Bridget Turan founded the event as director of the Gulf Coast HUB for Volunteers and Nonprofits. Today, as community leader and volunteer with WOW Women of Wisdom Inc., she is carrying forward her passion project, which has continued to grow each year and always falls on the Friday before the Sept. 11 commemoration. When the initiative to feed local first responders started, one Gulfport city agency was served; this year’s event on Sept. 9 is set to reach over 25 city agencies serving close to 60 individual stations in three “Icounties.havenearly 100 volunteers on standby by now waiting to see how they can help,” Turan says.
At this annual celebration of seafood heritage, attendees will enjoy live entertainment, arts and crafts, kids’ activities and the best seafood on the Mississippi Gulf Coast. For the third year, the 100 Men Hall will host Booker Fest, a musical celebration honoring the genius of James Booker. The weekend will include a night with Joe Krown Trio, a morning gospel tribute by St. Rose gospel choir, a piano tribute to Booker led by two of New Orleans piano greats, Josh Paxton and Joe Ashlar, followed by spoken word artist Sunni Patterson, then the award-winning voice of Quiana Lynell and her band and a good time with comedian Rita Brent — all while screening Lily Keber’s acclaimed documentary on Booker, “Bayou Maharajah.” The festivities end with an outrageous drag brunch by Catastrophe, Zamareyah, Latonia and Misty in Booker’s honor. If attendees get hungry, they can buy food from a delicious lineup of food trucks planned for the weekend. “Growing up, medicine was something that was constantly talked about in my family,” said Emily. “There never was a point in my life where it wasn’t brought up at least once at the dinner table.”
Fite gives complete credit to her late husband, Dr. James W. Fite, for the family’s legacy in the medical field.
“Medicine is a calling, and his patients always came first,” she said. “Family waited in line but was never last. I was an Associate Degree R.N. when we met, and throughout our 47 years together (44 married) he encouraged and supported both my educational advancement and careerRegardlesschoices.”ofhow

“My mother put herself through nursing school at a community college not only to help patients, but to change family legacy,” said Rana. “She instilled in me the love of helping people through health care and education.”
When Emily Walley walked across the stage at MGCCC’s graduation on May 12, 2022, she became the third generation of women in her family to earn a degree in health care. What’s even more special about this achievement is that her new degree in Medical Laboratory Technology gave her an opportunity to spend more time with her mom, Dr. Rana Walley, who serves as the Medical Laboratory Technology program director as well as an instructor in the program.

Emily explained, “I’ve known since I was little I wanted to be a doctor, but the great thing about that is no one forced me. It was never said that I had to be. I was just blessed with such an interest and deep understanding at a young age that it stuck with me.”
Her decision to go into the medical field was less of a decision and more of an inevitability.
“I know it’ll be work, but to be that one doctor who makes a difference in a child’s life is something I will always strive to achieve,” Emily said.
Rana couldn’t be prouder and more excited for her daughter. “I find comfort in knowing that my daughter chose a career in health care as well,” she said. “At 19, she is already working in a lab part time earning a good wage while she continues pursuing higher education.”

Instead, friends and family surprised the 46-year medical professional with a celebration to mark her 30th anniversary at Merit Health. Initially, Tremmel thought the fete just consisted of cake and photos in the breakroom until Biloxi Mayor FoFo Gilich showed up with a proclamation and declared it was “Ira Fay Day.”“I’ve been so happy and so blessed,” Tremmel says of her career. “I told my children, ‘I don’t care if you’re a ditch digger, as long as you’re happy and doing it.’ I guess I knew I wanted to do something in health care, and I fell in the right way.”
Tremmel also has served as an emergency room nurse and director at Merit Health Biloxi. She has won numerous awards, including Nurse of the Year in 1997 and 2003.
Tremmel does not plan to ever truly retire. She said she wants to volunteer in the health care field once her nursing career ends and continue to help people.
Commitment to caring
The proclamation declared Tremmel a superb nurse and excellent contributor with the highest level of “Patientsprofessionalism.inhercare immediately recognize their caregiver really cares about them and what happens to them,” Gilich said of his childhood friend. Tremmel and Gilich have known each other since the 1960s.
She showed her loyalty and dedication to the community and her healthcare career by staying in town to help during Hurricane Katrina in 2005. She also has worked throughout the COVID-19 global pandemic.

