2014 HARTSELLE HIGH SCHOOL
Moving up to Class 6A Tigers ready for the challenge of the toughest region in new classification
R
egion 8. That has always stood as one of toughest regions for any classification, whether it’s last year’s Class 5A or Class 3A. The competition got even stronger with reclassification. Now, the region, which features six of seven teams that made the playoffs a year ago, is one of the most competitive ever created by the Alabama High School Athletic Association. Even with that, it still doesn’t change the expectations of Hartselle’s football program.

“Our expectations are the same that they are every year,” said head coach Bob Godsey, who notched his 100th victory at Hartselle last year. “We know it’s going to be tough, but we have to be ready to play every week. There are no easy games on our schedule.” The Tigers opened with Pinson Valley Aug. 22 and it doesn’t get much easier with a much-improved Brewer team and 7A opponents Grissom and Sparkman. The Tigers also face Athens, Decatur, Austin, Cullman, Florence and

Muscle Shoals in region play. “No one’s going to pretend that it’s going to be easy for us,” Godsey said. “Anybody can win on any given night.” One area that should help the Tigers’ maturity is the amount of experience returning. The Tigers have most of their starting offensive and defensive players back for the 2014 campaign. “We had four sophomores and a freshman playing on offense in the playoff game,” Godsey said. “We had a HARTSELLE2, continued on page 6

HARTSELLE, from 5 lot of growing pains last year, but we expect the experience to help us.” One area in particular is the return of starting quarterback Jake Tiffin. “He’s really matured over the last year,” Godsey said. “That year of experience means so much for a quarterback and we’re going to expect more out of him this season.” One area that should help is the fact that Tiffin will have an experienced offensive line in front of him. “I haven’t felt this good about the experience on our offensive line since 2011,” Godsey said. “We return four starters and several have started for us for several years.” Senior Mykel Welch leads the unit, as he will be starting for his third year. Fellow seniors Kodi Kodra and Brad Lovill are also returning along with sophomores Cade Holmes and Walker Thompson filling the other offensive line positions. The Tigers lost their 1,000-yard rusher, D’Andre Mack, after his family moved TIGERS, continued on page 7

TIGERS, from 6 to Kentucky, but Godsey looks to fill that void with a running-back by committee approach. Junior Zeth Malcolm returns as the most-experienced starter followed by Zane Green, senior Jaylan Jackson and freshman Taylor Easterling, who scored the lone touchdown in Hartselle’s spring jamboree. At the receiver position, Tiffin won’t have to look hard to find Tobias Mitchell, a 6-4, 200-pound junior. Kyle Hamlett and Travis Crow return experience at the receiver position, along with Jackson’s twin brother Ja’mal Jackson. Luke Southerland will be playing some at the tight end position. “Luke had a great offseason,” Godsey said. Chance Walker and Kris Doss will be anchoring the defensive line at end and nose guard, respectively. Godsey said there was still competition for the other end position. he football crowd at Hartselle High School games has more than one reason to cheer, even if the Tigers have struggled to emerge as a dominate force in first half action. It can relax, sit back and enjoy an exciting and entertaining halftime performance by the Hartselle Tiger Marching Band. “It’s a rebuilding year for us since we lost a strong senior class,” said band director Randall Key. “Of the 22 seniors who graduated, one-third are on scholar-

We have a lot of talented young musicians coming back and it’s gong to be interesting to see how they respond to the challenge of adding their mark to a winning tradition.” He said the band would perform a disco show during football game intermissions with emphasis on music from the 1970s. “It’s going to be fun to do and very entertaining for the football crowd,” he said. Band members began rehearsing for the show at music camp July 14-18 and began putting movement to the music during band camp July 21-25. “Winning trophies is nice but not the most important thing we do,” Key pointed out. “First of all, we want to entertain our audiences and be a source of pride in the community.” The band was honored recently for its performance in the Fiesta Flambeau and BAND, continued on page 11

he Brewer High School Patriots are returning several starters from last year, especially in offensive skill positions. Head Coach Dan Styles said this is what he has been trying to implement since he came to Brewer three years ago. “This sort of lineup is what we’ve been working toward,” Styles said. “When I first came, I was playing a lot of younger guys because they were the ones who had the mentality I was looking for. “Our group is really young this year,” Farris said. “We have a lot of incoming freshmen, so our numbers have grown since last year. We have had a lot of special rookie practices and have been having band practices twice a week since July 8.” Brewer will host the Morgan County Night of Bands as a practice performance before competition season starts. They will also compete in the Hartselle band competition and three other competitions. Brewer’s drum major is Lauren Short for the second year in a row. Farris said the band will have a Veterans Day program, a Christmas con-

The band scored all ones in the state competition and had an overall successful year. Farris has been band director at Brewer for 14 years now. Assistant band directors are Patrick Dailey and Courtney Maxwell. Dailey is starting his second year with the Brewer band. Maxwell is a Brewer High School alumna and will be starting her first year as assistant band director.

