The Next Chapter Hello ocean lovers, and welcome to the second issue of Bahrain’s first marine lifestyle magazine. Once again, we bring you in-depth coverage of anything and everything to do with yachting, boating and fishing in the Kingdom. This month, we have three stunning yachts featured, the cover feature being the superb Zeelander Z44, a beautiful craft that combines classic styling and modern luxury to create something truly special. Also featured is the Ferretti 650 flybridge from Ferretti Yachts, supplied in Bahrain by ART Marine, as well as the Riva 68’ Ego Super sports cruiser, a yacht built on the success of the 68’ Ego. And while we enjoy our leisure trips to sea, it can be easy to forget those who are constantly working to make sure we’re safe and sound whilst doing so. So, this month we also spotlight Bahrain’s excellent Coast Guard service, and look into the history of the organisation right back to the days of its founding. For those of you looking farther afield for your nautical adventures, we’ve included a feature on the spectacular Adriatic coastline of Croatia, where coastal cruises are fast becoming a massive industry in the everflourishing European country. A
s yachts become ever more modern, with cold colours, angular lines and futuristic design, it’s refreshing to see a manufacturer going in the opposite direction. We’ve seen it with brands like Riva in Italy, whose beautiful, classically-designed wooden speedboats can be seen ferrying the rich and famous across Lake Como when the weather is fine. And here we can see it with Zeelander, who add a touch of elegance to their vessels with curved, flowing lines and natural materials to give them a much more classic aesthetic. One such example is this, the beautifully proportioned Z44. The result of years of dedication, collaboration and refinement, the Z44 offers excellent ease of operation and functionality. Carefully designed to heighten every onboard experience, the Z44 provides every passenger with a 360-degree panoramic view by virtue of the comfortable raised seating areas. The carefully conceived cockpit affords excellent visibility with the added luxury of an oversized sunroof that can instantly convert the wheelhouse into an alfresco entertainment area. This adds to the overall enjoyment of being in command of a Z44.
True Craftsmanship
The gleaming hull accentuates the curved and classic lines and is the result of hundreds of hours of personal attention from the skilled Zeelander craftsmen. Every surface is covered in high gloss metallic paint with the super structure in a starburst white metallic paint that gives the Z44 a finish no other manufacturer is utilising. Each Zeelander hull receives seven individual layers of paint and lacquer, with hand finishing between each layer by craftsmen using long-boards. The process involves a clever blend of automotive and aeronautic products to resist abrasion and ultra-violet damage. The decks are covered in Esthec brand decking for a long-lasting and maintenance free, teak deck look. Every teak plank is personally selected and hand-laid on the decks before being vacuumbedded in the deliberate single-length Zeelander style, emphasising the perfect curves and sheer of the Z44 hull and superstructure.
Beauty on the Inside
The interior of the Z44 is the perfect balance of fit and finish with a very user-friendly appeal. Entering the wheelhouse, one is surrounded by rich solid woods, glove stitched leather and book matched veneers. Supple leather seating surrounds the immense entertaining table and a custom captain’s chair serves both the dashboard and the Hadag Magazine

Stunning Ferretti 650 Debuts in Cannes Ferretti Yachts presented the new Ferretti Yachts 650, the first in a series of models that are bound to extensively renovate the brand in the range below 70 feet in length.

The first hull had already been sold to a Chinese customer, a fact that demonstrates the international success the brand is meeting with, especially in the leading market of the Asia-Pacific region. The second hull has also been sold, to a Middle East owner, while the third 65-footer (the first in the version with hard top on the flybridge) will reach the United States in 2015. “In Cannes we are presenting a yacht we strongly believe in,” explains Jeremy Tutt, from ART Marine, Ferretti Group’s distributor in Bahrain. “The initial feedback we received from the market is the best confirmation we could get. The Ferretti Yachts 650 is a contemporary yacht which skillfully combines the timeless charm of all Ferretti Yachts crafts with excellent performance in terms of both speed and range, as well as outstanding technical solutions and the highest possible safety standards. The user-friendliness of all onboard equipment goes hand in hand with impressive comfort and liveability solutions, capable of meeting the needs of the most demanding owners all over the world.” The Ferretti 650 immediately strikes the eye for its truly distinctive profile. Its outer silhouette is characterised by an aerodynamic flybridge and new fibre glass decorative elements that “cut” through the profile of the glazing in the superstructure. An unprecedented decoration connects the windows of the three cabins below deck (the master stateroom, the guest cabin, and the VIP cabin), which are extremely large so as 20