IRA FAY TREMMEL HONORED FOR 30 YEARS OF SERVICE WITH MERIT HEALTH
ra Fay Tremmel thought she’d go to work at Merit Health in Biloxi on Aug. 3 and spend the day, like she does most others, fulfilling her role as the employee health nurse.
“We grew up together, literally,” Gilich said. “I graduated in 1965. She graduated in 1967. We were all roller skating together.”
And she’s not stopping there.
“Everybody that walks through the door, we make them feel valued.”
The last remaining location, a downtown Biloxi landmark at the corner of Lameuse Street and Howard Avenue, was set to close its doors as of Aug. 31. Owner and manager Sandra Cannette says reactions from the community have ranged from sadness to disbelief.
Cannette also has received many congratulations as she wraps up her 43 years at Ellzey’s and concentrates on her family. The 65-year-old is looking forward to spending time with her new grandchild.“Additionally, I have survived cancer and the death of one of my children; I know how precious life is and how quickly it can change,” she says. “It is time for me to focus on my personal life.”

“It was like a mercantile or general store,” Ellzey says. “They had a post office there; they sold TVs; they sold appliances; they sold bb guns. It was general merchandise then.”

Ellzey’s Hardware had a motto, says sales associate Dena Ellzey, it would be “Service with a smile.”
“I was 12 at the time, and I remember realizing that working in the store was what I wanted to do for my profession,” Cannette says. “I loved the sense of helpfulness — serving others and aiding them gave me joy. There’s nothing like helping someone with their current project, puzzle or predicament.”
“Everyone who walks through that door is important to us, whether you have on rags or whether you have on a business suit,” says Ellzey, who has worked at the store since retiring from Biloxi Public Schools in 2005.

went on to attend Millsaps College on academic scholarship, where he majored in Biochemistry. He graduated summa cum laude with honors in May 2022 and obtained a Bachelor of Science Degree, having a perfect all-A academic career through high school and college and having passed his final comprehensive examination in biochemistry “with excellence.” His honors thesis (Synthesis of an Allosteric HIV Integrase Inhibitors based on a Pyridine Pharmacohire) was presented during his Senior year and was eventually published.
Christopher attended Bayou View Elementary and Middle Schools and graduated from Gulfport High School in 2018 with a 3.9 GPA and class rank of 5/375. While at Gulfport High School, he served as Student Body President, President of the Interact and Spanish Clubs, Vice-President of the National Honor Society and Key Club. He was a 4-year letterman on the GHS varsity men’s soccer team. In his Senior year, Christopher was selected as Co-Team Captain, and went on to win the MHSAA State Championship, was voted Most Valuable Player and received the Ray Bishop Award for the highest GPA. He was also selected to the State Association of Coaches Varsity Boys All-Star South Team and the Region 6A Varsity Team. He served on the City of Gulfport Mayor’s Youth Council and was selected to attend the Rotary Youth Leadership Awards (RYLA), where he later was chosen to serve as a counselor from 2018-2022. Christopher began playing organized soccer, his favorite sport, at age four (4) with the Roadrunners rec team and played on numerous select soccer teams with the South Mississippi Soccer Club through his freshman year in college, during which time his select teams won five (5) State Championships. He developed many valuable friendships across the State and the southeast through this sport, including through his five-time selection to the Mississippi Olympic Development team for his age group.
Christopher was also an Eagle Scout, an accomplishment of which he was extremely proud. He was named a State Finalist for the Wendy’s High School Heisman. He was also named “Mr. Interact – Best Overall Male” and Exchange Club Student of the Year for the State of Mississippi in his Senior year and awarded the Samsung Scholarship Award for Mississippi. He was inducted into the Gulfport High School Hall of Fame. He enjoyed playing the piano, the violin, and the guitar as well as running, playing soccer tennis, and being with his family and Christophercats.
While in College, he was a four (4) year starter on the Varsity Men’s Soccer Team, two (2) year Senator in the Student Body Association, a member of the Sigma Alpha Epsilon Fraternity, President of the Millsaps College Republicans, and a member of the Millsaps Rotaract Club. While in college, and among other awards, he received the Joseph B. Price General Chemistry Award (for the highest GPA in chemistry), the Charles A. Preuss Pre-Medical Scholarship (SAE National Foundation), the Physics Service Award, and the Chemistry Research Award. He was a member of the Omicron Delta Kappa, Sigma Lambda, Alpha Epsilon Delta, and Beta Beta Beta honoraries, and was one of a few from the College tapped into the Phi Beta Kappa Society, the oldest and most prestigious academic honorary in the country. He was further selected into the Mississippi Rural Physicians Scholarship Program and was accepted into Medical School at the University of Mississippi Medical Center, with his medical school career set to commence August 2022. Christopher and his family are life-long members of St. James Catholic Church in Gulfport.

