevate the roulades from the baking rack (keeps bottoms from sticking/burning) 2. Remove the turkey breasts from the package and butterfly them. Cut just enough, but not all the way through, make it stuff the squash with the filling and bake! Time and money are not the only reasons why some families like to opt for a non-traditional holiday. Many look forward to the classic dishes, but who says you can’t break the rules a little? Holiday meals don’t have to be a certain way and they do not have to be what most consider traditional fare. Tradition is what is special to you and your family. Enjoy the company of your loved ones and friends while sharing great food. You can start new traditions and have your own special thing, or you can still take the classics and give them a modern and exciting twist! one flat piece. Cover each breast with plastic wrap and pound into a rectangle about 11” by 13”. Season with salt and pepper. 3. Start assembling the roulade filling by cooking and breaking up the sausage over medium heat. Cook until no longer pink. Add the shallots and cook until translucent. Add the spices and herbs. Then add the crumbled cornbread and chicken stock. Add more stock if needed, to reach the right consistency. You want the filling to be moist enough to stick together, but not too moist to where it falls apart. 4. Spread the filling onto each breast, equally, and press to ensure the filling remains in one place when it’s time to roll. Tightly roll the breast, while keeping the filling inside. Once rolled, secure each breast with butcher’s twine. Tuck the ends under (if possible) and tie the roll lengthwise with the twine. Then, use the twine to tie five ties across, perpendicular to the lengthwise tie. Repeat with second turkey breast. 5. Rub the roulades with olive oil and season with salt and pepper. Bake on the prepared baking sheet with elevated rack for 45 minutes, or until the meat thermometer reads 165 degrees F. During the last 10 minutes, brush the roulades with melted bacon fat. Insert the thermometer into the thickest part of the breast. Once done, tent with foil and let stand for 10 minutes before slicing.

RED WINE POACHED PEARS (Serves 4) 4 firm pears (preferably Bartlett or Green Anjou) 1 bottle of Cabernet Sauvignon ½ cup sugar, plus 1 Tbsp. 1 Tbsp. orange zest 1 point of star anise 2 cinnamon sticks 4 cloves 1 slice of fresh ginger

1.Peel the pears, sparing the stem. Be sure not to bruise them while peeling. Cut a little slice off of the bottoms so that they sit flat in the pot. 2. In a medium to large pot, combine the sugar, zest, spices, and wine. Boil and then reduce to a simmer. Add the peeled pears to the liquid, cover, and simmer for 20 minutes. Make sure to turn them every five minutes to ensure even saturation. After 20 minutes, remove the pot from the flame and let cool. 3. Cover the pot, leaving in the pears, and chill in fridge for about 4 hours. Turn occasionally, if desired. 4. When ready to serve, remove the pears and bring the liquid to a boil until it becomes thick and syrupy. Remove from flame and let cool for 10 minutes. Drizzle each pear with the reduced syrup and serve. For an extra touch, serve with whipped cream, if desired. STUFFED ACORN SQUASH (Serves 4) 2 acorn squash 5 Tbsp. butter 2 cups of wild rice (prepared) 1 large yellow onion (chopped) 6 mini portabella mushrooms (diced) 1 (16 oz.) tube of Jimmy Dean breakfast sausage 1 Tbsp. of fresh, or dried thyme ¼ tsp. red pepper flakes ¼ tsp. fennel Salt and pepper to taste 1. Preheat oven to 400 degrees. 2. Carefully cut the acorn squash in half, from the stem, making two identical halves, per squash. Add one tablespoon of butter to each half of squash and season with salt and pepper. 3. Place squash (cut side up) on a baking pan, put it in the oven, and bake for 40-45 minutes (should be fork tender). Using a pastry brush, brush the melted butter throughout the squash. Remove and let cool after baking. 4. Assemble filling by sautéing chopped onions and mushrooms in one tablespoon of butter. Once the onions are soft, add the sausage and cook all the way through. Break the sausage up into small pieces with the spoon. Once done, add the wild rice and spices. 5. Fill each squash with an equal amount of filling and then bake at 400 for an additional 5 minutes.

