SOLACE OF HOME Edie and Allen Clemons enjoy Hartselle home after travels, moves and careers STORY BY GREGG L. PARKER PHOTOS BY RAW IMAGES 12 Hartselle Living

D

During almost 50 years of marriage, Edie and Allen Clemons have moved 17 times in six different states. Now they can relax, having settled into their home in southwest Hartselle. Built circa 2001, their one-story brick rancher covers 1,840 square feet comprising three bedrooms and two baths – 10 rooms total. The couple bought the house in mid-2017 when Allen retired. “We love our house and don’t have one room that is our favorite,” Allen said. “Edie enjoys the living room where she can sit and read. The fireplace makes it especially cozy and warm in winter.” PUTTING IT TOGETHER Edie and Allen have accumulated “a blend of traditional and country cottage that expresses love of home and family.” They followed up their first purchase, an Ethan Allen cannonball bed, with early American pieces. Now gone, those items furnished their children’s dorm rooms and first apartments. One furniture piece they hold dear is a mahogany rice-carved poster bed, which they bought in 1977 while living in Dothan. Councill Craftsmen, then in Denton, North Carolina, made the bed. “Councill

specialized in 18th-century reproductions. Exquisite sheaves of rice and tobacco leaves carved into the bedposts represent agricultural activities in 18th-century Charleston, South Carolina,” Edie said. One conversation starter is a surfboard coffee table. Their daughter Meredith bought the table at a consignment shop in Asheville, North Carolina. “Meredith tired of it after a while and gave it to us,” Allen said. “We know little about this particular table or surfboard design – other than it became popular in the 1960s.” Rooms reflect bright, clean lines in understated color. With Antique White in the living room, one wall features white-framed photos of children and grandchildren. The dining room and kitchen walls boast Revere Pewter, while the surfboard room is painted in Reticence. The couple chose Toasted Almond for one bedroom and Southern Breeze in the master. All trim is Designer White. COLORS OF THE WIND On the front porch, Edie decorates with seasonal color. In summer she spends hours on the back Hartselle Living 13

patio. She reads, relaxes in the trees’ shade and watches with fascination the hummingbirds that flit around her feeders. Edie also tends to herbs, like basil, rosemary, parsley, oregano, cilantro and chives, along with collards and kale. She is partial to blooms of hydrangeas, geraniums and mums and likes her ferns’ foliage. Allen enjoys yard work – mowing, trimming and pruning. Their front yard’s prominent plantings are boxwoods, crepe myrtles, a maple tree and a birch tree. RETIRED BUT REVITALIZED Edie and Allen are both retired. Edie worked as licensed cosmetologist in New York in 1969 and in Alabama since 1978.

In her hometown of Bennington, Vermont, Edie lived near famous New Englanders: Norman Rockwell offered to paint Edie, but her father dismissed the “local guy” as insignificant, and poet Robert Frost visited Edie’s classroom to read to students. Edie owns prints from painter Grandma Moses, an ancestor. “Edie has primarily been a wonderful mother, wife and homemaker but also has done stints as a fashion model, movie extra, seminary teacher, Boy Scouts of America employee and Tennessee State Board of Optometry citizen member,” Allen said. In addition, Edie has engaged in politics and community service. In veteran support, she helped to build a house for a Marine who lost his legs to an IED in Afghanistan. For The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints, she serves as public affairs specialist for her Decatur congregation. Allen’s grandfather, the late Edward “Preacher” Waddell who farmed for F. E. Burleson on Red Bank Road, said Allen rode with him to town as soon as he could stand on the truck seat. Allen remembers their nighttime deliveries to Main Street’s cotton gin. In the U.S. Navy, Allen was a submariner and nuclear propulsion plant operator on the USS Andrew Jackson, a ballistic missile nuclear submarine. He trained other nuclear operators in Idaho. In 2017 he retired as nuclear facility training manager at Oak Ridge National Laboratory in Tennessee. He enjoyed time at the University of Alabama in Huntsville and now cherishes visits with his 90-year-old mother, Mildred Waddell Clemons.

