Greetings ocean enthusiasts, and welcome to our summer edition of Hadag magazine. The next couple of months will be quiet for all but the most dedicated of us, as soaring temperatures drive us indoors, and boats across the region are carefully covered and put into hibernation for the summer. However, that’s not to say we should be completely inactive, as now is the time that many expats leave the Gulf for other countries, and so those looking for a good deal on a secondhand boat or a coveted spot in the most popular marinas should choose this time to be on the hunt! Featured this month is the beautiful Heesen 47m class superyacht, the ASYA, the second to be delivered with the redesigned hull. It’s NOT the same as the Heesen yacht sketched below, but we just liked the image... As we sail through the Gulf we put our spotlight on Qatar this issue, which boasts so many excellent options when it comes to marine leisure facilities, from world-class marinas to yacht clubs at five-star hotels, beautiful islands, remote beaches, colourful ocean wildlife and more. What has also occurred to us as we’ve travelled through the Gulf is that all of the countries we’ve visited so far are making commendable efforts to keep their rich and ancient maritime heritage alive. We’ve seen this with the dhow builders in Bahrain, the dhow racing in Abu Dhabi and the region as a whole, and now in Qatar, with the Katara Traditional Dhow festival, where ancient boat-building practices are celebrated and kept alive by their support for the industry across the region. The restyling of the 47m class Heesen yachts was carried out by the renowned Frank Laupman of Omega Architects. ‫ من‬47 ‫تم تصميم هيسين‬ ‫قبل فرانك المبمانمصمم‬ ‫أوميغا للهندسة‬ . ‫المعمارية الشهير‬

he exterior design of the new 47m class yachts from Heesen was carried out by the renowned Frank Laupman of Omega Architects, combining elegant traditional lines with contemporary flair, a marriage emphasised by the continuous glass windows and matching black paintwork on the main deck and upper decks. The restyling includes a significant improvement in the housing of the rescue tender in an enclosed bay in front of the wheelhouse, a remarkable achievement considering the yacht is under the 500GT threshold. This additional touch of grace means the lines of the forward section of the iconic yacht now look smooth and clean. concerns the crew accommodation, which complies with LY3 regulations. Simplicity as the ultimate form of sophistication is the guiding principle of ASYA’s interior design. Her sophisticated interior from the London-based and awardwinning studio Bannenberg & Rowell has a distinctly Far Eastern, restful feel, inspired by the designs of Dieter Rams, Frank Lloyd-Wright and Tadao Ando. It combines silver-grey oiled oak, mid-gloss lacquer, silk and bronze with contrasting dark Makassar ebony and polished stainless steel detailing and accents. Powered by two MTU8V 4000 M63 diesel engines, M/Y ASYA’s well-engineered full displacement steel hull with bulbous bow provides smooth passage for a maximum speed of 15 knots, which exceeded the contractual speed by 0.8 knots. M/Y ASYA is the expression of Heesen Yacht’s ability to create unique and awardwinning vessels with naval architecture and engineering based on a proven and successful design platform. “Working to a proven design platform allows us to deliver an exceptional yacht in less than 24 months with industry leading quality and performance specifications,” says Mark Cavendish, director Sales and Marketing “This provides our customers with the confidence to purchase a vessel whose performance has been tested and constantly improved.” Following her launch, Asya remained at the Oss harbour for final construction and for the commissioning of all her systems. Launched in the summer of 2014, the Alen 68’s original design was the result of a client’s desire for an elegant and distinctive motoryacht that could carry up to 16 people on day trips and include a comfortable stateroom for overnight trips. To cater to the client’s wishes, Alen Yacht joined forces with renowned international architects Foster + Partners to create the Alen 68, merging innovative technology from land construction with boatbuilding expertise to created a fast, agile craft combining the elegant social spaces of a cruising yacht with the fun of a day boat. It features one master suite and generous entertaining space at the prow – this arrangement is highly flexible and subsequent yachts in the series can be specified with up to three cabins. A stair leads down to the prow of the yacht, where the truly unique lounge is reminiscent of an exclusive club’s VIP area. It is naturally toplit by a central strip of glazing, as well as two side portholes. The versatile, open-plan layout can accommodate up to twelve guests, as well as creating private niches for relaxing. To the stern is the master suite, with a double bed and leather chaise longue, and the galley and bathroom are in the centre of the boat. Every detail has been considered and prototyped, from the bathroom drawer that extends into a compact vanity unit, to the placement of grab rails, which are seamlessly