to let through plenty of natural light into all guest areas. The slender lines of the Ferretti Yachts 650 which is 19.67 metres (64.6 feet) long and has a beam of 5.25 metres (17.3 feet) - are further enhanced by the yacht’s aft area, specifically designed to ensure easy and safe tender handling and increase the guests’ onboard comfort.
Main Deck
Access to the cockpit is gained from the swimming platform, both to port and starboard, thanks to two flights of steps built in the hull; a concealed electro-hydraulic gangway can also be installed to starboard upon request. In the middle of the cockpit is a large fixed wooden table, completed by an aft sofa and four movable chairs. starboard side, has been positioned so as to maximise the ‘interaction’ between the interiors and the main deck. It is open on all sides and is ‘enclosed’ by two convenient peninsular units, a solution that allows one to fully exploit this section even as a large bar area that also opens onto the dining and living areas. Walking towards the bow, the dining area is located to starboard and is furnished with a large C-shaped sofa and an extendable glass table seating up to six people. On the opposite side is a second sofa, behind which the TV has been installed, which can also be concealed upon request.
Flybridge
The sporty design of the flybridge draws inspiration from that of the most recent models in the Ferretti Yachts range. A new aerodynamic support bracket for the radar and satellite systems has been installed aft. The alternative version can be fitted with a very aerodynamic, thin, bronze-shade hard top which shelters the sundeck in its entirety, including the large sunbathing area. In the central part, starboard, is the second pilot station, with the co-pilot sofa on the left. Behind it, the bar area has been arranged, featuring a grill and a sink; aft, the C-shaped sofa and the large table can seat up to eight people. Another spacious sunbathing area can be found at the extreme bow, on the wheelhouse.
Engines
The Ferretti Yachts 650 is equipped with Caterpillar engines, more specifically with a pair of CAT C18, a type of highly reliable engines ensuring very consistent performances, which in the standard engine configuration - a pair of 1015 mhp C18 engines – allow the yacht to reach a cruising speed of 27 knots and a maximum speed of 30.5 knots. The optional engines (1150 mhp), in turn, can push the yacht to a cruising speed of 30 knots and a top speed of 33 knots.

Building on the astounding success of the 68’ Ego, the Riva 68’ Ego Super takes the stunning craft to new levels of luxury and comfort. Presenting herself as the ultimate blend of design, comfort, performance and reliability, the 68’ Ego Super is the luxurious evolution of the Riva world. The pure lines which led 68’ Ego to win three of the most prestigious awards in the nautical world (European Powerboat of the Year, the Millennium Yacht Design Award and Croatian Powerboat of the Year) have not been altered in the Super version. However, new solutions have been chosen for the interior and exterior layouts, making the yacht even more luxurious. An accurate, in-depth study of every detail and solution has accompanied the harmony of shape and elegance of volume of the 68’ Ego Super. The astonishing results are fully in keeping with the Riva tradition – elegant and innovative. In the cockpit, the reclining sofa enables those on board to be seated in two positions, facing either the stern or the salon, and the layout is considerably different to that of the previous model in this area. In the bow, a teak table and another large sofa can accommodate up to six people, creating an open-air salon. This new relaxation area can also be protected against the sun’s rays by means of an innovative, electric awning. The attention paid to technology, a feature which has accompanied Riva yachts from the shipyard’s very origins, can also be found in the on-board systems. The 68’ Ego Super is equipped with the PLC technology-based Gi8, which is applied to the entire set of on-board systems, and it controls, manages 24

and monitors all the services. This system is particularly suitable for sporty models like the 68’ Ego Super. The interiors have been completely reexamined, according to owners’ experiences and requirements. The cabins on the lower deck have been enlarged and the deck flooring raised, guaranteeing higher ceilings for the rooms which ensures greater liveability. The primary new feature is that the main salon has been transferred to the upper deck. Closure of the cockpit by means of a crystal door ensures total privacy for owners and their guests in the living area, where there is also office space. The large side windows and one sunroof that can be opened in the bow guarantee maximum natural lighting both in the upper and lower salons, also thanks to the large, rectangular glass set to the left hand side of the dashboard, directly above the steps. The lower deck is accessed by means of a central ladder, leading to an open space area comprising a salon and the well-equipped
galley. The large windows and light colours of the durmast and the ivory-coloured upholstery means the cabins are particularly well lit. The lacquering, which takes up the Desert Sand colour of the deck, and the Dark Brown coloured leather inserts create a pleasant colour scheme which gives the environment movement and softness. The full beam master cabin is set astern, and the VIP cabin to bow. Both have ensuite bathrooms and were built following ergonomic studies to optimise the space available to the utmost. The twin-bedded guest cabin allows direct access to the day bathroom and is located in the middle of the yacht, starboard. Lastly, there is a totally independent crew cabin set astern, providing direct access from the cockpit, and equipped with a private bathroom. The racy, harmonious profile of the 68’ Ego Super brings together the features of the unmistakeable Riva style, its elegance, uniqueness, total absence of ostentation, eccentricity and show off design solutions.

