Hartselle alumni excel in medical education By Rebekah Yancey rebekah.yancey @hartselleenquirer.com Four Hartselle alumni who participated in the medical academy during high school are continuing their medical education at the UAB Heersink School of Medicine. Additionally, Hannah Dotson,

Nosal and Dotson, members of the class of 2019, are in their first years at Virginia College of Medicine while Stout is in her second year at the Burrell College of Osteopathic Medicine. Stout graduated from Hartselle in 2017. The medical academy is the largest academy by enrollment numbers. Since its beginning in 2011, instructor Lynne Shelton estimates 1,000 students have been through the program since that time. “Mrs. Shelton, Mrs. Goins, Mrs.

Local ministry spreads warmth at Priceville library By Rebekah Yancey rebekah.yancey@ hartselleenquirer.com In the spirit of giving and community care, the Sewing and Serving ministry at Shoal Creek Baptist Church has adorned the Linda Duran Public Library in Priceville with a touch of warmth this holiday season. A Christmas tree, decorated not with traditional ornaments, but with hats, scarves, and gloves, has been placed at the library for anyone in need to take and stay warm during the cold winter months. The initiative, led by the volunteers of the Sewing and Serving ministry, aims to spread holiday cheer and address the needs of those facing the chill of winter.

The tree, standing tall in the library’s foyer, will be regularly replenished as community members take what is needed. Pat Dunkin, a member of the Sewing and Serving ministry, said the goal of the initiative is to share the warmth of the holiday season with the community, both figuratively and literally. “We believe in extending a helping hand, and what better time to do so than during the holidays,” Dunkin said. The clothing and accessories have been donated to the cause or found at the Priceville Community Thrift Store, Dunkin said, which is also operated by the church. All items are available to the public free of charge. The library is located at 1612 S Bethel Rd., Decatur.

Langston, and Mr. Hardin do a phenomenal job of providing our students with many amazing opportunities in the healthcare field,” Principal Brad Cooper said. “They are constantly finding new ways to prepare our students for life after high school by providing hands-on experiences. To simply put it, our teachers are rockstars, and our students follow their guidance.” Cooper Wright, a 2015 graduate of Hartselle High School, is in his fourth year at UAB studying Obstetrics and Gynecology.

Bobby (Bob) Eugene Anders passed away November 22, 2023, at his home in Forsyth, Mo. Bob was born on July 21, 1937, in rural Morgan County Alabama, the third son of John Forrest and Alma

(Murphree) Anders. He worked like crazy to get that nickel and when he got to the end of the row as his daddy handed him the nickel he said, “Now that I know you can do it, you need to stay and keep working.” A student when high schools offered vocational training as part of their curriculum, Bob studied to become a machinist and when he graduated from

hristmas shopping during World War II left much to be desired especially for parents with young children. Toys were scarce. Those on store shelves were made from cardboard, wood and glue because metal, leather and rubber were used exclusively to make products for military personnel. The rationing of sugar limited the availability of candies and baked sweets, and the war effort gobbled up the cars and trucks being made. Most families had no transportation, and those who did were subject to wartime rationing of gasoline and tires. The alternative was the use of public transportation on a first-come, first-serve basis. I remember a cold Christmas Eve when two siblings and I were left in the care of neighbors while our parents went Christmas shopping

T

he holidays always bring a little bit of homesickness. I guess it’s the old memories and the lost loved ones that we know won’t have a present under the tree. I love Christmas as much as any kid does and still believe in the magic of it, but there’s still something a little bit sad about the Christmas lights glowing in a dimly lit, quiet living room late at night. When the kids are sound asleep and my wife is taking the babysitter home, I find myself looking at that tree and missing days gone by. The strange thing is, what helped my homesickness wasn’t looking