integrated with the structure. Above deck, the bespoke furnishings include a modular unit of three sun loungers. Maximising the flexibility of the space, two further black fabric recliners are arranged on either side of the wooden foredeck and the yacht also has space for a large tender, jet skis and paddle boards. At the helm there is a conventional wheel and state-of-the-art automatic controls, as well as cameras for full visibility. The bench along one side of the outdoor dining table also functions as the driver’s seat – it can be elevated in its entirety to allow the whole family to sit ‘up front’ and steer a course. A black fabric shading screen, like the cover of a sports car, can partially or fully enclose the seating area to protect the yacht in all weathers. The 70-metre Feadship Siran recently completed a nine-month refit at the Feadship yard in Makkum, ensuring that the superyacht features the newest technologies and meets the owner’s current requirements. The last of seven magnificent Feadships to be designed by the legendary Jon Bannenberg, Siran was considered a revolutionary yacht in many ways at the time of her launch in 1991. Her radically styled windows and the innovative tender positioning were among many notable features. Safwa Marine, an independent yacht management company based in Abu Dhabi, recently opened its new Yas Marina headquarters and retail facility with an official launch ceremony. The new facility will offer a full range of services to the luxury yacht sector, including service and repair, charter and sales as well as offering a range of chandlery items. Chairman Khaled Al Rashedi commented: “We are very proud of our achievements since we launched in 2014. We aim to constantly offer bespoke and unique services to the yachting industry that differentiate us from others in the market.”

Ronautica Middle East, operator of The Pearl-Qatar’s three marinas, announced last month that Porto Arabia Marina has been awarded a ‘5 Gold Anchors’ rating by the Yacht Harbour Association. Traditional Dhow Festival

The annual celebration of the region’s maritime heritage hosted in Qatar’s cultural centre brings traditional Arabian sailing boats from across the region together in one colourful spectacle.

Each year, Qatar’s cultural village, Katara, which is located on Doha’s coastline just north of West Bay, hosts an international traditional dhow festival, with the aim of celebrating the region’s sailing traditions and maintaining the ancient art of dhow building. The Traditional Dhow Festival’s fourth edition was staged in November of last year, with His Highness Sheikh Hamad bin Khalifa al Thani inaugurating the event and attending the opening ceremony. The opening ceremony was held in the presence of the Minister of Culture, Arts and Heritage HE Dr Hamad Bin Abdulaziz al Kuwari, Katara’s Director-General Dr Khalid Ibrahim al Sulaiti and the festival’s Director Mr Ahmed al Hitmi, in addition to a number of ambassadors and VIP guests. Overall, more than 40,000 visitors took part in the festival’s opening day celebrations. Last year’s festival hosted five maritime competitions; traditional sailing, free diving, pearl diving and rowing, as well as the best dhow contest. The ‘Fateh Al Khair’ team from Bahrain won QR200,000 for collecting the biggest amount of pearls (14,264) during the three-day contest. Mohammed Abdullah al Saada from Qatar took home QR100,000 for winning the free-diving contest, in which he managed to hold his breath for an incredible 5 minutes and 30 seconds under water. The sailing competition’s winners were also crowned, with Raslan team winning the first place and the QR100,000 prize. As for the rowing competition, the teams that secured the first four spots on Wednesday, all from Oman, were awarded QR100,000, QR70,000, QR50,000 and QR30,000 respectively. 40

Finally, Qatar Museums Authority’s Fateh Al Khair won the coveted ‘Best Dhow’ contest, and the QR100,000 prize. However, in 2014 the judges found the contest to be highly competitive, and in an exceptional move decided to honour two more dhows with QR50,000 each. The two honourees were Bahrain’s Al Khalfaniyah dhow owned by Abdulaziz al Shahin, followed by Kumzar dhow of Mohammed Abdullah al Kumzari from Oman.

