Fly fishing in the high Argentina Valley

Il Monte Saccarello svetta tra le Alpi Liguri con i suoi 2.201 metri, conquistandosi il posto di monte più alto della Liguria, e dà vita al torrente Argentina, le cui acque cristalline scorrono attraverso i paesaggi mozzafiato dell’omonima valle in cui è possibile scorgere anche borghi arroccati. Tra questi ritroviamo il paese di Triora, uno dei borghi più belli d’Italia, noto per il famoso processo alle streghe avvenuto tra il 1587 e il 1589. Infatti, è possibile visitare il museo della stregoneria e la cabotina, ovvero la casa in cui vivevano le streghe, la quale una volta raggiunta svela all’improvviso un panorama spettacolare: così la dorsale orientale della valle Argentina è davanti ai vostri occhi, pronta a lasciarvi a bocca aperta. Insomma, in valle Argentina è bene armarsi di macchina fotografica, perché qui la natura è caratterizzata da un’estrema diversità.

Una piccola nota che forse è importante aggiungere è che la zona è stata anche lo sfondo di tragici eventi avvenuti durante il Secondo Conflitto Mondiale, ma anche sede di numerose forze partigiane che hanno combattuto con tenacia per la liberazione.

Triora è un paese singolare con molto da offrire, addentriamoci allora tra i suoi caratteristici carruggi, che ci portano al suo centro storico, costituito anche dalle mura dell’antico castello risalente al XII secolo. Spostandoci al di fuori del paese, a qualche km di distanza, possiamo imbatterci nel suggestivo ponte di Loreto, costruito ad un’altezza di circa 112 metri sul torrente Argentina.

Per quanto riguarda i prodotti tipici del paese, fa da protagonista il profumatissimo pane di Triora. Questo pane si distingue perché viene cotto per circa un’ora su delle tavole di legno cosparse di crusca, questo tipo di cottura conferisce una crosta molto più dura di tutti gli altri pani, mantenendo l’interno morbido e compatto.

Monte Saccarello stands out among the Ligurian Alps with its elevation of 2,201 meters. It is the highest mountain in Liguria, and gives life to the Argentina stream, the crystalline waters of which flow through the breath-taking landscapes of the homonymous valley where villages are perched. Among these we find the town of Triora, one of the most beautiful villages in Italy, and known for the famous witch trials that took place between 1587 and 1589. In fact, you can visit the witchcraft museum and the cabotina, or the house where the witches lived, which suddenly reveals a spectacular panorama once you have reached it: thus, the eastern ridge of the Argentina valley is in front of your eyes, ready to leave you speechless. In short, in the Argentina valley you’d better arm yourself with a camera, because nature here is characterized by extreme diversity.

A small note that is perhaps important to add is that the area was also the background of tragic events that took place during the Second World War, and the seat of numerous partisan forces that fought tenaciously for liberation.

Triora is an extraordinary town with a lot to offer. So let's go into its characteristic alleys leading us to its historic centre, which also includes the walls of the ancient castle dating back to the 12th century. If we move a few kilometres away outside the town, we can come across the attractive Loreto bridge, built at a height of about 112 meters over the Argentina stream.

As for the typical products of the village, the fragrant Triora bread is the best known. This bread stands out because it is baked for about an hour on wooden boards sprinkled with bran: this type of cooking gives a much harder crust than all other breads, keeping the inside soft and compact. The area also has a wide range of outdoor

activities to offer, including mountain biking, hiking, climbing and much more, not to mention the water of the Argentina stream, which is excellent for Fly Fishing. This activity has been developing continuously in recent times, especially thanks to the commitment of the Fishermen's Association of the High Argentina Valley, whose members have improved the quality of the stream through annual inputs of Mediterranean brown trout fry, by inserting a suitable signposting and maintaining access to the river. Their intent is to also allow tourists to try their hand at this wonderful experience in nature. In addition, many initiatives have also been undertaken for children, allowing them to discover this sport.

Important opportunities for the valley have included an important event in collaboration with “H2O magazine,” which took place in Triora on the weekend of 7-8 May 2022. During those days, the first Rise Fly Fishing Film Festival in Italy and the second course for fishing guides took place, allowing many fans of the sector from all over Italy to come together and share the wonders that this valley has to offer.

The best months for fly fishing are April, May and June, as the water levels are excellent thanks to the spring rains and melting snow. As for the fish that swim in these waters, we can say that they are purely wild and therefore very selective. We can then add that it is the Dry Fly to be used, above all. Now let's talk about the equipment you need to better face your fishing days in this area. First, a pair of waders equipped with boots are essential; the preferable flies are hunting ones, such as the Royal Coachman, Sedge, and March Brown. But

La zona ha da offrire anche una vasta gamma di attività outdoor, tra cui un giro in mountain bike, trekking, arrampicate e tanto altro. Ma non dimentichiamoci delle acque del torrente Argentina, ottime per il Fly Fishing. Quest’attività negli ultimi tempi si sta sviluppando sempre di più, soprattutto grazie all’impegno dell’Associazione Pescatori dell’Alta Valle Argentina, i cui componenti incrementano la qualità del torrente attraverso immissioni annue di avannotti di trota fario mediterranea, inserendo un’adatta segnaletica e occupandosi del mantenimento degli accessi al fiume. Il loro intento è anche quello di permettere ai turisti di cimentarsi in questa esperienza meravigliosa nella natura. Inoltre, sono state intraprese anche molte iniziative per i più piccoli, permettendo loro di scoprire questo sport.

