WHENEVER we receive news of a new yacht, ready to leave the shipbuilder and make its way to its new owner, there’s a sense of applause all around. And in this issue, we have two rather beautiful and sophisticated yachts that are ready to hit the waters. First up is the impressive Tuhura – you haven’t seen anything like it. Tuhura is truly in a category of its own, unlike any yacht on the market. Its design harkens back to ancient times. The exterior styling is reminiscent of early canoes; dugouts and other vessels used hundreds of years ago by indigenous people all over the world. This throwback to the boating days of times gone by is something that we at Hadag can really appreciate. Read all about this wondrous vessel and see how quickly it mesmerisies you. Next, the Stylish Custom Line 106’ takes centre stage. The whole design was focused on enhancing the contact with the sea and attempting to overthrow boundaries between exterior and interior. The new technical solutions and the overall new exterior look are closely integrated as seamless components of a single architectural design in which form and function are balanced. An important innovation is the elevation of the superstructure – something you can ponder when reading about this gorgeous yacht. Our fashion fix comes from Geox’s SS’18 Summer marine Collection – reminiscent of seaside holidays and beach radiance. their outrigger canoes. The thinking behind revisiting basic primal forms is to evoke a sense of exploration and discovery. In fact, the actual name, ‘Tuhura’ is derived from the Maori verb meaning: to discover, bring to light, unearth, open up, explore, and investigate. “Our Tuhura is a simple idea,” explains Igor Lobanov, “The thought was to take a natural shape similar to those seen in the earliest canoetype craft and augment it multifold to a larger scale, using modern technology.” The main inspiration for the interior design is East Asia and the Pacific islands. Achille Salvagni refers to the interior as a “brushed teak habitat” (floors, walls, ceilings) including thin reveals in gunmetal and natural bronze with tatami floors. “Tuhura is a megayacht conceived for a dynamic owner, nevertheless the timeless sense of peace and calmness are the main characteristics,” says Salvagni. “This softness and dynamicity are reflected in the humble elegance and sensuality of the primitive organic shapes echoed throughout.” Lobanov’s masterful exterior design works well with the interior and is inherently flexible so that the yacht can be designed in any size from 80 to 120 meters in length. Tuhura’s hull and propulsion system have been developed in collaboration with BMT. The pure simplicity of the canoe form leads to a naturally efficient hull with low overall resistance, good seakeeping and excellent maneuverability. However integrating a modern propulsion system in the canoe form presents a challenge and the team opted for a hybrid Azipod CRP (contra-rotating) propulsion system from ABB. The development of this system was initially trialed in 2003 and it is currently being applied with success on commercial vessels. The hull has been conceived with multiple horizontal windows, utilising an advanced glass technology that consists of a series of dots, allowing the view from within to be completely transparent, while from the exterior, the windows appear the same colour as the hull, disguising their appearance. Glass features further in the impressive black superstructure made up of flat glass panels. Progressive and creative thinking extends to all the systems aboard. LuxLab, the custom design label from Van Berge Henegouwen (VBH) has joined the team to ensure that this is an extremely “smart boat.” Not only are there controls for HVAC, lighting, audio, video, curtains and such, but controls will also monitor behavior aboard regarding preferences such as music and temperature. Furthermore, there are plans to create a 360 room, a multipurpose space for both interactive design and information. “This is a technically challenging and intriguing project,” says Dirk de Jong, Commercial Director at Oceanco. “It is 180-degrees different from our previous two yacht collaborations with Lobanov Design studio, the 86m launched in 2013 and the 110m Jubilee launched just last year. ‫‪he new Custom Line 106 is the second‬‬ ‫‪planing yacht our design firm developed for‬‬ ‫‪restyling the Custom Line range while keeping‬‬ ‫‪continuity with the successful design, functionality‬‬ ‫‪and technical issues the brand is renowned for.‬‬ ‫‪The collaboration with the Ferretti Group‬‬ ‫‪Strategic Product Committee and Engineering‬‬ ‫‪Department was essential for our work.‬‬ ‫‪Our firm was charged of the whole design and‬‬ ‫‪worked at interiors in cooperation with architect‬‬ ‫‪Margherita Casprini. The layout and décor choices‬‬ ‫‪draw inspiration from the most up-to-date lifestyle.‬‬ ‫‪Like the 120’, the first and larger yacht of the‬‬ ‫‪range, some distinctive characteristics of the‬‬ ‫‪successful previous range were enhanced and‬‬ ‫‪combined with new design recurring motifs.‬‬ ‫‪The whole design was focused on enhancing the‬‬ ‫‪contact with the sea and attempting to overthrow‬‬