O

n December 7, 1941, with the sneak attack on Pearl Harbor by Japan, the United States was catapulted into a worldwide conflict which it had tried to avoid. With the explosion of the first bomb on the American fleet the world was forever changed. There are not many of us left who were alive at the time to personally remember the way we felt and to witness the drastic way in which that event affected our nation and lives. I was five years old and first heard the news of the attack at church on Sunday night. I had never heard of Pearl Harbor and had little understanding of the impact the bombing would have on the life of every American in the following years. But I could sense by the hushed voices of those who relayed the news that something terrible had happened. At age five I could not understand the catastrophic destruction

in Gadsden a few miles away. They let us know they would be looking for gifts to put under our Christmas tree and promised to Clif Knight return home Staff Writer before dark. We were Emeritus allowed to walk with them a quarter of a mile to the bus stop on the highway and, as the big bus pulled away, we stood by waving to them and shouting byes. We were excited and hopeful that their shopping would result in a bunch of gifts under our Christmas tree. We were also content that we

would have a daylong visit with our friends. Little thought was given to their absence while we were having fun playing kids’ games. However, by mid-afternoon our attention turned to the highway for some sign of a bus. There was no sign of our parents when the sun vanished and we could no longer see the narrow path that led through the woods to our house. “They said they’d be home before dark,” my older sister volunteered. We need to go home and wait for them there,” I pointed out, “ before it gets any darker.” “Before it gets any darker,” added my younger sibling. “I just want my mama to come home,” our youngest sibling added. The trail home seemed more like a half-mile. Hand-in-hand, we covered the distance a step at

a time until we came within view of our house. Then, we dropped hands, ran to the front door and scrambled inside. Crawling in the dark, we found our parents’ bed and hid under the covers. It was dark! It was cold! Time passed slowly as we wondered what might have happened to our parents. We were quiet as a mouse when the front door opened and our father called out, “are you kids alright?” “Mother, Daddy,” we answered, and rushed into their arms . “What took you so long?” we asked. “There were so many soldiers waiting to get home to be with their families,” our mother said. “We felt the right thing to do was give them our seats and wait for another bus.”

at pictures of Mama or reflecting on cherished Christmas memories; what comforted me was putting on some Randy Travis and just soaking Jacob Hatcher in the music. Community There was Columnist something about the old familiar melodies that made me feel like I was in another time sur-

rounded by all the things I miss. As I sat in my chair and sad cheating songs echoed down the hall I remembered that after my family and friends, country music has always been my true companion. I recalled a day in Haiti ten years ago when I was feeling lonesome so I pulled up George Strait on my phone and spent a few minutes visiting with one of my oldest friends. It wasn’t home, but it was enough to make me feel like I’d been there briefly. I’ve lived in Georgia, Tennessee, Kentucky, and now Alabama and that makes home hard to find sometimes. As a friend once said,

I’m not from any one place, I’m just from the South. They say you can’t go home again and I guess that’s true, especially when you’ve called as many places home as I have. I can go back to the house I grew up in but the things I miss about home aren’t there anymore. Mostly the version of me that learned guitar on that front porch and sat with a beagle named Barney Junior on the back patio. But I can listen to some Don Williams, and that’s a mighty fine second place to going home.

Hartselle Enquirer and death that would occur as the flames of World War II burned unabated around the globe for four more years. Its effect was A. Ray Lee felt in our Columnist church and community as young men enlisted or were drafted for military duty. In every worship service, the congregation prayed for their safety as they completed basic training and were shipped to fields of combat. As time passed many of them received a brief furlough but would not see their homes and families again until victory was won; a victory which for months seemed in question. I only began to understand the

nature and extent of the war when I entered the first grade in the fall of 1942. It is where I first heard the mantra “Let’s remember Pearl Harbor and go on to victory.” I also learned the pledge of allegiance to the American flag. Each morning boys vied with each other to be the one who held the flag or to lead the salute to it as we began class. I learned the personal effect the war had on families. Falkville School was located one block off old Highway 31. One day while we were at recess a long convoy of military vehicles passed. When they had moved out of sight a classmate was crying inconsolably. Her family was grieving the loss of a loved one who had died in battle. In the following months, I learned the names of faraway and exotic places where our men were fighting. My father had been exempted from military duty because of his age, family, and occupation as a farmer. But in his extended family, and that of my mother, were