CHRISTOPHER THOMAS BRUNI, age 22, loving son of Jeff and Angela Bruni, unexpectedly passed away on July 31, 2022. He was born on June 19, 2000, in Gulfport, HeMississippi.issurvived
He especially loved a cat that was found decrepit and oddly named “Betty Ford,” who he referred to as “his girl,” and “Thanos,” who became the frat cat since it ended up living in his room the last couple of years of college and thus was his study buddy.
I trust in the fact knowing that Christopher touched so many of you and you all have many fond memories of him that could fill up a thousand days we wish he had. But, if you will bear with me, I’d like to share a little about ChristopherTiffy.

Soccer and Tiffy were a dangerous mixture at times, though. Those who saw him play know what I’m talking about – with his notorious slide tackles, jersey tugs – uh, pulls, and such. And, yes, there were some yellow cards.
Tiffy was also an overachiever. Growing up in a family with siblings who seemed to accomplish everything there was, motivated him to want to beat the family standard. He made the highest ACT score in the family. He became the only Eagle Scout. He was the only one who won a state championship in high school. He played soccer in college while making all-A’s as a biochemistry major. He was the only one selected into Phi Beta Kappa. And on and on. He used his siblings’ achievements to serve as base lines for him to surpass.
– Tiffy – was a lot of things to a lot of people growing up. According to his siblings, they thought he was a brown-noser. He would randomly tell his mom all the time how beautiful she was and how she was the best mom ever no matter how she looked. One might think he was definitely a schmoozer and to his siblings, this is what it seemed. However, Tif was truly compassionate and kind at heart. He told his Mom these things not only because he believed them but more importantly because he wanted someone he cared for to feel good. To this end, he was also a hugger. He wanted and gave hugs for everything. Still to this day, whenever he left the house, there was a hug event involved.
His affinity toward relationships and dealing with people later led him to choose a career in the medical field.
It’s fairly common that the younger child tends to get more lax treatment in the household. And Christopher’s siblings always complained of that.

On behalf of Christopher’s entire family, Angela, Catie Lee, Jeff, and I want to thank each of you for coming today to express your love for Christopher and our family. As I look out today, I see past teammates, former classmates in grade school, high school, and college, former teachers, professors, and mentors, former administrators, and relatives and friends. The loss of any life is tragic and Christophersorrowful.

While Christopher was not necessarily a “soft” person, he was still very compassionate, sensitive, and sentimental.
He was so proud of leading a group of teammates to the State Championship in his Senior year at Gulfport High School. The comradery that was established on that team meant as much to him as it did to win the State Title. And he really took to fostering the younger players on the team. He relished the role as serving as a team leader and a role model. He embraced leadership. He had the same love and compassion for his many select soccer teams and his teammates on these teams as well and for his college team at Millsaps. He used to tell us how he grew in perspective after seasons had passed so that he better appreciated what he had previously experienced the older he grew. And he missed his teammates and always talked about past games and events like they happened yesterday. But as he confided in us, he enjoyed soccer because he saw it as the celebration of a group seeking to collectively achieve goals. He did not gravitate toward individual sports but instead flourished in a game dependent upon relationships –relationships with teammates.
Tif also loved to mentor others. He did this in his academic career as a tutor and teaching assistant in college, in school soccer as a teammate and captain, in Boy Scouts and school clubs and student organizations through various leadership roles, and at several different camps as a counselor, such as at his beloved Rotary Youth Leadership Awards summer sessions. Last night alone we received several testimonials from those who expressed appreciation for his mentorship and sincerity in helping with their well-being. In fact, several friends traveled over 7 hours one way to attend visitation last night because of the impressions he had left on them. Anyone who knew Christopher knew he was absolutely passionate in anything he did. You could see this in music – with his piano, violin, and guitar. This was evidenced in his academics – with his All-A

When his brother and he would show up for a college class wearing the same exact shirt or outfit (unplanned), this became known as “8 a.m.” since more than likely these were occurring in 8 a.m. classes. So now, thanks to Tiffy, whenever any of us show up wearing the same things, we’re “8 a.m.’ing.”
His proclivity for misfortunes won him the name in the family as “danger prone Daphne,” which of course he shortened to simply DPD. For those unfamiliar with Scooby Doo, you probably have no idea what I’m referring to. Tripping over random curbs, randomly falling down on a soccer field but fracturing his wrist. After that, no matter how it happened or what it involved, everything became DPD - Food rolling off his plate, an open pen falling on his pants - DPD. There was the time when he accidentally burned the shoelaces off a new pair of Nikes in biochemistry lab in college……….DPD.
If you knew Tif, you knew he had a sense of quick wit and humor about him. And he would have always something to say that would end in a smile and laughter. As some of you have related, his smile was warm and inviting and his laugh Christophercontagious. was definitely not a quitter, and would not surrender no matter the cause. He could never see defeat even when others viewed it as inevitable. I know this often drove his soccer teammates crazy. This is what makes this news and our presence here today the more shocking. This mantra became prevalent in his academic pursuits, his pursuits on the soccer field, and in furtherance of his passion for research. He was relentless in his pursuits, a task master. He stayed on top of things. He completed his college career graduating summa

