Culinary event to feature restaurants, breweries, bakeries, coffee shops and more

For the Enquirer

Here’s the dish. Plate by plate, from seafood gumbo to craft beer and homemade coffee roasts to street tacos, the Taste of the Valley will showcase Morgan County’s culinary landscape, from longstanding restaurants, such as Simp McGhee’s and The Brick Deli, to newcomers, such as 609 Social and Main Street Bakery Café.

“There’s going to be a smorgasbord of coffee, ice cream, sweet treats, wine, beer, seafood, pasta and pizza. Whatever you are hankering for you will find it here,” said Quay Lively, the Volunteer Center of Morgan County’s volunteer coordinator.

The Volunteer Center’s 38th annual Taste of the Valley fundraiser will take

place Monday, 6-8 p.m., at Ingalls Harbor. Organizers expect 250 to 350 people to attend the celebration of food, which will feature offerings from more than 30 restaurants, bakeries, breweries, coffee houses, food trucks and ice cream shops. “This is a great way to see what Decatur and Morgan County have to offer. There are so many great eateries, restaurants and food trucks to sample from,” Lively said. “This year we were very intentional about get-

Hartselle High Medical Academy students practice on new EKG simulator

Wes Tomlinson

For the Enquirer

After monitoring nurses and technicians in several healthcare facilities that utilize electrocardiogram monitors, students in Hartselle High’s Medical Academy can now practice what they have learned on a new EKG simulator the school received through a grant last month.

“I’m pretty sure it’s an atrial flutter,” said Hartselle High senior Maddox Reeves as he monitored a patient’s heart rate through the simulator, his patient being a mannequin and the heart condition one of 16 simulations students can experience.

Thereare25seniorsinthe medical academy this year who are working toward their national healthcare certification and six students working toward their patient care technician certification, according to Lynne Shelton, an instructor for the academy. She said obtaining the EKG simulator this school year willassistthosestudentson their path to certification.

“The last module of their curriculum to prep for the examisallaboutEKGsand

howtoplaceandacquirean EKG,” Shelton said. “This simulator will simulate a 3-, 4-, 5- and 12-lead EKG, so these students need to learn the difference in all of those.”

Hartselle High received a $5,000 STEM grant from Tennessee Valley Authority in February, and Shelton said that was the first time she applied for the TVA grant.

During one of the simulationrunslastFriday,Reeves and fellow senior Jack Adams identified a conditionknownassupraventricular tachycardia, which is a faster than normal heart rate. Reeves began taking classes in the medical academyintheeighthgradeand Adams began in the ninth grade.

“YoulookattheQRScomplex, which is the highest point (on the EKG wave) and it appears to be regular on here,” Adams said. “But you want to check and see if the rate is at the right speed, so if it’s an irregular heartbeat, you would use the six-second strip. You then count the number of QRS complexes in those six seconds and you multiply by 10.”

By doing this, Adams can

calculate the number of heartbeatsperminute, and inthatinstance, hecounted 188 beats per minute.

“Anything above 180 is considered supraventricular tachycardia,” Adams said. “A normal heart rate is between 60 to 100 beats per minute.”

Reevessaidtakingmedical coursework in the academy each year has inspired him to pursue a career in health and medicine. This year, he has done clinical rotations at Cullman Regional Hospital and Decatur Morgan Hospital as well as shadow physical therapists at ATI Physical Therapy in Decatur.

“I’ve also done some ridealongs with Lifeguard EMS ambulance services in Hartselle,” Reeves said. Adams said he has done clinical rotations at Lifework Physical Therapy in Hartselle and several area pediatrician offices. He said afterobtaininghiscertifications, he plans on getting a part-time job in healthcare this summer.

“I’m going to college at Auburn University for premed, so hopefully I can get a job at a hospital down there this summer,” Adams said.

they are two of 25 seniors who are working to obtain their national healthcare certification this year.

Reeves said he will attend Troy University during the fall where he will major in nursing and desires to become a trauma nurse, working in emergency rooms.

“They’ve got a regional hospital down there, so I’m just doing this so if wanted to work part-time down thereasanEKGtechnician, I could,” Reeves said. “I’ve heard that if you haven’t

experienced medical coursework in high school, you’re going to struggle in college so I feel pretty comfortableaboutgoingtoTroy and being ahead of some students.”

Pets help senior citizens physically, mentally and emotionally

Linda Hale, 83, said she would not still be around if it were not for the furry, four-legged companions she has had as a senior citizen, and an expert said owning a pet helps seniors physically, mentally and emotionally.

“I would recommend this to any senior,” Hale said.

“It just fills an empty spot.

These animals love you unconditionally — and to be greeted at the door.”

Hale, from Hartselle, said her dog helps her fight loneliness.

“It’s given me a reason for living and companionship — and having a live (being) in the house,”

Hale said. “She’s with me constantly.Shesleepswith me; she does everything I do. She’s constantly by my side.”

