After13years underground,the cicadasarehere

Millionsoflocalcicadas haveemergedfroma13-year undergroundhibernation, andfarmersareconcerned abouttheimpactthecreaturescouldhaveontheirfruit trees.
Alabamahasover20species ofannualcicadasthatappear everysummer,butthisyear thestatewillexperiencethe emergenceofperiodicBrood 19cicadas.
MorganCountyRegionalExtensionAgentJayne LuetzowsaidBrood19have hatchedinAlabamaandresidentsshouldexpectmillions ofthebugs.
Luetzowsaidthelasttime Alabamaexperiencedthe emergenceofacicadabrood wasin2011,whenthisyear’s Brood19cicadashatchedand burrowedunderground.They willbehereupuntilmid-May.
MeredithSchrader,anentomologistwiththeextension agency,saidBrood19cicadas haveredeyes,darkbodiesand clearwingswithorangeveins andarethree-quartersofan inchlong,smallerthanmost annualspeciesofcicadasthat
Alabamaseeseachyear. They’realsoloud.Theircollectivesongscanbeasloudas jetenginesandscientistswho studythemoftenwearearmuffstoprotecttheirhearing, accordingtoTheAssociated Press.
Schradersaidthebrood, highinprotein,isharmless andthereshouldbenoconcernifhouseholdpetsoreven childrenconsumethem.
Indeed,theyareincludedin somecuisine.AudubonInsectariuminNewOrleansserves agreensaladwithapple, almonds,blueberryvinaigrette—androastedcicadas.
Luetzowsaidcicadasdonot flymorethan50metersfrom wheretheyemergedandso theywillnottravelacrossthe state.
“SothecicadasinMorgan County,you’renotgoingto seetheminLawrenceCounty becausetheycannotflythat far,”Luetzowsaid.
Luetzowsaidthecicada’s purposeforemergingisto mateandlaytheireggsinto youngtrees,withtheirpreferredbirthingplacebeing fruittrees.

Appletonoftenchecksoutbooks toreadandsaysshecleansher housetothetuneofthelibrary’s audiobooks. Withlimitedspaceandrepairstoo costlyatitscurrentlocation,the planned$2.5millionlibrarywill hopefullymeetthecity’sneedswell intothefuture,saidMichelleBlaylock,librarymanager.
Builtinthe1960sasabank,the currentlibraryonSparkmanStreet cannotberenovatedtomakeitlarger,officialssaid.
“Itneedsrepairsandupdatesthat arenotfeasibleconsideringwehave
outgrownthespace,”Blaylocksaid. “Weareextremelylimitedinmost ofourspacesfornewmaterials,programming,patronseating,displays, storage,maintenanceandwork areasforemployees.”
Thecurrentlibraryhas4,042 squarefeetofusablespace,shesaid, excludingthemaintenanceroom andstorageareas.Thenewlibrary, whichwillbeat413SparkmanSt. N.W.,willhave7,500squarefeet —almostdoublewhatithasnow —andwillbelocatedlessthana quarterofamilefromthecurrent location. Astheywereseated,andbegan discussingthemenu,Iwondered whattheoccasioncouldbe.They werenotcarryinganygayly wrappedpackagessothatruled outabirthdayparty.Without promptingtheyhadseatedthemselvesinorderofagenexttothe motherfromtheyoungesttothe oldestasifthiswereapermanent
arrangementsotheoldestdaughtercouldassistwithheryounger sisters.
Thinkinguponthesethings aswedroveaway,amomentof inspirationconvincedmethis wasahomeschoolgroupcelebratingtheendofanotherterm. Theirmotherwastheirteacherandtheirsiblingsweretheir classmates.AfewdayslaterI knewIhadbeenrightwhenI spokebrieflytoseveralmothers andchildrenofhomeschoolers whohadcometogetherasthe endofthesemesterdrewnear.
Therearesomefamilieswho forvariousreasonschoosehomeschoolingoverpubliceducation. Forsome,thisisasatisfactory arrangementwhileothersdonot finditsatisfying.Atanyrate, itchangestheactivitiesofan entirefamilyandplacesagreat responsibilityuponthedesignatedteachertoensurethechil-
torismorethanjustatitle;it’s acornerstoneofouroperation. WithKatieatthehelm,wecanbe confidentthateverypersonwho crossesourthresholdordialsour numberwillreceivethecareand attentiontheydeserve. StudentsatBarkleyBridge ElementarySchoolrecently collectedmorethan350 poundsofpoptabsthatwill benefitfamilieswhovisitthe RonaldMcDonaldHouse. Intotal,studentscollected 377.08poundsoftabsthat willbedonatedtothenonprofitorganizationinBirmingham. BarkleyBridgestudents collected365poundsof poptabsin2020and462 poundsin2021,thetopelementaryschoolinthecompetitionbothyears.Donationsarestillbeingaccepted attheschool–studentscollectthetabsyear-roundand turnthemineveryspring. ThenonprofitRonald McDonaldHousecares forupto73guestfamilies everynight,keepingthem
on3.5acresofdonatedland wheretheformerHartselle MedicalCenteroncestood, MayorRandyGarrisonsaid.
Itwasusedasamedicalcenterfor60yearsuntilitclosed in2012andwasdemolished in2021.HuntsvilleHospital HealthSystemdonatedthe land,valuedat$110,000,to thecity,officialssaid.
ThecitycouncilchoseLeonardDesignstodesignthenew library.Thefirmwaspreviouslyinvolvedinremodeling themunicipalbuilding,and theincomingcitybuildings, includingthelibrary,event centerandfirestation,will alignaestheticallywithit,officialssaid.Thecitywilluse theproceedsfromthesale ofmunicipalbondsissuedin 2022topayforthethreenew buildings,Garrisonsaid. Self-checkout Oneofthebestnewfeatures inthenewlibrarywillhelp bothpatronsandlibrarystaff,
shrubsthatareverygummy, sothey’renotgoingtoattack pinetrees,”Luetzowsaid. “Fruittreeslikeappletrees havenew,youngfoliageand branches.Thefemalecicada willinserthereggintothe branches,sotheywon’teaton thefoliage.Afterthat,she’ll flyoff.”
Aftercicadasimplanttheir eggsintotreebranches,the youngcicadaswillhatchand burrowintothenearbysoil untiltheyarematureenough toemerge.
FarmerWesIsomsaidhe rememberstheBrood19cicadasfrom2011andnoticed theyweremoreabundantin TennesseethaninAlabama. HeownsIsom’sOrchardin Athenswherehegrowsapple andpeachtreeson80acres.
“Theycanbealittlebitofa problem,”Isomsaid.“Thelast hatchingwehad,Ididnotice thefartheryouwentinto Tennessee,thethickerthey were.Wedidn’tseetoomany problemsonpeachtrees,but
togetherwhiletheirchildren receivemedicaltreatmentat nearbyhospitals. AccordingtotheRMH website,inadditionto providingacomfortable bedroom,familiesaresurroundedwithloveandsupportfromvolunteers,staff andotherguestfamilies whosharethesamehopes andfears.Home-cooked meals,activities,indoorand outdoorplayareas,laundry facilities,computers,WiFi, andmuchmorearealso providedsothatguestscan concentrateonwhatismost important—family. Ittakes$125pernightper familytooperatetheRonald McDonaldHouse.However, familiesarenotrequiredto payaroomfeeandnofamilyiseverturnedawayfor theirinabilitytomakethe minimaldonation.

