FROM THE EDITOR

I

I love love. I love weddings. Maybe that’s why I’ve been looking forward to working on this issue of Hartselle Living for the whole of 2020. It’s probably my favorite of the year. Getting the chance to read the love stories of newlyweds in Hartselle and Morgan County just puts a big cheesy grin on my face without fail. And the photos! “All things white, bright and beautiful” pretty much sums up this issue of Hartselle Living. This one means a little more to me this year because I also got married in 2020, so I have a special connection with all of our COVID-19 brides. Planning a wedding is stressful even when there’s not a pandemic changing every aspect of our lives, so when you combine keeping track of the ever-changing coronavirus guidelines and restrictions with remembering at what point you’re supposed to send the grandmothers down the aisle plus the search for the perfect dress – it can get a little crazy. The brides and grooms in this issue didn’t let COVID-19 get in the way of their big days, even if it meant celebrating on a smaller scale, wearing masks or even getting married twice to allow for social distancing. Where there’s a will, there’s a way, right? One thing they all seem to have in common is they are all perfectly and incandescently happy to be celebrating their love. Take that, COVID. Sure, weddings in 2020 looked a little different – many people chose to delay their weddings a few months until more information was available about the virus, while some chose to mask up and limit the number people who were in attendance – but no matter what you have to go through, your wedding day is something you never forget. I know I’ll never forget mine. My dad married us on my family farm in Shelby County, and even though the crowd was small and the June heat was making us sweat a bit, it could not have been a more perfect day. I get the idea the brides and grooms featured in this issue of Hartselle Living feel the same way about their wedding days, and I hope you enjoy reading their love stories.

FAMILY LAND

Hydes call Hartselle home for generations STORY BY REBEKAH YANCEY PHOTOS BY JODI HYDE 8 Hartselle Living

“It’s almost like we live in a different time,” said Jodi Hyde in describing her home on Parker Road in Hartselle. It’s a place where her daughters play outside and come in for the night to sound of a dinner bell. Roots run deep for the Hyde family: Cody and Jodi Hyde are raising their daughters on 30 acres of family land where Jodi spent her own childhood years.

“I feel like it’s a blessing from God that I get to raise my kids here,” Jodi said. “I’ve always loved this land.” Cody and Jodi met while in college at the University of North Alabama in Florence, where Cody grew up. When they married in July 2007, they moved to Jodi’s hometown and have been here ever since. Hartselle Living 9

They are the parents to two daughters: Camryn, 10, and Katie Claire, 7. The family loves to spend time outdoors: The girls like exploring and climbing trees, and as a family, the Hydes enjoy fishing, meals at their picnic table on the back patio and leisurely walks around their property. “We live outside more than we live inside,” Jodi said. “I honestly cannot remember the last time we turned on the TV. The weather has been so nice.” Animals are plentiful on the Hyde homestead, too. The family owns two horses and a pony – named Peanut, Biscuit and Ms. Kitty – and three dogs, Bud, Spark and Scout. The family home was designed and built in 2010 by Jodi’s parents. “My mom drew the house plans and made sure there was no wasted space, and my dad cut all the wood in his own sawmill,” Jodi said. “Cody found the pecan wood we used for the kitchen cabinets.” Sentimental heirlooms, from furniture and artwork to décor that has been passed down from both sides of their family, fill the home. The stained glass in Jodi said one of her favorite parts about her home is the amount of natural light it provides.

When the front porch was under construction, Camryn – who was a year old at the time – put a penny in the mortar. Jodi said Camryn loves to show off “her penny” and tell the story to anyone who visits.

FINDING THE BEAUTYÂ WITHIN Hartselle woman sparks natural beauty as makeup artist STORY BY LAUREN LEE PHOTOS BY RAW IMAGES AND CONTRIBUTED Hartselle Living 17