Pretty soon there will be tree lots everywhere, and in South Mississippi, we have a handful of Christmas tree farms where customers can pick out the perfect tree, cut it down or have it cut for them. If it’s the holidays and you have driven through Pass Christian, you probably have noticed Melanie Lynch’s colorful yard and home décor. Christmas is a very special time for Lynch and her family. In fact, every holiday is important because Lynch is all about preserving tradition. As an avid decorator, holidays throughout the year are given proper recognition with unique touches here and there inside and outside her home. And when it comes to decking the halls this season, the memories from her childhood come flooding back. “I remember watching my father, who had no patience whatsoever, spend countless hours unraveling the same old Christmas lights, changing out bad bulbs and taping wires back together to repair them rather than buy new ones,” Lynch says. “I love the decorating process, especially unwrapping and hanging the ‘special’ ornaments — the old glass ornaments that belonged to my father’s parents, the sequined ornaments handmade by my favorite Aunt, and the sterling ornaments sent to us by a family friend.” Lynch recommends enjoying the “things” of Christmas that “spark” memories of the past, as well as creating new memories such as remembering the faces of young children when they see all the presents and savoring the fun and laughter during meals. The birth of Christ, giving, receiving, decorating, cooking, making memories — that’s what Christmas means to the Lynch family.

Biloxi veteran still nurturing by Andrea Yeager & Dana Sleger When retired Col. Phyllis Luttman was only three years old, the dream of being a nurse was cultivated at a young age, especially since she was always the one bandaging her dog, sisters, brothers and neighbors. Little did she know that dream would eventually take her to Air Force bases from Texas to Turkey for special assignments few women were given. When looking back at her military career in the Air Force, there are many significant moments she is proud of, and her list of accolades prove it was a job well done. Decorations awarded include the Legion of Merit, Air Force Meritorious Service with two oak leaf clusters, the Joint Services Commendation Medal and the Air Force Commendation Medal. In addition, she also has received an Excellence in Medical Journalism award and was selected as a Fellow in the Aerospace Medical Association. Luttman was commissioned as a first lieutenant in 1960 after receiving her basic nursing education in New Jersey, and served on active duty for 30 years and in the Reserves for two years before retiring in 1993 from Keesler Air Force Base. During those years she earned her BS and Masters in nursing. Throughout her career, Luttman has been honored with many special assignments. She not only helped design the operating room portion of the air transportable 66

November-December 2017

hospitals now used worldwide, but in 1984, she was selected as a consultant and later as the chief consultant to the Air Force Surgeon General for Operating Room Nursing — a role she served in until retirement. As part of a two-person team, she also evaluated and medically accepted the new McDonald Douglas DC-9 flying hospital, the Nightingale, and flew as an advisor for Air Force Reserve aeromedical teams flying near offshore missions. “The military affords everyone vast opportunities in so many career fields,” says Luttman, who fell in love with Biloxi on her first assignment at Keesler Air Force Base. “When I was in Biloxi in 1970, my parents visited and were so impressed saying I should consider retiring here as they loved the area. Of course, I was far from retiring then,” she says. In 1985, she returned to Keesler and bought a house. At retirement, she knew the Coast was her home and became very active with the Red Cross on local and national levels. The honors also kept on coming. In 2013, she served as the grand marshall for the Gulf Coast Veterans Day Parade and last year she was selected as the Retired Military Senior Volunteer of the Year. At 82 years old, Luttman continues to serve on the board of directors for several organizations, including the Gulf Coast Veterans Day Parade and the Biloxi Bay Area Chamber of Commerce.

