This year’s Okehampton Show will be the 115th Show and it remains an important annual event for those who work and live in this beautiful area, as well as for tourist who enjoy visiting this rural part of England. It is a wonderful showcase for the best of agricultural and rural life and is a fantastic day out for all the family.

There will be no on the day facility for entries for the Show jumping. All entries must be made in advance of the show.

All competitors will receive their Vehicle Pass and Admission Wristbands to enter the Showground in advance. Additional grooms who have not been allocated a ticket via an entry will be charged on the gate, and there will be no refunds.

RULES OF EXHIBITION

1. The Committee’s interpretation of any rule shall be absolutely final.

2. All Exhibitors are required to comply with the Biosecurity Rules currently in force at Okehampton Showground. Queries should be directed to the Biosecurity Officer on 01837 52496.

3. All Exhibitors are required to comply with legislation concerning Health & Safety Regulations and Environmental Health Regulations currently in force.

4. It is the Responsibility of all competitors to allow sufficient time for traffic conditions to get to their classes on time as these cannot be held up.

ENTRIES

5. All exhibits must be the bona fide property of the Exhibitor at the date of entry.

6. All exhibits must have a Passport and this should accompany the horse/pony to the Showground. Horses must have been vaccinated to comply with the requirements of the primary course (1st vaccination and then 2nd vaccination between 21 – 92 days later), followed by the first booster (150 – 215 days) and all subsequent boosters. Horses may compete having received the primary course and prior to the first booster but not within 7 days of receiving a vaccine dose.

Foals: In-foal mares that have already had vaccinations of primary Equine Influenza course should be vaccinated 4-6 weeks before the foal is due to be born. Foals should be vaccinated for Equine Influenza at 6 months to commence their primary course. We urge all owners to adhere to strict biosecurity protocols at all times.

7. One entry form must be submitted per Exhibitor.

8. Entries without appropriate fees cannot be accepted.

9. Persons making a false entry may be disqualified from making a future entry in connection with any exhibition of the Association for three years or altogether at the Committee’s discretion and shall be liable to pay the Association £15.00 for every entry made contravening this rule.

10. The Association reserves the right to refuse any entry or entries without assigning any reason for such refusal.

11. Under no circumstances can an animal be substituted after the closing date of entries.

EXHIBITOR ADMISSION

12. Each Exhibitor will receive two Wristbands to be worn by the Rider, Driver or Exhibitor/person on foot Exhibitors entering between 3-4 classes will receive a 3rd wristband. Exhibitors entering 5 classes or more will receive a 4th wristband. All Horse Exhibitors entering the Showground MUST be Wearing a Wristband. Anyone without an appropriate wristband will be charged the full admission on the Gate. Children under 16 with an accompanying adult enter the show FOC and do not require a wristband.

RE-ADMISSION

13. Any person (except wristband wearers) wishing to leave and re-enter the Showground whilst the Agricultural Show is in progress MUST have a rubber stamp impression placed on their hand or re-entry will not be permitted without the due entrance fee being paid.

GENERAL

14. The Committee reserves the right to amalgamate or split any class or amend the timetable as it deems necessary.

15. Exhibitors must ensure that their animals are properly cared for.

16. All animals must be under complete control at all times.

17. Exhibitors are only allowed in the Show Rings whilst competing.

18. Exhibitors are prohibited from taking Mobile Phones into any Show Ring whilst competing.

19. Any Exhibitor who uses verbal abuse to any Judge or Steward will be asked to leave the Ring.

20. The Association reserves the right to take the opinion of the Hon. Veterinary Surgeon on any animal exhibited and to take any action on such opinion as they may feel fit.

21. Any Exhibitor shall forfeit and pay to the Association the sum of £30.00 as and for liquidated damages, if any animal which he/she is exhibiting is to his/her knowledge suffering from any contagious or infec- tious disease and for each and every such animal if more than one.