W

Whether it’s teaching a teenager how to apply makeup for the first time or helping a bride get ready for her big day, Olivia Sparks strives to make every client who leaves her chair feel beautiful. Taking a more natural approach to her makeup, Sparks said she draws out the beauty of each client to make them look their best – a talent she has honed over many years working to become a makeup artist. The daughter of a cosmetologist, Sparks said she knew from an early age that she wanted to be part of the beauty business. “I knew I wanted to go into the business of making others feel good, and that’s what my mom was so good at. Growing up seeing people leave her chair feeling good and all the friendships that she fostered really made me want that same career,” Sparks said. With six years under her belt as a professional makeup artist, Sparks recently opened her own studio in downtown Hartselle. Despite the pandemic and the struggle most small businesses face, Sparks said she knew it was time to take the leap. “I really took a risk in the middle of the pandemic and applied for a business license in Hartselle and got a studio space with Raw Images. So now instead of traveling to Georgia or to Birmingham or Montgomery or wherever, a lot of my clients are local,” she explained. “I will travel for their

18 Hartselle Living

wedding, but they would have to come to my house just for me to practice on them before their wedding day. Now they can come to a studio space with great lighting, and they get the whole experience and are not having to come to someone’s house.” Sparks said the great lighting, professional vanity space and nice mirrors have leveled up her service to clients. “I feel like this year was a really big leap for me, from going to a hobbyist to what I would consider a true professional, having my own space and honing my craft,” Sparks said. Sparks has also begun giving lessons in the new space, and she said she loves being able to empower others. “It’s teaching teenagers how to apply eye products for the first time so they don’t have to go through that awkward phase like I did when you put a black eyeliner around your entire eye, teaching them how to make their eye look natural and enhanced instead of like a character,” she said. “I love watching their faces go from ‘I don’t know what I am doing’ to ‘Wow.’ It is just really rewarding to see first time teens use make up and getting to teach them.”

Sparks said another rewarding aspect of her career is getting to be part of a bride’s special day. She said she loves getting to know each client and bring their definition of beautiful to life. “It’s a huge moment in their life, and knowing that they trust me for the biggest picture day of their life is special,” she said. “They will have those pictures for 50-60 years, and they will pass that down to their kids. Working with brides and knowing that they trust me and getting to ease that stress on their wedding day is special.” Sparks said she also enjoys working with the bride’s family for the wedding. She said she often has the chance to do the makeup for the grandmother of the bride, which brings with it the opportunity to help her relive her own big day. “I hear all the time from grandparents that ‘The last time I had my makeup professionally done was my wedding day,’ whether that was the 1940s or the 1950s. I think it’s so special that they trust me, and it’s full circle when they are watching their granddaughter get married, and you are doing their makeup for the first time in years, and they are looking in the mirror seeing what they consider beautiful for the first time in 50 years.” Over the years, Sparks said she has picked up tips and tricks of the trade from all of her life experiences. As a child, she was involved in acting in commercials, and she said she learned from her makeup artists there. In high school she learned more as she shadowed a fellow classmate in the pageantry circuit and learned about pageant makeup. While in college, she learned from Disney makeup artists who helped prepare characters for a day in the park and learned about the importance of skin care during her internship and later employment at health spas. “I feel like that’s what sets me apart from other artists, that I have a background in skin,” Sparks said. “I don’t do very intricate showy makeup, but I can do really, really pretty skin and an eye that enhances your natural eye color, and I feel like that is my signature look. I like to focus on a look that is going to enhance someone’s natural beauty instead of trying to cover it all up.” In her six years in the industry, Sparks said she has seen more and more unrealistic beauty standards in magazines and on social media. She said she tries to teach her younger clients, especially, how to see and enhance their natural beauty. “I have seen YouTube makeup and celebrity makeup really soar. The industry went from being a $1 million industry to a $6 million industry,” she said. “That’s why I got into it – because it was so popular. About six years ago, when Kylie Jenner started getting big, was when people started getting into cosmetics. People started caring about their skin and wanting procedures like filler and Botox and things like that. They were caring a lot about vanity. “A lot of the younger girls – because of all these magazines and YouTube and Instagram – they sit down, and I will hear them say things like ‘Sorry I don’t have great skin’ or ‘My eyes are so small.’ They automatically think I see them as ‘less than’ or ugly. I feel like the celebrity status has really helped and hurt the community. “My job is to find a happy medium between what the mom sees, which is the daughter’s beauty, and what the daughter wants,” Sparks said, “to still help the person see their natural beauty even though they don’t see it in themselves.”