Hale has owned three Yorkshire terriers since she has been a senior citizen. Currently, 11-year-old female Yorkie Zoey Isabella is her companion. Hale has lived alone since she became a widow in 1994.

“I would recommend to anyone the companion of a dog; their love is unconditional,” she said. “I’ve had her through COVID, I’ve had her through various illnesses. I fell about two years ago, and I’ve been pretty much isolated, and I don’t think I would have survived without my dog.”

“I
t’s given me a reason for living and companionship — and having a live (being) in the house. She’s with me constantly. She sleeps with me; she does everything I do. She’s constantly by my side.”

Licensed professional counselor Kathryn Cox in Decatur said seniors will usually feel safer at home with a pet because they are not alone. She said pets help seniors mentally and emotionally.

“A lot of times, the older we get, the more we’re kind of isolated, and that petcanbeasourceofemotional support. It can be a source of someone to take care of or someone who cares for us,” Cox said. “It alleviates some loneliness and depression. Depression can lead to physical health issues as well.”

Cox said pets can help seniors physically.

“Pets have been known to lower a person’s blood pressure and help your heart rate settle down because of that feeling you get, those endorphins that get released and that feeling that you get from that unconditional love,” she said.

Hale said Zoey helps her physically by making her

get out of the house.

“She’s such an energetic dog,” she said. “She loves outside. I take her out and walk her.”

Cox said seniors can stay more mobile and active by walking their dog.

As Hale gets older, she said, she has thought about whether she will get another dog.

“I probably will not own another dog in truth. If something happens to her, I don’t think I can. I might have to get a cat or something,” she said. “A cat does not demand what dogs do. You give a cat a litter box and feed it. I would be as affectionate with a cat as I am with my dog, but they do not require the attention that my dog does.”

Cox said whether a senior gets a dog or a cat is a matter of both preference as well as needs and abilities.

“Cats are usually more independent than dogs,” she said. “So, you don’t always get that, ‘I want to

be in your lap and love on you all the time’ from a cat, but you also don’t get the, ‘I’ve got to go outside right now, and you need to get up and do it.’”

Cox said before you give a senior a pet, you must make sure the senior is capable of taking care of it or that the senior and the particular animal are a good fit.

“If a senior can’t get up and take their dog out,

then that’s going to be a lot of stress because they have a dog that needs to go out,” she said. “If they have a cat with a litter box, can they clean the box?”

Cox said throughout her workasacounselorshehas seen several success stories with seniors and pets.

“Someone was a senior, empty nest, and even grandchildren growing up, so that’s just less and less interaction,” she said.

“A pet worked out great for them.”

Seniors in living situations other than their own home benefit from pets as well, Cox said.

“People who can’t live independently, there are actually emotional support dog places that bring thedogtotheseniorliving facility,” she said. “Having pets visit even brightens things up and makes people feel a little better.”

Family tradition: State livestock show legacy spans generations

Jeremy Childers’ gaze followed his daughter, Callie Rae,assheledherCommercialDivisionchampionheifer in the final drive of the Jr. Livestock Expo (JLE) Beef ShowinMontgomery.

That last lap around the ring was the culmination of months of work and decades of tradition for the Morgan Countyfarmfamily.

“For 46 years, someone in our family has been exhibiting livestock at this show,” said Kip Childers. He’s Jeremy’s brother and uncle to JLE exhibitors Caden, 18; Callie Rae, 15; and Colt, 12. He’s an integral part of their support system, too, offering encouragement, advice and hands-on help as the family travels the show circuit.

Showing livestock is a worthwhile, albeit time-consuming, family activity, Jeremysaid.

“Most people don’t realize the amount of time and effortittakes.Wehavetobea team,”saidJeremywhilegesturingtoColt,whotag-teams with his siblings to care for theirherd.

That team effort was on display during JLE March 9-16. The Alabama Farmers Federation and Alfa Insurance coordinate the annual JLE, which includes beef, swine and dairy shows and is held in conjunction with the SLE Rodeo. Across all three shows, teams of family, friendsandfitters(experts in grooming animals) filled barnsandthearenaasexhibitors’ yearlong projects came toaclose. Their anticipation built as judges circled the ring selecting top livestock based off qualitieslikestrength, soundness and structure. Other competitions focused on showmanship, or an exhibitor’sabilitytocontrolanimals inthearena.

Clapsandcheerseruptedas winners were chosen. That joy carried over to the photo area manned by professional photographers Reba Hicks and Morgan Graham Flowers. Following commemorative shots with judges and a Federation representative, each exhibitors’ support system crowded around for a finalphoto.

Hicks and Flowers understand the value of camera clicks capturing memories. They’re former exhibitors whose families still treasure snapshotsfromJLE,thestate championship of livestock showing.

The Childers family does, too.Thosephotosarespecial, as are the banners they’ve wonovertheyears.

“Banners, ribbons and trophies line the wall leading to ourson’sroom,”saidJeremy’s wife, April. “Caden’s senior photosusedthosebannerson
