By Wes Tomlinson For the Enquirer After hearing the word he was to spell, the look on Priceville Junior High’s Zane Ferguson made clear he knew he was on the verge of winning this year’s Morgan County Spelling Bee. His assumption proved correct as he spelled the word: “a-s-s-u-m-p-t-i-o-n.” This past Thursday, 34 students competed in the annual spelling bee from Morgan County Schools, Decatur City Schools, Hartselle City Schools, Decatur Heritage Christian Academy and Saint Ann Catholic School. These students were the top spellers from their respective schools. Ferguson, who is in sixth grade, said he has made it to the district spelling bee two times before but this is the first time he has won. He said the secret was to practice syllables within words when spelling them out. “I would write down the syllables of every word I practiced, and I think that helped a lot,” Ferguson said. Students battled it out quickly and by round 5 only four students remained. Ferguson said the words “heptad,” meaning a group of seven, and “gullibility” were intimidating as he had not heard of them prior to the competition, but the judges confirmed he spelled them correctly and the audience applauded. Two other students tied to earn the second-place trophy: Claudia Burroghs from Hartselle Junior High, and Mia Hamilton from Cotaco School in the Morgan County school district. Hamilton, who won a spelling bee in her school before advancing, said this was her first time competing in the PHOTOS BY JERONIMO NISA district spelling bee. “The year before, I went into the spelling competition and Morgan County Spelling Bee winner Zane Ferguson smiles as he spells the last word — “assumption” — at the end of the competition at Central Baptist See SPELLING, page 8 correctly Church Feb. 1.

t was not the best of times for me when I was supposed to start first grade at John S. Jones Elementary School in Etowah County in September 1941. I was following in the footsteps of a brilliant older sister, Annelle, who got everything right on the first try. She cried when she didn’t have all A’s on her report card as a first and second grader. I thought reading, writing and arithmetic were for sissies and I didn’t want to leave my younger brother, Billy, home to play with by himself. More importantly, our country was on the brink of World War II. These excuses, along with a streak of stubborn pride, got me in trouble with my parents on the first day of school.

F

ebruary 7 will mark the 64th anniversary of my ordination into vocational Christian ministry. At the request of the Bienville Mission of Central Baptist Church in New Orleans, where I was serving as a student pastor, Lebanon convened an ordination council led by the Morgan Baptist Association Director of Missions and composed of a number of ordained ministers from the area. Following a recommendation of the council the church proceeded with a special service. That was certainly a milestone for me. It has led me far beyond anything I could ever envision. It has brought many blessings into my life as it opened the way for ministry in various roles including that of pastor, hospice chaplain, and director of missions, and participation in mission trips beyond the US which led me to the UK, and ten extended trips to Spain where for fifteen years Effie and I ministered with a church as they expanded and developed new ministries. In my

It has reached far beyond anything I could have envisioned as a youth growing up on a small cotton farm. It has not always been easy. On many occasions, I have had to call upon the power of faith to see me through difficult times. There have been disappointments along the way which have precipitated other milestone moments. But by the grace and mercy of God, I have

and threw rocks at imaginary varmints as the minutes of my hooky playing adventure ticked away. Then the reality of my wrongdoing took control. I was hungry and missed the lunch I would’ve eaten had I gone to school. I was fearful of the punishment I would receive when I got home and my parents learned what I had done. Instead of going home then, confessing what I had done and taking a whipping, I decided to show up at the bus stop and return home with my sister, hoping that my parents would never find out what I had done. That decision was a mistake. My sister had struggled through her first day in third grade wondering what happened to her mischievous younger brother and she

Mission Statement wasn’t going to let me off the hook. She was the first one off the bus. She glared at me in disgust and began running home, never looking back when I begged her not to tell our mother where I had been that day. The remainder of my first year in school left a lot to be desired. I was left-handed and the only one in my class. My teacher forced me to use my right hand when she was teaching us how to write. Consequently, I went through the fourth grade before I learned to write cursive. In addition, our country declared war against Japan and Germany in that year and several of the 18-year-old and older seniors in our school received draft notices to report for military duty.