FOR BETTER OR FOR WORSE Laura Beth and Jared Kirkpatrick’s wedding plans overcome COVID-19 roadblocks STORY BY REBEKAH YANCEY PHOTOS BY JODI HYDE 26 Hartselle Living

W

When Laura Beth and Jared Kirkpatrick married last summer, their wedding plans had been foiled more than once because of the COVID-19 pandemic and the uncertainties many faced in 2020. Originally planned for June 7 at The Witt House in Priceville, the Kirkpatrick wedding ended up happening in two phases: one very private vow ceremony at a friend’s farm in Hartselle and then at Trinity Baptist Church, where the couple met in 2015. “In May, actually one month to the day before our June 7 wedding, Jared and I sat down and decided to cancel the venue and plan something we knew for a fact could happen like we planned,” Laura Beth said. “I’m a go-with-the-flow type of person, but this was my wedding day – the day I had been thinking about my whole life.” After they canceled their dream venue, Laura Beth said she cried some initial tears, but soon after, she felt at peace and in control for the first time in weeks. “Honestly, I think it was just the peace of God that allowed me to cancel,” she said. “We wanted to know for sure that the people we wanted to invite would be able to come and the cake we wanted to order would be for the right number of people and not 200. I felt a lot of peace.” That peace lasted about a month, Laura Beth said, and then the next roadblock hit. Hartselle Living 27

“I had come to terms that I wasn’t going to have my dream wedding at The Witt House, but at least everyone we wanted to be there would be able to be there,” she said. “We planned it, it was perfect, I was in love with it – and then the Monday before we were supposed to get married, my dad got sick.” It took nearly a week to get the test results back, but with the booked honeymoon on the horizon, decisions had to be made – and they had to be made quickly. “It was after my mom asked me about who I would want to walk me down the aisle if my dad wasn’t able to that Jared started thinking about a backup plan.” Laura Beth said she was set on her dad walking her down the aisle. “No one else was good enough,” she said. “I just broke down.” “Jared went to my mom while I was on the phone with a bridesmaid and said, ‘I have this idea, and it’s different and the absolute total opposite of what we’ve been saying we wanted to do this whole time, but I think it’s the only solution,’” she said. “His idea was to do the vow ceremony – not wear the suit, not wear the dress, not do anything of the wedding that we had paid for and just do the vow ceremony – so that we could get married and go on our honeymoon, and when my dad was well and when we had a grasp on things, we could have the big wedding.” Laura Beth said a light bulb went off when she heard the plan, and it all made sense. “I knew then that we had to get married that way. There was really no other option,” she said. “My grandmother, who is probably the godliest woman in my life, later told me that since my dad got sick, she had been praying that God would use someone to show us wisdom,” she said. “I love that God used Jared in that moment to be that voice of wisdom when we needed it most.” Because the weeks leading up to the wedding had been such an emotional rollercoaster, Laura Beth and Jared opted to marry on the evening before their original wedding date, with just the preacher, Laura Beth’s grandfather A.G. Stepp, their photographer and their parents in attendance. “It was such an emotional thing; we didn’t want to wait until the day we had originally planned,” Laura Beth said. As for Laura Beth’s father, who shortly recovered from double pneumonia, he was 28 Hartselle Living

able to walk his daughter down the aisle to marry Jared. “He was able to come. He wore his mask.” “Thinking about the whole thing, I don’t think we were ever supposed to get married June 7 at The Witt House,” Laura Beth said. “God knew all along what was going to happen and that we needed those roadblocks. If we had gotten all the way to June 5 and had the original plan with a cake and a caterer, it would have been a disaster.” Laura Beth said she wouldn’t have it any other way now. “I recommend getting married twice because the second one is so chill – no nerves at all,” she said with a laugh. The two married for the second time a month later at Trinity Baptist Church, and Laura Beth said it was as COVID-free as

they could make it. “We kept the second wedding as untouched by Covid as possible because our first was so driven by it,” she said. Laura Beth said she thinks her dad was hit the hardest with emotion at her first wedding because of the guilt he felt, and now she’s thankful for how everything turned out despite the chaos of it all. “It was never his fault, and it was totally out of his control,” she said. “In the end, it was so much more beautiful than I thought it could be. The whole thing really just made us focus on what was really important to us. I’ve always been one who believed that the marriage is more important than the wedding, but our situation turned our attention to that even more.”