numerous relatives who served diligently. My father’s brother, Clarence, drove supplies over the dangerous Burma Road. My mother’s brother Jim, who had enlisted a few months before the war began, was a gunner on a B-24 bomber. He was on duty in the Aleutian Islands when Dutch Harbor was attacked as a diversion to the battle of Midway. Before the war was over other kin were deployed over Europe, Asia, and the South Pacific. To my knowledge, they all survived physically, but each came home with emotional scars. With the development of the atom bomb and its use to end the war the world plunged into the atomic era which soon became a nuclear one. Mankind has lived in fear of annihilation of all living things for almost a century. Indeed, we should remember Pearl Harbor and its eventual results. It has shaped our nation and our lives more than later generations understand.

Thank you for Veterans Day coverage Thank you for your coverage of the Veteran’s Day event at HJHS; it was one of the most

moving & meaningful I have attended; I had the privilege to meet & share stories with many other men & women I otherwise would not have met. They shared what they considered anecdotes; yet, I heard them as stories of commitment, honor & valor. The leadership and per-

sonal example of the teachers & staff were evidenced by the entire student body. The ROTC Color Guard, the letters & poems shared by individual students, the performances by the choir & the band as well as the respectful behavior of the scores of young people who sat on that

hard gym floor were inspiring and provide hope for this next generation of American patriots. Thank you, teachers & staff. Sincerely, DuWain Brundage U.S. Navy 1968-72

Special to the Enquirer In celebration of national ‘Be the Impact’ held Nov. 2, students at Barkley Bridge Elementary School engaged in thoughtful reflection, contemplating the individuals who have left an indelible mark on their lives. The occasion took place during book fair week further enhanced by themed dress-up days that welcomed grandparents and special guests for the Kids Invite Someone Special (KISS) events. The chosen dress-up day proved to be a highlight, according to BBE librarian Jamie Dutton. The halls of BBE were abuzz with excited conversations as students proudly showcased their creative outfits and shared the stories behind their choices. Among the imaginative outfits, a diverse array of celebrities emerged, famous both locally and worldwide. In a surprising twist, teach-

By Mary Sell Alabama Daily News Sen. Arthur Orr, R-Decatur, is proposing safety audits by law enforcement at every public school in the state to identify and fix potential security weaknesses. “I like the idea of a consistent audit group looking at all schools,” said Orr, chairman of the Senate education budget committee. He’s working on a draft bill for the 2024 legislative session. He said he favors having designated law enforcement officers conduct the regular evaluations. What agency would be used is still to be determined, but the goal is to have inspections every three to five years to ensure “rudimentary safety precautions” at all schools, Orr said. Those precautions include exterior doors that can be kept locked to intruders but allow people to exit the building if needed and intercom systems. “Then, we can try to set

ers themselves took part in the festivities. Christy Zuck embodied the grace of Kate Middleton, while Macie Harbin transformed into Alabama Crimson Tide head coach Nick Saban. Preston Hodges paid tribute to family legacy by stepping into the shoes of his grandfather, Judge Glenn Thompson. The enthusiasm and widespread participation exceeded all expectations, Dutton added, especially considering the recent Halloween festivities. Each student embraced the opportunity to express themselves, turning what might have been a typical school day into a memorable celebration of individuality and shared stories. National ‘Be the Impact’ Day at BBE proved not only to be a time of reflection but also a day filled with joy, connection and a celebration of the diverse influences that shape the lives of the students and educators alike.