“Weareconvertingtoa RadioFrequencyIdentification(RFID)system,which willallowpatronstocheckout materialsthemselves,”Blaylocksaid.“Theydon’thaveto waitforstafftobefree.Weget verybusyinthesummer,so theywouldnothavetowait forstaffandtherewouldbe nowaitline.”
StaffwillusetheRFID systemtoquicklycheckin returnedbooksandtolocate misshelvedbooksandget thembackintherightplace, Blaylocksaid.Thesystem worksbecauseeachbookis taggedwithareadablemicrochipthatcontainspertinent informationaboutthebook. Inalibrary,Blaylocksaid,a misshelvedbook“isasgood aslost.”
“Wecouldwalkdownthe aislesandscanthebooksto seeifanyweremisshelved,” shesaid.
Thelibrary’sexistingcollectionincludes32,975books, includingaudiobooks, 994DVDsand20STEM/
theycouldposeaproblem withappletrees.Thecicadas donotdisruptthevascular systemonthetree,butthe newtissuelaidbythecicadas couldsetitbackandstuntits growth.”
Isomsaidwhilehisapple treessufferedminimaldamagein2011,hisfarmerfriends inMadisonCountywerenot solucky.
“Weknowafamilywho farmsinMadisonCounty, Scott’sOrchard,andthey straddletheAlabamaand Tennesseeline,”Isomsaid. “Youcouldseemoredamage intheiryoungappletrees. Theiroldappletrees,itdidn’t seemtoaffectthemasmuch aswiththeyoungtrees.”
Luetzowsaidfarmerswill usuallysprayinsecticide aroundtheirtreestokeep cicadasout,butIsomsaidhe willnotsprayunlessswarms ofthemtargethistrees.
“Unlesstheygetrealbad,we won’ttrytosprayforthem,” Isomsaid.“Itwouldn’tbe feasibletotreattheground beforetheyemergebecause theyhavequitfeedinganywayandtotrytoputa