persevered along the way. My friend Bill, leader of a small group of men in which I participate, does not discount the providence of God but insists much of life is determined by choices we have made or are making. Many such choices were foundational to my life. In 1954 when at the age of 17 I graduated high school there was a choice I had to make as to how I wanted to spend the rest of my life. At the time there seemed to be one of three careers I could choose. I had been a leader in the Future Farmers of America club. My advisor encouraged me to pursue a degree in a related field of study. I had been a leader in the youth group of the church. My pastor and church leaders wanted me to get a Christian education and find my place in a church-related vocation. For the summer I had secured a good-paying job in construction work with the promise of developing skills for advancement if I continued in it. As I have related in my book “My

Journey in Faith” I had returned from Ohio where I had been working for a visit during a long Labor Day weekend when a decision was made which determined how my life’s journey would unfold. I had been restless for a number of days pondering what my future would hold. On the day I was scheduled to return to Ohio, I decided instead to go unannounced to Tennessee Temple College in Chattanooga and seek enrollment. My acceptance was a milestone in my journey. Another came five years later when I was accepted into New Orleans Baptist Theological Seminary for further study. Many more could be remembered which marked my progress along the way. In no way am I worthy to be mentioned in the same conversation with the great men and women whose faith has been heralded in the roll call of the faithful in Hebrews Chapter eleven. It is said of Moses that he chose “to suffer affliction with the people of God, than to enjoy the pleasured of sin for a season.”

in Florence, AL. It was Christmas time in each, and what stands out to me is that in each photo Papa is talking to one of his three sons. In one, he’s talking to Daddy on an old couch. A family heirloom that’s now in my childhood home. He’s wearing his short sleeved coveralls and tall lace up boots. Just the way I remember him. It’s not really exceptional that he would talk to his sons except for the fact that that is precisely how I remember him. He was a Gideon, an engineer, a leader in his church, a husband, and a gardener. While he excelled at all of those

things, his example of what a Father is stands out the most to me and these photos represent that so well. He was present and interested. He was patient and kind. He lead by example and integrity. He was what my Daddy tried to be and what I have spent the last nearly ten years trying to be too. I look at these pictures often and wonder what they were talking about; I wish we’d known to take more photos, but maybe it’s the few stolen moments that we do have that makes them more precious.

’ To the younger generation, it may come as a shock to know that there was a time when we did not carry cameras around in our pocket every second of every day. There was a time when we just had to remember how things looked. Heaven knows how we made it all those years without being able to look back at the hamburger we had a few months back. Obviously cameras existed when I was a kid, but not every family had one and we weren’t exceptional at keeping up with the photos after they were developed, so it’s always a pleasant surprise when one fam-

ily member or another comes across a previously unknown photo. You see, developing photos was…well.. nevermind. Two such photos have Jacob Hatcher recently sur- Community faced, each of Columnist them candid moments captured at my Nana and Papa’s house

The suspects fled from Hartselle police into Falkville, where Falkville police stopped their vehicle. The three suspects then fled on foot in the area of U.S. 31 and West Piney Grove Road. Sheriff ’s deputies and Cullman County K9 units are searching the area. “Due to the proximity of

Break your eggs into a mixing bowl and beat the eggs with a whisk until they are frothy. The more air you can get into the eggs, the lighter your quiche will be. Squeeze the zucchini with your hand to extract as much juice as possible. Add the zucchini, shredded carrots and remaining ingredients into the eggs. Stir to combine. Spread the mixture into prepared baking dish. Bake for 45 minutes or until the quiche is golden around the edges.

INSTRUCTIONS To begin, preheat oven to 375 degrees. Grease or oil a 9×13-inch baking dish. Set aside for now. Place the shredded zucchini in a colander and sprinkle with the salt. Toss the zucchini to get the salt mixed in. Allow the moisture to pull from the zucchini. This will give you a better textured quiche. I normally let this sit while I shred the carrots and prep the rest of the ingredients.