VANILLA CRANBERRY MIMOSA 1 1/2 ounces of vanilla flavored vodka 1 1/2 ounces of cranberry juice Sparkling wine OPTIONAL GARNISHES Fresh cranberries Whole vanilla beans In a cocktail shaker, combine the vanilla vodka, cranberry juice and ice. Shake vigorously, then strain into a champagne flute. Fill the glass to the top with sparkling wine. Garnish if desired. Pinterest source: Honey & Birch STRAWBERRY BELLINIS 2 cups frozen strawberries 1 cup water 2 Tbsp. granulated sugar Chilled champagne (or sparkling moscato) Fresh strawberries to garnish (optional) Combine the strawberries, water and sugar in a medium saucepan over low heat. Bring to a boil. To make a clearer syrup, remove the strawberries, and allow the syrup to cool completely. Otherwise, break up the strawberries with a fork and allow the syrup to boil for about three minutes over low heat, stirring often. Transfer to a blender, blend, and strain through a mesh strainer. For a cleaner syrup, strain through

Krewe of Salacia joining 2017-2018 Mardi Gras season by Andrea Yeager Salacia, the goddess of salt water and Neptune’s love, comes to live in human form as a new Mardi Gras krewe makes its Biloxi debut. The all-female krewe of Salacia is in its inaugural season and welcomes all Coast women. It’s not too late to get in on the fun; memberships still are being accepted. The brainchild of Coastian Chelie Strumila, the Krewe of Salacia will make its debut for the 2017-2018 Mardi Gras season with 80 krewe members. “We are a parading krewe,” Strumila says, who with her friend and co-captain Gretchen David, are heading up this new endeavor. “We are busy women who do not have time to go to rehearsals or have a large ball, but who want to participate in Mardi Gras. We will be parading with the Krewe of Neptune for our first couple of seasons until we secure our own floats.” What is more fitting than King Neptune and his wife Salacia coming back together for revelry? The night before Salacia rolls for the first time, they will celebrate with a party, and prior to the 5:30 p.m. parade on Saturday, Feb. 10, the krewe will host a queen’s breakfast. Then, it’s show time! “Our krewe is similar to the krewes of Muses and Nyx in New Orleans, also all-female parading krewes,” Strumila says. “I watched their parades and realized we needed a krewe like theirs on the Coast. Since I am busy with ‘Coast Observer,’ I haven’t been able to participate in the krewes that I was in. I just didn’t have the time, but wanted more than just watching the parades.” From these thoughts, Krewe of Salacia was born. Strumila knew the person she wanted to be her co-captain in this adventure — David, whose family has been involved with Mardi Gras for several decades. Nyx and Muses are made up of busy women, too, but they come together each year to create special throws for parade-goers. Muses throws hand-decorated shoes and Nyx, elaborate hand-beaded purses. Last year, Strumila caught one of the coveted throws and says it was a personal, almost spiritual, experience between float rider and herself. “She locked eyes with me and threw straight to me,” Strumila says. “It was two women connecting and sharing with one another.” Since Salacia is queen of the sea and represents the beautiful Gulf Coast, the Krewe of Salacia will be throwing hand-decorated bikini tops.

“These tops are lovely. Each member has to fashion 30 bikini tops,” Strumila says. “Of course, we will have other throws, too, but these tops will be our signature, thrown especially for the person who catches it.” On Feb. 10, the Krewe of Salacia will ride and hear the cries, “Throw me a bikini top, Mistress.” If Salacia sounds like fun, check out kreweofsalacia.com/ membership. hen I learned the burger I was about to eat at Eat Drink Love Catering had blueberry pepper jam on it, I have to admit I wasn’t sure what to expect. Turns out, it was so good that I came back the next day for another! Although Eat Drink Love Catering began three years ago as a corporate catering business in an Ocean Springs doctor’s office complex, earlier this year it moved to a storefront restaurant inside a boutique hotel, The Roost. Owners, Lauren and Seth Braden, and their staff have been wowing customers ever since with a unique menu that always has fresh ingredients and homemade components. “We wanted to expand and have a space where we can actually enjoy our customers instead of them walking out the door and taking it home,” Lauren says. “We wanted to do it family style with big tables to have people come together. We like it because someone will end up coming in for lunch by themselves and they’ll end up sitting with six other people, chit-chatting and staying for two hours.” Their ever-changing menu is written in chalk on three wall plaques showcasing small bites, sandwiches, salads, lunch specials, take-and-bake freezer items, and my personal favorite, the charcuterie tray, which includes seasonal meats, fruits and cheeses. Vegetables and specialty meats are cut every day and contain no additives or fillers, and they make their own sauces in-house and try to keep everything as affordable as possible for customers. If you are in the mood for a salad, they have a variety of options such as the “Signature House Salad,” which comes with feta, red onion, tomato, cucumber, artichoke hearts and a house balsamic, or the “Power Salad,” which

