AFalkvillemotherofthree whomadeallegationsof abuseagainstherhusband amidamessydivorcewas arrested—twodaysafter sheallegedlyflippedoffa schoolteacherinfrontof children—inlateMarch afterauthoritiessaidshe andherchildrenfaileddrug screens.

KaylaLaurenDudley,29, waschargedwiththree countsofchemicalendangermentofachildand bookedintoMorganCountyJailonMarch28before beingreleasedona$7,500 bond,accordingtotheMorganCountySheriff’sOffice. Dudleyhasonedaughter withamanshemarriedlast JunenamedGregCrittendonandadaughteranda sonfromapreviousmarriage.Shesaidtheoldest, her6-year-oldboy,isnonverbaland“wasbornwitha lotofbirthdefects.”

Adivorcecomplaintsigned byCrittendononJan.4and filedinMorganCounty CircuitCourtindicateshe’s seekingadivorceonthe groundsofinfidelity. DudleyonTuesdaysaidthe divorcewasheridea.She claimedshearrivedhomein lateDecemberafterworkinga12-hourshifttofind thatherson’sdiaperhadn’t beenchanged.

FourdaysafterCrittendon’sdivorcefiling,deputies weredispatchedtotakea reportfromDudley.Accordingtoaninvestigator’saffidavit,Dudleywastoldby oneofherdaughtersthat shewitnessedCrittendon chokingDudley’sson.

“Dudleystatedthatshe reportedtheincidentto DHR,andacasehadbeen openedforchildabuse,” theaffidavitreads.“DuringDHR’sinvestigation,all individualsunderwentdrug screens.Crittendon’sdrug screenwasnegative.Dudley’sdrugscreenonFeb.6 waspositiveformarijuana.” AllthreeofDudley’schildrenalsotestedpositivefor marijuana,accordingtothe affidavit,withoneshowing additionalpositiveresults foramphetaminesand meth. “Ididn’tunderstandhow thatcouldhappen,”Dudley saidTuesday. Dudley’sfriendandformer MCSOstaffmember,Eric Milam,saidhewaspresentwhenDudleywasinterviewedbyinvestigatorsand doesn’trecallheradmitting tosmokinginfrontofher children.

$7M construction bid approved for Cotaco event center

The Morgan County Commission April 9 approved a $7 million bid for construction of an event center in Cotaco, and officials hope to begin moving dirt within a month and possibly have the center open in 18 months. The 34,627-square-foot event center will be located at Luker Road and Union Hill Road, across the street from the District 4 tool shed in Cotaco, which is in eastern Morgan County. Greg Abercrombie, Morgan County District 4 commissioner, said that about 20 months ago, the county used 3M Co. settlement money to purchase 24 acres for about $180,000 for the event center.

Morgan County Commission Chairman Ray Long said the center is a big deal for Morgan County. He said it is not just for District 4, but will be used by the whole county.

“We’ll have two gymnasiums in it, a huge walking track upstairs. There’ll be a room for people to rent for birthday parties, anniversaries, or whatever they want to use it for,” he said. “That’s why we call it an event center instead of a gym.”

The two gymnasium floors, which will have bleachers, will be 10,360-square-feet each. The multipurpose room will be 1,102 square feet.

“Each gym would be able to be changed into two volleyball courts, or some pickleball courts,” Abercrombie said. “We’re going to rent the event center out for hosting tournaments or travel ball, anything like that.” Abercrombie said they also want people in the community to utilize the center. “Mainly, we want our young kids that are playing basketball at these community leagues, Lacey’s Spring, Union Hill, Cotaco, we want them to use this facility,” he said. “That’s one of our main things is for them to come use this and that be their home.”

The commission paid the architectural firm Goodwyn Mills Cawood $40,950 to design the center, and Long said the firm, along with the county engineer, will oversee the project. Ten contractors bid on the project with Limestone Building Group having the lowest bid of about $7.16 million. In last week’s commission meeting, the commission unanimously approved the lowest bid.

Long had originally said that he estimated the center would cost between $5 million and $6 million.