Itama, a brand of the Ferretti Group, popular for the unique style of its open yachts, reaches another important objective with delivery of the first Itama 45 yacht tender in Lebanon. Entirely constructed at the shipyards of the Ferretti Group in Forlì, the new 45 model, a further evolution of the best selling Forty is again a creation of Marco Casali. The
WARDS
of the WATERs Bahrain’s Coast Guard plays a vital role in maintaining the security of the Kingdom’s coastline, from towing stricken pleasure craft back to shore to fending off unwanted ‘guests’ from international waters. As an island Kingdom, a well equipped and highly trained Coast Guard is hugely important to the security of the country. Their roles are many, but their overall goal is the maintained security and safety of Bahrain’s waters. More than a few boat owners (ourselves included) have been grateful for the assistance provided by the Coast Guard when their engines have broken down or their propellers have been damaged, being glad of a friendly tow back to shore. They also do their rounds in popular boating and fishing areas to make sure safety and security regulations are being followed, and the required permits are held. However, these are but some of the more trivial activities the Coast Guard carries out. On a more serious level, they keep a watchful eye on the horizons for potential threats and unwanted incursions that might be detrimental to Bahrain’s security. They monitor all vessels on the water for nefarious activities, and they work with other local and international security forces such as the police and the BDF to ensure high levels of training and cooperation.
History
The very first seeds of Bahrain’s modernday Coast Guard were planted towards the end of the 1930s. The first team had a Nokhitheh (Captain) and two sailors with a single vessel named ‘Hawar’, and it was based by Muharraq Bridge under the supervision of the Bahrain government police, receiving command from a government consultant. It remained that way for a few years, until in 1945 an additional four wooden ships were purchased, two under steam power, and two sailing ships, and they were used to transport goods and prisoners between Bahrain’s mainland and Jeddah, and the outlying islands such as Hawar. In 1958, two ships were purchased from the British Navy, and that year the Coast 32

Guard then consisted of a total of six vessels, a ‘Galbot’, which is a diving ship, and a total crew of 19. In 1961 the office was shifted from Bab Al Bahrain to Muharraq Furtha, and it became an independent unit operating under the command of the Bahrain government police. Government interest and support for this unit increased at the time, resulting in a total fleet of 11 ships, one ‘Galbot’ and a total crew of 39. Most of the ships were manufactured locally. In 1962, the Coast Guard Department moved to Mina Salman police station. The ongoing success of the Coast Guard’s operations resulted in the Ministry of Interior’s increased interest in developing their capabilities, and so in 1972 the Coast Guard was separated from the police and became a fully independent force responsible for the security and stability of
the Coast of Bahrain. In 1973, they were officially named the Bahrain Coast Guard. They continued to receive more modernised boats with improved speed, power and efficiency to overcome poor weather, storms and hurricanes, and the latest communication devices and rescue equipment. On the 21st of April, 1980, His Highness Shaikh Isa Bin Salman Al Khalifa patronised the opening of the new Coast Guard Base in Muharraq, and the base included many highly developed departments, including maintenance workshops, carpentry, electricity, a harbour and a lecture hall. Development didn’t stop at upgrading vessels and facilities – the Coast Guard sponsored Bahraini youth to be sent abroad to learn the latest marine sciences, as well as other training courses in Bahrain. They also trained with foreign coast guard services,

gaining experience from other countries such as America, Great Britain and Pakistan. In addition, the Coast Guard offered their services to other departments and organisations in the country, expanding their scope of operations considerably and earning the respect of the country as a whole. With the rapid economic development of Bahrain and resulting investment in maritime infrastructure and increase in shipping activity, the Coast Guard built a second base to monitor the southern end of Bahrain in Bander Al Dar. This base incorporated many departments including a multi-million dollar radar control room covering the entire of Bahrain’s territorial waters. There is also now a third base located near to the King Fahd Causeway to Saudi Arabia to patrol the Western side of the island. In addition, there is a station in each ‘Furtha’ of Manama: Muharraq, Bander Al Dar North, Ras Ria, Muharraq Bridge, and Hawar Island, including five check points. The Coast Guard’s fleet now comprises more then 80 boats of varying sizes, from larger ships purchased from Spain, Turkey and the US to high-speed boats capable of intercepting almost any kind of vessel. Hadag’s Shabana Adam caught up with the seasoned photographer to learn more about his latest project, his work process, and his inspirations…

When it comes to photography, Andrew Weaver has more than just skills. The photographer-extraordinaire is dedicated and downright daring, as we learn that for his new book Above Two Seas, Andrew was willingly harnessed to the side of a helicopter, hundreds of feet in the air, above Bahrain. And it is this intrepid approach to photography that led to so many stunning pictures of the country. “With it being such a small country, I think most people would wonder if there’s enough subject matter to actually shoot and put in a rather large book – actually there is,” Andrew explains. “It’s just that you have to be lucky enough to get up in a helicopter! “I think, generally, in Bahrain, there’s a lot more going on than people realise,” he says. “But also in terms of geography – it’s made up of more than 50 islands and interesting wildlife areas, so this is all part of surprising people with what there is here.” The book itself is divided up into four sections; Above the Skyline, which includes images of Bahrain’s architecture, infrastructure, city, streets, and neighbourhoods; Over the Sea, with photographs of fishing, boats, islands, watersports, and marine life; Beyond The City, a collection of pictures showing Bahrain’s communities, villages, landscapes, industry, and coastline; and lastly, Out of the Sand, celebrating the desert, heritage, leisure, nature, and wildlife of Bahrain. How’s that for plenty of subject matter? The Over the Sea section particularly caught our attention. Andrew highlights the importance, tradition and popularity of Hadag Magazine

