After a competition, McCleskey said it can take uptoaweekforhisbodyto return to normal.
“There’s a lot of ice baths and massages involved,” he said.“Itcantakeafewdays of rest and recuperation to heal.”
The chance to represent his hometown of Hartselle andAlabamaonaninternational platform is a dream come true for the young athlete. McCleskey is preparing to face off against some of the strongest competitors from around the world in Paisley, Scotland Nov. 30. According to the competition’s official website, there are 12 other Americans participating.
In preparation for the World’sStrongestUnder23
Championship, McCleskey has intensified his training regimen under the guidance of experienced coaches and mentors, including Chris Jacheo of Kaos Strength. His workouts consistofstrengthtraining, conditioning and specialized exercises tailored to strongman competitions. Additionally, McCleskey pays close attention to his diet, ensuring that he fuels his body with the nutrients it needs to perform at peak levels during competition. “That’s the hardest part,” McCleskey said. “The training is fun but making sure I get enough protein every day is hard.”
Jacheo said McCleskey’s invitation to Scotland is a good example of the amount of effort he displays when he competes. “I’ve been working with (him) for about two years, and he shows a great deal of potential,” Jacheo said. “The progress he’s made since then and displayed at highly competitive state
competitions absolutely puts him among the world class teen strongman athletes. I have the luxury of picking the athletes I train and I’mveryselective.I’mlooking forward to working with (him) for many years to come, keeping him healthy and ultimately reaching our goal of competing at World’s Strongest Man. I can easily see thathappeninginthenext five years, which is perfect for him as an athlete, as the sport is really starting to grow in popularity.”
McCleskey is currently fundraising for his trip

Azaleas: An Alabama beauty
By Katie Nichols For the Enquirer
Springtime is showtime for azaleas in Alabama landscapes. Bursting with blooms and color, azaleas are the stars of spring.
Lucy Edwards, the Alabama Cooperative Extension System’s coordinator for Chilton County, said azaleas may be the most popular flowering shrubs in Alabama.
Buying plants
For azaleas, gardeners will get the most vibrant display of flowers by buying and planting a mass of a single variety instead of using many varieties and colors. However, purchasing different azalea varieties and colors and planting them together can prolong bloom time.
When buying plants, select ones that are sturdy and have a good branch system. Avoid buying plants with weak, spindling growth. This usually means the plant has a poor root system or that plants were grown too closely together in the nursery.
The best size to buy is 12 to 16 inches tall, because smaller plants are more likely to be injured by cold weather.
Azaleasareusuallybought as container-grown plants. Sometimes the plant can bepot-bound,meaningthe azalea may have a mass of roots growing around the outside of the ball of soil.
“Take the plant out of the container before you buy
it,” Edwards said. “Make sure the roots are healthy and completely fill the pot.
If you notice plants are pot-bound when you take them out of the container, massage the root ball to loosen some of the roots before planting.” Edwards said gardeners can also pull some of the roots at the bottom of the root ball. This will help roots to spread out and grow away from the original ball of container-potting medium.
Planting azaleas Azaleas can be planted any time of the year if people provide adequate water. Most people buy azaleas in the spring, when theplantsareblooming,so they can choose the right color combinations. However, fall is probably the best time to plant, because the plants can become better established before hot weather arrives.
“Carefully consider your planting site for azaleas,” Edwardssaid.“Pickaplace with light-to-moderate shade. Azaleas receiving some shade during the winter usually suffer less cold damage. During hot weather, the flowers last longer on plants in filtered shade. Late-blooming varieties need to be in partial shade to prevent sun scald to the flowers.”
Pine trees with moderate-filtered shade provide the ideal protection for azaleas. However, heavy shade throughout the day may reduce flower production and result in
spindly growth. Evergreen trees or tall shrubs with low branches make good windbreaks and attractive backgrounds for an azalea bush. Shallow-rooted trees — such as oaks, elms and maples — may compete with azaleas for moisture and nutrients. If necessary, create raised beds for the azaleas by adding pine bark or peat moss to improve drainage and lower pH. These beds should be 10 to 12 inches deep. This depth provides an artificial environment likealargecontainer.Additionalwateringisrequired. Avoid building raised beds over tree roots, as it can be stressful and potentially damaging to the tree. Consider soil conditions Gardeners should always consider soil conditions when selecting a planting site. Azaleas require an acidicsoilpH(5.5)togrow well, so you need to check the soil pH of the planned site before buying azaleas. To determine soil pH, submit a soil sample to the Auburn University Soil, Forage and Water Testing Laboratory. More information about soil testing is available on the “Submitting Samples for Soil Testing”webpageatwww.aces. edu.
If test results show a pH above 6.5, you can expect to spend additional money and effort to maintain the proper pH range for plant growth. Because of this, you may want to consider using other types of landscape plants for that site.

