FROM THE EDITOR

I

Inspiration is a funny thing. It comes and goes seemingly on a whim – and sometimes it hits you out of nowhere. When I sit down to begin planning each issue

of the magazine, I try to look for positive stories that uplift, encourage and inspire. That’s my hope for the stories in this issue of Hartselle Living. Like Madison Clemmons, who is on our cover, I hope you dare to dream big and chase what fulfills you. Like Cassie Beth Powell, I hope you find what makes you happy in life and spend the precious time you have soaking it in and spreading that happiness with others – whether that is finding an artistic outlet and sharing it with the world or conquering your fears. Inspiration can also come via the star basketball player for the Lady Tigers who recently scored her 2,000th career point. That’s pretty inspiring, if you ask me. I’m often inspired by the amazing people in our community and the stories we get to tell in these pages of Hartselle Living. I’m honored I get to play a role in sharing those stories with you, our readers. If you know of a particularly inspirational story that is begging to be told, please reach out to me. I am always on the lookout for the next one. Thanks for reading,

CAREER IN CREATIVITY Hartselle artist’s passion takes flight through abstract art STORY BY REBEKAH YANCEY PHOTOS BY RACHEL HOWARD

For Cassie Beth Powell, art is whatever makes an individual happy. “It’s a representation of someone’s personality and what they like to see in a room,” she said. “It can define a room and the mood of a room, and I think individual art pieces can reflect the person who either purchases them or makes them, as well.” Powell is the owner of CBPaintings, a business she started when she was a senior at Hartselle High School in February 2017. She said art has been a passion since she was young. “Ever since I was a little girl, I’ve always been interested in art. I think that started with my dad and my grandmother, Jerry Powell and June Ward Wallace. She was very artistic – that was my connection with her,” Powell said. Following in her family’s footsteps, Powell is mostly a self-taught artist. She took art classes when she was an elementary student at a studio in downtown Hartselle, but since then she has studied techniques and cultivated new skills by watching other artists. “I started out very one dimensional, using one color and coloring in the lines, but as I’ve grown as an artist and gotten older, I’ve learned how to shade and mix colors and learned different layering skills,” she said.

Her specialty is abstract canvas art. She began with creating pieces for her friends for their dorm rooms. Powell said CBPaintings was founded with a purpose to provide affordable art for girls who want to change the look of their dorms – and it has only grown from there. “A canvas can really change the whole look of a room. A dorm is such a small room, sometimes people want to change it up every year,” she said. “I’ve had return customers who want a new piece from year to year.” “I love abstract art; I enjoy other types of art, too, but that is where my creativity comes out,” she added. “I do landscapes when I need to refresh my brain a little bit.” Landscape paintings, she explained, “give me a different outlet and different opportunities to learn how to make things more realistic. My dad is really good at that type of art, and my

“Growing up, my mom would take photos of my art and post it online to share with her friends. It was kind of surreal, at that age, when someone reaches out and wants to buy a piece from you,” Powell said. “My mom was kind of my first PR person; she really empowered me to continue following that dream.” As her business has continued to grow, Powell said it feels surreal. “It still is, to this day, kind of strange, but the cool thing now is to see where different paintings have landed. I’ve shipped them to different states – as far as Texas.” Powell said she thinks there’s a stigma when it comes to art, one that says “‘You can’t make a career out of art’” – whether it be painting, photography or pottery – whatever it is,” Powell said. “I think there’s an untapped market out there because of the stigma. I think there are probably a lot of talented people out there who are artists but who keep their art to themselves.” For now CBPaintings, while thriving, is a hobby for Powell. The Samford alum lives in Tuscaloosa, where she works for the Crimson Tide Hospitality Athletic Department and studies sports administration at the University of Alabama. She is active on social media, where she posts her paintings and also takes orders from new customers. CBPaintings can also be found online at www. cbpaintings.com. LEAVING HER MARK Masyn Marchbanks piles up points for the Lady Tigers STORY BY RUSSELL FRYE PHOTOS BY JIM MEADOWS AND MARIANN PARKER

O Masyn Marchbanks first played varsity basketball for Hartselle as a seventh-grader.

Over the years, a long line of star players have come through the Hartselle Lady Tigers basketball program – players like Vicki Orr, who played for Auburn and the U.S. Olympic team, Jeanice Slater, Tanya Armstrong and, most recently, Moriah Taylor, who plays for Georgia State. Add senior Masyn Marchbanks to that list. Marchbanks has been a Lady Tiger since she was in the seventh grade. Since those early days, she has left an impression on the program and the City of Hartselle. “My career at Hartselle has been a wonderful experience, and the support from the community has truly been a blessing,” said Marchbanks. “Many of those who have supported me over the years have become family to me.” She has served as a mentor to the younger players on this season’s team, which ranked among the top five 6A teams in Alabama. Marchbanks said one of her most significant accomplishments has been seeing the growth of her teammates. Two of those teammates are freshmen Gracie Hill and Mary France Itsede. “Masyn has become like a sister to me,” said Hill, who is in her second season playing with Marchbanks. “She is such a hard worker and always pushes me to work harder. I love playing the game with her, and it has been an honor. She has helped me become a better player.”