My only fear here today is that I could not do justice enough for Christopher and to speak on his behalf and about God’s works through him. But I have leaned on Christ’s strength to help me through this.
Growing up, Tiffy was also known for some crazy sayings, what we’ve called “Tiffyisms.” His first spoken word was “beyond,” which he attained from the original Buzz Lightyear movie (Toy Story). He loved that character. In fact, when we took photos – and we loved to take those – he would always say “cheese, beyond!” Tif also was the author of some clever sayings. In those early days, he would tell us – following dinner – that he was “always hungry after a big meal.”

But Tif didn’t let the fact that Angela and I didn’t attempt to motivate him or push him like we did his older siblings to give him an opportunity to become lax or lazy. He would constantly ask me to work with him so that he could run faster than Bud, his brother. On weekends, he would pull me out of the house to go work on his soccer skills. He wanted to juggle the soccer ball more than anyone else, and he spent hours in the back yard perfecting his skills. Tif enjoyed doing homework independently without help from any of us. But if I happened to review what he wrote, I was amazed how it was written with such clarity and originality. And he could express himself in writing wonderfully. I only wish I had that talent.
What in the world? However, he used this crazy statement to try and coax Angela or me into giving him dessert. As he got older, he became the expert of acronyms. He had an acronym for everything. I think he did this to get the usual response back from me asking what in the world he was saying. He was a trickster and had a sense of humor about him.
I doubt any one of us would have ever thought that the legacy Christopher would leave on this planet would be anything short of having a significant positive impact in our communities. Some candles are not meant to burn as bright or as tall or as consistently. But while the wick of Tiffy’s candle may have been too short, it was one that put off a strong and vibrant light. We can look around this morning’s congregation to see glimpses of what his light touched. His impact was pervasive and hopefully lasting.

“Some of my most significant challenges were the housing market crash in 2008 through 2010, followed by the BP oil spill, and working my way through a highly aggressive housing market,” McDougall recalls. “Over the years, many of my most outstanding rewards have been the relationships I’ve made and the individuals I have been able to help throughout my real estate career.”
“The historical homes that I grew up seeing line the beachfront were gone; the neighborhoods and homes of friends and family were torn away,” she recalls. “I felt it as a duty to my ‘home’ and my fellow coast residents to help, love and give back after seeing the impact of this natural disaster.”McDougall and her husband, Nathan, started buying and rehabbing investment properties in 2006 – putting her on the front lines of the region’s revitalization efforts. The storm allowed her to grasp what “depressed territory” really meant, and she witnessed how the area’s residential environment had been reshaped.
Over the course of 15 years, McDougall has guided several hundred clients as they began the next chapter in their lives. Through all the turbulence, she says, “My passion and love for ‘my Coast’ has brightened the horizon and allowed me to see the shore ahead.”

I first lived in Pensacola, and after being a stay-at- home mom for eleven years, I decided to become a Realtor. We had decided to rent for a year before buying our first home. • The demand is very strong right now for new homes, and we still are experiencing a shortage of available supply. Therefore, we anticipate that in the next six months, the demand will continue increas ing for new home builds. Anything under $400,000 appears to sell very quickly. Many magazines are promoting the Gulf Coast as an excellent place to live, and that praise has caught the attention of many out-of-town clients wanting to move to this location permanently or build a second home here. Many clients, while home during COVID, increased the value of their existing home by spending mon ey updating their kitchens and baths to sell at a
higher market price to turn around and put toward purchasing a new, larger home.
HERE’S WHAT TO EXPECT IN THE SHORT TERM

• Expansion continues along the Coast, and we continue to see new opportunities and attractions being built. There are numer ous projects that have been completed or are under way in our region, including a planned Buc-cee’s convenience store, the popular Mississippi Gulf Coast Aquarium in Gulfport, the Amtrak coming to Bay St. Louis, the expansion of the Boardwalk in Biloxi, the Mississippi Sea Wolves (semi-pro hockey team) returning to Biloxi Coliseum, the expansion of Margaritaville Casino and Resort, etc. All these exciting developments happening in our area will increase jobs, thus solidifying a predicted increase in demand for new homes needed on the Mississippi Gulf Coast.
Although the feds have continued to increase inter est rates, building has not slowed down. It appears that as rates rise, costs associated with building materials are decreasing, which is causing the total price for new builds to balance out. We continue to see lumber prices dropping; therefore, there is still a strong growth in demand for new builds. We have seen an increase in people from Louisiana building second homes on the Mississippi Gulf Coast. Most of these clients are using cash to purchase these homes. Since COVID, we have had an influx of peo ple visiting cities along the Coast and falling in love with our towns, so much so that they have decided to move here.

