PRESIDENT’S LETTER

Dear Fellow Members,

Spring in New England has arrived, and the weather continues to be a consistent mystery. Here at the HCB, the weather is forecast to be sunny with comfortable temperatures. We’ve had a great series of member events in April, and May promises to be even more engaging and fun. The Annual Spring Gathering combined with our Annual Meeting was a night of enjoyment and fellowship. Members enjoyed connecting with each other, and there were many new introductions of members who met for the first time. The intergenerational and multi-discipline dynamic was on full display on April 24th. Many thanks to HAA President Allyson Mendenhall ’90, M.L.A. ’99 and HAA Executive Director Sarah Karmon for their conversation about the University, the HAA and the importance of engaging alumni through the HCB and other Harvard alumni clubs. Congratulations to Sarah and Debbie Millin, gb’22 amp on being elected to our Board of Governors. They are wonderful additions to our club leadership team, and we look forward to their contributions through their time and talents. The evening would not have been a success without the leadership of our General Manager, Steve Cummings, along with the event planning and execution of our Member Experience team, led by Becky Blaeser ’98 and our entire culinary and hospitality team. Last but not least, kudos to BOG members Andy Freed ’90, ks’94, Susan Kendall ’81, ks’99 and Marty Grasso ’78 for their creativity which established the inspiration for the evening’s events. Great job by all involved.

Last week, I had a conversation with one of our new members – less than a year. It was one of the most

enlightening discussions I’ve had during my first year as president. The person is a faithful Muslim and informed me that Ramadan was ending with a celebration called Eid al-Fitr. “Eid” is a one to three day celebration that marks the end of the prolonged fast of Ramadan. The person mentioned that there are a number of Muslims at our club and asked if it would be possible to acknowledge the holiday in some way at the HCB in the future. A simple mention would be appreciated in the same way we do so for Easter and Passover. I found this request refreshing, and I was grateful that we have created an atmosphere that a member of our community felt comfortable to mention this issue so that we give a sense of belonging to our Muslim members. Recognition is a key component of belonging, and we will incorporate opportunities for that recognition as we become aware of them. We are strengthened by the richness shared individually and collectively through acknowledgement, inclusion and equity.

May is Asian American Pacific Islander Heritage Month. This annual month-long event is an opportunity to celebrate the many contributions and achievements of the Asian American and Pacific Islander (AAPI) community. One of the most meaningful events on the calendar this month is Commencement at Harvard University. It

is a time to welcome new alumni to our club community. The Class of 2023 - both College and Graduate Schools - receive a one year complementary membership to the HCB. Those who were interested submitted applications immediately. To date, we have a record number of these new members. You will see their faces this month especially during the week of Commencement and the following Alumni Week as they begin to experience our club. Let’s embrace these new members, a year from now they make the decision to remain with us or not. We should all commit ourselves to making the choice easy for them to remain with us. Let’s do our best to welcome them and give them a sense that they belong in our HCB community. Please be sure to check our app or website for a full listing of upcoming events.

Elections for Harvard University Overseers and HAA Elected Directors end on May 16. I am pleased to note that the following HCB members are candidates for Overseer: Jeffrey D. Dunn A.B. ’77, M.B.A. ’81, Arturo Elizondo A.B. ’14 and Vanessa W. Liu A.B. ’96, J.D. ’03. The following member is running for elected director: Anirudh Suri M.P.A. ’14, B.A. ’06, Haverford College; M.B.A. ’12, University of Pennsylvania. Dear Harvard Club of Boston Membership:

As we spring into May, it is time to celebrate another graduating class across the river at Harvard and welcome the next generation of Harvard Club members into our community. Our staff is here to create a welcoming environment for everyone and deliver memorable experiences for all when they enter the clubhouse or engage with the club digitally. If you have not done so yet, we encourage you to download the HCB app and login so you easily maximize your membership by registering for events, request a letter of introduction to visit one of our global reciprocal clubs or make a dining reservation at Veritas.

For members who visit the Club and take advantage of the convenience of our parking lot in the rear of the building, effective May 1st, HCB will go cashless. Members can continue to apply parking charges to their HCB Member Accounts. All guests and visitors will be able to pay via credit card only. Cash will no longer be accepted. We appreciate your support of this new initiative and look forward to welcoming you at our Newbury Street entrance.

Over the past few years, we introduced outdoor dining here at the club once the pandemic began. The permitting required for this was allowed by the City of Boston to accommodate local businesses to operate without disruption and make residents feel safe. This summer a new permanent permit approval process has been introduced by the City for this service and we filed for the necessary permit in early February 2023. To date, we have not received an update as to when it will be issued. We are working diligently alongside lawyers, architects and the City to expedite the process and deliver this wonderful dining experience to our members. As soon as we have more information we will communicate it to all of you.