22. The Judges decision is final.

23. No person may knowingly show a horse/pony in a class where the Judge has owned, bred, sold, leased, broken, trained or produced that horse/pony or where the horse/pony has been owned, bred sold leased broken, trained or produced by the Judge’s immediate family, partner, employer or employee. An exhibitor may not show under a Judge for whom he/she has produced, broken or trained an equine within the last 12 months.

24. All exhibits in classes restricted by a height limit are liable to measurement. Height Certificates under the Joint Measurement Board will be accepted.

25. Any animal taking part in any class may be liable to Dope Testing.

26. In all Ridden classes Horse/Pony must be 4 years old and over.

27. All Riders must have attained their 3rd birthday by the 1st January of the current year.

28. Correctly secured British Standard Skull Caps / Riding Hats that meet current safety standards must be worn by riders at all times when mounted other than Class 21 Side Saddle Costume Concours d’Elegance. Competitors in any Classes may wear back protectors.

29. All Broodmares must be 4 years old and over with their own foal at foot.

30. All Foals must be at least three weeks old on the day of the Show. All Foals must accompany their dam at all times.

31. It is Exhibitors responsibility to enter their ring at the start of classes, the start of classes will not be delayed.

32. Dogs to be kept on leads at all times and MUST NOT enter any Collecting Ring or Show Ring.

MOUNTAIN & MOORLAND

33. All exhibits must be shown in accordance with both their individual Breed Society rules and NPS rules.

34. All Stallions and Colts 2 years old or over must hold a current Stallion Licence unless otherwise governed by their individual Breed Society. Handlers of Stallions and Colts in the In Hand classes must have attained their 14th birthday before 1st January of the current year.

35. Handlers in the In Hand classes aged 14 years and under must wear correctly secured British Standard Skull Caps/Riding Hats.

36. Riders of Stallions must have attained their 12th birthday before 1st January of the current year when riding Small Breeds and their 14th birthday before 1st January of the current year for Large Breeds.

37. NPS Qualifying Rounds: These classes are judged under the Rules of the NPS. Ponies must be registered in any of the British Riding Pony studbook sections or the Ridden Register; the GSB; the AHSB; the AASB, or registered in the main body of their respective M&M Stud Book. Part breds are not eligible unless overstamped into one of the British Riding Pony studbook sections. or the Ridden Register. Qualifying rounds for most NPS competitions are open to ponies owned by NPS members and non members but only ponies owned by adult NPS Qualifying or Life members are eligible to qualify for the final of the competition at the NPS Summer Championship Show at Malvern in August 2024. The highest placed pony, if owned by an NPS member, in each class will qualify for the final. Qualification may pass down to third place if the first and second ponies are already qualified. NPS/Corscaron Horse Essentials Home Produced Ridden ChampionshipRiders of Home Produced ponies (see definition in the NPS Rules Book) can wear a white arm band in classes where this is indicated. These ponies, if owned by NPS members, are then eligible to qualify for the final at the NPS Summer Championship Show. The Owner’s Membership cards MUST be produced in the ring when requested or the qualification will be forfeit.

38. NPS Silver Medal Rosette Championships: These classes are judged under the Rules of the NPS. NPS Silver Medal Rosettes are only awarded when the owner of the champion pony is a Qualifying or Life member of the NPS. A valid membership card must be in the rider’s/handler’s possession on entering the ring and be produced immediately on request by either the judge or the steward. If the owner of the Champion pony is not a member, or the owner’s membership card is not immediately produced, the rosette may be awarded to the Reserve Champion provided they have the required membership card. If the Champion pony has previously qualified it is still entitled to the Silver Medal Rosette, but the qualification card goes to the Reserve Champion pony, provided the owner of that pony is a member of the NPS. The Silver Medal Rosette and the qualification card can be awarded no lower than first Reserve (third). Foals are not eligible for Silver Medal Championships. Qualifiers are entitled to compete in the final of the Silver medal rosette championship to be held at the NPS summer championship show in August 2024.

HORSE TRAILERS, LORRIES PARKING

39. The attention of Exhibitors is especially drawn to the regulation whereby lorries and other vehicles conveying exhibits must park where directed by the parking attendants. Exhibitors cooperation in this area will aid the speedy parking of vehicles and thereby reduce traffic queues.

