AUG. 26

Priceville travels to Fairview for a matchup between two playoff teams from a year ago. Fairview advanced to the 5A semi-finals while Priceville fell in the second round. The Bulldogs won the previous matchup in 2019 by a 31-21 score after trailing 21-7 in the first half.

AUG. 19

West Morgan travels to Randolph to open the 2022 season. The matchup features a Randolph team that advanced to the second round of the 4A playoffs last season and a Rebels team looking to get back to the playoffs for the first time since 2017. The Raiders defeated West Morgan 32-25 in their last matchup in 2019.

OCT. 21

This matchup could have region title implications when the two teams meet in the final region game of the season. Both teams finished second in their region last season and advanced to the second round of the playoffs. This game will showcase plenty of talent on the field with Priceville’s Mason Cartee and Jake Langlois sling with Randolph’s Nic Strong and Conner Goodson.

4.

DANVILLE AT FALKVILLE AUG. 26

This rivalry has been played every year since 1976, with Danville holding a 28-19 edge. Both teams are looking to take the next step back to the playoffs after missing out last season.

5.

PLAINVIEW AT PRICEVILLE AUG. 19

SEPT. 9

Falkville hits the road as they travel to Tanner to open region play. The Rattlers defeated Falkville 35-28 last season, so the Blue Devils will be looking to get a win and a boost up in the playoff race in 2A Region 7.

9. NEW HOPE AT DECATUR HERITAGE SEPT. 23

The Eagles, who have to replace a lot of offensive firepower, welcome New Hope for a nonregion midseason matchup. The 4A Indians finished last season 4-6, while Decatur Heritage was 10-3 and advanced to the third round of the 1A playoffs.

10. WEST MORGAN AT DESHLER SEPT. 30

West Morgan picked up their first win in the series last season with a 28-19 victory. Both teams should be contending for a playoff spot in this midseason region matchup in Tuscumbia. Unfortunately, Howard Chappell Stadium has not been kind to the Rebels, as Deshler has won the previous two matchups by a combined 96-14. But momentum is on the side of the Rebels heading into this matchup. MORGAN COUNTY FOOTBALL 2022

CLASSIFICATION 6A Region 7 2021 RECORD 10-1 (7-0)

By RUSSELL FRYE

L

Last season ended sourly for coach Bryan Moore and his Hartselle Tigers. After finishing the regular season 10-0 and ranked No. 2 in the state, the Tigers fell in the opening round of the 6A playoffs to Gardendale by a score of 35-38. Heading onto the 2022 season, Moore has improved the schedule that his Tigers will face, which will better prepare them for the postseason. The Tigers will have home games against Austin, Jackson-Olin and Bob Jones while traveling to Gadsden City and Oxford. The Tigers have plenty of firepower returning, with brothers Izayah and Ri Fletcher leading the way on offense. Also returning are wide receiver Eli Tidwell and four senior offensive linemen. The defense suffered some losses due to graduation but will be extremely talented, with juniors Peyton Steele, Jake Haynes and Jakaleb Goodwin leading the way. Joining them will be senior Walker Hoyle and sophomore Porter Simmons. Another addition to the team this season is defensive coordinator Bert Newton, who returns to Hartselle after a year at Vestavia Hills. His return bolsters an already deep coaching staff and puts one of the best defensive minds in the state back on the Hartselle sidelines.

in only eight games last season. He had an 11.8 yards per carry average to lead the team. He also had 178 yards receiving and three touchdowns, along with 261 return yards and a score. Junior Drew Gatlin and freshman Jayden Morris will provide depth. “Ri had a tremendous season last season despite an ankle injury early in the season,” said Moore. “He has bulked up this offseason to prepare for this year. He can hurt teams with his running and catching ability out of the backfield.” Zeke McHan returns for his second season as a starter at fullback. In addition, junior Stinnett Hagemann will see time at fullback and tight end.

WIDE RECEIVERS

Seniors Izayah Fletcher and Eli Tidwell return to lead the wide receiver unit. Fletcher, who has several Power 5 offers, had 52 receptions for 852 yards and eight touch-

Senior Jack Smith, who recently committed to the University of Arkansas for baseball, and junior Landon Blackwood are battling for the starting position. Each player offers different skills that will help the team this season. Smith has a strong arm and can run the ball, while Blackwood is more of an accurate passer, similar to his brother JT who led the Tigers last season. Despite who wins the battle, both players will see playing time throughout the season. In addition, sophomore Noah Lee and freshman Carter Lee will provide additional depth.

