As the medical team tried to lower Kelsey’s blood pressure, the doctor began preparing the Steffens for the possibility of an emergency C-section. “I was like, doctor, I am six months pregnant, you have to do everything you can so we don’t have this child today,” Kelsey said. “I had never known someone who had a baby at 24 weeks. I was scared.” In the hospital room, machines monitored Kelsey and the yet–to–be– born baby. Every time Kelsey’s blood
pressure would even out, the baby’s heart rate would drop. “We were never even. We were killing each other,” Kelsey said. The nurses began repeatedly asking John and Kelsey what they planned on naming their son. The Steffens, who were deciding between John Richard V and Elijah, opted for Elijah — after the Biblical figure who performed miracles. “The doctor finally said we were going to have this baby. I was crying and I was so frightened, but then I looked at John and I had all the confidence that we could do this. I knew he See MIRACLE, page 5

The beeping and buzzing of 2–year– old Elijah Steffen’s ventilator sounded through the den where a Christmas tree decorated with white lights, pine cones and angels stood and stockings embroidered with initials hung from the mantel. On the floor, Elijah rolled on his back, a tube snaking from his neck to the ventilator, and clapped his hands, mimicking his 6–year–old sister Nyla. “Last year and the year before, I didn’t care about Christmas. I didn’t care about anything. I didn’t want to celebrate,” Elijah’s mother Kelsey Steffen said. “I have been so excited for this Christmas because I get to be home with my husband, daughter and son. This is something I have dreamed of. It has been a long and hard journey to make this dream come true.” That journey began Dec. 2, 2021, when John and Kelsey left their home in Eva for Madison Hospital. “I had been having terrible migraines for three days. That morning, I told John I couldn’t take it anymore and we had to go to the hospital,” Kelsey said. Although they typically went to Cullman for their medical needs, Kelsey decided to go to Madison. “I don’t know what made me think we needed to go to Madison. I just knew,” Kelsey said. “We left our home with just the clothes on our backs. We never in a million years would have thought we were going to have our

HARTSELLE — Local food banks said they were successful in donating food to numerous families this month, but said they faced several challenges because of a decline in donations. Feeding Families of Alabama, located in Hartselle, donated food to over 300 people this Christmas but executive director Edee Grun said their stock was down from last month and the food they had available barely covered their client base. “We get a lot of donations in November and December and our goal is to not only carry us through those months, but carry us through January and February as well,” Grun said. “This year, we barely had enough to cover December.” Grun believes higher inflation this year has been a factor in dwindling donations and said it also played a part in several companies not being able to contribute to the organization this year. “Last year, we had corporations in Madison, Morgan and Limestone County to help

every bag to an individual “client choice program.” “Before, we would pre-pack the bags and everybody got the same amount so it would be fair, but we were seeing a lot of waste,” Grun said. “We were seeing a lot of food items come back in and they would be expired. With the client
choice program, it’s worked out tremendously because they can choose what items they want to take home to eat. This way, we don’t have to beg for donations of food that people are not going to eat.” Grun said most of her cliSee FOOD, page 5

By Jacob Hatcher For the Enquirer Abigail Lindley, originally from Mexico City, Mexico, recently achieved a significant milestone in her life by earning her U.S. citizenship. Lindley’s journey began when her mother and sister relocated to the United States almost two decades ago, leaving Lindley, then nine years old, in the care of her grandparents in Mexico City. Despite her mother’s persistent invitations to join her in the U.S., Lindley chose to stay in Mexico City until her grandparents passed away. During visits to her mother in Hartselle, Lindley attended ESL classes to enhance her English skills. It was during one of these visits that she crossed paths with Darren, her now-husband and longtime neighbor of her mother. Their friendship evolved into a romantic relationship, prompting Lindley to make the life-changing decision to stay in Hartselle in 2016. Transitioning from Mexico City, a city of nearly 9 million people, to the quieter pace of
Hartselle was a significant cultural shift for Lindley, one she embraced for its affordability and tranquility. Lindley initially came to the U.S. on a visa but aspired to become a citizen. After establishing residency, she waited the required five years before applying for citizenship. The process involved studying 100 questions covering civics, government, politics and