Edie and Allen have four children: Jennifer, who is moving from Tennessee to Utah; Allen Todd, in Utah; Jonathan in Tokyo, Japan; and Meredith, in Missouri but potentially relocating to Maine. Their 10 grandchildren range from 2-19 years old. Edie and Allen pursue humanitarian work, especially citizen policing, First Methodist Church of Hartselle’s food pantry and Committee on Church Cooperation in Decatur. ENJOYING LIFE For 40-plus years, Edie has ground wheat on a countertop grain mill Allen bought in Idaho. After she bakes freshly ground flour into bread, Allen gladly taste tests the slices. Edie takes pride in her pantry, stocked with cooking essentials and favorite utensils. After making homemade pasta, they enjoy a spaghetti sauce recipe from Edie’s father. “We always tried to ensure family meals together when our children were growing up,” Edie said. “When our children bring their children to visit, we gather in the dining room to enjoy food and company.”

FARMHOUSE INSPIRED Kim and Matt Harper breathe new life into old furniture STORY BY REBEKAH MARTIN PHOTOS BY RAW IMAGES

Hartselle Living 19

K

Kim Harper has a love of all things old. The wife and mother of five runs her small business, Harpermorlands Farmhouse Inspired Furniture, with her husband Matt. They have been married for two years but have known each other for more than a decade, and together the couple breathes new life into pieces that were once destined for the trash heap. Kim said she was never the creative type. Matt studied art in college and pushed her to unlock her creative side after they were married. “We loved to watch Bob Ross, and one day Matt wanted to try oil painting, and I went along with it,” Kim said. “It turned out really beautifully – it was a field of tall grass, and I didn’t really know how it happened. He’s always brought this creative side out in me that I never really knew was there. “When the kids were little, I couldn’t even do the cool mom science projects like everyone did. I was like ‘Here’s a shoebox … put a straw on it,’” she said with a laugh. “In the beginning I didn’t know how to even hold a paintbrush, and now we’re doing all this. If you would have told me a year ago that we were going to find this much success, I would have said you were crazy.” From the early days of oil painting with their children to now repairing and revitalizing antique furniture, the Harpers put their hearts into each project they take on. “If we wouldn’t put it in our house, we won’t touch it,” Matt said.

They have also found they each bring certain skills to the table that meld and work well together. “His mom always said since he was a little kid he would take everything apart just to put it back together,” Kim said. Matt added, “When it comes to the vision, it’s all her … She’s a natural at it. “I’m a very analytical person and follow all the steps; she’s the opposite, but it works,” Matt added. “We work really well together. I love it because we’re so contrasting … I can look at something and pretty quickly figure out how best to repair it, but then she’ll come and reign me in and ask about the functionality of the piece and whether it would sell.” ALL IN THE NAME Harpermorlands isn’t just the name of their business. Kim and Matt have a blended family of five children, ages 11-21, between the two of them. Harpermorlands is a blend of their last names: Harper, Morrison and Grantland. The couple said the business began with a family project everyone had a hand in: the family dining table – which is, of course, farmhouse style and seats seven. It now sits in the middle of their open-air dining room and is a centerpiece of their lives and home. IN STYLE Kim said the farmhouse style has always been one of her favorites, and she can usually visualize the potential of a piece of furniture the moment she sees it. “There’s so much character, and it’s so appealing to me,” she said. “This piece looks like, if it could talk, it would tell me a really interesting story.”

This piece looks like, if it could talk, it would tell me a really interesting story. - Kim Harper

Kim said she looks for pieces to make and sell that will serve purpose – not just look nice. “We want it to be beautiful but functional and dual-purposed, too,” she said. “Anything that has storage or more than one use will be a project I take on.” Through it all, Kim said the lessons they’ve been able to teach their sons are a big reason why they do what they do. “We’ve taught our boys how to work hard, and then you don’t have to spend so much money when you can take something apart and create something

else,” she said. “Just teaching them those things and the labor of work, I think that’s meant a lot to us.” “Also the value of quality pieces that will last as opposed to cheap pieces that might be pretty but won’t stand the test of time,” Matt added. Kim and Matt enjoy spending time together with their five sons: Michael, 21, Daniel, 21, Jackson, 19, Brandon, 18, and Liam, 11. Kim and Matt sell their pieces at a booth at the Hartselle Antique Mall and on Facebook. Hartselle Living 23

BRING SOME FLAVOR TO THE NEW YEAR RECIPES AND PHOTOS BY CONSTANCE SMITH

W

When the new year comes around, many people look to make changes in their lives. One of the most common goals for the new year is to eat healthier. The recipes I am sharing with you here not only keep a focus on good ingredients, they are also easy on the schedule. One recipe is made in your slow cooker, and the other is an Instant Pot/pressure cooker recipe.