many water-based industries and activities, from the old school to the modern-day. There are images of everything from fishermen going out to sea, and people on jet-skis, the dhow harbour with line upon line of the traditional wooden vessels, the containers at Khalifa bin Salman port, and even the vast coastline surrounding the 5-Star Ritz-Carlton Bahrain, Hotel & Spa. We find out that Andrew uses a pretty standard SLR – the Nikon D3X – for his photography, yet the images in Above Two Seas carry the pristine qualities of a much complex camera. His secret? Being harnessed to the side of a helicopter.

“I would hang out on the edge of the aircraft and after that it was all point and shoot,” Andrew says. “I don’t change lens very much at all and I don’t manipulate my images. The hardest part of it all was actually getting up in the air! “Of course, every picture in any book is edited to some respect,” he admits. “I edit to brightness, contrast and those sorts of areas in a picture where if it’s dark, I like to lighten it, so no manipulation just enhancements - the basics of Photoshop,” he smiles. When we ask Andrew about his photography inspirations, his answer is fitting to the impressive photos you can

see in the book. “Something nice, something unusual,” he simply puts it. “Generally I go for things that are beautiful and attractive, and maybe shooting things that are not beautiful and attractive, and making them look beautiful and attractive. “I’m guilty of always trying to make things look nice. There are great photographers out there who are good at showing the grunge and the pain - I’m more on the happy side!” We take a trip down memory lane and Andrew tells us about the first good photo he remembers snapping. “I remember taking a shot in my teens of a red rose in a milk bottle, and it had snowed, so there was snow on the rose. I took it for my mum and that was the first picture I put in a frame. “I didn’t think then that I could make a career of it, but I thought the shot was quite good,” he laughs. He’s come a long way from shooting with a Praktika (his first camera) and Above Two Seas not only represents the mesmerising landscape of Bahrain, but, also, celebrates a photographer who has well and truly made it! As an independent nation, it is now a member of the European Union, the United Nations and the Council of Europe, and is flourishing as a nation. And, because of its natural beauty, tourism has been a major factor in that success. Adriatic cruises are now one of the country’s biggest tourism sectors, with thousands of visitors flocking to Croatia to board luxurious cruise yachts and island hop up and down the country’s coastline. As a result, there are now many cruise operators offering these services, often tailored to the specific desires of different tourists. Are you on a cultural cruise, looking to take in the many heritage sights along the coast, or are you on a party pilgrimage, with a plan to stop off at every nightlife hotspot along the way? Dubrovnik
Many coastal experiences in Croatia start in the city of Dubrovnik, not least because it has its own international airport. It also boasts a seaport from which many cruises depart and which many ocean liners visit. However, it is also a highly popular destination in itself, with the old walled part of the city surrounded by medieval battlements that are a favourite spot for romantic walks around the outside of the old town. A massive appeal for many visitors these days is that the medieval streets and walls of Dubrovnik were used for much of the filming of King’s Landing in the hugely popular Game of Thrones series, and there are now specialised tours of the shooting locations to enjoy.
Historical Sites
Within Dubrovnik, there are a number of great sites to visit, including the city’s Renaissance-era Sponza Palace, and the Gothic-Renaissance Rector’s Palace, and the St. Saviour Church. Also worth a visit is the city’s most popular church, St. Blaise’s, a Baroque cathedral built in the 18th century. And then there are, of course, the city’s famous walls. Elsewhere along the coast, Hvar island is perhaps even more popular as a tourist destination, boasting a wealth of historical sites, beautiful beaches, a prosperous viniculture and a lively nightlife in the port town of Hvar. Because of these reasons, the port is often full of luxury yachts during high season, and is a highly popular cruise destination. Also worthy of mention is Mljet Island, with a stunning National Park boasting a Benedictine Museum, and Cres Island, with numerous ancient towns and monuments. Towards the southern end of the coast is Croatia’s second-largest city, Split. Also a major tourist draw, the most famous of Split’s many historical sites is Diocletian’s Palace, and ancient palace built by Roman emperor Diocletian in the 4th century AD that is still in remarkably good condition, and a UNESCO World Heritage Site. 48

Elsewhere along the coast, Hvar island is perhaps even more popular as a tourist destination, boasting a wealth of historical sites and beautiful beaches.
Party Destinations
One of the biggest attractions to Croatia is its vibrant nightlife, slated by many to be one of the best in the world right now. Islands up and down the Adriatic boast fantastic bars, clubs and parties to attract the many partycruises that sail along the coast. There are numerous operators that run party cruises, but one of the most prolific are Sail-Croatia.com. Their cruise departs from Split, where it stops at the islands of Vodice, Tisno, Zadar, Pag and Murter before returning to Split. On Tisno, the cruise takes in the Soundwave festival, one of the biggest in the country. The cruise also takes in the Zrce beach, on Pag island, which has become one of the biggest party spots on the coastline, and has become notorious for its hedonistic club scene. All along the cruise, however, there are other attractions such as waterfalls, bungee jumping and tourist sites, in case the partying becomes a little too much at any point! Although the breadth of choice can be bewildering, the good news is that most of the cruises will stop at enough destinations to satisfy even the most avid of travellers, and even if the hopping on and off gets tiresome, simply relaxing in the sunshine on the yacht itself for an afternoon or taking a dip in the crystal clear Adriatic waters is a great way to relax and unwind!