It’s heartening to see the growth
When preparing your home for guests, you want to set it up for success. Invest in the important things, like good linens and a working coffee pot. Guests don’t want to sleep on uncomfortable sheets and use paper-thin towels when they’re paying good money for their stay.
The growth of short-term rentals and the increase in supply we have seen lately was something many locals never thought would be common on the Coast. If you search a rental platform, you will find hundreds of options to choose from. The market in our area has come a long way, especially with all the hurdles we’ve faced. When many of us were sorting through flooded homes from Hurricane Katrina, followed by the 2008 housing crisis and spiking insurance costs, people weren’t exactly flocking here to invest. I for one, am glad to see the change.

I see guests leave messages in sign-in books every day saying they can’t wait to come back.
Having a top-notch cleaning crew also is essential. You want a crew that knows what turnaround cleaning involves. It is not a simple run in, change sheets and run out. It is generally a deep clean every time. We want guests coming to the Coast to feel welcome, and arriving at a sparkling-clean rental is a great way to start their visit on a positive note.

When designing contemporary coastal interiors, I draw inspiration from nature. Benjamin Moore’s Hale Navy is a favorite of mine because it is a true navy. It really goes with everything, and navy blue is one of those colors that always will be in style. Hale navy also works well in any design scheme, from traditional to modern. It’s such a good blue that Benjamin Moore made it part of their Historical Collection. The trick to using dark colors is ensuring there is enough light in the room to support the color.

White is complicated because of all the different undertones it can have. To pick the right shade, I recommend first identifying the “boss” in the room. This is usually the flooring or countertops. Once you determine the boss’s undertone, you can figure out which undertone you need for your white walls. I also recommend either painting a very large square on your wall or ordering a peel-and-stick sample from Samplize.com. You want to make sure you like it not just when the sun is shining, but at night and when it’s raining as well. Light plays a very large role in how we see color, so do not skip this step.

Finally, Benjamin Moore’s Adirondack Green is high on my favorites list. I like it so much that I used it in my own kitchen. Adirondack Green is earthy and calming, giving off a serene forest vibe that can be used in any room in your house.

1. ASK QUESTIONS AND REMAIN CURIOUS.
As much as we would like to believe that our children will never make mistakes, they will. They’re human, just like us, which means at some point, they will mess up. The true test of character is how they rebound from those mistakes, and parents have the privilege of helping them navigate those waters by encouraging them to take responsibility for their mistakes and correcting them in the future.
As a parent, it can be difficult to be on the outside of situations happening inside your child’s classroom. We want to know all the details of every situation, but unfortunately, we do not have that kind of access. What we can do is ask questions of our child and our child’s teacher. Often, asking casual questions and genuinely listening is the most effective way to get the information you want and need. When asking teachers questions, it often helps to provide them with the information you have and ask for the information that will connect the dots and help you see the full picture. Above all, remain curious and avoid jumping to conclusions.
4. ENCOURAGE SELF-ADVOCACY
Last month, students and teachers returned to school across the Coast, and parents resumed their supporting roles in their children’s academic endeavors. At the beginning of the school year, everyone typically strives to put their best foot forward, creating a honeymoon period among teachers, students and parents. However, as classwork, homework and tests become more challenging, conflicts may arise in the classroom. While parent-teacher conversations to resolve these conflicts may seem nerve-racking and difficult, here are some ways to help them go more smoothly.

Students may fear speaking up because they’re afraid they may be wrong for doing so. Encourage your child to speak up using the appropriate channels, and offer your support from the sidelines.

From a young age, talk with your children about what they like to learn and what school subjects they enjoy most. Talk about college and what they might want to do for a career one day. Help your children make the connection between their future and their actions today.
• Resist the urge to step in too often.
School is and always will be your children’s responsibility, so treat it that way. It’s okay for you to provide guidance and
support, but don’t get too involved in the homework process or take over when they get stuck. Encourage them to be resourceful by looking through their notes or textbook when they are confused by a problem or searching the internet for videos to help them. And if you don’t know how to help when your children ask for guidance on that math or science homework, instead have them explain where they’re confused and come up with a few specific questions to ask their teacher the next day.

a low grade on a test or assignment, talk about what they think went wrong. Did they follow directions? Study thoroughly? Keep up on class work? And when they receive a high grade, point out how they got there.
Children must understand that learning is a journey that will have ups and downs. Remind them to pay attention to how they learn best and the pitfalls that can make school harder for them. Some students realize early on that they are a strong reader and less strong at math. This will mean they’ll need to put extra effort into math homework and ask for teachers’ help. Other students might struggle with organization. Developing good routines will be essential. The more children know themselves as students, the easier they can self-assess and get help when they need it.
It’s so important that your child becomes an independent learner. As your child progresses through school and life, the responsibilities only become greater—and teachers expect that your child will be a self-starter who takes initiative to manage his or her own learning.