EASY CREAMY TOMATO ANDÂ CHICKEN SOUP

We all love a thick, hearty soup that sticks to your ribs – but other times we want something a little more subdued and unpretentious. This slow cooker chicken soup is simple to make, but it will quickly become one of your favorites. INGREDIENTS 1 can (15 oz.) tomato sauce 1 can (15 oz.) diced tomatoes 1 can (15 oz.) whole fat coconut milk 1 cup chicken stock 1 cup diced red onion 2 tsp. Italian seasoning 1/2 tsp. freshly ground black pepper 1/2 tsp. sea salt 2 cloves garlic, minced 1 1/2 lbs. boneless skinless chicken breasts or thighs Fresh, chopped parsley INSTRUCTIONS 1. To begin, combine all of the ingredients except the chicken and parsley in your slow cooker. Stir. 2. Nestle the chicken down into the mixture. 3. Cover and cook on high for four hours or low for eight hours. 4. Carefully transfer the chicken to a cutting board. 5. Using two forks, shred the chicken. Return the shredded chicken to the soup and stir. 6. Serve topped with fresh parsley.

PEPPERED ROAST BEEF INGREDIENTS 1 Tb. avocado or coconut oil 3 lbs. beef chuck roast 1/2 tsp. sea salt, divided 1/2 tsp. freshly ground black pepper, divided 3/4 cup beef stock 1/4 cup white wine vinegar 3 cloves garlic, minced 1 large red onion, peeled and sliced vertically, end to end 1 red bell pepper, deseeded and sliced into strips 1 green bell pepper, deseeded and sliced into strips 3 cubanelle peppers – I use a mixture of red and green from the garden – deseeded and sliced into strips INSTRUCTIONS 1. To begin, salt and pepper the roast on each side with a 1/4 teaspoon each of the salt and pepper 2. Combine the beef stock, vinegar and garlic in a dish or measuring cup and set aside for now. 3. Add the oil to your Instant Pot and press the sauté button. 4. When the oil is shimmering hot, place the roast into the pot. Let it get a nice sear on the meat by leaving it perfectly still for five minutes. Using tongs, carefully turn it over and sear the other side for five minutes as well. 5. Press the “cancel” button.

6. Pour the broth mixture over the roast. 7. Arrange the onions and peppers all over the top of the roast. 8. Close and seal the Instant Pot and press the “manual” button. Set the time to 45 minutes. Ensure the valve is closed properly. 9. When the cook cycle is finished, lift the roast from the Instant Pot and place it on a platter. Let it rest for about 10 minutes before slicing. 10. Scoop the onion and peppers out and arrange them around the roast. 11. Season with the remaining salt and pepper.