This year one of the new herbs I grew was chamomile. In 2019, Chris and DeAnn Warnick had planned to go into the ice cream business. When a local bakery shut down unexpectedly, they recognized a need in the community and decided to change course. Chris grew up with a mother who decorated cakes for 30 years and taught all of her kids how to decorate, and DeAnn was great at baking, so the two made a decision. Instead of going into the frozen treat business, they decided to take another sweet route. July 3, they officially launched Sweet Sensations. It was a challenge to jump into running a bakery with very little planning, but in no time the business was thriving, and customers appreciated all they were doing. At Sweet Sensations, the Warnicks focus on all of the wonderful treats people would expect to find, from cupcakes and grab-and-go cakes to specialty cakes like wedding and groom cakes. They also offer an assortment of other treats, like Oreo balls, dipped pretzels and “fat

boy” cookies – two chocolate chip cookies with buttercream sandwiched between. Chris’ personal favorite is the carrot cake with cream cheese frosting, and DeAnn loves the cinnamon rolls. Hartselle, however, loves strawberry. Strawberry cakes and strawberry cupcakes are the most popular sweets, and the strawberry pretzel salad has to be made every day. Sweet Sensations has catering options as well, such as cupcakes, lunch trays and finger sandwiches, along with many other offerings. The bakery caters baby showers, business lunches, weddings and more. This past year, when the pandemic hit, events began canceling, orders were dropped and, like for many businesses around the country, things became much more challenging for Sweet Sensations. To try to bring in more business, the Warnicks expanded their menu to include hot fresh soups and sandwiches. Potato soup is by far their most popular, and because of that, they offer it daily along with a second soup option, such as chili, chicken noodle or broccoli cheddar soups. Their homemade soups have been a great hit. Hartselle Living 33

Everything at Sweet Sensations is made fresh. The soups are made every day, and baked goods are made to order and never frozen. There’s one service Chris and DeAnn offer that most people have never heard of a bakery doing. Do you have Grandma’s cake recipe but aren’t confident in your own baking skills? Or maybe you don’t have the equipment or ability to bake the cookies your mom always made? If you have a recipe you would love to have made, Sweet Sensations will bake it as a custom order, just for you. Reach Sweet Sensations at 256502-8484 or stop by the location, 899 Highway 31 S., in Hartselle. While most people would think of chamomile as a flower or as tea, it can be used for many things – to include infused oil. Infused oils are oils that have been infused with herbs and are used for a number of things, like lotions, salves, massage oils, medicinal balms and more.

CHOCOLATE CHIP COOKIE LOVERS’ FAVORITES

N

STORY AND PHOTOS BY CONSTANCE SMITH

No matter your age, we all love a good chocolate chip cookie. Here are two of my favorite recipes – a classic and one with a twist.

JUMBO CRISP CHOCOLATE CHIP COOKIES

There is often a debate about whether “dipping” cookies – the crunchy kind – or soft cookies are best. Personally, I love them both! But if you like crunchy cookies that hold up great to being dipped in milk, these are the cookies for you. They are buttery, crunchy and just plain delicious. These are a family favorite! My son even requested I make him a batch of these when we went to his Army graduation from basic training. INGREDIENTS • 2 cups all-purpose flour • 1 tsp. salt • 1 tsp. baking soda • 1 cup butter, room temperature • 1 1/2 cups sugar

• 1 egg • 1 tsp. vanilla • 2 cups chocolate chips (I prefer bittersweet; use what you like) • 1/2 cup chopped pecans (optional)

INSTRUCTIONS 1. To begin, preheat your oven to 350 degrees. 2. In a bowl, stir together the flour, baking soda and salt. Set aside. 3. In your mixing bowl, cream together the sugar and butter until they are nice and fluffy. 4. Add in the egg and vanilla; again, beat until nice and fluffy. 5. Stir in your dry ingredients until they are combined, being sure to scrape the bowl with a rubber spatula. 6. Stir in the chocolate chips and nuts. 7. Scoop the dough onto your cookie sheet in large, 2-inch balls. A standard muffin scoop works perfectly. Give them plenty of room. I usually bake about 6 at a time on my baking sheet. 8. Bake for 20-22 minutes or until they are nice and golden. 9. Cool the cookies on the sheet for a couple minutes, then remove them to a cooling rack and cool completely. 10. Repeat with the remaining dough. Store in an airtight container. Hartselle Living 37