kiddos are going back to school, and whether it is their first day or fourth year, it may not feel easy. Separation anxiety is a real thing that impacts many of us and impacts most of our little ones. It can lead to tearful, loud, intense and sometimes even traumatizing moments. Knowing this will happen has kept me from taking my babe places. However, after weighing the pros and cons, I determined my son needs socialization (after he followed a toddler around a Bass Pro Shop for a solid five minutes, we realized it was a must). There still may be tears, and even some screaming, but these tips will aid in a more peaceful transition long term.
• Your choice of caregiver and his or her ability to provide love and safety.
• Accept and acknowledge their feelings. If a child is scared, angry or sad, accept it in your heart and acknowledge it by giving your child’s feeling a word. You could say, “You are feeling scared right now? Mom feels scared sometimes, too. That’s OK. Mom will be back at (X time). I see some friends playing over there. Do you want to read first or play first?”

While washing, resist the urge to scrub, even to remove makeup. Scrubbing irritates your skin, which can make it look worse.
To help, I’ve compiled a simple routine for managing oily skin. Although excess oil can clog pores and lead to increased acne breakouts, oily skin also has many benefits. Oil helps preserve the skin, and those with oily skin tend to have thicker skin and fewer wrinkles. The key is to strike a balance between having too much oil and maintaining your skin’s natural moisture.
4. STAY AWAY FROM OIL-BASED OR ALCOHOLBASED CLEANSERS. These can irritate your skin.
And lastly, a few don’ts: First, never sleep in your makeup. This is a good rule for all skin types. Also, try to refrain from touching your face throughout the day. Although it’s tempting, doing so can spread dirt, oil and bacteria from your hands to your face. Only touch your face when you’re cleansing, moisturizing or applying sunscreen or makeup — and make sure your hands are clean first.
Even if your face is not generally oily, you still may have an oily T zone and enlarged or clogged pores this time of year. An overabundance of oil can result in enlarged pores, shiny-looking skin and blackheads.

Over the last several months, you undoubtedly have heard about, or been directly affected by, the infant formula shortage. One of the most common questions I get is, “Why did this happen?” That’s a bit of a loaded question, but here goes:
It appears that a combination of factors caused the shortage. In the face of global supply chain issues caused by the pandemic, the situation was acutely worsened by Abbott Pharmaceuticals’ sudden, voluntary recall of their formula lines, including Elecare and Alimentum. This unexpected withdrawal reduced the country’s formula supply by more than 40 percent. Other companies delayed increasing production to fill the void, likely because there was no information about how quickly Abbott might be back online, leaving the other companies with a sudden glut of perishable product. This decision allowed the void to persist longer than it might have otherwise. Also, the widespread panic (which was completely understandable) by families needing formula for their infants led to mass purchasing, further eroding supply. The situation has been even more problematic for children who require specialized formulas, such as those with intestinal failure, kidney disease and food allergies.

Ultimately, it’s going to take all the physicians in the state banding together and pooling resources to ensure that Mississippi’s children get what they need.
Infants should remain on formula until they are a year old. In these unprecedented times, if necessary, older infants (roughly 10 months and up), temporarily can be managed with toddler formula, or even cow’s milk. However, we recommend transitioning them back to formula as soon as it becomes available. For younger infants, it is unsafe to give them cow’s milk at their very young age. Instead, we recommend trying to transition to a different brand of formula. Another option, if no infant formula is available, is to use toddler formula, but only for a few days until an alternative becomes available. In April of 2021, the state began the permanent closure of all freestanding WIC distribution centers. This move began and proceeded with little to no notice to families, or even providers. In Mississippi, roughly 90,000 residents utilize the WIC program, which is critical in providing formula and food for children and families in need. These centers generally were in communities where they were needed most, and the closures caused families, many with limited means, to have to spend additional time and resources to travel to supermarkets designated by the state.That protocol change, coupled with the pandemic’s economic impact, caused a cumulative effect in terms of the difficulties caused by that lack of access. If that weren’t bad enough, now there’s the formula shortage. At my practice, Kids and Tummies, the shortage has hit my youngest infants and families with limited means the hardest.
For the families of Mississippi infants, this shortage is just one more crisis in a long list of problems surrounding formula and food access.