SUGAR MAMA’S BRINGS SWEET TREATS TO DOWNTOWN STORY AND PHOTOS BY CONSTANCE SMITH

28 Hartselle Living

Y

You might have noticed a sweet new business has opened up right on Main Street under the striped awning by the railroad tracks. Sugar Mama’s Bakery opened in early November and is owned by Lindsay Kubica. Lindsay is not a stranger to running a business. In the past she had a well-known boutique, called The Olive Co. The retail shop was originally located in the McClanahan Hardware building, a hardware store run by her grandparents. A few years later, after spending some time in Hawaii with her husband, Adam, she reopened The Olive Co. on the corner of Main and Railroad – but while Lindsay had a history in retail, in her heart she always wanted to have a little bakery. Lindsay has always loved to cook and bake. She said one of her fondest memories from childhood is of making clover rolls with her grandmother. She dreamed of taking that passion and turning it into a business, but she was hesitant. At her grand opening for the retail shop in the Main Street location, someone made the comment that the event room upstairs would make a great place for a little restaurant or coffee shop. That was it. Lindsay said that chance visitor had no idea how much her heart was yearning to do just that. Ever since, her dream of starting her own bakery was all she could think about. One day, she was talking with Adam about it, and his response to her was “Just do it!” So she decided to set aside her nerves and go about realizing her dream. Sugar Mama’s offers fresh baked goods and treats, such as cinnamon rolls, fudge, brownies and cookies. The most popular menu item, however, seems to be the scones. There is a DIY coffee and tea bar where you can get a cup of fresh coffee and add your favorite flavorings, if you like. At lunchtime you could stop in for a soup and sandwich, chicken salad or pimento cheese, pasta salad or other midday fare. One of the lovely touches in the bakery is the children’s nook, The Kids’ Cafe. It creates a welcoming environment for parents of young children, offering a place for the children to play while the adults enjoy their chat. Sugar Mama’s even offers events for children, like a Saturday cookie station. In addition to baked goods and treats, Sugar Mama’s offers something that surprised Lindsay with its popularity – “take and bake” casseroles. Lindsay says doing the casseroles was a bit of a whim. She thought she might be able to sell a couple of them, so the week she opened the bakery, she made 17 casseroles to go. Twelve of them sold the very first day. She now offers three varieties of casseroles to choose from: poulet, chicken spaghetti and beef enchilada, with more in the works. Stop in to Sugar Mama’s and grab a scone and coffee or a pan of poulet to take home to the family. The bakery is located at 101 Railroad St. SW. Hartselle Living 29

DIY SPA BASKET

I

STORY AND PHOTOS BY CONSTANCE SMITH

It’s always nice to treat yourself or others to a spa day. This time of year, as lots of wedding plans being made, what better way to say thank you to your bridesmaids and others who make the magic happen than with a basket of pampering supplies? This DIY Spa Basket contains a natural beeswax candle, sea salt scrub and lotion bar. Each is scented with essential oils and can be customized with your favorite fragrances simply by changing the oils.

NATURAL BEESWAX CANDLES This tutorial makes three 8-ounce candles. INGREDIENTS ● bamboo skewers ● 3 candle wicks (6 inches) ● 3 half-pint canning jars ● 1 lb. beeswax ● ½ cup coconut oil ● a metal pitcher or clean, empty coffee can ● a saucepan large enough to set the pitcher in (double boiler) ● water ● essential oils (recommended: half lavender and half vanilla) INSTRUCTIONS 1. Prepare your jars by placing the wicks in the center of the jar. Many candle wicks come with small two-sided sticky pads that adhere the wick to the bottom of the jar. If yours do not, you can use a dot from a hot glue gun to hold it in place. 2. Lay a bamboo skewer over the top of the jar and bend the wick over to keep it in place. You can wrap the wick around the skewer if you need to or use a piece of tape to hold it in place. 3. Place the beeswax and coconut oil in the pitcher or coffee can. 4. Put the pitcher in the saucepan and fill the pan with enough water to come up the outside of the pitcher without spilling into the pitcher. Heat the pan over medium heat until the water just begins to boil. 5. Keep the water at a gentle boil until all of the beeswax and oil have melted. 6. Once they have melted, add 15-20 drops of your favorite essential oils and stir with a bamboo skewer. 7. Carefully pour the melted wax into the jars, leaving about an inch of space at the top. 8. Reposition the skewer holding the wick if you need to so that it is in the center of the jar. 9. Let the jars cool completely, without disturbing the candles. 10. Once they have fully hardened, trim the wicks to about half an inch.

NATURAL SEA SALT SCRUB This tutorial makes one 8-ounce jar of sea salt scrub.