up a fund in the (Education Trust Fund) to address the reports, the deficiencies as found by this trained group of officers,” Orr said. Orr said he wants to get the audits funded in the 2025 education budget and then have a pool of maybe $5 or $10 million for improvements in the 2026 budget. “We start with the basics and work our way up,” Orr said. He thinks a small team of officers would be sufficient to perform the audits every two to three years. “Some schools won’t have any problems,” Orr said. Earlier this year, the Texas Legislature passed a law requiring annual safety audits at public schools by designated state education staff members. The audits include recommendations and required corrective actions to address security deficiencies. Last year, school officials told Alabama Daily News that schools’ physical security measures had improved in the last 10 years, but gaps

remain. Educators have also asked for dedicated state funding related to security measures. Schools are allowed to use their semi-regular Advancement and Technology (A&T) appropriations for security, but competing needs include capital projects, transportation costs and deferred maintenance. The one-time allocations vary by school size but in recent years have been millions of dollars for the largest systems. There was no A&T allocation in 2023 as lawmakers don’t have

to allocate the funds every year. The recently reconvened School Safety Advisory Commission, a panel of lawmakers and law enforcement, mental health and education officials, met late last month. Committee chair Terri Collins, R-Decatur, said the group is focusing on two aspects of school safety: students’ mental health and building security features. Dwight Satterfield, deputy superintendent of Decatur City Schools, is a member of the commission. Collins said she welcomes Orr’s proposal. “This is very much in line with the discussions we’re having at the school safety task force,” Collins said. “The Legislature has allowed schools to use A&T money for capital improvements related to safety, but hasn’t required it. And many schools use that money for what they consider more pressing needs.” She said the commission has considered a requirement that a certain percent-

age of A&T money be dedicated to building security. “Making sure we have some minimum standards (is a goal of the commission),” she said. Satterfield, who oversees DCS safety, also serves on the governor’s school safety task force and the attorney general’s safe school team. He said one complication in school security audits is that variations in school design make necessary different security measures. “The problem will be that it would be hard to standardize based upon the multiple and various level of security and building design in place with the 140 systems in Alabama,” Satterfield said. He also noted that unfunded mandates on school security won’t work, especially in poorer school districts. “We are fortunate in Decatur that our board has funded over $1 million in physical security features in the last year and a half but many systems are not

that lucky,” Satterfield said. “There are states that are way ahead of Alabama as it relates to school safety,” he said, noting that some states provide funding for films applied to windows and doors for added strength and also for school resource officers. Separately, several Alabama lawmakers are strongly pushing for the creation of education savings accounts, which would potentially see hundreds of millions of education dollars being sent directly to parents for use on private or home schooling. State Superintendent Eric Mackey last week said that in the event of the creation of ESAs, he would like to see accountability measures established to ensure private schools were just as safe as public schools. “If we’re going to flow public money into a facility, we want to make sure it’s a safe facility,” Mackey said. The 2024 legislative session begins Feb. 7.

“We own the building, the sheriff just runs it so it’s our place to keep the building up,” he said. The commission approved paying Security Tint Solutions $40,570 for one-way mirror tint on the observation windows. “This is to replace/repair the observation windows. These are tinted but have become quite worn and need to be replaced,” Swafford said. “It is a security feature that allows for the continuous observation of the housing units.” The commission approved window screens for 180 jail cell windows. Swafford said these screens will be new additions to the existing windows. “These will cover the interior of the windows in the

housing areas,” he said. “These are to prevent access to the windows themselves.” The commission approved installing carpet for administrative offices in the jail and interior painting. “This is the interior common areas of the jail including main hallways, booking, classrooms,” Swafford said. “They have not been painted since the jail was built and are due for a touch-up.” The commission approved paying LifeTime Epoxy Floors $96,250 to repair drainage in the jail and coat the floors in 22 showers with a non-slip material. “We’re trying to make it safer, like the floor slip, we have a lot of problems with the showers,” Long said. “At the end of the day it’ll

save us money on medical bills for slips and falls.” Long said they are currently just coating the shower floors. “We’re eventually going to finish the whole jail; last year we did half of it,” Long said. The commission approved the purchase of four replacement clothes washing machines and five replacement clothes dryers. Long said many of the current machines are wearing out. “We’re running 600, 650 inmates right now so they have to wash their stuff about every day,” he said. “They only last a few years because they get used all the time. … You don’t always have just clothes to wash, you’ve got the sheets.”