Culture and Music It is not just dhows that are celebrated at the festival, but the region’s maritime culture as a whole. The festival featured the participation of three folk groups from Qatar, Oman and Bahrain that roamed the beach’s walkways while chanting and doing the Arabian Peninsula’s signature clap, in a performance that resurrected the musical traditions of the region’s founding fathers. To give the festival a ‘time-hop’ feel, the on-beach Heritage Village was re-designed to simulate the Qatari architecture of the 1940s. The village hosted 38 exhibitors from India, Zanzibar, Oman and Bahrain among a number of other countries. During the five days of the festival, the artisans of the on-beach workshops performed live demonstrations of 16 ancient maritime professions that were popular in the pre-Oiland-Gas era to the festival’s guests. Besides the ‘Al Tabaa’ operetta, the festival’s musical numbers included ‘Al Qafal’ operetta, as well as the traditional ‘Al Dashah’ event, which celebrated the seamen’s departure as they went on their three-day pearl diving trip, as part of the dhow festival’s competition program. Katara’s beach visitors also had the chance to learn about the rituals of pearl diving, by watching a full crew on board a traditional diving vessel with tools and equipment, which they used to dive into the depths of the sea to extract oysters and pearls. Overall, the event was lauded as a huge success, and plays an important role in maintaining the region’s ancient maritime traditions. 42

Seawings are fast becoming the word in adventure and luxury sightseeing in the UAE. Originally plying their trade from the jetty at Dubai Creek Golf Club, taking tourists up on breathtaking aerial tours of Dubai, Seawings now flies the length and breadth of the Emirates, from Sir Bani Yas to Ras Al Khaimah. “Seawings was founded in Dubai in 2007 by the company’s CEO, Stuart Wheeler,” explains Darren Brews, Marketing Manager, Seawings. “He saw a potential for a new and unique way to showcase Dubai and its incredible progress from the air.” The company currently operates three Cessna Caravan 208 Amphibious aircraft. They can operate on both land and water, making them highly versatile, with each aircraft seating up to nine passengers and one pilot. A trip on one of Seawings’ light passenger aircraft is very far removed from the cosseted luxury of a big jetliner. The roar of the turbo-prop engine and the white spray of the water as you barrel down the creek for take-off is an all-encompassing sensation. Once airborne, you feel every wind, breeze and air current in this light aircraft, making for a truly exhilarating experience. However, it is the spectacular aerial views of the mangroves, coves, islets, landmarks and city skylines that will dominate your memories of the flight. Cruising above the city and coastline at a height of only a couple of thousand feet, there are few ways more impressive to take in the incredible skyline of Dubai and its record-breaking Burj Khalifa, or the spectacle of Abu Dhabi’s Yas Marina Circuit, Ferrari World and Emirates Palace than from the air. We enjoy perfect weather in the Gulf throughout winter, so why look for the same elsewhere in the summer? Why not go to the other extreme and head off to the Arctic Circle for a change? It might surprise you to learn that temperatures in some parts of the Arctic Circle can reach as high as 30°C in the summer, although average temperatures hover at around 10°C. The Arctic Circle

The Arctic Circle is a region that is defined as anywhere north of the circle of latitude of the same name. The Arctic Circle is the southernmost latitude in the Northern Hemisphere at which the sun can remain continuously above or below the horizon for 24 hours, at the summer solstice or winter solstice respectively. There are only eight countries in the world that have all or part of their territory in the Arctic Circle, namely the United States (Alaska), Canada, Russia, Norway, Sweden, Finland, Greenland and Iceland. 56

Can you tell us in your own words a little about your profession and what you do?