oral reefs are the forests of the oceans, providing food, shelter and a habitat for countless species of marine wildlife. Historically, Bahrain had one of the most abundant marine habitats in the Gulf, which is why it was a major trade port and why its pearling history flourished so much. However, in recent history, a combination of events and factors has had a hugely negative impact on Bahrain’s ocean habitats. The most significant of these was the a massive global coral bleaching event back in 1997, where a sudden spike in sea temperatures had a catastrophic effect on reefs around the world, not least Bahrain’s. That has since been combined with bad fishing practices, and the damage caused by dredging, land reclamation, industrialisation and desalinisation. The destruction of reefs, which can take hundreds of years to grow, has meant rapidly declining fish stocks and the decimation of ocean wildlife. It’s a problem that one sector of the Bahraini government is taking very seriously. The General Directorate for Protection of Marine Resources and Wildlife have been taking drastic, and often unpopular, measures to counteract this problem. Two of the first major steps were to call for a major survey of marine wildlife, and to introduce a legal requirement for environmental impact assessments to be completed before a large reclamation project was undertaken.
This is where Reef Arabia, or more accurately its parent company, Environment Arabia, came in. The company was set up in 2002 by Bahraini businesswoman Halel Engineer, in response to a government call for specialists to survey Bahrain’s waters. “So, Environment Arabia was primarily set up to do these environmental impact assessments and marine ecological surveys,” says Michael Aurora, one of the company’s expert divers and marine biologists. “But the logical progression from there, when you do an environmental study that show habitats have been or will be destroyed, is that you need to give something back to the environment, or compensate for the damage, and the thing we kept coming back to was artificial reefs.” Artificial reefs are structures made of a very durable marine grade concrete that can last hundreds of years in the sea, and which has 52

fishermen are becoming increasingly desperate in their hunt for ever-declining fish stocks. “When we did one project, and we had a huge 150 tonne 155m long barge, which is something you can’t really hide, and we had a flotilla of fishing boats following us to find out where we were putting the reefs, which is a problem we face,” explains Michael. However, local fisherman are not the only culprits. Recreational divers armed with spear guns are becoming an increasing problem for the reefs too. “The recreational scuba divers, who will go out with their own fancy boats, scuba gear and spear guns, will wipe the whole population of a reef out in an afternoon. There are some people who are out there doing this weekend after weekend, and it’s having a really detrimental effect. These are adult fish who would otherwise be breeding and increasing fish populations, and now they’re being taken out of the equation, and this simply isn’t fair on anyone else using the oceans for fishing, whether by net or line.” In most marine wildlife enthusiast circles, fishing with both scuba gear AND spear guns is seen as cheating and unacceptable, as it gives a distinctly unfair advantage to the fisherman. Normally, spearfishing is only condoned for free divers. Eco-Tourism

a neutral pH level to allow for a varied range of species to flourish on and around it. The structures are built to imitate naturally-occurring coral, and provide a haven for fish and a habitat for marine life such as algae, seaweeds, barnacles, and the other building blocks of a thriving reef. “I had some experience with artificial reefs going back to the early 90s, so Halel and I decided to start a new company, and that’s where Reef Arabia comes in,” explains Michael. “It was set up to design, manufacture and deploy artificial reefs in the Arabian Gulf, and we set up a partnership with a company called Reef Ball Australia. They brought with them extensive experience in artificial reefs, and we brought the local knowledge and our own experts, and by combining all this expertise we could provide something tailored for the Arabian Gulf ecology.” Reef Arabia’s work is not just pioneering in Bahrain, but also in the rest of the world, as it is still a relatively new industry, and innovations are still being made. Their work with reef models made using 3D printers in cooperation with their Australian partners saw them featured in the US edition of National Geographic magazine last year. “The very first reefs of this kind in the world were set up in Bahrain by us, and this is something we’re very proud of,” says Michael. However, they face challenges on many fronts, not least through the overfishing of the country’s waters, and Bahrain’s enduring love for seafood. The highly competitive market and the granting of too many fisherman’s licences means that
So what is the answer? Well, it could lie in Reef Arabia’s future plans for their company, which is a new division called Eco Arabia. A shift towards eco-tourism could be exactly what is needed. If resources currently being used for commercial fishing could be redirected towards a lucrative tourism industry instead, people don’t have to lose their jobs, and the oceans can still be protected. “There’s more than one use for these reefs,” says Michael. “The ones we’ve already done were for the fisheries, but there’s huge potential for eco-tourism, which is why we’re setting up Eco Arabia. These coastal tourism developments, like hotels, marinas and oceanfront residential projects, if you created a centre for diving, with underwater habitats and sculptures and so on, you could then bring tourists, school kids, take them diving, snorkelling, teach them about marine wildlife. It becomes a form of ecotourism, and a whole new activity for Bahrain. That’s where this new company, Eco Arabia, comes in, because we want to do just that. Something proactive, something educational.” This kind of tourism could also address the main issue, which is one of education. The reefs being created, as well as the fish that populate them, are part of a delicate ecosystem that is under serious threat, and it is the responsibility of everyone who uses the oceans, whether for livelihood or recreation, to protect them. The more children are exposed to this way of thinking the more hope there is that future generations will respect the oceans more. Hadag Magazine