With a growing number of people seeking its services and funding being cut, Meals on Wheels & More is looking for donations and volunteers. “The demand for our services has increased tremendously,” food service manager Shontez Wynn said. “Last year I’m not sure if we had anyone on hold, and if we did that number never got over five waiting to be added to the program. “At this current time, we have about 40 clients waiting to be added to the program. Some of the clients have been waiting since September of 2023 to be notified when they will start receiving meals from Meals On Wheels & More.” Wynn said the organization needs financial support from the community and volunteers who can take one to two hours each week to deliver food. “If the volunteer has a group of four that can alternate weeks with them then they will only be volunteering once a month. I will always work with anyone that can volunteer every other week,” she said. Since 1972, Meals On Wheels & More has served residents of Morgan County within the Decatur and Hartselle city limits. Staffed largely by volunteers, the program, operated by Com-

munity Action Partnership of North Alabama, delivers meals to disabled, elderly and homebound residents. The Decatur Daily annually accepts financial contributions for the program throughout February and publishes the names of contributors who want to be recognized. This year’s goal is $40,000. “Last year our final amount raised was $26,340, which was amazing,” Cindy Anderson, director of community services for CAPNA, said of the Decatur Daily’s drive. “Nonprofits including (Meals

Ferguson will now prepare to compete in the state spelling bee, to be held in March. He smiled when asked about his game plan for the competition. “Just study,” he said. Morgan County Superintendent Tracie Turrentine said she was proud of the achievements of students who participated Thursday and looks forward to Ferguson representing Morgan County Schools in the state spelling bee. “It is not easy to speak in public,” Turrentine said. “We are proud of every student in Morgan County who participated in the spelling bee and this is just one example of everything that our students and teachers are doing in the classroom is working.” The last two years, the Morgan County Spelling Bee was won by former Austin Middle student Deep Patel. In a collaborative effort, Morgan County and Lawrence County 4H programs have joined forces to present a spectacular showcase featuring 32 pigs exhibited by 16 talented youth. The event, hosted by the Morgan County Extension Office, is set to take place at the Moulton Lion’s Club Fairgrounds on May 11. Participants in the program were provided with two feeder pigs in January, initiating a journey of care and training leading up to the grand event. A crucial step in their preparation was a mandatory meeting

conducted by the Morgan County Extension Office. During this session, the young enthusiasts gained insights into constructing proper pens and facilities to ensure the well-being of their project animals upon their arrival. Emphasizing the importance of responsible pig management, the Extension Office addressed key aspects such as feeding and health care before the project began. Subsequently, the youth will partake in ongoing training events, including regular meetings facilitated by the Extension Office. Additional support and guidance will be provided through home visits by 4H Agent Juliana Gardner and County Extension Coordinator Brett Crow. The culmination of their efforts will be showcased on May 11 in a competitive exhibition. The youths’ proficiency in presenting their animals will be scrutinized in the “showmanship” division, followed by the evaluation of the swine in “market classes,” focusing on traits such as potential

carcass value. The event’s grand finale will feature an auction where local business owners and community members can bid on the showcased pigs. This provides an opportunity for them to fill their freezers with locally raised pork while supporting the dedicated youth who have invested time and effort into their projects. Beyond the exhibition and auction, this initiative serves as a platform to instill values of responsibility, strong work ethic, and animal husbandry practices, according to Crow. “Ultimately, it cultivates

sportsmanship among the participating youth, imparting valuable lessons on their role in contributing to the local food chain,” he said. As we all know food is rather expensive to have to throw away, so the decision not to cook on Thursday’s right now is due to some unstable volunteer/ staffing issues.” Currently there are 57 weekly volunteers delivering to 300 clients. Due to the vulnerability of Meals on Wheels

recipients, volunteers must fill out an application form and undergo a background check. “Meals On Wheels & More is more than just a meal. We are big on our clients’ wellbeing and safety. We help the clients get assistance through other programs that we may not offer or they may not be aware of,” Wynn said. Wynn is assisted by five part-time staff members in addition to one employee contracted through NARCOG and one volunteer at the kitchen, located at 1510 Fourth Ave. S.E. in Decatur. “I love what I do so I go the extra mile to make sure these clients have what they need on a weekly basis,” Wynn said. “One day this could very well be me needing community support to make sure I’m safe and receiving nutritional food to live a great quality life when I’m no longer capable of doing those things for myself.” Anyone interested in volunteering can contact Wynn at 256-351-6850, 256-5653386 or shontez.wynn@ capna.org.