2014 RULE CHANGES
Targeting added I
n an effort to reduce contact above the shoulders and lessen the risk of injury in high school football, the National Federation of State High School Associations (NFHS) Football Rules Committee developed a definition for “targeting,” which will be penalized as illegal personal contact. The definition of targeting and its related penalty were two of 10 rules changes approved by the rules committee at its January 2426 meeting in Indianapolis. All rules changes were subsequently approved by the NFHS Board of Directors. Effective with the 2014 high school season, new Rule 2-43 will read as follows: “Targeting is an act of taking aim and initiating contact to an opponent above the shoulders with the helmet, forearm, hand, fist, elbow or shoulders.” Bob Colgate, NFHS director of sports and sports medicine and liaison to the Football Rules Committee, said the committee determined – in its continued effort to minimize risk of injury in high school football – that it was important to separate and draw specific attention to this illegal act. “Taking aim with the helmet, forearm, hand, fist, elbow or shoulders to initiate contact above the shoulders, which goes beyond making a legal tackle, a legal

block or playing the ball, will be prohibited,” Colgate said. A new definition for a “defenseless player” was also added to Rule 2 for risk-minimization purposes. Rule 2-32-16 will read as follows: “A defenseless player is a player who, because of his physical position and focus of concentration, is especially vulnerable to injury.” In an effort to reduce the risk of injury on kickoffs, the rules committee approved two new requirements in Rule 6-1-3 for the kicking team. First, at least four members of the kicking team must be on each side of the kicker, and, second, other than the kicker, no members of the kicking team may be more than five yards behind the kicking team’s free-kick line. Rule 6-1-3 also notes that if one player is more than five yards behind the restraining line and any other player kicks the ball, it is a foul. In addition to balancing the kicking team’s formation, the change limits the maximum distance of the run-up for the kicking team. “The Football Rules Committee’s actions this year reinforce a continued emphasis on minimizing risk within all phases of the game,” said Brad Garrett, assistant executive director of the Oregon School Activities Association and chair of the Football Rules Committee. In other changes, new language

was added to Rule 8-5-1 and states that “the accidental touching of a loose ball by a player who was blocked into the ball is ignored and does not constitute a new force.” In addition, roughing the passer fouls now include all illegal personal contact fouls listed in Rule 9-4-3, which result in automatic first down in addition to a 15-yard penalty. The remaining changes approved by the Football Rules Committee are as follows: Rule 1-1-7: Provides state associations authority to require game officials to be on the field more than 30 minutes prior to game time. Rule 2-24-9: The intent of an illegal kick was clarified. Now, when an illegal kick occurs, the loose ball retains the same status that it had prior to the illegal kick. Rules 3-3-3 and 3-3-4: With this change, in order to extend or not extend a period with an untimed down, time must expire during the down. Football is the No. 1 participatory sport for boys at the high school level with 1,115,208 participants in the 2012-13 school year, according to the High School Athletics Participation Survey conducted by the NFHS through its member state associations. In addition, the survey indicated there were 1,660 girls who played football in 2012-13.

his year’s Danville High School Band is the biggest Danville has ever seen. With over 50 band members and a record-setting nine color guard members, the Varsity band is averaging around 20 percent of Danville’s high school population. Band director Jeremie Kinney said Danville saw a dramatic increase in numbers last year. “We have seen substantial growth in the band program at Danville in the last two years,” Kinney said. “The dramatic increase came last year, and we grew even more this year.” This year’s halftime show will be entitled “Heroes.” It will have a superhero theme with songs including the Superman theme, Spiderman theme and Batman movie theme. Kinney said the show will have a lot of visual elements and crowd appeal. “This show will be entertaining to both

the young and the old alike,” Kinney said. “It will appeal to kids who are into superheroes, both DC Comics and Marvel.” Danville’s drum majorette is McKenzie Long for the second year. The band will debut new uniforms this season as well as new themed equipment for the color guard. Danville plans to compete in three competitions during the fall. They are already planning to attend the Morgan County Night of Bands and the University of North Alabama marching extravaganza. They will also hold their annual Christmas and spring concerts. According to Kinney, the band plans to honor Kallie Cook, an upcoming eighth grade band member who recently lost a

battle with cancer. “We aren’t sure what we can do yet to honor her, but we would like to do something,” Kinney said. The color guard will host a clinic for elementary age girls to learn a short routine to be performed with the varsity color guard during halftime. Kinney is starting his 10th year as director at Danville. Bethany Beavers is the new color guard sponsor this year.