My day job is a customs employee in Saudi Arabia, but I’m also a qualified PADI diving instructor and passionate diver. I’m also an amateur underwater photographer, dedicated to taking pictures of the ocean and marine wildlife. I use a Canon 6D with a waterproof rig. And what sparked your keen interest in the environment?

My interest in photography and the marine environment stems from the beauty of what my eyes saw when I was diving, and the charm of the sea and the natural treasures of coral reefs.

And how did you get involved in the world of photography?

I entered in to the world of photography because I wanted to transfer all the beauty of what I was seeing whilst diving to the eyes of others, and show them a world they have never seen before. What has been the highlight of your career so far?

What is most important to me is the enjoyment and happiness that me and my colleagues and fellow divers get from what we do, and there have been many good times, I can’t choose only one!

What advice would you give to young people who would like to pursue a similar career?

I would advise every young man and woman to try the diving experience for themselves, to see for themselves the beauty of nature, and hopefully be inspired to protect and preserve the environment in order to enjoy this beauty in the future. What are your plans for the future?

My ultimate ambitions, God willing, are to be a great diving instructor and teach many others to enjoy the marine environment, and perhaps one day to be a professional photographer in this area as well.

Their Habitat: A demersal fish living in coral reefs and rocky areas. Diet: Feeds on the surface fish and cephalopods and crustaceans.

Grows to a maximum length of 49cm. General Features: : A rectangular body compressed from both sides and body covered with small scales, and the colour tends to yellowish-gray at the top of the body. Their Habitat: A demersal fish living in sandy areas near the rocky and coral reefs and in grassbed areas. Diet: Crustaceans and small fish and marine invertebrates.

The whole body is covered with small disc-shaped scales, sleek characterized by colours of painted golden yellow with black cross lines. Their Habitat: Demersal fish commonly found in the sandy seabeds, also near rocky and coral reefs. Diet: Feeds on crabs and shrimp and shellfish, as well as mollusks, small fish and seaweed.

Method: Wash the potato and cut into thick strips. Deep fry the potato chips on 140°C for 8 minutes and place on some kitchen paper. When the chips have cooled down, deep fry on 180°C for 4 minutes until golden brown. Sprinkle with pepper, salt and Cajun spices.

Wash the beans and cut off the ends. Blanch them for about one minute in boiling salted water. Sautee them in a pan with butter and salt.

Marinade the tuna steak with olive oil, salt and pepper. Heat up a pan to a high temperature. Sear the tuna on both sides, place inside a preheated oven (180°C) until medium (still pink in the middle).

Cut the pomegranate and take out the seeds. Cut one yellow capsicum into small cubes and mix with the pomegranate. Add salt, pepper, olive oil, lemon juice and chopped basil and mix well. Serve as shown above.

Ingredients Serves 2

Tuna Tartare 240g Tuna fillet (sushi quality) 10g Lemon oil 1 pcs Small shallot 2 pinch Japanese lemon pepper Maldon sea salt Piment d’Espelette Avocado salsa 1 pcs Avocado 1 pcs Lime 1 pcs Small red chili 1 pcs Ripe vine tomatoes Salt and pepper Herb Salad Frisee (only yellow leafs) Mixed cress Picked herbs (coriander/parsley/basil/chive) Lemon juice Olive oil

Method:

Cut the tuna into very small dices, using a really sharp knife to avoid mashing it. Dice the shallots finely. Mix the ingredients together, adding lemon oil and Japanese lemon pepper. Season with Maldon sea salt, freshly ground black pepper and Piment d’Espelette. Cut the avocado in half, removing the stone and skin. Put the flesh in a bowl, drizzle the juice of half a lime over it and mash the avocado with a fork. Blanch the tomatoes for around ten seconds in boiling water, remove them and cool them down in a bowl of ice water. Peel the tomatoes and remove the insides of them. Cut the tomato flesh down to small cubes. Add it to the avocado and season with some chopped chilli, salt, pepper and the remaining lime juice.