CHOCOLATE CHIP ESPRESSO COOKIES

T

These cookies are for those who love chocolate chip cookies but maybe want something with a little less guilt. This recipe uses alternative flours, which makes them a great gluten-free option. They are sweetened with coconut sugar and kissed with the flavor of espresso. INGREDIENTS • 3/4 cup tapioca flour • 1/4 cup coconut flour • 1/4 cup baking cocoa • 1 1/2 Tb. instant espresso (not espresso grains) • 1 tsp. baking soda • 1/4 tsp. fine sea salt • 1 stick (1/2 cup) unsalted butter, room temperature • 3/4 cup coconut sugar • 1 egg + 1 egg yolk • 1/2 cup chocolate chips (such as Lily’s) INSTRUCTIONS 1. To begin, preheat your oven to 375 degrees. 2. Line a baking sheet with parchment paper and set it aside for now. 3. In a bowl, combine the flours, cocoa, instant espresso powder, baking soda and salt. Whisk together and set aside for a moment. 4. In your mixing bowl, beat the butter and coconut sugar together until they are fluffy. 5. Add in the egg and egg yolk. Beat until smooth and creamy. 6. Add in the dry ingredients and mix until combined. Scrape the bowl with a rubber spatula to make sure all of the ingredients are combined. 7. Stir in the chocolate chips. 8. Scoop the cookie dough by rounded teaspoons onto your prepared baking sheet. I use a scoop so the cookies are all the same size, but you can use a spoon if you prefer. 9. Bake the cookies for 8-9 minutes. 10. Cool the cookies on the baking sheet for a few minutes before transferring to a cooling rack to cool completely. Hartselle Living 39

FINDING SOLACE IN THE GARDEN

T

STORY AND PHOTOS BY CONSTANCE SMITH

This past year was one for the record books – a year of firsts. From school and business shutdowns to scarcity in the grocery stores, we have seen things we never imagined we would experience. While hardships were suffered, as we all know, blessings came out the year, too. People learned how to cook dinners and enjoy those meals together – some for the first time. They baked cookies or birthday cakes and made meatloaf and homemade bread. People rediscovered the sense of stability and security of having a stocked pantry to provide for their family and neighbors. I know I personally expanded my own pantry storage. I canned more foods than I have ever canned before and helped many others begin canning and preserving foods for the first time. This past year, I had more people ask me about starting their own backyard flock of chickens than I have in all my years of keeping chickens. There’s something to be said about having a little flock of hens who can take your kitchen scraps and give you healthy eggs as a “thank you.” Beyond the cooking, canning and chickens, there was something else I noticed: gardens. As I drove around the

40 Hartselle Living

area, both in town and out in the country, I noticed brand new gardens popping up everywhere. Countless people decided to start a garden – another first for many folks. When I began gardening many years ago, I started with flower boxes on the balcony of an apartment in Germany. I grew cherry tomatoes, potatoes and peppers. It was tiny, but it was mine. I loved it and knew that someday I would grow a “real” garden. I always enjoyed the idea of growing my own food and having that sense of accomplishment, but what I didn’t expect to cultivate was a sense of peace and connectedness. As I spend untold hours pruning tomato plants or plucking off squash bugs, I find the garden feeds my mind and soul as much as it will eventually feed the body. I spend hours listening to the sounds of nature, soaking up the sunshine and fresh air, and I spend a great deal of time in prayer. I can’t think of more nurturing way to spend that time. I will say, this past year, I grew more flowers than I usually do – more zinnias, cosmos and even deep red sunflowers. I guess when the world is feeling dark, planting beauty is only a natural response.

than we could imagine. January and February are the months when I plan and even start the next garden. The first seeds are planted, and my hopes and dreams for the garden grow wild and big. I know the work will be hard, and the sweat will be plentiful – but the rewards I harvest will be worth it. I don’t know what this coming year will bring, but no matter the challenges, I will find solace in the garden.