MATERIALS NEEDED: ● a small mixing bowl ● ½ cup coconut oil ● ½ cup coarse, natural sea salt ● 10 drops essential oil (recommended: lavender or rose with vanilla) ● spoon ● 8-ounce decorative jar with lid INSTRUCTIONS: 1. Place all of the ingredients in the mixing bowl and stir to combine. 2. Transfer the scrub mixture into the decorative jar. Hartselle Living 31

WEDDING TRENDS AND STORY BY REBEKAH MARTIN PHOTOS BY RAW IMAGES AND LAUREN COFFEY PHOTOGRAPHY

Trends: Some vanish overnight, and some are here to stay. Local wedding photographers and planners to bring you the dazzling details they’re seeing in the industry and the most exciting upcoming trends to expect in 2020. 1. Return to tradition I’m seeing more and more brides move away from the trendy Southern, rustic style wedding and return to the sleek charactics of a classic wedding. Instead of first looks, brides are waiting until the ceremony to see their grooms, and they are sporting sleek ponytails and wearing classic gowns. Lauren Coffey, Lauren Coffey Photography

4. Bringing the inside out

2. Pops of color

I’m seeing the use of indoor furniture used outside to add a bit of personality to a wedding. Velvet lounging chairs and antique doors used as props for photos are gaining steam.

I’ve seen a ton of brides this year who have favored a more neutral color palette and added pops of color in their bouquets, boutineers, arbors and centerpieces. Usually these colors are bright and vibrant and go a long way toward jazzing up a toned-down color scheme.

5. Casual footwear 3. Personal touches

One size doesn’t fit all anymore, and we’re seeing it in weddings too. Brides and grooms are choosing to incorporate family heirlooms and personal touches into just about every area of their big day. One groom I know used a shotgun shell shot by his late grandfather as a boutineer as a way to remember his loved one. Lauren Coffey, Lauren Coffey Photography

36 Hartselle Living

More brides are becoming less formal when it comes to their footwear. Comfort and style are important with this trend, and I’m seeing brides keeping it casual with white Keds or Kate Spade bridal shoes. Rachel Howard, RAW Images

DAZZLING DETAILS 7. Colorful exits

People are moving away from using sparklers at their reception exits, and some venues have prohibited them due to the fire hazard. I’m seeing colorful substitutions such as glow sticks, pom poms, rose petals, glitter and even sprinkles. These make for cute photos too! Rachel Howard, RAW Images

6. Non-traditional cakes and desserts

Once upon a time, a bride’s cake and a groom’s cake were staples at any wedding. These days, unconventional desserts and cakes are becoming more popular. Anything from a donut wall to sheet cakes, cupcakes, naked cakes with little icing and smores bars are becoming a mainstay when it comes to sweet treats. Rachel Howard, RAW Images

8. Greenery instead of florals

9. Easy menus

Ivy, eucalyptus, Italian ruscus and succulents are taking the place of filling a venue with expensive floral arrangements.

Charcuterie tables, fruits, cheeses, taco bars, baked potato bars and popcorn bars are taking the place of full meals and multiple courses.

Amanda Colton June 22, 2019 How we met: Amanda and Colton’s story begins in summer 2013 with a tweet about their Bichon Frise dogs, Chipper and Lacee, who they now call their “matchmakers.” The couple hit it off while bonding over their dogs over Twitter, and then Colton asked Amanda to a movie the following evening; however, things did not turn out as planned. Amanda had decided to go outside and swing on her old swing set; the half-rotten swing set broke, so Amanda “bailed out” – and broke her humerus completely in two. Since Colton had 40 Hartselle Living

to return to the University of South Alabama for baseball, and Amanda was in the emergency room, they decided to call off the date. Amanda found out three years into dating that Colton thought she had lied about the accident and used a fake x-ray to get out of going on a date with him. The two stayed in touch during her senior year in high school and her first semester at the University of Alabama. During Christmas 2014, they finally made it to their first date. Amanda’s Mawmaw passed away that January. Colton knew how upset she was, so he stayed on the phone with her for four hours then drove six hours from Mobile to Hartselle to attend the visitation. He met every single member of Amanda’s family at the visitation, including her parents and brothers, as her “friend” because they were not officially dating at the time – an awkward situation. Later they began dating and have been together since then.