THE Sea Shepherds Of all the environmental organisations who aim to protect the world’s oceans, none have been more active, more determined and more controversial than the Sea Shepherd Conservation Society. We talk to Samir, the organisation’s representative in Bahrain…
The Sea Shepherd Conservation Society (SSCS) shot to fame following an Animal Planet documentary series called Whale Wars, which chronicled the organisation’s ongoing battle against illegal activities by the Japanese whaling industry. According to their charter, their mission is to “end the destruction of habitat and slaughter of wildlife in the world’s oceans in order to conserve and protect ecosystems and species. Sea Shepherd uses innovative direct-action tactics to investigate, document, and take action when necessary to expose and confront illegal activities on the high seas.” Their founder, Paul Watson, was a former council member of Greenpeace, but he was voted out for his aggressive stance on environmental protection that was not in line with Greenpeace’s peaceful protest ideology. After leaving Greenpeace, Watson founded the SSCS, and became increasingly active in countering whaling and dolphin fishing activities around the world. Their activities have not been without controversy, with numerous court cases and injunctions raised against them by various governments and organisations around the world for their aggressive methods. Whether you agree with their tactics or not, you cannot argue against the fact that the SSCS sends a powerful message on ocean wildlife conservation, and their stance has gained massive support from ocean lovers around the world. One such enthusiast has established a supporter’s group in Bahrain, and the only one in the Gulf so far. “My story with Sea Shepherd started three or four years ago, when I saw Whale Wars,” says Samir. “So I contacted Sea Shepherd global and said that maybe we could do something in this region, and they liked the idea. So, I became certified as a supporters representative, and they started sending me brochures and information packs on their activities.” However, the society is not officially registered as a charitable organisation in Bahrain, as there are very strict procedures to
follow in order to do so. “We’re in touch with the relevant ministries to get approved, and Sea Shepherd Global has sent the required letters to the Embassy of Bahrain in the US, but the process is long and complicated. We are working on it,” says Samir. In the meantime, the group holds social gatherings, raises awareness on ocean conservation and participates in events to spread the word. “If anyone wants to find out more, they can check out the Facebook group, Sea Shepherd – BHN. Here, it’s not an actual society, but more a collection of enthusiasts who appreciate the work that Sea Shepherd is doing, and want to help out. Our main focus is on educating people on how to protect the oceans and their wildlife.” And that’s something that we here at Hadag can fully support! Hadag Magazine

Sea Tell us a little about yourselves …
We are a group of friends composed mainly of Ahmed Sanad, Ebrahim Fakhroo and Yaqoob Al-Muftah. Every now and then, we go out using a small boat about 16 feet in size. We normally go from Galali and then to Amwaj Islands to go fishing and diving.
A group of divers, who also go on frequent fishing trips, decided to go for a dive one day. But what seemed like a ‘normal’ day out at sea suddenly took a turn for the worse. Here we interview Rashed and Yaqoob AlMufta, who tell us their story…
What was the most difficult experience you’ve been through?
About a year ago, a day before the start of Ramadan, we decided to take a boat trip early in the morning. We went with a different group of people for the first time, and a boat, which was 25 feet which had a single engine – this was another thing new to us. Before going on the trip, we had some problems with the engine so we took it to a mechanic – who, after checking said it was in good condition. So moving forward with our plans, we took about a 45 to 60-minute cruise and after which we stopped and Yaqoob and Ahmed Sanad took a dive, with the three of us deciding to remain in the boat. That day the water current was opposite to the direction of the winds – causing a lot of water to enter our boat. Yaqoob came out of his dive and tried taking control of the situation. However, when he tried to start the engine it failed, and we didn’t carry any mobile phones with us, so we couldn’t call for help. By this time Ahmed had also come back up from his dive. One of the guys who came with us was a boat captain and full of experience but he also couldn’t do much at the time. The water kept on coming in, and due to lack of balance caused the boat to flip over on us and it sunk. Out in the water, everything else floated and Yaqoob grabbed whatever food and drink he could and stored them in the ice box. This happened at 12noon and we were located quite close to Qatar. It only took 30 minutes for all this to happen which was very surprising. From 12 noon until midnight we held onto a katra (a long inflated rubber log like which is attached to the sides of the boat. We tied the unused diving suits to one end of the log and the floater to the other end, to keep it afloat. We all held onto the log to keep us afloat but what really saved our lives was the waterproof flashlight that was in one of the diving suits. We would flash the SOS sign to seek help if there was any plane or boat passing by. 56

We eventually saw blue light coming from far away, so we kept making the SOS sign using flash light, until we could see that the source of blue light kept getting closer and closer. They eventually found us – these were members of the Coast Guard which were sent to search for us. How have things changed after this event?