On May 3rd, Joel Richard Paul will be making a special trip to HCB from the West Coast to dazzle us with his compelling history and account of one of the founders of our national perspective. He will talk to us about Webster - the greatest orator of his age – who saw his speeches and writings published widely, and his stirring rhetoric convinced Americans to see themselves differently, as a nation bound together by a government of laws, not parochial interests. As these ideas took root, they influenced future leaders, among them Abraham Lincoln, who drew on them to hold the nation together during the Civil War.

Now the Book Club will gather for a spirited discussion about The Grand Affair. Fisher presents a bold new biography of the legendary painter John Singer Sargent, stressing the unruly emotions and furtive desires that drove his innovative work and defined the transatlantic, fin de siècle culture he inhabited.

We are honored to welcome Captain Paul E. Mawn US Navy (retired) as our featured speaker for our Military Appreciation Lecture series. Captain Mawn’s presentation of “Oil & War” will focus on the varied impact of oil on the military activities of Germany, Japan and the USA during World War II. The critical lessons learned regarding petroleum and military strategy have particular relevance today.

Captain Paul E. Mawn US Navy (Ret.) grew up in Lynn, MA and was commissioned as a Navy ensign via NROTC after graduating cum laude in Geology from Harvard College. For many years and currently, he also serves as the Chairman of the Advocates for Harvard ROTC.

A CONVERSATION DINNER WITH IAN WOLFE

Join HCB member Ian Wolfe MIT ’10, ALM ‘20 for a discussion about national security issues on a granular level. Mr. Wolfe currently works as a strategist for the MITRE Corporation across a wide federal portfolio including continued work in national security. From 2012 until 2020, Ian served in the US Army as a member of a Special Forces “A-Team.” After enlisting in 2012, he was an honor graduate of his Infantry class, completed Airborne School, and was selected for Special Forces training. As a communications specialist Ian deployed with his team to Syria, where he leveraged a conversational proficiency in Arabic to work with local militias to combat the Islamic State. He finished his service as a Green Beret as a special warfare planner, providing surge planning capability to crisis situations across the Middle East.

TOUR OF THE HISTORIC OTIS HOUSE

The ladies of the Crimson Hat are planning a special excursion to the Historic Otis House in May. It will be a wonderful opportunity to explore what is the last surviving mansion in Bowdoin Square in Boston’s West End neighborhood. Charles Bulfinch designed the house for Harrison Gray Otis, a lawyer who was instrumental in developing nearby Beacon Hill, served in Congress, and was a mayor of Boston. The tour will allow us to learn about the family’s life in the Federal era and the later history of the house, when it served as a clinic and a middle-class boarding house.

BABY & ME YOGA

ATHLETIC DEPARTMENT STUDIO

Focus on you and your little Yogi. Baby and Me Yoga will restore balance and health to the physical body for postnatal women helping them resume physical activity in a fun and flexible environment.

You will practice gentle yoga poses, relaxation and breathing techniques throughout this 1-hour class. During the session you will learn infant massage techniques and stretches for your baby while bonding, stretching and strengthening your body.

It will be held on the Lower Level of the Clubhouse in the yoga room next to the squash court.

Registration is required for this complimentary class.

Sign up by Friday of that week and a match will be set up for you. Stay after play and grab a drink or something to eat.

HAA NOMINATES 4 HCB MEMBERS FOR BOARD OF OVERSEERS & ELECTED DIRECTORS

Time is running out to place your vote for the Harvard Alumni Association Board of Overseers — the University’s second-highest governing body — and for elected directors of the HAA. The final day to cast your ballot of May 16.

The nominating committee, composed of alumni volunteers, selected eight candidates for five expected vacancies on the Board of Overseers and nine candidates for six vacancies for the HAA elected directors.

Among the Board of Overseers on the ballot are three HCB members: Boston Symphony Orchestra CEO Jeffrey D. Dunn ’77, former HAA President Vanessa W. Liu ’96, and The EVERY Company CEO Arturo Elizondo A.B. ’14. Along with nine other Harvard alums on the ballot for HAA Elected Directors is HCB member Anirudh Suri, mpa ’14, founding partner of the venture capital firm India Internet Fund.

The Board of Overseers was established in 1642. Its work includes directing the “periodic external assessment” of Harvard’s various schools and departments and advising University administration on initiatives. The HAA elected directors strive to bolster alumni engagement around the world. Prior initiatives have included outreach to recent graduates and building inclusive alumni networks.

To cancel an event reservation, log on to harvardclub.com and select the event you want to cancel from your dashboard. Click the button at the bottom that says “CANCEL RESERVATION.” If you need assistance, call 617-450-8493. Unless a cancellation date is specified, cancellations made five days prior to the event will not be charged. Any cancellations after that deadline will be charged in full.

ATHLETIC WAIVER

All athletics members must submit a signed liability waiver in order to use the Club’s athletic facilities. Waivers are available in the Fitness Center or by contacting our Athletic Department Manager, Valerie Phillips, at 617-450-8485.