includes feta, artichoke hearts, cranberries, pecans, avocado, red onion and balsamic. Grilled chicken or seared salmon can be added to either one, and the house chicken salad also is an extremely popular menu choice as well. Their small bites offerings includes a turnip green and artichoke dip, as well as a fantastic shrimp scampi dip made with local Gulf shrimp, garlic, bread crumbs, butter, red chili flakes and Parmesan cheese. Both are complemented with crusty baguette slices. Sandwiches come with organic chips and freshly made chocolate chip oatmeal or white chocolate cranberry cookies. I will warn you in advance that it will be hard to choose from their pesto turkey wrap, a pimento grilled cheese, a roast beef baguette made with honey horseradish and provolone, or the ham and Brie with caramelized onion or peach jam. The 100 percent grass-fed beef burgers served on a jalapeño cheese bread bun also are a standout. I opted for a burger special they were serving that came with spring mix, Brie and blueberry pepper jelly. ed is the most popular color for fall fashion and holiday attire this year. While I am covering stores along the Coast, I’m also finding a lot of colorful floral patterns. Also, would you believe bell bottoms are back this year? I wore a pair during a shoot recently and so many people stopped me to ask where they could find them. Though fall has officially arrived, South Mississippi weather can remain somewhat warm. That’s why incorporating a cardigan over any outfit can give everyone the opportunity to prepare for a much anticipated cool front. In addition, I picked up on the newest West Coast fashion trends while living and working in television in Los Angeles. My favorite is the all-purpose classic staple: the

black leather jacket. Black can go with any outfit, whether you are wearing a colorful dress or some edgy leggings. Wearing high black boots with the leather jacket can create the perfect fall outfit! Pairing these outfits with accessories and a backpack can complete a new fall look. As for me, I wear a black backpack everywhere I go — it’s definitely another fashion staple. I learned that tip and more from my sister, Kelli Seymour, a nationally renowned fashion model who lives in Los Angeles. Kelli always says, “Be comfortable, but confident. When you feel good about what you wear, then it doesn’t matter if you are dressed in a name brand outfit or wearing sweat pants, just be sure to rock it!”

If you’re looking for a cool place to shop for that special guy in your life, there’s a “brotique” in Long Beach called The Dapper Pig. This place has everything to stock up and style up a male wardrobe from head to toe! In addition to flip-flops, casual and dressy footwear and a handsome selection of clothing, customers can peruse a wide range of accessories such as bow ties, neckties, suspenders, pocket squares, bracelets, cufflinks and loads of socks. For the bearded fellows, high-grade shaving equipment like badger-hair shaving brushes and straight razors are available, as well as beard combs, oil, wash and shaving cream that are all natural and locally made products. John Huntoon, owner, opened the men’s apparel and gift shop last year after being inspired by a personal experience that left him in a bit of a fashion quandary. “I had already looked at the space for rent and had been mulling the idea around a couple days when one morning I broke my leather flip-flops,” Huntoon says. “After driving around all afternoon to different places, I got really frustrated about not being able find a good pair at a decent price. So in a spiteful frustration, I decided to just do it myself.” Consider the busted flip-flops a blessing in disguise because when doors officially opened before Father’s Day last year, Huntoon was overwhelmed by the positive reception he received for his “out-of-the-box” brotique idea. He describes the shop’s clothing style as “brunch to beach.” “Things bought here can be worn to brunch at Chimney’s with 80