- Take precautions and always put safety first, the sea is unpredictable and being out in the water can be extremely dangerous. - Never act foolishly; it could cost you your life and those of others. - Ensure that your whereabouts are known – give the exact location of your trip, how long and where you intend to be, a list of names going on the trip, etc.

Garnish:

Method: Potatoes:
Heat the oven to 165 °C. Mix the salt, black pepper, fresh coriander, garlic, and half of the olive oil together and pour over the sliced potatoes. Mix well to coat the potatoes. Put the mixture in an ovenproof dish and cook for 25 minutes. Remove from the oven, add the olives and half of the whipping cream and combine everything. Season with salt and pepper.
Fish:
Mix salt, black pepper, cumin powder, lemon juice and garlic together and rub the fish fillets with the mixture. Pour some olive oil in a sautĂŠ pan, once hot add the marinated fish fillets and fry until golden. Fry the other side until cooked through. Remove from heat. Set aside.
Jarjeer sauce:
Heat a saucepan and place the chopped onion, garlic and half of the whipping cream in the pan. Simmer. Add the jarjeer, season with salt and pepper and blend everything together.
Plating:
Using a circular mould arrange the potatoes on a plate. Remove the mould and place the fish on top of the potatoes. Pour the jarjeer sauce around the arrangement and garnish with the sliced chillies. Garnish the fish with cherry tomato, capsicum, coriander leaves and rosemary.

Method: Roasted Carrot Tartar
Cut 200g of the carrots in chunks, boil in salt water and process to purée; Cut remaining carrots into slices; season and grill until nice in colour and soft in texture; Finely chop the grilled carrots, heat the olive oil, sauté the onions and garlic, add the grilled carrots and continue cooking for 1 minute; Add the carrot purée and reduce while continuously stirring until the texture is firm. Season to taste, keep warm.
Hollandaise Sauce
Melt butter in a pan and filter through a cloth to clarify; sauté shallots in vegetable oil until glazed, add bay leaf and peppercorns and deglaze with white wine (white vinegar & water as alternative). Simmer for 3 minutes (to reduce); Whisk 3 egg yolks, 1 whole egg and the reduction in a metal bowl on a hot water bath (2 to 3 mins.). Stir the clarified butter (approx. 50°C/122°F), drop by drop and gradually, until an emulsion forms. Season with the spices and keep warm.
Coriander oil
Blend olive oil and coriander together until smooth. Season with salt and pepper. 62

Method: Bell pepper sauce
Roast the bell pepper in hot vegetable oil to loosen the skin from the flesh, set aside to cool. Clean the bell peppers by removing all skin, seeds and stem; cut into chunks. Sauté onions and garlic in olive oil, add bell pepper & sauté without giving colour. Add little water and reduce, add cream and cook for 1 more minute. Remove from heat and blend in mixer until smooth; season to taste.
Potato Purée
Peel and wash the potatoes and cut in even chunks. Boil the potatoes in light salted water until soft; remove from water to dry out. Bring the milk to boil, as well as the cream, butter and spices. Pass the potatoes through a potato press into the mixture and stir to get a smooth purée. Season with truffle oil. Keep warm.
Asparagus
Remove the stem and keep the asparagus heads about same length that’s slightly longer the fish filets. Blanch in salted water and cool down immediately to keep the colour and crunch. Sauté in little olive oil once plating the dish.