Spending time in the garden brings a sense of tranquility. I know many people discovered that for themselves this past year. I received many emails from subscribers who shared with me their excitement of having their first gardens. Some shared photos. I think one of the most beautiful ones I saw was of a little wagon filled with pots of tomato and pepper plants. It was a modest little garden, planted in a city in California. No matter how big or small, the garden blesses us with more

Tony

The Proposal: Tony knew I would be suspicious of anything different from our typical routine, so on an ordinary Thursday in January, we met on our lunch break to take our golden retriever, Chance, for a walk around the lake. As we reached the gazebo over the lake, Tony had treats in his pocket and had Chance lay down. Then, he dropped to one knee and asked me to be his wife. I was so shocked and couldn’t believe he pulled it off without me figuring it out. Favorite Moment from the Big Day: If the old saying about rain on your wedding day brings good luck is true, then Tony and I will have enough to pass down

to our great-grandkids. Our wedding fell on the historic week when there were two hurricanes making landfall at the same time. On top of that, while we were taking pictures before the ceremony, a tornado was headed straight for the venue. Our wedding party had to take cover in the hallway, but thankfully it passed by us. We had bought 15 clear umbrellas the day before, just in case we needed them, but at that point, I wasn’t worried about the rain. All I could think about was marrying Tony. My dad walked me through the rain and down the aisle to my future husband. As soon as we started reciting our vows we wrote for each

other, the rain settled, and the sun came out for the first time that day. I could feel it shining right on us. Then, as we were pronounced husband and wife and walked out, the most beautiful rainbow formed directly above us. We immediately knew it was a sign from Tony’s mom, who was watching over us from Heaven. What You Are Doing Now: We are soaking up every bit of married life we can! Both of our jobs have been remote lately, which has been a blessing to us. The unfortunate part is we will be spending much of our first year of marriage thousands of miles and many time zones apart. Tony is deploying

overseas soon and will return later in 2021. So, we have been taking every chance to create new memories while we have the time. We are also adding a second golden retriever

to our family soon to keep me company while he is gone. We hope this next year flies by, and we are looking forward to creating lots of new memories once he is back!

Cady Blane October 24, 2020

PHOTOS BY LAUREN COFFEY PHOTOGRAPHY 46 Hartselle Living

How You Met: Blane and I met through mutual friends at No Fences Cowboy Church in Falkville. In 2015 the church had a Foot Rodeo, where Blane actually had to pull me off of a roping steer. The Proposal: Fast forward to June 6, 2020. Blane gathered many of our friends on a group trail ride to a waterfall to swim. There, he surprised me and asked me to marry him, which was the easiest yes ever. We did not want a long engagement, so we set the date for Oct. 24, 2020, and began planning.

Favorite Moment from the Big Day: Our wedding day was perfect, but my favorite part had to be during our first look pictures. Blane had a Kendra Scott necklace engraved with my initials he surprised me with. Our day was filled with thoughtfulness and love. We were so happy and so thankful for our family and friends who made our special day perfect. All of our family and friends were a huge help. Kim Humphries, Shari Cain and Molly Nance did an amazing job decorating, and we loved all the details. Lauren Coffey took the best wedding and engagement pictures.

How You Met: We were 15 years old. My best friend told me that she had a single cousin, but I was not thrilled at the thought of being set up with a guy I didn’t know. Then I saw his picture, and he was cute, so I told her she could give him my number, and we could see where this thing could go. I met him in person at their church a few weeks later. The next time I saw him at church, March 7, 2012, he asked me to be his girlfriend. The Wedding Dress: The dream dress of all dream dresses. It was the first dress I tried on, and I knew it was the one! It was A-Line, ivory, big, sparkly. I wanted a big “Callie” dress, as my friends would call it,

and that is exactly what I got. Surrounded by some of my favorite people, I got to pick out the perfect dress! Favorite Moment from the Big Day: I think it is a tie between the first look and walking down the aisle. I wore a different dress to our first wedding, so Cody wasn’t allowed to see my “big” dress until the first look. His expression was everything I wanted it to be, and the dress was as big as he thought it would be. Walking down the aisle was special because we rehearsed that everyone (including me) would walk to “This I Promise You” by *NSYNC, which is what I walked to during our first wedding. He didn’t know that I told the DJ I would