Senior Ryan Aymett will get the first shot at the other starting spot. Junior Scout Arp will provide some depth.

Junior Jake Haynes will be the starter at middle linebacker and lead the group. Seniors Kaden Worley and Treyce Oden will start at outside linebackers. Drew Gatlin will see time at the middle linebacker position. Overall, this position may be the deepest on the team, with about 20 players in the group.

SECONDARY

Three-year starter Peyton Steele returns at free safety to lead the secondary along with two-year starters Walker Hoyle and

Drake Borden. Hoyle will move to safety. Jake England saw a lot of time in the secondary last season. Jakaleb Goodwin returns for his third season after missing the second half of last season. He will slide in at the other cornerback position, opposite Borden.

SPECIAL TEAMS

Crawford Lang returns for his third season as a starter on special teams. He battled through some injuries last season that cost him the first four games last season. Despite the injuries, he was 50 of 50 in point after attempts and 4-of-5 in field goals. He will handle field goals and kickoffs. He will be backed up by his brother Cooper and senior Noah Yates. Eli Tidwell will handle the punting duties. The return game will have Izayah and Ri Fletcher on kickoffs, while Eli Tidwell and Jakaleb Goodwin will see time as punt returners.

BREAKOUT POTENTIAL

It is not often that a senior is considered for a breakout season, but senior Jake Smith has the chance. He has done the work over the last two seasons, learned the offense, and is primed for a big season with the talent around him. “Smith is a player that everyone rallies around on and off the field,” said Moore. “He has developed well on and off the field to prepare him for this moment.” Sophomore Porter Simmons who showed flashes of brilliance last season, has had a big offseason and has set himself up for a huge year. “Porter is a difference maker for our defense,” said Moore. “He will continue to grow and getter better, which is scary for opponents.”

TEAM INFORMATION

PATRIOTS

CLASSIFICATION 5A Region 8 2021 RECORD 2-8 (2-4)

By RUSSELL FRYE

T

The Brewer Patriots enter year two of the Matt Plunkett era looking to continue to build on the momentum they gained from the end of the 2021 season. The Patriots have had a good offseason on and off the field. The gains in the weight room will be seen on the field and will help make a difference in the upcoming season. Despite finishing 2-8 last season, Brewer is excited about the upcoming season. They won two of the final three to end their season on a high note. Returning to lead the team this year will be quarterback Caden Childers, who is entering his second year as a starter. In addition, he has a talented group of receivers to help in the passing game. The Patriots enter fall camp with several important battles that the outcome will determine starters in a couple of key spots, especially on the offensive and defensive lines.

WIDE RECEIVERS

DJ Burney and Walker Latham return at receiver for their second year as starters. Burney, a junior, had 33 receptions for 488 yards and three touchdowns, while Latham, a sophomore, had 40 receptions for 415 yards and a team-high five touchdowns. Senior Garrett Clemons and sophomores Will Clemons and Andres Avilla will join them. In addition, some youngsters who could eventually work into playing time are freshman Hunter Knighten and eighth grader Cam Ballinger.

OFFENSIVE LINE

The offensive line will be led by three seniors who have developed into good linemen. Leading the way will be Noe Perez, Chevy Cantrell and David Ratje. Perez and Cantrell are battling for the left tackle spot. Ratje will start at left guard. Freshman Logan Duke will get the start at center, and coaches are very high on him moving forward. Junior Tim Hunter will start at right guard while senior QUARTERBACKS Kaleb Hall will start at right tackle. Caden Childers returns for year two as a starter. He finished with 1,647 yards passing and 11 touchdowns and added 338 yards rushing and six touchdowns, which led the team in both categories. “I have challenged him to take over this team,” said Plunkett. “Caden can help us move the sticks if a play breaks down, which is huge for us.” Cason Oden will be the primary backup for the Patriots. He has pushed Childers in the offseason and will be prepared if his number is called. Garrett Clemons and freshman Hunter Knighten will provide depth.