Maserati is an exotic brand, and as such, a purchase of one is not driven by the mind, but by the heart. It is never a ‘sensible’ choice to buy an exotic Italian brand, simply because they’re luxury goods, and therefore very expensive. It is therefore of the utmost importance that a Maserati appeals to the senses and the emotions above all else, because it is by winning over these that they will win over customers. I’ve driven several Maserati models over the years, and each and every one of them has been stunning it its own way, but each has also been let down by imperfections that a car of its calibre shouldn’t have. For example, a few years ago I drove a Quattroporte, and while I was impressed by its looks, its power and its ride comfort, I was equally unimpressed by a slightly dated looking interior and a very dated infotainment system. More recently, we drove a drop-dead-gorgeous metallic blue GranTurismo Sport, which was
beautiful in every single way except for, once again, the dated infotainment system. Maseratis of today, however, have addressed all of these issues, and the Ghibli is no exception. Once again, the infotainment system was the least impressive thing about the Ghibli, but not because it is dated, or poor quality. It is, in fact, extremely good, with intuitive controls, a modern looking interface, and really nice graphics on the satnav. No, the reason why the infotainment system on the Ghibli is the least impressive thing about it is because the rest of the car is so damn good! It is beautiful both without and within. From the outside, it manages to accomplish the same delicate balancing act that the Quattroporte does, boasting that classic Maserati styling whilst still looking like a car of this day and age. With smooth, sweeping lines and an aggressive stance, the car exudes an aura of power and speed, and is a pleasure to behold. Inside, the beauty continues – it is one of the best-looking interiors I’ve ever seen, with smooth, curving lines and plush leather surfaces wherever you look, and not a harsh angle in sight. It screams luxury, and makes the driver satisfied that it is worth every penny of the many thousands they’ve spent on it! To drive, it is as sublime as the rest of the Maserati fleet, combining a smooth, refined ride with impressive handling and power on tap to create a car that is truly a joy to drive. Our particular model was the standard Ghibli, boasting a twin-turbo 3.0-litre V6 with 330hp and an impressive 500Nm of torque. It’ll propel the Ghibli from standstill to 100km/h in jut 5.6 seconds, and on to a top speed of 263km/h. Figures for the Ghibli S are even more impressive – the same engine is tuned to 410hp/550Nm, and it will hit 100km/h in 5 seconds, and top out at 285km/h. The Ghibli is, without a doubt, the most complete Maserati I’ve had the pleasure to drive so far, although I haven’t driven any others of the most recent Maserati range. I think that just means I’ve got a lot to look forward to!
Maserati Takes to the Seas Exotic Italian automaker Maserati strengthens its ties with the glamorous world of yachting through partnerships with sailing legend Giovanni Soldini, and the superexclusive new Monaco Yacht Club.
The principle reason we picked the Maserati Ghibli as our featured luxury vehicle this month is its new partnership with one of Europe’s most exclusive new facilities, and an ongoing partnership with sailing legend Giovanni Soldini. The relationship between Maserati and Giovanni Soldini began in 2012, when the Italian yachtsman, who was already a solo round-the-world winner, skippered the 70 foot Maserati to set the time reference for the “monohull” category in the Cadice-San Salvador run, covering the distance in 10 days, 23 hours, 9 minutes and 2 seconds. Subsequently Soldini and his international crew, again on board Maserati, set the new record for the “Golden Route” from New York to San Francisco, rounding Cape Horn, a distance of some 13,225 nautical miles, in just 47 days, 0 hours, 42 minutes and 29 seconds, slashing the previous record. And this year, on the 14th January 2014 Soldini and Maserati were first across the finishing line in the 14th edition of the Cape2Rio race. Yacht Club de Monaco
At the inauguration of the new Yacht Club de Monaco (YCM), designed by Lord Norman Foster and already hailed as the new symbol of the Principality of Monaco, the partnership with Maserati, which this year celebrates its centenary, and one of the most prestigious yacht clubs in the world, was officially announced. Maserati will be official partner of YCM from 2014 to 2016 as well as the sole automotive sponsor of events organised by YCM. The YCM has 1300 members from 60 nations and many of the world’s most prestigious private yachts fly the Monaco Yacht Club’s burgee, testimony to its unique position on the international yachting scene. “The Monaco Yacht Club and Maserati share the same values of exclusivity, elegance and sport and they represent the excellence that has made both icons of excellence at an international level,” said Harald Wester, CEO of Maserati. Coming soon to the region (as soon as all the dealers clamouring for them can receive stock) is the Gibbs Quadski, an amphibious personal vehicle/watercraft that can transform from quad bike to jet ski within a matter of seconds! This ingenious contraption caused a stir worldwide when it was featured in the famous BBC motoring series Top Gear, when it raced an Alfa Romeo 4C around lake Como in Italy. Amphibious vehicles are no new thing, having been around since the 1800s, and they had entered into widespread military use by WWII. However, in terms of amphibious craft for personal use, this has only started to creep into the market over the last few years. And never before has an amphibious craft been so accessible as now, with the Gibbs Quadski combining the versatility, mobility and sheer enjoyment of both a quad bike and a jetski! The vehicle is based on a monocoque dual skin composite hull that also works as a chassis. It uses a version of BMW Motorrad’s four-cylinder 1.3 litre motorbike engine, as seen in the K1300, that has been customised for marine use. On land, it has a rearwheel-drive configuration, but on the sea it’s powered by Gibbs’s patented jet drive. In its amphibious form, the engine will produce 140hp on the water, but only 80hp on land, although this still translates to commendable speeds of up to around 72km/h on both land and water! You’ll get around two hours travel time on the water, but a range of around 600km on land, so it’s also perfect for applications like close shore search and rescue too, and is already being adopted by lifeguard services in the states.
What this vehicle is NOT, is a desert stunt bike, so won’t be any good for launching off sand dunes at high speeds. People who’d want to own this vehicle are those who live on or near the beach, who want to be able to ride to the beach and enjoy some water sports whilst there. Currently, the only dealership for these crafts in the region is in Jeddah, but we’ve heard that they’re planning to offer them across the region in the immediate future, so watch this space!