A proposito di importanti opportunità per la valle, nel weekend del 7- 8 maggio 2022, un importante evento in collaborazione con “H2O magazine”, ha avuto luogo a Triora. Durante queste giornate è stata presentata la prima data in Italia del Rise Fly Fishing Film Festival e il secondo corso di guide di pesca, che ha permesso a molti appassionati del settore provenienti da tutt’Italia di ritrovarsi per condividere le meraviglie che questa valle ha da offrire.

I mesi migliori per pescare a mosca sono aprile, maggio e giugno, in quanto i livelli d’acqua sono ottimi grazie alle piogge primaverili e allo scioglimento della neve. Per quanto riguarda i pesci che nuotano in queste acque possiamo dire che sono prettamente selvatici, dunque molto selettivi, e aggiungiamo che è soprattutto la Dry Fly a fare da padrona. Parliamo ora dell’attrezzatura necessaria per affrontare al meglio le vostre giornate di pesca in questa zona. Innanzitutto, sono essenziali un paio di waders dotati di scarponcino; le mosche preferibili sono quelle da caccia, come la Royal Coachman, Sedge, March Brown, ma nelle calde serate estive, diventando le trote molto più

The section managed by the Association starts from the Lucca bridge, located a few kilometres above the town of Molini di Triora, and ends at the springs located above the last village in the Verdeggia valley. The first kilometres of the section are set in a totally wild postcard scenery characterized by crystalline blades carved into the rock. Here the space is very open, allowing you to cast much more easily, and with luck you can come across large fish, especially in the evening.

From a descriptive point of view, upstream it is rather a mountain stream and therefore with less water flow. But it is still spectacular because of its natural setting and the characteristic bridges that surmount it. The setting is therefore wild, full of holes and scrapes at the bottom of rocky gorges.

You can reach the stream through very comfortable paths, which could also be considered as relaxing walks surrounded by greenery. It is incredible how this corner of the Ligurian hinterland can guarantee moments of serenity and breaths of fragrant mountain air. In conclusion, we can still add that this generous area does not only allow an unforgettable mountain experience, but also offers the opportunity to reach, in just one hour by car, the beautiful beaches of the Ligurian Sea. There is no doubt that it is therefore also an excellent destination for a family holiday to get to know the Ligurian landscapes at 360°.

diffidenti, sarà necessario adattarsi alle schiuse del momento, quindi si potrà andare anche su ami molto piccoli, in particolare di taglia #16 con mosche in CDC. È consigliabile utilizzare canne di misura 9’ per poter passare facilmente dalla mosca secca alla ninfa, altrimenti per gli amanti della secca è possibile adoperare la 7’ e con entrambe è bene usare le code 3/4 che sono perfette per evitare il rumore nella posa e non insospettire il pesce.

Il tratto gestito dall’Associazione comincia dal ponte di Lucca, localizzato qualche km al di sopra del comune di Molini di Triora, e termina in corrispondenza delle sorgenti situate sopra l’ultimo borgo della vallata, Verdeggia. I primi km del tratto si presentano in uno scenario da cartolina totalmente selvaggio, caratterizzato da lame cristalline scavate nella roccia. Qui lo spazio si presenta molto aperto e permette di lanciare molto più facilmente e con fortuna ci si può imbattere in pesci di taglia, soprattutto nelle ore serali.

Dal punto di vista descrittivo a monte il torrente si presenta più a carattere montano e quindi con meno portata d’acqua ma comunque spettacolare per la sua cornice naturale e per i suoi ponti caratteristici che vanno a sormontarlo. L’ambientazione è dunque selvatica, ricca di buche e raschi in fondo a gole rocciose. È possibile raggiungere il torrente attraverso sentieri molto comodi e che potrebbero presentarsi anche come rilassanti passeggiate immerse nel verde. Incredibile come questo angolo di entroterra della Liguria possa garantire momenti di serenità, mentre si respira l’aria profumata di montagna.

Concludendo, possiamo ancora aggiungere che questo generoso territorio, oltre a permettere un’esperienza montana indimenticabile, offre anche l’opportunità di raggiungere, in una sola ora di auto, le bellissime spiagge del Mar Ligure. Che dire, è quindi anche un’ottima meta per una vacanza in famiglia per conoscere i paesaggi liguri a 360°.