The new technical solutions and the overall new exterior look are closely integrated as seamless components of a single architectural design in which form and function are balanced. The hull features one long window on the main and lower deck resulting in a sleeker line while the choice of no gunwales and the wider windows increase comfort on board through a closer contact with the sea. Accommodation is for up to 12 guests split across five cabins, including a main-deck master suite that measures 6.5 metres wide and comes with an optional fold-out balcony. Below decks, two VIP cabins and two twin cabins with Pullman berths complete the guest layout. The interior décor aims to balance formality with distinctive colour contrasts, while the entertainment system can be controlled via iPad. An important innovation is the elevation of the superstructure. The location of equipment under the main deck floor results in a raised living with larger and wider windows running from floor to ceiling which transform the living into a panoramic terrace with unparalleled view. a “lounge” decorated with teak and furnished to the stylistic code of the interior with the centerpiece being a double-sided settee. Particular attention was given to alfresco areas, a design feature of Custom Line. On the upper deck the side windows integrated to the hard top offer protection from the sun and allow a panoramic view when seated. The foredeck seating/lounging area offers further generous space with a large dinette, sofa and table. There’s 220 square metres of interior floorspace and the yard’s patented dual mode transom system, allows the Custom Line 106 to launch a 5.45 metre tender and a threeperson Jet Ski, before being easily converted into a superyacht beach club. How cool is that? Moving forward and the Custom Line 106’s foredeck spans a total of 36 square metres, offering storage space for a 2.8 metre Williams Jet Tender or an additional Jet Ski. Other key areas include a superyacht sundeck that measures 53 square metres and offers respite from the midday sun via an integrated hardtop. Gallery One has recently opened its new store in Harvey Nichols, Mall of the Emirates (located on the top floor). In celebration of the brand’s newest location, artworks by famous marine artist, Alastair Houston are being exclusively showcased as part of a capsule exhibition in store, alongside photographs by Wilfred Thesiger until the end of 2018. Houston’s latest collection ‘Sea of Dreams’ features stunning scenes of the Arabian Gulf and Dubai. He said, ‘A chance meeting with a classic yacht enthusiast’ gave him the encouragement to hold his first exhibit of work in 1989, which propelled his career into the marine art field. Shoppers can also explore the rich UAE culture with historic photographs taken in the early 1940’s by Sir Wilfred Thesiger (1910-2003), one of the greatest explorers of the twentieth century. Unique limited edition pieces will be available for sale, at the capsule exhibition in store. The exhibition also commemorates the ‘Year of Zayed’ celebrations, with photographs of the late Sheikh Zayed bin Sultan Al Nahyan, the Founding Father of the UAE, who passed away in 2004. Houston was given privileged access aboard traditional racing dhows off the coast of the UAE. From here, he has sketched many of the recognizable scenes featured in these paintings. A b out t he A rti st A l a st air Ho usto n Born in 1965 in Scotland, Alastair Houston was brought up in the village of Fairlie on the Clyde Estuary on Scotland’s west coast. Alastair began sailing with his family from an early age. As a boy, his weekends and holidays were spent sailing around the west coast. In later times, the family cruises would take in further destinations including Norway and Spain. After leaving school early and spending time travelling around Europe it was not long before he began working on the sailing yachts in the Mediterranean. Having always done a little painting at school and in spare time, a chance meeting with a classic yacht enthusiast gave the encouragement to hold the ﬁrst exhibit of work in 1989 and so launched his career in the marine art ﬁeld. This chance introduction to the traditional boats happened while working in a shipyard in Spain. Alastair found a subject that ‘looked good’ in the water, the appeal of these restored traditional craft as an art subject was further enhanced by the circuit of ‘Classic yacht’ regattas held in the Mediterranean. He has been a regular participant of this circuit, painting and exhibiting at the various venues for these gatherings. Although his subject is predominantly traditional craft Alastair has exhibited the subjects of Oil exploration in the North Sea as well as modern yacht racing scenes. Other exhibits have included travelling and painting the scenes countries coasts like China and New Zealand. His work in the UAE demonstrates his passion for the region and its nautical heritage. www.g-1.com 44

IN MARCH 2017, Ferrari kicked off its 70th year anniversary with the world premier of its most powerful production car yet, the 800-cv 812 Superfast. The unveiling of this flagship V12 berlinetta is a particulary significant moment, as Ferrari’s noble V12 heritage has its roots in the founding of the company, 70 years ago to this year. Ferrai remains to this day the only manufacturer to have continuously produced sports cars with 12-cylinder engines throughout that time. Here, we trace the illustrious lineage of the Ferrari V12, charting the impeccable inspiration that has created a truly modern motoring icon; the 812 Superfast.