Plating:

Place a small round mould in the middle of a plate. Fill the bottom part of the mould with the Tartare mix, compress it carefully and top up with avocado salsa. Mix the lemon juice and olive oil together and season with salt, pepper and sugar. Pour over the herbs and let them marinade for a few minutes, before placing the herbs carefully on top of the tuna timbale. Decorate the plate with a few drops of lemon oil, a pinch of Piment d’Espelette and some balsamic reduction.

The new Audi Q7 is almost a quantum leap forward for the model in terms of technology and features. While it boasts the same industry leading Quattro all-wheel-drive system and driver safety systems as last time, there are now a raft of new additions and driver assistance systems that really take it to another level. The 2015 Q7 comes with the new 3.0l turbocharged V6 TFSI engine, putting out 333PS and 440Nm of torque in a smooth, linear delivery that really complimented the excellent driving experience. For the European markets there was also the 3.0 TDI turbo diesel which we were fortunate enough to try, though this won’t be coming to the Middle East, which is a shame because we thought it was excellent. This new model is also much lighter than its predecessor, 325kg, to be exact, thanks to wider use of aluminium and other lightweight 88

materials in its construction. All this equates to increased fuel efficiency of 27% for the petrol engine, making it the best in its class. The passenger experience in the Q7 is second to none. The car is extremely spacious and comfortable, with the added practicality of an optional extra third row of seating to carry seven. The ride comfort is impressively smooth, even for a luxury SUV, thanks to the (optional) adaptive air suspension. It is also incredibly easy to drive, with light, responsive steering, and good allround visibility aided by a 360 degree parking camera. And we haven’t even started on the new technologies yet! Listing them all in detail would be impossible, so we’ll just go through some of our favourites: There is the pedestrian warning and brake assist, which will stop the car from running over someone walking into the road; there’s the

oncoming collision brake assist, which will stop you turning into an oncoming car; there is driverless parking for both parallel and perpendicular spaces, and finally; optional Android-based Audi tablets in the back featuring games, information and entertainment to keep kids both big and small quiet in the back on long journeys! The infotainment system was one of the best we’ve seen, especially when mated to the stunning optional Bang & Olufsen premium speaker system. The navigation system uses Google Maps as an interface, which has the option of showing the Satellite imagery for a super clear view of the road. Overall, there was really nothing we could find fault with in this new Q7 – everything in it has been taken to a whole new level. Audi have really come out swinging with this one, and we think the sales figures will speak for themselves.

The A5 is a pioneering new project by Icon Aircraft. It is a compact light-sport plane with automatic fold-away wings that is usable on both land and sea. However, it can also be launched from a suitable boat ramp or beach, or even from the tender bay of a large yacht, and take off from the water, negating the need for an airfield completely. Despite its compact size, the Icon A5 doesn’t compromise on comfort. One of the secrets to the success of Officine Panerai is its ability to combine a fine tradition, which is always at the foundation of each new design, with a continuous thrust towards the future and innovation. In 2010 Officine Panerai amazed the world of watchmaking by offering the Luminor Submersible for the first time with a case of bronze, an ancient material with unmistakable nautical associations, which is personalised by ageing with the passage of time. Officine Panerai’s Workshop of Ideas now presents a remarkable new technical innovation which makes each example of this new Luminor Submersible different from the others. The case is made of carbotech, a composite material based on carbon fibre, never before used in the world of watchmaking. As well as providing exceptional technical performance, carbotech has an uneven, matt black appearance, which varies according the cutting of the material, the result being that each example is unique. It is used to make the case, the rotating bezel and the lever bridge protecting the winding crown. To form the plates of carbotech from which these components are made, thin sheets of carbon fibres are compressed at a controlled temperature under high pressure together with a high-end polymer which binds the composite material, making it even stronger and more durable. The mechanical benefits of carbotech are much higher than those of similar materials or of other materials used in the world of watchmaking, such as ceramics and titanium: carbotech is lighter than these and much more resistant to external solicitations, as well as being hypoallergenic and not subject to corrosion. While the technology of the material looks to the future, every detail of the design of the watch is faithfully inspired by the history of the brand.