RUNNING BACKS

The Patriots enter the 2022 season with Lukas Simpson as the starting running back. Simpson has worked hard in the offseason in preparing for the upcoming season. Austyn Holmes will be the primary backup in his first year of varsity football. Also providing depth will be JJ Nicholson, CJ Watson, Connor Kirby and Chase Smith.

CLASSIFICATION 3A Region 7 2021 RECORD 5-5 (2-4)

By RUSSELL FRYE Entering his second year as head coach at Danville, Andro Williams is working to rebuild the Hawks program. This year’s team will be the youngest group of players that he has ever fielded during his 16 years as a head coach. But he is excited about his team and what they can develop into this season. The Hawks started last season with a three-game win streak, including wins over county rivals Brewer and Falkville. Unfortunately, they dropped five of their last seven games and missed out on a playoff spot. This season, Danville moves into a new region will all new opponents. However, the young Hawks look to get off to another hot start to put them in a position to get back to the playoffs. Gage Taylor will lead the way for coach Williams, who started at quarterback and safety last season.

Sophomore Ben Ellenburg will get the first look at the starting quarterback position. He saw time as a reserve last season. Last year’s starter, Gage Taylor, is being shifted around on the offense but can be used if needed in the position. Providing depth at the position will be freshman Jace Glenn.

RUNNING BACKS

The running backs will be young and inexperienced. Williams is looking for sophomore Sawyer Tapscott and freshman Kade Taylor to get starting reps early in the season. In addition, Cody Barber, a sophomore, will see time in the backfield.

WIDE RECEIVERS

Senior Tristan Bishop, one of the most improved players on the team, and Jacobi Batts will see time as starters. Bishop joined the team last season and saw limited time. BULLDOGS

By RUSSELL FRYE

P

Priceville enters year four of the Chris Foster era looking to make another step in the evolution of its program. The Bulldogs, winners of a school record 10 games last season, returned to the playoffs for the second time in three years. They opened with a big win over visiting Etowah. Unfortunately, Priceville fell on the road at Madison Academy in the second round. The offensive line, which has been a strength for the team the last three years, will be inexperienced heading into the season. Fortunately, the skill positions will be the strength of the offense and should help deal with the growing pains in the offensive line. The game plan starts with Mason Cartee at running back. He stepped in for all-state performer Jerry Burton, and the Bulldogs’ offense didn’t miss a beat. Joining him will be returning starter at quarterback Jackson Prickett and wingback Xander Gaines. The defense will be young and inexperienced. Fortunately, Jake Langlois, returning for his third year as a starter at linebacker, will anchor the defense.

good touch and feel on throwing the ball. Mason Cartee will be the backup if needed.

RUNNING BACKS

All-State running back Mason Cartee leads the way for Priceville. As a junior, he rushed for 2,363 yards and 32 touchdowns. Jaylen Mosely will be the primary backup to Cartee. Moseley is a transfer from Hazel Green. Xander Gaines and Blitz Clemons return as wing-backs. Gaines ran for 444 yards and two touchdowns while adding 282 yards receiving and a touchdown.

BUILDING

A WINNER How Chris Foster turned around Priceville football By RUSSELL FRYE

Photos by JERONIMO NISA

Before Chris Foster was hired in July 2019, the Priceville Bulldogs had experienced just three winning seasons in 13 seasons of varsity football. Their record during those seasons was a combined 39-93. The Bulldogs’ best season came in 2015 when they finished 8-3 with a region championship. Unfortunately, the season ended in heartbreak, losing 29-28 to Hamilton in the first round of the 4A state playoffs. Priceville was led by head coach Dirk Strunk and quarterback Kaleb Barker, who was named to the 4A 1st All-State Team and 4A Back of the Year. He was the first player in Priceville history to be named All-State. Fast forward to July of 2019. Head coach Jason Simmons left after one year to take a job as an assistant at Oxford. The Bulldogs were coming off their second consecutive 2-8 season and winners of four games in the previous three years.

26

MORGAN COUNTY FOOTBALL 2022

Principal Mark Mason took a chance on Foster by naming him head coach without any previous head coaching experience. “He comes highly recommended by his former head coach and his current and former administrators,” said Mason after hiring Foster. “He is very knowledgeable about both sides of the football. In addition, he has experience as a coordinator, both offensively and defensively.” He previously had coached at Aliceville and Samson before spending four years at his alma mater Brookwood. While at Brookwood as offensive coordinator, his teams broke several school records. “I know with the timing of my hire that this will be a challenging start for Priceville, but we are not going to give up on the year,” Foster said when he met team parents for the first time. “We will go out and work hard to prepare for the upcoming season.”