’ By Erica Smith For the Enquirer The Morgan County Sheriff ’s Office will complete installation of an inmate tracking system, begin an upgrade of its body camera system and make numerous jail improvements after the County Commission approved the expenditures this week. The commission approved paying $12,500 to cSpire Business, the final step necessary before it can install a new prisoner tracking system. Alan Host, Morgan County Sheriff ’s Office chief deputy, said the tracking system will allow jail staff to monitor inmate movement. “Each inmate is going to

have a bracelet with kind of like a barcode scanner on it with their number and their identification. So, when we scan them for whatever we do, it will be logged,” he said. “Anytime we move an inmate for court purposes, if they have to move to a different cell, they’re being transported any place, we can scan them, and it will go into the system.“ Swafford said they hope to have the system ready to go soon. “These are the final components to complete the installation,” Swafford said. “We hope to have the system operational in February.” The commission also approved a five-year contract with Motorola Solutions for $404,789 at its

Tuesday meeting. Sheriff ’s spokesman Mike Swafford said the contract will primarily help with storage of the body camera footage. “Our body camera provider was purchased; during that process we learned our existing cameras would no longer be maintained,” he said. “This will update/ replace our non-jail cameras, approximately 50 cameras with updated software and implementation. The main benefit will be cloud storage that will release strain on our internal storage capacity.” Morgan County Commission Chairman Ray Long said improvements to the jail approved at Tuesday’s meeting will be mostly paid for out of the county’s general fund.

“Anxious People” By Fredrik Backman The bank robber didn’t know anything about crime – as evidenced by the fact that he chose a cashless bank to rob. Upon learning the mistake, the would-be bank robber fled to the nearest stairwell that led to an apartment being shown by a real estate agent. Everyone inside is now being held hostage, and no one is too terribly upset by it. They have their own problems in life. He will graduate this May. Wright said his participation in the medical academy gave him a ‘leg up’ on his medical training before college as he was certified as an EKG technician during high school. “I don’t have an extravagant story about deciding to go into healthcare,” he said. “It was a decision I made for myself even prior to the medical academy and it turned out to be the most important decision I ever made.” A 2018 graduate of Hartselle, Josh Cunnins is in his second year at Heersink

where he is specializing in interventional radiology. He said his years in the medical academy, along with his personal experience as a patient, reaffirmed his interest in medicine. “I chose a career in healthcare because of my own experiences as a patient,” Cunnins said. “In 2014, I was diagnosed with spondylolisthesis which is a fancy way of saying a specific spine fracture – and I worked with doctors and physical therapists through that process and even got back to playing soccer for HHS.” In 2019, Cunnins was diagnosed with a rare brain tumor that required surgery to remove.

“That experience helped me to see that the true role of doctors is not just about making people feel better or give medicines, but about comforting patients and being the shepherd to people who are surrounded by chaos and don’t know what’s going on,” he added. Mel Ebeling said the HHS Medical Academy was the foundation of every opportunity she has had since high school, including an internship and UAB’s early medical acceptance program. “It also provided me with the opportunity to become an Emergency Medical Technician at no cost, which has allowed me to serve my community in the fire service and receive invaluable training across the country from the Dept. of Homeland Security,” she said. “At the end of the day, the one thing that everyone in this world has in common— regardless of our differences in religion, culture, ethnicity and beliefs—is the reality of infirmity and death. From prescribing medications to prevent and cure diseases to performing emergency

procedures that save lives, physicians are at the center of that commonality. I chose to become a physician because I want to impact the lives of others in such a way that they can have the health and opportunity to pursue happiness and fulfillment during this short period of time we call “life.” Anna Wilson is currently studying neurology, but the first-year medical student said she is keeping an open mind for her focus will be in the future. Wilson said the shadowing opportunities both in the medical academy and in college pointed her toward a career in healthcare. “Getting to see what doctors actually do on a daily basis and envisioning myself being happy doing their job is what led me down the pre-med track,” Wilson said. “I was officially sold on choosing a career in healthcare after having the opportunity to volunteer for pediatric and hospice patients during college. I knew that serving and caring for others in this specific capacity is what I wanted to do for the rest of my life.