“I’m always real cautious about saying what I think it might be, because I don’t want to encourage (the contractors) to run the price up,” he said. “We knew it was going to be more than $4 million or $5 million; everything’s gone up since COVID. We’ve built some buildings since then, and all those bids were a lot higher than it would have been three years ago.”

Long said the good thing is that they have the funds to pay for it without borrowing any money. He said the county will spend about $2 million from the 3M settlement money, at least $2 million from American Rescue Plan Act funds, some from the Coronavirus Aid, Relief, and Economic Security Act funds, and the rest will be from capital improvement funds that the county receives from the state every May.

“We’ve got a two-fold thing here. First of all, it’s the building imprint that’s got to be removed and brought back, then we’ve got the parking area, it has to be removed and brought back,” he said. “Once we get the building dirt back into place, that’s when we, the county, will turn it over to the contractor and then they will take it from that point and go with it.”

Long said having the District 4 crew doing the dirt work will save the county between $800,000 and $1 million.

“We’re proud to finally go out to bid and have the design and get it back,” Long said. “We’re hoping in the next few weeks we’ll have a groundbreaking out there.”

Abercrombie said he would love to have the facility ready to open, or close to it, in 18 months.

“That’s a goal and a hope,” he said.

Brewer FFA team places high in state competition, headed to nationals

Childers and her livestock team will compete in the national FFA competition in Indianapolis in October after winning top awards in the North District FFA Livestock Contest and the Alabama State FFA Livestock Contest in Montgomery. “It’s really a sacrifice to get to the level they are at,”

A jury trial that began two weeks ago for a pair of Hartselle brothers accused of killing Charles Hill outside a Hartselle gymnasium in 2021 leaves them facing different futures after one was found guilty and the other, who spoke out Monday, was acquitted. “I mean, it makes me feel badbecausehejumpedinto the middle of something that was my problem and ended up getting convicted onit,”RathelAmosLindley, 45, said of his brother. “I’m goingtodowhatIcantotry and get him out of it somehow or another, if I can.” Billy Joe Lindley, 52, was found guilty of Hill’s murder and remained in MorganCountyJailonMonday. He is scheduled to be sentenced June 27. Hartselle police arrested Billy Lindley on Nov. 17, 2021, after they responded to Hartselle Gymnastics to find Hill dead from stab wounds to his torso. Six members of the livestock team competed in Montgomery, and Glasscock said four out of those six earned awards in the four categories of livestock: swine,beef,sheepandgoats.

Both at the state and national competitions, students are given 12 minutes to judge and make observations about livestock, followedbyatwo-minute“reasoning” speech on why they judged the way they did.

Childers said countless hours of practice leading up to the state competition made the difference in winning. “We had multiple coaches and mentors who came in, and that helped because

“What happened was so intertwined that, if you tried one and then tried the otheronelater,you’djustbe going over the same thing twice,” Iverson, who’s been practicing law for eight years, explained. Rathel Lindley was his first murder case.

Before the trial began, the defense attorneys argued for the inclusion of evidence that showed ongoing bad blood between Hill and the Lindleys. Howell ruledthatfactsshowingdifficulty between the parties were admissible but specific

She said one of the biggest obstacles for the team was getting everyone to commit to coming to every practice, even though most of them have busy schedules.

“We had to come together and realize how big this competition was a priority for us,” Childers said. “If it was a big priority, then we had to sacrifice. If we all wanted to achieve this goal of winning state, we knew we had to sacrifice some things to get there.”

Before Hill’s death, Hartselle police had responded to the Lindley residence in August 2020 to investigate a shooting. According to investigators at the time, Hill went to the home and threatened Rathel Lindley with a handgun. In response, Rathel Lindley retrieved a shotgun from a bedroom,andthementhen exchanged gunfire outside, police said. Hill was struck once in the upper leg and transported to Huntsville Hospital with non-lifethreatening injuries.

“I guess it’s because of that girlfriend he was with,” Rathel Lindley said Monday. “There were a couple of nights he beat the hell out of her, and I had to get up and go get her at 3 a.m. in the morning and take

Blackwood has been judging livestock for three years now and said she learned the meaning of sacrifice in preparing for the state competition.