the family and then walk across Hwy. 90 to the beach with your family and still be comfortable and stylish,” Huntoon says. “I don’t carry any brands that can be found anywhere else around here. I carry smaller brands and start-ups as a way to lower competition and to provide men with something fresh that’s not at the mall. At my shop, I provide my customers a way to dress well, to dress affordable and to stand apart.” Other popular items include Platini 24k cologne (free samples available) and a nice selection of “Dude. Candles.” — 100 percent soy scented candles for men with scents like leather and whiskey. So how about that name? Well, The Dapper Pig got its start from a short-lived blog Huntoon started in 2015 and he credits his buddy, Trae Guin, for coining the rather genius “brotique” term. Huntoon says his goal is not only to give customers a personal experience with good service in a classy, aesthetic atmosphere, but also allow for men to feel good about themselves when wearing quality and stylish attire. “My passion in this industry comes from helping people, and I do that with my clothes,” Huntoon says. A visit to the spa is just not what is used to be, and that’s good news for you! The menu of services has grown exponentially over the years to accommodate a variety of needs that are not only physically beneficial for muscles in need of some TLC, but also therapeutic for your skin, mind and soul. INCONTINENCE? Various treatments available

It is rare that I meet a woman who does not feel guilty doing something just for her, especially when there are children to care for, a home to be maintained and bills to pay. However, it’s critical we do not put our health last — routine annual exams with your doctor are not luxuries, but necessities. Health and joy are priceless, and this leads me to a topic some women choose not to discuss often and I hope to change that. Stress Urinary Incontinence is a frustrating and an embarrassing problem for millions of females. So what is this exactly? If you leak urine when you sneeze, cough, laugh, jump, run, jog or lift something heavy, this is considered Stress Urinary Incontinence, otherwise known as SUI. It will affect your daily life from work and exercise to intimacy and your social life. Not knowing if, when or where you might have an “accident” changes one’s decision to go to an event or just stay home. Conservative treatments such as pelvic floor muscle therapy (Kegel exercises) often fail because of a patient’s lack of compliance, but when combined with laser treatment, the outcome is wonderful! Surgical options, although effective, can have adverse effects and are typically a patient’s last resort when all other options have lacked in relief, enhancement or correction. Connective tissue in the vaginal walls is an important factor in pelvic organ support. Weight gain, pregnancies, vaginal childbirths or injury can weaken the muscles and tissue associated with the bladder. Remember, we begin losing collagen in our 20s in the entire body so age also can play a role with SUI. If we don’t stimulate what collagen you have, the only options long term will be surgery. SUI is the most common form of incontinence, but when you have the need to urinate and can’t make it to the bathroom in time, this is called Urge Incontinence. In this case you may leak large amounts of urine with this type of incontinence, and in social situations, women with both forms must always be aware of where bathrooms are and ease of access. Overactive bladder is the sudden, frequent need to urinate. Instead of leaking, the problem for these women is they often have to stop what they are doing to go to the bathroom. Incontinence can be a burden to those experiencing this medical condition. Research shows women with incontinence have a less active sex life and a higher level of depression than women with healthy bladders. The good news is women no longer have to accept this inconvenience because it can be managed or reversed. Products 86