Gabby Stout said her time in the medical academy was invaluable and it provided her with an honest and detailed look into the career she is now pursuing. She plans on applying for residency in Obstetrics and Gynecology. Greyson Taylor will begin his studies at Heersink this fall, graduated from Hartselle and started his college career at the University of Alabama during the height of the COVID-19 pandemic. “That experience helped solidify my commitment to becoming a doctor,” Taylor said. “I am in a pre-medical program at the University of Alabama that requires its members to stay on the same floor of a dorm together. Being quarantined with 30ish other premed students essentially forced me to make the decision to either get on their level with studying, volunteering and research or find a new major.” Shelton said having this many former students simultaneously in medical school is an accomplishment for Hartselle High

School and for the medical academy. “I feel like this is pretty amazing considering how small our school is compared to the number of students actually admitted to medical school,” she said. Only about 41% of applicants to medical schools in the U.S. who sought admission for the 2019-20 school year matriculated, according to statistics released by the Association of American Medical Colleges. Shelton said her hope is that some of her former students will one day return to Hartselle to practice medicine. The healthcare landscape in Hartselle is expanding as Cullman Regional brought Hartselle Health Park to the city in 2021 and plans for a freestanding emergency department and ambulatory surgical center were recently approved by the State Health Planning & Development Review Board. The freestanding ER should be complete in 2024. The surgery center is expected to open in 2026.

What they learn from (ages) zero to 5 can and will affect their lives for the rest of their lives.” Tanya McCain, Morgan County Schools director of pre-K education, said literacy is important. “Data shows us that students with books in their homes are more likely to be proficient in school,” she said. “Reading proficiency starts with books, and books are at the heart of early language acquisition. And that language acquisition is key in determining kindergarten readiness and long-term success.” McCain said she believes all parents have one thing in common. “Every parent wants something better for their child. This partnership allows us to assist in providing just that,” she said. “As we partner with the Dolly Parton Imagination Library, we provide books

for our children in Morgan County aged birth to 5 as we propel them on their pathway to success, one page at a time.” Ross said it costs $26 to provide one child with books for one year. She said local organizations and companies will help pay for the books. Ross said the state also will assist with funds. “It’s not free on our end,” she said. “Dolly’s foundation pays for the administration in Sevierville, Tennessee. … Through the state of Alabama and some other wonderful people, we will pay for the books and the postage to get them mailed to our Morgan County kids.” United Way held a launch celebration for the program Nov. 2 at United Launch Alliance, where some companies and organizations made contributions. Money for the program was donated

by Junior League of Morgan County, United Community Bank, United Launch Alliance and Turner Construction. There is at least a one-month gap, Ross said, between when the adult signs up the child and the child gets their first book due to processing. She said if the child is registered in November, they will likely receive their first book in January. Ross said people can register children on United Way of Morgan County’s website at uwmcal.org. “There’s a tab at the top that says Dolly Parton’s Imagination Library,” she said. “Or they can just Google Dolly Parton’s Imagination Library, and it’ll show them where to register. They just put in their zip code, and it’ll tell them, yes, it’s available in Morgan County, and they can complete the registration form online.”

income, is eligible to receive one free book a month. The Dollywood Foundation is in charge of choosing the books, and the first book a child will receive is “The Little Engine That Could.” “This is a dream come true,” Ross said. “Those kids will just enjoy their books. They’ll learn to go to the mailbox, and maybe today’s the day that Dolly sends them a book. I can’t imagine how excited they’ll be.” Ross said children enrolled in the library will learn more than just the basics. “These kids will not only learn their colors and their numbers, the alphabet, they will learn how to learn,” she said. “They will learn how to go to school and achieve what they want to achieve in life.