Masyn Marchbanks was presented a commemorative 2,000 point basketball after she passed the mark in a win over Cullman. Hartselle head coach Gary Orr, Hartselle High School athletic director Pat Smith, and Ronald Grantland present her the ball.

She embodies what it means to be a Hartselle Tiger. She demands excellence from herself and pushes others around her to be great.

Itsede, who is playing with Marchbanks for the first time, voiced similar sentiments. “It’s an honor getting to be on the court with her,” Itsede said. “She’s so considerate and hardworking. She pushes us to be the best version of ourselves. She’s like a big sister to me, and I know she always has my back.” Besides being a mentor to younger players the past couple of years, Marchbanks also made an impression on the teammates who have graduated before her. “Masyn was such an amazing teammate and friend. She was always early to practice and stayed after to put in extra work,” said Lillyanna Cartee, who played with Marchbanks the previous three seasons. “She always gave off tons of positive energy. She could have easily been a selfish player, but she always put the team first. I miss playing with her so much and am so glad to see that she is having an amazing season this year.”

Marchbanks’ varsity coach has been Gary Orr. They have led the Lady Tigers to incredible achievements in the past five years. “I thank Coach Orr for believing in me as a timid little seventh grader and investing his time in me,” Marchbanks said. “Our relationship has grown over the years, and it means a lot to play for a coach who believes in me as he does.” Marchbanks and Orr have teamed up for more than 120 wins over the past six years, with more to come. The team finished in the regional finals in 2019 and 2021, regional semifinals in 2018 and sub-area in 2017 and 2020, when Marchbanks missed the final seven games after suffering a shoulder injury in the Morgan County Tournament. “The past five years, it has been a blessing watching her mature as a player, student and person,” said Orr. “She is willing to listen and learn. She has a strong desire for success and is willing to share the talents she is blessed with. She has a great work ethic to improve her skill level as a player. In addition, she has shown great leadership skills and understanding of the game and situations.” As a Lady Tiger, Marchbanks has been named to the 6A All-State first team as a junior and Honorable Mention as a sophomore. She will likely be named to the first team following this season. She has improved every year in high school, reaching the 1,000-point mark during her sophomore season and topping the 2,000-point mark this season. As a sophomore, she averaged 16.4 points and 3.5 rebounds per game. As a junior, she averaged 19.8 points and 5.8

rebounds. She is averaging 23.2 points per game through 25 games this season. During a three-game stretch early in her senior season, she set new career highs in points in each game. Following graduation, Marchbanks will take her talents and energy to Birmingham, to Samford University. She chose the Lady Bulldogs over more than 20 other schools. She will join former Priceville 2,000-point scorer Kathleen Wheeler on the Samford roster. Marchbanks committed to Samford and head coach Carley Kuhns Jan. 16, 2021, and signed with the Lady Bulldogs Nov. 15, 2021. At the time, Marchbanks said, “It feels like I have crossed one threshold heading into another chapter of my life. I know the plans God has for me, and I feel this moment is planting me in fertile soul for the rest of my life.” She will leave Hartselle after serving as an ambassador for the school and program during her time on campus. “She embodies what it means to be a Hartselle Tiger. She demands excellence from herself and pushes others around her to be great,” said Hartselle principal Dr. Brad Cooper. “She represents Hartselle High School very well. We are proud of her accomplishments on and off the court. I do not doubt she will continue to do great things.” Assistant principal and athletic director Pat Smith agreed. “She exemplifies humbleness and good character by the way she communicates and handles herself with others. Her character and work ethic demonstrate what our expectations are as Hartselle Tigers. I look forward to seeing her represent Hartselle, her family and herself at the collegiate level.”

Masyn Marchbanks talks to head coach Gary Orr during a game.