like panty liners, pads, adult diapers or plastic coated underwear can help one feel more comfortable and confident in public. Medications, injections (Botox), lasers or surgery are used to help control incontinence. No one wants wet clothes in public and there are so many options available to help avoid this situation. Getting an annual exam and discussing this topic with your doctor will assist in guiding you to what form of treatment is best for you. The first step is to see your doctor or seek out a doctor for a proper diagnosis of the type of incontinence you have (medical tests and an exam will be conducted and your medical history will be collected). More doctors are recommending Laser Vaginal Rejuvenation for atrophy, painful sex, vaginal dryness, burning and recurrent yeast infections due to dryness and women who are contraindicated for hormone replacement therapy. Laser treatments also are an exciting option for pre- and postmenopausal women with incontinence. It’s effective, safe, non-invasive, painless, no medications or anesthesia is needed, and there is zero to minimal down time. Ninety-four percent of women report improvement after 120 days, and on average, 68 percent and more report to be free of SUI symptoms. Each laser is unique and will treat differently, but the goal for lasers that treat incontinence is Collagen NeoGenesis, which is the shrinking and tightening of the vaginal mucosa tissue. Collagen rich endopelvic facia will provide greater support to the bladder, less leakage and aid in the return of normal continence function. It also provides enhanced lubrication, more comfortable intercourse and stronger orgasm due to the tightening/ rejuvenation of the vaginal tissue. Talk to your doctor and he/she will guide you to see if you are a candidate for laser treatment. Laser Vaginal Rejuvenation does not have a CPT billing code as of yet and is not covered by insurance. Thanksgiving and Christmas can be a stressful, emotional roller coaster! There’s the uphill ride with joy and fun celebrating the season with family and friends, and then a downhill ride of sad memories from the past. When combined with the financial and time burden of buying gifts, food and socializing, it can be a difficult season for many people. The following tips can help make this time of year more enjoyable. TIME Make time to be with people you love by doing some of the preparation together. Meet up to write greeting cards, wrap gifts, bake cookies and shop or make gifts. BUDGET Set a budget for gifts, food and outings to avoid the dreaded January credit card statement. An automatic deposit into a Christmas Club account is the easiest way. SIMPLIFY GIFT GIVING If you have a large family or a large group consider drawing names from a hat to buy only one gift of a designated value. Another option could be to only give gifts to the children or do Kris Kringle or Dirty Santa where everyone gives/receives one gift. You can also show love with homemade arts, crafts, foods, recipe ingredients in a decorated jar, personalized gift certificates for outings, movie, car wash, housework, yard work, etc. Be creative! Remember to have a few extra gifts on hand for unexpected guests, such as locally made soaps, jams from a farmer’s market, wine, chocolates and gift cards. MEALS Make hosting the meal enjoyable by keeping it simple with a buffet or potluck. Buy as much as possible in advance and store items for each recipe together, yet separate from the pantry to avoid it being used beforehand. Make a written timetable of all the tasks required on the day: when to put the turkey and casseroles in the oven, set the table, make the gravy, etc. Do accept help from others! EMOTIONS Anxiety and depression is more prevalent this time of the year. Don't expect all family members to mingle and avoid discussing subjects that may create conflict. THE AGING NECK: What to do?

To understand how the neck ages, we first need to understand the basic anatomy of the neck. Ideally, the profile of the neck has a nice cervical mental angle. As we age, the skin, the muscle of the neck (platysma) and the fat in between the skin can affect the neck profile. When treating the skin of the neck, particularly with sun damage, discoloration and fine lines, a resurfacing laser such as the Fraxel can help improve and diminish the surface irregularities in the neck. At some point in life, everyone can benefit from resurfacing the skin of the neck. A relatively new treatment for excess submental fat is Kybella. An FDA approved injectable drug that permanently dissolves fat. Patients usually need two to three treatments six weeks apart. The procedure is done in the office with no downtime. Since no surgery is needed, this is an excellent choice for fat reduction/removal. Laser liposuction can also be used as a single, outpatient surgery to remove fat, and also will tighten skin mildly. Some downtime is necessary for the bruising and swelling to dissipate. As we age, especially in women ages 38 and up, the platysma muscle bands can become more prominent. These can be softened and improved by a Botox treatment, which will relax the muscle. As the skin and the platysma muscle start to demonstrate farther laxity or “sag,” use of a skin tightening device called Ulthera becomes an option. Ulthera uses ultrasonic waves to heat the dermis of the skin and fascia covering of the platysma muscle of the neck. This heating will allow for tightening of both layers. Although usually a single treatment works, if repeated appropriately, results can demonstrate cumulative improvement. Ulthera has mild discomfort and no downtime. For necks demonstrating greater laxity, a more aggressive skin tightening treatment may be needed such as ThermiTight. This device offers the newest technology using radiofrequency to heat the under surface of the skin by inserting a thin probe beneath the skin by the surgeon. Treatment includes the jowls at the jawline and the entire frontal neck, and this minimally invasive procedure is performed in the office. The area to be treated is anesthetized and a special thin probe is placed beneath the skin through a small one millimeter incision. The undersurface of the skin is gently heated to optimal temperature to maximize the collagen and elastin regrowth and tighten the skin. During the entire process, the area November-December 2017