“If someone has eclipse glasses, then they should see significant coverage of the sun. However, 10% of the sun’s light is still very bright and very dangerous,” Golben said. “We will experience a dimming of light during the eclipse, but it will not get dark.”
Golben said there will be a minor change in temperature. “At maximum eclipse, there will be less direct energy from the sun,” he said. “But the atmosphere will retain residual heat. So, while the sun dims, there will be a slight chill.”
The entire eclipse will take about 2½ hours, Golben said.
“Locally, the eclipse will begin at 12:43 p.m. on April 8,” he said. “It will reach maximum coverage at 2:02 p.m. The eclipse will finally end at 3:19 p.m.”

optometrist at MyEyeDr., said you should never look directly at the sun, even with sunglasses on, but especially not during the eclipse. He said special glasses are made for viewing the solar eclipse, but even with those you should only stare directly at the eclipse for short intervals.
NASA recommends that an eclipse only be viewed with glasses that meet ISO 12312-2 standards, which it says are “thousands of timesdarker”thanconventional sunglasses. “If you’re outside the range of totality, which we are going to be, well, just like when you try to look up at the sun and it’s very uncomfortable, looking at it for more than a few seconds can actually cause some permanent damage to our central vision,” Teichmiller said. Staring at the sun during the eclipse, Teichmiller said, can cause solar retinopathy, also known as eclipse retinopathy.
“Basically, itcausesaburn to the center part of our vision,” he said. “It can result in permanent vision

Teichmiller said another way to look at the eclipse is through a pinhole effect.
“You can punch tiny holes through a piece of paper,” hesaid.“Youholditupand you look at the shadows it creates on the ground. You can adjust it and see the effects of the eclipse that way.”
Golben said from Texas all the way to Niagara Falls, New York, will have a total eclipse. “Probably the closest destination for someone from north Alabama will be Paducah, Kentucky,” he said. “That is about a 4½ hour drive, assuming good traffic conditions.”
Among the cities from which a total solar eclipse will be visible are Dallas, Little Rock, Arkansas, Indianapolis, Cleveland and Buffalo, New York.
Golben said solar eclipses typically happen somewhere on the Earth’s surface every few years.
“Ithastodowithhowthe
Do you constantly find your dog digging holes whenever they get the chance? Some breeds, particularly terriers and some hounds, are more inclined to this behavior because it is in their genes. sun’s position, the moon’s position at new phase, and the Earth’s position line up,” he said. Solar eclipses do not occur at regular intervals, Golben said. “It varies on the probability of the moon crossing the plane at just the right time,” he said. “Of course we had a total solar eclipse just seven years ago. However, the next one after this will not occur for another 20 years.”
TheNationalSolarObservatoryrecommendsfollowing these safety procedures when viewing the eclipse:
• Always inspect eclipse glasses before use; if scratched or damaged, discard them. Always supervise children using eclipse filters.
• Stand still and cover your eyes with your eclipse glassesbeforelookingupat the sun. After glancing at the sun, turn away before removing your glasses — do not remove them while looking at the sun.
• Do not look at the uneclipsedorpartiallyeclipsed sun through an unfiltered camera, telescope, binocu-

• Mental and physical stimulation: It is important to provide your dog with mental stimulation through daily play and training sessions. Try teaching your dog basic commands to keep their mind busy. Be sure to also provide plenty of physical exercise to release their energy.
• Stay cool: During the warmer months, dogs often dig to expose the cool earth and lie down to lower their body temperature. Keep your dog cool as often as possible during

• Designate an area: If you have a breed that naturally digs, it is a good idea to create a designated space for them to embrace their natural instincts. Try doing this by building a digging pit or sandbox. You can even try burying bones or your dog’s favoritetoystheretoteachthem that this is the acceptable placetodig.

• If you are within the path of totality, remove your eclipse glasses only when the moon completely covers the sun’s bright face and it suddenly gets quite dark. As soon as the bright sun begins to reappear, replace your eclipse glasses to glance at the remaining partial phases.