Cappi was named 4A 1st Team All-State, while Burton was an honorable mention selection after dealing with injuries throughout the season. Heading into year three, Foster was looking to replace his starting running back and quarterback. Instead, in what looked to be a rebuilding season, Foster built on his previous success and took the Bulldogs to even great heights than ever before. They started the season with a record-breaking 70-0 win over Brewer and a 24-7 win over West Morgan. Then, after a loss on the road at Brooks, Priceville won seven in a row to close the season with a 9-1 record and a second-place finish in region play. The Bulldogs opened the playoffs with a 31-14 win over a talented Etowah team who finished in a three-way tie for first in their region. He was named to the 4A 1st team along with Cappi. In addition, linebacker Jake Langlois and offensive lineman Tristan Holmes were named honorable mention all-state. “The biggest difference in my first three years and previous Priceville teams was their physicality,” said Foster. “Players have worked hard and developed a mindset to pound their opponents, which has paid off.” His team averaged 29.7 points per game in his first season while giving up 27.3. However, his offense increased their average per game to 31.8 in 2020 and then 37.2 in 2021. Improvement was also seen on the defensive side as they allowed 24.7 in 2020 and 20.4 in 2021. The 2021 team produced the second-best offensive and defensive seasons in school history. Looking back to his time before coming to Priceville, Foster said that he was fortunate to see how coaching changes were successful and unsuccessful. That taught me what I needed to do when I got my first head coaching position. “Coaching at my alma mater Brookwood, we had to do things differently due to our talent level,” Foster said. “I have been able to take some of those concepts and use them here in building the program and foundation for years to come.” Look for Foster and his Bulldogs to continue their success this season as they move to a new region with new opponents.

The Falkville Blue Devils move into a new region in year two under head coach Seth Ward. They leave 2A Region 7 and join 2A Region 8. The Blue Devils enter the 2022 season after missing the playoffs last season for the first time since 2016. In addition, their season was plagued by injuries to multiple key starters. Falkville will take the field looking to learn from last season’s mistakes and make a return trip to the playoffs. The Blue Devils look to contend for a region championship with eight starters returning on offense and seven on defense. They have question marks at running back, wide receiver, and the kicking game. “The line will be the strongest unit on the offense,” Ward said. “They have the experience to lead in tough situations.” Freshmen Asa Key and Landon Wilhite will grow into the position and eventually provide additional depth.

DEFENSIVE LINE

LINEBACKERS

Jackson Edmonson is the leader at linebacker for the Blue Devils. Dave Lockhart and Malachi Collett, who led the team in tackles last season, also return as starters. In addition, Thomas Williams, Caden McDonald, Levi Lynn, and Avery Bramlett will be called to provide additional depth. “The strength of the defense is our linebackers,” Ward said. “We have eight or nine guys who can play the position.”

SECONDARY

Burnett will be the secondary leader as he enters his third year as a starter. Joining him will be Franklin and Powers at the corners. Tew is returning to the safety position. Also, Warnick and Bennett will see time in secondary.

SPECIAL TEAMS

Our placekicking position will be a work in progress as the Blue Devils are still searching for someone to take over following the graduation of Greenfield. Burnett will handle the punting duties.

BREAKOUT POTENTIAL

Trey Hemming, who saw some playing time as a freshman, has had a good offseason and has positioned himself to become a special player in the Blue Devils’ offensive line. BLACK BEARS

LAY OF THE LAND

After six straight seasons of making the playoffs, the Black Bears (4-6, 3-4) missed out in 2021 with a young squad that went through some growing pains during a 1-5 start. The good news is that last season’s youth movement means lots of experience returns this season. Austin’s defense has 10 players back who started at least one game last season. Several of those players are in new positions. Nine starters return on offense, including senior quarterback De’Air Young, three in the offensive line who started all 10 games and speedster Maurice Jones.