treated is monitored both internally and externally with an infrared military grade camera. This allows for exact control of the heating process and maximizes the skin tightening. ThermiTight is the most aggressive option before one considers surgery. Individually, there may be one to two days of downtime. ThermiTight is the last step to consider before surgical neck lift or face and neck lift. For advanced laxity of the skin, muscle and excessive fat in the older patient, a traditional neck lift, usually combined with face lift, will maximize your results and is still the “gold” standard. Depending on the results and budget, there is a procedure that can be tailored to your individual needs. Additionally, different treatments can be combined to maximize the result. MONEY Minimize your 2017 taxes while you still can by Tina Perkins

Procrastinate no more. By the time you read this article you might have two months to squeeze in tax planning and to carry out your action plan to minimize your 2017 taxes. Tax planning isn’t just for the wealthy. Tax planning is for everyone who wants to keep more of their earnings and net worth and pay as little as possible to the government. Below are some opportunities worth considering. INDIVIDUAL TAXPAYER Should you itemize your deductions or take the standard deduction? Knowing what your 2017 tax situation will be and having an idea of your 2018 tax situation, you are better informed to decide if you should maximize your 2017 itemize deductions or push these deductions into 2018. For instance, you may find it better to: (1) suspend your 2017 charitable contributions and double up on your 2018 charitable contributions; and/or (2) pay your 2017 real property taxes in early 2018 before the due date and then pay the 2018 real property taxes before December 31, 2018. This works really well if you are borderline not able to itemize or if your tax bracket for 2017 is lower than your 2018. INVESTOR Is the investor better off selling his investment property in 2017 or in 2018? Accelerate the sale of a capital gain investment in 2017 if you already have a capital loss on the books. Your capital losses offset your capital gains. Also, sell in 2017 if you are in the 15 percent or lower tax bracket, are expecting to be in a higher tax bracket for 2018, and would create a long-term capital gain on your investment sale. Your taxes would be zero on this sale. In contrast, sell your investment in 2018 if you expect to be in the 15 percent tax bracket for 2018 and are in a higher bracket for 2017. If the sale of your investment creates a capital loss, you want to sell in the year that you are in the higher tax bracket. SMALL BUSINESS OWNER (SOLE PROPRIETOR) Know the financial status of your business! Proprietors pay a 15.3 percent self-employment tax in addition to the income taxes on the net profits. Take advantage of the section 179 deduction by making major purchases before year end. This can have a major impact to lowering your taxes. Also, fund your retirement. Although the proprietor has until the filing of his tax return to fund his retirement, he has to have the simple retirement plan in place by October 1. Retirement contributions will reduce your income taxes but not your selfwww.gcwmultimedia.com

employment tax. In summary, get your business affairs in order and meet with your tax professional before the year ends while opportunities are available. Seek the advice of an investment advisor for creating your retirement plan.