“Coming every day after school is hard because we all have extracurricular activities that we’re involved in,” Blackwood said. “I’m a junior, so I’m taking col-

Rathel Lindley said Hill had been harassing him for threeorfouryearsbeforehe was killed.

“I mean, hell, I couldn’t even go to a gas station and get gas. If this man seen us, he come over there harassing me at the gas station.”

On the night Hill died, Rathel Lindley said Hill came to their home and swung a beer bottle at Billy Lindley. Lewis, in his opening argument, didn’t dispute that Hill showed up to theLindleyresidencedrunk and belligerent and trying to pick a fight. In response, Billy Lindley stabbed Hill with a knife, according to Lewis.

“There was definitely some history between the parties,” Iverson said. “It was an interesting kind of charge for Rathel. He was there and he was somewhat

Despite participating in several school sports, Childers said none of those teams offer the practicality and teamwork that comes with being a part of FFA.

“All sports teams I’ve been involved with, I don’t think I’vedevelopedstrongerrelationships than what I have with FFA,” Childers said.

“With sports teams you’re just practicing and playing a game, but with this, we spend a lot more time practicing and getting to know each other. It’s almost like a little family.”

The jury deliberated for aroundtwohoursonMarch 22 before returning verdicts, according to Iverson. Hesaidthetrialwasunique for having more than one defendant and different lawyers.

“I was very thankful that we did try it together, because Tom DiGiulian has tried a bunch of (murder cases) and it was helpful to have somebody there,” he said. Rathel Lindley said his brother plans on appealing the conviction.

“It was bull**** the way we was done,” he said. “I sat in jail for over a year for something I didn’t even do. It’s not right, in my book.”

Hartselle’s Williamson having standout year

next year, Hartselle’s JoJo Williamson will be playing baseball for the University of Alabama. Normally, being signed to an SEC school would guarantee you’re the top dog on whatever high school you play for. That is, unless of courseyouplayatHartselle. Hartselle is one of the top baseball programs in the state, having won nine state championships since 1990. Along the way the Tigers haveproducedplentyofstar players.However,therunof talent the school has seen recently might be the best the program has ever seen.

In the last four years, Hartselle has had nine players sign Division I scholarships. With that much talent, it can be hard to separate yourself from the pack. This season, Williamson is doing just that.

So far this year Williamson leads the team with a .418 batting average. He’s hitateamhigh41RBIs,five home runs and is batting .458withrunnersinscoring

“I would say things have beengoingmywaythisyear, maybealittlebitbetterthan usual,” Williamson said. Being an SEC baseball signee, it seems wrong to say that Williamson has been overlooked at times, but that’s never been the case for his team.

“There’s probably been people outside the program that have overlooked him, but we never have,” Hartselle coach Jake Miles

said. “I wish we could pull back the curtain and let people see behinds the scenes all the work he puts in, not just for himself, but to help the team.”

There’s no denying that Williamson is having the

offense with four hits and an RBI, while Cade Miles had a hit and an RBI. Hartselle’s 11 seniors played the final regular season game on Saturday. They have been involved in many big wins at Hartselle. “A lot of these guys have played some significant innings over the last few years, and hopefully, they left an impact on the program both on and off the field that Coach Booth would be proud of,” Miles said. “These 11 seniors

best season of his career so far though. After fellow Alabama signee Peyton Steele slowly worked his way back from a football injury, Williamson took the reigns and never looked back.

“It feels like every time he steps to the plate he’s going to come through,” Miles said. “I know that’s unrealistic, but that’s just the type of year he’s having.”

While some players may like the spotlight always on them, Williamson said a big reason he’s having a good a year as he is has been because he’s shared the field with so many talented players. “Everyday it’s a challenge. Every guy expects more from you each day,” Williamson said. “I couldn’t have asked to for a better situation than I’ve had.” Williamson said it was the reason he came to Hartselle in eighth grade. “Hartselle is great at baseball,” Williamson said. “I can’t say I expected to play with as many Division I guys as I have, but it’s not surprising. This is just a great place to be.”

You always say, ‘Leave it better than you found it,’ and our baseball program is a little better because of how these seniors are leaving it.”