look back on 2023 offers little hope for improvement in the New Year as long as health issues, inflation, a divided government and violence stand in the way of peace and prosperity. The family was not able to get together because of contagious illnesses but were in touch by phone. After a visit to urgent care where I was pronounced negative for COVID and several of the seasonal ailments I was given a load of prescriptions to deal with severe congestion and became housebound for over a week. would be right there beside me,” Kelsey said. Elijah was born measuring 11 inches long and weighing 13 ounces — three ounces less than a pound. Think about the weight of a coke can, water bottle or can of tomato soup. The medical team questioned whether Elijah would survive. “I was in the waiting room when they brought Elijah out. All I could see at first were his hands and a little movement under the blanket. They asked if I wanted to see him. Of course, I did. He looked like a chick that first hatches. I stared at him for quite a while before they loaded him in the ambulance to take him to Huntsville Hospital for Women and Children,” John said. For the first three days after Elijah’s birth, John juggled work with visiting Kelsey at the hospital in Madison and checking on Elijah in Huntsville. When the hospital released Kelsey, she headed straight for Elijah. “That was the first time I saw him, three days after he was born,” Kelsey said. “When I saw him, I was like, that’s not my baby, that’s an alien. He was so tiny and fragile.” “Those first stages of his life were very difficult,” John said. “It was like we would take one step forward and