The Proposal: A few years later, Colton transferred to UAH to continue pursuing a degree in mechanical engineering. Dec. 16, 2017, Colton and Amanda’s families attended her graduation from the University of Alabama – but she had no idea Colton had much more planned for the day besides the graduation ceremony. Afterward, both of their families headed to Denny Chimes for pictures. As Amanda turned around on the steps of Denny Chimes to face the camera, Colton was on one knee in front of her with a beautiful ring. She of course said yes! Favorite Wedding Detail: Amanda’s favorite detail about the wedding is how many amazing people helped make it so special. Everything was gorgeous. Amanda’s mom pulled out all the stops to make sure their wedding day was amazing and, together with their wedding team, came up with so many little details to make every-

thing extra special. A couple of Amanda’s favorite details were her handkerchiefs and flowers. Her “something old” was two handkerchiefs that belonged to her MawMaw and Auntie, who were two very special ladies in her life. Favorite Moments: The couple’s favorite part of the wedding ceremony was lighting the unity candle. During the rehearsal, they took extra care to place the stand where they would have no problems getting behind it, and it wasn’t until they were walking toward it during the ceremony that they realized it had been moved – and there was only about a foot of space to work with. Amanda and Colton were terrified they were going to knock the stand over and catch the church on fire. Thankfully, that didn’t happen, but they had to hold back laughter after they finished because they were so relieved. Their favorite parts of the reception were the toasts, the dances and Colton’s spec-

tacular fall. Getting to hear their closest friends and family at both the rehearsal and the reception was great, and their first dances with their loved ones were so fun and sweet. The funniest moment of the night was right before they left. Everyone

was dancing to “Shout,” and Colton accidentally slipped on Amanda’s train and sprained his ankle. Everyone, including Colton, laughed so hard – but though they did have to go to Walmart at 6 a.m. the next morning to get a brace.

Emily

Tyler

March 23, 2019 42 Hartselle Living

How we met: Even though they grew up less than a mile apart, Emily Hill and Tyler Teague met in Starkville when a mutual friend invited Tyler and his brother to the Auburn University versus Mississippi State University game in 2012. After the game, the two began texting and talking regularly. A month later, and they were a couple! The Proposal: Six years later, after graduating college and starting new careers, they returned to Starkville for the 2018 Auburn/ MSU matchup. Before the game, Tyler led Emily to the Chapel of Memories, a lovely brick chapel complete with stained glass windows and a fountain, where he popped the question. The setting was perfect

and heartfelt. Tyler couldn’t have planned more personal and romantic moment. Favorite Details: The ceremony was the best memory for the bride and groom. Felicity, a string ensemble from Huntsville, provided classical and contemporary music that set a beautiful tone for the afternoon. Dr. Blake Kersey officiated the ceremony and truly captured the essence of who Emily and Tyler are as individuals and together. He incorporated their love, appreciation

and personalities within the ceremony in the sweetest of ways. It made for a wonder-

fully personal and moving ceremony for the couple and all in attendance.

Sarah Ann

Parker

April 6, 2019

How we met: Parker and Sarah Ann met at Troy University while pursing their degrees. It was Sarah Ann’s first semester as a college student; she and Parker were in the Sound of the South marching band together, but they did not formally meet until having a class together. Sarah Ann remem-

bers trying to focus on what was happening in class, but after realizing they had marching band in common, Parker attempted to make a friend. Sarah Ann remembers calling her mom after meeting him to tell her about “the annoying guy in computer class.” She and Parker continued to be friends for some time until the friendship blossomed into a relationship. They dated for several years while finishing school and continuing their education with additional degrees. The Proposal: After dating for several years – some of those years long distance – Parker was going to propose. Sarah Ann continued her education by pursuing a master’s degree, and both of them, along with their families, were excited about the

years ahead. Parker decided to propose after graduation; both families were going to be at graduation, so he took that opportunity to catch Sarah Ann off guard. She was so excited about graduating and that so many people wanted to come celebrate, she had no clue what Parker had planned afterwards! Sarah Ann wanted to go to her favorite place on campus that had a beautiful landscape and waterfalls to take pictures after the ceremony. While she and Parker were taking pictures, her dad told them to close their eyes because he had a present for them. The next thing Sarah Ann knew, Parker was holding a sign that a dear friend made for him that said “Will you marry me?” and was down on one knee. Sarah Ann, of course, said yes! It was

such a special moment, and being able to celebrate with their families made it even more memorable. Favorite Moment: One of their favorite moments while dating was performing in the Sound of the South together. It was special to share such a unique experience with the person you love. Parker and Sarah Ann would always look for each other on the field and try to be close to each other during the show. They would exchange glances at each other while in the stands and make faces at each other during rehearsal. It was fun for them to support each other at something they both truly enjoyed. The Sound of the South was like one big family. One of their favorite memories during their wedding ceremony was

braiding the cross. Sarah Ann’s father handmade a cross and attached strings to it so the couple could braid the three strands together. They enjoyed that moment together because it felt like it was just them, braiding their strands together, with one strand representing

God. In that moment, they were showing that together, along with the Lord, their marriage is strong and cannot be broken. Parker and Sarah Ann have that cross hanging in their home today for the constant reminder of how blessed they are.