Another of Marchbanks’ accomplishments has been the creation of a free basketball clinic for girls in the Hartselle community and surrounding areas. Marchbanks said she has had people such as Slater, Orr and former state representative Ronald Grantland pour into her life over the years, and she wants to do the same for future Lady Tigers. “My goal is to return to Hartselle every summer to continue free basketball clinics for girls,” Marchbanks added. She said she considers her time at Hartselle to be a blessing, and she hopes she has been a blessing to others. Hartselle Living 17

When people visit the local Morgan Farmers Co-op on Highway 31, they might occasionally be greeted by a smiling young woman named Madison Clemons. She’s happy to ring up a customer or answer questions, but what she does outside of work might come as a surprise. Like many young girls, Clemons had a love for horses as a child. Her brother got a horse and taught her to ride. Over time, the simple joy of horseback riding grew into something more. She watched rodeos on television and watched competitions on social media, and she decided barrel racing looked like a lot of fun. She thought she might even be able to do it herself. When she was 15 years old, she competed in a local barrel racing event at the Morgan County Sheriff Posse Grounds in Hartselle. That was all it took. Clemons said she knew it was what she loved to do. Since then, she has taken part in many competitions, from regional ones in Limestone County and Cullman to far away events in places like Indiana. Clemons is now 19 and is a graduate of Hartselle High School. Her parents, Jim and Debbie Clemons, support their daughter and her dreams, which include competing in barrel racing at the professional level. She is working hard toward that goal and said she hopes to qualify to compete in the nationals in Guthrie, Oklahoma, this year.

Just like racecar drivers and sports teams, rodeo competitors seek sponsors to help them with the tremendous expense of traveling to and from the competitions, entry fees and other costs. She has already received sponsorships from several local businesses. While she loves racing and competition, Clemons said her general love of horses keeps another goal in her sights. She plans

SPRINGTIME GOODIES STORY AND PHOTOS BY CONSTANCE SMITH

W

When spring rolls around, we all start craving recipes with lighter, brighter flavors. Personally, I always have a hankering for two things: citrus and berries. These two recipes are just that. Lemon scones make the perfect breakfast or even afternoon snack, and this tasty blueberry dessert is sure to satisfy that berry craving.

GLUTEN-FREE BLUEBERRY CRISP

This blueberry crisp recipe uses alternative flours that add a lovely, light texture. Because there is no wheat flour or processed sugar, this recipe is great for those who are on special diets and avoiding sugar or gluten – but this crisp doesn’t skimp at all on flavor! INGREDIENTS For the filling: • 6 cups blueberries, fresh or frozen • 1 1/2 tsp. lemon juice • 1 1/2 tsp. fresh lemon zest • 1/2 tsp. vanilla extract • Pinch of sea salt • 1/3 cup coconut sugar • 2 Tb. arrowroot starch For the topping: • 1 cup fine almond flour • 2 Tb. arrowroot flour • 1/2 cup chopped walnuts • 2 Tb. maple syrup • 2 Tb. coconut oil, melted INSTRUCTIONS 1. To begin, preheat oven to 375 degrees. 2. Grease a square baking pan – I use coconut oil – and set it aside for now. 3. Place the blueberries in a bowl. Sprinkle the lemon juice, lemon zest and vanilla extract over the berries. Stir together. 4. In a small dish, mix the coconut sugar, arrowroot flour and salt. Sprinkle this over the blueberries and stir to coat. 5. Spread the mixture into the prepared baking dish. 6. In another bowl, whisk together the almond flour and arrowroot flour for the topping. Add the chopped walnuts, maple syrup and coconut oil. Stir together to create a crumbly mixture. 7. Sprinkle the mixture over the top of the blueberries. 8. Bake the dessert for 40-45 minutes, until the blueberries start to bubble and the crust begins to get golden. 9. Serve as is or with whipped cream or ice cream. Hartselle Living 25

LEMON CREAM MINI SCONES

These delicate-tasting little scones have a simple glaze that is the perfect finishing touch. You’ll love these! You can also make an orange scone variety by substituting oranges for the lemons in the recipe. INGREDIENTS For the scones: • 2 cups plus 2 Tb. all-purpose flour • 1 Tb. baking powder • 3 Tb. sugar • 1/8 tsp. salt • 6 1/2 Tb. cold butter, divided • 2 lemons • 1 cup half and half • 1 Tb. vanilla For the glaze: • The lemons • 1 cup powdered sugar • 1 Tb. vanilla extract INSTRUCTIONS 1. To begin, preheat oven to 425 degrees. 2. In a mixing bowl, combine the flour, baking powder, sugar and salt. Stir together. 3. Slice up 6 tablespoons of cold butter. Drop it into the flour mixture. With a pastry blender, cut in the butter until there are no butter bits larger than a pea. 4. Zest a lemon with a microplane or fine grater. Add 1 1/2 tablespoons of the zest into the flour mixture and stir. 5. Measure out the cold half and half. Add in the vanilla extract and stir together. 6. Pour it into the bowl and stir until just combined. 7. Turn the dough out onto a floured surface and pat it into a square, about 3/4-inch thick and 8 inches square. With a knife, cut the square into nine squares, like a tic-tac-toe board. Cut each of those squares in half diagonally. Place them on a baking sheet or baking stone. 8. Take the remaining 1/2 tablespoon of butter and cut it into little bits. Place one bit on the top of each scone. 9. Bake the scones for 10-12 minutes, or until they are just starting to get a golden color here and there. 10. Transfer the scones to a cooling rack and prepare the glaze. 11. Psut the sifted powdered sugar in a bowl. Add in a teaspoon of zest. Juice the lemons into a dish through a small sieve. Add the vanilla extract and 2 tablespoons of the lemon juice to the powdered sugar. 12. Whisk smooth, adding more juice as needed until you have the right consistency. Brush it all over the top of all the scones. 26 Hartselle Living