for the Meals On Wheels & More services, as the costs are covered through the United Way funding as well as partnerships with local businesses, churches, other local organizations and private donations. Benefits for recipients, according to Wynn, include enabling them to remain independent and in their own home, providing regular contact and some social interaction with others, reducing food costs to the recipient and their family, and providing temporary assistance during times of transition when dealing with traumatic life-changing events such as illness, accidents or surgeries. Thursday deliveries were reinstated in July, which marked the first time for five-day food service to clients since 2020. After the pandemic reduced delivery to once a week that year, Meals on Wheels increased to Monday and Wednesday deliveries in July 2021. The program moved from three deliveries per week to four in March when it resumed Tuesday service. “(Thursdays have) been a

Morgan County tournament: Brewer boys win first county title in 14 years, Priceville girls three-peats

By Caleb Suggs For the Enquirer SOMERVILLE — For the first time since 2010, the Brewer boys are champions of Morgan County. On their home court Tuesday night, the Patriots upset top seeded Danville 60-57 in the finals of the Morgan County tournament to win their first county title in 14 years. “I was a junior on that team in 2010,” said Brewer head coach Matthew Crowe. “It’s been 14 years, and this is an incredible thing for our program. Trailing 57-55 with under a minute to go, Jackson Dunn stepped up to be the hero Brewer needed. With 40 seconds left, the junior swished a go-ahead 3-pointer that proved to be the game winner. “We were down by two, and I knew we needed a shot. I pulled the trigger, and it went in,” Dunn said. Brewer had to overcome a deficit to pull out the win, as Danville stayed in control nearly the entire game. The Hawks led 20-16 after the first quarter, 34-28 at halftime and 47-44 after three quarters. Brewer never panicked. “We knew the hole that we were in there,” said junior Austyn Holmes. “We knew if we just sat down and played some defense, eventually we’d get the shot that we needed.” Holmes led the team with 22 points and was name the tournament’s MVP. Cason Oden added 18 points for the Patriots, while AJ Holladay

By Russell Frye For the Enquirer The Hartselle Tigers defeated Athens 40-37 to give coach Faron Key win number 173 at Hartselle. He passed Don Pouncey’s 172 career wins as the Tigers’ head coach. “It is special to pass coach Pouncey’s record of 172 wins at Hartselle,” Key said. “Coach Pouncey was a tremendous supporter of mine when I came to Hartselle. I was blessed to be able to call him my friend.” The Tigers jumped out to a 16-5 lead in the first quarter but saw Athens cut the lead to 22-15 at the half.

Holmes, Dunn and Holladay as well as Nathan West (Danville), Ben Ellenburg (Danville), Dawson Fowler (Falkville), Caden Butler (Falkville), Jay Garland (West Morgan) Jalen Fletcher (West Morgan ), Sammy Holmes (Priceville ) and Luke Hood (Priceville) were named to the all-tournament team. With the team’s first county championship in 14 years now in hand, Crowe said the future looks bright for Brewer boys basketball. “We have a lot of young guys, and we’re moving in the right direction. This feels like just the beginning of an exciting time for us,” Crowe said. Priceville girls win third straight title Just two years ago, Priceville was the plucky underdog team winning the school’s first Morgan County championship for girls. Now, after winning their third consecutive championship, the Bulldogs are the gold standard for girls basketball in the county. “I’ll be honest with you, this is special and something I wanted really bad,” said Priceville head coach Terrie Nelson. “What’s crazy is my seniors, this is their sixth in the row going back to middle school. They’ve never lost.” Priceville put on a dominant showing to win its third title Tuesday night, defeating Falkville 62-22. The Bulldogs led just 9-8 after the first quarter but outscored the Blue Devils 21-2 in the second to take a 30-10 lead at halftime. By the end