OBJECTIONS

40. Any person wishing to lodge an objection having reference to any person or exhibit shall do so in writing within thirty minutes of the completion of the class or championship, and at the same time shall deposit the sum of £20.00. If an investigation by the Committee of the Association shows that the objection is not sustained, the said Committee reserves the right that the deposit shall be forfeited and paid into the funds of the Association.

41. Exhibits which are the subject of an objection must not be removed from the Showground until the objection has been decided or the Horse Secretary’s permission has been obtained.

42. All objections or any questions arising shall be dealt with by the Committee and their decision shall be final.

When jumping in the Ring, the practice or collecting areas, all Riders must wear protective headgear, according to the current standards as listed below:

All PAS 015; VG1; (BS)EN1384 2017; ASTM F1163 04a onwards; SNELL E2001; SNELL E2016; AS/NZS 3838 2003 onwards;

Skullcaps must be of, or worn with, a dark coloured plain peaked cover. Refer to your Society/ Association Rule Book for further clarification.

Correctly secured Skull Caps/Riding Hats that meet one of the following current Safety Standards/specifications MUST be worn by all Riders between the ages of 15 to 17 inclusive.

All PAS 015; VG1; (BS) EN1384 2017; ASTM F1163 04a onwards; SNELL E2001; SNELL E2016; AS/NZS 3838 2006 onwards.

The most recent updates to the list are the addition of SNELL E2016 and EN1384 (2017); the newest version of the SNELL Standard could have begun to appear in 2017 and is accepted to the list; the newest version of the EN1384 Standard will begin to appear during 2018 and is also accepted to the list.

Details of entries will be published in the catalogue and passed to our printers/publishers, solely for the purpose of compiling that publication. Results information may be published (in printed form and online) and provided to the Press and Breed Societies for publication. Information relating to exhibitors and their animals may be provided to DEFRA, Trading Standards, Animal & Plant Health Agency (APHA), British Cattle Movement Service (BCMS), SAC, Breed Societies, County Councils, Veterinary Advisors and others who have regulatory access.

Snaffle bridles only and the lead rein to be attached to the noseband. A Special Rosette will be awarded to each Rider not placed.

6. Ridden Pony, Mare or Gelding, 4 years old and over. Not exceeding 12.2hh (128cm). Rider 14 years old and under. No Leading Reins.

7. Ridden Pony, Mare or Gelding, 4 years old and over. Exceeding 12.2hh (128cm) but not exceeding 14.2hh (148cm). Rider 16 years old and under. No Leading Reins.

The Heathman – Glass Perpetual Challenge Cup to the best pony not exceeding 13.2hh (138cm) in class 7.

Championship – 1st & 2nd prize winners from classes 5 – 7. The S. Yeo Perpetual Trophy to the Champion. Champion goes forward to Best Pony in Show.

PONY BREEDING – In Hand

These classes are open to all ponies. Stallions 4 years old or over must hold a current Stallion Licence. All ponies must be shown plaited.

8. Stallion, Mare or Gelding, 4 years old and over. Not exceeding 14.2hh (148cm). A Special Rosette and prize of £5.00 for the Best Foal out of a Mare shown in this class.

9. Yearling, 2 or 3 year old, Colt, Filly or Gelding. Not to exceed 14.2hh (148cm) at maturity. Special Rosette to the Best Yearling.

Best Gelding Rosette will be awarded to the highest placed Gelding in each class. Rosettes donated by the Okeleat Stud.

Championship – 1st & 2nd prize winners from classes 8 & 9. The Chillaton Stud Perpetual Challenge Cup presented by Mr. Bruce Streeter to the Champion. Champion goes forward to Best Pony in Show.

ARABS, ANGLO ARABS & PART-BRED ARABS

All entries must be registered in their appropriate Stud Book/Register of the Arab Horse Society at the closing date of entry. Part Bred Arab horses or ponies must have a minimum of 12.5% Arab blood. Anglo Arabs carry the blood of Arab and Thoroughbred only and in any proportion.