“TheRFIDsystemwould helpwithinventory,”Blaylock said.“Itwillgomuchquicker becausewedon’thavetoscan eachindividualbarcode.”
Currentlythebarcodesthat holdinformationabouteach bookarelocatedoutsidesome booksandinsideothers, whichmakestheinventory processmoredifficult.
“Todoinventory,wehaveto pulleachbookofftheshelf, openit,lookatitandputit back,”Blaylocksaid.“When weconvert,wewilltageach bookandtheinformationwill bethere.Wecanjustscan thebooksbywalkingbyeach one.”
Thenewlibrarywilloffer largerdedicatedspacesfor children,teensandadults.
Currently,thesummerreadingprogramforkidsrequires stuffing100people,including about70kidsand30parents,intoalargeroominthe library,saidchildren’slibrarianSarahLaughmiller.The fitistightandusuallyleaves peoplesittingontheflooror spillingoverintotheaisles. “I’mlookingformorespace togrow,”Laughmillersaid. HartselleresidentPhyllis Bradfordexpectsmorelibrary spacewillmeanmorespace fornewmaterialsplusmore spacetoexpandlibraryprogramsforkidsandothers.
“Thesegirlsaretop-notch,” shesaidoflibrarystaff.“Icannotimaginewhattheycould doiftheyhadmorespace.”
Theretiredkindergarten teacherwhotaughtatBarkleyBridgeElementarySchool saidshelovescomingtothe libraryandsheespeciallylikes readingfromitstruecrime andmysteryselections.
“I’maformerteacher,so
soil-basedinsecticide,you wouldn’tgetmuchbenefit outofit.They’reinthesurroundingwoodlandtoo,so youcan’tgetridofthem.”
MoultonfarmerLarry LouAllensaidheisalsowaitingtosprayinsecticideonhis peachtreesuntilheseesthe impactofthecicadabrood.
“It’sawait-and-seesituation,we’lljustdealwithit asitcomes,”LouAllensaid. “We’regoingtowaitand seewhatthedamageisand ifwe’llevenhavedamage. We’vehadcicadasbeforebut nottotheextentofwherewe hadtocontrolthem.”
Howeverproblematicthe cicadaonslaughtwillbe
locally,itcouldbeworse.
OtherpartsoftheUnited Stateswillexperiencethe rarephenomenonoftwo cicadabroodsappearing simultaneouslythisspring. Brood13cicadaswill emergeinthenorthernand midwesternstates,overlappinginsomeareas.
“Brood13isgoingtobe moretowardIllinois,particularlysouthernIllinois, andBrood19wewilljust seehereinAlabama,”Luetzowsaid.“Wheretheywill overlapwillactuallybein theMidwest.”
Thelasttimethebroods overlappedwasover200 yearsago.
Iaminterestedinbooksof allkinds.Ilikenonfiction. I’minterestedtoseehowthe worldworks,”shesaid.“Ifa subjectinterestsme,Ipick itup.”
Withtheadditionalspacein thenewlibrary,librarystaff willbeabletoincreasethe numberofmaterialsavailable forcheckout,Blaylocksaid. Includedinthe7,500square feetwillbededicatedprogrammingspaceforpatrons ofallages.
“Thisspacewillallowusto provideprogramsforadult andseniorssuchascrafting, job-skillclassesandspecial speakers,”Blaylocksaid.
Forchildren,thelibraryis planningprogramssuchas LEGOClubandmakerspace (acollaborativeworkspace thatteachescriticalthinking), STEM/STEAMprograms andpassiveprogramming.
“Duetocurrentspacelimitations,wehavefoundit difficulttoprovideteenprograms,”Blaylocksaid.“However,withthenewlibraryitis oneofourgoals.”
Thechildren’sareawillfeaturechild-sizedfurniture, easyaccesstobooksandkits, andhands-onactivitiesthat canbechangedperiodically, Blaylocksaid.Theteenarea willfeaturecomfortableseating,accesstochargingports fordevices,andspacetomeet andcollaborateforschool projectsorcomputerprogramming.
“Itcangetnoisy,andwe don’thaveaseparateareato dothat,”Blaylocksaid.
Overall,thenewlibraryis aboutplanningforthefuture.
“Ourgoalisnottojustlook atwhatweneedtoday,butto havealibrarythatwillmeet thefutureneedsofourcommunityandthesurrounding areaforyearstocome,”Blaylocksaid.
ForAppleton,thatmeans more“goodmedicine.”
“Whenwegetabigger library,therewillbemore optionsforpatrons—more books,moreDVDs,more booksontape,moreeverything.” arealsoNationalMerit Scholarshipfinalists. PorterKustascored30as afreshman.Kusta,15,said heplansontakingthetest againuntilhecanscore34 orhigher.
“SinceItookitthisfirst timetogetabaseline,my studyingwasn’tincrediblyextensive,”Kustasaid. “Ithinkwhatmighthave preparedmethemostwas takinganEnglishpractice testbeforeandreviewing whateverImissed.”
Kustasaidhisadvicefor otherstudentsistotakethe testearlyinhighschool.