RETIRED TAXPAYER Contributions and earnings to a qualified retirement plan eventually become subjected to income taxes. This is also true for the earnings of a non-qualified plan. A retiree should evaluate his situation to see if taking (or increasing) a distribution would be tax efficient. In a recent evaluation of an 80-plus year person’s annuity plan, I learned that he wants to leave his $40,000 annuity to his adult son. Of the $40,000, the earnings of $15,000 are going to be taxed to whoever receives the earnings. If the retiree’s wish is fulfilled and his son inherits it, the son will pay tax at his marginal rate on the $15,000. The son will pay $2,250 or $3,750 if in the 15 percent or 25 percent respective tax brackets. If instead, the retiree takes the $15,000 earnings over a two year period, he could avoid paying taxes altogether since his sources of income from a small pension and social security aren’t enough for him to have a tax liability. He should then put the distributed funds into another investment and make his son the beneficiary. Upon the retiree’s passing, the son receives the entire $40,000 tax free, satisfying his dad’s wish. RETIREMENT CONTRIBUTOR You are never too young to make retirement contributions. In fact, the earlier you start contributing, the better. You may feel that you are too poor to contribute to a retirement. I will admit, it is difficult at times to sock away money that you need today. However, the government gives you a tax credit for retirement contributions if you qualify. Qualifications are: Age 18 or older; not a full-time student; not claimed as a dependent on another person’s return The credit is 50 percent, 20 percent and 10 percent of your contributions up to $2,000/person depending on your adjusted gross income, which must be at or below the following amounts: $62,000 – Married Filing Jointly; $45,750 – Head of Household; $30,500 – Single or Married Filing Separately. Tax planning works. These and other tax planning opportunities can gain you more after-tax dollars. Remember that everyone’s tax situation is different and the tax impact would likewise be different. In addition, tax reform could negate benefits planned for future years. You should talk with your tax advisor about your personal tax situation. Medicare is the governmental health insurance program, which, from 1966, has been a single-payer, national social insurance program providing coverage for most Americans of retirement age, disabled and other groups. It has been estimated that Medicare spending accounts for about 15 to 16 percent of the total U.S. federal spending. On average, Medicare covers about half of the health care charges for those enrolled, with the remaining costs either paid out of the individual’s pocket or with supplemental insurance — sometimes called Medigap policies. While campaigning, most politicians have promised to “not cut Medicare.” There are many ways, however, that

premiums and reduce the 20 percent co-pays and deductibles associated with original Medicare Part A, B and D; but, the services covered may be more limited than what you would receive under traditional Medicare Part A, B or D. Medicare Plan F was developed as a Medicare supplement insurance plan to cover costs known as Medicare Part B excess charges (Please note that Plan F does not cover dental, vision, or prescription medicine, and so enrollees are still responsible for paying those costs out of pocket.). The excess charge is the difference between what a doctor or provider charges and the amount Medicare will pay. Plan F provides “first dollar” coverage for all the “gaps,” meaning that from the first day, Medigap Plan F covers the 20 percent co-pay and your hospital and outpatient deductibles. So, this plan would provide zero “out-of-pocket” expenses for the enrollee at the doctor’s office at the time of service for the services covered. (Note that services covered may be more limited than under traditional Medicare Parts A, B and D). It is reported that about 53 percent of people who buy Medigap supplements choose Plan F or Plan C. Plan F is the most popular of the many Medigap insurance plans because it is the most comprehensive. In 2020, however, the government plans to close Plan F and Plan C to new participants. If you are not already on Plan F or Plan C by 2020, you will not be able to buy it. On the other hand, if you are already on Plan F or Plan C when 2020 rolls

around, then you won’t be kicked off your coverage. You’ll be grandfathered into the plan if you choose to keep that plan past 2020. People eligible for Medicare after 2020 will not have this same right, but they can enroll in Medigap Plans D or G going forward. Plan G will be created as a new high-deductible plan and made available for both newly eligible enrollees and previously eligible applicants who select it. Obviously, under such a plan, it will be necessary for the retirees to have financial resources available to cover “out-of-pocket,” the high deductibles before Medicare will provide coverage. Therefore, it appears that if you are not grandfathered in before 2020, you will not have access to Plan F that was previously available to help with the predictability and controllability of your medical expenses by paying a set premium to cover the deductible and co-pay amounts. Altering the Medicare plans available may be the same as an invisible benefit reduction to people who do not read the fine print. Frankly, my dear, you should read the fine print.