WHAT CAUSES THEM?
Nobody wants them, but 40 million adults in the U.S. have them: varicose veins. Many believe those purple, often bulging, lines in legs and ankles are an unfortunate, yet normal, part of the aging process.
• Sclerotherapy: an injection for spider veins with almost instantaneous results.
Dr. Thompson: A vein is a muscular tube that drains the blood from legs and feet back to the heart. Over time, veins can weaken, stretch and dilate, which can create leaky valves.
That’s when they become visible and, if they are not treated, the veins become swollen and achy.
If you stand all day, consider wearing compression stockings. They prevent development of varicose veins and manage early symptoms, such as heavy, tired legs, swelling and cramping.
Dr. Thompson: A variety of treatments are available for varicose veins and spider veins. Most of them are done in a doctor’s office and are relatively pain free, allowing for a quick return to your normal routine. Plus, most health insurance plans, Medicare and Medicaid cover them.
They include:
• Laser treatment: insertion of a tiny fiber into a varicose vein to emit laser energy that destroys the diseased portion of your varicose vein.
Got varicose veins?
Dr. Thompson: Varicose veins and spider veins are very common, affecting about 40 percent of men and 70 percent of women by age 60. Primary risk factors include pregnancy (which is why women have them more often), extended periods of time standing and genetics. They are very common in teachers, cashiers and medical professionals because of the amount of time they spend on their feet.
ARE THERE WAYS TO AVOID GETTING VARICOSE VEINS?
• Compression stockings: These elastic stockings that squeeze veins and stop excess blood from flowing backward also may relieve pain and swelling (not a popular option with south Mississippi heat, but sometimes effective nonetheless).
• Microphlebectomy: Larger varicose veins that aren’t candidates for the above options may ultimately require removal through a few tiny microincisions in the office with local anesthetic.Whenitcomes to treatment, women tend to seek it more often than men. However, treatment is essential, regardless of gender, because varicose veins may signify a real health risk.

Dr. Thompson: Despite old wives' tales that crossing your legs or wearing high heels contributes to varicose veins, they don’t. There’s not a direct correlation; however, if you’re crossing your legs a lot, you’re probably in a sedentary job. As for high heels, some people think calves don’t flex as much when we wear heels, which is loosely related to varicose veins. I wouldn’t say you can’t cross your legs or wear high heels; just be aware of what you’re doing and for how long.

Pick a weight that is challenging, not one that you can breeze through. After all, weight lifting does not make women big and bulky. It’s a big and bulky diet that goes alongside a big and bulky weight lifting routine. Weight training helps to burn fat and maintain or tone lean muscle.

Recommendations to avoid backpack injuries include keeping your child’s backpack weight to less than 15 percent of his or her body weight, encouraging your child to bring only necessary books and materials home each night and helping your child understand backpack safety and how to properly load his or her bag.
Also, WIC has begun making it easier for parents to receive an alternative formula that is appropriate, even if it is not the formula their provider originally prescribed. They also have begun to stock, and have been approved to acquire, alternative formulas as that previously were not available or approved at WIC. The request for an alternative formula can be made by calling the WIC call center at (800) 388-6747 or completing a participant complaint form online.
HERE IS SOME OTHER ADVICE I GIVE PATIENTS AND PROVIDERS:
• Tighten the straps to keep the load closer to the back

Parents, if your infant, regardless of age, shows any signs of intolerance to a new formula, discontinue it immediately and notify your pediatrician or pediatric gastroenterologist.Recently,I’vereceived countless calls from parents, as well as practitioners and pediatricians, throughout the state asking for advice about what to feed babies in need. At my practice, we give patients, and sometimes providers, sample cans of formula whenever we can get our hands on them. I’ve told pediatricians who have called me to send us their patients in need, and they’re welcome to what we have. Ultimately, it’s going to take all the physicians in the state banding together and pooling resources to ensure that Mississippi’s children get what they need.
There are some bits of good news. First, Abbott has resumed production and anticipates that within the next two months, things should be back to normal.

Many good medications are available for slowing or preventing seizures. If you know someone who has seizures, have him or her check with a neurologist or family doctor for care. While the seizure itself may not cause brain damage, falling or drowning during one can be dire.

In “focal” seizures, only one part of the body is affected, such as an arm or facial muscle, or there may be a sense of something crawling on the skin. These can have peculiar results, such as hallucinations (including sights, smells and tastes) or a vivid déjà vu, such as recalled memories or emotions.

