Skuceisaccusedofpaying Delp$30,000tokillSheppardaftershefoundDelp throughafakeFacebook account,accordingtoinvestigators.She’schargedwith capitalmurder.

Threeothersaccusedof beingaccomplicesarealso chargedwithcapitalmurder:AngelaStolz,37;Aaron Howard,42;andLaJuhn Smart,27.

Allfivehaveremainedin MorganCountyJailwithout bondwhileawaitingtrial.

OnWednesday,theyshuffledwithshacklesintoCircuitJudgeJenniferHowell’s courtroomforastatusconferenceonthecasesagainst them.

Acourtordertoschedule thetrialhadnotyetbeen filedasofThursdayafternoon,accordingtocourt records;however,Delp’s attorney,BrianWhite,said thepartiesdecidedtobegin juryselectiononOct.16at 9a.m.

“Thenwe’llbeginthetrial inearnestonOct.21,”he said.

DistrictAttorneyScott Andersonsaidthecase lookstobein“agoodposture”toproceedtotrial.

“Withcapitalmurder cases,everyonehasto takeextraprecautionto makecertainthatallthe i’saredottedandthet’sare crossed,”hesaid.“Ifthey aren’t,thenwehavetoback upandmakesurethatwe haveeveryoneandeverythinginplace.”

RobertTuten,oneofStolz’s attorneys,saidhisclientis lookingforwardtothecase movingalong.

“Youknow,theevidenceis shapinguptolooklikeshe’s notasdirectlyinvolvedas everyonefirstthoughtwhen everyonewasfirstarrested,” hesaid.“Apparently,shewas notpresentwhentheactual personwaskilled,sowe’re

Thehomeownerarmed himselfandawaitedthe deputy’sarrival,theSheriff’s Officesaid,butbeforedeputiesarrived,theoffender kickedinthehomeowner’s doorandenteredtheresi-

dence.Thehomeownershot him,theSheriff’sOffice said,andtheburglarleftthe houseanddiedoutside. Investigatorsidentified thedeceasedasChristopherJasonHovis,44,of

Hartselle.

“Thisinvestigationis ongoing;however,preliminaryresultsindicatethisisa justifiedshooting,andthere arenochargesatthistime,” theSheriff’sOfficesaid.

Ina2022 motiontoset bondforHoward, attorneyCarlCole saidhisclientwas beingheldwithoutbondsolely becausehehad beencharged withcapitalmurder.

Colewrote“that theallegations madeagainstthisdefendant arethatheservedasa‘lookout.’Itisundisputedthathe didnotpullthetrigger.In fact,itisundisputedthathe wasnotatthesceneofthe crime.”

Atthetime,Andersonsaid theprosecutiondidnotarbitrarilychargeHowardwitha capitaloffense,andthatthe chargeshouldprecludehis releaseonbond.

Inhercourtorderregardingthebondmotion,Howelllistedseveralreasonsfor denyingHowardbond:He hasacriminalhistoryincludingdrugpossessionandan out-of-stateconvictionfor assaultwithadangerous weapon;DelptoldinvestigatorsthatheusedHowardto “getgirlsandbringthemto (him),”therebyindicatinga criminalreputation;Howard’sco-defendantssaidhe waspaidforassistinginthe crime;andtheprobability ofaconviction.

InSkuce’scase,herattorneysin2022attachedseverallettersinsupportofher character,mainlyfromcommunityChristianorganizationswithwhomsheapparentlytookclasseswhile incarcerated.

Mostnotably,heroldestdaughterwrotealetter addressedtoHowell.

“ThelasttimeIgottosee herwasinourlivingroom, overtwoyearsago,inthe middleofthenightwithmy motherinhandcuffs,”the letterreads.“Ourfamilyhas beentornapart….Sheisa wonderfulmother,andall shehasdoneisprotectand loveus.”

Howellultimatelydenied thebond.

“Thereisstrongcircumstantialevidenceregarding motive,theco-defendants whowerecapturedonvideo shootingSheppardimplicatedthedefendant,andthe defendantadmittedthatshe soughtoutprofilepictures withgunstofindsomeone tocontactandthatshepaid someonetohelpher,”Howellwroteinherruling.

Students from Priceville JuniorHighSchoolvisited the HudsonAlpha Institute for Biotechnology Feb. 1. Erica Eaton’s seventh and eighth grade sci-

ence students participated in a learning activity facilitated by HudsonAlpha’s April Reis called Exploring Enzymes. Students investigated enzymes and learned about enzyme specificity using locks and keysanddiscussedtherole

ofenzymaticreactionsduring the digestion of a fastfood meal. In addition, students evaluated several enzymes by creating apple juice and observed an enzymatic action in real time as they created cheese. This field trip and

other Morgan County Schools groups were funded by a generous donation from the Morgan County Schools Foundation. Reis and the rest of HudsonAlpha’s Educational Outreach team work to foster a genetics-literate society

andtrainAlabama’sfuture biotechnology workforce. HudsonAlpha is a nonprofit organization dedicated to using genomics to improve life through discovery, education and economic development in the genomic sciences.

FlashFiber, the high-speed fiber internet provider started by Joe Wheeler EMC, is excited to announce a significant milestone as it welcomes the Kilgo family of Hartselle as its 10,000th customer. In celebration of this momentous occasion, representatives from FlashFiber, joined by representatives of both the Hartselle and Decatur-Morgan Chambers of Commerce, gathered to honor the Kilgo family and express gratitude fortheirsupport.

ServingintheArmy,hewas proud of his training in the military and being stationed inAugsburg,Germany.

He was very sharp, intelligent and a natural leader. After returning from overseas, he attended and graduated from Athens State University. He excelled and dedicated much of his life to his career in government contracts and procurement where he developed lifelong friendships. He served as President, CFO and in other executive roles with various companies.

However, his most successfulrolewasundoubtedlyasa lovingfather.Nomatterwhat he went through in life, his daughters always knew they werelovedandviceversa.

Helovedcars,especiallythe fastandloudkind,butwould not shy away from a boat or truck either. He also loved Alabama football, fishing andmusic.

Steve’s smile, laugh, witty jabs, jokes, heartfelt and hilarious stories, unwaveringsupport,adviceandmost importantly his love will be rememberedandmissed.

Steve is survived by his daughters, Korri (Phillip) Dutton and Leslie Brown; Grandchildren, Ember (Chad) Hill, Clayton, Sage, Sierra, Colton, Cash, Lane and Reed Dutton; Great Grandchild, Hollis; Brother, Tim (Jennifer) Brown; and Nephews, Temon and Hoyt Brown. After retiring from the Air Force, he earned a Bachelor of Science Degree in Business Administration from Steed College in Johnson City, Tenn. He particularly valued his service in the Honor Guard. His commitment to Post 15 in Decatur, Alabama brought him much joyandmanyhappytimes. David Test, 65, passed awayonSunday,February4, 2024, at Athens-Limestone Hospital. He was born August 26, 1958. He was employed at the Lurleen B. Wallace Center as a Supervisor, prior to his passing. He loved Alabama Football, fishing, enjoyed riding though the parks and watching the wildlife.