550 Maranello (1996 – 2002) After 30 months of development, the Ferrari 550 Maranello was presented in July 1996 at the Nurburgring racing circuit in Germany. The 550 Maranello marked Ferrari’s return to a front-engine, rear-wheel drive layout for its its 2-seater 12-cylinder model, 23 years after the 365 GTB/4 Daytona had been replaced by the mid-engined Berlinetta Boxer. The model name referred to the 5.5-litres total engine displacement and to the town of Maranello, home to the Ferrari headquarters and factory. Both the exterior and interior design were executed by Pininfarina, the favoured designer of the time. Frame and main engine components were shared with the 2+2 Ferrari 456, although at 2,500 mm (98.4 in) the 550’s wheelbase was 100 mm (3.9 in) shorter. The 550 used a front-engine, rear-wheel drive transacle layout, with the six speed gearbox located at the rear axle together with the limited slip differential. It achieved a top speed of 320km/h and could accelerate from a standstill to 100km/h in 4.4 seconds. In 2002 the 550 was replaced by the 575M Maranello, an all-around improved version or modificata of the car, fitted with a larger 5.75-litre engine. In total 3,083 units of the 550 Maranello were produced.

575M Maranello (2002 – 2006)

Ferrari chose the 2002 Geneva Motor Show for the official launch of its latest GT car: the 575M Maranello. The key elements of the new 575M Maranello could be neatly summed up in the model name. In fact, the engine was described by the new numerical code, 575, as an abbreviation of its capacity, increased from 5,500 to 5,750 cc, resulting in an increase in both power and torque. The letter M, an abbreviation of ”modificato” (modified), underlined the fact that changes have been wrought to all areas of the model’s performance. Key amongst these, apart from the engine, was the introduction of an F1-style gearbox, the first time this had been applied to a 12-cylinder Ferrari road car. When it came to the style of the vehicle, Ferrari sought to retain the balance and sober looks of the 550 Maranello which had ensured it the status of instant classic, perfectly in keeping with Ferrari’s return to a front-engined high performance car. Modifications were limited to those regarding technical changes: different shape and size for the air intakes in the new front end of the car, with refinement of the aerodynamic and fluiddynamic efficiency and a new treatment for the front spoiler. Finally, the light clusters were redesigned, with colour-coded headlamp bodies and grey surround, combined with xenon technology for the dipped beam and headlamp washers. wheels were also a new. On the aerodynamic front, Ferrari’s engineers improved airflow around the wheels by introducing small flaps to reduce drag, while the underbody was designed to generate downforce while reducing drag. The objectives for the new V12 engine in the 575M Maranello were to increase both the power curve as well as the torque. It enjoyed a maximum power output of 515 bhp (379 Kw) at 7,250 rpm and a maximum torque of 60 kgm at 5,250 rpm (588.6 Nm,), with an increase in mid-range torque of 1.5 kgm between 1,000 and 4,000 rpm compared to the previous engine fitted to the 550 Maranello.

599 GTB Fiorano, (2006 – 2012) Fiorano after the circuit Ferrari uses to hone the performance of its track and road cars; GTB as in Gran Turismo Berlinetta after the most famous Ferrari berlinettas ever built; and 599 to reflect the displacement of its V12 engine divided by 10. The stunning new all-aluminium two-seater was unveiled at the 2006 Geneva Motor Show, setting a new benchmark of excellence in the sports car world. ergonomics and safety. The result achieved the absolute pinnacle of achievement in terms of thoroughbred Ferrari sportiness and technology. The new Ferrari 599 GTB Fiorano sprinted from 0 to 100 km/h in an astonishing 3.7 seconds and boasted a top speed in excess of 330 km/h. However, it was the new model’s uniquely innovative content that guaranteed superior driving pleasure, handling and sportiness. The technical specification of the engine spoke for itself: 5999 cm3 displacement, a specific power output of 103 hp/litre (a first at the time for a naturally aspirated production engine of this displacement). The Pininfarina-designed Ferrari 599 GTB Fiorano replaced the last in that great line of berlinettas, the 575M Maranello, of which – together with the 550 Maranello introduced in 1996 – no fewer than 5,700 were been produced. The Ferrari 599 GTB Fiorano also owes a debt to Alcoa for its all-aluminium space frame, and to Delphi for its innovative suspension system.