alkville football completed one of its most successful seasons in 2013, earning its second ever playoff win. You wouldn’t know it from talking with the players and coaches, however. “We don’t think about what happened last year,” said quarterback Ryan Sullivan. “We’re only looking forward to this season and not focusing on what we did last year.” Head coach Joel Schrenk said he has been fighting against complacency after the success. He also doesn’t PAGE 26
want to give his team an alibi for its lack of depth. The Blue Devils will dress only 28 players in grades ninth through 12th after 11 seniors graduated and several other starters chose to pursue other interests. Schrenk said most of his starters will have to play both ways, but he’s not using that as an excuse. “We’re going to have to have the strongest and best conditioned football team on the field,” Schrenk said. “We’re not going to slow down the pace that we play at. We play better FOOTBALL 2014
when we play fast. So, we’re just going to have do deal with it. We’re going to play with the players we have and we expect to compete.” Schrenk also said he loves how his players are students of the game. “Our players will make suggestions,” Schrenk said. “Then we will incorporate those ideas into what we do. “Sometimes, Ryan will have a feeling that we need to do something. So we do it and it leads to a big touchdown play,” Schrenk FALKVILLE continued on page 27

added. “That’s what makes it so fun to coach this team. We (the coaches) aren’t in there in the fire, but they are. They see things that we can’t see. So it’s great to get their input into what we’re doing.”
Quarterback
Sullivan returns in the backfield for the Blue Devils. He accounted for 2,615 yards of total offense as a sophomore, throwing 18 touchdowns and rushing for 16 touchdowns. He said he has a great relationship with his receiving corps, especially with receiver Logan Vinson. “We all know each other very well and we’re good friends,” Sullivan said. “Me and Logan have a great connection with each other on the field. He’s definitely one of my favorite targets.”

Band rocks out in show Falkville offers another unique show including many classic rock hits

he Falkville High School band is looking forward to another successful year of halftime shows and contests. Band director Bradley Phillips is starting his 11th year at Falkville. This year’s show will include “Carry on My Wayward Son” by Kansas, “Paint It Black” by The Rolling Stones and “Stairway to Heaven” by Led Zeppelin. Falkville’s band usually has around 35 members, and it will be under the direction of Drum Major Kelly Lockhamy for the second year. Mark Carroll is the Band Booster President.
Falkville hosted the Pacific Crest Drum Corps from California July 2425 during Band Camp July 21-31. Last year’s halftime show was titled “Every Now and Then,” which included contemporary and classic songs such as “Run Away Baby” by Bruno Mars, “Party Rock Anthem” by LMFAO, “Brown Eyed Girl” by Van Morrison and “Ain’t No Sunshine” by Bill Withers. Phillips said he has never played the same halftime show for more than a year. “I have been at Falkville for over 10 years now, and I have never re-
peated a show,” Phillips said. “It’s getting harder to come up with shows that will have recognizable songs that we can play, but I hope to continue to come up with something new each year.” The Falkville band will compete in at least two competitions throughout the year and will perform at the Morgan County Night of Bands at Brewer and the Hartselle Veterans Day Parade. Falkville received all superior ratings at their competitions last year and are looking to continue that streak.

2013 PRICEVILLE BULLDOGS
Better all around Priceville hopes productive summer will lead to playoff berth in new region
P
riceville High School football looks to strengthen its defense and work to better their program each and every day this season. Head Coach Dirk Strunk is gearing up for his fourth year as head coach at Priceville. He has a record of 9-21, which is not quite up to par with his 52-77 record in his 13-year head coaching career. Priceville lost 17 players to graduation, including almost their entire offensive line. Graduating seniors include wide receiver and kick returner Ben Patterson, fullback Zac Smith, offensive lineman Skylar Jones, offensive lineman Jordan Caver, offensive lineman Jake Long, offensive lineman and defensive end Jaycee May, linebacker Lucas Chaney, linebacker Jacob Crow, strong safety Daniel Barnett, athlete Cody Barber

and defensive end Tyler Jones. Returning starters include quarterback Kaleb Barker, wide receiver Sam Brandon, tight end Luke Mason, athlete Lamar Burch, defensive end Bryan Parker, linebacker Hunter Huckaby, defensive back Michael Whitefield, defensive back Kyle Haynes and punter Peyton Morris. Several reserves from last year are seeking starter status. Payton Morris and Aaron Cartee are both in the running for the fullback position. Heath Mann looks like he will be a slot receiver, Keaton Israel is poised to be center and Travis Weaver looks promising at right guard. Both Jenson Ayers and Andrew Pestona are being considered for the right tackle position. Strunk said several newcomers have moved in and are showing potential, including Johndale Motes,