10. Ridden, Pure Bred Arab, Anglo Arab and Part-Bred Arab, Stallion, Mare or Gelding, 4 years old and over. (Display required – Judge will not ride). ` Winner to go forward to the Supreme Horse Championship.

11. In Hand, Pure Bred Arab, Yearling, 2 or 3 year old, Colt, Filly or Gelding.

12. In Hand, Pure Bred Arab, Stallion, Mare or Gelding, 4 years old and over. Special Rosette and a prize of £5 to the Best Foal out of a Mare shown in this class.

13. In Hand, Anglo Arab or Part-Bred Arab, Stallion, Mare or Gelding, 4 years old and over and Yearling, 2 or 3 year old, Colt, Filly or Gelding. Special Rosette and a prize of £5 to the Best Foal out of a Mare shown in this class.

The South West Arab Horse Group will present a Special Rosette to the highest placed exhibit owned by a Member of the SWAHG in each class. They will also present a Special Rosette to be Best Yearling in classes 11 and 13, and a Special Rosette to the Best Gelding in class 10, 11 and 12.

Championship – 1st & 2nd prize winners from classes 11 – 13. The Lindsay Cup presented by Miss. P. Lindsay to the Champion. Champion goes forward to the Supreme championship.

SKEWBALD AND PIEBALD – In Hand and Ridden

Affiliated to the British Skewbald and Piebald Association (BSPA).

BSPA classes are open to Skewbald and Piebald Horses and Ponies ONLY. Open to Members and Non Members. These Classes are affiliated to The British Skewbald and Piebald Association and are Qualifiers for The WORLD CHAMPIONSHIPS OF COLOUR National Championship Show 2023. All classes will be judged within the rules and criteria of the BSPA. 20. The Side Saddle Association EQUITATION CHAMPIONSHIPS OPEN QUALIFYING CLASS. Run under SSA Rules defined in the current Members’ Handbook. Open to SSA Members and Non-Members. Members carrying their current Championship Points Cards are eligible for SSA rosettes to 3rd Adult and 3rd Junior places and SSA Championship Points. Southernden Farm offers a rosette to the highest placed Member aged under 14 on 1st January of the current year. A rosette in memory of The Late Mr R Philpot is offered to the Adult Member and Manor Grange Stud Show Centre to the Junior Member, judged to be the best turned out. Competitors must wear a hat to current Safety Standard or above. Winner to go forward to the Supreme Horse Championship. In this equitation class it is the rider and not the horse that is judged and qualifies and there will be no reference to the sex, breeding or conformation of the horse. However horses should, in the opinion of the judge, have manners suitable for carrying a side saddle. Horses shall be 4 years old or over. Competitors enter the ring together and are required by the Judge to walk, trot and canter on the right rein, followed by a change of rein through trot and canter left, before being called into a provisional order. Each competitor is asked to give a freestyle show to a maximum of 2 minutes, after which the competitor’s saddle and turnout is inspected after their individual show.

21. SIDE SADDLE COSTUME CONCOURS D’ELEGANCE CLASS.

The sole criterion for this class is the elegance of the picture presented by horse/pony and rider, and the way of going of the horse/pony. Safe tack must be used. Detailed inspection of the rider’s period costume is not required. Fancy dress is not permitted. Competitors are required to walk, trot and canter. No individual show is required, but the judge may ask small groups of 3 or 4 riders to give short displays. A Special rosette will be awarded to the highest placed Adult and Junior Members of the SSA carrying their current Championship Points Card. Competitors should produce a brief résumé about their costumes for the Commentator. Juniors must wear hats to current Safety Standard or above for this class. Adult riders not wearing such hats do so at their own risk.

VHS Regional Final qualification. All competitors placed 1st to 4th in each age category will qualify for the corresponding class at VHS Regional Finals. Members must carry their cards in the ring and have their showing card signed by the judge in the ring as proof of qualification. Non-members will receive a red qualification card which can be exchanged for signed showing card when applying for VHS membership. This MUST be done within 21 days of qualification. It is the competitors responsibility to present their Showing card to the judge. Regional Finals are open to members only.