F12 Berlinetta (2012 – 2017)

When releases at Geneva Motor show in 2012, the F12berlinetta turned heads, as Ferrari’s most powerful product to date. Known as the F12, the F12berlinetta replaced the 599 family to deliver unparalleled performance. Its direct-injection, 6,262cc normally-aspirated V12 engine introduced a new generation of innovations, winning awards, bulding passion. Sensuous design and aerodynamics - two automotive goals often at odds - were 100 percent synchronized in F12berlinetta. Pininfarina and Ferrari Style Center exceed expectations with brilliant style and balanced proportions. Though it is largely original in looks, many signature elements from the grand Ferrari V12 history remained. Despite compact exterior dimensions, the F12berlinetta offered superb cabin space and comfort. Designers also left room for innovation. The F12berlinetta uses the smart Aero Bridge where the hood and front fenders meet to create downforce. In a similar vein, Active Brake Cooling opens air ducts only when the brakes reach a threshold temperature. The result was extreme aero efficiency, a fact borne out by the F12berlinetta’s drag coefficient of just 0.299, while also generating 271 pounds of downforce at 125 mph. The naturally aspirated 6.3 litre Ferrari V12 engine in the F12berlinetta won the International Engine of the Year Awards 2013 in the Best Performance category and Best Engine above 4.0 litres. The F12berlinetta was also named “The Supercar of the Year 2012” by car magazine Top Gear. In 2014 it was awarded the XXIII Premio Compasso d’oro ADI. Accepting the award was Ferrari’s Senior Vice President of Design, Flavio Manzoni. 54

Its aimed at coinnoiseurs demanding the most powerful and exclusive Ferrari in the range: an uncompromising sports car that will deliver exhilarating driving both on road and track yet also be comfortable enough to allow its owners enjoy it as an all-round experience. Powered by a new 6.5-litre V12, the 812 Superfast is the benchmark in the mid-frontengined sports car segment, achieving its maximum power output at 8,500 rpm, which ensures the kind of thrilling top-end performance that is the exclusive characteristic of Ferrariâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s V12s. Maximum torque is 718 Nm @ 7,000 rpm, a significant 80% of which is already available at 3,500 rpm, improving driveability and pick-up at low revs. The 812 Superfast is striking for both its highly innovative design and aero package, as well as its unparalleled handling. It is the first Ferrari to introduce Electric Power Steering (EPS) which, in line with Ferrari tradition, is used to fully exploit the potential of the car in terms of performance. mobile phones. Practical luxury, anyone? The interior of this Maserati is built around an intuitive, user-friendly driver interface. The central console incorporates the driving modes’ buttons alongside the gearshift. Other on-board settings can be adjusted via the Maserati Touch Control Plus (MTC+) at the centre of the dashboard, or on the steering wheel controls for the 7” TFT display. The infotainment system of the Ghibli, is based on a high resolution 8.4” capacitive touch screen and offers compatibility with both Apple CarPlay and Android Auto mirroring functions. The central lower console’s rotary knob is a high quality forged aluminium component offering intuitive control of audio volume and other infotainment system functions. As we started to fully appreciate all of the details that have so lovingly been put into the design of this car, it was time for us to get out on the road. The sound of a petrol 600 V6, Twin-Turbo – direct injection GDI engine is enough to put an instant smile on anyone’s face. In truth, we were not expecting the kind of power we felt as we eased down on the accelerator. With a displacement of 2979cc’s and 2250 Nm of Torque, this car is no toy! Bulleting from 0-100 km/h in only 5.5 seconds and a top speed of 267 km/h, we could only chucckle as we felt our bodies pressing back against our seats. Complete with an 8-speed ZF automatic AT8 – HP70 gearbox, the Ghibli effortlessly eats up any road put in front of it whilst giving one a sense of full control thanks to the abundance of grip and handling on offer. This is one fun car to drive – and looks stunning too! By the time we had to give back the keys, we knew we had only touched upon the experience that the new Maserati Ghibli offers.