Chris Giuntini, Micahel Buchanan and Dakota Parker. Several offensive skill players are returning to the field this year, and the defensive secondary stayed intact. Quarterback Kaleb Barker will be returning for his junior year. Last season Barker was the team’s leading rusher, averaging 5.95 yards in his 129 carries with five rushing touchdowns. Barker threw for 1,458 yards with a 56 percent completion rate, 18 passing touchdowns and 10 interceptions. Priceville is losing their next two leading rushers Zac Smith and Ben Patterson. Smith averaged 6.43 yards in his 93 carries with five rushing touchdowns. Patterson had 10 rushing touchdowns and gained 372 yards in his 60 carries. Patterson also PHS continued on page 33

led the team in receptions with 704 yards and nine touchdown receptions in 32 catches. Strunk reported Priceville had a good summer with ample participation from the newcomers and returning players. “It’s been a productive summer with good participation and all the kids working hard and staying committed these past couple of months,” Strunk said. “I really feel like we will be better all the way around. We had a 7-on-7 at Samford where we went 4-2, and at the National Select Qualifier Tournament in Foley we beat some 6A schools no one really thought we would beat.” Being in 4A Region 7, Priceville will face Pennington, Kate Duncan Smith DAR, Westminister Christian, Locust Fork, Oneonta, North Jackson and Good Hope. One day at a time Seniors raise prospects for Priceville High band
P
riceville High School’s marching band is entering into a new season of halftime shows, parade performances and competitions with 83 percent of its members back from a year ago. “We lost eight seniors to graduation and have a large class of juniors moving up for their senior year,” said Troy Allaway who is serving in his 11th year as band director. It’s good to have a big group of seniors. They will provide the leadership needed to bring on the freshmen class.” “The kids are doing great, after music and band camps,” he added. “They’re progressing at a fast pace and I’m hopeful they can maintain that PAGE 36

tempo and perform to a maximum. I’m really looking forward to directing them.” Allaway said he expects to have 140 to 150 students performing in three separate bands, sixth grade, seventh grade and grades 8-12. Of that number, 80 are enrolled in the varsity marching band. Each band performs concerts at Christmas and in the spring. The band performed on a high level in 2013-2014. Each section received an excellent rating in competitions at the “Morgan County Night of Bands” at Brewer and the “Dixie Pride Classic” at West Morgan. In February, 60 of its members marched and performed in a Universal Studies parade at DisFOOTBALL 2014
ney World in Orlando, Fla. The band also hosted its District Solo and Ensemble competition with several members receiving superior scores. Jessica White, a junior clarinet player, was selected for All-District Band honors. Currently, band members are rehearsing for their halftime show at Priceville Bulldog football games. They will perform three songs, Lynyrd Skynyrd’s “Sweet Home Alabama” and “Free Bird” and Aerosmith’s “Dream On.” Allaway commended Priceville Band Boosters, a voluntary organization, for their loyal support of BAND continued on page 37

ustin’s Black Bears are hungry for a winning season after going 4-6 last season and failing to make the Class 6A payoffs. The road to a top four finish in region 8 could not be tougher, however, with the loss of 30 seniors and 17 starters and elite teams such as Florence, Bob Jones, Muscle Shoals, Hartselle and Decatur standing in their way. “It all boils down to overcoming inexperience and building confidence,” said fifth year head coach Jeremy Perkins. “We’re going to be young in spots,” he pointed out. “Four of our five offensive linemen have never started before. We have a new quarterback and both running backs lack experience. “We have a lot of guys back who played quality snaps on defense. They’re going to be better

Perkins said he is excited about the revamped 6A, Region 8 with the addition of Hartselle, Athens, Cullman and Muscle Shoals, all former Class 5A schools. “It’s going to be one of the toughest 6A regions in the state,” he stated. “But it will be good football and I feel it will gener-