actually be walking to Shania Twain’s “From This Moment On.” Cody knew how special it was to me to have *NSYNC as the song I walked down the aisle to because of how much I love Justin Timberlake. I wanted to surprise him with his favorite artist, Shania! It was perfect. Favorite Wedding Details: Our wedding invitations were actually the photos from our first wedding, which I absolutely loved. How many people get to use their wedding photos as their wedding invitations?! Our songs were a perfect mix of Callie and Cody, because Cody’s favorite singer is Shania Twain, and mine is Justin Timberlake, and every major song we used

was from one of those two singers! I think it gave the perfect touch to the most perfect day. What You Are Doing Now: We are currently remodeling our home. We are

going total Chip and Joanna on this house! We are also loving on our two dogs, Muddy and Ellie Lou and enjoying our time finally being married, even if our wedding did happen in the middle of a pandemic.

Erin Forrest October 24, 2020 PHOTOS BY KAYLIN QUINLIVAN 50 Hartselle Living

How You Met: We first met in 2009 at Hartselle High School, where we sat across from each other in art class, and that was the beginning of our friendship. Over the next several years, our friendship grew and turned into a relationship when we were students at Auburn University. The Proposal: In 2018 Forrest proposed in the garden we had spent the year creating. We were surrounded by all the plants and flowers we had poured our love into, and it was perfect. The Wedding Dress: The dress came from Hartselle’s Something Blue

Shoppe and was designed by Randy Fenoli. Favorite Moment from the Big Day: Instead of your typical first dance, we played a slide show created by Kaylon King Jamieson that showcased our lives. Frank Sinatra’s “I’ve Got a Crush” led the way, starting with baby photos, followed by our friendships, families and highlights of some of our favorite adventures together as a couple. It was so special to share with all of our guests. Erin’s brother Keaton Elledge escorted her down the aisle, and instead of

bridesmaids, her best friends spotlighted as flower friends, each one helping to cover the path with beautiful rose petals before she walked down the aisle. What You Are Doing Now: When we moved back to Hartselle, we started a small flower farm, “Sunwise Flowers,” on the Burleson family’s land. Together we grow specialty flowers and vegetables and bake fresh sourdough bread for the Hartselle Farmers Market that we volunteer our time to manage. Our desire is to bring life to our downtown Farmers Market

and help connect our close-knit community to its local growers, bakers and crafters. Hartselle is our hometown,

where we have planted our roots, and we look forward to watching it grow.

Carley Will October 10, 2020 PHOTOS BY CREATIVE DUST STUDIOS 52 Hartselle Living

How You Met: Will and I are both graduates of Hartselle High School. I was a freshman when Will was a senior. We ended up just being friends because I knew my parents wouldn’t allow me to date a senior. Our paths reconnected when I was a sophomore and Will was already off in the military. He messaged me on Instagram saying that he was in town and was just checking in on how I was. That started our long distance relationship. We were talking for four months before

he came back home and started dating in April 2017. The Proposal: I knew I wanted to get married at The Witt House one day, so he chose that spot for the proposal. It was on New Year’s Day, and all he told me was to be ready by a certain time. He ended up blindfolding me and taking me there (I honestly thought I was getting a puppy, but I wasn’t disappointed!). When I took the blindfold off, we were surrounded by candles and rose petals.

He then got down on one knee and popped the question. Once I said yes, I heard cheering, and behind in the distance was all of our family. What You Are Doing Now: Will is in the Army, so we currently live in Fayetteville, N.C., right outside of Fort Bragg military base. I am attending FTCC seeking an advertising/graphic design degree. We have a new addition to our family, our sweet rescue dog named Conway.