ent base consists of elderly residents who are on fixed incomes living in the rural parts of Morgan County. She said this month they have had to ration out certain items and were not able to distribute as much as in years past. “Instead of three cans of green beans, you may only get one this month,” Grun said. “We can’t give extra because we don’t have extra to give.” School districts in Morgan County offer free breakfast or lunch to students, an advantage for those whose families
Lacey’s Spring, Mahan’s academic trajectory saw him graduate from Brewer High School after completing his early education at Lacey’s Spring School. Armed with a Secondary Mathematics Degree from Auburn University, he furthered his commitment to education by obtaining a master’s degree and an EDs in Educational Leadership from Samford University. Mahan’s teaching career spans 12 years of instructing middle school mathematics at Union Hill, where he also shared his expertise in Agriscience across various middle schools. His dedica-
tion to education led him to spend two years teaching high school mathematics at Brewer High School before assuming his current role. Beyond the classroom, Mahan’s influence extends to the sports arena, with 12 years of coaching middle school basketball at Union Hill and a decade coaching high school football at Brewer. Away from the hustle of daily life, the Mahan family finds solace in the mountains and the beach, enjoying outdoor activities and the sport of golf.
then two steps back.” On Jan. 2, 2022, John and Kelsey were able to hold their son for the first time. “It was the best feeling ever. That was the first time I felt close to him. He literally fit on my chest,” Kelsey said, motioning from her neck to the middle of her sternum. “Usually, they only let you do skin-to-skin for 30 minutes, but he tolerated it for two hours. I remember his tiny hands rubbing and tapping my chest. He still does that to this day.” After three months at Huntsville Hospital, Elijah, who had a hole in his intestines at birth, was diagnosed with chronic lung disease and pulmonary hypertension, had a gastrostomy tube inserted in his stomach for nutrition, and suffered multiple broken bones and fractures due to his fragility — “Something as simple as just changing his diaper could result in a broken bone” Kelsey said — was transferred to Children’s Hospital of Alabama in Birmingham. “The nurses and doctors at Huntsville were amazing. We are so thankful for them, but they had reached the limit of what they could offer in care for him,” Kelsey said. “Throughout this whole journey, we have said that we didn’t care what it took, whatever was best for Elijah is what we were going to do. We would’ve taken him all the way across the country if we had to.”
The decision to transfer Elijah to Children’s Hospital meant Kelsey, who was able to visit him every other day while in Huntsville, could only visit him on the weekends. “I would have done anything to be with my kid every day, but those just weren’t the cards we were dealt,” Kelsey said. “I had to leave Elijah in God’s hands. I had no other choice. We still had our bills to pay. Even though I couldn’t be there, I was calling the nurses multiple times a day to check on him.” John and Kelsey made sure the nurses felt appreciated. They left notes for them, got them small gifts and constantly thanked them. “They were taking care of our child. We needed them to know how valuable they were to us because we had to let go of something so valuable to us and allow them to take care of him,” Kelsey said. The weekends Kelsey spent at the hospital decreased to one day a week so she could spend more time with her stepdaughter Nyla. “We were so laser–focused on Elijah that Nyla started acting out a little. Even though John’s parents were taking such good care of her, she needed us, too. I had to make a choice, and it was difficult one, to split the little time I had with Elijah so I could have time with Nyla,” Kelsey said. “We would have dates at Texas Roadhouse,
our favorite restaurant, or we would eat Mexican.” John and Kelsey remember intimately the first time Nyla met Elijah. “She was so still while she held him. She stared at him and rubbed his arms and legs. He fell asleep right in her arms,” Kelsey said. Nyla, along with John and Kelsey, would pray nightly for Elijah’s healing, which, at times, seemed in doubt. During their monthly meetings with a team of six doctors about Elijah’s care, they learned in detail the challenges facing their son. “In some of those meetings they thought he wasn’t going to make it because he had chronic lung disease and hypertension. Every time his lungs wouldn’t work properly, his heart would overwork. It would cause him to go into hypertension crisis, which could cause him to die. He was on that roller coaster ride many times,” Kelsey said. To ease his breathing, the medical team performed a tracheostomy in October 2022. Elijah also underwent multiple eye surgeries to repair his retina and correct his vision. In April, when the hospital moved Elijah to the 10th floor, John and Kelsey felt relief. “To me, getting to the 10th floor was the biggest goal. I knew that was the last stop before we would get to go home. Once we got to the 10th floor, that was when,
for the first time since Elijah was born, I felt relaxed,” Kelsey said. Before John and Kelsey could take their son home, they attended a 12-lesson training program on how to use Elijah’s medical equipment. “I thought I knew about the ventilator and the trach, but when we started training, I realized I knew nothing. They wanted you to be prepared for what to do in an emergency. All I could think about was Elijah was going to have an emergency and I wasn’t going to know what to do,” Kelsey said. In late August, Elijah came home. “I am so thankful for everyone that God put in our paths at the hospital. The nurses loved on him and on us so much. As he gets older, I will tell him all about the nurses that took care of him. They are part of why he is who he is,” Kelsey said. His first night at home, Elijah slept through the night. John and Kelsey did not. “Those first days were rough. I was very scared, but Elijah did great. He acted like he had lived here his whole life,” Kelsey said. “The nurses had told us that he was pretty good at sleeping through the night. Every now and then he’ll get up around 4 a.m. and do a little song and dance and then go back to sleep. Literally, he sings and dances.” Since coming home, Elijah has started crawling, has
shown interest in standing and has been weaned from his oxygen some. He undergoes occupational therapy, physical therapy and speech. “All of the doctors and therapists who have seen him have been amazed at how well he is doing. They said he is thriving,” John said. John and Kelsey love watching the relationship forming between Nyla and Elijah, who now weighs 23 pounds. “That has been amazing. They love each other so much. She is so loving and so protective of him and he is just so happy. He has the joy of the Lord,” Kelsey said. For Kelsey and John, witnessing Elijah’s journey has led them to God. “I grew up in the church, but I also ran from the church,” Kelsey said. “My relationship with God before I had Elijah was not there. Having Elijah forced me to lean on God. One day, after trying to do everything myself, I said, ‘OK God, I have no other choice.’ Once I gave it over to God, things started happening.” “I was an atheist. I didn’t believe in God. I believed in science,” John said. “But through the little miracles I have seen through Elijah and other children at the hospital, I believe now. There’s definite proof he is around us everywhere.”