Hartselle cheerleaders qualify for world competition

Tori Kay, left, and Lydia Smith of Hartselle have qualified for the Cheerleading Worlds in Orlando, Fla. later this month. They will be competing with Ace Cheer Company of Huntsville. They compete with their team The Lady Birds April 25-29.

This is Kay’s third year to qualify for World’s. Kay is the daughter of Terry and Tonja Kay and granddaughter of Jeff and Nancy Tanner. Lydia is the daughter of Lacey and Jason Cagle.

Williamson has started every year since he was a freshman. In that span he’s been a part of a state runner-up team (2021), a state championship team (2022) and a state quarterfinals team (2023). He hopes to be a part of Hartselle’s 10th championship team. “We’re always looking for a blue map here, but I feel like now more than ever, it’s something we really want to achieve,” Williamson said. “There’s been a lot of great players, a lot of great senior classes, come through here and we feel like ours is up there with the best. This is our chance to go prove it.”

Priceville, Danville girls’ soccer pick up wins in rain-shortened week

The Priceville Lady Bulldogs improved to 12-2 with an 11-1 win over New Hope. They scored seven first-half goals and cruised to victory. Anna Katherine Hopkins netted six goals to lead Priceville. Lillyan Bloodworth and Aubrey Owens each added two goals, while Mae Vick added one goal on a penalty kick. Tori Staats had two saves in goal. Tigers roar in Athens soccer win

April 4, the Hartselle boys soccer teams completed a nine-game stretch of away contests by traveling to Athens. The varsity team defeated the Golden Eagles 3-0, while the JV game ended in a tie, 1-1. The middle school boys team closed out their season with an impressive 10-3-1 record.

Varsity boys Hartselle 3, Athens 0 Luke Minnon put the Tigers on the scoreboard with an assist from Jamison Hill to take a 1-0 lead over the Eagles with 17:30 on the first half clock.

Five minutes later, Owen Bennich scored the first of his two goals with Gavin Erb’s first assist of the season to take a 2-0 lead into halftime.

Five minutes into the second half saw Bennich get his brace with an assist from Ethan Medendorp. The remainder of the half was characterized by furious offense by the Tigers and inspired defense by Athens with no further scoring.

“Garyhadbeencoachingin Huntsvilleforseveralyears andwantedtocomehome toHartselle,”Hartselle’s GlennThompsonsaid.“It wasagreatmoveforGary andHartsellebecausehe’s meantsomuchtotheschool, theathleticprogramandour community.” OrrstartedschoolatMorganCountyTraining.When integrationledtothedecisiontoclosetheschoolfor Blacksin1969,Orrand someofhisfriendsdecided togoaheadandtransferto MorganCountyHighinthe fallof1968.

“Therewerenoissuesin makingthemove,”Orrsaid. “Weallkneweachother.It wasnobigdeal.Mycousin CharlesOrrwasthefirst Blacktoplaysportsfor Hartselle.”

Twoyearslater,Orrhadthe opportunitytomakeanathleticimpactasaHartselle Tiger.Hewasexpectedtobe akeyplayercomingoffthe benchonthe1970-71basketballteam.

ThestarplayerforHartselle wasthe6-foot-6Charles “Boonie”Russell.Hewas consideredoneofthetop playersinthestate. Orr’srolechangedearlyin theseasonwhentwoteammateswentdownwithinjuries.Hisplayingtimegrew untilheeventuallybecame astarter.

andCotaco,68-59,inthe finals.Afteraregularseason losstoAthens,64-59,onFeb. 5,Hartsellewouldwinits nextsevengamesandbring homethestatechampionshiptrophy. “Afterwinningourarea tournament,wehadto playAustinfortheregional championshipinFairview,” Orrsaid.“Wewon(55-51). Thatwasthefourthtimewe beatAustinthatseason.I don’tthinkanybodyhasever beatAustinfourtimesinone basketballseason.”