Christina Lucas August 29, 2020 PHOTOS BY RAW IMAGES

54 Hartselle Living

How You Met: Lucas and I met at work. Lucas had already been working at Dynetics for a year when I started working there. We met on my first day when I moved into the empty desk in Lucas’ office. I was very unsure of Lucas for the first month. I even told my friends I didn’t think I liked him. I knew he was interested in me, but I didn’t want to have feelings for a coworker. Within a month, I had broken him of his shyness with me, and we began to form a friendship, as we had deep conversations every morning before our other officemate got to work. A few weeks later, our friends bailed on a group trip to Six Flags, and Lucas asked me if I would still want to go with him “as a date.” I knew he was the one after that date. The Proposal: Lucas had it all

planned out. He was going to propose to me in Big Spring Park on a Saturday night in January. He told me we were going to a Havoc game with my sister and brotherin-law. Severe weather started moving through Huntsville Saturday afternoon, and he realized that it was going to be pouring rain when he wanted to propose. My sister then pretended my nephew wasn’t feeling well, so she cancelled our double date. Lucas still wanted to propose there, so they pretended we would be charged a fee for cancelling our dinner reservations. If we just postponed it to the next day, they claimed, we wouldn’t have to pay the fee, so they made reservations for lunch Sunday. By this point, I had figured out what was going on and just

agreed to whatever they said! The next day, while we were “waiting” for our table to be ready, we went to walk around Big Spring Park. When we got to the bottom of the stairs, Lucas gave me a card with a poem written inside. That’s Lucas’ thing: Every birthday, Valentine’s Day, Christmas, etc., he writes me a poem. When I finished reading, I looked up to see him down on one knee. Favorite Moment from the Big Day: We did a first look, and when Lucas turned around and saw me, he teared up. Lucas is not a super emotional guy, so this was such a surprise to me! We both ended up crying. The look on his face when he saw me is something I’ll cherish forever and never forget.

My second favorite moment was the intimate family dinner we had in place of a reception. COVID-19 ruined a lot of things about our wedding, but that is one of the things I am thankful it brought us that we wouldn’t have gotten otherwise. Favorite Wedding Details: I loved my flowers! Party Petals by Deana did

an amazing job. I still have dreams about that arch over my parents’ front doors. What You Are Doing Now: We are still working together at Dynetics, but we no longer share an office. We are also still planning a wedding reception for 2021 so we can celebrate our marriage with more friends and family.

How You Met: Our story began May 4, 2019. We met through a mutual friend at a local restaurant in downtown Decatur. We quickly bonded over our engineering careers, passion for travel and love of Harry Potter. After a few dates, we were nearly inseparable. Over the next few months, we fell in love and realized we could not live without one another. The week after celebrating one year together, we got engaged. We look forward to growing our marriage with God and family as the focal point.

The Wedding Dress: I found my wedding dress at David’s Bridal. It was a weird experience. We had to wear masks, and only two guests were allowed to be in my party. My American grandmother and mother came with me, and we were able to FaceTime my mother in Russia, which was very special. Favorite Moment from the Big Day: We chose not to see each other the week before the wedding. I guess for both of us, our favorite moment was when we finally saw each other when I was walking down the aisle.

March 21, 2020 PHOTOS BY JOY HAYNES 58 Hartselle Living

The Proposal: March 19, 2020, Tad proposed outside the rock-climbing gym where we had our first date. This was two days before the wedding. Everything was looking like it would shut down, so we decided March 16 that we were going to get married and spend the upcoming quarantine together. The Wedding Dress: I wore mom’s wedding dress. My mother-in-law worked on it to make it more modern looking. I thought I would never ever wear it, but the joke was on me; it fit like a glove, and it was perfect.

Favorite Moment from the Big Day: After the ceremony, when Tad and I left, and we were alone for the first time. I also enjoyed being at the reception with just my family. It was intimate and sweet. We had a morning ceremony, so we had breakfast foods, and we ate with everyone around us because only family and my two best friends came. It was perfect! Favorite Wedding Details: We walked down the aisle to Ball and Chain by McKenzie Lockhart. I loved that it was small and in the morning. I loved that it

was simple and last minute, and I loved getting to wear my mom’s dress. That week was pretty low stress for me. My sister, mom, mother-in-law and sister-inlaw did everything. I got to just relax and have a fun weekend. It was low stress the day of the ceremony – intimate and fun. I love wildflowers, so the flowers from Sam’s were perfect. I loved having the rest of the day to spend with my new husband, as well. What You Are Doing Now: We live in Huntsville. Tad is an engineer, and I

am finishing my third semester of nursing school. We are excited to go on a honeymoon this coming summer if COVID al-