IN ORDER TO ENTER A STALLION CLASS AT AN AFFILIATED SHOW, ENTIRE MALES AGED 4 YEARS OLD AND OVER MUST HAVE AN “S” NUMBER AND HAVE BEEN SUCCESSFULLY THROUGH EITHER THE SPS-BS STALLION ASSESSMENT PRIOR TO 2006 OR THE CURRENT SPSBS VOLUNTARY VETERINARY EXAMINATION. All Highland stallions aged 4yrs and over must hold a Highland Pony Society Stallion Licence. All Stallions must display a bridle disk.

The British Connemara Pony Society offers a Rosette to the Best Connemara in class 51. Owners of the winning pony to be a Member of the BCPS. Membership Card to be produced in the Ring.

The Fell Pony Society offers a Rosette to the Best Fell in class 51. Owners of the winning pony to be a Member of the FPS and FPS membership Card to be produced in the ring.

The Highland Pony Society offers a Rosette to the highest placed Highland Pony in class 51.

Open Championship – 1st & 2nd prize winners from classes 50 & 51. Champion goes forward to Best Pony in Show.

NPS/ THE NICHOLLS FAMILY M&M Ridden Silver Medal Rosette Championship

A Silver Medal Rosette is offered by the National Pony Society for the best registered pony owned by an NPS Qualifying or Life member in the M&M Ridden section (excluding Leading Rein, First Ridden & WHP). Membership cards must be presented in the ring to receive the medal and/or the qualification. Qualifiers are entitled to compete in the final of the Silver Medal Rosette Championship to be held at the NPS Championship Show in 2024.

52. Young Handlers 12 years and under (must not have attained his/her 13th birthday on day of Show)

To be judged on the presentation and competence of the handler, not the animal that is being shown. Handlers must wear correctly secured British Standard Skull caps/Riding hats. No colts or stallions permitted.

A Special Rosette will be awarded to each handler not placed.

CLYDESDALE HORSES – Ridden and In hand

53. Ridden Best Registered or Part Bred Clydesdale Horse

Open to Mares, stallions or geldings, 4 years old and over that are registered in the main British stud book of the Clydesdale Horse Society and Part Bred Clydesdales. (Please indicate breeding and a brief ridden history on entry form for the interest of the commentator)

Riders of stallions must be 16 years and over. Horses may be shown unplaited or plaited with neck rolls. Neck flights are not permitted for health and safety reasons. Tail flights are permissible. Judge will not ride.

The class will be judged on performance and obedience as a ridden horse in Walk, trot, canter and stand and rein back. Horses will be asked to give a go-round together and will then complete an individual display lasting no longer than 2 minutes.

Winner will go forward to the Supreme Championship.

54. In Hand Yearling, 2 or 3 year old, Colt, Filly or Gelding. Special Rosette and a prize of £10.00 will be awarded to the Best Yearling. Special Rosette to the Best 2 year old.

The Clydesdale Horse Society Shield will be awarded to the best yearling or two-year-old colt or filly, registered or eligible for registration with the Society, not having won a Shield before in its lifetime. The exhibitor must be a current member of The Clydesdale Horse Society. The Yearlings may be split from this class if there are sufficient entries forward on the day.

55. In Hand Mare or Gelding, 4 years old and over.

Special Rosette to the Best Foal out of a Mare shown in this class.

The Shire Horse Society offers a Silver-plated Spoon and a Rosette for the Best Mare or Filly from classes 57 & 58 subject to the Shire Horse Society Special Conditions of Offer. The winner of this special prize must be a Member of the Society and the Horse must be registered or eligible for registration in the Stud Book or Grade B Register. No animal to be eligible to take more than one Silver Spoon during any one year.

59. Best Turned Out Heavy Horse In Show Harness or Decorated Harness, Mare or Gelding, 4 years old and over. To be judged 25% for Horse and 75% for Harness.