Kelsey Jackson Oct. 12, 2019 How we met: Kelsey and her friend Grace decided it would be fun to invite some people to go to Top Golf one night. Grace’s boyfriend, Chase, invited Jackson to come since he was home from Auburn for the summer. No one there had intentions 46 Hartselle Living

of setting Kelsey and Jackson up prior to these plans, and neither of them was looking to be in a relationship. But as the night went on, everyone had a good time laughing and making fun of Kelsey golfing – and the next day Jackson said he would like to see her again. Even though Kelsey said she “had plans,” Jackson was a little persistent. What started as fun summer night with friends led to what will be a lifetime together. The Proposal: Jackson knew pretty quickly how special Kelsey is, and it didn’t take very long for him to realize he loved her! Once he knew she loved him too (somehow), they started exciting conversations about a real future together. At the time, Jackson was unsure whether the things they

talked about would actually turn into anything, but he knew they made him excited, filled with happiness and a little nervous. After spending the holidays with Kelsey and her family, Jackson knew she was the one he wanted to spend his life with and share every day with. He had been praying, trying to find out if these things were just the things he wanted, and he woke up a week or so before he proposed with an unforgettable thought of: “Go ask her dad; if he says yes, then it is time to do it.” So the very next opportunity that arose, Jackson asked Bro. Joe for the blessing to marry his daughter. He said yes and gave Jackson his blessing. Jackson had never been so overcome with joy and happiness! He immediately planned

a dinner to “celebrate Kelsey’s passing of the NCLEX exam.” She had no idea! The evening leading up to the dinner, he was nervous, and the dinner was even more nerve racking. After they finished their entrees, he stood up, walked around the table to stand in front of Kelsey, got on one knee, took out the ring and said “Kelsey, will you marry me?” She followed by saying, “If I say yes, you know you’re stuck with me forever, right?” Jackson replied yes, and she said, “Then yes!” After that night, Jackson had the love of his life as his fiancé and felt like the luckiest man alive! Favorite Moments: One of their favorite moments of the day was the ceremony. It wasn’t until then, walking down

the aisle to Jackson, that all the craziness became real to Kelsey. It made it more special that Kelsey’s granddad was the one performing the service – even though he called his only granddaughter by the wrong

name! Ceremonies are usually so serious, but Kelsey always wanted a ceremony that was fun, full of laughter and celebration of two people coming together as one. It was perfect.

Elizabeth Terrance June 1, 2019 48 Hartselle Living

How we met: Elizabeth and Terrance met the “old-fashioned” way: online. For their first date, they attended a Huntsville Havoc hockey game. It was Valentine’s Day, and Elizabeth was a bit hesitant to go at first, but the two have been together ever since – and they still enjoy going to Havoc games for date night! The Proposal: The proposal was a complete surprise. Elizabeth and Terrance

were hiking on Monte Sano Mountain in Huntsville one afternoon, and once they were at the lookout spot, Terrance got down on one knee and proposed. An unsuspecting bystander acted as an impromptu photographer and was able to catch a few shots for the happy couple. They returned to Monte Sano to take engagement photos. Favorite Details: The big day turned out better than the couple could have ever

imagined. Their favorite part was celebrating with all of their friends and family at the reception. The Midnighters did a great job of keeping the dance floor full all night long. One of Elizabeth’s favorite details from our wedding was the beautiful flowers provided by Petals. The couple received so many compliments on the toffee roses Ali used in the arrangements! In fact, Elizabeth loved the flowers so much that she dried out several bouquets and had them framed.