From the Librarians: The William Bradford Huie Library of Hartselle is proud to offer readers recommendations from our librarians. These titles were selected by Sarah Laughmiller, Chrissy Tucker and Alex VanKoughnett. Visit the library to check out these and more.

“REBEL HOMEMAKER” by Drew Barrymore Most everyone knows Drew Barrymore from her feature films and TV shows; however, in her all-new book, Drew is giving the world a peek into her personal life. “Rebel Homemaker” is part biography and part cookbook. It is full of lessons Drew has learned in her life, pictures from different periods and recipes she personally loves to cook for her family. This book gives a good picture of the person behind the camera.

“LIVE YOUR LIFE: MY STORY OF LOVING AND LOSING NICK CORDERO” by Amanda Kloots In this biography, Amanda Kloots tells the story of her husband Nick Cordero. In March 2020, Amanda took Nick to the hospital for what they expected to be pneumonia; however, he had COVID-19. He would spend the next three months in the hospital fighting for his life. He lost his battle and passed away in June 2020. Nick left behind Amanda and their 1-year-old son Elvis. This book is a documentation from beginning to end of the life that Nick and Amanda shared.

“I’LL BE GONE IN THE DARK” by Michelle McNamara This posthumously-published account follows Michelle McNamara on her journey to solve the case of the Golden State Killer. From 1973-1986, the Golden State Killer committed more than 180 crimes, ranging from burglary to rape to murder. In this book, Michelle explains in detail all of the gruesome and terrifying details of his crimes that she gathered from detectives, survivors and experts. Without her constantly investigating, the Golden State Killer might have never been caught.

“DOPAMINE NATION” by Dr. Anna Lembke Dr. Anna Lembke, psychiatrist and author, explains the effects of dopamine on our bodies. When released in the brain, dopamine causes us to feel pain and pleasure – whether this is through food, drugs, social media, the news or other sources. Dr. Lembke explains how you can overindulge in dopamine. She has helped her patients find their right balance, despite the dopamine curveballs life throws at us. She shares anecdotes of patients and how they struggled and then thrived through her advice and instruction.

“A LITTLE CLOSER TO HOME” by Ginger Zee Ginger Zee is America’s bright, bubbly meteorologist, but few know of the internal storms she’s weathered. In this biography, Ginger is more real and raw than ever before. She shares with readers about her rocky childhood, her deep struggles with depression, her suicide attempts and how she’s navigating life now. Ginger is open and honest about her life, and many will find it very relatable. She is committed to expanding the dialogue on mental health. 30 Hartselle Living

IMPACT STUDENT LEADERSHIP PROGRAM

This February, the Hartselle Area Chamber of Commerce launched our first student leadership program, IMPACT, which is open to high school sophomores and juniors in Morgan County. Sponsored by Maegan Jones, broker and Realtor at MarMac Real Estate, this program will grow life-long community leaders in the Hartselle area

through mentorship, experiential and peer learning, community networking, service projects and problemsolving opportunities. Growing leaders is a community responsibility, and when the soil of a community is as rich as the Hartselle area, stewarding the seedlings of future leaders is a great privilege.

FINDING YOUR FUTURE EXPO

Finding Your Future, presented by Sonoco Reels & Plugs, was held Feb. 3 at Hartselle High School. This new event featured more than 30 businesses and industries sharing their career pathways and offerings such as free tuition, free college credit, scholarships, apprenticeships and immediate employment opportunities. A half hour session at 5:30 p.m. was dedicated to eighth-grade students and their parents, and from 6-8 p.m., fifth- through 12th-grade students and their parents were invited to an open house-style expo. A free

pizza dinner was offered to the first 500 families, courtesy of the Hartselle Area Chamber of Commerce. The Chamber’s objective is to educate, attract and keep a vibrant workforce in our community to enable our local industries to prosper. This forum allowed parents the opportunity to learn about the career pathway options available to their students in this modern workforce environment. Other sponsors for Finding Your Future included Cerrowire and Redstone Federal Credit Union.