PRICEVILLE—Whenthe
cityofPricevillelaunched itsfirstconcertinthepark 10yearsago,turnoutfor thefreeeventwasnotwhat officialshadhopedfor,so theydidn’trepeattheevent. Perhapstheevent’stime hadnotyetcomeorperhapsitwasthewrongmusic forthecrowd.Whateverthe case,officialsbelievethey havetherightmixthistime aroundastheytryagain.
ConcertintheParkwillbe from2to9p.m.May11at VeteransParkoffAlabama 67SouthinPriceville.
“We’reexcitedtobeapart ofthisandhopefullywatch itgrow,”saidCityClerk ShannonWeissend.
Musicalheadlinerswillbe vocalistLoriNevilleand guitaristDavidHigginbotham,thecityclerksaid.
Foodtrucks fromFood Junkieand CasaSantiago willbeonhand. Amongthevendorssofarare SparkPermanentJewelry, PointMallard Nutrition,YannettCharming Accessories, MommaToneSweetsand TreatsandSweetP’sLemonade,Weissendsaid.

PricevilleTownCouncilmanTommyPerryhasbeen workingongettingaceiling builtonthenewstageto dealwiththebirds.
“Birdswillnestinthose rafters,anditmakesa mess,soweareputting metalsheetsupunderthe paviliontomakeaceiling,” Perrysaid.Theceilingwill attachtotheexistingrafterwork,thuskeepingthe stagefloorandanyoneon
reflectinghisdeepcommitment tothegrowthandbettermentof thecommunity.
NancyBusbywashonoredwith theEnglish-WalkerAmbassador oftheYearAward,namedafter BettyeEnglishandFayeWalker, forherexceptionalserviceand dedicationtofosteringgrowth forbusinessesintheHartselle community.
Eachawardeeshowcased exemplarydedicationtotheir respectivefieldsandexhibited qualitiesofleadership,compassion,andselflessnesswhich havesignificantlyenrichedthe
itfrombecomingatarget ofthefeatheredfriends,he said.
Thecostoftheimprovementisabout$6,500,he estimated.
Perryisalsoabouttooverseetheinstallationofsod aroundthestagetoimprove thestage’sappearanceand functionality.
“I’mtellingyou,Tommy andhisbrotherandother cityemployeeshaveputa lotofblood,sweatandtears intotheconstructionofthe newstageforthesetypesof events,”Weissendsaid.
Perrysaidworkonthe stagebeganTuesdaybut wasrainedout.
“We’reworkingonit now,sohopefullyitwillbe successful,”hesaid.“We orderedsodtogoaround thebuildinganddressitup. Weareslowlygettingthere, butwehopetohaveitready bynextSaturday.”

Oneofthoseplayerswas thelateDwainKeel.The 6-foot-6postplayerand 1969graduatewasatwotimeAll-Stateselection whentheschoolwasknown asMorganCountyHigh School.
“Dwainwasanoutstandingbasketballplayer,”his coachJackieCoultersaid. “Hewasahardworkerand ateamplayer.HewasNo. 1inmybookasfarasIam concerned.”
OnJan.26,1968,Keel worejerseyNo.51while scoring51pointsin Hartselle’s102-90winat UnionHill.Bothmarks wereschoolrecords.
“Irememberleavingthe gymthatnightandhearingsomeonesaytheywere gladhedidn’twearNo. 80,”Keel’syoungerbrother Dougsaid.
KeeljoinstheMorgan CountySportsHallFame onSaturday.Theinduction banquettakesplaceatthe PricevilleEventCenter.

Keel’sfirstvarsityexperiencewasalosstotheRed Raiders.Hissecondvarsity gamewentmuchbetter. HesparkedtheTigerstoa 50-40winatAustin.Keel scored11pointsandclaimed 13rebounds.

Shortlyaftergraduating fromHartselle,Keelmarriedhislong-timegirlfriend,Sandra.Hewent toworkasalinemanfor HartselleUtilitiesandthen JoeWheelerEMC.
“IwasnineyearsyoungerthanDwainandwhen hewasinhighschoolit seemedlikehewasalways busydoingsomething,” Lackeysaid.“Helikedto huntandfish.Heliked workingwithourfather.
“Ithinkbasketballwas justsomethingelseheliked todo.Hewasgoodatit,but goingtocollegetoplaybas-
ketballdidn’tinteresthim.” Laterinlife,Dwain becameabasketballfan whenhisgranddaughter,ChelseaSmith,played atHartselleandthen Falkville. “Hecametomostallof ourgames,buthewould getsonervoushecouldn’t sitstill,”Smithsaid. Keeldiedin2020atage 71.