Christy Myron Aug. 30, 2019 How we met: Christy and Myron first met more than nine years ago when Myron’s youngest son, Levi, and Christy’s oldest son, Chandler, were in the same grade and played basketball at Hartselle High School. Myron was an involved 50 Hartselle Living

parent who attended Open House events and kept up with Levi’s grades and academic progress. Christy taught Levi for two years, so there were times Myron and Christy communicated about Levi’s progress in her English classes. Fast forward to December 2018, when Christy was Christmas shopping in Decatur, and Levi saw her. After talking for a few minutes, Christy asked Levi how his family was doing, and Levi told her his parents had divorced. Christy told Levi she hated to hear that news, and she shared the news of her own divorce. After leaving the store, Levi called his dad to let him know he had seen Christy and told his dad he should ask her out on a date. A couple months

later, Levi mentioned Christy to his dad once again, and Myron decided to send a Facebook friend request. The door to communication was opened when Christy accepted the request and sent Myron a quick message about seeing Levi at Christmas. Myron and Christy went on their first date May 20, 2019, and they quickly felt a strong connection to each other. After dating and spending a lot of time together during the summer, Myron proposed to Christy Aug. 2. The Engagement: Although Myron and Christy had not dated for a long time, there was no doubt in either of their minds that God had paved the way for them to be together. Myron decided to

take Christy out to eat after work and then take her out on Smith Lake to watch the sun set. While on the lake, Myron stopped the boat and asked Christy to move to the front of the boat so he could take a picture of her looking at the sun as it was setting. While Christy was looking toward the sun, Myron was getting the ring ready to ask her to be his wife when she turned around. Since the school year was starting back, and Myron’s work schedule was going to be very hectic because of a big work project, they decided to get married Aug. 30, during the long Labor Day weekend. Planning a wedding on such a short time frame was quite involved, but everything worked out perfectly.

Favorite Details: Myron and Christy were fortunate to be able to schedule their wedding at a beautiful place called The Patio at Smith Lake. Besides having their children involved in their wedding, their favorite moment was when Christy walked down the path toward Myron. The couple had decided to incorporate a “first look” as Christy walked out. As Myron looked toward the lake, Christy’s

sons escorted her down the path toward Myron. Christy was supposed to wait for the song “God Bless the Broken Road” to end before walking the rest of the way, but when Myron turned around, she immediately walked to him and kissed him. After the ceremony, Myron prayed for their new family and gave each of their boys a special keepsake to remind them of the special day and their new family.

Rachel

Nick

June 1, 2019 How we met: Nick and Rachel met during their first year of college. They had a history class together and also had the same English teacher but weren’t in the same English class. One day their English teacher got 52 Hartselle Living

sick, and Rachel didn’t realize class was canceled, so she had to wait around awhile before history class began. Rachel remembers being so mad because she kept thinking about how she could have slept in! It was a good thing it happened that way, though, because Nick happened to be waiting outside of class. The two started talking and realized they had the same teacher at different times. They started talking before and after their classes, and Rachel remembers looking forward to Tuesdays and Thursdays so she could talk to the boy from her history class! The two soon started dating – and now Nick says he’s never been more thankful that a teacher got sick.

The Engagement: Six years later in July 2018, Nick and Rachel went on a beach trip with some family and friends. One of the couples that went with them was expecting a baby, and everyone went out to the beach to take pictures for the pregnancy announcement. All the couples took turns taking pictures, too, and when it was their turn, Nick proposed! It is very special to the couple that they have this moment in a picture and that their family and friends were there. Their friends got them a custom cookie cake (one of their favorites – they like food!) to celebrate. It was very special, and they are so happy they have photos to remember that special day.

The Wedding Day: Special moments at their wedding included Rachel being able to include her late grandmother in the wedding by wearing her pearl necklace. Rachel gave the pearls to her father, along with a handwritten note from her grandmother, during their first look. Since the pearls were his mother’s, it was a bittersweet moment. First looks with Nick were a little less teary, and Rachel doesn’t think she has ever felt more beautiful than during that moment! Rachel and Nick were both very emotional during the ceremony, but their reception had lots of smiles, with their first dance as a married couple, the

father/daughter dance, mother/son dance and a generation dance. Rachel especial-

ly loved the generation dance because so many couples danced!