ThestatetournamentformatinTuscaloosahadeight teamsshowinguptosee whocouldwinthreestraight tobecomestatechampion. Hartselleopenedwithwins overUMSWrightfrom Mobile,80-28,andUnion Springs,72-60.Thatsetup thechampionshipgamewith ColbertCounty. Thefinalsfeaturedabattle ofthebigmenwithRussellgoingagainstColbert County’s6-foot-9junior LeonDouglas.Thetwo wouldlaterbeteammatesat Alabama.Douglaswonthe scoringbattlethatnightwith 35pointsto23forRussell. Orrscoredaseason-high20 points.

“Booniehadagreatgame andtookcareoftheinside,” Orrsaid.“Therestofustook careoftheoutside.Coach Smallwood’sgameplan openeduptheoutsideforus tohitsomeshotsandwedid. Plusweplayedsomereally gooddefense.” RussellreceivedtournamentMVPhonors.Inthe threegames,hescored86 pointsandhad49rebounds. Orrscored46points.Hehit 18of30fieldgoalsandwas 10of10fromthefreethrow line.

UnfortunatelyforOrrand histeammatesthechampionshipsuccessdidnotcarry overforthenexttwoseasons. Bothseasonsendedwith lossesinareatournament championshipgames. Orrfinishedhiscareerwith 816points.That’sfifthbest atHartsellebehindBrody Peebles(3,049),Russell (1,189),DwainKeel(1,128) andCharlesJarrett(903).

TheplayingcareerforOrr continuedatCalhounCommunityCollegeinbothbasketballandbaseball.His coachingcareerstartedon theyouthlevel.

“Myfirstcoachingjobwas agirlssoftballteamone summer,”Orrsaid.“Ialso coachedalotofrecbasketball.LarrySlaterwasthe recreationdirectorandI learnedalotfromjustbeing aroundhim.”

AftergettinghisteachingdegreeatAthensState, OrrlandedatJohnsonin 1983.Inhisfirstseason,he coachedtheboysfreshmen basketballteamtoa21-0 record.Thosefreshmenwere seniorsonJohnson’sstate championshipteam.

In1999,Orrwasbackat Hartsellehelpinginavariety ofrolesfordifferentsports. Twoofhisfavoritememorieswerethe2011football statechampionshipandthe girlsgolfstatechampionship streak.

“Thefootballstatechampionshipwashugebecausewe hadbeenknockingonthe doorforsolong,”Orrsaid. “BobGodseyfinallygotus throughthedoor. “Thegolfwasfunbecause itwasagreatgroupofkids. Thefirstonewasreallyspecialbecausetheoldestgirl wasaninthgraderandthe youngestwasintheseventh grade.Thosegirlshadagreat workethic.”

Orr’s14yearsasgirlsbasketballcoachsawtheprogrambecomeoneofthebest inthestate.Histeamshad five20-pluswinseasonsin hislastsevenyears.

InFebruary2017,HartsellegirlsbasketballheadcoachGaryOrrtalkstotheteamduringagameagainstFlorence.

“CoachingagainstGarywas alwaysahoot,”formerBrewercoachRickyAllensaid. “Hewasadefensivewizard andwouldaggravateyouto deathwithsomethingnew everygame.Ilovedcompetingagainsthisteams.”

TwoofOrr’stopplayers wereMoriahTaylorand MasynMarchbanks.They bothscoredover2,000points intheircareers.Taylorwasa four-timeAll-Stateselection. MarchbankswasathreetimeAll-Stateselection.

“CoachOrrwassosuccessfulnotbecauseheknew theX’sandO’softhegame, butbecausehetooktimeto developarelationshipwith eachofhisplayers,”Taylor said.“Hedevelopedusonthe courtaswellasoffthecourt.” Taylorplayedincollegeat GeorgiaStateandWestFloridaandhopestoplayproball overseas.

“CoachOrrisalwaysstrivingforwaystobebetter,” Marchbankssaid.“He’sthe mosthumblepersonand coachI’veeverbeenaround. Ilovedplayingforhim.”

Marchbanksjustfinished hersecondseasonatSamford.

JustbecauseOrristechnicallyretireddoesn’tmean heisfinishedcoachingat Hartselle.Lastfallhewas avolunteerassistantfootball coach. “Sportsisinmybloodline, andIenjoyitsomuchthat Idon’tknowifIeverwill completelywalkawayfrom it,”Orrsaid.