The Okehampton Show Perpetual Challenge Cup presented by William J N Cornish, President 2014, to the winner of Class 59.

Class 59 is a qualifying Class for the West of England Heavy Horse Championship Sunday 24t September 2023 which is sponsored by All 4 Wood Tree Services.

(RULES OF QUALIFICATION WEST OF ENGLAND HEAVY HORSE CHAMPIONSHIP 2023:

The In-Hand Qualifier must be the Show Champion of the day. If the Champion is already qualified at a previous Qualifier Show then the Qualifier position can go down the line to 4 th place, at the Judge’s discretion. If the top 4 horses have already qualified then no Qualifier can be awarded. The Show Harness and/or Decorated Harness Qualifier must be the highest placed on the day, down to 4th position at the Judge’s discretion. If a Qualifier is subsequently unable to attend the Championships on 24th September at the Turnpike Showground (between Shaftesbury and Gillingham in North Dorset) then the Championship Secretary must be notified no later than 14th September 2023. The Qualification can then be passed to the next eligible horse.

Each horse that qualifies will receive a Qualifier rosette.

AWARDS AT WEST OF ENGLAND HEAVY HORSE CHAMPIONSHIP 2023:

EACH CHAMPION £250, SASH AND ROSETTE, EACH RESERVE CHAMPION £150, SASH AND ROSETTE. THE REMAINING FINALISTS ATTENDING CHAMPIONSHIP £30.00 AND ROSETTE.

All exhibitors are asked to please provide a brief description/history of the vehicle and their horse/pony (Please DO NOT use the Name of your horse/pony or the Name of the Driver/Owner in your details). This will be read out by the Commentator. PLEASE submit details with your entry form.

60. Open Driving Class: Horses and ponies 4 years old or over.

Open to any vehicle to include Traditional/Traditional Type Vehicle, Exercise Vehicle and Trade Vehicle, Show Wagon and Sulky’s are not allowed. All turnouts to be suitable harnessed.

The Show offers a Best Young Driver Rosette in the class, Young Drivers 8-17 years of age, a competent experienced adult groom, aged 18 years or over to be carried at all times. Attention is drawn to Rule 6.3 concerning hard hats BDS Year Book.

The class will be judged in the Ring together, and if sufficient entries forward on the day the class will be split at the Judges Discretion, a Concours d’Elegance will run within the class and will be judged separately by a chosen Judge.

The classes will be run under BDS Rules and Show Affiliation.

Rider may be assisted in the ring by a helper. This class will run as single phase, one round only. A special Rosette will be awarded for each competitor.

63. Minimus Open approximately 40cm. This class will run as single phase, one round only. A special Rosette will be awarded for each competitor.

64. Intro Assisted approximately 50cm. Riders must be 16 years or under on the day of the show. Rider may be assisted in the ring by a helper, verbal assistance only. Combination of horse and rider not to have won a 1st prize in any show jumping class. This class will run as single phase, one round only.

65. Intro Open approximately 50cm - This class will run as single phase, one round only.

66. Restricted Novice Junior approximately 60cm - Riders must be 16 years or under on the day of the show Combination of horse and rider not to have won a 1st prize in any show jumping class at this height or above. This class will run as single phase, one round only.

67. Okehampton Novice approximately 60 cm – Entries for this class must reside in the local area*, Open to horses and ponies of any height, riders of any age. This class will run as single phase, one round only.

68. Restricted Novice Open approximately 60cm - This class will run as single phase, one round only.

69. Novice Junior approximately 70 cm – Riders must be 16 years or under on the day of the show. This class will run as single phase, one round only.

70. Novice Open approximately 70cm - This class will run as single phase, one round only.

71. Intermediate Junior approximately 80 cm – Riders must be 16 years or under on the day of the show. This class will run as single phase, one round only.

72. Intermediate Open approximately 80 cm –This class will run as single phase, one round only

73. Open approximately 90 cm. This class will run as single phase, one round only.

In Single phase competition, the second half of the course will be timed against the clock and in equality of faults over the entire course the time in the second part will be the decider.