If you witness someone having a grand mal seizure, make sure he or she is safe, lying on the floor and not hitting anything sharp or hard. Never put anything in a person’s mouth during a seizure. The tongue can’t be swallowed; that’s a myth. Biting of the tongue may happen, but the tongue heals quickly.
An absence seizure causes someone to blank out or stare into space for a few seconds. These also are called petit mal seizures. Absence seizures are most common in children and typically don’t cause any long-term problems. Most seizures that develop in childhood are genetically linked, and there’s a family history. However, seizures that develop in older adults usually are caused by brain damage from trauma, a stroke or a tumor. Each day, I spend time with clients who are distraught by very high insurance rate increases. With inflation, back-to-back destructive hurricane seasons, rising construction costs and more, insurance expenses also are increasing for property coverage, particularly flood insurance.
Claims will impact your policy pricing for five years. By avoiding excessive claims and continuing to implement stronger risk management strategies, your business will benefit from being more attractive to the insurance industry. This leads to more options on your coverages and lower rates. Most insurance carriers also will provide inspection and risk assessment services that will keep you better protected. Some insurance increases may be inevitable due to the global nature of the pricing, but by mitigating business risks, you always will benefit from the best available pricing.

I would recommend working with one agent who has access to many different insurance markets. If you use multiple agents, all may have access to the same markets, and multiple submissions will muddy the waters and cause the insurance companies to decline to offer coverage.Youwill need to provide your loss run report to the agent who is remarketing your account. This report shows all losses you have incurred in the past five years. As a fellow business owner, I recommend requesting a copy of your loss runs from your company every year, whether you are shopping or not, because some unscrupulous agents may withhold the reports if they learn you are requesting quotes elsewhere, which delays your remarketing efforts.

You can’t go swimming for 30 minutes after eating, or you will get cramps and drown. We’ve all heard them, and some, you may still believe. I’d like to dispel a few common financial myths.

Find a foundation that is unchanging, one you can build upon and in which you can find strength, no matter the season of life. For me, through all the good and bad times, my faith in Jesus Christ has sustained me. What foundation do you build upon?While
I’ve discussed this myth before. If you don’t start putting away money when you have very little, you establish a pattern that is hard to break later. Building a mindset of “I don’t have enough, but I’ll start when I have more,” continues to expand. You make a little more and decide that is still “not enough” to start saving, or you reward yourself for making more money and buy that item you really “need” or “want.” It’s a never-ending cycle. Break the cycle, whatever your financial condition. Start putting away something now, even it’s one dollar. Over time, those dollars add up.

Have you watched the news lately? How many “rich” people have you seen on TV or read about recently with lots of money who still suffer broken relationships and lives? Yes, having money can make life easier. However, money is not the answer to your problems, nor does it assure happiness.
These opinions are hurtful, and advice like this is very unwise. Problems like these must be brought into the light so they can be examined, and a solution can be found. I’m not recommending that you publicly air all your problems. However, I am suggesting that you seek help from someone qualified to assist you, such as a financial professional, accountant or perhaps even a friend or relative who is excellent at budgeting and money management.

I have only listed a few financial myths, the list is virtually endless. I encourage you to examine your relationship with money. If you take the time to do so, I believe some myths may be exposed. Once that happens, you must decide what to do about them. Will you continue making your kids wait 30 minutes before swimming, or let them jump right in? Gather your courage, be brave and let go of all those financial myths to embrace what could be a bright financial future.
Don’t seek advice from someone in the same circumstances you are. How can that person help you climb out of the same pit? Seeking help means you must be willing to discuss every area of you finances, good, bad or ugly. If you don’t, the advice you get will be faulty because it was based on inaccurate information.

Unfortunately, just as some believe you should toughen up and never talk about mental health struggles, there are those who believe the same about financial issues. They tend to oversimplify the answer to complex issues. They still think all you need to do is make more money or stop spending. “We found ourselves late at night in the coolest little wine bar in Valencia,” Sommer recalls. “There were stacks of books on the tables, and maybe a dozen chattery internationals, legs crossed, leaning into one another — all thoroughly enjoying their late dinners in this little back-alley Spanish wine bar-bookstore. It was in that moment, I thought, ‘We need this,’ that Biloxi needed a wine bar.”

WHAT IS THE MISSION OF BILOXI FIRST?
Each year, Biloxi First awards a teacher grant from the interest on the named grant funds. We have awarded more than $431,000 and funded 620 creative classroom projects in the Biloxi SchoolWhenDistrict.BiloxiSchools resorted to virtual instruction during the height of the pandemic, a need arose for additional promethean boards, an important tool in virtual learning. Biloxi First provided $200,000 to help provide promethean boards for every classroom. Biloxi First also was a valuable partner in the passage of the 1999 bond issue for the building of new schools and the renovation of existing schools.
Biloxi First is a nonprofit foundation committed to promoting community involvement with the educational process and supporting teachers’ creative endeavors within the Biloxi School District.
I continue to be amazed by the steady growth and sustainability of Biloxi First through the efforts of a dedicated board of directors and support from the community. Biloxi First is a volunteer organization; therefore, all donations go to advancing our mission. Having an established educational endowment fund ensures we will continue to give back to the Biloxi education community.