HEAD COACH

The previous two-year starters at quarterback were Paxton Montgomery (2016 and 2017) and Quincy Crittendon (2019 and 2020). “De’Air is a real leader for our team,” Perkins said. “He throws the ball really well and does a great job of running our offense. The most important thing is that he protects the football.” Last season Young threw for 1,165 yards and 12 touchdowns while rushing for 440 yards and a touchdown.

OFFENSE

If it’s what up front that counts, Austin has a lot to count on upfront in the offensive line with four seniors. They are Payson Hubbard (5-foot-11, 280 pounds)

Jeremy Perkins is starting his 13th season as head coach at Austin. He has the longest tenure of any Austin football head coach. He has the most career wins with an 83-53 record. The Black Bears are 5826 over the last seven seasons with three region championships.

LAST SEASON

Austin’s offense averaged just 21.9 points a game. The Black Bears were shut out in the season opener by Hartselle, 29-0, and the season finale by Mountain Brook, 340. The defense allowed 26.8 points a game with one shutout, 42-0, over Albertville.

LAST THREE SEASONS

The Black Bears are 19-13 over the last three seasons.

WORDS TO GROW ON

“We have a lot more experience returning on both sides of the ball and in the kicking game,” Perkins said. “Depth is a concern, Austin players take a break but we really have a stronger nucleus than we did a year ago.” at center, Quade McAfee (6-3, 300) and Jalen Verser-Jackson (6-0, 295) at the guards and Wyatt Albrecht (6-11, 270) at QUARTERBACK Young (5-foot-9, 165 pounds) returns tackle. RED RAIDERS

LAY OF THE LAND

The Red Raiders were looking for a turnaround season last year and they got it. After back-to-back seasons with 2-8 seasons, Decatur went 4-7. It was not your normal four-win season. Decatur opened with four straight losses. The Red Raiders then turned it around by winning four of their next five. The season ended in the first round of the Class 6A playoffs with a loss to eventual Class 6A state champion Clay-Chalkville.

HEAD COACH

Jere Adcock (178-117) is entering his 27th season leading the Red Raiders.

LAST SEASON

Decatur played in so many close games that the record could have easily been flipped to as many as seven wins. The Red Raiders lost to Austin, 17-13, to Muscle Shoals, 24-22, and Cullman, 17-14. The season produced some other interesting numbers. The offense averaged 23.4 points a game. The defense allowed an average of 23.7 points. Decatur’s opponents were a combined 69-51.

ing out 0-4 and coming back like we did to make the playoffs says a lot about the character of these players. They played hard and never quit.”

QUARTERBACK

Ellis Dickman (5-foot-11, 160 pounds, Sr.) is back at quarterback. His backup is Mac Hillis (6-4, 220, Sr.).

OFFENSE

The Red Raiders will line up in the spread formation like just about every team in the state. The big difference is that Decatur still wants to have a physical rushing attack. That hasn’t been easy over the last few seasons. There hasn’t been that physical back to set the tone. It may be different this year. Ryan Kirk (5-9, 195, Sr.) showed some flashes last season of being that kind of back.

LAST THREE SEASONS

Decatur is 8-23 over the last three seasons with one trip to the playoffs.

WORDS TO GROW ON

“We have a lot of kids back who played a lot last season,” Adcock said. “After start-

It’s a new day for Decatur Heritage football. Steve Meek has retired after 11 seasons, 86 wins and four region championships. Nikita Stover is the new man in charge. the right way to play will be important.” After coaching in youth football for several years, Stover coached the Decatur Heritage Middle School team last season to a 6-1 record. The only loss was in the season finale to Mars Hill Bible.

LAST SEASON

Decatur Heritage went 10-3 with a region championship and two wins in the state playoffs. The Eagles had five senior All-State selections in Kyle, receiver Alex Malone, linebacker Nash Rippen, offensive lineman Saxon Sample and defensive back Tyler Founds. Kyle has moved on to play at UNA. Founds is playing at Troy.

Stover, 37, has a strong coaching pedigree having played at Hartselle for head coaches Michael Smith and Bob Godsey and later at Alabama for Mike Shula and Nick Saban. “I learned from Coach Saban how imporLAST THREE SEASONS tant it is to teach our players the right way Decatur Heritage is 31-7 over the last to play the game,” Stover said. “We are go- three seasons with three region championing to be young this season and teaching ships and five playoff victories.