The Golden Eagles continued their comeback by outscoring Hartselle 15-5 in the third quarter to take a 30-27 lead into the final quarter. Athens extended their lead to five early in the fourth quarter. However, the Tigers battled back by outscoring the Golden Eagles 11-3 the rest of the way to complete the comeback. Ty Odom finished with 16 points to lead Hartselle (13-14). Rylan Smothers added nine points and five rebounds. Reflecting on last season’s performance, where the Tigers fell to eventual state champions Fort Payne in the playoffs, Ben-

nich expressed optimism about surpassing previous achievements. Team captains Jack Adams, Owen Bennich and Luke Minnon shared their thoughts on the upcoming season, highlighting the team’s aspirations to build on their previous success. Adams emphasized the team’s identity of playing with heart, despite potential technical and athletic disparities with opponents. With the departure of former coach Atkins to Opelika, the team acknowledges the responsibility falling on the seniors to uphold the team’s culture. Minnon highlighted the unique opportunity for long-standing members to leverage their experience and cohesion to guide the team forward. “Six or seven of us have been starting since sophomore year, so the unit has grown together for what will be our third year,” Minnon said. “Usually, you have class after class rotate out, but we have a unique opportunity to have been able to gather experience with each other and I think that all the growth and the discipline that we’ve learned over the years is now

We’re kind of like holding the culture and we want to leave it good for everybody else now,” Owen Bennich added. Joining the coaching staff this season is assistant coach Luke Sutherland, who expressed admiration for the intensity and passion exhibited by the players. Sutherland commended the team’s welcoming attitude and camaraderie, despite his newcomer status to the sport. “I’m new to this sport, but it’s a great sport and I’m enjoying it. What I really like is the incredible intensity and passion these young men have,” Sutherland said. “I really appreciate the way the kids have welcomed me with open arms and have been supportive and helpful.” The Tigers invite fans to support them in their home game Friday night against East Limestone at Groover Field, with the Junior Varsity game commencing at 5 p.m. followed by the Varsity game at 7 p.m.

“Section 71.01 (A) The following words and phrases, whenever used in this amendment, shall have the following respective meanings: “Basic Appropriations” means, with respect to any regular session of the legislature, such appropriations as the legislature may deem appropriate for the expenditures by the state during the ensuing budget period for the ordinary expenses of the executive, legislative and judicial departments branches of the state, for payment of the public debt, and for education (excluding, however, any item within the scope of the foregoing that is at the time provided for by a continuing appropriation or otherwise). “Budget Period” means a fiscal year of the state or such period other than [a] a fiscal year as may hereafter be fixed by law as the period with respect to which state budgets are prepared and state appropriations are made. (B) On or before the second legislative day of each regular session of the legislature, beginning with the first reg ular session after January 1, 1983, the governor shall transmit to the legislature for its consideration a proposed budget for the then next ensuing budget period. (C) The duty of the legislature at any regular session to make the basic appropriations for any budget period that will commence before the first day of any succeeding regular session shall be paramount; and, accordingly, beginning with the first regular session held after January 1, 1983, no bill (other than a bill making any of the basic appropriations) shall be signed by either the presiding officer of the house or senate and transmitted to the other house until bills making the basic appropriations for the then ensuing budget period shall have been signed by the presiding officer of each house of the legislature in accordance with Section 66 of this Constitution and presented to the governor in accordance with Section 125 of this Constitution; provided, that this paragraph (C) shall not affect the passage of local laws or local constitutional amendments, the adoption of resolutions, or the conduct of any other legislative functions that do not require a third reading; and provided further, that following adoption, by vote of either house of not less than threefifths of a quorum present, of a resolution declaring that the provisions of this paragraph (C) shall not be applicable in that house to a particular bill, which shall be specified in said resolution by number and title, the bill so specified may proceed to final passage therein. (D) Upon the signing and presentation to the governor in accordance with the said