struggle to buy food at home — but not during vacations. Grun said her food bank’s lack of donations made it difficult to feed those students. “When we know they’re going to be out for a long school vacation, we try to really ramp it up with kidfriendly foods,” Grun said. “We start collecting for the (December) food pantry beginning the week after Thanksgiving.” Bishop Barry Strong of St. Andrew Church of Grace in Decatur said donations to his church’s food pantry this month have also been low. “We’ve been able to serve some people this month, but we’ve been out of some things that people need like fruit
and other items,” Strong said. “We’ve had some volunteers sick and out for the holidays so we haven’t served as much as we would like to serve.” Strong said he and his congregation served food to 60 families this month, a number he said has more than tripled since before the pandemic began. “Before the pandemic started, we would be serving food to around 17 or 18 families in December,” Strong said. Not only is there a larger population of individuals in need now, but Strong said that need is spread among several demographics from all over north Alabama. “It was more African-American because our church is
in their neighborhood,” Strong said. “Now I’m seeing more white and Hispanic people, faces I’ve never seen before. They’re also coming from outside the area like Lawrence County and other counties.” Strong said he believes his clientele has grown because of inflation and higher expenses that all people have to pay. “A couple years ago, rent went up for a lot of people,” Strong said. “I’ve talked to those people, and a lot of them are selling their food stamps just to pay rent and other bills.”

“I’m Glad My Mom Died” By Jennette McCurdy In her heartbreaking and dark humor filled memoir, actress and writer Jennette McCurdy details how her unhealthy relationship with her mother caused her to become a child actor, develop eating disorders, and spend most of her life trying to fit the image her mother craved. of six, despite being a shy child, Jennette had her first tv show audition. The only reason she did the audition was to garnish her mother’s approval. At age eleven, Jennette thought her mother would no longer love her if she hit puberty. So, she asked her mother how to stunt her growth and her mother introduced her to “calorie restriction” and anorexia. At sixteen, her mother still refused to let Jennette shower alone, send emails or manage her own income. All those actions are examples of her mother’s repeated and prolonged physical, mental, emotional, and sexual abuse. However, the dark actions are accompanied with dark humor of how Jennette sees these

toes then use a food processor or hand grater to grate them into large shreds. As you shred them, put them in a large bowl and cover with cold water. Let the potatoes sit a few minutes while you prepare the rest of the ingredients. Melt the duck fat in a small skillet or saucepan. Peel the red onion and cut it in half. Dice one half of the onion and shred or grate the other half. You can also grate it all for more onion flavor or dice it all for a little less. In a mixing bowl, whisk together the eggs, salt and pepper until they are nice and fluffy. Pour the potato shreds into a colander. Push down and squeezeevery bit of liquid out that you can. Place the drained potatoes in a large mixing bowl. Sprinkle the potato starch over the potatoes and give them a quick toss with your hands to coat. Add the seasoned eggs and diced and grated onion to the bowl. Toss to mix the ingredi-
ents together. Take your preheated baking dish out of the oven. Pour half of the melted duck fat into the hot pan and spread it all over the bottom with a basting or pastry brush. Immediately add the potato mixture to the hot pan and hear that lovely sizzle! Spread the potatoes all out evenly in the pan. Use the brush to spread the remaining duck fat all over the top of the potatoes. Bake uncovered for 60-70 minutes or until the top is nicely browned on the top. If you think it is getting browned too quickly as it bakes, simply tent the pan with some foil. The top should be nicely golden. If, when the kugel is done baking, you want it a little more browned, pop it under the broiler for a couple minutes. Let it rest for 5-10 minutes before serving. To serve: Potato kugel is great plain, but you can also top it with sour cream and minced chives or scallions.

Dana Vandiver, spokesperson for the Alabama Association of School Boards, said the academy was founded in 1986 to provide a forum for board members to learn more about issues facing public education and to hone their leadership skills. Some training has been required of local school board members since 2012 by state law. “Now with the School Board Governance Act, there is a law for school board members in Alabama to annually earn six hours worth of training credit,” Vandiver said. “Two of those have to be with their whole board, so part of the School Board Academy allows them to take their training.” Vandiver said once an individual is elected as a school board member, they are automatically enrolled in
